훌륭한 유산

해리스 할아버지와 할머니는 부자는 아니었으나 사촌들과 내가 매번 추억할 만한 크리스마스를 보낼 수 있게 해주었습니다. 거기에는 언제나 풍성한 음식과 재미와 사랑이 있었습니다. 우리는 어려서부터 이 같은 축하 행사가 예수님 때문에 가능하다는 것을 알았습니다.

이 유산을 우리 자녀들에게 넘겨줄 수 있기를 원합니다. 지난 12월 크리스마스를 함께 지내기 위해 온 가족이 모였을 때, 우리는 이 훌륭한 전통이 할아버지와 할머니로부터 시작되었음을 깨달았습니다. 그들은 우리에게 금전적인 유산을 남기지는 못했지만, 정성껏 사랑과 존경과 믿음의 씨앗을 뿌려서 자손 대대로 그들의 본보기를 따를 수 있게 하셨습니다.

성경은 우리에게 디모데에게 진정한 믿음을 전해준 외할머니 로이스와 어머니 유니게에 대해 이야기해줍니다(디모데후서 1:5). 그들의 영향으로 디모데는 많은 사람들에게 복음을 전할 수 있게 준비될 수 있었습니다.

하나님과 친밀하게 삶으로써 우리는 우리가 영향을 미치는 사람들에게 줄 영적인 유산을 준비할 수 있습니다. 실제로 우리는 주님의 사랑이 그들에게 현실로 다가갈 수 있도록 우리의 시선을 그들에게 집중하고, 그들이 생각하고 행동하는 것에 관심을 보이며, 삶을 나누어야 합니다. 심지어는 우리의 즐거운 축하 행사에 그들을 초대할 수도 있습니다. 우리의 삶이 하나님의 사랑의 참 모습을 보여줄때, 우리는 오래도록 이어질 유산을 다른 사람들에게 남기는 것입니다.

A Good Inheritance

Grandpa and Grandma Harris didn’t have a lot of money, yet they managed to make each Christmas memorable for my cousins and me. There was always plenty of food, fun, and love. And from an early age we learned that it was Christ who made this celebration possible.

We want to leave the same legacy to our children. When we got together last December to share Christmas with family, we realized this wonderful tradition had started with Grandpa and Grandma. They couldn’t leave us a monetary inheritance, but they were careful to plant the seeds of love, respect, and faith so that we—their children’s children—might imitate their example.

In the Bible we read about Grandma Lois and mom Eunice, who shared with Timothy genuine faith (2 TIM. 1:5). Their influence prepared this man to share the good news with many others.

We can prepare a spiritual inheritance for those whose lives we influence by living in close communion with God. In practical ways, we make His love a reality to others when we give them our undivided attention, show interest in what they think and do, and share life with them. We might even invite them to share in our celebrations! When our lives reflect the reality of God’s love, we leave a lasting legacy for others. - KEILA OCHOA

활짝 편 두 팔

남편 댄과 내가 연로하신 부모님을 돌보기 시작한 날, 우리는 팔짱을 끼고는 마치 낭떠러지로 떨어지는 것 같은 기분을 느꼈습니다. 우리가 부모님을 돌볼 때 접하게 될 가장 힘든 일은, 하나님이 우리의 마음을 감찰하시고 새롭게 빚으셔서 이 특별한 시간에 우리로 새로운 방법으로 주님을 닮아가도록 하나님께 우리를 내어드려야 하는 것임을 그 당시 우리는 알지 못했습니다.

내가 공중에서 그대로 땅으로 떨어지는 느낌이 드는 날에는, 하나님이 나의 속마음과, 비밀들, 불안감, 자존심, 그리고 이기심들을 나에게 보여주셨습니다. 하나님은 나의 연약함을 통하여 그분의 사랑과 용서를 보여주셨습니다.

우리 담임목사님이 말했습니다. “최고의 날은 예수님 없이는 절망적일 수밖에 없는 자신의 모습을 보게 되는 날입니다. 그럴 때, 주님이 당신을 보듯 주님 안에서 완전해진 당신의 모습을 바라보십시오.” 이것은 내 삶에 있어서의 돌봄의 축복이었습니다. 하나님이 창조하신 나의 모습을 보며, 나는 돌아서서 눈물을 흘리며 주님 팔 안으로 달려가 시편기자와 같이 외쳤습니다. “하나님이여 나를 살피사 내 마음을 아옵소서”(시편 139:23).

당신이 처해 있는 상황 속에서 당신 자신의 모습을 보며, 팔을 벌려 사랑하시고 용서하시는 하나님의 품으로 달려갈 수 있기를 기도합니다.

Open Arms

The day my husband, Dan, and I began our caregiving journey with our aging parents, we linked arms and felt as if we were plunging off a cliff. We didn’t know that in the process of caregiving the hardest task we would face would be to allow our hearts to be searched and molded and to allow God to use this special time to make us like Him in new ways.

On days when I felt I was plunging toward earth in an out-of-control freefall, God showed me my agendas, my reservations, my fears, my pride, and my selfishness. He used my broken places to show me His love and forgiveness.

My pastor has said, “The best day is the day you see yourself for who you are—desperate without Christ. Then see yourself as He sees you—complete in Him.” This was the blessing of caregiving in my life. As I saw who God had created me to be, I turned and ran weeping into His arms. I cried out with the psalmist: “Search me, God, and know my heart” (PS. 139:23).

This is my prayer for you—that as you see yourself in the midst of your own circumstances, you will turn and run into the open, loving, and forgiving arms of God. - SHELLY BEACH, GUEST WRITER

매우 붐비던 런던의 새벽 통근열차 안에서, 한 승객이 길을 막고 있는 다른 승객을 밀치고 욕을 하였습니다. 이런 일은 매우 유감스럽고 어리석은 일이며 대체로 해결할 방법이 없습니다. 그러나 그날 오후에 예상치 못한 일이 벌어졌습니다. 한 사업가가 그의 소셜미디어 친구들에게 이렇게 속보를 보냈습니다. “오늘 누가 면접 보러 왔는지 알아 맞춰봐.” 그의 설명이 인터넷에 뜨자 모든 사람이 얼굴을 찡그리더니 곧 웃었습니다. 당신이 취직면접을 보러 들어갔는데 거기서 만난 면접관이 바로 당신이 아침에 밀치고 욕했던 그 사람이라는 것을 알게 된 그 순간을 상상해보십시오.

사울도 역시 그가 전혀 만날 것이라고 예상치 못했던 누군가를 만났습니다. 주님의 제자들에 대하여 여전히 위협과 살기가 등등할 때(사도행전 9:1-2), 눈을 뜰 수 없는 빛이 그를 멈춰 세웠습니다. 그리고 “사울아 사울아 네가 어찌하여 나를 박해하느냐” (4절)라는 소리가 들렸습니다. 사울이 “주님 누구시니이까”라고 묻자 그 음성은 “나는 네가 박해하는 예수라”(26:15)라고 대답했습니다.

오래 전에 예수님은 우리가 굶주린 자나 목마른 자, 나그네 된 자, 그리고 옥에 갇힌 자들을 어떻게 대하는지가 예수님과 우리의 관계를 보여준다고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 25:35-36). 누군가 우리를 모욕하거나, 아니면 우리가 다른 사람을 돕거나 해칠 때, 우리를 사랑하시는 주님께서 그것을 친히 받으시리라고 어느 누가 상상했겠습니까?

Surprise Interview

On a crowded London commuter train, an early morning rider shoved and insulted a fellow passenger who got in his way. It was the kind of unfortunate, and mindless moment that usually remains unresolved. But later that day, the unexpected happened. A business manager sent a quick message to his social media friends, “Guess who just showed up for a job interview.” When his explanation appeared on the Internet, people all over the world winced and smiled. Imagine walking into a job interview only to discover that the person who greets you is the one you had shoved and sworn at earlier that day.

Saul also ran into someone he never expected to see. While raging against a group called the Way (ACTS 9:1–2), he was stopped in his tracks by a blinding light. Then a voice said, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” (V. 4). Saul asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The One speaking to him replied, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (26:15).

Years earlier Jesus had said that how we treat the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, and the prisoner reflects our relationship to Him (MATT. 25:35–36). Who would have dreamed that when someone insults us, or when we help or hurt another, the One who loves us takes it personally? - MART DEHAAN

나는 최근 휴가 중에 면도하지 않고 턱수염을 길러 보았습니다. 친구들과 직장 동료들은 다양한 반응을 보였는데, 대부분 좋게 말해주었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 나는 턱수염을 보고는 “내가 아니야”라고 생각하고 다시 면도를 했습니다.

나는 우리가 누구이며, 왜 어떤 것들은 우리의 개성과 어울리지 않는지 생각해보았습니다. 그 주된 이유는 하나님이 우리를 개별적으로 차이를 주셨고 선호하는 것도 다르게 하셨기 때문입니다. 우리의 취미가 다 다르고, 같은 음식을 먹지 않고, 같은 교회에서 예배를 드리지 않는다고 해서 문제가 되지 않습니다. 우리 각자는 독특하고 “심히 기묘하게 지어졌습니다”(시편 139:14). 베드로는 우리가 서로 섬기기 위해 각자 독특한 은사를 받았다고 하였습니다 (베드로전서 4:10-11).

예수님의 제자들은 주님의 사역에 동참하기 전에 어떤 적성검사도 받지 않았습니다. 베드로는 매우 충동적인 성격이라 예수님이 체포되던 날 밤 하인의 귀를 잘랐습니다. 도마는 예수님의 부활을 믿기 전에 증거를 보여 달라고 요구했습니다. 그러나 주님은 그들이 부족한 사람이라고 거절하시지 않고, 주님의 사역을 위해 그들을 새로운 모습으로 빚어주셨습니다.

우리가 주님을 어떻게 가장 잘 섬길 수 있는지 판단해볼 때, 우리의 재능과 성격을 고려해 보면서 때로는 “내가 아니야”라고 말하는 것이 현명한 일입니다. 하나님은 우리를 안전지대 밖으로 부르실 지도
모릅니다. 그러나 그것은 그분의 선하신 목적에 헌신할 수 있도록 우리의 독특한 재능과 성격을 개발하기 위해 그렇게 하시는 것입니다. 우리의 모습 그대로 주님께서 사용하실 수 있도록 내어드릴 때 그분의 창조성을 영화롭게 하는 것입니다.

It’s Not Me

While on vacation recently, I gave my razor a rest and grew a beard. Various responses came from friends and co-workers—and most were complimentary. One day, however, I looked at the beard and decided, “It’s not me.” So out came the razor.

I’ve been thinking about the idea of who we are and why one thing or another does not fit our personality. Primarily, it’s because God has bestowed us with individual differences and preferences. It’s okay that we don’t all like the same hobbies, eat the same foods, or worship in the same church. We are each uniquely and “wonderfully made” (PS. 139:14). Peter noted that we are uniquely gifted in order to serve each other (1 PETER 4:10–11).

Jesus’s disciples didn’t check their characteristics at the door before entering His world. Peter was so impulsive that he cut off a servant’s ear the night Jesus was arrested. Thomas insisted on evidence before believing Christ had risen. The Lord didn’t reject them simply because they had some growing to do. He molded and shaped them for His service.

When discerning how we might best serve the Lord, it’s wise to consider our talents and characteristics and to sometimes say, “It’s not me.” God may call us out of our comfort zone, but He does so to develop our unique gifts and personalities to serve His good purposes. We honor His creative nature when we permit Him to use us as we are. - DAVE BRANON

도와주세요!

국제 조난신호인 “메이데이”는 항상 한 번에 3번씩 “메이데이, 메이데이, 메이데이”라고 반복하기 때문에 생명이 위협받는 비상상황이라는 것을 확실히 알 수 있습니다. 이 신호는 런던의 크로이던 공항에서 일하던 선임 통신사 프레드릭 스탠리 목포드에 의해 1923년에 만들어졌습니다. 그 공항은 지금은 사용되지 않지만, 한때는 파리의 르부르제 공항으로부터 많은 비행기가 오가곤 했습니다. 국립 해 양 박물관에 따르면 목포드는 “도와주세요”라 는 의미의 프랑스어 ‘마이데즈’라는 말에서 ‘메이데이’ 를 만들었다고 합니다.

다윗 왕은 그의 일생을 통해 피할 길이 보이지 않는 목숨이 위태로운 상황들을 많이 만났습니다. 그러나 우리는 시편 86편에서, 다윗의 생애 중 가장 어두웠던 시기에도 그가 하나님을 신뢰했던 것을 봅니다. “여호와여 나의 기도에 귀를 기울이시고 내가 간구하는 소리를 들으소서 나의 환난 날에 내가 주께 부르짖으리니 주께서 내게 응답하시리이다”(6-7절).

다윗은 하나님께 그의 길을 인도해주시기를 간구할 때 목전의 위험 그 너머도 바라보았습니다. “여호와여 주의 도를 내게 가르치소서 내가 주의 진리에 행하오리니 일심으로 주의 이름을 경외하게 하소서”(11절). 다윗은 위기가 지나가도 계속 하나님과 동행하기를 원했습니다.

Mayday!

The international distress signal “Mayday” is always repeated three times in a row—“Mayday-Mayday-Mayday”—so the situation will be clearly understood as a life-threatening emergency. The word was created in 1923 by Frederick Stanley Mockford, a senior radio officer at London’s Croydon Airport. That nowclosed facility once had many flights to and from Le Bourget Airport in Paris. According to the National Maritime Museum, Mockford coined Mayday from the French word m’aidez, which means, “help me.”

Throughout King David’s life, he faced life-threatening situations for which there seemed to be no way out. Yet, we read in Psalm 86 that during his darkest hours, David’s confidence was in the Lord. “Hear my prayer, Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. When I am in distress, I call to you, because you answer me” (VV. 6–7).

David also saw beyond the immediate danger by asking God to lead his steps. “Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name” (V. 11). When the crisis was past, he wanted to keep walking with God.

The most difficult situations we face can become doorways to a deeper relationship with our Lord. This begins when we call on Him to help us in our trouble, and also to lead us each day in His way. - DAVID MCCASLAND

스티븐이라고 불리는 한 젊은 아프리카 난민 청년은 국적이 없습니다. 그는 자기가 아마도 모잠비크나 짐바브웨에서 태어난 것으로 추측합니다. 그는 아버지가 누구인지 몰랐으며 어머니마저 여의었습니다. 그의 어머니는 내전을 피해 이 나라 저 나라를 돌아다니며 노점 행상을 했습니다. 신분증도 없고 출생지를 증명할 수 없었던 스티븐은 영국의 한 경찰서로 들어가 자기를 구속해달라고 했습니다. 그에게는 감옥에 있는 것이 시민의 권리나 혜택도 없이 길거리에서 사는 것보다 낫다고 여겨졌습니다.

바울은 에베소교인들에게 편지를 쓸 때 나라 없이 사는 어려움을 생각하고 있었습니다. 그의 편지를 받는 비유대인들은 이방인과 외인으로 사는 것이 어떤 것인지를 알고 있었습니다(2:12). 그들은 그리스도 안에서 생명과 소망을 발견한 후에야(1:13) 천국 백성이 된다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 알게 되었습니다(마태복음5:3). 그리고 예수님 안에서, 주님이 보여주신 하나님 아버지께서 아시고 보호하신다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지도 알게 되었습니다 (마태복음 6:31-33).

우리가 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 하나님 가족의 일원이 되었다는 것을 매일 깨닫고, 하나님의 집에 살면서 누리는 권리와 혜택을 이해하면서 안전하게 살 수 있도록 우리 하나님께서 도와주시기를 소원합니다.

Home

A young African refugee who goes by the name of Steven is a man without a country. He thinks he may have been born in Mozambique or Zimbabwe. But he never knew his father and lost his mother. She fled civil war, traveling country to country as a street vendor. Without ID and unable to prove his place of birth, Steven walked into a British police station, asking to be arrested. Jail seemed better to Steven than trying to exist on the streets without the rights and benefits of citizenship.

The plight of living without a country was on Paul’s mind as he wrote his letter to the Ephesians. His non-Jewish readers knew what it was like to live as aliens and outsiders (2:12). Only since finding life and hope in Christ (1:13) had they discovered what it meant to belong to the kingdom of heaven (MATT. 5:3). In Jesus, they learned what it means to be known and cared for by the Father He came to reveal (MATT. 6:31–33).

Paul realized, however, that as the past fades from view, a short memory can cause us to forget that, while hope is the new norm, despair was the old reality.

May our God help us to live in security—to know each day the belonging that we have as members of His family is by faith in Jesus Christ and to understand the rights and benefits of having our home in Him. - MART DEHAAN

실수였습니다

“실수였습니다.” 한 기업의 최고경영자가 회사가 연관된 불법행위를 논의하는 자리에서 그렇게 말했습니다. 그는 후회하는 모습을 보이기는 했지만, 책임 소재에 대해서는 거리를 두면서 개인적으로 아무런 잘못을 인정하지 않았습니다.

어쩔 수 없이 생기는 “실수”들이 있습니다. 예를 들면, 잘못된 방향으로 운전하는 것, 타이머를 맞춰놓는 것을 잊어 저녁 음식을 태우는 것, 수표장부의 잔액을 잘못 계산하는 것 등입니다. 그러나 이에 훨씬 지나쳐서, 하나님이 죄라고 하시는 고의적인 행위들이 있습니다. 하나님이 아담과 하와에게 왜 불순종했느냐고 물으셨을 때 그들은 즉각 서로를 탓하였습니다(창세기 3:8-13). 아론은 이스라엘 백성들이 사막에서 황금송아지를 만들어 숭배했을 때 자신은 아무런 책임도 지지 않았습니다. 그는 모세에게 “그들이 그것(금)을 내게로 가져왔기로 내가 불에 던졌더니 이 송아지가 나왔나이다”(출애굽기 32:24)라고 변명했습니다.

그도 차라리 “실수였습니다”라고 말하는 게 더 나았을 것입니다. 때로는 자신의 실수를 인정하는 것보다 남을 탓하기가 더 쉬워 보입니다. 하지만 이것 못지않게 위험한 것은 우리의 죄를 근본적으로 인정하지 않고 “단순한 실수”로 돌리는 것입니다.

그러나 우리가 우리 죄를 인정하고 자백함으로써 책임을 진다면, “그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 모든 불의에서 우리를 깨끗하게 하실 것입니다”(요한1서 1:9). 우리 하나님은 그분의 자녀들에게 용서와 회복을 베풀어주십니다.

하나님께 용서를 받는 첫 단계는 우리에게 용서가 필요하다는 것을 인정하는 것이다.

Mistakes Were Made

“Mistakes were made,” said the CEO as he discussed the illegal activity his company had been involved in. He looked regretful, yet he kept blame at arm’s length and couldn’t admit he had personally done anything wrong.

Some “mistakes” are just mistakes: driving in the wrong direction, forgetting to set a timer and burning dinner, miscalculating your checkbook balance. But then there are the deliberate deeds that go far beyond—God calls those sin. When God questioned Adam and Eve about why they had disobeyed Him, they quickly tried to shift the blame to another (GEN. 3:8–13). Aaron took no personal responsibility when the people built a golden calf to worship in the desert. He explained to Moses, “[The people] gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!” (EX. 32:24).

He might as well have muttered, “Mistakes were made.” Sometimes it seems easier to blame someone else rather than admitting our own failings. Equally dangerous is to try to minimize our sin by calling it “just a mistake” instead of acknowledging its true nature.

But when we take responsibility—acknowledging our sin and confessing it—the One who “is faithful and just . . . will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 JOHN 1:9). Our God offers His children forgiveness and restoration. - CINDY HESS KASPER

초상화 그리기

영국 런던의 국립 초상화 박물관은 지난 수백 년간의 보물 같은 그림들을 소장하고 있는데, 그 가운데 윈스턴 처칠의 초상화가 166점, 윌리엄 셰익스피어의 초상화가 94점, 조지 워싱턴의 초상화가 20점이 있습니다. 그런데 초상화가 오래된 것일수록 우리는 ‘이 사람이 정말 이 그림처럼 생겼을까?’ 하는 의문을 갖기도 합니다.

예를 들어, 그곳에 스코틀랜드의 애국자 윌리엄 월리스(대략 1270-1305)의 초상화가 8점 있지만, 우리에게는 이와 대조해볼 수 있는 사진들이 아예 없습니다. 화가들이 월리스를 정말 정확하게 그렸는지 어떻게 알 수 있을까요?

이와 유사한 일이 예수님을 닮는 일에서도 일어날 수 있습니다. 예수님을 믿는 사람들은 자신도 모르는 사이에 예수님의 모습을 다른 사람들에게 남깁니다. 붓과 물감으로가 아니라 태도나 행동이나 인간관계를 통해서 말입니다. 우리는 예수님을 닮은 모습을 보여주는 초상화를 그리고 있습니까? 그것은 바울 사도의 관심사이기도 했습니다. 그는 “너희 안에 이 마음을 품으라 곧 그리스도 예수의 마음이니”(빌립보서 2:5)라고 썼습니다. 그는 주님을 정확하게 보여주고 싶은 간절한 마음에, 주님을 따르는 자들에게 다른 사람들을 향해 예수님의 겸손과 희생과 긍휼을 나타내 보여주라고 촉구하였습니다.

“사람들은 우리를 통해서만 예수님을 본다.”라는 말이 있습니다. 우리가 “겸손한 마음으로 각각 [우리보다] 남을 낫게 여길”(3절) 때, 예수님의 마음과 태도를 세상에 보여주게 될 것입니다.

Painting a Portrait

The National Portrait Gallery in London, England, houses a treasure of paintings from across the centuries, including 166 images of Winston Churchill, 94 of William Shakespeare, and 20 of George Washington. With the older portraits, we may wonder: Is that what these individuals really looked like?

For instance, there are 8 paintings of Scottish patriot William Wallace (c. 1270–1305), but we obviously don’t have photographs to compare them to. How do we know if the artists accurately represented Wallace?

Something similar might be happening with the likeness of Jesus. Without realizing it, those who believe in Him are leaving an impression of Him on others. Not with brushes and oils, but with attitudes, actions, and relationships. Are we painting a portrait that represents the likeness of His heart? This was the concern of the apostle Paul. “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus,” he wrote (PHIL. 2:5). With a desire to accurately represent our Lord, he urged His followers to reflect the humility, self-sacrifice, and compassion of Jesus for others.

It has been said, “We are the only Jesus some people will ever see.” As we “in humility value others above [ourselves]” (V. 3), we will show the world the heart and attitude of Jesus Himself. - BILL CROWDER

파도를 다스리는 분

덴마크의 크누트 대왕은 11세기 당시 세상에서 가장 강력한 사람중의 하나였습니다. 전해지는 유명한 일화로, 그는 밀물이 일때 바닷가에 의자를 갖다놓게 하고는, 바다를 향해 “너는 나의 명령에 복종해야 한다. 내가 명하노니, 나의 땅으로 올라와 네 주인의 발이나 옷을 적시지 말라.”고 호령했습니다. 그러나 바닷물은 계속해서 밀려와 왕의 발을 적셨습니다.

이 이야기는 흔히 크누트 대왕의 교만에 초점을 맞춘 듯하나 사실은 겸손에 관한 이야기입니다. 크누트 대왕은 말합니다. “왕의 능력은 아무것도 아니라는 것을 온 세상에 알려라. 하나님만이 하늘과 땅과 바다를 복종시키신다.” 크누트 대왕의 이야기의 초점은 이것입니다. ‘하나님만이 전능하신 유일한 분이시다.’

욥도 같은 것을 발견했습니다. 땅의 기초를 놓으시고(욥기 38:4-7) 아침으로 시작하시고 밤으로 끝내시며(12-13절), 눈을 쌓아두시고 별들을 운행하시는(22,31-33절) 분에 비교하면, 우리는 아주 작은 존재입니다. 파도를 다스리시는 분은 오직 한 분 통치자이시지, 우리가 아닙니다(11절; 마태복음 8:23-27).

크누트 대왕의 이야기는 우리가 스스로 너무 똑똑하고 잘났다는 생각이 들 때 떠올리면 좋습니다. 바닷가에 가서 밀물더러 멈추라고 해보거나 해를 향해 물러나라고 명령해보십시오. 우리는 곧 누가 진정으로 지고하신 분인가를 깨닫게 되고, 그분이 우리를 다스려주시는것에 감사하게 될 것입니다.

Ruler of the Waves

King Canute was one of the most powerful men on earth in the eleventh century. In a now-famous tale, it is said that he ordered his chair to be placed on the shore as the tide was rising. “You are subject to me,” he said to the sea. “I command you, therefore, not to rise on to my land, nor to wet the clothing or limbs of your master.” But the tide continued to rise, drenching the king’s feet.

This story is often told to draw attention to Canute’s pride. Actually, it’s a story about humility. “Let all the world know that the power of kings is empty,” Canute says next, “save Him by whose will heaven, earth and sea obey.” Canute’s story makes a point: God is the only all-powerful One.

Job discovered the same. Compared to the One who laid Earth’s foundations (JOB 38:4–7), who commands morning to appear and night to end (VV. 12–13), who stocks the storehouses of the snow and directs the stars (VV. 22, 31–33), we are small. There is only one Ruler of the waves, and it is not us (V. 11; MATT. 8:23–27).

Canute’s story is good to reenact when we begin feeling too clever or proud about ourselves. Walk to the beach and tell the tide to halt or try commanding the sun to step aside. We’ll soon remember who is really supreme and thank Him for ruling our lives. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

완벽하게 사랑하기

딸에 관한 문제를 함께 나눌 때 그녀의 목소리는 떨리고 있었습니다. 이 엄마는 문제아들을 친구로 사귀는 십대 딸을 염려하여 딸의 핸드폰을 빼앗고 딸이 가는 곳마다 따라다녔습니다. 그들의 관계는 점점 더 악화되고 있었습니다.

내가 그 딸과 대화를 해보니, 아이는 엄마를 진심으로 사랑하고 있으나 과잉보호로 괴로워하고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그녀는 자유로워지길 바라고 있었습니다.

완벽하지 못한 존재인 우리 모두는 인간관계 때문에 힘들어합니다. 우리가 부모이든 자녀이든, 결혼을 했든 하지 않았든, 적절한 시간에 적절한 말과 행동을 하면서 사랑을 바르게 표현하려고 애를 씁니다. 우리는 평생을 사랑 안에서 자라갑니다.

고린도전서 13장에서 바울 사도는 완전한 사랑이 어떤 것인지를 설명하고 있습니다. 그의 기준은 아주 좋아 보이지만, 그 사랑을 실천하기가 전적으로 불가능해 보이기도 합니다. 하지만 다행히도, 우리의 본보기로 예수님이 계십니다. 주님은 여러 다양한 어려움들과 문제들을 가진 사람들을 만나면서 우리에게 완전한 사랑에 대한 실제 모습을 보여주셨습니다. 우리가 주님과 동행하면서 언제나 주의 사랑 안에 거하고 우리 마음을 주의 말씀으로 채울 때, 우리는 점점 더 주님을 닮은 모습을 나타내게 될 것입니다. 우리는 여전히 실수하지만, 하나님은 그 실수들을 회복하셔서 모든 상황에서 선을 이끌어내실 수있습니다. 하나님의 사랑은 “모든 것을 덮어주며” “결코 없어지지 않기” 때문입니다(7-8절).

Loving Perfectly

Her voice shook as she shared the problems she was having with her daughter. Worried about her teenager’s questionable friends, this concerned mum confiscated her daughter’s mobile phone and chaperoned her everywhere. Their relationship seemed only to go from bad to worse.

When I spoke with the daughter, I discovered that she loves her mum dearly but is suffocating under a smothering love. She longs to break free.

As imperfect beings, we all struggle in our relationships. Whether we are a parent or child, single or married, we grapple with expressing love the right way, saying and doing the right thing at the right time. We grow in love throughout our lifetime. In 1 Corinthians 13 the apostle Paul outlines what perfect love looks like. His standard sounds wonderful, but putting that love into practice can be absolutely daunting. Thankfully, we have Jesus as our example. As He interacted with people with varying needs and issues, He showed us what perfect love looks like in action. As we walk with Him, keeping ourselves in His love and steeping our mind in His Word, we’ll reflect more and more of His likeness. We’ll still make mistakes, but God is able to redeem them and cause good to come out of every situation, for His love “always protects” and it “never fails” (VV. 7–8). - POH FANG CHIA
