무엇이 영원한가?

최근에 많은 어려움을 겪었던 한 친구는 “지난 네 학기의 학교생활을 되돌아보니 참 많은 것들이 변했다...... 무섭다. 정말 무섭다. 영원한 것은 아무것도 없다.”라고 썼습니다.

실제로 2년이란 기간 동안 진로변경, 새로운 친구 관계, 병, 죽음 같은 많은 일이 일어날 수 있습니다. 좋은 일이든 나쁜 일이든 우리 삶을 바꿔놓을 만한 일이 우리를 덮치려고 길모퉁이에 숨어 기다리고 있을지도 모릅니다. 우리는 단지 모르고 있을 뿐입니다. 하지만 우리 사랑의 하나님 아버지는 변치 않으신다는 것을 알게 되니 얼마나 위로가 되는지요.

시편기자는 “주는 한결같으시고 주의 연대는 무궁하리이다”(시편 102:27)라고 말합니다. 이 진리가 뜻하는 바는 실로 대단 합니다. 그것은 바로 하나님은 영원토록 사랑을 베푸시고 공의로우시며 지혜로우시다는 것입니다. 성경학자 아서 핑크는 아주 놀라운 필치로 이렇게 썼습니다. “우주가 창조되기 전에 하나님의 속성이 어떠하셨든, 그것들은 지금도 정확하게 똑같고 앞으로도 영원히 변함없을 것이다.”

신약에서 야고보는 이렇게 말합니다. “온갖 좋은 은사와 온전한 선물이 다 위로부터 빛들의 아버지께로부터 내려오나니 그는 변함도 없으시고 회전하는 그림자도 없으시니라”(야고보서 1:17). 우리의 상황이 변하더라도 선하신 우리 하나님의 성품은 언제나 변하지 않을 거라는 것을 우리는 확신할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 모든 선한 것의 근원이시며, 그래서 하나님이 행하시는 모든 일도 다 선합니다.

영원히 지속되는 것은 아무것도 없는 것처럼 보일지 모르지만, 하나님은 그분의 백성들에게 영원히 변함없이 선하게 남아 계실 것입니다.

What Lasts Forever?

My friend, who had gone through many difficulties recently, wrote, “As I reflect on the past four semesters of student life, so many things have changed . . . . It is scary, really scary. Nothing stays forever.”

Indeed, many things can happen in two years—a career change, newfound friendship, illness, death. Good or bad, a life-altering experience may be lurking just around the corner, waiting to pounce! We simply don’t know. What great comfort, then, to know that our loving heavenly Father does not change.

The psalmist says, “You remain the same, and your years will never end” (PS. 102:27). The implication of this truth is immense. It means that God is forever loving, just, and wise. As Bible teacher Arthur W. Pink so wonderfully states: “Whatever the attributes of God were before the universe was called into existence, they are precisely the same now, and will remain so forever.”

In the New Testament, James writes, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows” (JAMES 1:17). In our changing circumstances, we can be assured that our good God will always be consistent to His character. He is the source of everything good, and everything He does is good.

It may seem that nothing lasts forever, but our God will remain consistently good to those who are His own. - POH FANG CHIA

코시의 용기

토고의 모노강에서 세례식 순서를 기다리고 있던 코시는 몸을 숙여 낡은 목각 상을 집어 들었습니다. 그의 가족은 대대로 그 물건을 신으로 섬겨왔습니다. 가족들은 코시가 예식을위해 준비한 불 속으로 그 기이한 목각 상을 던지는 것을 보았습니다. 이제 더 이상 그 신에게 가장 좋은 닭을 뽑아 제물로 드리지 않을 것이었습니다.

서양의 그리스도인들은 대부분 하나님의 자리를 대신 차지하고 있는 것을 우상이라고 생각합니다. 하지만 서아프리카의 토고에서 우상이란 말 그대로 희생제물을 바쳐서 달래야만 하는 신입니다. 우상을 불태우고 세례를 받는 것은 새 성도로서 유일하신 참 하나님께 충성을 나타내는 용기 있는 표현입니다.

우상숭배와 성욕에 사로잡힌 문화가 만연했던 시기에 요시야가 여덟 살의 나이로 왕위에 올랐습니다. 그의 아버지와 할아버지는 유대의 추악한 역사를 통틀어 최악의 왕으로 꼽힌 사람들이었습니다. 그때 대제사장이 율법책을 발견하였습니다. 어린 왕은 말씀을 듣고 그것을 마음 깊이 받아들였습니다(열왕기하 22:8-13). 요시야는 이방신의 제단을 허물고, 아세라 여신에게 바쳤던 더러운 물건들을 불태우며, 매춘 의식을 금지시켰습니다(23장). 그는 그 모든 것들 대신에 유월절을 지켰습니다 (23:21-23).

하나님을 떠나 문제를 해결하려 할 때마다 우리는 의식적이든 무의식적이든 잘못된 신을 좇게 됩니다. 우리 자신에게 지혜롭게 물어봅시다. 실제적인 것이든 상징적인 것이든 우리가 불 속에 던져야 할 우상은 무엇입니까?

Kossi’s Courage

As he awaited his baptism in Togo’s Mono River, Kossi stooped to pick up a worn wooden carving. His family had worshiped the object for generations. Now they watched as he tossed the grotesque figure into a fire prepared for the occasion. No longer would their choicest chickens be sacrificed to this god.

In the West, most Christians think of idols as metaphors for what they put in place of God. In Togo, West Africa, idols represent literal gods that must be appeased with sacrifice. Idol burning and baptism make a courageous statement about a new believer’s allegiance to the one true God.

As an eight-year-old, King Josiah came to power in an idol-worshiping, sex-obsessed culture. His father and grandfather had been two of the worst kings in all of Judah’s sordid history. Then the high priest discovered
the book of the law. When the young king heard its words, he took them to heart (2 KINGS 22:8–13). Josiah destroyed the pagan altars, burned the vile items dedicated to the goddess Asherah, and stopped the ritual prostitution (CH. 23). In place of these practices, he celebrated the Passover (23:21–23).

Whenever we look for answers apart from God—consciously or subconsciously—we pursue a false god. It would be wise to ask ourselves: What idols, literal or figurative, do we need to throw on the fire? - TIM GUSTAFSON

말씀으로 하루를 마치기

20세기 중반의 역동적인 기독교 지도자이자 네비게이토 선교회의 창설자인 도슨 트로트만은 성경이 각 그리스도인의 삶에 얼마나 중요한지를 역설했습니다. 트로트만은 그가 “말씀으로 하루를 마치기”라고 불렀던 그 일을 실행하면서 하루를 마무리했습니다. 잠들기 전에 그는 외웠던 성경 구절을 깊이 묵상하고, 말씀이 그의 삶에서 어떻게 자리 잡았고 어떤 영향을 주었는지에 대해 기도했습니다. 그는 매일 생각하는 마지막 말도 하나님의 말씀이 되기를 바랐습니다.

시편기자 다윗은 “내가 나의 침상에서 주를 기억하며 새벽에 주의 말씀을 작은 소리로 읊조릴 때에 하오리니 주는 나의 도움이 되셨음이라 내가 주의 날개 그늘에서 즐겁게 부르리이다”(시편 6 3 : 6 - 7 )라고 기록했습니다. 하루가 힘들었든 평안했든, 잠자리에서 하는 마지막 묵상은 하나님이 주시는 안식과 위로로 우리 마음을 편안하게 해줄 수 있습니다. 그리고 그것이 다음 날 아침의 첫 생각으로도 이어질수 있습니다.

한 친구 부부는 네 명의 자녀와 함께 성경구절과 매일매일의 경건의 글을 크게 읽으면서 하루를 마칩니다. 그 부부는 아이들의 질문과 생각을 즐거이 들어주며 가정과 학교에서 어떻게 예수님을 따라야 할지에 대해 대화를 나눕니다. 그들은 그것을 그들만의 “말씀으로 하루를 마치기” 라고 부릅니다.

하루를 마무리하기에 이 얼마나 좋은 방법입니까!

His Word the Last Word

Dawson Trotman, a dynamic Christian leader of the midtwentieth century and founder of The Navigators, emphasized the importance of the Bible in the life of every Christian. Trotman ended each day with a practice he called “His Word the last word.” Before going to sleep he meditated on a memorized Bible verse or passage, then prayed about its place and influence in his life. He wanted the last words he thought about each day to be God’s words.

The psalmist David wrote, “On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings” (PS. 63:6–7). Whether we are in great difficulty or enjoying a time of peace, our last thought at night can ease our minds with the rest and comfort God gives. It may also set the tone for our first thought the next morning.

A friend and his wife conclude each day by reading aloud a Bible passage and daily devotional with their four children. They welcome questions and thoughts from each child and talk about what it means to follow Jesus at home and school. They call it their version of “His Word the last word” for each day.

긍휼히 여기는 마음

우리 일행 일곱 명은 청중들로 가득한 놀이공원에서 음악공연을 관람하고 있었습니다. 우리는 바짝 붙어 다 같이 한 줄에 앉으려고 했는데 어떤 여자가 갑자기 우리 사이에 끼어들었습니다. 내 아내가 우리가 같이 앉을 자리라고 그녀에게 말했지만, 그녀는 즉시 “그래서요.” 라고 말하며 동행 두 명까지 우리 줄에 끼어들게 했습니다.

할 수 없이 우리 중 셋은 다른 넷이 앉은 뒷줄에 앉았는데, 그때 내 아내 수는 그 여자가 몸이 불편한 사람과 함께 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그 친구를 돌보기 위해 그녀도 작은 그룹을 만들어 함께 앉으려했던 것입니다. 그러자 갑자기 우리의 짜증이 사라졌습니다. 수가 말했습니다. “이렇게 혼잡한 곳에서 저분이 얼마나 힘들었을까 생각해보세요.” 사실 그 여자가 무례하게 반응하기는 했지만, 우리는 화를 내지 않고 긍휼로 대할 수 있었습니다.

우리는 어디를 가든지 긍휼이 필요한 사람들을 만날 것입니다. 바울 사도가 “너희는 하나님이 택하사 거룩하고 사랑받는 자처럼 긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음을 옷 입고”(골로새서 3:12)라고 한 이 말은 우리의 눈길을 바꾸어 우리 주위의 한 사람 한 사람을 은혜의 손길이 필요한 사람들로 바라보도록 도와줄 수 있을 것입니다. 그는 또 우리가 “서로 용납하여 피차 용서하라”(13절)고도 권면합니다.

우리가 긍휼을 보일 때 사람들이 우리를 위해 은혜와 긍휼의 마음을 쏟아 부으신 그분을 보게 될 것입니다.

A Heart of Compassion

Seven of us were attending a musical production at a crowded amusement park. Wanting to sit together, we tried to squeeze into one row. But as we did, a woman rushed between us. My wife mentioned to her that we wanted to stay together, but the woman quickly said, “Too bad,” as she and her two companions pushed on into the row.

As three of us sat one row behind the other four, my wife, Sue, noticed that the woman had an adult with her who appeared to have special needs. She had been trying to keep her little group together so she could take care of her friend. Suddenly, our irritation faded. Sue said, “Imagine how tough things are for her in a crowded place like this.” Yes, perhaps the woman did respond rudely. But we could respond with compassion rather than anger.

Wherever we go, we will encounter people who need compassion. Perhaps these words from the apostle Paul can help us view everyone around us in a different light—as people who need the gentle touch of grace. “As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (COL. 3:12). He also suggests that we “bear with each other and forgive one another” (V. 13).

As we show compassion, we will be pointing others to the One who poured out His heart of grace and compassion on us. - DAVE BRANON

보이지 않게 뒤에서

내 딸이 궁금한 것에 대해 답을 빨리 알고 싶어 친구에게 문자메시지를 보냈습니다. 친구가 문자를 확인했다는 휴대폰 표시를 본 딸은 초조하게 답을 기다렸습니다. 단지 잠시 시간이 지났을 뿐인데도 딸은 답신이 늦어지자 실망하고 짜증을 냈습니다. 그 불안감은 걱정으로 변해서, 딸은 혹시 자신과 친구 사이에 무슨 문제가 있어서 답신이 오지 않는 것은 아닐까 하는 생각까지 하였습니다. 마침내 답신을 받고 나서야 딸은 친구와 아무 문제가 없음을 알고 마음을 놓았습니다. 친구는 문제에 답하기 위해 세부적인 것들을 정리하고 있었던 것뿐이었습니다.

구약의 다니엘 선지자도 초조한 마음으로 응답을 기다리고 있었습니다. 큰 전쟁에 관한 무서운 환상을 본 다니엘은 금식하고 겸비한 자세로 기도하며 하나님을 찾았지만(10:3,12), 3주 동안 아무런 응답도 받지 못했습니다(2,13절). 마침내 한 천사가 다니엘에게 와서 하나님께서 다니엘의 기도를 “첫날부터” 들으셨다고 알려주었습니다. 그동안 천사는 다니엘의 기도를 위해 대신 싸우고 있었고, 다니엘이 처음에는 알지 못했지만 하나님께서 그의 첫 기도부터 천사가 찾아온 때까지 21일간 매일 일하고 계셨습니다.

하나님이 우리의 기도를 들으신다고 확신하면서도 우리가 원하는 시간에 응답이 오지 않으면 우리는 초조해 합니다. 하나님께서 돌보시지 않는 것 같은 의심이 들기도 합니다. 그렇지만 다니엘의 경험은 우리에게 분명하게 보이지 않을 때조차도 하나님은 사랑하는 자들을 위해 일하고 계신다는 것을 일깨워줍니다.

Behind the Scenes

My daughter sent a text message to a friend, in hopes of having a question answered quickly. Her phone’s messaging service showed that the recipient had read the message, so she waited anxiously for a reply. Mere moments passed, yet she grew frustrated, groaning her annoyance at the delay. Irritation eroded into worry; she wondered whether the lack of response meant there was a problem between them. Eventually a reply came and my daughter was relieved to see their relationship was fine. Her friend had simply been sorting out the details needed to answer the question.

The Old Testament prophet Daniel also anxiously awaited a reply. After receiving a frightening vision of great war, Daniel fasted and sought God through humble prayer (10:3, 12). For three weeks, he received no reply (VV. 2,13). Finally, an angel arrived and assured Daniel his prayers had been heard “since the first day.” In the meantime, the angel had been battling on behalf of those prayers. Though Daniel didn’t know it at first, God was at work during each of the twenty-one days that elapsed between his first prayer and the angel’s coming.

The confidence that God hears our prayers can cause us to become anxious when His reply doesn’t come when we want it to. We are prone to wonder whether He cares. Yet Daniel’s experience reminds us that God is at work on behalf of those He loves even when it isn’t obvious to us. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

‘예’가 ‘아니오’를 뜻할 때

하나님께 감사하게도 나는 어머니가 백혈병으로 투병하시는 동안 어머니와 함께 지내며 직접 간호할 기회를 가질 수 있었습니다. 약이 도움이 되기보다는 고통을 더 많이 주기 시작하자 어머니는 치료를 중단하기로 결심하셨습니다. 어머니는 “더 이상은 고통 받고 싶지 않구나. 가족들과 함께 마지막 날들을 즐겁게 보내고 싶어. 하나님은 내가 천국에 갈 준비가 된 것을 알고 계셔.”라고 말씀하셨습니다.

나는 하나님께서 기적을 베풀어주실 것을 확신하며 위대한 의사이신 사랑의 하나님 아버지께 간청했습니다. 하지만 하나님이 어머니의 기도를 들어주시면 내 기도를 들어주실 수가 없었습니다. 나는 “주님 뜻대로 이루어주소서”라고 하며 눈물로 주님께 모든 것을 맡겼습니다.

얼마 지나지 않아 예수님이 어머니를 고통이 없는 영원한 곳으로 맞아들이셨습니다.

예수님이 다시 오실 때까지 우리는 타락한 이 세상에서 고난을 겪게 될 것입니다(로마서 8:22-25). 우리의 죄성과 편견, 그리고 고통에 대한 두려움 때문에 우리가 가진 기도의 능력이 훼손될 수도 있습니다. 하지만 감사하게도 “성령께서 하나님의 뜻을 따라 성도를 대신하여 간구하십니다”(27절, 새번역). 하나님이 누군가에게 ‘예’라고 응답하신 것이 우리에게는 가슴 아픈 ‘아니오’가 된다 하더라도, 하나님은 그분을 사랑하는 자들에게는 모든 것이 합력하여 선을 이룬다는 것을 우리에게 일깨워주십니다(28절).

하나님의 더 큰 계획 속에 있는 우리의 작은 부분을 받아들일 때, 우리는 어머니가 입버릇처럼 말씀하셨던 “하나님은 선하신 분이란다. 정말 그런 분이시지. 하나님이 어떻게 결정하시든 나는 평안하단다.”라는 말에 공감할 수 있습니다. 주님의 선하심을 확신하면, 우리는 주님께서 모든 기도를 그분의 뜻에 따라 그분의 영광을 위해 응답하신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다.

When Yes Means No

I thanked God for the privilege of serving as my mom’s live-in caregiver during her battle against leukemia. When medicines began to hurt more than help, she decided to stop treatment. “I don’t want to suffer anymore,” she said. “I want to enjoy my last days with family. God knows I’m ready to go home.”

I pleaded with our loving heavenly Father—the Great Physician—confident He could work miracles. But to say yes to my mom’s prayers, He would have to say no to mine. Sobbing, I surrendered, “Your will be done, Lord.”

Soon after, Jesus welcomed my mama into a pain-free eternity.

In this fallen world, we’ll experience suffering until Jesus returns (ROM. 8:22–25). Our sinful nature, limited vision, and fear of pain can distort our ability to pray. Thankfully, “the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God” (V. 27). He reminds us that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him (V. 28), even when His yes to someone else means a heartbreaking no for us.

When we accept our small part in His greater purpose, we can echo my mom’s watchword: “God is good, and that’s all there is to it. Whatever He decides, I’m at peace.” With confidence in the Lord’s goodness, we can trust Him to answer every prayer according to His will and for His glory. - XOCHITL DIXON

가장 귀한 초대

나는 이번 주에 우편으로 몇 개의 초대장을 받았습니다. 은퇴, 부동산, 생명보험에 관한 “무료” 세미나에 오라는 초대장들은 바로 쓰레기통에 버렸는데, 오래된 친구를 기리는 모임에 오라는 초대에는 즉시 “예, 참석합니다.”라고 답장했습니다. 초대+갈망=수락.

이사야 55장 1절 말씀은 성경에 있는 귀한 초대 중의 하나입니다. 주님은 어려운 처지에 빠져 있는 그의 백성들에게 “너희 모든 목마른 자들아 물로 나아오라 돈 없는 자도 오라 너희는 와서 사 먹되 돈 없이, 값없이 와서 포도주와 젖을 사라”고 말씀하셨습니다. 이것은 내면의 영양분과, 깊은 영혼의 만족과, 영원한 생명을 주시려는 하나님의 엄청난 초대입니다(2-3절).

예수님의 초대는 성경의 마지막 장에도 다시 나옵니다. “성령과 신부가 말씀하시기를 오라 하시는도다 듣는 자도 오라 할 것이요 목마른 자도 올 것이요 또 원하는 자는 값없이 생명수를 받으라 하시더라” (요한계시록 22:17).

우리는 흔히 영생이란 우리가 죽을 때 시작되는 것이라고 생각합니다. 그러나 사실 영생은 우리가 예수 그리스도를 우리의 구주와 주님으로 영접할 때 시작됩니다.

주님 안에 있는 영생을 찾으라고 하는 하나님의 초대는 모든 초대 중에서 가장 귀한 초대입니다! 초대+갈망=수락.

The Greatest Invitation

During a recent week, I received several invitations in the mail. Those inviting me to attend “free” seminars on retirement, real estate, and life insurance were immediately thrown away. But the invitation to a gathering
honoring a longtime friend caused me to reply immediately, “Yes! I accept.” Invitation + Desire = Acceptance.

Isaiah 55:1 is one of the great invitations in the Bible. The Lord said to His people who were in difficult circumstances, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.” This is God’s remarkable offer of inner nourishment, deep spiritual satisfaction, and everlasting life (VV. 2–3).

Jesus’s invitation is repeated in the last chapter of the Bible: “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come!’ Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life” (REV. 22:17).

We often think of eternal life as beginning when we die. In reality, it begins when we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord.

God’s invitation to find eternal life in Him is the greatest invitation of all! Invitation + Desire = Acceptance. - DAVID MCCASLAND

삶과 죽음

나는 친구의 오빠가 임종하던 순간을 결코 잊을 수 없습니다. 그것은 평범한 장면 중의 하나였지만 그 순간 아주 특별한 누군가가 그곳을 찾아왔습니다. 우리 셋이 조용히 이야기를 하고 있는데 리처드의 숨소리가 점점 거칠어져 가는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 우리는 그에게 가까이 다가가 지켜보며 기다리며 기도했습니다. 그가 마지막 숨을 거두었을 때, 마치 거룩한 한 순간처럼 느껴졌습니다. 한 훌륭한 남자가 40대의 나이에 죽는 것을 슬퍼하며 울고 있을 때, 하나님의 임재가 우리를 감싸주었던 것입니다.

많은 믿음의 영웅들은 죽을 때에 하나님의 신실하심을 경험했습니다. 예를 들어, 야곱은 곧 “[자기] 조상들에게로 돌아간다”고 말했고(창세기 49:29-33), 야곱의 아들 요셉도 “나는 죽을 것”이라고 말하며 자신의 임박한 죽음을 알리면서, 그의 형제들에게 어떻게 믿음을 굳게 잡을 수 있는지를 가르쳐주었습니다. 그는 평온히 죽음을 맞이하면서도 자신의 형제들이 주님을 신뢰할 것을 간곡히 권면했습니다(50:24).

우리 중 어느 누구도 언제 어떻게 마지막 숨을 거두게 될지 모르지만, 우리는 하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다는 것을 믿을 수 있도록 도와달라고 간구할 수 있습니다. 우리는 예수님이 하나님 아버지 집에 우리 거처를 마련하실 거라는 약속을 믿을 수 있습니다(요한복음 14:2-3).

Life and Death

I will never forget sitting at the bedside of my friend’s brother when he died; the scene was one of the ordinary visited by the extraordinary. Three of us were talking quietly when we realized that Richard’s breathing was becoming more labored. We gathered around him, watching, waiting, and praying. When he took his last breath, it felt like a holy moment; the presence of God enveloped us in the midst of our tears over a wonderful man dying in his forties.

Many of the heroes of our faith experienced God’s faithfulness when they died. For instance, Jacob announced he would soon be “gathered to [his] people” (GEN. 49:29–33). Jacob’s son Joseph also announced his impending death: “I am about to die,” he said to his brothers while instructing them how to hold firm in their faith. He seems to be at peace, yet eager that his brothers trust the Lord (50:24).

None of us knows when or how we will breathe our last breath, but we can ask God to help us trust that He will be with us. We can believe the promise that Jesus will prepare a place for us in His Father’s house (JOHN 14:2–3). - AMY BOUCHER PYE

불 시련

지난 겨울 콜로라도의 자연사 박물관을 방문했을 때, 나는 사시나무에 대한 아주 놀라운 사실을 배우게 되었습니다. 늘씬하고 하얀 몸통을 가진 사시나무 숲 전체가 단 하나의 씨앗에서 시작되며, 그 숲 전체는 하나의 뿌리로 엮어져 있다는 것입니다. 이런 뿌리구조는 지상으로 나무를 자라게 하든 않든, 수천 년을 생존할 수 있습니다. 뿌리들은 땅 밑에서 잠을 자면서, 불이나 홍수나 눈사태가 나서 숲속의 그늘진 곳에 나무가 자랄 수 있는 공터가 마련되기를 기다립니다. 자연재해로 숲속에 공터가 생기면 사시나무의 뿌리들은 마침내 햇빛을 감지하고 비로소 어린 묘목들을 지상으로 내보내어 사시나무로 자라게 합니다.

사시나무는 자연재해로 황폐해진 것을 바탕으로 새로운 나무들을 자라게 합니다. 야고보는 우리의 믿음도 어려움을 겪음으로 성장할 수 있다고 말합니다. “너희가 여러 가지 시험을 당하거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기라 이는 너희 믿음의 시련이 인내를 만들어 내는 줄 너희가 앎이라 인내를 온전히 이루라 이는 너희로 온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하려 함이라”(야고보서 1:2-4).

시련을 당하면서 기뻐하기는 어렵지만, 하나님이 어려운 상황들을 사용하여 우리가 성숙해지도록 도와주신다는 사실을 알기에 우리는 희망을 가질 수 있습니다. 사시나무처럼, 고난이 우리의 마음에 빈 공간을 만들어 하나님의 빛이 우리를 만질 수 있을 때, 시련의 시기에도 우리의 믿음은 자랄 수 있습니다.

Trial by Fire

Last winter while visiting a natural history museum in Colorado, I learned some remarkable facts about the aspen tree. An entire grove of slender, white-trunked aspens can grow from a single seed and share the same
root system. These root systems can exist for thousands of years whether or not they produce trees. They sleep underground, waiting for fire, flood, or avalanche to clear a space for them in the shady forest. After a natural disaster has cleared the land, aspen roots can sense the sun at last. The roots send up saplings, which become trees.

For aspens, new growth is made possible by the devastation of a natural disaster. James writes that our growth in faith is also made possible by difficulties. “Consider it pure joy,” he writes, “whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (JAMES 1:2–4).

It’s difficult to be joyful during trials, but we can take hope from the fact that God will use difficult circumstances to help us reach maturity. Like aspen trees, faith can grow in times of trial when difficulty clears space in our hearts for the light of God to touch us. - AMY PETERSON

좋은 열매 맺기

비행기 창으로 보이는 경치는 환상적이었습니다. 잘 익어가는 좁고 기다란 밀밭과 과수원이 두 개의 민둥산 사이에서 천천히 출렁이고 있었고, 골짜기에는 생명을 주는 물, 그것 없이는 아무런 열매를 맺을 수 없는 강이 흐르고 있었습니다.

깨끗한 물이 있어야 풍성한 수확이 있는 것처럼, 나의 말이나 행동, 태도 같은 내 삶의 ‘열매’의 풍성함도 나의 영적인 영양상태에 달려 있습니다. 시편기자는 시편 1편에서 이렇게 노래합니다. “주의 율법을 즐거워하는 사람은......시냇가에 심은 나무가 철을 따라 열매를 맺음......같으니”(1-3절). 그리고 바울 사도는 갈라디아서 5장에서 성령을 따라 사는 사람들에게는 “사랑과 희락과 화평과 오래 참음과 자비와 양선과 충성과 온유와 절제”(22-23절)와 같은 특징이 있다고 했습니다.

가끔은 나의 환경에 대한 마음가짐이 날카로워지거나, 행동과 말이 계속 퉁명스러워질 때가 있습니다. 그때는 좋은 열매가 나타나지 않으며, 내가 하나님 말씀 앞에서 조용히 시간을 보내지 않았다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 그러나 하루하루의 리듬을 하나님께 깊이 의지하게 되면 나는 좋은 열매를 맺습니다. 그때에는 다른 사람들을 대할 때 인내와 온유로 하게 되며, 불평보다는 감사를 선택하는 것이 더 쉬워집니다.

우리에게 자신을 계시해주신 하나님이 우리의 힘과 지혜, 기쁨, 깨달음, 그리고 평화의 원천입니다(시편 119:28,98,111,144,165). 우리를 하나님께로 향하게 하는 말씀 안에 우리의 영혼을 흠뻑 적시면, 우리 삶에 성령님이 역사하시는 것이 확실히 보일 것입니다.

Bearing Good Fruit

The view from my airplane window was striking: a narrow ribbon of ripening wheat fields and orchards wending between two barren mountains. Running through the valley was a river—life-giving water, without which there would be no fruit.

Just as a bountiful harvest depends on a source of clean water, the quality of the “fruit” in my life—my words, actions, and attitude—depends on my spiritual nourishment. The psalmist describes this in Psalm 1: The person “whose delight is in the law of the Lord . . . is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season” (VV. 1–3). And Paul writes in Galatians 5 that those who walk in step with the Spirit are marked by “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (VV. 22–23).

Sometimes my perspective on my circumstances turns sour, or my actions and words become persistently unkind. There is no good fruit, and I realize I haven’t spent time being quiet before the words of my God. But when the rhythm of my days is rooted in reliance on Him, I bear good fruit. Patience and gentleness characterize my interactions with others; it’s easier to choose gratitude over complaint.

The God who has revealed Himself to us is our source of strength, wisdom, joy, understanding, and peace (PS. 119:28, 98, 111, 144, 165). As we steep our souls in the words that point us to Him, the work of God’s Spirit will be evident in our lives. - PETER CHIN, GUEST WRITER
