용서해야 하나요?

교회의 행사 준비를 도우려고 교회에 일찍 도착했는데, 한 여인이 교회 본당의 맞은 편 끝에서 울며 서 있었습니다. 그녀는 과거에 내게 못되게 굴었고 나에 대해 나쁘게 말을 하고 다녔던 사람이라, 나는 재빨리 진공청소기를 돌리며 그녀의 흐느낌을 못 본 척 지나치려 했습니다. 나를 좋아하지 않는 사람을 내가 염려할 이유가 없었으니까요.

그런데 성령께서 하나님이 나를 얼마나 많이 용서해주셨는지를 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 그래서 나는 본당을 가로질러 그녀에게로 다가갔습니다. 그녀는 자기 아기가 몇 달째 병원에 입원해 있다고
내게 얘기해주었습니다. 우리는 함께 울고, 껴안고, 그녀의 딸을 위해 기도했습니다. 서로의 차이점을 극복하고 우리는 이제 친한 친구가 되었습니다.

마태복음 18장에서 예수님은 천국을 어떤 임금이 종들과 결산하려 하던 것에 비유하고 있습니다. 엄청난 빚을 지고 있던 종이 왕에게 그것을 탕감해달라고 청원했습니다. 왕이 그 종의 빚을 탕감해준지 얼마 되지 않아, 그 종은 자기가 왕에게 빚진 것보다 그에게 훨씬 적은 빚을 진 사람을 붙잡아 옥에 가두었습니다. 이 말이 왕의 귀에 들어가자, 왕은 용서해주지 않는 마음을 가진 그 악한 종을 감옥에 가두었습니다 (23-34절).

용서한다는 것은 죄를 눈감아주거나, 우리에게 잘못한 것을 봐주거나, 우리가 받은 상처를 축소하는 것이 아닙니다. 용서하게 되면 우리가 자유롭게 되어, 우리가 받을 자격이 없는 하나님의 자비의 선물을 누리게 됩니다. 우리가 하나님을 모심으로써 우리의 삶과 관계에서 평화를 회복하는 은혜의 아름다운 일을 성취할 수 있습니다.

다른 사람을 용서한다는 것은 그분의 완전하심과 선하심을 따라 판단하시는 하나님의 권리를 우리가 신뢰한다는 것을 표시한다.

Should I Forgive?

I arrived early at my church to help set up for an event. A woman stood crying at the opposite end of the sanctuary. She’d been cruel and gossiped about me in the past, so I quickly drowned out her sobs with a vacuum cleaner. Why should I care about someone who didn’t like me?

When the Holy Spirit reminded me how much God had forgiven me, I crossed the room. The woman shared that her baby had been in the hospital for months. We cried, embraced, and prayed for her daughter. After working through our differences, we’re now good friends.

In Matthew 18, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a king who decided to settle his accounts. A servant who owed a staggering amount of money pleaded for mercy. Soon after the king canceled his debt, that servant tracked down and condemned a man who owed him far less than what he’d owed the king. When word got back to the king, the wicked servant was imprisoned because of his own unforgiving spirit (VV. 23–34).

Choosing to forgive doesn’t condone sin, excuse the wrongs done to us, or minimize our hurts. Offering forgiveness simply frees us to enjoy God’s undeserved gift of mercy, as we invite Him to accomplish beautiful works of peace-restoring grace in our lives and our relationships. - XOCHITL DIXON

기억이 하는 사역

상실과 실망의 경험들은 우리를 화나게 하거나 죄책감을 갖게 하고 혼란스럽게 만들기도 합니다. 우리의 선택 때문에 문이 닫혀 다시는 열리지 않게 되건, 우리 잘못이 아닌데도 비극이 우리의 삶을 찾아오건, 결국에는 종종 오스왈드 챔버스가 말한 “‘달리 될 수도 있었던’이라는 헤아릴 수 없는 슬픔”이 찾아옵니다. 우리는 아픈 기억을 잊으려 해보기도 하지만, 그리 할 수 없다는 것을 깨닫습니다.

챔버스는 주님께서 여전히 우리의 삶을 주관하신다는 것을 상기시켜줍니다. 그는 말합니다. “하나님께서 과거를 꺼내실때 결코 두려워하지 마십시오. 기억이 제 길을 찾아가게 놓아두십시오. 그것은 꾸짖음과 훈계와 슬픔으로 일하시는 하나님의 사역입니다. 하나님은 ‘달리 될 수도 있었던’ 것을 미래를 향한 멋진 성장의 기회로 돌려놓으실 것입니다.”

구약 시대에 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 바벨론에 포로로 보내셨을 때, 하나님은 그들에게 타국에서도 하나님을 섬기며 하나님이 그들을 고향으로 돌아오게 할 때까지 믿음 안에서 성장하라고 말씀하셨습니다. “여호와의 말씀이니라 너희를 향한 나의 생각을 내가 아나니 평안이요 재앙이 아니니라 너희에게 미래와 희망을 주는 것이니라”(예레미야 29:11).

하나님은 그들에게 과거의 일들을 무시하거나 그 일에 갇혀 지내지 말고, 하나님께 집중하며 앞을 바라보라고 권고하셨습니다. 주님의 용서는 우리의 슬픈 기억을 주님의 영원한 사랑에 대한 확신으로 바꿔줄 수 있습니다.

The Ministry of Memory

Our experiences of loss and disappointment may leave us feeling angry, guilty, and confused. Whether our choices have closed some doors that will never reopen or, through no fault of our own, tragedy has invaded our lives, the result is often what Oswald Chambers called “the unfathomable sadness of ‘the might have been.’ ” We may try to suppress the painful memory, but discover we can’t.

Chambers reminds us that the Lord is still active in our lives. “Never be afraid when God brings back the past,” he said. “Let memory have its way. It is a minister of God with its rebuke and chastisement and sorrow. God will turn the ‘might have been’ into a wonderful [place of growth] for the future.”

In Old Testament days when God sent the people of Israel into exile in Babylon, He told them to serve Him in that foreign land and grow in faith until He brought them back to their home. “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’ ” (JER. 29:11).

God urged them not to ignore or be trapped by events of the past but instead to focus on Him and look ahead. The Lord’s forgiveness can transform the memory of our sorrow into confidence in His everlasting love. - DAVID MCCASLAND

5분 규칙

나는 한 어머니가 아이들을 위해 세운 5분 규칙에 대한 글을 읽었습니다. 아이들은 학교 갈 준비를 마치고, 매일 집을 떠나기 5분 전에 함께 모여야 했습니다.

아이들이 엄마 주위에 다 모이면, 엄마는 각각 이름을 부르며 그날 주님의 축복을 구하는 기도를 드렸습니다. 그리고 엄마가 키스를 해주면 다들 달려 나갔습니다. 심지어 동네 아이들 까지도 마침 그 집에 들르게 될 때에는 이 기도 모임에 포함되기도 했습니다. 여러 해가 지난 후, 그 아이 중 한명이 이 경험으로 자신의 하루에 기도가 얼마나 중요한지를 배우게 되었다고 말했습니다.

시편 102편 기자는 기도의 중요성을 알았습니다. 이 시편에는 “고난당한 자가 마음이 상하여 그의 근심을 여호와 앞에 토로하는 기도”라는 제목이 붙어있습니다. 그는 “여호와여 내 기도를 들으시고......내가 부르짖는 날에 속히 내게 응답하소서”(1-2절)라고 울부짖습니다. 하나님은 “그의 높은 성소에서 굽어보시며 하늘에서 땅을 살펴보고”(19절) 계십니다.

Five-Minute Rule

I read about a five-minute rule that a mother had for her children. They had to be ready for school and gather together five minutes before it was time to leave each day.

They would gather around Mom, and she would pray for each one by name, asking for the Lord’s blessing on their day. Then she’d give them a kiss and off they’d run. Even neighborhood kids would be included in the prayer circle if they happened to stop by. One of the children said many years later that she learned from this experience how crucial prayer is to her day.

The writer of Psalm 102 knew the importance of prayer. This psalm is labeled, “A prayer of an afflicted person who has grown weak and pours out a lament before the Lord.” He cried out, “Hear my prayer, Lord; . . . when I call, answer me quickly” (VV. 1–2). God looks down “from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he [views] the earth” (V. 19).

God cares for you and wants to hear from you. Whether you follow the five-minute rule asking for blessings on the day, or need to spend more time crying out to Him in deep distress, talk to the Lord each day. Your example may have a big impact on your family or someone close to you. - ANNE CETAS

Alone in Space

Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden knew what it felt like to be on the far side of the moon. For three days back in 1971, he flew alone in his command module, Endeavor, while two crewmates worked thousands of miles below on the surface of the moon. His only companions were the stars overhead that he remembers as being so thick they seemed to wrap him in a sheet of light.

As the sun went down on the Old Testament character Jacob’s first night away from home, he too was profoundly alone, but for a different reason. He was on the run from his older brother—who wanted to kill him for stealing the family blessing normally given to the firstborn son. Yet on falling asleep, Jacob had a dream of a staircase joining heaven and earth. As he watched angels ascending and descending, he heard the voice of God promising to be with him and to bless the whole earth through his children. When Jacob woke he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it” (GEN. 28:16).

Jacob had isolated himself because of his deceit. Yet as real as his failures, and as dark as the night, he was in the presence of the One whose plans are always better and more far-reaching than our own. Heaven is closer than we think, and the “God of Jacob” is with us. - MART DEHAAN

카일리는 동아프리카의 오지로 의료선교를 떠나는 기회를 재빠르게 포착했지만 걱정도 있었습니다. 그녀에게는 의료 경험이 전혀 없었기 때문입니다. 그렇지만 기초적인 간호는 할 수 있었습니다.

선교지에서 그녀는 끔찍해 보이지만 고칠 수 있는 병을 가진 한 여인을 만났습니다. 그 여인의 뒤틀린 다리가 그녀를 역겹게 했지만, 카일리는 무언가를 해야 한다는 것을 알았습니다. 그녀가 다리를 깨끗이 씻고 붕대를 감아주자 환자가 울기 시작했습니다. 카일리는 걱정이 되어 자기가 아프게 했냐고 물었습니다. 그 여인은 “아뇨. 9 년 만에 처음으로 다른 사람이 나를 만져주었어요.”라고 대답했습니다.

나병은 사람들이 그 병을 앓는 환자들을 역겨워하는 병 중의 하나입니다. 고대 유대문화에서는 그 병이 퍼지지 않도록 법으로 “혼자 살아야 한다”고 명시된 엄격한 지침이 있었습니다. “그가 혼자 살되 진영 밖에서 살지니라”(레위기 13:46).

그렇기 때문에 한 나병환자가 예수님께 다가가 “주여 원하시면 저를 깨끗하게 하실 수 있나이다”(마태복음 8:2)라고 말한 것은 아주 놀라운 사건이 아닐 수 없습니다. 그때 “예수께서 손을 내밀어 그에게 대시며 이르시되 내가 원하노니 깨끗함을 받으라”(3절)고 하셨습니다.

외로운 여인의 병든 다리를 만지면서 카일리는 두려움을 모르는, 가교를 잇는 예수님의 사랑을 보여주기 시작했습니다. 한 작은 손길이 변화를 가져다주었습니다.

Just a Touch

Kiley leaped at the chance to go to a remote area of East Africa to assist a medical mission, yet she felt uneasy. She didn’t have any medical experience. Still, she could provide basic care.

While there, she met a woman with a horrible but treatable disease. The woman’s distorted leg repulsed her, but Kiley knew she had to do something. As she cleaned and bandaged the leg, her patient began crying. Concerned, Kiley asked if she was hurting her. “No,” she replied. “It’s the first time anyone has touched me in nine years.”

Leprosy is another disease that can render its victims repulsive to others, and ancient Jewish culture had strict guidelines to prevent its spread: “They must live alone,” the law declared. “They must live outside the camp” (LEV. 13:46).

That’s why it’s so remarkable that a leper approached Jesus to say, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean” (MATT. 8:2). “Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ he said. ‘Be clean!’ ” (V. 3).

In touching a lonely woman’s diseased leg, Kiley began to show the fearless, bridge-building love of Jesus. A single touch made a difference. - TIM GUSTAFSON

하나님께 드리는 질문

주님께서 일과 중에 나타나 메시지를 주시면 어떻게 하겠습니까? 고대 이스라엘사람 기드온에게 이런 일이 일어났습니다. “여호와의 사자가 기드온에게 나타나 이르되 큰 용사여 여호와께서 너와 함께 계시도다.” 기드온은 마른 침을 삼키며 말없이 고개만 끄덕이는 것으로 반응할 수도 있었지만, 그 대신 “여호와께서 우리와 함께 계시면 어찌하여 이 모든 일이 우리에게 미쳤나이까”라고 말했습니다(사사기 6:12-13). 기드온은 왜 하나님께서 자기 백성을 버리신 것처럼 보이는지 알고 싶었던 것입니다.

불렀습니다.

우리가 무엇을 하고 어디로 가든지, 주님을 따르는 자들을 결코 떠나지 않고 버리지 않는다고 약속하신 하나님이 함께 하신다는 사실을 알 때 평온함을 누릴 수 있습니다.

Questions for God

What would you do if the Lord showed up in the middle of your workday with a message? This happened to Gideon, one of the ancient Israelites. “The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!’ ” Gideon could have responded with a wordless nod and gulp, but instead he said, “If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us?” (JUDG. 6:12–13 NLT). Gideon wanted to know why it seemed as if God had abandoned His people.

God didn’t answer that question. After Gideon had endured seven years of enemy attacks, starvation, and hiding in caves, God didn’t explain why He never intervened. God could have revealed
Israel’s past sin as the reason, but instead He gave Gideon hope for the future. God said, “Go with the strength you have . . . . I will be with you. And you will destroy the Midianites” (VV.14, 16 NLT).

Do you ever wonder why God has allowed suffering in your life? Instead of answering that specific question, God may satisfy you with His nearness today and remind you that you can rely on His strength when you feel weak. When Gideon finally believed that God was with him and would help him, he built an altar and called it “The Lord Is Peace” (V. 24).

There is peace in knowing that whatever we do and wherever we go, we go with God who promised never to leave or forsake His followers. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

영원히 사랑받음

우리가 어떤 식으로든 냉대 받거나 무시당하거나 업신여김을 받는 일 없이 하루를 보낼 때는 거의 없습니다. 때로는 우리가 우리 자신에게 그렇게 하기까지도 합니다.

다윗의 적들은 다윗을 욕되게 하고 괴롭히고 협박하고 모욕하였습니다. 다윗의 자존감과 평온한 마음은 곤두박질쳤습니다 (시편 4:1-2). 그는 “곤란으로부터” 벗어나게 해달라고 기도했습니다.

그때 다윗은 기억했습니다. “여호와께서 자기를 위하여 경건한 자를 택하신 줄 너희가 알지어다”(3절). 여러 영어 번역본들은 다윗의 대담한 진술의 본질을 완전히 담아내기 위해 “신실한 종”을 “경건한 자”로 번역했습니다.

여기에 쓰인 히브리어 헤세드(hesed)는 문자적으로는 하나님이 약속하신 사랑을 의미하지만, “하나님이 영원히 사랑하시는 자들”로 보는 것도 타당합니다.

여기에 우리도 반드시 기억해야 할 것이 있습니다. 그것은 우리가 특별히 구별되어, 하나님의 독생자처럼 우리도 하나님께 영원히 사랑 받는다는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 영원히 하나님의 자녀가 되도록 우리를 불러주셨습니다.

우리는 낙담하는 대신, 우리 하나님 아버지로부터 대가없이 받는 그 사랑을 상기해야 합니다. 우리는 하나님이 지극히 사랑하시는 자녀입니다. 그 마지막은 절망이 아니라 평안과 기쁨입니다(7-8절). 하나님은 절대로 우리를 포기하시지 않고, 우리를 사랑하는 것을 결코 그만두시지 않습니다.

Forever Loved

It’s almost impossible for us to get through a day without being snubbed, ignored, or put down in some way. Sometimes we even do it to ourselves.

David’s enemies were talking smack—bullying, threatening, pummeling him with insults. His sense of self-worth and well-being had plummeted (Ps. 4:1–2). He asked for relief “from my distress.”

Then David remembered, “Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself” (v. 3). Various English versions try to capture the full essence of David’s bold statement by translating “faithful servant” as “godly.” The Hebrew word here, hesed, literally refers to God’s covenant love and might well be rendered “those whom God will love forever and ever and ever.”

Here’s what we too must remember: We are loved forever, set apart in a special way, as dear to God as His own Son. He has called us to be His children for all eternity.

Instead of despairing, we can remind ourselves of the love we freely receive from our Father. We are His dearly beloved children. The end is not despair but peace and joy (vv. 7–8). He never gives up on us, and He never ever stops loving us.

아침이 올 때

매우 늦은 시간이라 우리는 뮌헨 변두리의 시골 여인숙에서 하룻밤을 묵어가려고 멈췄습니다. 숨 막힐 듯한 안개 때문에 어둠속으로 아무것도 볼 수 없었지만, 우리는 아늑한 방에 발코니가 딸려 있는 것을 보고는 기뻐했습니다. 몇 시간 후에 해가 뜨자 안개가 사라지기 시작하면서 우리는 전날 밤에 으스스하게 가려져 있었던 완벽한 목가적인 광경을 볼 수 있었습니다. 평화롭게 우거진 푸른 초원과, 목에 걸린 작은 방울을 딸랑거리며 풀을 뜯고
있는 양들, 그리고 하늘에는 한 무리의 양 같이 보이는 커다란 흰 구름이 떠있었습니다. 커다란 솜털이 복슬복슬한 양떼였지요!

때로는 절망이라는 무거운 안개가 우리의 인생을 뒤덮을 수 있습니다. 우리의 상황이 너무 암울하게 보여 희망을 잃기 시작할 수 있습니다. 그러나 태양이 안개를 다 태워버리듯이 하나님을 믿는 우리의 믿음도 의심의 안개를 다 태워버릴 수 있습니다. 히브리서 11 장은 믿음은 “바라는 것들의 실상이요 보이지 않는 것들의 증거”
(1절)라고 정의하고 있습니다. 이 구절은 “보이지 않는 일에 경고하심을 받았지만” 하나님께 순종한 노아의 믿음과(7절), 어디로 가야할지 몰랐지만 하나님이 이끄시는 대로 갔던 아브라함을(8절) 우리에게 상기시켜줍니다.

우리가 하나님을 보지 못했고 하나님이 함께 하심을 늘 느끼지 못하더라도, 하나님은 항상 우리와 함께 하시며 우리가 어두운 밤들을 지날 때 도와주십니다.

When Morning Comes

It was very late when we stopped for the night at a country inn outside of Munich. We were delighted to see that our cozy room had a balcony, although an oppressive fog made it impossible to see into the darkness. But when the sun rose a few hours later, the haze began to fade. Then we could see what had been grimly shrouded the night before—a completely idyllic scene—peaceful and lush green meadow, sheep grazing with tiny tinkling bells about their necks, and big white clouds in the sky that looked exactly like more sheep—huge, fluffy sheep!

Sometimes life can get clouded over by a heavy fog of despair. Our situation may look so dark that we begin to lose hope. But just as the sun burns away a fog, our faith in God can burn away the haze of doubt. Hebrews 11 defines faith as “confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (v. 1). The passage goes on to remind us of the faith of Noah, who was “warned about things not yet seen,” yet obeyed God (v. 7). And Abraham who went where God directed—even though he didn’t know where that would be (v. 8).

Though we have not seen Him and cannot always feel His presence, God is always present and will help us through our darkest nights.

분노의 대안

호주의 퍼스에서 어느 날 아침, 피온 멀홀랜드는 그의 자동차가 없어진 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그 순간 그는 실수로 주차금지 지역에 주차하여 차가 견인되었다는 것을 알았습니다. 견인료와 주차벌금 600불을 생각하자 화가 났지만, 그는 차를 되돌려 받는 일을 담당하는 사람에게 화를 내지 않겠다고 결심했습니다. 그는 감정을 표출하는 대신에 그 상황에 대해 재미있는 시를 써서 견인장에서 만난 직원 에게 읽어주었습니다. 그 직원은 그 시를
좋아했고, 일어날 법한 불쾌한 충돌은 전혀 일어나지 않았습니다.

잠언서는 우리에게 “다툼을 멀리 하는 것이 사람에게 영광”(20:3)이라고 가르칩니다. 다툼은 어떤 사안에 대해
의견이 맞지 않는 사람들 사이에서 속에서 부글부글 끓거나 밖으로 폭발하는 불화입니다.

하나님은 다른 사람들과 평화롭게 살 수 있도록 여러 가지 자원을 마련해주셨습니다. ‘성경 말씀’은 화가 나도 그것을 터트리지 않게 할 수 있다고 확신시켜주고 있으며(에베소서 4:26), ‘성령님’은 우리를 화나게 만드는 사람들에게 공격하려고 어떤 말이나 행동을 하도록 부추기는 분노의 불꽃을 잠재울 수 있게 해주십니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리에게 화가 날 때 따를 수 있는 ‘주님의 본’을 보여주셨습니다(베드로전서 2:23). 하나님은 긍휼히 여기시며 은혜를 베푸시며 노하기를 더디 하시며 인자와 진실이 풍성한 분이십니다(시편 86:15).

An Alternative to Anger

One morning in Perth, Australia, Fionn Mulholland discovered his car was missing. That’s when he realized he had mistakenly parked in a restricted zone and his car had been towed away. After considering the situation—even the $600 towing and parking fine—Mulholland was frustrated, but he decided not to be angry with the person he would work with to retrieve his car. Instead of venting his feelings, Mulholland wrote a humorous poem about the situation and read it to the worker he met at the tow yard. The worker liked the poem, and a possible ugly confrontation never took place.

The book of Proverbs teaches, “It is to one’s honor to avoid strife” (20:3). Strife is that friction that either simmers under the surface or explodes in the open between people who disagree about something.

God has given us the resources to live peacefully with other people. His Word assures us that it’s possible to feel anger without letting it boil over into rage (Eph. 4:26). His Spirit enables us to override the sparks of fury that prompt us to do and say things to strike out at people who upset us. And God has given us His example to follow when we feel provoked (1 Peter 2:23). He is compassionate, gracious, and slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness (Ps. 86:15).

언어 배우기

한 작은 자메이카 교회의 교인들 앞에 서서 내가 할 수 있는 최상의 지방 사투리로 “와 구안, 자메이카?”라고 했을 때, 그들은 내가 예상했던 것보다 더 좋은 반응을 보이며 미소와 박수로 나를 맞아주었습니다.

실제로 내가 한 말이라고는 파트와 지방어로 “어떻게 지내세요?” 라고 하는 보통의 인사말에 지나지 않았지만,
그들의 귀에는 “제가 여러분에게 관심이 아주 많아 언어도 배웁니다.”라고 말하는 것처럼 들렸던 것입니다. 물론 파트와 지방어로 더 이상 아는 말은 없었지만, 이미 그들의 마음의 문이 열렸습니다.

바울 사도는 아테네 사람들 앞에 섰을 때 자신이 그들의 문화를 안다고 알려 주었습니다. 그는 “알지 못하는 신”이라 새긴 제단을 보았다고 말하면서 아테네 시인 중의 한 사람의 시를 인용했습니다. 물론 모든 사람이 예수님의 부활에 대한 바울의 메시지를 믿지는 않았지만, 어떤 이들은 “이 일에 대하여 네 말을 다시 듣겠다”(사도행전 17:32)라고 말했습니다.

성경은 우리에게 예수님과 예수님이 주시는 구원에 대해 다른 사람들과 이야기를 나눌 때 복음을 전하는 문을 여는 수단으로 다른 사람들을 위해, 이를테면 그들의 언어를 배우는 것과 같은 일에 우리 자신을 투자하라고 가르쳐줍니다(고린도전서 9:20-23 참조).

우리가 다른 사람들의 삶속에 있는 “와 구안?”을 찾아낼 때, 하나님이 우리 삶에 행하신 일들을 함께 나누기가 더 쉬워질 것입니다.

Learning the Language

I stood before the gathering at a small Jamaican church and said in my best local dialect, “Wah Gwan, Jamaica?” The reaction was better than I expected, as smiles and applause greeted me.

In reality, all I had said was the standard greeting, “What’s going on?” in Patois [pa-twa], but to their ears I was saying, “I care enough to speak your language.” Of course I did not yet know enough Patois to continue, but a door had been opened.

When the apostle Paul stood before the people of Athens, he let them know that he knew their culture. He told them that he had noticed their altar to “an unknown god,” and he quoted one of their poets. Of course, not everyone believed Paul’s message about Jesus’s resurrection, but some said, “We want to hear you again on this subject” (Acts 17:32).

As we interact with others about Jesus and the salvation He offers, the lessons of Scripture show us to invest ourselves in others—to learn their language, as it were—as a way to open the door to telling them the good news (see also 1 Cor. 9:20–23).

As we find out “Wah Gwan?” in others’ lives, it will be easier to share what God has done in ours.
