자상하고 세밀하게

우주는 놀라울 만큼 광대합니다. 지금 달은 시속 약 2,300마일 (3,700킬로미터)로 우리 주위를 돌고 있고, 지구는 시속 66,000마일(106,000킬로미터)로 태양 주위를 돌고 있습니다. 태양은 우리 은하계의 2천억 개나 되는 항성들 중 하나이며, 이 은하계에는 또 수조 개의 행성들이 있고, 우리 은하계는 우주공간을 회전하고 있는 다른 1천억 은하계 중의 하나입니다. 놀랍지 않습니까!

이 방대한 우주에 비해, 우리 작은 지구는 조약돌보다도 작으며, 우리 각자의 삶은 모래알 하나만도 못합니다. 하지만 성경말씀에 의하면, 은하계들을 지으신 하나님은 아주 작은 우리 개개인을 매우 자상하고 세밀하게 돌보십니다. 하나님은 우리가 존재하기 이전부터 우리를 보셨습니다 (시편 139:13-16). 하나님은 우리가 살아가는 모습을 관심을 가지고 보시며 우리의 모든 생각을 경청하십니다(1-6절).

가끔은 이런 사실들이 믿기지 않습니다. 이 작은 “조약돌”에 전쟁이나 기근과 같은 큰 문제들이 있고, 우리가 개인적으로 고통을 당할 때 하나님의 돌보심에 대해 의문이 들기도 합니다. 그러나 다윗 왕이 시편 139편을 썼을 때, 그는 위기의 한 가운데 처해 있었습니다 (19-20절). 그리고 예수님께서 하나님이 우리의 머리털 한 올도 다 세고 계신다고 말씀하셨을 때(마태복음 10:30), 예수님은 십자가형이 존재했던 시대에 살고 계셨습니다. 하나님이 세심하게 배려하신다고 한 성경 말씀은 순진무구한 소망이 아닙니다. 그것은 현실 세계의 사실입니다.

은하계를 회전시키시는 분께서 우리를 세밀하게 알고 계십니다. 그 사실이 우리가 최악의 시간들을 이겨나갈 수 있도록 도와줍니다.

Intimate Details

The universe is astonishingly grand. Right now the moon is spinning around us at nearly 2,300 miles an hour. Our Earth is spinning around the sun at 66,000 miles an hour. Our sun is one of 200 billion other stars and trillions more planets in our galaxy, and that galaxy is just one of 100 billion others hurtling through space. Astounding!

In comparison to this vast cosmos, our little Earth is no bigger than a pebble, and our individual lives no greater than a grain of sand. Yet according to Scripture, the God of the galaxies attends to each microscopic one of us in intimate detail. He saw us before we existed (PS 139:13–16); He watches us as we go about our days and listens for our every thought (VV 1–6).

It can be hard to believe this sometimes. This tiny “pebble” has big problems like war and famine, and we can question God’s care in times of personal suffering. But when King David wrote Psalm 139 he was in the midst of crisis himself (VV 19–20). And when Jesus said God counts each hair on our heads (MATT 10:30), He was living in an age of crucifixion. Biblical talk of God’s caring attention isn’t a naïve wish. It is real-world truth.

하나님께 가까이

한 여인이 기도하기 위해 빈 의자를 붙잡고 그 앞에 무릎을 꿇었습니다. 그 여인은 눈물을 흘리며 “사랑하는 하나님 아버지, 제발 여기 앉으세요. 저는 당신과 꼭 이야기를 해야 되겠습니다!”라고 말했습니다. 그리고는 그 빈 의자를 똑바로 바라보며 기도를 드렸습니다. 그 여인은 주님께 가까이 다가간다는 확신을 실제로 증명해 보여주었습니다. 그녀는 하나님이 그 의자에 앉아계신다고 생각했고, 자신의 간청을 듣고 계신다고 믿었습니다.

우리가 전능자와 관계를 맺을 때 하나님과 같이 하는 시간은 매우 중요한 순간입니다. 하나님과 우리는 우리가 하나님께 가까이 갈 때 하나님도 우리에게 가까이 다가오시는 상호관계입니다 (야고보서 4:8). 주님은 “내가 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라”(마태복음 28:20)라는 말씀으로 우리에게 확신을 주셨습니다. 우리 하나님 아버지는 우리가 그분께로 나아오기를 항상 기다리고 계시며 언제나 우리의 기도를 듣기 위해 준비하고 계십니다.

때로는 우리가 피곤하거나, 졸리거나, 아프거나 또는 연약해서 기도하기 힘들 때도 있습니다. 그러나 예수님은 우리가 연약하거나 시험을 당할 때 우리를 불쌍히 여기십니다(히브리서 4:15). 그러므로 우리는 “긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈”(16절) 수 있습니다.

Approaching God

A woman desiring to pray grabbed an empty chair and knelt before it. In tears, she said, “My dear heavenly Father, please sit down here; you and I need to talk!” Then, looking directly at the vacant chair, she prayed. She demonstrated confidence in approaching the Lord; she imagined He was sitting on the chair and believed He was listening to her petition.

A time with God is an important moment when we engage the Almighty. God comes near to us as we draw near to Him in a mutual involvement (JAMES 4:8). He has assured us, “I am with you always” (MATT 28:20). Our heavenly Father is always waiting for us to come to Him, always ready to listen to us.

There are times when we struggle to pray because we feel tired, sleepy, sick, and weak. But Jesus sympathizes with us when we are weak or face temptations (HEB 4:15). Therefore we can “approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (V 16). - LAWRENCE DARMANI

예수님께 복종하기

사람들은 그것을 “악마의 발자국”이라고 부릅니다. 그것은 매사추세츠 주의 입스위치에 있는 교회 옆 언덕의 화강암에 새겨져 있는 발 모양의 자국입니다. 그 지역의 전설에 따르면, 이 발자국은 1740년 어느 가을날, 복음전도자 조지 휫필드가 너무나 권능이 넘치는 설교를 하자 악마가 그 마을에서 도망가기 위해 교회의 첨탑에서 바위로 뛰어내렸을 때 생긴 것이라고 합니다.

비록 전설이기는 하지만, 이 이야기는 성경말씀에서 하나님이 우리를 격려하시는 진리를 일깨워줍니다. 야고보서 4장 7절에서 “그런즉 너희는 하나님께 복종할지어다 마귀를 대적하라 그리하면 너희를 피하리라” 라고 하신 말씀을 마음에 담아두게 합니다.

하나님은 우리가 살아가면서 역경 이나 유혹에 맞서기 위해 필요한 힘을 우리에게 주셨습니다 . 성경은 예수 그리스도를 통해 우리에게 주신 하나님의 사랑의 은혜로 “죄가 너희를 주장치 못하리니”(로마서 6:14)라고 말씀합니다. 유혹이 올 때 우리가 예수님께 달려가면 주님은 우리를 주님의 능력 안에 서 있게 해주십니다. 예수님이 “세상을 이기셨기” (요한복음 16:33) 때문에 우리가 살면서 마주치는 어떤 상황도 예수님을 이길 수 없습니다.

매 순간 우리의 의지를 주님께 맡기고, 하나님의 말씀에 순종하고 동행하며 우리 자신을 구주께 드릴 때, 하나님은 우리를 도와주십니다. 우리가 유혹에 굴복하지 않고 주님께 복종한다면, 주님이 우리를 위하여 싸워주실 것입니다. 주님 안에서 우리는 승리할 수 있습니다.

Giving in to Jesus

They call it “The Devil’s Footprint.” It’s a foot-shaped impression in the granite on a hill beside a church in Ipswich, Massachusetts. According to local legend the “footprint” happened one fall day in 1740, when the evangelist George Whitefield preached so powerfully that the devil leaped from the church steeple, landing on the rock on his way out of town.

Though it’s only a legend, the story calls to mind an encouraging truth from God’s Word. James 4:7 reminds us, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

God has given us the strength we need to stand against our adversary and the temptations in our lives. The Bible tells us that “sin shall no longer be your master” (ROM 6:14) because of God’s loving grace to us through Jesus Christ. As we run to Jesus when temptation comes, He enables us to stand in His strength. Nothing we face in this life can overcome Him, because He has “overcome the world” (JOHN 16:33).

As we submit ourselves to our Savior, yielding our wills to Him in the moment and walking in obedience to God’s Word, He is helping us. When we give in to Him instead of giving in to temptation, He is able to fight our battles. In Him we can overcome. - JAMES BANKS

무사히 지나가기

2004년 6월에 캐나다 크로스컨트리 스키선수 베키 스콧은 밴쿠버의 한 미술관에서 올림픽 금메달을 수여 받았습니다. 동계 올림픽은 2002년 유타 주에서 열렸기에 그것은 매우 흥미로운 일이었습니다. 스콧은 원래 동메달을 받았는데 몇 달 뒤 앞의 두 선수가 금지약물을 복용한 것으로 판명되어 실격 처리가 되었기 때문이었습니다.

결국 그녀가 금메달을 받게 된 것은 참 다행한 일입니다. 하지만 그녀의 국가가 울려 퍼지는 시상대 위에 그녀가 서 있어야 했을 그 순간은 영원히 사라지고 말았습니다. 그 부당함은 돌이켜지지 않았습니다.

어떤 종류이든 부당함은 우리를 힘들게 합니다. 어렵게 얻은 메달을 놓치게 되는 것보다도 더 큰 오류들이 분명히 있습니다. 가인과 아벨의 이야기는 부당한 행위의 극치를 보여줍니다(창세기 4:8). 얼핏 보면 가인은 동생을 죽이고 도망간 것처럼 보이지만, 후에 그는 성을 건축했고 충분히 오래 살았습니다(17절).

그러나 하나님께서 직접 가인에게 대응하셨습니다. 하나님은 “네 아우의 핏소리가 땅에서부터 내게 호소하느니라”(10절)라고말씀하셨습니다. 나중에 신약성경은 가인을 닮지 말아야 할 본보기로
기록하고 있습니다(요한1서 3:12; 유다서 1:11). 하지만 아벨에 대해서는 “그가 죽었으나 그 믿음으로써 지금도 말하느니라”(히브리서 11:4)라고 기록하고 있습니다.

하나님은 정의로움과, 잘못을 바로잡는 일과, 힘없는 자들을 지키는 일을 아주 중요하게 여기십니다. 결국에는 어느 누구든 부당한 행동을 한 사람은 무사하지 못합니다. 또한 하나님을 위해 믿음으로 행한 일들을 하나님은 아무런 보상 없이 내버려두지도 않으십니다.

Getting Away with It

In June 2004, at a Vancouver art gallery, Canadian crosscountry skier Beckie Scott received an Olympic gold medal. That’s interesting, because the Winter Olympics had been held in 2002—in Utah. Scott had won bronze behind two athletes who were disqualified months later when it was learned they had used banned substances.

It’s good that Scott eventually received her gold, but gone forever is the moment when she should have stood on the podium to hear her country’s national anthem. That injustice couldn’t be remedied.

Injustice of any kind disturbs us, and surely there are far greater wrongs than being denied a hard-won medal. The story of Cain and Abel shows an ultimate act of injustice (GEN 4:8). And at first glance, it might look like Cain got away with murdering his brother. After all, he lived a long, full life, eventually building a city (V 17).

But God Himself confronted Cain. “Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground,” He said (V 10). The New Testament later recorded Cain as an example to avoid (1 JOHN 3:12; JUDE 1:11). But of Abel we read, “By faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead” (HEB 11:4).

God cares deeply about justice, about righting wrongs, and about defending the powerless. In the end, no one gets away with any act of injustice. Nor does God leave unrewarded our work done in faith for Him. - TIM GUSTAFSON

기쁜 마음

우리 손녀는 존 필립 소사의 행진곡 중의 한 곡을 아주 좋아합니다. “행진곡의 왕”으로 알려진 소사는 19세기 말에 활동했던 미국 작곡가입니다. 손녀 모리아는 밴드부원이 아닌, 이제 겨우 20개월 된 아기일 뿐입니다. 그런데도 그 곡을 너무 좋아해서 몇 소절을 따라 할 수도 있습니다. 그 아이에게는 그 곡 자체가 즐거운 시간입니다. 가족들이 함께 모여서 손뼉 치고 떠들썩하게 그 노래를 함께 흥얼거리면, 아이들은 박자에 맞추어 춤을 추거나 동그랗게 행진을 합니다. 그러다가 결국 아이들이 어지러워하면서 웃음바다가 됩니다.

우리가 즐거이 소리 내어 노래할 때면 나는 “기쁨으로 여호와를 섬기라” (시편 100:2)고 우리에게 간청하는 시편 말씀이 떠오릅니다. 솔로몬 왕이 성전을 봉헌할 때 이스라엘 백성들은 찬양으로 송축했습니다(역대하 7:5-6). 시편 100편은 아마 그들이 찬양했던 노래 중의 하나일지도 모릅니다. 그 시편은 이와 같이 선포합니다. “온 땅이여 여호와께 즐거운 찬송을 부를지어다 기쁨으로 여호와를 섬기며 노래하면서 그의 앞에 나아갈지어다...... 감사함으로 그의 문에 들어가며 찬송하며 그의 궁정에 들어가서 그에게 감사하며 그의 이름을 송축할지어다”(1-2,4절). 왜 그렇습니까? 그것은 “여호와는 선하시니 그의 인자하심이 영원”(5절)하기 때문입니다.

좋으신 하나님이 우리를 사랑하십니다! 감사함으로 우리 모두 “주님께 즐거운 찬송을 부릅시다!”(시편 100:1).

A Joyful Heart

My granddaughter’s favorite tune is one of John Philip Sousa’s marches. Sousa, known as “The March King,” was a US composer in the late nineteenth century. Moriah isn’t in a marching band; she’s only twenty months old. She just loves the tune and can even hum a few notes. She associates it with joyful times. When our family gets together, we often hum this song along with claps and other boisterous noises, and the grandchildren dance or parade in circles to the beat. It always ends in dizzy children and lots of laughter.

Our joyful noise reminds me of the psalm that implores us to “worship the LORD with gladness” (PS 100:2). When King Solomon dedicated the temple, the Israelites celebrated with praises (2 CHRON 7:5–6). Psalm 100 may have been one of the songs they sang. The psalm declares: “Shout for joy to the LORD , all the earth; worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. . . . Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name” (VV 1, 4). Why? “For the LORD is good and his love endures forever”! (V 5).

Our good God loves us! In grateful response, let’s “shout for joy to the LORD ”! (PS 100:1). - ALYSON KIEDA

안식일

어느 주일에, 나는 시냇물이 없었다면 건물만 꽉 들어차 있을 북 런던 지역을 따라 소리를 내며 천천히 흐르는 시냇물 옆에 서서 그 아름다움을 만끽하고 있었습니다. 줄기차게 흐르는 물줄기를 보고 지저귀는 새 소리를 들으며 나는 편안해지는 것을 느꼈습니다. 나는 잠시 멈추어 영혼의 안식을 찾게 해주신 주님께 감사드렸습니다.

하나님은 고대 근동 지방에 있는 그의 백성들이 번창하도록 쉼과 회복의 시간인 안식일을 제정하셨습니다. 출애굽기에서 보는 것처럼 하나님은 그들에게 여섯 해 동안 밭에 씨를 뿌리고 일곱 번째 해에는 쉬라고 말씀하십니다. 마찬가지로 엿새 동안 일을 하고 일곱 번째 날에는 쉬게 하셨습니다. 그분의 삶의 방식은 이스라엘 백성을 다른 민족들과 따로 떼어 구별하셨는데, 그들 뿐 아니라 그들에게 속한 이방인이나 노예들도 이 방식을 따르도록 하셨습니다.

우리는 예배할 기회와 우리의 기호에 따라 다양하게 우리의 영혼을 먹일 어떤 일을 할 기회를 갖게 되는 것을 환영하면서, 기대감과 창의성을 가지고 안식일을 기다릴 수 있습니다. 어떤 이들은 게임을 하고, 어떤 이들은 정원을 가꾸고, 어떤 이들은 친구나 가족과 식사를 하고, 또 어떤 이들은 오후의 낮잠을 즐길 것입니다.

우리의 삶 가운데 안식일이 없다면, 안식일을 따로 구별함으로 갖게 되는 이 아름다움과 풍성함을 어떻게 다시 발견할 수 있을까요?

A Day to Rest

One Sunday, I stood by the gurgling stream that wends its way through our North London community, delighting in the beauty it brings to our otherwise built-up area. I felt myself relax as I watched the cascading water and listened to the birds chirping. I paused to give the Lord thanks for how He helps us to find rest for our souls.

The Lord instituted a time of Sabbath—a time for rest and renewal—for His people in the ancient Near East because He wanted them to thrive. As we see in the book of Exodus, He tells them
to sow their fields for six years and rest on the seventh. So too with working six days and resting on the seventh. His way of life set apart the Israelites from other nations, for not only they but also the foreigners and slaves in their households were allowed to follow this pattern.

We can approach our day of rest with expectancy and creativity, welcoming the chance to worship and do something that feeds our souls, which will vary according to our preferences. Some will like to play games; some to garden; some to share a meal with friends and family; some to take an afternoon nap.

How can we rediscover the beauty and richness of setting apart a day to rest, if that’s missing from our lives? - AMY BOUCHER PYE

내가 자메이카에서 자랄 때 부모님은 나와 언니가 “좋은 사람” 이 되도록 우리를 기르셨습니다. 우리 가족에게 ‘좋은’이라는 말의 의미는 부모님 말씀을 잘 따르고, 거짓말하지 않고, 학교와 직장에서 성공적이며, 적어도 부활절과 성탄절에는 교회에 가야한다는 것입니다. 이와 같은 좋은 사람의 정의는 문화에 관계없이 많은 이들에게 비슷하리라고 생각합니다. 실제로 바울 사도는 빌립보서
3장에서 좋은 사람이 되는 것에 대한 의미를 크게 부각시키려고 그의 문화권의 정의를 사용했습니다.

바울은 신실한 1세기의 유대인으로서 그 시대 문화의 도덕법을 문자 그대로 엄밀하게 지켰습니다. 그는 “바른” 가정에 태어나서, “바른” 교육을 받았고, “바른” 종교 활동을 했습니다. 그는 유대인의 관습에 따르면 좋은 사람이라는 면에서 ‘실질적인 본보기’였습니다. 4절에서 바울은 그가 마음만 먹으면 자신의 모든 바른 것을 자랑할 수 있다고도 했습니다. 바울은 이처럼 좋은 사람이었지만, 자신의 서신을 읽는 이들(그리고 우리들)에게 선하게 되는 것 그 이상의 무언가가 있다고 말합니다. 그는 선하게 되는 것이 물론 좋지만, 그것이 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 것과 같은 것이 아니라는 것을 알았습니다.

우리의 소망과 믿음이 우리의 선함에 있지 않고 오직 그리스도 그분께만 있을 때, 비로소 우리는 선하며 또 하나님을 기쁘시게 한다.

The Ultimate Good

As I was growing up in Jamaica, my parents raised my sister and me to be “good people.” In our home, good meant obeying our parents, telling the truth, being successful in school and work, and going to church . . . at least Easter and Christmas. I imagine this definition of being a good person is familiar to many people, regardless of culture. In fact, the apostle Paul, in Philippians 3, used his culture’s definition of being good to make a greater point.

Paul, being a devout first-century Jew, followed the letter of the moral law in his culture. He was born into the “right” family, had the “right” education, and practiced the “right” religion. He was the real deal in terms of being a good person according to Jewish custom. In verse 4, Paul writes that he could boast in all of his goodness if he wanted to. But, as good as he was, Paul told his readers (and us) that there is something more than being good. He knew that being good, while good , was not the same as pleasing God.

Pleasing God, Paul writes in verses 7–8, involves knowing Jesus. Paul considered his own goodness as “garbage” when compared to “the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus.” We are good—and we please God—when our hope and faith are in Christ alone, not in our goodness. - KAREN WOLFE

먼저 다가가기

우리는 우리 아들이 치유되어 우리 가족과 함께하는 새 삶에 적응할 수 있도록 인내하며 노력했습니다. 고아원에서 어린 시절에 겪은 마음의 상처로 그는 몇 가지 부적절한 행동을 했습니다. 나는 아들이 어릴 적에 겪었던 힘든 일들이 대단히 안타까웠지만, 그의 부적절한 행동들 때문에 감정적으로 움츠러들기 시작하는 것을 느꼈습니다. 나는 부끄러워하면서 마음의 갈등을 아들의 치료사에게 털어놓았습니다. 그 치료사의 친절한 답변이 내 마음에 와 닿았습니다. “그가 사랑을 표현하는 행동을 할 수 있기 이전에 먼저 자신이 사랑받을 자격이 있다는 것을 알게 해주기 위해서 선생님이 아들에게 먼저 다가가는 것이 필요해요.”

요한은 우리가 서로 사랑해야 할 근원 이자 이유가 바로 하나님의 사랑이라고 이야기하면서, 그의 서신을 받는 이들이 한없는 사랑의 깊이에 이르도록 독려합니다(요한1서 4:7,11). 사실 나도 다른 사람들에게, 즉 낯선 사람이나 친구, 혹은 내 자녀들에게도 그런 사랑을 보여주지 못할 때가 종종 있음을 고백합니다. 하지만 ‘하나님께서 먼저 다가오셨다’는 요한의 말은 그렇게 하고자 하는 새로운 의지와 능력이 내 마음에서 불꽃을 일으킵니다. 하나님은 모든 사람을 향한 충만한 하나님의 사랑을 보여주시기 위해 그분의 아들을 보내주셨습니다. 하나님의 마음을 우리 안에서 없애버리려고 하는
우리와 달리 하나님은 그렇게 하지 않으심이 얼마나 감사한지 모릅니다.

우리의 죄악 때문에 하나님의 사랑을 받을 자격이 없지만, 그래도 하나님은 우리에게 사랑을 베푸시기를 포기하지 않으십니다(로마서 5:8). “먼저 다가오신” 하나님의 사랑은, 우리가 그 사랑에 반응하고 또 그 사랑을 반영해 보여주도록 서로를 사랑하게 만들어줍니다.

Going First

We worked patiently to help our son heal and adjust to his new life with our family. Trauma from his early days in an orphanage was fueling some negative behaviors. While I had enormous compassion for the hardships he experienced in his early days, I felt myself begin to withdraw from him emotionally because of those behaviors. Ashamed, I shared my struggle with his therapist. Her gentle reply hit home: “He needs you to go first . . . to show him he’s worthy of love before he’ll be able to act like it.”

John pushes the recipients of his letter to an incredible depth of love, citing God’s love as both the source and the reason for loving one another (1 JOHN 4:7, 11). I admit I often fail to show such love to others, whether strangers, friends, or my own children. Yet John’s words spark in me renewed desire and ability to do so: G od went first . He sent His Son to demonstrate the fullness of His love for each of us. I’m so thankful He doesn’t respond as we all are prone to do by withdrawing His heart from us.

Though our sinful actions don’t invite God’s love, He is unwavering in offering it to us (ROM 5:8). His “go-first” love compels us to love one another in response to, and as a reflection of, that love. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

나도 그렇게 말할 수 있을까?

발달장애 소아전문의 바바라 하워드 박사는 “부모가 편애한다고 느끼는 것이 자녀간의 경쟁을 일으키는 가장 큰 요인 중의 하나이다.”라고 말했습니다(“부모가 자녀를 편애할 때”, nytimes.com).
그 예가 바로 아버지의 총애를 받아 그것 때문에 형들을 분노케 했던 구약성경의 요셉입니다(창세기 37:3-4). 그래서 요셉의 형들은 요셉을 애굽으로 가는 상인들에게 팔아넘기고, 마치 들짐승이 그를 죽인 것처럼 일을 꾸몄습니다(37:12-36). 요셉의 꿈은 산산조각이 났으며 그의 미래는 절망적으로 보였습니다.

하지만 요셉은 살아가면서 줄곧 하나님께 신실하기로 마음을 정하고, 상황이 더 나빠지는 것처럼 보여도 여전히 하나님을 의지하기로 결심했습니다. 그의 주인의 아내가 그를 거짓 모함하여 그가 하지도 않은 일로 감옥에 갇혔을 때, 요셉은 부당하게 전개되는 상황 때문에 힘들었지만 여전히 하나님을 신뢰했습니다.

여러 해가 지난 후 극심한 기근으로 요셉의 형제들이 곡식을 사려고 애굽에 와서, 자신들이 미워하던 동생이 지금 애굽의 총리가 된 것을 보고는 겁에 질렸습니다. 하지만 요셉은 형제들에게 “당신들이 나를 이곳에 팔았다고 해서 근심하지 마소서 한탄하지 마소서 하나님이 생명을 구원하시려고 나를 당신들보다 먼저 보내셨나이다...... 나를 이리로 보낸 이는 당신들이 아니요 하나님이시라”(45:5,8)라고 말했습니다.

요셉의 따뜻한 말을 생각하며 나라면 되갚아 주려하지 않았을까 하는 의구심이 들었습니다. 아니면 내 마음이 주님 안에서 확신을 가지고 있어서 나도 그들에게 너그러울 수 있었을까요?

Could I Say That?

“The perception of favoritism is one of the biggest factors in sibling rivalry,” said Dr. Barbara Howard, a developmental behavioral pediatrician (“When Parents Have a Favorite Child” nytimes.com). An example would be the Old Testament character Joseph, who was his father’s favorite son, which made his older brothers furious (GEN 37:3–4). So they sold Joseph to merchants traveling to Egypt and made it appear that a wild animal had killed him (37:12–36). His dreams had been shattered and his future appeared hopeless.

Yet, along Joseph’s journey of life, he chose to be true to his God and rely on Him even when it seemed to make his situation worse. After being falsely accused by his employer’s wife and imprisoned for something he didn’t do, Joseph struggled with the injustice of his situation but kept trusting the Lord.

Years later his brothers came to Egypt to buy grain during a famine and were terrified to discover that their despised younger brother was now the Prime Minister. But Joseph told them, “Do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you . . . . It was not you who sent me here, but God” (45:5, 8).

Joseph’s kind words cause me to wonder if I would be ready for revenge. Or would I be gracious because my heart had confidence in the Lord? - DAVID MCCASLAND

자유를 축하하라

납치되어 13일 동안 인질로 잡혀 있다가 풀려난 뉴질랜드의 사진기자 올라프 위그는 얼굴가득 미소를 머금고 “내 생애에 지금처럼 확실하게 살아있음을 느껴본 적이 없습니다.”라고 말했습니다.

그 이유가 뭔지는 모르겠지만, 자유롭게 되는 것이 현재 자유로운 것보다 더 활기를 줍니다.

올라프가 표현한 그 기쁨은 일상의 삶 속에서 자유를 누리는 사람들에게, 우리가 얼마나 큰 축복 속에 지내고 있는지를 너무 쉽게 잊고 산다는 것을 상기시켜주는 훌륭한 역할을 했습니다. 이것은 영적인 면에서도 마찬가지입니다. 오랫동안 신앙생활을 해온 그리스도인들은 죄에 사로잡혀 있는 상태가 어떤 것인지를 종종 잊어버립니다. 우리는 자기만족에 빠지게 되고, 심지어는 감사하지도 않게 됩니다. 그러나 그럴 때 하나님은 우리에게 새 믿음의 식구를 보내셔서 그 사람의 삶 속에 하나님께서 어떻게 역사하셨는가를 넘치도록 간증하게 하십니다. 그러면 우리는 우리가 “죄와 사망의 법에서 해방”(로마서 8:2)될 때의 기쁨을 우리의 것으로 다시 맛보게 됩니다.

당신이 자유로운 것에 무료해지거나, 당신이 할 수 없는 일에 관심이 쏠리게 된다면, 당신이 이제 더 이상 죄의 노예가 아닐 뿐 아니라, 거룩해지기 위해 그리고 예수 그리스도와 함께 영생을 누리기 위해 자유롭게 되었다는 사실을 생각하십시오!(6:22).

Celebrate Freedom

After being kidnapped, held hostage for thirteen days, and released, New Zealand news cameraman Olaf Wiig, with a broad smile on his face, announced, “I feel more alive now than I have in my entire life.”

For reasons difficult to understand, being freed is more exhilarating than being free.

For those who enjoy freedom every day, Olaf’s joy was a good reminder of how easily we forget how blessed we are. This is also true spiritually. Those of us who have been Christians for a long time often forget what it’s like to be held hostage by sin. We can become complacent and even ungrateful. But then God sends a reminder in the form of a new believer who gives an exuberant testimony of what God has done in his or her life, and once again we see the joy that is ours when we are “free from the law of sin and death” (ROM 8:2).

If freedom has become boring to you, or if you tend to focus on what you can’t do, consider this: Not only are you no longer a slave to sin, but you are freed to be holy and to enjoy eternal life with Christ Jesus! (6:22).
