성탄절 불빛

매년 크리스마스 계절이 되면 싱가포르의 관광명소인 ‘오차드 거리’는 몇 주 동안 많은 불빛과 색깔들로 가득한 동화의 나라로 변합니다. 이 불빛들은 연말 대목 기간인 12월 한 달 동안 거리에 있는 많은 상점에서 관광객들이 더 많은 돈을 쓰게 하기 위해 마련한 것입니다. 쇼핑객들은 축제분위기를 즐기고, 합창단이 부르는 귀에 익은 성탄 캐럴을 들으며, 흥겨운 공연들을 보기 위해 이곳으로 옵니다.

첫 크리스마스의 ‘점등 장식’은 요즘처럼 전선과 반짝이와 네온 빛으로 된 것이 아니라, “그들을 두루 비춘 주의 영광”(누가복음 2:9)으로 된 것이었습니다. 관광객들이 본 것도 아니고, 단지 들판에서 양을 치던 몇몇 평범한 목자들만 그것을 보았습니다. 그리고 이어서 “지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광”(14절)이라는, 기대하지 않았던 천사들의 합창이 울려 퍼졌습니다.

목자들은 천사들이 말한 것이 사실인지 알아보기 위해 베들레헴으로 갔습니다(15절). 그들은 사실을 확인한 후, 그들이 보고 들은 것을 말하지 않을 수 없었습니다. “(그들이) 보고 천사가 자기들에게 이 아기에 대하여 말한 것을 전하니”(17절).

우리 중 많은 사람들은 지금껏 크리스마스 이야기를 자주 들어보았을 것입니다. 이번 크리스마스에는 “세상의 빛”으로 오신 그리스도를(요한복음 8:12) 다른 사람들과 나누어보지 않겠습니까?

Christmas Lights

Each year for several weeks around Christmas, Singapore’s tourist belt, Orchard Road, is transformed into a wonderland of lights and colors. This light-up is designed to attract tourists to spend their money at the many stores along the street during this “golden month of business.” Shoppers come to enjoy the festivities, listen to choirs sing familiar Christmas carols, and watch performers entertain.

The first Christmas “light-up” ever was not created by electrical cables, glitter, and neon lights but by “the glory of the Lord [that] shone around” (Luke 2:9). No tourists saw it, just a few simple shepherds out in their field. And it was followed by an unexpected rendition of “Glory to God in the Highest” by an angelic choir (v. 14).

The shepherds went to Bethlehem to see if what the angels said was true (v. 15). After they had confirmed it, they could not keep to themselves what they had heard and seen. “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child” (v. 17).

Many of us have heard the Christmas story often. This Christmas, why not share the good news with others that Christ—“the light of the world”—has come (John 8:12).

“무덤 7”의 보물

1932년 멕시코의 고고학자 알폰소 카소가 멕시코 남부 와하까 주의 몬떼 알반에서 ‘무덤 7’을 발견했습니다. 4백여 점이 넘는 유물이 그곳에서 발견되었는데, 그중에는 “몬떼 알반의 보물”이라 불리는 스페인정복 이전의 보석 수백 가지도 있었습니다. 그것은 멕시코 고고학에 있어 주요 발견 중의 하나였는데, 원형 그대로 보존된 비취로 된 잔을 손에 쥔 카소가 얼마나 흥분했었는지는 상상에 맡길 수밖에 없습니다.

오래 전 시편기자는 금이나 보석보다 더 값진 보물에 관해 썼습니다. “사람이 많은 탈취물을 얻은 것처럼 나는 주의 말씀을 즐거워하나이다”(시편 119:162). 시편 119
편에서, 기자는 하나님의 교훈과 약속이 우리의 삶에 얼마나 가치 있는 것인지를 알았기에, 승리한 정복자가 손에 쥐게 된 굉장한 보물에 그것들을 비유했습니다.

카소의 이름은 “무덤 7”에서 발견된 유물 때문에 지금도 기억되고 있습니다. 와하까의 박물관을 방문하면 우리도 그 유물들을 즐길 수 있습니다. 그러나 시편기자가 말하는 보물은 바로 우리의 손끝에 있습니다. 매일 성경을 파고듦으로써 우리는 언약의 다이아몬드, 희망의 루비, 지혜의 에메랄드를 발견할 수 있습니다. 하지만 우리가 발견하게 되는 무엇보다 가장 위대한 것은 성경이 가리키고 있는 사람, 곧 예수 그리스도입니다. 뭐니 뭐니 해도, 예수님은 성경의 저자이십니다.

이것이 우리를 부유하게 해줄 보물이라는 확신을 가지고 부지런히 찾으십시다. 시편기자의 말처럼, “주의 증거들로 내가 영원히 나의 기업을 삼았사오니 이는 내 마음의 즐거움이 됨이니이다”(111절).

The Treasure in Tomb 7

In 1932, Mexican archaeologist Alfonso Caso discovered Tomb 7 at Monte Alban, Oaxaca. He found more than four hundred artifacts, including hundreds of pieces of pre-Hispanic jewelry he called “The Treasure of Monte Alban.” It is one of the major finds of Mexican archaeology. One can only imagine Caso’s excitement as he held a jade cup in its purest form.

Centuries earlier, the psalmist wrote of a treasure more valuable than gold or rock crystal. He said, “I rejoice in your promise like one who finds great spoil” (Ps. 119:162). In Psalm 119, the writer knew how valuable God’s instructions and promises are to our lives, so he compared them to the great treasure that comes in hand with the victory of a conqueror.

Caso’s name is remembered today because of his discovery in Tomb 7. We can enjoy it if we visit a museum in Oaxaca. However, the psalmist’s treasure is at our fingertips. Day by day we can dig into the Scriptures and find diamonds of promises, rubies of hope, and emeralds of wisdom. But by far the greatest thing we find is the person whom the book points to: Jesus Himself. After all, He is the Author of the book.

Let us seek diligently with the confidence that this is the treasure that will enrich us. As the psalmist said, “Your laws are my treasure; they are my heart’s delight” (v. 111 nlt).

듣는 자와 행하는 자

목회자인 내 남편에게 한밤중에 전화가 걸려 왔습니다. 우리 교회의 중보기도팀 중 한 분인, 혼자 살고 있던 70대 여성이 지금 병원으로 실려 가고 있다는 것이었습니다. 그녀는 병세가 너무 심해 더 이상 먹거나 마시지도 못하고 보지도 걷지도 못했습니다. 그녀가 어떻게 될지 모르는 상황에서 우리는 특히 그녀가 제대로 돌봄을 받고 있는지를 걱정하며 하나님께 도움과 자비를 구했습니다. 교회는 24시간 계속 사람들이 그녀를 방문할 수 있도록 계획을 짰는데, 이들은 그녀를 돌볼 뿐 아니라 다른 환자들과 방문객들, 그리고 병원직원들에게도 그리스도의 사랑을 보여주었습니다.

야고보는 초기의 유대인 기독교인 들에게 보낸 편지에서 교회가 궁핍한 사람들을 보살필 것을 권면했습니다. 야고보는 신자들이 하나님의 말씀을 단순히 듣는데 그치지 않고 그들의 믿음을 행동으로 실천하기를 원했습니다(1:22-25). 그는 고아들과 과부들을 보살필 필요를 말하며(27절) 그들을 연약한 사람들이라고 했는데, 그것은 고대시대에는 가족이 있다면 가족이 그들을 보살필 책임이 있었기 때문입니다.

우리는 교회 안에서나 밖에서 위험에 처한 사람들을 어떻게 대하고 있습니까? 우리는 믿음을 실천하는 중요한 행동의 하나로 과부와 고아들을 돌보고 있습니까? 하나님께서 우리의 눈을 열어 도처에 도움이 필요한 사람들을 섬길 기회를 볼 수 있게 해주시기를 바랍니다.

Listeners and Doers

The phone rang in the night for my husband, a minister. One of the prayer warriors in our church, a woman in her seventies who lived alone, was being taken to the hospital. She was so ill that she was no longer eating or drinking, nor could she see or walk. Not knowing if she would live or die, we asked God for His help and mercy, feeling particularly concerned for her welfare. The church sprang into action with a round-the-clock schedule of visitors who not only ministered to her but showed Christian love to the other patients, visitors, and medical staff.

James’s letter to the early Jewish Christians encouraged the church to care for the needy. James wanted the believers to go beyond just listening to the Word of God and to put their beliefs into action (1:22–25). By citing the need to care for orphans and widows (v. 27), he named a vulnerable group, for in the ancient world the family would have been responsible for their care.

How do we respond to those who are at risk in our church and community? Do we see caring for the widows and orphans as a vital part of the exercise of our faith? May God open our eyes to the opportunities to serve people in need everywhere.

조용한 대화

당신은 혼잣말을 할 때가 있습니까? 나는 집에서 어떤 일을 할 때, 대개는 자동차를 고치는 동안에 제일 좋은 수리 방법들을 이것저것 생각하며 중얼거리면 도움이 된다는 것을 발견했습니다. 혼자 말하는 것은 우리 대부분에게 매일 흔히 있는 일이지만, 다른 사람이 내가 중얼거리는 것을 보게 된다면 좀 멋쩍을 수도 있습니다.

시편기자들도 때 로 는 시편에서 자신에게 말하곤 했습니다. 시편 116편 기자도 예외가 아닙니다. 7절에서 그는 “내 영혼아 네 평안함으로 돌아갈지어다 여호와께서 너를 후대하심이로다”라고 기록하고 있습니다. 지난날에 보여주셨던 하나님의 친절과 신실하심을 자신에게 상기시키면 현재의 자신에게 실질적인 위로와 도움이 됩니다. 우리는 이와 같은 “대화들”을 시편에서 자주 봅니다. 시편 103편 1절에서 다윗은 자신에게 “내 영혼아 여호와를 송축하라 내 속에 있는 것들아 다 그의 거룩한 이름을 송축하라”고 말하고 있습니다. 그리고 시편 62편 5절에서도 “나의 영혼아 잠잠히 하나님만 바라라 무릇 나의 소망이 그로부터 나오는도다”라고 단언하고 있습니다.

우리 자신에게 하나님의 신실하심과 그분을 향한 우리의 소망을 상기시키는 것은 좋은 일입니다. 우리도 시편기자들을 본받아 하나님이 우리에게 베풀어주신 많은 것들을 하나하나 되새겨보는 시간을 가질 수 있습니다. 그럴 때에 우리의 마음은 위로를 받을 것입니다. 과거에 신실하셨던 그 하나님이 미래에도 우리를 계속 사랑해주실 것입니다.

Quiet Conversations

Do you ever talk to yourself? Sometimes when I’m working on a project—usually under the hood of a car—I find it helpful to think aloud, working through my options
on the best way to make the repair. If someone catches me in my “conversation” it can be a little embarrassing—even though talking to ourselves is something most of us do every day.

The psalmists often talked to themselves in the Psalms. The author of Psalm 116 is no exception. In verse 7 he writes, “Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you. Reminding himself of God’s kindness and faithfulness in the past is a practical comfort and help to him in the present. We see “conversations” like this frequently in the Psalms. In Psalm 103:1 David tells himself, “Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.” And in Psalm 62:5 he affirms, “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.”

It’s good to remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness and the hope we have in Him. We can follow the example of the psalmist and spend some time naming the many ways God has been good to us. As we do, we’ll be encouraged. The same God who has been faithful in the past will continue His love for us in the future. - JAMES BANKS

400마일 상공에서 본 광경

“처음 우주공간을 여행하면서 지구에 대한 나의 생각이 완전히 바뀌었습니다.”라고 우주왕복선의 우주비행사 찰스 프랭크 볼든 2세는 말했습니다. 400마일 상공에서
지구를 내려다보니 그에게는 모든 것이 평화롭고 아름답게 보였습니다. 그러나 중동지방의 상공을 지나갈 때 그는 지금 그곳에서 벌어지고 있는 싸움을 생각하며 “정신을 차리고 현실로 돌아오게 되었다” 고 나중에 회고하였습니다. 영화제작자 자레드 레토와의 인터뷰에서 볼든은 그 순간 지구를 보면서 지구가 어떻게 되어야만 할까 하는 생각이 들면서 좀 더 나은 지구를 만들기 위해 할 수 있는 무엇이든 해야겠다는 도전의식을 느꼈다고 말했습니다.

예수님이 베들레헴에서 태어나셨을 때 세상은 하나님이 원래 의도하셨던 그런 세상이 아니었습니다. 이런 도덕적으로, 영적으로 캄캄한 가운데 있는 모든 사람들에게 예수님은 생명과 빛을 가져오셨습니다(요한복음 1:4). 세상은 비록 그를 알아보지 못했지만, “영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨습니다”(12절).

가정이 파탄 나고, 어린아이들이 굶주리며, 세상이 전쟁에 휩싸이는 등, 삶이 제대로 된 모습을 보이지 못할 때 우리는 깊은 슬픔에 잠깁니다. 그러나 하나님은 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 통해 누구나 새로운 삶을 시작할 수 있다고 약속하십니다.

성탄절은 구세주 예수님께서 그를 영접하고 따르는 모든 사람들에게 생명과 빛의 선물을 주신다는 것을 상기시켜줍니다.

The View from 400 Miles

“My perspective on earth changed dramatically the very first time I went into space,” says Space Shuttle astronaut Charles Frank Bolden Jr. From four hundred miles above the earth, all looked peaceful and beautiful to him. Yet Bolden recalled later that as he passed over the Middle East, he was “shaken into reality” when he considered the ongoing conflict there. During an interview with film producer Jared Leto, Bolden spoke of that moment as a time when he saw the earth with a sense of how it ought to be—and then sensed a challenge to do all he could to make it better.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the world was not the way God intended it. Into this moral and spiritual darkness Jesus came bringing life and light to all (JOHN 1:4). Even though the world didn’t recognize Him, “to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (V. 12).
When life is not the way it ought to be we are deeply saddened— when families break up, children go hungry, and the world wages war. But God promises that through faith in Christ anyone can begin to move in a new direction. The Christmas season reminds us that Jesus, the Savior, gives the gift of life and light to everyone who will receive and follow Him. - DAVID MCCASLAND

당신의 가치는?

이런 이야기가 있습니다. 기원전 75년에 줄리어스 시저라는 젊은 로마 귀족을 납치한 해적들이 몸값을 요구했습니다. 해적들이 몸값으로 은 20달란트(오늘날 약 60만불)를 요구하자, 시저는 웃으며 틀림없이 해적들이 자기가 누군지 전혀 알지 못하고 있다고 말했습니다. 그리고는 몸값을 50달란트로 올리라고 강요했습니다! 왜냐고요? 시저는 자신이 20 달란트보다 훨씬 더 값어치가 있다고 믿었기 때문입니다.

시저가 스스로 산정한 자신의 교만한 몸값과 하나님이 우리 각 사람에게 두신 가치가 얼마나 다릅니까. 우리의 가치는 화폐가치의 개념으로는 측정될 수 없고, 우리를 위해 하나님 아버지께서 하신 일로 측정됩니다.

우리를 구원하기 위해 주님이 지불하신 몸값이 무엇이었습니까? 우리의 죄로부터 우리를 구원하기 위해 십자가에서 돌아가신 하나님의 독생자의 죽음으로 하나님 아버지께서 그 값을 지불하 습니다. “너희가 알거니와 너희 조상이 물려준 헛된 행실에서 대속함을 받은 것은 은이나 금 같이 없어질 것으로 된 것이 아니요 오직 흠 없고 점 없는 어린 양 같은 그리스도의 보배로운 피로 된 것이니라”(베드로전서 1:18-19).

하나님이 우리를 너무 사랑하셔서 아들을 내어주어 십자가에서 죽게 하시고, 우리를 속량하여 구원하시기 위해 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 일으키셨습니다. 이것이 하나님이 보시는 우리의 가치입니다.

What Are You Worth?

There is a story that in 75 bc a young Roman nobleman named Julius Caesar was kidnapped by pirates and held for ransom. When they demanded 20 talents of silver in ransom (about $600,000 today), Caesar laughed and said they obviously had no idea who he was. He insisted they raise the ransom to 50 talents! Why? Because he believed he was worth far more than 20 talents.

What a difference we see between Caesar’s arrogant measure of his own worth and the value God places on each of us. Our worth is not measured in terms of monetary value but by what our
heavenly Father has done on our behalf.

What ransom did He pay to save us? Through the death of His only Son on the cross, the Father paid the price to rescue us from our sin. “It was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 PETER 1:18–19).

God loved us so much that He gave up His Son to die on the cross and rise from the dead to ransom and rescue us. That is what you are worth to Him. - BILL CROWDER

나는 부자다!

아마 이런 TV 광고를 보셨을 것입니다. 누군가 와서 현관문을 여니까 어떤 사람이 어마어마한 액수의 수표를 손에 넘겨줍니다. 그리고는 이를 받아 놀란 사람이 소리치고 춤추고 뛰고 보이는 사람마다 안아주기 시작합니다. “당첨됐어! 나는 부자야! 믿지 못하겠어! 내 문제가 다 해결됐어!”하며 벼락부자가 된 것을 상기시키는 격한 감정 반응을 드러냅니다.

우리는 성경에서 가장 긴 장인 시편 119편에서 다음과 같은 놀라운 고백을 봅니다. “내가 모든 재물을 즐거워함 같이 주의 증거들의 도를 즐거워하였나이다” (14절). 얼마나 절묘한 비교인지요! 우리 삶에 대한 하나님의 명령을 순종하는 것은 마치 큰 재물을 받는 것만큼이나 신나는 일일 수 있습니다! 시편기자는 주님의 명령을 기뻐하는 감사의 표현을 16절에서 후렴으로 반복합니다. “주의 율례들을 즐거워하며 주의 말씀을 잊지 아니하리이다.”

하지만, 만약 우리가 그와 같이 느끼지 않는다면 어떨까요? 삶에 대한 하나님의 명령을 즐거워하는 것이 어떻게 큰 재물을 받는 것처럼 신나는 일이 될 수 있을까요? 이 모든 것은 감사함으로 시작되는데, 감사하는 마음가짐으로 감사하는 길을 선택하는 것입니다. 우리는 가치있다고 여기는 것에 관심을 두기 때문에, 우리의 영혼을 살찌우는 하나님의 선물에 감사를 표현함으로써 시작할 수 있습니다. 우리의 눈을 열어, 하나님의 말씀 속에서 우리에게 주신 지혜와 지식, 그리고 평화의 보물창고를 볼 수 있게 해주시기를 주님께 간구하십시오.

매일 예수님을 사랑하는 마음이 성장해 갈 때 참으로 부유해집니다!

I’m Rich!

Perhaps you’ve seen the TV ad in which a person answers the door and finds someone who hands over a check for an enormous amount of money. Then the amazed recipient begins shouting, dancing, jumping, and hugging everyone in sight. “I won! I’m rich! I can’t believe it! My problems are solved!” Striking it rich evokes a great emotional response.

In Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, we find this remarkable statement: “I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches” (V. 14). What a comparison! Obeying God’s instructions for living can be just as exhilarating as receiving a fortune! Verse 16 repeats this refrain as the psalmist expresses grateful gladness for the Lord’s commands. “I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word.”

But what if we don’t feel that way? How can delighting in God’s instructions for living be just as exhilarating as receiving a fortune? It all begins with gratitude, which is both an attitude and a choice. We pay attention to what we value, so we begin by expressing our gratitude for those gifts of God that nourish our souls. We ask Him to open our eyes to see the storehouse of wisdom, knowledge, and peace He has given us in His Word.

아름다움

십대소녀 두 명을 마음에 그려 보십시오. 첫 번째 소녀는 강하고 튼튼합니다. 다른 소녀는 혼자서 주변을 자유롭게 다녀본 적이 없습니다. 그리고 휠체어에 의지해야하는 일상생활에서 감정적으로 힘들어할 뿐만 아니라 신체적으로도 계속 고통과 어려움에 직면하고 있습니다.

그러나 두 소녀는 서 로 즐겁게 교제하면서 기쁘게 웃습니다. 아름다운 두 십대소녀는 상대방에게서 서로 우정이라는 보물을 보고 있습니다.

예수님은 휠체어에 탄 소녀 같은 사람들과 함께 시간을 많이 보내시고, 그들에게 많은 관심을 보이셨습니다. 평생토록 장애를 지니거나 신체적으로 불편한 사람들뿐만 아니라, 다양한 이유로 사람들로부터 업신여김을 받는 사람들에게 그렇게 하셨습니다. 사실 종교지도자들의 경멸을 받던 “그런 사람들” 중의 한 사람이 예수님께 향유를 부어드렸습니다(누가복음 7:39). 다른 경우에서, 어떤 여인이 비슷한 행동으로 주님께 사랑을 표현했을때, 예수님은 그녀를 비판하는 사람들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “가만두라......그가 내게 좋은 일을 하였느니라”(마가복음 14:6).

하나님은 모든 사람들을 동등하게 평가하십니다. 하나님이 보시기에 다를 바가 없는 것입니다. 사실, 우리는 모두 그리스도의 사랑과 용서를 절대적으로 필요로 합니다. 주님의 사랑은 우리를 위해 자신을 십자가에서 죽게까지 했습니다.

하나님의 형상대로 지음을 받았고 하나님의 사랑을 받을 가치가 있는 다른 모든 사람들을 우리도 예수님의 시선으로 보게 하소서. 우리가 만나는 모든 사람들을 그리스도가 그러신 것처럼 동등하게 대하고, 주님처럼 아름다움을 보는 것을 배우게 해주소서.

Beautiful

Picture two teenage girls. The first girl is strong and healthy. The other girl has never known the freedom of getting around on her own. From her wheelchair she faces not only the emotional challenges common to life, but also a stream of physical pains and struggles.

But both girls are smiling cheerfully as they enjoy each other’s company. Two beautiful teenagers—each seeing in the other the treasure of friendship.

Jesus devoted much of His time and attention to people like the girl in the wheelchair. People with lifelong disabilities or physical deformities as well as those who were looked down on by others for various reasons. In fact, Jesus let one of “those people” anoint Him with oil, to the disdain of the religious leaders (LUKE 7:39). On another occasion, when a woman demonstrated her love with a similar act, Jesus told her critics, “Leave her alone . . . . She has done a beautiful thing to me” (MARK 14:6).

God values everyone equally; there are no distinctions in His eyes. In reality, we are all in desperate need of Christ’s love and forgiveness. His love compelled Him to die on the cross for us.

May we see each person as Jesus did: made in God’s image and worthy of His love. Let’s treat everyone we meet with Christlike equality and learn to see beauty as He does.- DAVE BRANON

붉은 깃털 미끼

몇 년 전에 그리스의 작가 앨리언이 2세기경에 쓴 낚시 미끼에 대한 글을 우연히 보게 되었는데, 거기에 이렇게 기술되어 있었습니다. “보로가와 데살로니가 지역 사이로 아스트라쿠스라는 강이 흐르는데, 거기에 점박이 물고기 [송어]가 살고 있다. 그 물고기를 많이 잡기 위한 덫으로, 낚시 바늘 주위로 선홍색 양털을 단단히 묶고 깃털 두 개를 붙인다. 그러고 나서 그 덫을 던져 넣으면, 물고기들은 그 색깔에 미혹되어 입 안 가득 채울 생각을 하며 몰려든다”(‘동물의 본성’에서).

낚시꾼들은 오늘날도 여전히 붉은 깃털 미끼라고 불리는 이런 미끼를 사용합니다. 2,200년 전에 처음 사용되었던 그것이 아직도 송어를 “더 많이 잡는” 덫으로 쓰이고 있는 것입니다.

그 고전작품을 읽으며, 나는 ‘옛 것이라고 다 시대에 뒤떨어진 것이 아니다. 특히 사람은 더 그렇다.’라고 생각했습니다. 만일 우리가 만족하고 즐거운 노년생활을 통해 하나님의 충만하심과 그 깊이를 다른 사람들에게 보여준다면, 우리는 우리 삶의 마지막 때에 유용한 사람이 될 것입니다. 나이가 들었다고 해서, 몸이 약해지는 것에 마음을 빼앗기거나 과거를 한탄하며 보낼 필요가 없습니다. 노년에 하나님과 함께 성숙해온 사람들의 열매인 평온과 환희, 용기와 온유로 가득해질 수도 있습니다.

“여호와의 집에 심겼음이여......그는 늙어도 여전히 결실하며 진액이 풍족하고 빛이 청청하니”(시편 92:13-14).

The Red Hackle

Several years ago I stumbled across a bit of fishing lore in a second-century bc work by the Greek writer Aelian. “Between Boroca and Thessalonica runs a river called the Astracus, and in it there are fish with spotted skins [trout].” He then describes a “snare for the fish, by which they get the better of them. They fastened crimson red wool round a hook and attached two feathers. Then they would throw their snare, and the fish, attracted by the color, comes up, thinking to get a mouthful” (On the Nature of Animals).

Fishermen still use this lure today. It is called the Red Hackle. First used over 2,200 years ago, it remains a snare for trout by which we “get the better of them.”

When I read that ancient work I thought: Not all old things are passé—especially people. If through contented and cheerful old age we show others the fullness and deepness of God, we’ll be useful to the end of our days. Old age does not have to focus on declining health, pining over what once was. It can also be full of tranquility and mirth and courage and kindness, the fruit of those who have grown old with God.

“Those who are planted in the house of the Lord . . . shall still bear fruit in old age; they shall be fresh and flourishing” (PS. 92:13–14 NKJV). - DAVID ROPER

전송보류

이메일을 보냈는데 엉뚱한 사람에게 보내졌다거나, 그 메일 안에 해롭고 거친 말이 들어있다는 것을 갑자기 알게 된 적이 있습니까? 키보드를 눌러서 보내는 것을 멈출 수만 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요. 자, 이제는 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 몇몇 회사들은 이메일을 보낸 뒤에 짧은 시간을 줘서 이메일이 컴퓨터를 떠나기 전에 멈추게 할 수 있는 기능을 제공해줍니다. 일단 보낸 후에는 이메일은 마치 이미 돌이킬 수 없는 내뱉은 말과 같습니다. 이 “전송보류” 기능은 만병통치의 기능으로 보인다기보다는, 우리가 조심스럽게 말하는 것이 지극히 중요하다는 점을 알려줍니다.

베드로 사도는 그의 첫 번째 서신에서 예수님을 따르는 자들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “악을 악으로, 욕을 욕으로 갚지 말고 도리어 복을 빌라...... 그러므로 생명을 사랑하고 좋은 날 보기를 원하는 자는 혀를 금하여 악한 말을 그치며 그 입술로 거짓을 말하지 말고 악에서 떠나 선을 행하고 화평을 구하며 그것을 따르라”(베드로전서 3:9-11).

시편기자 다윗은 “여호와여 내 입에 파수꾼을 세우시고 내 입술의 문을 지키소서”(시편 141:3)라고 말했습니다. 이는 매일 하루를 시작할 때나, 말로 반격을 하고 싶은 모든 상황에서 아주 중요한 기도입니다.

주님, 오늘 우리의 말을 지켜주셔서 우리가 말로 다른 사람들을 해치지 않게 하소서.

Unsend

Have you ever sent an email and suddenly realized it went to the wrong person or it contained harmful, harsh words? If only you could press a key and stop it. Well, now you can. Several companies offer a feature that gives you a brief time after sending an email to stop it from leaving your computer. After that, the email is like a spoken word that cannot be unsaid. Rather than being seen as a cure-all, an “unsend” feature should remind us that it’s extremely important to guard what we say.

In the apostle Peter’s first letter, he told the followers of Jesus, “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing. . . . For, ‘whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it’” (1 PETER 3:9–11).

The psalmist David wrote, “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips” (PS. 141:3). That’s a great prayer for the beginning of each day and in every situation when we want to strike back with words.
