살아 있는 이유

최근 재정적인 조언에 관한 책들을 보다가 흥미로운 경향을 발견했습니다. 그런 책들은 대부분 유익한 충고를 담고 있는데 많은 책들이 현재 우리가 아끼고 살아야 하는 이유가 훗날에 백만장자처럼 살기 위해서라고 암시한다는 점입니다. 그런데 한 권의 책이 유독 참신하게 색다른 관점을 피력하고 있었습니다. ‘검소하게’ 사는 것이 풍요로운 삶을 사는 데 필수적이라는 것이었습니다. 당신이 기쁨을 누리기 위하여 더 많고 더 근사한 것들을 필요로 한다면 “당신은 살아가는 이유를 잃은 상태입니다.”라고 그 책은 말합니다.

이와 같은 통찰은 자신의 형제에게 유산을 자신과 나누도록 설득해달라고 부탁했던 한 남자에게 예수님이 주신 답변을 떠오르게 했습니다. 예수님은 일말의 동정도 없이 그 사람을 쫒아내며 “모든 종류의 탐욕” 에 대해 준엄히 경고하셨습니다. 왜냐하면 “사람의 생명이 그 소유의 넉넉한 데 있지 아니하기”(누가복음 12:14-15) 때문이었습니다. 주님은 또 자신의 농작물을 저장하고 호화로운 삶을 즐기려는 한 부자의 계획에 대하여 말씀하셨는데(1세기 판의 은퇴계획이라 할 수 있겠지요), 그 결말은 참담했습니다. 그의 재산은 그에게 아무런 좋은 결과도 가져다주지 않았습니다. 바로 그날 그가 죽음을 맞이했기 때문입니다(16-20절).

우리는 우리의 재산을 지혜롭게 써야 할 책임이 있지만, 예수님의 말씀은 우리의 동기를 확인해보라고 상기시켜 줍니다. 우리의 마음은 우리 자신의 미래를 준비하기보다는 주님을 알고 다른 이들을 섬기면서 하나님의 나라를 추구하는 데 집중되어야 합니다(29-31절). 우리가 주님을 위해 살며 다른 이들과 너그럽게 나눌 때, 우리는 바로 ‘지금’ 우리 삶의 모든 것에 의미를 부여하는 하나님 나라에서 주님과 함께 풍성한 삶을 누릴 수 있습니다(32-34절).

하나님 나라에서의 풍성한 삶을 즐기기 위해 그때까지 기다릴 필요가 없다.

The Point of Being Alive

Lately, as I’ve been skimming financial advice books, I’ve noticed an interesting trend. While almost all such books have good advice, many imply that the primary reason to cut costs is to live like millionaires later. But one book offered a refreshingly different perspective, arguing that living simply is essential for a rich life. If you need more or fancier stuff to feel joy, the book suggested, “You’re missing the point of being alive.”

Those insightful words brought to mind Jesus’s response when a man asked Him to urge his brother to divide an inheritance with him. Instead of sympathizing, Jesus dismissed him abruptly before warning sternly about “all kinds of greed”—because “life does not consist in an abundance of possessions” (Luke 12:14–15). He then described a wealthy person’s plans to store his crops and enjoy a luxurious lifestyle—the first-century version of retirement planning—with a blistering conclusion. His wealth did him no good, since he died that night (vv. 16–20).

Although we are responsible to use our resources wisely, Jesus’s words remind us to check our motivation. Our hearts should be focused on pursuing God’s kingdom—knowing Him and serving others—not on securing our own futures (vv. 29–31). As we live for Him and freely share with others, we can fully enjoy a rich life with Him now—in the kingdom that gives meaning to all of life (vv. 32–34). - MONICA BRANDS

진흙길가에 빽빽이 둘러 서있는 구경꾼들 사이에 서 있다고 상상해보십시오. 당신 뒤의 여자는 발끝으로 서서 누가 오고 있나 보고 있습니다. 당신은 멀리서 당나귀를 타고 있는 남자를 발견합니다. 그가 가까워지자 사람들이 자신들의 겉옷을 길 위에 던지기 시작합니다. 갑자기 뒤에서 나뭇가지가 부러지는 소리가 납니다. 어떤 사람이 종려나무 가지를 자르고 있고, 사람들은 그 가지를 걸어오는 당나귀 앞에 펼칩니다.

예수님을 따르는 사람들은 주님이 십자가에 못 박히시기 며칠 전 예루살렘에 들어가실 때에 주님을 열광적으로 찬양 하였습니다. 군중들은 “자기들이 본 바 모든 능한 일”(누가복음 19:37)로 인하여 하나님을 기뻐하고 찬양했습니다. 예수님의 추종자들은 주님을 둘러싸고 “찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 왕이여”(38절)라고 외쳤습니다. 그들의 열렬한 찬양은 예루살렘 사람들에게 영향을 끼쳤습니다. 예수님이 마침내 도착하였을 때 “온 성이 소동하여 이르되 ‘이는 누구냐’ 하였습니다”(마태복음 21:10).

오늘날 사람들은 여전히 예수님에 대하여 궁금해 합니다. 비록 우리는 예수님을 향해 종려나무가지로 그의 앞길을 열거나 예수님께
직접 찬양을 할 수는 없지만 우리는 여전히 주님을 높여드릴 수 있습니다. 우리는 주님의 놀라운 일들에 대하여 이야기를 나눌 수 있고, 불우한 이웃들을 도울 수 있으며, 모욕 받을 때 인내할 수 있고, 서로를 깊이 사랑할 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리는 “예수님은 누구입니까?”라고 묻는 군중들에게 대답할 준비가 되어 있어야 합니다.

Who Is This?

Imagine standing shoulder to shoulder with onlookers by a dirt road. The woman behind you is on her tiptoes, trying to see who is coming. In the distance, you glimpse a man riding a donkey. As He approaches, people toss their coats onto the road. Suddenly, you hear a tree crack behind you. A man is cutting down palm branches, and people are spreading them out ahead of the donkey.

Jesus’s followers zealously honored Him as He entered Jerusalem a few days before His crucifixion. The multitude rejoiced and praised God for “all the miracles they had seen” (Luke 19:37). Jesus’s devotees surrounded Him, calling out, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” (v. 38). Their enthusiastic honor affected the people of Jerusalem. When Jesus finally arrived, “the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’ ” (Matthew 21:10).

Today, people are still curious about Jesus. Although we can’t pave His way with palm branches or shout praises to Him in person, we can still honor Him. We can discuss His remarkable works, assist people in need, patiently bear insults, and love each other deeply. Then we must be ready to answer the onlookers who ask, “Who is Jesus?” - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

보여줌의 능력

내가 집수리를 하다 보면, 원래의 문제를 고치려다가 오히려 더 망가뜨리게 되고, 결국은 돈을 주고 사람을 불러서 그것을 복구하는 일이 종종 생기곤 합니다. 하지만, 최근에 나는 유튜브의 영상을 보면서 가전제품을 고치는 데 성공했습니다. 어떤 사람이 그 영상에서 고치는 과정을 단계별로 차근차근 보여주었기 때문입니다.

바울은 젊은 제자 디모데에게 훌륭한 본보기를 보여주었습니다. 디모데는 바울과 여행을 하면서 바울의 행동을 지켜봤습니다.
로마 감옥에서 바울은 이렇게 편지했습니다. “나의 교훈과 행실과 의향과 믿음과 오래 참음과 사랑과 인내와 박해를......네가 과연
보고 알았거니와”(디모데후서 3:10-11). 또한 바울은 디모데에게 이렇게 강권합니다. “너는 배우고 확신한 일에 거하라 너는 네가
누구에게서 배운 것을 알며 또 어려서부터 성경을 알았나니”(14-15절).

바울의 삶은 우리의 삶이 하나님 말씀의 기초 위에 세워져야 한다는 것을 보여주었습니다. 그는 디모데에게 성경은 그리스도를 따르기를 원하는 사람들에게 가르치고 보여주라고 하나님이 우리에게 주신 훌륭한 자료라는 것을 주지시켰습니다.

우리가 믿음 속에서 성장하도록 도와주었던 분들에 대해 주님께 감사할 때, 우리는 우리가 다른 사람들을 가르치고 권면함에 있어
그들이 보여준 진리를 실천하는 삶의 모범을 따라야 한다는 도전도 함께 받게 됩니다.

그것이 바로 보여줌의 능력입니다.

The Power of Demonstration

My attempts at fixing things around the house usually lead to paying someone else to undo the damage I caused while trying to fix the original problem. But recently I successfully repaired a home appliance by watching a YouTube video where a person demonstrated step by step how to do it.

Paul was a powerful example to his young protégé Timothy who traveled with him and watched him in action. From prison in Rome, Paul wrote, “You . . . know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings” (2 Timothy 3:10–11). In addition, he urged Timothy to “continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures” (vv. 14–15).

Paul’s life demonstrated the necessity of building our lives on the bedrock of God’s Word. He reminded Timothy that the Bible is the powerful, God-given source that we need to teach and to demonstrate to others who want to be Christ-followers.

As we thank the Lord for the people who helped us grow in faith, we are challenged to follow their example of living out the truth as we teach and encourage others.

이중 약속

몇 년 전부터 암으로 고생해온 루스에게는 먹고 마시는 것은 물론 삼키는 것조차 힘이 듭니다. 기력이 많이 약해졌고, 여러 번의 수술과 치료로 예전의 그녀의 모습은 이제 윤곽만 남아 있습니다.

하지만, 루스는 아직도 하나님을 찬양할 수 있고, 그녀의 믿음은 강하고, 그녀의 기쁨은 다른 이에게 전염될 정도입니다. 매일 하나님을 의지하면서, 언 젠 가 는 완 전 히 회 복 될 것이라는 소망을 굳게 붙들고 있습니다. 치유를 위해서 기도하며, 하나님께서 조만간 응답하시리라고 확신합니다. 얼마나 엄청난 믿음인지요!

그녀의 믿음이 강하게 지속될 수 있는 것은 하나님께서 그분의 시간에 그분의 약속을 이루실 뿐 아니라, 그때까지 그녀를 붙들어주실 거라는 것을 확실히 알기 때문 이라고 루스는 설명합니다. 이것은 하나님의 백성들이 하나님께서 그분의 계획을 완성하시고(이사야 25:1), 적들로부터 그들을 구원하시고 (2절), 그들의 눈물을 닦아주시고, 그들의 수치를 도말하시며, “사망을 영원히 멸하실 것”(8절)을 기다리면서 붙들었던 소망과 동일합니다.

그러는 중에 하나님은 그분의 백성들이 기다릴 때 그들에게 피난처와 쉼터를 제공해주셨습니다(4절). 하나님은 역경 가운데 그들을
위로하시고, 견딜 힘을 주시며, 하나님이 그들과 함께 계신다는 확신을 주셨습니다.

이것이 바로 우리가 받은 이중 약속입니다. 장차 있을 구원에 대한 소망이 그 하나이며, 우리가 사는 동안 하나님께서 안위하시고 힘과 피난처를 제공해주시겠다는 것이 그것입니다.

A Double Promise

Since she suffered with cancer several years ago, Ruth has been unable to eat, drink, or even swallow properly. She has also lost a lot of her physical strength, and numerous operations and treatments have left her a shadow of what she used to be.

Yet Ruth is still able to praise God; her faith remains strong, and her joy is infectious. She relies on God daily, and holds on to the hope that she will recover fully one day. She prays for healing and is confident that God will answer—sooner or later. What an awesome faith!

Ruth explained that what keeps her faith strong is the secure knowledge that God will not only fulfill His promises in His time, but will also sustain her until that happens. This was the same hope that God’s people had as they waited for Him to complete His plans (Isaiah 25:1), deliver them from their enemies (v. 2), wipe away their tears, remove their disgrace, and “swallow up death forever” (v. 8).

In the meantime, God gave His people refuge and shelter (v. 4) as they waited. He comforted them in their ordeals, gave them strength to endure, and gave them assurance that He was there with them.

This is the double promise we have—the hope of deliverance one day, plus the provision of His comfort, strength, and shelter throughout our lives. - LESLIE KOH

유산의 전수

문자 메시지가 왔다고 휴대폰이 울렸습니다. 페퍼민트 아이스크림 파이를 만드는 증조 할머니의 조리법을 알고 싶다고 딸이 보낸 메시지였습니다. 오래된 조리법 상자를 가져와 그 안에 들어있는 노랗게 빛바랜 카드들을 하나씩 넘기다보니, 할머니의 독특한 글씨체가 눈에 들어왔고, 또 어머니가 써놓은 작은 글씨들도 보였습니다. 딸에게까지 전해짐으로써, 페퍼민트 아이스크림 파이는 우리 가문에서 4대째 전승이 되는구나 하는 생각이 문득 들었습니다.

나는 생각했습니다. ‘어떤 다른 유산 들이 세대와 세대를 걸쳐 전해질 수 있을까? 믿음과 관련된 선택들은 어떨까? 파이 이외
에도 할머니의 믿음과 나의 믿음이 우리 딸과 그 후손들의 삶 가운데 나타날 수 있을까?’

시편 79편에서 시편 기자는 고집 센 이스라엘을 슬퍼합니다. 이스라엘이 믿음의 밧줄을 놓쳐버렸기 때문입니다. 그는 하나님이
그분의 백성들을 불의한 자들로부터 구해주시고 예루살렘을 안전한 상태로 회복시켜 주시기를 간구합니다. 그렇게만 된다면, 돌이켜 지속적으로 헌신하여 하나님의 길을 따르겠다고 약속합니다. “그리하면 우리는 주의 백성이요 주의 목장의 양이니 우리는 영원히 주께 감사하며 주의 영예를 대대에 전하리이다”(13절).

할머니의 디저트 유산이 우리 가문의 새로운 세대에 대물림 될 것을 생각하며, 나는 기꺼이 조리법을 알려주었습니다. 그리고 모든 것 중에 가장 오랫동안 대물림 되어야 할 유산을 위하여 간절히 기도했습니다. 그 유산은 세대를 이어 계속 영향을 미치게 될 우리 가문의 믿음입니다.

Passing on the Legacy

My phone beeped, indicating an incoming text. My daughter wanted my grandmother’s recipe for Peppermint Ice Cream Pie. As I thumbed through the yellowed cards in my aged recipe box, my eyes spotted the unique handwriting of my grandmother—and several jotted notes in the small cursive of my mother. It occurred to me that with my daughter’s request, Peppermint Ice Cream Pie would make its entrance into a fourth generation within my family.

I wondered, What other family heirlooms might be handed down generation to generation? What about choices regarding faith? Besides the pie, would the faith of my grandmother—and my own—play out in the lives of my daughter and her offspring?

In Psalm 79, the psalmist bemoans a wayward Israel, which has lost its faith moorings. He begs God to rescue His people from the ungodly and to restore Jerusalem to safety. This done, he promises a restored—and ongoing—commitment to God’s ways. “Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will praise you forever; from generation to generation we will proclaim your praise” (v. 13).

I eagerly shared the recipe, knowing my grandmother’s dessert legacy would enjoy a new layer in our family. And I prayed sincerely for the most lasting hand-me-down of all: the influence of our family’s faith on one generation to the next. - ELISA MORGAN

물 위를 걷는 것

유난히 추웠던 어느 겨울날 나는 호수가 얼어붙은 것을 보기 위해 세계에서 다섯 번째로 크다는 미시간 호수로 가 보았습니다. 평소에 일광욕을 즐기곤 했던 그 호숫가에서 옷을 두툼하게 껴입고 서서 본 광경은 숨이 막힐 정도로 장관이었습니다. 호수의 물이 실제 파도 모양으로 얼어붙어 걸작을 만들었습니다.

호숫가의 물이 단단히 얼어붙었기 때문에 “물 위를 걸어” 보았습니다. 얼음이 나를 지탱해줄 만큼 충분히 두껍다는 것을 알았지만 나는 처음 몇 걸음을 내디딜 때 망설였습니다. 얼음이 나를 계속 지탱해주지 못할까봐 두려운 마음도 들었습니다. 이 생소한 지형을 조심스럽게 탐험하면서 예수님께서 배에 있던 베드로를 갈릴리 바다로 부르신 일을 생각하게 되었습니다.

예수님이 물 위를 걷는 것을 보았을 때 제자들도 두려움으로 반응했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 “안심하라 나니 두려워하지 말라”라고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 14:26-27). 베드로는 예수님이 거기 계시다는 것을 알고 두려움 없이 물 위로 나갈 수 있었습니다. 그러나 바람과 파도 때문에 용기 있던 발걸음이 흔들리자 그는 예수님께 부르짖었습니다. 예수님은 손만 내밀면 그를 구할 수 있는 가까운 곳에 여전히 서 계셨습니다.

만일 당신이 오늘 물 위를 걷는 것만큼 불가능해 보이는 일을 하도록 예수님께서 부르시는 상황에 처해 있다면, 용기를 내십시오. 당신을 부르시는 그분이 당신과 함께 하실 것입니다.

Walking on Water

During an especially cold winter, I ventured out to Lake Michigan, the fifth largest lake in the world, to see it frozen over. Bundled up on the beach where I usually enjoy soaking up the sun, the view was breathtaking. The water was actually frozen in waves creating an icy masterpiece.

Because the water was frozen solid next to the shore, I had the opportunity to “walk on water.” Even with the knowledge that the ice was thick enough to support me, I took the first few steps tentatively. I was fearful the ice wouldn’t continue to hold me. As I cautiously explored this unfamiliar terrain, I couldn’t help but think of Jesus calling Peter out of the boat onto the Sea of Galilee.

When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, their response was also fear. But Jesus responded, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (Matthew 14:26–27). Peter was able to overcome his fear and step out onto the water because he knew Jesus was present. When his courageous steps faltered because of the wind and waves, Peter cried out to Jesus. Jesus was still there, near enough to simply reach out His hand to rescue him.

If you are facing a situation today where Jesus is calling you to do something that may seem as impossible as walking on water, take courage. The one who calls you will be present with you. - LISA SAMRA

좋은 계절

오늘은 지구 북반구에서 봄의 첫째 날입니다. 만약 호주에 산다면 가을의 첫째 날이 됩니다. 즉, 북반구의 춘분이요 남반구의 추분인 셈입니다. 오늘, 태양은 적도를 직각으로 비추며 낮과 밤의 길이가 전 세계적으로 거의 동일합니다.

새로운 계절은 많은 사람들에게 중요합니다. 어떤 이들은 새로운 계절이 가져다줄 것으로 기대하는 것들 때문에 그 때가 오기를 손꼽아 기다립니다. 어쩌면 당신은 또 하나의 겨울의 끝을 알리는 위스콘신의 봄을 달력에 이미 표시해놓았을지도 모르겠습니다. 혹은 멜버른에 살고 있는 사람들은 호주의 태양으로부터 구제해줄 가을이 빨리 오기를 바라고 있을 수도 있겠지요.

우리는 또한 날씨와 관련이 없는 인생의 계절도 지납니다. 전도서의 저자는 해 아래의 모든 활동에는 다 때가 있는데, 그것은 우리가 인생을 살아가는 동안 하나님이 정해주신 시간이라고 말합니다(3:1-11).

모세는 광야를 지나며 이스라엘 백성들을 인도한 후에, 그의 생애에 있어 새로운 계절에 대해 말하고는(신명기 31:2), 여호수아에게 지도자의 자리를 넘겨주었습니다. 그리고 바울은 로마에서 가택 연금을 당하는
동안 외로운 시기를 지냈습니다. 그때 그는 누군가 찾아오길 바랐지만 하나님이 “내 곁에”(디모데후서 4:17) 계신다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

삶의 계절과 관계없이 하나님의 위대하심과 도우심, 그리고 동행하심에 대해 감사를 드립시다.

A Good Season

Today is the first day of spring in the northern half of the world. If you live in Australia, it’s the first day of autumn—the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere. Today, the sun shines directly on the equator, and the hours of daylight and nighttime are nearly equal around the world.

New seasons are important for many people. Some count down the day because of what they hope the new season will bring. Perhaps you’ve been marking off a calendar for spring in Wisconsin to signal the end of another winter. Or maybe you live in Melbourne, and you can’t wait for autumn to bring relief from the Australian sun.

We also go through seasons of life that don’t have to do with the weather. The author of Ecclesiastes told us there is a season for every activity under the sun—a time appointed by God during which we live our lives (3:1–11).

Moses spoke of a new season in his life after he led the people of Israel through the wilderness (Deuteronomy 31:2), and he had to give up his leadership role to Joshua. And Paul faced a lonely season while he was under house arrest in Rome—asking for visitors but realizing that God was “at my side” (2 Timothy 4:17).

Regardless of the season of life, let’s give thanks to God for His greatness, His help, and His companionship. - DAVE BRANON

감사하는 마음의 기술

우리 결혼식 날 마티와 나는 “좋을 때나 나쁠 때, 아플 때나 건강할 때, 부유할 때나 가난할 때 변함없이 신실할 것”을 기쁜 마음으로 서약했습니다. 어떤 면에서는 기쁜 결혼식 날에 왜 나쁜 때나 병, 가난 같은 암울한 현실에 대한 서약까지 포함시킬까 좀 이상하게 느껴질 수도 있겠지만, 그것은 삶에 종종 “나쁜”

때가 있다는 사실을 강조해주기 위함입니다. 그러면 인생을 사는 동안 피할 수 없는 어려움에 봉착했을 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 바울은 그리스도를 대신해서 우리에게 “범사에 감사하라”(데살로니가전서
5:18)고 강력히 권고합니다. 듣기만 해도 참 어렵게 느껴지는 말이지만, 하나님이 우리에게 감사하는 마음을 가지라고 권면하시는 데에는 충분한 이유가 있습니다. 감사하는 마음은 주님이 “선하시며 그의 인자하심이 영원하다”(시편 118:1)는 진리에 근거를 두고 있습니다. 주님은 고통 가운데 우리와 함께 하시며 우리에게 힘을 주십니다(히브리서 13:5-6). 그리고 우리를 사랑하시기에 시련을 통해 우리의 성품이 주님을 닮아가게 하십니다(로마서 5:3-4).

삶에 힘든 시기가 닥칠 때 감사하는 마음을 가지면, 우리는 하나님의 선하심에 집중하게 되고 시련을 극복할 수 있는 힘을 얻게 됩니다. 시편 기자처럼 우리도 “여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그의 인자하심이 영원함이로다”(시편 118:29)라고 노래할 수 있습니다.

The Art of a Grateful Heart

On our wedding day, Martie and I gladly vowed to be faithful “in good times as well as in bad, in sickness as well as in health, for richer or for poorer.” In a way it may seem strange to include vows about the bleak reality of bad times, sickness, and poverty on a cheerful wedding day. But it underscores the fact that life often has “bad” times.

So what are we to do when we face life’s inevitable difficulties? Paul urges us on behalf of Christ to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). As difficult as that may sound, there is good reason why God encourages us to embrace a spirit of gratitude. Gratitude is grounded in the truth that our Lord “is good” and “his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:1). He is present with us and strengthens us in the midst of trouble (Hebrews 13:5–6), and He lovingly uses our trials to grow our character into His likeness (Romans 5:3–4).

When life hits us with hard times, choosing to be grateful focuses our attention on the goodness of God and gives us the strength to make it through our struggles. With the psalmist, we can sing, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:29). - JOE STOWELL

제2차 세계대전 동안 기초훈련에 소집된 미국 사람들은 집을 멀리 떠나 훈련을 하면서 겪는 힘든 상황에 대처하기 위해 재미있는 편지를 보내는 일로 위안을 삼았습니다. 한 젊은이는 집으로 보낸 편지에서 예방 접종 과정을 멋진 과장을 섞어 이렇게 묘사했습니다. “두 군의관이 작살을 들고 우리를 쫓아와서는 우리를
붙잡아 바닥에 꼼짝 못하게 잡고, 한쪽 팔에 한 방씩 꽂았습니다.”

하지만 어떤 군인이 유머도 효과에 한계가 있다는 것을 깨닫기 시작했는데, 그때 성경 한 권을 받게 되었습니다. 그는 이렇게 편지했습니다. “나는 성경이 너무 좋아서 매일 밤 성경을 읽습니다. 나는 성경에서
그렇게 많은 교훈을 얻을 수 있으리라고는 생각도 못했습니다.”

아주 오래전, 추방되었던 유대인들이 수십 년 간의 바벨론 노예 생활을 끝내고 고향으로 돌아왔을 때 그들의 문제까지도 같이 가지고 온 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들이 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하기 위해 애쓰고 있을 때, 그들은 적군과 기근, 그리고 그들 자신의 죄라는 장애물에 부딪혔습니다. 그런 고통 가운데에서 그들은 하나님의 말씀에 의지했고, 말씀으로부터 많은 것들을 배우며 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 제사장들이 하나님의 율법책을 읽자 사람들은 감격하여 눈물을 흘렸습니다(느헤미야 8:9). 하지만 그들은 평안도 함께 얻었습니다. 느헤미야 총독은 그들에게 “근심하지 말라 여호와로 인하여 기뻐하는 것이 너희의 힘이니라”(10절)라고 말했습니다.

Letters Home

Far from home and training for World War II, American recruits in basic training turned to humor and correspondence to cope with the challenges they faced. In one letter home a young man described the vaccination process with wonderful exaggeration: “Two medical officers chased us with harpoons. They grabbed us and pinned us to the floor and stuck one in each arm.”

Yet one soldier began to realize that humor could only take him so far. Then he received a Bible. “I enjoy it very much and I read it every night,” he wrote. “I never realized you could learn so much from a Bible.”

Long ago, the Jewish exiles returned home after years of slavery in Babylon to find their problems came with them. As they struggled to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, they faced opposition from enemies, famine, and their own sin. Amid their trouble, they turned to God’s Word. They were surprised at what they learned. When the priests read from the Book of the Law of God, the people were moved to tears (Nehemiah 8:9). But they also found comfort. Nehemiah the governor told them, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (v. 10).

We don’t need to wait for trouble to hear from God. The Bible is where we learn about His character, His forgiveness, and His comfort. As we read it, we’ll be surprised at what God’s Spirit will show us in its pages. - TIM GUSTAFSON

속삭이는 말

한 젊은 남자가 비행기 좌석에 앉아 안절부절 못하고 있었습니다. 그는 비행기 창문 쪽을 불안한 눈길로 두리번거리다가 눈을 감고 심호흡을 하면서 자신을 안정시키려고 노력했습니다. 하지만 잘 되지 않았습니다. 비행기가 이륙하자 그는 그의 몸을 앞뒤로 천천히 흔들었습니다. 통로 건너편에 앉아있던 나이든 여성이 젊은이의 주의를 다른 데로 돌려 긴장을 풀어 주기 위해 자신의 손을 뻗어 그의 팔을 잡고 조용히 대화를 시작했습니다. “이름이 뭐예요?” “어디서 왔나요?” “아무 일 없을 거예요.” “아주 잘하고 있어요.” 그녀는 이와 비슷한 몇 마디를 속삭였습니다. 그녀는 그 젊은이에게 짜증을 내거나 무시할 수도 있었지만, 그에게 다가가 몇 마디 말을 하는 것을 택했습니다. 사소한 이야기들로 말입니다. 세 시간 후 비행기가 착륙하자 그는 “도와주셔서 너무 감사합니다.”라고 말했습니다.

온유한 마음씨를 보여주는 이 같은 아름다운 장면은 찾아보기가 어렵습니다. 친절은 많은 사람들에게서 자연스럽게 볼 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 중요 관심사는 대개 우리 자신이기 때문입니다. 그러나 “서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기라”(에베소서 4:32)고 바울 사도가 우리에게 촉구했을 때 그것이 전부 우리에게 달려 있다고 말한 것은 아니었습니다. 예수님을 믿음으로 우리에게 새 생명이 주어지면 성령님이 변화를 만들기 시작합니다. 친절은 우리의 생각과 태도를 새롭게 해주는 성령님의 지속적인 사역의 산물입니다(23절).

긍휼히 여기시는 하나님이 우리 마음에 역사하시면, 우리로 다른 사람들의 삶을 돌아보며 격려의 말을 속삭일 수 있게 해주십니다.

Whispering Words

The young man fidgeted as he sat down for his flight. His eyes darted back and forth to the aircraft windows. Then he closed his eyes and breathed deeply, trying to calm himself—but it didn’t work. As the plane took off, he slowly rocked back and forth. An older woman across the aisle from him put her hand on his arm and gently engaged him in conversation to divert his attention from his stress. “What’s your name?” “Where are you from?” “We’re going to be okay,” and “You’re doing well” were a few things she whispered. She could have been irritated with him or ignored him. But she chose a touch and a few words. Little things. When they landed three hours later, he said, “Thank you so much for helping me.”

Such Beautiful pictures of tenderheartedness can be hard to find. Kindness does not come naturally to many of us; our primary concern is often ourselves. But when the apostle Paul urged, “Be kind and compassionate to one another” (Ephesians 4:32), he was not saying it all depends on us. After we’ve been given a new life by our faith in Jesus, the Spirit begins a transformation. Kindness is the ongoing work of the Spirit renewing our thoughts and attitudes (v. 23).

The God of compassion is at work in our hearts, allowing us in turn to touch others’ lives by reaching out and whispering words of encouragement. - ANNE CETAS
