고통을 숨김

내가 초빙 강사로 지역 교회에 가서 다룬 주제는 하나님 앞에 우리의 망가진 모습을 가지고 나아가 그가 주시려는 치유를 받아들이자는 솔직한 이야기였습니다. 마치는 기도를 하기 전에 그 교회 담임 목사님이 가운데 통로로 나와 서서 교인들과 눈을 맞추며 이렇게 말했습니다. “저는 여러분들의 목사로 주중에 여러분들을 만나 망가진 삶의 가슴 아픈 이야기들을 듣습니다. 그러다 주일 예배 때에는 자신의 상처를 감춰버리는 여러분의 모습들을 볼 때 가슴이 아픕니다.”

하나님이 오셔서 치유하신 그 숨겨진 상처들을 생각할 때 내 마음도 많이 아팠습니다. 히브리서 기자는 하나님의 말씀은 살아있고 활력이 있다고 하였습니다. 많은 사람들은 이 “말씀”이 성경인 것을 알지만, 사실은 그 이상입니다. 예수님이 ‘살아있는’ 하나님의 말씀입니다. 그는 우리의 생각과 태도를 보십니다. 그리고 우리를 여전히 사랑하십니다.

예수님은 우리를 언제나 하나님 앞으로 나아갈 수 있게 하시려고 돌아가셨습니다. 우리의 ‘모든 것을 모든 사람과’ 나누는 것은 지혜롭지 않다는 것을 알지만, 또한 교회란 깨어지고 용서 받은 그리스도인들이 서로 감추지 않고 살 수 있는 곳이 되기를 하나님이 원하시는 것도 알고 있습니다. 교회는 우리가 “짐을 서로 지는”(갈라디아서 6:2) 곳이 되어야 합니다.

오늘 다른 사람들에게 숨기는 것이 있습니까? 그리고 하나님에게도 감추려는 것이 있는지요? 하나님은 예수님을 통해 우리를 보십니다. 그리고 여전히 우리를 사랑하십니다. 그분을 받아들이지 않으시렵니까?

Hiding Our Hurts

I was guest-speaking in a local church and my topic was an honest story about presenting our brokenness before God and receiving the healing He wants to give. Before closing in prayer, the pastor stood in the center aisle, looked deeply into the eyes of his gathered congregants, and said, “As your pastor I have the privilege of seeing you midweek and hearing your heart-breaking stories of brokenness. Then in our weekend worship services, I have the pain of watching you hide your hurt away.”

My heart ached at the hidden hurts God came to heal. The writer of Hebrews describes the Word of God as alive and active. Many have understood this “word” to be the Bible, but it’s even more than that. Jesus is the living Word of God. He evaluates our thoughts and attitudes—and loves us still.

Jesus died to give us access to God’s presence, all the time. And while we all know it’s not wise to share everything with everyone, we also know that God intends His church be a place where we can live unapologetically as broken and forgiven followers of Christ. It’s to be a place where we “carry each other’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2).

What are you hiding from others today? And how are you trying to hide from God as well? God sees us through Jesus. And He still loves us. Will we let Him? - ELISA MORGAN

주님은 우리를 알고 계신다

한 밤에 160킬로미터 거리의 우리 마을을 향해 운전해 가는 나를 하나님은 아셨을까요? 당시의 상황을 생각하면 그 대답은
그리 간단하지 않습니다. 열이 몹시 나고 머리가 아팠습니다. 그래서 기도했습니다. “주님, 저와 함께 하시는 것을 알지만, 지금 너무나 아픕니다!”

피곤에 지친 나는 한 작은 마을의 길가에 차를 세웠습니다. 10분이 지나서 “여보세요, 도와드릴까요?”라는 목소리가 들렸습니다. 한 남자가 마을 사람들과 함께 서 있었습니다. 나는 그들을 보고 마음이 편해졌습니다. 그들로부터 마을 이름이 ‘나아 미 냘라’(“왕이 나에 대해 아신다!”라는 의미)라는 말을 듣고는 몹시 놀랐습니다. 이전에 멈추지 않고 이 마을을 수십 번이나
지나쳤었는데, 이번에는 몸이 아파 길가에 홀로 있을 때 왕이신 주님께서 참으로 나와 함께 계시다는 사실을 이 마을의 이름을 통해 알게 해주신 것입니다. 힘을 얻은 나는 가까운 병원으로 갔습니다.

우리가 어떤 장소와 상황에 있든지, 우리의 모든 조건과 상관없이 하나님은 일상을 살아가는 우리 모습을 빠짐없이 알고 계십니다 (시편 139:1-4, 7-12). 우리를 버려두거나 잊어버리지 않으시며 너무 바빠서 소홀히 하지도 않으십니다. 우리는 “흑암”이나 “밤”과 같이 어렵고 힘든 상황에서도(11-12절) 주님에게서 숨겨져 있지 않습니다. 이 진리는 우리에게 소망과 확신이 되어 우리를 기묘하게 창조하시고 사는 날 동안 우리를 인도하시는 주님을 찬양하게 합니다(14절).

He Knows Us

Did God know about me as I drove at night on a 100-mile journey to my village? Given the condition I was in, the answer was not simple. My temperature ran high and my head ached. I prayed, “Lord, I know you are with me, but I’m in pain!”

Tired and weak, I parked by the road near a small village. Ten minutes later, I heard a voice. “Hello! Do you need any help?” It was a man with his companions from the community. Their presence felt good. When they told me the name of their village, Naa mi n’yala (meaning, “The King knows about me!”), I was amazed. I had passed this community dozens of times without stopping. This time, the Lord used its name to remind me that, indeed, He, the King, was with me while I was alone on that road in my ailing condition. Encouraged, I pressed on toward the nearest clinic.

God knows us thoroughly as we go about our everyday chores, at different locations and situations, no matter our condition (Psalm 139:1–4, 7–12). He does not abandon us or forget us; nor is He so busy that He neglects us. Even when we are in trouble or in difficult circumstances—“darkness” and “night” (vv. 11–12)—we are not hidden from His presence. This truth gives us such hope and assurance that we can praise the Lord who has carefully created us and leads us through life (v. 14). - LAWRENCE DARMANI

두려울 때의 정신적 지주

당신은 걱정이 많은 사람입니까? 내가 그렇습니다. 나는 거의 매일 불안과 씨름합니다. 큰일들을 걱정하고 작은 일들을 걱정합니다. 때로는 모든 일을 걱정하는 것 같습니다. 내가 십대일 때 한 번은 부모님의 귀가가 네 시간 늦어져서 경찰에 전화하기도 했습니다.

성경은 우리에게 두려워하지 말라고 여러 번 말합니다. 하나님의 선하심과 능력 때문에, 그리고 하나님이 예수님을 보내셔서 우리를 위해 죽으시고 성령님을 보내셔서 우리를 인도하시기에, 두려움이 우리의 삶을 주장하게 해서는 안됩니다. 어려운 일에 부딪혀도 하나님이 우리와 항상 함께 하시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.

두려운 순간마다 나에게 큰 힘이 되어주었던 말씀이 이사야 51:12-16입니다. 이 말씀에서 하나님은 엄청난 고통을 경험한 그의 백성들에게 하나님이 여전히 그들과 함께 하시며 궁극적으로 그분의 위로가 함께 할 것이라고 상기시켜주셨습니다. 아무리 나쁜 일이 있을지라도 “너희를 위로하는 자는 나 곧 나이니라”(12절)라고 이사야 선지자를 통해 말씀하셨습니다.

나는 그 약속을 정말 좋아합니다. 위의 12절 말씀은 내 영혼을 진정시키는 정신적 지주가 되었습니다. 삶이 너무 힘들거나 “끊임없는 두려움”(13절)에 눌려 있다고 느껴질 때 나는 반복해서 이 약속의 말씀을 붙잡았습니다. 이 말씀을 통해 하나님은 두려움으로부터 나의 시선을 돌려 “하늘을 펴고”(13절) 우리에게 위로를 약속하신 그분을 바라보고 믿고 의지하라고 깨우쳐주십니다.

하나님의 안위하심은 우리의 두려움보다 훨씬 크다.

An Anchor When We’re Afraid

Are you a worrier? I am. I wrestle with anxiety almost daily. I worry about big things. I worry about small things. Sometimes, it seems like I worry about everything. Once in my teens, I called the police when my parents were four hours late getting home.

Scripture repeatedly tells us not to be afraid. Because of God’s goodness and power, and because He sent Jesus to die for us and His Holy Spirit to guide us, our fears don’t have to rule our lives. We may well face hard things, but God has promised to be with us through it all.

One passage that has helped me profoundly in fearful moments is Isaiah 51:12–16. Here, God reminded His people, who had endured tremendous suffering, that He was still with them, and that His comforting presence is the ultimate reality. No matter how bad things may seem: “I, even I, am he who comforts you,” He told them through the prophet Isaiah (v. 12).

I love that promise. Those eight words have been an emotion-steadying anchor for my soul. I’ve clung to this promise repeatedly when life has felt overwhelming, when my own “constant terror” (v. 13) has felt oppressive. Through this passage, God reminds me to lift my eyes from my fears and in faith and dependence to look to the One who “stretches out the heavens” (v. 13)—the One who promises to comfort us. - ADAM HOLZ

이방인을 환대하는 이방인

남편과 나는 시누이와 가까운 곳에 살려고 시애틀로 이사했는데, 어디서 집을 구하고 직장을 구해야 할지 몰랐습니다. 한
지역교회가 우리를 도와주어 세를 줄 수 있도록 방이 여러 개 있는 집을 구할 수 있었습니다. 우리가 방 하나를 쓰고 나머지
방들은 유학생들에게 세를 주었습니다. 그 후 삼 년 동안 우리는 이방인을 맞이하는 이방인이 되어 우리 집과 음식을 전 세계에서 온 사람들과 나누게 되었습니다. 또한 우리와 우리 집에 사는 사람들은 수십 명의 유학생들을 매주 금요일 우리 집에서 있는 성경공부로 인도하였습니다.

하나님의 사람들은 집을 멀리 떠나있는 것이 어떤 것인지 잘 압니다. 수백 년 동안 이스라엘 백성들은 이집트에서 그야말로
이방인이요 노예였습니다. 레위기 19장에 “너의 부모를 공경하라” “도적질하지 말라” (3,11절)와 같은 익숙한 말씀들과 함께, 이스라엘 백성들은 나그네로 사는 것이 어떤 것인지, 또 얼마나 두려운 일인지를 잘 알기에 하나님은 그의 백성들에게 이방인의 마음을 이해하며 잘 보살피라고 말씀하셨습니다(33-34절).

오늘날 하나님을 따르는 우리 모두가 이처럼 문자 그대로의 유배생활을 한 경험은 없더라도, 우리는 궁극적으로 천국에 속한 사람들이기 때문에 이 땅에서 “이방인”으로 사는 것이 어떤 것인지를 잘 압니다(베드로전서 2:11). 우리는 이방인이 이방인을 하나님의 가족으로 환대하는 따스한 공동체를 이루라는 부름을 받았습니다. 남편과 나는 시애틀에서 받은 따스한 환대로 같은 대접을 다른 사람들에게 베푸는 것을 배웠습니다. 이것이 하나님의 가족의 핵심입니다(로마서 12:13).

Strangers Welcome Strangers

When my husband and I moved to Seattle to be near his sister, we didn’t know where we would live or work. A local church helped us find a place: a rental house with many bedrooms. We could live in one bedroom, and rent the others to international students. For the next three years, we were strangers welcoming strangers: sharing our home and meals with people from all over the world. We and our housemates also welcomed dozens of international students into our home every Friday night for Bible study.

God’s people know what it means to be far from home. For several hundred years, the Israelites were literal foreigners—and slaves—in Egypt. In Leviticus 19, alongside familiar instructions like “Respect your mother and father” and “Do not steal” (vv. 3, 11), God reminded His people to empathetically care for foreigners, because they knew what it was like to be foreigners and afraid (vv. 33–34).

While not all of us as followers of God today have experienced literal exile, we all know how it feels to be “foreigners” on earth (1 Peter 2:11)—people who feel like outsiders because our ultimate allegiance is to a heavenly kingdom. We are called to create a community of hospitality—strangers welcoming strangers into God’s family. The hospitable welcome my husband and I experienced in Seattle taught us to extend welcome to others—and this is at the heart of being the family of God (Romans 12:13). - AMY PETERSON

오묘하신 하나님

해양생물학자 워드 에펠탄스는 “심해에 들어가서 표본을 채취해보면 매번 새로운 종의 생물을 발견할 수 있다.”고 합니다. 최근 한 해 동안 과학자들은 1,451가지 새로운 유형의 해양생물을 찾아냈습니다. 우리는 아직도 바다 속에 있는 것의 절반도 알지 못하고 있습니다.

욥기 38-40장에서 하나님은 욥을 위해 하나님의 창조물을 이야기하셨습니다. 시적으로 기록된 이 세 장에서 하나님은 날씨의 경이로움과 우주의 광대함과 여러 서식지에 사는 각종 피조물에 대한 이야기를 가지고 말씀하셨습니다. 이런 것은 우리가 관찰할 수 있는 것들입니다. 그런데 하나님은 다음 장 전체를 통해 신비로운 리워야단에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 리워야단은 다른 것과는 완전히 다른 동물로, 창의 공격에도 끄떡없는 겉가죽(욥기 41:7,13), 늠름한 체구(12절), “심히 두려운 이빨”(14절)을 갖고 있습니다. “입에서는 횃불이 나오고......콧구멍에서는 연기가 나옵니다”(19-20절). “세상에는 그것과 비할 것이 없다”(33절)고 하였습니다.

이같이 하나님은 우리가 본 적도 없는 거대한 피조물에 대해 말씀하십니다. 그런데 이것이 욥기 41장의 핵심일까요?

그렇지 않습니다! 욥기 41장은 하나님의 놀라우신 면모에 대해 우리 생각의 폭을 넓혀줍니다. 시편 기자는 이것을 다음과 같이 이어갑니다. “거기에는 크고 넓은 바다가 있고......그곳에는 주께서 지으신 리워야단이 그 속에서 노니이다”(시편 104:25-26). 욥기에 보면, 세상에서 가장 무서운 이 피조물에 대한 무시무시한 표현이 있은 뒤에 하나님께서 이것이 편히 놀 수 있는 공간 또한 만드셨음을 알게 됩니다. 리워야단이 ‘즐겁게 뛰논다’고 하였습니다.

우리가 현재에는 바다를 탐구하지만, 훗날에는 장엄하고도 신비롭고 재미있으신 하나님의 경이로움을 영원히 탐구하게 될
것입니다.

God of the Depths

“When you go to the deep sea, every time you take a sample, you’ll find a new species,” says marine biologist Ward Appeltans. In one recent year, scientists identified 1,451 new types of undersea life. We simply don’t know the half of what’s down there.

In Job 38–40, God reviewed His creation for Job’s benefit. In three poetic chapters, God highlighted the wonders of weather, the vastness of the cosmos, and the variety of creatures in their habitats. These are things we can observe. Then God spoke of the mysterious Leviathan—for an entire chapter. Leviathan is a creature like no other, with harpoon-deflecting armor (Job 41:7, 13), graceful power (v. 12), and “fearsome teeth” (v. 14). “Flames stream from its mouth . . . smoke pours from its nostrils” (vv. 19–20). “Nothing on earth is its equal” (v. 33).

Okay, so God talks about a huge creature we haven’t seen. Is that the point of Job 41?

No! Job 41 broadens our understanding of God’s surprising character. The psalmist expanded on this when he wrote, “There is the sea, vast and spacious, . . . and Leviathan, which you formed to frolic there” (Psalm 104:25–26). After the terrifying description in Job, we learn that God created a playpen for this most fearsome of all creatures. Leviathan frolics.

We have the present to explore the ocean. We’ll have eternity to explore the wonders of our magnificent, mysterious, playful God. - TIM GUSTAFSON

내 영혼아 잠잠하라!

사랑스럽게 아이를 보며 코와 입술에 손가락을 살며시 대고 부드러운 소리로 “쉬”, “쉬이” 하는 부모의 모습을 그려보십시오. 이런 표정과 짧은 몇 마디에 짜증내고 불편해하고 아파하던 아이가 보채지 않고 안정을 찾아 조용해집니다. 이 모습은 세계 어디서나 옛날부터 통해온 것이고, 우리 대부분은 이런 사랑의 표현을 지금까지 주고받아 왔습니다. 시편 131편 2절을 묵상할 때 나는 바로 이 모습이 떠오릅니다.

이 시편의 문장과 흐름을 보면 저자인 다윗이 심각한 고뇌 가운데 있었음을 알 수 있습니다. 당신도 실망이나 패배나 실패로 인해 고뇌에 찬 기도를 드려본 적이 있습니까? 삶의 어려움으로 자신이 초라해질 때 당신은 어떻게 합니까? 시험에 떨어지거나, 직장을 잃거나, 사람과의 관계가 끊어지면 어떻게 합니까? 다윗은 주님 앞에 마음을 쏟아놓으면서 솔직하게 자신의 영혼을 살피고 돌아보았습니다 (시편 131:1). 자신이 처한 환경에서 평안을 구하던 그는 마치 엄마 품속에 있는 것만으로 만족해하는 한 어린아이와 같은 기쁨을 찾았습니다(2절).

삶의 환경이 바뀌어 때로 우리는 비천해지기도 합니다. 그러나 우리를 결코 떠나지도 버리지도 않겠다고 약속하신 분이 계심을 알 때에 우리에게는 희망과 만족이 있습니다. 우리는 주님을 온전히 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

Be Still, My Soul!

Picture a parent poised lovingly over a child, finger gently placed in front of nose and lips softly speaking the words—“hush,” “shhhh.” The demeanor and simple words are meant to comfort and quiet anxious little ones in the midst of disappointment, discomfort, or pain. Scenes like this are universal and timeless and most of us have been on the giving or receiving end of such loving expressions. When I ponder Psalm 131:2, this is the picture that comes to mind.

The language and flow of this psalm suggest that the writer, David, had experienced something that provoked serious reflection. Have you experienced a disappointment, defeat, or failure that prompted thoughtful, reflective prayer? What do you do when you are humbled by life’s circumstances? When you fail a test or lose a job or experience the end of a relationship? David poured out his heart to the Lord and in the process did a bit of honest soul-searching and inventory (Psalm 131:1). In making peace with his circumstances, he found contentment like that of a young child who was satisfied with simply being with his or her mother (v. 2).

Life’s circumstances change and sometimes we are humbled. Yet we can be hopeful and content knowing that there is One who has promised to never leave or forsake us. We can trust Him fully. - ARTHUR JACKSON

다양한 은사, 한 가지 목적

강냉이라고도 불리는 옥수수는 나의 고향 멕시코의 주식인데 매우 다양한 종류가 있습니다. 노란색, 갈색, 붉은색, 검은색
옥수수들이 있고, 심지어는 멋진 점박이 옥수수도 있습니다. 그런데 도시 사람들의 대부분은 점박이 옥수수를 먹지 않습니다. 식당 경영자이며 연구가인 아마도 라미레즈는 그 이유를 사람들이 좋은 품질의 상품은 균일해야 한다고 생각하기 때문이라고 설명합니다. 그러나 점박이 옥수수는 맛이 좋으며 토르티야를 만드는 훌륭한 재료가 됩니다.

그 리 스 도 의 교 회 는 단 색 의 옥수수보다는 점박이 옥수수에 훨씬 더 가깝습니다. 바울 사도는 교회를 설명하기 위 해 사 람 의 모 습 을 사용했습니다. 왜냐하면 우리 모두는 한 몸을 이루며 같은 하나님을 섬기지만, 각자 다른 은사를 갖고 있기 때문입니다. 바울은 “직분은 여러 가지나 주는 같으며 또 사역은 여러 가지나 모든 것을 모든 사람 가운데서 이루시는 하나님은 같으니” (고린도전서 12:5-6) 라고 말했습니다. 우리가 다양한 방법으로 서로를 돕는 것은 하나님의 넓은 관용과 창조성을 보여주는 것입니다.

우리는 다양성을 살리면서 동시에 믿음과 목적에서는 하나가 되기 위해 애써야 합니다. 우리는 능력과 배경이 다르고, 언어와 국적도 다른 것이 사실입니다. 그러나 우리가 함께 섬기는 하나님은 또한 이 모든 다양함을 기뻐하시는 창조주이십니다.

Many Gifts, One Purpose

Corn, also called maize, is the staple food in my home country of Mexico. There are so many different types. You can find yellow, brown, red, and black cobs, even ones with a wonderful spotted pattern. But people in the cities usually won’t eat the spotted cobs. Restaurateur and researcher Amado Ramírez explains that they believe uniformity is a synonym of quality. Yet the spotted cobs taste good, and they make excellent tortillas.

The church of Christ is much more similar to a spotted ear of corn than to a cob of just one color. The apostle Paul used the imagery of a body to describe the church, because even though we are all one body, and we have the same God, each of us has been given a different gift. As Paul said, “There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work” (1 Corinthians 12:5–6). Our diversity in the ways we help each other shows God’s generosity and creativity.

As we embrace our diversity, may we also make every effort to keep our unity in faith and purpose. Yes, we have different abilities and backgrounds. We speak different languages and come from different countries. But we have the same wonderful God, the Creator who delights in so much variety. - KEILA OCHOA

의지한다고 선언함

로라의 어머니는 암과 투병 중이었습니다. 어느 날 아침 로라는 친구와 함께 엄마를 위해 기도했습니다. 여러 해 뇌성마비
장애를 겪고 있는 친구는 이렇게 기도했습니다. “저를 위해 모든 것을 해주시는 주님, 로라의 엄마를 위해서도 모든 것을 행하여 주소서.”

로라는 친구가 하나님을 “의지하는 것을 선언”하는 것에 깊은 감동을 받았습니다. 로라는 이 일을 떠올리며 말했습니다. “나는 모든 일에 하나님이 필요하다는 것을 얼마나 자주 인정하고 있나? 이것이 정말 내가 매일 해야 할 일이구나!”

예수님은 이 땅에 계시는 동안 언제나 하늘에 계신 아버지를 의지하는 모습을 보여주셨습니다. 어떤 사람은 예수님이 사람의 몸을 입으신 하나님이시므로 얼마든지 스스로 완전한 존재가 될 수 있으리라 생각할지 모릅니다. 그러나 안식일에 병자를 고치신 일로 종교지도자들이 예수님께 왜 법적으로 정해진 안식일에 “일”을 하느냐고 물었을 때 예수님은 “내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 아들이 아버지께서 하시는 일을 보지 않고는 아무것도 스스로 할 수 없나니”(요한복음 5:19)라고
대답하셨습니다. 예수님도 하나님을 의지한다고 선언하신 것입니다!

예수님이 하나님 아버지께 의지하시는 모습은 하나님과의 관계 속에서 사는 것이 어떤 모습인지를 보여주는 대표적인 예입니다. 우리가 숨 쉬는 모든 순간이 하나님이 주시는 선물이며, 하나님은 우리의 삶이 그의 능력으로 가득 차기를 원하십니다. 매 순간 기도와 그의 말씀에 의지함으로 하나님을 사랑하고 섬기며 살 때, 우리는 하나님을 의지한다고 선언하는 것이 됩니다.

Declaring Dependence

Laura’s mom was battling cancer. One morning Laura prayed for her with a friend. Her friend, who had been disabled for years by cerebral palsy, prayed: “Lord, you do everything for me. Please do everything for Laura’s mother.”

Laura was deeply moved by her friend’s “declaration of dependence” on God. Reflecting on the moment, she said, “How often do I acknowledge my need for God in everything? It’s something I should do every day!”

During His days on earth Jesus demonstrated continual dependence on His heavenly Father. One might think that because Jesus is God in a human body, He would have the best of all reasons to be self-sufficient. But when the religious authorities asked Him to give a reason for “working” on a legally ordained day of rest because He healed someone on the Sabbath, He responded, “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing” (John 5:19). Jesus declared His dependence as well!

Jesus’s reliance on the Father sets the ultimate example of what it means to live in relationship with God. Every moment we draw breath is a gift from God, and He wants our lives to be filled with His strength. When we live to love and serve Him through our moment-by-moment prayer and reliance on His Word, we are declaring our dependence on Him. - JAMES BANKS

숨겨진 아름다움

물속에 들어갔다 나온 아이들은 황홀해서 외쳤습니다. “가지가지 물고기가 엄청 많아요! 너무 아름다워요! 이렇게 예쁜 색깔의 물고기는 처음 봐요!”

그 해수면은 겉보기에는 우리 집 근처에 있는 호수와 비슷했기 때문에 아이들은 그 수면아래 숨겨진 아름다움을 알아채지
못했을 것입니다.

사무엘 선지자는 이새의 아들 중 하나를 다음 왕으로 기름 붓기 위해 베들레헴으로 갔을 때 맏아들 엘리압을 보고 그 외모에 마음을 빼앗겼습니다. 사무엘은 적임자를 찾았다고 생각했지만 주님은 엘리압이 아니라고 하셨습니다. 하나님은 사무엘에게 “내가 보는 것은 사람과 같지 아니하니 사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 보느니라” (사무엘상 16:7)라고 일깨워주셨습니다.

사무엘은 이새에게 다른 아들들이 더 있는지 물었습니다. 그때 막내아들은 가족의 양을 돌보느라 그 자리에 없었습니다. 그 아들 다윗을 집으로 불러오자 주님은 그에게 기름을 부으라고 사무엘에게 명하셨습니다.

우리는 종종 사람들을 겉모습만 보고 숨겨진 내면의 아름다움을 볼 여유를 갖지 못합니다. 우리는 하나님께서 중요하게 생각하시는 것을 소홀히 여길 때가 있습니다. 그러나 시간을 들여 수면 아래를 들여다볼 때 위대한 보물을 발견할 수도 있습니다.

Hidden Beauty

Our children needed a little coaxing to believe that it was worth putting on snorkeling gear to peer beneath the surface of the Caribbean Sea off the shore of the island of Tobago. But after they dove in, they resurfaced ecstatic, “There are thousands of fish of all different kinds! It’s so beautiful! I’ve never seen such colorful fish!”

Because the surface of the water looked similar to freshwater lakes near our home, our children could have missed the beauty hidden just below the surface.

When the prophet Samuel went to Bethlehem to anoint one of Jesse’s sons to be the next king, Samuel saw the oldest son, Eliab, and was impressed by his appearance. The prophet thought he had found the right man, but the Lord rejected Eliab. God reminded Samuel that He “does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

So Samuel asked if there were more sons. The youngest boy wasn’t present but caring for the family’s sheep. This son, David, was summoned and the Lord directed Samuel to anoint him.

Often we look at people only on a surface level and don’t always take the time to see their inner, sometimes hidden, beauty. We don’t always value what God values. But if we take the time to peer beneath the surface, we may find great treasure. - LISA SAMRA

Heavenly Father, thank You for not valuing people based on outward appearances but instead by looking at our hearts. Help me to take the time to see beyond simply what my eyes can see in order to discover true and lasting beauty.

하나님의 위대한 창조

얼마 전 손주들과 지내면서 웹 카메라를 통해 플로리다의 독수리 가족을 흥미롭게 지켜보았습니다. 땅에서 매우 높은 곳에 둥지를 틀고 일상을 보내는 엄마, 아빠독수리와 아기를 우리는 매일 지켜보았습니다. 날마다 엄마, 아빠독수리는 근처의 강에서 물고기를 먹이로 잡아오기도 하면서 새끼독수리를 끊임없이 지켜보며 보살폈습니다.

이 작은 독수리 가족은 시편 104편에 기록된 하나님의 위대한 창조의 한 모습 입니다. 이 시편에는 하나님께서 창조의
손으로 만드신 다양한 이미지와 장면들이 있습니다.

우주를 통해 하나님의 장엄한 창조의 모습을 봅니다(2-4절).

물과 산과 골짜기와 같이, 창조된 이 땅을 직접 경험합니다(5-9절). 하나님께서 선물로 주신 동물과 새와 곡식으로 영광을 누립니다 (10-18절).

낮과 밤, 어둠과 빛, 일과 휴식처럼 하나님이 이 세상에 창조하신 주기에 경이함을 느낍니다(19-23절).

하나님께서 우리의 기쁨을 위해, 또 그분의 영광을 위해 자신의 손으로 지으신 이 세상이 얼마나 영화로운지요! “내 영혼아 여호와를 송축하라!”(1절). 우리에게 음미하고 즐기라고 하나님이 주신 모든 것들로 인해 우리 모두는 하나님께 감사의 고백을 드릴 수 있습니다.

God’s Great Creation

On a recent visit with some of our grandchildren, we enjoyed watching a web cam that focused on an eagle family in Florida. Every day we would check in on the mom, the dad, and the baby as they went about their daily routine in their nest high off the ground. Each day the parent birds would keep a constant, protective vigil over the eaglet, bringing it fish from a nearby river for nourishment.

This little eagle family depicts for us one image the psalmist gave us of God’s magnificent creation in Psalm 104—an array of creation images, of scenes from the work of God’s creative hand.

We see the majesty of God’s creation as it relates to the universe (vv. 2–4).

We experience the creation of the earth itself—waters, mountains, valleys (vv. 5–9).

We enjoy the glory of God’s gift of animals, birds, and crops (vv. 10–18).

We marvel at the cycles God created in our world—morning/night, darkness/light, work/rest (vv. 19–23).

What a glorious world God has fashioned with His hands for our enjoyment—and for His glory! “Praise the Lord, my soul!” (v. 1). Each one of us can say thank You to God for all He has given us to appreciate and enjoy. - DAVE BRANON
