다 알아요

우리 아들과 며느리에게 응급상황이 발생했습니다. 손자 카메론이 폐렴과 기관지염으로 힘들어해서 병원에 가야만 했던 것입니다. 아들과 며느리는 우리에게 다섯 살짜리 아들 나단을 학교에서 집으로 데려다줄 수 있는지 물었습니다. 아내 말린과 나는 기꺼이 그러겠다고 했습니다.

나단이 차에 탔을 때, 아내 말린이 “우리가 오늘 너를 데리러 와서 놀랬니?”라고 묻자 손자 녀석이 “아뇨!”라고 대답했습니다. 왜 놀라지 않았냐고 물었더니 그는 “난 뭐든 다 아니까요!”라고 대답했습니다.

다섯 살짜리 아이는 모든 걸 다 안다고 주장할 수 있지만, 조금 더 나이를 먹은 우리는 그렇지 않다는 걸 압니다. 우리는 흔히 답보다는 질문거리를 더 많이 가지고 있습니다. 우리는 비록 모든 것을 다 알지 못해도 모든 것을 아시는 하나님을 우리가 알고 있다는 것을 종종 잊어버린 채, 인생의 왜, 언제, 어떻게에 대해 궁금해 합니다.

시편 139편 1절과 3절은 모든 것을 아시는 우리 하나님께서 우리를 얼마나 종합적으로 친밀하게 이해하고 계신지에 대해서 말합니다. 다윗은 “여호와여 주께서 나를 살펴보셨으므로 나를 아시나이다...... 나의 모든 길과 내가 눕는 것을 살펴보셨으므로 나의 모든 행위를 익히 아시오니”라고 말합니다. 우리를 완벽하게 사랑하시고, 오늘 우리가 맞닥뜨릴 문제를 모두 알고 계시며, 인생의 모든 상황에서 우리를 돕는 최선의 방법을 아시는 하나님을 우리가 알고 있다는 사실이 얼마나 위안이 되는지요.

우리의 지식에는 언제나 한계가 있지만 하나님을 아는 지식이 가장 중요합니다. 우리는 그분을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

I Know Everything

Our son and daughter-in-law had an emergency. Our grandson Cameron was suffering from pneumonia and bronchitis and needed to go to the hospital. They asked if we could pick up their five-year-old son, Nathan, from school and take him home. Marlene and I were glad to do so.

When Nathan got in the car, Marlene asked, “Are you surprised that we came to get you today?” He responded, “No!” When we asked why not, he replied, “Because I know everything!”

A five-year-old can claim to know everything, but those of us who are a bit older know better. We often have more questions than answers. We wonder about the whys, whens, and hows of life—often forgetting that though we do not know everything, we know the God who does.

Psalm 139:1 and 3 speak of our all-knowing God’s allencompassing, intimate understanding of us. David says, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. . . . You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.” How comforting to know God loves us perfectly, is fully aware of what we will face today, and He knows how best to help us in every circumstance of life.

Our knowledge will always be limited, but knowing God is what matters most. We can trust Him. - BILL CROWDER

예수님 품에 의지함

나는 가끔 밤에 베개에 머리를 대고 기도할 때 내가 예수님의 품에 기대어있다는 상상을 합니다. 나는 그럴 때마다 성경이 요한 사도에 대해 우리에게 말하고 있는 내용이 생각납니다. 요한은 자신이 최후의 만찬 때 예수님 옆에 어떻게 앉아 있었는지에 대해 기록하고 있습니다. “예수의 제자 중 하나 곧 그가 사랑하시는 자가 예수의 품에 의지하여 누웠는지라” (요한복음 13:23).

Leaning on Jesus

Sometimes when I put my head on my pillow at night and pray, I imagine I’m leaning on Jesus. Whenever I do this, I remember something the Word of God tells us about the apostle John. John himself writes about how he was sitting beside Jesus at the Last Supper: “One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him” (JOHN 13:23).

John used the term “the disciple whom Jesus loved” as a way of referring to himself without mentioning his own name. He is also depicting a typical banquet setting in first-century Israel, where the table was much lower than those we use today, about knee height. Reclining without chairs on a mat or cushions was the natural position for those around the table. John was sitting so close to the Lord that when he turned to ask him a question, he was “leaning back against Jesus” (JOHN 13:25), with his head on his chest.

John’s closeness to Jesus in that moment provides a helpful illustration for our lives with Him today. We may not be able to touch Jesus physically, but we can entrust the weightiest circumstances of our lives to Him. He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (MATT. 11:28). How blessed we are to have a Savior whom we can trust to be faithful through every circumstance of our lives! Are you “leaning” on Him today? - JAMES BANKS

대언자

1962년 6월에 플로리다주에 있는 교도소 감방에서, 클래런스 얼 기드온은 그가 저지르지 않았다고 말하는 범죄에 대한 판결을 미국 대법원에서 다시 검토해주기를 요청하는 편지를 썼습니다. 그는 변호사를 선임할 재력이 없다고 덧붙였습니다.

일 년 후, 대법원은 기드온 대 웨인라이트라는 역사적인 판례를 통 해 , 자신을 변호할 비용을 감당할 수 없는 사람들은 대언자인 국선 변호사를 정부에서 반드시 제공해주어야 한다는 규정을 세웠습니다. 이러한 결정으로 법정 선임된 변호사의 도움을 통해 클래런스 기드온은 재심을 거쳐 무죄로 석방되었습니다.

하지만 만약 우리가 무죄가 아니라면 어떻게 되겠습니까? 바울 사도에 따르면 우리는 모두 유죄입니다. 그러나 천국 법정에서는 우리의 영혼을 변호해주고 돌보아주시는, 하나님께서 비용을 지불해주시는 변호사를 제공해줍니다 (요한1서 2:2). 하나님 아버지를 대신하여 예수님은 우리에게 오셔서, 수감자들조차 외부에서 경험한 어떤 것보다 더 좋은 것으로 이야기하는 자유를 주십니다. 그것은 바로 마음과 생각의 자유입니다.

우리가 잘못한 것 때문에, 혹은 누군가 우리에게 잘못한 것 때문에 고통을 당할지라도, 예수님은 우리 모두를 위해 대변해주실 수 있습니다. 주님은 그 최고의 권위로, 간구하는 모든 자에게 자비와 용서, 그리고 위로를 주십니다.

우리의 대언자 되시는 예수님은 실망이나 두려움, 후회가 가득한 감옥을 주님이 임재하시는 곳으로 바꾸어주실 수 있습니다.

The Advocate

From a Florida prison cell in June 1962, Clarence Earl Gideon wrote a note asking the United States Supreme Court to review his conviction for a crime he said he didn’t commit. He added that he didn’t have the means to hire a lawyer.

One year later, in the historic case of Gideon v. Wainright, the Supreme Court ruled that people who cannot afford the cost of their own defense must be given a public defender—an advocate—provided
by the state. With this decision, and with the help of a court-appointed lawyer, Clarence Gideon was retried and acquitted.

But what if we are not innocent? According to the apostle Paul, we are all guilty. But the court of heaven provides an Advocate who, at God’s expense, offers to defend and care for our soul (1 JOHN 2:2). On behalf of his Father, Jesus comes to us offering a freedom that even prison inmates have described as better than anything they’ve experienced on the outside. It is a freedom of heart and mind.

Whether suffering for wrongs done by us or to us, we all can be represented by Jesus. By the highest of authority He responds to every request for mercy, forgiveness, and comfort.

Jesus, our Advocate, can turn a prison of lost hope, fear, or regret into the place of His presence. - MART DEHAAN

좋은 일, 나쁜 일, 그리고 험악한 일

친한 친구가 “우리는 좋은 일, 나쁜 일, 그리고 험악한 일들을 서로 이야기할 수 있어서 기쁘다!”라고 문자메시지를 보내왔습니다. 우리는 오랫동안 친구로 지내오면서 기쁜 일이나 실망스러운 일들도 함께 나눌 줄 알게 되었습니다. 우리는 우리가 결코 완벽한 사람이 아니라는 것을 잘 알고 있기 때문에, 어려운 일들을 함께 나누기도 하고 서로의 성공을 함께 기뻐하기도 합니다.

다윗이 골리앗을 물리친 좋은 날들 로부터 시작하여, 다윗과 요나단도 견고한 우정을 갖게 되었습니다(사무엘상 18:1-4). 요나단의 아버지가 다윗을 질투하는 나쁜 시간 동안에 그들은 두려움을 함께 나누었습니다(18:6-11; 20:1-2). 마침내 사울이 다윗을 죽이려고 계획했던 험악한 시간 동안에도 그들은 함께 고난을 겪었습니다(20:42).

진정한 우정은 하나님의 선물입니다, 왜냐하면 그러한 우정은 좋을 때나 나쁠 때나 험악할 때에 늘 충실하게 함께해 주시는 완벽한 친구이신 하나님을 보여주기 때문입니다. 주님은 우리에게 이렇게 상기시켜 주십니다. “내가 결코 너희를 버리지 아니하고 너희를 떠나지 아니하리라”(히브리서 13:5).

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

A dear friend of mine sent me a text message that said, “I’m so glad we can tell each other the good, the bad, and the ugly!” We have been friends for many years, and we have learned to share our joys and our failures. We recognize we are far from perfect, so we share our struggles but we also rejoice in each other’s successes.

David and Jonathan had a solid friendship too, beginning with the good days of David’s victory over Goliath (1 SAM. 18:1–4). They shared their fears during the bad days of Jonathan’s father’s jealousy (18:6–11; 20:1–2). Finally, they suffered together during the ugly days of Saul’s plans to kill David (20:42).

Good friends don’t abandon us when external circumstances change. They stay with us through the good and the bad days. Good friends also may point us to God in the ugly days, when we may feel tempted to walk away from our Lord.

Real friendships are a gift from God because they exemplify the perfect Friend, who remains loyal through the good, the bad, and the ugly days. As the Lord reminds us, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you” (HEB. 13:5). KEILA OCHOA

기쁨을 주나요?

어느 젊은 일본 여성이 정리 정돈하는 방법에 대해 쓴 책이 전 세계적으로 200만 부가 팔렸습니다. 마리에 콘도의 핵심 메시지는 집과 옷장 안에 쌓여있는, 사람들을 짓누르는 불필요한 물건들을 제거하는데 도움을 주고 있습니다. 그녀는 “물건을 하나씩 들고서, ‘이것이 기쁨을 주나?’ 하고 자문해보십시오.”라고 말합니다. 만일 질문에 대한 답이 긍정적이면 계속 보관하고, 답이 부정적이라면 그 물건을 버리는 것입니다.

바울 사도는 빌립보에 있는 성도들에게 그리스도와의 관계 속에서 기쁨을 추구 하라고 강권했습니다. “주 안에서 항상 기뻐하라 내가 다시 말하노니 기뻐하라” (빌립보서 4:4). 그는 그들이 걱정거리 때문에

우리가 매일 해야 할 일들과 책임져야 하는 일들을 살펴보면, 모든 것이 즐거운 일들만은 아님을 발견합니다. 그렇지만 우리는 “이 일은 어떻게 하나님 마음과 또 우리의 마음에 기쁨을 불러일으킬 수 있을까?”라고 자문해볼 수 있습니다. 우리가 일을 하는 이유가 변하면, 그 일에 대해 우리가 느끼는 방식에도 변화를 가져올 수 있습니다.

“끝으로 형제들아 무엇에든지 참되며......경건하며......옳으며...... 정결하며......사랑받을 만하며......칭찬 받을 만하며 무슨 덕이 있든지 무슨 기림이 있든지 이것들을 생각하라”(8절).

Does It Spark Joy?

A young Japanese woman’s book on decluttering and organizing has sold two million copies worldwide. The heart of Marie Kondo’s message is helping people get rid of unneeded things in their homes and closets—things that weigh them down. “Hold up each item,” she says, “and ask, ‘Does it spark joy?’” If the answer is yes, keep it. If the answer is no, then give it away.

The apostle Paul urged the Christians in Philippi to pursue joy in their relationship with Christ. “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (PHIL. 4:4). Instead of a life cluttered with anxiety, he urged them to pray about everything and let God’s peace guard their hearts and minds in Christ (VV. 6–7).

Looking at our everyday tasks and responsibilities, we see that not all of them are enjoyable. But we can ask, “How can this spark joy in God’s heart and in my own?” A change in why we do things can bring a transformation in the way we feel about them.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true . . . noble . . . right . . . pure . . . lovely . . . admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (V. 8).

단련되고 정화됨

가수이자 작곡가인 메리디스 앤드류스는 인터뷰에서, 자신은 봉사활동과 창작 작업, 부부간의 문제, 그리고 어머니 역할을 균형 있게 해내기가 너무 힘겨웠다고 말했습니다. 그녀는 그 고통을 돌아보면서 “마치 하나님께서 저를 정제시키시는 시간으로 느껴졌고, 거의 으깨어지는 과정을 통과시키시는 듯 했어요.” 라고 말했습니다.

Tried and Purified

During an interview, singer and songwriter Meredith Andrews spoke about being overwhelmed as she tried to balance outreach, creative work, marital issues, and motherhood. Reflecting on her distress, she said, “I felt like God was taking me through a refining season, almost through a crushing process.”

Job was overwhelmed after losing his livelihood, his health, and his family. Worse still, although Job had been a daily worshiper of God, he felt that the Lord was ignoring his pleas for help. God seemed absent from the landscape of his life. Job claimed he could not see God whether he looked to the north, south, east, or west (JOB 23:2–9).

In the middle of his despair, Job had a moment of clarity. His faith flickered to life like a candle in a dark room. He said, “[God] knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold” (V. 10). Christians are tried and purified when God uses difficulty to burn away our self-reliance, pride, and earthly wisdom. If it seems as if God is silent during this process and He is not answering our cries for help, He may be giving us an opportunity to grow stronger in our faith.

있는 곳에서 시작하라

나는 오늘 초원에서 홀로 외로이 자라는 꽃을 우연히 보게 되었습니다. 시인 토마스 그레이의 멋진 한 구절을 빌린다면, “그 감미로움을 사막 바람에 낭비하는” 작은 보라색 꽃이었습니다. 아무도 전에 이 꽃을 보지 않았을 것이 분명하고, 아마 아무도 다시 이 꽃을 보지 못할 것입니다. 나는 ‘왜 이런 아름다운 꽃이 이곳에 있을까?’ 생각해보았습니다.

자연은 헛되이 낭비되는 법이 없습 니다. 자연은 자연을 존재케 하신 하나님의 진실하심과 선하심, 아름다움을 매일 보여주고 있습니다. 자연은 새롭고 신선한 하나님의 영광을 날마다 선포합니다. 우리는 그 아름다움을 통해 하나님을 보고 있는지요? 아니면 그저 힐끗 보고는 별 관심 없이 대수롭지 않게 여기고 있습니까?

Begin Where You Are

I came across a solitary flower growing in a meadow today—a tiny purple blossom “wasting its sweetness in the desert air,” to borrow from the poet Thomas Gray’s wonderful line. I’m sure no one had seen this particular flower before, and perhaps no one will see it again. Why this beauty in this place? I thought.

Nature is never wasted. It daily displays the truth, goodness, and beauty of the One who brought it into being. Every day nature offers a new and fresh declaration of God’s glory. Do I see Him through that beauty, or do I merely glance at it and shrug it off in indifference?

All nature declares the beauty of the One who made it. Our response can be worship, adoration, and thanksgiving—for the radiance of a cornflower, the splendor of a morning sunrise, the symmetry of one particular tree.

Author C. S. Lewis describes a walk in the forest on a hot summer day. He had just asked his friend how best to cultivate a heart thankful toward God. His hiking companion turned to a nearby brook, splashed his face and hands in a little waterfall, and asked, “Why not begin with this?” Lewis said he learned a great principle in that moment: “Begin where you are.”

모든 상황에서

우리는 우리 동네에 거듭되는 단전에 대한 불평을 많이 합니다. 일주일에 세 번이나 단전되기도 하고, 단전이 24시간까지 지속되어 동네가 온통 암흑에 빠지기도 합니다. 기본적인 가전제품들을 사용하지 못하게 될 때에는 그 불편함을 견디기가 어렵습니다.

그리스도인인 이웃은 “이것도 하나님 께 감사해야 할 일인가요?”라고 가끔 물어 봅니다. 그녀는 “범사에 감사하라 이것이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희를 향하신 하나님의 뜻이니라”라는 데살로니가전서 5장 18절 말씀을 언급하고 있는 것입니다. 우리는 항상 “네, 물론이지요. 우리는 범사에 하나님께 감사합니다.”라고 말합니다. 하지만 그렇게 마지못해 대답하는 우리의 태도는 전기가 나갈 때마다 투덜대는 우리의 모습과는 맞지 않습니다.

그러나 어느 날 ‘모든 상황에서’ 하나님께 감사한다는 우리의 믿음에 새로운 의미가 부여되었습니다. 직장에서 돌아왔을 때 나는 우리 이웃이 눈에 띄게 충격을 받은 모습으로 다음과 같이 외치는 것을 보았습니다. “전기가 나가서 얼마나 감사한지요. 우리 집이 불에 타 우리 가족과 내가 다 죽었을지도 몰라요!”

쓰레기 수거 차량이 그녀의 집 앞에 있는 전봇대를 들이받아 고압전선이 근처의 몇몇 집 위로 떨어진 것이었습니다. 만일 전선에 전기가 흐르고 있었다면 사망자가 생겼을 수도 있었습니다.

우리는 당면하고 있는 어려운 상황들 때문에 “주님, 감사합니다.” 라고 말하기 힘들지도 모릅니다. 하지만 우리가 하나님의 의도를 볼 수 있건 없건 간에, 모든 상황 속에서 우리로 하나님을 신뢰하게 하는 기회를 보고 계시는 우리 하나님께 감사할 수 있습니다.

In All Circumstances

In our suburb we complain about the constant power outages. They can hit three times in a week and last up to twenty-four hours, plunging the neighborhood into darkness. The inconvenience is hard to bear when we cannot use basic household appliances.

Our Christian neighbor often asks, “Is this also something to thank God for?” She is referring to 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.” We always say, “Yes, of course, we thank God in all things.” But the halfhearted manner in which we say it is contradicted by our grumbling every time the power goes off.

One day, however, our belief in thanking God in all circumstances took on new meaning. I returned from work to find our neighbor visibly shaken as she cried, “Thank Jesus the power was off. My house would have burned down, and my family and I would have perished!”

A refuse-collection truck had hit the electricity pole in front of her house and brought down the high-tension cables right over several houses. Had there been power in the cables, fatalities would have been likely.

The difficult circumstances we face can make it hard to say, “Thanks, Lord.” We can be thankful to our God who sees in every situation an opportunity for us to trust Him—whether or not we see His purpose. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

보고 있다

서로를 돕고 격려하는 온라인 작가들의 모임에서 한 친구가 “널 보고 있어”라고 말했습니다. 불안해하고 스트레스를 받던 나는 친구의 말에 평안함과 행복감을 느꼈습니다. 그녀는 나의 희망과 두려움, 고난과 꿈을 “보고” 나를 사랑했습니다.

내 친구의 간단하지만 힘 있는 격려를 들었을 때, 나는 아브람의 가정에 노예로 있던 하갈을 떠올렸습니다. 오랫동안 사래와 아브람이 후사를 바라고 있다가, 사래는 당시 문화의 관습을 따라 남편에게 하갈을 통해 아이를 가지라고 말했습니다. 그러나 하갈은 임신하자 사래를 멸시하였습니다. 그에 대한 보응으로 사래가 하갈을 학대하자, 그녀는 사막으로 도망갔습니다.

주님은 하갈이 고통과 혼란 속에 있는 것을 보시고, 그녀를 축복하시며 그녀가 많은 후손의 어미가 될 것이라고 약속해주셨습니다. 주님을 만난 후 자신이 혼자가 아니며 버림받지도 않았다는 것을 알게 된 하갈은 주님을 “나를 살피시는 하나님”(창세기 16:13)이라는 뜻으로 “엘 로이”라고 불렀습니다.

하갈이 살핌을 받고 사랑을 받은 것처럼 우리도 마찬가지로 살핌을 받고 사랑을 받고 있습니다. 우리가 친구나 가족들에게 무시당하고 버려진 것 같이 느껴질지라도, 우리 하나님 아버지는 세상에 보이는 우리의 모습뿐 아니라, 우리의 모든 숨은 감정과 두려움까지도 다 보고 계십니다. 하나님은 우리에게 생명을 가져다주는 말씀들을 해주십니다.

I See You

“I see you,” a friend said in an online writers’ group wherewe support and encourage each other. Having felt stressed and anxious, I experienced a sense of peace and wellbeing with her words. She “saw” me—my hopes, fears, struggles, and dreams—and loved me.

When I heard my friend’s simple but powerful encouragement, I thought of Hagar, a slave in Abram’s household. After many years of Sarai and Abram still longing for an heir, Sarai followed the custom of the culture and told her husband to conceive through Hagar. But when Hagar became pregnant, she treated Sarai with contempt. When Sarai mistreated her in return, Hagar fled far away to the desert.

The Lord saw Hagar in her pain and confusion, and He blessed her with the promise that she would be the mother of many descendants. After the encounter, Hagar called the Lord “El Roi,” which means “the God who sees me” (GEN. 16:13), for she knew she wasn’t alone or abandoned.

As Hagar was seen—and loved—so are we. We might feel ignored or rejected by friends or family, yet we know that our Father sees not only the face we present to the world, but all of our secret feelings and fears. He speaks the words that bring us life. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

어떤 경우에?

네 살배기 애셔가 자신이 좋아하는 모자 달린 스웨터 아래로 신이 난 얼굴을 빠끔히 내밀었습니다. 천으로 입 부분을 단 악어의 머리 모양을 한 그 옷은 마치 아이의 머리를 삼키는 것 같이 보였습니다. 아이의 엄마는 가슴이 철렁 내려앉았습니다. 엄마는 오랫동안 만나지 못했던 한 가정을 방문하면서 그들에게 자기 가족에 대한 좋은 인상을 주고 싶었던 것입니다.

“얘야, 그 옷은 이런 때 입기에는 좋지 않은 것 같구나.”라고 엄마가 말했습니다.

“아니, 아주 좋아!”라고 애셔가 밝게 대꾸하였습니다.

“음, 그러면 어떨 때 그 옷을 입을 수 있을까?” 엄마의 물음에 애셔가 대답 했습니다. “알잖아. 평생!” 애셔는 그 스웨터를 그대로 입게 되었습니다.

이 유쾌한 남자아이는 “사람이 사는 동안에 기뻐하며 선을 행하는 것보다 나은 것이 없다”는 전도서 3장 12 절 말씀의 참 뜻을 이미 알고 있습니다. 전도서가 우울하게 보이고, 또한 흔히 오해받는 이유는 하나님의 관점이 아닌 사람의 관점으로 씌어졌기 때문입니다. 저자인 솔로몬 왕은 “일하는 자가 그 수고로 말미암아 무슨 이익이 있으랴”(9절)라고 물었습니다. 하지만 전도서 전체를 읽어보면 우리는 어렴풋이 희망을 발견할 수 있습니다. 솔로몬은 이렇게도 기록하였습니다. “사람마다 먹고 마시는 것과 수고함으로 낙을 누리는 것이 하나님의 선물인 줄을 또한 알았도다”(13절).

우리가 섬기는 하나님은 우리가 즐거움을 누리도록 좋은 것들을 주십니다. 하나님이 하시는 모든 것들은 “영원히 있을 것입니다”(14절). 주님을 인정하고 주님의 사랑의 명령들을 따를 때에, 주님은 우리의
삶에 목적과 의미와 기쁨을 불어 넣어주십니다.

What’s the Occasion?

Four-year-old Asher’s gleeful face peeked out from beneath his favorite hooded sweatshirt. His alligator-head hooded sweatshirt, complete with plush jaws that seemed to swallow his head! His mom’s heart sank. She wanted the family to make a good impression as they visited a family they hadn’t seen in a long time.

“Oh, Hon,” she said, “that may not be appropriate for the occasion.”

“Of course it is!” Asher protested brightly.

“Hmm, and what occasion might that be?” she asked. Asher replied, “You know. Life!” He got to wear the shirt.

That joyful boy already grasps the truth of Ecclesiastes 3:12—”There is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.” Ecclesiastes can seem depressing and is often misunderstood because it’s written from a human perspective, not God’s. The writer, King Solomon, asked, “What do workers gain from their toil?” (V. 9). Yet throughout the book we catch glimpses of hope. Solomon also wrote: “That each of [us] may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all [our] toil— this is the gift of God” (V. 13).

We serve a God who gives us good things to enjoy. Everything He does “will endure forever” (V. 14). As we acknowledge Him and follow His loving commands, He infuses our
