너는 아니다

다윗은 설계도를 만들고 성전 기물들을 디자인하며 재료를 모으는 등, 필요한 모든 것들을 마련해놓았습니다(역대상 28:11-19 참조). 그러나 예루살렘의 첫 성전은 다윗의 성전이 아니라 솔로몬의 성전으로 알려져 있습니다.

왜냐하면 하나님이 “너는 내가 거할 집을 건축하지 말라”(역대상 17:4)고 말씀하셨기 때문입니다. 하나님은 다윗의 아들 솔로몬을 선택하여 성전을 건축하도록 하셨습니다. 이렇게 하나님께 거절당한 다윗이 보여준 반응은 우리에게 본이 됩니다. 그는 자신이 할 수 없는 것이 아니라, 하나님께서 하시고자 하는 일에 집중하였습니다(16-25절). 그는 늘 감사하는 마음으로 자신이 할 수 있는 모든 일을 다 하며, 유능한 사람들을 불러 모아 솔로몬이 성전 짓는 것을 돕도록 했습니다(역대상 22장 참조).

성경 주석가 맥콘빌은 이렇게 썼습니다. “종종 우리가 인정해야 하는 사실은, 우리가 그리스도인의 사역으로 꼭 하고 싶은 일이 있다 해도, 우리가 그것을 잘 할 수 있는 준비가 되어 있지 않을 수도 있고, 더 나아가 하나님께서 그 일을 하라고 실제로 우리를 부르지 않았을 수도 있다는 것이다. 다윗의 경우처럼, 분명 더 위대한 어떤 일에 이르기 위한 준비사역이 우리가 잘 할 수 있고, 또 하나님이 주신 소명일 수 있다.”

다윗은 자신의 영광이 아닌 하나님의 영광을 구했습니다. 그는 자신의 후대에 성전 건축을 마무리할 솔로몬을 위해 기초를 든든히 다지면서, 하나님의 성전을 위해 충실하게 자신이 할 수 있는 것을 다했습니다. 그와 같이, 우리도 하나님이 택하셔서 우리에게 하라고 주신 일을 받아들이고 감사한 마음으로 하나님을 섬길 수 있기를 바랍니다. 우리의 사랑의 하나님은 “분명 더 위대한” 어떤 일을 하고 계시기 때문입니다.

Not the One

David had drawn up the plans. He designed the furniture. He collected the materials. He made all the arrangements (SEE 1 CHRON. 28:11–19). But the first temple built in Jerusalem is known as Solomon’s Temple, not David’s.

For God had said, “You are not the one” (1 CHRON. 17:4). God had chosen David’s son Solomon to build the temple. David’s response to this denial was exemplary. He focused on what God would do, instead of what he himself could not do (VV. 16–25). He maintained a thankful spirit. He did everything he could and rallied capable men to assist Solomon in building the temple (SEE 1 CHRON. 22).

Bible commentator J. G. McConville wrote: “Often we may have to accept that the work which we would dearly like to perform in terms of Christian service is not that for which we are best equipped, and not that to which God has in fact called us. It may be, like David’s, a preparatory work, leading to something more obviously grand.”

David sought God’s glory, not his own. He faithfully did all he could for God’s temple, laying a solid foundation for the one who would come after him to complete the work. May we, likewise, accept the tasks God has chosen for us to do and serve Him with a thankful heart! Our loving God is doing something “more obviously grand.” - POH FANG CHIA

놀라운 하나님의 얼굴

네 살짜리 내 아들은 질문할 것이 많고, 끊임없이 재잘거립니다. 나는 아들과 이야기하는 것을 아주 좋아하지만, 언젠가부터 아들은 등을 돌리고서도 나에게 이야기하는 좋지 않은 버릇이 생겼습니다. 그래서 나는 가끔씩 이렇게 이야기 합니다. “무슨 말을 하는지 안 들리네. 말할 때는 엄마를 봐 줄래?”

때때로 나는 하나님도 우리에게 같은 말을 하시고 싶어 하신다고 생각합니다. 하나님이 우리 말을 듣지 못하시기 때문이 아니라, 우리가 하나님을 진짜 “쳐다보지” 않고 하나님께 이야기하는 경향이 있기 때문입니다. 우리는 기도를 하면서도 우리의 질문에 사로잡히고 우리 자신에게만 집중한 나머지, 우리가 기도를 드리는 주님이 어떤 분이신지 잊어버리는 경우가 많습니다. 마치 네 살 된 내 아들처럼, 우리는 대화하는 대상에게 관심을 두지 않고 질문을 던집니다.

우리의 많은 걱정들에 대한 최선의 해결책은 하나님이 누구신지, 그리고 그분이 어떤 일을 행하셨는지를 기억하는 것입니다. 단순하게 다시 한 번 생각의 초점을 맞추어, 사랑이 많으시고, 용서하시며, 주권자이시며, 자비로우신 그분의 성품을 깨달음으로써 우리는 위안을 얻을 수 있습니다.

시편기자는 우리가 하나님의 얼굴을 계속 구해야 한다고 믿었습니다(시편 105:4). 다윗은 예배와 기도를 인도하는 사람들을 세울 때에 그들에게 하나님의 성품과 하나님께서 지금까지 신실하게 행하셨던 행적을 이야기하라고 권면하였습니다(역대상 16:8-27).

우리의 눈을 돌려 하나님의 아름다운 얼굴을 구할 때, 우리는 답을 알 수 없는 질문들 가운데에서도 힘을 얻고 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다.

His Wonderful Face

My four-year-old son is full of questions, and chatters constantly. I love talking with him, but he’s developed an unfortunate habit of talking to me even when his back is turned. I often find myself saying, “I can’t hear you—please look at me when you’re talking.”

Sometimes I think God wants to say the same thing to us not because He can’t hear us, but because we can tend to talk to Him without really “looking” at Him. We pray, but we remain caught up in our own questions and focused on ourselves, forgetting the character of the One we’re praying to. Like my son, we ask questions without paying attention to the person we’re talking to.

Many of our concerns are best addressed by reminding ourselves of who God is and what He has done. By simply refocusing, we find comfort in what we know of His character: that He is loving, forgiving, sovereign, graceful.

The psalmist believed we ought to seek God’s face continually (PS. 105:4). When David appointed leaders for worship and prayer, he encouraged the people to praise God’s character and tell stories of His past faithfulness (1 CHRON. 16:8–27).

When we turn our eyes toward the beautiful face of God, we can find strength and comfort that sustain us even in the midst of unanswered questions. - AMY PETERSON

편안하게 품에 안겨서

내 친구는 나에게 태어난 지 4일밖에 안된 그녀의 소중한 딸을 안아볼 수 있는 특권을 주었습니다. 그런데 내가 아기를 품에 안자 얼마 안 되어 아기는 몸을 비틀며 불편해하기 시작했습니다. 나는 아기를 좀 더 꼭 안아주기도 하고, 내 뺨을 아기 이마에 대주기도 하고, 아기를 흔들며 부드럽게 노래를 부르기도 하면서 아기를 달래려고 했습니다. 이런 나의 간절한 노력과 15년간의 부모 경력에도 불구하고, 나는 아기를 달랠 수 없었습니다. 아기가 점점 더 힘들어하자, 나는 아기가 간절히 기다리는 엄마의 품으로 되돌려주었습니다. 거의 순식간에 평화가 아기를 감쌌습니다. 아기의 울음은 그쳤고, 갓 태어난 그녀의 몸은 자기가 이미 신뢰하는 안전함 속에서 편안해졌습니다. 내 친구는 자기 딸을 달래기 위해 어떻게 안아야 할지, 어떻게 토닥여야 할지를 정확하게 알고 있었습니다.

하나님은 마치 엄마가 아이에게 하듯 부드럽고 믿음직하고 부지런히 그분의 자녀들을 편안히 해주십니다. 우리가 지치거나 당황할때, 하나님은 사랑으로 우리를 하나님 품에 안아주십니다. 우리의 아버지 되시고 창조주이신 하나님은 우리를 속속들이 아십니다. “주께서 심지가 견고한 자를 평강하고 평강하도록 지키시리니 이는 그가 주를 신뢰함이니이다”(이사야 26:3).

이 세상의 어려운 일들 때문에 마음이 무거울 때, 사랑하는 부모이신 하나님께서 자녀된 우리를 보호하시고 우리를 위해 싸워주신다는 것을 알기에 우리는 위로를 얻을 수 있습니다.

Cradled in Comfort

My friend entrusted me with the privilege of holding her precious, four-day-old daughter. Not long after I took the baby into my arms, she started to fuss. I hugged her closer, my cheek pressed against her head, and began to sway and hum in a gentle rhythm to soothe her. Despite these earnest attempts, and my decade and a half of parenting experience, I couldn’t pacify her. She became increasingly upset until I placed her back into the crook of her mother’s eager arm. Peace washed over her almost instantaneously; her cries subsided and her newborn frame relaxed into the safety she already trusted. My friend knew precisely how to hold and pat her daughter to alleviate her distress.

God extends comfort to His children like a mother: tender, trustworthy, and diligent in her efforts to calm her child. When we are weary or upset, He carries us affectionately in His arms. As our Father and Creator, He knows us intimately. He “will keep in perfect peace all who trust in [him], all whose thoughts are fixed on [him]” (ISA. 26:3 NLT).

When the troubles of this world weigh heavy on our hearts, we can find comfort in the knowledge that He protects and fights for us, His children, as a loving parent. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

중국에 있는 옛 일본 포로수용소 자리에는 1945년 그곳에서 죽은 한 사람의 기념비가 서 있습니다. 거기에는 이렇게 적혀 있습니다. “에릭 리델은 1902년에 톈진에서 스코틀랜드 부모의 슬하에 태어났다. 그의 경력은 1924년 올림픽 경기의 400미터 종목에서 금메달을 획득했을 때 절정에 달했다. 그 후 그는 중국으로 돌아가 톈진에서 선생으로 일했다...... 그는 젊은이들에게 인류의 더 나은 삶을 위해 최선을 다해 기여하도록 격려하는 일에 일생을 바쳤다.”

What Are You Known For?

A memorial stone stands in the grounds of a former Japanese prison camp in China where a man died in 1945. It reads, “Eric Liddell was born in Tianjin of Scottish parents in 1902. His career reached its peak with his gold medal victory in the 400 metres event at the 1924 Olympic Games. He returned to China to work in Tianjin as a teacher. . . . His whole life was spent encouraging young people to make their best contributions to the betterment of mankind.”

In the eyes of many, Eric’s greatest achievement was on the sports field. But he is also remembered for his contribution to the youth of Tianjin in China, the country where he was born and that he loved. He lived and served by faith.

What will we be remembered for? Our academic achievements, job position, or financial success may get us recognized by others. But it is the quiet work we do in the lives of people that will live long after we are gone.

Moses is remembered in the faith chapter of the Bible, Hebrews 11, as someone who chose to align himself with the people of God instead of enjoying the treasures of Egypt (V. 26). He led and served God’s people by faith. - C. P. HIA

상쾌한 봄비

휴식이 필요해서 근처 공원에 산책을 갔습니다. 길을 따라 내려갈 때 갑자기 초록 색깔이 시선을 끌었습니다. 진흙 속에서 돋아난 새싹들이 몇 주 뒤에는 따뜻한 봄을 알리는 수선화로 생기 있게 필 테지요. 우리는 또 한 번 겨울을 견뎌냈습니다!

호세아서를 읽다 보면 혹독한 겨울같이 느껴지는 부분들이 있습니다. 왜냐하면 이스라엘 백성들을 향한 창조주의 사랑의 표현으로 하나님께서 이 선지자에게 부정한 여자와 결혼하라고 하는, 그리 부럽지 않은 사명을 주셨기 때문입니다(1:2-3). 호세아의 아내인 고멜은 결혼 서약을 깨뜨렸지만, 호세아는 그녀가 그를 헌신적으로 사랑해줄 것을 간절히 바라며 그녀를 다시 받아들였습니다(3:1-3). 마찬가지로 주님께서도 우리가 아침 안개처럼 사라져버리지 않는, 굳건한 마음과 헌신을 가지고 주님을 사랑하기를 바라십니다.

우리는 하나님과 어떤 관계에 있습니까? 우리가 주로 힘들 때에는 고통 속에서 해답을 찾기 위해 하나님을 찾지만, 소위 잘 나갈 때에는 하나님을 무시하지 않습니까? 우리는 이스라엘 백성처럼 분주한 삶이나 성공, 영향력과 같은 우리 시대의 우상에 쉽게 흔들리지 않습니까?

오늘 우리는 봄이 되면 피어나는 꽃봉오리처럼 우리를 확실하게 사랑하시는 주님께 자신을 다시 맡길 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다.

Refreshing Spring Rains

Needing a break, I went for a walk in the nearby park. As I headed down the path, a burst of green caught my attention. Out of the mud appeared shoots of life that in a few weeks would be cheerful daffodils, heralding spring and the warmth to come. We had made it through another winter!

As we read through the book of Hosea, it can feel in parts like an unrelenting winter. For the Lord gave this prophet the unenviable task of marrying an unfaithful woman as a picture of the Creator’s love for His people Israel (1:2–3). Hosea’s wife, Gomer, broke their wedding vows, but Hosea welcomed her back, yearning that she would love him devotedly (3:1–3). So too the Lord desires that we love Him with a strength and commitment that won’t evaporate like the morning mist.

How do we relate to God? Do we seek Him mainly in times of trouble, searching for answers in our distress but ignoring Him during our seasons of celebration? Are we like the Israelites, easily swayed by the idols of our age, including such things as busyness, success, and influence?

Today, may we recommit ourselves to the Lord, who loves us as surely as the flowers bud in the spring. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

달리기와 휴식

“육상 선수에게 중요한 휴식 기간”이라는 신문의 머리기사가 내 눈에 들어왔습니다. 전 미국 산악경주 팀의 일원이었던 토미 매닝이 쓴 기사에서 그는 운동선수들이 종종 소홀히 하는 한 가지 원칙, 즉 몸은 운동 후에 휴식과 재충전의 시간이 필요하다는 것을 강조했습니다. 매닝은 이렇게 썼습니다. “생리적으로 볼 때, 훈련의 결과로 나타나는 적응은 오직 휴식할 때에만 일어난다. 이것은 휴식이 훈련만큼 중요하다는 것을 의미한다.”

이 사실은 믿음과 섬김의 삶에도 똑같이 적용됩니다. 정기적으로 휴식시간을 갖는 것은 탈진하고 낙심하는 것을 피하는데 필수적입니다. 예수님은 하실 일이 엄청나게 많으셨음에도 불구하고, 지상의 삶을 사시는 동안 영적인 균형을 추구하셨습니다. 예수님의 제자들이 사람들을 가르치고 그들의 병을 고쳐주는 아주 힘든 시간을 보내고 돌아왔을 때, 주님은 그들에게 “너희는 따로 한적한 곳에 가서 잠깐 쉬어라”(마가복음 6:31)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 큰 무리의 사람들이 그들을 따르자 예수님은 그들을 가르치시고 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리로 그들을 먹이신 후(32-44절), 모든 사람들이 다 떠나가자 “기도하러 산으로” 가셨습니다(46절).

우리의 인생이 일만 하는 것이라면, 우리가 하는 일은 점점 더 효과가 적어질 것입니다. 예수님은 기도하고 휴식을 취할 수 있는 조용한 곳에서 정기적으로 주님을 만날 것을 우리에게 권면하십니다.

Running and Rest

The headline caught my eye: “Rest Days Important for Runners.” In Tommy Manning’s article, the former member of the U.S. Mountain Running Team emphasized a principle that dedicated athletes sometimes ignore—the body needs time to rest and rebuild after exercise. “Physiologically, the adaptations that occur as a result of training only happen during rest,” Manning wrote. “This means rest is as important as workouts.”

The same is true in our walk of faith and service. Regular times of rest are essential to avoid burnout and discouragement. Jesus sought spiritual balance during His life on Earth, even in the face of great demands. When His disciples returned from a strenuous time of teaching and healing others, “He said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest’” (MARK 6:31). But a large crowd followed them, so Jesus taught them and fed them with only five loaves and two fish (VV. 32–44). When everyone was gone, Jesus “went up on a mountainside to pray” (V. 46).

If our lives are defined by work, then what we do becomes less and less effective. Jesus invites us to regularly join Him in a quiet place to pray and get some rest. - DAVID MCCASLAND

작은 불

9월의 어느 일요일 밤 대부분의 사람들이 잠들어 있을 때, 푸딩 거리에 있는 토마스 파리너 빵집에서 작은 불이 일어났습니다. 불길은 곧 옆집들로 속속 번져 런던은 이렇게 1666년 대화재를 겪게 되었습니다. 전 도시의 5분의 4를 파괴한 이 화재로 7만 명이 넘는 사람들이 집을 잃었습니다. 그렇게 조그만 불이 그처럼 큰 참사를 가져온 것입니다!

성경은 우리에게 또 하나의 작지만 매우 파괴적인 불을 경고합니다. 야고보는 건물이 아닌 삶과 인간관계를 염려하며 이렇게 썼습니다. “이와 같이 혀도 작은 지체로되 큰 것을 자랑하도다 보라 얼마나 작은 불이 얼마나 많은 나무를 태우는가”(야고보서 3:5).

그러나 우리의 말은 ‘건설적인’ 것이 될 수도 있습니다. 잠언 16장 24절은 우리에게 “선한 말은 꿀송이 같아서 마음에 달고 뼈에 양약이 되느니라”라고 상기시켜 줍니다. 바울 사도도 “너희 말을 항상 은혜 가운데서 소금으로 맛을 냄과 같이 하라 그리하면 각 사람에게 마땅히 대답할 것을 알리라” (골로새서 4:6)라고 말합니다. 소금이 음식의 맛을 내듯이, 은혜는 다른 사람들을 세워주는 우리의 말에 풍미를 더해줍니다.

성령님의 도움을 통해 우리의 말은 마음이 상한 사람들과 믿음이 자라기를 원하는 사람들, 또는 구주가 필요한 사람들에게 용기를 줄 수 있습니다. 우리의 말은 불을 지르는 대신 불을 끌 수 있습니다.

A Small Fire

It was a Sunday night in September and most people were sleeping when a small fire broke out in Thomas Farriner’s bakery on Pudding Lane. Soon the flames spread from house to house and London was engulfed in the Great Fire of 1666. Over 70,000 people were left homeless by the blaze that leveled four-fifths of the city. So much destruction from such a small fire!

The Bible warns us of another small but destructive fire. James was concerned about lives and relationships, not buildings, when he wrote, “The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark” (JAMES 3:5).

But our words can also be constructive. Proverbs 16:24 reminds us, “Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” The apostle Paul says, “Let your
conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (COL. 4:6). As salt flavors our food, grace flavors our words for building up others.

Through the help of the Holy Spirit our words can encourage people who are hurting, who want to grow in their faith, or who need to come to the Savior. Our words can put out fires instead of starting them. - BILL CROWDER

뭔가 이상해요

우리 아들 알렌이 태어난 날 아침, 의사가 내 병상 발치에 있는 의자에 앉아 “뭔가 이상해요.”라고 말했습니다. 우리 아들은 외관상 완전해보였으나 생명을 위협하는 선천적 장애가 있어, 곧바로 응급수술을 받기 위해 비행기로 700마일 떨어진 병원에 이송해야 할 상황이었습니다.

의사가 당신 아이에게 뭔가 이상이 있다고 말하면, 그때부터 당신의 삶이 바뀝니다. 앞으로 닥칠 것에 대한 두려움으로 마음이 무너지고 후들거리며, 아이를 돌볼 수 있는 힘을 달라고 하나님께 필사적 으로 매달리게 됩니다. 당신에게 이런 의심도 듭니다. ‘사랑의 하나님이 이것을 허락하셨을까? 하나님이 내 아이를 돌아보고 계시나? 하나님이 계시는 걸까?’ 그날 아침 이런 저런 생각이 나의 믿음을 흔들었습니다.

그때 남편 히람이 도착하여 그 소식을 들었습니다. 의사가 떠난 후 남편은 “졸린, 같이 기도합시다.”라고 말했습니다. 내가 고개를 끄덕이자 남편이 내 손을 잡았습니다. “하나님 아버지, 알렌을 우리에게 주신 것을 감사합니다. 알렌은 우리의 자녀가 아닌, 하나님의 자녀입니다. 우리가 알렌을 알기 전 하나님께서 그를 먼저 사랑하셨고, 지금도 주님의 것입니다. 우리는 같이 있지 못해도 하나님께서 그와 함께 해주시옵소서. 아멘.”

히람은 언제나 말이 별로 없는 사람이었습니다. 그는 자기 생각을 말하는 것을 힘들어하고, 조용할 때에는 내가 말을 많이 한다는 것을 알기 때문에 평소에는 별로 말을 하려 하지 않습니다. 그런데 그날 내 가슴이 찢어지고 마음이 무너지며 믿음을 잃었을 때, 하나님은 내가 할 수 없는 그 말들을 히람이 대신 할 수 있게 그에게 힘을 주셨습니다. 남편의 손을 잡고 깊은 침묵 속에 많은 눈물을 흘리면서, 나는 그때 하나님께서 아주 가까이 계신 것을 느꼈습니다.

Something’s Wrong

The morning after our son, Allen, was born, the doctor sat down in a chair near the foot of my bed and said, “Something’s wrong.” Our son, so perfect on the outside, had a life threatening birth defect and needed to be flown to a hospital 700 miles away for immediate surgery.

When the doctor tells you something is wrong with your child, your life changes. Fear of what lies ahead can crush your spirit and you stumble along, desperate for a God who will strengthen you so you can support your child. Would a loving God allow this? you wonder. Does He care about my child? Is He there? These and other thoughts shook my faith that morning.

Then my husband, Hiram, arrived and heard the news. After the doctor left, Hiram said, “Jolene, let’s pray.” I nodded and he took my hand. “Thank You, Father, for giving Allen to us. He’s Yours, God, not ours. You loved him before we knew him, and he belongs to You. Be with him when we can’t. Amen.”

Hiram has always been a man of few words. He struggles to speak his thoughts and often doesn’t try, knowing that I have enough words to fill any silence. But on a day when my heart was broken, my spirit crushed, and my faith gone, God gave Hiram strength to speak the words I couldn’t say. And clinging to my husband’s hand, in deep silence and through many tears, I sensed that God was very near. - JOLENE PHILO, GUEST WRITER

먼저 하십시오

어떤 문화권에서는 젊은 사람이 나이 든 사람에게 먼저 방에 들어가도록 양보해야 합니다. 또 어떤 문화권에서는 아주 중요하거나 가장 지위가 높은 사람이 먼저 들어갑니다. 우리의 전통과 관계없이, 어떤 중요한 문제에 대해 다른 누구에게 먼저 결정권을 주기가 어려울 때가 있습니다. 특히 우리에게 당연히 결정할 권한이 있을 때 더 그렇습니다.

아브람(후에 아브라함이라 불림)이 조카 롯과 함께 길을 떠났을 때, 그들에게 속한 수많은 양떼와 소떼와 장막으로 땅이 충분하지 않았습니다. 아브람은 난처한 입장을 타개하기 위해 롯에게 서로 나뉠 것을 권하며 그에게 땅을 먼저 선택하라고 호의를 베풀었습니다. 조카 롯이 비옥한 요단 계곡을 차지하자, 아브람에게는 별로 가치 없는 땅만 남게 되었습니다.

아브람은 이 상황에서 연장자로서의 권한을 행사하지 않고 그의 미래를 하나님께 맡겼습니다. “아브람이 롯에게 이르되......나나 너나......서로 다투게 하지 말자 네 앞에 온 땅이 있지 아니하냐 나를 떠나가라 네가 좌하면 나는 우하고 네가 우하면 나는 좌하리라”(창세기 13:8-9). 그러나 롯의 선택은 결국 온 가족에게 무서운 결과를 초래하고 말았습니다(창세기 19장 참조).

오늘날 우리가 여러 가지 선택을 해야 할 때, 하나님 아버지께서 그분의 뜻대로 우리를 인도하시도록 맡겨야 합니다. 우리를 돌보시겠다고 약속하신 하나님은 우리의 필요를 항상 채워주실 것입니다.

After You

In some cultures a younger person is expected to permit his elder to enter a room first. In others, the most important or highest ranking individual enters first. No matter what our traditions, there are times when we find it difficult to allow someone to choose first on important matters, especially when that privilege rightfully belongs to us.

Abram (later called Abraham) and his nephew Lot had so many flocks, herds, and tents that the land could not support both of them as they traveled together. To avoid conflict, Abram suggested they part company and generously gave Lot first choice of the land. His nephew took the fertile Jordan Valley, leaving Abram with the less desirable land.

Abram did not insist on his rights as the elder in this situation but trusted his future to God. “So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me . . . . Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left” (GEN. 13:8–9). Lot’s choice eventually led to dire consequences for his entirefamily (SEE GEN. 19).

Today, as we face choices of many kinds, we can trust our Father to guide us in His way. He has promised to care for us. He will always give us what we need. - DAVID MCCASLAND

손가락 사이로 흘림

식당의 식탁 위에 있던 잔을 얼떨결에 치는 바람에 음료수가 쏟아져 식탁 가장자리로 흘러 바닥으로 떨어지기 시작했습니다. 너무 당황한 나머지 손을 오므려 떨어지는 물을 받아보려 했지만, 그런 노력은 별로 소용이 없어서 대부분의 음료수는 손가락 사이로 새어나가 버렸습니다. 받쳐 든 손바닥에는 겨우 한 숟가락 보다 조금 많은 정도만 남았고, 발밑은 질퍽거렸습니다.

내 삶의 많은 날들도 이와 비슷합니다. 문제를 해결하느라, 세세한 것에 매달리느라, 상황을 통제하느라 뒤죽박죽이 되어버리는 나 자신을 발견합니다. 아무리 열심히 노력 해도 나의 미약한 능력으로는 모든 사안들과 부분들을 다 다루기에 부족합니다. 무언가가 항상 손가락 사이로 빠져나가 내가 서있는 주위 바닥을 흥건하게 하고 나를 무기력하게 만들어버립니다. 새지 않게 하려고 아무리 손을 비틀고 손가락을 세게 오므려도 새는 것을 막을 수가 없습니다.

그러나 하나님은 하실 수 있습니다. 하나님은 모든 바다와 강과 비까지, 온 세상의 물을 손바닥으로 헤아릴 수 있다고 이사야는 말합니다 (40:12). 오직 하나님의 손만이 그 모두를 담을 수 있을 만큼 큽니다. 하나님께서 우리 손으로는 한 숟가락 정도만 담을 수 있게 만드셨으니 더 담으려고 애쓸 필요가 없습니다. 우리가 무력함을 느낄 때, 우리의 근심과 걱정을 하나님의 능하신 손에 맡길 수 있습니다.

Spilling Through My Fingers

After I clumsily knocked over my glass on the restaurant counter, the spilled beverage began to cascade over the edge and onto the floor. Out of sheer embarrassment, I tried to catch the waterfall with cupped hands. My efforts were largely unsuccessful; most of my beverage rushed through my fingers. In the end, my upturned palms held little more than a meager tablespoon each, while my feet stood in puddles.

My life feels similar on many days. I find myself scrambling to solve problems, oversee details, and control circumstances. No matter how hard I try, my feeble hands are incapable of managing all the pieces and parts. Something invariably slips through my fingers and pools on the floor at my feet, leaving me feeling overwhelmed. No amount of contorting my hands or squeezing my fingers more tightly together makes me able to handle it all.

Yet God can. Isaiah tells us that God can measure the globe’s waters—all the oceans and rivers and rain—in the hollow of His hands (40:12). Only His hands are large enough to hold them all. We needn’t try to hold more than the tablespoon He’s designed our hands to carry. When we feel overwhelmed, we can entrust our cares and concerns into His capable hands. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
