위로의 손

“이 환자는 전투적입니다.”라고 간호사가 기록해놓았습니다.

내가 복잡한 개심수술에서 깨어나면서 알레르기 반응을 일으키고 있다는 것을 간호사가 미처 깨닫지 못했던 것입니다. 나는 목 안으로 관이 꽂힌 채로 완전히 혼란한 상태에 있었습니다. 내가 갑자기 호흡기를 빼 버릴까봐 내 팔들은 끈으로 묶여 있었는데, 내 몸이 격렬하게 떨리기 시작했습니다. 그것은 두렵고 고통스러운 사건이었습니다. 그러던 어느 순간 내 침대 오른쪽에 있던 간호보조사가 손을 내려 지그시 내 손을 잡아주었습니다. 그 뜻밖의 행동이 나를 특별히 평온하게 해주었습니다. 나는 안정되기 시작했고 그렇게 심하게 떨리던 내 몸이 잠잠해졌습니다.

다른 환자들과의 경험을 통해 간호보조사는 위로의 손이 나에게도 통할 거라는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 이것은 하나님이 그분의 자녀들이 고통당할 때 어떻게 위로하시는지를 생생히 보여주는 한 가지 예였습니다.

위로는 타인을 돌보는 모든 사람들의 강력하고 인상 깊은 도구입니다. 바울도 고린도후서 1:3-4에서 그 도구가 하나님의 공구함에서 중요한 부분을 차지한다고 말합니다. 뿐만 아니라 하나님은 우리로 하여금 우리가 하나님으로부터 받은 위로를 기억하여 같은 상황에 처한 다른 사람들을 위로하라고 하심으로써 하나님의 위로의 영향력을 증폭시키십니다(4-7절). 이것은 하나님의 위대한 사랑의 다른 증표이며, 어떤 때는 아주 단순한 몸짓만으로도 우리가 다른 사람에게 나누어줄 수 있는 것입니다.

단순한 몸짓이 강력한 위로를 가져다줄 수 있다.

The Hand of Comfort

“Patient is combative,” the nurse’s notes read.

What she didn’t realize until later was that I was having an allergic reaction as I awakened after a complicated open-heart surgery. I was a mess, with a tube down my throat. My body began shaking violently, straining against the straps on my arms, which were there to keep me from suddenly pulling out my breathing tube. It was a frightening and painful episode. At one point, a nurse’s assistant to the right side of my bed reached down and simply held my hand. It was an unexpected move, and it struck me as especially gentle. I began to relax, which caused my body to stop shaking so badly.

Having experienced this with other patients, the nurse’s assistant knew that a hand of comfort could minister to me as well. It was a vivid example of how God uses comfort when His children suffer.

Comfort is a powerful and memorable tool for any caregiver, and Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 it’s an important part of God’s toolbox. Not only that, but God also multiplies the impact of His comfort by calling us to use the memory of the comfort He gives us to comfort others in similar situations (VV. 4–7). It is but another sign of His great love; and one we can share with others—sometimes in the simplest of gestures. - RANDY KILGORE

좋은 결말

우리가 조명을 줄이고 ‘아폴로 13호’ 영화를 볼 준비를 마친 참에, 친구가 “그들 모두가 죽은 게 유감이야”라고 한숨을 쉬며 말했습니다. 나는 언제 비극적인 일이 일어날까 기다리며 조바심을 가지고 1970년에 있었던 우주비행에 대한 영화를 보다가 마지막 자막이 올라갈 때쯤에야 속았다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 비록 많은 어려움을 겪긴 했어도 우주비행사들은 결국 살아서 돌아온 실제 그 일의 마지막이 어땠는지 잘 몰랐고 기억도 나지 않았던 것입니다.

그리스도 안에 있는 우리도 이야기의 결말을 알 수 있습니다. 우리도 살아서 돌아갈 것입니다. 그것은 요한계시록에서 보는 것과 같이 하나님 아버지와 영원히 살게 되는 것을 뜻합니다. 주님께서 “새 하늘과 새 땅”을 만드시고 모든 만물을 새롭게 하실 것입니다(21:1,5). 두려움이 없고 밤이 없는 새 도성에서 주님의 백성들은 주 하나님의 환영을 받으며 주님과 함께 살게 될 것입니다. 이 좋은 결말을 아는 우리에게는 희망이 있습니다.

이것이 어떤 차이를 만들어낼까요? 그것은 사랑하는 사람이나 자기 자신의 죽음을 맞이할 때와 같이 지극히 힘든 순간들을 변화시켜줄 수 있습니다. 죽음에 대한 생각에 우리가 위축될 수 있겠지만, 우리는 영원에 대한 약속이 주는 기쁨을 누릴 수 있습니다. 다시 저주가 없고 하나님의 빛 안에서 영원토록 살 수 있는 그 도성을 간절히 사모합니다(22:5).

A Good Ending

As the lights dimmed and we prepared to watch Apollo 13, my friend said under his breath, “Shame they all died.” I watched the movie about the 1970 spaceflight with apprehension, waiting for tragedy to strike, and only near the closing credits did I realize I’d been duped. I hadn’t known or remembered the end of the true story—that although the astronauts faced many hardships, they made it home alive.

In Christ, we can know the end of the story—that we too will make it home alive. By that I mean we will live forever with our heavenly Father, as we see in the book of Revelation. The Lord will create a “new heaven and a new earth” as He makes all things new (21:1, 5). In the new city, the Lord God will welcome His people to live with Him, without fear and without the night. We have hope in knowing the end of the story.

What difference does this make? It can transform times of extreme difficulty, such as when people face the loss of a loved one or even their own death. Though we recoil at the thought of dying, yet we can embrace the joy of the promise of eternity. We long for the city where no longer will there be any curse, where we’ll live forever by God’s light (22:5). -

말하기 전에 생각하라

치웅은 저녁식사를 하기로 계획했던 유명한 식당으로 가는 길을 아내가 확인하지 않은 것에 화가 났습니다. 집으로 돌아갈 비행기를 타기 전에 온 가족이 멋진 저녁식사를 함으로써 일본에서의 휴가를 마무리 지으려 했었는데, 이제 시간이 늦어져 저녁식사를 하지 못하게 된 것입니다. 실망한 치웅은 아내가 계획을 잘못 세웠다고 아내를 탓했습니다.

나중에 치웅은 아내를 탓하는 말을 한 것을 후회했습니다. 그때 자기가 너무 심했었고, 또 자신이 식당으로 가는 길을 찾아 확인할 수도 있었으며, 지난 7일간 아내가 휴가일정을 잘 계획해줬던 것에 대해 감사하지도 않았다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

우리 중 많은 사람들이 치웅과 비슷할 것입니다. 우리는 화났을 때 흥분하여 자제하지 못하고 말을 마구 내뱉어버립니다. 우리도 시편 기자처럼 “여호와여 내 입에 파수꾼을 세우시고 내 입술의 문을 지키소서” (시편 141:3)라고 기도할 필요가 있습니다.

하지만 어떻게 시편 기자처럼 그렇게 할 수 있을까요? 여기 도움이 될 말이 있습니다. 말하기 전에 먼저 생각하십시오. 당신의 말이 선하고 도움이 되고 자애롭고 친절합니까?(에베소서 4:29-32 참조).

우리 입에 파수꾼을 세운다는 것은 우리가 화났을 때 입을 다물거나, 올바른 어조로 올바른 말을 하거나 아니면 아무 말도 하지 않도록 하나님의 도움을 구하는 것을 말합니다. 우리의 말을 제어하는 것은 일생을 두고 해야 할 일입니다. 그러나 감사하게도 하나님은 “자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 우리에게 소원을 두고 행하도록”(빌립보서 2:13) 우리 안에서 역사하고 계십니다.

Think Before You Speak

Cheung was upset with his wife for failing to check the directions to the famous restaurant where they hoped to dine. The family had planned to round out their holiday in Japan with a scrumptious meal before catching the flight home. Now they were running late and would have to miss that meal. Frustrated, Cheung criticized his wife for her poor planning.

Later Cheung regretted his words. He had been too harsh, plus he realized that he could have checked the directions himself and he had failed to thank his wife for the other seven days of great planning.

Many of us may identify with Cheung. We are tempted to blow up when angry and to let words fly without control. Oh, how we need to pray as the psalmist did: “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD ; keep watch over the door of my lips” (PS. 141:3).

But how can we do that? Here’s a helpful tip: Think before you speak. Are your words good and helpful, gracious and kind? (SEE EPH. 4:29–32.)

Setting a guard over our mouth requires that we keep our mouth shut when we’re irritated and that we seek the Lord’s help to say the right words with the right tone or, perhaps, not speak at all. When it comes to controlling our speech, it’s a lifelong work. Thankfully, God is working in us, giving us “the desire and the power to do what pleases him” (PHIL. 2:13 NLT ). - POH FANG CHIA

새로운 기회

“나를 전혀 알지 못하는데 어떻게 그렇게 친절을 베푸실 수 있나요?”

린다는 잘못된 결정을 한 탓에 자기 나라도 아닌 타국에서 감옥에 갇히게 되었습니다. 감옥에서 6년을 복역한 후 풀려나게 되었지만 갈 곳이 없었습니다. 이제 이 세상에서 그녀의 삶은 끝났다고 생각했습니다! 그녀의 가족들이 그녀가 집으로 돌아올 수 있는 교통편을 마련하기 위해 돈을 모으고 있는 동안, 한 친절한 부부가 그녀에게 머무를 곳과 음식을 제공하고 도움의 손길도 주었습니다. 린다는 그들의 도움에 매우 감동하여, 그녀를 사랑하시며 그녀에게 새로운 기회를 주시기를 원하는 하나님에 관한 복음을 그들이 전할 때 기꺼이 경청했습니다.

린다의 이야기는 성경에서 남편과 두 아들을 외국 땅에서 모두 잃고 이제 그녀의 삶은 끝났다고 생각했던 과부 나오미를 떠올려줍니다 (룻기 1장). 하지만 하나님은 나오미를 잊지
않으셨습니다. 그리고 며느리의 사랑과 보아스라는 경건한 사람의 긍휼을 통해 나오미는 하나님의 사랑을 보았고 새로운 기회를 얻게 되었습니다(4:13-17).

동일하신 그 하나님께서 오늘날에도 우리를 보살펴주십니다. 다른 사람들의 사랑을 통해 우리는 하나님이 함께 계심을 확인할 수 있고, 우리가 잘 알지도 못하는 사람들의 돕는 손길을 통해 하나님의 은혜를 볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 무엇보다도, 하나님은 우리에게 새로 시작할 기회를 주고자 하십니다. 린다와 나오미처럼, 우리도 일상생활 속에서 하나님의 손길을
보며, 하나님이 항상 그분의 친절을 베풀고 계신다는 것을 깨달을 필요가 있습니다.

Second Chances

“How can you be so kind if you don’t even know me!”

By making some wrong decisions, Linda had ended up in jail in a country not her own. For six years she remained in prison, and when she was set free she didn’t have anywhere to go. She thought her life was over! While her family gathered money to buy her ticket home, a kind couple offered her lodging, food, and a helping hand. Linda was so touched by their kindness that she willingly listened as they told her the good news of a God who loves her and wants to give her a second chance.

Linda reminds me of Naomi, a widow in the Bible who lost her husband and two sons in a foreign land and thought her life was over (RUTH 1). However, the Lord hadn’t forgotten Naomi, and through the love of her daughter-in-law and the compassion of a godly man named Boaz, Naomi saw God’s love and was given a second chance (4:13–17).

The same God cares for us today. Through the love of others we can be reminded of His presence. We can see God’s grace in the helping hand of people we may not even know well. But above all, God is willing to give us a fresh start. We just need, like Linda and Naomi, to see God’s hand in our everyday lives and realize He never stops showing us His kindness. - KEILA OCHOA

우리의 기도, 하나님의 시간

때때로 하나님은 우리의 기도에 바로 응답하시지 않고 시간을 두시는데, 이럴 경우 하나님의 뜻을 이해하기 쉽지 않습니다.

사가랴가 바로 그런 경우였습니다. 어느 날, 천사 가브리엘이 예루살렘 성전의 분향하는 제단에 나타나 그에게 “사가랴여 무서워하지 말라 ‘너의 간구함이 들린지라’ 네 아내 엘리사벳이 네게 아들을 낳아 주리니 그 이름을 요한이라 하라”(누가복음 1:13)고 말했습니다.

아마도 사가랴는 훨씬 오래 전에 아이를 달라는 기도를 하나님께 드렸을 것입니다. 이제 그는 엘리사벳이 아이를 출산할 수 있는 나이가 훨씬 지난 시점에 천사 가브리엘의 메시지를 들으며 당황해 했습니다. 그럼에도, 하나님은 그의 기도를 들어주셨습니다.

하나님의 기억력은 완벽합니다. 여러 해가 지난 후에도 우리의 기도를 기억하실 뿐만 아니라, 우리 삶을 지나 다음 세대들에 이를 때까지도 기억하십니다. 우리의 기도를 결코 잊지 않으시며, 우리가 처음 하나님께 간구한 때로부터 오래 뒤에 응답하기도 하십니다. 때로는 “안 된다”, 때로는 “기다려라”고 응답하기도 하시지만, 하나님의 응답은 언제나 사랑하는 마음에서 비롯되는 것입니다. 우리가 하나님의 방법을 헤아리지 못하지만, 그것들은 다 선한 것임을 우리는 믿을 수 있습니다.

사가랴는 그 점을 깨달았습니다. 그는 한 아들을 구했지만, 하나님은 그에게 더 많은 것을 주셨습니다. 그의 아들 요한은 장차 성장하여 메시아가 오실 것을 세상에 알릴 바로 그 선지자가 될 것이었습니다.

사가랴의 경험은 우리가 기도할 때 하나님이 응답하시는 시기가 우리 생각과 아주 다르더라도 충분히 기다릴 가치가 있다는, 그래서 또한 우리에게 격려가 된다는 중요한 진리를 보여주고 있습니다.

Our Prayers, God’s Timing

Sometimes God takes His time in answering our prayers, and that isn’t always easy for us to understand.

That was the situation for Zechariah, a priest whom the angel Gabriel appeared to one day near an altar in the temple in Jerusalem. Gabriel told him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John” (LUKE 1:13, ITALICS ADDED).

But Zechariah had probably asked God for a child years before, and he struggled with Gabriel’s message because Elizabeth was now well beyond the expected age for childbirth. Still, God answered his prayer.

God’s memory is perfect. He is able to remember our prayers not only for years but also for generations beyond our lifetime. He never forgets them and may move in response long after we first brought our requests to Him. Sometimes His answer is “no,” other times it is “wait”—but His response is always measured with love. God’s ways are beyond us, but we can trust that they are good.

Zechariah learned this. He asked for a son, but God gave him even more. His son John would grow up to be the very prophet who would announce the arrival of the Messiah.

Zechariah’s experience demonstrates a vital truth that should also encourage us as we pray: God’s timing is rarely our own, but it is always worth waiting for. - JAMES BANKS

기쁨과 정의

아시아에서 있었던 한 학회에서, 짧은 몇 시간 동안에 나는 두가지 놀라운 대화를 나누었습니다. 그 첫째는, 어떤 목회자가 살인이라는 누명을 쓰고 그 누명이 벗겨질 때까지 11년간이나 감옥살이를 했다고 말했습니다. 그리고 다음으로, 한 가족이 그들의 조국에서 종교적인 탄압을 피하기 위해 많은 돈을 썼는데, 결국 자신들을 구해달라고 돈을 지불했던 바로 그 사람들에게 배신을 당했다고 했습니다. 그 가족은 지금 난민 수용소에서 몇 년을 지내면서, 정착할 곳을 찾을 수 있을지도 확신하지 못하고 있습니다.

이 두 경우 다, 그들의 희생은 정의의 부재로 인해 생겨난 것입니다. 그것은 우리가 사는 이 세상이 망가졌다는 한 가지 증거이기도 합니다. 그러나 이 정의의 진공 상태가 영원히 지속되는 것은 아닙니다.

시편 67편은 하나님의 사람들에게 이 상처 입은 세상에 하나님을 알리라고 말합니다. 그 결과로 기쁨이 생기게 됩니다. 그 기쁨은 하나님의 사랑에 대한 응답이기도 하면서, 또 하나님의 정의 때문이기도 합니다. 시편기자는 말합니다. “온 백성은 기쁘고 즐겁게 노래할지니 주는 민족들을 공평히 심판하시며 땅 위의 나라들을 다스리실 것임이니이다”(4절).

성경 기자들은 “공평”(공정과 정의)이 하나님의 사랑의 주 요소라는 것을 이해했지만, 그것이 미래에서나 온전히 이루어질 것이라는 것 또한 알고 있었습니다. 그때까지, 우리는 정의롭지 못한 이 세상에서 다른 이들을 하나님의 신적인 정의로 향하도록 이끌 수 있습니다. 주님이 오시면 “의가 물 같이, 공의가 마르지 않는 강 같이 흐르는”(아모스 5:24) 것을 보게 될 것입니다.

Joy and Justice

At a conference in Asia, I had two eye-opening conversations in the span of a few hours. First, a pastor told of spending eleven years in prison for a wrongful murder conviction before he was cleared. Then, a group of families shared how they had spent a fortune to escape religious persecution in their homeland, only to be betrayed by the very people they had paid to bring about their rescue. Now, after years in a refugee camp, they wonder if they will ever find a home.

In both cases, victimization was compounded by an absence of justice—just one evidence of our world’s brokenness. But this vacuum of justice is not a permanent condition.

Psalm 67 calls on God’s people to make Him known to our hurting world. The result will be joy, not only as a response to God’s love but also because of His justice. “May the nations be glad and sing for joy,” says the psalmist, “for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth” (V. 4).

Although the Bible writers understood that “equity” (fairness and justice) is a key component of God’s love, they also knew that it will only be fully realized in the future. Until then, in our world of injustice, we can serve to point others to our God’s divine justice. His coming will see “justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!” (AMOS 5:24). - BILL CROWDER

그 유명한 미소

우리 부부가 파리의 루브르를 방문하는 특권을 누린 후, 나는 11살난 손녀 애디에게 전화를 걸었습니다. 다빈치의 유명한 그림 ‘모나리자’를 봤다는 얘기를 하자, 애디는 “그녀가 미소 짓고 있던가요?”라고 물었습니다.

그것이 이 그림을 둘러싼 가장 큰 질문이 아닐까요? 레오나르도가 유화로 그린 지 600년이 더 지난 지금도 우리는 이 여인이 웃고 있는지 아닌지를 모릅니다. 그림의 아름다움에 도취되어 있지만, 우리는 모나리자의 행실에 대해 잘 모릅니다.

“미소”는 그 그림에 강한 호기심을 갖게 하는 한 요소이기도 합니다. 하지만 도대체 그것이 얼마나 중요한 것일까요? 미소가 성경에 언급되어 있을까요? 사실, 그 단어는 성경에 다섯 번도 안 되게 나오긴 하지만, 우리가 해야 할 행동으로는 나와 있지 않습니다. 그보다도 성경은 우리를 미소 짓게 만드는 태도에 대해 말하고 있는데, 그것은 바로 ‘기쁨’이라는 단어입니다. 우리는 성경에서 거의 250번이나 기쁨이라는 단어를 봅니다. 다윗은 주님을 생각할 때 “내 마음이 크게 기뻐하며”(시편 28:7)라고 말하고 있고, 우리는 “여호와를 즐거워” (시편 33:1) 해야 하며, 주의 증거들이 “[우리] 마음의 즐거움”(119:111) 이며, “여호와께서 우리를 위하여 큰 일을 행하셨으니 우리는 기쁘도다”(126:3)라고 말하고 있습니다.

분명히, 우리를 위해 하나님이 하시는 모든 것을 통해 주시는 기쁨은 우리의 얼굴에 미소를 가져다줄 수 있습니다.

사랑하는 하나님, 하나님은 좋은 아버지시고 우리를 웃게 하십니다. 주님은 세상이 줄 수 있는 어떤 것보다 더 뛰어난 기쁨을 주십니다. 우리의 모습을 통해 그 기쁨을 다른 사람들에게 보여줄 수 있도록 도와주소서.

마음의 소망은 얼굴에 미소로 나타난다.

That Famous Smile

After my wife and I had the privilege of visiting the Louvre in Paris, I called our eleven-year-old granddaughter Addie on the phone. When I mentioned seeing da Vinci’s famous painting Mona Lisa , Addie asked, “Is she smiling?”

Isn’t that the big question surrounding this painting? More than 600 years after Leonardo captured this subject in oil, we still don’t know if the lady was smiling or not. Though enraptured by the painting’s beauty, we are unsure about Mona Lisa’s demeanor.

The “smile” is part of the intrigue of the painting. But how important is this anyway? Is smiling something the Bible mentions? In reality, the word appears less than five times in Scripture, and never as something we are told to do. However, the Bible does suggest for us an attitude that leads to smiles—and that is the word joy . Nearly 250 times we read about joy: “My heart leaps for joy,” David says as he thinks about the Lord (PS. 28:7). We are to “sing joyfully to the LORD ” (PS. 33:1); God’s statutes are “the joy of [our] heart” (119:111); and we are “filled with joy” because “the LORD has done great things for us” (126:3).

Clearly, the joy God provides through everything He has done for us can bring a smile to our face. - DAVE BRANON

능력의 아기

그 아기를 처음 봤을 때 나는 울었습니다. 아이는 아기 침대에서 잠을 자는 온전한 신생아처럼 보였습니다. 그러나 우리는 그 아기가 예수님의 팔에 안기기 전에는 깨어나지 않을 것을 알고 있었습니다.

아기는 몇 달 간 숨이 붙어 있었습니다. 그러다가 아기의 엄마가 가슴이 미어지는 이메일을 통해 아기의 죽음을 우리에게 알려 왔습니다. 그녀는 “우리 안에서 신음하던 그 깊고 깊은 고통” 을 이야기하고는, 곧 “그 어린 생명을 통해 하나님께서 자신의 사랑의 사역을 우리 가슴에 얼마나 깊이 새겨놓으셨는지요! 그것이 얼마나 능력 있는 삶이었는지요!” 라고 말했습니다.

능력이 있다니요? 그녀가 어떻게 그렇게 말할 수가 있었을까요?

이 가족의 소중한 아기는 그들과 우리에게 우리는 모든 일에 하나님께 의지해야 한다는 것을 보여주었습니다. 특히 일이 아주 잘못될 때 더욱 그래야 합니다! 힘들지만 위로가 되는
진리는 바로 하나님께서 고통 가운데 우리를 만나주신다는 것입니다. 하나님은 아들을 잃은 슬픔을 아십니다.

가장 깊은 고통 속에서 우리는 다윗이 자신의 고통 가운데 기록한 그의 노래들을 보게 됩니다. “나의 영혼이 번민하고 종일토록 마음에 근심하기를 어느 때까지 하리이까”(시편 13:2)라고 그는 묻습니다. “나의 눈을 밝히소서 두렵건대 내가 사망의 잠을 잘까 하오며”(3절). 다윗은 하나님께 그의 가장 큰 질문들을 물어볼 수도 있었지만, “나는 오직 주의 사랑을 의지하였사오니 나의 마음은 주의 구원을 기뻐하리이다”(5절) 라고 노래합니다.

우리에게 가장 비극적인 일이 생겼을 때 오직 하나님만이 궁극적인 의미를 가져다주십니다.

하나님은 우리가 가장 작다고 생각하는 것으로 가장 큰 일을 하실 수 있다.

Powerful Baby

The first time I saw him, I cried. He looked like a perfect newborn asleep in his crib. But we knew he would never wake up. Not until he was in the arms of Jesus.

He clung to life for several months. Then his mother told us of his death in a heart-wrenching email. She wrote of “that deep, deep pain that groans inside you.” Then she said, “How deeply God carved His work of love into our hearts through that little life! What a powerful life it was!”

Powerful? How could she say that? This family’s precious little boy showed them—and us—that we must depend on God for everything. Especially when things go horribly wrong! The hard yet comforting truth is that God meets us in our pain. He knows the grief of losing a Son.

In our deepest pain, we turn to the songs of David because he writes out of his own grief. “How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?” he asked (PS. 13:2). “Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death” (V. 3). Yet David could give his biggest questions to God. “But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation” (V. 5).

무명으로 살기

오래 전에 ‘작가’라는 잡지에서 오려낸 제인 욜른의 “무명으로 일하기”라는 수필은 내가 자주 읽다보니 이제 많이 낡았습니다. 그녀는 말합니다. “가장 훌륭한 작가들은 정말 진심으로 그들의 필명을 무명으로 해서 쓰는 것을 열망하는 사람들입니다. 쓰인 이야기가 중요하지 이야기를 말하는 사람이 중요한 것이 아닙니다.”

우리는 우리를 위해 그분의 생명을 주신 구주 예수님에 관해 이야기합니다. 다른 믿는 사람들과 함께 우리는 주님을 위해 살며 주님의 사랑을 다른 사람들에게 나누어줍니다.

로마서 12:3-21에는 예수님을 따르는 사람으로서 서로의 관계 속에 스며있어야 할 겸손과 사랑의 태도에 대해 묘사되어 있습니다. “마땅히 생각할 그 이상의 생각을 품지 말고 오직 하나님께서 각 사람에게 나누어주신 믿음의 분량대로 지혜롭게 생각하라......형제를 사랑하여 서로 우애하고 존경하기를 서로 먼저하며”(3,10절).

과거에 이룬 일에 대한 우리의 자부심이 다른 사람의 재능을 못 보게 할 수 있고, 오만함이 미래를 망칠 수 있습니다.

예수님의 길을 예비하는 사명을 가졌던 세례요한은 “그는 흥하여야 하겠고 나는 쇠하여야 하리라”(요한복음 3:30) 라고 말했습니다.

그것은 우리 모두가 새겨야 할 좋은 좌우명입니다.

Living Anonymously

My well-worn and often-read copy of Jane Yolen’s essay “Working Up to Anon” (Anonymous) was clipped from The Writer magazine many years ago. “The best writers,” she says, “are the ones who really, in their heart of hearts, aspire to the byline Anon. The story told is important, not the storyteller.”

The story we tell is about Jesus, the Savior, who gave His life for us. Together with other believers we live for Him and share His love with others.

Romans 12:3–21 describes the attitude of humility and love that should permeate our relationships with each other as followers of Jesus. “Don’t cherish exaggerated ideas of yourself or your importance, but try to have a sane estimate of your capabilities by the light of the faith that God has given to you all. . . . Let us have real warm affection for one another as between [family], and a willingness to let the other [person] have the credit” (VV. 3, 10 J. B. PHILLIPS NEW TESTAMENT ).

Pride in our past accomplishments can blind us to the gifts of others. Arrogance can poison the future.

John the Baptist, whose mission was to pave the way for Jesus, said, “He must become greater; I must become less” (JOHN 3:30).

이분이 누구이신가?

“책상에 있는 것을 모두 치우고 종이와 연필을 꺼내세요.” 이 말은 학교 다닐 때 “시험시간”을 알리는 무서운 말이었습니다.

마가복음 4장에서 우리는 예수님의 하루가 바닷가에서 가르치시는 것으로 시작되어(1절) 바다에서 시험을 치르시는 것으로 끝나는 것을( 3 5 절 ) 봅니다. 강단으로 사용되었던 배가 예수님과 그의 제자들을 바다 건너편으로 옮기는데 사용되었습니다. 바다를 건너는 도중에 (예수님은 피곤하여 배 뒤편에서 잠이 드셨습니다) 그들은 광풍을 맞이하게 되었습니다(37절). 흠뻑 젖은 제자들은 “선생님이여 우리가 죽게 된 것을 돌보지 아니하시나이까”(38절)라고 말하며 예수님을 깨웠습니다. 그때 그 일이 일어났습니다. 그날 일찍이 군중들에게 “들으라”라고 권면하셨던 분이(3절) 바람에게 “잠잠하라 고요하라” (39절)고 간단하면서도 강력한 명령을 내리셨습니다.

바람이 잠잠해지자 두려움으로 가득 찬 제자들이 경외하는 목소리로 서로 “이분이 누구이신가?”(41절)라고 말했습니다. 좋은 질문이기는 했지만, 그들이 예수님이 하나님의 아들이라고 솔직하고 정확하게 결론을 내리는 데에는 시간이 걸렸습니다. 오늘날에도 사람들이 진지하고 정직하게, 그리고 열린 마음으로 묻고 경험해본다면 똑같은 결론에 이르게 됩니다. 그분은 경청해야 할 선생 이상의, 경배 받으셔야 할 하나님이십니다.

Who Is This?

“Remove everything from your desks, take out a piece of paper and pencil.” When I was a student these dreaded words announced that “test time” had come.

In Mark 4, we read that Jesus’s day, which started with teaching by the seaside (V. 1), ended with a time of testing on the sea (V. 35). The boat that had been used as a teaching platform was used to transport Jesus and a handful of His followers to the other side of the sea. During the journey (while an exhausted Jesus slept in the back of the boat), they encountered a swirling storm (V. 37). Drenched disciples woke Jesus with the words, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (V. 38). Then it happened. The One who had exhorted the crowds to “Listen!” earlier in the day (V. 3), uttered a simple, powerful command to the winds of nature—“Quiet! Be still!” (V. 39).

The wind obeyed and the wonder of fear-filled disciples was displayed with the words, “Who is this?” (V. 41). The question was a good one but it would take them a while to honestly and correctly conclude that Jesus was God’s Son. Sincere, honest, open-hearted questions and experience lead people to the same conclusion today. He is more than a teacher to listen to; He is the God to be worshiped. - ARTHUR JACKSON
