예수님을 다시 바라보라!

저스티스 형제는 더없이 신실한 사람이었습니다. 헌신적인 남편이자 성실한 우체국 직원이었으며, 그리고 매주 주일엔 우리 교회의 리더로 섬겼습니다. 최근에 어릴 적 다니던 교회를 방문했었는데, 저스티스 형제가 성경공부가 끝날 때가 됐다는 것을 알릴 때 썼던 그 종이 아직도 피아노 위에 놓여있었습니다. 그 종은 오랜 세월을 견뎌내고 있었습니다. 비록
저스티스 형제는 여러 해 전에 주님 곁으로 돌아갔지만, 그의 신실함의 유산은 여전히 남아있습니다.

히브리서 3장을 보면 한 사람의 신실한 종과 신실하신 주님이 우리의 주의를 끕니다. 모세가 하나님의 “종”으로서 신실한 사람이었다는 것은 부인할 수 없지만, 우리 신자들이 바라봐야 할 분은 예수님입니다. “그러므로 거룩한 형제들아......예수를 깊이 생각하라”(1절). 그 말씀은 시험을 겪고 있는 모든 이들에게 격려가 되는 말씀이었습니다 (2:18). 그들의 믿음의 유산은 신실하신 예수님을 따를 때에만 가능한 것이었습니다.

사방에서 유혹이 휘몰아칠 때 당신은 어떻게 합니까? 언제 힘들고 지쳐서 포기하고 싶습니까? 쉽게 풀어 쓴 그 성경구절이 말하고 있듯이 그 구절은 우리에게 “예수님을 자세히 바라보라”(3:1, 메시지 성경)고 권고하고 있습니다. 주님을 다시 바라보십시오. 그리고 다시, 또 다시 보십시오. 예수님을 다시 바라볼 때, 우리는 하나님의 가족으로 살 용기를 주시는 신실하신 하나님의 아들을 발견하게 됩니다.

Take Another Look at Jesus!

If there ever was a faithful person, it was Brother Justice. He was committed to his marriage, dedicated to his job as a postal worker, and each Sunday stood at his post as a leader in our local church. I visited my childhood church recently, and perched on the upright piano was the same bell that Brother Justice rang to notify us that the time for Bible study was about to end. The bell has endured the test of time. And although Brother Justice has been with the Lord for years, his legacy of faithfulness also endures.

Hebrews 3 brings a faithful servant and a faithful Son to the readers’ attention. Though the faithfulness of Moses as God’s “servant” is undeniable, Jesus is the one believers are taught to focus on. “Therefore, holy brothers and sisters . . . fix your thoughts on Jesus” (V 1). Such was the encouragement to all who face temptation (2:18). Their legacy could come only from following Jesus, the faithful One.

What do you do when the winds of temptation are swirling all around you? When you are weary and worn and want to quit? The text invites us to, as one paraphrase renders it, “Take a good hard look at Jesus” (3:1 THE MESSAGE). Look at Him again—and again and again. As we reexamine Jesus, we find the trustworthy Son of God who gives us courage to live in His family. ARTHUR JACKSON

현장실습

우리 아들의 선생님이 과학 캠프의 보호자로 봉사해주기를 요청했을 때 나는 주저하였습니다. 나의 과거는 실수로 뒤범벅되어 있고, 나는 여전히 예전의 나쁜 습관들로 몸부림치고, 넘어지고, 미끄러지고 있는데 어떻게 내가 모범이 될 수 있겠습니까? 하나님께서 나를 도와주셔서 내 아들을 사랑하고 키우게는 하셨지만, 다른 사람들을 섬기는데 나를 사용하실 수 있을지 종종 의심이 되었습니다.

마음과 삶을 바꾸실 수 있는 완전하신 유일한 하나님께서 시간이 지나면서 우리를 변화시키신다는 것을 나는 아직도 때때로 깨닫지 못할 때가 있습니다. 그러면 성령님께서 나에게 바울 사도가 어떻게 디모데에게 그의 현장에서 배운 것들을 받아들이고, 믿음으로 인내하며, 하나님이 주신 은사를 사용하라고 격려했는지 상기시켜 주십니다(디모데후서 1:6). 디모데가 담대할 수 있었던 것은 디모데가 자신의 영향력 아래 있는 사람들을 자라가게 하고 섬기기를 계속할 때 그의 능력의 근원 되시는 하나님께서 사랑하고 절제하도록 도우실 것이기 때문이었습니다(7절).

그리스도께서 우리를 구원하시고 우리의 삶으로 그분께 영광 돌리도록 힘을 주시는데, 그것은 우리가 특별한 자격이 있어서가 아니라 우리가 그분의 소중한 가족의 구성원이기 때문입니다(9절).

단순히 하나님과 다른 이들을 사랑하는 것이 우리의 역할임을 알고 있을 때 우리는 확신을 가지고 인내할 수 있습니다. 그리스도의 역할은 우리를 구원하시고 세상에 대한 우리의 좁은 시야를 넘어서는 목적을 주시는 것입니다. 우리가 매일 예수님을 따를 때, 주님은 우리를 어디로 보내시든지 우리를 사용하셔서 그분의 사랑과 진리를 나누며 다른 이들을 격려하도록 변화시키십니다.

On-the-Job Training

When my son’s teacher asked me to serve as a chaperone for their science camp, I hesitated. How could I be a role model when mistakes littered my past, when I still struggled, stumbled, and slipped into old bad habits? God helped me love and raise my son, but I often doubted He could use me to serve others.

Sometimes I still fail to recognize that God—the only perfect One, the only One who can change hearts and lives—transforms us over time. Then the Holy Spirit reminds me how Paul encouraged Timothy to embrace his on-the-job training, persevere in faith, and use the gifts God had given him (2 TIMOTHY 1:6). Timothy could be courageous because God, his power source, would help him love and be disciplined as he continued to grow and serve those within his sphere of influence (V 7).

Christ saves and empowers us to honor Him with our lives, not because we have special qualifications but because we’re each valuable members of His family (V 9).

We can persevere with confidence when we know our role is to simply love God and others. Christ’s role is to save us and give us a purpose that extends beyond our small vision of the world. As we follow Jesus daily, He transforms us while using us to encourage others as we share His love and truth wherever He sends us. XOCHITL DIXON

지혜가 부르는 소리

60세의 나이에 예수님을 믿게 된 저명한 영국의 기자이자 사회 비평가인 말콤 무제리지는 그의 75번째 생일에 인생에 관한 통찰력 있는 25가지 관찰을 선보였습니다. 그중 하나는 다음과 같습니다. “나는 행복한 부자를 만나본 일이 없다. 하지만 아주 드물게 부자가 되기를 원치 않았던 한 가난한 사람을 만난 적은 있다.”

우리들 중 대다수의 사람들은 돈으로 행복을 살 수 없다는 것에 동의하면서도, 안정을 위해서 조금 더 소유하기를 원합니다.

솔로몬 왕의 순 자산은 미화로 계산해서 2조 달러보다 더 많았던 것으로 추정됩니다. 비록 그는 아주 부유했지만, 재물이 가지고 있는 큰 한계를 알고 있었습니다. 잠언 8장은 그의 체험을 기반으로 하여 모든 사람들에게 “지혜가 부르는 소리” 를 제공해줍니다. “사람들아 내가 너희를 부르며......내 입은 진리를 말하며”(4-7절). “너희가 은을 받지 말고 나의 훈계를 받으며 정금보다 지식을 얻으라 대저 지혜는 진주보다 나으므로 원하는 모든 것을 이에 비교할 수 없음이니라”(10-11절).

지혜가 말합니다. “내 열매는 금이나 정금보다 나으며 내 소득은 순은보다 나으니라 나는 정의로운 길로 행하며 공의로운 길 가운데로 다니나니 이는 나를 사랑하는 자가 재물을 얻어서 그 곳간에 채우게 하려 함이니라”(19-20절).

이것들이 참으로 진정한 부유함입니다!

Wisdom’s Call

Malcolm Muggeridge, the noted British journalist and social critic, came to faith in Christ at the age of sixty. On his seventy-fifth birthday he offered twenty-five insightful observations about life. One said, “I never met a rich man who was happy, but I have only very occasionally met a poor man who did not want to become a rich man.”

Most of us would agree that money can’t make us happy, but we might like to have more so we can be sure.

King Solomon’s net worth has been estimated at more than two trillion US dollars. Although he was very wealthy, he knew that money had great limitations. Proverbs 8 is based on his experience and offers “Wisdom’s Call” to all people. “I raise my voice to all mankind. . . . My mouth speaks what is true” (VV 4–7). “Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (VV 10–11).

Wisdom says, “My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver. I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice, bestowing a rich inheritance on those who love me and making their treasuries full” (VV 19–20).

과부의 믿음

아피는 아직 칠흑같이 어두울 때 그녀의 하루를 시작합니다. 조금 후에는 마을에 사는 다른 사람들이 일어나 그들이 일하는 고무나무 농장으로 향할 것입니다. 중국의 홍주앙 마을에 사는 사람들의 주 소득원 중의 하나는 고무 유액을 채취하는 것입니다. 고무 유액을 가능한 많이 채취하기 위해서는 해 뜨기 전 아침 일찍 나무에 구멍을 내야 합니다. 아피도 유액 채취자들의 한 사람으로 일하지만, 그녀는 먼저 하나님과 대화하며 시간을 보냅니다.

아피의 아버지, 남편, 그리고 하나 뿐인 아들마저 다 죽었습니다. 그녀와 그녀의 며느리가 나이 많은 어머니와 두 어린 손자를 돌보고 있습니다. 그녀의 이야기는 하나님을 신뢰했던 성경에 나오는 한 과부를 연상시켜 줍니다.

과부의 남편은 죽고 많은 빚을 남겼 습니다(열왕기하 4:1). 그녀는 고통 중에 하나님의 종 엘리사를 찾아가 하나님께 도움을 구했습니다. 그녀는 하나님이 그녀를 돌아보셔서 그 상황을 해결해주시리라고 믿었습니다. 하나님은 실제로 그렇게 하셨습니다. 주님은 그 과부의 절실한 필요를 기적적으로 공급해주셨습니다(5-6절). 동일하신 하나님께서 비록 작은
기적이긴 하지만 아피의 손을 통한 수고로, 땅이 제공하는 산물로, 그리고 하나님의 백성들로부터의 선물로 그녀에게도 공급해주셨습니다.

비록 삶이 여러 방면에서 우리를 힘들게 하여도, 우리는 항상 하나님으로부터 힘을 얻을 수 있습니다. 우리의 걱정거리를 주님께 맡기고 우리가 할 수 있는 일을 다 하면, 하나님은 우리의 상황 속에서 놀라운 일을 행하실 것입니다.

The Widow’s Faith

It is pitch dark when Ah-pi starts her day. Others in the village will wake up soon to make their way to the rubber plantation. Harvesting latex is one of the main sources of income for people living in Hongzhuang Village, China. To collect as much latex as possible, the trees must be tapped very early in the morning, before daybreak. Ah-pi will be among the rubber tappers, but first she will spend time communing with God.

Ah-pi’s father, husband, and only son have passed away, and she—with her daughter-in-law—is providing for an elderly mother and two young grandsons. Her story reminds me of another widow in the Bible who trusted God.

The widow’s husband had died and left her in debt (2 KINGS 4:1). In her distress, she looked to God for help by turning to His servant Elisha. She believed that God cared and that He could do something about her situation. And God did. He provided miraculously for the dire needs of this widow (VV 5–6). This same God also provided for Ah-pi—though less miraculously—through the toil of her hands, the produce from the ground, and gifts from His people.

Though life can make various demands on us, we can always draw strength from God. We can entrust our cares to Him, do all we can, and let Him amaze us with what He can do

기억 상실

캘리포니아의 칼스바드에서 긴급구조대가 자신이 누군지도 잘 모르는 오스트레일리아 억양으로 말하는 한 여인을 구조하였습니다. 그녀는 기억 상실증을 앓고 있었고 신분증도
없었기 때문에 그녀의 이름도, 어디에서 왔는지도 알 수 없었습니다. 의사들과 국제 언론의 도움으로 그녀는 건강을 회복하고 그녀의 이야기가 알려져 가족들과 다시 만날 수 있었습니다.

바벨론 왕 느부갓네살도 그가 누구이며 어디로부터 왔는지를 잊어버렸습니다. 그러나 그의 “기억 상실”은 영적인 것이었습니다. 그는 자신이 물려받은 왕국에 대하여 자랑할때, 하나님이 왕 중의 왕이시라는 것과 그가 가진 모든 것이 하나님으로부터 왔다는 사실을 잊었습니다(다니엘 4:17,28-30).

하나님은 드라마처럼 왕의 마음을 움직여서 들짐승과 함께 거하며 소처럼 풀을 뜯게 하셨습니다(32-33절). 마침내 느부갓네살은 7년 후에 하늘을 바라보고 그가 누구이며 누가 그에게 왕국을 주었는지를 기억하였습니다. 기억이 돌아오고 난 뒤 그는 “이제 나 느부갓네살은 하늘의 왕을 찬양하고 높이며, 그분에게 영광을 돌리는 바이다”(37절, 새번역)라고 선언하였습니다.

우리는 어떻습니까? 우리는 우리가 누구라고 생각합니까? 우리는 어디에서 왔습니까? 우리는 잊기를 잘 하기 때문에, 왕 중의 왕이신 주님외에 어느 누가 우리가 기억할 수 있도록 도와줄 수 있을까요?

우리가 누구인지를 잊었을 때에도 하나님 아버지는 우리를 돌보아주신다.

Amnesia

Emergency Services in Carlsbad, California, came to the rescue of a woman with an Australian accent who couldn’t recall who she was. Because she was suffering from amnesia and had no ID with her, she was unable to provide her name or where she had come from. It took the help of doctors and international media to restore her health, tell her story, and reunite her with her family.

Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, also lost sight of who he was and where he had come from. His “amnesia,” though, was spiritual. In taking credit for the kingdom he’d been given, he forgot that God is the King of Kings, and everything he had was from Him (DANIEL 4:17, 28–30).

God dramatized the king’s state of mind by driving him into the fields to live with wild animals and graze like a cow (VV 32–33). Finally, after seven years Nebuchadnezzar looked up to the skies, and his memory of who he was and who had given him his kingdom returned. With his senses restored, he declared, “I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt and glorify the King of heaven” (V 37).

What about us? Who do we think we are? Where did we come from? Since we are inclined to forget, who can we count on to help us remember but the King of Kings? MART DEHAAN

대기 장소

“물고기가 미끼를 물기를 기다리거나, 연을 날리려고 바람이 불기를 기다리거나, 혹은 금요일 저녁을 기다리거나...... 모든 사람들은 그저 그렇게 기다리고 있다.”라고 어린이
책을 많이 쓴 작가 닥터 수스는 말합니다.

인생의 아주 많은 부분이 기다리는 것에 관한 것이지만, 하나님은 절대로 서두르지 않으십니다. 아니, 어쩌면 그러신 것처럼 보입니다. “하나님께는 그분의 때가 있으며 시간을
늦추기도 하신다.”라는 믿을 만한 오래된 격언이 있습니다. 그래서 우리는 기다립니다.

기다림은 어려운 일입니다. 우리는 손을 깍지 낀 채 두 엄지손가락을 빙빙 돌리기도 하고, 발을 이리저리 움직이거나, 하품을 꾹 참거나, 긴 한숨을 쉬고, 좌절감으로 남몰래 초조해하기도 합니다. 왜 나는 이런 이상한 사람과 살아야만 하며, 이런 지루한 직업이나 이런 당황스런 행동, 사라지지 않는 이 같은 건강문제를 갖고 살아가야만 합니까? 왜 하나님은 해결해주지 않으실까요?

하나님의 대답은 이것입니다. “잠시 동안 기다리면서 내가 하는 일을 보아라.”

기다림은 인생의 가장 좋은 선생님 중의 하나입니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 기다림을 통해서, 즉 하나님께서 우리를 위해 우리 안에서 일하시는 동안에 기다리면서......바로 그 기다림의 미덕을 배우게 되기 때문입니다. 비록 모든 일이 우리 뜻대로 되지 않을 때에도 우리는 기다림으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑과 선하심을 믿는 능력인 인내를 키우게 됩니다(시편 70:5).

그러나 기다림이란 지루하거나 이를 악무는 체념이 아닙니다. 기다리는 동안 우리는 하나님 안에서 “기뻐하고 즐거워할 수 있습니다” (4절). 우리는 하나님께서 지금이든지 혹은 다음이든지 정하신 때에 우리를 구원하실 것을 아는 소망 가운데 기다립니다. 하나님은 결코 서두르시지 않으며 언제나 제 시간에 역사하십니다.

The Waiting Place

“Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite. Or waiting around for Friday night . . . . Everyone is just waiting”—or so Dr. Seuss, author of many children’s books, says.

So much of life is about waiting, but God is never in a hurry—or so it seems. “God has His hour and delay,” suggests an old, reliable saying. Thus we wait.

Waiting is hard. We twiddle our thumbs, shuffle our feet, stifle our yawns, heave long sighs, and fret inwardly in frustration. Why must I live with this awkward person, this tedious job, this embarrassing behavior, this health issue that will not go away? Why doesn’t God come through?

God’s answer: “Wait awhile and see what I will do.”

Waiting is one of life’s best teachers for in it we learn the virtue of . . . well, waiting—waiting while God works in us and for us. It’s in waiting that we develop endurance, the ability to trust God’s love and goodness, even when things aren’t going our way (PSALM 70:5).

But waiting is not dreary, teeth-clenched resignation. We can “rejoice and be glad in [Him]” while we wait (V 4). We wait in hope, knowing that God will deliver us in due time—in this world or in the next. God is never in a hurry, but He’s always on time. DAVID H. ROPER

평강의 비결

그레이스는 아주 특별한 여성입니다. 그녀를 생각할 때 내 마음에 떠오르는 단어는 ‘평강’입니다. 나는 그녀를 알게 된지 6개월이 되었는데, 그녀의 조용하면서도 평온한 얼굴표정은
그녀의 남편이 희귀병으로 진단을 받아 입원하는 동안에도 거의 변함이 없었습니다.

내가 그레이스에게 그녀의 평강에 관한 비결이 무엇인지 물어보자 그녀는 이렇게 대답했습니다. “그건 비결이 아니고요, 어느 분 때문입니다. 제 안에 계시는 예수님 때문이지요. 이런 역경 속에서 제가 느끼는 고요함을 어떻게 달리 설명할 수가 없습니다.”

평강의 비결은 우리의 평강이 되시는 예수 그리스도와 우리의 관계에 있습니다. 예수님이 우리의 구주와 주님이 되시고 우리가 그분을 점점 닮아갈수록 평강은 현실이 됩니다.
질병이나 금전적 어려움, 위험한 일 등이 있다고 해도, 평강이 있음으로 하나님께서 그분의 손으로 우리의 삶을 붙들고 계시다는 것을 확신하게 되고(다니엘 5:23), 모든 일이 합력하여 선을 이루게 된다는 것을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

우리의 논리와 이해력을 뛰어넘는 이런 평강을 경험해 보셨습니까? 하나님께서 주관하신다는 내적 확신이 우리에게 있습니까? “평강의 주께서 너희에게 평강을 주시기를 원하노라”라는 바울 사도의 말이 오늘 우리 모두를 향한 나의 간절한 바람입니다. 우리가 이 평강을 “친히 때마다 일마다”(데살로니가후서 3:16) 느낄 수 있기를 소원합니다.

The Secret of Peace

Grace is a very special lady. One word comes to mind when I think of her: peace . The quiet and restful expression on her face has seldom changed in the six months I have known her, even though her husband was diagnosed with a rare disease and then hospitalized.

When I asked Grace the secret of her peace, she said, “It’s not a secret, it’s a person. It’s Jesus in me. There is no other way I can explain the quietness I feel in the midst of this storm.”

The secret of peace is our relationship to Jesus Christ. He is our peace. When Jesus is our Savior and Lord, and as we become more like Him, peace becomes real. Things like sickness, financial difficulties, or danger may be present, but peace reassures us that God holds our lives in His hands (DANIEL 5:23), and we can trust that things will work together for good.

Have we experienced this peace that goes beyond logic and understanding? Do we have the inner confidence that God is in control? My wish for all of us today echoes the words of
the apostle Paul: “May the Lord of peace himself give you peace.” And may we feel this peace “at all times and in every way” (2 THESSALONIANS 3:16). KEILA OCHOA

세밀하신 하나님

우리 래브라도 리트리버 강아지 “초콜릿”이 3개월 되었을 때, 예방접종과 정기검진을 위해 동물병원에 데리고 갔습니다. 수의사는 강아지를 자세히 진찰하다가 왼쪽 뒷발의 털에 하얀 작은 반점이 있는 것을 알아차렸습니다. 수의사는 “여기가 하나님이 너를 초콜릿에 담글 때 잡았던 자리구나.”라고 말했습니다.

나는 웃음이 터지고 말았습니다. 그러나 그녀는 의도하지는 않았지만 하나님께서 피조물을 향해 품으시는 깊고 친밀한 관심에 대한 의미심장한 점을 짚어냈습니다.

예수님은 마태복음 10장 30절에서 “너희에게는 머리털까지 다 세신 바 되었다” 라고 말씀하십니다. 하나님은 너무 위대 하셔서 우리 삶의 가장 세밀한 부분에 이르기 까지 무한한 관심을 쏟으실 수 있습니다. 주님의 눈길을 피할 만큼 작은 것은 아무것도 없으며, 주님 앞에 내어놓지 못할 만큼 사소한 문제도 없습니다. 주님은 그 정도로 우리를 돌보십니다.

하나님은 우리를 창조하셨을 뿐만 아니라, 매 순간 우리를 지탱하시고 지켜주십니다. “대부분의 문제는 사소한 곳에 있다”라는 말이 있습니다. 그러나 훨씬 더 좋은 생각은 그 사소한 것 속에 하나님이 계셔서 우리가 미처 눈치 채지 못하는 부분까지 주목하고 계시다는 것을 아는 것입니다. 완벽한 지혜로 우리를 돌보시는 하나님 아버지께서 그분의 사랑의 능한 손길로 모든 피조물과 함께 우리를 붙들고 계시다는 사실을 깨달으니 얼마나 위로가 되는지 모릅니다!

God in the Details

When my “chocolate” Labrador retriever puppy was three months old, I took him to the veterinarian’s office for his shots and checkup. As our vet carefully looked him over, she noticed a small white marking in his fur on his left hind paw. She smiled and said to him, “That’s where God held you when He dipped you in chocolate.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. But she had unintentionally made a meaningful point about the deep and personal interest God takes in His creation.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 10:30 that “even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” God is so great that He is able to take infinite interest in the most intimate details of our
lives. There is nothing so small that it escapes His notice, and there is no concern too trivial to bring before Him. He simply cares that much.

God not only created us; He sustains and keeps us through every moment. It’s sometimes said that “the devil is in the details.” But it’s better by far to understand that God is in them, watching over even the things that escape our notice. How comforting it is to know that our perfectly wise and caring heavenly Father holds us—along with all of creation—in His strong and loving hands. JAMES BANKS

어디든지

상자에 든 오래된 결혼사진들을 넘겨보다가 남편과 내가 새롭게 “부부”라고 명명된 함께 찍은 사진에 손가락이 멈췄습니다. 그를 향한 마음이 내 표정 속에 분명히 드러나 있었습니다. 나는 남편과 함께라면 ‘어디든지’ 갈 것입니다.

거의 사십 년이 지난 지금도 우리의 결혼은 좋은 때나 힘든 때나 우리를 지켜준 사랑과 헌신으로 단단히 결속되어 있습니다. 한 해 한 해를 보내며 나는 그와 함께라면 ‘어디든지’ 가겠다는 헌신의 마음을 매번 다시 다짐하였습니다.

예레미야 2장 2절에서 하나님은 그가 사랑하는, 하지만 방황하고 있는 이스라엘 백성들을 그리워하면서 “내가 너를 위하여 네 청년 때의 인애와 네 신혼 때의 사랑을 기억하노니......나를 따랐음이니라”라고 말씀하십니다. 히브리어로 ‘인애’는 할 수 있는 한 가장 고귀한 충성과 헌신을 의미합니다. 처음에 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님을 향한 확고한 헌신을
다짐했지만, 점차 등을 돌렸습니다.

처음 헌신할 때는 부인할 수 없을 만큼 강한 느낌을 갖게 되더라도 삶에 안주하게 되면서 사랑의 날카로운 날은 무디어지고 열정은 식어버려 서로에게 신실하지 못하게 되기도 합니다. 우리는 우리 결혼 생활의 그런 나태함과 싸우는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 잘 알고 있습니다. 하나님과의 사랑의 관계 속에서 갖게 된 열정은 어떻습니까? 우리는 처음 믿었을 때만큼 지금 주님께 헌신하고 있습니까?

신실하신 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 다시 돌아오라고 하십니다 (3:14-15). 오늘 우리는 어느 곳이든 주님을 따라가겠다고 다시 서약할 수 있습니다.

Anywhere

As I flipped through a box of my old wedding photographs, my fingers stopped at a picture of my husband and me, newly christened “Mr. and Mrs.” My dedication to him was obvious in my expression. I would go anywhere with him.

Nearly four decades later, our marriage is tightly threaded with love and a commitment that has carried us through both hard and good times. Year after year, I’ve recommitted my dedication to go anywhere with him.

In Jeremiah 2:2, God yearns for His beloved but wayward Israel, “I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me.” The Hebrew word for devotion conveys the highest loyalty and commitment possible. At first, Israel expressed this unwavering devotion to God, but gradually she turned away.

Despite the undeniably powerful feelings in the early stages of commitment, complacency can dull the sharp edge of love and a lack of zeal can lead to unfaithfulness. We know the importance of fighting against such a lag in our marriages. What about the fervor of our love relationship with God? Are we as devoted to Him now as we were when we first came to faith?

God faithfully allows His people to return (3:14–15). Today we can renew our vows to follow Him—anywhere. ELISA MORGAN

용서의 미학

어느 날 오후 나는 ‘아버지와 두 아들: 용서의 미학’이라는 제목의 미술 전시회에서 두 시간을 보냈습니다. 모든 작품은 예수님의 탕자 비유에 관한 것이었습니다(누가복음 15:11-31 참조). 나에게는 에드워드 로자스의 작품 ‘탕자’가 특히 강한 인상을 주었습니다. 그 그림은 한때 방탕했던 아들이 누더기를 입고 고개를 떨어뜨린 채 집으로 돌아오는 것을 그리고
있습니다. 죽음의 땅을 뒤로 하고, 그는 이미 그를 향해 달려오고 있는 아버지가 있는 길로 발걸음을 내딛고 있습니다. 그 그림의 아래쪽에는 “아직도 거리가 먼데 아버지가 그를 보고 측은히 여겨”(20절)라는 예수님의 말씀이 적혀 있습니다.

나는 하나님의 변함없는 사랑이 나의 삶을 어떻게 바꾸었는지 다시 한 번 깨닫고 깊은 감동을 받았습니다. 내가 하나님으로부터 멀어졌을 때, 하나님은 등을 돌리지 않고 계속 바라보고 지켜보며 기다려주셨습니다. 하나님은 그의 사랑을 받을 자격이 없는 우리에게 변함없이 주시고, 혹시 우리가 묵살한다고 해도 결코 그 사랑을 거두어들이지 않으십니다.

우리는 모두 죄를 지었지만, 우리 하나님 아버지는 마치 이 예화의 아버지가 그의 비뚤어진 아들을 감싸 안듯이 팔을 벌려 우리를 환영하십니다. 아버지가 하인들에게 말했습니다. “우리가 먹고 즐기자 이 내 아들은 죽었다가 다시 살아났으며 내가 잃었다가 다시 얻었노라”(23-24절).

주님은 오늘 그분께로 돌아오는 자들을 여전히 기뻐하십니다. 그리고 그것은 축하할 가치가 있습니다!

The Art of Forgiveness

One afternoon I spent two hours at an art exhibit— The Father & His Two Sons: The Art of Forgiveness —in which all of the pieces were focused on Jesus’s parable of the prodigal son (SEE LUKE 15:11–31). I found Edward Riojas’s painting The Prodigal Son especially powerful. The painting portrays the once wayward son returning home, wearing rags and walking with his head down. With a land of death behind him, he steps onto a pathway where his father is already running toward him. At the bottom of the painting are Jesus’s words, “But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion” (V 20 KJV).

I was deeply moved by realizing once more how God’s unchanging love has altered my life. When I walked away from Him, He didn’t turn His back, but kept looking, watching, and waiting. His love is undeserved yet unchanging; often ignored yet never withdrawn.

We all are guilty, yet our heavenly Father reaches out to welcome us, just as the father in this story embraced his wayward son. “Let’s have a feast and celebrate,” the father told the servants. “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found” (VV 23–24).

The Lord still rejoices over those who return to Him today—and that is worth celebrating! DAVID C. MCCASLAND
