설령

인생의 여정에서 우리에게 엄청난 타격이 올 때도 있지만, 기적이 일어날 때도 있습니다.

바벨론에 포로로 잡혀 있던 세 젊은이는 그 땅을 지배하는 무시무시한 왕 앞에 서서, 어떤 상황에도 그들 위에 우뚝 솟은 거대한 금 신상에 절하지 않겠다고 담대히 선포했습니다. 그들은 같이 이렇게 선언했습니다. “우리가 섬기는 하나님이 계시다면 우리를 맹렬히 타는 풀무불 가운데에서 능히 건져내시겠고 왕의 손에서도 건져내시리이다 그렇게 아니하실지라도 우리가......금 신상에게 절하지도 아니할 줄을 아옵소서”(다니엘 3:17-18).

이 세 젊은이 사드락, 메삭, 아벳느고는 그 맹렬히 타는 풀무불에 던져졌지만, 하나님은 그들을 기적적으로 구해주셔서 그들의 머리카락 하나도 그을리지 아니하였고 겉옷에는 불탄 냄새도 없었습니 (19-27절). 그들은 죽을 각오가 되어 있었고, 하나님을 향한 그들의 믿음은 확고했습니다. “설령” 하나님이 그들을 구해주시지 않았더라도 말입니다.

하나님은 ‘설령’ 우리가 사랑하는 사람이 낫지 않고, ‘설령’ 우리가 직업을 잃게 되고, ‘설령’ 우리가 박해를 받게 되더라도 우리가 하나님께 매달려 있기를 원하십니다. 하나님은 우리를 삶 가운데 위험으로부터 구해주실 때도 있지만, 그렇게 하지 않으실 때도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 확고히 붙잡을 수 있는 진실은 “우리가 섬기는 하나님은 능히 하실 수 있고,” 우리를 사랑하시고, 모든 불같은 시련과 모든 ‘설령’의 경우에도 우리와 함께 하신다는 것입니다.

Even If

Sometimes life deals us a tremendous blow. Other times the miraculous happens.

Three young men, captives in Babylon, stood in front of the fear-some king of that land and boldly proclaimed that under no circumstances would they worship the giant image of gold towering above them. Together they declared: “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know . . . we will not . . . worship the image” (DANIEL 3:16–18).

These three men—Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego—were hurled into the fiery furnace; and God miraculously delivered them so that not a hair of their head was singed and their clothing was smoke-free (VV 19–27). They had been prepared to die but their trust in God was unwavering—“even if” He had not saved them.

God desires that we cling to Him— even if our loved one isn’t healed, even if we lose our job, even if we are persecuted. Sometimes God rescues us from danger in this life, and sometimes He doesn’t. But the truth we can hold firmly is this: “The God we serve is able,” loves us, and is with us in every fiery trial, every even if. - ALYSON KIEDA

흘러넘침

“안 돼! 안 돼! 안 돼! 정말 안 돼!” 나는 절규했습니다. 하지만 조금도 도움이 되지 못했습니다. 변기 물을 한 번 더 내림으로써 배수구가 막힌 문제를 멋지게 해결하려 했던 것이 내가 의도했던 바와는 정반대의 결과를 빚어내고 말았습니다. 변기의 손잡이를 누르는 순간 내가 잘못했다는 것을 알았습니다. 그리고 물이 흘러넘칠 때 나는 무기력하게 서 있었습니다.

우리 자녀들이 우유를 따르다가 가늠을 잘못해서 하얀 액체가 온 사방에 넘친 적이 얼마나 많습니까. 차 트렁크 안에서 2리터짜리 소다 병이 굴러다니고 있는 것을 기억하지 못해......그 병이 터져버리는 놀라운 일도 있습니다.

그렇습니다. 흘리는 것은 거의 결코 좋은 일이 아닙니다. 그러나 단 한 가지 예외가 있습니다. 바울 사도는 그들 안에서 ‘소망’이 자연스럽게 흘러 나오는 성령이 충만한 사람들을 묘사하는데 이 ‘흘러넘침’의 이미지를 사용하고 있습니다(로마서 15:13). 나는 우리 삶 속에 주님이 강하게 임하셔서 삶이 기쁨과 평강과 믿음으로 넘치도록 채워지는, 그 같은 그림을 좋아합니다. 그렇게 된다면, 실제로 우리가 하나님 아버지에 대한 확신을 즐거이 뿜어내고 표현하지 않을 수 없을 것입니다. 그것은 우리 삶의 아름답고 밝은 시절 동안일 수 있고, 아니면 우리의 삶이 뒤죽박죽일 때일 수도 있습니다. 어느 쪽이든, 그 맨 위에서 찰랑거리는 것은 그것으로 “흠뻑 젖은” 우리 주변 사람들에게 전해지는 생명에 찬 소망입니다.

Overflowing

“No! No! No! NO!” I screamed. It didn’t help. Not one bit. My brilliant solution for our plugged problem—flushing again—accomplished exactly the opposite of what I’d intended. I knew I had made a mistake the second I pushed the lever down. And I stood helplessly as water overflowed.

How many times have our kids tried to pour milk and misjudged the process, with white liquid flowing everywhere. Or maybe we failed to remember that a two-liter bottle of soda just rolled around in the trunk . . . with explosively startling results.

No, spills are almost never a good thing. But there might be just one exception. The apostle Paul uses that image, overflowing , to describe a people so full of God’s Spirit that what naturally spills out of them is hope (ROMANS 15:13). I love that picture, of being filled to the brim with joy, peace, and faith because of His powerful presence in our lives. So much so, in fact, that we can’t help but exude and express winsome confidence in our heavenly Father. That might be during the beautiful, sunny seasons of our lives. Or when the proverbial cup of our lives gets jostled. Either way, what sloshes out over the top is life-giving hope to those around us who are “drenched” by it. - ADAM HOLZ

하나님의 선하심을 찬양하라

우리 성경 공부 모임에서 누군가가 “우리들 자신의 시편을 써봅시다!”라고 제안했습니다. 처음에는 글 쓰는 재간이 없다고 이의를 제기하는 사람들도 있었지만, 격려를 주고받은 후 모두 다 하나님이 어떻게 자신의 삶 속에 역사해 오셨는지를 이야기하는 감동적인 시편들을 썼습니다. 시련이나 보호하심, 공급하심, 심지어 고통이나 눈물로부터 오래 지속되는 메시지들이 터져나와 우리 시편들에 매력적인 주제들을 제공해주었습니다. 시편 136편처럼, 우리의 각 시편은 ‘하나님의 사랑은 영원히 지속된다’는 진리를 드러내 보여주었습니다.

글로 쓰든 노래로 부르든 말로 하든, 우리 모두에게는 하나님의 사랑에 대해 말할 수 있는 이야기가 있습니다. 우리 중 어떤 사람들은 하나님이 어떻게 자기 백성들을 포로에서 건져내고 그의 원수들을 물리쳤는지를 말한 시편 136편 기자처럼 극적이거나 강렬한 경험을 했을 수도 있습니다(10-15절). 그리고 다음과 같이 단순히 하나님의 놀라운 창조를 묘사하는 사람들도 있을 것입니다. “지혜로 하늘을 지으신 이에게......땅을 물 위에 펴신 이에게......큰 빛을 지으신 이에게......해로 낮을 주관하신 이에게...... 달과 별들로 밤을 주관하게 하신 이에게”(5-9절).

하나님이 누구시며 어떤 일들을 하셨는지 기억하면 그분을 영화롭게 하는 찬양과 감사를 하게 됩니다. 그럴 때 우리는 ‘사랑이 영원토록 지속’되는 주님의 선하심에 관하여 “시와 찬송과 신령한 노래들로 서로 화답”(에베소서 5:19)할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑을 경험한 것을 당신 자신의 찬양의 노래로 바꾸고 주님의 끝없는 선하심이 흘러넘치는 것을 즐기십시오.

Praising God’s Goodness

Someone in our Bible-study group suggested, “Let’s write our own psalms!” Initially, some protested that they didn’t have the flair for writing, but after some encouragement everyone wrote a moving poetic song narrating how God had been working in their lives. Out of trials, protection, provision, and even pain and tears came enduring messages that gave our psalms fascinating themes. Like Psalm 136, each psalm revealed the truth that God’s love endures forever.

We all have a story to tell about God’s love—whether we write or sing or tell it. For some, our experiences may be dramatic or intense—like the writer of Psalm 136 who recounted how God delivered His people from captivity and conquered His enemies (VV 10–15). Others may simply describe God’s marvelous creation: “who by his understanding made the heavens . . . spread out the earth upon the waters . . . made the great lights— . . . the sun to govern the day . . . the moon and stars to govern the night” (VV 5–9).

Remembering who God is and what He has done brings out praise and thanksgiving that glorifies Him. We can then “[speak] to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit” (EPHESIANS 5:19) about the goodness of the Lord whose love endures forever ! Turn your experience of God’s love into a praise song of your own and enjoy an overflow of His never-ending goodness. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

따라가는 자유

고등학교 때 크로스컨트리 코치가 경주 전에 나에게 조언한 적이 있습니다, “선두에 서려고 하지 마라. 선두 주자들은 거의 대부분 빨리 지치게 된다.” 그 대신에 코치는 가장 빨리 달리는 주자들 뒤에 가깝게 있으라고 제안했습니다. 그들에게 선두를 달리게 하면서 나는 경주를 잘 마치는데 필요한 정신적 육체적 힘을 아낄 수 있었습니다.

선두에 서는 것은 지치는 일일 수 있지만, 선두를 따라가는 것은 자유로울 수 있습니다. 이 점을 알게 되면서 나의 달리기는 좋아졌지만, 이것이 어떻게 그리스도인의 제자도에 적용되는지 깨닫는 데에는 꽤 오랜 시간이 걸렸습니다. 나는 살면서 예수님을 믿는 신자가 된다는 것이 ‘아주 열심히’ 노력하는 것을 의미한다고 생각하는 경향이 있었습니다. 그리스도인이면 이래야 한다고 내 스스로 정한 힘에 부치는 기대치를 추구하면서, 나는 단순히 주님을 따르는 가운데 발견되는 기쁨과 자유를 무심코 놓치고 있었습니다(요한복음8:32,36).

그러나 우리는 우리 자신의 삶을 스스로 영위하도록 만들어지지 않았으며, 예수님도 자기 계발 프로그램을 시작하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님은 그 대신 주님을 찾음으로 우리가 갈망하는 쉼을 얻을 것이라고 약속하셨습니다(마태복음 11:25-28). 성경이나 정교한 일련의 규범들을 철저히 공부할 것을 강조하는 다른 많은 종교지도자들과는 달리, 예수님은 단순히 주님을 앎으로써 하나님을 알게 된다고 가르치셨습니다 (27절). 주님을 찾을 때, 우리는 우리의 무거운 짐이 벗겨지고(28-30절), 우리의 삶이 변화되는 것을 보게 됩니다.

우리의 온유하고 겸손한 지도자이신(29절) 주님을 따르는 것이 하나도 힘이 들지 않기 때문에, 그것은 희망과 치유의 길입니다. 주님의 사랑 안에서 쉴 때 우리는 자유롭습니다.

Free to Follow

My high school cross-country coach once advised me before a race, “Don’t try to be in the lead. The leaders almost always burn out too quickly.” Instead, he suggested I stay close behind the fastest runners. By letting them set the pace, I could conserve the mental and physical strength I’d need to finish the race well.

Leading can be exhausting; following can be freeing. Knowing this improved my running, but it took me a lot longer to realize how this applies to Christian discipleship. In my own life, I was prone to think being a believer in Jesus meant trying really hard . By pursuing my own exhausting expectations for what a Christian should be, I was inadvertently missing the joy and freedom found in simply following Him (JOHN 8:32, 36).

But we weren’t meant to direct our own lives, and Jesus didn’t start a self-improvement program. Instead, He promised that in seeking Him we will find the rest we long for (MATTHEW 11:25–28). Unlike many other religious teachers’ emphasis on rigorous study of Scripture or an elaborate set of rules, Jesus taught that it’s simply through knowing Him that we know God (V 27). In seeking Him, we find our heavy burdens lifted (VV 28–30) and our lives transformed.

Because following Him, our gentle and humble Leader (V 29), is never burdensome—it’s the way of hope and healing. Resting in His love, we are free. - MONICA BRANDS

일하시는 하나님

“일하시는 하나님을 최근에 어떻게 만나보았니?”라고 친구들에게 물었습니다. 한 친구가 대답했습니다. “매일 아침 성경을 읽을 때 하나님이 일하시는 것을 봐. 매일 새날을 맞이하도록 도와주실 때도 보고, 하나님이 모든 길에 나와 함께 하셨다는 것을 깨달을 때도 보게 돼. 내게 기쁨을 주시면서도 동시에 도전에 대처할 수 있도록 어떻게 도우셨는지를 깨닫고 있어.” 나는 그의 대답이 정말 마음에 듭니다. 왜냐하면 그의 대답은 하나님의 말씀과 내주하시는 성령을 통해 하나님이 그분을 사랑하는 사람들 가까이 계시면서 그들 안에서 어떻게 일하시는지를 보여주고 있기 때문입니다.

하나님을 따르는 자들 가운데 나타나는 그분의 역사는 놀라운 신비입니다. 히브리서 저자는 축도로 알려진 글로 편지를 마무리하면서 그것을 이렇게 언급하고 있습니다. “......그 앞에 즐거운 것을 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 우리 가운데서 이루시기를 원하노라” (히브리서 13:21). 이렇게 마무리 지음으로써 저자는 하나님께서 그의 백성들이 그분을 따를 수 있도록 준비시켜 주시고, 하나님이 그분의 영광을 위해 그들 안에서, 그들을 통해 역사하실 것이라는 서신의 주요 메시지를 강조하고 있습니다.

우리 안에서 일하시는 하나님의 선물로 놀랍게도 우리는 아마도 우리에게 잘못한 사람을 용서하게 되거나 대하기 힘든 사람을 인내심을 갖고 대하게 될지도 모릅니다. 우리의 “평강의 하나님”(20절)은 그분의 사랑과 평화를 우리 안에서, 그리고 우리를 통해 전파하십니다. 일하시는 하나님을 최근에 어떻게 만나보셨습니까?

God at Work

“How have you seen God at work lately?” I asked some friends. One replied, “I see Him at work as I read the Scriptures each morning; I see Him at work as He helps me face each new day; I see Him at work when I know that He has been with me every step of the way—I realize how He has helped me to face challenges while giving me joy.” I love his answer because it reflects how through God’s Word and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, God stays near to, and works in, those who love Him.

God working in His followers is a wonderful mystery that the writer to the Hebrews refers to as he draws his letter to a close in what’s known as a benediction: “. . . and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ” (HEBREWS 13:21). With this conclusion, the writer reinforces the essential message of his letter—that God will equip His people to follow Him and that God will work in and through them for His glory.

The gift of God working in us can take us by surprise; perhaps we forgive someone who wrongs us or show patience to someone we find difficult. Our “God of peace” (V 20) spreads His love and peace in and through us. How have you seen God at work lately? - AMY BOUCHER PYE

보이는 것이 전부가 아니다

“들어보세요!” 전화로 아내가 말했습니다. “우리 마당에 원숭이가 있어요!” 그녀는 내가 들을 수 있게 전화기를 치켜들었습니다. 그 소리는 정말 원숭이 소리 같이 들렸습니다. 하지만 이상했습니다. 왜냐하면 야생 원숭이가 사는 곳이 가장 가까운 곳도 2천 마일이나 떨어져 있었기 때문입니다.

나중에 장인어른이 우리의 환상을 깨뜨려 주었습니다 . “그건 아메리카 올빼미야.”라고 그가 설명했습니다. 현실은 우리가 느낀 것과는 달랐습니다.

산헤립 왕의 군대가 유다왕 히스기야가 있는 예루살렘 성을 에워쌌을때, 앗수르인들은 승리가 그들의 것이라고 생각했습니다. 하지만 실제 상황은 다르게 나타났습니다. 앗수르의 야전사령관이 그럴듯한 말로 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 척했지만, 주님의 손은 그분의 백성들 위에 머물러 있었습니다.

“내가 어찌 여호와의 뜻이 아니고야 이제 이곳을 멸하러 올라왔겠느냐”(열왕기하 18:25)라고 그 사령관이 말했습니다. 예루살렘에게 항복할 것을 회유하면서 그는 이렇게까지 말했습니다. “너희는 죽음 대신에 생명을 택하라”(32절).

그것은 하나님이 하시는 말씀처럼 ‘들립니다’. 그러나 이사야 선지자는 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님의 참된 말씀을 전해주었습니다. 하나님은 “[산헤립은] 이 성에 이르지 못하며 이리로 화살을 쏘지 못하며” “내가 이 성을 보호하여 구원하리라”(19:32-34; 이사야 37:35) 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 바로 그날 밤, “여호와의 사자”가 앗수르 사람들을 쳤습니다(35절).

이따금 우리는 하나님의 능력을 부인하면서 그럴듯한 말로 구슬리며 “조언”하는 사람들을 만납니다. 그것은 하나님의 음성이 아닙니다. 하나님은 그분의 말씀인 성경을 통해 우리에게 말씀하시고, 성령으로 우리를 인도해주십니다. 하나님의 손은 그분을 따르는 자들 위에 있고, 하나님은 우리를 결코 버리시지 않을 것입니다.

Not What It Seems

“Listen!” my wife said to me over the phone. “There’s a monkey in our yard!” She held up the phone so I could hear. And yes, it sounded just like a monkey. Which is weird, because the nearest wild monkey was 2,000 miles away.

Later, my father-in-law burst our bubble. “That’s a barred owl,” he explained. Reality was not what it had seemed.

When King Sennacherib’s armies had Judah’s King Hezekiah trapped inside Jerusalem’s walls, the Assyrians thought victory was theirs. Reality proved different. Although the Assyrian field commander used smooth words and pretended to speak for God, the Lord had His hand on His people.

“Have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the LORD ?” the commander asked (2 KINGS 18:25). As he tried to entice Jerusalem to surrender, he even said, “Choose life and not death!” (V 32).

That sounds like something God would say. But the prophet Isaiah told the Israelites the true words of the Lord. “[Sennacherib] will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here,” God said. “I will defend this city and save it” (19:32–34; ISAIAH 37:35). That very night “the angel of the LORD ” destroyed the Assyrians (V 35).

From time to time, we’ll encounter smooth-talking people who “advise” us while denying God’s power. That isn’t God’s voice. He speaks to us through His Word. He guides us with His Spirit. His hand is on those who follow Him, and He will never abandon us. - TIM GUSTAFSON

천국에 쌓은 보물

내가 자랄 때, 나와 두 여동생은 향나무를 입힌 어머니의 큰 서랍장 위에 나란히 앉는 것을 좋아했습니다. 어머니는 우리의 털 스웨터와 할머니의 자수나 코바늘 뜨개질한 세공품들을 그 안에 보관했습니다. 어머니는 그 서랍장 안의 물건들을 소중히 여기셨고, 향나무의 톡 쏘는 향은 안에 있는 것들이 좀이 먹어 망가지는 것을 막아주었습니다.

이 땅의 대부분의 소유물은 곤충이나 녹에 의해 쉽게 파괴되거나 심지어 도난 당하기도 합니다. 마태복음 6장은 우리로 하여금 제한된 수명을 가진 것들이 아닌 ‘영원한’ 가치가 있는 것들에 특별히 초점을 두도록 권장합니다. 어머니가 쉰일곱 살에 돌아가실 때까지 세상의 소유물을 많이 모아 두지는 않으셨지만, 나는 어머니가 천국에 쌓아두셨을 보물을 생각하며 기뻐합니다(19-20절).

나는 어머니가 얼마나 하나님을 사랑했고, 눈에 띄지 않게 하나님을 섬겼는지 기억합니다. 가족을 믿음으로 돌보았고, 주일학교에서 아이들을 가르쳤으며, 남편에게 버림받은 여성의 친구가 되어주었고, 아기를 잃은 젊은 엄마를 위로해주었습니다. 그리고 어머니는 ‘기도하셨습니다’...... 시력을 잃고 휠체어에 의지하게 된 이후에도, 어머니는 계속해서 다른 사람들을 사랑하고 그들을 위해 기도하셨습니다.

우리의 진정한 보물은 우리가 쌓아놓은 것으로 측정되지 않고, 무엇에 혹은 누구에게 우리의 시간과 열정을 투자했는지로 측정됩니다. 예수님을 섬기고 따르면서 우리는 천국에 어떤 “보물들”을 쌓고 있습니까?

Treasure in Heaven

When I was growing up, my two sisters and I liked to sit side-by-side on top of my mother’s large cedar-lined chest. My mom kept our wool sweaters in it and handiwork that was embroidered or crocheted by my grandmother. She valued the contents of the chest and relied on the pungent odor of the cedar wood to discourage moths from destroying what was inside.

Most earthly possessions can easily be destroyed by insects or rust, or can even be stolen. Matthew 6 encourages us to place a special focus—not on things that have a limited lifespan but on those that have eternal value. When my mom died at fifty-seven, she had not accumulated a lot of earthly possessions, but I like to think about the treasure she stored up in heaven (VV 19–20).

I recall how much she loved God and served Him in quiet ways: caring faithfully for her family, teaching children in Sunday school, befriending a woman abandoned by her husband, comforting a young mother who had lost her baby. And she prayed . . . . Even after she lost her sight and became confined to a wheelchair, she continued to love and pray for others.

Our real treasure isn’t measured in what we accumulate—but in what or whom we invest our time and our passions. What “treasures” are we storing up in heaven by serving and following Jesus? - CINDY HESS KASPER

시간을 내라

최근에 미국으로 이주해 온 시리아 여인 리마는 자신이 왜 화가 났는지 손동작과 짧은 영어로 그녀의 선생님에게 설명하려고 애썼습니다. 그녀가 만든 파타이어(고기, 치즈, 시금치를 넣고 구운 파이)가 가지런히 놓인 접시를 들어 올릴 때, 눈물이 그녀의 뺨을 타고 흘러내렸습니다. 그러고 나서 그녀는 “한 사람”이라고 말하면서, 휙 소리를 내면서 손으로 문에서 거실 그리고 다시 문 쪽을 가리켰습니다. 그 선생님은 이야기를 꿰어 맞추어 근처 교회의 몇몇 사람들이 리마와 그녀의 가족을 방문하고 선물을 가져오기로 했다는 것을 알았습니다. 그런데, 오직 한 사람만 나타난 것입니다. 그 사람도 급히 들어와서는 물건이 담긴 상자를 내려놓고 서둘러 가버렸습니다. 그녀와 그녀의 가족은 외로워서 함께 교제하고 새로운 친구들과 파타이어를 나누고 싶어 했는데, 그 사람은 자기 책임만 다하는데 바빴던 것입니다.

사람들을 위해 시간을 내는 것이 예수님이 하신 일의 전부입니다. 예수님은 저녁 모임들에 참석하셨고, 군중들을 가르치셨으며, 개인들과 교류하기 위해 시간을 내셨습니다. 심지어 스스로 한 사람의 집으로 찾아가시기도 했습니다. 예수님을 보기 위해 나무 위에 올라갔던 세리 삭개오를 예수님께서 올려다보시고는 “속히 내려오라 내가 오늘 네 집에 유하여야 하겠다”(누가복음 19:1-9)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 삭개오의 삶은 영원히 바뀌었습니다.

해야 할 다른 일들이 있어서 우리가 언제나 시간을 낼 수 있는 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 우리가 시간을 낼 때, 우리는 다른 이들과 함께 하는 특권과 우리를 통해 주님께서 일하시는 것을 볼 수 있는 놀라운 특권을 갖게 됩니다.

Take the Time

Rima, a Syrian woman who had recently moved to the United States, tried to explain to her tutor with hand motions and limited English why she was upset. Tears trickled down her cheeks as she held up a beautifully arranged platter of fatayer (meat, cheese, and spinach pies) that she had made. Then she said, “One man,” and made a swishing sound as she pointed from the door to the living room and then back to the door. The tutor pieced together that several people from a nearby church were supposed to visit Rima and her family and bring some gifts. But only one man had shown up. He had hurried in, dropped off a box of items, and rushed out. He was busy taking care of a responsibility, while she and her family were lonely and longed for community and to share their fatayer with new friends.

Taking time for people is what Jesus was all about. He attended dinner parties, taught crowds, and took time for interaction with individuals. He even invited Himself to one man’s house. Zacchaeus, a tax collector, climbed a tree to see Him, and when Jesus looked up, He said, “Come down immediately. I must stay at your house today” (LUKE 19:1–9). And Zacchaeus’s life was changed forever.

Because of other responsibilities, we won’t always be able to take the time. But when we do, we have a wonderful privilege of being with others and watching the Lord work through us. - ANNE CETAS

평화롭게 인내하기

하나님을 의지하며 만성통증과 싸우고 있는 나에게는 아주 작은 좌절조차도 적의 맹렬한 공격처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 첫 번째 문제가 오른쪽에서 나를 찌르면 두 번째 문제가 뒤에서 나를 밀치고, 세 번째 문제가 내 얼굴을 정통으로 때립니다. 이럴 때는 내 힘이 약해지고 즉각적인 도움조차 나를 피해가서, 도망치고 숨는 것이 좋겠다는 생각이 들기도 합니다. 그러나 내가 고통에서 벗어나거나, 환경을 바꾸거나, 또 내 감정을 무시할 수도 없기 때문에, 그것들을 헤쳐 나가기 위해 하나님을 의지하는 법을 천천히 배우고 있습니다.

나에게 격려와 위로와 용기가 필요할때, 나는 자신의 상황을 정직하게 하나님께 가지고 나온 시편 기자들의 노래를 기도 하듯이 꼼꼼히 읽습니다. 내가 좋아하는 시편 중 하나는 다윗왕이 그를 죽이고 왕국을 빼앗으려고 하는 자신의 아들 압살롬으로부터 도망치는 부분입니다. 다윗은 비록 그의 고통스러운 상황을 탄식했지만(시편 3:1-2), 하나님께서 보호해주실 것을 믿었고, 자신의 기도에 응답해 주시리라 기대했습니다 (3-4절). 다윗왕은 하나님께서 자기를 붙드시고 구해주실 것을 믿었기 때문에(5-8절), 무슨 일이 일어날지 걱정하거나 두려워하는 것으로 잠을 설치지 않았습니다.

육체적 정신적 고통은 종종 난폭한 적군들 같이 느껴질 수 있습니다. 우리가 지치고 지금 겪고 있는 싸움의 끝이 보이지 않을 때, 우리는 포기하거나 달아나고 싶은 유혹을 느낄 수도 있습니다. 그러나 다윗처럼 우리도 변함없이 사랑하시는 하나님의 임재 안에서, 하나님께서 우리를 붙드시고 우리가 안식하도록 도우실 거라는 믿음을 배울 수 있습니다.

Persevering with Peace

As I continue trusting God through my struggles with chronic pain, even the simplest setback can feel like a fierce enemy attacker. Problem One jabs me from the right. Problem Two shoves me from behind. Problem Three punches me square in the nose. During these times, when my strength wanes and immediate relief evades me, running and hiding can seem like a good idea. But since I can’t escape my pain, change my circumstances, or ignore my emotions, I’m learning slowly to rely on God to carry me through.

When I need encouragement, comfort, and courage, I prayerfully read through the songs of the psalmists, who honestly bring their situations to God. In one of my favorite psalms, King David flees from Absalom, his son who wanted to kill him and take his kingdom. Though David lamented his painful situation (PSALM 3:1–2), he trusted God’s protection and expected Him to answer his prayers (VV 3–4). The king didn’t lose sleep worrying or fearing what could happen, because he trusted God to sustain and save him (VV 5–8).

Physical and emotional pain can often feel like aggressive adversaries. We may be tempted to give up or wish we could escape when we’re weary and can’t see the end of our current battle. But, like David, we can learn to trust that God will hold us up and help us rest in His constant and loving presence. - XOCHITL DIXON

먼 곳에 있는 땅

에이미 카마이클(1867-1951)은 인도에서 고아가 된 여자아이들을 구조해 그들에게 새로운 삶을 주었던 업적으로 유명합니다. 이 고된 일을 하는 가운데도 그녀가 “환상의 순간”이라고 말한 시간들이 있었습니다. 그녀의 책 ‘황금 같은 달빛’에서 그녀는 “어느 날 몹시 바쁜 가운데 우리는 아주 어렴풋이 ‘먼 곳에 있는 땅’을 잠깐 볼 수 있었고, 그래서 길에 꼼짝도 못하고 가만히 서 있었다.”라고 썼습니다.

이사야 선지자는 하나님을 반역하던 백성들이 돌이켰을 때에 대해 말했습니다. “네 눈은 왕을 그의 아름다운 가운데에서 보며 광활한 땅을 눈으로 보겠고”(이사야 33:17). 이 “먼 곳에 있는 땅”을 보려면 현재 당장 처한 상황을 넘어서서 영원한 관점을 가져야만 합니다. 주님은 우리가 역경 가운데에서 주님의 관점으로 우리의 삶을 보고 희망을 다시 갖게 해주십니다. “대저 여호와는 우리 재판장이시요 여호와는 우리에게 율법을 세우신 이요 여호와는 우리의 왕이시니 그가 우리를 구원하실 것임이라”(22절).

하루하루 우리는 절망 속에 아래만 보고 살아가든지, 우리의 눈을 들어 “먼 곳에 있는 땅”, 곧 “위엄 중에 우리와 함께 계시는”(21절) 주님을 바라보든지 선택할 수 있습니다.

에이미 카마이클은 인도에서 50년 이상을 지내며 커다란 곤경에 처했던 젊은 여성들을 도와주었습니다. 그녀가 어떻게 그 일을 할 수 있었을까요? 하루하루 그녀는 예수님께 시선을 고정하고 그녀의 삶을
주님의 보호 안에 맡겼던 것입니다. 우리도 그렇게 할 수 있습니다.

The Land of Far Distances

Amy Carmichael (1867–1951) is known for her work of rescuing orphaned girls in India and giving them a new life. In the midst of this exhausting work there were times she called “moments of vision.” In her book Gold by Moonlight, she wrote, “In the midst of a crowded day we are given almost a glimpse of ‘the land of far distances,’ and we stand still, arrested on the road.”

The prophet Isaiah spoke of a time when God’s rebellious people would turn back to Him. “Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar” (ISAIAH 33:17). To view this “land of far distances” is to be lifted above the circumstances of the immediate present and to gain an eternal perspective. During difficult times, the Lord enables us to see our lives from His viewpoint and regain hope. “For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; it is he who will save us” (V 22).

Each day, we can choose to look down in discouragement or lift our eyes to “the land of far distances,” to the Lord who is “our Mighty One” (V 21).

Amy Carmichael spent more than fifty years in India helping young women in great need. How did she do it? Each day she fixed her eyes on Jesus and placed her life in His care. And so can we. - DAVID C. MCCASLAND
