좋은 계절

오늘은 지구 북반구에서 봄의 첫째 날입니다. 만약 호주에 산다면 가을의 첫째 날이 됩니다. 즉, 북반구의 춘분이요 남반구의 추분인 셈입니다. 오늘, 태양은 적도를 직각으로 비추며 낮과 밤의 길이가 전 세계적으로 거의 동일합니다.

새로운 계절은 많은 사람들에게 중요합니다. 어떤 이들은 새로운 계절이 가져다줄 것으로 기대하는 것들 때문에 그 때가 오기를 손꼽아 기다립니다. 어쩌면 당신은 또 하나의 겨울의 끝을 알리는 위스콘신의 봄을 달력에 이미 표시해놓았을지도 모르겠습니다. 혹은 멜버른에 살고 있는 사람들은 호주의 태양으로부터 구제해줄 가을이 빨리 오기를 바라고 있을 수도 있겠지요.

우리는 또한 날씨와 관련이 없는 인생의 계절도 지납니다. 전도서의 저자는 해 아래의 모든 활동에는 다 때가 있는데, 그것은 우리가 인생을 살아가는 동안 하나님이 정해주신 시간이라고 말합니다(3:1-11).

모세는 광야를 지나며 이스라엘 백성들을 인도한 후에, 그의 생애에 있어 새로운 계절에 대해 말하고는(신명기 31:2), 여호수아에게 지도자의 자리를 넘겨주었습니다. 그리고 바울은 로마에서 가택 연금을 당하는
동안 외로운 시기를 지냈습니다. 그때 그는 누군가 찾아오길 바랐지만 하나님이 “내 곁에”(디모데후서 4:17) 계신다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

삶의 계절과 관계없이 하나님의 위대하심과 도우심, 그리고 동행하심에 대해 감사를 드립시다.

A Good Season

Today is the first day of spring in the northern half of the world. If you live in Australia, it’s the first day of autumn—the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere and the autumnal equinox in the southern hemisphere. Today, the sun shines directly on the equator, and the hours of daylight and nighttime are nearly equal around the world.

New seasons are important for many people. Some count down the day because of what they hope the new season will bring. Perhaps you’ve been marking off a calendar for spring in Wisconsin to signal the end of another winter. Or maybe you live in Melbourne, and you can’t wait for autumn to bring relief from the Australian sun.

We also go through seasons of life that don’t have to do with the weather. The author of Ecclesiastes told us there is a season for every activity under the sun—a time appointed by God during which we live our lives (3:1–11).

Moses spoke of a new season in his life after he led the people of Israel through the wilderness (Deuteronomy 31:2), and he had to give up his leadership role to Joshua. And Paul faced a lonely season while he was under house arrest in Rome—asking for visitors but realizing that God was “at my side” (2 Timothy 4:17).

Regardless of the season of life, let’s give thanks to God for His greatness, His help, and His companionship. - DAVE BRANON

감사하는 마음의 기술

우리 결혼식 날 마티와 나는 “좋을 때나 나쁠 때, 아플 때나 건강할 때, 부유할 때나 가난할 때 변함없이 신실할 것”을 기쁜 마음으로 서약했습니다. 어떤 면에서는 기쁜 결혼식 날에 왜 나쁜 때나 병, 가난 같은 암울한 현실에 대한 서약까지 포함시킬까 좀 이상하게 느껴질 수도 있겠지만, 그것은 삶에 종종 “나쁜”

때가 있다는 사실을 강조해주기 위함입니다. 그러면 인생을 사는 동안 피할 수 없는 어려움에 봉착했을 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 할까요? 바울은 그리스도를 대신해서 우리에게 “범사에 감사하라”(데살로니가전서
5:18)고 강력히 권고합니다. 듣기만 해도 참 어렵게 느껴지는 말이지만, 하나님이 우리에게 감사하는 마음을 가지라고 권면하시는 데에는 충분한 이유가 있습니다. 감사하는 마음은 주님이 “선하시며 그의 인자하심이 영원하다”(시편 118:1)는 진리에 근거를 두고 있습니다. 주님은 고통 가운데 우리와 함께 하시며 우리에게 힘을 주십니다(히브리서 13:5-6). 그리고 우리를 사랑하시기에 시련을 통해 우리의 성품이 주님을 닮아가게 하십니다(로마서 5:3-4).

삶에 힘든 시기가 닥칠 때 감사하는 마음을 가지면, 우리는 하나님의 선하심에 집중하게 되고 시련을 극복할 수 있는 힘을 얻게 됩니다. 시편 기자처럼 우리도 “여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그의 인자하심이 영원함이로다”(시편 118:29)라고 노래할 수 있습니다.

The Art of a Grateful Heart

On our wedding day, Martie and I gladly vowed to be faithful “in good times as well as in bad, in sickness as well as in health, for richer or for poorer.” In a way it may seem strange to include vows about the bleak reality of bad times, sickness, and poverty on a cheerful wedding day. But it underscores the fact that life often has “bad” times.

So what are we to do when we face life’s inevitable difficulties? Paul urges us on behalf of Christ to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). As difficult as that may sound, there is good reason why God encourages us to embrace a spirit of gratitude. Gratitude is grounded in the truth that our Lord “is good” and “his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:1). He is present with us and strengthens us in the midst of trouble (Hebrews 13:5–6), and He lovingly uses our trials to grow our character into His likeness (Romans 5:3–4).

When life hits us with hard times, choosing to be grateful focuses our attention on the goodness of God and gives us the strength to make it through our struggles. With the psalmist, we can sing, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:29). - JOE STOWELL

제2차 세계대전 동안 기초훈련에 소집된 미국 사람들은 집을 멀리 떠나 훈련을 하면서 겪는 힘든 상황에 대처하기 위해 재미있는 편지를 보내는 일로 위안을 삼았습니다. 한 젊은이는 집으로 보낸 편지에서 예방 접종 과정을 멋진 과장을 섞어 이렇게 묘사했습니다. “두 군의관이 작살을 들고 우리를 쫓아와서는 우리를
붙잡아 바닥에 꼼짝 못하게 잡고, 한쪽 팔에 한 방씩 꽂았습니다.”

하지만 어떤 군인이 유머도 효과에 한계가 있다는 것을 깨닫기 시작했는데, 그때 성경 한 권을 받게 되었습니다. 그는 이렇게 편지했습니다. “나는 성경이 너무 좋아서 매일 밤 성경을 읽습니다. 나는 성경에서

아주 오래전, 추방되었던 유대인들이 수십 년 간의 바벨론 노예 생활을 끝내고 고향으로 돌아왔을 때 그들의 문제까지도 같이 가지고 온 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들이 예루살렘 성벽을 재건하기 위해 애쓰고 있을 때, 그들은 적군과 기근, 그리고 그들 자신의 죄라는 장애물에 부딪혔습니다. 그런 고통 가운데에서 그들은 하나님의 말씀에 의지했고, 말씀으로부터 많은 것들을 배우며 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 제사장들이 하나님의 율법책을 읽자 사람들은 감격하여 눈물을 흘렸습니다(느헤미야 8:9). 하지만 그들은 평안도 함께 얻었습니다. 느헤미야 총독은 그들에게 “근심하지 말라 여호와로 인하여 기뻐하는 것이 너희의 힘이니라”(10절)라고 말했습니다.

Letters Home

Far from home and training for World War II, American recruits in basic training turned to humor and correspondence to cope with the challenges they faced. In one letter home a young man described the vaccination process with wonderful exaggeration: “Two medical officers chased us with harpoons. They grabbed us and pinned us to the floor and stuck one in each arm.”

Yet one soldier began to realize that humor could only take him so far. Then he received a Bible. “I enjoy it very much and I read it every night,” he wrote. “I never realized you could learn so much from a Bible.”

Long ago, the Jewish exiles returned home after years of slavery in Babylon to find their problems came with them. As they struggled to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls, they faced opposition from enemies, famine, and their own sin. Amid their trouble, they turned to God’s Word. They were surprised at what they learned. When the priests read from the Book of the Law of God, the people were moved to tears (Nehemiah 8:9). But they also found comfort. Nehemiah the governor told them, “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (v. 10).

We don’t need to wait for trouble to hear from God. The Bible is where we learn about His character, His forgiveness, and His comfort. As we read it, we’ll be surprised at what God’s Spirit will show us in its pages. - TIM GUSTAFSON

한 젊은 남자가 비행기 좌석에 앉아 안절부절 못하고 있었습니다. 그는 비행기 창문 쪽을 불안한 눈길로 두리번거리다가 눈을 감고 심호흡을 하면서 자신을 안정시키려고 노력했습니다. 하지만 잘 되지 않았습니다. 비행기가 이륙하자 그는 그의 몸을 앞뒤로 천천히 흔들었습니다. 통로 건너편에 앉아있던 나이든 여성이 젊은이의 주의를 다른 데로 돌려 긴장을 풀어 주기 위해 자신의 손을 뻗어 그의 팔을 잡고 조용히 대화를 시작했습니다. “이름이 뭐예요?” “어디서 왔나요?” “아무 일 없을 거예요.” “아주 잘하고 있어요.” 그녀는 이와 비슷한 몇 마디를 속삭였습니다. 그녀는 그 젊은이에게 짜증을 내거나 무시할 수도 있었지만, 그에게 다가가 몇 마디 말을 하는 것을 택했습니다. 사소한 이야기들로 말입니다. 세 시간 후 비행기가 착륙하자 그는 “도와주셔서 너무 감사합니다.”라고 말했습니다.

온유한 마음씨를 보여주는 이 같은 아름다운 장면은 찾아보기가 어렵습니다. 친절은 많은 사람들에게서 자연스럽게 볼 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 우리의 중요 관심사는 대개 우리 자신이기 때문입니다. 그러나 “서로 친절하게 하며 불쌍히 여기라”(에베소서 4:32)고 바울 사도가 우리에게 촉구했을 때 그것이 전부 우리에게 달려 있다고 말한 것은 아니었습니다. 예수님을 믿음으로 우리에게 새 생명이 주어지면 성령님이 변화를 만들기 시작합니다. 친절은 우리의 생각과 태도를 새롭게 해주는 성령님의 지속적인 사역의 산물입니다(23절).

긍휼히 여기시는 하나님이 우리 마음에 역사하시면, 우리로 다른 사람들의 삶을 돌아보며 격려의 말을 속삭일 수 있게 해주십니다.

Whispering Words

The young man fidgeted as he sat down for his flight. His eyes darted back and forth to the aircraft windows. Then he closed his eyes and breathed deeply, trying to calm himself—but it didn’t work. As the plane took off, he slowly rocked back and forth. An older woman across the aisle from him put her hand on his arm and gently engaged him in conversation to divert his attention from his stress. “What’s your name?” “Where are you from?” “We’re going to be okay,” and “You’re doing well” were a few things she whispered. She could have been irritated with him or ignored him. But she chose a touch and a few words. Little things. When they landed three hours later, he said, “Thank you so much for helping me.”

Such Beautiful pictures of tenderheartedness can be hard to find. Kindness does not come naturally to many of us; our primary concern is often ourselves. But when the apostle Paul urged, “Be kind and compassionate to one another” (Ephesians 4:32), he was not saying it all depends on us. After we’ve been given a new life by our faith in Jesus, the Spirit begins a transformation. Kindness is the ongoing work of the Spirit renewing our thoughts and attitudes (v. 23).

The God of compassion is at work in our hearts, allowing us in turn to touch others’ lives by reaching out and whispering words of encouragement. - ANNE CETAS

놀라움에 초점을 맞춤

세상을 볼 때 오로지 잘못된 점들만 보는 경향을 가진 사람들이 있습니다. 그런데 ‘내셔널 지오그래픽’에서 일하는 사진작가 드윗 존스는 자기 직업을 이용하여 세상의 좋은 점들을 부각시켜 오고 있습니다. 그는 계속 기다리고 관찰하면서 늘 있던 풍경이나 사물에 한 줄기 빛이 비치거나 그것들을 다른 시각에서 봄으로써 갑자기 놀라운 장면이 연출되는 순간을 포착합니다. 그는 자기 카메라를 사용하여 인간과 자연의 가장 평범한 모습 속에서 아름다움을 찾아냅니다.

Wonders in Focus

Some of us are inclined to look at the world and see only what’s wrong. DeWitt Jones is a National Geographic photographer who has used his profession to celebrate what’s right about the world. He waits and watches until a shaft of light or turn of perspective suddenly reveals a wonder that had been there all along. He uses his camera to find beauty in the most common faces of people and nature.

If anyone had reason to focus on the wrongs of the world, Job did. After losing all that had given him joy, even his friends became his accusers. Together their voices taunted him for not admitting that he was suffering for sins he was hiding. When Job cried out to the heavens for help, God remained silent.

Finally, from within the chaos of a whirlwind and the darkness of a storm, God asked Job to consider wonders of nature that reflect a wisdom and power far beyond our own (Job 38:2–4).

Would He now ask us? What about something as natural as the ways of a dog, cat, fluttering leaf, or blade of grass? Could a shaft of light, or a turn of perspective, reveal—even in our pain—the mind and heart of a Creator who has been with us and for us all along? - MART DEHAAN

치유를 위해 드러냄

나는 어린 시절에 아버지가 황무지를 개간하는 것을 지켜보았습니다. 처음 쟁기로 갈 때 큰 돌이 나오곤 했는데 아버지가 날라다 버렸습니다. 그러고는 흙이 더 잘게 부서지도록 땅을 다시 갈고 또 갈았습니다. 쟁기로 매번 갈 때마다 작은 돌들이 나오면 아버지는 옆으로 던졌습니다. 이렇게 밭을 여러 번 왔다 갔다 하는 작업이 계속되었습니다.

은혜 안에서 성장하는 과정도 이와 비슷합니다. 우리가 처음 믿음을 갖게 되면 “큰” 죄들이 드러납니다. 그러면 하나님께 이를 고백하고 용서를 받습니다. 그러나 해가 지나며 하나님의 말씀이 우리의 내면 깊이
들어와 자리 잡게 되면 성령께서 다른 죄들도 드러나게 하십니다. 전에는 별로 대수롭지 않게 여겼던 작고 사소하게 보이는 마음의 죄들이 추하고 파괴적인 태도나 행동으로 드러납니다. 교만, 자기연민, 불평, 비열함, 편견, 앙심, 이기적인 탐욕 같은 죄들이 그런 것들입니다.

하나님은 죄 하나하나를 드러내어 옆으로 던져버리십니다. 하나님은 치유하시려고 드러내십니다. 숨어있던 해로운 속마음이 겉으로 드러날 때 우리도 시편 기자 다윗처럼 기도할 수 있습니다. “여호와여 나의 죄악이 크오니 주의 이름으로 말미암아 사하소서”(시편 25:11).

고통스러워도 겸손히 드러내는 것이 우리 영혼에 유익합니다. 주님은 그렇게 “죄인들에게 바른 길을 가르치시고 겸손한 자들을 옳은 길로 인도하시며 그들에게 자기 뜻을 가르치십니다”(8-9절, 현대인의 성경).

Revealed to Be Healed

As a boy, I watched my father plow fields that had never been cultivated. On the first pass the plowshare would turn up large rocks that he hauled away. Then, he would plow the field again, and then again, to further break up the soil. With each pass the plow turned up other, smaller rocks that he cast aside. The process continued, requiring many passes through the field.

Growth in grace can look like a similar process. When we first become believers, some “big” sins may be exposed. We confess them to God and accept His forgiveness. But as the years pass by, and as God’s Word passes through us and sinks into our innermost being, the Holy Spirit brings other sins to the surface. Sins of the spirit once thought to be mere peccadilloes—small, seemingly unimportant offenses—are revealed as ugly, ruinous attitudes and actions. Sins like pride, self-pity, complaining, pettiness, prejudice, spite, self-serving indulgence.

God reveals each sin so He can cast it aside. He reveals to heal. When harmful hidden attitudes come to the surface, we can pray as the psalmist David did, “For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great” (Psalm 25:11).

Humbling exposure, though painful, is good for the soul. It’s one of the ways in which He “instructs sinners in his ways.” He “guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way” (vv. 8–9). - DAVID H. ROPER

기도의 선물 나누기

“저희 병든 오빠를 위해 여러분 모두가 기도해주셨는데 그 전까지는 기도가 선물이라는 것을 정말로 몰랐습니다. 여러분의 기도가 얼마나 위로가 되었는지 말로 다 표현할 수 없어요!”

로라는 암 진단을 받은 그녀의 오빠를 위해 기도해준 우리 교회 성도들에게 감사한다고 눈물을 글썽이며 나에게 말했습니다. 그녀는 이어서 “여러분의 기도가 너무나 힘든 시간을 보내던 오빠에게 큰 힘이 되었고 가족 모두에게도 용기를 주었습니다.”라고 말했습니다.

사람들을 사랑하는 가장 좋은 방법 중의 하나는 그들을 위해 기도하는 것입니다. 예수님이 가장 대표적인 예입니다. 신약 성경은 예수님이 사람들을 위해 기도하는 것을 많이 보여주는데, 더욱이 우리를 위해 하나님 아버지께로 계속 나아가는 것을 보여줍니다. 로마서 8장 34절은 “그는 하나님 우편에 계신 자요 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 자시니라”라고 말합니다. 십자가에서 헌신적인 사랑을 보여주신 후에도 부활하여 승천하신 주 예수 그리스도는 바로 이 순간에도 우리를 위해 기도하시면서 우리를 향한 사랑을 끝없이 보여주십니다.

우리 주위에는 예수님의 본을 따라 그들의 삶에 하나님의 도우심과 간섭하심을 구하며 사랑으로 기도해야 할 사람들이 많이 있습니다. 우리가 하나님께 그들을 위해 기도하도록 도와 달라고 간구하면 하나님은 들어주실 것입니다. 사랑의 주님이 우리에게 힘주셔서 오늘 다른 사람들에게 기도의 선물을 풍성히 나눌 수 있게 해주시기를 바랍니다.

Giving the Gift of Prayer

“I didn’t realize what a gift prayer was until my brother was sick and you all prayed for him. I cannot tell you what a comfort your prayers were!”

Laura had tears in her eyes as she thanked me for the prayers of the people in our church for her brother, who was facing a cancer diagnosis. She continued, “Your prayers have strengthened him in this difficult time and have been an encouragement to our entire family.”

One of the best ways to love others is to pray for them. Jesus is our ultimate example in this. The New Testament tells us about Jesus praying for others on many occasions, and even shows us that He continues to come to the Father on our behalf. Romans 8:34 says that He “is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” Even after showing such selfless love at the cross, the risen and ascended Lord Jesus Christ continues to express His care for us by praying for us at this very moment.

All around us are people who need us to follow Jesus’s example and love them with our prayers, inviting God’s help and intervention in their lives. We can ask God to help us pray for them, and He will! May our loving Lord strengthen us to generously give the gift of our prayers for others today. - JAMES BANKS

협력하여

왜 일 년에 오백만 명이 넘는 사람들이 돈을 쓰며 수 마일에 이르는 장애물 코스의 수직 벽에 오르고 진흙탕에 뒹굴고 물이 쏟아져 내려오는 수직 파이프 안쪽을 기어오를까요? 어떤 사람들은 이것을 인내력의 한계를 시험하거나 두려움을 극복하려는 개인적인 도전으로 봅니다. 또 어떤 사람들은 참가한 경쟁자들이 서로 돕고 지원하는 팀워크의 매력 때문이라고 합니다. 한 사람은 이곳을 “판단 금지 구역”이라고 부르며 낯선 사람 들이 경주를 완주하도록 서로 격려하는 곳이라고 불렀습니다(워싱턴포스트, 스테파니 카노위츠).

성경은 우리가 예수님 안에서 믿음대로 살려면 팀워크를 추구해야 한다고 말합니다. “서로 돌아보아 사랑과 선행을 격려하며 모이기를 폐하는 어떤 사람들의 습관과 같이 하지 말고 오직 권하여 그날이 가까움을 볼수록 더욱 그리하자”(히브리서 10:24-25).

우리의 목표는 믿음의 경주에서 “일등”이 되는 것이 아니라 함께 달리며 좋은 본이 되고 도움의 손길을 내밀기도 하면서 실제로 격려가 되어주는 것입니다.

언젠가 이 세상에서의 삶을 마치는 날이 올 것입니다. 그때까지 매일 서로 격려하고, 도울 준비를 갖추며, 힘을 합해 일하도록 합시다.

Pulling Together

Why do more than five million people a year pay money to run several miles over an obstacle course where they must ascend vertical walls, slog through mud, and climb up inside a vertical pipe with water pouring down on them? Some see it as a personal challenge to push their limit of endurance or conquer their fears. For others, the attraction is teamwork where competitors help and support each other. One person called it “a no-judgment zone” where people who are strangers will reach out to help each other finish the race (Stephanie Kanowitz, The Washington Post).

The Bible urges us to pursue teamwork as a model of living out our faith in Jesus. “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24–25).

Our goal is not to “finish first” in the race of faith, but to reach out in tangible ways of encouragement by setting an example and lending a helping hand along the way.

The day will come when we complete our life on earth. Until then, let’s spur each other on, be ready to help, and keep pulling together every day. - DAVID C. MCCASLAND

세 글자에 담긴 믿음

비관적인 성향이 있는 나는 삶의 상황들이 어떻게 될지에 대해 부정적인 결론들을 쉽게 내립니다. 하고 있던 어떤 일이 잘 안 되면 다른 일들도 모두 잘못될 것이라고 쉽게 판단하고, 심지어는 몸을 굽혀 손이 발가락에 닿게 하는 전혀 관련 없는 일도 이젠 할 수 없을 거라고 쉽게 단정합니다. 그리고 슬프게도, 내가 아무것도 제대로 하지 못하는 형편없는 엄마라고 여깁니다. 한가지를 잘못함으로 여러 다른 일에서 내 감정에 불필요한 영향을 미치게 되는 것입니다.

하박국 선지자가 하나님께서 보여주신 것에 어떻게 반응했을지 쉽게 상상할 수 있습니다. 그는 하나님의 백성들에게 닥칠 고난들을 보고 나서 절망에 빠질 만한 충분한 이유가 있었습니다. 길고 험난한 날들이
그들 앞에 놓여있었으니까요. 상황은 참으로 암울했습니다. 과일도 없고, 고기도 없고, 안락한 시설도 없었습니다. 나도 그의 말에 희망 없는 비관의 늪에 빠지게 되지만 그의 짧은 세 글자 ‘그러나’가 나를 다시 흔들어 깨웁니다. “(그러나) 나는 여호와로 말미암아 즐거워하며”(하박국 3:18). 하박국은 다가올 모든 고난을
바라보았음에도 불구하고 단순히 하나님이 어떤 분이라는 이유만으로 기뻐할 수 있었습니다.

우리는 우리의 문제를 때로 과장할 때가 있지만, 하박국은 실제로 극심한 어려움을 당하였습니다. 하박국이 그런 순간에도 하나님을 찬양할 수 있었다면 우리도 할 수 있을 것입니다. 절망의 깊은 수렁에 빠졌을 때 우리는 우리를 건지시는 하나님을 바라볼 수 있습니다.

Three-Lettered Faith

With a tendency toward pessimism, I quickly jump to negative conclusions about how situations in my life will play out. If I’m thwarted in my efforts on a work project, I’m easily convinced none of my other projects will be successful either, and—even though utterly unrelated—I will probably never be able to touch my toes comfortably. And, woe is me, I’m an awful mother who can’t do anything right. Defeat in one area unnecessarily affects my feelings in many.

It’s easy for me to imagine how the prophet Habakkuk might have reacted to what God showed him. He had great cause for despair after having seen the coming troubles for God’s people; long and arduous years lay ahead. Things really did look dismal: no fruit, no meat, and no creature comforts. His words lure me into a pessimistic bed of hopelessness until he jars me awake again with a small three-letter word: yet. “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord” (Habakkuk 3:18). Despite all the hardships he anticipated, Habakkuk found cause for rejoicing simply because of who God is.

While we might be prone to exaggerate our problems, Habakkuk truly faced some extreme hardships. If he could summon praise for God in those moments, perhaps we can too. When we’re bogged down in the depths of despair, we can look to God who lifts us up. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

부끄럼 없는 충성

스포츠팬들은 자기 팀의 응원가를 즐겨 부릅니다. 로고가 그려진 옷을 입고 페이스북에 자기가 좋아하는 팀에 대한 글을 올리고 친구들과 그 팀에 관해 이야기합니다. 그것으로 그 팬들의 충성심이 얼마나 큰지 알 수 있습니다. 나의 디트로이트 타이거즈 모자들과 셔츠, 그리고 대화하는 것을 보면 나도 그렇게 하는 그들과 같은 부류에 속한 것을 알 수 있습니다.

그러한 스포츠 충성심은 우리에게 진정 최고로 충성할 대상은 주님이어야 한다는 것을 깨닫게 해줍니다. 시편 34편을 읽으며 나는 그 부끄럼 없는 충성심에 대해 생각해봅니다. 이 시편에서 다윗은 우리의 관심을 이 세상 어떤 것보다 더 중요한 분께로 이끌어줍니다.

다윗은 “내가 여호와를 항상 송축함이여”(1절)라고 말합니다. 그러나 우리는 마치 하나님이 우리에게 진리와 빛과 구원의 근원이 아닌 분처럼 살아가며 그 부족함으로 고민합니다. 다윗은 “내 입술로 항상 주를 찬양하리이다”(1절)라고 말합니다. 그러나 우리는 그분을 찬양하기보다 이 세상의 것들을 더 많이 찬양합니다. 다윗은 “내 영혼이 여호와를 자랑하리니”(2절)라고 말합니다. 하지만 우리는 예수님께서 우리를 위해 하신 일보다 우리의 작은 성공들을 자랑합니다.

우리가 응원하는 팀들, 우리의 관심사들, 우리가 성취한 것들을 즐기는 것이 잘못된 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 우리의 가장 귀한 찬양은 우리 주님께로 향해야 합니다. “나와 함께 여호와를 광대하시다 하며 함께 그 이름을 높이세”(3절).

Unashamed Loyalty

Sports fans love to sing their teams’ praises. By wearing logos, posting notes on Facebook about their beloved teams, or talking about them with friends, fans leave no doubt where their loyalty stands. My own Detroit Tigers caps, shirts, and conversations indicate that I am right there with those who do this.

Our sports loyalties can remind us that our truest and greatest loyalty must be to our Lord. I think of such unashamed loyalty when I read Psalm 34, where David draws our attention to Someone vastly more vital than anything else on earth.

David says, “I will extol the Lord at all times” (v. 1), and we are left to wonder about the gaps in our lives when we live as if God is not our source of truth, light, and salvation. He says, “His praise will always be on my lips” (v. 1), and we think about how many times we praise things of this world more than we praise Him. David says, “My soul shall make its boast in the Lord” (v. 2 nkjv), and we realize that we boast about our own small successes more than what Jesus has done for us.

It’s not wrong to enjoy our teams, our interests, and our accomplishments. But our highest praise goes to our Lord. “Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together” (v. 3). - DAVE BRANON
