씨 뿌리기

나는 한 여인으로부터 다음과 같은 놀라운 이메일을 받았습니다. “1958년 퍼트남시에서 제가 초등학교 1학년이었을 때 당신의 어머니가 담임 선생님이셨습니다. 그분은 훌륭한 선생님이셨고, 아주 친절했지만 엄격하셨습니다. 선생님은 우리에게 시편 23편을 공부해서 학생들 앞에서 외우게 했기 때문에 나는 두려웠습니다. 그러나 내가 기독교인이 된 1997년까지 성경을 접한 경우는 그때가 유일했습니다. 지금 그것을 다시 읽으니 맥케슬랜드 선생님의 기억이 홍수처럼 밀려옵니다.”

예수님은 많은 군중들에게 각기 다른 종류의 땅, 즉 길가, 돌밭, 가시떨기, 그리고 좋은 땅에 씨앗을 뿌린 농부에 대한 비유를 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 13:1-9). 어떤 씨들은 아예 자라지도 못하지만, “좋은 땅에 뿌리웠다는 것은 말씀을 듣고 깨닫는 자니 결실하여 혹 백배, 혹 육십 배, 혹 삼십 배가 된다”(23절)고 하셨습니다.

어머니는 20년 동안 공립학교에서 1학년을 가르치셨는데, 읽기와 쓰기, 산수를 가르치면서 친절과 하나님 사랑의 메시지의 씨앗도 함께 뿌렸던 것입니다.

어머니의 제자는 이메일을 이렇게 끝맺었습니다. “물론 내 인생에서 나중에 그리스도인의 삶을 살며 다른 영향도 받았지만, [시편 23편] 과 [당신 어머니의] 부드러운 성품이 언제나 내 마음 앞에 자리 잡고 있습니다.”

오늘 심은 하나님의 사랑의 씨앗이 엄청난 수확을 거둬들일 수도 있습니다.

Scattering Seeds

I received a wonderful email from a woman who wrote, “Your mom was my first-grade teacher at Putnam City in 1958. She was a great teacher and very kind, but strict! She made us learn the 23rd Psalm and say it in front of the class, and I was horrified. But it was the only contact I had with the Bible until 1997 when I became a Christian. And the memories of Mrs. McCasland came flooding back as I re-read it.”

Jesus told a large crowd a parable about the farmer who sowed his seed that fell on different types of ground—a hard path, rocky ground, clumps of thorns, and good soil (MATT. 13:1–9). While some seeds never grew, “the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it” and “produces a crop yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown” (V. 23).

During the twenty years my mother taught first grade in public schools, along with reading, writing, and arithmetic she scattered seeds of kindness and the message of God’s love.

Her former student’s email concluded, “I have had other influences in my Christian walk later in life, of course. But my heart always returns to [Psalm 23] and [your mom’s] gentle nature.”

캠핑 시편

남편과 함께 산책하러 갈 때 우리는 사진기를 가지고 가서 우리 발아래에 있는 마치 세상의 축소판 같은 식물들을 아주 가까이서 찍습니다. 밤새 돋아나 숲을 밝은 오렌지색과 빨강과 노랑으로 점점이 찍어놓는 버섯에서조차 우리는 놀라운 다양성과 아름다움을 봅니다.

살면서 우리 주위에서 순간순간 보이는 것들은 내 눈을 버섯뿐 아니라 하늘의 별도 만드신 창조주께로 향하도록 영감을 불어넣어줍니다. 하나님은 무한한 영역과 다양성을 지닌 세계를 만드셨습니다. 그리고 당신과 나를 만드셔서 이 아름다운 세계의 바로 한 가운데 두셔서 그것을 즐기고 다스리게 하셨습니다(창세기 1:27-28; 시편 8:6-8).

나의 생각은 이제 우리가 모닥불 주위에 둘러앉아 읽던, 우리 가족의 “캠핑 시편”으로 향합니다. “여호와 우리 주여 주의 이름이 온 땅에 어찌 그리 아름다운지요 주의 영광이 하늘을 덮었나이다......주의 손가락으로 만드신 주의 하늘과 주께서 베풀어 두신 달과 별들을 내가 보오니 사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 생각하시며 인자가 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 돌보시나이까”(시편 8:1-4).

이 세상을 장엄하게 창조하신 위대하신 하나님이 당신과 나를 돌보아주신다는 사실이 얼마나 놀라운지요!

Camping Psalms

When my husband and I go for nature walks, we bring our cameras and take close-ups of the plants at our feet, which are like microcosms of the world. What amazing variety and beauty we see, even in the fungi that spring up overnight and dot the woods with splashes of bright orange, red, and yellow!

The snapshots of life that surround us inspire me to lift my eyes to the Maker who created not only mushrooms but also the stars in the heavens. He designed a world of infinite scope and variety. And He made you and me and placed us in the very middle of this beauty to enjoy and to rule over it (GEN. 1:27–28; PS. 8:6–8).

My thoughts turn to one of our family’s “camping psalms”—psalms we read as we sit around the fire. “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. . . . When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (PS. 8:1–4).

보혜사

집에서 천마일(1600 킬로미터) 떨어져 있는 도시에서 공부하기 위해 비행기에 탑승하면서, 나는 긴장감과 외로움을 느꼈습니다.그러나 비행 중 나는 예수님이 제자들에게 성령님이 함께 하셔서 위로해주실 거라고 약속하셨던 것이 기억났습니다.

예수님이 “내가 떠나가는 것이 너희에게 유익이라”(요한복음16:7)라고 말씀하셨을 때, 주님의 친구들은 몹시 당황했을 것입니다. 주님이 행하신 기적을 목격하고 주님의 가르침을 배웠던 그들이 어떻게 주님 없이 더
좋아질 수 있었겠습니까? 그러나 예수님은 자신이 떠나게 되면 그 후에 보혜사, 즉 성령께서 오실 거라고 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다.

예수님은 이 땅에서의 마지막 시간이 가까워지자, 그분의 죽음과 승천을 이해하는 데 도움이 되도록 제자들에게 말씀해주셨습니다(요한복음 14-17장, 오늘날 “마지막 설교”로 불림). 이 대화의 중심은 앞으로 오실 보혜사 성령님으로, 그분은 그들과 함께 계시고(14:16-17), 그들을 가르치시며(15:15), 주님을 증언하시고(26절), 그들을 인도하실(16:13) 분이셨습니다.

The Advocate

As I boarded the airplane to study in a city a thousand miles from home, I felt nervous and alone. But during the flight, I remembered how Jesus promised His disciples the comforting presence of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus’s friends must have felt bewildered when He told them, “It is for your good that I am going away” (JOHN 16:7). How could they who witnessed His miracles and learned from His teaching be better off without Him? But Jesus told them that if He left, then the Advocate—the Holy Spirit—would come.

Jesus, nearing His last hours on earth, shared with His disciples (in John 14–17, today known as the “Farewell Discourse”) to help them understand His death and ascension. Central in this conversation was the coming Holy Spirit, an advocate who would be with them (14:16–17), teaching (15:15), testifying (V. 26), and guiding them (16:13).

We who have accepted God’s offer of new life have been given this gift of His Spirit living within us. From Him we receive so much: He convicts us of our sins and helps us to repent. He brings us comfort when we ache, strength to bear hardships, wisdom to understand God’s teaching, hope and faith to believe, love to share.

We can rejoice that Jesus sent us the Advocate. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

바이올렛과 함께 노래 부르기

바이올렛이라는 이름의 할머니가 자메이카의 진료소 침대에 앉아, 자신을 방문한 십대아이들 몇몇에게 미소를 지어보였습니다. 한낮의 뜨겁고 끈적한 공기가 조금도 누그러지지 않고 여러 명이 함께 쓰는 그녀의 작은 수용시설 안으로 흘러 들어와도 그녀는 불평하지 않았습니다. 대신에 그녀는 부를 노래를 찾으려고 고민하기 시작했습니다. 그러더니 환하게 웃으며 노래를 불렀습니다. “나는 달리네, 나는 뛰고 또 뛰네, 주님을 찬양하네!” 노래를 부르면서 그녀는 마치 달리는 것처럼 팔을 앞뒤로 흔들었습니다. 둘러선 사람들이 눈물을 흘렸습니다. 바이올렛에게는 다리가 없었기 때문입니다. 그녀는 노래를 부를 수 있는 것은 “예수님이 나를 사랑하시고 천국에선 내게 뛸 수 있는 다리가 있을 것이기” 때문이라고 말했습니다.

바이올렛의 기쁨과 천국에의 희망찬 기대는 빌립보서 1장에서 삶과 죽음의 문제를 언급하는 바울의 말을 새롭게 울려줍니다. “그러나 만일 육신으로 사는 이것이 내 일의 열매일진대...... 내가 그 둘 사이에 끼었으니 차라리 세상을 떠나서 그리스도와 함께 있는 것이 훨씬 더 좋은 일이라 그렇게 하고 싶으나”(22-23절).

우리 각자는 천국 안식에의 약속을 간절히 구하게 만드는 어려운 시기들을 맞이합니다. 그러나 바이올렛이 그녀의 현재 상황에도 불구하고 기쁨을 보여주었던 것처럼, 우리도 이 땅에서 주님께서 주시는 풍성한 삶과 우리를 기다리고 있을 궁극적인 기쁨을 위해 계속 “달리며 뛰며 주님을 찬양”할 수 있습니다.

Singing with Violet

An elderly woman named Violet sat on her bed in a Jamaican infirmary and smiled as some teenagers stopped to visit with her. The hot, sticky, midday air came into her little group home unabated, but she didn’t complain. Instead, she began wracking her mind for a song to sing. Then a huge smile appeared and she sang, “I am running, skipping, jumping, praising theLord!” As she sang, she swung her arms back and forth as if she were running. Tears came to those around her, for Violet had no legs. She was singing because, she said, “Jesus loves me—and in heaven I will have legs to run with.”

Violet’s joy and hopeful anticipation of heaven give new vibrancy to Paul’s words in Philippians 1 when he referred to life-and-death issues. “If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me,” he said. “I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far” (VV. 22–23).

Each of us faces tough times that may cause us to long for the promise of heavenly relief. But as Violet showed us joy despite her current circumstances, we too can keep “running, skipping, praising the Lord”—both for the abundant life He gives
us here and for the ultimate joy that awaits us. - DAVE BRANON

불이 켜져 있지 않은 길

가족 휴가를 보내고 집으로 향하고 있을 때, 우리는 오레곤주 중부 지방의 어느 황량한 곳을 지나가게 되었습니다. 해가 지고 거의 두 시간 동안 우리는 깊은 협곡을 지나고 사막 고원 지역을 가로질러 차를 몰았습니다. 그동안 스무 대도 안 되는 차의 전조등만이 어둠을 뚫고 빛을 비출 뿐이었습니다. 마침내 달이 지평선 위로 떠올랐고, 길이 언덕 위로 가면 눈에 보였다가 저지대를 지날 때는 가려져 보이지 않았습니다. 딸아이는 달빛이 하나님이 계신다는 것을 생각나게 해준다고 말했습니다. 그것을 봐야만 하나님이 계신 것을 아느냐고 묻자, 딸은 “아뇨, 그런데 확실히 도움은 돼요.”라고 대답했습니다.

모세가 죽은 후 여호수아는 이스라엘 백성들의 지도자 자리를 이어 받아 하나님이 택한 백성들을 약속의 땅으로 데려갈 임무를 부여받았습니다. 신성한 사명임에도 불구하고 여호수아는 위압적인 그 일의 특성상 틀림없이 두려움을 느꼈을 것입니다. 그래서 하나님은 은혜롭게 여호수아와 함께 하시겠다고 확신시켜주셨습니다(여호수아 1:9).

인생 여정에서도 종종 미지의 영역을 지나게 됩니다. 앞길이 명확하게 보이지 않는 시기를 지나기도 합니다. 하나님의 계획이 언제나 우리에게 명백하지는 않지만, 하나님은 “세상 끝 날까지 항상”
(마태복음 28:20) 우리와 함께 하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 우리가 어떤 불확실한 일이나 어려운 일에 직면하게 되더라도, 어찌 이보다 더 큰 확신을 기대할 수 있겠습니까? 길의 불이 켜져 있지 않을 때라도 빛이신 주님이 우리와 함께 계십니다.

Unlighted Paths

As we ventured home from a family vacation, the road took us through some desolate parts of central Oregon. For nearly two hours after dusk we drove through deep canyons and across desert plateaus. Fewer than twenty sets of headlights punctuated the darkness. Eventually the moon rose on the horizon, visible to us when the road crested hills but eclipsed when we traveled through the lowlands. My daughter remarked on its light, calling it a reminder of God’s presence. I asked whether she needed to see it to know He was there. She replied, “No, but it sure helps.”

After Moses’s death, Joshua inherited leadership of the Israelites and was charged to take God’s chosen people into the Promised Land. Despite his divine commission, Joshua must have felt challenged by the daunting nature of his task. God graciously offered Joshua assurance to be with him on the journey ahead (JOSH. 1:9).

The road of life often travels through uncharted territory. We voyage through seasons when the path ahead isn’t clearly visible. God’s plan may not always be apparent to us, but He has promised to be with us “always, to the very end of the age” (MATT. 28:20). What greater assurance could we hope for, no matter what uncertainty or challenge we might face? Even when the path is unlit, the Light is with us. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

너무 좋아 나누지 않을 수 없는

법원에서 재판이 열리는 동안 증인들은 방관자나 구경꾼보다 더 중요합니다. 그들은 적극적인 참가자로서 재판의 결과를 결정하는 데 도움을 줍니다. 우리가 그리스도를 증언하는 것도 같은 이치입니다. 우리는 절대적으로 중요한 사건, 즉 예수님의 죽음과 부활의 진리에 있어서 적극적인 참가자가 되어야 합니다.

세례 요한이 사람들에게 예수님이 세상의 빛이라고 말할 때, 그는 예수님에 대해 알고 있는 것을 선포한 것입니다. 그리고 그 일을 기록했던 예수님의 제자 요한은 예수님과의 경험을 이렇게 증언했습니다. “우리가 그의 영광을 보니 아버지의 독생자의 영광이요 은혜와 진리가 충만하더라” (요한복음 1:14). 바울 사도는 젊은 디모데에게 이 개념을 구체적으로 설명했습니다. “또 네가 많은 증인 앞에서 내게 들은 바를 충성된 사람들에게 부탁하라 그들이 또 다른 사람들을 가르칠 수 있으리라”(디모데후서 2:2).

Too Good Not to Share

During court proceedings, witnesses are more than onlookers or spectators. They are active participants who help determine the outcome of a case. The same is true of our witness for Christ. We are to be active participants in a matter of absolute importance—the truth of Jesus’s death and resurrection.

When John the Baptist came to tell people about Jesus, the light of the world, he did so by declaring his knowledge of Jesus. And John the disciple, who recorded the events, testified of his experience with Jesus: “We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (JOHN 1:14). The apostle Paul would elaborate on this idea as he told young Timothy, “The things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 TIM. 2:2).

All Christians have been summoned before the courtroom of the world. The Bible says we are not mere spectators but active participants. We testify to the truth about Jesus’s death and resurrection. John the Baptist was the voice of one calling in the desert. Our voices can be heard in our workplace, neighborhood, church, and among our family and friends. We can be active witnesses, telling them about the reality of Jesus in our lives. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

기다림의 짐

지난 몇 년 동안, 우리 가족 중 두 사람이 생명이 위태롭다는 진단을 받았습니다. 내게 있어 그들이 치료를 잘 받도록 돕는 중에 가장 어려웠던 점은 계속되는 불확실성이었습니다. 나는 언제나 의사로부터 명확한 말을 듣고 싶은 마음이 간절했지만, 상황이 그렇게 확실한 경우는 거의 없었습니다. 분명한 대답을 듣는 대신 우리는 더 기다려보라는 말만 자주 들었습니다.

다음 검사가 어떤 결과를 보여줄지, 불확실한 것이 마음에 짐이 되어 견디기가 어려웠습니다. 죽음이 우리를 갈라놓기 전까지 우리에게 몇 주, 몇 달, 몇 년, 혹은 몇 십 년이 남은 걸까요? 하지만 질병이나 진단에 상관없이 우리 각자는 언젠가 죽을 것입니다. 다만 암과 같은 질병이 우리가 죽는다는 사실을 마음 깊숙히 숨어있게 하지 않고 맨 앞으로 끄집어내었을 뿐입니다.

우리가 죽는다는 사실을 분명히 되새기게 되자, 일찍이 모세가 했던 기도를 나도 하게 되었습니다. 시편 90편은 우리의 삶이 마치 시들어 말라버리는 풀과 같지만(5-6절), 하나님이 우리의 영원한 거처가 되어주신다고(1절) 말합니다. 모세처럼 우리도 지혜로운 결정을 할 수 있게 우리의 날을 세는 것을 가르쳐 달라고(12절), 그리고 우리가 하나님을 위해 하는 일들이 견고케 됨으로 우리의 짧은 인생이 열매 맺는 삶이 되게 해달라고 하나님께 간구할 수 있습니다(17절). 결국, 이 시편은 우리의 소망이 의사의 진단에 달려있는 것이 아니라, “영원부터 영원까지” 계시는 하나님께 있음을 상기시켜줍니다.

The Burden of Waiting

Over the last few years, two members of my family have faced life-threatening diagnoses. For me, the hardest part of supporting them through their treatments has been the constant uncertainty. I am always desperate for a definitive word from a doctor, but things are rarely that straightforward. Instead of being given clarity, we are often asked to wait.

It’s hard to bear the burden of uncertainty, always wondering what the next test will reveal. Will we have weeks, months, years, or decades before death separates us? But regardless of disease and diagnosis, each of us will die one day—things like cancer just bring our mortality to the forefront instead of letting it hide in the recesses of our minds.

Faced with sobering reminders of our mortality, I find myself praying words that Moses once prayed. Psalm 90 tells us that though our lives are like grass that withers and fades (VV. 5–6), we have an eternal home with God (V. 1). Like Moses, we can ask God to teach us to number our days so we can make wise decisions (V. 12), and to make our brief lives fruitful by making what we do for Him count (V. 17). Ultimately, the psalm reminds us that our hope is not in a doctor’s diagnosis, but in a God who is “from everlasting to everlasting.” - AMY PETERSON

어둠 가운데 찬양

내 친구 미키는 시력을 잃어가고 있었지만, “하나님께서 나를 위해 너무나 많은 것을 베풀어주셨기 때문에, 나는 매일 계속해서 하나님을 찬양할 겁니다.”라고 내게 말했습니다.

주님은 미키와 우리에게 끊임없이 찬양할 궁극적인 이유를 주셨습니다. 마태복음 26장은 주님께서 십자가를 지시기 전날 밤 어떻게 제자들과 유월절 음식을 나누었는지 이야기하고 있습니다. 그들이 만찬을 마무리짓는 모습을 30절은 “그들이 찬미하고 감람산으로 나아가니라”라고 기록하고 있습니다.

그날 밤 그들이 부른 노래는 여느 찬송이 아니라 찬양의 노래였습니다. 수천 년 동안 유대인들은 소위 “할렐”이라고 칭하는 여러 시편을 묶어 모은 노래를 유월절에 불렀습니다(‘할렐’은 “찬양”을 뜻하는 히브리어입니다). 시편 113-118편에서 볼 수 있는 이 찬양의 기도와 노래의 마지막 부분은 우리의 구원이 되시는 하나님을 높이며(118:21), 건축자의 버린 돌이 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 된 것과(22절) 여호와의 이름으로 오시는 분을 언급하고 있습니다(26절). 그들은 “이 날은 여호와께서 정하신 것이라 이 날에 우리가 즐거워하고 기뻐하리로다”(24절)라고 당연히 찬양했을 것입니다.

예수님은 제자들과 함께 이 유월절 밤에 찬양하실 때, 우리가 당면한 환경에서 눈을 들어 위를 바라보아야 할 궁극적인 이유를 제공해주고 계셨습니다. 주님은 우리 하나님의 끝없는 사랑과 신실하심을 찬양하는 속으로 우리를 인도하고 계셨습니다.

하나님을 찬양할 때 결코 다함이 없는 하나님의 선하심을 떠올리게 된다.

Praise in the Dark

Even though my friend Mickey was losing his eyesight, he told me, “I’m going to keep praising God every day, because He’s done so much for me.”

Jesus gave Mickey, and us, the ultimate reason for such never-ending praise. The twenty-sixth chapter of Matthew tells us about how Jesus shared the Passover meal with His disciples the night before He went to the cross. Verse 30 shows us how they concluded the meal: “When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”

It wasn’t just any hymn they sang that night—it was a hymn of praise. For millennia, Jews have sung a group of Psalms called “The Hallel” at Passover(hallel is the Hebrew word for “praise”). The last of these prayers and songs of praise, found in Psalms 113–118, honors the God who has become our salvation (118:21). It refers to a rejected stone that became a cornerstone (V. 22) and one who comes in the name of the Lord (V. 26). They may very well have sung, “The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad” (V. 24).

As Jesus sang with His disciples on this Passover night, He was giving us the ultimate reason to lift our eyes above our immediate circumstances. He was leading us in praise of the never-ending love and faithfulness of our God. - JAMES BANKS

용서해야 하나요?

교회의 행사 준비를 도우려고 교회에 일찍 도착했는데, 한 여인이 교회 본당의 맞은 편 끝에서 울며 서 있었습니다. 그녀는 과거에 내게 못되게 굴었고 나에 대해 나쁘게 말을 하고 다녔던 사람이라, 나는 재빨리 진공청소기를 돌리며 그녀의 흐느낌을 못 본 척 지나치려 했습니다. 나를 좋아하지 않는 사람을 내가 염려할 이유가 없었으니까요.

그런데 성령께서 하나님이 나를 얼마나 많이 용서해주셨는지를 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 그래서 나는 본당을 가로질러 그녀에게로 다가갔습니다. 그녀는 자기 아기가 몇 달째 병원에 입원해 있다고
내게 얘기해주었습니다. 우리는 함께 울고, 껴안고, 그녀의 딸을 위해 기도했습니다. 서로의 차이점을 극복하고 우리는 이제 친한 친구가 되었습니다.

마태복음 18장에서 예수님은 천국을 어떤 임금이 종들과 결산하려 하던 것에 비유하고 있습니다. 엄청난 빚을 지고 있던 종이 왕에게 그것을 탕감해달라고 청원했습니다. 왕이 그 종의 빚을 탕감해준지 얼마 되지 않아, 그 종은 자기가 왕에게 빚진 것보다 그에게 훨씬 적은 빚을 진 사람을 붙잡아 옥에 가두었습니다. 이 말이 왕의 귀에 들어가자, 왕은 용서해주지 않는 마음을 가진 그 악한 종을 감옥에 가두었습니다 (23-34절).

용서한다는 것은 죄를 눈감아주거나, 우리에게 잘못한 것을 봐주거나, 우리가 받은 상처를 축소하는 것이 아닙니다. 용서하게 되면 우리가 자유롭게 되어, 우리가 받을 자격이 없는 하나님의 자비의 선물을 누리게 됩니다. 우리가 하나님을 모심으로써 우리의 삶과 관계에서 평화를 회복하는 은혜의 아름다운 일을 성취할 수 있습니다.

Should I Forgive?

I arrived early at my church to help set up for an event. A woman stood crying at the opposite end of the sanctuary. She’d been cruel and gossiped about me in the past, so I quickly drowned out her sobs with a vacuum cleaner. Why should I care about someone who didn’t like me?

When the Holy Spirit reminded me how much God had forgiven me, I crossed the room. The woman shared that her baby had been in the hospital for months. We cried, embraced, and prayed for her daughter. After working through our differences, we’re now good friends.

In Matthew 18, Jesus compares the kingdom of heaven to a king who decided to settle his accounts. A servant who owed a staggering amount of money pleaded for mercy. Soon after the king canceled his debt, that servant tracked down and condemned a man who owed him far less than what he’d owed the king. When word got back to the king, the wicked servant was imprisoned because of his own unforgiving spirit (VV. 23–34).

Choosing to forgive doesn’t condone sin, excuse the wrongs done to us, or minimize our hurts. Offering forgiveness simply frees us to enjoy God’s undeserved gift of mercy, as we invite Him to accomplish beautiful works of peace-restoring grace in our lives and our relationships. - XOCHITL DIXON

기억이 하는 사역

상실과 실망의 경험들은 우리를 화나게 하거나 죄책감을 갖게 하고 혼란스럽게 만들기도 합니다. 우리의 선택 때문에 문이 닫혀 다시는 열리지 않게 되건, 우리 잘못이 아닌데도 비극이 우리의 삶을 찾아오건, 결국에는 종종 오스왈드 챔버스가 말한 “‘달리 될 수도 있었던’이라는 헤아릴 수 없는 슬픔”이 찾아옵니다. 우리는 아픈 기억을 잊으려 해보기도 하지만, 그리 할 수 없다는 것을 깨닫습니다.

챔버스는 주님께서 여전히 우리의 삶을 주관하신다는 것을 상기시켜줍니다. 그는 말합니다. “하나님께서 과거를 꺼내실때 결코 두려워하지 마십시오. 기억이 제 길을 찾아가게 놓아두십시오. 그것은 꾸짖음과 훈계와 슬픔으로 일하시는 하나님의 사역입니다. 하나님은 ‘달리 될 수도 있었던’ 것을 미래를 향한 멋진 성장의 기회로 돌려놓으실 것입니다.”

구약 시대에 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 바벨론에 포로로 보내셨을 때, 하나님은 그들에게 타국에서도 하나님을 섬기며 하나님이 그들을 고향으로 돌아오게 할 때까지 믿음 안에서 성장하라고 말씀하셨습니다. “여호와의 말씀이니라 너희를 향한 나의 생각을 내가 아나니 평안이요 재앙이 아니니라 너희에게 미래와 희망을 주는 것이니라”(예레미야 29:11).

하나님은 그들에게 과거의 일들을 무시하거나 그 일에 갇혀 지내지 말고, 하나님께 집중하며 앞을 바라보라고 권고하셨습니다. 주님의 용서는 우리의 슬픈 기억을 주님의 영원한 사랑에 대한 확신으로 바꿔줄 수 있습니다.

The Ministry of Memory

Our experiences of loss and disappointment may leave us feeling angry, guilty, and confused. Whether our choices have closed some doors that will never reopen or, through no fault of our own, tragedy has invaded our lives, the result is often what Oswald Chambers called “the unfathomable sadness of ‘the might have been.’ ” We may try to suppress the painful memory, but discover we can’t.

Chambers reminds us that the Lord is still active in our lives. “Never be afraid when God brings back the past,” he said. “Let memory have its way. It is a minister of God with its rebuke and chastisement and sorrow. God will turn the ‘might have been’ into a wonderful [place of growth] for the future.”

In Old Testament days when God sent the people of Israel into exile in Babylon, He told them to serve Him in that foreign land and grow in faith until He brought them back to their home. “ ‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’ ” (JER. 29:11).

God urged them not to ignore or be trapped by events of the past but instead to focus on Him and look ahead. The Lord’s forgiveness can transform the memory of our sorrow into confidence in His everlasting love. - DAVID MCCASLAND
