룻의 이야기

룻은 눈물 없이 그녀의 이야기를 할 수 없습니다. 80대 중반의 나이에 거동이 불편해 자유롭게 움직일 수도 없는 그녀는 우리 교회 안에서 그다지 중요한 인물로 보이지 않을 수도 있습니다. 그녀는 교통수단을 얻기 위해 다른 사람들에게 의지해야 하고 혼자 살기 때문에 큰 영향력이 있는 것도 아닙니다.

하지만 그녀가 우리에게 자주 들려주는 그녀의 구원에 관한 이야기는 하나님의 은혜의 놀라운 예를 보여줍니다. 그녀가 30 대였을 때 친구의 초대로 어느 날 밤 어떤 모임에 가게 되었는데 그곳에서 설교말씀을 듣게 될 것이라고는 생각도 못했습니다. “만일 그런 모임인줄 알았다면 가지 않았을 거예요.”라고 그녀는 말합니다. 그녀에게는 이미 “종교”가 있었는데, 그것이 별로 소용에 닿지 않았기 때문이었습니다. 하지만 그녀는 그곳에 참석하게 되었고 그 밤에 예수님에 관한 복음을 듣게 되었습니다.

오십 년도 더 지난 지금, 예수님이 그녀의 삶을 어떻게 바꾸셨는지 이야기할 때면 그녀는 지금도 기쁨의 눈물을 흘립니다. 그날 밤 그녀는 하나님의 자녀가 되었습니다. 이 이야기는 언제 들어도 새롭습니다.

우리 이야기가 룻과 비슷하건 아니건 그것은 중요하지 않습니다. 중요한 것은 예수님과 그분의 죽음, 그리고 부활을 믿는 믿음으로 우리의 발걸음을 내딛는 것입니다. 바울 사도는 “네가 만일 네 입으로 예수를 주로 시인하며 또 하나님께서 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 것을 네 마음에 믿으면 구원을 받으리라”(로마서 10:9)라고 말했습니다.

그것이 바로 룻이 한 일입니다. 그리고 당신도 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 예수님은 구원하시고, 변화시키시고, 우리에게 새로운 삶을 주십니다.

Ruth’s Story

Ruth cannot tell her story without tears. In her mid-eighties and unable to get around much anymore, Ruth may not appear to be a central figure in our church’s life. She depends on others for rides, and because she lives alone she doesn’t have a huge circle of influence.

But when she tells us her story of salvation—as she does often—Ruth stands out as a remarkable example of God’s grace. Back when she was in her thirties, a friend invited her to go to a meeting one night. Ruth didn’t know she was going to hear a preacher. “I wouldn’t have gone if I knew,” she says. She already had “religion,” and it wasn’t doing her any good. But go she did. And she heard the good news about Jesus that night.

Now, more than fifty years later, she cries tears of joy when she talks of how Jesus transformed her life. That evening, she became a child of God. Her story never grows old.

It doesn’t matter if our story is similar to Ruth’s or not. What does matter is that we take the simple step of putting our faith in Jesus and His death and resurrection. The apostle Paul said, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (ROM. 10:9).

That’s what Ruth did. You can do that too. Jesus redeems, transforms, and gives us new life. - DAVE BRANON

감춰진 비밀 풀기

만화 ‘피너츠’의 저자 찰스 슐츠의 재치와 통찰력은 나를 항상 즐겁게 해주었습니다. 그의 만화에서 내가 가장 좋아했던 작품 중 하나는 교회의 젊은 사람들을 그린 책 안에 있습니다. 그 만화는 성경을 들고 있는 한 젊은 남자가 “구약성경의 비밀을 푸는데 첫걸음을 내딛은 것 같아......성경을 읽기 시작했거든!”(‘십대는 병이 아니다’)라며 친구에게 전화하는 모습을 보여주고 있습니다.

시편 119편에는 매일 하나님 말씀의 능력을 이해하고 경험하려는 저자의 갈망이 넘쳐흐르고 있습니다. “내가 주의 법을 어찌 그리 사랑하는지요 내가 그것을 종일 작은 소리로 읊조리나이다”(97절). 이런 열정적인 자세가 주님을 향한 지혜와 명철, 그리고 순종심을 성장하게 해줍니다(98-100절).

성경의 각 페이지들에는 “감춰진 비밀을 푸는” 마법의 공식이 들어있지 않습니다. 성경을 읽는 과정에서 우리는 관념적인 것을 넘어서 우리가 읽은 것에 대한 반응도 요구합니다. 어떤 구절들은 우리에게 여전히 수수께끼로 남아 있을 수도 있지만, 명확히 이해할 수 있는 성경의 진리들을 우리가 받아들이고 이렇게 주님께 말할 수 있습니다. “주의 말씀의 맛이 내게 어찌 그리 단지요 내 입에 꿀보다 더 다니이다 주의 법도들로 말미암아 내가 명철하게 되었으므로 모든 거짓 행위를 미워하나이다”(103-104절).

새로운 것을 찾아나가는 놀라운 여정이 하나님의 말씀 안에서 우리를 기다리고 있습니다.

Unraveling the Mysteries

I have always enjoyed the wit and insight of Peanuts creator, Charles Schulz. One of my favorite cartoons drawn by him appeared in a book about young people in the church. It shows a young man holding a Bible as he tells a friend on the phone, “I think I’ve made one of the first steps toward unraveling the mysteries of the Old Testament . . . I’m starting to read it!” ( Teen-Ager Is Not a Disease ).

Psalm 119 overflows with the writer’s hunger to understand and experience the power of God’s Word each day. “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (V. 97). This eager pursuit leads to growing wisdom, understanding, and obedience to the Lord (VV. 98–100).

The Bible doesn’t contain a magic formula for “unraveling the mysteries” in its pages. The process is more than mental and requires a response to what we read. While some passages may remain puzzling to us, we can embrace those truths we clearly understand, and say to the Lord, “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path” (VV. 103–104).

신뢰 항목

우리 부부가 그리스도께 우리의 삶을 드리기 전, 우리는 심각하게 이혼을 생각했었습니다. 하지만 하나님을 사랑하고 순종하기로 작정한 뒤 우리는 다시 서로에게 전념했습니다. 우리는 좋은 상담을 구하였고 성령님께 각 개인으로서, 또 부부로서 우리를 변화시켜 달라고 요청했습니다. 우리 하나님 아버지는 우리가 건전한 소통 방법을 개발하도록 계속 도와주시고, 어떤 일이 일어나도 주님과 우리 서로를 사랑하고 신뢰하는 방법을 가르쳐주십니다.

비록 우리가 결혼 25주년을 바라보고 있지만, 나는 가끔씩 하나님께서 우리의 시련 속에서 행하신 모든 일을 잊어버립니다. 때로는 하나님이 하신 일들에 의존하는 대신 필요없는 걱정을 하며 알지 못하는 것들에 대한 깊은 두려움과 씨름합니다.

신명기 1장에서 모세는 신뢰할 수 있는 하나님에 대해 단호히 이야기하며, 이스라엘 백성들에게 믿음으로 앞으로 나아가 땅을 차지하라고 격려했습니다(21절). 하지만 하나님의 백성들은 미래를 주님께 맡기고 의지하기 이전에 그들이 어떤 난관에 부딪치게 될지, 그리고 그들이 무엇을 받게 될 것인지에 대해 자세히 알려줄 것을 요구했습니다(22-33절).

그리스도를 따르는 사람들도 두려움이나 염려에 굴복하는 일에서 제외되지 않습니다. 마주칠 수도 있고 그렇지 않을 수도 있는 어려움들을 걱정하는 것은 우리로 믿음에 의지하는 것을 막아버리고, 더 나아가 하나님과 다른 사람들과의 관계를 손상시킬 수 있습니다. 하지만 성령님은 과거에 보여주셨던 주님의 신실하심에 대한 신뢰 항목을 만드는 것을 도와주실 수 있습니다. 그분은 어제, 오늘 그리고 영원토록 신뢰할 수 있는 하나님에 대한 용기 있는 확신을 우리에게 부여해주실 것입니다.

Trust Tally

Before my husband and I surrendered our lives to Christ, we seriously considered divorce. But after committing to love and obey God, we recommitted to each other. We sought wise counsel and invited the Holy Spirit to transform us individually and as a couple. Our heavenly Father continues to help us develop healthy communication skills. He’s teaching us how to love and trust Him—and one another—no matter what happens.

Yet, even as we head toward celebrating our twenty-fifth anniversary, I occasionally forget everything God has done in and through our trials. Sometimes, I struggle with a deep-seated fear of the unknown—experiencing unnecessary anxiety instead of relying on God’s track record.

In Deuteronomy 1, Moses affirmed the Lord’s reliability. He encouraged the Israelites to move forward in faith so they could enjoy their inheritance (V. 21). But God’s people demanded details about what they’d be up against and what they’d receive before committing to trust Him with their future (VV. 22–33).

Followers of Christ are not immune to succumbing to fear or anxiety. Worrying about what difficulties we may or may not encounter can keep us from depending on faith, and may even damage our relationships with God and others. But the Holy Spirit can help us create a trust tally of the Lord’s past faithfulness. He can empower us with courageous confidence in God’s trustworthiness yesterday, today, and forever. - XOCHITL DIXON

하나님 안에 뿌리내림

새집으로 이사한 친구네는 5년 후에 라벤더가 만개하기를 기대하면서 담장 주변에 등나무를 심었습니다. 그들은 이 나무를 조심스레 가지치기를 하고 돌보면서 20년도 넘게 즐겼습니다. 그런데 그들의 이웃이 담장 반대편에서 제초제를 뿌리자 등나무가 죽어버렸습니다. 독성이 등나무의 뿌리로 스며들어 나무가 죽어버린 것 같은 생각이 들었습니다. 하지만 놀랍게도, 그 다음해에 약간의 새순들이 땅에서 솟아났습니다.

예레미야 선지자가 하나님의 백성들이 그분을 신뢰할 때나 그분의 길을 무시할 때를 표현하기 위해 사용했던 예에서도 우리는 잘 자라는 나무와 죽어가는 나무의 상징을 봅니다. 하나님을 따르는 자들은 물가의 땅에 뿌리를 내려 열매를 맺고 (예레미야 17:8), 자신의 뜻대로 하는 자는 사막의 떨기나무와 같이 됩니다 (5-6절). 선지자는 하나님의 사람들이 참되고 살아계신 하나님을 의지하여 “물가에 심어진 나무”(8절)와 같이 되기를 갈망합니다.

우리는 하나님이 농부이시며(요한복음 15:1), 그분을 신뢰하며 확신을 가질 수 있음을(예레미야 17:7) 알고 있습니다. 우리가 온 마음으로 주님을 따름으로 열매를 계속 맺게 되기를 소원합니다.

Rooted in God

When friends moved into a new home, they planted wisteria near their fence and looked forward to the lavender blossom that would appear after five years of growth. Over two decades they enjoyed this plant, carefully pruning and tending it. But suddenly the wisteria died, for their neighbors had poured some weed killer by the other side of the fence. The poison seeped into the wisteria’s roots and the tree perished—or so my friends thought. To their surprise, the following year some shoots came through the ground.

We see the image of trees flourishing and perishing when the prophet Jeremiah relates them to God’s people who either trust in the Lord or ignore His ways. Those who follow God will send their roots into soil near water and will bear fruit (JER. 17:8), but those who follow their own hearts will be like a bush in the desert (VV. 5–6). The prophet yearns that God’s people would rely on the true and living God, that they would be “a tree planted by the water” (V. 8).

We know the “Father is the gardener” (JOHN 15:1) and that in Him we can trust and have confidence (JER. 17:7). May we follow Him with our whole heart as we bear fruit that lasts. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

하나님이 공급하신다

내 사무실 창문 밖에는 겨울을 나기 위해 도토리를 안전하고 찾기 쉬운 곳에 묻으려는 다람쥐들이 경주하듯 달리고 있습니다. 그들의 소동이 나를 즐겁게 합니다. 한 무리의 사슴이 우리 뒤뜰을 지나가면서도 소리 하나 내지 않지만 한 마리의 다람쥐가 침입자처럼 시끄러운 소리를 냅니다.

이 두 동물은 다른 면에서도 차이점을 보여줍니다. 사슴은 겨울 준비를 하지 않습니다. 그들은 눈이 올 때면 길을 따라 보이는 대로 찾아 먹습니다(우리 뒤뜰의 관상용 관목을 포함해서). 그러나 다람쥐들이 만약 그와 같이 한다면 굶어 죽을 것입니다. 그들은 적절한 양식을 찾을 수가 없을 것입니다.

사슴과 다람쥐는 어떻게 보면 하나님께서 우리를 돌보시는 방법을 보여줍니다. 주님은 우리로 하여금 일할 수 있게 하시고 미래를 위해 저축하도록 하십니다. 그리고 우리의 자원이 부족할 때 우리의 필요를 채워주십니다. 지혜의 문헌이 가르쳐주듯이 하나님은 풍성한 계절을 주셔서 부족한 계절을 준비하게 하십니다(잠언 12:11). 시편 23편이 말하는 것처럼, 주님은 우리를 위험한 곳을 지나 쉴만한 초장으로 인도하십니다.

하나님은 많이 가진 자들에게 그들이 가진 것을 어려운 자들에게 나누어주도록 하심으로써 공급해주시기도 합니다(신명기 24:19). 공급에 관해 성경이 말해주는 것은 바로 이것입니다. ‘할 수 있을 때 일하고, 할 수 있을 때 저축하고, 할 수 있을 때 나누고, 우리의 필요를 채워주시는 하나님을 신뢰하라.’

God Provides

Outside my office window, the squirrels are in a race against winter to bury their acorns in a safe, accessible place. Their commotion amuses me. An entire herd of deer can go through our back yard and not make a sound, but one squirrel sounds like an invasion.

The two creatures are different in another way as well. Deer do not prepare for winter. When the snow comes they eat whatever they can find along the way(including ornamental shrubs in our yard). But squirrels would starve if they followed that example. They would be unable to find suitable food.

The deer and the squirrel represent ways that God cares for us. He enables us to work and save for the future, and He meets our need when resources are scarce. As the wisdom literature teaches, God gives us seasons of plenty so that we can prepare for seasons of need (PROV. 12:11). And as Psalm 23 says, the Lord leads us through perilous places to pleasant pastures.

Another way that God provides is by instructing those with plenty to share with those in need (DEUT. 24:19). So when it comes to provision, the message of the Bible is this: Work while we can, save what we can, share what we can, and trust God to meet our needs. - JULIE ACKERMAN LINK

훨씬 더 좋은 것

내 생일은 어머니의 생일 바로 다음 날입니다. 청소년기에 나는 내 예산 범위 안에서 어머니를 기쁘게 해드릴 선물을 고르느라 머리를 재빠르게 굴리곤 했습니다. 어머니는 항상 내가 산 선물을 기쁘게 받으시며 그 다음날인 내 생일에 내게 선물을 주셨습니다. 예외 없이 어머니의 선물이 내 것보다 훨씬 좋았습니다. 어머니는 내가 드린 선물의 가치를 깎아내리려 의도한 것이 아니라, 나보다 훨씬 나은 형편에 따라 관대한 마음으로 선물을 주신 것이었습니다.

어머니께 선물을 드리고 싶은 내 바람은 다윗이 하나님의 집을 짓기를 원했던 일을 생각나게 해줍니다. 그의 궁전과 하나님께서 자신을 나타내신 성막이 너무 차이가 나는 것에 충격을 받은 다윗은 하나님의 성전을 짓기를 간절히 바랐습니다. 하나님은 드리고 싶어 하는 다윗의 소원을 받아주시는 대신, 다윗에게 훨씬 더 좋은 선물을 주셨습니다. 하나님은 다윗의 아들 중 한 명(솔로몬)이 성전을 건축할 것과(역대상 17:11) 다윗의 집, 즉 왕조를 일으키시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 두 번째 약속은 솔로몬으로부터 시작하여 그 왕관이 “영원토록 튼튼하게 서게” (12절) 되었던 예수님에게서 궁극적으로 성취되었습니다. 다윗은 그가 가진 유한한 자원에서 드리기를 원했지만, 하나님은 무한한 것으로 약속해주셨습니다.

다윗과 같이 우리도 감사와 사랑으로 항상 하나님께 드릴 수 있도록 마음이 움직일 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그리고 하나님께서 예수님 안에서 우리에게 얼마나 풍성히 베푸셨는지를 우리가 항상 볼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Exceedingly Better

My birthday is the day after my mother’s. As an adolescent, I would scramble to think of a gift that delighted my mom yet fit in my budget. She always received my purchases with appreciation, and on the following day, my birthday, she would present her gift to me. Without fail, her gift vastly outshone mine. Her intention wasn’t to diminish what I’d given her; she simply gave generously from her resources, which far exceeded my own.

My desire to give to my mother reminds me of David’s wish to build a home for God. Struck by the contrast between his palace and the tent where God revealed Himself, David longed to build God a temple. Instead of granting David’s wish to give, God responded by giving David an exceedingly better gift. God promised that not only would one of David’s children (Solomon) build the temple (1 CHRON. 17:11), but that He would build David a house, a dynasty. That promise began with Solomon but found its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus, whose throne was indeed “established forever” (V. 12). David wanted to give from his finite resources, but God promised something infinite.

Like David, may we always be moved to give to God out of gratitude and love. And may we always see how much more abundantly He has given to us in Jesus. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

광야에서 살아남음

1960년대, 킹스턴 트리오가 “데저트 피트”라는 노래를 발표했습니다. 이 발라드풍 노래는 사막을 건너다가 수동펌프를 발견한 한 목마른 카우보이에 대해 이야기합니다. 그 펌프 옆에는 데저트 피트가 남겨놓은 메모가 있었는데. 거기에는 그 메모를 보는 사람은 그곳에 있는 물병의 물을 마시지 말고 그 물을 우물에서 물을 끌어올리는 마중물로 쓰라고 권하는 글이 적혀 있었습니다.

카우보이는 물을 마시고 싶은 충동을 억제하고 그 메모가 하라는 대로 합니다. 그 지시를 따르기 때문에 그는 시원하고 흡족한 물을 충분히 마실 수 있게 됩니다. 그가 믿고 그대로 따르지 않았다면 아마도 겨우 목을 축일 정도의 미지근한 물만 마실 수 있었을 것입니다.

이 이야기는 광야를 지나가던 이스라엘 백성들을 생각나게 해줍니다. 그들의 갈증이 극도에 달했을 때(출애굽기 17:1-7), 모세가 하나님께 부르짖었습니다. 하나님이 그에게 지팡이로 호렙산 반석을 치라 하시자, 모세는 믿고 복종했으며 그 반석에서 물이 쏟아져 나왔습니다.

슬프게도 이스라엘 백성들은 일관되게 모세의 믿음의 표본을 따르지 않았습니다. 결국 “들은 그 말씀이 그들에게는 아무런 유익이 되지 못하였습니다. 그들은 그 말씀을 듣고서도, 그것을 믿음과 결합시키지 않았기 때문입니다”(히브리서 4:2, 새번역).

때로는 삶이 매우 건조한 사막처럼 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 전혀 생각지도 않은 상황에서 우리의 영적인 갈증을 해소시켜 주십니다. 우리가 믿음으로 하나님의 말씀의 약속들을 신뢰할 때, 우리는 생명수의 강과 매일의 필요를 채워주시는 은혜를 체험하게 됩니다.

생명수 되시는 예수님만이 하나님을 향한 갈증을 해소시켜주실 수 있다.

Surviving the Wilderness

In the 1960s, the Kingston Trio released a song called “Desert Pete.” The ballad tells of a thirsty cowboy who is crossing the desert and finds a hand pump. Next to it, Desert Pete has left a note urging the reader not to drink the water in the jar left there but to use its contents to prime the pump.

The cowboy resists the temptation to drink and uses the water as the note instructs. In reward for his obedience, he receives an abundance of cold, satisfying water. Had he not acted in faith, he would have had only a jar of unsatisfying, warm water to drink.

This reminds me of Israel’s journey through the wilderness. When their thirst became overwhelming (EX. 17:1–7), Moses sought the Lord. He was told to strike the rock of Horeb with his staff. Moses believed and obeyed, and water gushed from the stone.

Sadly, Israel would not consistently follow Moses’s example of faith. Ultimately, “the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed” (HEB. 4:2).

Sometimes life can seem like an arid desert. But God can quench our spiritual thirst in the most unlikely circumstances. When by faith we believe the promises of God’s Word, we can experience rivers of living water and grace for our daily needs. - DENNIS FISHER

변장하고 계신 예수님

외출을 할 수 없는 시어머니를 모시고 사는 한 친구가, 하루는 시어머니에게 가장 원하는 것이 무엇인지 물어보았습니다. 시어머니는 “누가 내 발을 씻겨줬으면 좋겠어.”라고 대답 했습니다. 친구는 “그 일이 얼마나 싫었는지! 시어머니가 발을 씻겨달라고 하실 때마다 화가 났고, 내 감정이 드러나지 않게 해달라고 하나님께 기도하곤 했어.”라고 고백했습니다.

그러나 어느 날 투덜거리는 그녀의 태도가 순식간에 변해버렸습니다. 그녀는 이렇게 말했습니다. 그녀는 대야와 수건을 가져와 시어머니의 발아래 무릎을 꿇었는데, “내가 올려다보는데 갑자기 내가 예수님의 발을 씻기고 있는 것 같았어. 시어머니는 변장하고 계신 예수님이셨어!” 그 일 이후 그녀에게는 시어머니의 발을 씻기는 것이 영광으로 느껴졌습니다.

이 감동적인 이야기를 들으며 나는 감람산 기슭에서 세상의 마지막에 관하여 하신 예수님의 이야기를 생각했습니다. 왕이신 하나님은 그분의 자녀들이 병든 자를 방문하고 주린 자에게 먹을 것을 주었을 때 “너희가 여기 내 형제 중에 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라”(마태복음 25:40)라고 말씀하시면서 그분의 자녀들을 천국으로 맞아들이십니다. 우리가 옥에 갇힌 자들을 찾아가고 가난한
자들에게 옷을 줄 때 우리 역시 주님을 섬기는 것입니다.

이제는 새로운 사람을 만날 때마다 “변장하고 계신 예수님이세요?” 라고 스스로 질문해보는 내 친구처럼, 당신도 오늘 그러실 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Jesus in Disguise

When a friend cared for her housebound mother-in-law, she asked her what she longed for the most. Her mother-in-law said, “For my feet to be washed.” My friend admitted, “How I hated that job! Each time she asked me to do it I was resentful, and would ask God to hide my feelings from her.”

But one day her grumbling attitude changed in a flash. As she got out the bowl and towel and knelt at her mother-in-law’s feet, she said, “I looked up, and for a moment I felt like I was washing the feet of Jesus Himself. She was Jesus in disguise!” After that, she felt honored to wash her mother-in-law’s feet.

When I heard this moving account, I thought of Jesus’s story about the end of time that He taught on the slopes of the Mount of Olives. The King welcomes into His kingdom His sons and daughters, saying that when they visited the sick or fed the hungry, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (MATT. 25:40). We too serve Jesus Himself when we visit those in prison or give clothes to the needy.

형제간

나이 차이가 일 년도 안 되는 형과 나는 자라면서 치열하게 “경쟁했습니다”(다시 말하자면, 많이 싸웠지요). 아버지는 형제들이 많으셔서 우리를 이해하셨지만, 어머니는 그다지 잘 이해하지 못하셨습니다.

이런 우리 이야기는 ‘형제간의 대립에 관한 짧은 역사’라고 부제가 붙을만한 창세기에 아주 어울릴 수 있을 것입니다. 가인과 아벨(창세기 4장), 이삭과 이스마엘(21:8-10), 요셉과 베냐민을 제외한 그의 형제들(37장). 그러나 형제간의 원한으로 치면 야곱과 에서의 이야기를 능가할 수 없습니다.

에서의 쌍둥이 동생 야곱이 두 번이나 그를 속였기 때문에 에서는 야곱을 죽이고 싶어 했습니다(27:41). 몇 십 년이 지난 후 야곱과 에서가 화해를 하지만(33장), 그들의 경쟁 관계는 에돔과 이스라엘 나라가 된 그들의 후손들에게서도 계속되었습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 약속의 땅으로 들어가려고 했을 때 에돔은 군대를 보내어 그들을 위협했습니다(민수기 20:14-21). 오랜 후에 예루살렘 주민들이 침략자들을 피해 에돔으로 도망갔을 때, 그들은 그 피난민들을 살육하였습니다(오바댜 1:10-14).

다행히 성경에는 형제간의 대립 같은 통탄할 이야기만 있는 것이 아니라 하나님의 구원의 이야기도 함께 들어있습니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 “새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라”(요한복음 13:34)고 말씀하시며 모든 것을 바꾸셨습니다. 그리고는 우리를 위해 죽으심으로 그 말씀이 무엇을 뜻하는지를 보여주셨습니다.

형과 나는 나이가 들어가면서 친해졌습니다. 하나님이 바로 그렇게 하십니다. 하나님이 주시는 용서에 응답하여 받아들일 때, 하나님의 은혜가 형제간의 경쟁을 형제간의 우애로 변화시킬 수 있습니다.

Brother to Brother

My brother and I, less than a year apart in age, were quite “competitive” growing up (translation: we fought !). Dad understood. He had brothers. Mom? Not so much.

Our story could have fit in the book of Genesis, which might well be subtitled A Brief History of Sibling Rivalry. Cain and Abel (GEN. 4); Isaac and Ishmael (21:8–10); Joseph and everyone not named Benjamin (CH. 37). But for brother-to-brother animosity, it’s hard to beat Jacob and Esau.

Esau’s twin brother had cheated him twice, so he wanted to kill Jacob (27:41). Decades later Jacob and Esau would reconcile (CH. 33). But the rivalry continued on in their descendants, who became the nations of Edom and Israel. When the people of Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land, Edom met them with threats and an army(NUM. 20:14–21). Much later, as Jerusalem’s citizens fled invading forces, Edom slaughtered the refugees (OBAD. 1:10–14).

Happily for us, the Bible contains not just the sad account of our brokenness but the story of God’s redemption as well. Jesus changed everything, telling His disciples, “A new command I give you: Love one another” (JOHN 13:34). Then He showed us what that means by dying for us.

As my brother and I got older, we became close. That’s the thing with God. When we respond to the forgiveness He offers, His grace can transform our sibling rivalries into brotherly love. - TIM GUSTAFSON

다른 종류의 사랑

내가 좋아하는 한 교회는 몇 년 전에 전과자들이 사회에 적응하는 것을 도와주는 사역을 시작했습니다. 지금 그 교회는 사회 온갖 계층의 사람들로 넘쳐나고 있습니다. 나는 그 교회를 사랑합니다. 왜냐하면 천국은 각양각색의 사람들로 가득한데 그들은 전부 구원받은 죄인들이며 모두 다같이 예수님의 사랑으로 묶여 있을 것이라는, 내가 상상하는 천국을 떠올리게 하기 때문입니다.

하지만 때로 나는 교회가 용서받은 죄인들을 위한 피난처가 되기보다는 배타적인 모임이 된 것은 아닌지 궁금할 때가 있습니다. 사람들이 자연스럽게 “어떤 특정한 종류”의 모임에 끌려서 서로 편안한 사람들끼리만 뭉치게 될 때, 다른 이들은 자신들이 하찮은 존재 같은 느낌을 받게 됩니다. 그러나 그것은 예수님이 제자들에게 “내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라”(요한복음 15:12)고 말씀하셨을 때주님이 원하셨던 것이 아닙니다. 주님의 교회는 서로가 모두에게 주님의 사랑을 나누는 연장선에 있어야 했습니다.

상처 받고 외면 받은 사람들이 예수님 안에서 사랑의 피난처와 평안과 용서를 찾을 수 있다면, 마땅히 교회에서도 그런 것들을 찾을 수 있어야 합니다. 그러므로 우리가 만나는 모든 사람들, 특히 우리와 같지 않은 사람들에게 예수님의 사랑을 보여주도록 하십시다. 예수님은 우리를 통해 우리 주위의 모든 사람들을 사랑하기를 원하십니다. 사람들이 사랑 안에서 하나 되어 함께 예배할 때, 그 천국의 일부를 이 땅에서 즐길 수 있으니 그 얼마나 기쁜 일인가요!

Love of Another Kind

One of my favorite churches started several years ago as a ministry to ex-prisoners who were transitioning back into society. Now the church flourishes with people from all walks of life. I love that church because it reminds me of what I picture heaven will be like—filled with different kinds of people, all redeemed sinners, all bound together by the love of Jesus.

Sometimes, though, I wonder if church seems more like an exclusive club than a safe haven for forgiven sinners. As people naturally gravitate into groups of “a certain kind” and cluster around those they feel comfortable with, it leaves others feeling marginalized. But that’s not what Jesus had in mind when He told His disciples to “love each other as I have loved you” (JOHN 15:12). His church was to be an extension of His love mutually shared with all.

If hurting, rejected people can find loving refuge, comfort, and forgiveness in Jesus, they should expect no less from the church. So let’s exhibit the love of Jesus to everyone we encounter—especially those who are not like us. All around us are people Jesus wants to love through us. What a joy it is when people unite to worship together in love—a slice of heaven we can enjoy here on earth! - JOE STOWELL
