되돌릴 수 없는 지점

그것은 그저 강을 하나 더 건너는 것 같이 간단한 일이 아니었습니다. 법적으로 로마의 장군은 무장한 군대를 이끌고 로마로 들어가면 안 되었습니다. 그렇기 때문에 기원전 49년 줄리어스 시저가 그의 13군단을 이끌고 루비콘 강을 건너 이탈리아로 들어간 것은 반역 행위였습니다. 시저가 내린 결정의 영향은 돌이킬 수 없게 되어, 로마의 위대한 장군이 절대 군주가 되기까지 여러 해 동안 내전을 치러야 했습니다. 오늘날까지 “루비콘 강을 건너감”이란 관용구는 “되돌릴 수 없는 지점을 지나감”을 의미하고 있습니다.

가끔 우리는 다른 사람들에게 하는 말로써 이 루비콘 강을 건너는 것과 같은 행동을 합니다. 한 번 내뱉은 말은 되돌릴 수가 없습니다. 그 말들은 도움이나 위로를 줄 수도 있고 시저가 로마로 행진한 것과 같이 되돌릴 수 없게 느껴질 정도로 상처를 줄 수도 있습니다. 야고보는 말에 대해 달리 묘사하면서, “혀는 곧 불이요 불의의 세계라 혀는 우리 지체 중에서 온 몸을 더럽히고 삶의 수레바퀴를 불사르나니 그 사르는 것이 지옥 불에서 나느니라”(야고보서 3:6)라고 말합니다.

다른 사람에게 루비콘 강을 건너는 행동을 했다고 염려된다면 그들과 하나님께 용서를 구할 수 있습니다(마태복음 5:23-24; 요한1서 1:9). 그러나 더 좋은 것은 매일 성령 안에 거하면서 “너희 말을 항상 은혜 가운데서 하라”(골로새서 4:6)는 바울 사도의 도전을 받아들여 우리의 말로 주님을 높여 드릴 뿐 아니라 주변 사람들을 세우며 격려해주는 것입니다.

The Point of No Return

It wasn’t as simple as just crossing another river. By law, no Roman general could lead armed troops into Rome. So when Julius Caesar led his Thirteenth Legion across the Rubicon River and into Italy in 49 BC , it was an act of treason. The impact of Caesar’s decision was irreversible, generating years of civil war before Rome’s great general became absolute ruler. Still today, the phrase “crossing the Rubicon” is a metaphor for “passing the point of no return.”

Sometimes we can cross a relational Rubicon with the words we say to others. Once spoken, words can’t be taken back. They can either offer help and comfort or do damage that feels just as irreversible as Caesar’s march on Rome. James gave us another word picture about words when he said, “The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell” (JAMES 3:6).

When we fear we have crossed a Rubicon with someone, we can seek their forgiveness—and God’s (MATTHEW 5:23–24; 1 JOHN 1:9). But even better is to daily rest in God’s Spirit, hearing Paul’s challenge, “Let your conversation be always full of grace” (COLOSSIANS 4:6), so that our words will not only honor our Lord, but lift up and encourage those around us. - BILL CROWDER

하나님의 인도하심에 반응하기

2015년 8월, 집에서 두 시간 떨어진 대학교로 떠나려고 준비하다가, 어쩌면 졸업 후에도 집으로 다시 돌아오지 못할지도 모른다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그러자 이런 저런 생각들이 빠르게 스쳐 지나갔습니다. ‘어떻게 집을 떠나지? 내 가족은? 내 교회는? 나중에 하나님이 나를 다른 주나 다른 나라로 부르시면 어떻게 하지?’

하나님께서 모세에게 “바로에게 가서 [그분의] 백성 이스라엘 자손을 애굽에서 인도하여 나오라”(출애굽기 3:10)라고 말씀 하실 때 모세가 두려워했던 것처럼, 나도 두려웠습니다. 나는 나의 안락한 곳으로부터 떠나고 싶지 않았습니다. 그렇습니다, 모세도 하나님께 순종하고 따르기는 했지만, 그것도 하나님께 물어보고 자기 대신 다른 사람을 보내달라고 요청하고 난 후에야 그렇게 했습니다(11-13절; 4:13).

모세의 경우를 보며 우리는 하나님의 부르심이 확실하다고 느껴질 때 무엇을 하지 말아야 하는지를 알 수 있습니다. 그 대신 우리는 제자들처럼 행동하도록 애써야 합니다. 예수님께서 제자들을 부르셨을 때, 그들은 모든 것을 뒤로 하고 예수님을 따랐습니다(마태복음 4:20-22; 누가복음 5:28). 두려워하는 것이 자연스러운 일이지만, 우리는 하나님의 계획을 믿을 수 있어야 합니다.

집을 아주 멀리 떠나 지내는 것은 여전히 어려운 일이지만, 내가 계속해서 하나님을 찾을 때 하나님은 내가 있어야 할 곳에 있다는 것을 확인시켜주는 문들을 열어주십니다.

우리의 안락한 곳을 떠나도록 인도하실 때, 우리는 모세처럼 마지못해 가거나, 아니면 예수님이 인도하시는 곳이 어디든 따랐던 제자들처럼 기꺼이 갈 수 있습니다. 이것은 때로 우리가 우리의 안락한 거처를 떠나 수백, 아니 수천 마일 멀리 떠나는 것을 의미하기도 합니다. 하지만 아무리 힘들어 보이더라도, 예수님을 따르는 일은 가치 있는 일입니다.

Responding to God’s Leading

In August 2015, when I was preparing to attend a university a couple of hours from home, I realized I probably wouldn’t move back home after graduation. My mind raced. How can I leave home? My family? My church? What if God later calls me to another state or country?

Like Moses, when God told him to go “to Pharaoh to bring [His] people the Israelites out of Egypt” (EXODUS 3:10), I was afraid. I didn’t want to leave my comfort zone. Yes, Moses obeyed and followed God, but not before questioning Him and requesting that someone else go instead (VV 11–13; 4:13).

In Moses’s example, we can see what we shouldn’t do when we sense a clear calling. We can instead strive to be more like the disciples. When Jesus called them, they left everything and followed Him (MATTHEW 4:20–22; LUKE 5:28). Fear is natural, but we can trust God’s plan.

Being so far from home is still difficult. But as I continually seek God, He opens doors for me that confirm I am where I’m supposed to be.

When we are led out of our comfort zone, we can either go reluctantly, like Moses, or willingly like the disciples—who followed Jesus wherever He led them. Sometimes this means leaving our comfortable life hundreds or even thousands of miles behind us. But no matter how difficult it may be, following Jesus is worth it. - JULIE SCHWAB

하나님의 지문

리건 스티븐스는 그녀의 오빠 닉과 함께 등산하는 것을 좋아했습니다. 경험이 풍부한 등산가인 이 두 사람은 북아메리카의 최고봉인 맥킨리산(드날리) 정상에도 올랐습니다. 그런데 2008년 1월, 콜로라도 주에 있는 어느 산에서 눈사태에 휩쓸려 닉은 부상을 당하고 20살의 리건은 목숨을 잃고 말았습니다. 나중에 닉은 그녀의 손가방에서 일기를 찾았는데, 일기 내용을 읽고 나서 큰 위로를 받았습니다. 일기 속에는 다음과 같은 묵상과 기도, 그리고 하나님에 대한 찬양으로 가득 차 있었습니다. “나는 하나님이 서명한 예술 작품이다. 하지만 하나님의 작업이 끝난 것은 아니다. 사실 이제 막 시작하셨을 뿐이다...... 내게는 하나님의 지문이 있다. 앞으로도 나와 똑같은 사람은 결코 없을 것이다...... 나에게는 이 세상 그 누구도 대신 할 수 없는 일이 있다.”

비록 리건의 육신은 이 땅에 더 이상 존재하지 않지만, 그녀의 삶과 일기가 남긴 유산을 통해 그녀는 뒤에 남기고 떠난 사람들에게 영감과 도전을 던져줍니다.

우리는 하나님의 형상대로 창조되었으므로(창세기 1:26) 우리 각 사람은 “하나님이 서명하신 예술 작품”입니다. 바울 사도도 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이라”(에베소서 2:10).

다른 사람들을 돕기 위해 하나님의 때에 하나님의 방법대로 우리 한 사람 한 사람을 사용하시는 하나님을 찬양합시다.

The Fingerprint of God

Lygon Stevens loved to climb mountains with her brother Nick. They were experienced climbers and both had summitted Mt. McKinley (Denali), the highest point in North America. Then, in January 2008, they were swept off a Colorado mountain by an avalanche, injuring Nick and killing twenty-year-old Lygon. When Nick later discovered his sister’s journal in one of her satchels, he was deeply comforted by its contents. It was filled with reflections, prayers, and praise to God as seen in this entry: “I am a work of art, signed by God. But He’s not done; in fact, He has just begun. . . . I have on me the fingerprint of God. Never will there ever be another person like me. . . . I have a job to do in this life that no other can do.”

Although Lygon is no longer physically present on earth, through the legacy of her life and her journal she inspires and challenges those she left behind.

Because we are made in God’s image (GENESIS 1:26), each person is a “work of art, signed by God.” As the apostle Paul says, “We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (EPHESIANS 2:10).

Praise God that He uses each of us, in His own time and way, to help others. - DENNIS FISHER

약속 위에 서서

내 친구의 오빠가 어렸을 적에, 자기 여동생에게 “믿음”만 있으면 우산 하나로도 그녀를 공중에 붙들어 들어올리기에 충분하다고 확신에 차 얘기했습니다. 그래서 그녀는 “믿음”으로 창고 지붕에서 뛰어내렸고, 경미한 뇌진탕을 일으키며 기절했습니다.

하나님은 약속하신 것을 이행하실 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님의 약속이라고 주장할 때는 하나님이 ‘실제로’ 하신 말씀 위에 서 있어야만 하며, 우리는 그럴 때에만 하나님께서 약속하신 것을 행하시거나 주실 것이라는 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 믿음 그 자체에는 힘이 없습니다. 오직 확실하고 분명한 하나님의 약속에 근거했을 때에만 힘이 있습니다. 그렇지 않은 것들은 그저 이뤄지길 바라는 한낱 바람에 지나지 않습니다.

여기에 적합한 성경구절이 있습니다. 주님은 “무엇이든지 원하는 대로 구하라 그리하면 이루리라 너희가 열매를 많이 맺으면 내 아버지께서 영광을 받으실 것이요”(요한복음 15:7-8)라고 약속하셨습니다. 이 구절은 우리가 하는 기도를 하나님께서 다 들어 응답해주신다는 약속이 아니라, 그보다는 오히려 바울이 “성령의 열매”(갈라디아서 5:22-23)라고 부르는 개인적인 의로운 삶을 간구하는 기도에 하나님께서 하나하나 응답해주신다는 약속입니다. 우리가 거룩함에 굶주리고 갈급하여 하나님께 간구한다면, 하나님께서 우리를 만족시켜주시기 시작하실 것입니다. 영적인 성장도 육신의 성장과 마찬가지로 점진적인 것이기 때문에 시간이 걸릴 것입니다. 포기하지 말고, 거룩해져 가도록 계속해서 하나님께 간구하십시오. 하나님의 시간에, 또 하나님의 진도대로 “당신에게 이루어질 것입니다.” 하나님은 지키지 못할 약속들은 하시지 않습니다.

Standing on the Promises

My friend’s brother (when they were both children) assured his sister an umbrella had enough lift to hold her up if she would only “believe.” So “by faith” she jumped off a barn roof and knocked herself out, suffering a minor concussion.

What God has promised, He will do. But we must be sure we stand on God’s actual word when we claim a promise, for only then do we have the assurance that God will do or give what He’s promised. Faith has no power in itself. It only counts when it’s based on a clear and unambiguous promise from God. Anything else is just wishful thinking.

Here’s a case in point: God has promised, “Ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit” (JOHN 15:7–8). These verses are not a promise that God will answer every prayer we utter, but rather a promise that He will respond to every longing for personal righteousness—what Paul calls “the fruit of the Spirit” (GALATIANS 5:22–23). If we hunger and thirst for holiness and ask God for it, He will begin to satisfy us. It will take time; for spiritual growth, like human growth, is gradual. Don’t give up. Keep asking God to make you holy. In His time and at His pace “it will be done for you.” God doesn’t make promises He doesn’t keep. - DAVID H. ROPER

가까이 두기

딸아이를 학교에 데려다 주고 1마일 정도를 걸어 집으로 돌아오는 시간은 내가 마음만 먹는다면 성경 구절을 암송할 수 있는 좋은 기회입니다. 그 시간 동안 내 마음으로 하나님의 말씀을 묵상하면, 그 구절들이 그날이 다 가기 전에 나에게 위로와 지혜를 가져다주는 것을 종종 발견합니다.

모세는 약속의 땅으로 들어가기 위해 이스라엘백성들을 준비시킬 때, 그들에게 하나님의 명령과 규례를 지키라고 강권 했습니다(신명기 6:1-2). 모세는 그들이 번성하기를 바라면서 그 가르침들을 마음에 새기고 자녀들과 강론하라고 말했습니다 (6-7절). 심지어 그것들을 그들의 손목에 매고 이마에 붙이라고까지 했습니다(8절). 그는 그들이 하나님의 가르침을 잊지 않고 주님을 영화롭게 하며 주님의 축복을 기뻐하는 사람들로 살기를 원했습니다.

Keeping Close

My mile-long walk home from dropping off my daughter at her school gives me the opportunity to memorize some verses from the Bible—if I’m intentional about doing so. When I take those minutes to turn over God’s Word in my mind, I often find them coming back to me later in the day, bringing me comfort and wisdom.

When Moses prepared the Israelites to enter the Promised Land, he urged them to hold close to God’s commands and decrees (DEUTERONOMY 6:1–2). Wanting them to flourish, he said they should turn these instructions over in their minds and discuss them with their children (VV 6–7). He even said to tie them to their wrists and bind them to their foreheads (V 8). He didn’t want them to forget God’s instructions to live as people who honored the Lord and enjoyed His blessings.

How might you consider God’s words today? One idea is to write out a verse from Scripture, and every time you wash your hands or take a drink, read the words and turn them over in your mind. Or before you go to sleep, consider a short passage from the Bible as the last act of the day. Many are the ways of keeping God’s Word close to our hearts! - AMY BOUCHER PYE

창세 전

“하지만 하나님께 시작과 끝이 없고 언제나 계셨던 분이라면, 우리를 창조하시기 전에는 뭘 하고 계셨나요? 뭘 하시며 시간을 보내셨나요?” 하나님의 영원한 본성을 이야기하다 보면 이 질문을 하는 조숙한 주일학교 학생이 꼭 있습니다. 나는 그것이 약간 신비에 속하는 일이라고 대답해주곤 했습니다. 그러나 최근에 나는 성경이 이 질문에 답을 하고 있는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

요한복음 17장을 보면 예수님이 하나님 아버지께 기도하실 때, “아버지여......창세 전부터 나를 사랑하시므로”(24절)라고 말씀하십니다. 이것이 예수님이 우리에게 드러내 보여주신 하나님이십니다. 만물을 창조하고 다스리시기 전에, 하나님은 성령을 통해 그분의 아들을 사랑하신 아버지셨습니다. 예수님이 세례를 받으실 때, 하나님은 성령을 비둘기의 모습으로 보내셔서 “이는 내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자라”(마태복음 3:17) 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 하나님이 누구이신지를 드러내는 가장 기본적인 측면이 바로 이 밖으로 향하는, 생명을 주는 사랑입니다.

이런 우리 하나님의 모습이 얼마나 사랑스럽고 힘을 주는 진리인지요! 삼위일체이신 성부, 성자, 성령의 각 위께서 표현하시는 상호적이고 밖으로 향하는 사랑은 하나님의 본성을 이해하는 열쇠가 됩니다. 하나님 아버지께서 세상을 창조하시기 전에 무엇을 하셨냐고요? 성령으로 그 아들을 사랑하셨습니다. 하나님은 사랑이시고(요한1서 4:8), 바로 이 점이 우리가 그것이 어떤 의미인가를 깨닫는데 도움을 줍니다.

Before the Beginning

“But if God has no beginning and no end, and has always existed, what was He doing before He created us? How did He spend His time?” Some precocious Sunday school student always asks this question when we talk about God’s eternal nature. I used to respond that this was a bit of a mystery. But recently I learned that the Bible gives us an answer to this question.

When Jesus prays to His Father in John 17, He says “Father, . . . you loved me before the creation of the world” (V 24). This is God as revealed to us by Jesus: before He ever created the earth or ruled over it, God was a Father loving His Son through the Spirit. When Jesus was baptized, God sent His Spirit in the form of a dove and said, “This is my Son, whom I love” (MATTHEW 3:17). The most foundational aspect of God’s identity is this outgoing, life-giving love.

What a lovely and encouraging truth this is about our God! The mutual, outgoing love expressed by each member of the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—is key to understanding the nature of God. What was God the Father doing before the beginning of time? Loving His Son through the Spirit. God is love (1 JOHN 4:8), and this picture helps us begin to understand what that means. - AMY PETERSON

관점의 변화

우리 동네는 지난 30년 만에 가장 눈이 많은 겨울을 보냈습니다. 무지막지한 눈을 몇 시간 치우고 나니 근육에 통증이 왔습니다. 별로 성과도 없는 것처럼 느껴져 집안으로 들어와 지친 몸으로 신발을 벗자 벽난로의 온기와 그 주위에 모여 있던 아이들이 나를 반겨주었습니다. 피난처가 된 집안에서 창밖을 내다보다가 그 날씨를 바라보는 내 시각이 완전히 바뀌었습니다. 더 해야 할 일을 보는 것 대신에 나는 얼어붙은 나뭇가지의 아름다움과 스산한 겨울 풍경을 감싸 안고 있는 눈을 즐겁게 바라보았습니다.

나는 시편 73편을 읽으며, 아삽에게서 이와 비슷하지만 훨씬 가슴 아픈 시각의 변화를 보게 됩니다. 처음에 그는 악인들이 더 복을 받는 것처럼 보이는, 세상이 돌아가는 방식에 대해 한탄을 합니다. 그는 보통 사람들과 달리 다른 사람들의 선을 위해 사는 것에 대한 가치를 의심합니다(13절). 그러나 그는 하나님의 성소에 들어갈 때 관점이 달라집니다(16-17절). 그는 하나님께서 세상과 세상의 불의를 온전히 다스리실 것이며, 더욱 중요하게는, 하나님을 가까이 함이 복이라는 것을 기억하게 됩니다(28절).

우리 세상에서 끊임없어 보이는 문제들로 우리가 추위를 느낄 때, 우리는 기도로 하나님의 성소에 들어가, 주님의 판단이 우리의 판단보다 낫다는, 인생을 바꾸고 관점을 바꾸는 진리를 통해 따뜻해질 수 있습니다. 우리의 환경은 바뀌지 않을지 몰라도, 우리의 관점은 바뀔 수 있습니다.

A Change in Perspective

My hometown had experienced its heaviest winter in thirty years. My muscles ached from hours of shoveling the unrelenting snow. When I stepped inside after what felt like a fruitless effort, weary as I kicked off my boots, I was greeted by the warmth of a fire and my children gathered around it. As I gazed out the window from the shelter of my home, my perspective of the weather shifted completely. Instead of seeing more work to do, I savored the beauty of frosted tree branches and the way the snow blanketed the colorless landscape of winter.

I see a similar, but much more poignant, shift in Asaph when I read his words in Psalm 73. In the beginning, he laments the way the world seems to work, how wrongs seem to be rewarded. He doubts the value of being different than the crowd and living for the good of others (V 13). But when he enters the sanctuary of God, his outlook changes (VV 16–17): he remembers that God will deal with the world and its troubles perfectly and, more importantly, that it is good to be with God (V 28).

When we’re chilled by the seemingly ceaseless problems in our world, we can enter God’s sanctuary in prayer and be warmed through by the life-altering, perspective changing truth that His judgment is better than ours. Though our circumstances may not change, our perspective can. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

하나님을 갈망함

하루는 딸이 한 살 된 손자와 함께 우리 집을 방문했습니다. 나에게 볼일이 있어 외출을 해야 했는데, 내가 방을 나서자마자 손자가 울기 시작했습니다. 두 번 이런 일이 일어났는데 매번 나는 돌아가 아이와 함께 시간을 보냈습니다. 내가 세 번째로 나가려고 하자 손자의 작은 입술이 또 다시 떨리기 시작했습니다. 그때 딸이 “아빠, 그냥 데리고 가지 그러세요?”라고 말했습니다.

그 다음 일은 어느 조부모도 알 수 있는 일입니다. 단지 내가 손자를 사랑한다는 그 이유 때문에 손자는 내 차를 함께 타고 갔습니다.

우리의 마음이 하나님을 갈망하는 만큼 하나님이 우리를 사랑하신다는 것을 알게 되니 얼마나 좋은지 모릅니다. 성경은 “하나님이 우리를 사랑하시는 사랑을 우리가 알고 믿을”(요한1서 4:16) 수 있다고 확신시켜 줍니다. 하나님은 우리가 어떤 일을 하였거나 하지 못하였다고 해서 우리를 사랑하시는 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 훌륭하기 때문에 하나님이 사랑하시는 것이 전혀 아니라, 그분의 선하심과 신실하심 때문에 우리를 사랑하십니다. 우리 주변의 세상이 사랑하지 않고 불친절할 때, 우리는 희망과 평화의 원천이신 하나님의 변함없는 사랑에 의지할 수 있습니다.

우리 하나님 아버지의 마음은 예수님과 성령님이라는 선물을 통해 우리에게 전해졌습니다. 끝이 없는 사랑으로 하나님이 우리를 사랑한다는 확신이 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다!

Longing for God

One day my daughter was visiting with our one-year-old grandson. I was getting ready to leave the house on an errand, but as soon as I walked out of the room my grandson began to cry. It happened twice, and each time I went back and spent a moment with him. As I headed out the door the third time, his little lip began to quiver again. At that point my daughter said, “Dad, why don’t you just take him with you?”

Any grandparent could tell you what happened next. My grandson went along for the ride, just because I love him.

How good it is to know that the longings of our hearts for God are also met with love. The Bible assures us that we can “know and rely on the love God has for us” (1 JOHN 4:16). God doesn’t love us because of anything we have or haven’t done. His love isn’t based on our worthiness at all, but on His goodness and faithfulness. When the world around us is unloving and unkind, we can rely on God’s unchanging love as our source of hope and peace.

Our heavenly Father’s heart has gone out to us through the gift of His Son and His Spirit. How comforting is the assurance that God loves us with love that never ends! - JAMES BANKS

기대하며 기다림

영국의 옥스퍼드에서는 매년 5월 축제일(5월 1일) 이른 아침에 봄맞이를 위해서 많은 사람들이 모입니다. 아침 6시에 맥덜렌 대학 합창단이 맥덜렌 타워 꼭대기에서 노래를 부르는데, 수많은 사람들이 노래와 종소리에 따라 어둠이 걷히기를 기대하며 기다립니다.

그렇게 기다리며 흥겹게 떠드는 사람들처럼 나도 종종 기다리는 것이 있습니다. 나는 기도응답이나 주님의 인도하심을 기다립니다. 언제까지 기다려야 되는지 정확히는 모르지만 기대하며 기다리는 것을 배우고 있습니다. 시편 130 편에서 시편기자는 칠흑과 같은 상황에 처한 깊은 고통을 기록하고 있습니다. 그는 고난 가운데서도 하나님을 신뢰하며 새벽을 알리는 파수꾼 같이 계속 깨어 있기로 선택합니다. “파수꾼이 아침을 기다림보다 내 영혼이 주를 더 기다리나니 참으로 파수꾼이 아침을 기다림보다 더하도다”(6절).

어둠을 뚫고 나오는 하나님의 신실하심을 기대하기 때문에 시편기자는 그의 고통 가운데서도 희망을 가지고 견딥니다. 성경 전반에 걸쳐 발견되는 하나님의 약속에 근거하여 그는 처음에 빛을 보지 못하더라도 희망을 가지고 계속 기다립니다.

당신도 어두운 밤 가운데에 있다면 용기를 내십시오. 이 세상에서든 천국에서든, 새벽은 오고 있습니다! 그러는 동안에 희망을 잃지 말고 주님께서 구원해주실 것을 계속 기다리십시오. 주님은 신실하게 이루어주실 것입니다.

Waiting in Anticipation

Every May Day (May 1) in Oxford, England, an early morning crowd gathers to welcome spring. At 6:00, the Magdalen College Choir sings from the top of Magdalen Tower. Thousands wait in anticipation for the dark night to be broken by song and the ringing of bells.

Like the revelers, I often wait. I wait for answers to prayers or guidance from the Lord. Although I don’t know the exact time my wait will end, I’m learning to wait expectantly. In Psalm 130 the psalmist writes of being in deep distress facing a situation that feels like the blackest of nights. In the midst of his troubles, he chooses to trust God and stay alert like a guard on duty charged with announcing daybreak. “I wait for the LORD more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning” (V 6).

The anticipation of God’s faithfulness breaking through the darkness gives the psalmist hope to endure even in the midst of his suffering. Based on the promises of God found throughout Scripture, that hope allows him to keep waiting even though he has not yet seen the first rays of light.

Be encouraged if you are in the middle of a dark night. The dawn is coming—either in this life or in heaven! In the meantime, don’t give up hope but keep watching for the deliverance of the Lord. He will be faithful. LISA SAMRA

죄의 사슬을 끊음

탄자니아 잔지바르의 스톤 타운에 위치한 크라이스트처치 대성당을 방문하면서 가슴이 아주 뭉클했습니다. 그 건물이 한때 동 아프리카에서 가장 큰 노예 시장이 있던 곳에 자리
잡고 있기 때문이었습니다. 성당의 설계자들은 이곳이 복음이 종의 사슬을 끊는 것을 보여주는 실제적인 상징이 되기를 원했습니다. 그곳은 더 이상 사악하고 잔혹한 행위가 벌어지는 곳이 아니라 하나님의 은혜를 상징하는 장소가 되었습니다.

성당 건축가들은 바울 사도가 에베소 교회에 보낸 편지에서 “그의 피로 말미암아 속량 곧 죄 사함을 받았느니라”(에베소서 1:7) 라고 쓴 것처럼, 예수님의 십자가 죽음이 어떻게 죄로부터 자유롭게 하는지를 표현 하고 싶었습니다. 여기서 ‘속량’이라는 말은 구약시대 때 시장에서 사람들이 물건이나 사람을 다시 사올 때 쓰던 용어를 가리킵니다. 예수님은 죄와 악행으로 종이 된 삶에서 우리를 다시 사오십니다.

이 서신의 도입부에서(3-14절) 바울은 그리스도 안에서의 그의 자유를 생각하며 기쁨으로 벅차오르고 있습니다. 우리를 죄의 사슬에서 자유롭게 해준 예수님의 죽음을 통해 우리를 향한 하나님의 은혜를 베풀어주신 것을 바울은 구절구절마다 찬양하며 지적하고 있습니다. 우리는 하나님과 주의 영광을 위해 살도록 자유롭게 되었기 때문에 더 이상 죄의 노예가 될 필요가 없습니다.

Breaking the Chains

We found our visit to Christ Church Cathedral in Stone Town, Zanzibar, deeply moving, for it sits on the site of what was formerly the largest slave market in East Africa. The designers of this cathedral wanted to show through a physical symbol how the gospel breaks the chains of slavery. No longer would the location be a place of evil deeds and horrible atrocities, but of God’s embodied grace.

Those who built the cathedral wanted to express how Jesus’s death on the cross provides freedom from sin—that which the apostle Paul speaks of in his letter to the church at Ephesus: “In him we have redemption through his blood” (EPHESIANS 1:7). Here the word redemption points to the Old Testament’s notion of the marketplace, with someone buying back a person or item. Jesus buys back a person from a life of slavery to sin and wrongdoing.

In Paul’s opening words in this letter (VV 3–14), he bubbles over with joy at the thought of his freedom in Christ. He points, in layer after layer of praise, to God’s work of grace for
us through Jesus’s death, which sets us free from the cords of sin. No longer do we need to be slaves to sin, for we are set free to live for God and His glory. AMY BOUCHER PYE
