우정의 벤치

한 젊은 환자가 정신건강 치료를 받으러 병원에 갈 버스 요금이 없어서 스스로 생을 마감했습니다. 그 사실이 무척 괴로웠던 의사 치반다는 누구나 쉽게 치료를 받을 수 있는 방법을 고안했습니다. 그렇게 탄생한 ‘우정의 벤치’ 프로그램은 치료가 필요한 사람들 옆에 상담사가 자연스럽게 앉아 대화하며 상담을 제공하는 방식입니다. 놀라운 점은 상담사로 훈련된 사람들이 바로 마을 할머니들이라는 사실입니다! 한 인터뷰에서 치반다 박사는 이렇게 말했습니다. “할머니들은 그들의 지역사회에 깊이 뿌리를 내리고 있습니다. 그리고 사람들이 자기가 존중 받고 이해 받는다고 느끼게 하는 놀라운 능력을 갖고 있습니다.”

느헤미야 3장에서도 색다른 그룹의 사람들이 참여한 또다른 프로젝트를 볼 수 있습니다. 당시 이스라엘 사람들은 “더 이상 수치를 당하지 않도록”(2:17, 현대인의 성경) 성벽을 재건해야 한다고 생각했습니다. 예루살렘이 무너져 폐허가 되었을 때 주변 나라들은 그들의 몰락을 조롱했습니다. 그래서 금세공업자 웃시엘(3:8) 뿐 아니라 그 지방을 다스리는 살룸(3:12) 같이 다른 재능을 가진 이들도 함께 그 일에 참여했습니다.

치반다 박사가 짐바브웨의 정신건강관리 분야에 변화를 가져온 할머니들의 영향력과 공감 능력을 미리 알아본 것처럼, 우리도 각 사람의 장점을 볼 수 있도록 하나님이 우리의 눈을 열어 주시기를 바랍니다. 하나님은 우리 각자에게 고유한 경험과 자원, 그리고 재능을 주셨습니다(로마서 12:6). 교회를 세우고 우리 지역공동체를 섬기는 일에 하나님이 우리를 사용하시도록 맡겨 드립시다.

THE FRIENDSHIP BENCH

A young patient committed suicide because he couldn’t afford the bus fare to the hospital for mental health treatment. Distressed, Dr. Chibanda tested ways to make treatment more accessible. Friendship Bench was born, a program where therapists sit on discreetly placed benches, ready to counsel people with needs. And who did he train as therapists? Grandmothers! In an interview, Dr. Chibanda shared, “[Grandmothers] are rooted in their communities . . . they have an amazing ability to . . . make people feel respected and understood.”

In Nehemiah 3, we read of another project that involved unconventional groups of people. They understood that the city’s wall had to be rebuilt so they’d “no longer be in disgrace” (2:17). As Jerusalem lay in ruins, the surrounding nations mocked its defeat. And besides professional craftsmen like Uzziel, who was a goldsmith (3:8), others who may have had other talents—like Shallum, a district ruler—chipped in too (V. 12).

Just as Dr. Chibanda saw the influence and compassion of grandmothers to make a difference in mental healthcare in Zimbabwe, may God open our eyes to see the strengths of each person. God has gifted each of us with unique experiences, resources, and talents (ROMANS 12:6). Let’s allow Him to use us in building up the church and serving our community.

탕감된 빚

한 의사가 30년 가까이 암 환자를 돌보다 은퇴하기로 결정했습니다. 병원 회계 정산을 위해 관련 회사와 협의하던 중, 그는 환자들이 아직 그에게 갚지 못한 65만 달러의 진료비를 탕감해 주기로 했습니다. 그 일과 관련하여 한 인터뷰에서 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “아픈 환자들이 건강 뿐 아니라 가족, 직장, 그리고 돈 걱정까지 해야 한다는 사실이 늘 마음에 걸렸습니다. 그것 때문에 저는 늘 괴로웠습니다.”

우리가 재정적으로 큰 빚을 진 적은 없더라도, 우리 모두 영적인 면에서 그와 유사한 것을 경험한 바 있습니다. 성경은 죄를 “빚”(마태복음 6:12)에 비유하며, 우리가 하나님께 진 빚은 스스로 갚을 방법이 없다고 말합니다. 자선단체에 기부하거나, 다른 사람을 돕거나, 하나님과 타협하려는 것으로는 그 빚을 해결할 수 없습니다. 오직 예수님만이 우리의 소망이십니다. 그리스도께서는 죽음과 부활을 통해 “우리를 거스르고 불리하게 하는 법조문으로 쓴 증서를 지우시고 제하여 버리사 십자가에 못 박으셨습니다”(골로새서 2:14).

우리가 저지른 죄를 대신하여 치르신 예수님의 희생을 받아들일 때 우리는 죄의 짐에서 완전히 벗어나 자유로운 새 날을 맞이할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 우리 삶에서 사람들과 여러 상황들을 사랑으로 대할 때, 하나님의 자비와 용서가 세상에 빛으로 드러날 수 있기를 소망합니다.

NO MORE DEBT

A doctor decided to retire after treating cancer patients for nearly thirty years. While working with a billing company to resolve his clinic’s finances, he opted to forgive $650,000 of debt people still owed him. “I’ve always been rather uncomfortable with sick patients not only having to worry about their own health,” the physician explained in a related interview, “[but also] their families, and their jobs, [and] money. That’s always tugged at me.”

Even if we’ve never been deep in financial debt, all of us have experienced something similar in a spiritual sense. The Bible likens sin to “debts” (MATTHEW 6:12). It also says there’s no way for us to repay what we owe God. We can’t donate money to charity, serve others, or work out a deal with Him to cover what we owe. Jesus is our only hope. Through His death and resurrection, Christ “canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross” (COLOSSIANS 2:14).

Accepting Jesus’ sacrifice for the wrong things we’ve done means waking up to a new day, completely free from the burden of sin. May God’s mercy and forgiveness shine into the world as He helps us lovingly address people and circumstances in our lives.

영원히 살 수 있을까요?

온라인 뉴스의 댓글 부분에 글을 쓰는 것은 위험하면서도 매혹적입니다. 영원히 살기 위해 노력하는 백만장자의 인터뷰에 한 독자가 마태복음 16장 25절을 인용해 이런 답글을 달았습니다. “‘누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라’ – 예수.” 다른 독자가 그 답글에 댓글을 붙였습니다. “그분에 관해 쓴 책이 있지 않았나요?” 세 번째 독자가 답했습니다. “있어요, 소설.”

예수님을 믿는 것에 대해 조롱하는 사람은 언제나 존재합니다. 바울 사도가 공개 토론장에 서서 수많은 아테네 사람들에게 예수님에 대해 이야기했을 때 그 반응이 다양했습니다. “그들이 죽은 자의 부활을 듣고 어떤 사람은 조롱도 하고”(사도행전 17:32), 반면 다른 사람들은 “이 일에 대하여 네 말을 다시 듣겠다”(32절)고 했습니다. 그리고 그 중에는 믿는 사람들도 있었습니다(34절).

CAN WE LIVE FOREVER?

It’s risky to venture into the comments section of online news sites. Risky, but fascinating. Commenting on an interview with a millionaire endeavoring to live forever in this life, one reader posted this from Matthew 16:25: “ ‘Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.’ — Jesus.” Reacting to that comment, another reader posted, “Wasn’t there a book written about Him? ” To which a third reader replied, “Yes, fiction.”

There are always those who will mock belief in Jesus. When the apostle Paul stood in a public forum to tell a large group of Athenians about Christ, results were mixed. “When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered” (ACTS 17:32). Others, however, said, “We want to hear you again on this subject” (V. 32). And some believed (V. 34).

How others respond to the truth of the Bible is between them and God. But it’s the claim that we can live forever in this life that’s fiction. Our bodies are destined to die. In contrast, the Bible tells us of the one who is “the way and the truth and the life” (JOHN 14:6). Like Paul, it’s our task is to share with anyone who will listen what this Man has done for us. We can trust the Holy Spirit to do the rest.

일을 줄이겠다는 결심

새해 목표를 생각할 때 가장 먼저 떠오르는 것은 여러 가지 높은 목표를 세워 놓고는 이루지 못하는 일일 것입니다(사람들은 2월 중순이면 벌써 새해 목표의 80%를 포기한다고 합니다). 작가 에이미 윌슨은 “삶이 나아지려면 나 자신을 고쳐야 한다는 생각 자체”를 완전히 버리는 것이 더 좋은 방법이라고 제안합니다. 또한 새해라고 결심을 더 추가할 것이 아니라 오히려 해야 할 일을 덜어내고 “우리에게 별로 유익이 되지도 않으면서 시간과 에너지만 빼앗는, 버리지 못하는 거창한 결심들”을 마침내 “내려놓기 시작”하는 기회로 삼으라고 권고합니다.

늘 더 많은 일과 역할을 감당하라는 세상의 지속적인 압박 속에서, 우리는 예수님이 제자들에게 권하셨던 근본적으로 다른 삶의 방식을 놓치기 쉽습니다. 그것은 예수님 안에 거하는 삶입니다. 요한복음 15장에서 예수님은 자신을 “참 포도 나무”(1절)로, 제자들을 “가지”(5절)로 표현하셨습니다.

포도나무 가지가 성장하는 이유는 가지 스스로 더 노력해서가 아니라, 포도나무로부터 양분을 공급받기 때문입니다. 이처럼 우리가 원하는 영적 성장은 자신의 힘에 의지하던 삶을 내려놓고, 오직 그리스도 안에서 쉼을 얻으며 그분이 주시는 생명의 양분을 받아들일 때 비로소 이루어집니다. 예수님은 말씀하십니다. “너희가 나를 떠나서는 아무것도 할 수 없음이라”(5절).

RESOLVING TO DO LESS

When we think about New Year’s resolutions, what probably comes to mind is a list of lofty ambitions we rarely achieve (80 percent of New Year’s resolutions are already abandoned by mid-February). Author Amy Wilson suggests a better idea might be to reject entirely “the idea that we have to fix ourselves before our lives can get better.” Wilson suggests that, instead of adding commitments, we see the new year as an opportunity to do less, to finally “start saying no” to some of the “oversized and ongoing commitments that take our time and energy without giving us much in return.”

In a world of constant pressure to do and be more, it can be easy to miss the radically different rhythm of life Jesus invited His disciples into—one of abiding in Him. In John 15, Jesus described Himself as “the true vine” (V. 1) and His disciples as “the branches” (V. 5).

Vine branches don’t grow through working harder but through the nourishment received from the vine. So, too, the growth we long for can only be experienced when we let go of self-reliance in exchange for resting in and finding nourishment in Christ, for “apart from [Him] you can do nothing” (V. 5).

Through Jesus, we have hope for a life of less anxiety. Less striving. And more resting in God’s love and letting it flow to those around us (VV. 12, 17).

하나님의 신실하신 사랑

교회에서 요양원 봉사활동을 하던 중, 거기 계신 한 연로하신 분으로부터 몇 년 전 그의 딸이 그를 거기로 데려와 입구 보도에 놓고 갔다는 이야기를 들었습니다. 에드라고 하는 그분은 휠체어를 타고 있어서 일어나 딸을 쫓아갈 수가 없었다고 합니다. 딸은 뒤도 돌아 보지 않고 차를 몰고 떠나 버렸습니다. 딸은 올 때 “우리 좋은 호텔로 갈 거예요.”라고 했다고 합니다. 그날은 그가 딸을 마지막으로 본 날이었습니다.

대부분의 가족은 노령의 가족을 사랑으로 돌보지만, 반대로 이렇게 명백한 학대 사례는 에드 같은 사람에게 깊은 상처로 남았습니다. 그는 아직도 그 날의 악몽에 시달리고 있습니다.

수세기 전, 한 젊은이도 트라우마를 겪었습니다(창세기 37:12-36). 요셉의 형들은 요셉을 구덩이에 던져 넣었다가 이집트로 가는 상인들에게 팔아 넘겼습니다. 그러나 “여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로”(39:2) 낯선 땅에서 요셉은 주인 집(7-10절)과 감옥에서 용기를 가지고 옳은 일을 행하며 하나님이 “그에게 인자를 더하사 은혜를 받게”(21절)하신 것을 알았습니다. 요셉에게는 과거의 트라우마가 있었지만 하나님의 도우심으로 자신이 하는 모든 일에서 성공할 수 있었습니다(23절). 마침내 요셉은 바로의 총리가 되었고, 자신의 가정을 이루게 되었습니다(41:41-52). 나중에 그는 형제들과도 화해하게 되었습니다 (45:12-15).

사람들은 우리를 아프게 할 수 있지만, 하나님은 절대 그러지 않습니다. 하나님은 요셉에게 하신 것과는 다른 방법으로 우리를 치유하시지만, 우리에게 똑같이 신실한 사랑을 약속하십니다. 우리의 마음을 치유하시는 하나님을 신뢰하며 그분의 인도하심을 따릅시다.

GOD’S FAITHFUL LOVE

During our church outreach in a nursing home, an elderly resident told me of how his daughter had driven him there years before and simply left him on the sidewalk. In his wheelchair, Ed couldn’t get up to run after her. She’d returned to the car without looking back and had driven away. “We’re going to a nice hotel,” she’d said earlier. That day was the last time he saw her.

Vastly different in nature from the many loving family experiences of eldercare, this clear case of abuse traumatized Ed. He still has nightmares about that day.

Centuries ago, a young man also suffered trauma (GENESIS 37:12-36). Joseph’s brothers threw him into a cistern and sold him to traders going to Egypt. But “the Lord was with Joseph” (39:2). In an unfamiliar land, as he courageously did what was right in God’s eyes, both in his master’s house (VV. 7-10) and in prison, Joseph realized that God “showed him his faithful love” (V. 21 NLT). Despite the trauma of his past, Joseph was able to succeed in whatever he did because God helped him (V. 23). Eventually he became second-in-command to Pharaoh and raised a family of his own (41:41-52). Later, he even reconciled with his brothers (45:12-15).

People may hurt us, but God never will. Although He may help us heal in ways different from what He did for Joseph, He promises us His same faithful love. Let’s follow His leading as we trust Him to heal our hearts.

JOYFUL RESILIENCE

Scientists studied the resilience of sixteen societies worldwide, including the Yukon and Australian Outback. They analyzed thousands of years of archaeological records, tracing the impact of famines, wars, and climate. One factor stood out—the frequency of downturns. One would think that they would weaken societies, but the researchers found the opposite to be true. Instead, they found that societies that faced frequent hardships developed resilience, bouncing back faster from future challenges. Stress, it appears, can forge resilience.

The prophet Habakkuk understood this kind of resilience. As he considered Judah’s impending devastation, he painted a bleak picture: “crop fails,” “no sheep . . . no cattle,” and barren land (3:17). Amid earthly securities being stripped away, however, the prophet declared, “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior” (V. 18). His joy wasn’t tied to circumstances and earthly pleasures but anchored in God’s unchanging character and salvation. In the bleakest seasons, the prophet chose joy and became more resilient.

Like Habakkuk and those resilient societies, our spiritual endurance grows through repeated adversity. When we face difficult seasons in life, let’s cling to our hope in God and remember that He’s with us—using our challenges to grow our joy and resilient faith.

예레미야는 이스라엘에게 언젠가 “[그분의] 법을 그들의 속에 두며 그들의 마음에 그것을 기록하리라”(31:33)는 하나님의 메시지를 전했습니다. 그리스도 안에서 성취된 이 새로운 언약(히브리서 8:6-13)에 따라 모든 사람은 믿음을 통해 하나님의 은혜로 변화될 수 있다는 것입니다. 그리고 이제 그분의 영이 우리 안에 거하심(로마서 8:11)으로 하나님의 도덕 법이 우리 마음에 기록되었습니다. 러셀을 비롯한 믿는 사람 모두에게 성령의 권능은 하나님을 탄식하게 하고 우리를 파괴하는 해로운 행동으로부터 돌아설 수 있는 데 필요한 것을 주십니다.

변화는 항상 즉각적이거나 쉬운 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 어렵고 심지어 중독성 있는 죄를 다룰 때 하나님께서 우리의 마음을 변화시킬 수 있다는 것을 기억합시다(예레미야 31:33). 하나님은 너희가 “나를 알게 될 것”이라고 하셨습니다(34절, 쉬운성경). 우리는 또한 마음을 변화시키시는 그분의 능력을 알 수 있습니다.

HEARTS TRANSFORMED BY GOD

Like many people who struggle with pornography, Russell was exposed to it at a young age. The desire to use it was overpowering, and it poisoned his heart. “My life [became] completely saturated by it,” he writes, “so much so that it was like a cancer that was deeply rooted into my very fiber.” By God’s grace, he was finally set free of porn’s power—along with other addictions—when he received salvation in Jesus and was transformed from the inside out. “I credit it all to Jesus Christ, . . . [He’s] the one who delivered me,” Russell says.

Jeremiah delivered a message from God to Israel that one day He would “put [His] law in their minds and write it on their hearts” (31:33). Under this new covenant, fulfilled in Christ (HEBREWS 8:6-13), all people could be transformed by God’s grace through faith. And now, “his Spirit . . . lives in [us]” (ROMANS 8:11), and God’s moral law has been written on our hearts. For Russell, and for all who believe, the Holy Spirit’s power provides what’s needed to turn from harmful behavior that displeases God and seeks to destroy us.

Transformation isn’t always instantaneous or easy. But let’s remember that when we’re dealing with difficult—even addictive— sin, God can transform our hearts (JEREMIAH 31:33). He says, you “will know me” (V. 34 NLT), and we can also know His heartchanging power.

우리를 사랑하는 구원자

한 산림 관리인이 거센 산불 속에서 새끼 곰 한 마리를 구출했습니다. 사람들이 아직도 불길과 싸우고 있는 가운데 그 관리인은 좀 떨어진 안전한 복구 현장에서 구출한 곰을 땅에 내려 놓았습니다. 새끼 곰은 조그마한 뒷발로 서서 그의 종아리를 끌어안았습니다. 관리인은 부드럽게 밀쳐냈습니다. 절박하게 울부짖듯 입을 벌린 아기 곰은 자기를 구출한 사람 품에 있으려고 발톱을 세워 기어올랐습니다. 새끼 곰이 그의 팔에 매달리자 친절한 남자는 하는 수 없이 이 털복숭이 친구의 머리를 다정하게 쓰다듬었습니다.

새끼 곰이 자신을 죽음에서 구해 준 사람에게 확신을 갖고 필사적으로 매달렸던 것처럼 우리도 우리를 죽음에서 구하신 궁극적인 구원자 예수님께 매달릴 때 무슨 일이 일어날까요?

하나님이 지으신 모든 사람에게는 구원이 필요합니다. 시편 기자 다윗도 구원자, 곧 자신의 기도를 들으시고 응답하시는 하나님이 필요하다고 고백했습니다(시편 55:1-2). 그는 눈앞에 있는 어려움과 위협, 고통, 두려움을 인정하면서(3-5절) 확신을 가지고 하나님께 매달렸습니다. “나는 하나님께 부르짖으니 여호와께서 나를 구원하시리로다”라고 그는 말했습니다(16절). “저녁과 아침과 정오에 내가 근심하여 탄식하리니 여호와께서 내 소리를 들으시리로다”(17절). 다윗은 끊임없이 기도했습니다. 그는 하나님께서 들으시고 자신을 “구원하사 평안하게” 해 주실 것을 믿었습니다(18절).

우리도 다윗처럼 어떤 어려움이나 고통 앞에서 하나님께 부르짖을 수 있습니다. 우리를 찾으시는 사랑하는 구원자 하나님은 그분을 찾을 때 들으시고 구원해 주십니다.

OUR LOVING RESCUER

During a raging wildfire, a forest ranger saved a bear cub. At a recovery site safely away from those still fighting the inferno, he placed the rescued animal on the ground. Standing on its tiny back paws, the cub hugged the man’s calf. The ranger gently pried himself away. Mouth wide as if crying out in desperation, the little bear clambered and clawed in an attempt to remain in the refuge of his rescuer’s embrace. As the cub clung to his arm, the kind man relented and rubbed his furry friend’s head.

What if we pursued our ultimate rescuer—Jesus—with the same fierce desperation and confidence as the bear cub who pursued and clung to the one who saved him from death?

All people God made need saving. The psalmist David confessed his need for a rescuer—for God to hear and answer his prayers (PSALM 55:1-2). Admitting he faced troubles, threats, suffering, and fear (VV. 3-5), David pursued God with assurance. “As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me,” he said (V. 16). “Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice” (V. 17). David prayed continually. He believed God listened and trusted that He would rescue him “unharmed” (V. 18).

When we face difficulties or suffering of any kind, like David, we can cry out to God. Our loving Rescuer, who pursues us, hears and saves us when we pursue Him too.

하나님이 뜨게하신 눈

어느 날 오후 카페에서 나는 옆 테이블에 부모와 함께 있는 어린 아이를 보게 되었습니다. 부모가 친구들과 대화하는 동안 비둘기 하나가 날아 들어와 바닥의 빵 부스러기를 쪼아 먹기 시작했습니다. 이 광경이 너무나 놀라왔던 그 여자아이는 들뜬 소리로 어른들의 관심을 끌려 했지만, 어른들은 아이가 본 것을 보지 못했습니다. 그저 아이에게 한번 웃어주고 자신들의 대화를 이어갔습니다.

한번은 예수님이 제자들에게 가르치는 사역을 하도록 보내셨는데, 이는 엄청난 성공이었습니다(누가복음 10:17). 이에 예수님은 이런 기도를 하셨습니다. “이것을 지혜롭고 슬기 있는 자들에게는 숨기시고 어린 아이들에게는 나타내심을 감사하나이다”(21절). 여기서 “어린 아이들”은 나이가 아닌 지위와 마음의 상태를 말합니다. 복음을 받아들인 것은 겸손하고 평범한 “죄인들”이었고, “지혜롭고 학식있는” 종교 지도자들은 이를 무시했습니다(7:29-34). 하나님은 자신을 누구에게 보여주실지를 정하시고, 예수님은 물어보는 사람들에게 항상 하나님 나라에 대해 더 자세히 설명해 주셨습니다(마태복음 13:36 참조). 진실로 알고자 하는 마음이 없었던 지도자들은 예수님이 누구신지 알아보지 못했습니다.

카페의 어린 소녀는 부모들이 못 본 멋진 것을 보았습니다. 세상의 소음과 바쁨에 정신을 빼앗기거나, 더 알고자 하는 겸손함이 부족해서 하나님께서 자신을 우리에게 보여주시려는 것을 못 보는 일이 없기를 바랍니다.

EYES OPENED BY GOD

In a café one afternoon, I noticed a toddler with her parents at an adjacent table. As the parents talked with their friends, a pigeon flew in and started pecking crumbs from the floor. Filled with awe at this sight, the little girl tried getting the adults’ attention by squealing with delight. But they never got to see what she saw. They just smiled at her and returned to their conversation.

Jesus once sent His disciples on a preaching mission, which turned out to be tremendously successful (LUKE 10:17). “I praise you, Father,” Jesus prayed in response, “because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children” (V. 21). In this case, “little children” didn’t refer to age but status. It was humble, everyday “sinners” who responded to the gospel, while “wise and learned” religious leaders ignored it (7:29-34). While God decides who He reveals Himself to, Jesus always explained more about the kingdom to those who asked (SEE MATTHEW 13:36). The leaders had missed seeing who Jesus was because they didn’t really want to know.

The little girl in the café saw something wonderful while her parents missed out. May we never be so distracted by the world’s chatter, or lacking in humility to seek more understanding, that we miss what God wants to show us about Himself.

“하늘의 우리 왕 탄생을 알리는 캐롤보다 더 즐거운 노래가 어디 있을까?” 17세기 로버트 헤릭의 시 “가장 즐거운 노래”의 이 구절은 현대 합창 작곡가 존 러터에 의해 재해석되어 대림절 시즌에 많이 불리게 되었습니다. 그 부드러운 멜로디는 길고 추운 기다림 끝에 예수님이 오심 으로 따뜻해지는 봄 기운을 느끼게 합니다. 노래하는 이들은 그분께 크리스마스 캐롤을 올려드리고, 듣는 이들은 마음을 올려드리게 됩니다.

러터의 편곡은 예수님께 황금과 유향과 몰약을 가져온 동방박사들에 대한 한 교회의 낭송에 화답하는 형식으로 만들어졌습니다. 이 신비 속의 박사들은 오직 아기 예수님을 경배하기 위해 먼 거리를 여행해 왔습니다(마태복음 2:1-2). 그들은 마침내 예수님을 찾아 “매우 기뻐하며” 경외심으로 절하고 그의 발 앞에 “보물을 열었습니다”(10-11절). 그들은 꿈에서 경고받은 대로 악한 헤롯 왕에게 알리지 않고 떠났습니다(12절).

JESUS, THE GREATEST GIFT

“What sweeter music can we bring/ Than a carol for to sing/ The birth of this our heavenly King?” The lines of this seventeenth-century poem “What Sweeter Music” by Robert Herrick were reimagined by modern-day choral composer John Rutter to become an Advent season favorite. Its gentle melody describes a long, cold season of waiting that’s thawed by the springtime feeling of Jesus’ arrival. The singers bring Him a Christmas carol; the listeners are invited to bring their hearts.

Rutter’s arrangement was commissioned to correspond with a church reading on the wise men who brought Jesus gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These mysterious magi traveled a great distance to meet baby Jesus with the express purpose of worshiping Him (MATTHEW 2:1-2). When they finally found Him, they “were overjoyed,” bowed down in reverence, and “opened their treasures” at His feet (VV. 10-11). Warned in a dream, they left without informing wicked King Herod (V. 12).

The Christmas season shouldn’t focus on material gifts—but it’s certainly about giving and receiving gifts. God gave His Son to heal a broken world. If we’ve never given Him our hearts, today’s a wonderful day to do so. If He already reigns there, let’s offer a carol of peace and joy as we think about His arrival all those years ago in Bethlehem—and wait for His return.
