불완전하지만 사랑받는

일본에서 식료품들은 아주 정갈하게 가공되고 포장됩니다. 식료품들은 맛도 좋아야 하지만 보기에도 좋아야 합니다. 때때로 내가 음식을 사는 것인지 겉포장을 사는 것인지 궁금할 때도 있습니다! 우수한 품질을 강조하는 일본이기에 조금이라도 결함이 있는 물건들은 종종 버려집니다. 그러나 최근 몇 년 사이, 와케아리 상품들이 인기를 얻고 있습니다. 와케아리란 일본어로 “이유가 있다”라는 뜻입니다. 이런 상품들(예를 들어 금이 간 쌀 과자)은 버려지지 않고 “이유가 있기 때문에” 싼 가격에 팔립니다.

일본에 사는 친구는, 와케아리가 누가 생각해도 결점이 있는 사람들을 일컫는 유행어이기도 하다고 말합니다.

예수님은 사회가 배척하는 와케아리들을 포함한 모든 사람들을 사랑하십니다. 죄 많은 삶을 살던 한 여인이 예수님이 바리새인의 집에서 식사하고 계심을 알고, 그 곳에 가서 예수님 뒤로
그분의 발 옆에 무릎을 꿇고 울었습니다(누가복음 7:37-38). 바리새인은 여인을 “죄인”(39절)이라고 불렀지만, 예수님은 여인을 받아들이셨습니다. 주님은 여인에게 부드럽게 말씀하셨고, 여인이 죄 사함 받았음을 알려주셨습니다(48절).

예수님은 당신과 나를 포함한 불완전한 와케아리 같은 사람들을 사랑하십니다. 우리를 향한 예수님의 가장 큰 사랑의 증표는 “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으신”(로마서 5:8) 것입니다. 주님의 사랑을 받은 사람으로서, 우리가 결점이 있는 주변 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 전하는 통로가 되어, 그들도 자신들의 불완전함에도 불구하고 하나님의 사랑을 받을 수 있음을 알 수 있게 되기를 소원합니다.

Imperfect, Yet Loved

In Japan, food products are immaculately prepared and packaged. Not only must they taste good but they must look good too. Often I wonder if I am purchasing the food or the packaging! Because of the Japanese emphasis on good quality, products with slight defects are often discarded. However, in recent years wakeari products have gained popularity. Wakeari means “there is a reason” in Japanese. These products are not thrown away but are sold at a cheap price “for a reason”—for example, a crack in a rice cracker.

My friend who lives in Japan tells me that wakeari is also a catchphrase for people who are obviously less than perfect.

Jesus loves all people—including the wakeari who society casts aside. When a woman who had lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at a Pharisee’s house, she went there and knelt behind Jesus at His feet, weeping (LUKE 7:37–38). The Pharisee labeled her “a sinner” (V. 39), but Jesus accepted her. He spoke gently to her, assuring her that her sins were forgiven (V. 48).

Jesus loves imperfect, wakeari people—which includes you and me. And the greatest demonstration of His love for us is that “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (ROM. 5:8). As recipients of His love, may we be conduits of His love to the flawed people around us so they too may know that they can receive God’s love despite their imperfections. ALBERT LEE

공감의 능력

알70아이(R70i) 나이 체험복을 입으면 곧바로 40살이 많아진 것처럼 느끼면서 시력손상, 청력상실, 그리고 신체 움직임의 제약을 경험하게 됩니다. 나이 체험복은 환자에 대한 간병인들의 이해를 돕기 위해 만들어졌습니다. ‘월스트리트 저널’ 통신원 제프리 파울러는 이 옷을 입어보고 이렇게 썼습니다. “잊을 수 없으며 때로는 고통스러웠던 이 경험은 늙는다는 것에 대해 깨닫게 해주었을 뿐만 아니라, 가상현실 장비가 어떻게 우리에게 공감을 가르쳐주고 주변 세상에 대한 우리의 인식을 형성할 수 있는지 조명해주었습니다.”

공감이란 다른 사람의 감정을 이해하고 함께 나눌 수 있는 능력입니다. 예수님을 따르는 사람들에 대한 박해가 심했던 시기에 히브리서 기자는 동료 신자들에게 이렇게 독려했습니다. “너희도 함께 갇힌 것 같이 갇힌자를 생각하고 너희도 몸을 가졌은즉 학대 받는 자를 생각하라”(13:3).

이것이야말로 정확히 우리의 구주께서 우리를 위해 하신 일입니다. 예수님은 우리와 같은 모습이 되셨습니다. “범사에 형제들과 같이 되심이 마땅하도다......백성의 죄를 속량하려 하심이라 그가 시험을 받아 고난을 당하셨은즉 시험 받는 자들을 능히 도우실 수 있느니라”(2:17-18).

우리와 같이 되셨던 예수 그리스도는 다른 사람들이 어려울 때 “[우리가] 그들과 함께 있는 것 같이” 그들과 함께 서 있으라고 요구하십니다.

The Power of Empathy

Put on the R70i Age Suit and you immediately feel forty years older as you experience impaired vision, hearing loss, and reduced mobility. The Age Suit was designed to help caregivers better understand their patients. Wall Street Journal correspondent Geoffrey Fowler wore one and wrote, “The unforgettable, and at times distressing, experience shed light not just on aging, but also how virtual reality equipment can teach empathy and shape our perceptions of the world around us.”

Empathy is the power to understand and share the feelings of another. During a time of severe persecution against the followers of Jesus, the writer of Hebrews urged fellow believers to “continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering” (13:3).

This is exactly what our Savior has done for us. Jesus was made like us, “fully human in every way . . . that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted” (2:17–18).

Christ the Lord, who became like us, calls us to stand with others “as if [we] were together with them” during their time of need. - DAVID MCCASLAND

능력의 하나님

나는 어느 날 바닷가에서, 카이트 서퍼들이 바람의 힘으로 움직이면서 물결을 따라 튀어 오르고 하는 모습을 즐겁게 구경하고 있었습니다. 그 중 한 명이 해변으로 다가왔을 때, 나는 그에게 실제로 해 보니까 카이트 서핑이 보이는 것처럼 어렵냐고 물었습니다. 그는 “아니요. 바람의 힘을 이용하기 때문에 실제로는 보통 서핑보다 쉽습니다.”라고 대답했습니다.

그 후 바닷가를 걸으며 서퍼들의 원동력이 될 뿐만 아니라 머리카락이 내 얼굴을 때리게 하는 바람의 능력에 대해 생각하다가, 문득 창조주 우리 하나님이 경이롭다는 생각에 잠시 멈춰 섰습니다. 구약의 아모스서에서 말하는 것처럼, “산들을 지으며 바람을 창조하신” 주님은 “아침을 어둡게” 하실 수 있는 분이십니다 (13절).

이 선지자를 통해 주님은 자기 백성들을 다시 부르실 때 그들에게 주님의 능력을 상기시켜 주셨습니다. 백성들이 주님께 순종하지 않았기 때문에 주님은 백성들에게 자신을 드러낼 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다 (13절). 비록 여기서는 주님의 심판을 보지만, 우리는 성경의 다른 곳에서는 우리를 구원하시기 위해 그분의 아들을 보내시는 하나님의 희생적인 사랑에 대해 말하고 있음을 알고 있습니다(요한복음 3:16 참조).

영국 남단에서 이렇게 미풍이 부는 날, 바람의 능력은 나에게 엄청난 능력의 주님을 상기시켜주었습니다. 만일 당신도 오늘 그 바람을 느낀다면, 잠깐 멈춰 서서 우리의 전능하신 하나님을 깊이 생각해보는 게 어떻겠습니까?

Our Powerful God

One day by the seaside, I delighted in watching some kite surfers as they bounced along the water, moved by the force of the wind. When one came to shore, I asked him if the experience was as difficult as it looked. “No,” he said, “It’s actually easier than regular surfing because you harness the power of the wind.”

Afterward as I walked by the sea, thinking about the wind’s ability not only to propel the surfers but also to whip my hair into my face, I paused to wonder at our God the Creator. As we see in the Old Testament book of Amos, He who “forms the mountains” and “creates the wind” can turn “dawn to darkness” (V. 13).

Through this prophet, the Lord reminded His people of His power as He called them back to Himself. Because they had not obeyed Him, He said He would reveal Himself to them (V. 13). Although we see His judgment here, we know from elsewhere in the Bible of His sacrificial love in sending His Son to save us (SEE JOHN 3:16).

The power of the wind on this breezy day in the South of England reminded me of the sheer immensity of the Lord. If you feel the wind today, why not stop and ponder our all-powerful God? - AMY BOUCHER PYE

더 잘 알기

해외에서 입양한 아들을 집으로 데리고 왔을 때, 사랑을 듬뿍 주고 싶었습니다. 또, 아들이 이전 몇 달 동안 영양 부족이었기 때문에 특히 영양가 많은 음식을 주고 싶었습니다. 상담 전문가들을 포함한 우리의 최선의 노력에도 불구하고, 아들은 아주 조금 밖에 자라지 않았습니다. 거의 3년이 지난 후에야, 아들에게 일부 음식물에 대한 심각한 과민증이 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 식단에서 그런 음식들을 뺀 후에, 아들은 단 몇 달 사이에 5인치나 자랐습니다. 얼마나 오랫동안 나도 모르게 아들의 성장을 저해하는 음식을 먹였을까 라는 생각으로 슬퍼하면서도, 나는 아들의 건강이 빠르게 나아진 것이 기뻤습니다!

오랫동안 성전 안에서 잃어버렸던 율법책을 발견했을 때 요시야도 이와 비슷하게 느끼지 않았을까 생각합니다. 내가 의도하지 않게 내 아들의 성장을 막은 것을 슬퍼했던 것처럼, 요시야도 백성들을 위한 하나님의 가장 완전하고 최상인 계획을 무심하게 놓쳤던 것을 슬퍼했습니다(열왕기하 22:11). 그는 주님 보시기에 옳은 것을 하고 칭찬을 받았지만(2절), 율법을 찾은 후에 어떻게 하나님을 경외하는지에 대해 더 잘 배웠습니다. 그는 새롭게 발견한 지식으로 하나님이 가르쳐주신 대로(23:22-23) 백성들이 하나님을 다시 섬기도록 인도했습니다.

Knowing Better

When we brought our adoptive son home from overseas, I was eager to shower him with love and provide what he had lacked over the preceding months, especially quality food, since he had a nutritional deficit. But despite our best efforts, including consulting specialists, he grew very little. After nearly three years, we learned he had some severe food intolerances. After removing those items from his diet, he grew five inches in just a few months. While I grieved at how long I’d unwittingly fed him foods that impaired his growth, I rejoiced at this surge in his health!

I suspect Josiah felt similarly when the Book of the Law was discovered after having been lost in the temple for years. Just as I grieved having unintentionally hindered my son’s growth, Josiah grieved having ignorantly missed God’s fullest and best intentions for His people (2 KINGS 22:11). Although he is commended for doing what was right in the eyes of the Lord (V. 2), he learned better how to honor God after finding the Law. With his newfound knowledge, he led the people to worship again as God had instructed them (23:22–23).

As we learn through the Bible how to honor Him, we may grieve the ways we’ve fallen short of God’s will for us. Yet we can be comforted that He heals and restores us, and leads us gently into deeper understanding. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

데니즈는 교회에서 상처 받은 한 젊은 여인을 만나자, 측은한 마음이 들어 할 수 있으면 그녀를 도와주기로 결심했습니다. 데니즈는 매주 시간을 내어 그녀를 상담해주고 기도해주었습니다. 데니즈는 그녀의 멘토가 되었습니다. 그러나 몇몇 교회 지도자들이 데니즈의 노력을 알아차리지 못하고, 교회의 다른 사역자를 그 여인의 멘토로 맡기기로 결정했습니다. 그들은 아무도 그녀를 돌보고 있지 않는 것 같다고 말했습니다.

데니즈가 인정을 바란 것은 아니었지만, 조금은 낙담하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 그녀는 “마치 내가 아무것도 하지 않은 것 같았어요.” 라고 내게 말했습니다.

아마도 그래서 예수님께서 한 예를 들어 “은밀한 중에 보시는 너의 아버지께서 갚으시도록” 구제를 “은밀하게” 하라고 말씀하셨는지도 모르겠습니다(마태복음 6:4). 우리는 다른 사람의 인정과 칭찬을 기대할 필요 없이, 우리가 충실히 주님과 다른 사람들을 섬길 때 하나님이 아신다는 것으로 기운을 낼 수 있습니다.

God Knows

When Denise met a hurting young woman in her church, her heart went out to her and she decided to see if she could help. Every week she spent time counseling her and praying with her. Denise became her mentor. However, some church leaders didn’t notice Denise’s efforts and decided to assign a church staff member to mentor the woman. No one, they commented, seemed to be taking care of her.

While she was not expecting any credit, Denise couldn’t help but feel a little discouraged. “It’s as if I wasn’t doing anything at all,” she told me.

One day, however, the young woman told Denise how grateful she was for her comfort. Denise felt encouraged. It was as if God was telling her, “I know you’re there for her.” Denise still meets with the woman regularly.

Sometimes, we feel unappreciated when our efforts don’t get recognized. Scripture, however, reminds us that God knows what we’re doing. He sees what others don’t. And it pleases Him when we serve for His sake—not for man’s praise.

Perhaps that’s why Jesus gave us an example by telling us to do our giving “in secret,” so that “your Father, who sees what is done . . . will reward you” (MATT. 6:4). We need not look to others for recognition and praise; we can take heart that God knows when we’re faithful in serving Him and others. - LESLIE KOH

사람으로서

가끔은 법집행에 비협조적인 어떤 동네에서 한 보안관이 그의 역할이 무엇이냐고 질문을 받았을 때, 그는 배지를 들이밀거나 사무실 내 계급을 제시하지 않았습니다. 그보다는 그는 “우리는 위험에 처한 사람들과 함께 일하는 사람들입니다.” 라고 대답했습니다.

그가 주위의 사람들과 동등하다고 겸손히 말하는 모습은, 로마의 박해로 고통 받던 1세기 그리스도인들에게 보낸 베드로의 편지의 글을 생각나게 해줍니다. 베드로는 “너희가 다 마음을 같이하여 동정하며 형제를 사랑하며 불쌍히 여기며 겸손하라”(베드로전서 3:8)고 지시합니다. 아마도 베드로는 위기에 처한 사람들을 대하는 최선의 방법은 사람으로서, 우리 모두가 같다는 사실을 의식하는 것이라고 말하고 있는 것 같습니다. 결국, 하나님 그분이 우리를 돕기 위해 자신의 아들을 보내 인간이 되게 하신 일과 같은 것이 아닐까요? (빌립보서 2:7).

우리가 타락한 마음의 중심만을 응시한다면, 인간의 지위를 경멸하고 싶은 유혹이 들게 됩니다. 그러나 만약 우리의 인간됨이 이 세상에서 우리가 드리는 예물의 일부라고 생각해보면 어떨까요? 예수님은 우리가 모두 같은 존재라는 것을 인식하는 종의 모습을 통해 우리가 어떻게 완전히 인간답게 살아갈 수 있는지를 가르쳐주십니다. 하나님께서 우리를 “인간”으로 만드셨습니다. 우리는 하나님의 형상대로 창조되었고, 그분의 무조건적인 사랑으로 속량되었습니다.

오늘날 우리는 여러 가지 어려움에 처한 사람들을 반드시 만나게 되어 있습니다. 우리가 위기에 처한 다른 사람들과 함께 일하는 같은 사람으로서 겸손하게 반응할 때, 우리가 만들어낼지도 모를 차이를 상상해보십시오.

Being Human Beings

When asked to define his role in a community that was sometimes uncooperative with law enforcement, a sheriff didn’t flash his badge or respond with the rank of his office. Rather he offered, “We are human beings who work with human beings in crisis.”

His humility—his stated equality with his fellow human beings—reminds me of Peter’s words when writing to first-century Christians suffering under Roman persecution. Peter directs: “All of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble” (1 PETER 3:8). Perhaps Peter was saying that the best response to humans in crisis is to be human, to be aware that we are all the same. After all, isn’t that what God Himself did when He sent His Son—became human in order to help us? (PHIL. 2:7).

Gazing only at the core of our fallen hearts, it’s tempting to disdain our human status. But what if we consider our humanness to be part of our offering in our world? Jesus teaches us how to live fully human, as servants recognizing we are all the same. “Human” is how God made us, created in His image and redeemed by His unconditional love.

Today we’re sure to encounter folks in various struggles. Imagine the difference we might make when we respond humbly—as fellow humans who work together with other humans in crisis. - ELISA MORGAN

마음의 진정한 안식처

우리는 몇 년째 웨스트 하이랜드 화이트 테리어 애완견을 키우고 있습니다. “웨스티”는 작고 다부진 개의 종자로 오소리 굴을 파고들어가 굴속에 있는 “적”과 싸우도록 품종 개량되었습니다. 우리 개는 그 기원으로부터 많은 세대가 지났지만, 오랜 세월 동안의 번식을 거쳐 심어진 그 본능이 그대로 남아 있습니다. 한 번은 우리 집 뒷마당 바위 아래에 있는 어떤 “생물” 에 집착하게 되었습니다. 그 어떤 것도 그 개를 단념시키지 못한 채, 개는 땅을 파고 또 파서 바위 아래로 몇 피트까지 터널을 만들었습니다.

이제 이 질문을 생각해봅시다. 왜 우리 인간들은 추구하고, 추구하고, 또 추구할까요? 왜 우리는 한 번도 오른 적이 없는 산을 오르고, 수직 경사에 가까운 곳에서 스키를 탈까요? 왜 가장 어렵고 위험한 급류타기를 하고, 자연의 힘에 도전할까요? 모험과 즐거움에 대한 욕망 때문이기도 하지만, 사실은 그 이상입니다. 그것은 우리 안에 심겨져 있는 하나님을 향한 본능 때문입니다. 우리는 하나님을 찾고 싶어 하지 않을 수 없습니다.

하지만 당연히 우리는 그것을 모릅니다. 우리는 다만 우리가 무언가를 갈망한다는 것을 알 뿐입니다. 마크 트웨인은 말했습니다. “당신이 원하는 것이 무엇인지 당신은 모릅니다. 하지만 당신은 죽도록 그것을 원합니다.”

하나님은 우리 마음의 진정한 안식처입니다. 교부 어거스틴이 가장 유명한 인용문에서 말하고 있는 것처럼, “주님, 주님은 당신 자신을 위해 우리를 지으셨습니다. 우리 마음이 주님 안에서 쉴 때까지는 우리 마음에 쉼이 없습니다.”

그러면 마음은 무엇입니까? 그것은 오직 하나님만이 채울 수 있는 우리 안의 깊은 공허입니다.

The Heart’s True Home

We had a West Highland Terrier for a number of years. “Westies” are tough little dogs, bred to tunnel into badger holes and engage the “enemy” in its lair. Our Westie was many generations removed from her origins, but she still retained that instinct, put into her through years of breeding. On one occasion she became obsessed by some “critter” under a rock in our backyard. Nothing could dissuade her. She dug and dug until she tunneled several feet under the rock.

Now consider this question: Why do we as humans pursue, pursue, pursue? Why must we climb unclimbed mountains, ski near-vertical slopes? Run the most difficult and dangerous rapids, challenge the forces of nature? Part of it is a desire for adventure and enjoyment, but it’s much more. It’s an instinct for God that has been implanted in us. We cannot not want to find God.

We don’t know that, of course. We only know that we long for something. “You don’t know what it is you want,” Mark Twain said, “but you want it so much you could almost die.”

God is our heart’s true home. As church father Augustine said in that most famous quotation: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

And what is the heart? A deep void within us that only God can fill. - DAVID ROPER

추수와 감사

수천 년 전, 하나님은 모세에게 직접 말씀하셔서 주님의 백성들을 위해 새로운 축제를 제정하셨습니다. 출애굽기 23장 16절의 모세의 기록에 따르면, 하나님은 “맥추절을 지키라 이는 네가 수고하여 밭에 뿌린 것의 첫 열매를 거둠이니라”라고 말씀하셨습니다.

오늘날 온 세계의 나라들이 땅의 풍성함을 기념하며 비슷한 일을 합니다. 가나에서는 추수 행사로 얌 축제를 합니다. 브라질에서는 감사절이 식량으로 주신 농작물에 대해 감사드리는 때입니다. 중국에는 중추절이 있고, 미국과 캐나다에는 추수감사절이 있습니다.

추수를 기념하는 바른 목적을 이해하기 위해 홍수 직후의 노아를 살펴봅시다. 하나님은 노아와 그의 가족, 그리고 우리들에게 우리가 이 땅위에 번성하도록 하나님께서 공급해주시겠다고
말씀하셨습니다. 이 땅 위에 각 계절이 있으며, 낮과 밤이 있고, “심음과 거둠”이 있게 될 것이었습니다 (창세기 8:22). 우리를 살 수 있게 해주는 수확에 대한 우리의 감사는 하나님 한 분에게만 드려져야 합니다.

당신이 어디에 살고 있고 어떻게 땅의 풍성함을 축하하는지 상관없이, 오늘 하나님께 감사를 표현하는 시간을 가지십시오. 왜냐 하면 그분의 거대한 창조적인 설계 없이는 우리는 기념할 만한 어떤 수확도 거두지 못할 것이기 때문입니다.

Harvest and Thanksgiving

Several thousand years ago, God spoke directly to Moses and instituted a new festival for His people. In Exodus 23:16, according to Moses’s record, God said, “Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field.”

Today countries around the world do something similar by celebrating the land’s bounty. In Ghana, the people celebrate the Yam Festival as a harvest event. In Brazil, Dia de Acao de Gracas is a time to be grateful for the crops that yielded their food. In China, there is the Mid-Autumn (Moon) Festival. In the United States and Canada: Thanksgiving.

To understand the fitting goal of a harvest celebration, we visit Noah right after the flood. God reminded Noah and his family—and us—of His provision for our flourishing existence on the earth. Earth would have seasons, daylight and darkness and “seedtime and harvest” (GEN. 8:22). Our gratitude for the harvest, which sustains us, goes to God alone.

No matter where you live or how you celebrate your land’s bounty, take time today to express gratitude to God—for we would have no harvest to celebrate without His grand creative design. - DAVE BRANON

즐겁게 소리쳐라

예전에 정기적으로 출석할 교회를 찾고 있을 때, 한 친구가 자기가 다니는 교회의 예배에 나를 초대했습니다. 예배 인도자는 내가 특별히 좋아했던 찬송으로 회중을 인도하고 있었습니다. 그래서 나는 대학 때 합창단 지휘자의 “자신을 내던져라!”는 조언을 기억하며, 활기차게 찬송을 불렀습니다.

찬송 후에, 친구의 남편이 나를 돌아보며 “당신의 노래 소리 정말 크더군요.”라고 말했습니다. 이 말은 칭찬으로 한 것이 아니었습니다! 그 이후 나는 스스로를 의식하면서 내 노래를 점검했으며, 주위에 있는 사람들보다 더 부드럽게 노래했는지 확인하고, 주변 사람들이 내 노래로 나를 판단하지는 않았는지 늘 궁금해 했습니다.

그러던 어느 주일, 내 옆 좌석에 앉은 한 여성의 찬양에 주목하게 되었습니다. 그녀는 남을 의식하는 기색 없이 경배하며 찬양하는 것 같았습니다. 그녀의 찬양은 다윗이 자신의 삶에서 보여준 열정적이고 마음에서 우러나오는 예배를 생각나게 해주었습니다. 사실 시편 98편에서 다윗은 “온 땅이” 예배 가운데 “소리 내어 즐겁게 찬송”해야 한다고 제안하고 있습니다(4절).

시편 98편 1절은 “[하나님께서] 기이한 일을 행하셨다”는 것을 우리에게 상기시켜 주면서, 우리가 왜 기쁨으로 찬양해야 하는지를말해줍니다. 그 시편을 통하여, 다윗은 기이한 일들을 이렇게 하나하나 열거하고 있습니다. 모든 나라들을 향한 하나님의 신실하심과 공의로움, 그리고 하나님의 자비와 구원. 하나님이 어떤 분이시고 어떤 일을 하셨는지 깊이 생각해보면 우리의
마음이 찬양으로 가득 차오를 수 있습니다.

당신의 삶에서 하나님이 하신 “기이한 일들”은 무엇입니까? 추수감사절은 하나님의 놀라운 일들을 생각해보고 하나님께 감사를 드리기에 아주 좋은 때입니다. 목소리를 높여 찬양하십시오!

Make a Joyful Noise

Back when I was searching for a church to attend regularly, a friend invited me to a service at her church. The worship leaders led the congregation in a song I particularly loved. So I sang with gusto, remembering my college choir director’s advice to “Project!”

After the song, my friend’s husband turned to me and said, “You really sang loud.” This remark was not intended as a compliment! After that, I self-consciously monitored my singing, making sure I sang softer than those around me and always wondering if the people around me judged my singing.

But one Sunday, I noticed the singing of a woman in the pew beside me. She seemed to sing with adoration, without a trace of self-consciousness. Her worship reminded me of the enthusiastic, spontaneous worship that David demonstrated in his life. In Psalm 98, in fact, David suggests that “all the earth” should “burst into jubilant song” in worship (V. 4).

Verse one of Psalm 98 tells us why we should worship joyfully, reminding us that “[God] has done marvelous things.” Throughout the psalm, David recounts these marvelous things: God’s faithfulness and justice to all nations, His mercy, and salvation. Dwelling on who God is and what He’s done can fill our hearts with praise.

헬리콥터 씨앗

우리 아이들이 어렸을 때 이웃집에 있는 은색 단풍나무에서 떨어지는 “헬리콥터 씨앗”을 잡는 것을 좋아했습니다. 각 씨앗은 날개를 닮아서, 늦은 봄날 헬리콥터 날개처럼 빙글빙글 돌면서 땅에 떨어집니다. 씨앗의 목적은 하늘을 나는데 있지 않고, 땅에 떨어져 나무로 자라는데 있습니다.

예수님이 십자가에 못 박히시기 전에 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다......한 알의 밀알이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺느니라”(요한복음 12:23-24).

예수님의 제자들은 예수님이 메시아로서 영광 받으시길 원했지만, 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 것은 자기 생명을 내어주심으로 우리가 그를 믿는 믿음을 통해 용서 받고 변화되도록 하기 위해서였습니다. 예수님의 제자들처럼, 우리도 우리에게 말씀하시는 예수님의 말씀을 듣습니다. “자기의 생명을 사랑하는 자는 잃어버릴 것이요 이 세상에서 자기의 생명을 미워하는 자는 영생하도록 보전하리라 사람이 나를 섬기려면 나를 따르라 나 있는 곳에 나를 섬기는 자도 거기 있으리니 사람이 나를 섬기면 내 아버지께서 그를 귀히 여기시리라”(25-26절).

헬리콥터 씨앗은 우리를 돌아가신 구주 예수님의 기적으로 향하게 하여 우리로 주님을 위해 살 수 있도록 만들어줍니다.

Helicopter Seeds

When our children were young, they loved trying to catch the “helicopter seeds” that fell from our neighbor’s silver maple trees. Each seed resembles a wing. In late spring they twirl to the ground like a helicopter’s rotor blades. The seeds’ purpose is not to fly, but to fall to earth and grow into trees.

Before Jesus was crucified, He told His followers, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. . . . [U]nless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds” (JOHN 12:23–24).

While Jesus’s disciples wanted Him to be honored as the Messiah, He came to give His life so we could be forgiven and transformed through faith in Him. As Jesus’s followers, we hear His words, “Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me” (VV. 25–26).

Helicopter seeds can point us to the miracle of Jesus, the Savior, who died that we might live for Him. - DAVID MCCASLAND
