성장하는데 시간이 필요하다
유치원에 간 첫날, 선생님은 어린 샬롯에게 자신을 그려보라고 했습니다. 그 아이가 그린 것은 단순히 동그란 몸통에 타원형의 머리와 동그란 두 눈이었습니다. 유치원의 마지막 날, 샬롯은 다시 자신의 초상화를 그리게 되었습니다. 이번에 그린 것은 화려한 드레스를 입고, 이목구비가 뚜렷한 얼굴에 미소를 띠고 있는, 붉고 아름다운 긴 머리를 풍성하게 늘어뜨린 작은 소녀였습니다. 유치원은 이런 단순한 과제를 이용해 시간이 지나며 성숙해가는 과정에서 나타나는 변화를 보여준 것입니다.
아이들이 성숙해 가는데 시간이 필요하다는 것을 인정하면서도, 우리는 우리 자신이나 신앙의 동료들이 영적으로 더디게 자라는 모습을 보면 참지 못할 때가 있습니다. 우리는 “성령의 열매”(갈라디아서 5:22-23)를 보면 기뻐하지만, 죄를 짓는 모습을 보면 낙담합니다. 히브리서 기자는 교회에 보내는 그의 서신 속에서 이런 모습에 대해 말했습니다. “때가 오래 되었으므로 너희가 마땅히 선생이 되었을 터인데 너희가 다시 하나님의 말씀의 초보에 대하여 누구에게서 가르침을 받아야 할 처지이니”(히브리서 5:12).
우리 스스로 예수님과 친밀해지기를 계속 힘쓰면서, 서로를 위해 기도하고, 하나님을 사랑하지만 영적 성장에 어려움을 겪는 이들을 인내하며 함께 나아갑시다. 우리가 같이 “모든 면에서 자라나서, 머리가 되신 그리스도에게까지 다다르도록” “사랑으로 진리를 말하고 살면서” 서로를 격려하는 일을 계속합시다(에베소서 4:15, 새번역).

It Takes Time to Grow
On her first day in preschool, young Charlotte was asked to draw a picture of herself. Her artwork featured a simple orb for a body, an oblong head, and two circle eyes. On her last day of preschool, Charlotte was again directed to draw a self-portrait. This one showed a little girl in a colorful dress, a smiling face with distinct features, and a cascade of beautiful red tresses. The school had used a simple assignment to demonstrate the difference that time can make in the level of maturity.
While we accept that it takes time for children to mature, we may grow impatient with ourselves or fellow believers who show slow spiritual growth. We rejoice when we see the “fruit of the Spirit” (GAL. 5:22–23), but are disheartened when we observe a sinful choice. The author of Hebrews spoke of this when he wrote to the church: “Though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again” (HEB. 5:12).
As we continue to pursue intimacy with Jesus ourselves, let’s pray for each other and patiently come alongside those who love God but who seem to struggle with spiritual growth. “Speaking the truth in love,” let’s continue to encourage one another, so that together we may “grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ” (EPH. 4:15). - CINDY HESS KASPER

새 것: 안과 밖
몇 년 전에 한 출판사가 큰 실수를 저질렀습니다. 시중에 몇 년째 시판되고 있던 책을 이제 새롭게 개정할 때가 되어, 저자가 그 책을 시대에 맞게 다시 썼습니다. 그러나 그 개정판이 출판되자 문제가 생겼습니다. 출판사가 책의 겉표지는 멋있게 만들었지만, 안에는 옛날 책을 그대로 인쇄한 것입니다.
겉은 아주 신선하고 새로웠지만 안은 시대에 뒤진 오래된 것이었습니다. 이 “개정판”은 실제로는 전혀 새것이 아니었습니다.
때때로 사람들에게도 그런 일이 일어납니다. 그들은 삶에 새로운 변화가 있어야 한다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 일이 잘못된 방향으로 진행되고 있습니다. 그래서 근본적인 마음의 변화 없이 겉모습만 새롭게 바꿉니다. 사람들은 그들이 겉으로 나타나는 행동은 바꿀 수 있을지 몰라도 오직 하나님만이 사람의 내면을 바꿀 수 있다는 것을 깨닫지 못합니다.
요한복음 3장에서 니고데모는 예수님이 “하나님으로부터” 오셨다(2절)는 것을 알았습니다. 예수님은 그에게 아주 특이한 것을 말씀하셨는데, 니고데모는 예수님의 말씀을 단순히 다시 태어나는 것으로만 이해했습니다(4절). 그는 온전히 새롭게 되기 위해서 “거듭나야” 했습니다(7절).
그같은 변화는 오직 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 통해서만 가능합니다. 그 때에 “이전 것은 지나가고 새것이 되는”(고린도후서 5:17) 것입니다. 변화가 필요하십니까? 예수님을 믿으십시오. 그분은 당신의 마음을 변화시키고 모든 것을 새롭게 만드는 분이십니다.
사람이 거듭나지 아니하면 하나님의 나라를 볼 수 없느니라

New: Inside and Out
A few years ago a publisher made a big mistake. A book had been on the market for several years, so it was time for a makeover. The author rewrote the book to bring it up to date. But when the revision was published, there was a problem. The publisher gave the book a nice new cover but printed the old book inside.
The exterior was fresh and new, but the interior was old and out of date. This “reprint” was not really new at all.
Sometimes that kind of thing happens with people. They realize a change needs to be made in life. Things are heading in the wrong direction. So they may put on a new exterior without making a vital change in their heart. They may change a behavior on the outside but may not realize that it is only God who can change us on the inside.
In John 3, Nicodemus sensed that because Jesus came “from God” (V. 2). He offered something very different. What Jesus told Nicodemus made him realize that He offered nothing short of a rebirth (V. 4): He needed to be “born again,” to be made totally new (V. 7).
That change comes only through faith in Jesus Christ. That’s when “the old has gone, the new is here” (2 COR. 5:17). Do you need a change? Put your faith in Jesus. He’s the one who changes your heart and makes all things new. - DAVE BRANON

신선한 믿음
우리 아들이 헤로인 중독에 빠졌을 때 당신이 만약 나에게 언젠가 하나님께서 우리가 겪는 이런 경험을 우리와 똑같은 어려움을 겪는 가족들을 격려하는데 사용하실 것이라고 말했다면, 나는 그 말을 믿지 못했을 것입니다. 물론 하나님은 어려운 상황에서 좋은 것을 끄집어내는 방법을 가지고 계시지만, 당신이 그런 어려운 상황을 통과하는 동안에는 그것을 알기가 언제나 쉽지는 않습니다.
도마 사도 역시 하나님께서 그의 믿음의 가장 큰 도전이었던 예수님의 십자가 사건으로부터 좋은 것을 가져오시리라는 것을 기대하지 못했습니다. 예수님이 부활하신 후에 제자들을 찾아오셨을 때 도마는 그들과 한 자리에 있지 않았습니다. 그래서 슬픔에 가득 찬 그는 “내가 그의 손의 못 자국을 보며 내 손가락을 그 못 자국에 넣어 보지 않고는......믿지 아니하겠노라”(요한복음 20:25)고 하였습니다. 그러나 후에 예수님이 모든 제자 앞에 나타나셨을 때, 의심으로 가득찼던 도마는 성령으로 인해 놀라운 믿음의 고백을 하게 되었습니다. 도마가 “나의 주님이시요 나의 하나님이시니이다”(28절)라고 고백할때, 그는 육신을 입으신 하나님이신 예수님이 자기 앞에 서 계시다는 진리를 깨달 것입니다. 그것은 후세에 걸쳐 믿는 자들에게 용기와 영감을 주는 담대한 믿음의 고백이 되었습니다.
우리 하나님은 우리가 믿음을 기대하기 가장 힘든 때에도 우리 마음에 신선한 믿음을 불러일으키십니다. 우리는 주님의 신실하심을 언제나 기대할 수 있습니다. 주님께 너무 어려운 일이란 아무것도 없습니다!

Fresh Faith
When our son was struggling with heroin addiction, if you had told me God would one day use our experience to encourage other families who face these kinds of battles, I would have had trouble believing it. God has a way of bringing good out of difficult circumstances that isn’t always easy to see when you are going through them.
The apostle Thomas also didn’t expect God to bring good out of the greatest challenge of his faith—Jesus’s crucifixion. Thomas wasn’t with the other disciples when Jesus came to them after the resurrection, and in his deep grief he insisted, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were . . . I will not believe” (JOHN 20:25). But later, when Jesus appeared to all the disciples together, out of the dust of Thomas’s doubts God’s Spirit would inspire a striking statement of faith. When Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!” (V. 28), he was grasping the truth that Jesus was actually God in the flesh, standing right in front of him. It was a bold confession of faith that would encourage and inspire believers in every century that followed.
Our God is able to inspire fresh faith in our hearts, even in moments when we least expect it. We can always look forward to His faithfulness. Nothing is too hard for Him! - JAMES BANKS

기도할 수 없었던 날
2015년 11월, 나는 심장 절개 수술을 받아야 한다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 놀라고 약간 불안하기도 하여 자연스럽게 죽음의 가능성에 대해 생각하게 되었습니다. 내가 회복해야 할 관계들이 있는가? 가족을 위해 처리해야 할 재정적 문제가 있는가? 미리 해놓을 수 있는 일이 있는가? 그리고 급한 일은 어떻게 하나? 누구에게 그 일을 맡겨야 하나? 그 때는 내가 행동과 기도를 동시에 해야 할 때였습니다.
‘하지만 나는 둘 중 아무것도 할 수 없었습니다.’
몸은 너무 지치고 마음은 너무 피곤하여 아주 간단한 일조차도 힘에 부쳤습니다. 어쩌면 무엇보다 놀라웠던 것은 기도하려고 해도 생각이 맴돌다 불안해지거나, 손상된 심장으로 인해 얕은 숨을 몰아쉬다가 잠이 들곤 하는 것이었습니다. 참으로 답답했습니다. 나는 일할 수도 없었고 가족과 더 많은 시간을 보낼 수 있도록 나를 살려달라고 하나님께 기도할 수도 없었습니다!
나는 기도할 수 없다는 사실이 무엇보다 괴로웠습니다. 그러나 인간의 모든 필요를 아시는 창조주께서는 나의 이런 형편을 알고 계셨습니다. 마침내 나는 주님께서 그런 경우를 대비하여 두 가지를 준비해두셨다는 것을 기억해냈습니다. 그것은 우리가 기도할 수 없을 때 성령께서 우리를 위해 기도해주신다는 것과(로마서 8:26), 우리를 위해 다른 사람들이 기도해준다는 것이었습니다(야고보서 5:16; 갈라디아서 6:2).
성령께서 하나님 아버지 앞에 나의 염려를 올려주신다는 것을 알게 되니 얼마나 위안이 되었는지 모릅니다. 또한 친구와 가족들로부터 그들이 나를 위해 기도한다는 말을 들었을 때 얼마나 큰 선물이었는지요. 그러고 나서 나는 놀라운 사실을 하나 더 깨달았습니다. 친구와 가족들이 나에게 무엇을 위해 기도해주기를 원하는지 물었을 때 내가 말해준 그 대답을 하나님께서도 기도로 들으신다는 것이 분명해졌습니다. 우리가 하나님을 부를 수 없다고 생각할 때에도 하나님께서 우리 마음의 기도를 들으신다는 것을 알게 되니, 이 불확실한 때에 얼마나 큰 선물이 되는지요.

The Day I Couldn’t Pray
In November 2015, I learned I needed open-heart surgery. Surprised and a little shaken, I was naturally drawn to think about the possibility of death. Were there relationships I needed to mend? Were there financial matters I needed to attend to for my family? Was there work that could be done ahead of time? And what about work that couldn’t wait; who should I hand that off to? It was a time to both act and pray.
Except I couldn’t do either .
My body was so weary and my mind so fatigued that even the simplest of tasks seemed beyond my strength. Perhaps most surprising, when I tried to pray, my thoughts would drift to the discomfort, or the shallow breathing caused by the damaged heart made me fall asleep. It was frustrating. The inability to pray troubled me most. But as with all other human needs, the Creator knew this was happening to me. I would eventually recall He made two preparations for such occurrences: the prayer of the Spirit for us when we can’t pray (ROM. 8:26), and the prayer of others on our behalf (JAMES 5:16; GAL. 6:2).
What a comfort it was to know that the Holy Spirit was even then raising my concerns before the Father. What a gift also to hear from friends and family as they prayed for me. Then came another surprise: As my friends and family asked me what to pray for, it became clear that my answers to them were also being heard by God as prayers. My body was so weary and my mind so fatigued that even the simplest of tasks seemed beyond my strength. Perhaps most surprising, when I tried to pray, my thoughts would drift to the discomfort, or the shallow breathing caused by the damaged heart made me fall asleep. It was frustrating. I couldn’t work and I couldn’t even ask God to let me live so I could spend more time with my family!

날씨에 맞는 옷
전에 샀던 겨울옷에서 가격표를 떼면서 그 뒷면에 적힌 글을 읽고는 웃음이 났습니다. “경고: 이 혁신적인 제품은 당신을 야외로 내보내 그곳에 머무르고 싶게 할 것입니다.” 날씨에 맞게 옷을 입은 사람은 변덕스럽고 혹독한 날씨를 견딜 수 있을 뿐 아니라 날씨를 즐길 수도 있습니다.
우리의 영적인 삶에도 똑같은 원리가 적용됩니다. 예수님을 따르는 우리들의 전천후 영적 옷차림이 어떠해야 하는지에 대해 주님은 그분의 말씀인 성경에서 설명해주셨습니다. “그러므로 너희는 하나님이 택하사 거룩하고 사랑 받는 자처럼 긍휼과 자비와 겸손과 온유와 오래 참음을 ‘옷 입고’......용서하되 주께서 너희를 용서하신 것 같이 너희도 그리하고”(골로새서 3:12-13 ).
자비와 겸손과 온유와 같은 하나님이 주신 의복은 적대감과 비판을 인내와 용서와 사랑으로 넘어갈 수 있게 해줍니다. 이 옷들은 삶의 폭풍우 속에서 우리에게 견딜 힘을 줍니다.
우리가 가정, 학교 또는 직장에서 어려운 상황을 만날 때 하나님이 우리에게 입으라고 하신 “옷”을 입으면 보호가 되고 긍정적인 변화를 만들 수 있게 됩니다. “이 모든 것 위에 사랑을 더하라 이는 온전하게 매는 띠니라”(14절).

Clothes for the Climate
While removing the price tag from an item of winter clothing I had purchased, I smiled at these words on the back: “WARNING: This innovative product will make you want to go outdoors and stay there.” When properly clothed for the climate, a person can survive and even thrive in harsh and changing weather conditions.
The same principle is true in our spiritual lives. As followers of Jesus, our all-weather spiritual wardrobe has been prescribed by the Lord in His Word, the Bible. “As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. . . . Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (COL. 3:12–13 EMPHASIS ADDED).
These garments that God provides—such as kindness, humility, and gentleness—allow us to meet hostility and criticism with patience, forgiveness, and love. They give us staying power in the storms of life.
When we face adverse conditions at home, school, or work, the “clothing” God tells us to wear protects us and enables us to make a positive difference. “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity” (V. 14).
Dressing according to God’s guidelines doesn’t change the weather—it equips the wearer. - DAVID MCCASLAND

공허에서 충만으로
한 유명한 동화책을 보면 자신의 모자를 벗어 왕에게 경의를 표했던 어떤 시골 소년의 이야기가 나옵니다. 그런데 소년이 모자를 벗자마자 바로 똑같은 모자가 그 소년의 머리 위에 나타났고, 그것을 무례하다고 본 왕은 화가 났습니다. 바돌로매는 처벌을 받으러 궁전으로 끌려가는 동안 모자를 벗고 또 벗었습니다. 모자 하나를 벗을 때마다 새로운 모자가 그의 머리 위에 나타났습니다. 매번 나타나는 새 모자는 점점 더 귀한 보석과 깃털로 화려함을 더해갔습니다. 더윈 왕은 500번째 모자를 부러워하여 바돌로매를 사면하고 그에게 금 500개를 주고 그 모자를 샀습니다. 마침내 바돌로매는 머리가 홀가분해지고 자유의 몸이 되어 가족을 부양할 수 있는 돈까지 가지고 집으로 돌아갔습니다.
매우 가난했던 한 과부는 자신의 빚 때문에 아이들이 노예로 팔려갈까 두려워하며 엘리사를 찾아왔습니다(열왕기하 4장). 그녀에게는 기름 한 병 외에는 가진 것이 없었습니다. 하나님은 그 기름을 가지고 빌려온 그릇들을 가득 채울 정도로 넘치게 해주셔서, 과부는 자신의 빚을 청산하고 또 남는 기름으로 매일의 필요를 채울 수 있었습니다(7절).
하나님이 그 과부를 경제적으로 도우신 것처럼 나에게도 구원을 베풀어주셨습니다. 나는 죄로 인해 파산했지만 예수님이 내 빚을 갚아주시고 영생도 주셨습니다! 예수님이 없으면 우리는 왕께 죄를 짓고도 속죄할 방법이 없었던 그

From Empty to Full
A popular children’s book tells the story of a poor, country boy who took off his cap to honor the king. An identical hat appeared instantly in its place on his head, inciting the king’s anger for what appeared to be disrespect. Bartholomew removed hat after hat while being escorted to the palace for punishment. Each time, a new one appeared in its place. The hats grew increasingly fancy, bearing precious jewels and feather plumes. The 500th hat was the envy of King Derwin, who pardoned Bartholomew and purchased the hat for 500 pieces of gold. At last, Bartholomew’s head was bare; he walked home with freedom and money to support his family.
A widow came to Elisha in financial distress, fearing her children would be sold into slavery to pay her debts (2 KINGS 4). She had no assets other than a jar of oil. God multiplied that oil to fill enough borrowed jars to settle the debts plus care for their daily needs (V. 7).
God provided financially for the widow in much the same way He provides salvation for me. I am bankrupted by sin, but Jesus paid my debt—and offers me eternal life as well! Without Jesus, we are each like the poor, country boy with no means to pay our King for our offenses against Him. 조카딸이 보스턴 대학교의 대학원에 진학하기 위해 매사추세츠 주로 이사 가기 전날 밤, 작별인사를 하며 나는 목이 메었습니다. 학부 때에도 4년이나 떨어져 있었지만, 그때는 같은 주에 있어서 두 시간 반 정도 운전하면 금방 다시 만날 수 있었습니다. 이제 800 마일 이상 떨어져서, 우리는 더 이상 정기적으로 만나 이야기를 나눌 수 없게 되었습니다. 하나님께서 그녀를 돌보아주실 것을 믿어야 했습니다.
바울도 에베소 교회의 장로들과 작별인사를 할 때 아마 같은 심정이었을 것입니다. 교회를 세우고 삼년 동안 가르치면서, 바울은 그들과 마치 가족처럼 가까워졌습니다. 이 제 예루살렘으로 올라가면 바울은 그들을 다시는 못 보게 될 것이었습니다.

Apart but Not Abandoned
I had a lump in my throat as I said good-bye to my niece on the eve of her move to Massachusetts to attend graduate school at Boston University. Though she had been away four years as an undergraduate, she hadn’t left our state. A two and a one-half-hour drive easily reunited us. Now she would be more than 800 miles away. No longer would we meet regularly to talk. I had to trust that God would take care of her.
Paul likely felt the same way as he said good-bye to the elders of the church in Ephesus. Having established the church and taught them for three years, Paul concluded these elders to be as close as family to him. Now that Paul was headed to Jerusalem, he would not see them again.
But Paul had parting advice for the Ephesians. Though they would no longer have Paul as their teacher, the Ephesians did not have to feel abandoned. God would continue to train them through “the word of his grace” (ACTS 20:32) to lead the church. Unlike Paul, God would always be with them.
Whether it’s children we launch from the nest or other family and friends who move away—saying good-bye can be very difficult. They move beyond our influence and into their new lives. When we let go of their hands, we can trust that God has them in His. He can continue to shape their lives and meet their real needs—more than we ever could. - LINDA WASHINGTON

나는 아름다운 호수가 많은 미네소타 주에서 자라면서 캠핑을 가서 하나님이 창조하신 멋진 자연을 즐기는 것을 아주 좋아했습니다. 하지만 얄팍한 텐트 안에서 자는 것은 별로 내키지 않았습니다. 특히 비가 오는 밤에 텐트에 물이 새어들어 침낭이 축축해지면 더욱 그랬습니다.
우리의 믿음의 영웅들 중 하나는 백 년 동안이나 텐트에서 지냈다는 것을 생각하면 참 경이롭습니다. 아브라함이 75세가 되었을 때 하나님은 아브라함으로 새로운 민족을 이루게 하시려고 그를 자신의 고향에서 불러내셨습니 (창세기 12:1-2). 아브라함은 하나님께서 언약을 지키실 것을 믿었고 그 말씀에 순종했습니다. 그리고 175세에 죽기까지(25:7) 그는 일생동안 고향을 떠나 장막에서 지냈습니다.
우리는 아브라함처럼 유랑하며 살라는 소명은 받지 않았을지 모릅니다. 그리고 이 세상과 이곳에 사는 사람들을 사랑하고 섬기면서 우리는 고향을, 여기 이 땅에 기반을 둔 삶을 더 깊이 체험하고 싶을지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만 아브라함처럼, 바람이 불어 허술한 장막이 펄럭이고 그 안으로 비가 새어들 때 우리는 다가올 도성, “하나님이 계획하시고 지으실 성”(히브리서 11:10)을 믿음으로 바라볼 수 있습니다. 또 아브라함과 같이 우리는 하나님께서 이 창조 세계를 새롭게 하시기 위해 일하고 계시고, 다가올 “하늘에 있는 더 나은 본향”(16절) 을 준비하고 계신다는 소망을 발견할 수 있습니다.

Living in Tents
Growing up in Minnesota, a place known for its many beautiful lakes, I loved to go camping to enjoy the wonders of God’s creation. But sleeping in a flimsy tent wasn’t my favorite part of the experience—especially when a rainy night and a leaky tent resulted in a soggy sleeping bag.
I marvel to think that one of the heroes of our faith spent a hundred years in tents. When he was seventy-five years old, Abraham heard God’s call to leave his country so the Lord could make him into a new nation (GEN. 12:1–2). We may not have the same call as Abraham did to live nomadically, but even as we love and serve this world and the people in it, we may long for a deeper experience of home, of being rooted here on earth. Like Abraham, when the wind whips our flimsy covering or the rain soaks through, we can look with faith for the city to come, whose “architect and builder is God” (HEB. 11:10). I marvel to think that one of the heroes of our faith spent a hundred years in tents. When he was seventy-five years old, Abraham heard God’s call to leave his country so the Lord could make him into a new nation (GEN. 12:1–2). Abraham obeyed, trusting that God would follow through on His promise. And for the rest of his life, until he died at 175 (25:7), he lived away from his home country in tents.

시몬의 대답
레퓨지 라빈드라나스라고 하는 남자는 10년 넘게 스리랑카에서 청소년 사역을 담당하고 있습니다. 그는 자주 밤늦게까지 아이들과 함께하며 놀이를 하고 아이들의 말을 들어주고 상담도 하고 가르치기도 합니다. 그는 청소년들과 같이 일하는 것이 즐겁지만 때로 유망한 학생들이 믿음을 떠나는 것을 볼 때면 낙심하기도 합니다. 어떤 날은 누가복음 5장에 나오는 시몬 베드로와 같은 느낌이 들기도 합니다.
시몬은 밤새도록 수고했지만 고기 한 마리 잡지 못해(5절) 낙심되고 피곤했습니다. 하지만 예수님이 “깊은 데로 가서 그물을 내려 고기를 잡으라”(4절)고 말씀하시자 시몬은 “말씀에 의지하여 내가 그물을 내리리이다”(5절)라고 대답했습니다.
시몬의 순종은 주목할 만합니다. 경험 많은 어부인 그는 해가 뜰 때 고기들이 호수 바닥 쪽으로 옮겨간다는 것과 그들이 사용하는 저인망으로는 그 물고기들을 잡을 수 있을 만큼 깊이 그물을 내릴 수 없다는 사실을 알고 있었습니다.
시몬이 기꺼이 예수님을 신뢰했을 때 보상이 뒤따라 왔습니다. 많은 물고기를 잡았을 뿐 아니라 예수님이 누구인지를 더 깊이 깨닫게 된 것입니다. 예수님을 부르는 호칭이 “선생님”(5절)에서 “주여”(8절)로 바뀌었습니다. 실제로 “들음”은 우리들로 먼저 하나님의 역사를 보게 하고, 이어서 하나님께로 더 가까이 이끌어줍니다.
어쩌면 하나님이 당신에게도 “그물을 다시 내려라”라고 요구하고 계시는지도 모르겠습니다. 시몬이 순종했던 것처럼 “말씀에 의지하여 내가 그렇게 하겠습니다.”라고 주님께 대답하는 우리가 되기를 소원합니다.

하나님께 순종하는 삶은 미지의 인생길에 우리의 안내자가 되어주고, 우리를 하나님 곁으로 더 가까이 이끌어준다.

What Simon Said
A man named Refuge Rabindranath has been a youth worker in Sri Lanka for more than ten years. He often interacts with the youth late into the night—playing with them, listening to them, counseling and teaching them. He enjoys working with the young people, but it can be disheartening when promising students sometimes walk away from the faith. Some days he feels a bit like Simon Peter in Luke 5.
Simon had been working hard all night but caught no fish (V. 5). He felt discouraged and tired. Yet when Jesus told him to “put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch” (V. 4), Simon replied, “Because you say so, I will let down the nets” (V. 5).
Simon’s obedience is remarkable. As a seasoned fisherman, he knew that fish move to the bottom of the lake when the sun is up, and the dragnets they used could not go deep enough to catch those fish.
His willingness to trust Jesus was rewarded. Not only did Simon catch a large number of fish, he gained a deeper understanding of who Jesus is. He moved from calling Jesus “Master” (V. 5) to calling Him “Lord” (V. 8). Indeed, “listening” often allows us to see the works of God firsthand and draw closer to Him.
Perhaps God is calling you to “let down your nets again.” May we reply to the Lord as Simon did: “Because You say so, I will.” - POH FANG CHIA

나는 웃으며 그 레몬 조각을 쓰레기통에 버리려고 손을 내밀어 잡으려고 하였습니다.
그러자 재비어는 “안 돼!”라고 외치며 부엌을 가로질러 잽싸게 도망쳤습니다. “더!” 아이가 입술을 오물거리며 베어 먹을 때마다 레몬주스가 터져 나왔습니다. 내가 질겁하자, 마침내 아이가 내게 그 레몬 껍질을 건네주고 갔습니다.
나의 미각은 인생의 달콤한 시간들만을 편애하는 내 모습을 정확히 보여줍니다. 쓴맛 나는 것은 모두 회피하는 나의 취향은 고통의 신맛을 혐오하는 나와 비슷한 욥의 부인을 떠올려줍니다.
욥은 분명히 환란과 고통을 즐거워하지 않았습니다. 그러나 욥은 가슴이 미어지는 상황 속에서도 하나님께 영광을 돌렸습니다(욥기 1:1-22). 고통스러운 상처가 몸을 괴롭게 할 때에도 욥은 그 고통을 견뎌냈습니다(2:7-8). 그의 아내는 그에게 하나님을 그만 포기하라고 말했지만(9절), 욥은 고통과 괴로움 가운데에서도 주님을 신뢰했습니다 (10절).
인생의 쓴맛을 회피하고 싶은 것은 자연스러운 일입니다. 우리가 상처 입을 때에는 하나님이 원망스럽기도 합니다. 하지만 주님은 고난을 사용하셔서 우리가 어려운 시기를 지날 때 인내할 수 있게 하심으로써 주님을 믿고 의지하며
복종하는 법을 우리에게 가르쳐주십니다. 욥처럼 우리도 신맛 나는 시간 가운데 기대치 않게 만나는 달콤한 맛, 즉 우리의 믿음을 견고하게 해주는 신령한 것을 배우기 위해 고난을 즐거워할 필요는 없습니다.

Sweet and Sour
When our toddler first bit into a lemon wedge, he wrinkled his nose, stuck out his tongue, and squeezed his eyes shut. “Sow-wah,” he said (sour).
I chuckled as I reached for the piece of fruit, intending to toss it into the trash.
“No!” Xavier scampered across the kitchen to get away from me. “Moe-wah!” ( more ). His lips puckered with every juice- squirting bite. I winced when he finally handed me the rind and walked away.
My taste buds accurately reflect my partiality to the sweet moments in life. My preference for avoiding all things bitter reminds me of Job’s wife, who seems to have shared my aversion to the sourness of suffering.
Job surely didn’t delight in hardship or trouble, yet he honored God through heart-wrenching circumstances (JOB 1:1–22). When painful sores afflicted Job’s body, he endured the agony (2:7–8). His wife told him to give up on God (V. 9), but Job responded by trusting the Lord through suffering and afflictions (V. 10).
It’s natural to prefer avoiding the bitter bites in life. We can even be tempted to lash out at God when we’re hurting. But the Lord uses trials, teaching us how to trust Him, depend on Him, and surrender to Him as He enables us to persevere through difficult times. And like Job, we don’t have to enjoy suffering to learn to savor the unexpected sweetness of sour moments—the divine strengthening of our faith. - XOCHITL DIXON
