인생을 위한 훈련
나의 장거리 달리기 훈련은 잘 진행되지 않았고, 특히 가장 최근에 했던 달리기는 실망스러웠습니다. 그 달리기 중 반은 걸었으며, 한 곳에서는 주저앉기까지 했습니다. 나는 마치 기본 시험에 실패한 느낌이 들었습니다.
그때 나는 이것이 바로 훈련의 핵심이라는 것을 기억했습니다. 그것은 통과해야할 시험도 아니었고, 달성해야할 목표 점수가 있는 것도 아니었습니다. 오히려 그것은 단지 나의 인내력을 향상시키기 위하여 내가 반복적으로 견디어내야 할 과정이었습니다.
어쩌면 당신은 지금 당면하고 있는 시련 때문에 상심하고 있을지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 하나님은 우리의 영적인 근육과 인내력을 강화시키기 위해 우리에게 이런 시험의 시간들을 지나게 하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 주님께 의지하도록 가르치시고, 거룩해지도록 성결케 하셔서, 우리가 더욱 더 주님을 닮아가게 하십니다.
시편기자가 이스라엘 백성들이 노예 생활과 유배 생활로 고난당한 것을 하나님께서 불과 물을 통해 그들을 단련하신(시편 66:10-12) 것으로 보고 찬양할 수 있었던 것도 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다. 하나님은 그들을 보호하시고 매우 풍요한 곳으로 인도하셨을 뿐 아니라, 그런 과정 중에 그들을 성결하게 하셨습니다.
우리는 시험을 겪을 때, 힘과 인내를 위해 하나님께 의지할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 가장 힘든 순간들을 통하여 우리를 단련시키십니다.

Training for Life
My training for the long-distance race was going badly, and the latest run was particularly disappointing. I walked half the time and even had to sit down at one point. It felt like I had failed a mini-test.
Then I remembered that this was the whole point of training. It was not a test to pass, nor was there a grade I had to achieve. Rather, it was something I simply had to go through, again and again, to improve my endurance.
Perhaps you feel bad about a trial you are facing. God allows us to undergo these times of testing to toughen our spiritual muscles and endurance. He teaches us to rely on Him, and purifies us to be holy, so that we become more like Christ.
No wonder the psalmist could praise God for refining the Israelites through fire and water (PS 68:10–12) as they suffered in slavery and exile. God not only preserved them and brought them to a place of
great abundance, but also purified them in the process.
As we go through testing, we can rely on God for strength and perseverance. He is refining us through our toughest moments. - LESLIE KOH

평안과 신뢰
나는 여섯 살 때 형들과 처음으로 롤러코스터를 타 보았습니다. 우리가 타고 있는 롤러코스터가 빠른 속도로 방향을 틀자마자, 나는 “당장 멈춰! 나 내릴 거야!”라고 소리 지르기 시작하였습니다. 물론 롤러코스터는 서지 않았고, 나는 그것이 멈출 때까지 “새파랗게 질리도록” 단단히 움켜잡고 있었습니다.
가끔은 인생이 “내리막길”이나 전혀 보이지 않는 급커브길이 있 는 , 원치 않는 롤러코스터를 타는 것과 같다고 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 생각지도 않았던 어려움이 닥칠 때, 우리의 최선의 의지는 하나님께 우리의 신뢰를 두는 것이라고 성경은 상기시켜줍니다. 이사야 선지자는 나라가 침략으로 위협을 당하던 혼란한 시기에, 성령의 감동으로 다음과 같은 주님으로부터의 능력 있는 약속을 알게 되었습니다. “주께서 심지가 견고한 자를 평강하고 평강하도록 지키시리니 이는 그가 주를 신뢰함이니이다”(이사야 26:3).
우리가 “모든 지각에 뛰어난”(빌립보서 4:7) 주님께로 향할 때, 구주께서는 우리에게 평강을 주십니다. 나는 유방암으로 힘들어하던 어떤 분의 말을 결코 잊을 수 없을 것입니다. 어느 날 저녁 몇 명의 교회 사람들이 모여 그녀를 위한 기도를 마쳤을 때 그녀는 이렇게 말했습니다. “앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 모르지만, 오늘 저녁 주님이 우리와 함께 하셨기 때문에 저는 괜찮을 거라고 믿어요.”

Peace and Trust
When I was six years old I rode a roller coaster for the first time with my older brothers. As soon as we hit a turn at a high speed I started to yell: “Stop this thing right now ! I want to get off!” Of course the roller coaster didn’t stop, and I had to “white knuckle” it, hanging on tight for the rest of the ride.
Sometimes life can feel like an unwanted roller coaster ride, with “downhill” drops and hairpin curves we never see coming. When unexpected difficulties occur, the Bible reminds us that our best recourse is to place our trust in God. It was in a tumultuous time when invasion threatened his country that the prophet Isaiah, inspired by the Spirit, discerned this powerful promise from the Lord: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (ISA 26:3).
The peace our Savior gives us as we turn to Him “transcends all understanding” (PHIL 4:7). I will never forget the words of a woman who was struggling with breast cancer. After a group from our church prayed for her one evening, she said, “I don’t know what will happen, but I know that I’ll be okay, because the Lord was here with us tonight.”
Life will have its difficulties, but our Savior, who loves us more than life, is greater than them all. - JAMES BANKS

유명한 작가이며 대학교수인 데이빗 포스터 월리스는 학생들의 형편없는 문장실력에 어이가 없어서 어떻게 하면 학생들의 실력을 향상시켜줄 수 있을까 생각했습니다. 바로 그 순간, 그는 자신을 향한 놀라운 질문에 직면하게 되었습니다. 그는 자기처럼 “혼자 우쭐대고, 속이 좁고, 독선적이며, 잘난 체 하는” 사람의 말을 학생들이 왜 듣겠는가 하고 스스로 질문했습니다. 그는 바로 자신에게 교만의 문제가 있다는 것을 알았습니다.

예수님은 왜 그렇게 하셨을까요? 왜 우리 같은 사람들을 끝까지 섬기셨을까요? 요한 사도가 핵심을 지적합니다. 그것은 사랑 때문입니다! “그가 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으니 우리가 이로써 사랑을 알고.” 그러고 나서 요한 사도는 그 핵심을 이렇게 결론내립니다. “우리도 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅하니라”(요한1서 3:16).

The Professor’s Confession
Horrified by his students’ poor writing habits, renowned author and college professor David Foster Wallace considered how he might improve their skills. That’s when a startling question confronted him. The professor had to ask himself why a student would listen to someone “as smug, narrow, self-righteous, [and] condescending” as he was. He knew he had a problem with pride.
That professor could and did change, but he could never become one of his students. Yet when Jesus came to Earth, He showed us what humility looks like by becoming one of us. Stepping across all
kinds of boundaries, Jesus made Himself at home everywhere by serving, teaching, and doing the will of His Father.
Even as He was being crucified, Jesus prayed for forgiveness for His executioners (LUKE 23:34). Straining for every anguished breath, He still granted eternal life to a criminal dying with Him (VV 42–43).
Why would Jesus do that? Why would He serve people like us to the very end? The apostle John gets to the point. Out of love! He writes, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.” Then he drives that point home. “And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 JOHN 3:16).
Jesus showed us that His love eradicates our pride, our smugness, our condescension. And He did it in the most powerful way possible. He gave His life. - TIM GUSTAFSON

노조미 희망
2011년에 진도 9의 지진으로 발생했던 쓰나미는 거의 19,000 명의 인명을 앗아가고 도쿄 북동지방의 주택 230,000채를 파괴했습니다. 그 재해 이후, 지속 가능한 수입과 커뮤니티, 존엄성, 그리고 하나님께서 주시는 소망을 주기 위해 “희망” 이라는 일본어를 딴 ‘노조미 사업계획’이 수립되었습니다.
노조미 여인들은 집과 가구의 잔해들을 채로 걸러서 부서진 도자기조각들을 찾아내고 사포질을 한 후 틀에 넣어 보석형태의 장신구를 만들어냈습니다. 이 보석 장신구 들은 전 세계에 판매되어 여인들의 생계 수단이 되는 한편, 그리스도를 믿는 그들의 신앙을 나누는 상징이 되었습니다.
신약시대에는 의외로 보잘 것 없는 진흙 그릇 안에 귀중한 물건들을 숨겨두곤 했습니다. 바울 사도는 질그릇 같이 인간적으로 나약한 신자들 안에 어떻게 복음의 보물이 들어있는지를 묘사하고 있습니다(고린도후서 4:7). 그는 빈약하고 때로는 부서지기도 하는 우리 인생의 그릇들이 우리의 불완전한 모습과 비교되는 하나님의 능력을 실제로 보여줄 수 있다고 말합니다.
하나님께서 우리 삶의 불완전하고 부서진 조각들 안에 거하실 때, 주님의 능력으로 인한 치유의 소망이 사람들에게 더 잘 드러납니다. 주님께서 우리 마음을 치유하실 때 종종 흉터를 남기는 것은 사실입니다. 그러나 아마도 우리가 배워가면서 만들어지는 그런 선들은 우리의 존재에 새겨지는 판화가 되어 주님의 성품을 사람들에게 더 잘 보이게 해줄 것입니다.

Nozomi Hope
In 2011, a magnitude 9 earthquake and a resulting tsunami took nearly 19,000 lives and destroyed 230,000 homes in the region northeast of Tokyo. In its aftermath, The Nozomi Project, named for the Japanese word for “hope,” was born to provide sustainable income, community, dignity, and hope in a God who provides.
Nozomi women sift through the rubble of homes and furnishings to discover broken china shards that they sand and insert into fittings to form jewelry. The jewelry is sold around the world, providing a livelihood for the women while sharing symbols of their faith in Christ.
In New Testament times, it was customary to hide valuables in the unlikely vessels of simple clay pots. Paul describes how the treasure of the gospel is contained in the human frailty of followers of Christ: jars of clay (2 COR 4:7). He suggests that the meager—and even at times broken—vessels of our lives actually can reveal God’s power in contrast to our imperfections.
When God inhabits the imperfect and broken pieces in our lives, the healing hope of His power is often more visible to others. Yes, His repair work in our hearts often leaves the scars of cracks. But perhaps those lines from our learning are the etchings in our beings that make His character more visible to others. - ELISA MORGAN

Nozomi women sift through the rubble of homes and furnishings to discover broken china shards that they sand and insert into fittings to form jewelry. The jewelry is sold around the world, providing a livelihood for the women while sharing symbols of their faith in Christ.
In New Testament times, it was customary to hide valuables in the unlikely vessels of simple clay pots. Paul describes how the treasure of the gospel is contained in the human frailty of followers of Christ: jars of clay (2 COR 4:7). He suggests that the meager—and even at times broken—vessels of our lives actually can reveal God’s power in contrast to our imperfections.
When God inhabits the imperfect and broken pieces in our lives, the healing hope of His power is often more visible to others. Yes, His repair work in our hearts often leaves the scars of cracks. But perhaps those lines from our learning are the etchings in our beings that make His character more visible to others. - ELISA MORGAN

A “New Man”
As a group of teenagers visited a home for the elderly in Montego Bay, Jamaica, one young woman noticed a lonely looking man at the end of the room. He appeared to have little left in this world but a bed to sleep on—a bed from which he could not move because of his disability.
The teen began right away to share the story of God’s love for us and read some Bible passages to him. “As I shared with him,” she would say later, “I started to feel his eagerness to hear more.” Responding to his interest, she explained the wonder of Jesus’s sacrificial death for us. “It was hard for this man, who had no hope and no family,” she recalled, “to understand that Someone he’s never met would love him enough to die on the cross for his sins.”
She told him more about Jesus—and then about the promise of heaven (including a new body) for all who believe. He asked her, “Will you dance with me up there?” She saw him begin to imagine himself free of his worn-out body and crippling limitations.
When he said he wanted to trust Jesus as his Savior, she helped him pray a prayer of forgiveness and faith. When she asked him if she could get a picture with him, he replied, “If you help me sit up. I’m a new man.”
Praise God for the life-changing, hope-giving, available-to-all gospel of Jesus Christ! It offers new life for all who trust Him (COL 1:5, 23). - DAVE BRANON

우리 부모님은 대공황 시기였던 1933년에 결혼하셨습니다. 우리 부부는 제2차 세계대전 후 출산율이 급격히 증가하던 시기에 태어난 베이비붐 세대입니다. 네 명의 딸들은 70년대와 80년대에 태어난 X와 Y세대입니다. 이렇게 다른 시대에 성장했기 때문에 우리가 많은 부분에서 서로 의견이 다른 것은 놀라운 일이 아닙니다.
세대에 따라 삶의 경험과 가치관들이 현저하게 다릅니다. 이것은 예수님을 따르는 사람들 사이에서도 마찬가지입니다. 그러나 우리가 어떤 옷을 입고 어떤 음악을 좋아하든지, 우리의 영적인 관계는 그런
차이들보다 더 강력합니다.
하나님을 찬양하는 장대한 노래인 시편 145편은 우리가 믿음으로 서로 연결되어 있음을 선언합니다. “대대로 주께서 행하시는 일을 크게 찬양하며 주의 능한 일을 선포하리로다...... 그들이 주의 크신 은혜를 기념하여 말하며 주의 의를 노래하리이다” (4,7절). 나이와 경험이 아주 다양한 가운데서도 우리는 주님을 경배하며 함께 모입니다. “그들이 주의 나라의 영광을 말하며 주의 업적을 일러서”(11절).

All Generations
My parents married in 1933 during the Great Depression. My wife and I are Baby Boomers, part of the dramatic increase in births following World War II. Our four daughters, born in the seventies and eighties, belong to Generations X and Y. Growing up in such different times, it’s not surprising that we have different opinions about many things!
Generations differ widely in their life experiences and values. And this is true among followers of Jesus. But no matter what we wear or the kind of music we enjoy, our spiritual connection is stronger than those differences.
Psalm 145, a mighty song of praise to God, proclaims our bond of faith. “One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts. . . . They celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness” (VV 4, 7). Within a great diversity of age and experience, we come together by honoring the Lord. “They tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might” (V 11).
While differences and preferences could divide us, shared faith in Jesus Christ the Lord brings us together in mutual trust, encouragement, and praise. Whatever our age and outlook, we need each other! No matter which generation we belong to, we can learn from each other and together honor the Lord—“So that all people may know of [His] mighty acts and the glorious splendor of [His] kingdom” (V 12). - DAVID MCCASLAND

전능하신 하나님의 임재 앞으로 가고 있다는 것을 알았기에 희생제물을 가지고 회막 안에 들어갈 때마다 이스라엘 백성들이 얼마나 두려워했을지 나는 상상할 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님께서 모세를 통해 그들에게 메시지를 전달할 때마다 그들이 느꼈을 경이로움도 상상할 수 있습니다.
오늘날 우리는 예수님의 희생이 하나님과 우리 사이의 장벽을 허물었다는 것을 알기 때문에 확신을 갖고 하나님께 바로 나아갈 수 있습니다(히브리서 12:22-23). 우리 한 사람 한 사람은 우리가 원할 때는 언제나 하나님께 이야기할 수 있고, 하나님의 말씀을 읽으면서 하나님의 음성을 직접 들을 수 있습니다. 우리는 이스라엘 백성들이 오직 꿈에서나 그리던 직접적인 만남을 누립니다. 주님의 사랑 받는 자녀로서 매일 하나님께 나아갈 수 있는 경이로운 특권을 당연하게 여기지 말고 소중히 여기기를 바랍니다.

Privileged Access
Even though it was just a replica, the tabernacle set up in southern Israel was awe-inspiring. Built life-size and as close as possible to the specifications laid out in Exodus 25–27 (without actual gold and acacia wood, of course), it stood tall in the Negev desert.
When our tour group was taken through the “Holy Place” and into the “Most Holy Place” to see the “ark,” some of us actually hesitated. Wasn’t this the holiest place, where only the high priest was allowed to enter? How could we enter it so casually?
I can imagine how fearful the Israelites must have felt as they approached the tent of meeting with their sacrifices each time, knowing that they were coming into the presence of the Almighty God. And the wonder they must have felt, whenever God had a message for them, delivered through Moses.
Today, you and I can come straight to God with confidence, knowing that Jesus’s sacrifice has torn down the barrier between us and God (HEB 12:22–23). Each of us can talk to God any time we want, and hear from Him directly when we read His Word. We enjoy a direct access that the Israelites could only dream of. May we never take it for granted and cherish this awesome privilege of coming to the Father as His beloved children every day. - LESLIE KOH

용서 받았다!
놈 쿡이라는 내 친구는 퇴근 후 집에 도착해서 가끔 그의 가족을 놀라게 합니다. 현관문을 들어서면서 “너는 용서받았어!”하고 소리치곤 하니까요. 그의 가족들이 그에게 용서를 빌어야할 잘못을 저질러서 그런 것이 아닙니다. 가족들이 하루를 보내면서 아마도 죄를 지었겠지만, 하나님의 은혜로 다 용서받았다는 것을 상기시켜주려는 것이었습니다.
요한 사도는 은혜에 대해 이런 기록을 남기고 있습니다. “그가 빛 가운데 계신 것 같이 우리도 빛 가운데 행하면 우리가 서로 사귐이 있고 그 아들 예수의 피가 우리를 모든 죄에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요 만일 우리가 죄가 없다고 말하면 스스로 속이고 또 진리가 우리 속에 있지 아니할 것이요 만일 우리가 우리 죄를 자백하면 그는 미쁘시고 의로우사 우리 죄를 사하시며 우리를 모든 불의에서 깨끗하게 하실 것이요”(요한1서 1:7-9).

Forgiven!
My friend Norm Cook sometimes had a surprise for his family when he arrived home from work. He would walk through the front door, and shout, “You’re forgiven!” It wasn’t that family members had wronged him and needed his forgiveness. He was reminding them that though they doubtless had sinned throughout the day, they were by God’s grace fully forgiven.
The apostle John supplies this note about grace: “If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin [no inclination to sin], we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 JOHN 1:7–9).
To “walk in the light” is a metaphor for following Jesus. Imitating Jesus with the Spirit’s help, John insists, is the sign that we have joined with the apostles in the fellowship of faith. We are authentic Christians. But, he continues, let’s not be deceived: We will make wrong choices at times. Nevertheless, grace is given in full measure: We can take what forgiveness we need.
Not perfect; just forgiven by Jesus! That’s the good word for today. - DAVID ROPER

좋은 동반자
양로원에 계시던 그 할머니는 아무에게도 말을 걸지 않았고, 무엇을 부탁하지도 않았습니다. 삐걱거리는 오래된 흔들의자를 흔들며, 단지 존재하고 있는 것처럼 보였습니다. 찾아오는 사람도 별로 없어서 한 젊은 간호사가 휴식 시간을 이용하여 그 할머니를 종종 찾아가곤 했습니다. 말을 걸려고 질문을 던지는 대신, 그 간호사는그냥 다른 흔들의자를 할머니 옆으로 가져가 옆에서 같이 흔들며 앉아 있었습니다. 몇 달이 지난 후 그 할머니는 “나와 함께 해주어서 고마워요.”라고 말했습니다. 그녀는 동반자가 있다는 것에 감사했습니다.
예수님은 승천하시기 전에 제자들에게 변함없는 동반자를 보내주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 주님은 그들을 홀로 내버려두시지 않고 성령님을 보내 그들 속에 있게 하시겠다고 말씀하셨습니다(요한복음 14:17). 그 약속은 오늘날 예수님을 믿는 모든 사람들에게도 마찬가지로 적용됩니다. 예수님은 삼위일체의 하나님께서 우리 안에 “거처”를 마련하신다고 말씀하셨습니다(23절).
주님은 평생 동안 계속해서 가장 가깝고 신실한 우리의 동반자 이십니다. 주님은 가장 어려운 고통 가운데에서 우리를 이끌어주시며, 우리 죄를 용서해주시고, 침묵의 기도를 들으시며, 우리가 질 수 없는 무거운 짐을 져주십니다.
오늘 우리는 좋은 동반자 되시는 주님과 함께 즐거워할 수 있습니다.

Sweet Company
The elderly woman in the nursing home didn’t speak to anyone or request anything. It seemed she merely existed, rocking in her creaky old chair. She didn’t have many visitors, so one young nurse would often go into her room on her breaks. Without asking the woman questions to try to get her to talk, she simply pulled up another chair and rocked with her. After several months, the elderly woman said to her, “Thank you for rocking with me.” She was grateful for the companionship.
Before He went back to heaven, Jesus promised to send a constant companion to His disciples. He told them He would not leave them alone but would send the Holy Spirit to be in them (JOHN 14:17). That promise is still true for believers in Jesus today. Jesus said that the triune God makes His “home” in us (V 23).
The Lord is our close and faithful companion throughout our entire life. He will guide us in our deepest struggles, forgive our sin, hear each silent prayer, and shoulder the burdens we cannot bear.
We can enjoy His sweet company today. - ANNE CETAS

깊은 곳에서 빠져나옴
나는 무슨 문제가 없는지 집중해서 물을 훑어보았습니다. 인명구조원으로 근무하는 6시간 동안 나는 수영하는 사람들의 안전을 확인하려고 수영장 가장자리에서 지켜보았습니다. 내 자리를 벗어나거나 집중력이 흐트러지면 풀장에 있는 사람들에게 중대한 결과를 가져올 수 있습니다. 만약 수영하는 사람이 다치거나 기량 미숙으로 익사할 위험에 빠지면, 나의 책임은 그들을 건져내어 물 밖에 있는 안전지대로 데려오는 것입니다.
블레셋과의 전투에서 하나님의 도움을 경험한 다윗은(사무엘하 21:15-22) 그가 구원 받은 것이 “깊은 물” 속에서 구조된 것과 같다고 말합니다(22:17). 다윗 자신과 그의 부하들의 목숨이 적의 공격으로 아주 위험한 처지에 놓이게 되자, 하나님은 그 재난 속에 빠져 들어가는 다윗을 떠오르게 하셨습니다. 인명구조원은 보수를 받고 수영하는 사람들의 안전을 지키지만, 하나님은 다윗을 ‘기뻐하시므로’ 그를 구원하셨습니다(20절). 하나님께서 나를 지켜보시고 보호하시는 것은 그것이 의무이기 때문이 아니라 하나님이 ‘원하시기’ 때문입니다. 내가 이 사실을 알았을 때 내 가슴은 기쁨으로 요동쳤습니다.
삶이 고통으로 뒤덮인 것처럼 느껴질 때, 인명구조원이신 하나님께서 우리의 고난을 보고 계시며, 우리를 기뻐하셔서 지키고 보호하신다는 것을 알면 우리는 안심할 수 있습니다.

Out of the Deep
I scanned the water intently, on alert for signs of trouble. During my six-hour shifts as a lifeguard, I watched from the side of the pool to ensure the safety of those swimming. Leaving my post, or even becoming lax in my attentiveness, could have grave consequences for those in the pool. If a swimmer was in danger of drowning due to injury or lack of skill, it was my responsibility to pluck them from the water and return them to safety on the pool deck.
After experiencing God’s aid in battle against the Philistines (2 SAM 21:15–22), David likens his rescue to being drawn out of “deep waters” (22:17). David’s very life—and that of his men—was in serious danger from his enemies. God buoyed David as he was drowning in disaster. While lifeguards are paid to assure the safety of swimmers, God, on the other hand, saved David because of His delight in him (V 20). My heart leaps for joy when I realize that God doesn’t watch over and protect me because He’s obliged to but because He wants to.
When we feel overcome by the troubles of life, we can rest in the knowledge that God, our Lifeguard, sees our struggle and, because of His delight in us, watches over and protects us. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
