항상 주님의 보호 아래

막내딸이 항공편으로 뮌헨에서 바르셀로나로 가는 날, 나는 딸의 비행경로를 따라가 보려고 내가 좋아하는 비행추적 사이트에 들어가 보았습니다. 딸의 항공편 번호를 입력하니 컴퓨터 스크린에 딸이 타고 있는 비행기가 오스트리아를 가로질러 이탈리아 북부를 돌아가고 있는 것이 보였습니다. 그곳에서 비행기는 프랑스 리비에라 남쪽을 지나 스페인을 향하여 지중해 위를 날아 제 시간에 도착하는 것으로 되어 있었습니다. 아마도 내가 모르는 유일한 정보라고는 승무원이 점심 기내식으로 어떤 음식을 제공하고 있는가 하는 것뿐이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

내가 무엇 때문에 딸의 위치와 상황에 대해 관심을 가졌을까요? 딸을 사랑하기 때문입니다. 나는 내 딸이 어떤 사람이며, 무엇을 하고 있고, 어떻게 살아가는지에 대해 관심을 갖고 있습니다.

시편 32편에서 다윗은 놀라운 하나님의 용서와 인도하심, 그리고 우리를 향한 관심을 찬양하였습니다. 육신의 아버지와는 달리, 하나님은 우리 삶의 모든 세밀한 부분을 아시고 우리 마음의 가장 깊은 필요를 아십니다. 주님은 우리에게 이렇게 약속하십니다. “내가 네 갈 길을 가르쳐 보이고 너를 주목하여 훈계하리로다”(8절).

“여호와를 신뢰하는 자에게는 인자하심이 두르리로다”(10절)라고 하셨기 때문에, 오늘 우리의 환경이 어떻더라도 하나님이 우리와 함께 하시고 돌보신다는 것을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

Always In His Care

On the day our youngest daughter was flying from Munich to Barcelona, I visited my favorite flight tracking website to follow her progress. After I entered her flight number, my computer screen showed that her flight had crossed Austria and was skirting the northern part of Italy. From there the plane would fly over the Mediterranean, south of the French Riviera toward Spain, and was scheduled to arrive on time. It seemed that the only thing I didn’t know was what the flight attendants were serving for lunch!

Why did I care about my daughter’s location and circumstances? Because I love her. I care about who she is, what she’s doing, and where she’s going in life.

In Psalm 32, David celebrated the marvel of God’s forgiveness, guidance, and concern for us. Unlike a human father, God knows every detail of our lives and the deepest needs of our hearts. The Lord’s promise to us is, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (V. 8).

Whatever our circumstances today, we can rely on God’s presence and care because “the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him” (V. 10). - DAVID MCCASLAND

말하는 나무

“십자가의 꿈”은 영문학 사상 가장 오래된 기독교 시 중의 하나입니다. ‘십자가’는 고대 영어단어 ‘막대기’ 또는 ‘기둥’이라는 단어로부터 유래되었는데, 예수님께서 못 박혀 돌아가신 십자가를 의미합니다. 이 고대 시에서는 십자가에 못 박힌 사건을 십자가의 관점에서 다시 이야기하고 있습니다. 나무는 자신이 하나님의 아들을 죽이는 데 사용될 것을 알고는 그렇게 사용되는 것을 거부합니다. 그러나 예수님은 믿는 자들에게 구원을 베푸시기 위해 그 나무에 도움을 요청 하십니다.

에덴동산의 한 나무는 우리의 영적인 조상들이 맛보아 죄가 인간에게 들어오도록 한 금지된 열매의 근원이었습니다. 그리고 하나님의 아들 예수님이 모든 인간의 죄를 대신한 숭고한 희생을 드리기 위해 피를 쏟으셨을 때 우리를 대신하여 나무에 못 박히셨습니다. 그리스도께서 “우리 죄를 자기의 몸에 몸소 지시고서, 나무에 달리셨습니다”(베드로전서 2:24, 새번역).

십자가는 구원을 위해 예수님을 신뢰하는 모든 이들에게는 인생의 전환점입니다. 그리고 십자가 사건 이후로, 십자가는 죄와 사망에서 우리를 건지신 예수님의 희생적인 죽음을 나타내는 상징이 되었습니다. 십자가는 우리를 향하신 말로 표현 못 할 놀라운 하나님의 사랑의 증거입니다.

The Talking Tree

One of the earliest Christian poems in English literature is “The Dream of the Rood.” The word rood comes from the Old English word rod or pole and refers to the cross on which Christ was crucified. In this ancient poem the crucifixion story is retold from the perspective of the cross. When the tree learns that it is to be used to kill the Son of God, it rejects the idea of being used in this way. But Christ enlists the help of the tree to provide redemption for all who will believe.

In the garden of Eden, a tree was the source of the forbidden fruit that our spiritual parents tasted, causing sin to enter the human race. And when the Son of God shed His blood as the ultimate sacrifice for all of humanity’s sin, He was nailed to a tree on our behalf. Christ “bore our sins in his body on the cross” (1 Peter 2:24).

The cross is the turning point for all who trust Christ for salvation. And ever since the crucifixion, it has become a remarkable symbol that represents the sacrificial death of the Son of God for our deliverance from sin and death. The cross is the inexpressibly wonderful evidence of God’s love for us. - DENNIS FISHER

다시 세우기

에드워드 클리가 오랫동안 다른 곳에 있다가 베를린으로 다시 돌아왔을 때, 그가 기억하고 사랑했던 베를린은 그 자리에 없었습니다. 도시는 엄청나게 변해 있었고, 클리 또한 변했습니다. 클리는 ‘헤미스피어스’ 잡지의 기사에서 “예전에 사랑했던 도시로 돌아가는 것은 운에 맡기는 계획과 비슷하다......당신에게 실망을 안겨줄 수 있다.”고 이야기합니다. 추억의 장소로 돌아갈 때 우리는 슬픔과 상실감을 느낄지도 모릅니다. 우리는 옛날의 우리가 아니고, 우리에게 큰 의미가 있던 장소도 또한 그곳에 없습니다.

느헤미야가 자신의 백성들이 절망 적인 환난 속에 빠져있고 예루살렘이 황폐해졌다는 소식을 들었을 때는 그가 예루살렘을 떠나 오랜 유배생활 중에 있을 때였습니다. 느헤미야는 바사왕 아닥사스다의 허락을 받아 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하기 위해 돌아왔습니다. 상황을 살피기 위해 밤에 정찰을 마친 후(느헤미야 2:13-
15), 느헤미야는 예루살렘 거민들에게 말했습니다. “우리가 당한 곤경은 너희도 보고 있는 바라 예루살렘이 황폐하고 성문이 불탔으니 자, 예루살렘 성을 건축하여 다시 수치를 당하지 말자”(17절).

느헤미야는 추억하기 위해서가 아니라 다시 세우기 위해 돌아왔습니다. 복구가 필요한 우리 과거의 손상된 부분들을 생각해볼 때 이것은 우리에게 강력한 교훈을 줍니다. 우리로 앞을 내다보고 전진하며 다시 세울 수 있게 해주는 것은 그리스도를 믿는 믿음과 주님의 능력입니다.

Rebuilding

When Edward Klee returned to Berlin after being away for many years, the city he remembered and loved was no longer there. It had changed dramatically, and so had he. Writing in Hemispheres magazine, Klee said, “Returning to a city you once loved tends to be a hit-or-miss proposition . . . . It can be a letdown.” Going back to the places of our past may produce a feeling of sorrow and loss. We are not the same person we were then, nor is the place that was so significant in our lives exactly as it was.

Nehemiah had been in exile from the land of Israel for many years when he learned of the desperate plight of his people and the devastation in the city of Jerusalem. He received permission from Artaxerxes, the Persian king, to return and rebuild the walls. After a night reconnaissance to examine the situation (Neh. 2:13–15), Nehemiah told the inhabitants of the city, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace” (v. 17).

Nehemiah did not return to reminisce but to rebuild. It’s a powerful lesson for us as we consider the damaged parts of our past that need repair. It is our faith in Christ and His power that enables us to look ahead, move forward, and rebuild. - DAVID MCCASLAND

Timeless Savior

Jeralean Talley died in June 2015 as the world’s oldest living person—116 years of age. In 1995, the city of Jerusalem celebrated its 3,000th birthday. One hundred sixteen is old for a person, and 3,000 is old for a city, but there are trees that grow even older. A bristlecone pine in California’s White Mountains has been determined to be older than 4,800 years. That precedes the patriarch Abraham by 800 years!

Jesus, when challenged by the Jewish religious leaders about His identity, also claimed to pre-date Abraham. “Very truly I tell you,” He said, “before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58). His bold assertion shocked those who were confronting Him, and they sought to stone Him. They knew He wasn’t referring to a chronological age but was actually claiming to be eternal by taking the ancient name of God, “I am” (see Ex. 3:14). But as a member of the Trinity, He could make that claim legitimately.

In John 17:3, Jesus prayed, “This is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” The timeless One entered into time so we could live forever. He accomplished that mission by dying in our place and rising again. Because of His sacrifice, we anticipate a future not bound by time, where we will spend eternity with Him. 항상 사랑받고 귀히 여김

‘우리는 우리의 일보다 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님을 섬깁니다.’

아, 가족을 부양하고 하나님이 만드신 이 세상을 책임 있게 관리하기 위해 우리가 일하기를 하나님이 원하신다는 것은 사실입니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리가 아직도 성령님의 이끄심에 반응하지 않는 사람들을 주의하며 지켜보고 있을 때조차도, 우리 주변의 연약하고 굶주리고 헐벗고 목마르고 상처받은 사람들을 섬기기를 바라십니다.

‘그럼에도 우리는 우리의 일보다 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님을 섬깁니다.’

우리의 건강 문제나 사업의 실패, 예측치 못한 재난으로 “하나님을 위해 무엇을 할” 능력이 우리에게서 떨어져나갈 때가 올 수 있기 때문에 우리는 이것을 결코 잊어서는 안 됩니다. 바로 그럴 때 하나님은 우리가 하나님을 위해 일하기 때문에 우리를 사랑하시는 것이 아니라 우리가 하나님의 자녀이기 때문에 사랑하신다는 을 기억하기를 원하십니다. 우리가 우리의 구원을 위해 그리스도의 이름을 의지하기만 하면, “환난이나 곤고나 박해나 기근이나 적신이나 위험이나 칼” 같은 그 아무 것도 우리를 “우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서” 끊을 수가 없습니다(로마서 8:35,39).

우리가 할 수 있는 일이나 가진 것이 모두 없어질 때, 하나님이 우리에게 단지 원하시는 것은 하나님 안에서 그분의 자녀로서 평안히 쉬는 것입니다.

Always Loved, Always Valued

We serve a God who loves us more than our work.

Oh, it’s true that God wants us to work to feed our families and to responsibly take care of the world He created. And He expects us to serve the weak, hungry, naked, thirsty, and broken people around us even as we remain alert to those who have not yet responded to the Holy Spirit's tug on their lives.

And yet we serve a God who loves us more than our work.

We must never forget this because there may come a time when our ability to “do for God” is torn from us by health or failure or unforeseen catastrophe. It is in those hours that God wants us to remember that He loves us not for what we do for Him but because of who we are: His children! Once we call on the name of Christ for salvation, nothing—“trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword”—will ever again separate us “from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:35, 39).

When all we can do or all we have is taken from us, then all He wants us to do is rest in our identity in Him. - RANDY KILGORE

무명의 영웅들

성경의 어떤 이야기들은 우리로 잠시 멈추어 생각하게 합니다. 예를 들면 모세가 하나님의 백성을 약속의 땅으로 인도할 때 아멜렉 족속이 공격하였는데, 어떻게 그가 산꼭대기로 올라가 하나님의 지팡이를 붙잡을 것을 알았을까요?(출애굽기 17:8-15). 성경이 그것에 대해 말해주지는 않지만, 그가 손을 들었을 때는 이스라엘이 이기고 손을 내렸을 때는 아멜렉이 승리한 것은 압니다. 모세가 피곤해졌을 때 그의 형 아론과 다른 사람 훌이 모세의 팔을 들어 올려 이스라엘이 이기도록 했습니다.

훌에 대해 알려진 바는 별로 없지만, 그는 이스라엘 역사의 그 시점에서 매우 중요한 역할을 감당했습니다. 이 사실은 보이지 않는 영웅들이 중요하다는 것과, 지도자들을 돕거나 용기를 주는 사람들이 중요한 역할을 하지만 그것이 종종 간과된다는 것을 우리에게 보여줍니다. 지도자들은 흔히 역사책에 언급되거나 소셜 미디어에서 찬미를 받지만, 하나님은 다른 방법으로 조용하고 신실하게 섬기는 사람들의 모습도 빠뜨리지 않고 보고 계십니다. 주님은 가족과 친구를 위해 매일 중보기도 하는 사람을 보고 계시고, 주일마다 교회에서 의자를 치우는 자매를 보고 계십니다. 또한 주님은 찾아가 격려의 말을 전하는 이웃도 보고 계십니다.

Unseen Heroes

Stories in the Bible can make us stop and wonder. For instance, when Moses led God’s people into the Promised Land and the Amalekites attacked, how did he know to go to the top of the hill and hold up God’s staff? (Ex. 17:8–15). We aren’t told, but we learn that when Moses raised his hands, the Israelites would win the battle, and when he lowered them, the Amalekites would win. When Moses got tired, his brother Aaron and another man, Hur, held up Moses’s arms so the Israelites could triumph.

We aren’t told much about Hur, but he played a crucial role at this point in Israel’s history. This reminds us that unseen heroes matter, that supporters and those who encourage leaders play a key and often overlooked role. Leaders may be the ones mentioned in the history books or lauded on social media, but the quiet, faithful witness of those who serve in other ways is not overlooked by the Lord. He sees the person who intercedes daily in prayer for friends and family. He sees the woman who puts away the chairs each Sunday in church. He sees the neighbor who reaches out with a word of encouragement.

God is using us, even if our task feels insignificant. And may we notice and thank any unseen heroes who help us. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

너무나 인간적인

영국 작가 에블린 워는 자신의 성격적인 결함이 두드러지도록 글을 썼습니다. 나중에 그 소설가는 기독교로 개종하였지만, 그 이후에도 여전히 방황했습니다. 어느 날 한 여자가 이렇게 물었습니다. “워씨, 어떻게 그렇게 행동하면서 자신을 그리스도인이라고 할 수 있어요?” 그러자 그는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “부인, 말씀하시는 대로 제가 나쁜 사람일지 모르지만, 제게 종교가 없다면 저는 아마 사람도 아닐 겁니다.”

All Too Human

British writer Evelyn Waugh wielded his words in a way that accentuated his character flaws. Eventually the novelist converted to Christianity, yet he still struggled. One day a woman asked him, “Mr. Waugh, how can you behave as you do and still call yourself a Christian?” He replied, “Madam, I may be as bad as you say. But believe me, were it not for my religion, I would scarcely be a human being.”

Waugh was waging the internal battle the apostle Paul describes: “I want to do what is right, but I can’t” (Rom. 7:18 nlt). He also says, “The trouble is not with the law . . . [It] is with me, for I am all too human” (v. 14 nlt). He further explains, “In my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me . . . . Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?” (vv. 22–24). And then the exultant answer: “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (v. 25).

When we come in faith to Christ, admitting our wrongdoing and need of a Savior, we immediately become a new creation. But our spiritual formation remains a lifelong journey. As John the disciple observed: “Now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. 천둥과 번개

오래 전 친구와 몇 군데 비버 서식지 호수를 돌아다니며 낚시를 하고 있었습니다. 그런데 비가 오기 시작하여 가까운 작은 사시나무숲에 들어가 비를 피했지만 비는 그치지 않고 계속 내렸습니다. 그래서 우리는 낚시를 그만하기로 하고 트럭으로 뛰어갔습니다. 내가 트럭 문을 열자마자 번개가 그 사시나무 숲을 쳐서 우레와 같은 불덩이가 나뭇잎들과 껍질들을 쳐내고 몇 가지들을 새까맣게 태웠습니다. 그리고는 고요해졌습니다.

우리는 놀랐고 또 두려웠습니다. 우리 아이다호 계곡에는 번개가 번쩍이고 천둥이 치고는 합니다. 아슬 아슬하게 피했던 그 일이 있었음에도 나는 천둥 번개를 사랑합니다. 자연 그대로의 그 힘을 사랑합니다. 강도 높은 전압! 충격! 놀라움과 두려움! 이 땅과 그 안에 있는 모든 것들이 흔들리고 벌벌 떱니다. 그리고는 평화가 옵니다.

나는 천둥과 번개가 본질적으로 엄청나고 불가항력적인 능력으로 말씀하시는 하나님의 음성을 상징하기에 그들을 좋아합니다(욥기 37:4). “여호와의 소리가 화염을 가르시도다......여호와께서 자기 백성에게 힘을 주심이여 여호와께서 자기 백성에게 평강의 복을 주시리로다”(시편 29:7,11). 주님은 우리가 견뎌내고 인내하고 친절하고, 조용히 앉아있거나 일어나 가게 하시고, 또는 아무것도 하지 않게 할 힘을 주십니다.

Thunder and Lightning

Many years ago a friend and I were fishing a series of beaver ponds when it started to rain. We took cover under a nearby grove of quaking aspen, but the rain continued to fall. So we decided to call it a day and run for the truck. I had just opened the door when lightning struck the aspen grove with a thunderous fireball that stripped leaves and bark off the trees, leaving a few limbs smoldering. And then there was silence.

We were shaken and awed.

Lightning flashes and thunder rolls across our Idaho valley. I love it—despite my close call. I love the raw power. Voltage! Percussion! Shock and awe! The earth and everything in it trembles and shakes. And then there is peace.

I love lightning and thunder primarily because they are symbols of God's voice (Job 37:4), speaking with stupendous, irresistible power through His Word. “The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning . . . The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace” (Ps. 29:7, 11). He gives strength to endure, to be patient, to be kind, to sit quietly, to get up and go, to do nothing at all.

헛되지 않음

내가 아는 어떤 재정전문가는 현실적인 투자방법에 대해 이렇게 말합니다. “최선을 기대하되 최악에 대비하십시오.” 우리가 일상에서 내리는 거의 모든 결정은 어떤 결과를 초래할지 알 수 없습니다. 그러나 어떤 일이 일어나더라도 우리가 따를 수 있는 길이 하나 있는데, 종국에 그 수고가 헛되지 않을 것을 우리는 압니다.

바울 사도는 도덕적 타락의 도시로 알려진 고린도에서 예수님을 따르는 사람들과 일 년을 같이 지냈습니다. 그는 그곳을 떠난 후 그들에게 보낸 편지에서 실망하지도 말고 또 그들이 그리스도를 위해 증거한 것들이 아무 소용이 없다고 생각해서도 안 된다고 강조했습니다. 그는 주님이 다시 오셔서 승리 가운데 사망이
삼킨바 될 날이 올 것이라고 그들에게 확신시켜주었습니다(고린도전서 15:52-55).

예수님께 변함없이 충성하는 것이 힘들고 낙심되고 위험할 수도 있겠지만 결코 무의미하거나 헛되지 않습니다. 우리가 주님과 동행하며 주님의 살아계심과 전능하심을 증언할 때, 우리의 삶은 절대 헛되지 않습니다! 우리는 그것을 확신할 수 있습니다.

Not In Vain

A financial advisor I know describes the reality of investing money by saying, “Hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.” With almost every decision we make in life there is uncertainty about the outcome. Yet there is one course we can follow where no matter what happens, we know that in the end it will not be a wasted effort.

The apostle Paul spent a year with the followers of Jesus in Corinth, a city known for its moral corruption. After he left, he urged them in a follow-up letter not to be discouraged or feel that their witness for Christ was of no value. He assured them that a day is coming when the Lord will return and even death will be swallowed up in victory (1 Cor. 15:52–55).

Remaining true to Jesus may be difficult, discouraging, and even dangerous, but it is never pointless or wasted. As we walk with the Lord and witness to His presence and power, our lives are not in vain! We can be sure of that. - DAVID MCCASLAND

부족함이 전혀 없음

아무것도 챙기지 않고 여행을 떠나는 것을 상상해보십시오. 기본적인 필수품, 갈아입을 옷, 돈이나 신용카드 등, 아무것도 없이 말입니다. 아주 미련하고 겁나는 일처럼 들리지 않습니까? 하지만, 예수님이 그의 열두 제자들에게 가서 가르치고 병을 고치라고 첫 사명을 주시며 보내실 때 바로 그와 같이 하라고 말씀하셨습니다. “여행을 위하여 지팡이 외에는 양식이나 배낭이나 전대의 돈이나 아무것도 가지지 말며 신만 신고 두 벌 옷도 입지 말라”(마가복음 6:8-9).

그러나 나중에 예수님은 자신이 떠난 후의 사역을 준비시키시며 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “이제는 전대 있는 자는 가질 것이요 배낭도 그리하고 검 없는 자는 겉옷을 팔아 살지어다”(누가복음 22:36).

그러면, 여기서 말하는 요점이 무엇 일까요? 그것은 공급해주시는 하나님을 신뢰하라는 것입니다.

예수님은 제자들의 첫 번째 전도여행을 돌아보시며 그들에게 “내가 너희를 전대와 배낭과 신발도 없이 보내었을 때에 부족한 것이 있더냐”라고 물으시자 그들은 “없었나이다”라고 대답했습니다(35절). 제자들은 하나님이 그들에게 하라고 하신 일들을 행하는 데 필요한 모든 것들을 다 공급받았습니다. 주님은 주님의 일을 행할 권능과 함께(마가복음 6:7) 그들의 필요를 공급해주셨습니다.

우리의 필요를 채워주시는 하나님을 신뢰하고 있습니까? 그러면서도 개인적으로 필요한 것들을 함께 챙기고 계획하고 계십니까? 주님은 우리가 주님의 일을 행하는 데 필요한 것을 공급해주신다는 믿음을 가지도록 합시다.

Lack Nothing

Imagine going on a trip without luggage. No basic necessities. No change of clothing. No money or credit cards. Sounds both unwise and terrifying, doesn’t it?

But that’s exactly what Jesus told His twelve disciples to do when He sent them out on their first mission to preach and heal. “Take nothing for the journey except a staff,” said Jesus. “No bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt” (Mark 6:8–9).

Yet later on when Jesus was preparing them for their work after He was gone, He told His disciples, “If you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one” (Luke 22:36).

So, what’s the point here? It’s about trusting God to supply.

When Jesus referred back to that first trip, He asked the disciples, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” And they answered, “Nothing” (v. 35). The disciples had everything they needed to carry out what God had called them to do. He was able to supply them with the power to do His work (Mark 6:7).

Do we trust God to supply our needs? Are we also taking personal responsibility and planning? Let’s have faith that He will give us what we need to carry out His work. - POH FANG CHIA
