우리는 무엇을 원하는가?

얼마 전 나는 한 노인으로부터 그가 손녀에게 “나는 사람이 마차를 타던 시대로부터 달나라에 가는 시대까지 살았다.”고 이야기했다고 들었습니다. 그러고 나더니 그는 감회에 젖어 “인생이 그렇게 짧을 줄은 생각도 못했다.”고 했습니다.

인생은 짧습니다. 그래서 많은 사람이 영원한 삶을 바라며 예수님께 돌아옵니다. 그것이 나쁜 것은 아니지만, 우리는 영생의 의미가 정말 무엇인지 잘 모르고 있습니다. 우리는 그릇된 것들을 갈구하는 경향이 있으며, 좀 더 좋은 것을 갈망하면서 그것이 우리 바로 앞에 기다리고 있다고 생각합니다. ‘내가 학교만 졸업한다면, 그 직업만 가진다면, 결혼만 한다면, 은퇴만 할 수 있다면......’ 그러다가 어느 날 우리도 세월이 어디로 날아가 버렸는지 물으며 우리의 할아버지가 했던 말을 되풀이하게 됩니다.

그러나 사실 우리는 ‘지금’ 영생을 가지고 있는 것입니다. 바울 사도는 “그리스도 예수 안에 있는 생명의 성령의 법이 죄와 사망의 법에서 너를 해방하였음이라”(로마서 8:2)라고 쓰면서, “영을 따르는 자는 영의 일을 생각하나니”(5절)라고 말했습니다. 다시 말하면, 우리가 예수님께로 가면 우리의 원하는 것들이 바뀌게 되고, 그럼으로써 우리가 가장 원하는 것을 자연스럽게 얻게 된다는 것입니다. “영의 생각은 생명과 평안이니라”(6절).

우리가 진정한 삶을 살려면 먼저 다른 어딘가에 가서 다른 사람들과 무엇인가 다른 일을 해야 한다는 것은 인생의 커다란 거짓말 중의 하나입니다. 우리가 예수님 안에서 생명을 얻으면 인생의 짧음을 한탄하는 대신, 지금 그리고 영원히 예수님과 함께 하는 삶을 온전히 누리게 될 것입니다.

영원히 살려면 지금 우리 안에 예수님을 영접해야 한다.

What Do We Want?

“I went from the horse-and-buggy to a man walking on the moon,” said the elderly man to his granddaughter, who shared this story with me recently. But then he mused, “I never thought it would be so short.”

Life is short, and many of us turn to Jesus because we want to live forever. That’s not bad, but we don’t comprehend what eternal life really is. We tend to crave the wrong things. We long for something better, and we think it’s just ahead. If only I were out of school. If only I had that job. If only I were married. If only I could retire. If only . . . And then one day we catch an echo of our grandfather’s voice as we wonder where the time has flown.

The truth is, we possess eternal life now . The apostle Paul wrote, “The law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (ROM 8:2). Then he said, “Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires” (V 5). In other words, our desires change when we come to Christ. This naturally gives us what we most desire. “The mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace” (V 6).

It’s one of life’s great lies that we need to be somewhere else, doing something else, with someone else before we start truly living. When we find our life in Jesus, we exchange regret over life’s brevity for the full enjoyment of life with Him, both now and forever. - TIM GUSTAFSON

완전한 평안

한 친구가 평안과 만족을 찾아 여러 해를 보낸 이야기를 해주었습니다. 그 친구는 남편과 함께 사업에 성공하여 큰 집도 사고, 멋진 옷과 비싼 보석들도 살 수 있었습니다. 그러나 이런 것을 다 소유해도 평안을 원하는 내면의 갈망은 채워지지 않았고, 유력한 사람들과 친분을 쌓는 것도 소용이 없었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 마음이 우울하고 절망감을 느낄때, 어떤 친구가 그녀에게 예수님의 복음을 들려주었습니다. 거기서 그녀는 평강의 왕이신 예수님을 만났고, 그녀가 갖고 있던 진정한 평안과 만족에 대한 이해가 완전히 바뀌었습니다.

예수님은 제자들과 함께 최후의 만찬을 한 후 그들에게 그런 평안에 대해 말씀하셨습니다(요한복음 14장). 거기서 예수님은 곧 일어날 일들, 곧 그의 죽음과 부활, 성령 강림의 사건들을 앞두고 제자들을 준비시키셨습니다. 예수님은 세상이 줄 수 있는 어떤 평안과도 견줄 수 없는 평안을 말씀하시면서, 제자들이 삶의 고난 가운데서도 그와 같은 평강을 찾는 법을 배우기를 원하셨습니다.

나중에 부활하신 예수님은 주님의 죽음 후에 두려움에 떨고 있는 제자들에게 나타나 “너희에게 평강이 있을지어다”(요한복음 20:19)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이제 예수님은 제자들에게, 그리고 우리들에게 주님이 우리를 위해 행하신 일 안에서 안식한다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 새롭게 깨닫게 해주셨습니다. 이 사실을 알 때 우리는 늘 변하는 감정보다 훨씬 더 깊은 확신을 얻을 수 있습니다.

Perfect Peace

A friend shared with me that for years she searched for peace and contentment. She and her husband built up a successful business, so she was able to buy a big house, fancy clothes, and expensive jewelry. But these possessions didn’t satisfy her inner longings for peace, nor did her friendships with influential people. Then one day, when she was feeling low and desperate, a friend told her about the good news of Jesus. There she found the Prince of Peace, and her understanding of true peace and contentment was forever changed.

Jesus spoke words of such peace to His friends after their last supper together (JOHN 14), when He prepared them for the events that would soon follow: His death, resurrection, and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Describing a peace—unlike anything the world can give—He wanted them to learn how to find a sense of well-being even in the midst of hardship.

Later, when the resurrected Jesus appeared to the frightened disciples after His death, He greeted them, saying, “Peace be with you!” (JOHN 20:19). Now He could give them, and us, a new understanding of resting in what He has done for us. As we do, we can find the awareness of a confidence far deeper than our ever-changing feelings. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

신뢰할 수 있는 사람

친구가 눈물을 흘리며 말했습니다. “난 정말 아무도 믿을 수가 없어. 믿고 나면 꼭 상처를 받아.” 그녀의 이야기를 듣고서 나도 화가 났습니다. 그녀가 정말 믿을 수 있다고 생각했던 전 남자친구가 헤어지자마자 그녀에 대한 소문을 퍼뜨리기 시작한 것입니다. 어린 시절 받았던 고통을 이겨내고 다시 사람을 믿어보려 애썼던 그녀는 이 배신으로 사람은 신뢰할 수 없다는 것을 다시 한 번 확인한 듯했습니다.

나는 어떻게 위로해야 할지 몰라 힘들었습니다. 전적으로 신뢰할 만한 사람을 만날 수가 없다고 생각하는 것은 잘못이며, 대부분의 사람들은 진정으로 친절하며 신뢰할 수 있다고 말할 수 없었습니다. 그녀의 이야기는 나도 겪어보아 잘 아는 아픔으로, 내가 살면서 경험했던 뜻밖의 배신의 순간들을 생각나게 해주었기 때문입니다. 사실 성경은 인간의 본성을 매우 솔직하게 보여줍니다. 잠언 기자는 20장 6절에서 내 친구가 겪은 것과 같은, 배신의 고통을 영원히 잊지 못하는 아픔을 이야기합니다.

그렇지만 나는 사람들의 잔인함도 크게 보면 단지 한 단면일 뿐이라고 이야기해줄 수 있었습니다. 사람들이 주는 상처가 실제적이고 고통스럽더라도, 예수님은 진실한 사랑이 가능하다는 것을 보여주셨습니다. 요한복음 13장 35절에서 예수님은 제자들에게 그들이 보여주는 사랑으로 말미암아 그들이 예수님의 제자인 줄 세상이 알 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리에게 상처를 주는 사람들이 있을 수 있겠지만, 예수님 때문에 주님의 사랑을 대가 없이 나눠주며 우리를 조건 없이 받아주고 아껴줄 사람들도 언제나 있습니다. 예수님의 한없는 사랑 안에서 안식하며, 우리도 치유와, 공동체의 삶과, 예수님처럼 남을 사랑하는 용기를 얻을 수 있기를 소원합니다.

Someone to Trust

“I just can’t trust anyone,” my friend said through tears. “Every time I do, they hurt me.” Her story angered me—an ex-boyfriend, whom she really thought she could trust, had started spreading rumors about her as soon as they broke up. Struggling to trust again after a pain-filled childhood, this betrayal seemed just one more confirmation that people could not be trusted.

I struggled to find words that would comfort. One thing I could not say was that she was wrong about how hard it is to find someone to fully trust, that most people are completely kind and trust-worthy. Her story was painfully familiar, reminding me of moments of unexpected betrayal in my own life. In fact, Scripture is very candid about human nature. In Proverbs 20:6, the author voices the same lament as my friend, forever memorializing the pain of betrayal.

What I could say is that the cruelty of others is only part of the story. Although wounds from others are real and painful, Jesus has made genuine love possible. In John 13:35, Jesus told His disciples that the world would know they were His followers because of their love. Although some people may still hurt us, because of Jesus there will also always be those who, freely sharing His love, will unconditionally support and care for us. Resting in His unfailing love, may we find healing, community, and the courage to love others as He did. - MONICA BRANDS

테이블 락

우리 마을이 한눈에 내려다보이는 바위 고원인 ‘테이블 락’ 에는 환한 불빛의 커다란 십자가가 우뚝 서 있습니다. 그 근처에 몇 채의 집이 지어졌지만, 집주인들은 안전상의 이유로 옮겨가야만 했습니다. 그 집들은 ‘테이블 락’의 견고한 지반과 가까운 거리에 있었지만 안전하지 않았습니다. 건물이 지반 위에서 하루에 7~8센티미터씩 움직이면서 주요 수도관 파열의 위험이 있었고, 그로 인해 집이 더 빨리 밀려날 수 있었던 것입니다.

예수님은 그의 말씀을 듣고 순종하는 사람들을 바위에 집을 짓는 사람들에 비유하십니다(누가복음 6:47-48). 이런 집들은 폭풍우도 견뎌냅니다. 그와 반대로, 주님의 가르침에 귀를 기울이지 않는 사람들 같이 단단한 기반 없이 지어진 집들은 급류를 극복해낼 수 없다고 말씀하십니다.

하나님은 내가 드렸던 것보다 더 많은 것을 원하신다는 것을 알면서도, “이 정도면 됐어!”라고 생각하며 나의 양심을 무시하고 싶은 유혹에 빠질 때가 많이 있었습니다. 근처의 움직이는 산자락에 지어진 집들을 보면서, 하나님께 순종하는 일에 있어서는 “이 정도 가까우면 됐지!” 하는 생각은 통하지 않는다는 것을 깨달았습니다. 단단한 기초 위에 집을 짓고 자주 엄습하는 인생의 폭풍을 견디는 사람처럼 되기 위해 우리는 주님의 말씀에 온전히 귀를 기울여야 합니다.

Table Rock

A large, illuminated cross stands erect on Table Rock, a rocky plateau overlooking my hometown. Several homes were built on neighboring land, but recently the owners have been forced to move out due to safety concerns. Despite their close proximity to the firm bedrock of Table Rock, these homes aren’t secure. They have been shifting atop their foundations—nearly three inches every day—causing risk of major water pipes breaking, which would accelerate the sliding.

Jesus compares those who hear and obey His words to those who build their homes on rock (LUKE 6:47–48). These homes survive the storms. By contrast, He says homes built without a firm foundation—like people who don’t heed His instruction—cannot weather the torrents.

On many occasions, I’ve been tempted to ignore my conscience when I knew God asked more of me than I had given, thinking my response had been “close enough.” Yet the homes in the shifting foothills nearby have depicted for me that being “close” is nowhere near enough when it comes to obeying Him. To be like those who built their homes on a firm foundation and withstand the storms of life that so often assail us, we must heed the words of our Lord completely. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

우리에게 필요한 모든 것

나는 내가 하고 있는 일을 감당하기에는 능력이 너무 부족하다는 생각을 가끔 합니다. 주일학교에서 가르치는 것이든, 친구에게 조언하는 것이든, “오늘의 양식”에 실릴 글을 쓰는 것이든, 그런
일들이 종종 내가 감당할 수 있는 능력보다 더 크게 느껴집니다. 베드로처럼 나는 아직도 배워야 할 것이 많습니다.

신약성경은 베드로가 주님을 따를 때 드러난 그의 부족한 점들을 잘 보여줍니다. 그는 물 위로 걸어서 예수님께로 가다가 물에 빠지기 시작했고(마태복음 14:25-31), 예수님이 붙잡혔을 때 그를 모른다고 맹세하기까지 했습니다(마가복음 14:66-72). 그러나 부활하신 그리스도를 만나고 성령의 능력으로 그의 삶은 변화되었습니다.

베드로는 하나님의 “신기한 능력으로 생명과 경건에 속한 모든 것을 우리에게 주셨으니 이는 자기의 영광과 덕으로써 우리를 부르신 이를 앎으로 말미암음이라” (베드로후서 1:3)는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 많은 결점을 지녔던 사람으로부터 듣는 얼마나 놀라운 고백인지요!

“[하나님이] 그 보배롭고 지극히 큰 약속을 우리에게 주사 이 약속으로 말미암아 너희로 정욕 때문에 세상에서 썩어질 것을 피하여 신성한 성품에 참여하는 자가 되게 하려 하셨느니라”(4절). 우리는 주 예수 그리스도와의 관계를 통하여 하나님께 영광을

돌리고 다른 사람들을 돕고 오늘의 시련을 대처하는 데 필요한 지혜와 인내와 능력을 받습니다. 예수님을 통해 우리는 주저하는 마음이나 부족하다는 느낌을 극복할 수 있습니다.

어느 상황에서도 주님은 그를 섬기고 영화롭게 하는 데 필요한 모든 것을 우리에게 주셨습니다.

Everything We Need

I often feel completely inadequate for the tasks I face. Whether it’s teaching Sunday school, advising a friend, or writing articles for this publication, the challenge often seems to be larger than my ability. Like Peter, I have a lot to learn.

The New Testament reveals Peter’s shortcomings as he tried to follow the Lord. While walking on water to Jesus, Peter began to sink (MATT 14:25–31). When Jesus was arrested, Peter swore he didn’t know him (MARK 14:66–72). But Peter’s encounter with the risen Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit changed his life.

Peter came to understand that God’s “divine power has given us every- thing we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by his own glory and goodness” (2 PETER 1:3). An amazing statement from a man who had many flaws!

“[God] has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may partici- pate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires” (V 4).

Our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ is the source of the wisdom, patience, and power we need to honor God, help others, and meet the challenges of today. Through Him, we can overcome our hesitations and feelings of inadequacy.

In every situation, He has given us everything we need to serve and honor Him. - DAVID MCCASLAND

깨어짐의 아름다움

킨츠기는 깨진 도자기를 수선하는 수백 년 된 일본 예술입니다. 수지를 섞은 금가루로 부서진 조각들을 붙이거나 깨어진 틈을 메꾸는데, 놀라울 정도로 단단하게 결합시킵니다. 그 예술은 고친 부분을 감추려고 하기 보다는 그 깨어진 부분으로부터 아름다움을 창조해냅니다.

성경은 우리가 지은 죄를 진정으로 뉘우칠 때 하나님도 우리의 깨어짐을 귀하게 여기신다고 말합니다. 다윗이 밧세바와 간음하고 계략을 세워 그녀의 남편을 죽인 후, 나단 선지자가 그의 잘못을 지적하자 그는 회개했습니다. 다윗이 나중에 한 기도를 보면 우리가 죄를 지었을 때 하나님이 바라시는 것이 무엇인지 알게 해줍니다. “주께서는 제사를 기뻐하지 아니하시나니 그렇지 아니하면 내가 드렸을 것이라 주는 번제를 기뻐하지 아니하시나이다 하나님께서 구하시는 제사는 상한 심령이라 하나님이여 상하고 통회하는 마음을 주께서 멸시하지 아니하시리이다”(시편 51:16-17).

우리 마음이 죄로 인해 깨어질 때, 하나님은 구주께서 십자가 위에서 자비롭게 베풀어주신 엄청난 용서로 우리의 마음을 고쳐주십니다. 우리가 하나님 앞에서 자신을 낮출 때 하나님은 우리를 사랑으로 받아주시고, 친밀함이 회복됩니다.

얼마나 자비로우신 하나님이신지요! 겸허한 마음을 원하시는 하나님과 그분의 놀라울 정도로 아름다운 친절을 생각하면서, 다음의 기도 구절이 오늘 우리의 기도가 될 수 있기를 바랍니다. “하나님이여 나를 살피사 내 마음을 아시며 나를 시험하사 내 뜻을 아옵소서 내게 무슨 악한 행위가 있나 보시고 나를 영원한 길로 인도하소서”(시편 139:23-24).

The Beauty of Brokenness

Kintsugi is a centuries-old Japanese art of mending broken pottery. Gold dust mixed with resin is used to reattach broken pieces or fill in cracks, resulting in a striking bond. Instead of trying to hide the repair, the art makes something beautiful out of brokenness.

The Bible tells us that God also values our brokenness, when we are genuinely sorry for a sin we have committed. After David engaged in adultery with Bathsheba and plotted the death of her husband, the prophet Nathan confronted him, and he repented. David’s prayer afterwards gives us insight into what God desires when we have sinned: “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise” (PS. 51:16–17).

When our heart is broken over a sin, God mends it with the priceless forgiveness generously offered by our Savior at the cross. He receives us with love when we humble ourselves before Him, and closeness is restored.

How merciful is God! Given His desire for a humble heart and the breathtaking beauty of His kindness, may another scriptural prayer be ours today: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”

자비를 구하고 베풀기

내 친구가 선택한 일로 그녀가 더 깊이 죄에 빠지게 되고 나도 영향을 많이 받았다고 불평하자, 나와 매주 만나 기도하던 자매가 그녀의 손을 내 손 위에 얹으며 말했습니다. “우리 모두를 위해 같이 기도해요.”

나는 못마땅해 하며 말했습니다. “우리 모두요?” “그래요. 우리 고결함의 기준을 세우신 분은 예수님이시기 때문에 우리의 죄를 다른 사람들의 죄와 비교해서는 안 된다고 늘 말씀하지 않으셨나요?”

“그런 진실이 좀 불편하지만, 당신 말이 맞아요. 나의 비판적인 태도나 영적인 교만이 내 친구의 죄와 다를 바 없네요.”라고 나는 대답했습니다.

“그리고 친구에 대해 이야기 하면서 우리는 험담을 하고 있어요. 그건......” “우리가 죄를 짓고 있는 거지요.” 나는 머리를 숙였습니다. “우리를 위해 기도해 주세요.”

누가복음 18장에서 예수님은 서로 매우 다른 모습으로 성전에 올라가 기도하는 두 사람에 대해 비유로 말씀하셨습니다(9-14절). 바리새인처럼 우리는 끊임없이 우리 자신을 다른 사람들과 비교하는 덫에 빠질 수 있습니다. 우리는 우리 자신을 자랑하고(11-12절), 마치 다른 사람들을 판단할 권리를 갖고 있거나, 다른 사람들을 변화시킬 책임이나 능력이 있는 것처럼 살기도 합니다.

그러나 우리가 거룩한 삶의 본으로 예수님을 바라보고 세리처럼 하나님의 선하심을 직접 만나게 된다면, 우리는 더욱 간절히 하나님의 은혜를 구하게 될 것입니다(13절). 우리가 개인적으로 주님의 사랑의 긍휼과 용서를 경험하게 되면, 우리는 영원히 변화되고 힘을 입어 다른 사람들을 정죄하지 않고, 그들에게 자비를 구하고 베풀게 될 것입니다.

Expect and Extend Mercy

When I complained that a friend’s choices were leading her deeper into sin and how her actions affected me, the woman I prayed with weekly placed her hand over mine. “Let’s pray for all of us.” I frowned. “All of us?”

“Yes,” she said. “Aren’t you the one who always says Jesus sets our standard of holiness, so we shouldn’t compare our sins to the sins of others?”

“That truth hurts a little,” I said, “but you’re right. My judgmental attitude and spiritual pride are no better or worse than her sins.”

“And by talking about your friend, we’re gossiping. So—” “We’re sinning.” I lowered my head. “Please, pray for us.”

In Luke 18, Jesus shared a parable about two men approaching the temple to pray in very different ways (VV. 9–14). Like the Pharisee, we can become trapped in a circle of comparing ourselves to other people. We can boast about ourselves (VV. 11–12) and live as though we have the right to judge and the responsibility or the power to change others.

But when we look to Jesus as our example of holy living and encounter His goodness firsthand, like the tax collector, our desperate need for God’s grace is magnified (V. 13). As we experience the Lord’s loving compassion and forgiveness personally, we’ll be forever changed and empowered to expect and extend mercy, not condemnation, to others. - XOCHITL DIXON

경의를 표하라

나는 알링턴 국립묘지 무명용사의 묘지에서 거행되는 엄숙하고 장엄하면서도 소박한 위병 교대식을 볼 때마다 언제나 감동을 받습니다. 그렇게 세심하게 연출된 교대식은 이름이나 희생이 “오직 하나님에게만 알려진” 군인들에게 바치는 감동적인 경의의 표시입니다. 사람들이 떠나고 난 뒤에도, 궂은 날씨에도 개의치 않고, 일정한 보폭으로 날마다 시간마다 왔다 갔다 하며 보초를 서는 장면들은 동일한 감동을 줍니다.

2003년 9월 태풍 이사벨이 워싱턴 시를 향해 돌진해오고 있을 때, 국립묘지의 보초병들은 폭풍이 심할 경우 대피해도 된다고 전달받았습니다. 그러나 예상한 대로 위병들은 대피하기를 거절하였습니다! 그들은 태풍에 맞닥뜨려서도 자신을 생각지 않고 전사한 전우들에게 경의를 표하기 위해 그 자리를 지켰습니다.

우리가 확고하고 사심 없이 주님께 헌신하며 사는 것이 예수님이 우리에게 원하시는 것이며, 이것이 마태복음 6:1-6 예수님의 가르침의 근간을 이룬다고 나는 믿습니다. 성경은 우리에게 선한 일을 하고 거룩하게 살라고 말합니다. 그러나 예배와 순종의 행위여야 하지(4-6절), 자기 영광을 위해 드러내기 위해 꾸며낸 행동이어서는 안 됩니다(2절). 바울 사도가 우리에게 우리 몸을 “산 제물”(로마서 12:1)로 드리라고 권할 때, 그는 온 생애를 통한 신실함을 지지하고 있는 것입니다.

우리가 혼자 있을 때든 사람들 앞에 있을 때든 온 마음 다해 주님께 헌신하는 모습을 보일 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Let Honor Meet Honor

I’ve always been impressed by the solemn, magnificent simplicity of the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. The carefully choreographed event is a moving tribute to soldiers whose names—and sacrifice—are “known but to God.” Equally moving are the private moments of steady pacing when the crowds are gone: back and forth, hour after hour, day by day, in even the worst weather.

In September 2003, Hurricane Isabel was bearing down on Washington, DC, and the guards were told they could seek shelter during the worst of the storm. Surprising almost no one, the guards refused! They unselfishly stood their post to honor their fallen comrades even in the face of a hurricane.

Underlying Jesus’s teaching in Matthew 6:1–6, I believe, is His desire for us to live with an unrelenting, selfless devotion to Him. The Bible calls us to good deeds and holy living, but these are to be acts of worship and obedience (VV. 4–6), not orchestrated acts for self-glorification (V. 2). The apostle Paul endorses this whole-life faithfulness when he pleads with us to make our bodies “a living sacrifice” (ROM. 12:1).

May our private and public moments speak of our devotion and wholehearted commitment to You, Lord. - RANDY KILGORE

참새 한 마리도

한 평생을 기품 있고 고상하게 사셨던 어머니가 이제 심신이 약해지는 연세가 되어 호스피스의 침대에 누워 있습니다. 숨 쉬기도 힘들어하며 점점 쇠약해져가는 어머니의 상태와 창유리 너머 반대쪽에 유혹하는 듯이 춤추는 너무나 아름다운 봄날이 대조적이었습니다.

세상의 어떠한 마음의 준비도 이별이라는 냉엄한 현실에서 우리를 지탱해주기에 충분하지 않습니다. ‘죽음은 정말 무례한 것이구나!’라고 나는 생각했습니다.

창 바깥쪽 새 모이통으로 눈을 돌렸습니다. 한 마리 콩새가 씨앗을 먹으려고 가까이로 가볍게 날아왔습니다. 갑자기 익숙한 성구가 머릿속에 떠올랐습니다. “너희 아버지께서
허락하지 아니하시면 그 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라”(마태복음 10:29). 이것은 예수님이 유대 지역에 복음을 전하라고 제자들에게 명령하실 때 하신 말씀인데, 이 원리는 우리 모두에게도 마찬가지로 적용됩니다. 주님은 “너희는 많은 참새보다 귀하니라”라고 말씀하셨습니다(31절).

어머니는 움직이시더니 눈을 뜨시고는, 어린 시절로 돌아가 네덜란드 식 애칭을 사용해 어머니의 모친을 지칭하며 말했습니다. “엄마가 돌아가셨어!”

“네, 맞아요. 지금 예수님과 같이 계세요.”라고 아내가 말했습니다. 확신이 없는 채로 어머니는 계속 “조이스와 짐은?” 하며 당신의 언니와 오빠를 물어보았습니다. 아내가 말했습니다. “네, 그분들도 예수님과 같이 계세요. 우리 모두 곧 같이 있게 될 거예요.”

“기다리기가 너무 힘들어.”라고 어머니가 조용히 말씀하셨습니다.

Not One Sparrow

My mother, so dignified and proper her entire life, now lay in a hospice bed, held captive by debilitating age. Struggling for breath, her declining condition contradicted the gorgeous spring day that danced invitingly on the other side of the windowpane.

All the emotional preparation in the world cannot sufficiently brace us for the stark reality of goodbye. Death is such an indignity! I thought.

I diverted my gaze to the bird feeder outside the window. A grosbeak flitted close to help itself to some seed. Instantly a familiar phrase popped into my mind: “Not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it” (MATT. 10:29 NLT). Jesus had said that to His disciples as He gave them marching orders for a mission to Judea, but the principle applies to all of us. “You are worth more than many sparrows,” He told them (V. 31).

My mom stirred and opened her eyes. Reaching back to her childhood, she used a Dutch term of endearment for her own mother and declared, “Muti’s dead!”

“Yes,” my wife agreed. “She’s with Jesus now.” Uncertain, Mom continued. “And Joyce and Jim?” she questioned of her sister and brother. “Yes, they’re with Jesus too,” said my wife. “But we’ll be with them soon!”

역기능적

‘역기능적’이라는 단어는 개인이나 가정, 인간관계, 단체, 심지어는 정부를 묘사할 때도 자주 쓰입니다. ‘기능적’ 이란 단어의 의미가 제대로 작동하는 상태를 말하는 반면, ‘역기능적’이라는 말은 그 반대로, 고장 나거나 제대로 작동하지 않아서 애초에 설계된 대로 쓸 수 없게 된 상태를 말합니다.

바울 사도는 영적으로 역기능적인 인간을 묘사하는 것으로 로마서를 시작하고 있습니다(1:18-32). 우리는 모두 다 그 반항하는 무리들 속에 속해 있습니다. “다 치우쳐 함께 무익하게 되고 선을 행하는 자는 없나니 하나도 없도다...... 모든 사람이 죄를 범하였으매 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하더니”(3:12,23).

그러나 여기 기쁜 소식이 있습니다. “그리스도 예수 안에 있는 속량으로 말미암아 하나님의 은혜로 값없이 의롭다 하심을 얻은 자 되었느니라......믿음으로 말미암아”(24-25절). 우리가 그리스도를 우리의 삶에 초청하고 하나님이 제시하시는 용서와 새로운 삶을 받아들일때, 우리는 하나님이 우리를 창조하신 대로의 사람이 되어가는 길에 머무르게 됩니다. 우리는 당장 완벽해지지는 않지만, 더 이상 고장 나고 기능을 제대로 하지 못하는 상태로 남아 있지 않게 됩니다.

성령님을 통해 우리는 말하고 행동하는 것으로 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있는 힘과, “옛 사람을 벗어 버리고......오직 [우리의] 심령이 새롭게 되어 하나님을 따라 의와 진리의 거룩함으로 지으심을 받은 새 사람을 입을”(에베소서 4:22-24) 수 있는 능력을 매일 얻을 수 있습니다.

Dysfunctional

The word dysfunctional is often used to describe individuals, families, relationships, organizations, and even governments. While functional means it’s in proper working order, dysfunctional is the opposite—it’s broken, not working properly, unable to do what it was designed to do.

In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul begins by describing a spiritually dysfunctional humanity (1:18–32). We are all part of that rebellious company: “All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. . . . For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (3:12, 23).

The good news is that “all are justified freely by [God’s] grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus . . . to be received by faith” (VV. 24–25). When we invite Christ into our lives and accept God’s offer of forgiveness and new life, we are on the path to becoming the person He created us to be. We don’t immediately become perfect, but we no longer have to remain broken and dysfunctional.

Through the Holy Spirit we receive daily strength to honor God in what we say and do and to “put off [our] old self . . . to be made new in the attitude of [our] minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (EPH. 4:22–24).- DAVID MCCASLAND
