완전한 선물

미국에서 성탄절 이후 몇 주간은 마음에 들지 않는 선물을 본인들이 원하는 것으로 바꾸기 위해 상품을 반환하느라 일 년 중 가장 바쁜 시기입니다. 그럼에도 아마 당신 주위에는 언제나 완벽한 선물을 주는 것 같은 사람이 몇 명 있을 것입니다. 다른 사람들이 좋아하고 상황에 꼭 맞는 선물이 무엇인지 어떻게 알 수 있을까요? 선물을 성공적으로 주기 위한 중요한 비결은 돈이 아닙니다. 다른 사람들이 이야기하는 것을 듣고 그들이 즐기고 감사하는 것이 무엇인가에 대해 개인적으로 관심을 갖는 것입니다.

이것은 가족과 친구들에게도 마찬 가지입니다. 하지만 하나님에 관하여는 어떻습니까? 우리가 하나님께 드릴 수 있는 의미 있고 귀중한 것에는 무엇이 있을까요? 하나님이 이미 갖지 못하신 것이 있을까요?

로마서 11:33-36은 측량 못할 하나님의 지혜와 지식과 영광을 찬양합니다. 그러고는 하나님께 우리를 드리라는 요구가 바로 이어 나옵니다. “그러므로 형제들아 내가 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 너희를 권하노니 너희 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드리라 이는 너희가 드릴 영적 예배니라”(12:1). 우리는 주위의 세상풍습대로 사는 것이 아니라 “[우리의] 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아야”(2절) 합니다.

오늘 우리가 하나님께 드릴 수 있는 가장 좋은 선물이 무엇일까요? 우리는 감사와 겸손과 사랑으로 우리의 마음과 성품과 의지를 포함하는 우리 자신을 온전히 하나님께 드릴 수 있습니다. 그것이 바로 주님께서 우리 각자로부터 받기 원하시는 것입니다.

The Perfect Gift

The weeks after Christmas are the busiest time of year in the US for merchandise returns as people trade unwanted gifts for what they really want. Yet you probably know a few people who always seem to give the perfect gift. How do they know just what another person values and what is right for the occasion? The key to successful gift-giving is not money; it’s listening to others and taking a personal interest in what they enjoy and appreciate.

This is true for family and friends. But what about God? Is there anything meaningful or valuable that we can give to God? Is there anything He doesn’t already have?

Romans 11:33–36, a song of praise to God for His great wisdom, knowledge, and glory, is followed by a call to give ourselves to Him. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” (12:1). Instead of being shaped by the world around us, we are to be “transformed by the renewing of [our] mind” (V. 2).

What’s the best gift we can give to God today? In gratitude, humility, and love we can give ourselves completely to Him—heart, mind, and will. It’s just what the Lord is longing to receive from each of us. - DAVID MCCASLAND

감사하는 삶

성숙한 영적인 삶과 더욱더 감사하는 삶을 살기 원하여 수는 ‘감사하는 삶의 항아리’라는 것을 시작하였습니다. 그녀는 매일 저녁마다 하나님께 감사제목 하나를 조그만 쪽지에 적어서 항아리에 집어넣었습니다. 어느 날에는 많은 찬양과 감사가 있었고 힘들었던 날에는 감사제목을 찾기가 어려웠습니다. 연말에 항아리를 비우며 모든 쪽지를 읽으면서 그녀는 하나님이 그녀에게 베풀어주신 모든 것에 대해 다시 한 번 감사하였습니다. 하나님은 아름다운 저녁노을이나 공원에서 산책하기 좋은 서늘한 저녁을 주시기도 했고, 어려운 상황을 잘 극복하도록 은혜를 베푸시거나 기도에 응답해주시기도 했습니다.

수의 발견은 시편기자 다윗이 자신의 경험을 이야기하는 것을 상기시켜 줍니다(시편 23). 하나님은 “푸른 초장”과 “잔잔한 물가”에서 (2-3절) 그의 기운을 새롭게 해주셨으며, 그를 인도하시고 보호하시고 위로해주셨습니다(3-4절). 다윗은 “내 평생에 선하심과 인자하심이 반드시 나를 따르리니”(6절)라고 결론을 지었습니다.

나도 새해에는 ‘감사하는 삶의 항아리’를 준비하려고 합니다. 아마 당신도 그렇게 하고 싶을 것입니다. 우리는 하나님께서 선물로 주신 친구들과 가족, 그리고 우리의 육신적 영적 정서적 필요를 위해 하나님이 공급해주신 것 등, 하나님께 감사해야 할 많은 이유가 있음을 알게 될 것입니다. 우리는 하나님의 선하심과 인자하심이 평생 우리를 따른다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다.

Thanks Living

Wanting to mature in her spiritual life and become more thankful, Sue started what she called a Thanks Living jar. Each evening she wrote on a small piece of paper one thing she thanked God for and dropped it in the jar. Some days she had many praises; other difficult days she struggled to find one. At the end of the year she emptied her jar and read through all of the notes. She found herself thanking God again for everything He had done. He had given simple things like a beautiful sunset or a cool evening for a walk in the park, and other times He had provided grace to handle a difficult situation or had answered a prayer.

Sue’s discovery reminded me of what the psalmist David says he experienced (PS. 23). God refreshed him with “green pastures” and “quiet waters” (VV. 2–3). He gave him guidance, protection, and comfort (VV. 3–4). David concluded: “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life” (V. 6).

I’m going to make a Thanks-Living jar this year. Maybe you’d like to as well. I think we’ll see we have many reasons to thank God—including His gifts of friends and family and His provisions for our physical, spiritual, and emotional needs. We’ll see that the goodness and love of God follows us all the days of our lives. - ANNE CETAS

지금이 바로 그날

유아원 또래의 손녀 매기와 유치원 나이인 그의 언니 케이티가 여러 장의 담요를 끌고 뒤뜰로 나가 담요로 텐트를 만들어서 그 안에서 놀고 있었습니다. 아이들이 밖에 한참 동안 있었는데 매기가 엄마를 부르는 소리가 들렸습니다.

“엄마, 빨리 이리 좀 오세요!”라고 매기가 소리쳤습니다. “나는 지금 예수님을 내 마음에 모시려고 해요. 엄마가 와서 좀 도와주세요!” 아마도 그 순간 매기는 예수님이 필요하다는 것을 분명히 느끼고 예수님을 믿기로 작정했던 것 같습니다. 예수님을 영접하기 위한 매기의 급한 도움의 요청은 구원에 관한 고린도후서 6장의 바울의 말씀을 상기시켜줍니다. 거기에서 그는 예수님이 오셔서 죽으시고 부활하심으로 그가 “은혜 받을 만한 때” 라고 부르는 어떤 때를 만드셨다는 사실을 이야기하고 있습니다. 우리는 바로 그때에 살고 있고 구원은 바로 지금 모든 사람에게 주어질 수 있습니다. 그는 “보라 지금은 은혜 받을 만한 때요 보라 지금은 구원의 날이로다”(2절)라고 말했습니다. 아직도 예수님을 믿어 죄 용서함을 받지 못한 모든 이들에게는 지금이 바로 예수님을 영접할 때입니다. 이것은 아주 시급한 일입니다.

아마도 성령님께서 당신이 예수님을 믿는 것이 필요하다는 생각을 이미 주셨는지도 모르겠습니다. 매기가 그렇게 했듯이, 지체하지 마시고 예수님께로 달려가십시오. 지금이 바로 그날입니다!

하나님의 가족이 되기 위해 오늘보다 더 좋은 날은 없다.

Now Is the Day

Our preschool-age granddaughter Maggie and her kindergarten-age sister Katie hauled several blankets to the backyard, where they proceeded to build a blanket tent in which to play. They had been outside a while when their mom heard Maggie call for her.

“Mom, come here quick!” Maggie yelled. “I want to ask Jesus into my heart, and I need your help!” Apparently at that moment her need for Jesus became clear to her, and she was ready to put her faith in Him.

Maggie’s urgent call for help in trusting Jesus brings to mind Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 6 about salvation. He was discussing the reality that Jesus Christ’s coming—including His death and resurrection—instituted an era he called “the time of God’s favor.” We live in that time, and salvation is available to all right now. He said, “I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation” (v. 2). For all who have not yet trusted Jesus for forgiveness, the time to do so is now. It is urgent.

Perhaps the Holy Spirit has alerted you to your need to put your trust in Jesus. Like Maggie, don’t put it off. Run to Jesus. Now is the day! - DAVE BRANON

하나님과 단 둘이 있는 시간

어느 아침, 내가 도우미로 있는 교회 교실 안이 북적대고 있었습니다. 십여 명의 어린아이들이 떠들며 놀면서 너무 부산을 떨어, 방이 후덥지근해져서 나는 문을 조금 열어놓았습니다. 그랬더니 그것을 본 한 꼬마 녀석이 아무도 보지 않는 줄 알고 살그머니 문밖으로 빠져나갔습니다. 그를 거의 쫓아갔는데, 당연하게도 아이는 곧바로 아빠의 품으로 달려가 뛰어드는 것이었습니다.

아버지와 함께 있기 위해 살짝 빠져나간 그 아이의 행동은 우리의 삶이 바쁘거나 억눌릴 때 우리가 취해야 할 행동입니다. 예수님은 기회를 찾아 기도하며 하늘에 계신 아버지와 함께 시간을 보내셨습니다. 어떤 사람들은 그것이 바로 예수님이 그의 인간적인 에너지를 고갈시키는 많은 일들을 극복하는 방법이었다고 말합니다. 마태복음에 의하면, 예수님은 군중들이 그를 따라올 때 한적한 곳으로 가셨습니다. 그들의 필요를 보시고 기적으로 그들을 고치시며 먹이셨던 예수님은 그런 후에 기도하시기 위해 따로 산으로 올라가셨습니다(23절).

예수님은 계속해서 많은 사람들을 도우셨지만, 자신이 초췌해지거나 서두르지 않으셨습니다. 주님은 기도로 하나님과 자신의 관계를
잘 유지하셨습니다. 당신의 경우는 어떻습니까? 하나님의 능력과 풍성함을 경험할 수 있도록 하나님과 단둘이 있는 시간을 만들어보시지 않겠습니까?

Time Alone With God

It was a busy morning in the church room where I was helping. Nearly a dozen little children were chattering and playing. There was so much activity that the room became warm and I propped the door open. One little boy saw this as his chance to escape so when he thought no one was looking, he tiptoed out the door. Hot on his trail, I wasn’t surprised that he was headed straight for his daddy’s arms.

The little boy did what we need to do when life becomes busy and overwhelming—he slipped away to be with his father. Jesus looked for opportunities to spend time with His heavenly Father in prayer. Some might say this was how He coped with the demands that depleted His human energy. According to the gospel of Matthew, Jesus was headed to a solitary place when a crowd of people followed Him. Noticing their needs, Jesus miraculously healed and fed them. After that, however, He “went up on a mountainside by himself to pray” (v. 23).

Jesus repeatedly helped multitudes of people, yet He didn’t allow Himself to become haggard and hurried. He nurtured His connection with God through prayer. How is it with you? Will you take time alone with God to experience His strength and fulfillment? - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

인장 반지

외국에서 온 한 친구를 처음 만났을 때, 그의 고급스러운 영어 발음과 그의 새끼손가락에 끼어 있는 반지가 특별히 눈에 띄었습니다. 나중에 나는 그 반지가 단순한 장신구가 아니라, 거기에 새겨져 있는 가문의 문장을 통해 그의 가문의 역사를 나타내고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

그것은 마치 학개서에 나오는 인장 반지와 같은 것이었습니다. 이 짧은 구약의 책 안에서 학개 선지자는 하나님의 백성들에게 성전 재건을 다시 시작할 것을 촉구합니다. 그들은 추방당했다가 다시 고국 땅으로 돌아와 성전을 재건하고 있었는데, 적들의 방해로 그 일이 중단되었던 것입니다. 학개의 메시지에는 인장 반지와 같이 지도자로 선택받고 구별된 유다의 지도자, 스룹바벨에게 주시는 하나님의 약속도 포함되어 있습니다.

표지를 남겼습니다. 하나님의 자녀로서 우리가 복음을 전하고, 이웃 사랑으로 하나님의 은혜를 나누며, 압제를 끝내기 위해 일을 할 때, 우리도 이 세상에 표지를 남깁니다.

우리 각자에게는 우리가 어떻게 하나님의 형상으로 지어졌는지를 보여주고, 특별한 은사와 열정과 지혜로 어우러진 우리의 모습을 나타내 보여주는 우리 고유의 도장이 있습니다. 하나님의 세상에서 우리가 인장 반지 같은 역할을 감당하는 것은 우리의 소명이자 특권입니다.

Signet Ring

When I first made the acquaintance of a new friend from abroad, I noticed his posh English accent and that he wore a ring on his little finger. Later I learned that this wasn’t just jewelry; it revealed his family’s history through the family crest engraved on it.

It was a bit like a signet ring—perhaps like the one in Haggai. In this short Old Testament book, the prophet Haggai calls for the people of God to restart the rebuilding of the temple. They had been exiled and had now returned to their homeland and begun rebuilding, but enemy opposition to their project had stalled them. Haggai’s message includes God’s promise to Zerubbabel, Judah’s leader, that he had been chosen and set apart as their leader, like a signet ring.

In ancient times, a signet ring was used as a means of identification. Instead of signing their name, people would press their ring into hot wax or soft clay to make their mark. As God’s children, we too make a mark on the world as we spread the gospel, share His grace through loving our neighbors, and work to end oppression.

Each of us has our own unique stamp that reveals how we’re created in God’s image and expresses our particular mix of gifts, passions, and wisdom. It’s our call and privilege to act as this signet ring in God’s world. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

사랑에 묶인 자

2015년 6월, 파리시는 퐁데자르 다리의 난간에서 45톤 무게의 자물쇠들을 철거했습니다. 연인들이 사랑의 징표로 자신들의 이름 첫 글자를 자물쇠에 새기고 다리의 난간에 달아 잠근 후에 그 열쇠를 센 강에 던지곤 했었습니다.

이런 의식이 수 없이 반복되어, 다리는 그렇게 많은 “사랑”의 무게를 더 이상 감당할 수 없게 되었습니다. 결국 파리시는 그 다리의 안전을 염려하여 그 “사랑의 자물쇠들”을 철거했습니다.

그 자물쇠들은 영원한 사랑을 상징하는 것이었지만 사람들의 사랑은 언제나 영원하지는 않습니다. 가장 가까운 친구들도 서로를 공격하고 그 틀어진 관계를 다시는 회복하지 못하기도 합니다. 가족 간에도 서로 다투고 용서하기를 거부하기도 하고, 부부도
그들이 왜 결혼하기로 했는지 기억하지도 못할 만큼 서로 아주 멀어지기도 합니다. 이처럼 변덕스러울 수 있는 것이 인간의 사랑입니다.

그러나 한 가지 꾸준하고 변치 않는 사랑이 있습니다. 그것은 하나님의 사랑입니다. 시편 106편 1절은 “여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다”라고 선포합니다. 한결같고 영원한 하나님의 사랑의 약속은 성경 곳곳에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 그리고 이 사랑의 가장 강력한 증거는 그분의 아들 예수님의 죽음입니다. 하나님은 그 예수님을 믿는 자들에게 영생을 주십니다. 그리고 그 어느 것도 우리를 하나님의 사랑에서 떼어놓을 수 없습니다(로마서 8:38-39).

믿음을 가진 여러분, 우리는 하나님의 사랑에 영원히 묶여 있습니다.

Locked Into Love

In June 2015, the city of Paris removed forty-five tons of padlocks from the railings of the Pont des Arts pedestrian bridge. As a romantic gesture, couples would etch their initials onto a lock, attach it to the railing, click it shut, and throw the key into the River Seine.

After this ritual was repeated thousands of times, the bridge could no longer bear the weight of so much “love.” Eventually the city, fearing for the integrity of the bridge, removed the “love locks.”

The locks were meant to symbolize everlasting love, but human love does not always last. The closest of friends may offend each other and never resolve their differences. Family members may argue and refuse to forgive. A husband and wife may drift so far apart that they can’t remember why they once decided to marry. Human love can be fickle.

But there is one constant and enduring love—the love of God. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever,” proclaims Psalm 106:1. The promises of the unfailing and everlasting nature of God’s love are found throughout Scripture. And the greatest proof of this love is the death of His Son so that those who put their faith in Him can live eternally. And nothing will ever separate us from His love (Rom. 8:38–39).

단순한 말의 힘

아버지의 병실에서 터져 나오는 요란한 웃음소리가 병문안 온 손님들이 누군지 말해주었습니다. 나이 든 트럭운전사 둘, 왕년의 컨트리가수, 공예가, 이웃 농장의 여자 둘, 그리고 내가 있었습니다.

“......그러니까 그 녀석이 일어나더니 병으로 내 머리를 쳤다고.” 공예가가 그렇게 말하며 술집에서 있었던 싸움 이야기를 끝냈습니다.

이제는 재미있는 추억이 된 그 이야기로 병실은 웃음바다가 되었습니다. 암 투병으로 웃을 때마다 숨쉬기 힘들어하던 아버지는 사람들에게 “내 아들이 목사이니” 말을 함부로 하지 말라고 과장하여 주의를 주었습니다. 이 말에 한 2초간 조용하더니 곧 병실은 더욱 큰 웃음바다가 되었습니다.

병문안이 40분쯤 지났을 때, 공예가가 갑자기 목소리를 가다듬으며 아버지를 향하여 진지한 표정을 지었습니다. “하워드, 난 이제 술도 끊었고 술집에서 싸움도 안 한다네. 그런 건 다 지나간 일들이야. 나에겐 이제 살아야 할 다른 이유가 있다네. 자네에게 내 구주에 관해 이야기하고 싶네.”

의외로 아버지의 큰 저항 없이 그는 바로 본론으로 들어갔습니다. 나는 이보다 더 부드럽고 멋지게 복음을 전하는 방법을 아직 들어보지 못했습니다. 아버지는 귀 기울여 들으며 바라보았습니다. 그리고 몇 년 후 아버지도 예수님을 믿게 되었습니다.

그것은 단순한 삶을 살아온 한 오랜 친구의 단순한 간증이었습니다. 그 일을 통해 나는 단순함이 순진하거나 어리석은 것이 아니라, 더 직접적이며 겸손한 것임을 새삼 깨달았습니다.

예수님이 그와 같고, 구원이 바로 그와 같습니다.

The Power of Simple Words

Raucous laughter marked the guests in my father's hospital room: Two old truck drivers, one former country/western singer, one craftsman, two women from neighboring farms, and me. 

"...and then he got up and busted the bottle over my head," the craftsman said, finishing his story about a bar fight.

The room bursts into laughter at this now-humorous memory. Dad, struggling for breath as his laughing fought with his cancer for the air in his lungs, puffs out a reminder to everybody that “Randy is a preacher" so they need to watch what they say. Everything got quiet for about two seconds, then the whole room exploded as this news makes them laugh harder and louder. 

Suddenly, about forty minutes into this visit, the craftsman clears his throat, turns to my dad, and gets serious. "No more drinking and bar fights for me, Howard. Those days are behind me. Now I have a different reason to live. I want to tell you about my Savior."

He then proceeded to do just that, over my father's surprisingly mild protests.  If there's a sweeter, gentler way to present the gospel message, I've never heard it. 
My dad listened and watched, and some years later believed in Jesus too.

It was a simple testimony from an old friend living a simple life, reminding me again that simple isn't naïve or stupid; it's direct and unpretentious.

제시간에

나는 가끔 ‘제시간에’라는 제목의 책을 낼 거라고 농담을 합니다. 그러면 나를 아는 사람들은 내가 자주 모임에 늦는 걸 알기 때문에 미소를 짓습니다. 나는 늦을 때마다 노력이 부족해서라기보다는 내 낙천적인 성격이 원인이라고 합리화합니다. 나는 낙관하여 “이번에는” 예전과 달리 더 많은 일을 더 짧은 시간에 끝낼 수 있을 거라는 잘못된 믿음을 버리질 못합니다. 하지만, 사실 그렇게 하지도 못할 뿐 아니라, 하려고 하지도 않습니다. 그래서 결국은 또 다시 제 시간에 나타나지 못한 것을 사과해야만 합니다.

이와 반대로, 하나님은 언제나 제 시간에 일하십니다. 우리는 하나님께서 늦는다고 생각할지 모르지만 그렇지 않습니다. 우리는
성경 곳곳에서 하나님의 때를 기다리지 못하고 조급해하는 사람들을 봅니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 약속된 메시아를 기다리고 또 기다렸습니다. 어떤 사람들은 그 희망을 포기해버렸습니다. 하지만 시므온과 안나는 포기하지 않고 매일 성전에서 기도하며 기다렸습니다(누가복음 2:25- 26,37). 그리고 그들의 믿음은 보상을 받았습니다. 그들은 마리아와 요셉이 봉헌하기 위해 데려온 아기 예수를 보게 되었던 것입니다 (27-32,38절).

하나님이 우리의 시간표대로 응답하시지 않아 낙심될 때에 성탄절은 우리에게 다음과 같이 일러줍니다. “때가 차매 하나님이 그 아들을 보내사......우리로 아들의 명분을 얻게 하려 하심이라” (갈라디아서 4:4-5). 하나님의 시간은 언제나 완벽하기에 기다릴 만한 가치가 있습니다.

On Time

Sometimes I joke that I'm going to write a book titled On Time. Those who know me smile because they know I am often late. I rationalize that my lateness is due to optimism, not to lack of trying. I optimistically cling to the faulty belief that “this time” I will be able to get more done in less time than ever before. But I can't, and I don't, so I end up having to apologize yet again for my failure to show up on time.

In contrast, God is always on time. We may think He's late, but He's not. Throughout Scripture we read about people becoming impatient with God’s timing. The Israelites waited and waited for the promised Messiah. Some gave up hope. But Simeon and Anna did not. They were in the temple daily praying and waiting (Luke 2:25–26, 37). And their faith was rewarded. They got to see the infant Jesus when Mary and Joseph brought Him to be dedicated (vv. 27–32, 38).

When we become discouraged because God doesn't respond according to our timetable, Christmas reminds us that “when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son . . . that we might receive adoption to sonship” (Gal. 4:4–5). 모두를 위한 기쁨

싱가포르에서 열린 기독서적출판 컨퍼런스의 마지막 날에, 50 개국에서 온 280명의 참가자가 단체사진을 찍기 위해 호텔 야외광장에 모였습니다. 사진사는 이층 발코니에서 여러 각도로 사진을 많이 찍고 나서 마침내 “다 끝났습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그때, 모인 사람 중 한 사람이 안도의 목소리로 “기쁘다!” 라고 소리쳤습니다. 즉시 누군가가 “구주 오셨네”라고 노래하며 화답했습니다. 그러자
다른 사람들도 같이 노래를 따라 부르기 시작했습니다. 곧 모든 사람이 멋진 하모니를 이루어 그 친숙한 캐럴을 불렀습니다. 정말로 잊지 못할 감동적인 화합과 기쁨의 장면이었습니다.

누가가 전하는 성탄절 이야기에서, 천사는 예수님의 탄생을 목자들에게 선 포 하 며 이 렇 게 이 야 기 했 습 니 다 . “무서워하지 말라 보라 내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 너희에게 전하노라 오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라”(누가복음 2:10-11).

그 기쁨의 소식은 소수의 몇 사람만을 위한 것이 아니라 모든 사람들을 위한 것이었습니다. “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니”(요한복음 3:16).

삶을 변화시키는 예수님의 메시지를 다른 사람들에게 전할 때, 우리는 “하나님의 영광의 의와 놀라운 사랑”을 선포하는 전 세계의
합창대와 함께 하는 것입니다. “기쁘다 구주 오셨네!”

Joy for All

On the final day of a Christian publishing conference in Singapore, 280 participants from 50 countries gathered in the outdoor plaza of a hotel for a group photo. From the second-floor balcony, the photographer took many shots from different angles before finally saying, “We’re through.” A voice from the crowd shouted with relief, “Well, joy to the world!” Immediately, someone replied by singing, “The Lord is come.” Others began to join in. Soon the entire group was singing the familiar carol in beautiful harmony. It was a moving display of unity and joy that I will never forget.

In Luke’s account of the Christmas story, an angel announced the birth of Jesus to a group of shepherds saying, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord” (Luke 2:10–11).

The joy was not for a few people, but for all. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son” (John 3:16).

As we share the life-changing message of Jesus with others, we join the worldwide chorus in proclaiming “the glories of His righteousness and wonders of His love.”

수용소의 성탄절

독일의 유명한 마틴 니몰러 목사는 히틀러를 공개적으로 반대했다는 이유로 거의 8년을 나치 강제수용소에서 지냈습니다. 1944년 성탄 전야에, 니몰러 목사는 다카우에 있는 동료 수감자들에게 이런 희망의 메시지를 들려주었습니다. “사랑하는 친구들이여, 이번 성탄절에는...... 베들레헴의 아기를 통해서, 우리를 무겁게 짓누르는 모든 짐을 우리와 함께 지려고 오 신 주 님 을 바 라 봅 시 다 . 하나님과 우리를 연결하는 다리를 하나님께서 직접 놓아주셨습니다! 높은 곳에서부터 새벽빛이 우리를 찾아왔습니다!”

성탄절에 우리는 하나님이 그리스도를 통해 우리가 어디에 있든 찾아오셔서 우리들 사이에 갈라져 있는 틈에 다리를 놓아주셨다는 복음을 맞이합니다. 하나님은 어둠에 갇힌 우리에게 빛으로 오셔서, 우리를 짓누르는 슬픔, 죄의식, 외로움의 짐을 가볍게 해주십니다.

감옥에 갇혀 암울했던 그 성탄 전야에 니몰러 목사는 이런 기쁜 소식을 함께 나누었습니다. “목자들을 두르고 있던 광채로부터 한 줄기 밝은 빛이 나와 우리의 어둠을 비춰줄 것입니다.” 그의 말은 이사야 선지자가 했던 말을 생각나게 해줍니다. “흑암에 행하던 백성이 큰 빛을 보고 사망의 그늘진 땅에 거주하던 자에게 빛이 비치도다”(이사야 9:2).

오늘 우리가 어디에 있든지, 예수님은 우리의 어둠의 세계를 뚫고 들어와 주님의 기쁨과 즐거움을 전해주십니다!

Christmas in Captivity

Rev. Martin Niemoller, a prominent German pastor, spent nearly eight years in Nazi concentration camps because he openly opposed Hitler. On Christmas Eve 1944, Niemoller spoke these words of hope to his fellow prisoners in Dachau:  “My dear friends, on this Christmas . . . let us seek, in the Babe of Bethlehem, the One who came to us in order to bear with us everything that weighs heavily upon us. . . . God Himself has built a bridge from Himself to us! A dawn from on high has visited us!”

At Christmas we embrace the good news that God, in Christ, has come to us wherever we are and has bridged the gap between us. He invades our prison of darkness with His light and lifts the load of sorrow, guilt, or loneliness that weighs us down. 

On that bleak Christmas Eve in prison, Niemoller shared this good news:  “Out of the brilliance that surrounded the shepherds a shining ray will fall into our darkness.” His words remind us of the prophet Isaiah, who prophetically said, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned” (Isa. 9:2).
