불안의 치료

남편의 직장 때문에 이사를 하게 되어 우리는 신이 났습니다. 그러나 모르는 것들과 쉽지 않은 일들도 많을 거라는 생각에 걱정도 되었습니다. 짐을 정리해서 싸야 하고, 살 집을
찾아야 하며, 내 직장도 새로 구해야 되고, 새로운 도시에 익숙해서 정착해야 하는 것 등을 생각하니 모든 것이 다 불안했습니다. 그러다가 “해야 할 일”의 목록들을 생각하던 중, ‘아무것도 염려하지 말고 다만 기도하라’ (빌립보서 4:6-7)고 한 바울 사도의 말이 마음에 떠올랐습니다.

알 수 없는 일들과 어려운 도전 앞에서 불안해했을 사람이 있다면 아마도 바울이 바로 그 사람일 것입니다. 그는 난파당하고, 매를 맞고, 감옥에 갇히기도 했습니다. 하지만 그는 빌립보교회에 보낸 편지에서 자기처럼 알 수 없는 일들을 눈앞에 두고 있는 동료들에게 이렇게 격려했습니다. “아무것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라”(6절).

바울의 말은 나에게 용기를 줍니다. 인생에는 불확실한 것들이 늘 있습니다. 그것들은 삶의 큰 전환점의 형태로 오기도 하고, 가정이나 건강, 혹은 재정적인 문제의 모습으로 찾아오기도 합니다. 하지만 내가 계속해서 깨닫는 것은 하나님이 돌보고 계신다는 것입니다. 하나님은 불확실한 것에 대한 두려움을 그분께 다 드리고 떨쳐버리라고 하십니다. 그러면 모든 것을 아시는 하나님께서 “모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라”(7절)고 약속해주십니다.

사랑하는 하나님, 우리가 아무것도 염려할 필요가 없다는 것이 얼마나 큰 축복인지요! 우리가 하나님 앞에 나아가 모든 것을 말할 수 있다는 것을 기억하게 해주소서. 하나님의 하나님 되심과 우리의 삶속에서 행하시는 모든 일들로 인해 감사드립니다.

하나님께서 돌보시니 마음의 평안이 있다.

The Cure for Anxiety

We were excited about moving for my husband’s job. But the unknowns and challenges left me feeling anxious. Thoughts of sorting and packing up belongings. Looking for a place to live. My finding a new job too. Making my way around a new city, and getting settled. It was all . . . unsettling. As I thought about my “to-do” list, words written by the apostle Paul echoed in my mind: Don’t worry, but pray (PHIL 4:6–7).

If anyone could have been anxious about unknowns and challenges, it would have been Paul. He was shipwrecked. He was beaten. He was jailed. In his letter to the Philippian church, he encouraged his friends who also were facing unknowns, telling them, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (V 6).

Paul’s words encourage me. Life is not without uncertainties—whether they come in the form of a major life transition, family issues, health scares, or financial trouble. What I continue to learn is that God cares. He invites us to let go of our fears of the unknown by giving them to Him. When we do, He, who knows all things, promises that His peace, “which transcends all understanding, will guard” our heart and mind in Christ Jesus (V 7). - KAREN WOLFE

모든 것이 선물입니다!

런던에 있는 랑데부 카페에는 아름다운 조명과 편안한 의자, 은은한 커피향이 있습니다. 그런데 그곳에는 가격표가 없습니다. 이 카페는 원래 지역 교회에서 사업으로 시작했던 것인데, 일 년 후에 바뀌었습니다. 모든 메뉴를 무료로 제공하는 완전히 새로운 방식을 하나님께서 원하신다고 카페의 매니저들이 느낀 것입니다. 오늘도 거기에 가면 누구나 커피나 케이크, 혹은 샌드위치를 돈 없이도 주문할 수 있습니다. 기부금을 넣는 항아리도 없습니다. 모든 것이 다 선물입니다.

이렇게 베푸는 이유가 뭐냐고 매니저에게 물었더니 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리는 단지 하나님께서 우리를 대하시는 방식대로 사람들을 대하려고 할 뿐입니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분께 고마움을 표시하든 안하든 우리에게 주십니다. 하나님은 상상할
수 없을 정도로 우리에게 관대한 분이시기 때문입니다.”

예수님은 우리를 죄에서 구원하시고 하나님과 화목시키기 위해 돌아가셨습니다. 주님은 무덤에서 부활하셔서 지금도 살아계십니다. 이것 때문에 우리가 이미 저지른 모든 잘못들을 용서받을 수 있고 오늘 새 생명을 가질 수 있습니다(에베소서 2:1-5). 그리고 무엇보다 가장 놀라운 사실 중의 하나는 이것이 모두 선물이라는 것입니다. 우리는 예수님이 주시는 새 생명을 돈으로 살 수 없습니다. 우리는 엄청난 그 가격에 기부조차도 할 수 없습니다(8-9절). 그 모든 것이 다 선물입니다.

랑데부 카페에서 케이크와 커피를 대접 받는 사람들은 하나님의 너그러움을 잠시 체험하게 됩니다. 예수님이 값을 이미 치르셨기 때문에 당신과 나도 영생을 선물로 받았습니다.

It’s All a Gift!

London’s Café Rendezvous has nice lighting, comfortable couches, and the smell of coffee in the air. What it doesn’t have are prices. Originally started as a business by a local church, the café was transformed a year after it started. The managers felt that God was calling them to do something radical—make everything on the menu free. Today you can order a coffee, cake, or sandwich without cost. There isn’t even a donation jar. It’s all a gift.

I asked the manager why they were so generous. “We’re just trying to treat people the way God treats us,” he said. “God gives to us whether we thank him or not. He’s generous to us beyond our imaginations.”

Jesus died to rescue us from our sins and reconcile us with God. He rose from the grave and is alive now. Because of this, every wrong thing we’ve done can be forgiven, and we can have new life today (EPH 2:1–5). And one of the most amazing things about this is that it is all free. We can’t buy the new life Jesus offers. We can’t even donate toward the cost (VV 8–9). It’s all a gift.

As the folks at Café Rendezvous serve their cakes and coffees, they give people a glimpse of God’s generosity. You and I are offered eternal life for free because Jesus has paid the bill. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY

실패를 회복시키심

우리 교회에서 초대한 찬양팀이 찬양과 경배의 시간을 인도하고 있었습니다. 하나님을 향한 그들의 열정은 감동적이었습니다. 우리는 그들의 열정을 보고 또 느낄 수 있었습니다.

순서가 끝나자 그들은 모두가 전에 죄로 복역했던 사람들이라고 밝혔습니다. 이 말에 그들의 찬양에 갑자기 특별한 의미가 더해져 , 그들의 찬양이 왜 그렇게 절실했는지를 알게 되었습니다. 그들의 경배는 깨어졌다 회복된 삶의 간증이었습니다.

세상은 성공을 좋아합니다. 그러나 과거에 실패했던 이야기도 사람들에게 희망을 줍니다. 그 이야기들은 우리가 얼마나 많이 실패했는지에 상관없이 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신다는 것을 확신시켜 줍니다. 게리 인릭 목사는 믿음의 장이라 불리는 히브리서 11장은 하나님께서 회복시키신 실패자들의 장이라 불릴 수도 있다고 말했습니다. 그는 설명합니다. “11장에 나오는 사람들 중 삶에 심각한 결함이 없는 사람은 거의 없습니다. 그러나 하나님은 실패한 사람을 다시 일으켜 세우는 일을 하고 계십니다...... 그것은 하나님의 은혜의 위대한 원칙입니다.”

나는 시편 145편의 위로의 말씀을 좋아합니다. 거기에는 하나님께서 하신 “놀라운 일들”(5-6절)과 영광스러운 왕국(11절)에 대해서 말하고 있습니다. 그 시편은 하나님의 긍휼하심(8-9절)과 신실하심(13절)을 말하면서, 이어서 하나님이 실패한 자들을 일으켜 세우신다고(14절) 말합니다. 주님이 우리를 일으키실 때 주님의 모든 성품이 나타납니다. 주님은 진실로 회복의 사역을 하고 계십니다.

전에 실패한 적이 있으십니까? 우리 모두 다 그런 경험이 있습니다. 다시 회복되셨습니까? 회복된 사람 모두 다 하나님 은혜를 간증할 수 있는 사람들입니다.

Restored Failures

A guest band was leading praise and worship at our church, and their passion for the Lord was moving. We could see—and feel—their enthusiasm.

Then the musicians revealed that they were all ex-prisoners. Suddenly their songs took on special meaning, and I saw why their words of praise meant so much to them. Their worship was a testimony of lives broken and restored.

The world may embrace success. But stories of past failure offer people hope too. They assure us that God loves us no matter how many times we have failed. Pastor Gary Inrig says that what we call the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11 could well be entitled God’s Hall of Reclaimed Failures. “There is scarcely an individual in that chapter without a serious blemish in his or her life,” he observes. “But God is in the business of restoring failures . . . . That is a great principle of God’s grace.”

I love the comfort of Psalm 145, which speaks of God’s “wonderful works” (VV 5–6) and glorious kingdom (V 11). It describes His compassion (VV 8–9) and faithfulness (V 13)—then immediately tells us that He lifts up those who have fallen (V 14). All His attributes are expressed when He picks us up. He is indeed in the business of restoration.

밖에서 안으로?

“변화: 안에서 밖으로인가, 아니면 밖에서 안으로인가?”라는 기사 제목은 오늘날 유행하는 한 가지 추세를 보여주고 있습니다. 그것은 화장을 하거나 몸가짐을 좋게 하는 등, 외적인 변화를 주면 우리 내면의 기분 뿐 아니라 우리 삶까지도 쉽게 바꿀 수 있다는 생각입니다.

이 생 각은 아주 매력적입니다 . 우리의 삶을 외모 바꾸듯 쉽게 바꿀 수만 있다면 나아지기를 원하지 않는 사람이 누가 있을까요? 우리 중 많은 사람들은 깊이 뿌리박힌 습관을 바꾸는 것이 거의 불가능하다는 것을 경험을 통해 힘겹게 깨닫습니다. 그래서 단순히 외적인 변화만 줌으로써 쉽게 더 나은 인생을 살 수 있다는 희망을 갖기도 합니다.

그런 변화가 우리 삶에 도움이 될 수도 있겠지만, 성경은 우리의 힘으로는 도저히 불가능한 더 깊은 변화를 추구하라고 권면합니다. 갈라디아서 3장에서 바울은 하나님의 뜻이 담긴 최고의 선물인 하나님의 율법조차도 그의 백성들의 죄를 해결할 수 없다고 강조합니다(19-22절). 진정한 죄 사함과 자유를 위해 하나님의 백성들은 믿음으로 성령을 통해(5:5) 그리스도로 “옷 입어야”(27절) 한다는 것입니다. 이렇게 구별되어 주님에 의해 변화된 사람들은 모든 신자가 똑같이 하나님의 모든 약속의 상속자라는, 자신의 새로운 신분과 가치를 발견하게 됩니다(3:28-29).

우리는 자신을 더 낫게 보이는 방법들에 많은 공을 들이기 쉽습니다. 그러나 우리 마음 속 가장 깊은 곳의 가장 만족스런 변화는 지식에 넘치는 사랑(에베소서 3:17-19), 곧 모든 것을 변화시키는 사랑을 깨닫는 데서 옵니다.

Outside In?

“Change: From the Inside Out or the Outside In?” the headline read, reflecting a popular trend today—the idea that outward changes like a makeover or better posture can be an easy way to change how we feel on the inside—and even change our lives.

It’s an appealing concept—who wouldn’t want improving our lives to be as easy as a new look? Many of us have learned the hard way that changing deep-rooted habits can seem nearly impossible. Focusing on simple external changes offers hope that there is a quicker path toward improving our lives.

But although such changes can improve our lives, Scripture invites us to seek a deeper transformation—one that is impossible on our own. In fact, in Galatians 3 Paul argued that even God’s law—a priceless gift that revealed His will—couldn’t heal the brokenness of God’s people (VV 19–22). True healing and freedom required them to, through faith, be “clothed” in Christ (V 27) through His Spirit (5:5). Set apart and shaped through Him, they would find their true identity and worth—every believer equally an heir to all of God’s promises (3:28–29).

We could easily devote much energy to self-improvement techniques. But the deepest and most satisfying changes in our hearts come in knowing the love that surpasses knowledge (EPH 3:17–19)—the love that changes everything. - MONICA BRANDS

예상치 못한 은혜

고등학교 2학년의 어느 토요일 이른 아침, 나는 그 날도 일하던 볼링장으로 서둘러 나갔습니다. 그 전날 저녁에 청소부가 병가를 내는 바람에 그를 대신해 진흙이 잔뜩 묻은 바닥을 닦느라 늦게까지 일을 했었습니다. 나는 청소부를 놀라게 해주려고 이 사실을 굳이 주인에게 이야기하지 않았습니다. ‘설마 무슨 일이 있을까?’라고 생각했던 것입니다.

그런데 엄청난 일이 벌어졌습니다.

문에 들어서자 건물 안이 물바다가 되어 있고 볼링 핀들과 화장지들, 그리고 게임 기록카드 용지가 들어있는 상자들이 물에 둥둥 떠다니는 것이었습니다. 그러자 곧 내가 무슨 일을 저질렀는지 깨달았습니다. ‘어제 밤에 마루를 청소하면서 큰 수도꼭지를 밤새 틀어놓았구나!’ 그런데 뜻밖에도 주인은 큰 미소와 함께 나를 꼭 안아주었습니다. 그리곤 “네 노력에 대한 상이야.”라고 말했습니다.

사울은 그리스도인들을 심하게 박해하고 핍박하다가(사도행전 9:1-2) 다메섹으로 가던 길에 예수님을 만나게 되었습니다(3-4절). 예수님은 잘못된 일을 하고 있는, 훗날 바울 사도라고 불리게 될 그와 직접 대면하셨습니다. 그 사건으로 앞을 못 보게 된 사울, 곧 바울은 시력을 회복하기 위해 아나니아라는 그리스도인의 용기 있고 은혜로운 행동이 필요했습니다(17절).

사울도 나도 ‘뜻밖의’ 은혜를 입은 사람입니다.

대부분의 사람들은 자신이 잘못 되어 있다는 것을 압니다. 하지만 그들에게 필요한 것은 잔소리가 아니라 용서에 대한 희망입니다. 엄한 표정이나 날카로운 말들은 그들이 희망을 볼 수 없게 막아버립니다. 아나니아처럼, 아니면 나의 볼링장 주인처럼, 예수님을 따르는 사람들은 다른 사람들의 삶을 바꾸어놓을 수 있는 그 만남의 순간에 은혜의 얼굴을 보여줄 수 있어야 합니다.

Unexpected Grace

It was an early Saturday morning in my sophomore year of high school, and I was eager to get to my job at the local bowling lanes. The evening before, I had stayed late to mop the muddy tile floors because the janitor called in sick. I hadn’t bothered to tell the boss about the janitor so I could surprise him. After all, What could go wrong? I thought.

Plenty, as it turns out.

Stepping in the door, I saw inches of standing water, with bowling pins, rolls of toilet paper, and boxes of paper scoresheets bobbing on top. Then I realized what I had done: While doing the floors, I had left a large faucet running overnight! Incredibly, my boss greeted me with a huge hug and a big smile—“for trying,” he said.

Saul was actively punishing and harassing Christians (ACTS 9:1–2) when he came face to face with Jesus on the road to Damascus (VV 3–4). Jesus confronted the soon-to-be-called apostle Paul with his sinful actions. Blinded by the experience, Saul/Paul would need a Christian—Ananias—to restore his sight to him in an act of courage and grace (V 17).

Both Saul and I received unexpected grace.

Most people know they’re messed up. Instead of lectures, they need a hope for redemption. Stern faces or sharp words can block their view of that hope. Like Ananias, or even my boss, followers of Jesus must become the face of grace in these life-changing encounters with others. - RANDY KILGORE

먼저 해야 할 일을 먼저

비행기에 타면 이륙하기 전에 항공사 승무원이 기내에 기압이 떨어질 경우에 대비한 안전수칙을 설명해줍니다. 승객들은 천장에서 산소마스크가 떨어져 내려오면 다른 사람을 돕기 전에 자신이 먼저 착용해야 한다는 설명을 듣습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 왜냐하면 다른 사람을 돕기 전에 자신이 먼저 신체적으로 건강해야 하기 때문입니다.

바울은 디모데에게 보낸 서신에서 다른 사람을 돕고 섬기기 전에 먼저 자신의 영적인 건강을 유지하는 것이 중요하다고 강조했습니다. 그는 디모데에게 거짓 교훈에 맞서고(디모데전서 4:1-5), 잘못된 가르침을 바로잡는 등(6-8절), 목회자로서의 많은 책임을 상기시켰습니다. 그러나 그가 맡은 일을 수행하기 전에 가장 중요한 것은 “[그] 자신과 가르침을 살펴 이 일을 계속하는”(16절) 것이었습니다. 그는 다른 사람들을 보살피기 전에 자신과 주님의 관계를 먼저 확실히 해야 할 필요가 있었습니다.

바울이 디모데에게 당부한 말은 우리에게도 마찬가지로 적용됩니다. 우리는 매일 주님을 모르는 사람들과 만납니다. 우리가 먼저 하나님의 말씀과 기도와 성령님의 능력으로 영적인 산소가 충만하게 될 때 하나님과의 관계를 올바르게 유지할 수 있습니다. 그럴 때 우리는 영적으로 건강하게 되어 다른 사람들을 도울 수 있습니다.

First Things First

When you travel by air, before the flight takes off an airline employee presents a safety briefing, which explains what to do if there is a loss of cabin pressure. Passengers are told that oxygen masks will drop from the compartment above and they are to put one on themselves before helping others. Why? Because before you can help anyone else, you need to be physically alert yourself.

When Paul wrote to Timothy, he stressed the importance of maintaining his own spiritual health before helping and serving others. He reminded Timothy of his many responsibilities as a pastor: There were false teachings to contend with (1 TIM 4:1–5) and wrong doctrines to correct (VV 6–8). But to discharge his duties well, what was most important was to “watch [his] life and doctrine closely [and] persevere in them” (V 16). He needed to take care of his own relationship with the Lord first before he could attend to others.

What Paul told Timothy applies to us too. Each day we encounter people who do not know the Lord. When we tank up on our spiritual oxygen first through time in God’s Word, prayer, and the enabling of the Holy Spirit, we keep our relationship right with God. 그리 아니하실지라도 하나님을 신뢰함

1992년에 일어난 사고 때문에 나는 등과 어깨, 목의 만성적인 통증으로 고생하고 있습니다. 견디기 힘든 극심한 고통으로 절망적인 순간들을 지나는 동안에는 주님을 의지하거나 찬양하는 일이 언제나 쉽지는 않습니다. 그러나 참기 힘든 그 순간에도 하나님이 계속 나와 함께 하시는 것이 나에게 위로가 됩니다. 주님의 변함없는 선하심과 무한하신 능력, 그리고 지속적인 은혜는 나를 안심시키고 또 힘을 줍니다. 주님을 의심하려는 유혹을 받을 때 나는 사드락과 메삭, 아벳느고의 굳건한 믿음으로부터 용기를 얻습니다. 그들은 하나님을 경배하였으며 절망적으로 보이는 순간에도 하나님께서 그들과 함께 하심을 믿었습니다.

느부갓네살 왕이 이 세 사람에게 하나님을 버리고 금 신상에 절하지 않으면 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 속에 던지겠다고 협박했을 때 (다니엘 3:13-15), 그들은 용기와 자신감에 찬 믿음을 보여주었습니다. 비록 그들이 처한 현재의 곤경으로부터 하나님이 구원해주시지 않는다 할지라도(18절) 하나님은 경배를 받으시기에 합당한 분(17절)이라는 것을 그들은 조금도 의심하지 않았습니다. 하나님은 그들이 도움을 필요로 할 때 그들을 홀로 두지 않으시고 풀무불 속에서 그들과 함께 계셔서 보호하셨습니다(24-25절).

하나님은 우리도 홀로 버려두지 않으십니다. 느부갓네살의 풀무불 같은 극심한 시련 속에서도 하나님은 우리와 함께 계십니다. 우리의 고통이 이 현실에서 끝나지 않을지라도, 하나님은 현재나 미래에도 언제나 전능하시고 신실하시며 또 선하십니다. 우리는 변함없는 사랑으로 임재하시는 하나님을 의지할 수 있습니다.

Trusting God Even If

Due to an injury that occurred in 1992, I suffer from chronic pain in my upper back, shoulders, and neck. During the most excruciating and disheartening moments, it’s not always easy to trust or praise the Lord. But when my situation feels unbearable, God’s constant presence comforts me. He strengthens me and reassures me of His unchanging goodness, limitless power, and sustaining grace. And when I’m tempted to doubt my Lord, I’m encouraged by the determined faith of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They worshiped God and trusted He was with them, even when their situation seemed hopeless.

When King Nebuchadnezzar threatened to throw them into a blazing furnace if they didn’t turn away from the true God to worship his golden statue (DAN 3:13–15), these three men displayed courageous and confident faith. They never doubted the Lord was worthy of their worship (V 17), “even if” He didn’t rescue them from their current predicament (V 18). And God didn’t leave them alone in their time of need; He joined and protected them in the furnace (VV 24–25).

God doesn’t leave us alone either. He remains with us through trials that can feel as destructive as Nebuchadnezzar’s furnace. Even if our suffering doesn’t end on this side of eternity, God is and always will be mighty, trustworthy, and good. We can rely on His constant and loving presence. - XOCHITL DIXON

메이셀을 사랑하시는 예수님

내 여동생 메이셀은 어렸을 때 우리가 잘 아는 찬송가를 자기 식으로 고쳐 부르곤 했습니다. “예수님 날 사랑하심을 성경이 메이셀에게 말해주네.” 이렇게 부르는 것이 내 귀에 아주 거슬렸습니다. “더 현명한” 언니들 중 하나였던 나는 “메이셀에게”가 아니라 “나에게”가 맞다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 하지만 메이셀은 늘 자기 이름을 넣어 그렇게 불렀습니다.

이제 나는 내 여동생이 전적으로 옳았다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 성경은 진실로 메이셀뿐 아니라 우리 모두에게 예수님이 우리를 사랑하신다고 말하고 있습니다. 우리는 계속 반복해서 성경에서 그 사실을 볼 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, “예수께서 사랑 하시는 그 제자”(요한복음 21:7,20)라고 한 요한 사도의 기록을 보십시오. 요한은 또 성경구절중 우리가 가장 잘 알고 있는 요한복음 3장 16절 말씀으로 우리에게 하나님의 사랑을 말해줍니다. “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 그를 믿는 자마다 멸망하지 않고 영생을 얻게하려 하심이라.”

요한은 요한1서 4장 10절에서 다시 사랑의 말씀을 강조합니다. “사랑은 여기 있으니 우리가 하나님을 사랑한 것이 아니요 하나님이 우리를 사랑하사 우리 죄를 속하기 위하여 화목 제물로 그 아들을 보내셨음이라.” 요한이 예수님이 자기를 사랑하신다는 것을 알았던 것처럼 우리도 그와 똑같은 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리를 사랑하십니다. 성경이 그렇게 말씀하고 있습니다.

Jesus Loves Maysel

When my sister Maysel was little, she would sing a familiar song in her own way: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells Maysel.” This irritated me to no end! As one of her older, “wiser” sisters, I knew the words were “me so,” not “Maysel.” Yet she persisted in singing it her way.

Now I think my sister had it right all along. The Bible does indeed tell Maysel, and all of us, that Jesus loves us. Over and over again we read that truth. Take, for example, the writings of the apostle John, “the disciple whom Jesus loved” (JOHN 21:7, 20). He tells us about God’s love in one of the best-known verses of the Bible: John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

John reinforces that message of love in 1 John 4:10: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” Just as John knew Jesus loved him, we too can have that same assurance: Jesus does love us. The Bible tells us so. - ALYSON KIEDA

맥퍼슨 아파트에서의 크리스마스

우리가 사는 맥퍼슨 가든 아파트 72단지에는 가족이나 개인들을 포함해 약 230 가구가 살고 있습니다. 사람들은 각자 살아온 자신의 삶의 이야기가 있습니다. 10층에 사는 한 할머니는 자녀들이 모두 장성하여 결혼하고 출가하여 이제 혼자 살고 있습니다. 몇 집 건너서는 남매를 키우는 젊은 부부가 살고 있고, 몇 층 아래에는 젊은 군인이 살고 있습니다. 그는 전에 교회에 나온 적이 있는데, 어쩌면 이번 크리스마스에 교회에 다시 나올지도 모릅니다. 나는 작년 크리스마스때 우리 교인들과 함께 동네를 돌아다니며 크리스마스 캐럴을 불러주면서 이들을 모두 만났었습니다.

최초의 크리스마스 때와 마찬가지로 매번 크리스마스가 와도 하나님께서 이 세상에 아기 예수로 오신 것을 모르는 사람들이 많이 있습니다(누가복음 1:68; 2:21). “온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식”(2:10)인 크리스마스의 중요성을 모르는 이들도 있습니다. 그렇습니다. 온 백성입니다! 우리의 국적이나 문화, 성별, 그리고 사는 형편에 상관없이 예수님은 우리를 위해 죽으시고 우리의 죄를 온전히 용서하심으로 다시 하나님과의 관계를 회복하고 그분의 사랑과 기쁨, 평화와 희망을 누릴 수 있게 해주셨습니다. 옆집 아주머니로부터 점심을 같이 하는 직장동료에 이르기까지 모든 사람들이 이 놀라운 소식을 들어야만 합니다!

첫 성탄절에는 천사들이 이 기쁜 소식을 전했습니다. 이제 하나님은 이 소식을 다른 사람들에게 전하기 위해 우리를 통해 일하시기를 바라십니다.

Christmas at MacPherson

About 230 families and individuals live at MacPherson Gardens, Block 72 in my neighborhood. Each person has his or her own life story. On the tenth floor resides an elderly woman whose children have grown up, gotten married, and moved out. She lives by herself now. Just a few doors away from her is a young couple with two kids—a boy and a girl. And a few floors below lives a young man serving in the army. He has been to church before; maybe he will visit again on Christmas Day. I met these people last Christmas when our church went caroling in the neighborhood to spread Christmas cheer.

Every Christmas—as on the first Christmas—there are many people who do not know that God has entered into our world as a baby whose name is Jesus (LUKE 1:68; 2:21). Or they do not know the significance of that event—it is “good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (2:10). Yes, all people! Regardless of our nationality, culture, gender, or financial status, Jesus came to die for us and offer us complete forgiveness so that we can be reconciled with Him and enjoy His love, joy, peace, and hope. All people, from the woman next door to the colleagues we have lunch with, need to hear this wonderful news!

On the first Christmas, the angels were the bearers of this joyous news. Today, God desires to work through us to take the story to others. - POH FANG CHIA

기다림

“크리스마스까지 얼마 남았어요?” 우리 아이들이 어렸을 때 되풀이해서 물었던 질문입니다. 우리는 크리스마스까지 남은 날짜를 카운트다운 해주는 재림절 달력을 사용했지만, 아이들에게는 그 기다림이 여전히 몹시 지루하게 느껴졌던 것입니다.

우리는 어린아이가 기다림을 힘들어 한다는 것은 쉽게 이해하지만, 이것이 하나님을 믿는 모든 사람들에게도 똑같은 도전이 될 수 있다는 것을 과소평가하는 것 같습니다. 예를 들어, “여호와의 능력을 의지하고 서서 그 무리를 먹일”(4절) “이스라엘을 다스릴 자”(5:2)가 베들레헴에서 나실 것이라고 약속한 선지자 미가의 메시지를 들은 사람들을 생각해보십시오. 그 사람들이 거의 7백년을 기다린 후에야 예수님께서 베들레헴에서 태어나심으로 그 예언의 앞부분이 성취 되었습니다(마태복음 2:1). 그러나 그 예언의 다른 부분은 아직 이루어지지 않았습니다. 우리는 예수님께서 재림하여 모든 하나님의 사람들이 “안전하게 살며”, 그리고 “그의 위대함이 땅 끝까지 이를”(미가 5:4, 현대인의 성경) 그때를 아직 소망 가운데 기다리고 있습니다. 그때가 되면 오랜 기다림이 끝나고 우리는 크게 기뻐할 것입니다.

우리 대부분에게 기다림은 쉽지 않지만, 기다리는 동안 하나님이 우리와 함께 하시겠다고 하신 약속을 지키시리라는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다(마태복음 28:20). 왜냐하면 예수님께서 작은 베들레헴에서 태어나셨을 때 흠이 없이 완전한 모습으로 세상에 오셨기 때문입니다 (요한복음 10:10 참조). 주님의 재림을 손꼽아 기다리는 동안 우리는 주님이 오늘 우리와 함께 하심을 즐거워할 수 있습니다.

Waiting

“How much longer until it’s Christmas?” When my children were little, they asked this question repeatedly. Although we used a daily Advent calendar to count down the days to Christmas, they still found the waiting excruciating.

We can easily recognize a child’s struggle with waiting, but we might under-estimate the challenge it can involve for all of God’s people. Consider, for instance, those who received the message of the prophet Micah, who promised that out of Bethlehem would come a “ruler over Israel” (5:2) who would “stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD ” (V 4). The initial fulfillment of this prophecy came when Jesus was born in Bethlehem (MATT 2:1) —after the people had waited some 700 years. But some of the prophecy’s fulfillment is yet to come. For we wait in hope for the return of Jesus, when all of God’s people will “live securely” and “his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth” (MIC 5:4). Then we will rejoice greatly, for our long wait will be over.

Most of us don’t find waiting easy, but we can trust that God will honor His promises to be with us as we wait (MATT 28:20). For when Jesus was born in little Bethlehem, He ushered in life in all its fullness (SEE JOHN 10:10)—life without condemnation. We enjoy His presence with us today while we eagerly wait for His return. - AMY BOUCHER PYE
