어린이를 향한 사랑

토마스 바나도는 중국 의료선교사의 삶을 꿈꾸며 1865년 런던 병원 의과대학에 입학했습니다. 그러나 오래지 않아 그의 집 앞에 도움이 절실히 필요한 사람들이 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 집 없는 은 아이들이 런던의 거리에서 죽어가고 있었던 것입니다. 그는 이 참혹한 환경에 대해 무엇이든 해야겠다고 결심했습니다. 바나도는 런던의 동쪽 끝에 극빈층 아동들을 위한 집들을 지어 6만여 명의 소년 소녀들을 가난과, 또 혹 있을지도 모를 조기 사망으로부터 구해냈습니다. 신학자이자 목회자인 존 스타트는 “오늘 우리는 그를 거리 아동들의 수호성인이라고 부를 수 있습니다.”라고 말했습니다.

Love for Children

Thomas Barnado entered the London Hospital medical school in 1865, dreaming of life as a medical missionary in China. Barnado soon discovered a desperate need in his own front yard—the many homeless children living and dying on the streets of London. Barnado determined to do something about this horrendous situation. Developing homes for destitute children in London’s east end, Barnado rescued some 60,000 boys and girls from poverty and possible early death. Theologian and pastor John Stott said, “Today we might call him the patron saint of street kids.”

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children” (MATT 19:14 NLT ). Imagine the surprise the crowds—and Jesus’s own disciples—must have felt at this declaration. In the ancient world, children had little value and were largely relegated to the margins of life. Yet Jesus welcomed, blessed, and valued children.

James, a New Testament writer, challenged Christ-followers saying, “Pure and lasting religion in the sight of God our Father means that we must care for orphans . . . in their troubles” (JAMES 1:27 NLT ). Today, like those first-century orphans, children of every social strata, ethnicity, and family environment are at risk due to neglect, human trafficking, abuse, drugs, and more. How can we honor the Father who loves us by showing His care for these little ones Jesus welcomes? - BILL CROWDER

두려움에서 믿음으로

의사의 말에 그녀의 마음이 쿵하고 내려앉았습니다. 암이었습니다. 그녀는 남편과 아이들을 생각하니 세상이 막막했습니다. 가족들은 결과가 다르게 나오기를 바라며 열심히 기도했었습니다. 그들이 무엇을 할 수 있었을까요? 볼을 타고 흐르는 눈물과 함께 그녀는 조용히 말했습니다. “하나님, 저희가 할 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 제발 저희의 힘이 되어주세요.”

예후가 아주 안 좋게 나왔을 때, 또는 우리가 처한 상황이 우리의 통제를 벗어났을때 우리는 어떻게 합니까? 전망이 절망적일때 우리는 어디로 향합니까?

하박국 선지자의 상황도 그가 어떻게 할 수 없었고, 그로 인한 두려움으로 그는 공포에 휩싸이게 되었습니다. 비극적인 심판이 다가오고 있었습니다(하박국 3:16-17). 그러나 눈앞에 닥친 혼란 가운데서도 하박국은 믿음으로 살고(2:4) 하나님으로 즐거워하기로 마음을 정했습니다(3:18). 하박국은 그의 신뢰와 믿음을 그의 환경이나 능력이나 물질에 두지 않고, 주님의 선하심과 위대하심에 두었습니다. 그는 주님을 향한 믿음으로 이렇게 선포했습니다. “주 여호와는 나의 힘이시라 나의 발을 사슴과 같게 하사 나를 나의 높은 곳으로 다니게 하시리로다”(19절).

질병이나 가정의 위기, 재정 문제로 힘든 상황에 직면했을 때, 우리 또한 우리의 믿음과 신뢰를 오직 하나님께만 두어야 합니다. 하나님은 우리가 마주하는 모든 상황 속에서 우리와 함께 하십니다.

From Fear to Faith

The doctor’s words landed in her heart with a thud. It was cancer. Her world stopped as she thought of her husband and children. They had prayed diligently, hoping for a different outcome. What would they do? With tears streaming down her face, she said softly, “God, this is beyond our control. Please be our strength.”

What do we do when the prognosis is devastating, when our circumstances are beyond our control? Where do we turn when the outlook seems hopeless?

The prophet Habakkuk’s situation was out of his control, and the fear that he felt terrified him. The coming judgment would be catastrophic (HAB 3:16–17). Yet, in the midst of the impending chaos, Habakkuk made a choice to live by his faith (2:4) and rejoice in God (3:18). He did not place his confidence and faith in his circumstances, ability, or resources, but in the goodness and greatness of God. His trust in God compelled him to proclaim: “The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights” (V 19).

When we are faced with difficult circumstances—sickness, family crisis, financial trouble—we, too, have only to place our faith and trust in God. He is with us in everything we face. - KAREN WOLFE

모든 것에 감사

호주에서는 도시에서 도시를 운전해 가는데 몇 시간씩 걸리기 때문에 피곤하여 사고가 나기 쉽습니다. 그래서 번잡한 연휴 기간에는 주요 고속도로에 자원봉사자들이 커피를 무료로 제공해주는 휴게소가 세워집니다. 아내 메린과 나는 오랜 시간 운전하는 동안 이런 휴게소에 들르는 것을 좋아하게 되었습니다.

한번은 차를 세운 뒤 걸어 들어가 커피를 주문했더니, 종업원이 커피 두 잔을 주면서 2불을 내라고 하였습니다. 무슨 소리냐고 했더니, 그녀는 표지판에 있는 작은 글씨를 가리켰습니다. 거기에는 ‘이 휴게소는 운전자만 커피가 무료입니다. 동승하신 분들은 커피 값을 내셔야 합니다.’ 라고 쓰여 있었습니다. 나는 기분이 언짢아 그녀에게 그 광고는 잘못된 거라고 말하고는 2불을 지불하고 걸어 나왔습니다. 그러나 차에 돌아오자 아내가 나의 잘못을 지적해주었습니다. 내가 선물을 당연한 권리로 여기고는 내가 받은 것에 감사하지 않았다는 것이었습니다. 아내 말이 맞았습니다.

모세가 이스라엘 백성들을 약속의 땅으로 인도했을 때, 그는 백성들에게 감사하는 자들이 되라고 권면했습니다(신명기 8:10). 하나님의 축복 때문에 그 땅이 비옥했지만, 그들은 그 풍성함을 당연히 그들이 받아야 할 것으로 쉽게 간주해버릴 수 있었기 때문이었습니다 (17-18절). 이 일로 인해 그들은 아무리 작은 음식이라도 모든 음식에 감사하는 습관을 가지게 되었습니다. 그들에게 있어서는 모든 것이 선물이었습니다.

나는 그 종업원에게 다시 돌아가 사과하였습니다. 무료 커피 한 컵은 내가 당연히 받아야 할 것이 아니라 선물이었으며, 내가 감사해야 할 것이었습니다.

Grateful for Everything

In Australia, it can take hours to drive between towns and fatigue can lead to accidents. So at busy holiday times rest stops are set up on major highways with volunteers offering free coffee. My wife, Merryn, and I grew to enjoy these stops during our long drives there.

On one trip, we pulled in and walked over to order our coffee. An attendant handed the two cups over, and then asked me for two dollars. I asked why. She pointed to the small print on the sign. At this stop, only the driver got free coffee; you had to pay for passengers. Annoyed, I told her this was false advertising, paid the two dollars, and walked off. Back at the car, Merryn pointed out my error: I had turned a gift into an entitlement and become ungrateful for what I received. She was right.

When Moses led the Israelites into the Promised Land, he urged them to be a grateful people (DEUT 8:10). Thanks to the blessings of God, the land was abundant, but they could easily treat this prosperity as something they deserved (VV 17–18). From this, the Jews developed a practice of giving thanks for every meal, no matter how small. For them, it was all a gift.

만일......

우리가 주차장을 빠져나갈 때 남편은 자전거를 타고 오는 젊은 여자가 먼저 지나가도록 차의 속도를 줄였습니다. 남편이 먼저 가도 된다고 고개를 끄덕이자 그녀는 미소 지으며 손을 흔들고는 먼저 지나갔습니다. 그러나 잠시 후 주차된 스포츠 유틸리티 차량의 운전자가 차 문을 열면서 그녀를 쳐서 그녀는 길바닥에 넘어지고 말았습니다. 그녀의 다리에 피가 나고 있었고, 자전거가 찌그러진 것을 보고는 울음을 터뜨렸습니다.

우리는 나중에 그 일을 다시 돌이켜보았습니다. ‘만일 우리가 그녀더러 기다리라고 했었다면...... 만일 그 운전자가 문을 열기 전에 먼저 보았더라면......만일......’ 이렇게 계속 다시 생각해보고 있을 때 과거의 어려웠던 일들이 떠올랐습니다. ‘만일 우리 아이가 술을 마시는 십대 아이들과 함께 어울린다는 것을 알았더라면...... 만일 우리가 암을 좀 더 빨리 발견했더라면......’

예기치 못한 어려움이 닥칠 때 우리는 때때로 하나님의 선하심을 의심하고, 마르다와 마리아가 그들의 오빠가 죽었을 때 느꼈던 절망감을 느끼기까지 합니다. “주께서 여기 계셨더라면 내 오라버니가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다”(요한복음 11:21,32).

마르다와 마리아처럼 우리도 왜 힘든 일들이 우리에게 닥치는지 언제나 이해하지는 못합니다. 하지만 하나님께서 더 큰 선을 이루시기 위해 그분의 목적을 이루어가고 계신다는 것을 알면 안식을 얻을 수 있습니다. 모든 상황 속에서 우리는 우리의 신실하시고 사랑하시는 하나님의 지혜를 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

빛 가운데에서 하나님을 신뢰하는 것은 아무것도 아니다. 그러나 어두움 속에서 하나님을 신뢰하는 것, 그것이 바로 믿음이다.

If Only . . .

As we exited the parking lot, my husband slowed the car to wait for a young woman riding her bike. When Tom nodded to indicate she could go first, she smiled, waved, and rode on. Moments later, the driver from a parked SUV threw his door open, knocking the young bicyclist to the pavement. Her legs bleeding, she cried as she examined her bent-up bike.

Later, we reflected on the accident: If only we had made her wait . . . If only the driver had looked before opening his door. If only . . . Difficulties catch us up in a cycle of second-guessing ourselves. If only I had known my child was with teens who were drinking . . . If only we had found the cancer earlier . . .

When unexpected trouble comes, we sometimes question the goodness of God. We may even feel the despair that Martha and Mary experienced when their brother died. Oh, if Jesus had only come when He first found out that Lazarus was sick! (JOHN 11:21, 32).

Like Martha and Mary, we don’t always understand why hard things happen to us. But we can rest in the knowledge that God is working out His purposes for a greater good. In every circumstance, we can trust the wisdom of our faithful and loving God. - CINDY HESS KASPER

하나님 아버지의 얼굴

나는 아버지의 얼굴을 기억합니다. 아버지의 얼굴 표정은 읽기가 어려웠습니다. 친절한 분이셨으나 금욕적이고 과묵하셨습니다. 나는 어렸을 때 종종 아버지의 얼굴을 살피면서 미소나 다른 애정의 표현을 찾아보려 하였습니다. 얼굴은 우리 자신입니다. 찡그리거나 시무룩한 표정, 미소, 그리고 주름진 눈은 다른 사람들에 대한 우리의 느낌을 나타내줍니다. 우리의 얼굴은 우리를 “말해줍니다.”

시편 80편의 저자 아삽은 마음이 혼란해져 주님의 얼굴을 보기 원했습니다. 그는 예루살렘의 전망이 좋은 곳에서 북쪽을 바라보며 유다의 자매 국가인 이스라엘이 앗수르 제국의 힘에 무너지는 것을 보았습니다. 완충 역할을 하던 국가들이 없어진 유다는 북쪽의 앗수르, 남쪽의 이집트, 동쪽의 아랍 국가 등, 모든 측면에서 침입을 당할 취약한 상황에 놓이게 되었습니다. 유다는 수적으로도 열세했고 상대가 되지도 않을 만큼 약했습니다.

아삽은 모든 두려움을 끌어보아 세 번 반복해서 기도했습니다 (80:3,7,19). “주의 얼굴빛을 비추사 우리가 구원을 얻게 하소서.” (다른 말로 하면, 주님의 미소를 보여주소서.)

두려움으로부터 고개를 돌려 하나님 아버지의 얼굴을 찾는 것은 좋은 일입니다. 하나님의 얼굴을 가장 잘 볼 수 있는 방법은 십자가를 바라보는 것입니다. 십자가는 주님을 “말해줍니다”(요한복음 3:16).

그러므로 이것을 명심하십시오. 하나님 아버지께서 당신을 보실 때, 하나님은 얼굴에 큰 미소를 지으십니다. 당신은 매우 안전합니다!

Our Father’s Face

I remember my father’s face. It was hard to read. He was a kind man, but stoic and self-contained. As a child, I often searched his face, looking for a smile or other show of affection. Faces are us. A frown, a sullen look, a smile, and crinkly eyes reveal what we feel about others. Our faces are our “tell.”

Asaph, the author of Psalm 80, was distraught and wanted to see the Lord’s face. He looked north from his vantage point in Jerusalem and saw Judah’s sister-state, Israel, collapse under the weight of the Assyrian Empire. With her buffer state gone, Judah was vulnerable to invasion from all sides—Assyria from the north, Egypt from the south, and the Arab nations from the east. She was outnumbered and outmatched.

Asaph gathered up his fears in a prayer, three times repeated (80:3, 7, 19), “Make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.” (Or, in other words, let me see Your smile.)

It’s good to look away from our fears and search our heavenly Father’s face. The best way to see God’s face is to look at the cross. The cross is His “tell” (JOHN 3:16).

So know this: When your Father looks at you, He has a great big smile on His face. You’re very safe! - DAVID ROPER

그리스도의 마음

이집트의 감옥에서 400일 동안 구금되었다가 석방된 호주의 한 기자는 안도감을 느끼는 것을 인정하면서도, 뒤에 남아있는 동료들에 대한 엄청난 염려와 함께 그의 자유를 받아들였다고 말하면서 복잡한 그의 감정을 표현했습니다. 그는 자기와 함께 체포되어 투옥된, 앞으로 얼마나 더 구금되어 있어야할지 모르는 동료 기자들에게 작별 인사를 하는 것이 너무 힘들었다고 말했습니다.

뒤돌아보면, 모세와 바울 둘 다 그리스도의 마음을 표현했다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그러나 그들이 ‘느낄’ 수만 있었던 그 사랑과 ‘바칠’ 수만 있었던 그 희생을, 예수님은 우리와 영원히 함께 계시기 위해 다 ‘이루셨습니다’.

다른 사람을 돌보는 것이 우리에 대한 예수님의 사랑을 영화롭게 하는 것이다.

The Heart of Christ

An Australian journalist who spent 400 days in an Egyptian jail expressed mixed emotions when he was released. While admitting his relief, he said he accepted his freedom with incredible concern for the friends he was leaving behind. He said he found it extremely hard to say goodbye to fellow reporters who had been arrested and jailed with him—not knowing how much longer they were going to be held.

Moses also expressed great anxiety at the thought of leaving friends behind. When faced with the thought of losing the brother, sister, and nation that had worshiped a golden calf while he was meeting with God on Mount Sinai (EX 32:11-14), he interceded for them. Showing how deeply he cared, he pled, “But now, please forgive their sin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written” (V 32).

The apostle Paul later expressed a similar concern for family, friends, and nation. Grieving their unbelief in Jesus, Paul said he would be willing to give up his own relationship with Christ if by such love he could save his brothers and sisters (ROM 9:3).

Looking back, we see that Moses and Paul both expressed the heart of Christ. Yet, the love they could only feel , and the sacrifice they could only offer , Jesus fulfilled —to be with us forever. - MART DEHAAN

오늘날처럼 유명인사 중독증에 사로잡힌 문화에서는 “유명인사들이 그들의 개인 시간이나 관심을 팔도록 상품화하여” 판매하는 기업들의 행위가 별로 놀라운 일이 아닙니다. 뉴요커 잡지에 실린 보히니 베라의 글에 의하면, 15,000불을 지불하면 가수 샤키라와 개인적으로 만나볼 수 있고, 12,000불을 지불하면 11명의 손님과 함께 유명 요리사 마이클 치아렐로의 저택에서 식사할 수 있다고 합니다.

많은 사람들이 예수님을 마치 유명인사처럼 대하면서, 이곳저곳으로 예수님을 따라다니며, 예수님의 가르침을 듣고, 기적을 목격하고, 예수님의 손길로 병 고침을 받고자 했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 결코 거만하거나 무관심하지 않으셨고, 모든 사람들에게 자신을 내어주셨습니다. 제자 야고보와 요한이 앞으로 임할 주님의 나라에서 지위를 얻기 위해 은밀히 구하자, 예수님은 모든 제자들에게 이렇게 상기시켜주셨습니다. “너희 중에 누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 모든 사람의 종이 되어야 하리라”(마가복음 10:43-44).

이렇게 말씀하신 후 곧 예수님은 주님을 따르는 무리의 행진을 멈추시고 앞 못 보는 거지에게 “네게 무엇을 하여 주기를 원하느냐” (51절)고 물으셨습니다. 그가 “선생님이여 보기를 원하나이다” 하니, 곧 그가 보게 되어 예수님을 따랐습니다(52절).

우리 주님은 “섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려 하고 자기 목숨을 많은 사람의 대속물로 주려고”(45절) 오셨다고 말씀하셨습니다. 우리도 오늘 예수님처럼 다른 사람들에게 동정심을 가지고 기꺼이 도울 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Available to All

In today’s celebrity-obsessed culture, it isn’t surprising that entrepreneurs are marketing “celebrities as products . . . allowing them to sell their personal time and attention.” Vauhini Vara’s article in The New Yorker noted that for $15,000, you can have a personal meeting with singer Shakira, while $12,000 will give you and eleven guests lunch with celebrity chef Michael Chiarello at his estate.

Many people treated Jesus like a celebrity as they followed Him from place to place, listened to His teaching, observed His miracles, and sought healing from His touch. Yet Jesus was never self-important or aloof, but available to all. When His followers James and John were privately jockeying for position in His coming kingdom, Jesus reminded all His disciples, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all” (MARK 10:43–44).

Soon after Jesus said this, He stopped a procession of people following Him to ask a blind beggar, “What do you want me to do for you?” (V 51) “Rabbi, I want to see,” the man replied. He received his sight immediately and followed Jesus (V 52).

Our Lord “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (V 45). May we, like Him, be compassionate and available to others today. - DAVID MCCASLAND

풍성한 삶

내가 여동생 집을 방문했을 때, 조카들이 하루 일과를 관리하는 새로운 시스템인 초로폴리 보드들을 앞다투어 내게 보여주었습니다. 선명한 색깔의 각각의 전자보드에 그들의 하루 일과가 기록됩니다. 어떤 일을 잘 했으면 아이들은 녹색 버튼을 누를 수 있고, 그것은 “지출” 구좌에 점수를 더해줍니다. 뒷문을 닫지 않은 것과 같이 잘못한 행동은 전체 구좌에서 점수가 깎이는 벌금을 물게 됩니다. 총 점수가 높으면 컴퓨터를 쓸 수 있는 신나는 상을 받게 되고 잘못한 행동은 점수를 잃게 되니, 요즘 조카들이 그들의 일과를 마치거나 문을 닫는 일을 얼마나 열심히 하는지 모릅니다!

나는 이런 기발한 시스템을 보고, 내게도 이처럼 동기를 주는 신나는 도구가 있었으면 좋겠다고 농담했습니다! 물론 하나님은 이미 우리에게 동기를 주셨습니다. 예수님은 단지 복종하라고만 명령하시지
않고, 비록 희생이 따를지라도 예수님을 따라가는 삶은 넘치는 삶, 즉 “풍성한 생명”(요한복음 10:10)이라고 약속해주셨습니다. 하나님의 나라를 경험하는 삶은 현세에서나 내세에서 “100배”의 가치가 있습니다 (마가복음 10:29-30).

우리에게 마땅한 벌을 주시지 않고, 우리에게 마땅한 것보다 더 상주시는 자비로우신 하나님을 우리가 섬기고 있다는 사실로 인해 우리는 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 아주 미약한 노력조차도 너그럽게 받아주시며, 하나님 나라에 뒤늦게 온 사람들에게조차도 일찍 들어온 사람들에게 베풀어주신 것처럼 너그럽게 반가이 맞아주시고 상을 주십니다(마태복음 20:1-16 참조). 이 사실에 비추어, 오늘 기쁨으로 하나님을 섬깁시다.

Life to the Full

When I stopped by to visit my sister’s family, my nephews eagerly showed me their new chore system, a set of Choropoly boards. Each colorful electronic board keeps track of their chores. A job well done means the kids can hit a green button, which adds points to their “spending” account. A misdeed like leaving the back door open results in a fine being deducted from the total. Since a high-points total leads to exciting rewards such as computer time—and misdeeds deduct from that total—my nephews are now unusually motivated to do their work and to keep the door closed!

The ingenious system had me joking that I wished I had such an exciting motivational tool! But of course God has given us motivation. Rather than simply commanding obedience, Jesus has promised that a life of following Him, while costly, is also a life of abundance, “life . . . to the full” (JOHN 10:10). Experiencing life in His kingdom is worth “one hundred times” the cost—now and eternally (MARK 10:29–30).

We can rejoice in the fact that we serve a generous God, One who does not reward and punish as we deserve. He generously accepts our weakest efforts—even welcoming and rewarding latecomers to His kingdom as generously as old-timers (SEE MATT 20:1–16). In light of this reality, let us joyfully serve Him today. - MONICA BRANDS

하나님의 사랑을 나타내기

어머니가 암센터에 입주해서 치료를 받으시는 동안, 나는 감사하게도 간병인으로 어머니를 돌볼 수 있었습니다. 어머니는 아주 고통스런 날에도, 침대에서 일어나기 전에 성경을 읽고 다른 사람들을 위해 기도하셨습니다.

어머니는 온종일 예수님과 함께 시간을 보내면서, 하나님을 온전히 의지하는 믿음과, 친절한 행동, 다른 사람을 격려하고 위해서 기도해주고 싶은 마음들을 표현하셨습니다. 어머니는 자신의 미소 띤 얼굴이 얼마나 주님의 사랑의 은혜로 빛나고 있는지 전혀 깨닫지 못하면서, 주님이 천국 본향으로 부르신 그날까지 주위 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 전하셨습니다.

모세는 하나님과 사십 일 밤낮을 대화한 후(출애굽기 34:28) 시내산을 내려왔습니다. 모세는 하나님과의 친밀한 관계가 실제로 그의 용모를 변화시켰다는 것을 전혀 알지 못했지만(29절), 이스라엘 백성들은 모세가 하나님과 더불어 말씀을 나누었다는 것을 알 수 있었습니다(30-32절). 모세는 계속해서 하나님을 만났고, 그의 주위 사람들의 삶에 계속 영향을 주었습니다 (33-35절).

우리는 하나님을 경험하는 것이 시간이 지나면서 우리를 어떻게 변화시키는지 보지 못할 수도 있고, 우리의 변화도 모세의 광채 나는 얼굴과 같은 그런 외관상 뚜렷이 드러나는 변화는 분명히 아닐 것입니다.
그러나 우리가 하나님과 더불어 시간을 보내고, 또 매일 조금씩 더 우리의 삶을 주님께 드릴 때, 우리는 주님의 사랑을 나타내 보여줄 수 있습니다. 주님께서 우리와 함께하신다는 증거가 우리 안에, 우리를 통해 보일 때, 하나님은 다른 사람들을 그분께로 더 가까이 이끄실 수 있습니다.

Reflecting God’s Love

I had the privilege of serving as my mom’s caregiver during her treatments at a live-in cancer care center. Even on her hardest days, she read Scripture and prayed for others before getting out of bed.

She spent time with Jesus daily, expressing her faith through her dependence on God, her kind deeds, and her desire to encourage and pray for others. Never realizing how much her smiling face glowed with the Lord’s loving grace, she shared God’s love with the people around her until the day He called her home to heaven.

After Moses spent forty days and forty nights communing with God (EX 34:28), he descended Mount Sinai. He had no idea his intimate connection with the Lord actually changed his appearance (V 29). But the Israelites could tell Moses had spoken with the Lord (VV 30–32). He continued meeting with God and influencing the lives of those around him (VV 33–35).

We might not be able to see how our experiences with God change us over time, and our transformation will definitely not be as physically apparent as Moses’s beaming face. But as we spend time with God and surrender our lives to Him more and more each day, we can reflect His love. God can draw others closer to Him as the evidence of His presence shows in and through us. - XOCHITL DIXON

은혜를 보여줌

미국 매스터스 골프 대회가 1934년에 시작된 이후, 2년 연속 우승을 한 선수는 단지 세 명 밖에 없습니다. 2016년 4월 10일에 열린 대회에서 22살의 조단 스피스가 그 네 번째 선수가 될 것이라고 예상했었습니다. 그러나 그는 마지막 아홉 홀에서 실수를 하여 공동 2위로 마쳤습니다. 이 실망스런 결과에도 불구하고, 스피스는 우승자 대니 윌렛에게 우승 축하와 함께 “골프보다 더 중요한” 그의 첫째 아이의 탄생을 축하해주는 은혜로운 모습을 보여주었습니다.

캐런 크라우스는 ‘뉴욕 타임즈’에 이렇게 썼습니다. “우승컵 수여식에 앉아 자신이 아닌 다른 사람의 사진을 찍는 모습을 지켜본 바로 직후에 큰 그림을 보는 데에는 은혜가 필요합니다.” 크라우스는 계속해서 말합니다. “스피스는 경기하는 한 주 내내 공을 잘 치지는 못했지만, 그의 인격은 손상 되지 않고 돋보였습니다.”

바울은 골로새에 있는 신자들에게 “외인에게 대해서는 지혜로 행하여 세월을 아끼라 너희 말을 항상 은혜 가운데서 소금으로 맛을 냄과 같이 하라 그리하면 각 사람에게 마땅히 대답할 것을 알리라” (골로새서 4:5-6)라고 권면했습니다.

하나님의 은혜를 값없이 받은 사람들로서, 승리했든 실패했든 인생의 어떤 상황에서도 주님의 은혜를 보여주는 것은 우리의 특권이며 소명입니다.

Showing Grace

The US Masters Golf Tournament began in 1934, and since then only three players have won it two years in a row. On April 10, 2016, it appeared that twenty-two-year-old Jordan Spieth would become the fourth. But he faltered on the last nine holes and finished in a tie for second. Despite his disappointing loss, Spieth was gracious toward tournament champion Danny Willett, congratulating him on his victory and on the birth of his first child, something “more important than golf.”

Writing in The New York Times , Karen Krouse said, “It takes grace to see the big picture so soon after having to sit through a trophy ceremony and watch someone else have his photograph taken.” Krouse continued, “Spieth’s ball-striking was off all week, but his character emerged unscathed.”

Paul urged the followers of Jesus in Colossae to “be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (COL 4:5–6).

As those who have freely received God’s grace, it is our privilege and calling to demonstrate it in every situation of life—win or lose. - DAVID MCCASLAND
