손 내밀어 만져줄 사람

캐나다에서 지하철로 통근하는 사람들은 긴장된 순간이 가슴 뭉클한 결과로 바뀌는 현장을 목격했습니다. 그들은 한 젊은이가 큰 소리로 막말을 해대어 다른 승객들이 불안해하고 있을 때, 70대의 한 여인이 그에게 부드럽게 다가가 손을 내미는 것을 지켜보았습니다. 그 여인의 친절한 행동으로 그 젊은이는 안정을 되찾고, 눈에 눈물이 그득한 채로 전동차의 바닥에 주저앉았습니다. 그리고 “할머니, 감사합니다.”라고 말한 뒤 일어나 걸어갔습니다. 나중에 그 여인은 자기도 무서웠다고 하면서, 하지만 “난 한 사람의 엄마이고, 그에게는 그를 다독여줄 누군가가 필요했어요.”라고 말했습니다. 그녀는 멀리 떨어져 간섭하지 않는 것이 더 좋겠다고 판단할 수도 있었지만, 위험을 무릅쓰고 사랑을 선택했던 것입니다.

예수님은 그와 같이 긍휼히 여기는 마음을 이해하십니다. 주님은 문둥병이 심해져 절망에 빠진 사람이 고쳐주시기를 애원하며 나타났을 때, 겁먹은 방관자처럼 두려워하며 옆에 비켜 서 계시지 않았습니다. 그리고 문둥병을 마을로 가져왔다고 그 사람을 비난 밖에 할 수 없었던 다른 종교지도자들처럼 무기력하지도 않으셨습니다(레위기 13:45-46). 그 대신 아마도 오랫동안 어느 누구도 만져주지 않았을 그 사람에게 손을 내밀어 그를 고쳐주셨습니다.

감사하게도 예수님은 그 사람과 우리를 위해, 어떤 율법도 제공해주지 못한 것, 곧 주님의 손과 마음으로 우리를 만지시려고 오셨습니다.

Someone to Touch

Commuters on a Canadian Metro train witnessed a heart-moving conclusion to a tense moment. They watched as a 70-year old woman gently reached out and offered her hand to a young man whose loud voice and disturbing words were scaring other passengers. The lady’s kindness calmed the man who sank to the floor of the train with tears in his eyes. He said, “Thanks, Grandma,” stood up, and walked away. The woman later admitted to being afraid. But she said, “I’m a mother and he needed someone to touch.” While better judgment might have given her reason to keep her distance, she took a risk of love.

Jesus understands such compassion. He didn’t side with the fears of unnerved onlookers when a desperate man, full of leprosy, showed up begging to be healed. Neither was He helpless as other religious leaders were—men who could only have condemned the man for bringing his leprosy into the village (Lev. 13:45–46). Instead, Jesus reached out to someone who probably hadn’t been touched by anyone for years, and healed him.

Thankfully, for that man and for us, Jesus came to offer what no law could ever offer—the touch of His hand and heart.

포기하지 말라

50년 넘게 나의 좋은 스승이자 친구인 밥 포스터는 한 번도 나를 포기한 적이 없었습니다. 그의 변함없는 우정과 격려로 나는 가장 어려웠던 시기도 견뎌낼 수 있었습니다.

우리는 종종 도움이 절실한 사람들에게 다가가 그들을 도와주려는 결심을 합니다. 그러나 개선되는 모습이 곧바로 보이지 않으면 우리의 결심은 약해지고 결국은 포기하기도 합니다. 우리가 기대했던 것은 즉각적인 변화였는데 그 변화라는 것이 실제로는 계속 진행되는 하나의 과정이라는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

바울 사도는 우리가 살아가면서 실패와 고초를 겪는 사람들을 도와줄 때 서로 인내할 것을 강조합니다. “너희가 짐을 서로 지라 그리하여 그리스도의 법을 성취하라” (갈라디아서 6:2)라고 말할 때, 그는 우리의 일을 농부가 추수를 하기 위해 들이는 노동과 시간, 그리고 기다림에 비교하고 있는 것입니다.

우리는 사랑하는 사람들을 위해 얼마나 오래 기도하고 얼마나 오래 도와주어야 할까요? “우리가 선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 포기하지 아니하면 때가 이르매 거두리라”(9절). 우리가 몇 번이나 손을 내밀어야 할까요? “우리는 기회 있는 대로 모든 이에게 착한 일을 하되 더욱 믿음의 가정들에게 할지니라”(10절).

주님은 오늘 우리에게 주님을 신뢰하고, 다른 사람들에게 신실하며, 계속 기도하면서 포기하지 말라고 격려하십니다!

Don’t Give Up

Bob Foster, my mentor and friend for more than fifty years, never gave up on me. His unchanging friendship and encouragement, even during my darkest times, helped carry me through.

We often find ourselves determined to reach out and help someone we know who is in great need. But when we fail to see improvement right away, our resolve can weaken and we may eventually give up. We discover that what we hoped would be an immediate change has become an ongoing process.

The apostle Paul urges us to be patient in helping one another through the stumbles and struggles of life. When he writes, “Carry each other’s burdens” and so “fulfill the law of Christ” (Gal. 6:2), he is comparing our task to the work, time, and waiting it takes for a farmer to see a harvest.

How long should we keep praying and reaching out to those we love? “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (v. 9). How many times should we reach out? “As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (v. 10).

The Lord encourages us today to trust Him, to remain faithful to others, to keep on praying, and to not give up!

작은 것들

친구 글로리아가 흥분된 목소리로 전화를 했습니다. 그녀는 의사를 만나러 가는 것 외에는 일체 외출을 할 수가 없었습니다. 그래서 나는 그녀가 “우리 아들이 내 컴퓨터에 스피커를 새로 달아줬어요. 이제 나도 우리교회에서 예배를 드릴 수 있게 됐어요!”라고 말했을 때, 그녀가 왜 그렇게 행복한지 이해할 수 있었습니다. 이제 그녀는 자신이 다니던 교회의 예배를 실시간으로 들을 수 있게 된 것입니다. 그녀는 하나님의 선하심에 대해, 그리고 ‘자기 아들이 줄 수 있었던 최고의 선물’에 대해 흥분하며 열심히 말했습니다.

글로리아는 나에게 감사하는 마음을 갖는 것에 대해 가르쳐줍니다. 그녀는 자신에게 주어진 여러 가지 제약에도 불구하고, 노을이나 도움을 주는 가족과 이웃들, 하나님과의 경건의 시간, 자신의 아파트에서 지낼 수 있는
경제적 능력 등, 아주 작은 것들에 감사합니다. 일생 동안 필요한 것을 채워주시는 하나님을 보았던 그녀는 자기를 방문하거나 자기에게 전화하는 모든 사람들에게 하나님에 대해 이야기합니다.

우리는 시편 116편의 기자가 어떤 고난에 처해 있었는지 모릅니다. 어떤 성경주석은 “사망의 줄이 나를 두르고”(3절)라는 말 때문에 아마도 질병일 거라고 말합니다. 그러나 그는 “어려울” 때에도 은혜로우시고 긍휼이 많으신 주님께 감사했습니다(5-6절).

우리는 어려움에 처해 있을 때 주님을 바라보기가 쉽지 않습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리가 하나님을 바라본다면, 우리는 하나님이 우리 삶에 크고 작은 모든 좋은 선물을 주시는 분이라는 것을 알고 그분께 감사하게 될 것입니다.

The Small Things

My friend Gloria called with excitement in her voice. She had not been able to leave her home except for doctors’ appointments. So I understood why she was so happy to tell me, “My son just attached new speakers to my computer, so now I can go to my church!” Now she could hear the live broadcast of her church’s worship service. She raved about God’s goodness and the “best gift my son could have given me!”

Gloria teaches me about having a thankful heart. Despite her many limitations, she’s thankful for the smallest of things—sunsets, helpful family and neighbors, quiet moments with God, the ability to remain in her own apartment. She’s had a lifetime of seeing God provide for her, and she talks about Him to anyone who visits or calls.

We don’t know what difficulties the author of Psalm 116 was encountering. Some Bible commentaries say it was probably sickness because he said, “the cords of death entangled me” (v. 3). But he gave thanks to the Lord for being gracious and full of compassion when he was “brought low” (vv. 5–6).

When we’re low, it can be hard to look up. Yet if we do, we see that God is the giver of all good gifts in our life—great and small—and we learn to give Him thanks.

작아지는 피아노

내 아들이 3년을 연달아 피아노 연주회에 참가했습니다. 지난해에 나는 연주회에 참석하여 아들이 무대로 올라가 연주하는 것을 지켜보았습니다. 아들은 두 곡을 끝내고 내 옆으로 와서 앉아 이렇게 속삭였습니다. “엄마, 올해는 피아노가 더 작아졌어요.” 내가 말했습니다. “아니야. 작년에 네가 연주한 것과 같은 피아노란다. 네가 더 크게 자란 거지.”

몸이 자라는 것 같이 신앙도 보통 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 천천히 성장합니다. 그것은 예수님을 닮아가는 지속적인 과정이며, 우리가 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화될 때 일어납니다(로마서 12:2).

성령님이 우리 안에서 일하실 때 우리는 우리 삶 가운데 있는 죄를 인식하게 됩니다. 그래서 하나님을 영화롭게 하고 싶은 마음에 우리는 변화되려고 노력합니다. 때로는 변화를 경험하지만 때로는 우리의 노력이 실패로 돌아가기도 합니다. 아무것도 변한 것이 없다는 생각이 들면 우리는 실망하게 됩니다. 우리는 실패를 아무런 진전이 없는 것으로 받아들일지 모르지만, 많은 경우 그것은 우리가 발전하고 있다는 증거입니다.

영적으로 성장하려면 성령님의 도움과 기꺼이 변하고자 하는 마음, 그리고 시간이 필요합니다. 삶의 어떤 지점들에서 뒤돌아보면 우리가 영적으로 성장한 것을 보게 될 것입니다. “[우리] 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을”(빌립보서 1:6) 계속해서 믿을 수 있는 믿음을 하나님께서 우리에게 주시기를 소원합니다.

The Shrinking Piano

For three consecutive years, my son participated in a piano recital. The last year he played, I watched him mount the steps and set up his music. He played two songs and then sat down next to me and whispered, “Mom, this year the piano was smaller.” I said, “No, it’s the same piano you played last year. You’re bigger! You’ve grown.”

Spiritual growth, like physical growth, often happens slowly over time. It is an ongoing process that involves becoming more like Jesus, and it happens as we are transformed through the renewing of our minds (Rom. 12:2).

When the Holy Spirit is at work in us, we may become aware of sin in our lives. Wanting to honor God, we make an effort to change. Sometimes we experience success, but at other times, we try and fail. If it seems like nothing changes, we get discouraged. We may equate failure with a lack of progress, when it’s often proof that we are in the middle of the process.

Spiritual growth involves the Holy Spirit, our willingness to change, and time. At certain points in our lives, we may look back and see that we have grown spiritually. May God give us the faith to continue to believe that “He who began a good work in [us] will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil. 1:6).

늘 경청함

아버지는 말이 없는 분이었습니다. 아버지는 오랜 기간의 군복무로 청력에 손상이 생겨 보청기를 끼고 계셨습니다. 어느 날 오후 아버지가 생각한 것보다 어머니와 내가 좀 더 길게 이야기하자 아버지는 장난스럽게 이렇게 반응하셨습니다. “내가 평화롭고 고요한 것을 원할 때마다 나는 언제나 이렇게 해.” 아버지는 한 동작으로 두 손을 들어 올려 양쪽의 보청기를 끄고는, 양 손을 머리 뒤에 끼고 평온한 미소를 지으면서 눈을 감았습니다.

우리는 웃었습니다. 아버지에게는, 대화는 이미 끝난 것이었습니다!

그날 아버지의 행동은 하나님은 우리와 얼마나 다른 분인가 하는 것을 내게 상기시켜주었습니다. 하나님은 언제나 그분의 자녀들의 말을 듣기 원하십니다. 이 사실은 성경에 나오는 가장 짧은 기도 중의 하나에서도 강조되고 있습니다. 어느 날 페르시아의 아닥사스다왕의 시종 느헤미야가 왕 앞에서 눈에 띠게 슬픈 표정을 짓고 있었습니다. 왕이 그에게 왜 그러는지 이유를 묻자, 느헤미야는 두려워하며 자기 조상들의 성읍이 황폐해져서 그렇다고 고백했습니다. 느헤미야는 이렇게 기록합니다. “왕이 내게 이르시되 그러면 네가 무엇을 원하느냐 하시기로 ‘내가 곧 하늘의 하나님께 묵도하고’ 왕에게 아뢰되......”(느헤미야 2:4-5).

느헤미야의 기도는 짧은 순간 지속되었을 뿐이지만 하나님이 그 기도를 들으셨습니다. 그 기도는 지금껏 느헤미야가 예루살렘을 위해 했던 수많은 기도들에 대해 하나님께서 자비롭게 반응하시도록 이끌어주었습니다. 바로 그 순간 아닥사스다왕은 예루살렘 성읍을 재건해달라는 느헤미야의 요청을 들어주었습니다.

하나님께서 우리의 가장 짧은 기도로부터 가장 긴 기도에 이르기까지 우리의 모든 기도를 들어주실 정도로 우리를 돌보아주신다는 사실을 알게 되니 정말 위로가 되지 않습니까?

Always Listening

Dad was a man of few words. He had hearing damage due to years of military duty and wore hearing aids. One afternoon when Mom and I were talking a little longer than he thought necessary, he responded playfully, “Whenever I want peace and quiet, all I have to do is this.” Lifting both hands in a single motion, he turned off both hearing aids, folded his hands behind his head and closed his eyes in a serene smile.

We laughed. As far as he was concerned, the conversation was over!

My father’s actions that day remind me how different God is from us. He always wants to hear His children. This is underscored by one of the shortest prayers in the Bible. One day Nehemiah, a servant to King Artaxerxes of Persia, was visibly sad in the king’s presence. Fearful when the king asked him why, Nehemiah confessed it was because Jerusalem, the conquered city of his ancestors, lay in ruins. Nehemiah recounts, “The king said to me, ‘What is it you want?’ Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king…” (Neh. 2:4–5, italics added).

Nehemiah’s prayer lasted only a moment, but God heard it. It set in motion God’s merciful response to the many prayers Nehemiah had already offered for Jerusalem. In that moment, Artaxerxes granted Nehemiah’s request to rebuild the city.

Isn’t it comforting to know that God cares enough to listen to all of our prayers—from the shortest to the longest?

베풂의 은사

목사님이 “주님은 그분의 셔츠를 벗어 여러분에게 주실 것입니다.” 라는 말에 활기를 불어넣으면서, “우리가 만일 우리의 외투를 벗어 가난한 이들에게 준다면 어떤 일이 일어날까요?”라고 말하며 교회 회중들에게 마음에 부담을 주는 도전을 했습니다. 그러고는 직접 자신의 외투를 벗어 회중들 앞에 내려놓았습니다. 그러자 다른 수십 명의 사람들이 그를 따라 외투를 벗어 내어놓았습니다. 그 때가 겨울이었기에 그들이 그날 집으로 돌아가는
길이 편안하지는 않았지만, 가난한 수십 명의 사람들에게는 그 겨울이 좀 더 따뜻한 계절로 바뀌었습니다.

세례 요한은 유대 광야를 돌아다니며 그의 말을 듣기 위해 다가오는 군중들에게 “독사의 자식들아......회개에 합당한 열매를 맺으라”(누가복음 3:7-8)라고 엄중하게 경고했습니다. 그들이 놀라 “그러면 우리가 무엇을 하리이까”라고 묻자 그는 이렇게 충고했습니다. “옷 두 벌 있는 자는 옷 없는 자에게 나눠줄 것이요 먹을 것이 있는
자도 그렇게 할 것이니라”(10-11절). 진정한 회개는 너그러운 마음을 갖게 만듭니다.

“하나님은 즐겨 내는 자를 사랑하시”기 때문에 절대로 죄책감이나 압박감을 가지고 베풀어서는 안 됩니다(고린도후서 9:7). 우리가 아낌없이 너그럽게 베풀 때, 우리는 진실로 주는 것이 받는 것보다 더 복이 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.

The Gift of Giving

A pastor breathed life into the phrase “He’d give you the shirt off his back” when he gave this unsettling challenge to his church: “What would happen if we took the coats off our backs and gave them to the needy?” Then he took his own coat and laid it at the front of the church. Dozens of others followed his example. This was during the winter, so the trip home was less comfortable that day. But for dozens of people in need, the season warmed up just a bit.

When John the Baptist roamed the Judean wilderness, he had a stern warning for the crowd that came to hear him. “You brood of vipers!” he said. “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance” (Luke 3:7–8). Startled, they asked him, “What should we do then?” He responded with this advice: “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same” (vv. 10–11). True repentance produces a generous heart.

Because “God loves a person who gives cheerfully” (nlt), giving should never be guilt-based or pressured (2 Cor. 9:7). But when we give freely and generously, we find that it truly is more blessed to give than to receive.

믿고 맡기라

결혼기념일을 맞아 낭만적인 여행을 즐기려고 남편이 2인용 자전거를 빌렸습니다. 우리가 페달을 밟기 시작했을 때, 뒤에 타고 있던 나는 곧 남편의 넓은 어깨에 가려 앞의 길이 잘 안 보인다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 게다가 나의 핸들은 고정되어 있어서 자전거가 나아가는 방향에 전혀 영향을 주지 못했습니다. 단지 앞 핸들만 우리의 방향을 결정했고, 내 것은 상체를 지탱해주는 역할만 할 뿐이었습니다. 나는 내가 통제할 수 없다는 것 때문에 불평하는 쪽을 선택하거나, 아니면 남편이 안전하게 길을 이끌 거라고 믿고 그 여행을 기쁘게 받아들이는 쪽을 선택할 수 있었습니다.

하나님이 아브람에게 그의 고향과 가족을 떠나라고 명하셨을 때, 하나님은 목적지에 대해 많은 정보를 주시지 않았습니다. 정확한 위치도 없었고. 새로운 땅이나 그곳의 천연자원에 대한 설명도 없었습니다. 심지어 그곳에 도착하는 데 시간이 얼마나 걸릴지도 몰랐습니다. 하나님은 단지 그분이 보여주실 땅으로 “가라”는 지시만 내리셨습니다. 대부분의 사람들이 간절하게 알고 싶어
하는 상세한 정보도 없이 하나님의 그 지시에 순종한 것 때문에 아브람은 믿음의 사람으로 인정받게 됩니다(히브리서 11:8).

우리의 삶 속에서 불확실하거나 통제 불가능한 상황에 처하게 될 때, 우리도 아브람의 본을 받아 하나님을 믿고 따르도록 해봅시다. 하나님께서 우리를 더할 나위 없이 잘 인도해주실 것입니다.

Letting Go

For our wedding anniversary, my husband borrowed a tandem bike so we could enjoy a romantic adventure together. As we began to pedal on our way, I quickly realized that as the rider on the back my vision of the road ahead was eclipsed by my husband’s broad shoulders. Also, my handlebars were fixed; they didn’t affect the steering of our bike. Only the front handlebars determined our direction; mine served merely as support for my upper body. I had the choice to either be frustrated by my lack of control or to embrace the journey and trust Mike would guide us safely on our route.

When God asked Abram to leave his homeland and family, He didn’t offer much information concerning the destination. No geographic coordinates. No description of the new land or its natural resources. Not even an indication of how long it would take to get there. God simply gave the instruction to “go” to the land He would show him. Abram’s obedience to God’s instruction, despite lacking the details most humans crave, is credited to him as faith (Heb. 11:8).

If we find ourselves grappling with uncertainty or a lack of control in our lives, let’s seek to adopt Abram’s example of following and trusting God. The Lord will steer us well.

달콤한 향기

작가인 리타 스노우든은 영국의 도버에 있는 작은 마을을 방문했던 이야기를 흥겹게 전해줍니다. 어느 날 오후 카페 밖에 앉아 차를 즐기던 그녀는 아름다운 향기를 느끼게 되었습니다. 리타는 웨이터에게 향기가 어디서 오는지 물었습니다. 그리고 그녀가 보고 있는 지나가는 사람들로부터 나는 것이라는 대답을 들었습니다. 대부분의 마을 사람들이 향수공장에서 일하고 있었는데, 그들이 집으로 돌아가는 길에 옷에 밴 향수 냄새를 거리에 퍼뜨리고 있었던 것입니다.

얼마나 아름다운 그리스도인의 삶의 형상인지요! 바울 사도가 말하는 것처럼 우리는 그리스도의 냄새를 사방에 퍼뜨리는 그분의 향기입니다(고린도후서 2:15). 바울은 여기에서 병사들과 함께 사로잡은 포로들을 끌고 오면서 공중에 승리의 향기를 뿌리며
왕의 위대함을 선언하는, 전쟁에서 돌아오는 왕의 이미지를 사용하고 있습니다(14절).

우리는 그리스도의 향기를 두 가지 방법으로 퍼뜨립니다. 첫째는 말로써 그 아름다운 분에 대해 다른 사람들에게 이야기하는 것이며, 둘째는 우리의 삶을 통해 그리스도와 같은 희생을 실천하는 것입니다 (에베소서 5:1-2). 비록 우리가 나누는 신성한 향기를 모든 사람들이 다 감사히 받지는 않더라도, 그 향기는 많은 사람들에게 생명을 가져다줄 것입니다.

리타 스노우든은 향기를 감지하자 향기의 근원을 찾으려고 노력했습니다. 예수님을 따르는 우리에게도 주님의 향기가 배어들게
하여, 그 향기를 우리의 말과 행동을 통해 거리에 퍼뜨려야 합니다.

Sweet Scent

Author Rita Snowden tells a delightful story about visiting a small village in Dover, England. Sitting outside a café one afternoon enjoying a cup of tea, she became aware of a beautiful scent. Rita asked a waiter where it was coming from, and was told it was the people she could see passing by. Most of the villagers were employed at a nearby perfume factory. As they walked home, they carried the fragrance that permeated their clothes out into the street.

What a beautiful image of the Christian life! As the apostle Paul says, we are the aroma of Christ, spreading His fragrance everywhere (2 Cor. 2:15). Paul uses the image of a king returning from battle, his soldiers and captives in tow, wafting the smell of celebratory incense in the air, declaring the king’s greatness (v. 14).

We spread the aroma of Christ in two ways. First, through our words: telling others about the One who is beautiful. Second, through our lives: doing deeds of Christlike sacrifice (Eph. 5:1–2). While not everyone will appreciate the divine fragrance we share, it will bring life to many.

Rita Snowden caught a scent and was driven to seek its source. As we follow Jesus we too become permeated with His fragrance, and we carry His aroma into the streets through our words and deeds.

광경을 즐겨라

석양. 사람들에게는 석양을 보려고 하던 일을 멈추고는......사진을 찍으며......그 아름다운 광경을 즐기려는 성향이 있습니다.

아내와 나는 최근 멕시코만 위로 떨어지는 해를 바라보았습니다. 우리 주위에 많은 사람들이 있었는데, 대부분 서로 모르는 사람들이었지만 해변에 함께 모여 일몰의 경이로운 자연현상을 지켜보았습니다. 해가 수평선 아래로 완전히 떨어진 순간 사람들은 환호하며 흩어졌습니다.

왜 사람들이 그렇게 반응하는 걸까요? 시편이 하나의 실마리를 제공해줍니다. 시편기자는 하나님이 태양에게 자기를 만드신 창조주를 찬양하라고 명령하셨다고 기록하고 있습니다(시편 148:3). 햇살이 비치는 이 땅의 어디에서든 사람들은 그 햇살과 함께 찬양하고 싶은 감동을 받습니다.

우리에게 다가오는 자연의 아름다움은 세상의 어떤 것도 말해줄 수 없는 것들을 우리 영혼에게 말해줍니다. 또 그것은 우리의 관심을 사로잡아 우리가 하던 일을 멈추게 할 능력이 있을 뿐만 아니라, 바로 그 아름다움을 만드신 분에게 우리의 초점을 돌리게 하는 힘이 있습니다.

하나님의 광대한 창조의 경이로움은 우리로 하여금 잠시 멈추어 진실로 중요한 것이 무엇인지 기억하게 해줍니다. 궁극적으로 그것은 하루가 시작되고 저무는 놀라운 일 뒤에 창조주가 계시다는 것을 일깨워줍니다. 자신이 만드신 이 세상을 너무도 사랑하셨던 그 창조주께서 이 세상을 구원하고 회복시키기 위해 이 세상으로 들어오셨습니다.

Enjoy the View

Sunsets. People tend to stop what they are doing to watch them . . . snap pictures of them . . . enjoy the beautiful view.

My wife and I watched the sun setting over the Gulf of Mexico recently. A crowd of people surrounded us, mostly strangers who had gathered at the beach to watch this nightly phenomenon. At the moment the sun fully slipped below the horizon, the crowd broke out with applause.

Why do people respond like that? The book of Psalms offers a clue. The psalmist wrote of God ordering the sun to praise its Creator (Ps. 148:3). And wherever the rays of the sun shine across the earth, people are moved to praise along with them.

The beauty that comes to us through nature speaks to our souls like few things do. It not only has the capacity to stop us in our tracks and captivate our attention, it also has the power to turn our focus to the Maker of beauty itself.

The wonder of God’s vast creation can cause us to pause and remember what’s truly important. Ultimately, it reminds us that there is a Creator behind the stunning entrance and exit of the day, One who so loved the world He made that He entered it in order to redeem and restore it.

예수님과 함께 하는 집

“집과 같은 곳은 없다.” 이 말은 휴식하고, 거주하며, 소속감을 느끼게 해주는 장소를 갖고 싶어 하는 우리 안의 뿌리 깊은 갈망을 반영해주고 있습니다. 예수님이 제자들과 함께 최후의 만찬을 한 후 주님의 임박한 죽음과 부활에 대해 말씀하실 때, 이 뿌리 깊은 욕구에 대해 언급하셨습니다. 주님은 멀리 가시겠지만 그들을 위해 다시 돌아오실 것을 약속하셨습니다. 주님은 그들을 위해
방을, 머무를 곳인 본향의 집을 준비하실 것이었습니다.

주님이 죄 없이 십자가에서 돌아 가셨을 때 하나님의 율법이 요구하는 바를 충족시키심으로 그들을 위해, 그리고 우리를 위해 거처를 마련해주셨습니다. 주님은 가서 그 집을 만들고 나서, 그들을 위해 다시 와서 그들을 홀로 내버려두지 않으실 거라고 제자들에게 확신시켜주셨습니다. 그들은 이 땅에서든 천국에서든 그들의 삶에 대해 두려워하거나 걱정할 필요가 없었습니다.

우리는 예수님의 말씀으로부터 위로와 확신을 얻을 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 주님이 우리를 위한 집을 마련하시고, 우리 안에 주님의 거처를 만드시고(요한복음 14:23 참조), 천국에 우리를 위한 거처를 마련하시기 위해 앞서 가셨다는 것을 우리가 믿고 신뢰하기 때문입니다. 우리가 이 땅의 어떤 집에 살고 있든, 우리는 예수님께 속해 있어 그분의 사랑이 우리를 지탱하고 그분의 평화가 우리를 둘러싸고 있습니다. 주님과 함께 하는 집과 같은 곳은 어디에도 없습니다.

At Home With Jesus

“There’s no place like home.” The phrase reflects a deeply rooted yearning within us to have a place to rest, be, and belong. Jesus addressed this desire for rootedness when, after He and His friends had their last supper together, He spoke about His impending death and resurrection. He promised that although He would go away, He would come back for them. And He would prepare a room for them. A dwelling-place. A home.

He made this place for them—and us—through fulfilling the requirements of God’s law when He died on the cross as the sinless man. He assured His disciples that if He went to the trouble of creating this home, that of course He would come back for them and not leave them alone. They didn’t need to fear or be worried about their lives, whether on earth or in heaven.

We can take comfort and assurance from Jesus’s words, for we believe and trust that He makes a home for us; that He makes His home within us (see John 14:23); and that He has gone ahead of us to prepare our heavenly home. Whatever sort of physical place we live in, we belong with Jesus, upheld by His love and surrounded in His peace. With Him, there’s no place like home.
