우연한 지혜

몇 년 전 한 여인이 폭력사건에 관한 뉴스를 보던 십대 초반의 아들과 있었던 일을 얘기해주었습니다. 그녀는 본능적으로 리모트 컨트롤을 찾아 텔레비전 채널을 돌리면서 “이런 것은 볼 필요가 없어.”라고 다소 퉁명스럽게 말했습니다. 그러자 말다툼이 이어졌고, 마침내 그녀는 아 들 에 게 그 의 마 음 을 “무엇이든지 옳으며, 무엇이든지 정결하며, 무엇이든지 사랑스러운.......”(빌립보서 4:8) 것으로 채워야 한다고 말했습니다. 저녁식사 후에 이 부부가 뉴스를 시청하고 있는데, 5살 난 딸이 갑자기 뛰어 들어오더니 텔레비전을 꺼버렸습니다. 아이는 최대한 “엄마”의 목소리를 흉내 내며 말했습니다. “이런 것은 볼 필요가 없어. 이제 성경에 있는 그것들을 생각해봐!”

어른으로서 우리는 아이들보다는 뉴스를 더 잘 받아들이고 소화할 수 있습니다. 그럴지라도 이 부부의 딸이 조금 전의 엄마의 지시를 흉내낸 것은 재미있기도 하면서 지혜로운 것이었습니다. 정서적으로 안정된 어른일지라도 삶의 어두운 면에 꾸준히 접하게 되면 영향을 받을 수 있습니다. 빌립보서 4장 8절에서 바울이 언급한 것들을 묵상하면, 우리가 세상의 세태를 볼 때 때때로 우리에게 정착하는 어두움들에 대한 강력한 해독제가 될 수 있습니다.

우리의 마음을 무엇으로 채울 것인가를 신중히 결정하는 것은 우리 마음을 지킬 뿐 아니라 하나님을 영화롭게 하는 훌륭한 방법입니다.

Accidental Wisdom

A few years ago, a woman shared with me a story about finding her preteen son watching news coverage of a violent event. Instinctively, she reached for the remote and changed the channel. “You don’t need to be watching that stuff,” she told him rather abruptly. An argument followed, and eventually she shared that he needed to fill his mind with “whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely . . .” (PHILIPPIANS 4:8). After dinner, she and her husband were watching the news when suddenly their five-year-old daughter burst in and turned off the television. “You don’t need to be watching that stuff,” she declared in her best “mom” voice. “Now, think about those Bible things!”

As adults, we can better absorb and process the news than our children. Still, the couple’s daughter was both amusing and wise when she echoed her mother’s earlier instructions. Even well-adjusted adults can be affected by a steady diet of the darker side of life. Meditating on the kind of things Paul lists in Philippians 4:8 is a powerful antidote to the gloom that sometimes settles on us as we see the condition of our world.

Making careful decisions about what fills our minds is an excellent way to honor God and guard our hearts as well. - RANDY KILGORE

밤잠을 설침

무엇 때문에 밤에 깨어 있게 됩니까? 최근에 나는 어떤 문제에 대한 해결책을 고민하다가 침대에서 이리 저리 뒤척이며 밤잠을 설치고 있습니다. 결국에는 다음날에 있을 어려운 문제들을 다루기 위해 필요한 충분한 휴식을 취하지 못하게 될까봐 조바심이 나기 시작했습니다!

익숙하게 들립니까? 문제가 있는 인간 관계나 불확실한 미래, 그것이 무엇이든지 간에 우리는 예외 없이 언젠가는 걱정에 빠질 때가 있습니다.

다윗왕은 시편 4편을 쓸 때 분명히 고난 중에 있었습니다. 사람들이 근거 없는 비난으로 그의 명예를 더럽히고 있었고(2절) 그의 통치권에 의문을 갖고 있는 사람들도 있었습니다(6절). 다윗은 아마도 그렇게 불공평하게 취급되는 것에 대하여 화가 났을 것입니다. 분명히 그는 그것을 생각하며 밤을 지새웠을 것입니다. 그러나 우리는 여기에서 “내가 평안히 눕고 자기도 하리니”(8절)라는 놀라운 구절을 봅니다.

찰스 스펄전은 8절을 이렇게 아름답게 설명합니다. “그렇게 누워서......[다윗은] 자신을 다른 손길에 맡겼습니다. 그는 완벽하게 그렇게 했습니다. 아무런 보살핌이 없는 가운데서도 그는 잠들었습니다.
완전한 신뢰가 여기에 있었습니다.” 무엇이 이런 신뢰를 갖도록 고무해주었을까요? 다윗은 하나님께서 그의 기도에 응답해주실 것을 처음부터 확신하고 있었고(3절), 하나님께서 그를 택하셔서 사랑하셨기 때문에 하나님이 성실히 그의 필요를 채워주실 것을 확신하였습니다.

걱정거리들이 우리를 위협할 때에 하나님의 능력과 임재 안에서 우리가 안식할 수 있도록 하나님께서 도와주시기를 소원합니다. 하나님의 주권과 사랑의 팔 안에서 우리는 “누워 잘” 수 있습니다.

Tossing and Turning

What keeps you awake at night? Lately I’ve been losing sleep, tossing and turning on my bed, trying to work out a solution to an issue. Eventually I begin fretting about not getting enough rest to handle the challenges of the next day!

Sound familiar? Troubled relationships, an uncertain future, whatever it is—we all give in to worry at one point or another.

King David was clearly in distress when he penned Psalm 4. People were ruining his reputation with groundless accusations (V 2). And some were questioning his competency to rule (V 6). David probably felt angry for being treated so unfairly. Surely he could have spent nights stewing about it. Yet we read these remarkable words: “In peace I will lie down and sleep” (V 8).

Charles Spurgeon explains verse 8 beautifully: “In thus lying down, . . . [David] resigned himself into the hands of another; he did so completely, for in the absence of all care, he slept; there was here a perfect trust.” What inspired this trust? From the start, David was confident that God would answer his prayers (V 3). And he was sure that since God had chosen to love him, He would lovingly meet his needs.

May God help us to rest in His power and presence when worries threaten. In His sovereign and loving arms, we can “lie down and sleep.” - POH FANG CHIA

바부쉬카 여인

“바부쉬카 여인”은 1963년 존 에프 케네디 대통령 암살을 둘러싼 미스테리들 중의 하나입니다. 당시 여러 행사들을 촬영한 영화사진기에 찍힌 그녀가 누구인지는 결국 알아낼 수 없었습니다. 오버코트와 스카프(‘바부쉬카’라는 러시아 스카프와 비슷한)를 두른 이 신비로운 여인이 누구인지 전혀 밝혀지지 않았고, 그녀가 찍은 사진도 공개된 적이 없습니다. 수십 년 동안 역사가들과 학자들은 “바부쉬카 여인”이 11월의 그 암울했던 날에 대해 이야기를 하지 못한 것은 두려움 때문이 아닐까 추측해왔습니다.

하지만 예수님의 제자들이 왜 숨었는지 이해하기 위해 추측할 필요는 없습니다. 제자들은 스승을 죽인 관리들에 대한 두려움 때문에 비겁하게도 앞으로 나와 자신들의 경험을 당당히 드러내기를 꺼려했습니다 (요한복음 20:19). 그러나 그럴 때에 예수님이 무덤에서 다시 살아나시고 성령님이 곧 오셔서, 한때 겁이 많았던 예수님의 제자들은 더 이상 계속 침묵하지 않았습니다! 오순절 날에 성령의 능력을 입은 시몬 베드로는 “그런즉 이스라엘 온 집은 확실히 알지니 너희가 십자가에 못 박은 이 예수를 하나님이 주와 그리스도가 되게 하셨느니라”(사도행전 2:36)라고 선포하였습니다.

예수님의 이름으로 담대하게 말할 수 있는 기회는 담대한 인격의 소유자나 목회 훈련을 받은 사람들에게만 제한되어 있지 않습니다. 우리가 예수님의 복음을 전할 수 있게 해주시는 분은 우리 안에 거하시는 성령님이십니다. 성령님의 능력으로 우리는 다른 사람들에게 우리의 구주를 전할 수 있는 용기를 경험할 수 있습니다.

The Babushka Lady

The “Babushka Lady” is one of the mysteries surrounding the 1963 assassination of US President John F. Kennedy. Captured on film recording the events with a movie camera, she has proven to be elusive. This mystery woman, wearing an overcoat and scarf (resembling a Russian babushka ), has never been identified and her film has never been seen. For decades, historians and scholars have speculated that fear has prevented the “Babushka Lady” from telling her story of that dark November day.

No speculation is needed to understand why Jesus’s disciples hid. They cowered in fear because of the authorities who had killed their Master (JOHN 20:19)— reluctant to come forward and declare their experience. But then Jesus rose from the grave. The Holy Spirit soon arrived and you couldn’t keep those once-timid followers of Christ quiet! On the day of Pentecost, a Spirit-empowered Simon Peter declared, “Let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah” (ACTS 2:36).

The opportunity to boldly speak in Jesus’s name is not limited to those with daring personalities or career ministry training. It is the indwelling Spirit who enables us to tell the
good news of Jesus. By His strength, we can experience the courage to share our Savior with others. - BILL CROWDER

진퇴 양난

어머니가 내 새끼고양이 벨벳이 부엌 조리대 위에서 집에서 만든 빵을 게걸스럽게 먹고 있는 것을 보았습니다. 어머니는 몹시 화가 나서 고양이를 문 밖으로 쫓아내버렸습니다. 몇 시간 후 우리는 잃어버린 고양이를 찾으러 앞뒤 마당을 돌아다녔지만 찾을 수 없었습니다. 그때 바람 속에 희미하게 고양이 울음소리가 들려 포플러 나무 꼭대기를 쳐다보니, 검은 물체가 기울어진 가지에 붙어 있는 것을 볼 수 있었습니다.

자기가 한 짓 때문에 어머니가 화난 것을 피해 달아난 벨벳은 더 위태로운 곤경에 빠져버렸습니다. 잘못을 피해 도망가다가 우리 자신을 위험에 빠뜨리는 것 같은 이와 비슷한 일이 우리에게도 가끔씩 일어나지 않습니까? 그럴 때에도 하나님은 우리를 구하러 오십니다.

요나 선지자는 니느웨로 가서 전하라고 하는 하나님의 부르심에 불순종하고 달아나다가 커다란 물고기가 그를 삼켰습니다. “요나가 물고기 뱃속에서 그의 하나님 여호와께 기도하여 이르되 내가 받는 고난으로 말미암아 여호와께 불러 아뢰었더니 주께서 내게 대답하셨고”(요나 2:1-2). 하나님은 요나의 간구를 들으시고 “그 물고기에게 명하시니, 물고기가 요나를 뭍에다가 뱉어 냈습니다”(10절, 새번역). 그런 후 하나님은 요나에게 다시 한 번 기회를 주셨습니다(3:1).

벨벳을 내려오게 하려고 노력하다가 진이 빠진 우리는 지역 소방서에 도움을 요청했습니다. 가장 긴 사다리를 최대한으로 뻗친 후 친절한 소방대원이 올라가서 가지 끝에 앉아 있는 내 새끼고양이를 구해내어 내 팔에 안전하게 안겨주었습니다.

아무리 높고 깊어도, 하나님은 그분의 구원의 사랑으로 불순종하는 우리를 구해주십니다!

Up a Tree

My mother discovered my kitten Velvet atop the kitchen counter, devouring homemade bread. With a huff of frustration, she scooted her out the door. Hours later, we searched our yard for the missing cat without success. A faint meow whistled on the wind, and I looked up to the peak of a poplar tree where a black smudge tilted a branch.

In her haste to flee my mother’s frustration over her behavior, Velvet chose a more precarious predicament. Is it possible that we sometimes do something similar—running from our errors and putting ourselves in danger? And even then God comes to our rescue.

The prophet Jonah fled in disobedience from God’s call to preach to Nineveh, and was swallowed up by a great fish. “From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. He said: ‘In my distress I called to the LORD , and he answered me’ ” (JONAH 2:1–2). God heard Jonah’s plea and, “commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land” (V 10). Then God gave Jonah another chance (3:1).

After exhausting our efforts to woo Velvet down, we summoned the local fire department. With the longest ladder fully extended, a kind man climbed high, plucked my kitten from her perch, and returned to place her safely in my arms.

용서의 기도

1960년, 인종차별 폐지정책에 따라 6살의 루비 브리지스가 아프리카계 미국 어린이로는 처음으로 미국 남부에 위치한 백인 학생만 다니던 공립 초등학교에 입학하게 되었습니다. 몇 달 동안 매일 연방 보안관들이 루비를 호위해 그녀를 저주하고 협박하고 모욕하는 성난 학부모들 사이를 무사히 지나갈 수 있도록 했습니다. 무사히 학교 안으로 들어가면, 교실에는 루비와 바바라 헨리 단 두 사람만 있었는데, 바바라는 부모들이 자기 아이들이 루비와 함께 수업 듣는 것을 막는 동안 기꺼이 그녀를 가르치려 한 유일한 선생님이었습니다.

유명한 소아정신과 의사 로버트 콜즈는 루비가 경험한 두려움과 스트레스를 극복할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 몇 달 동안 그녀를 만났습니다. 그는 루비가 매일 걸어서 학교를 오가는 동안 다음과 같이 기도한다는 말을 듣고 놀랐습니다. “하나님, 그들을 용서해주세요. 그들은 자기가 무엇을 하는지 알지 못합니다”(누가복음 23:34 참조).

십자가 위에서 하신 예수님의 말씀은 주님에게 퍼부어진 증오와 모욕보다 더 강력했습니다. 주님의 생애에서 가장 괴로웠던 그 시간에 우리 주님은 그의 제자들에게 가르쳐주셨던 근본적인 대응을 몸소 보여주셨습니다. “너희 원수를 사랑하며 너희를 미워하는 자를 선대하며 너희를 저주하는 자를 위하여 축복하며 너희를 모욕하는 자를 위하여 기도하라...... 너희 아버지의 자비로우심 같이 너희도 자비로운 자가 되라”(누가복음 6:27-28,36).

이런 놀라운 접근법은 우리가 예수님이 우리에게 주신 능력 있는 사랑, 곧 가장 깊은 증오보다도 더 강력한 사랑을 생각할 때에만 가능합니다.

A Prayer of Forgiveness

In 1960, six-year-old Ruby Bridges was the first African-American child to integrate an all-white public elementary school in the American South. Every day for months, federal marshals escorted Ruby past a mob of angry parents shouting curses, threats, and insults at her. Safely inside, she sat in a class- room alone with Barbara Henry, the only teacher willing to instruct her while parents kept their children from attending school with Ruby.

Noted child psychologist Robert Coles met with Ruby for several months to help her cope with the fear and stress she experienced. He was amazed by the prayer Ruby said every day as she walked to school and back home. “Please, God, forgive them because they don’t know what they’re doing” (SEE LUKE 23:34).

The words of Jesus spoken from the cross were stronger than the hatred and insults hurled at Him. In the most agonizing hours of His life, our Lord demonstrated the radical response He taught His followers: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you . . . . Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (LUKE 6:27–28, 36).

This remarkable approach is possible only as we consider the powerful love Jesus has given us—love stronger than even the deepest hatred.

새로운 공동체

내 친구 캐리의 다섯 살짜리 딸 마야가 놀이 시간을 맞이하는 방법은 참 흥미롭습니다. 그 아이는 다른 장난감 세트에 있는 인형들을 모두 섞은 뒤 새로운 그룹을 만들어냅니다. 마야의 상상 속 세상에서는 모든 것이 함께 합니다. 이 인형들은 마야의 사람들입니다. 마야는 인형들이 서로 크기와 모양이 달라도 함께 놓여 있을 때 가장 행복해한다고 믿습니다.

마야의 창의력은 나에게 교회를 향한 하나님의 목적을 상기시켜 줍니다. 오순절 날 누가는 우리에게 “그때에 경건한 유대인들이 천하 각국으로부터 와서 예루살렘에 머물러 있더니”(사도행전 2:5)라고 말합니다. 이 사람들은 문화와 언어가 서로 다른 곳으로부터 왔지만, 성령께서 오셔서 그들을 교회라는 새로운 공동체로 만드셨습니다. 그때부터 그들은 예수님의 죽음과 부활로 말미암아 하나가 된 한 몸으로 간주되었습니다.

이 새 몸의 지도자들은 예수님께서 이 세상에 계시는 동안 함께 이끌어오신 일련의 사람들, 곧 주님의 제자들이었습니다. 만약 예수님께서 그들을 하나로 묶지 않으셨다면, 그들이 하나가 되는 일은 결코 없었을 것입니다. 그리고 이제 더 많은 사람들, “약 삼천”(2:41) 명이 그리스도를 따르는 자들이 되었습니다. 성령님의 도움으로, 한때 나뉘어졌던 그들이 “모든 물건을 통용”하게 되었습니다(44절). 그들은 가진 것들을 기꺼이 서로 나누려고 했습니다.

성령님은 계속해서 사람들 무리 간의 간격을 줄이고 있습니다. 우리가 늘 사이좋게 지내거나 또 서로를 잘 이해하거나 하지 못할지도 모르지만, 그리스도를 믿는 신자로서 우리는 서로 하나입니다.

A New Community

My friend Carrie’s five-year-old daughter, Maija, has an interesting approach to playtime. She loves mixing together dolls from different playsets to come up with a new community. In the world of her imagination, everything belongs together. These are her people. She believes they are happiest when they’re together, despite being different sizes and shapes.

Her creativity reminds me of God’s purpose for the church. On the day of Pentecost, Luke tells us, “Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven” (ACTS 2:5). Though these people were from different cultures and spoke different languages, the Holy Spirit’s arrival made them a new community: the church. From then on, they would be considered one body, unified by the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The leaders of this new body were a group of men Jesus brought together during His time on earth—His disciples. If Jesus hadn’t united them, more than likely they would never have come together. And now more people—“about three thousand” (2:41)—had become Christ-followers. Thanks to the Holy Spirit, this once divided group “had everything in common” (V 44). They were willing to share what they had with each other.

The Holy Spirit continues to bridge the gaps between people groups. We might not always get along, nor readily understand one another. But as believers in Christ, we belong

설령

인생의 여정에서 우리에게 엄청난 타격이 올 때도 있지만, 기적이 일어날 때도 있습니다.

바벨론에 포로로 잡혀 있던 세 젊은이는 그 땅을 지배하는 무시무시한 왕 앞에 서서, 어떤 상황에도 그들 위에 우뚝 솟은 거대한 금 신상에 절하지 않겠다고 담대히 선포했습니다. 그들은 같이 이렇게 선언했습니다. “우리가 섬기는 하나님이 계시다면 우리를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에서 능히 건져내시겠고 왕의 손에서도 건져내시리이다 그렇게 아니하실지라도 우리가......금 신상에게 절하지도 아니할 줄을 아옵소서”(다니엘 3:17-18).

이 세 젊은이 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고는 그 맹렬히 타는 풀무불에 던져졌지만, 하나님은 그들을 기적적으로 구해주셔서 그들의 머리카락 하나도 그을리지 아니하였고 겉옷에는 불탄 냄새도 없었습니 (19-27절). 그들은 죽을 각오가 되어 있었고, 하나님을 향한 그들의 믿음은 확고했습니다. “설령” 하나님이 그들을 구해주시지 않았더라도 말입니다.

하나님은 ‘설령’ 우리가 사랑하는 사람이 낫지 않고, ‘설령’ 우리가 직업을 잃게 되고, ‘설령’ 우리가 박해를 받게 되더라도 우리가 하나님께 매달려 있기를 원하십니다. 하나님은 우리를 삶 가운데 위험으로부터 구해주실 때도 있지만, 그렇게 하지 않으실 때도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 확고히 붙잡을 수 있는 진실은 “우리가 섬기는 하나님은 능히 하실 수 있고,” 우리를 사랑하시고, 모든 불같은 시련과 모든 ‘설령’의 경우에도 우리와 함께 하신다는 것입니다.

Even If

Sometimes life deals us a tremendous blow. Other times the miraculous happens.

Three young men, captives in Babylon, stood in front of the fear-some king of that land and boldly proclaimed that under no circumstances would they worship the giant image of gold towering above them. Together they declared: “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know . . . we will not . . . worship the image” (DANIEL 3:16–18).

These three men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—were hurled into the fiery furnace; and God miraculously delivered them so that not a hair of their head was singed and their clothing was smoke-free (VV 19–27). They had been prepared to die but their trust in God was unwavering—“even if” He had not saved them.

God desires that we cling to Him— even if our loved one isn’t healed, even if we lose our job, even if we are persecuted. Sometimes God rescues us from danger in this life, and sometimes He doesn’t. But the truth we can hold firmly is this: “The God we serve is able,” loves us, and is with us in every fiery trial, every even if. - ALYSON KIEDA

흘러넘침

“안 돼! 안 돼! 안 돼! 정말 안 돼!” 나는 절규했습니다. 하지만 조금도 도움이 되지 못했습니다. 변기 물을 한 번 더 내림으로써 배수구가 막힌 문제를 멋지게 해결하려 했던 것이 내가 의도했던 바와는 정반대의 결과를 빚어내고 말았습니다. 변기의 손잡이를 누르는 순간 내가 잘못했다는 것을 알았습니다. 그리고 물이 흘러넘칠 때 나는 무기력하게 서 있었습니다.

우리 자녀들이 우유를 따르다가 가늠을 잘못해서 하얀 액체가 온 사방에 넘친 적이 얼마나 많습니까. 차 트렁크 안에서 2리터짜리 소다 병이 굴러다니고 있는 것을 기억하지 못해......그 병이 터져버리는 놀라운 일도 있습니다.

그렇습니다. 흘리는 것은 거의 결코 좋은 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 단 한 가지 예외가 있습니다. 바울 사도는 그들 안에서 ‘소망’이 자연스럽게 흘러 나오는 성령이 충만한 사람들을 묘사하는데 이 ‘흘러넘침’의 이미지를 사용하고 있습니다(로마서 15:13). 나는 우리 삶 속에 주님이 강하게 임하셔서 삶이 기쁨과 평강과 믿음으로 넘치도록 채워지는, 그 같은 그림을 좋아합니다. 그렇게 된다면, 실제로 우리가 하나님 아버지에 대한 확신을 즐거이 뿜어내고 표현하지 않을 수 없을 것입니다. 그것은 우리 삶의 아름답고 밝은 시절 동안일 수 있고, 아니면 우리의 삶이 뒤죽박죽일 때일 수도 있습니다. 어느 쪽이든, 그 맨 위에서 찰랑거리는 것은 그것으로 “흠뻑 젖은” 우리 주변 사람들에게 전해지는 생명에 찬 소망입니다.

Overflowing

“No! No! No! NO!” I screamed. It didn’t help. Not one bit. My brilliant solution for our plugged problem—flushing again—accomplished exactly the opposite of what I’d intended. I knew I had made a mistake the second I pushed the lever down. And I stood helplessly as water overflowed.

How many times have our kids tried to pour milk and misjudged the process, with white liquid flowing everywhere. Or maybe we failed to remember that a two-liter bottle of soda just rolled around in the trunk . . . with explosively startling results.

No, spills are almost never a good thing. But there might be just one exception. The apostle Paul uses that image, overflowing , to describe a people so full of God’s Spirit that what naturally spills out of them is hope (ROMANS 15:13). I love that picture, of being filled to the brim with joy, peace, and faith because of His powerful presence in our lives. So much so, in fact, that we can’t help but exude and express winsome confidence in our heavenly Father. That might be during the beautiful, sunny seasons of our lives. Or when the proverbial cup of our lives gets jostled. Either way, what sloshes out over the top is life-giving hope to those around us who are “drenched” by it. - ADAM HOLZ

하나님의 선하심을 찬양하라

우리 성경 공부 모임에서 누군가가 “우리들 자신의 시편을 써봅시다!”라고 제안했습니다. 처음에는 글 쓰는 재간이 없다고 이의를 제기하는 사람들도 있었지만, 격려를 주고받은 후 모두 다 하나님이 어떻게 자신의 삶 속에 역사해 오셨는지를 이야기하는 감동적인 시편들을 썼습니다. 시련이나 보호하심, 공급하심, 심지어 고통이나 눈물로부터 오래 지속되는 메시지들이 터져나와 우리 시편들에 매력적인 주제들을 제공해주었습니다. 시편 136편처럼, 우리의 각 시편은 ‘하나님의 사랑은 영원히 지속된다’는 진리를 드러내 보여주었습니다.

글로 쓰든 노래로 부르든 말로 하든, 우리 모두에게는 하나님의 사랑에 대해 말할 수 있는 이야기가 있습니다. 우리 중 어떤 사람들은 하나님이 어떻게 자기 백성들을 포로에서 건져내고 그의 원수들을 물리쳤는지를 말한 시편 136편 기자처럼 극적이거나 강렬한 경험을 했을 수도 있습니다(10-15절). 그리고 다음과 같이 단순히 하나님의 놀라운 창조를 묘사하는 사람들도 있을 것입니다. “지혜로 하늘을 지으신 이에게......땅을 물 위에 펴신 이에게......큰 빛을 지으신 이에게......해로 낮을 주관하신 이에게...... 달과 별들로 밤을 주관하게 하신 이에게”(5-9절).

하나님이 누구시며 어떤 일들을 하셨는지 기억하면 그분을 영화롭게 하는 찬양과 감사를 하게 됩니다. 그럴 때 우리는 ‘사랑이 영원토록 지속’되는 주님의 선하심에 관하여 “시와 찬송과 신령한 노래들로 서로 화답”(에베소서 5:19)할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑을 경험한 것을 당신 자신의 찬양의 노래로 바꾸고 주님의 끝없는 선하심이 흘러넘치는 것을 즐기십시오.

Praising God’s Goodness

Someone in our Bible-study group suggested, “Let’s write our own psalms!” Initially, some protested that they didn’t have the flair for writing, but after some encouragement everyone wrote a moving poetic song narrating how God had been working in their lives. Out of trials, protection, provision, and even pain and tears came enduring messages that gave our psalms fascinating themes. Like Psalm 136, each psalm revealed the truth that God’s love endures forever.

We all have a story to tell about God’s love—whether we write or sing or tell it. For some, our experiences may be dramatic or intense—like the writer of Psalm 136 who recounted how God delivered His people from captivity and conquered His enemies (VV 10–15). Others may simply describe God’s marvelous creation: “who by his understanding made the heavens . . . spread out the earth upon the waters . . . made the great lights— . . . the sun to govern the day . . . the moon and stars to govern the night” (VV 5–9).

Remembering who God is and what He has done brings out praise and thanksgiving that glorifies Him. We can then “[speak] to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit” (EPHESIANS 5:19) about the goodness of the Lord whose love endures forever ! Turn your experience of God’s love into a praise song of your own and enjoy an overflow of His never-ending goodness. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

따라가는 자유

고등학교 때 크로스컨트리 코치가 경주 전에 나에게 조언한 적이 있습니다, “선두에 서려고 하지 마라. 선두 주자들은 거의 대부분 빨리 지치게 된다.” 그 대신에 코치는 가장 빨리 달리는 주자들 뒤에 가깝게 있으라고 제안했습니다. 그들에게 선두를 달리게 하면서 나는 경주를 잘 마치는데 필요한 정신적 육체적 힘을 아낄 수 있었습니다.

선두에 서는 것은 지치는 일일 수 있지만, 선두를 따라가는 것은 자유로울 수 있습니다. 이 점을 알게 되면서 나의 달리기는 좋아졌지만, 이것이 어떻게 그리스도인의 제자도에 적용되는지 깨닫는 데에는 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸습니다. 나는 살면서 예수님을 믿는 신자가 된다는 것이 ‘아주 열심히’ 노력하는 것을 의미한다고 생각하는 경향이 있었습니다. 그리스도인이면 이래야 한다고 내 스스로 정한 힘에 부치는 기대치를 추구하면서, 나는 단순히 주님을 따르는 가운데 발견되는 기쁨과 자유를 무심코 놓치고 있었습니다(요한복음8:32,36).

그러나 우리는 우리 자신의 삶을 스스로 영위하도록 만들어지지 않았으며, 예수님도 자기 계발 프로그램을 시작하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 그 대신 주님을 찾음으로 우리가 갈망하는 쉼을 얻을 것이라고 약속하셨습니다(마태복음 11:25-28). 성경이나 정교한 일련의 규범들을 철저히 공부할 것을 강조하는 다른 많은 종교지도자들과는 달리, 예수님은 단순히 주님을 앎으로써 하나님을 알게 된다고 가르치셨습니다 (27절). 주님을 찾을 때, 우리는 우리의 무거운 짐이 벗겨지고(28-30절), 우리의 삶이 변화되는 것을 보게 됩니다.

우리의 온유하고 겸손한 지도자이신(29절) 주님을 따르는 것이 하나도 힘이 들지 않기 때문에, 그것은 희망과 치유의 길입니다. 주님의 사랑 안에서 쉴 때 우리는 자유롭습니다.

Free to Follow

My high school cross-country coach once advised me before a race, “Don’t try to be in the lead. The leaders almost always burn out too quickly.” Instead, he suggested I stay close behind the fastest runners. By letting them set the pace, I could conserve the mental and physical strength I’d need to finish the race well.

Leading can be exhausting; following can be freeing. Knowing this improved my running, but it took me a lot longer to realize how this applies to Christian discipleship. In my own life, I was prone to think being a believer in Jesus meant trying really hard . By pursuing my own exhausting expectations for what a Christian should be, I was inadvertently missing the joy and freedom found in simply following Him (JOHN 8:32, 36).

But we weren’t meant to direct our own lives, and Jesus didn’t start a self-improvement program. Instead, He promised that in seeking Him we will find the rest we long for (MATTHEW 11:25–28). Unlike many other religious teachers’ emphasis on rigorous study of Scripture or an elaborate set of rules, Jesus taught that it’s simply through knowing Him that we know God (V 27). In seeking Him, we find our heavy burdens lifted (VV 28–30) and our lives transformed.

Because following Him, our gentle and humble Leader (V 29), is never burdensome—it’s the way of hope and healing. Resting in His love, we are free. - MONICA BRANDS
