잃었으나 다시 찾음

친척과 쇼핑을 하시던 장모님이 없어지셨다는 것을 알게 되었을 때 아내와 나는 무척 당황했습니다. 기억상실증과 정신적 혼란을 앓고 계신 장모님이 어떤 행동을 하실 지 알 수 없었기 때문입니다. 주변을 배회하고 계실까, 아니면 집 쪽으로 갈 것이라고 생각하고 아무 버스에나 올라타신 건 아닐까? “제발 어머니를 찾게 해주세요.”라고 하나님께 기도하며 장모님을 찾기 시작하면서 우리의 머릿속에는 최악의 상황들이 그려지고 있었습니다.

몇 시간 후 멀리 떨어진 곳에서 도로를 헤매고 계신 장모님이 발견되었습니다. 장모님을 찾게 된 것은 하나님의 큰 축복 이었습니다. 몇 달 후, 하나님은 장모님을 축복하셔서 여든 살의 나이에 예수 그리스도를 구주로 영접하게 하셨습니다.

예수님은 사람을 잃어버린 양에 비유하시며 말씀하십니다. “너희 중에 어떤 사람이 양 백 마리가 있는데 그 중의 하나를 잃으면 아흔아홉 마리를 들에 두고 그 잃은 것을 찾아내기까지 찾아다니지 아니하겠느냐 또 찾아낸 즉......, 벗과 이웃을 불러 모으고 말하되 나와 함께 즐기자 나의 잃은 양을 찾아내었노라 하리라”(누가복음 15:4-6).

목자는 양들의 숫자를 세고 한 마리 한 마리가 제대로 있는지 확인합니다. 자신을 그런 목자에 비유하셨던 예수님도 그와 똑같이 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 귀하게 여기십니다. 인생에서 방황하며 삶의 목적을 고민하고 찾던 우리가 언제 예수님을 영접하더라도 너무 늦은 것이 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리가 하나님의 사랑과 축복을 경험하기를 원하십니다.

Lost but Found

When we discovered that my mother-in-law had gone missing while shopping with a relative, my wife and I were frantic. Mom suffered from memory loss and confusion, and there was no telling what she might do. Would she wander the area, or hop onto any bus thinking it would take her home? Worst-case scenarios spun through our minds as we began to search for her, crying out to God, “Please find her.”

Hours later, my mother-in-law was spotted stumbling along a road, miles away. How God blessed us in being able to find her. Several months later, He blessed her: at eighty years of age, my mother-in-law turned to Jesus Christ for salvation.

Jesus, comparing humans to lost sheep, gives us this illustration: “Suppose [a shepherd] has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, . . . he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep” (LUKE 15:4–6).

Shepherds counted their sheep to make sure every one was accounted for. In the same way, Jesus, who likens himself to that shepherd, values each of us, young and old. When we’re wandering in life, searching, wondering about our purpose, it’s never too late to turn to Christ. God wants us to experience His love and blessings. - LESLIE KOH

두려움에서의 해방

우리의 몸은 두려움과 공포감에 반응합니다. 가슴에 무거운 돌을 얹고 있는 듯한 느낌, 심장이 요동치며 가쁜 숨을 몰아쉬는 것 등은 우리의 두려움을 보여주는 신호입니다. 이런 본능적인 몸의 반응은 우리로 불안감을 쉽게 떨치지 못하게 합니다.

예수님이 오천명을 먹이시는 기적을 베푸신 날 밤, 제자들은 엄청난 두려움을 느꼈습니다. 예수님은 홀로 남아 기도하시기 위해 제자들을 벳새다로 먼저 보내셨습니다. 한밤중에 바람에 맞서 노를젓던 제자들은 갑자기 물 위를 걸어오시는 예수님을 보았습니다. 주님을 유령으로 착각한 제자들은 큰 두려움에 빠졌습니다 (마가복음 6:49-50).

하지만 예수님은 제자들을 안심시키시고 두려워하지 말고 용기를 가지라고 말씀하셨습니다. 예수님이 배에 오르자 바람은 잦아들고 배는 뭍에 도착했습니다. 예수님이 그들에게 평안을 주셨을 때 제자들의 두려움은 모두 사라졌을 거라고 생각됩니다.

두려움에 빠져 숨쉬기조차 힘들 때, 우리는 예수님의 능력을 믿음으로 안심할 수 있습니다. 예수님이 우리의 두려움의 파도를 잠잠케 하시든지, 아니면 우리에게 그것에 맞설 힘을 주시든지, 주님은 “모든 지각에 뛰어난”(빌립보서 4:7) 주님의 평강의 선물을 우리에게 주실 것입니다. 그리고 주님이 우리를 두려움에서 해방시키실 때, 우리의 몸과 마음은 안식의 상태로 되돌아갈 수 있습니다.

The Release of Fear

Our bodies react to our feelings of dread and fear. A weight in the pit of our stomachs, along with our hearts pounding as we gulp for breath, signal our sense of anxiety. Our physical nature keeps us from ignoring these feelings of unease.

The disciples felt shockwaves of fear one night after Jesus had performed the miracle of feeding more than five thousand people. The Lord had sent them ahead to Bethsaida so He could be alone to pray. During the night, they were rowing against the wind when suddenly they saw Him walking on the water. Thinking He was a ghost, they were terrified (MARK 6:49–50).

But Jesus reassured them, telling them not to be afraid and to take courage. As He entered their vessel, the wind died down and they made it to the shore. I imagine that their feelings of dread calmed as they embraced the peace He bestowed.

When we’re feeling breathless with anxiety, we can rest assured in Jesus’s power. Whether He calms our waves or strengthens us to face them, He will give us the gift of His peace that “transcends all understanding” (PHILIPPIANS 4:7). And as He releases us from our fears, our spirits and our bodies can return to a state of rest. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

두려움 없이 나눔

우리 아들 재비어가 6살이었을 때, 내 친구가 이제 막 걷는 아기를 데리고 왔는데 재비어는 그에게 장난감 몇 개를 주고 싶어 했습니다. 나는 어린 아들이 관대하게 주는 것을 보고 기뻐했는데, 나중에는 남편이 여러 도시에서 여러 가게를 돌아다니며 찾은 동물인형까지 주는 것이었습니다. 내 친구는 그것이 아주 인기 있는 장난감인 것을 알아차리고는 정중하게 거절했지만, 재비어는 자기 선물을 친구 아들의 손에 쥐어 주고는 “우리 아빠는 같이 가지고 놀 장난감을 많이 주거든.” 이라고 말했습니다.

재비어가 자신 있게 주는 것을 나에게서 배웠다고 말하고 싶지만, 사실 나는 종종 하나님과 다른 사람들에게 내가 가진 것들을 나누어주지 않았습니다. 그러나 내 하나님 아버지께서 내가 갖고 있고 필요로 하는 모든 것을 나에게 주신다는 것을 기억하면 나누기가 훨씬 쉬워집니다.

구약에서 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님을 신뢰하는 마음으로 하나님이 공급하신 것 중의 일부를 레위 제사장들에게 나누어주어 그들이 다시 다른 사람들을 도울 수 있게 하라고 명령하셨습니다. 그러나 백성들이 그것을 거절하자 말라기 선지자는 그들이 하나님의 것을 도둑질하고 있다고 말했습니다(말라기 3:8-9). 하지만 그들이 기꺼이 베풂으로써 주님께서 공급하시고 보호하신다는 약속을 신뢰하는 것을 보여주었다면(10-11절), 다른 사람들이 그들을 하나님의 축복받은 백성으로 인정했을 것입니다(12 절).

우리가 재정이든 시간이든, 아니면 하나님이 우리에게 맡기신 재능을 관리하는 것이든, 주는 것은 예배의 행위가 될 수 있습니다. 자유롭게, 그리고 두려움 없이 주는 행위는 본원적으로 관대하게 베푸시는 사랑의 하나님 아버지의 돌보심을 우리가 확신한다는 것을 보여주는 것입니다.

Fearless Giving

When my son Xavier was six years old, a friend brought her toddler to visit and Xavier wanted to give him a few toys. I delighted in our little giver’s generosity, until he offered a stuffed animal my husband had searched several stores in different cities to find. Recognizing the high-demand toy, my friend tried to politely decline. Still, Xavier placed his gift into her son’s hands and said, “My daddy gives me lots of toys to share.”

Though I’d like to say Xavier learned his confident giving from me, I’ve often withheld my resources from God and others. But when I remember that my heavenly Father gives me everything I have and need, it’s easier to share.

In the Old Testament, God commanded the Israelites to trust Him by giving a portion of all He had supplied to the Levite priests, who would in turn help others in need. When the people refused, the prophet Malachi said they were robbing the Lord (MALACHI 3:8–9). But if they gave willingly, showing they trusted the Lord’s promised provision and protection (VV 10–11), others would recognize them as God’s blessed people (V 12).

Whether we’re managing our finances, our schedules, or the gifts God entrusted to us, giving can be an act of worship. Giving freely and fearlessly can show our confidence in the care of our loving Father—the ultimate generous Giver. - XOCHITL DIXON

우리의 확실한 기초

오랫동안 내가 사는 도시 사람들은 산사태가 발생하는 지역에 주택을 짓기도 하고 사기도 했습니다. 어떤 사람들은 불안정한 땅의 위험에 대해 알고 있었지만, 또 어떤 사람들은 전혀 듣지 못했습니다. “40년에 걸친 지질학자들의 경고와 안전한 주택 건설 보장을 위해 만들어진 도시 규제”는 설명되지 않거나 무시되었습니다 (가제트 신문, 콜로라도스프링스, 2016년 4월 27일). 그들 중 많은 집들에서 참으로 아름다운 경관을 볼 수 있었지만, 집 아래의 땅에는 재앙이 진행되고 있었습니다.

고대 이스라엘의 많은 사람들은 우상에서 돌이켜 살아 계신 참된 하나님을 찾으라는 주님의 경고를 무시했습니다. 구약성경은 그들의 불순종으로 말미암은 비극적인 결과를 기록하고 있습니다. 하지만 허물어져가는 그들 주위의 세상 속에서 주님은 그들이 주께로 돌이켜 주의 길을 따르면 용서와 희망을 갖게 해주겠다는 메시지를 전하며 계속 그의 백성들에게 다가가셨습니다.

이사야 선지자는 “네 시대에 평안함이 있으며 구원과 지혜와 지식이 풍성할 것이니 여호와를 경외함이 네 보배니라”(이사야 33:6) 라고 말했습니다.

구약 시대와 마찬가지로 오늘날에도 하나님은 우리에게 삶을 쌓아나갈 기초에 대한 선택권을 주셨습니다. 우리는 우리 자신의 욕망을 따를 수도 있고, 성경과 예수 그리스도의 인격 속에 드러난 하나님의 영원한 원칙들을 받아들일 수도 있습니다. “단단한 반석이신 그리스도 위에 나는 서 있습니다. 다른 모든 곳은 가라앉는 모래입니다” (에드워드 모트).

Our Sure Foundation

For many years, people in our city built and bought homes in areas subject to landslides. Some knew about the risk of the unstable land, while others were not told. “Forty years of warnings from geologists and city regulations created to ensure safe homebuilding” were unexplained or ignored ( The Gazette, Colorado Springs, April 27, 2016). The view from many of those homes was magnificent, but the ground beneath them was a disaster in the making.

Many people in ancient Israel ignored the Lord’s warnings to turn from idols and seek Him, the true and living God. The Old Testament records the tragic results of their disobedience. Yet, with the world crumbling around them, the Lord continued reaching out to His people with a message of forgiveness and hope if they would turn to Him and follow His way.

The prophet Isaiah said, “[The LORD] will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure” (ISAIAH 33:6).

Today, as in the Old Testament era, God has given us a choice about the foundation on which we will build our lives. We can follow our own desires, or we can embrace His eternal principles revealed in the Bible and in the person of Jesus Christ. “On Christ, the solid rock, I stand—all other ground is sinking sand” (EDWARD MOTE). - DAVID C. 올바른 곳에 꽃피우기

아버지는 내게 괭이를 주시면서 “잡초란 네가 원하지 않는 곳에서 자라는 식물이란다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다. 나는 완두콩들 사이에 “자발적으로” 생긴 옥수수를 그대로 두고 싶었지만, 농장에서 자란 아버지는 나에게 그 옥수수를 뽑아버리라고 하셨습니다. 그 외로운 옥수수는 단지 완두콩을 질식시키고 영양분을 빼앗아가는 일만 하게 될 뿐이었습니다.

사람은 식물이 아닙니다. 우리에게는 우리 자신의 생각이 있고, 하나님이 주신 자유의지가 있습니다. 그러나 때때로 우리는 하나님이 의도하시지 않은 곳에서 꽃을 피우려고 합니다.

사울왕의 아들이며 용사인 요나단 왕자도 그렇게 할 수 있었습니다. 요나단은 왕이 될 만한 모든 조건을 갖추고 있었습니다. 그러나 그는 하나님이 다윗을 축복하시는 것을 보았고, 자신의 아버지가 질투와 자만심을 가지고 있음을 알게 되었습니다(사무엘상 18:12-15). 그래서 결코 자신의 것이 되지 않을 왕위를 거머쥐려고 하지 않고, 대신 다윗의 가장 친한 친구가 되어 그의 생명까지 구해주었습니다(19:1-6; 20:1-4).

어떤 사람들은 요나단이 너무 많은 것을 포기하였다고 말할 것입니다. 그러나 당신은 자신이 어떻게 기억되기를 원하십니까? 왕권에 집착하다가 그것을 잃어버린, 야심 있는 사울처럼 기억되기를 원하십니까, 아니면 영광스러운 예수님의 조상이 될 사람의 생명을 보호한 요나단처럼 기억되기를 원하십니까?

하나님의 계획은 언제나 우리의 계획보다 더 낫습니다. 우리는 하나님의 계획에 대항해 싸워서 잘못된 곳에 자라나는 잡초처럼 될 수도 있고, 아니면 하나님의 지시에 따름으로 하나님의 정원에 있는 무성하고 열매가 가득한 식물처럼 될 수도 있습니다. 하나님은 그 선택권을 우리에게 남겨주셨습니다.

Blooming in the Right Spot

“A weed is any plant that grows where you don’t want it,” my father said, handing me the hoe. I wanted to leave the corn plant that had “volunteered” among the peas. But Dad, who had grown up on a farm, instructed me to pull it out. That lone cornstalk would do nothing but choke the peas and rob them of nutrients.

Human beings aren’t plants—we have minds of our own and God-given free will. But sometimes we try to bloom where God doesn’t intend us to be.

King Saul’s son, the warrior-prince Jonathan, could have done that. He had every reason to expect to be king. But he saw God’s blessing on David, and he recognized the envy and pride of his own father (1 SAMUEL 18:12–15). So rather than grasping for a throne that would never be his, Jonathan became David’s closest friend, even saving his life (19:1–6; 20:1–4).

Some would say that Jonathan gave up too much. But how would we prefer to be remembered? Like the ambitious Saul, who clung to his kingdom and lost it? Or like Jonathan, who protected the life of a man who would become an honored ancestor of Jesus?

God’s plan is always better than our own. We can fight against it and resemble a misplaced weed. Or we can accept His direction and become flourishing, fruitful plants in His garden. He leaves the choice with us. - TIM GUSTAFSON

심판을 이기는 긍휼

우리 아이들이 옥신각신하면서 서로 고자질하려고 내게 왔을 때, 나는 그들이 말하는 문제가 뭔지 듣기 위해 아이들을 떼어놓았습니다. 둘 다 잘못했기 때문에, 나는 대화를 끝낼 때 그들이 그렇게 싸운 것에 대해 어떤 식으로 하는 게 올바르고 공정하겠느냐고 각자에게 물어보았습니다. 아이들은 서로 상대방에게 벌을 주라고 하였습니다. 하지만 나는 그들의 기대와는 달리, 상대방에게 주었으면 하는 벌을 대신 그들 자신에게 주었습니다. 갑자기 아이들은 그 벌칙이 상대방에게 주려고 할 때는 적절하게 보였지만 본인들에게 내려지자 지금 얼마나 “불공정”하게 느껴지는지 모두 후회했습니다.

우리 아이들은 하나님이 경고하신 일종의 “긍휼 없는 심판”을 보여주었습니다(야고보서 2:13). 야고보는 부자나 자기 자신을 먼저 위하기보다는, 이웃 사랑하기를 우리 자신을 사랑하는 것 같이 하기를 하나님이 바라신다고 상기시켜 줍니다(8절). 또 그는 우리 자신의 이익을 위해 다른 사람들을 이용하거나, 우리에게 도움이 되지 않는 지위에 있는 사람들을 멸시하지 말고, 우리가 얼마나 많이 베풂을 입고 용서받았는지를 아는 사람처럼 행동하여 그 긍휼을 다른 사람들에게까지 확장시키라고 교훈합니다.

하나님은 관대하게 그분의 긍휼을 베풀어주셨습니다. 우리가 다른 사람들을 대할 때마다 주님께서 우리에게 보여주신 긍휼을 기억하고, 그 긍휼을 다른 사람들에게까지 확장하도록 합시다.

Mercy over Judgment

When my children were squabbling and came to me to tattle on one another, I took each child aside separately to hear their account of the problem. Since both were guilty, at the end of our chat I asked them each what they felt would be an appropriate, fair consequence for their sibling’s actions. Both suggested swift punishment for the other. To their surprise, I instead gave them each the consequence they had intended for their sibling. Suddenly, each child lamented how “unfair” the sentence seemed now that it was visited upon them—despite having deemed it appropriate when it was intended for the other.

My kids had shown the kind of “judgment without mercy” that God warns against (JAMES 2:13). James reminds us that instead of showing favoritism to the wealthy, or even to one’s self, God desires that we love others as we love ourselves (V 8). Instead of using others for selfish gain, or disregarding anyone whose position doesn’t benefit us, James instructs us to act as people who know how much we’ve been given and forgiven—and to extend that mercy to others.

God has given generously of His mercy. In all our dealings with others, let’s remember the mercy He’s shown us and extend it to others. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

안전띠를 매시오!

“기장이 좌석 벨트 착용 신호를 켰습니다. 이것은 비행기가 난기류 지역으로 들어서고 있다는 것을 의미합니다. 지금 즉시 좌석으로 돌아가 좌석 벨트를 단단히 매십시오.” 비행기 승무원은 거친 기류에 벨트를 하지 않은 승객이 다칠 수 있으므로 그에 필요한 경고 방송을 보냅니다. 좌석에 확실히 앉아있어야만 거친 난기류 지역을 안전하게 지나갈 수 있습니다.

우리의 앞길에 불안한 일들이 닥칠 때 대부분의 경우 인생은 우리에게 경고를 보내지 않습니다. 그러나 사랑하는 우리 하나님 아버지는 우리가 힘들어하는 것을 아시고 도와주시며, 우리의 염려나 상처, 두려움을 그분께로 가지고 오라고 권면하십니다. 성경은 말합니다. “우리에게 있는 대제사장은 우리의 연약함을 동정하지 못하실 이가 아니요 모든 일에 우리와 똑같이 시험을 받으신 이로되 죄는 없으시니라 그러므로 우리는 긍휼하심을 받고 때를 따라 돕는 은혜를 얻기 위하여 은혜의 보좌 앞에 담대히 나아갈 것이니라”(히브리서 4:15-16).

격동의 시기에 우리가 할 수 있는 최선의 일은 기도로 우리 하나님 아버지께 나아가는 것입니다. “때를 따라 돕는 은혜”라는 구절이 보여주는 것은 우리가 위협적인 순간들에도 하나님 앞에서 평온하게 “안전띠를 매고 있을” 수 있다는 것입니다. 왜냐하면 우리가 우리의 염려를 다른 모든 것보다도 뛰어나신 분께로 들고 가기 때문입니다! 인생이 불가항력적으로 느껴질 때 우리는 기도할 수 있습니다. 주님은 삶의 난기류 속에서 우리를 도와주십니다.

Buckling Up!

“The captain has turned on the seat belt sign, indicating that we are entering an area of turbulence. Please return to your seats immediately and securely fasten your seat belt.” Flight attendants give that warning when necessary because in rough air, unbuckled passengers can be injured. Secured in their seats, they can safely ride out the turbulence.

Most of the time, life doesn’t warn us of the unsettling experiences coming our way. But our loving Father knows and cares about our struggles, and He invites us to bring our cares, hurts, and fears to Him. The Scriptures tell us, “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most” (HEBREWS 4:15–16 NLT ).

In seasons of turbulence, going to our Father in prayer is the best thing we can do. The phrase “grace to help us when we need it”—means that in His presence we can be “buckled” in peace during threatening times, because we bring our concerns to the One who is greater than all! When life feels overwhelming, we can pray. He can help us through the turbulence. - BILL CROWDER

거미와 하나님의 임재

‘거미.’거미를 좋아하는 아이는 없겠지요. 적어도 잠자리에 들 시간에 자기들의 방에 거미가 있는 것을 좋아하지는 않을 것입니다. 딸아이가 잠자리에 들 준비를 할 때 거미 한 마리가 위험하게 침대 가까이에 있는 것을 갑자기 보고는, “아빠아아!!! 거미이이!!!!”라고 소리 질렀습니다. 내 굳은 결의에도 불구하고, 그 발 여덟 개 달린 침입자를 찾을 수 없었습니다. 나는 딸에게 “거미는 너를 해치지 않아”라고 안심시켜주었지만 딸은 믿지 않았습니다. 내가 2층 침대 머리맡에 서서 지켜주겠다고 하자 그제야 딸이 침대에 들어가겠다고 했습니다.

딸이 침대에 눕자 나는 딸의 손을 잡고 말했습니다. “아빠는 너를 많이 사랑한단다. 내가 바로 네 옆에 있어. 그런데 너 이거 아니? 하나님은 엄마 아빠보다도 너를 더 사랑하신단다. 그리고 아주 가까이 계시기 때문에, 무서울 때면 언제든 하나님께 기도하면 돼.” 그 말이 위로가 되었는지 딸은 곧 평화롭게 잠들었습니다.

성경은 하나님이 항상 가까이 계신다고 우리에게 반복해서 확신시켜주지만(시편 145:18; 로마서 8:38-39; 야고보서 4:7-8), 때때로 우리는 그것을 믿지 못합니다. 바울이 에베소교인들이 힘 있게 그 진리를 붙들 수 있도록 기도한 것도 아마 그 때문인 것 같습니다(에베소서 3:16). 그는 우리가 두려워할 때 하나님 곁에서 멀어질 수 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 그러나 그날 밤 딸의 손을 사랑스럽게 꼭 잡아주어 딸이 잠든 것과 같이, 사랑하는 우리 하나님 아버지도 기도로 언제나 우리와 아주 가까이 계십니다.

Of Spiders and God’s Presence

Spiders. I don’t know any kid who likes them. At least not in their rooms . . . at bedtime. But as she was getting ready for bed, my daughter spied one dangerously close to her bed. “Daaaad!!!!! Spiiiderrr!!!!!” she hollered. Despite my determination, I couldn’t find the eight-legged interloper. “He’s not going to hurt you,” I reassured her. She wasn’t convinced. It wasn’t until I told her I’d stay next to her top bunk and stand guard that she agreed to get in bed.

As my daughter settled in, I held her hand. I told her, “I love you so much. I’m right here. But you know what? God loves you even more than Daddy and Mommy. And He’s very close. You can always pray to Him when you’re scared.” That seemed to comfort her, and peaceful sleep came quickly.

Scripture repeatedly reassures us God is always near (PSALM 145:18; ROMANS 8:38–39; JAMES 4:7–8), but sometimes we struggle to believe it. Perhaps that’s why Paul prayed for the believers in Ephesus to have strength and power to grasp that truth (EPHESIANS 3:16). He knew that when we’re frightened, we can lose track of God’s proximity. But just as I lovingly held my daughter as she went to sleep that night, so our loving heavenly Father is always as close to us as a prayer. - ADAM HOLZ

위대한 의사

리쉬 만찬다 의사는 환자들에게 “어디에서 사세요?”라고 물어보면서 주소보다 더 많은 것을 알아내려고 합니다. 그는 어떤 패턴이 있는 것을 봐왔습니다. 그에게 도움을 받으러 오는 환자들은 종종 아주 열약한 환경에서 살고 있는데, 곰팡이, 해충, 그리고 독성물질들이 그들을 병들게 합니다. 그래서 만찬다는 소위 ‘흐름을 거슬러 가는 의사들’ 의 대변자가 되었습니다. 이 의료종사자들은 응급 처치를 하면서 동시에 보다 나은 건강을 위해 환자들과 함께 그들의 환경을 개선하는 일을 합니다.

예수님은 자신에게 오는 사람들을 고쳐주실 때(마태복음 4:23-24) 그들의 시야를 넓혀 당장 급한 육체적, 물질적인 필요 이상의 것을 보게 하셨습니다. 예수님은 산상 설교를 통해 의학적인 기적 그 이상을 베푸셨습니다(5:1-12). 예수님은 새로운 시각과 영적인 복의 약속으로 시작되는 복이 있는 사람의 정신과 마음의 태도 일곱 가지에 대해 말씀하셨습니다(3-9절). 그리고 잔인한 박해를 받으며 주님 안에서 소망과 안식처를 찾는 사람들이 복이 있다고 두 번 더 말씀하셨습니다(10-12절).

예수님의 말씀으로 인해 나는 다음과 같은 것들을 생각해봅니다. 나는 어디에서 살고 있는가? 나의 긴급한 육체적, 물질적인 필요를 채우는 것보다 더 큰 복이 내게 필요하다는 것을 나는 얼마나 깨닫고 있는가? 내가 기적을 갈망하는 것만큼, 예수님이 복이 있다고 하신 가난하고, 상하고, 굶주리고, 자비롭고, 평화를 추구하는 마음을 부러워하며 받아들이고 있는가?

The Great Physician

When Dr. Rishi Manchanda asks his patients, “Where do you live?” he’s looking for more than an address. He has seen a pattern. Those who come to him for help often live in conditions of environmental stress. Molds, pests, and toxins are making them sick. So Dr. Manchanda has become an advocate of what he calls Upstream Doctors. These are health care workers who, while providing urgent medical care, are working with patients and communities to get to the source of better health.

As Jesus healed those who came to Him (MATTHEW 4:23–24), He lifted their eyes beyond the need for urgent physical and material care. With His Sermon on the Mount He offered more than a medical miracle (5:1–12). Seven times Jesus described attitudes of mind and heart that reflect a well-being that begins with a new vision and promise of spiritual well-being (VV 3–9). Two more times he called blessed those who experience relentless persecution and find their hope and home in Him (VV 10–12).

Jesus’s words leave me wondering. Where am I living? How aware am I of my need for a well-being that is greater than my urgent need for physical and material relief? As I long for a miracle, do I embrace as enviable the poor, broken, hungry, merciful, peacemaking heart that Jesus calls blessed? - MART DEHAAN

충분하지 않나요?

교회에서 집으로 가는 길에 딸아이가 뒷자리에 앉아서 과자를 먹고 있었고, 다른 아이들은 그 과자를 같이 나누어 먹자고 애원했습니다. 나는 아이들의 대화를 전환시키려고 과자를
갖고 있는 딸에게 “오늘 교회 학교에서 무엇을 배웠니?”라고 물었습니다. 어떤 아이가 예수님께 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 드려서 예수님이 그것으로 오천 명이나 되는 사람들을 먹이셨기 때문에(요한복음 6:1-13), 빵과 물고기 바구니를 만들었다고 딸이 대답했습니다.

“그 음식을 나누어 먹은 아이는 정말착한 애였구나. 혹시 하나님이 너에게 과자를 나누어 먹으라고 하시는 게 아닐까?” 하고 물었습니다. “아니에요, 엄마.” 딸이 대답했습니다.

나는 계속 딸에게 과자를 혼자 다 먹지 말라고 권했습니다. 딸은 납득하지 못했습니다. “모두 먹기에는 충분하지 않아요!”

나누는 것은 어렵습니다. 우리 앞에 있는 것들을 움켜쥐고 있는 것이 더 쉽습니다. 아마 우리는 헤아려보고 나서 나누어줄 만큼 충분 하지 않다고 이유를 댈 것입니다. 그리고 남에게 주고 나면 내가 부족할 것이라고 예상합니다.

바울은 우리가 갖고 있는 모든 것이 “[우리가] 모든 일에 넉넉하여 너그럽기”를 원하시는 하나님에게서 온 것이라고 상기시켜줍니다 (고린도후서 9:10-11). 천국의 계산법은 풍부함의 셈법이지 부족함의 셈법이 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리가 남에게 넉넉하게 베풀더라도 부족함이 없도록 우리를 돌보아주시겠다고 약속하셨기 때문에 우리는 우리가 가진 것을 즐겁게 나눌 수 있습니다.

Not Enough?

On the way home from church, my daughter sat in the backseat enjoying Goldfish crackers as my other children implored her to share. Trying to redirect the conversation, I asked the hoarder of snacks, “What did you do in class today?” She said they made a basket of bread and fish because a child gave Jesus five loaves and two fish that Jesus used to feed more than 5,000 people (JOHN 6:1–13).

“That was very kind of the little boy to share. Do you think maybe God is asking you to share your fish?” I asked. “No, Momma,” she replied.

I tried to encourage her not to keep all the crackers to herself. She was unconvinced. “There is not enough for everyone!”

Sharing is hard. It is easier to hold onto what we see in front of us. Perhaps we do the calculation and reason there is simply not enough for everyone. And the assumption is that if I give, I will be left wanting.

Paul reminds us that all we have comes from God, who wants to enrich us “in every way so that [we] can be generous” (2 CORINTHIANS 9:10–11). The math of heaven isn’t a calculation of scarcity but of abundance. We can share joyfully because God promises to care for us even as we are generous to others. - LISA SAMRA
