다른 사람들에 대한 관심

내 친구 제이미는 거대한 국제기업에서 일합니다. 입사 초기에, 한 사람이 그의 자리로 와서 대화를 나누게 되었는데, 제이미에게 그곳에서 무슨 일을 하는지 물었습니다. 자기 업무에 대해 그 사람에게 말한 뒤 제이미가 그의 이름을 묻자, 그는 “내 이름은 리치입니다.”라고 대답했습니다.

제이미는 “만나서 반갑습니다.”라고 말한 후 “그런데 여기서 무슨 일을 하십니까?” 라고 물었습니다.

“아, 나는 여기 사장입니다.”

제이미는 순간 이런 편하고 소박한 대화로 세계 최고 갑부 중의 한 사람에게 자기를 소개하고 있다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

자신을 찬양하고 “나를 높이 기리는 요즘 시대에, 이런 작은 이야기는 빌립보서에서 바울이 한 “아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고”(2:3)라는 중요한 말씀을 생각나게 해줍니다. 자기 자신이 아닌 다른 사람들에게 관심을 돌리는 사람들은 바울이 언급한 특징을 지닌 사람들입니다.

우리가 “[우리 자신들]보다 남을 낫게 여길”(3절) 때 그리스도의 겸손을 보여주고, “섬김을 받으려 함이 아니라 도리어 섬기려고”(마가복음 10:45) 오신 예수님을 그대로 보여주게 됩니다. 그리고 우리가 “종의 형체”(빌립보서 2:7)를 가질 때, 우리는 예수님의 마음을 품게 됩니다(5절).

오늘날 우리가 다른 사람들과 관계를 맺을 때, 우리 자신의 일만을 돌아보지 말고, 또한 “다른 사람들의 일”(4절)을 돌아보도록 합시다.

The Interests of Others

My friend Jaime works for a huge international corporation. In his early days with the company, a man came by his desk, struck up a conversation, and asked Jaime what he did there. After telling the man about his work, Jaime asked the man his name. “My name is Rich,” he replied.

“Nice to meet you,” Jaime answered. “And what do you do around here?”

“Oh, I am the owner.”

Jaime suddenly realized that this casual, humble conversation was his introduction to one of the richest men in the world.

In this day of self-glorification and the celebration of “me,” this little story can serve as a reminder of Paul’s important words in the book of Philippians: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain
conceit” (2:3). People who turn their attention to others and not on themselves have the characteristics Paul mentions.

When we “value others above [ourselves],” we demonstrate Christlike humility (V 3). We mirror Jesus, who came not “to be served, but to serve” (MARK 10:45). When we take “the very nature of a servant” (PHIL 2:7), we have the mindset of Jesus (V 5).

As we interact with others today, let’s not look on our own interests alone but also “to the interests of the others” (V 4). - DAVE BRANON

우리 죄가 사라졌다

어린 소녀였을 때, 나는 친구를 불러 집 근처의 선물가게에서 같이 물건을 둘러보고 있었습니다. 그런데, 놀랍게도 그 친구가 갑자기 크레용 모양의 알록달록한 머리핀을 한 움큼 내 주머니에 쑤셔 넣고는 물건 값도 내지 않은 채 나를 가게 문 밖으로 획 잡아당겼습니다. 일주일 동안 죄책감에 시달리다가 어머니에게 다가가 고백했는데, 고백과 동시에 눈물이 쏟아져 내렸습니다.

친구를 막지 못했던 나의 잘못된 선택을 슬퍼하면서, 나는 훔친 물건을 돌려주고 사과하며, 다시 훔치지 않겠다는 맹세를 했습니다. 가게 주인은 다시는 오지 말라고 했습니다. 하지만, 어머니가 나를 용서하시며 내가 그 일을 바로 잡기 위해 최선을 다했다는 확신을 주셨기 때문에, 나는 그날 밤 평안히 잠을 잤습니다.

Our Guilt Is Gone

As a young girl, I invited a friend to browse with me through a gift shop near my home. She shocked me, though, by shoving a handful of colorful crayon-shaped barrettes into my pocket and yanking me out the door of the shop without paying for them. Guilt gnawed at me for a week before I approached my mom—my confession pouring out as quickly as my tears.

Grieved over my bad choice of not resisting my friend, I returned the stolen items, apologized, and vowed never to steal again. The owner told me never to come back. But because my mom forgave me and assured me that I had done my best to make things right, I slept peacefully that night.

King David also rested in forgiveness through confession (PS 32:1–2). He had hidden his sins against Bathsheba and Uriah (2 SAM 11–12) until his “strength was sapped” (PS 32:3–4). But once David refused to “cover up” his wrongs, the Lord erased his guilt (V 5). God protected him “from trouble” and wrapped him in “songs of deliverance” (V 7). David rejoiced because the “L ORD ’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him” (V 10).

We can’t choose the consequences of our sins or control people’s responses when we confess and seek forgiveness. But the Lord can empower us to enjoy freedom from the bondage of sin and peace through confession, as He confirms that our guilt is gone—forever. - XOCHITL DIXON

수확할 수 있게 무르익음

늦은 여름날 우리는 영국에 있는 뉴 포레스트 국립공원으로 산책을 가 근처에 말들이 뛰노는 것을 보면서 야생에서 자라는 블랙베리를 따 먹으며 즐거운 시간을 가졌습니다. 아마도 오래 전에 누군가가 심어 놓았을 달콤한 과일의 수확을 즐기면서, 나는 제자들에게 하신 예수님의 말씀을 생각하였습니다. “내가 너희로 노력하지 아니한 것을 거두러 보내었노니” (요한복음 4:38).

나는 그 말씀에서 엿볼 수 있는 하나님 나라의 너그러움을 아주 좋아합니다. 하나님은 우리도 다른 사람이 수고한 것의 열매를 즐기게 해주십니다. 예를 들어, 우리가 한 친구와 예수님에 대한 우리의 사랑을 나누었는데, 우리는 몰랐지만, 그녀의 가족이 그녀를 위해 여러 해 동안 계속 기도해 왔을 때와 같은 경우가 그렇습니다. 나는 또한 예수님의 말씀에 함축되어 있는 다른 제한적인 의미도 좋아합니다. 왜냐하면 우리가 뿌린 씨앗을 우리가 결코 추수할 수 없을지 모르지만, 다른 누군가가 그것을 수확할 수 있을 것이기 때문입니다. 그렇기 때문에 우리는 결과에 대해 책임을 져야 한다는 생각에 현혹되지 않고 우리 앞에 놓인 일에 편안한 마음을 가질 수 있습니다. 결국, 하나님의 일은 우리에게 달려 있지 않습니다. 하나님은 풍성한 수확을 위한 모든 자원을 갖고 계시고, 우리는 그 안에서 각 역할을 맡는 특권을 누리는 것입니다.

Ripe for Harvest

In late summer, we went for a walk in the New Forest in England and had fun picking the blackberries that grew in the wild while watching the horses frolicking nearby. As I enjoyed the bounty of the sweet fruit planted by others perhaps many years before, I thought of Jesus’s words to His disciples: “I sent you to reap what you have not worked for” (JOHN 4:38).

I love the generosity of God’s kingdom reflected in those words. He lets us enjoy the fruits of someone else’s labors, such as when we share our love for Jesus with a friend whose family unbeknown to us—has been praying for her for years. I also love the implied limits of Jesus’s words, for we may plant seeds that we will never harvest but someone else may. Therefore, we can rest in the tasks before us, not being hoodwinked into thinking that we are responsible for the outcomes. God’s work, after all, doesn’t depend on us. He has all of the resources for a bountiful harvest, and we are privileged to play a role in it.

I wonder what fields ready for harvest are before you? Before me? May we heed Jesus’s loving instruction: “Open your eyes and look at the fields!” (V 35). - AMY BOUCHER PYE

가만히 있으라

“우리는 인류가 지난 역사 가운데 만들어냈던 모든 정보보다 더 많은 정보를 지난 5년간 만들어냈습니다. 그리고 그런 시대가 계속 오고 있습니다.”(데니얼 레비틴, ‘잘 정리된 마음: 정보의 홍수 시대에 똑바로 생각하기’의 저자). “어떤 의미에서 우리는 과도하게 자극적인 것에 중독되어 가고 있습니다.” 라고 레비틴은 말합니다. 끊임없이 쏟아지는 정보와 지식이 우리 마음을 지배합니다. 미디어가 넘쳐나는 오늘날의 환경 속에서 잠잠하고, 생각하고, 기도할 시간을 갖는 것이 점점 더 어려워집니다.

시편 46편 10절은 “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다”라고 말하며, 우리에게 하나님께 집중할 시간을 가질 필요가 있다는 것을 상기시켜줍니다. 많은 사람들이 말씀을 읽고 기도하고 하나님의 위대하심과 선하심을 생각하는 “경건의 시간”이 매일의 삶에서 아주 중요한 부분이라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 우리가 시편 46편의 기자와 같이 “하나님은 우리의 피난처시요 힘이시니 환난 중에 만날 큰 도움이시라”(1절)는 사실을 경험할 때, 우리의 두려움은 물러가고(2절), 우리의 초점이 세상의 혼란에서 하나님의 평화로 옮겨져 우리 주님께서 주관하신다는 확신이 생기게 됩니다(10절).

Be Still

“We’ve created more information in the last five years than in all of human history before it, and it’s coming at us all the time” (Daniel Levitin, author of The Organized Mind: Thinking Straight in the Age of Information Overload ). “In a sense,” Levitin says, “we become addicted to the hyperstimulation.” The constant barrage of news and knowledge can dominate our minds. In today’s environment of media bombardment, it becomes increasingly difficult to find time to be quiet, to think, and to pray.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God,” reminding us of the necessity to take time to focus on the Lord. Many people find that a “quiet time” is an essential part of each day—a time to read the Bible, pray, and consider the goodness and greatness of God.

When we, like the writer of Psalm 46, experience the reality that “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (V 1), it drives our fear away (V 2), shifts our focus from the world’s turmoil to God’s peace, and creates a quiet confidence that our Lord is in control (V 10).

No matter how chaotic the world may become around us, we can find quietness and strength in our heavenly Father’s love and power. - DAVID MCCASLAND

목사님이 한 늙은 참전용사의 장례식에서 말씀을 전하면서, 고인이 지금 어디에 있을까에 대해 생각해보자고 말했습니다. 그러나 그때 사람들에게 하나님을 어떻게 알 수 있는지를 말하는 대신, 그는 성경 어디에서도 찾을 수 없는 것들에 대해 추측하며 말했습니다. ‘왜 소망에 대해 말하지 않지?’ 하고 나는 생각했습니다.

마지막으로 그는 폐회 찬송을 인도 했는데, 우리가 일어서서 “주 하나님 지으신 모든 세계”를 부를 때 사람들이 그들의 영혼 깊은 곳에서 하나님을 찬양하기 시작했습니다. 그 순간 방 전체의 영적인 분위기가 바뀌었습니다. 갑자기, 놀랍게도 3절 가사를 부를 때 나의 감동이 내 목소리를 압도하였습니다.

우리가 그 위대한 찬송을 부를 때까지 나는 그 장례식에 하나님께서 과연 나타나실까 궁금했었습니다. 그러나 사실 하나님은 절대로 떠나지 않으십니다. 에스더서에 이 사실이 나타나 있습니다. 유대인은 추방되었고 권세가들은 그들을 죽이려 하였습니다. 하지만 그토록 캄캄한 순간에 하나님을 믿지 않는 왕이 종 되었던 이스라엘 백성을 진멸하려 했던 무리에게서 그들 스스로를 지킬 수 있는 권리를 부여해주었습니다 (에스더 8:11-13). 그들은성공적으로 자신들을 방어하였고, 잔치를 베풀어 즐겼습니다(9:17-19).

장례식장에서 부른 찬송가 가사 속에서 하나님이 나타나시는 것은 전혀 놀라울 일이 아닙니다. 무엇보다 하나님께서 대량 학살 시도를 경축할 일로 바꾸셨고, 십자가 위의 죽음을 부활과 구원으로 바꾸셨습니다!

The Turn

As the minister spoke at a funeral for an old military veteran, he mused about where the deceased might be. But then, instead of telling the people how they could know God, he speculated about things not found anywhere in Scripture. Where is the hope? I thought.

At last he asked us to turn to a closing hymn. And as we rose to sing “How Great Thou Art,” people began to praise God from the depths of their souls. Within moments, the spirit of the entire room had changed. Suddenly, surprisingly, in the middle of the third verse my emotions overwhelmed my voice.

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in; That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.

Until we sang that great hymn, I had wondered if God was going to show up at that funeral. In reality, He never leaves. A look at the book of Esther reveals this truth. The Jews were in exile, and powerful people wanted to kill them. Yet at the darkest moment, a godless king granted the right to the enslaved Israelites to defend themselves against those who sought their demise (EST 8:11–13). A successful defense and a celebration ensued (9:17–19).

It should be no surprise when God shows up in the words of a hymn at a funeral. After all, He turned an attempted genocide into a celebration and a crucifixion into resurrection and salvation! - TIM GUSTAFSON

슬픔에서 기쁨으로

켈리에게 임신 중에 합병증이 생겨 의사들이 걱정했습니다. 그리고 그녀가 오랜 시간 동안 진통하자 의사들은 그녀를 급히 옮겨 제왕절개 수술을 했습니다. 하지만 그 지독한 시련에도 불구하고, 새로 태어난 아들을 안았을 때 켈리는 고통을 신속히 잊어버렸습니다. 기쁨이 고통을 대체한 것입니다.

성경은 이 진리를 확인시켜줍니다. “여자가 해산하게 되면 그 때가 이르렀으므로 근심하나 아기를 낳으면 세상에 사람 난 기쁨으로 말미암아 그 고통을 다시 기억하지 아니하느니라”(요한복음 16:21). 예수님은 제자들에게 이 예를 사용하셔서, 주님이 곧 떠나실 것이기 때문에 그들이 슬퍼하겠지만, 주님을 다시 보게 될 때 슬픔이 기쁨으로 바뀔 것이라고 강조하셨습니다(20-22절).

예수님은 자신의 죽음과 부활, 그리고 그 후에 따르게 될 일을 언급하신 것이었습니다. 예수님이 부활하시자 제자들은 기뻐했고, 주님은 40일 동안 제자들과 함께 보내시면서 그들을 가르치시다가, 그들을 다시 남겨두시고 하늘로 올라가셨습니다 (사도행전 1:3). 그러나 예수님은 그들을 슬픔에 잠긴 채로 남겨두지 않으셨습니다. 성령께서 그들을 기쁨으로 가득 채워주실 것이었습니다 (요한복음 16:7-15; 사도행전 13:52).

우리는 한 번도 예수님의 얼굴을 대면해 보지는 못했지만, 믿는 자로서 언젠가 그렇게 되리라는 확신을 갖고 있습니다. 그날에는 우리가 이 세상에서 겪는 고통을 잊어버리게 될 것입니다. 그러나 그때까지도 주님은 기쁨이 없는 채로 우리를 남겨두지 않으셨습니다. 주님은 우리에게 성령님을 주셨습니다(로마서 15:13; 베드로전서 1:8-9).

언젠가 우리의 슬픔이 기쁨으로 바뀌게 될 것이다!

From Grief to Joy

Kelly’s pregnancy brought complications, and doctors were concerned. During her long labor, they decided to whisk her away for a Cesarean section. But despite the ordeal, Kelly quickly forgot her pain when she held her newborn son. Joy had replaced anguish.

Scripture affirms this truth: “A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world” (JOHN 16:21). Jesus used this illustration with His disciples to emphasize that though they would grieve because He would be leaving soon, that grief would turn to joy when they saw Him again (VV 20–22).

Jesus was referring to His death and resurrection—and what followed. After His resurrection, to the disciples’ joy, Jesus spent another forty days walking with and teaching them before ascending and leaving them once again (ACTS 1:3). Yet Jesus did not leave them grief-stricken. The Holy Spirit would fill them with joy (JOHN 16:7–15; ACTS 13:52).

Though we have never seen Jesus face to face, as believers we have the assurance that one day we will. In that day, the anguish we face in this earth will be forgotten. But until then, the Lord has not left us without joy—He has given us His Spirit (ROM 15:13; 1 PETER 1:8–9). ALYSON KIEDA

우리가 원본이다

우리 각자는 하나님의 손으로 만들어진 원본입니다. 스스로 만들어진 남자나 여자는 없습니다. 아무도 혼자 힘으로 재능을 갖거나 늠름해지거나, 영리해진 사람은 없습니다. 하나님은 우리 각자를 직접 만드셨습니다. 그분은 말할 수 없는 사랑으로 우리를 생각하시며 지으셨습니다.

하나님은 우리의 몸과 마음과 영혼을 만드셨습니다. 그리고 그게 끝이 아니라, 하나님은 아직도 우리를 만들고 계십니다. “너희 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라”(빌립보서 1:6)라는 성경말씀처럼 하나님이 전념하시는 목적은 우리의 성숙입니다. 하나님은 우리를 더 용감하고, 더 강하고, 더 순수하고, 더 평화롭고, 더 사랑스럽고, 덜 이기적인 사람으로, 즉 우리가 항상 그렇게 되기를 원했던 바로 그런 사람으로 만들고 계십니다.

“[여호와의] 인자하심이 영원하고 그의 성실하심이 대대에 이르리로다”(시편 100:5). 하나님은 언제나 우리를 사랑하셨고(“영원”은 양방향으로 갑니다), 우리에게 끝까지 신실하실 것입니다.

우리는 영원히 지속되는 사랑을 받았고, 하나님은 결코 우리를 포기하지 않으실 것입니다. 그것이 기쁨을 가지고 “노래하면서 그의 앞에 나아갈”(2절) 좋은 이유입니다!

만약 우리가 곡조를 가지고 노래할 수 없다면, 하나님께 크게 외치십시오. “여호와께 즐거이 부를지어다”(1절).

하나님 아버지, 제 안에서 역사하고 계심에 감사드립니다. 저는 변하기 어렵다는 것을 알고 있으며, 때로는 어떻게 변해야 할지 또는 변할 수는 있을지 의문도 듭니다. 그러나 하나님께서 제 안에서 계속해서 역사하고 계신다는 것과, 나중에 뒤돌아볼 때 하나님께서 저를 성장시키신 것을 보게 될 것을 압니다. 감사합니다!

영적인 성장은 믿음이 자라갈 때 일어난다.

You’re an Original

Each of us is an original from God’s hand. There are no selfmade men or women. No one ever became talented, buffed, or bright all by himself or herself. God made each of us all by Himself. He thought of us and formed us out of His unspeakable love.

God made your body, mind, and soul. And He isn’t done with you; He is still making you. His single-minded purpose is our maturity: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (PHIL 1:6). God is making you braver, stronger, purer, more peaceful, more loving, less selfish—the kind of person you’ve perhaps always wanted to be.

“[God’s] unfailing love continues forever and his faithfulness continues to each generation” (PS 100:5 NLT ). God has always loved you (“forever” goes both ways), and He will be faithful to you to the end.

You’ve been given a love that lasts forever and a God who will never give up on you. That’s a good reason to have joy and to “come before him with joyful songs”! (V 2).

평화로운 가정의 약속

6천 5백만 명. 그것은 오늘날 갈등과 박해 때문에 그들의 집을 등져야 했던, 우리 세계의 난민의 숫자입니다. 이 숫자는 지금껏 그 어느 때보다 많은 숫자입니다. 유엔은 모든 아동들이 교육을 받고, 모든 성인들이 의미 있는 일을 찾고, 또 모든 가정이 집을 가질 수 있도록 난민들을 수용하는 데에 협력하자고 각국 지도자들에게 탄원했습니다.

위기에 처한 난민들을 위한 집을 짓는 꿈은 나에게 무자비한 앗수르 군대가 유다 백성들의 집을 짓밟았을 때 하나님께서 그들에게 약속하신 말씀을 생각나게 합니다. 하나님은 미가 선지자에게 백성들에게 그들의 성전과 그들이 사랑하는 예루살렘 성을 잃게 될 것이라고 경고하라고 하시면서, 동시에 그 손실 이후의 아름다운 미래를 약속해주셨습니다.

미가는 하나님이 세상 사람들을 그분께로 부르실 날이 올 것이라고 말했습니다. 폭력이 그치고, 전쟁 무기들이 농기구가 될 것이며, 하나님의 부르심에 응답하는 모든 사람들이 하나님의 나라에서 평화로운 집과 생산적인 삶을 갖게 될 것입니다(4:3-4).

오늘날 세상 많은 사람들에게, 그리고 아마 당신에게도, 안전한 집이 현실이라기보다는 아직 꿈으로 남아 있을지도 모릅니다. 그러나 그런 평화로운 집을 현실로 만들기 위해 비록 지금 기다리고 일하고 또 기도하고 있을지라도, 우리는 모든 나라 백성들을 위한 집에 대해 하나님께서 오래 전에 하신 약속을 의지할 수 있습니다.

Promise of a Peaceful Home

Sixty-five million. That’s the number of refugees in our world today—people who have had to leave their homes due to conflict and persecution—and it’s higher than it’s ever been. The UN has petitioned leaders to work together in receiving refugees so that every child will get an education, every adult will find meaningful work, and every family will have a home.

The dream of making homes for refugees in crisis reminds me of a promise God made to the nation of Judah when ruthless Assyrian armies threatened their homes. The Lord commissioned the prophet Micah to warn the people that they would lose their temple and their beloved city of Jerusalem. But God also promised a beautiful future beyond the loss.

A day will come, said Micah, when God will call the peoples of the world to Himself. Violence will end. Weapons of war will become farming tools, and every person who answers God’s call will find a peaceful home and a productive life in His kingdom (4:3–4).

For many in the world today, and maybe for you, a safe home remains more a dream than a reality. But we can rely on God’s ancient promise of a home for people of all nations, even as we wait and work and pray for those peaceful homes to become a reality. - AMY PETERSON

두려움이 아닌 믿음

“우리 남편이 외국에서 승진 제시를 받았어. 하지만 내가 집을 떠나는 것을 두려워하니까 남편이 마지못해 그 제안을 거절했어.”라고 내 친구가 이야기했습니다. 그녀는 그런 큰 변화에 대한 염려가 어떻게 그녀로 하여금 새로운 모험을 받아들이지 못하게 했는지를 말하면서, 집을 떠나지 않아서 놓친 것이 무엇인지 가끔 궁금하다고 말했습니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 “젖과 꿀”(출애굽기 33:3)이 흐르는 풍요롭고도 비옥한 땅으로 부름 받았을 때 걱정 때문에 마비될 지경이었습니다. 그리고 큰 도시에 사는 힘 센 사람들의 소식을 듣자(민수기 13:28) 그들은 두려워하기 시작했습니다. 대부분의 이스라엘 백성들은 그 땅으로 들어가기를 거부했습니다.

하지만 여호수아와 갈렙은 “여호와는 우리와 함께 하시느니라 그들을 두려워하지 말라”(민수기 14:9)고 말하며 주님을 신뢰할 것을 촉구하였습니다. 비록 그곳에 있는 사람들이 크게 보인다 하더라도, 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님이 그들과 함께하신다는 것을 믿을 수 있었습니다.

내 친구는 이스라엘 백성처럼 다른 나라로 이주하라고 명령 받은 것은 아니었습니다. 하지만 그녀는 두려움이 새로운 기회를 막아버리도록 내버려둔 것을 후회했습니다. 당신은 어떻습니까? 지금 두려운 상황에 직면해 있습니까?

Not Fear but Faith

“My husband was offered a promotion in another country, but I feared leaving our home, so he reluctantly declined the offer,” my friend shared with me. She explained how apprehension over such a big change kept her from embracing a new adventure, and that she sometimes wondered what they missed in not moving.

The Israelites let their anxieties paralyze them when they were called to inhabit a rich and fertile land that flowed “with milk and honey” (EX 33:3). When they heard the reports of the powerful people in large cities (V 27), they started to fear. The majority of the Israelites rejected the call to enter the land.

But Joshua and Caleb urged them to trust in the Lord, saying, “Do not be afraid of the people in the land” for the “ LORD is with us” (V 9). Although the people there appeared large, they could trust the Lord to be with them.

My friend wasn’t commanded to move to another country like the Israelites were, yet she regretted letting fear close off the opportunity. What about you—do you face a fearful situation? If so, know that the Lord is with you and will guide you. With His never-failing love, we can move forward in faith. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

주님의 날개 아래

‘보호’에 대해 생각할 때, 새의 깃털이 자동으로 떠오르지 않습니다. 하지만 새의 깃털이 보호하는 데는 허술해보일지 몰라도, 눈에 보이는 것 이상의 것이 있습니다.

새의 깃털은 하나님의 디자인을 보여주는 놀라운 예입니다. 깃털에는 매끄러운 부분과 폭신한 부분이 있습니다. 깃털의 매끄러운 부분에는 지퍼의 톱니처럼 서로를 묶는 조그만 갈고리를 가진 딱딱한 가시가 있습니다. 폭신한 부분은 새를 따뜻하게 해줍니다. 두 부분의 깃털이 함께 새를 바람과 비로부터 보호해줍니다. 하지만 많은 아기새들은 폭신한 솜털에 덮여 있을 뿐, 아직 깃털이 다 자라지 않은 상태에 있기 때문에, 어미새가 바람과 비로부터 아기새들을 보호하기 위해 둥지 안에서 어미 자신의 깃털로 덮어줍니다.

시편 91편 4절의 “그가 너를 그의 깃으로 덮으시리니”와 다른 성경구절(시편 17:8 참조)에서 보이는 하나님의 이미지는 위로와 보호의 이미지입니다. 그때 우리 마음속에 떠오르는 이미지는 어미새가 그 새끼들을 날개깃으로 덮어주는 모습입니다. 그들의 팔로 무서운 폭풍이나 상처를 피할 수 있게 안전한 장소를 제공해주는 부모처럼, 평강으로 함께하시는 하나님은 인생의 감정의 폭풍으로부터 안전과 보호를 제공해줍니다.

비록 우리가 고난과 아픔을 겪더라도, 우리의 얼굴이 하나님께로 향하는 한 두려움 없이 그것들에 맞설 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 “피난처”이십니다(91:2,4,9).

Under His Wings

When I think of protection, I don’t automatically think of a bird’s feathers. Though a bird’s feathers might seem like a flimsy form of protection, there is more to them than meets the eye.

Bird feathers are an amazing example of God’s design. Feathers have a smooth part and a fluffy part. The smooth part of the feather has stiff barbs with tiny hooks that lock together like the prongs of a zipper. The fluffy part keeps a bird warm. Together both parts of the feather protect the bird from wind and rain. But many baby birds are covered in a fluffy down and their feathers haven’t fully developed. So a mother bird has to cover them in the nest with her own feathers to protect them from wind and rain.

The image of God “[covering] us with his feathers” in Psalm 91:4 and in other Bible passages (SEE PS 17:8) is one of comfort and protection. The image that comes to mind is a mother bird covering her little ones with her feathers. Like a parent whose arms are a safe place to retreat from a scary storm or a hurt, God’s comforting presence provides safety and protection from life’s emotional storms.

Though we go through trouble and heartache, we can face them without fear as long as our faces are turned toward God. He is our “refuge” (91:2, 4, 9). - LINDA WASHINGTON
