유일한 이름

클레오파트라, 갈릴레오, 셰익스피어, 엘비스, 펠레. 이들은 너무 잘 알려져 있어서 이름만 대면 그들이 누군지 바로 알 수 있습니다. 그들은 어떤 사람들이었고 무엇을 했는지 기록되어 역사에 중요한 인물로 남아있습니다. 하지만 이들, 그리고 그 어떤 이름보다도 훨씬 더 높은 다른 이름이 있습니다!

하나님의 아들이 이 세상에 태어나기 전, 천사는 마리아와 요셉에게 아이의 이름을 ‘예수’로 지으라고 했습니다. 이는 “그가 자기 백성을 그들의 죄에서 구원할 자” (마태복음 1:21)이시며, “그가......지극히 높으신 이의 아들이라 일컬어질 것”(누가복음 1:32) 이기 때문이었습니다. 예수님은 유명인으로 오신 것이 아니라 자기를 낮추셔서 십자가에서 죽으실 종으로 오셨습니다. 그러므로 누구든지 주님을 영접하면 용서를 받고 죄의 권세에서 자유로워질 수 있습니다.

바울 사도는 이렇게 기록했습니다. “하나님이 그를 지극히 높여 모든 이름 위에 뛰어난 이름을 주사 하늘에 있는 자들과 땅에 있는 자들과 땅 아래에 있는 자들로 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고 모든 입으로 예수 그리스도를 주라 시인하여 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨느니라”(빌립보서 2:9-11).

가장 기쁠 때, 그리고 매우 궁핍할 때, 우리가 붙들어야 할 이름은 바로 ‘예수’입니다. 주님은 우리를 결코 버려두지 않으십니다. 그리고 주님의 사랑은 영원합니다.

One Name

Cleopatra, Galileo, Shakespeare, Elvis, Pelé. They are all so well known that they need only one name to be recognized. They have remained prominent in history because of who they were and what they did. But there is another name that stands far above these or any other name!

Before the Son of God was born into this world, the angel told Mary and Joseph to name Him Jesus because “he will save his people from their sins” (MATTHEW 1:21), and “he . . . will be called the Son of the Most High” (LUKE 1:32). Jesus didn’t come as a celebrity but as a servant who humbled Himself and died on the cross so that anyone who receives Him can be forgiven and freed from the power of sin.

The apostle Paul wrote, “God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (PHILIPPIANS 2:9–11).

In our times of greatest joy and our deepest need, the name we cling to is Jesus . He will never leave us, and His love will not fail. DAVID C. MCCASLAND

동방박사의 선물

한 젊은 부부는 부유하지 못했지만 서로 많이 사랑했습니다. 크리스마스가 다가오자 두 사람은 서로가 얼마나 아끼는지를 보여줄 수 있는 선물을 찾느라 고심했습니다. 결국 델라는 크리스마스이브에 자신의 무릎까지 오는 긴 머리카락을 팔아서 할아버지와 아버지로부터 물려받은 짐의 시계에 연결할 백금 시계 줄을 샀습니다. 하지만 짐은 델라의 머리카락을 위해 비싼 머리빗 세트를 사느라 그 시계를 팔고 말았습니다.

작가 오 헨리는 이 부부의 이야기를 ‘동방박사의 선물’이라고 불렀습니다. 이 작품에서 그는 비록 그들의 선물이 쓸모없게 되고 크리스마스 아침에 어리석게 보이게 했을지 몰라도, 그들의 사랑이 그들을 선물을 주고받는 사람들 중 가장 지혜로운 자들로 만들어주었음을 보여주었습니다.

The Gift of the Magi

A young married couple had more love than money. As Christmas neared, both struggled to find a gift that would show how much they cared for the other. Finally, on Christmas Eve, Della sold her long, knee-length hair to buy Jim a platinum chain for the watch he’d inherited from his father and grandfather. Jim, however, had just sold the watch to buy a set of expensive combs for Della’s hair.

Author O. Henry called the couple’s story The Gift of the Magi. His creation suggests that even though their gifts became useless and may have caused them to look foolish on Christmas morning, their love made them among the wisest of those who give gifts.

The wise men of the first Christmas story also could have looked foolish to some as they arrived in Bethlehem with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (MATTHEW 2:11). They weren’t Jewish. They were outsiders, Gentiles, who didn’t realize how much they would disturb the peace of Jerusalem by asking about a newly born king of the Jews (V 2).

As with Jim and Della’s experience, the magi’s plans didn’t turn out the way they expected. But they gave what money can-
not buy. They came with gifts, but then bowed to worship One who would ultimately make the greatest of all loving sacrifices for them—and for us. MART DEHAAN

우리 아버지처럼

먼지가 앉은 채로 내 서재 바닥에 놓여있는 뒷굽이 있는 아버지의 카우보이 부츠는 아버지가 어떤 분이셨는지를 매일 생각나게 해줍니다.

아버지가 하신 여러 가지 일 중에는 소떼를 모는 전광석화와 같이 빠른 말을 키우고 훈련시키는 일이 있었습니다. 나는 말을 타고 계신 아버지의 모습에 감탄하며 아버지가 일하시는 모습을 지켜보기를 좋아했습니다. 어린아이였던 나는 나중에 커서 아버지처럼 되고 싶었습니다. 이제 내 나이가 80대가 되었지만, 아버지의 부츠는 아직도 내 발에는 너무 큽니다.

아버지는 지금 천국에 계시지만, 내겐 닮고 싶은 또 다른 아버지가 있습니다. 나는 선함으로 가득하고, 사랑의 향기가 나는 그분을 꼭 닮고 싶습니다. 그러기에는 내가 너무 부족하여 이생에서는 결코 그렇게 될 수 없을 것입니다. 내가 채우기에는 그분의 부츠가 너무 큽니다.

그러나 베드로 사도는 이렇게 말했습니다. “모든 은혜의 하나님 곧 그리스도 안에서 너희를 부르사 자기의 영원한 영광에 들어가게 하신 이가 친히 온전하게 하시며 굳건하게 하시며 강하게 하시며 터를 견고하게 하시리라”(베드로전서 5:10). 우리가 아는 것처럼 그분은 그 일을 하실 수 있는 지혜와 권능을 갖고 계십니다(11절).

우리는 언젠가는 하나님 아버지를 닮게 될 것입니다. 하나님은 그분의 아름다운 성품을 나누어주시려고 우리를 부르셨습니다. 우리가 이 세상에서는 하나님을 조금밖에 닮지 못하겠지만, 천국에서는 우리의 죄와 슬픔이 없어지고 하나님을 온전히 닮을 수 있게 될 것입니다! 이것이 “하나님의 참된 은혜”입니다(12절).

Just Like My Father

My father’s dusty, heeled-over, cowboy boots rest on the floor of my study, daily reminders of the kind of man he was.

Among other things, he raised and trained cutting horses—equine athletes that move like quicksilver. I loved to watch him at work, marveling that he could stay astride.

As a boy, growing up, I wanted to be just like him. I’m in my eighties, and his boots are still too large for me to fill.

My father’s in heaven now, but I have another Father to emulate. I want to be just like Him—filled with His goodness, fragrant with His love. I’m not there and never will be in this life; His boots are much too large for me to fill.

But the apostle Peter said this: “The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ . . . will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast” (1 PETER 5:10). He has the wisdom and power to do that, you know (V 11).

Our lack of likeness to our heavenly Father will not last forever. God has called us to share the beauty of character that is His. In this life we reflect Him poorly, but in heaven our sin and sorrow will be no more and we’ll reflect Him more fully! This is the “true grace of God” (V 12). DAVID H. ROPER

전문가들은 무엇이라 말합니까?

‘보스턴 글로브’의 칼럼니스트인 제프 자코비는 “일을 절망적이고 크게 잘못되게 만드는 전문가들의 묘한 능력” 에 대해 글을 썼습니다. 근래의 역사를 언뜻 보더라도 그의 말이 옳다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, 위대한 발명가 토마스 에디슨은 유성 영화가 결코 무성 영화를 대치할 수 없을 거라고 단언했습니다. 또한 1928년에 헨리 포드는 “사람들은 또 다른 전쟁을 일으키기에는 너무 똑똑해지고 있다.”고 말했습니다. 수많은 다른 “전문가”들의 예측도 어이없이 빗나갔습니다. 천재들에게도 명백하게 한계가 있습니다.

그러나 오직 한 분, 우리가 완전히 신뢰할 수 있는 분이 있습니다. 그분은 소위 전문가라고 하는 사람들에게도 강한 어조로 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님 시대의 종교 지도자들은 자신들이 진리를 안다고 주장했습니다. 당시 학자들과 신학자들은 약속하신 메시아가 오면 자신들이 그를 알아볼 것이라고 생각했습니다.

예수님은 그들에게 “너희가 성경에서 영생을 얻는 줄 생각하고 성경을 연구하거니와”라고 하시며 주의를 주셨습니다. 그리고 뒤이어 그들이 얼마나 문제의 본질을 놓치고 있는지를 지적하셨습니다. “이 성경이 곧 내게 대하여 증언하는 것이니라 그러나 너희가 영생을 얻기 위하여 내게 오기를 원하지 아니하는도다”(요한복음 5:39-40).

또 다시 새해가 시작되면서 우리는 비관적인 것으로부터 극도로 낙관적인 전망에 이르기까지 다양한 예측을 듣게 될 것입니다. 그중 많은 예측이 상당한 확신과 권위를 가지고 언급될 것입니다. 하지만 그것들에 너무 놀라지 마십시오. 우리는 성경말씀의 핵심이신 그분을 신뢰하기 때문입니다. 주님은 우리와 우리의 미래를 단단히 붙잡고 계십니다.

What Do the Experts Say?

Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby writes of the “uncanny ability of experts to get things hopelessly, cataclysmically wrong.” A quick glance at recent history shows he’s right. The great inventor Thomas Edison, for instance, once declared that talking movies would never replace silent films. And in 1928, Henry Ford declared, “People are becoming too intelligent ever to have another war.” Countless other predictions by “experts” have missed the mark badly. Genius obviously has its limits.

Only one Person is completely reliable, and He had strong words for some so-called experts. The religious leaders of Jesus’s day claimed to have the truth. These scholars and theologians thought they knew what the promised Messiah would be like when He arrived.

Jesus cautioned them, “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.” Then He pointed out how they were missing the heart of the matter. “These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (JOHN 5:39–40).

As another new year gets underway, we’ll hear predictions ranging from the terrifying to the wildly optimistic. Many of them will be stated with a great deal of confidence and authority. Don’t be alarmed. Our confidence remains in the One at the very heart of the Scriptures. He has a firm grip on us and on our future. TIM GUSTAFSON

숨이 멎을 것 같은 영광

유럽 여행의 즐거움 중 하나는 곳곳마다 위치한 대성당을 방문하는 것입니다. 하늘을 향해 솟아오른 성당은 숨이 멎을 정도로 아름답습니다. 이 놀라운 건축물들이 보여주는 건축양식, 예술성, 상징적 의미는 그 경이로움과 장엄함으로 우리의 넋을 잃게 만듭니다. 이 건축물들이 하나님의 위엄과 그 위대하심을 나타내기 위해 세워졌다는 것을 떠올리면서, 나는 어떻게 하면 우리의 가슴과 마음속에서도 그와 같은 하나님의 장엄함을 다시금 느끼고 그분의 위대하심을 되새겨볼 수 있을까 생각해보았습니다.

우리가 할 수 있는 방법 중 하나는 사람이 만들어낸 크고 웅장한 건물을 보는 것을 넘어서 하나님께서 직접 만드신 창조물의 위대함을 보고 그에 대해 숙고해보는 것입니다. 별이 반짝이는 밤하늘을 보면서 말씀으로 우주를 창조하신 하나님의 능력을 생각해보십시오. 갓 태어난 아기를 품에 안고 생명의 기적을 주신 하나님께 감사하십시오. 알래스카의 눈 덮인 산, 또는 하나님께서 지으신 수많은 생명체로 가득한 웅대한 대서양을 보면서 생태계를 유지시키는 능력을 떠올려보십시오.

우리에게 하나님을 드러내려는 의도로 하늘 높이 건축물을 쌓아올린 인류가 잘못을 저지른 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 우리는 “여호와여 위대하심과 권능과 영광과 승리와 위엄이 다 주께 속하였사오니”(역대상 29:11)라고 고백하며, 하나님 그분만을 진정으로 높여야 할 대상으로 삼아야 합니다.

Breathtaking Glory

One of the pleasures of a trip to Europe is visiting the grand cathedrals that dot the landscape. They are breathtakingly beautiful as they soar toward the heavens. The architecture, art, and symbolism found in these amazing buildings present a spellbinding experience of wonder and magnificence.

As I thought about the fact that these structures were built to reflect God’s magnificence and His all-surpassing splendor, I wondered how we could possibly recapture in our hearts and minds a similar feeling of God’s grandeur and be reminded again of His greatness.

One way we can do that is to look beyond man’s grand, regal structures and contemplate the greatness of what God Himself has created. Take one look at a starry night sky and think of God’s power as He spoke the universe into existence. Hold a newborn baby in your arms and thank God for the miracle of life itself. Look at the snow-covered mountains of Alaska or the majestic Atlantic Ocean teeming with millions of God-designed creatures and imagine the power that makes that ecosystem work.

Mankind is not wrong to reach for the sky with structures that are intended to point us to God. But our truest admiration should be reserved for God Himself as we say to Him, “Yours, LORD , is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor” (1 CHRONICLES 29:11). 계속 나아가기

내가 일하는 사무실 건물 밖을 지나가다가 지면을 덮은 콘크리트의 갈라진 틈 사이로 아름다운 꽃 한 송이가 자라고 있는 것을 발견하고 무척 놀랐습니다. 열악한 환경에도 불구하고 그 식물은 발판을 찾아서 틈 사이의 건조한 땅에 뿌리를 내려 잘 자라고 있었습니다. 잠시 후 나는 그 식물 위에 설치되어 있는 에어컨에서 물방울이 종일 떨어지고 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 주변은 비록 열악했지만 그 식물은 위에서 떨어지는 물로 필요한 도움을 받고 있었던 것입니다.

그리스도인의 삶 가운데 성장해 가는 것이 힘들 때도 있지만 그리스도와 함께 인내하며 나아가면 장벽을 넘을 수 있습니다. 우리의 상황이 힘들고, 그 절망감이 장애물 같이 여겨질 수도 있습니다. 하지만 우리가 주님과의 관계 속에서 계속 나아가면 우리는 홀로 자라난 그 식물처럼 잘 자라게 될 것입니다. 바울 사도도 그런 경험을 했습니다. 그는 엄청난 고난과 시험을 당했음에도 불구하고(고린도후서 11:23-27) 포기하려 하지 않았습니다. 바울은 “오직 내가 그리스도 예수께 잡힌바 된 그것을 잡으려고 달려가노라...... 푯대를 향하여 부름의 상을 위하여 달려가노라”(빌립보서 3:12,14)라고 기록했습니다.

바울은 그에게 능력을 주시는 주님 안에서 모든 것을 할 수 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다(4:13). 우리도 마찬가지로 우리에게 능력을 주시는 분의 도움으로 계속 나아갈 수 있습니다.

Pressing On

As I walked past an outside wall of the office building where I work, I was amazed to see a beautiful flower growing up through a crack between concrete slabs covering the ground. Despite its deprived circumstance, the plant had found a foothold, rooted itself in the dry crevice, and was flourishing. Later, I noticed that an air-conditioning unit located directly above the plant dropped water on it throughout the day. While its surroundings were hostile, the plant received the help it needed from the water above.

Growing in the Christian life can sometimes be difficult, but when we persevere with Christ, barriers are surmountable. Our circumstances may be unfavorable and discouragement may seem like an obstacle. Yet if we press on in our relationship with the Lord, we can flourish like that lone plant. This was the experience of the apostle Paul. Despite the severe hardships and challenges he faced (2 CORINTHIANS 11:23–27), he wouldn’t give up. “I . . . take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me,” he wrote. “I press on toward the goal to win the prize” (PHILIPPIANS 3:12, 14).

Paul realized he could do all things through the Lord who strengthened him (4:13), and so can we as we press on with the help of One who gives us strength. L AWRENCE DARMANI

다시 시작하기

12월 말 크리스마스 축제행사가 모두 끝나고 나면, 종종 나는 다가오는 새해에 대해 생각해봅니다. 아이들이 방학을
하고 한가한 일상 속에서 나는 지난해를 어떻게 보냈는지 돌이켜보고 내가 원하는 새해에 대한 생각에 잠깁니다. 이런
생각은 때로는 내가 저질렀던 실수에 대한 아픔과 후회로 이어지기도 합니다. 하지만 다가올 새해를 바라보면 이내
희망과 기대로 가득 찹니다. 지난해에 어떤 일이 있었더라도 이제 다시 새롭게 시작할 수 있는 기회를 가진다고 생각합니다.

바사 왕 고레스가 바벨론에서 이스라엘 백성들을 70년간의 긴 포로생활에서 해방시켜 고국 유다로 돌려보냈을 때 그들이 느꼈을 희망에 비하면 나의 새로운 출발에 대한 기대는 빛이 바래고 맙니다. 이전 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살은 이스라엘 백성들을 그들의 고향에서 추방시켰습니다. 그러나 하나님은 고레스의 마음을 감동시켜 포로들을 그들의 고향인 예루살렘으로 돌려보내 성전을 재건하게 하셨습니다(에스라 1:2-3). 또한 고레스는 이전에 성전에서 탈취했던 보물도 그들에게 돌려주었습니다. 그들의 죄의 결과로 바벨론에서의 힘들었던 긴 시간을 보낸 후, 그들은 하나님께서 주신 땅에서 하나님께 선택받은 백성으로서의 삶을 새롭게 시작했습니다.

우리가 죄를 고백하면 과거에 무슨 일이 있었든지 하나님은 우리를 용서하시고 새로운 시작을 하게 해주십니다. 그것이 바로 희망을 가질 아주 큰 이유입니다!

Beginning Again

After Christmas festivities conclude at the end of December, my thoughts often turn to the coming year. While my children are out of school and our daily rhythms are slow, I reflect on where the last year has brought me and where I hope the next will take me. Those reflections sometimes come with pain and regret over the mistakes I’ve made. Yet the prospect of starting a new year fills me with hope and expectancy. I feel I have the opportunity to begin again with a fresh start, no matter what the last year held.

My anticipation of a fresh start pales in comparison to the sense of hope the Israelites must have felt when Cyrus, the king of Persia, released them to return to their homeland in Judah after seventy long years of captivity in Babylon. The previous king, Nebuchadnezzar, had deported the Israelites from their homeland. But the Lord prompted Cyrus to send the captives home to Jerusalem to rebuild God’s temple (EZRA 1:2–3). Cyrus also returned to them treasures that had been taken from the temple. Their lives as God’s chosen people, in the land God had appointed to them, began afresh after a long season of hardship in Babylon as a consequence for their sin.

No matter what lies in our past, when we confess our sin, God forgives us and gives us a fresh start. What great cause for

그건 내가 아닙니다

20세기 가장 유명한 오케스트라 지휘자들 중 한 사람인 아르투로 토스카니니는 공로가 있는 사람이 인정받기를 진심으로 원했던 사람으로 기억되고 있습니다. 데이빗 으웬은 ‘지휘봉을 쥔 독재자들’이라는 그의 책에서 뉴욕 필하모닉 오케스트라 단원들이 베토벤의 교향곡 9번을 총연습한후에 모두 기립하여 토스카니니를 환호하는 모습을 그리고 있습니다. 환호가 잠잠해지자 아르투로는 눈물을 머금고 떨리는 목소리로 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “환호를 받아야 할 이는 내가 아닙니다...... 베토벤입니다!...... 토스카니니는 아무것도 아닙니다.”

바울 사도도 그의 신약성경 서신에서 그의 영적인 통찰력과 영향력에 대해 칭찬 받기를 거부하였습니다. 그는 자신이 그리스도를 믿는 많은 이들에게 영적인 아버지와 어머니 같은 존재라는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그는 많은 사람들의 믿음, 소망, 사랑을 북돋기 위해 열심히 일했고 고난도 많이 받았다는 것을 인정했습니다(고린도전서 15:10). 그러나 그는 자기의 믿음과 사랑과 영성으로 영향 받은 사람들이 자기에게 보내는 칭찬을 양심상 자기 것으로 받아들일 수가 없었습니다.

It Isn’t Me

As one of the most celebrated orchestral conductors of the twentieth century, Arturo Toscanini is remembered for his desire to give credit to whom credit is due. In David Ewen’s Dictators of the Baton, the author describes how members of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra rose to their feet and cheered Toscanini at the end of a rehearsal of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. When there was a lull in the ovation, and with tears in his eyes, Arturo’s broken voice could be heard exclaiming as he spoke: “It isn’t me . . . it’s Beethoven! . . . Toscanini is nothing.”

In the apostle Paul’s New Testament letters, he also refused to take credit for his spiritual insight and influence. He knew he was like a spiritual father and mother to many who had put their faith in Christ. He admitted he had worked hard and suffered much to encourage the faith, hope, and love of so many (1 COR 15:10). But he could not, in good conscience, accept the applause of those who were inspired by his faith, love, and insight.

So for his readers’ sake, and for ours, Paul said, in effect, “It isn’t me, brothers and sisters. It’s Christ . . . Paul is nothing.” We are only messengers of the One who deserves our cheers. - MART DEHAAN

불안의 치료

남편의 직장 때문에 이사를 하게 되어 우리는 신이 났습니다. 그러나 모르는 것들과 쉽지 않은 일들도 많을 거라는 생각에 걱정도 되었습니다. 짐을 정리해서 싸야 하고, 살 집을
찾아야 하며, 내 직장도 새로 구해야 되고, 새로운 도시에 익숙해서 정착해야 하는 것 등을 생각하니 모든 것이 다 불안했습니다. 그러다가 “해야 할 일”의 목록들을 생각하던 중, ‘아무것도 염려하지 말고 다만 기도하라’ (빌립보서 4:6-7)고 한 바울 사도의 말이 마음에 떠올랐습니다.

알 수 없는 일들과 어려운 도전 앞에서 불안해했을 사람이 있다면 아마도 바울이 바로 그 사람일 것입니다. 그는 난파당하고, 매를 맞고, 감옥에 갇히기도 했습니다. 하지만 그는 빌립보교회에 보낸 편지에서 자기처럼 알 수 없는 일들을 눈앞에 두고 있는 동료들에게 이렇게 격려했습니다. “아무것도 염려하지 말고 다만 모든 일에 기도와 간구로 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라”(6절).

바울의 말은 나에게 용기를 줍니다. 인생에는 불확실한 것들이 늘 있습니다. 그것들은 삶의 큰 전환점의 형태로 오기도 하고, 가정이나 건강, 혹은 재정적인 문제의 모습으로 찾아오기도 합니다. 하지만 내가 계속해서 깨닫는 것은 하나님이 돌보고 계신다는 것입니다. 하나님은 불확실한 것에 대한 두려움을 그분께 다 드리고 떨쳐버리라고 하십니다. 그러면 모든 것을 아시는 하나님께서 “모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라”(7절)고 약속해주십니다.

The Cure for Anxiety

We were excited about moving for my husband’s job. But the unknowns and challenges left me feeling anxious. Thoughts of sorting and packing up belongings. Looking for a place to live. My finding a new job too. Making my way around a new city, and getting settled. It was all . . . unsettling. As I thought about my “to-do” list, words written by the apostle Paul echoed in my mind: Don’t worry, but pray (PHIL 4:6–7).

If anyone could have been anxious about unknowns and challenges, it would have been Paul. He was shipwrecked. He was beaten. He was jailed. In his letter to the Philippian church, he encouraged his friends who also were facing unknowns, telling them, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (V 6).

Paul’s words encourage me. Life is not without uncertainties—whether they come in the form of a major life transition, family issues, health scares, or financial trouble. What I continue to learn is that God cares. He invites us to let go of our fears of the unknown by giving them to Him. When we do, He, who knows all things, promises that His peace, “which transcends all understanding, will guard” our heart and mind in Christ Jesus (V 7). - KAREN WOLFE

모든 것이 선물입니다!

런던에 있는 랑데부 카페에는 아름다운 조명과 편안한 의자, 은은한 커피향이 있습니다. 그런데 그곳에는 가격표가 없습니다. 이 카페는 원래 지역 교회에서 사업으로 시작했던 것인데, 일 년 후에 바뀌었습니다. 모든 메뉴를 무료로 제공하는 완전히 새로운 방식을 하나님께서 원하신다고 카페의 매니저들이 느낀 것입니다. 오늘도 거기에 가면 누구나 커피나 케이크, 혹은 샌드위치를 돈 없이도 주문할 수 있습니다. 기부금을 넣는 항아리도 없습니다. 모든 것이 다 선물입니다.

이렇게 베푸는 이유가 뭐냐고 매니저에게 물었더니 그는 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리는 단지 하나님께서 우리를 대하시는 방식대로 사람들을 대하려고 할 뿐입니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분께 고마움을 표시하든 안하든 우리에게 주십니다. 하나님은 상상할
수 없을 정도로 우리에게 관대한 분이시기 때문입니다.”

예수님은 우리를 죄에서 구원하시고 하나님과 화목시키기 위해 돌아가셨습니다. 주님은 무덤에서 부활하셔서 지금도 살아계십니다. 이것 때문에 우리가 이미 저지른 모든 잘못들을 용서받을 수 있고 오늘 새 생명을 가질 수 있습니다(에베소서 2:1-5). 그리고 무엇보다 가장 놀라운 사실 중의 하나는 이것이 모두 선물이라는 것입니다. 우리는 예수님이 주시는 새 생명을 돈으로 살 수 없습니다. 우리는 엄청난 그 가격에 기부조차도 할 수 없습니다(8-9절). 그 모든 것이 다 선물입니다.

랑데부 카페에서 케이크와 커피를 대접 받는 사람들은 하나님의 너그러움을 잠시 체험하게 됩니다. 예수님이 값을 이미 치르셨기 때문에 당신과 나도 영생을 선물로 받았습니다.

It’s All a Gift!

London’s Café Rendezvous has nice lighting, comfortable couches, and the smell of coffee in the air. What it doesn’t have are prices. Originally started as a business by a local church, the café was transformed a year after it started. The managers felt that God was calling them to do something radical—make everything on the menu free. Today you can order a coffee, cake, or sandwich without cost. There isn’t even a donation jar. It’s all a gift.

I asked the manager why they were so generous. “We’re just trying to treat people the way God treats us,” he said. “God gives to us whether we thank him or not. He’s generous to us beyond our imaginations.”

Jesus died to rescue us from our sins and reconcile us with God. He rose from the grave and is alive now. Because of this, every wrong thing we’ve done can be forgiven, and we can have new life today (EPH 2:1–5). And one of the most amazing things about this is that it is all free. We can’t buy the new life Jesus offers. We can’t even donate toward the cost (VV 8–9). It’s all a gift.

As the folks at Café Rendezvous serve their cakes and coffees, they give people a glimpse of God’s generosity. You and I are offered eternal life for free because Jesus has paid the bill. - SHERIDAN VOYSEY
