완벽한 세상
케이티는 학교에서 “나의 완벽한 세상”이라는 글짓기 숙제를 받고는 이렇게 썼습니다. “나의 완벽한 세상에서는...… 아이스크림이 공짜이고, 막대사탕이 어디에나 있고, 하늘은 언제나 파랗고 재미있는 모양의 구름이 조금 떠 있습니다.” 그 다음 이어지는 아이의 글은 약간 심각한 내용으로 바뀌었습니다. 그 세상에서는 “집에 와도 나쁜 소식이 기다리질 않습니다. 그리고 나쁜 소식을 갖고 집에 오는 사람도 없습니다.”
집에 오면 나쁜 소식이 없다니 아주 멋지지 않습니까? 이 말은 곧 우리가 예수님 안에 가지고 있는 확실한 소망을 잘 말해주고 있습니다. 예수님은 이 세상을 치유하고 변화시켜 “만물을 새롭게”(요한계시록 21:5) 하십니다.
천국은 “더 이상 없는” 곳입니다. 더 이상 악이 없고, 더 이상 죽음이 없고, 더 이상 애통하는 것이 없고, 더 이상 아픈 곳이 없고, 더 이상 눈물이 없는 곳입니다(4절)! 그곳은 믿는 자들을 그분의 사랑으로 구원하시고 그의 소유로 주장하시는 하나님과 완전한 교제를 나누는 곳입니다(3절). 이처럼 놀라운 기쁨이 우리를 기다립니다!
우리는 지금 이곳에서 이 완전한 모습을 미리 맛볼 수 있습니다. 매일 하나님과 교제하기를 힘쓰면 하나님 임재의 기쁨을 경험하게 됩니다(골로새서 1:12-13). 그리고 죄와 싸울 때에도 죄와 사망을 완전히 이기신 그리스도 안에서 불완전하나마 승리를 경험할 수 있습니다 (2:13-15).

집에 오면 나쁜 소식이 없다니 아주 멋지지 않습니까? 이 말은 곧 우리가 예수님 안에 가지고 있는 확실한 소망을 잘 말해주고 있습니다. 예수님은 이 세상을 치유하고 변화시켜 “만물을 새롭게”(요한계시록 21:5) 하십니다.

A Perfect World
Katie was given a school assignment to write an essay entitled “My Perfect World.” She wrote: “In my perfect world . . . ice cream is free, lollipops are everywhere, and the sky is blue all the time, with only a few clouds that have interesting shapes.” Then her essay took a more serious turn. In that world, she continued, “No one will come home to bad news. And no one will have to be the one to deliver it.”
No one will come home to bad news. Isn’t that wonderful? Those words point powerfully to the confident hope we have in Jesus. He is “making everything new”—healing and transforming our world (Revelation 21:5).
Paradise is the place of “no more”—no more evil, no more death, no more mourning, no more pain, no more tears (v. 4)! It is a place of perfect communion with God, who by His love has redeemed and claimed believers as His own (v. 3). What marvelous joy awaits us!
We can enjoy a foretaste of this perfect reality here and now. As we seek to fellowship with God daily, we experience the joy of His presence (Colossians 1:12–13). And even as we struggle against sin, we experience, in part, the victory that is ours in Christ (2:13–15), the One who fully conquered sin and death. - POH FANG CHIA

자비어가 두 살 때 한 작은 신발가게의 통로를 마구 누비며 달아난 적이 있습니다. 아이는 신발 상자를 쌓아놓은 곳 뒤에 숨어 있다가 남편 알렌이 “보인다.”고 하자 깔깔대고 웃었습니다.
그러다 잠시 후 알렌이 자비어를 부르며 황급히 통로를 뛰어다니는 것이 보였습니다. 우리는 가게의 입구 쪽으로 뛰어갔습니다. 아이는 여전히 웃어대며 복잡한 길로 통하는, 열려있는 문 쪽으로 달려가고 있었습니다.
알 렌 이 순 식 간 에 아 이 를 잡아 올렸습니다. 우리는 서로 끌어안고 하나님께 감사하며, 울먹이면서 아이의 통통한 볼에
입을 맞추었습니다.
자비어를 임신하기 일 년 전, 나는 첫 아이를 유산했습니다. 하나님이 우리를 축복하여 아들을 주셨을 때 나에게는 부모로서의 두려움이 가득했습니다. 신발가게의 경험은 내가 언제나 우리 아이를 지켜보거나 보호할 수 없다는 것을 말해주었습니다. 그러나 걱정과 두려움으로 힘들 때에도 나에게 단 하나뿐인 확실한 도움의 근원이신 하나님을 바라보는 것을 배우면서 평안을 찾게 되었습니다.
우리의 하나님 아버지는 결코 그의 자녀들에게서 눈을 떼지 않으십니다(시편 121:1-4). 우리는 시련과 상심과 상실을 막을 수는 없지만, 언제나 함께 계셔서 우리 삶을 지켜보시는 조력자이시며 보호자이신 그분께 의지하여 확고한 믿음으로 살 수 있습니다(5-8절).
우리에게는 갈 바를 모르겠고 속수무책일 때가 있습니다. 또 사랑하는 사람들을 지켜주지 못할 때 무력감을 느끼기도 합니다. 그러나 우리는 모든 것을 아시는 하나님께서 그의 소중하고 사랑하는 자녀들인 우리에게서 결코 눈을 떼지 않으신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다.

I See You
When Xavier was two, he darted into one aisle after another in a small shoe store. Hiding behind stacks of shoeboxes, he giggled when my husband, Alan, said, “I see you.”
Moments later, I saw Alan dash frantically from aisle to aisle, calling Xavier’s name. We raced to the front of the store. Our child, still laughing, ran toward the open door leading to the busy street outside.
Within seconds, Alan scooped him up. We embraced as I thanked God, sobbed, and kissed our toddler’s chubby cheeks.
A year before I became pregnant with Xavier, I’d lost our first child during the pregnancy. When God blessed us with our son, I became a fearful parent. Our shoe store experience proved I wouldn’t always be able to see or protect our child. But I discovered peace as I learned to turn to my only sure source of help—God—when I struggled with worry and fear.
Our heavenly Father never takes His eyes off His children (Psalm 121:1–4). While we can’t prevent trials, heartache, or loss, we can live with confident faith, relying on an ever-present Helper and Protector who watches over our lives (vv. 5–8). - XOCHITL DIXON
We may encounter days when we feel lost and helpless. We may also feel powerless when we can’t shield loved ones. But we can trust that our all-knowing God never loses sight of us—His precious and beloved children.

텍사스 주 오스틴의 한 호텔에 머물 때 내 방의 책상 위에 놓인 카드가 눈에 띄었습니다. 거기엔 이렇게 쓰여 있었습니다.
‘환영합니다! 여기에 편안히 머무르시고 또 유익한 여행이 되시기를 기도드립니다. 주님께서 당신을 축복하고 보호하시며 , 그분의 얼굴을 당신에게 비춰주시기를 기도합니다.’
나는 카드를 읽고 이 호텔을 운영하는 회사에 대해 더 알고 싶어져서 회사의 웹사이트를 찾아 그들의 문화와 장점과 가치관에 대해 읽어보았습니다. 탁월함을 추구하면서 자신의 믿음을 일터에서 실천하는 그들의 모습은 나에게 감동을 주었습니다.
이 회사의 경영철학은 베드로가 소아시아 전역에 흩어져 있는 예수님을 따르는 이들에게 한 말을 떠올려주었습니다. 베드로는 그들에게 살고 있는 사회 안에서 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 보이라고 격려했습니다. 베드로는 그들에게 위협과 박해 앞에서도 두려워하지 말고, “너희 마음에 그리스도를 주로 삼아 거룩하게 하고 너희 속에 있는 소망에 관한 이유를 묻는 자에게는 대답할 것을 항상 준비하되 온유와 두려움으로 하라”(베드로전서 3:15)고 말했습니다.
내 친구는 이것을 “설명을 필요로 하는 생활방식”이라고 합니다. 우리가 어디서 살거나 일하든지 오늘 하나님의 능력으로 믿음대로 살면서 우리의 소망에 대한 이유를 묻는 모든 이들에게 언제나 부드럽고 정중하게 대답할 준비가 되어 있기를 바랍니다.

Living Out Loud
While staying at a hotel in Austin, Texas, I noticed a card lying on the desk in my room. It said:
Welcome
Our prayer is that your stay here will be restful
and that your travels will be fruitful.
May the Lord bless you and keep you, and make
His face shine upon you.
This card from the company that manages the hotel made me want to know more, so I accessed their website and read about their culture, strength, and values. In a winsome way, they seek to pursue excellence and live out their faith in the workplace.
Their philosophy reminded me of Peter’s words to the followers of Jesus scattered throughout Asia Minor. He encouraged them to demonstrate their faith in Christ in the society where they lived. Even as they faced threats and persecution, Peter told them not to be afraid, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15).
A friend of mine calls this “living a lifestyle that demands an explanation.” No matter where we live or work, may we in God’s strength live out our faith today—always ready to reply gently and respectfully to everyone who asks the reason for our hope. - DAVID C. MCCASLAND

하나님은 어떤 분이신가?
특별한 날을 맞아 남편이 나를 데리고 동네 화랑에 가서 나에게 선물로 그림 하나를 골라보라고 했습니다. 나는 숲 사이로
시냇물이 흐르는 작은 그림 하나를 골랐습니다. 화면 가득히 시냇물을 그린 그림에는 하늘이 거의 보이지 않았습니다. 그래도 물줄기에 반사되어 해와 나무와 안개 낀 모습이 보였습니다. 하늘을 “볼” 수 있는 유일한 방법은 시냇물의 수면을 바라보는 것이었습니다.
영적으로는 예수님이 바로 그 시냇물과 같습니다. 하나님이 어떤 분이신지 보고 싶을 때 우리는 예수님을 바라봅니다. 히브리서 기자는 그 분이 바로 “[하나님] 본체의 형상”(1:3)이라고 했습니다. 우리는 “하나님은 사랑이시다”와 같이 성경의 직접적인 설명을 통해 하나님에 대해 배울 수도 있지만, 세상에서 우리가 마주치는 문제들을 하나님이 똑같이 마주치실 때 과연 어떻게 하실지 우리가 알 수 있다면 하나님을 더 깊이 이해할 수 있을 것입니다. 하나님이 인간의 육신을 입으신 모습, 이것을 바로 예수님이 우리에게 보여주셨습니다.
예수님은 시험 앞에서 하나님의 거룩하심을 보여주셨습니다. 영적 암흑과 마주해서는 하나님의 권위를 보이셨습니다. 사람들의 문제로 씨름하실 때에는 하나님의 지혜를 보여주셨습니다. 그리고 죽음으로 하나님의 사랑을 실증하셨습니다.
하나님은 무한하시고 우리의 생각에는 한계가 있어 우리가 하나님에 대해 모든 것을 알지 못해도 그리스도를 바라보면 하나님의 성품을 확실히 알 수 있습니다.

What Is God Like?
To celebrate a special occasion, my husband took me to a local art gallery and said I could choose a painting as a gift. I picked out a small picture of a brook flowing through a forest. The streambed took up most of the canvas, and because of this much of the sky was excluded from the picture. However, the stream’s reflection revealed the location of the sun, the treetops, and the hazy atmosphere. The only way to “see” the sky was to look at the surface of the water.
Jesus is like the stream, in a spiritual sense. When we want to see what God is like, we look at Jesus. The writer of Hebrews said He is “the exact representation of [God’s] being” (1:3). Although we can learn facts about God through direct statements in the Bible such as “God is love,” we can deepen our understanding by seeing the way God would act if He faced the same problems we have on Earth. Being God in human flesh, this is what Jesus has shown us.
In temptation, Jesus revealed God’s holiness. Confronting spiritual darkness, He demonstrated God’s authority. Wrestling with people problems, He showed us God’s wisdom. In His death, He illustrated God’s love.
Although we cannot grasp everything about God—He is limitless and we are limited in our thinking—we can be certain of His character when we look at Christ. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT
The Son is . . . the exact representation of [God’s] being.
Hebrews 1:3
Jesus is like the stream, in a spiritual sense. When we want to see what God is like, we look at Jesus. The writer of Hebrews said He is “the exact representation of [God’s] being” (1:3). Although we can learn facts about God through direct statements in the Bible such as “God is love,” we can deepen our understanding by seeing the way God would act if He faced the same problems we have on Earth. Being God in human flesh, this is what Jesus has shown us.

세상의 빛
내가 좋아하는 그림 중 하나는 영국 옥스퍼드에 있는 케블 대학의 예배당에 걸려 있습니다. 그 그림은 영국의 화가 윌리엄 홀만 헌트가 그린 ‘세상의 빛’이란 작품으로 예수님이 등불을 들고 어느 집의 문을 두드리는 모습을 보여줍니다.
흥미로운 장면은 그 문에 손잡이가 없다는 것입니다. 어떻게 문을 열 수 있느냐는 질문에 헌트는 요한계시록 3장 20절의 말씀을 그림으로 표현하고 싶었다고 설명하였습니다. “볼지어다 내가 문 밖에 서서 두드리노니 누구든지 내 음성을 듣고 문을 열면 내가 그에게로 들어가......”
요한 사도의 말씀과 그 그림은 예수님의 온유하심을 보여줍니다. 예수님은 평안을 주시고자 우리 영혼의 문을 조용히 두드리십니다. 예수님은 우리가 응답하기를 인내하며 서서 기다리십니다. 예수님은 억지로 문을 열고 우리 삶에 들어오지 않으시며 그의 뜻을 우리에게 강요하지 않으십니다. 대신 모든 사람에게 구원의 선물을 주시며 우리를 빛으로 인도하십니다.
누구든지 문을 열면 예수님은 들어가겠다고 약속하십니다. 그 외의 어떤 요구나 전제조건이 없습니다.

Light of the World
One of my favorite pieces of art hangs in the Keble College chapel in Oxford, England. The painting, The Light of the World by English artist William Holman Hunt, shows Jesus holding a lantern in His hand and knocking on a door to a home.
One of the intriguing aspects of the painting is that the door doesn’t have a handle. When questioned about the lack of a way to open the door, Hunt explained that he wanted to represent the imagery of Revelation 3:20, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.”
The apostle John’s words and the painting illustrate the kindness of Jesus. He gently knocks on the door of our souls with His offer of peace. Jesus stands and patiently waits for us to respond. He does not open the door Himself and force His way into our lives. He does not impose His will on ours. Instead, He offers to all people the gift of salvation and light to guide us.
To anyone who opens the door, He promises to enter. There are no other requirements or prerequisites.
If you hear the voice of Jesus and His gentle knock on the door of your soul, be encouraged that He patiently waits for you and will enter if you welcome Him in. - LISA SAMRA

사랑의 그림들
우리 아이들과 나는 새로운 일 하나를 매일 실천하기로 했습니다. 자기 전에 우리는 색연필들을 준비하고 촛불을 켭니다. 그리고 하나님께 우리의 길을 비춰달라고 기도한 후 일기장을 꺼내 두 개의 질문에 대해 그림이나 글로 답을 씁니다. ‘나는 오늘 언제 사랑했는가?’ ‘나는 오늘 언제 사랑하지 않았는가?’
이웃 사랑은 “처음부터” 그리스도인의 삶의 중요한 부분이었습니다(요한2서 1:5). 그래서 요한은 그의 두 번째 서신에서 하나님의 계명을 따라 서로 사랑하라고 성도들에게 쓴 것입니다(요한2서 1:5-6). 사랑은 요한이 그의 서신 어디에서나 자주 이야기한 주제입니다. 요한은 참사랑을 실천하는 것이 우리가 “진리에 속해 있다” 는 것과 하나님의 임재 안에 거한다는 것을 알 수 있는 한 방법이라고 말합니다(요한1서 3:18-19). 아이들과 함께 일기를 쓰면서 우리는 사랑의 모습은 우산을 같이 쓰거나, 슬퍼하는 사람을 위로하거나, 좋아하는 음식을 만들어주는 것과 같은 단순한 행동이라는 것을 깨닫습니다. 우리는 또한 사랑하지 않는 행동들도 쉽게 합니다. 험담을 하고, 함께 나누어 쓰기를 거절하고, 다른 사람들의 필요는 생각하지 않고 내 욕심만 채우는 행동입니다.
매일 밤 하루를 돌아보면 매일 매일을 더욱 깨어있게 되고, 살아가면서 성령님의 인도하심을 따라가는데 도움이 됩니다. 우리는 성령님의 도우심으로 사랑하며 사는 법을 배웁니다(요한2서 1:6).

Pictures of Love
My children and I have started a new daily practice. Every night at bedtime, we gather colored pencils and light a candle. Asking God to light our way, we get out our journals and draw or write answers to two questions: When did I show love today? and When did I withhold love today?
Loving our neighbors has been an important part of the Christian life “from the beginning” (2 JOHN 1:5). That’s what John writes in his second letter to his congregation, asking them to love one another in obedience to God (2 JOHN 1:5–6). Love is one of John’s favorite topics throughout his letters. He says that practicing real love is one way to know that we “belong to the truth,” that we’re living in God’s presence (1 JOHN 3:18–19). When my kids and I reflect, we find that in our lives love takes shape in simple actions: sharing an umbrella, encouraging someone who is sad, or cooking a favorite meal. The moments when we’re withholding love are equally practical: we gossip, refuse to share, or satisfy our own desires without thinking of others’ needs.
Paying attention each night helps us be more aware each day, more tuned in to what the Spirit might be showing us as we walk through our lives. With the Spirit’s help, we’re learning to walk in love (2 JOHN 1:6). - AMY PETERSON

쓰레기 더미 속의 반지
대학 시절 어느 날 아침 눈을 떠 보니 룸메이트인 캐럴이 안절부절못하고 있었습니다. 자기 이름이 새겨진 반지를 잃어버린 것입니다. 우리는 사방을 다 뒤져보았습니다. 다음 날 아침에는 쓰레기 더미까지 뒤졌습니다.
나는 쓰레기봉투 하나를 찢어서 열어보았습니다. “이걸 찾으려고 그렇게 애썼던 거야!”
“2백 불짜리 반지를 잃어버릴 수는 없잖아!” 친구가 소리쳤습니다.
캐럴의 집념은 예수님이 말씀하신 천국의 비유를 떠오르게 했습니다. “천국은 마치 밭에 감추인 보화와 같으니 사람이 이를 발견한 후 숨겨 두고 기뻐하며 돌아가서 자기의 소유를 다 팔아 그 밭을 사느니라” (마태복음 13:44). 세상의 어떤 것들은 힘들여 찾을 만한 가치가 있습니다.
성경 어디서나 하나님은 그를 찾는 자들을 만나 주신다고 약속하십니다. 신명기에서 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들이 그들의 죄에서 돌이켜 전심으로 하나님을 찾으면 만날 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(4:28-29). 역대하에서 아사 왕은 이와 비슷한 약속으로 용기를 얻었고(15:2), 예레미야서에서도 하나님은 유배된 자들에게 포로에서 풀려나 다시 돌아가게 하실 것이라고 같은 약속을 해주셨습니다(29:13-14).
우리가 하나님의 말씀과 예배, 그리고 매일의 삶 속에서 하나님을 찾는다면 하나님을 만날 것입니다. 그리고 시간이 지나면서 우리는 더 깊게 그분을 알게 될 것입니다. 그것은 캐럴이 쓰레기봉투에서 반지를 찾았을 때의 그 기쁨의 순간보다 훨씬 더 좋을 것입니다!

Ring in a Dumpster
In college, I woke up one morning to find Carol, my roommate, in a panic. Her signet ring was missing. We searched everywhere. The next morning we found ourselves picking through a dumpster.
I ripped open a trash bag. “You’re so dedicated to finding this!”
“I’m not losing a two-hundred-dollar ring!” she exclaimed.
Carol’s determination reminds me of the parable Jesus told about the kingdom of heaven, which “is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (MATTHEW 13:44). Certain things are worth going great lengths to find.
Throughout the Bible, God promises that those who seek Him will find Him. In Deuteronomy, He explained to the Israelites that they would find Him when they turned from their sin and sought Him with all their hearts (4:28–29). In the book of 2 Chronicles, King Asa gained encouragement from a similar promise (15:2). And in Jeremiah, God gave the same promise to the exiles, saying He would bring them back from captivity (29:13–14).
If we seek God, through His Word, worship, and in our daily lives, we will find Him. Over time, we’ll know Him on a deeper level. That will be even better than the sweet moment when Carol pulled her ring out of that trash bag! - JULIE SCHWAB

뇌성마비 장애를 안고 태어난 소년은 말이나 의사소통을 할 수 없었습니다. 그러나 결코 포기하지 않았던 그의 어머니 찬탈 브라이언은 아들이 열 살 되었을 때 드디어 두 눈과 문자판을 통해 그와 소통하는 방법을 찾아냈습니다. 이런 돌파구를 찾은 후 어머니는 말했습니다. “이제 아들은 잠김에서 풀렸고 우리는 아이에게 무엇이든 물어볼 수 있어요.” 조나단은 지금 자신의 눈으로 소통하며 시를 읽고 쓰기까지 할 수 있습니다. 자신의 가족이나 친구들과 “대화”하는 것이 어떤지 묻는 질문에 그는 “그들에게 사랑한다고 말할 수 있어 너무 좋아요.”라고 말했습니다.
내게 큰 감동을 준 조나단의 이야기는 하나님이 어떻게 우리를 죄의 감옥에서 풀어주셨는지를 생각하게 합니다. 바울사도가 골로새에 있는 그리스도인들에게 편지한 것처럼, 전에는 우리의 악한 행실 때문에 우리가 원수가 되어 “하나님으로부터 멀리 떠났지만”(골로새서 1:21), 이제는 십자가 위에서 그리스도가 죽으심으로 말미암아 우리가 “거룩한 자”(22절)로 하나님 앞에 세워지게 되었습니다. 우리는 이제 열매를 맺고 하나님을 아는 지식으로 자라며 하나님의 능력 안에서 강건해짐으로 “주님께 합당한 삶”(10-11절)을 살 수 있습니다.

Unlocked
A boy born with cerebral palsy was unable to speak or communicate. But his mother, Chantal Bryan, never gave up, and when he was ten years old she figured out how to communicate with him through his eyes and a letter board. After this breakthrough, she said, “He was unlocked and we could ask him anything.” Now Jonathan reads and writes, including poetry, by communicating through his eyes. When asked what it’s like to “talk” with his family and friends, he said, “It is wonderful to tell them I love them.”
Jonathan’s story is profoundly moving and leads me to consider how God unlocks us from the prison of sin. As the apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at Colossae, once we were “alienated from God” (COLOSSIANS 1:21), our evil behavior making us His enemy, but through Christ’s death on the cross we are now presented to God as “holy in his sight” (V 22). We may now “live a life worthy of the Lord” as we bear fruit, grow in the knowledge of God, and are strengthened in His power (VV 10–11).
We can use our unlocked voices to praise God and share His good news that we are no longer bound to a life of sin. As we continue in our faith, we can hold firm to our hope in Christ. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

Colossians 1:21-22
Jonathan’s story is profoundly moving and leads me to consider how God unlocks us from the prison of sin. As the apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at Colossae, once we were “alienated from God” (COLOSSIANS 1:21), our evil behavior making us His enemy, but through Christ’s death on the cross we are now presented to God as “holy in his sight” (V 22). 자유롭게 되다
어려서 시골에서 자라던 나에게 닭은 아주 흥미로운 존재였습니다. 닭을 붙잡았을 때마다 잠시 동안 누르고 있다가 가만히 놓아주면 닭은 여전히 눌려 있는 줄 알고 놓인 후에도 그 자리에 그대로 엎드려 있는 것이었습니다. 자기가 자유의 몸이 된 줄도 모르고 눌려 있다고 생각하는 것입니다.
우리가 예수님을 믿으면 예수님이 우리를 죄와 사탄의 올무에서 은혜로 풀어주십니다. 하지만 우리의 죄 짓던 습관과 행실을 바꾸는 데는 시간이 걸리기 때문에 사탄은 우리가 여전히 올무 안에 갇혀있다고 믿게 합니다. 그러나 성령님은 우리를 자유롭게 하셨고, 우리를 노예로 삼지 않으십니다. 바울은 로마인들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “그러므로 이제 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 자에게는 결코 정죄함이 없나니 이는 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 생명의 성령의 법이 죄와 사망의 법에서 너를 해방하였음이라” (로마서 8:1-2).
하나님은 우리의 성경읽기와 기도, 그리고 성령의 능력을 통해 우리를 정결케 하시고 하나님을 위해 살도록 우리 안에 역사하십니다. 성경은 우리에게 확신을 갖고 예수님과 자유롭게 동행하라고 권면합니다.
예수님은 “아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라”(요한복음 8:36)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리스도 안에 있는 우리의 자유로 주님을 더욱 사랑하고 섬길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Set Free
When I was a boy in the village, something about chickens fascinated me. Whenever I caught one, I held it down for a few moments and then gently released it. Thinking I was still holding it, the chicken remained down; even though it was free to dash away, it felt trapped.
When we put our faith in Jesus, He graciously delivers us from sin and the hold that Satan had on us. However, because it may take time to change our sinful habits and behavior, Satan can make us feel trapped. But God’s Spirit has set us free; He doesn’t enslave us. Paul told the Romans, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (ROMANS 8:1–2).
Through our Bible reading, prayer, and the power of the Holy Spirit, God works in us to cleanse us and to help us live for Him. The Bible encourages us to be confident in our walk with Jesus without feeling as if we are not set free.
Jesus said, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (JOHN 8:36). May the freedom we have in Christ spur us on to love Him and serve Him. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

감사기도
나는 여러 해 동안 영국의 작가 G. K. 체스터튼의 글을 즐겨 읽었습니다. 그의 유머와 통찰력에 때론 웃다가도 깊은 생각에 잠길 때가 있습니다. 예를 들면 이런 글이 있습니다. “당신은 식사 전에 감사기도를 하지요. 좋은 일입니다. 그러나 나는 연극과 오페라를 감상하기 전에, 음악회와 무언극이 시작되기 전에, 독서하기 전에, 스케치나 색칠, 수영, 펜싱, 권투, 걷기, 놀기, 춤추기 전에, 그리고 펜을 들어 잉크에 찍기 전에 감사기도를 하지요.”
식사 전에 항상 하나님께 감사하는 것은 좋은 일이지만 거기에 그치면 안 됩니다. 바울 사도는 모든 행동과 노력이 하나님께 감사드리고 그분의 영광을 위하는 것이 되어야 한다고 생각했습니다. “또 무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하고 그를 힘입어 하나님 아버지께 감사하라”(골로새서 3:17). 오락이나 직업, 교육 등 모든 것은 우리가 주님을 경외하고 그분께 감사를 표현하는 통로가 됩니다.

Saying Grace
For many years, I’ve enjoyed the writings of British author G. K. Chesterton. His humor and insight often cause me to chuckle and then pause for more serious contemplation. For example, he wrote, “You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the play and the opera, and grace before the concert and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing; and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.”
It’s good for us to thank the Lord before every meal, but it shouldn’t stop there. The apostle Paul saw every activity, every endeavor as something for which we should thank God and that we should do for His glory. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (COLOSSIANS 3:17). Recreation, occupation, and education are all avenues through which we can honor the Lord and express our gratefulness to Him.
Paul also encouraged the believers in Colossae to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful” (V 15).
