내 눈을 열어주소서

이스탄불의 아름다운 코라 교회에 처음 갔을 때에는 천장에 있는 비잔틴 프레스코 화법의 그림과 모자이크 속에 성경 이야기 몇 개가 묘사되어 있다는 것을 알 수 있었지만 모르고 지나친 부분이 많이 있었습니다. 그러나 두 번째 갔을 때에는 안내해주는 사람이 있어서 전에 놓쳤던 부분들에 대해 자세한 설명을 듣고 금방 모든 것이 완전히 이해되었습니다. 예를 들어, 첫 번째 복도의 그림들은 누가복음에 기록된 예수님의 생애를 그린 것이었습니다.

성경을 읽을 때 때때로 우리는 기본적인 이야기들은 잘 이해합니다. 그러나 성경의 자세한 부분들을 잘 엮어서 하나의 완성된 이야기로 만들어주는 연결 역할은 누가 해줄까요? 물론 성경 주석과 참고서들이 있지만 우리에게는 누군가 우리의 눈을 열어 하나님의 놀라운 계시의 말씀을 보아서 알게 해주는 그런 안내자가 필요합니다. 우리의 안내자는 바로 이 “모든 것”을 우리에게 가르쳐주시는 성령님입니다(요한복음 14:26). 바울 사도는 “오직 성령께서 가르치신 것으로 영적인 일”을 설명한다고 기록하고 있습니다(고린도전서 2:13).

성경을 쓰신 분이 그 안의 놀라운 것들을 직접 우리에게 보여주신다니 얼마나 놀라운지요! 하나님은 우리에게 글로 기록된 성경을 주시고 계시로 보여주실 뿐만 아니라, 성경을 깨닫고 배우는 것도 도와주십니다. 그러므로 우리도 시편 기자처럼 이렇게 기도합시다. “내 눈을 열어서 주의 율법에서 놀라운 것을 보게 하소서”(시편 119:18).

Open My Eyes

The first time I went to the gorgeous Chora Church in Istanbul, I was able to figure out some Bible stories from the Byzantine frescos and mosaics on the ceiling. But there was much I missed. The second time, however, I had a guide. He pointed to all the details I had previously missed, and suddenly everything made perfect sense! The first aisle, for instance, depicted the life of Jesus as recorded in the gospel of Luke.

Sometimes when we read the Bible we understand the basic stories, but what about the connections—those details that weave Scripture into the one perfect story? We have Bible commentaries and study tools, yes, but we also need a guide—someone to open our eyes and help us see the wonders of God’s written revelation. Our guide is the Holy Spirit who teaches us “all things” (JOHN 14:26). Paul wrote that He explains “spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words” (1 CORINTHIANS 2:13).

How wonderful to have the Author of the Book to show us the wonders of it! God has not only given us His written Word and His revelation but He also helps us to understand it and learn from it. So let us pray with the psalmist, saying, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law” (PSALM 119:18). - KEILA OCHOA

시계와 달력

우리 아버지는 58세에 돌아가셨습니다. 그 이후로 기일이 되면 나는 아버지를 생각하며 아버지가 내 삶에 끼치신 영향들을 되돌아봅니다. 이제 아버지와 함께 살아 온 날보다 아버지 없이 살아온 세월이 더 길다는 것을 알게 되니 나의 삶도 너무 짧다는 생각이 들기 시작했습니다.

생각해보면 우리는 과거 한 때에 있었던 사건과 그로 말미암은 감정들 때문에 힘들어하기도 합니다. 우리는 시계와 달력으로 시간을 재지만 그 때의 사건들로 시간을 기억합니다. 우리의 가장 깊은 마음속의 감정이 건드려지는 삶의 순간들마다 우리는 기쁨과 상실, 축복, 고통, 성공, 실패 같은 감정을 경험하게 됩니다.

성경은 “백성들아 시시로 그를 의지하고 그의 앞에 마음을 토하라 하나님은 우리의 피난처시로다”(시편 62:8) 라고 우리를 격려해줍니다. 하지만 이 확신에 찬 말씀은 편안함 가운데 나온 것이 아니었습니다. 다윗은 적들에게 포위된 상황에서 이것을 기록했습니다(3-4절). 그런 가운데에서도 그는 하나님의 변함없는 사랑 (12절)은 우리가 처하는 어떤 형편보다도 더 크다는 것을 상기시키면서 하나님 앞에서 조용히 기다렸습니다(1,5절).

무슨 일을 만나도 우리에게는 이런 확신이 있습니다. 우리 하나님이 우리와 함께 하시며 그분이 인생의 모든 순간에 우리를 넉넉히 인도해주십니다. 삶 가운데 엄청난 위협이 닥쳐와도 하나님은 정확한 시간에 우리를 도와주실 것입니다.

Clocks and Calendars

My father died at 58 years of age. Ever since then, I pause on the date he died to remember Dad and reflect on his influence in my life. When I realized I had lived more of life without my dad than with him, I began pondering the brevity of my own life.

On reflection, we may wrestle with both an event in time and the feelings it stirs within us. Though we measure time with clocks and calendars, we remember times because of events. In the moments of life that trigger our deepest emotions, we can experience joy, loss, blessing, pain, success, failure.

The Scriptures encourage us: “Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge” (PSALM 62:8). This confident statement did not occur in a time of ease. David wrote these words while surrounded by enemies (VV 3–4). Still, he waited quietly before God(vv. 1, 5) reminding us that God’s unfailing love (V 12) is greater than any of the times of struggle we may face.

In every event, we have this confidence: Our God stands with us, and He is more than adequate to carry us through all of life’s moments. When the times of life threaten to overwhelm us, His help will be right on time. - BILL CROWDER

“아무거나 씹는” 시기

얼마 전 아내가 나에게 선물한 래브라도 리트리버 강아지를 우리는 맥스라고 이름 지었습니다. 어느 날 맥스와 함께 서재에 있는데 책상에 앉아 일에 열중하던 내 뒤에서 종이를 찢는 소리가 들렸습니다. 돌아보니 책 한 권이 바닥에 펼쳐져 있고 맥스가 종이 한 장을 입에 물고는 미안해하는 표정을 짓고 있었습니다.

수의사는 맥스가 지금 “아무거나 씹는 시기”라고 말했습니다. 강아지는 젖니가 빠지고 새 이가 날 때 거의 아무거나 입에 넣고 씹어 잇몸의 가려움증을 가라앉힌다고 합니다. 우리는 맥스가 해로운 것을 씹지 않도록 주의하며 다른 좋은 것을 씹도록 가르쳐주곤 합니다.

맥스의 씹으려는 충동과 그를 책임지고 지켜보는 내 모습을 보며 우리의 생각과 마음속에서 우리는 무엇을 “씹고” 있는가 하는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 책을 읽고 인터넷을 뒤지고 텔레비전을 볼 때 우리가 영원한 우리의 영혼에게 무엇을 먹이고 있는지 주의 깊게 생각해보는지요? 성경은 우리에게 이렇게 권면합니다. “갓난아기들 같이 순전하고 신령한 젖을 사모하라 이는 그로 말미암아 너희로 구원에 이르도록 자라게 하려 함이라 너희가 주의 인자하심을 맛보았으면 그리하라”(베드로전서 2:2-3). 그리스도의 사람으로 성장하려고 애쓰는 사람이라면 매일 하나님의 말씀과 진리로 자신을 채워야 합니다. 그래야만 그리스도 안에서 성숙해질 수 있습니다.

The “Chewing” Years

My wife recently gave me a Labrador retriever puppy we named Max. One day when Max was spending time with me in my study, I was concentrating at my desk and heard the sound of paper ripping behind me. I turned to find a guilty-looking puppy with a book wide open and a page dangling from his mouth.

Our veterinarian tells us that Max is going through his “chewing years.” As puppies lose their milk teeth and permanent ones grow, they soothe their gums by chewing almost anything. We have to watch Max carefully to ensure he isn’t gnawing on something that could harm him, and we point him to healthy alternatives.

Max’s urge to chew—and my responsibility to watch him—cause me to think about what we “chew on” in our minds and hearts. Do we carefully consider what we are feeding our eternal souls when we read or surf the web or watch TV? The Bible encourages us, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good” (1 PETER 2:2–3). We need to fill ourselves daily with God’s Word and truth if we are to thrive as followers of Christ. Only then can we grow to maturity in Him. - JAMES BANKS

멈춤

친구와 나는 파도가 규칙적으로 밀려오는 바닷가 모래 위에 앉아 있었습니다. 멀리서 해가 지는데 파도는 차례로 밀려와 매번 우리의 발가락 바로 앞까지 와서는 잔물결을 남기며 돌아갔습니다. 친구가 미소 지으며 말했습니다. “나는 바다가 좋아. 자기가 움직이니까 난 가만히 있어도 되잖아.”

참으로 멋진 생각입니다. 우리 중 많은 사람들은 자기가 하던 일을 쉽게 ‘멈추지’ 못합니다. 노력을 멈추면 자신의 존재 가치가 사라질 것 같은 두려운 마음에 쉼 없이 일하고 또 일하고, 앞만 향해 계속 나아갑니다. 아니면 우리가 멈추면, 피하려고 애써온 늘 상존하는 현실을 마주하게 될 거라는 두려움 때문인지도 모르겠습니다.

시편 46:8-9에서 하나님은 전능하신 팔을 들어 그분의 권능을 보여주십니다. “와서 여호와의 행적을 볼지어다...... 그가 땅 끝까지 전쟁을 쉬게 하심이여 활을 꺾고 창을 끊으며 수레를 불사르시는도다.” 쉬지 않으시는 하나님은 우리의 복잡한 일상 속에 평온함을 만들어내기 위해 일하십니다.

그리고 나서 10절에서는 “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다”라고 말씀합니다.

물론 이리 저리 뛰어다니면서 하나님을 알 수도 있습니다. 그러나 시편 기자는 그렇게 애쓰지 말라고 권고하면서 하나님에 대한 다른 지식을 우리에게 일러줍니다. 그것은 하나님이 쉬지 않으시기 때문에 우리는 멈추어 잠잠히 있을 수 있다는 것입니다. 그리고 우리의 궁극적인 가치와 보호와 평안은 하나님의 권능에서 온다는 것입니다.

Stop

My friend and I sat in the sand, near the ever-rhythmic ocean. As the sun sank in the distance, wave after wave curled, paused and then rippled toward our extended toes, stopping just short each time. “I love the ocean,” she smiled. “It moves so I don’t have to.”

What a thought! So many of us struggle to stop . We do, do, do and go, go, go, somehow afraid that if we cease our efforts we will cease to be. Or that by stopping we will expose ourselves to the ever-present realities we work to keep at bay.

In Psalm 46:8–9, God flexes His omnipotent muscles, putting His power on display. “Come and see what the LORD has done . . . . He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.” God is a busy God, who works to create calm within the chaos of our days.

And then in verse 10 we read, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Of course it’s possible to know God while running here and there. But the psalmist’s invitation to cease striving beckons us into a different kind of knowing. A knowing that we can stop—and still be—because God never stops. A knowing that it is God’s power that gives us ultimate value, protection, and peace. - ELISA MORGAN

중단된 교제

크고 슬픈 외침이 어두운 오후의 공기를 꿰뚫었습니다. 예수님의 발 앞에 모인 친구들과 사랑하는 사람들이 슬퍼하는 소리도 이 소리에 묻혀 들리지 않았을 거라고 생각됩니다. 이 소리는 예수님 양쪽에서 죽어가는 죄수들의 신음 소리도 압도했을 것입니다. 그리고 그것을 들은 모든 사람들이 분명히 깜짝 놀랐을 것입니다.

“엘리 엘리 라마 사막다니.” 예수님은 골고다의 치욕의 십자가 위에서 고통과 철저한 절망감으로 그렇게 부르짖으셨습니다 (마태복음 27:45-46).

“나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까.”

나는 이보다 더 마음이 아픈 말을 생각할 수 없습니다. 영원 전부터 예수님은 하나님 아버지와 완전한 교제를 유지해오셨습니다. 하나님과 예수님은 함께 우주를 만드시고, 그분들의 형상대로 인류를 만드시고 구원을 계획하셨습니다. 영원 전부터 하나님과 예수님은 완전한 교제를 나누지 않으신 적이 한 번도 없었습니다.

그런데 이때 십자가의 고통이 예수님에게 계속 견디기 힘든 아픔을 준 것입니다. 세상 죄를 대신 지시면서 예수님은 처음으로 하나님이 함께 하신다는 의식을 잃어버리셨습니다.

그 방법밖에 없었습니다. 이 중단된 교제를 통해서만 우리에게 구원이 주어질 수 있었습니다. 그리고 예수님이 십자가 위에서 버림받았다는 것을 기꺼이 경험하셨다는 바로 그 이유 때문에 우리 인간들은 하나님과 교제할 수 있게 되었습니다.

예수님, 그 같은 고통을 겪으셔서 우리가 용서 받을 수 있게 해주시니 감사합니다.

Interrupted Fellowship

The loud, sorrowful cry pierced the dark afternoon air. I imagine it drowning out the sound of mourning from friends and loved ones gathered at Jesus’s feet. It must have overwhelmed the moans of the dying criminals who flanked Jesus on both sides. And surely startled all who heard it.

“ Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani! ” Jesus cried out in agony and in utter despondency as He hung on that cross of shame on Golgotha (MATTHEW 27:45–46).

“My God,” He said, “my God, why have you forsaken me?”

I cannot think of more heart-wrenching words. Since eternity, Jesus had been in perfect fellowship with God the Father. Together they had created the universe, had fashioned mankind in their image, and planned salvation. Never in the eons past had they not been in total fellowship with each other.

And now, as the anguish of the cross continued to bring devastating pain on Jesus—He for the first time lost the awareness of God’s presence as He carried the burden of the sins of the world.

It was the only way. Only through this time of interrupted fellowship could our salvation be provided for. And it was only because Jesus was willing to experience this sense of being forsaken on the cross that we humans can gain fellowship with God.

Thank You, Jesus, for experiencing such pain so we could be forgiven. - DAVE BRANON

말이 잘못 전달되었을 때

얼마 전 나는 음성만을 사용하여 아내 캐리에게 문자 메시지를 보냈습니다. 그때 나는 아내를 직장에서 집으로 데려오려고 문 밖으로 나오면서 “늙은 소녀, 어디로 당신을 데리러 갈까?” 라는 말을 보내려고 했었습니다.

캐리는 내가 “늙은 소녀”라고 부르는 것을 싫어하지 않습니다. 그것은 집에서 쓰는 애정 어린 별명 중의 하나이기 때문입니다. 그러나 내 전화기는 그 말을 “이해하지” 못하고 “늙은 암소”라는 말로 대신 보냈습니다.

다행히도 캐리는 무슨 일이 벌어 졌는지를 즉시 알고는 아주 재미있어 했습니다. 그녀는 나중에 소셜 미디어에 내 문자 메시지를 올리며 “내가 기분이 상해야 되나?”라고 질문했습니다. 우리는 둘 다 이
일에 대해 웃을 수 있었습니다.

그날 나의 이상한 말에 대한 아내의 사랑스런 반응을 보면서 하나님도 우리의 기도를 사랑으로 이해해주신다는 생각이 들었습니다. 우리가 기도할 때 무엇을 말해야 할지 모르고, 심지어 무엇을 구해야 할지 몰라도, 우리가 그리스도께 속해 있을 때 우리 안에 계신 성령께서 “말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위하여 간구하시고”(로마서 8:26), 우리에게 가장 필요한 것을 주님께 정확하게 말할 수 있도록 사랑으로 도와주십니다.

우리 하나님 아버지는 멀리 서서 우리가 제대로 말하기를 기다리는 분이 아니십니다. 우리는 하나님이 사랑으로 우리를 이해하고 받아주신다는 확신을 가지고, 주님 앞에 우리의 모든 필요를 들고
나아갈 수 있습니다.

When Words Fail

Not long ago I sent my wife, Cari, a text message using only voice prompts. I was on my way out the door to give her a ride home from work and intended to send the words, “Where would you like me to pick you up, old gal?”

Cari doesn’t mind my calling her “old gal”—it’s one of the affectionate nicknames we use around the house. But my cell phone didn’t “understand” the phrase, and sent the words “old cow” instead.

Fortunately for me, Cari immediately understood what had happened and found it funny. She later posted my text message on social media and asked, “Should I be offended?” We were both able to laugh about it.

My wife’s loving response to my awkward words that day makes me think about God’s loving understanding of our prayers. We may not know what to say when we pray or even what to ask for, but when we belong to Christ, His Spirit within “intercedes for us through wordless groans” (ROMANS 8:26) and lovingly helps us articulate our deepest needs before Him.

Our heavenly Father doesn’t stand at a distance waiting for us to get our words right. We can come to Him with every need, assured that He understands and receives us with love. - JAMES BANKS

수평선을 바라보기

여객선이 움직이기 시작하자마자 내 어린 딸이 속이 좋지 않다고 말했습니다. 뱃멀미가 벌써 시작된 것입니다. 잠시 후 나도 속이 울렁거리기 시작했습니다. “그냥 수평선을 바라보라.” 라고 나는 속으로 되뇌었습니다. 선원들은 이것이 균형감각을 회복하는데 도움을 준다고 말합니다.

수평선을 지으신 분(욥기 26:10)은 우리가 살면서 때때로 두려움과 불안감에 휩싸인다는 것을 아십니다. 그러나 우리가 저 멀리에 있는 흔들리지 않는 우리 목표에 집중할 때, 우리는 균형을 회복할 수
있습니다.

히브리서 저자도 이런 사실을 이해 했습니다. 그는 독자들의 낙담을 느꼈습니다. 그들 중 많은 사람들이 박해를 받아 집을 떠나야만 했습니다. 그래서 그는 그들에게 극심한 시련을 겪고 집을 잃은 다른 믿음의 사람들에 대해 상기시켜 주었습니다. 그 사람들은 더 나은 어떤 것을 바랐기 때문에 모든 것을 견뎌냈습니다.

유랑자들로서 이 독자들은 하나님이 계획하시고 지으신 도성, 곧 천국 본향이요, 하나님이 그들을 위해 예비하신 도성을 기대할 수 있었습니다(히브리서 11:10,14,16). 그래서 히브리서 저자는 그의 마지막 권고에서 독자들에게 하나님의 약속에 집중하라고 당부합니다. “우리가 여기에는 영구한 도성이 없으므로 장차 올 것을 찾나니”(13:14).

우리가 현재 당하는 고난은 일시적입니다. 우리는 “땅에서는 외국인과 나그네”(11:13)이지만, 하나님의 약속의 수평선을 바라보면 우리에게 필요한 기준점을 얻을 수 있습니다.

Gazing at the Horizon

Almost as soon as the ferryboat started to move, my little daughter said she felt ill. Seasickness had already begun to affect her. Soon I was feeling queasy myself. “Just stare at the horizon,” I reminded myself. Sailors say this helps to regain a sense of perspective.

The Maker of the horizon (JOB 26:10) knows that sometimes in life we may become fearful and restless. We can regain perspective by focusing on the distant but steady point of our destiny.

The writer of Hebrews understood this. He sensed discouragement in his readers. Persecution had driven many of them from their homes. So he reminded them that other people of faith had endured extreme trials and had been left homeless. They endured it all because they anticipated something better.

As exiles, these readers could look forward to the city whose architect is God, the heavenly country, the city God prepared for them (HEBREWS 11:10, 14, 16). So in his final exhortations, the writer asked his readers to focus on God’s promises. “For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come” (13:14).

마지막 지시

나라를 위해 20년 동안 헬리콥터 조종사로 복무한 제임스는 고향으로 돌아가 지역사회를 위해 교사로 봉사했습니다. 하지만 헬리콥터가 그리웠던 그는 지역병원의 긴급 의료후송을 하는 직업을 구해서 노년의 나이까지 헬리콥터를 조종했습니다.

이제 그와 작별인사를 할 시간이 왔습니다. 친구와 가족, 그리고 제복을 입은 동료들이 장례를 위해 묘지에 서 있을 때, 한 동료가 무전기로 마지막 임무를 지시 했습니다. 잠시 후, 바람을 가르는 독특한

사울왕과 그의 아들 요나단이 전쟁에서 전사한 후, 다윗은 “활의 노래”(사무엘하 1:17)라는 오랫동안 기억에 남을 만한 애가를 썼습니다. 그는 “네 영광이 산 위에서 죽임을 당하였도다 오호라 두 용사가 엎드러졌도다”(19절)라고 노래했습니다. 요나단은 다윗의 가장 가까운 친구이자 전우였습니다. 다윗과 사울은 원수였지만 다윗은 그 둘 모두를 공경했습니다. 다윗은 이렇게 썼습니다. “사울을 위해 슬피 울어라.” “내 형제 요나단이여, 내가 그대를 위해 슬퍼하노라”(24,26절, 현대인의 성경).

아무리 최고의 이별이라 할지라도 이별은 아주 힘듭니다. 하지만 주님을 믿는 사람들은 이별이 영원하지 않음을 알기에 그 기억은 비통하기보다는 훨씬 감미롭습니다. 다른 사람들을 섬겼던 분들을 기릴
수 있다는 것이 얼마나 기쁜 일인지요!

The Last Call

After serving his country for two decades as a helicopter pilot, James returned home to serve his community as a teacher. But he missed helicopters, so he took a job flying medical evacuations for a local hospital. He flew until late in his life.

Now it was time to say goodbye to him. As friends, family, and uniformed co-workers stood vigil at the cemetery, a colleague called in one last mission over the radio. Soon the distinctive sound of rotors beating the air could be heard. A helicopter circled over the memorial garden, hovered briefly to pay its respects, then headed back to the hospital. Not even the military personnel who were present could hold back the tears.

When King Saul and his son Jonathan were killed in battle, David wrote an elegy for the ages called “the lament of the bow” (2 SAMUEL 1:17). “A gazelle lies slain on your heights,” he sang. “How the mighty have fallen!” (V 19). Jonathan was David’s closest friend and brother-in-arms. And although David and Saul had been enemies, David honored them both. “Weep for Saul,” he wrote. “I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother” (VV 24, 26).

Even the best goodbyes are oh-so-difficult. But for those who trust in the Lord, the memory is much more sweet than bitter, for it is never forever. How good it is when we can honor those who have served others! - TIM GUSTAFSON

만질 수 있는 하나님

남편이 한 달간 출장을 떠남과 거의 동시에 직장과, 집, 아이들에 관한 일들이 한꺼번에 밀어닥쳤습니다. 원고 마감이 눈앞에 다가왔고, 잔디 깎는 기계는 고장 났으며, 방학을 맞은 아이들은 지루해하였습니다. 어떻게 나 혼자 이 모든 것을 감당할 수 있을까요?

그러나 나는 곧 나 혼자가 아니라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 교회 친구들이 와서 도와주었던 것입니다. 조쉬가 와서 잔디 깎는 기계를 고쳐주었고, 존이 점심을 가져다주었으며, 캐시디는 빨래를 도와주었습니다. 애비는 우리 아이들을 데리고 가서 자기 아이들과 같이 놀게 해서 내 일을 끝낼 수 있게 해주었습니다. 하나님은 이 친구들 한 명 한 명을 통해 나의 필요를 공급해주셨습니다. 그들은 바울이 로마서 12장에서 묘사한 일종의 공동체의 생생한 그림이었습니다. 그들은 거짓이 없이 사랑했고(9절), 자신의 필요보다 다른 이들의 필요에 관심을 가졌으며(10절), 내가 필요할 때 도와주었고, 환대를 베풀어주었습니다(13절).

God with Skin On

My husband left for a month-long trip, and almost immediately I was overwhelmed by the needs of my job, our house, and our children. A writing deadline loomed. The lawn mower broke. My children were on school break and bored. How would I take care of all of these things on my own?

I soon realized I wasn’t on my own. Friends from church showed up to help. Josh came over to fix my lawn mower. John brought me lunch. Cassidy helped with the laundry. Abi invited my kids over to play with hers so I could get my work done. God worked through each of these friends to provide for me. They were a living picture of the kind of community Paul describes in Romans 12. They loved sincerely (V 9), considered the needs of others rather than just their own (V 10), shared with me when I was in need, and showed hospitality (V 13).

Because of the love my friends showed to me, I remained “joyful in hope” and “patient in affliction” (V 12), even the mild affliction of solo parenting for a month. My brothers and sisters in Christ became what one friend calls “God with skin on” for me. They showed me the kind of sincere love we ought to show to everyone, especially those in our community of faith (GALATIANS 6:10). I hope to be more like them. - AMY PETERSON

아무도 날 좋아하지 않아

어려서 내가 외롭고 따돌림 받았다고 생각하며 속상해할때, 어머니는 가끔씩 유명한 동요를 불러주어 내 기분을 북돋아주곤 했습니다. “아무도 날 안 좋아해. 모두가 날 싫어해. 나가서 벌레나 잡아먹어야겠다.” 풀이 죽은 내 얼굴에 미소가 번지면, 어머니는 실제로 나에게 있는 특별한 관계들과 감사할 이유들을 많이 볼 수 있도록 도와주셨습니다.

자신을 돌보는 사람이 아무도 없다고 하는 다윗의 고백을 읽을 때, 그 동요가 내 귀에 울립니다. 하지만 다윗의 고통은 절대 과장된 것이 아니었습니다. 나는 내 나이 또래의 전형적인 외로움을 느낀 것이지만, 다윗은 자신이 버림받았다고 느낄만한 충분한 이유가 실제로 있었습니다. 그는 그를 죽이려고 쫓아오는 사울을 피해 숨은 어둡고 깊은 동굴에서 이것을 썼습니다 (사무엘상 22:1; 24:3-10). 다윗은 이스라엘의 미래의 왕으로 기름 부음을 받았고(16:13), 사울왕을 여러 해 섬겼으나 지금은 생명의 위협을 늘 느끼면서 “이리저리 옮겨 다니며” 살고 있었습니다. 다윗은 외로움을 느끼는 가운데 그의 “피난처” 되시고 “살아 있는 사람들의 땅에서 분깃” 이 되시는 하나님께 부르짖었습니다(시편 142:5).

외로움을 느낄 때 우리도 다윗처럼 안전한 하나님의 사랑 안에서 우리의 감정을 토로하며 하나님께 부르짖을 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리의 외로움을 결코 가볍게 여기지 않으십니다. 주님은 우리 인생의
어두운 동굴에서 우리의 동반자가 되기를 원하십니다. 아무도 우리 삶을 돌보지 않는다고 생각하는 그때조차도, 하나님은 돌보고 계십니다!

Nobody Likes Me

As a child, when I felt lonely, rejected, or sorry for myself, my mother would sometimes attempt to cheer me up by singing a popular ditty: “Nobody likes me, everybody hates me. I think I’ll go eat worms.” After a smile came from my downcast face, she’d help me see the many special relationships and reasons for gratitude I truly did have.

When I read that David felt no one cared for him, that ditty rings in my ears. Yet David’s pain wasn’t at all exaggerated. Where I had feelings of loneliness typical for my age, David actually had good reason to feel abandoned. He wrote these words in the dark depths of a cave where he hid from Saul, who pursued him with murderous plans (1 Samuel 22:1; 24:3–10). David had been anointed as Israel’s future king (16:13), had spent years in Saul’s service, but now he lived “on the move,” always fearing for his life. In the midst of the loneliness David felt, he cried out to God as his “refuge” and “portion in the land of the living” (PSALM 142:5).

Like David, we can cry out to God when we feel alone, giving voice to our feelings in the safety of His love. God never minimizes our loneliness. He wants to be our companion in the dark caves of our lives. Even when we think no one cares for our life, God cares! - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
