잔디와 은혜

내 친구 아치는 휴가에서 돌아오자 이웃이 자신의 마당 5피트 (1.5미터) 안쪽으로 나무 울타리를 쳐 놓았다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그 울타리를 치워달라고 이웃과 실랑이를 하는데 몇 주가 지나갔습니다. 심지어 치우는 비용의 반을 내면서 돕겠다고 제안해도 아무 소용이 없었습니다. 친구는 법에 호소할 수도 있었지만 그 권리는 접어두고 울타리를 그냥 두기로 했습니다. 이웃에게 조금이나마 하나님 은혜를 보여주고 싶었던 것입니다.

“그 친구 겁쟁이네!”라고 말할 수도 있겠지요. 그러나 아닙니다. 그는 힘이 아주 센 남자였지만 잔디 대신 은혜를 선택한 것입니다.

아브라함과 롯이 땅에 그들의 가축이 넘쳐나자 이것 때문에 서로 갈등하였던 일이 생각납니다. “그러므로 아브람의 가축의 목자와 롯의 가축의 목자가 서로 다투고 또 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람도 그 땅에 거주하였는지라”(창세기 13:7). 가장 좋은 땅을 선택한 롯은 나중에 모든 것을 잃었고, 남은 땅을 가졌던 아브라함은 약속의 땅을 얻었습니다(12-17절).

우리에게는 권리가 있으며 그것을 요구할 수도 있습니다. 특히 다른 사람의 권리가 관련되어 있을 때에는 더 그렇습니다. 그리고 이 권리를 강하게 주장해야 할 때도 있습니다. 바울이 불법을 행하는 공회 앞에서
그렇게 했습니다(사도행전 23:1-3 참조). 그러나 우리는 세상에 더 좋은 방법을 보여주기 위해 권리를 내려놓는 선택도 할 수 있습니다. 이것이 바로 성경에서 말하는 “온유함”입니다. 그것은 유약함이 아닙니다. 하나님의 통치 아래에서의 강함입니다.

Grass or Grace

My friend Archie came home from vacation to find his neighbor had erected a wooden fence five feet inside his property line. Several weeks went by during which Archie tried to work with his neighbor to remove the fence. He offered to help and to split the cost of the work, but to no avail. Archie could have appealed to civil authorities, but he chose to forgo that right in this instance and allow the fence to stand—to show his neighbor something of the grace of God.
“Archie is a wimp!” you say. No, he was man of towering strength, but he chose grace over a patch of grass.
I think of Abraham and Lot, who fell into conflict because their flocks and herds overwhelmed the land. “Quarreling arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites and the Perizzites [the unbelieving community] were also living in the land at that time” (Genesis 13:7). Lot chose the best of the land and lost everything in the end. Abraham took what was left over and gained the promised land (vv. 12–17).
We do have rights and we can claim them, especially when other’s rights are involved. And sometimes we should insist on them. Paul did when the Sanhedrin acted unlawfully (see Acts 23:1–3). But we can choose to set them aside to show the world a better way. This is what the Bible calls “meekness”—not weakness. Strength under God’s control. - DAVID H. ROPER

우리를 채워주시는 하나님

“내가 뭘 한 거지?” 인생에서 가장 신나는 순간이어야 할 때인데도 나는 극심한 외로움을 겪고 있었습니다. 대학 졸업 후 내가 자란 곳에서 수백 마일 떨어진 도시에 바라던 첫 직장을 갖게 되었습니다. 그러나 대단했던 출발의 설렘은 곧 사라졌습니다. 좁은 아파트에 가구는 하나도 없고 도시는 낯설었습니다. 아는 사람도 없었습니다. 일은 재미있었지만 외로움이 몰려왔습니다.

어느 날 밤, 집의 벽에 기대어 앉아 성경을 펴자 하나님이 우리를 충만케 하신다는 약속의 시편 16편 11절 말씀이 눈에 들어왔습니다. 나는 기도했습니다. “주님, 저는 이 직장에 잘 들어왔다고 생각하는데 지금 너무 외롭습니다. 주님이 가까이 계시다는 생각으로 저를 채워주소서.” 나는 몇 주 동안 이 단순한 기도를 여러
가지로 다르게 표현하며 계속 했습니다. 어떤 밤에는 외로움이 누그러지며 하나님의 임재를 깊이 느끼기도 했지만, 어떤 밤에는 홀로 있다는 것을 여전히 뼈저리게 느꼈습니다.

그러나 밤마다 그 말씀을 다시 보며 그 말씀에 마음의 닻을 내리니 하나님께서 내 믿음을 점점 깊어지게 해주셨습니다. 나는 전에는 한 번도 느껴보지 못했던 하나님의 신실하심을 경험했습니다. 그리고 내가 할 일은 단지 내 마음을 주님께 온전히 쏟아 붓고......성령으로 우리를 채워주시겠다는 하나님의 약속을 믿으면서 주님의 신실하신 응답을 겸손한 마음으로 기다리는 것이라는 것을 배웠습니다.

When God Fills Us

“What had I done?” It should have been one of the most exciting times of my life. Instead, it was one of the loneliest. I’d just gotten my first “real” job after college, in a city hundreds of miles from where I grew up. But the thrill of that big step quickly faded. I had a tiny apartment. No furniture. I didn’t know the city. I didn’t know anyone. The job was interesting, but the loneliness felt crushing.

One night, I sat at home with my back against the wall. I opened my Bible and stumbled onto Psalm 16, where verse 11 promises God will fill us. “Lord,” I prayed, “I thought this job was the right thing, but I feel so alone. Please fill me with a sense of Your nearness.” I offered variants of that plaintive plea for weeks. Some nights, my sense of loneliness eased, and I had a deep experience of God’s presence. Other nights, I still felt achingly isolated.

But as I returned to that verse, anchoring my heart in it night by night, God gradually deepened my faith. I experienced His faithfulness in a way I never had before. And I learned that my job was simply to pour out my heart to Him . . . and humbly await His faithful response, trusting His promise to fill us with His Spirit. - ADAM HOLZ

하나님 보시기에 소중한

데이비드라는 이름이 있었지만 대부분의 사람들은 그를 “거리의 바이올린 연주자”라 불렀습니다. 데이비드는 남루한 차림새의 노인이었는데 우리 도시에서 사람들이 많이 다니는 장소에 자리를 잡고 지나가는 사람들을 위해 뛰어난 바이올린 솜씨로 세레나데를 연주했습니다. 거리에서 그의 연주를 듣는 사람들은 이따금
그들 앞에 놓인 바이올린 가방에 1달러를 놓아주곤 했습니다. 그러면 데이비드는 연주를 계속하면서 미소와 함께 머리를 끄덕이며 감사를 표했습니다.

얼마 전 데이비드의 사망 소식이 지역 신문에 나면서, 그가 여러 언어에 능통했고 유명 대학을 나왔으며 오래 전에는 주 상원의원에 출마한 적도 있었던 것이 알려졌습니다. 겉모습만 보고 그를 평가했던 사람들은 상당한 그의 이력에 놀라움을 감추지 못했습니다.

성경은 우리에게 “하나님이 자기 형상대로 사람을 창조하셨다” (창세기1:27)고 말합니다. 이것은 우리의 겉모습이나 이루어놓은 업적, 남들이 우리를 어떻게 생각하느냐와 상관없이 우리 각자에게는 타고난 가치가 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 우리가 우리의 죄 때문에 스스로 하나님을 멀리 떠났을 때에도, 하나님은 우리를 너무나 귀하게 여기셔서 그분의 독생자를 보내어 우리가 구원받고 하나님과 영원히 사는 길을 보여주셨습니다.

하나님은 우리를 사랑하십니다. 그리고 우리 주변의 모든 사람들은 하나님 보시기에 소중한 사람들입니다. 다른 사람들과 하나님의 사랑을 나눔으로 하나님을 향한 우리의 사랑을 나타내기를 바랍니다.

Precious to God

His name was David, but most just called him “the street fiddler.” David was a disheveled, older man who was a regular fixture in popular places in our city, serenading passers-by with unusual skill at his violin. In exchange for his music, listeners would sometimes place a dollar in the open instrument case before them on the sidewalk. David would smile and nod his head in thanks as he continued to play.

When David died recently and his obituary appeared in a local paper, it was revealed that he spoke several languages, was the graduate of a prestigious university, and had even run for the state senate years ago. Some expressed surprise at the extent of his accomplishments, having assessed him on the basis of appearance alone.

Scripture tells us that “God created mankind in his own image” (GENESIS 1:27). This reveals an inherent worth within each of us, regardless of how we look, what we have achieved, or what others may think of us. Even when we chose to turn from God in our sinfulness, God valued us so much that He sent His only Son to show us the way to salvation and eternity with Him.

We are loved by God, and all around us are those who are precious to Him. May we express our love for Him in return by sharing His love with others. - JAMES BANKS

통화 가능 지역

휴대폰의 좋은 점 중 하나는 거의 아무런 제약 없이 남들과 통화할 수 있다는 것입니다. 그 결과로 많은 사람들이 운전 중에 통화하거나 문자를 보내다가 종종 끔찍한 자동차 사고를 내기도 합니다. 세계 여러 나라에서는 그와 같은 사고를 막기 위해서 방심운전을 법으로 금지하고 있습니다. 미국에서는 운전자들이 차를
세우고 마음 놓고 안전하게 통화하거나 문자를 보낼 수 있는 장소를 알리는 표지판이 고속도로 곳곳에 세워지고 있습니다.

운전자의 휴대폰 통화를 제한하는 것은 좋은 생각입니다. 그런데 아무런 제약 없이 통화할 수 있는 또 다른 통화가 있습니다. 그것은 기도입니다. 하나님은 우리가 오고 가거나 가만히 앉아있거나 언제든 하나님을 부르라고 하십니다. 신약성경에서 바울은 하나님과 통화하기를 원하는 사람은 누구나 “쉬지 말고 기도하라”(데살로니가전서 5:17)고 조언합니다. 바울은 이런 하나님의 문호개방 정책과 함께 우리에게 “항상 기뻐하고”(16절) “범사에 감사하라”(18절)고 권면합니다. 하나님은 우리에게 기뻐하고 감사하라고 하십니다. 그것은 지속적인 기도에 기반을 둔 그리스도를 통한 하나님을 믿는 믿음의 표현입니다.

우리는 급한 일이든 긴 대화든 상관없이 하나님께 다가갈 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 기쁨과 감사와 필요와 의문과 걱정들을 끊임없이 계속 들으시며(히브리서 4:15-16) 우리가 그분과 관계를 맺기를 원하십니다. 우리는 항상 기도 가능 지역에 있습니다.

Phone Zone

One of the benefits of cell phones is that we now have virtually unlimited access to others. As a result, many people talk on the phone or text even while driving—sometimes resulting in terrible car crashes. To avoid such disasters, many areas of the world have made distracted driving illegal. In the United States, highway signs are popping up to remind drivers of special cell phone zones where they can pull off the road to safely talk and text to their heart’s delight.

While it is a good idea to restrict mobile phone communication for drivers, there is another kind of communication that has no restrictions: prayer. God invites us to call on Him whether we are coming, going, or sitting still. In the New Testament, Paul’s words advise each person who wants to communicate with God to “pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Paul brackets this divine open-door policy by encouraging us to “rejoice always” (v. 16) and to “give thanks in all circumstances” (v. 18). God calls us to joy and thanksgiving—expressions of faith in God through Christ anchored in continual prayer.

God is available for our quick cry or for a lengthy conversation. He welcomes us into a relationship with Him, a constant and endless sharing of our joys and gratitude, needs, questions, and concerns (Hebrews 4:15–16). We are always in the prayer zone. - BILL CROWDER

우리는 부러지지 않는다

캘리포니아 태생이며 화창한 것을 좋아하는 나는 차가운 것은 어떤 것이든 다 꺼립니다. 하지만 사진 속의 아름다운 눈 풍경만은 정말 좋아합니다. 그래서 일리노이 주에 있는 한 친구가 창문 너머에 있는 묘목의 겨울 사진을 보내주었을 때 미소 짓지 않을 수 없었습니다. 그런데 주렁주렁 달린 반짝이는 고드름 때문에 앙상하고 마디진 나뭇가지들이 휘어진 모습을 보고는 감탄하던 마음이 서글퍼졌습니다. 고드름 때문에 휘어진 나뭇가지들이 부러지지 않고 얼마나 버틸 수 있을까? 그 무거움으로 곧 부러질 것 같은 나뭇가지들은
많은 걱정으로 움츠러든 내 어깨의 모습과 비슷하다는 생각이 들었습니다.

예수님은 가장 귀한 보화는 세상에 있지 않으며 사라지지도 않는다고 분명히 말씀하신 후 우리의 걱정을
내려놓으라고 권유하십니다. 우주를 창조하시고 운행하시는 분이 그의 자녀들을 사랑하고 부양하시기 때문에 우리의 소중한 시간을 걱정하는 데 낭비할 필요가 없습니다. 하나님은 우리의 필요를 아시고 우리를
보살펴주십니다(마태복음 6:19-32).

하나님은 우리가 쉽게 걱정에 빠지려 한다는 것도 알고 계십니다. 하나님은 우리가 먼저 그분께 나아와, 지금 하나님이 함께 계시고 공급해주신다는 것을 신뢰하고 하루하루를 믿음으로 살라고 말씀하십니다(33-34절).

우리가 이 세상을 살아가면서 감당하기 힘든 문제들이나 불확실한 상황들에 부딪혀 기운이 빠질 때가 있을 것입니다. 우리는 걱정의 무게 때문에 잠시 휘어질 수는 있지만, 하나님을 믿을 때 우리는 부러지지
않습니다.

We Won’t Break

As a native Californian and lover of all things sunny, I shy away from all things cold. I do, however, enjoy beautiful photos of snow. So I couldn’t help but smile when my friend from Illinois shared a winter picture of a sapling outside her window. Admiration turned to sadness when I noticed its bare, knotted branches bowing under the heavy fringe of sparkling icicles.

How long could those bending boughs endure before breaking under their icy burdens? The heaviness threatening to crack the tree’s limbs reminded me of my shoulders, hunched beneath the weight of worries.

After Jesus affirms that the greatest treasures are not earthly or temporary, He encourages us to release our anxious thoughts. The Creator and Sustainer of the universe loves and provides for His children, so we don’t have to waste our precious time worrying. God knows our needs and will care for us (Matthew 6:19–32).

He also knows we’ll be tempted to succumb to worry. He tells us to come to Him first, trust His presence and provision in the present, and live by faith one day at a time (vv. 33–34).

In this life, we’ll face overwhelming troubles and uncertainties that can make our shoulders droop. We may temporarily bend under the weight of worrying. But when we trust God, we won’t break. - XOCHITL DIXON

잃었으나 다시 찾음

친척과 쇼핑을 하시던 장모님이 없어지셨다는 것을 알게 되었을 때 아내와 나는 무척 당황했습니다. 기억상실증과 정신적 혼란을 앓고 계신 장모님이 어떤 행동을 하실 지 알 수 없었기 때문입니다. 주변을 배회하고 계실까, 아니면 집 쪽으로 갈 것이라고 생각하고 아무 버스에나 올라타신 건 아닐까? “제발 어머니를 찾게 해주세요.”라고 하나님께 기도하며 장모님을 찾기 시작하면서 우리의 머릿속에는 최악의 상황들이 그려지고 있었습니다.

몇 시간 후 멀리 떨어진 곳에서 도로를 헤매고 계신 장모님이 발견되었습니다. 장모님을 찾게 된 것은 하나님의 큰 축복 이었습니다. 몇 달 후, 하나님은 장모님을 축복하셔서 여든 살의 나이에 예수 그리스도를 구주로 영접하게 하셨습니다.

예수님은 사람을 잃어버린 양에 비유하시며 말씀하십니다. “너희 중에 어떤 사람이 양 백 마리가 있는데 그 중의 하나를 잃으면 아흔아홉 마리를 들에 두고 그 잃은 것을 찾아내기까지 찾아다니지 아니하겠느냐 또 찾아낸 즉......, 벗과 이웃을 불러 모으고 말하되 나와 함께 즐기자 나의 잃은 양을 찾아내었노라 하리라”(누가복음 15:4-6).

목자는 양들의 숫자를 세고 한 마리 한 마리가 제대로 있는지 확인합니다. 자신을 그런 목자에 비유하셨던 예수님도 그와 똑같이 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 귀하게 여기십니다. 인생에서 방황하며 삶의 목적을 고민하고 찾던 우리가 언제 예수님을 영접하더라도 너무 늦은 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리가 하나님의 사랑과 축복을 경험하기를 원하십니다.

Lost but Found

When we discovered that my mother-in-law had gone missing while shopping with a relative, my wife and I were frantic. Mom suffered from memory loss and confusion, and there was no telling what she might do. Would she wander the area, or hop onto any bus thinking it would take her home? Worst-case scenarios spun through our minds as we began to search for her, crying out to God, “Please find her.”

Hours later, my mother-in-law was spotted stumbling along a road, miles away. How God blessed us in being able to find her. Several months later, He blessed her: at eighty years of age, my mother-in-law turned to Jesus Christ for salvation.

Jesus, comparing humans to lost sheep, gives us this illustration: “Suppose [a shepherd] has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, . . . he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep” (LUKE 15:4–6).

Shepherds counted their sheep to make sure every one was accounted for. In the same way, Jesus, who likens himself to that shepherd, values each of us, young and old. When we’re wandering in life, searching, wondering about our purpose, it’s never too late to turn to Christ. God wants us to experience His love and blessings. - LESLIE KOH

두려움에서의 해방

우리의 몸은 두려움과 공포감에 반응합니다. 가슴에 무거운 돌을 얹고 있는 듯한 느낌, 심장이 요동치며 가쁜 숨을 몰아쉬는 것 등은 우리의 두려움을 보여주는 신호입니다. 이런 본능적인 몸의 반응은 우리로 불안감을 쉽게 떨치지 못하게 합니다.

예수님이 오천명을 먹이시는 기적을 베푸신 날 밤, 제자들은 엄청난 두려움을 느꼈습니다. 예수님은 홀로 남아 기도하시기 위해 제자들을 벳새다로 먼저 보내셨습니다. 한밤중에 바람에 맞서 노를젓던 제자들은 갑자기 물 위를 걸어오시는 예수님을 보았습니다. 주님을 유령으로 착각한 제자들은 큰 두려움에 빠졌습니다 (마가복음 6:49-50).

하지만 예수님은 제자들을 안심시키시고 두려워하지 말고 용기를 가지라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님이 배에 오르자 바람은 잦아들고 배는 뭍에 도착했습니다. 예수님이 그들에게 평안을 주셨을 때 제자들의 두려움은 모두 사라졌을 거라고 생각됩니다.

두려움에 빠져 숨쉬기조차 힘들 때, 우리는 예수님의 능력을 믿음으로 안심할 수 있습니다. 예수님이 우리의 두려움의 파도를 잠잠케 하시든지, 아니면 우리에게 그것에 맞설 힘을 주시든지, 주님은 “모든 지각에 뛰어난”(빌립보서 4:7) 주님의 평강의 선물을 우리에게 주실 것입니다. 그리고 주님이 우리를 두려움에서 해방시키실 때, 우리의 몸과 마음은 안식의 상태로 되돌아갈 수 있습니다.

The Release of Fear

Our bodies react to our feelings of dread and fear. A weight in the pit of our stomachs, along with our hearts pounding as we gulp for breath, signal our sense of anxiety. Our physical nature keeps us from ignoring these feelings of unease.

The disciples felt shockwaves of fear one night after Jesus had performed the miracle of feeding more than five thousand people. The Lord had sent them ahead to Bethsaida so He could be alone to pray. During the night, they were rowing against the wind when suddenly they saw Him walking on the water. Thinking He was a ghost, they were terrified (MARK 6:49–50).

But Jesus reassured them, telling them not to be afraid and to take courage. As He entered their vessel, the wind died down and they made it to the shore. I imagine that their feelings of dread calmed as they embraced the peace He bestowed.

When we’re feeling breathless with anxiety, we can rest assured in Jesus’s power. Whether He calms our waves or strengthens us to face them, He will give us the gift of His peace that “transcends all understanding” (PHILIPPIANS 4:7). And as He releases us from our fears, our spirits and our bodies can return to a state of rest. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

두려움 없이 나눔

우리 아들 재비어가 6살이었을 때, 내 친구가 이제 막 걷는 아기를 데리고 왔는데 재비어는 그에게 장난감 몇 개를 주고 싶어 했습니다. 나는 어린 아들이 관대하게 주는 것을 보고 기뻐했는데, 나중에는 남편이 여러 도시에서 여러 가게를 돌아다니며 찾은 동물인형까지 주는 것이었습니다. 내 친구는 그것이 아주 인기 있는 장난감인 것을 알아차리고는 정중하게 거절했지만, 재비어는 자기 선물을 친구 아들의 손에 쥐어 주고는 “우리 아빠는 같이 가지고 놀 장난감을 많이 주거든.” 이라고 말했습니다.

재비어가 자신 있게 주는 것을 나에게서 배웠다고 말하고 싶지만, 사실 나는 종종 하나님과 다른 사람들에게 내가 가진 것들을 나누어주지 않았습니다. 그러나 내 하나님 아버지께서 내가 갖고 있고 필요로 하는 모든 것을 나에게 주신다는 것을 기억하면 나누기가 훨씬 쉬워집니다.

구약에서 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님을 신뢰하는 마음으로 하나님이 공급하신 것 중의 일부를 레위 제사장들에게 나누어주어 그들이 다시 다른 사람들을 도울 수 있게 하라고 명령하셨습니다. 그러나 백성들이 그것을 거절하자 말라기 선지자는 그들이 하나님의 것을 도둑질하고 있다고 말했습니다(말라기 3:8-9). 하지만 그들이 기꺼이 베풂으로써 주님께서 공급하시고 보호하신다는 약속을 신뢰하는 것을 보여주었다면(10-11절), 다른 사람들이 그들을 하나님의 축복받은 백성으로 인정했을 것입니다(12 절).

우리가 재정이든 시간이든, 아니면 하나님이 우리에게 맡기신 재능을 관리하는 것이든, 주는 것은 예배의 행위가 될 수 있습니다. 자유롭게, 그리고 두려움 없이 주는 행위는 본원적으로 관대하게 베푸시는 사랑의 하나님 아버지의 돌보심을 우리가 확신한다는 것을 보여주는 것입니다.

Fearless Giving

When my son Xavier was six years old, a friend brought her toddler to visit and Xavier wanted to give him a few toys. I delighted in our little giver’s generosity, until he offered a stuffed animal my husband had searched several stores in different cities to find. Recognizing the high-demand toy, my friend tried to politely decline. Still, Xavier placed his gift into her son’s hands and said, “My daddy gives me lots of toys to share.”

Though I’d like to say Xavier learned his confident giving from me, I’ve often withheld my resources from God and others. But when I remember that my heavenly Father gives me everything I have and need, it’s easier to share.

In the Old Testament, God commanded the Israelites to trust Him by giving a portion of all He had supplied to the Levite priests, who would in turn help others in need. When the people refused, the prophet Malachi said they were robbing the Lord (MALACHI 3:8–9). But if they gave willingly, showing they trusted the Lord’s promised provision and protection (VV 10–11), others would recognize them as God’s blessed people (V 12).

Whether we’re managing our finances, our schedules, or the gifts God entrusted to us, giving can be an act of worship. Giving freely and fearlessly can show our confidence in the care of our loving Father—the ultimate generous Giver. - XOCHITL DIXON

우리의 확실한 기초

오랫동안 내가 사는 도시 사람들은 산사태가 발생하는 지역에 주택을 짓기도 하고 사기도 했습니다. 어떤 사람들은 불안정한 땅의 위험에 대해 알고 있었지만, 또 어떤 사람들은 전혀 듣지 못했습니다. “40년에 걸친 지질학자들의 경고와 안전한 주택 건설 보장을 위해 만들어진 도시 규제”는 설명되지 않거나 무시되었습니다 (가제트 신문, 콜로라도스프링스, 2016년 4월 27일). 그들 중 많은 집들에서 참으로 아름다운 경관을 볼 수 있었지만, 집 아래의 땅에는 재앙이 진행되고 있었습니다.

고대 이스라엘의 많은 사람들은 우상에서 돌이켜 살아 계신 참된 하나님을 찾으라는 주님의 경고를 무시했습니다. 구약성경은 그들의 불순종으로 말미암은 비극적인 결과를 기록하고 있습니다. 하지만 허물어져가는 그들 주위의 세상 속에서 주님은 그들이 주께로 돌이켜 주의 길을 따르면 용서와 희망을 갖게 해주겠다는 메시지를 전하며 계속 그의 백성들에게 다가가셨습니다.

이사야 선지자는 “네 시대에 평안함이 있으며 구원과 지혜와 지식이 풍성할 것이니 여호와를 경외함이 네 보배니라”(이사야 33:6) 라고 말했습니다.

구약 시대와 마찬가지로 오늘날에도 하나님은 우리에게 삶을 쌓아나갈 기초에 대한 선택권을 주셨습니다. 우리는 우리 자신의 욕망을 따를 수도 있고, 성경과 예수 그리스도의 인격 속에 드러난 하나님의 영원한 원칙들을 받아들일 수도 있습니다. “단단한 반석이신 그리스도 위에 나는 서 있습니다. 다른 모든 곳은 가라앉는 모래입니다” (에드워드 모트).

Our Sure Foundation

For many years, people in our city built and bought homes in areas subject to landslides. Some knew about the risk of the unstable land, while others were not told. “Forty years of warnings from geologists and city regulations created to ensure safe homebuilding” were unexplained or ignored ( The Gazette, Colorado Springs, April 27, 2016). The view from many of those homes was magnificent, but the ground beneath them was a disaster in the making.

Many people in ancient Israel ignored the Lord’s warnings to turn from idols and seek Him, the true and living God. The Old Testament records the tragic results of their disobedience. Yet, with the world crumbling around them, the Lord continued reaching out to His people with a message of forgiveness and hope if they would turn to Him and follow His way.

The prophet Isaiah said, “[The LORD] will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure” (ISAIAH 33:6).

Today, as in the Old Testament era, God has given us a choice about the foundation on which we will build our lives. We can follow our own desires, or we can embrace His eternal principles revealed in the Bible and in the person of Jesus Christ. “On Christ, the solid rock, I stand—all other ground is sinking sand” (EDWARD MOTE). - DAVID C. 올바른 곳에 꽃피우기

아버지는 내게 괭이를 주시면서 “잡초란 네가 원하지 않는 곳에서 자라는 식물이란다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 나는 완두콩들 사이에 “자발적으로” 생긴 옥수수를 그대로 두고 싶었지만, 농장에서 자란 아버지는 나에게 그 옥수수를 뽑아버리라고 하셨습니다. 그 외로운 옥수수는 단지 완두콩을 질식시키고 영양분을 빼앗아가는 일만 하게 될 뿐이었습니다.

사람은 식물이 아닙니다. 우리에게는 우리 자신의 생각이 있고, 하나님이 주신 자유의지가 있습니다. 그러나 때때로 우리는 하나님이 의도하시지 않은 곳에서 꽃을 피우려고 합니다.

사울왕의 아들이며 용사인 요나단 왕자도 그렇게 할 수 있었습니다. 요나단은 왕이 될 만한 모든 조건을 갖추고 있었습니다. 그러나 그는 하나님이 다윗을 축복하시는 것을 보았고, 자신의 아버지가 질투와 자만심을 가지고 있음을 알게 되었습니다(사무엘상 18:12-15). 그래서 결코 자신의 것이 되지 않을 왕위를 거머쥐려고 하지 않고, 대신 다윗의 가장 친한 친구가 되어 그의 생명까지 구해주었습니다(19:1-6; 20:1-4).

어떤 사람들은 요나단이 너무 많은 것을 포기하였다고 말할 것입니다. 그러나 당신은 자신이 어떻게 기억되기를 원하십니까? 왕권에 집착하다가 그것을 잃어버린, 야심 있는 사울처럼 기억되기를 원하십니까, 아니면 영광스러운 예수님의 조상이 될 사람의 생명을 보호한 요나단처럼 기억되기를 원하십니까?

하나님의 계획은 언제나 우리의 계획보다 더 낫습니다. 우리는 하나님의 계획에 대항해 싸워서 잘못된 곳에 자라나는 잡초처럼 될 수도 있고, 아니면 하나님의 지시에 따름으로 하나님의 정원에 있는 무성하고 열매가 가득한 식물처럼 될 수도 있습니다. 하나님은 그 선택권을 우리에게 남겨주셨습니다.

Blooming in the Right Spot

“A weed is any plant that grows where you don’t want it,” my father said, handing me the hoe. I wanted to leave the corn plant that had “volunteered” among the peas. But Dad, who had grown up on a farm, instructed me to pull it out. That lone cornstalk would do nothing but choke the peas and rob them of nutrients.

Human beings aren’t plants—we have minds of our own and God-given free will. But sometimes we try to bloom where God doesn’t intend us to be.

King Saul’s son, the warrior-prince Jonathan, could have done that. He had every reason to expect to be king. But he saw God’s blessing on David, and he recognized the envy and pride of his own father (1 SAMUEL 18:12–15). So rather than grasping for a throne that would never be his, Jonathan became David’s closest friend, even saving his life (19:1–6; 20:1–4).

Some would say that Jonathan gave up too much. But how would we prefer to be remembered? Like the ambitious Saul, who clung to his kingdom and lost it? Or like Jonathan, who protected the life of a man who would become an honored ancestor of Jesus?

God’s plan is always better than our own. We can fight against it and resemble a misplaced weed. Or we can accept His direction and become flourishing, fruitful plants in His garden. He leaves the choice with us. - TIM GUSTAFSON
