믿음을 지키는 용기

두려움이 하다샤를 끊임없이 따라다니고 있습니다. 1세기에 살았던 젊은 유대 소녀 하다샤는 프랜신 리버스의 책 ‘바람 속의 소리’에 나오는 허구의 인물입니다. 하다샤가 로마 가정의 노예가 된 후, 그녀는 그리스도를 믿는 신앙에 대한 박해를 두려워합니다. 그녀는 그리스도인들이 멸시 받고, 많은 그리스도인들이 사형집행을 당하거나 원형 경기장의 사자에게 던져진다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그녀가 시험을 받을 때 진리를 옹호할 용기를 갖게 될까요?

그녀의 최악의 두려움이 현실로 다가와, 기독교를 싫어하는 그녀의 여주인과 다른 로마 관리들이 그녀를 대적하게 됩니다. 그녀에게는 두 가지의 선택이 있습니다. 그리스도를 믿는 그녀의 믿음을 철회하든지, 아니면 원형 경기장으로 끌려가는 것입니다. 그때 그녀는 예수님을 그리스도로 선포하게 되고, 그녀의 두려움은 사라지고 죽음 앞에서도 담대해집니다.

성경은 우리가 복음을 전하거나 오늘날의 가치에 반하는 경건한 삶을 사는 것과 같이 옳은 일을 행하는 것 때문에 고난을 겪을 때도 있을 거라고 상기시켜줍니다. 성경은 우리더러 두려워하지 말고(베드로전서 3:14), 우리 마음에 “그리스도를 주로 삼아 거룩하게 하라”(15절)고 말합니다. 하다샤의 주된 싸움은 그녀의 마음 안에서 일어났습니다. 그녀가 마침내 예수님을 선택하기로 결심했을 때, 그녀는 믿음을 지킬 수 있는 용기를 찾게 되었습니다.

우리가 그리스도를 경외하기로 결정할 때, 주님은 우리가 강한 반대 속에서도 담대하여 두려움을 극복할 수 있도록 도와주실 것입니다.

Courage to Be Faithful

Fear is Hadassah’s constant companion. Hadassah, a young Jewish girl living in the first century, is a fictional character in Francine Rivers’ book A Voice in the Wind. After Hadassah becomes a slave in a Roman household, she fears persecution for her faith in Christ. She knows that Christians are despised, and many are sent to their execution or thrown to the lions in the arena. Will she have the courage to stand for the truth when she is tested?

When her worst fear becomes reality, her mistress and other Roman officials who hate Christianity confront her. She has two choices: recant her faith in Christ or be taken to the arena. Then, as she proclaims Jesus as the Christ, her fear falls away and she becomes bold even in the face of death.

The Bible reminds us that sometimes we will suffer for doing what is right—whether for sharing the gospel or for living godly lives that are against today’s values. We are told not to be frightened (1 PETER 3:14), but to “revere Christ as Lord” in our hearts (V 15). Hadassah’s main battle took place in her heart. When she finally made up her mind to choose Jesus, she found the courage to be faithful.

주님의 능력에로의 도피

“패리 넷!”

고등학교에서 펜싱을 시작했을 때 우리 코치는 자신이 취하는 공격에 대비하여 정확한 방어 자세(“패리”) 를 취하라고 외치곤 했습니다. 그가 무기를 뽑고 돌진해올 때, 나는 그 공격을 격퇴하기 위해 잘 듣고 즉시 대응해야 했습니다.

그 적극적인 경청은 성적인 유혹에 대해 성경이 요구하는 즉각적인 순종을 떠올려줍니다. 고린도전서 6장 18절에서 바울은 이교도 성전 매춘부들의 유혹에 빠진 신자들에게 “음행을 피하라”고 말하고 있습니다. 때때로 우리는 어려운 상황들 가운데 “견고히 서 있어야” 하지만 (갈라디아서 5:1; 에베소서 6:11), 여기서 성경은 우리의 최선의 방어책으로 “도망하라!”고 외치고 있습니다.

즉각적인 행동은 타협을 방지해줍니다. 작은 타협도 치명적인 패배로 이어질 수 있습니다. 무절제한 생각, 나쁜 인터넷 사이트 잠깐 보기, 이미 결혼 했음에도 유혹하는 친구관계 등, 이런 것들은 모두 우리가 가지 말아야 할 곳으로 우리를 이끌어 하나님과 우리 사이에 거리를 두게 만드는 발걸음들입니다.

우리가 유혹을 피해 도망할 때 하나님은 우리가 도망할 곳을 마련해주십니다. 우리의 죄를 용서하시기 위해 십자가에서 죽으신 예수님의 죽음을 통해, 주님은 우리가 어디에 있었고 또 무엇을 했더라도 우리에게 소망과 용서, 그리고 새로운 시작을 주십니다. 우리가 약한 중에 예수님을 향해 달려갈 때, 주님은 우리를 주님의 능력 안에서 자유롭게 살 수 있게 해주십니다.

Fleeing to Strength

“Parry four!”

When I began fencing in high school, my coach would shout the correct defensive position (“parry”) against the move he was making. When he extended his weapon and lunged, to repel the attack I had to listen and respond immediately.

That active listening brings to mind the prompt obedience Scripture calls for in the area of sexual temptation. In 1 Corinthians 6:18 Paul writes to believers tempted to solicit pagan temple prostitutes, telling them to “flee from sexual immorality.” Sometimes we are to “stand firm” in challenging circumstances (GALATIANS 5:1; EPHESIANS 6:11), but here the Bible practically shouts our best defense: “Run away!”

Immediate action guards against compromise. Small compromises can lead to devastating defeats. An unrestrained thought, a glance in the wrong place on the Internet, a flirting friendship when you’re already married—each are steps that take us where we shouldn’t go and put distance between us and God.

When we flee temptation, God also provides a place to run. Through Jesus’s death on the cross for our sins, He offers us hope, forgiveness, and a new beginning—no matter where we’ve been or what we’ve done. When we run to Jesus in our weakness, He sets us free to live in His strength. JAMES BANKS

모두를 사랑하기

나는 싱가포르 섬(길이 40킬로미터, 너비 24킬로미터에 불과합니다)에서는 보기 힘든 넓은 들판에 있는 교회에서 예배를 드립니다. 얼마 전부터 싱가포르에 거주하는 외국인 노동자들이 매주 일요일 피크닉 장소로 교회 마당에 모여들기 시작했습니다.

이 일로 교회 성도들은 다양한 반응을 나타냈습니다. 방문객들이 남긴 쓰레기로 걱정하는 사람들도 있었지만, 어떤 사람들은 이것을 교회를 벗어나지 않고도 멋진 이방인 집단에게 환대를 제공할 수 있는 신성한 기회로 보았습니다!

이스라엘 백성들도 그들의 시대에 틀림없이 비슷한 문제에 직면했을 것입니다. 새로운 땅에 정착한 후 그들은 다른 민족들과 어떤 관계를 맺을 것인가라는 문제와 씨름 해야 했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 함께 있는 거류민들을 자신들과 같이 대하고 자신을 사랑하듯이 그들을 사랑하라고 분명히 명령하셨습니다(레위기 19:34). 하나님의 율법 가운데 여러 부분에서도 외국인들을 학대하거나 억압하지 말아야 하며, 그들을 사랑하고 도와주어야 한다고 특별히 언급하고 있습니다(출애굽기 23:9; 신명기 10:19). 여러 세기가 지난 후 예수님도 우리에게 우리 이웃을 우리 자신과 같이 사랑하라고 똑같은 명령을 주셨습니다(마가복음 12:31).

우리도 이 세상에 잠시 머무는 나그네임을 기억하면서 다른 사람들을 우리 자신처럼 사랑할 수 있는 하나님의 마음을 갖기를 바랍니다. 하나님은 우리를 하나님의 백성으로 사랑하고, 하나님 자신처럼 우리를 대해주셨습니다.

우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 받아들임으로써 다른 사람들을 사랑할 수 있게 된다.

Loving All

I worship in a church located in a large, open field—a rare commodity on the island of Singapore (we’re just twenty-five miles long and fifteen miles wide). Some time back, people from abroad who work in my country started gathering on the church property for a picnic every Sunday.

This evoked a range of responses from fellow churchgoers. Some fretted about the mess the visitors would leave behind. But others saw this as a divine opportunity to extend hospitality to a wonderful group of strangers—without even leaving the church grounds!

The Israelites must have faced similar issues in their time. After they settled in their new land, they had to grapple with how to relate to other peoples. But God expressly commanded them to treat foreigners like their own kind, and to love them as themselves (LEVITICUS 19:34). Many of His laws made special mention of foreigners: they were not to be mistreated or oppressed, and they were to be loved and helped (EXODUS 23:9; DEUTERONOMY 10:19). Centuries later, Jesus would command us to do the same: to love our neighbor as ourselves (MARK 12:31).

May we have God’s heart to love others as ourselves, remembering that we too are sojourners on this earth. Yet we have been loved as God’s people, treated as His own. LESLIE KOH

주님의 인도하심을 따라

어렸을 때 나는 교회의 주일저녁 예배를 기대하며 기다렸습니다. 그 시간은 흥미진진했습니다. 주일 저녁은 종종 선교사와 다른 초청연사로부터 말씀을 들을 수 있다는 의미이기도 했습니다. 하나님을 섬기기 위해 가족과 친구들, 때로는 집과 소유물, 직업까지 떠나 낯설고 친근하지 않고 때로는 위험한 곳으로 기꺼이 떠난 그들의 메시지는 나에게 영감을 불어넣어주었습니다.

그 선교사들처럼 엘리사도 많은 것을 뒤로한 채 하나님을 따랐습니다(열왕기상 19:19-21). 우리는 하나님께서 엘리야를 통해 그를 부르시기 전에 그가 농부였다는 사실 외에는 그에 관해 별로 알지 못합니다. 엘리야 선지자가 밭에서 쟁기질 하는 그를 만났을 때 엘리야는 자신의 외투를 그의 어깨 위로 던지며(예언자로서의 역할에 대한 상징) 그에게 따르라고 했습니다. 엘리사는 부모와 작별인사하게 해달라고만 요청하고는, 즉시 소를 잡고 쟁기를 태우고, 부모에게 작별을 고하고 엘리야를 따라갔습니다.

우리 중 대부분은 가족이나 친구를 떠나 전임 선교사로 하나님을 섬기도록 부름 받지는 않지만, 하나님은 우리 모두가 하나님을 따르며 어떤 상황 속에서도 신자로서 “오직 주께서 [우리에게] 나눠주신 대로 하나님이 [우리를] 부르신 그대로 행하”(고린도전서 7:17)기를 원하십니다. 내가 자주 경험한 것처럼, 우리가 집을 떠나지 않고 어디에 있더라도 하나님을 섬기는 일을 통해 스릴과 도전을 경험할 수 있습니다.

Following Where He Leads

As a child, I looked forward to our church’s Sunday evening services. They were exciting. Sunday night often meant we got to hear from missionaries and other guest speakers. Their messages inspired me because of their willingness to leave family and friends—and at times, homes, possessions, and careers—to go off to strange, unfamiliar, and sometimes dangerous places to serve God.

Like those missionaries, Elisha left many things behind to follow God (1 KINGS 19:19–21). Before God called him into service through Elijah, we don’t know much about Elisha—except that he was a farmer. When the prophet Elijah met him in the field where he was plowing, he threw his cloak over Elisha’s shoulders (the symbol of his role as prophet) and called him to follow. With only a request to kiss his mother and father goodbye, Elisha immediately sacrificed his oxen, burned his plowing equipment, said good-bye to his parents—and followed Elijah.

Though not many of us are called to leave family and friends behind to serve God as fulltime missionaries, God wants all of us to follow Him and to “live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to [us], just as God has called [us]” (1 CORINTHIANS 7:17). As I’ve often experienced, serving God can be thrilling and challenging no matter where we are—even if we never leave home. ALYSON KIEDA

선발대

최근에 한 친구가 지금 그녀가 사는 고향에서 1,000마일(약 1,600 킬로미터) 이상 떨어진 도시로 이사하려고 준비했습니다. 친구 부부는 짧은 시간 안에 이사를 마치기 위해 일을 분담하여, 남편이 새로운 거주지에서의 생활에 필요한 제반사항들을 준비하는 동안 친구는 짐을 쌌습니다. 나는 그녀가 미리 그곳에 가 보거나 집을 구하는 일에 참여하지 않고도 어떻게 이사를 할 수 있는지 놀라워, 그녀에게 어떻게 그럴 수 있는지 물어보았습니다. 친구는 쉽지 않은 일임을 인정하면서도, 남편과 함께 한 세월 동안 남편이 그녀의 취향과 필요에 주의를 기울여 왔기 때문에 그를 신뢰할 수 있다고 말했습니다.

다락방 안에서 예수님은 곧 닥칠 배신과 죽음에 대하여 제자들과 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님의 이 땅에서의 삶 가운데 가장 어두운 시간, 그리고 제자들의 가장 어두운 시간들이 앞에 놓여 있었습니다. 내 친구 남편이 가족을 위해 새 집을 준비한 것처럼, 주님은 제자들에게 그들을 위해 천국의 처소를 예비해주실 거라고 분명히 말씀하시며 그들을 위로하셨습니다. 제자들이 예수님에 대해 묻자, 주님은 그들이 주님과 함께 했던 시간들, 그리고 주님이 행하시고 제자들이 목격했던 기적들을 지적하셨습니다. 비록 예수님의 죽음과 부재를 제자들이 슬퍼할 것이겠지만, 주님은 그들에게 주님이 말씀하신 대로 행하신다는 것을 믿어도 된다고 상기시켜주셨습니다.

우리 자신의 어두운 시간들 가운데서도 우리는 주님께서 우리를 선한 곳으로 이끌어주실 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 우리가 주님과 동행할 때, 우리 역시 주님의 신실하심을 점점 더 신뢰할 수 있게 될 것입니다.

The Advance Team

A friend recently prepared to relocate to a city more than 1,000 miles from her current hometown. She and her husband divided the labor of moving to accommodate a short timeline. He secured new living arrangements, while she packed their belongings. I was astounded by her ability to move without previewing the area or participating in the house hunt, and asked how she could do so. She acknowledged the challenge but said she knew she could trust her husband because of his attention to her preferences and needs over their years together.

In the upper room, Jesus spoke with His disciples of His coming betrayal and death. The darkest hours of Jesus’s earthly life, and that of the disciples as well, lay ahead. He comforted them with the assurance that He would prepare a place for them in heaven, just as my friend’s husband prepared a new home for their family. When the disciples questioned Jesus, He pointed them to their mutual history and the miracles they’d witnessed Him perform. Though they would grieve Jesus’s death and absence, He reminded them He could be counted on to do as He’d said.

Even in the midst of our own dark hours, we can trust Him to lead us forward to a place of goodness. As we walk with Him, we too will learn to trust increasingly in His faithfulness. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

축복의 그릇

컴퓨터로 글을 쓰고 있을 때, 이메일 도착을 알리는 익숙한 소리가 나의 주의를 끌었습니다. 보통은 이메일을 확인하고 싶은 유혹에 맞서려고 애쓰는데, “당신은 축복이에요.”라는 제목이 너무 매혹적이었습니다.

급히 그 이메일을 열어보니 그것은 멀리 있는 친구가 내 가족을 위해 기도하고 있다는 것을 알리는 내용 이었습니다. 매주 그녀는 사진으로 된 크리스마스카드 하나를 부엌 탁자 위의 “축복의 그릇”에 세워놓고 그 가족을 위해 기도하고 있습니다. 그녀는 “내가 너희를 생각할 때마다 나의 하나님께 감사하며” (빌립보서 1:3)라는 성경구절을 적은 후, 복음 안에서 “동반자 관계”인 다른 사람들과 하나님의 사랑을 나누는데 함께 노력하자고 강조했습니다.

바울 사도가 빌립보 성도들을 향해 한 말이 내 친구의 의도적인 행동을 거쳐 내 편지함으로 흘러 들어와, 1세기 당시 그의 감사의 글을 읽었던 독자들이 받았을 기쁨과 같은 기쁨이 내 마음에 생겨났습니다. 바울은 자신과 함께 일하는 이들에게 감사를 표현하는 것을 습관으로 삼았던 듯합니다. 그의 많은 편지들은 비슷한 구절로 시작합니다. “내가 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 너희 모든 사람에 관하여 내 하나님께 감사함은 너희 믿음이 온 세상에 전파됨이로다”(로마서 1:8).

A Blessing Bowl

The familiar bing of an arriving email caught my attention while I wrote at my computer. Usually I try to resist the temptation to check every email but the subject line was too enticing: “You are a blessing.”

Eagerly, I opened it to discover a faraway friend telling me she was praying for my family. Each week, she displays one Christmas card photo in her kitchen table “Blessing Bowl” and prays for that family. She wrote, “I thank my God every time I remember you” (PHILIPPIANS 1:3) and then highlighted our efforts to share God’s love with others—our “partnership” in the gospel.

Through my friend’s intentional gesture, the apostle Paul’s words to the Philippians came trickling into my inbox, creating the same joy in my heart I suspect readers received from his first-century thank-you note. It seems Paul made it a habit to speak his gratitude to those who worked alongside him. A similar phrase opens many of his letters: “I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world” (ROMANS 1:8).

In the first century, Paul blessed his co-laborers with a thank-you note of prayerfulness. In the twenty-first century, my friend used a Blessing Bowl to bring joy into my day. How might we thank those who serve in the mission of God with us today? ELISA MORGAN

나를 믿으라

대학 졸업 후 나는 저임금 직업을 가졌습니다. 돈은 빠듯했고, 가끔은 다음번 끼니를 때우기가 힘든 때도 있었습니다. 나는 ‘일용할’ 양식에 대해 하나님을 신뢰하는 법을 배웠습니다.

그것은 나에게 엘리야 선지자의 경험을 떠올려주었습니다. 선지자 사역을 하는 동안 그는 매일의 필요를 채우기 위해 하나님을 신뢰하는 법을 배웠습니다. 엘리야가 이스라엘에 가뭄이 있을 것이라는 하나님의 심판을 선포한 바로 직후 하나님은 그를 황량한 곳 그릿 시냇가로 보내시고, 그곳에서 까마귀들을 통해 일용할 양식을 가져다 주시고 시냇물로 생기를 얻게 하셨습니다 (열왕기상 17:1-4).

그런데 가뭄이 들자 시냇물은 말라서 실개천이 되었고 서서히 가는 물줄기로 변해갔습니다. 그 개울이 바짝 마르자 비로소 하나님은 “사르밧으로 가라...... 내가 그곳 과부에게 명령하여 네게 음식을 주게 하였느니라”(9절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 사르밧은 이스라엘의 적들이 살고 있는 베니게에 있었습니다. 어느 누가 엘리야에게 쉴 곳을 제공해주겠습니까? 가난한 과부가 나눠줄 음식을 가지고 있겠습니까?

우리 대부분은 가까스로 하루하루를 견딜 양보다는 우리가 가진 것이 고갈되기 훨씬 전에 하나님이 풍부하게 공급해주시기를 바랍니다. 그러나 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님 아버지는 ‘나를 믿으라’ 고 속삭이십니다. 하나님이 엘리야를 먹이시기 위해 까마귀와 과부를 사용하신 것처럼, 하나님에게는 불가능할 것이 없습니다. 우리는 우리의 일상의 필요를 채우시는 하나님의 사랑과 능력을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

Trust Me

After graduation from college, I had a low-paying job. Money was tight, and sometimes I didn’t even have enough for my next meal. I learned to trust God for my daily provision.

It reminded me of the prophet Elijah’s experience. During his prophetic ministry, he learned to trust God to meet his daily needs. Shortly after Elijah pronounced God’s judgment of a drought in Israel, God sent him to a deserted place, Kerith Ravine, where He used the ravens to bring Elijah his daily meals and refresh him with water from the brook (1 KINGS 17:1–4).

But a drought occurred. The brook shrank to a tiny stream, and slowly became a mere trickle. It was only when the brook had dried up that God said: “Go at once to Zarephath . . . . I have directed a widow there to supply you with food” (V 9). Zarephath was in Phoenicia, whose inhabitants were enemies of the Israelites. Would anyone offer Elijah shelter? And would a poor widow have food to share?

Most of us would rather God provided in abundance long before our resources were depleted rather than just enough for each day. But our loving Father whispers, Trust Me. Just as He used ravens and a widow to provide for Elijah, nothing is impossible for Him. We can count on His love and power to meet our daily needs. POH FANG CHIA

단층선

난민들이 우리 지역으로 유입되자 지역교회들이 새롭게 성장하기 시작했습니다. 그런데 그 성장은 새로운 도전들을 가져옵니다. 새로 온 그 사람들이 색다른 문화와 새로운 언어, 다른 예배 방식에 적응하는 동안, 교회 성도들은 그들을 어떻게 환영해야 할지를 배워야 합니다. 이 모든 변화는 약간의 어색한 상황을 만들어낼 수도 있습니다.

오해와 불일치는 사람들이 있는 곳이면 어디서든 발생합니다. 교회도 예외는 아닙니다. 만약 우리가 서로 다르다는 것을 건강한 방식으로 다루지 않으면, 그 차이점은 분열로 고착될 수 있습니다.

예루살렘의 초대교회가 성장하고 있는 도중에 문화 단층선으로 인한 균열을 가져온 분쟁이 발생했습니다. 그리스어를 말하는 유대인(헬라파 유대인)들은 자기의 과부들이 “매일의 구제에 빠지므로”(사도행전 6:1) 아람어를 말하는 유대인들을 원망했습니다. 그래서 사도들은 “너희 가운데서 성령과 지혜가 충만하여 칭찬받는 사람 일곱을 택하라”(3절)고 말했습니다. 선택된 일곱 사람은 모두 그리스 이름을 가지고 있었습니다(5절). 다시 말해, 그들은 등한시되고 있었던 사람들인 ‘헬라파 유대인’들이어서 그 문제를 가장 잘 이해하고 있는 사람들이었습니다. 사도들이 그들을 위해 기도했고, 교회는 다시 번성했습니다(6-7절).

성장은 어떤 면에서는 전통적인 장벽들을 넘나드는 상호작용들을 증가시키기 때문에 도전을 가져다줍니다. 그러나 성령님의 인도하심을 구할 때, 우리는 잠재적인 문제들을 더욱 큰 성장을 위한 기회들로 바꿈으로써 창조적인 해결책을 찾을 수 있습니다.

Fault Lines

An influx of refugees to our community has led to new growth in area churches. That growth brings challenges. Church members must learn how to welcome these newcomers as they adjust to a strange culture, new language, and different worship styles. All this change can create some awkward situations.

Misunderstandings and disagreements occur everywhere we find people. Church is no exception. If we don’t handle our differences in a healthy way, they can harden into divisions.

The early church in Jerusalem was growing when a dispute arose that broke along a cultural fault line. The Greek-speaking Jews (the Hellenists) had a complaint against those Jews who spoke Aramaic. The Hellenist widows “were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food” (ACTS 6:1). So the apostles said, “Choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom” (V 3). The seven chosen all had Greek names (V 5). In other words, they were Hellenists , members of the group being neglected. They best understood the problem. The apostles prayed over them and the church thrived (VV 6–7).

Growth brings challenges, in part because it increases interactions across traditional barriers. But as we seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we’ll find creative solutions as potential problems turn into opportunities for more growth. TIM GUSTAFSON

어디에나 있지만 아무데도 없는

우리처럼 자동차 사고로 십대 자녀를 잃은 친구가 딸 린지에 대한 조사를 지역 신문에 실었습니다. 그녀의 글 중 가장 강력한 인상을 주는 부분 중의 하나는 이것이었습니다. 집 주변에 놓아둔 린지의 많은 사진들과 유품들에 대해 언급한 뒤, 그녀는 이렇게 썼습니다. “린지는 어디에나 있지만 아무데도 없습니다.”

비록 우리 딸들은 사진 속에서 우리를 보고 웃어 주고 있지만, 그 미소를 밝힌 생기를 지닌 인물들은 어디서도 찾을 수 없습니다. 그들은 우리의 마음속, 생각 속, 그 모든 사진들 속 어디에나 있지만, 아무데도 없습니다.

그러나 성경은 우리에게, 그리스도 안에서 린지나 멜리사는 실제로 아무데도 없는 것이 아니라고 말합니다. 그들은 예수님 앞에서 “주님과 함께”(고린도후서 5:8) 있습니다. 어떤 면에서 그들은 “아무데도 없지만 어디에나 있는” 한 분과 함께 있는 것입니다. 어쨌든 우리는 하나님을 물리적인 형태로 볼 수는 없습니다. 우리 벽난로 선반 위에 미소 짓는 하나님의 사진은 분명히 없습니다. 사실, 집을 둘러본다면 하나님은 아무 곳에도 없다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 그러나 사실은 정 반대입니다. 하나님은 어디에나 계십니다!

이 지구상의 어디를 가든지 하나님은 거기 계십니다. 하나님은 거기에서 우리를 인도하시고 힘주시며 위로하십니다. 우리는 하나님이 계시지 않는 곳에 갈 수 없습니다. 우리는 하나님을 볼 수 없지만, 하나님은 어디에나 계십니다. 우리가 겪는 매 시련 속에서, 그 사실은 믿을 수 없을 만큼 좋은 소식입니다.

Everywhere and Nowhere

A family friend who, like us, lost a teenager in a car accident wrote a tribute to her daughter, Lindsay, in the local paper. One of the most powerful images in her essay was this: After mentioning the many pictures and remembrances of Lindsay she had put around their house, she wrote, “She is everywhere, but nowhere.”

Although our daughters still smile back at us from their photos, the spirited personalities that lit up those smiles are nowhere to be found. They are everywhere—in our hearts, in our thoughts, in all those photos—but nowhere.

But Scripture tells us that, in Christ, Lindsay and Melissa are not really nowhere. They are in Jesus’s presence, “with the Lord” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:8). They are with the One who, in a sense, is “nowhere but everywhere.” After all, we don’t see God in a physical form. We certainly don’t have smiling pictures of Him on our mantel. In fact, if you look around your house, you may think He is nowhere. But just the opposite is true. He is everywhere!

Wherever we go on this earth, God is there. He’s there to guide, strengthen, and comfort us. We cannot go where He is not. We don’t see Him, but He’s everywhere. In each trial we face, that’s incredibly good news. DAVE BRANON

가능할 것 같지 않은 친구들

내 페이스북 친구들은 내가 최근에 본, 둘도 없는 사이인 강아지와 돼지의 영상, 사슴과 고양이의 영상, 또 심지어는 몇 마리의 새끼 호랑이를 키우는 오랑우탄의 영상처럼, 믿기 힘든 동물들의 우정을 보여주는 사랑스러운 영상들을 종종 게시합니다.

이렇게 마음이 따뜻해지는 특이한 우정을 보며 나는 에덴동산의 묘사된 모습을 떠올립니다. 에덴동산에서 아담과 하와는 하나님과, 또 서로 사이좋게 살았습니다. 그리고 하나님이 그들에게 식물을 음식으로 주셨기 때문에, 나는 동물들도 함께 평화롭게 살았을 거라고 상상합니다(창세기 1:30). 그러나 이 목가적인 장면은 아담과 하와가 죄를 지었을 때 파괴되었습니다(3:21-23). 이제 인간관계와 창조물 모두에서 우리는 지속적인 투쟁과 갈등을 봅니다.

하지만 이사야 선지자는 언젠가 “이리가 어린 양과 함께 살며 표범이 어린 염소와 함께 누우며 송아지와 어린 사자와 살진 짐승이 함께 있을”(11:6) 것이라고 우리에게 다시 확인시켜 줍니다. 많은 사람들은 그것을 예수님이 다시 오셔서 통치하는 미래의 날로 해석합니다. 주님이 다시 오시면 더 이상의 분열도 없을 것이고, “다시는 죽음이 없고......고통도 없을 것입니다. 이전 것들이 다 사라져버렸기 때문입니다”(요한계시록 21:4, 새번역). 그때에는 그 새로워진 땅에서 창조물들은 이전의 조화를 회복할 것이며, 모든 족속, 모든 나라, 모든 언어의 사람들이 함께 모여 하나님을 경배하게 될 것입니다(7:9-10, 22:1-5).

그때까지는, 하나님께서 우리를 도우셔서 깨어진 관계를 회복하고, 가능할 것 같지 않은 새 우정을 쌓아갈 수 있게 하실 것입니다.

Unlikely Friends

My Facebook friends often post endearing videos of unlikely animal friendships, such as a recent video I watched of an inseparable pup and pig, another of a deer and cat, and yet another of an orangutan mothering several tiger cubs.

When I view such heartwarmingly unusual friendships, it reminds me of the description of the garden of Eden. In this setting, Adam and Eve lived in harmony with God and each other. And because God gave them plants for food, I imagine even the animals lived peacefully together (GENESIS 1:30). But this idyllic scene was disrupted when Adam and Eve sinned (3:21–23). Now in both human relationships and the creation, we see constant struggle and conflict.

Yet the prophet Isaiah reassures us that one day, “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together” (11:6). Many interpret that future day as when Jesus comes again to reign. When He returns, there will be no more divisions and “no more death . . . or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (REVELATION 21:4). On that renewed earth, creation will be restored to its former harmony and people of every tribe, nation, and language will join together to worship God (7:9–10; 22:1–5).

Until then, God can help us to restore broken relationships and to develop new, unlikely friendships. ALYSON KIEDA
