구름을 생각해보라

여러 해 전 어느 날 나는 아들들과 함께 마당에 드러누워 구름이 흘러가는 것을 보고 있었습니다. 그 때 한 아이가 “아빠, 구름은 왜 떠다녀요?”라고 물었습니다. 나는 그에게 나의 풍부한 지식을 전해주려고, “얘야, 그것은” 하며 시작했지만 말을 더 이상 잇지 못하고, “나도 잘 모르겠다.” 라고 인정하고는 “나중에 알아봐 줄게.”라고 말했습니다.

내가 알아보니 그 답은 농축된 수분이 중력에 의해 내려오다가 땅에서 올라오는 따뜻한 기운을 만나 그 수분이 수증기로 변하여 공중으로 다시 올라간다는 것이었습니다. 그것이 그 현상의 자연 과학적인 설명입니다.

그러나 자연과학적인 설명이 최종적인 답은 아닙니다. 구름이 뜨는 것은 지혜의 하나님께서 “완전한 지식의 경이로움을”(욥기 37:16) 나타내도록 자연법칙을 정하셨기 때문입니다. 그리고 구름은 창조물 안에 들어있는 하나님의 선하심과 은혜를 밖으로 드러내 보여주는 하나의 상징으로 여겨질 수도 있습니다.

언젠가 당신이 구름 속에서 어떤 형상들을 보려고 상상할 때, 만물을 아름답게 창조하신 분이 구름을 공중에 떠다니게 하신다는 사실을 기억하십시오. 주님은 우리로 감탄하고 찬미하게 하시도록 그렇게 하십니다. 뭉게구름이나 층구름, 새털구름까지, 하늘에 있는 모든 것이 하나님의 영광을 나타냅니다.

Consider the Clouds

One day many years ago my boys and I were lying on our backs in the yard watching the clouds drift by. “Dad,” one asked, “why do clouds float?” “Well, son,” I began, intending to give him the benefit of my vast knowledge, but then I lapsed into silence. “I don’t know,” I admitted, “but I’ll find out for you.”

The answer, I discovered, is that condensed moisture, descending by gravity, meets warmer temperatures rising from the land. That moisture then changes into vapor and ascends back into the air. That’s a natural explanation for the phenomenon.

But natural explanations are not final answers. Clouds float because God in His wisdom has ordered the natural laws in such a way that they reveal the “wonders of him who has perfect knowledge” (JOB 37:16). Clouds then can be thought of as a symbol—an outward and visible sign of God’s goodness and grace in creation.

So someday when you’re taking some time to see what images you can imagine in the clouds, remember this: The One who made all things beautiful makes the clouds float through the air. He does so to call us to wonder and adoration. The heavens—even the cumulus, stratus, and cirrus clouds—declare the glory of God. - DAVID ROPER

아무것도 헛되지 않음

부자유한 몸과 만성적인 통증으로 삼 년째 좌절감과 우울증에 시달리고 있던 나는 이렇게 친구에게 속마음을 털어놓았습니다. “이젠 몸도 망가지고, 하나님이나 사람들에게 아무 가치도 없는 존재가 된 것 같아.”

친구는 내 손을 잡으며 이렇게 물었습니다. “그렇다면 내가 미소로 맞아주고 귀 기울여 들어주는 것도 아무 소용없는 일이라고 말하는 거니? 너를 위해 기도해주고 따뜻하게 말해주는 것도 다 쓸데없다는 말이야?”

나는 안락의자에 자세를 고쳐 앉으며 말했습니다. “물론 그건 아니지.”

친구는 얼굴을 찌푸리며 말했습니다. “그러면 왜 말도 안 되는 그런 말을 자신에게 해? 너도 그런 일들을 다 나와 다른 사람들을 위해서 하고 있잖아.”

나는 우리가 주님을 위해서 하는 어떤 것도 헛되지 않다는 것을 깨우쳐주신 하나님께 감사했습니다.

고린도전서 15장에서, 바울은 우리의 몸이 지금은 약하나 “강한 것으로 다시 살아난다”(43절)고 우리에게 확신시켜줍니다. 하나님은 우리가 그리스도를 통해 부활할 것이라고 약속해주시기 때문에, 우리는 주님이 주님을 위해 한 모든 헌신과 작은 수고들을 사용하셔서 주 안에서 헛되지 않게 하신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다(58절).

우리의 몸이 비록 불편할지라도 그 어려움 속에서 우리가 보여주는 미소나 격려의 말, 기도, 믿음의 모습들은 아주 다양하고 서로 의지하는 그리스도의 몸된 교회를 섬기는데 사용될 수 있습니다. 주님을 섬기며 하는 어떤 일이나 어떤 사랑의 표현도 하찮은 것은 하나도 없습니다.

Nothing Is Useless

In my third year battling discouragement and depression caused by limited mobility and chronic pain, I confided to a friend, “My body’s falling apart. I feel like I have nothing of value to offer God or anyone else.”

Her hand rested on mine. “Would you say it doesn’t make a difference when I greet you with a smile or listen to you? Would you tell me it’s worthless when I pray for you or offer a kind word?”

I settled into my recliner. “Of course not.”

She frowned. “Then why are you telling yourself those lies? You do all those things for me and for others.”

I thanked God for reminding me that nothing we do for Him is useless.

In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul assures us that our bodies may be weak now but they will be “raised in power” (V 43). Because God promises we’ll be resurrected through Christ, we can trust Him to use every offering, every small effort done for Him, to make a difference in His kingdom (V 58).

Even when we’re physically limited, a smile, a word of encouragement, a prayer, or a display of faith during our trial can be used to minister to the diverse and interdependent body of Christ. When we serve the Lord, no job or act of love is too menial to matter. - XOCHITL DIXON

마음 자세

우리 남편이 교회 찬양팀의 일원으로 하모니카로 노래를 연주할때, 가끔씩 눈을 감고 연주한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그는 이렇게 눈을 감고 연주하면 더 집중할 수 있고 주위의 산만함을 차단할 수 있어서, 하모니카와 음악과 자신이 하나가 되어 하나님을 찬양하는 데 최선을 다해 연주할 수 있다고 말합니다.

어떤 사람은 기도할 때 반드시 눈을 감아야 하는지 궁금해 합니다. 그런데 우리는 언제 어디서든 기도할 수 있기 때문에 항상 눈을 감고 기도하는 것은 어렵습니다. 특히 우리가 산책하거나 잡초를 뽑을 때, 혹은 운전할 때 더욱 그렇습니다.

그리고 우리가 하나님과 대화할 때 어떤 자세를 취해야 하는지에 대한 규정도 없습니다. 솔로몬 왕은 자신이 지은 성전을 바치기 위해 기도할 때 무릎을 꿇고 “두 손을 하늘을 향하여 치켜들었습니다”(역대하 6:13-14). 성경에는 기도의 자세로 무릎을 꿇거나(에베소서 3:14), 서 있거나(누가복음 18:10-13), 심지어 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드리는(마태복음 26:39) 자세가 다 언급되어 있습니다.

하나님 앞에 무릎을 꿇든지 서있든지, 두 손을 하늘을 향해 들든지, 아니면 하나님께 더욱 집중하기 위해 눈을 감든지, 진정 중요한 것은 우리 몸의 자세가 아니라 마음의 자세입니다. 우리가 행하는 모든 것은 “우리의 마음으로부터 나옵니다”(잠언 4:23). 우리가 기도할 때 우리의 마음이 언제나 사랑하시는 하나님께 경배와 감사와 겸손으로 고개 숙일 수 있기를 바랍니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 하나님이 주의 백성들의 기도에 눈을 떠 살피시고 귀를 기울여 들어주시는 것을 알기 때문입니다(역대하 6:40).

Postures of the Heart

When my husband plays the harmonica for our church praise team, I have noticed that he sometimes closes his eyes when he plays a song. He says this helps him focus and block out distractions so he can play his best—just his harmonica, the music, and him—all praising God.

Some people wonder if our eyes must be closed when we pray. Since we can pray at any time in any place, however, it might prove difficult to always close our eyes—especially if we are taking a walk, pulling weeds, or driving a vehicle!

There are also no rules on what position our body must be in when we talk to God. When King Solomon prayed to dedicate the temple he had built, he knelt down and “spread out his hands toward heaven” (2 CHRON 6:13–14). Kneeling (EPH 3:14), standing (LUKE 18:10–13), and even lying face down (MATT 26:39) are all mentioned in the Bible as positions for prayer.

Whether we kneel or stand before God, whether we lift our hands heavenward or close our eyes so we can better focus on God—it is not the posture of our body, but of our heart that is important. Everything we do “flows from [our heart]” (PROV 4:23). When we pray, may our hearts always be bowed in adoration, gratitude, and humility to our loving God, for we know that His eyes are “open and [His] ears attentive to the prayers” of His people (2 CHRON 6:40). - CINDY HESS KASPER

왈도 찾기

왈도는 “숨은 왈도 찾기”라는, 이제는 고전이 된 인기 있는 어린이책의 주인공입니다. 왈도는 페이지마다 복잡한 그림 속에 숨어 아이들과 숨바꼭질을 하자고 합니다. 세계의 부모들은 어린 자녀들이 왈도를 찾아 기뻐하는 모습을 보는 순간을 무척 좋아합니다. 부모들도 어린 자녀들을 도와 함께 왈도를 찾는 것을 즐기기도 합니다.

초대교회의 집사였던 스데반이 그리스도를 전하다 돌에 맞아 순교한 후 (사도행전 7장 참조), 곧이어 그리스도인들에 대한 핍박이 확산되자 많은 사람들이 예루살렘을 떠나게 되었습니다. 또 다른 집사 빌립은 피난하는 그리스도인들과 함께 사마리아로 가게 되었는데, 그곳에서 그리스도를 전파하여 많은 사람들이 믿게 되었습니다(8:6). 그런데 그곳에 머무르는 동안 성령님이 특별한 사명을 위해 빌립을 “광야”로 보내셨습니다. 그가 사마리아에서 맺고 있는 전도의 열매들을 볼 때, 이 명령은 분명 이해가 되지 않았을 것입니다. 그러나 그 광야에서 에디오피아의 국고를 맡은 관리를 만나 이사야서에 나타난 예수님을 만날 수 있도록 도와주었을 때의 빌립의 기쁨을 상상해보십시오(26-40절).

다른 사람들이 성경을 통해 “예수님을 만나” 주님을 더욱 깊이 알 수 있도록 도울 수 있는 기회가 우리에게도 자주 있습니다. 새롭게 찾은 것을 기뻐하는 자녀들의 눈을 바라보는 부모나, 에디오피아인을 도와 예수님을 찾게 해준 빌립처럼, 우리에게도 주변의 사람들이 예수님을 찾는 순간을 목격할 때의 기쁨은 이루 말할 수 없을 것입니다. 매일 매일 살면서 우리가 잘 아는 사람이든 처음 본 사람이든 성령의 인도하심을 따라 그리스도를 전파할 수 있도록 우리 모두 잘 준비될수 있기를 바랍니다.

Finding Waldo

Waldo is the cartoonish star of “Where’s Waldo,” a now-classic best-selling children’s book series. Waldo hides himself in the crowded scenes on each page, inviting children to find where he’s hiding. Parents around the world love the moments of sweet discovery when their children’s faces signal they’ve found Waldo. They also enjoy the occasions when they’re invited to help find him.

Shortly after Stephen, a deacon in the early church, was stoned to death for proclaiming Christ (SEE ACTS 7), widespread persecution broke out against Christians, causing many to flee Jerusalem. Another deacon, Philip, followed these fleeing Christians into Samaria, where he proclaimed Christ and it was well received (8:6). While there, the Holy Spirit sent Philip on a special mission to “the desert road.” It must have seemed a strange request given the fruit his preaching was producing in Samaria itself. Imagine Philip’s joy, then, when he met and helped the Ethiopian court official find Jesus in the pages of Isaiah (VV 26–40).

We, too, are often given the chance to help others “find Jesus” throughout the Scriptures so they may know Him more fully. Like a parent witnessing the joy of discovery in their child’s eyes and like Philip helping the Ethiopian find Jesus, it can be exhilarating for us to witness the moment of discovery in those around us. As we go through our days, may we be prepared to share Christ as the Spirit leads us, whether they are people we know well or those we meet even just once. - RANDY KILGORE

찬양하는 이유

노래를 부르면 두뇌에 변화가 일어납니다! 연구에 의하면 노래할 때 우리 몸에서 불안과 스트레스를 해소하는 호르몬이 분비된다고 합니다. 또 다른 연구에 의하면 사람들이 함께 합창할 때 심장이 서로 박자를 맞추어 박동한다고 합니다.

바울 사도는 그의 편지에서 교회가 시와 찬송과 신령한 노래들로 서로 화답하라고 권면합니다(에베소서 5:19). 성경은 “찬양하라”는 말을 50번도 넘게 반복하고 있습니다.

역대하 20장에는 하나님의 백성들이 전쟁터로 행군할 때 찬양으로 하나님에 대한 신뢰를 보여주는 이야기가 나옵니다. 적들이 유다 백성들에게 다가오자, 이에 놀란 여호사밧 왕이 모든 사람들을 불러 모아 그들로 간절히 기도하게 했습니다. 그들은 먹지도 마시지도 않고 “우리가 어떻게 할 줄도 알지 못하옵고 오직 주만 바라보나이다”(12절) 하며 기도에만 열중하였습니다. 다음날 그들이 행진하여 나아갈 때 그들을 이끈 것은 가장 용맹한 장수들이 아니라 찬양대였습니다. 그들은 이 전쟁에서 전혀 싸우지 않고도 이길 것이라는 하나님의 약속을 믿었습니다(17절).

그들이 찬양하며 적진을 향해 행진하는 동안 적들은 자기들끼리 싸웠습니다! 하나님의 백성들이 전쟁터에 도착했을 때 전쟁은 이미 끝나 있었습니다. 하나님은 그의 백성들이 미지의 적을 향해 찬양하며 믿음으로 행군하자 그들을 구원해주셨습니다.

하나님께서는 합당한 이유로 우리의 찬양을 원하십니다. 적진을 향해 행진을 하든 아니든, 하나님을 찬양하는 것은 우리의 생각과 마음과 삶을 변화시키는 능력이 됩니다.

A Reason to Sing

Singing changes the brain! Some studies show that when we sing, our bodies release hormones that relieve anxiety and stress. Other research indicates that when a group of people sings together, their heartbeats actually synchronize with each other.

The apostle Paul’s writing encourages the church to speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (EPH 5:19). And the Bible repeats, “Sing praise” more than fifty times.

In 2 Chronicles 20, we read a story of God’s people demonstrating their trust in God by singing as they marched into battle. Enemies were heading toward the people of Judah. Alarmed, King Jehoshaphat called everyone together. He led the community in intense prayer. They didn’t eat or drink, but only prayed, “We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you” (V 12). The next day, they set out. They weren’t led by their fiercest warriors, but by their choir. They believed God’s promise that they would be delivered without having to fight at all (V 17).

While they sang and walked toward the conflict, their enemies fought each other! By the time God’s people reached the battlefield, the fighting had ended. God saved His people as they marched by faith toward the unknown, singing His praises.

God encourages us to praise Him for good reasons. Whether or not we are marching into battle, praising God has power to change our thoughts, our hearts, and our lives. - AMY PETERSON

반지와 은혜

나는 내 손을 볼 때마다 약혼반지와 결혼반지를 잃어버렸다는 사실이 떠오릅니다. 당시 나는 여행준비로 짐을 꾸리며 여러가지 일들을 한꺼번에 하느라 아직도 그 반지들을 어디에 두었는지 모릅니다.

반지를 잃어버렸다는 이야기를 하면 남편이 어찌될까 염려되어 나는 내 부주의한 실수를 말하는게 두려웠습니다. 그러나 남편은 반지를 걱정하기보다는 나를 더 안쓰러워하며 염려해주었습니다. 그런데도 가끔 나는 남편의 용서를 구하기 위해 무언가를 하려고 하지요! 하지만 나와는 달리 남편은 나의 잘못을 마음에 담아두지 않고 있습니다.

우리는 자신의 죄를 생각하며 하나님의 용서를 얻기 위해 무언가를 해야 한다고 느낄 때가 많습니다. 그러나 하나님은 행위가 아닌 은혜로 우리가 구원을 받는다고 말씀하셨습니다(에베소서 2:8-9). 하나님은 새 언약을 말씀하시며 이스라엘에게 이렇게 약속하셨습니다. “내가 그들의 악행을 사하고 다시는 그 죄를 기억하지 아니하리라”(예레미야 31:34). 하나님은 우리의 지나간 잘못을 용서하시고 더 이상 기억하지 아니하십니다.

우리의 과거 때문에 마음이 아플 때도 있겠지만, 우리는 하나님의 약속을 믿고, 또 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 하나님의 은혜와 용서를 받는 것이 사실임을 믿어야 합니다. 우리는 그것을 믿음으로 감사와 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 하나님은 한번 용서하시면 잊으십니다.

Rings and Grace

When I look at my hands, I am reminded that I lost my wedding and engagement rings. I was multi-tasking as I packed for a trip, and I still have no idea where they ended up.

I dreaded telling my husband about my careless mistake—worried how the news would affect him. But he responded with more compassion and care for me than concern over the rings. However, there are times when I still want to do something to earn his grace! He, on the contrary, doesn’t hold this episode against me.

So many times we remember our sins and feel we must do something to earn God’s forgiveness. But God has said it is by grace, not by works, that we are saved (EPH 2:8–9). Speaking of a new covenant, God promised Israel, “I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more” (JER 31:34). We have a God who forgives and no longer calls to mind the wrongs we have done.

We may still feel sad about our past, but we need to trust His promise and believe His grace and forgiveness is real through faith in Jesus Christ. This news should lead us to thankfulness and the assurance faith brings. When God forgives, He forgets. - KEILA OCHOA

우리를 부르시는 하나님

어느 날 아침 우리 딸이 자신의 11개월 된 아들에게 휴대폰을 주어 잠시 놀게 하였습니다. 1분도 채 안 되어 나의 전화기가 울려서 받아보니 그 아이의 조그만 목소리가 들렸습니다. 손자가 우연히 “단축 다이얼”로 내 전화번호를 눌러 “대화” 가 시작되었는데, 나는 오랫동안 이 대화를 기억할 것 같습니다. 손자는 아직 말을 잘 하지 못하지만 내 목소리를 알고 반응합니다. 그래서 대화를 하면서 그에게 많이 사랑한다고 말해주었습니다.

손자의 목소리를 들으며 느꼈던 나의 기쁨은 우리와 교제하기를 원하시는 하나님의 간절한 마음을 생각나게 해주었습니다. 성경은 처음부터 하나님이 우리를 적극적으로 찾고 계시는 것을 보여주고 있습니다. 아담과 하와가 하나님을 거역하여 범죄한 후 에덴동산에서 숨었을때, “여호와 하나님이 아담을 부르셨습니다” (창세기 3:9).

하나님은 예수님을 통해서 사람들을 계속 찾으셨습니다. 하나님은 우리와 관계를 맺기를 간절히 원하셔서, 예수님을 세상에 보내시어 십자가에서 죽게 하심으로 우리의 죄값을 치르게 하셨습니다. “하나님께서 그분의 사랑을 이렇게 보이셨습니다......하나님께서 자기 아들을 희생 제물로 보내주심으로, 우리 죄뿐 아니라 그 죄가 하나님과 우리의 관계에 입힌 상처까지 깨끗이 없애주신 것입니다”(요한1서 4:9-10, 메시지 성경).

하나님이 우리를 사랑하시고 예수님을 통해 보여주신 그분의 사랑에 우리가 응답하기를 원하신다는 것을 알게 되니 얼마나 좋은지요. 우리가 무슨 말을 해야 할지 전혀 모를 때에도 하나님은 우리와 대화하시기를 간절히 바라십니다!

God Calling

One morning my daughter gave her eleven-month-old son her cell phone for a moment to entertain him. Less than a minute later my phone rang, and as I picked it up I heard his little voice. He had somehow hit the “speed dial” to my number, and what followed was a “conversation” I will long remember. My grandson can only say a few words, but he knows my voice and responds to it. So I talked to him and told him how much I love him.

The joy I felt at the sound of my grandson’s voice was a reminder to me of God’s deep desire for a relationship with us. From the very beginning, the Bible shows God actively pursuing us. After Adam and Eve sinned by disobeying God and then hid from Him in the garden, “the LORD God called” to Adam (GEN 3:9).

God continued to pursue humanity through Jesus. Because God desires a relationship with us, He sent Jesus to earth to pay the penalty for our sin by His death on the cross. “This is how God showed his love . . . . He sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they’ve done to our relationship with God” (1 JOHN 4:9–10 THE MESSAGE ).

How good it is to know that God loves us and wants us to respond to His love through Jesus. Even when we don’t quite know what to say, our Father longs to hear from us! - JAMES BANKS

15분의 도전

오랫동안 하버드대학교 총장을 지냈던 찰스 엘리옷 박사는 보통 사람도 세계 명작들을 하루에 몇 분씩만이라도 꾸준히 읽는다면 훌륭한 교육을 받을 수 있다고 믿었습니다. 1910년에 그는 역사, 과학, 철학 및 미술에 관한 책들을 선별하여 50권으로 된 ‘하버드 고전 전집’을 편찬했습니다. 각 책에는 엘리옷 박사의 “하루 15분”이라는 제목의 읽기 안내가 있었는데, 거기에는 일 년 동안 매일 읽어야 할 8-10페이지의 글들이 추천되어 있었습니다.

그러면 우리가 매일 15분 동안 하나님의 말씀을 읽는다면 어떨까요? 우리는 시편 기자와 같이 이렇게 말할 수 있을 것입니다. “내 마음을 주의 증거들에게 향하게 하시고 탐욕으로 향하지 말게 하소서 내 눈을 돌이켜 허탄한 것을 보지 말게 하시고 주의 길에서 나를 살아나게 하소서”(시편 119:36-37).

하루에 15분이면 1년에 91시간입니다. 그러나 성경을 읽는데 얼마의 시간을 쓰든지 꾸준하게 읽는 것이 비결이고, 완벽하게 읽기보다는 인내하며 읽는 것이 중요합니다. 혹 하루나 한 주를 빠뜨리더라도 읽기를 다시 시작할 수 있습니다. 성령님이 가르쳐주심으로 하나님의 말씀은 우리의 머리에서 가슴으로, 그리고 다시 손과 발로 옮겨져서, 우리가 배운 것에 그치지 않고 변화될 수 있도록 인도해주십니다.

“여호와여, 주의 율례들의 도를 내게 가르치소서 내가 끝까지 지키리이다”(33절).

Fifteen-Minute Challenge

Dr. Charles W. Eliot, longtime president of Harvard University, believed that ordinary people who read consistently from the world’s great literature for even a few minutes a day could gain a valuable education. In 1910, he compiled selections from books of history, science, philosophy, and fine art into fifty volumes called The Harvard Classics. Each set of books included Dr. Eliot’s Reading Guide titled “Fifteen Minutes A Day” containing recommended selections of eight to ten pages for each day of the year.

What if we spent fifteen minutes a day reading God’s Word? We could say with the psalmist, “Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word” (PS 119:36–37).

Fifteen minutes a day adds up to ninety-one hours a year. But for whatever amount of time we decide to read the Bible each day, consistency is the secret and the key ingredient is not perfection but persistence. If we miss a day or a week, we can start reading again. As the Holy Spirit teaches us, God’s Word moves from our minds to our hearts, then to our hands and feet—taking us beyond education to transformation.

우리는 무엇을 원하는가?

얼마 전 나는 한 노인으로부터 그가 손녀에게 “나는 사람이 마차를 타던 시대로부터 달나라에 가는 시대까지 살았다.”고 이야기했다고 들었습니다. 그러고 나더니 그는 감회에 젖어 “인생이 그렇게 짧을 줄은 생각도 못했다.”고 했습니다.

인생은 짧습니다. 그래서 많은 사람이 영원한 삶을 바라며 예수님께 돌아옵니다. 그것이 나쁜 것은 아니지만, 우리는 영생의 의미가 정말 무엇인지 잘 모르고 있습니다. 우리는 그릇된 것들을 갈구하는 경향이 있으며, 좀 더 좋은 것을 갈망하면서 그것이 우리 바로 앞에 기다리고 있다고 생각합니다. ‘내가 학교만 졸업한다면, 그 직업만 가진다면, 결혼만 한다면, 은퇴만 할 수 있다면......’ 그러다가 어느 날 우리도 세월이 어디로 날아가 버렸는지 물으며 우리의 할아버지가 했던 말을 되풀이하게 됩니다.

그러나 사실 우리는 ‘지금’ 영생을 가지고 있는 것입니다. 바울 사도는 “그리스도 예수 안에 있는 생명의 성령의 법이 죄와 사망의 법에서 너를 해방하였음이라”(로마서 8:2)라고 쓰면서, “영을 따르는 자는 영의 일을 생각하나니”(5절)라고 말했습니다. 다시 말하면, 우리가 예수님께로 가면 우리의 원하는 것들이 바뀌게 되고, 그럼으로써 우리가 가장 원하는 것을 자연스럽게 얻게 된다는 것입니다. “영의 생각은 생명과 평안이니라”(6절).

우리가 진정한 삶을 살려면 먼저 다른 어딘가에 가서 다른 사람들과 무엇인가 다른 일을 해야 한다는 것은 인생의 커다란 거짓말 중의 하나입니다. 우리가 예수님 안에서 생명을 얻으면 인생의 짧음을 한탄하는 대신, 지금 그리고 영원히 예수님과 함께 하는 삶을 온전히 누리게 될 것입니다.

What Do We Want?

“I went from the horse-and-buggy to a man walking on the moon,” said the elderly man to his granddaughter, who shared this story with me recently. But then he mused, “I never thought it would be so short.”

Life is short, and many of us turn to Jesus because we want to live forever. That’s not bad, but we don’t comprehend what eternal life really is. We tend to crave the wrong things. We long for something better, and we think it’s just ahead. If only I were out of school. If only I had that job. If only I were married. If only I could retire. If only . . . And then one day we catch an echo of our grandfather’s voice as we wonder where the time has flown.

The truth is, we possess eternal life now . The apostle Paul wrote, “The law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (ROM 8:2). Then he said, “Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires” (V 5). In other words, our desires change when we come to Christ. This naturally gives us what we most desire. “The mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace” (V 6).

It’s one of life’s great lies that we need to be somewhere else, doing something else, with someone else before we start truly living. When we find our life in Jesus, we exchange regret over life’s brevity for the full enjoyment of life with Him, both now and forever. - TIM GUSTAFSON

완전한 평안

한 친구가 평안과 만족을 찾아 여러 해를 보낸 이야기를 해주었습니다. 그 친구는 남편과 함께 사업에 성공하여 큰 집도 사고, 멋진 옷과 비싼 보석들도 살 수 있었습니다. 그러나 이런 것을 다 소유해도 평안을 원하는 내면의 갈망은 채워지지 않았고, 유력한 사람들과 친분을 쌓는 것도 소용이 없었습니다. 그러던 어느 날 마음이 우울하고 절망감을 느낄때, 어떤 친구가 그녀에게 예수님의 복음을 들려주었습니다. 거기서 그녀는 평강의 왕이신 예수님을 만났고, 그녀가 갖고 있던 진정한 평안과 만족에 대한 이해가 완전히 바뀌었습니다.

예수님은 제자들과 함께 최후의 만찬을 한 후 그들에게 그런 평안에 대해 말씀하셨습니다(요한복음 14장). 거기서 예수님은 곧 일어날 일들, 곧 그의 죽음과 부활, 성령 강림의 사건들을 앞두고 제자들을 준비시키셨습니다. 예수님은 세상이 줄 수 있는 어떤 평안과도 견줄 수 없는 평안을 말씀하시면서, 제자들이 삶의 고난 가운데서도 그와 같은 평강을 찾는 법을 배우기를 원하셨습니다.

나중에 부활하신 예수님은 주님의 죽음 후에 두려움에 떨고 있는 제자들에게 나타나 “너희에게 평강이 있을지어다”(요한복음 20:19)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이제 예수님은 제자들에게, 그리고 우리들에게 주님이 우리를 위해 행하신 일 안에서 안식한다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 새롭게 깨닫게 해주셨습니다. 이 사실을 알 때 우리는 늘 변하는 감정보다 훨씬 더 깊은 확신을 얻을 수 있습니다.

Perfect Peace

A friend shared with me that for years she searched for peace and contentment. She and her husband built up a successful business, so she was able to buy a big house, fancy clothes, and expensive jewelry. But these possessions didn’t satisfy her inner longings for peace, nor did her friendships with influential people. Then one day, when she was feeling low and desperate, a friend told her about the good news of Jesus. There she found the Prince of Peace, and her understanding of true peace and contentment was forever changed.

Jesus spoke words of such peace to His friends after their last supper together (JOHN 14), when He prepared them for the events that would soon follow: His death, resurrection, and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Describing a peace—unlike anything the world can give—He wanted them to learn how to find a sense of well-being even in the midst of hardship.

Later, when the resurrected Jesus appeared to the frightened disciples after His death, He greeted them, saying, “Peace be with you!” (JOHN 20:19). Now He could give them, and us, a new understanding of resting in what He has done for us. As we do, we can find the awareness of a confidence far deeper than our ever-changing feelings. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
