이해하시는 분

존 베이블러는 텍사스 한 지역의 경찰서와 소방서를 담당하는 목사입니다. 22주 동안의 안식 기간을 얻은 그는 경찰관들이 직면하는 상황들을 더 잘 이해해 보려고 경찰학교의 훈련과정에 참가했습니다. 다른 간부 후보생들과 함께 하며 이들의 직업이 얼마나 어려운 것인지를 알게 되면서, 베이블러는 겸손한 마음과 깊은 이해심을 새롭게 갖게 되었습니다. 앞으로 그는 정신적인 스트레스와 피곤과 상실로 고통받는 경찰관들을 좀 더 잘 상담할 수 있기를 기대하고 있습니다.

우리는 하나님께서 우리를 만드셨고 우리의 모든 일을 보고 계시기 때문에 우리가 당면하는 상황들을 이해하신다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 또 주님은 이 땅에 오셔서 인간의 몸을 입고 사셨기 때문에 우리를 이해하신다는 것을 압니다. 주님은 예수 그리스도라는 인격으로 “육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하셨습니다” (요한복음 1:14).

예수님은 이 땅에 사시며 여러 가지 어려움을 겪으셨습니다. 주님은 태양의 뜨거운 열기와 배고픔의 고통과 집 없는 불안감도 다 느끼셨습니다. 감정적으로는 거절의 아픔과 쓰라린 배신과 끊이지 않는 폭력의 위협을 견뎌내셨습니다.

예수님은 우리가 세상에서 겪는 가장 어려운 문제뿐만 아니라, 친구의 우정과 가족의 사랑이 가져다주는 기쁨도 경험하셨습니다. 주님은 희망을 주십니다. 주님은 통찰력과 사랑으로 우리의 걱정을 끝까지 들어주시는 최고의 상담자이십니다(이사야 9:6). 주님은 “나도 다 경험했어. 내가 이해한단다.”라고 말씀하실 수 있는 분이십니다.

The One Who Understands

John Babler is the chaplain for the police and fire departments in his Texas community. During a twenty-two-week sabbatical from his job, he attended police academy training so that he could better understand the situations law enforcement officers face. Through spending time with the other cadets and learning about the intense challenges of the profession, Babler gained a new sense of humility and empathy. In the future, he hopes to be more effective as he counsels police officers who struggle with emotional stress, fatigue, and loss.

We know that God understands the situations we face because He made us and sees everything that happens to us. We also know He understands because He has been to earth and experienced life as a human being. He “became flesh and made his dwelling among us” as the person of Jesus Christ (JOHN 1:14).

Jesus’s earthly life included a wide range of difficulty. He felt the searing heat of the sun, the pain of an empty stomach, and the uncertainty of homelessness. Emotionally, He endured the tension of disagreements, the burn of betrayal, and the ongoing threat of violence.

Jesus experienced the joys of friendship and family love, as well as the worst problems that we face here on earth. He provides hope. He is the Wonderful Counselor who patiently listens to our concerns with insight and care (ISA. 9:6). He is the One who can say, “I’ve been through that. I understand.” - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

편지 쓰기

우리 어머니와 이모들은 점점 사라져가는 풍습인 편지쓰기를 열심히 하고 있습니다. 이들은 서로 변함없이 매주 편지를 쓰는데, 배달할 것이 없는 날에는 우편집배원이 무슨 일이 있는지 걱정할 정도입니다. 이들의 편지는 친구들과 가족들의 일상적인 일들을 포함해서 삶의 단편들, 기쁨과 가슴 아픈 일들로 가득 차 있습니다.

나는 우리 집안의 여자들이 이렇게 매주 편지하는 것을 즐겁게 생각합니다. 이는 바울 사도가 예수님을 따르는 자들을 향해 “너희는......그리스도의 편지니 이는 먹으로 쓴 것이 아니요 오직 살아 계신 하나님의 영으로 쓴 것”(고린도후서 3:3)이라고 한 말을 이해하는 데 많은 도움이 됩니다. 바울은 그가 전하려는 말씀의 권위를 떨어뜨리려는 거짓 교사들에 대응하여(고린도후서 11장 참조), 고린도에 있는 교인들에게 전에 그가 가르친 대로 참되고 살아계신 하나님을 계속 따르라고 권면했습니다. 그러면서 그는 신자들의 변화된 삶이야말로 바울의 사역 가운데 역사하시는 성령님을 그가 쓴 어떤 편지보다도 더 강력하게 증거하는 것이라며, 그들을 ‘그리스도의 편지’라고 하는 잊지 못할 표현을 사용하며 불렀습니다.

우리 안에 계시는 하나님의 영이 은혜와 구원의 이야기를 써 내려간다니 얼마나 놀라운 일인지요! 글로 쓴 편지도 아주 중요하지만, 복음의 진리를 가장 잘 전하는 것은 바로 우리의 삶입니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 삶을 통해 우리의 긍휼과 섬김, 감사와 기쁨을 큰소리로 알리기 때문입니다. 주님은 우리의 말과 행동을 통해 그분의 희생적인 사랑을 전하십니다. 당신은 오늘 어떤 메시지를 전하시겠습니까?

Writing Letters

My mother and her sisters engage in what is increasingly becoming a lost art form—writing letters. Each week they pen personal words to each other with such consistency that one of their mail-carriers worries when he doesn’t have something to deliver! Their letters brim with the stuff of life, the joys and heartaches along with the daily happenings of friends and family.

I love to reflect on this weekly exercise of the women in my family. It helps me appreciate even more the apostle Paul’s words that those who follow Jesus are “a letter from Christ,” who were “written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God” (2 COR. 3:3). In response to false teachers who wanted to discredit his message (SEE 2 COR. 11), Paul encouraged the church in Corinth to keep on following the true and living God as he had previously taught. In doing so, he memorably described the believers as Christ’s letter, with their transformed lives a more powerful witness to the Spirit working through Paul’s ministry than any written letter could be.

How wonderful that God’s Spirit in us writes a story of grace and redemption! For as meaningful as written words can be, it is our lives that are the best witness to the truth of the gospel, for they speak volumes through our compassion, service, gratitude, and joy. 하나님 바라보기

작가이며 목사인 어윈 루쳐가 텔레비전 쇼의 사회자인 아트링크레터와 하나님을 그리고 있는 한 어린 소년이 주고받은 이야기를 해주었습니다. 링크레터가 재미있어 하며 소년에게 “하나님이 어떻게 생겼는지 아무도 모르는데 네가 어떻게 그리려고?”라고 물어보았습니다.

그러자 소년은 “내가 다 그리면 모두 알게 돼요!”라고 자신 있게 말했습니다.

우리는 때로 ‘하나님은 어떤 분일까? 선하신 분일까? 친절하신 분일까? 관심이 있으신 분일까?’라고 묻습니다. 이런 질문에 대한 간단한 대답은 빌립이 “주여 우리에게 아버지를 보여주옵소서”라고 요청했을 때 예수님이 하신 말씀에서 찾을 수 있습니다. 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “빌립아 내가 이렇게 오래 너희와 함께 있으되 네가 나를 알지 못하느냐 나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았느니라” (요한복음 14:8-9).

당신이 정말 하나님을 보기 원한다면 예수님을 보십시오. “그는 보이지 아니하는 하나님의 형상”(골로새서 1:15)이라고 바울이 말했습니다. 신약성경의 4 복음서, 마태, 마가, 누가, 요한복음을 읽고, 예수님이 하신 일과 하신 말씀을 깊이 생각해보십시오. 그리고 읽으면서 마음속에 당신 나름대로의 하나님의 형상을 “그려보십시오.” 다 읽고 나면 하나님이 어떤 분이신지 좀 더 잘 알게 될 것입니다.

내 친구는 언젠가 그가 믿는 유일하신 하나님은 예수님 안에서 본 그분이라고 말했습니다. 자세히 들여다보면 당신도 동의할 것입니다. 당신이 잘 모를지 몰라도, 예수님은 당신이 일생 동안 찾았던 그 하나님이시기 때문에 그분에 대해서 읽을 때 당신의 가슴이 뛸 것입니다.

Seeing God

Author and pastor Erwin Lutzer recounts a story about television show host Art Linkletter and a little boy who was drawing a picture of God. Amused, Linkletter said, “You can’t do that because nobody knows what God looks like.”

“They will when I get through!” the boy declared.

We may wonder, What is God like? Is He good? Is He kind? Does He care? The simple answer to those questions is Jesus’s response to Philip’s request: “Lord, show us the Father.” Jesus replied, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (JOHN 14:8–9).

If you ever get hungry to see God, look at Jesus. “The Son is the image of the invisible God,” said Paul (COL. 1:15). Read through the four gospels in the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Think deeply about what Jesus did and said. “Draw” your own mental picture of God as you read. You’ll know much more of what He’s like when you’re through.

A friend of mine once told me that the only God he could believe in is the one he saw in Jesus. If you look closely, I think you’ll agree. As you read about Him your heart will leap, for though you may not know it, Jesus is the God you’ve been looking for all your life. - DAVID ROPER

인도하심

나는 얼마 전 우연히 대학 시절에 쓴 일기장을 발견하곤 다시 한번 읽지 않을 수 없었습니다. 일기를 읽으며 그 당시엔 지금과 다른 생각을 하고 있었음을 알 수 있었습니다. 그때 나는 외로움과 믿음에 대한 회의로 아주 힘든 시간을 보내고 있었는데, 뒤돌아보면 하나님께서 지금까지 나를 어떻게 더 좋은 곳으로 인도해주셨는지를 확실히 알 수 있습니다. 그 힘든 날들을 지나는 동안 하나님께서 어떻게 은혜로 이끌어주셨는지를 생각해보니, 지금 내가 힘들어하는 것도 언젠가는 치유하시는 주님의 사랑의 위대한 이야기가 될 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

시편 30편은 질병에서 치유로, 죽음의 위협에서 생명으로, 하나님의 심판에서 그분의 용서로, 슬픔에서 기쁨으로 회복 시키시는 하나님의 능력에 놀라며 감사하는 마음으로 뒤돌아보는 기쁨의 시편입니다(2-3,11절).

이 시편의 저자는 가장 큰 고통의 애가 몇 편을 성경에 남긴 다윗입니다. 하지만 그는 또한 너무나 놀라운 회복을 경험하고 나서 “저녁에는 울음이 깃들일지라도 아침에는 기쁨이 오리로다”(5절)라고 고백할 수 있었습니다. 다윗은 그 모든 고통을 겪는 중에도 그보다 더 놀라운 것, 바로 하나님의 강력한 치유의 손길을 발견하였습니다.

Carried Through

I recently stumbled across some of my journals from college and couldn’t resist taking time to reread them. Reading the entries, I realized I didn’t feel about myself then the same as I do today. My struggles with loneliness and doubts about my faith felt overwhelming at the time, but looking back now I can clearly see how God has carried me to a better place. Seeing how God gently brought me through those days reminded me that what feels overwhelming today will one day be part of a greater story of His healing love.

Psalm 30 is a celebration psalm that similarly looks back with amazement and gratitude on God’s powerful restoration: from sickness to healing, from threat of death to life, from feeling God’s judgment to enjoying His favor, from mourning to joy (VV. 2–3,11).

The psalm is attributed to David, to whom we owe some of the most pain-filled laments in Scripture. But David also experienced restoration so incredible he was able to confess, “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning” (V. 5). Despite all the pain he had endured, David discovered something even greater—God’s powerful hand of healing.

If you are hurting today and need encouragement, recall those times in your past when God carried you through to a place of healing. Pray for trust that He will do so again. - MONICA BRANDS

애도의 목회

2002년 나의 누이 마사 내외가 사고로 세상을 떠나고 몇 달이 지난 후, 한 친구가 교회에서 진행하는 “슬픔을 통한 성장”이라는 워크숍에 나를 초대했습니다. 나는 마지못해 첫날만 참석하고 더 이상은 가지 않으려 했습니다. 그러나 놀랍게도 그곳은 자신의 삶에서 중요한 사람을 잃고 나서 하나님과 다른 사람들의 도움으로 그 사실을 이해하려고 애쓰고 있는 사람들을 돌보는 모임이었습니다. 나는 여러 주 동안 계속해서 참석하여 우리의 슬픔을 함께 나누는 과정을 통해 가족의 죽음을 받아들이고 평안을 얻을 수 있었습니다.

사랑하는 사람이나 친구의 갑작스러운 죽음처럼 예수님의 위대한 증인인 스데반의 죽음도 초대교회 사람들에게 충격과 슬픔을 가져다주었습니다(사도행전 7:57-60). 박해를 눈앞에 두고도 “경건한 사람들이 스데반을 장사하고 위하여 크게 울었습니다”(8:2). 그 믿음의 사람들은 두 가지를 같이 행했습니다. 죽음과 상실에 따른 행위로 스데반을 장사하였고, 그를 위해 크게 울며 슬픔을 함께 나누었습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리는 사랑하는 사람의 죽음을 혼자서 슬퍼할 필요가 없습니다. 상처받은 사람들에게 진실함과 사랑으로 다가가면서, 동시에 우리를 도와주는 사람들의 마음을 겸손히 받아들여야 합니다.

우리가 슬픔을 나눌 때, 우리는 우리의 가장 큰 슬픔을 아시는 예수 그리스도를 통해서 남을 이해하고 평안을 누리는 것을 배워갈 수 있습니다.

The Ministry of Mourning

In 2002, a few months after my sister Martha and her husband, Jim, died in an accident, a friend invited me to a “Growing Through Grief” workshop at our church. I reluctantly agreed to attend the first session but had no intention of going back. To my surprise, I discovered a caring community of people trying to come to grips with a significant loss in their lives by seeking the help of God and others. It drew me back week after week as I worked toward acceptance and peace through the process of sharing our grief together.

Like the sudden loss of a loved one or friend, the death of Stephen, a dynamic witness for Jesus, brought shock and sorrow to those in the early church (ACTS 7:57–60). In the face of persecution, “Godly men buried Stephen and mourned deeply for him” (8:2). These men of faith did two things together: They buried Stephen, an act of finality and loss. And they mourned deeply for him, a shared expression of their sorrow.

As followers of Jesus, we need not mourn our losses alone. In sincerity and love we can reach out to others who are hurting, and in humility we can accept the concern of those who stand beside us.

As we grieve together, we can grow in understanding and in the peace that is ours through Jesus Christ, who knows our deepest sorrow. - DAVID MCCASLAND

하나님께 내려놓음

내가 십대 시절 큰 어려움이나 중요한 결정을 앞두고 힘들어할 때, 어머니는 어떻게 하면 좋을지 생각을 종이에 쓰면서 정리해보는 좋은 방법을 가르쳐주셨습니다. 어떤 수업을 들을 것인지, 어떤 직장을 구할 것인지, 어른이 돼서 겪을 힘든 현실들을 어떻게 극복해나갈 것인지 등, 결정하기가 힘들 때 나는 기본적인 사실들과 가능한 실행 방법 및 그에 따라 예상되는 결과들을 적는 습관을 어머니로부터 배웠습니다. 종이 위에 내 생각을 다 써 놓은 후에는 한 걸음 물러나 내 감정에 치우치지 않고 좀 더 객관적으로 문제를 볼 수 있었습니다.

내 생각을 종이에 적을 때 새로운 시각을 얻게 된 것처럼, 우리의 마음을 하나님께 기도로 쏟아 부으면 하나님의 시각을 갖게 되고 그분의 능력을 깨닫게 되는데 도움이 됩니다. 히스기야 왕은 흉악한 적으로부터 협박 편지를 받고는 바로 그렇게 했습니다. 앗수르가 여러 나라에 한 것처럼 예루살렘을 파괴하겠다고 위협했습니다. 히스기야는 주님 앞에 그 편지를 펴놓고 주님의 백성을 구원하시면 세상이 주 여호와가 “홀로 하나님”이신 줄 알 것이라고 주님께 기도하였습니다(열왕기하 19:19).

염려와 두려움, 또는 우리 힘으로는 도저히 어쩔 방법이 없다고 느껴지는 상황이 오면, 히스기야의 발걸음을 따라 주님께 바로 달려갑시다. 히스기야처럼 우리의 문제를 하나님 앞에 내려놓고 우리의 발걸음을 인도해주시고 우리의 불안한 마음을 평온케 하시는 하나님을 신뢰합시다.

Give It to God

As a teenager, when I became overwhelmed by enormous challenges or high-stakes decisions, my mother taught me the merits of putting pen to paper to gain perspective. When I was uncertain whether to take specific classes or which job to pursue, or how to cope with the frightening realities of adulthood, I learned her habit of writing out the basic facts and the possible courses of action with their likely outcomes. After pouring my heart onto the page, I was able to step back from the problem and view it more objectively than my emotions allowed.

Just as recording my thoughts on paper offered me fresh perspective, pouring our hearts out to God in prayer helps us gain His perspective and remind us of His power. King Hezekiah did just that after receiving a daunting letter from an ominous adversary. The Assyrians threatened to destroy Jerusalem as they had many other nations. Hezekiah spread out the letter before the Lord, prayerfully calling on Him to deliver the people so that the world would recognize He “alone . . . [is] God” (2 KINGS 19:19).

When we’re faced with a situation that brings anxiety, fear, or a deep awareness that getting through it will require more than what we have, let’s follow in Hezekiah’s footsteps and run straight to the Lord. Like him, we, too, can lay our problem before God and trust Him to guide our steps and calm our uneasy hearts. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

작은 낙원

서재에서 열린 창밖을 바라보면 새들의 지저귀는 소리가 들리고, 바람 소리와 함께 나무 사이로 살랑대는 바람이 보입니다. 이웃의 새로 경작된 밭에 가지런히 묶여 있는 짚 더미와 커다랗고 새하얀 뭉게구름이 눈부시게 파란 하늘에 대조해 아름답게 드러나 보입니다.

나는 지금 하나의 작은 낙원을 즐기고 있습니다. 집 앞을 지나는 자동차들의 그칠줄 모르는 소음과 가벼운 허리 통증만 없다면 말입니다. 한때는 이 세상이 완전히 좋은 곳이었기 때문에 ‘낙원’이라는 말을 쉽게 쓰고 있지만, 이젠 더 이상 그런 곳이 아닙니다. 인간이 죄를 지었을 때 에덴동산에서 쫓겨났고 땅은 ‘저주’를 받았습니다(창세기 3장 참조). 그때부터 이 땅과 이곳에 있는 모든 것들은 ‘쇠락의 굴레’에 놓이게 되었습니다. 고통과 질병과 우리의 죽음은 모두 다 인간이 죄에 빠진 결과입니다(로마서 8:18-23).

그러나 하나님은 만물을 새롭게 하십니다. 때가 되면 하나님의 처소가 회복되어 새로워진 모습으로 주의 백성 가운데 있게 될 것입니다. 그곳은 “사망이 없고 애통하는 것이나 곡하는 것이나 아픈 것이 다시 있지 아니하고 처음 것들이 다 지나간”(요한계시록 21:1-4) “새 하늘과 새 땅” 입니다. 그날이 올 때까지 우리는 아름다운 장면들과 때로는 넓게 펼쳐진 세상의 숨 막히는 장관을 보고 즐거워할 수 있습니다. 이는 다가올 “낙원”을 조금이나마 미리 맛보는 것입니다.

A Little Bit of Paradise

Gazing out my open study window, I hear birds chirping and hear and see the wind gently blowing in the trees. Bales of hay dot my neighbor’s newly tilled field, and large, white cumulus clouds stand out in contrast to the brilliant blue sky.

I’m enjoying a little bit of paradise—except for the almost incessant noise of the traffic that runs past our property and the slight ache in my back. I use the word paradise lightly because though our world was once completely good, it no longer is. When humanity sinned, we were expelled from the garden of Eden and the ground was “cursed” (SEE GEN. 3). Since then the Earth and everything in it has been in “bondage to decay.” Suffering, disease, and our deaths are all a result of human-kind’s fall into sin (ROM. 8:18–23).

Yet God is making everything new. One day His dwelling place will be among His people in a renewed and restored creation—“a new heaven and a new earth”—where “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (REV. 21:1–4). Until that day we can enjoy the bright splashes and sometimes wide expanses of breathtaking beauty we see around us in this world, which is just a small foretaste of the “paradise” that will be. - ALYSON KIEDA

능력으로 나아가는 발걸음

“뱀이 나오지 않을까요?”

이웃집 아이 앨런과 함께 집 근처의 강가를 걸으려 할 때 그가 물었습니다.

나는 “한 번도 뱀을 본 적은 없지만 정말 그럴 수도 있겠네. 하나님께 안전히 지켜달라고 기도하자.”라고 말하고는 잠시 서서 함께 기도한 후 계속 걸었습니다.

몇 분이 지난 후 아내 캐리가 갑자기 뒤로 물러서며 앞에 똬리를 틀고 있는 독사를 가까스로 피했습니다. 우리는 거리를 두고 독사가 길에서 사라질 때까지 기다렸습니다. 그리고 우리가 무사한 것에 안도하며 하나님께 감사드렸습니다. 나는 하나님께서 앨런의 질문을 통해 뱀이 나올 것에 대비하게 하신 것과 우리의 기도에 응답하여 보살피셨다는 것을 믿어 의심치 않습니다.

그날 저녁 위험했던 순간을 겪고나니, “여호와와 그의 능력을 구할지어다 항상 그의 얼굴을 찾을지어다”(역대상 16:11)라고 한 다윗의 말이 중요하게 느껴집니다. 이 말씀은 여호와의 언약궤가 예루살렘으로 돌아온 것을 찬양하는 시편의 한 구절이기도 합니다. 이 말씀은 이스라엘의 고난의 역사 가운데 그의 백성들을 향한 하나님의 신실하심을 알려주며, 하나님을 늘 찬양하고 하나님께 “부르짖을” 것을 일깨워주고 있습니다(35절).

“[하나님의] 얼굴을 찾으라”는 것이 무슨 뜻일까요? 그것은 별일 없는 아주 일상적인 순간에도 우리의 마음을 하나님께로 향하라는 뜻입니다. 때로 우리의 기도가 구한 것과는 다르게 응답될 수도 있지만, 하나님은 어떤 경우에도 신실하신 분이십니다. 선한 목자 되시는 주님께서 우리를 인도하시고 그분의 자비와 능력과 사랑으로 돌보아주십니다. 우리 모두 하나님을 의지한다고 고백할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Stepping into Strength

“Will we see any snakes?”

Allan, a young boy in our neighborhood, asked that question as we started on a hike by the river near our home.

“We never have before,” I answered, “but we might! So let’s ask God to keep us safe.” We paused, prayed together, and kept walking.

Several minutes later my wife, Cari, suddenly took a quick step backward, narrowly avoiding a poisonous copperhead partially coiled on the path ahead. We waited as the snake left the trail, giving it a wide berth. Then we paused and thanked God nothing had happened. I believe that through Allan’s question, God had prepared us for the encounter, and our prayer was part of His providential care.

Our brush with danger that evening brings to mind the importance of David’s words: “Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always” (1 CHRON. 16:11). This advice was part of a psalm celebrating the return of the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. It recounts God’s faithfulness to His people in their struggles throughout history, reminding them to always praise Him and “cry out” to Him (V. 35).

What does it mean to “seek [God’s] face”? It means we turn our hearts toward Him in even the most mundane moments. Sometimes our prayers are answered differently than our asking, but God is faithful come what may. Our Good Shepherd will direct our paths and keeps us in His mercy, strength, and love. 값을 매길 수 없는 예배

나는 하나님을 경배하고 섬기기 위해 글을 쓰는데, 요즘은 건강 문제로 자주 거동이 불편하여 더 그렇게 합니다. 그런데 어떤 아는 사람이 내 글에 읽을 것이 별로 없다는 말을 하는 것을 듣고는 낙심이 되어, 하나님께 드리는 나의 이 작은 예물이 가치가 있는 것인지 의심이 되었습니다.

하지만 기도와 성경공부, 그리고 남편, 가족, 친구들의 격려를 통해, 주님은 다른 사람들의 의견이 아닌 오직 주님만이 예배드리는 우리의 동기와 주님께 드리는 예물의 가치를 결정하신다는 확신을 주셨습니다. 나는 모든 은사를 주신 주님께, 나의 기술을 개발하여 주님께서 주시는 모든 자원을 나눌 기회들을 달라고 간구하였습니다.

예수님은 우리가 드리는 것에 관한 가치 기준을 바꾸어놓으셨습니다(마가복음 12:41-44). 부자가 많은 돈을 성전 금고에 던져 넣을 때, 가난한 과부는 “단지 몇 전 가치 밖에 안 되는” 동전을 넣었습니다(42절). 과부의 헌금이 다른 사람들에 비해 하찮아 보여도(44절) 주님은 그녀의 예물이 다른 모든 것보다 더 크다고 말씀하셨습니다(43절).

과부의 이야기는 헌금에 초점이 맞추어져 있지만, 우리가 하나님께 드리는 모든 행위가 다 경배와 사랑에 의한 순종의 표현일 수 있습니다. 우리가 하나님으로부터 이미 받은 것이 무엇이든지, 그것으로부터 정성어리고 넉넉하고 희생적인 예물을 드림으로써 그 과부처럼 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 수 있습니다. 우리가 사랑하는 마음으로 우리의 시간이나 재능이나 재물을 아낌없이 하나님께 드릴 때, 우리는 ‘값을 매길 수 없는 예배’라는 예물을 하나님께 아낌없이 드리는 것입니다.

Priceless Worship

I use writing to worship and serve God, even more so now that health issues often limit my mobility. So, when an acquaintance said he found no value in what I wrote, I became discouraged. I doubted the significance of my small offerings to God.

Through prayer, study of Scripture, and encouragement from my husband, family, and friends, the Lord affirmed that only He—not the opinions of other people—could determine our motives as a worshiper and the worth of our offerings to Him. I asked the Giver of all gifts to continue helping me develop skills and provide opportunities to share the resources He gives me.

Jesus contradicted our standards of merit regarding our giving (MARK 12:41–44). While the rich tossed large amounts of money into the temple treasury, a poor widow put in coins “worth only a few cents” (V. 42). The Lord declared her gift greater than the rest (V. 43), though her contribution seemed insignificant to those around her (V. 44).

Although the widow’s story focuses on financial offerings, every act of giving can be an expression of worship and loving obedience. Like the widow, we honor God with intentional, generous, and sacrificial gifts given from whatever He’s already given us. When we present God the best of our time, talents, or treasure with hearts motivated by love, we are lavishing Him with offerings of priceless worship. - XOCHITL DIXON

혼자 달리지 말라

우리 남편 잭이 경주의 26마일 코스 중 25마일 지점에 이르렀을때 힘이 다 빠져버렸습니다.

그것은 그의 생애 첫 마라톤이었는데, 남편 혼자 달리고 있었습니다. 급수대에서 물을 마시려고 잠시 멈춘 그는 매우 지쳐서 코스 옆 잔디 위에 앉았습니다. 그런데 몇 분이 지나도 일어설 수가 없었습니다. 그만 경주를 포기하려고
하는데 켄터키에서 온 중년 교사 두 명이 다가왔습니다. 모르는 사람들이었지만 그들은 잭의 상태를 알아보고 자기들과 함께 뛰지 않겠냐고 물었습니다. 잭은 갑자기 체력이 회복되는 것을 느끼고는, 일어나 두 여성과 함께 뛰어 경주를 마쳤습니다.

잭을 격려했던 두 여성은 아주 중요한 순간에 이스라엘 백성의 지도자 모세를 도왔던 두 친구 아론과 훌을 생각나게 합니다 (출애굽기 17:8-13). 이스라엘 백성들이 공격을 받고 있었는데, 모세가 그의 지팡이를 들고 있는 동안에만 전투에서 이겼습니다(11절). 그래서 아론과 훌은 모세의 체력이 소진했을 때 그의 양쪽에 서서 해가 지기까지 그의 팔을 들어주었습니다(12절).

하나님을 따르는 것은 혼자만의 노력으로 되지 않습니다. 하나님은 우리가 삶의 경주를 홀로 달리도록 창조하지 않으셨습니다. 우리가 하나님의 일을 하며 겪는 어려움을 견뎌내도록 동역자들이 도와줄 수 있습니다.

Don’t Run Alone

My husband Jack was on mile 25 out of 26 when his strength failed him.

This was his first marathon, and he was running alone. After stopping for a drink of water at an aid station, he felt exhausted and sat down on the grass beside the course. Minutes passed, and he couldn’t get up. He had resigned himself to quitting the race when two middle-aged school-teachers from Kentucky came by. Although they were strangers, they noticed Jack and asked if he wanted to run with them. Suddenly, he found his strength restored. Jack stood and accompanied by the two women he finished the race.

Those women who encouraged Jack remind me of Aaron and Hur, two friends who helped Moses, the leader of the Israelites, at a key point (EX. 17:8–13). The Israelites were under attack. In battle, they were winning only as long as Moses held his staff up (V. 11). So when Moses’s strength began to fail, Aaron and Hur stood on either side of him, holding up his arms for him until sunset (V. 12).

Following God is not a solo endeavor. He did not create us to run the race of life alone. Companions can help us persevere through difficulty as we do what God has called us to do. - AMY PETERSON
