오래 가는 행복

행복은 자기 방식대로 사는데서 온다고 하는 말을 종종 듣습니다. 그러나 이 말은 사실이 아닙니다. 그런 생각은 다만 공허와 염려와 마음의 고통에 이르게 할 뿐입니다.

W. H. 오든이라는 시인은 쾌락에서 도피처를 찾는 사람들을 관찰하였는데, 그들은 “귀신 나오는 숲에서 길 잃은 사람들 / 밤을 무서워하는 아이들 / 행복하거나 좋았던 기억이 없는 사람들”이라고 하였습니다.

시편 기자 다윗은 우리의 두려움과 불행을 치유하는 노래를 합니다. “내가 여호와께 간구하매 내게 응답하시고 내 모든 두려움에서 나를 건지셨도다”(시편 34:4). 행복이란 하나님의 방법대로 하는 것이고 이것은 매일 매일 증명되는 사실입니다. 다윗도 “그들이 주를 앙망하고 광채를 내었으니”(5절)라고 기록합니다. 이것은 해보면 알게 됩니다. 그래서 다윗이 “너희는 여호와의 선하심을 맛보아 알지어다”(8절)라고 한 것입니다.

우리는 “보면 믿게 된다.”라고 말합니다. 그것이 우리가 이 세상에서 사물을 알아가는 방식입니다. 증거를 보여주면 믿겠다는 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 ‘믿으면 보게 된다.’라고 다르게 표현하십니다. “맛보아라 그러면 알게 될 것이다.”

주님의 말씀을 그대로 믿으십시오. 주님이 하라고 하시는 바로 그 일을 하면 알게 될 것입니다. 주님은 은혜를 주셔서 올바른 일과 그 이상의 일을 하게 하실 것입니다. 그리고 유일한 선의 근원이신 주님 자신을 주셔서 그 선과 함께 영원한 행복을 주실 것입니다.

옳은 일을 하는 것이 행복이다.

An Enduring Happiness

Often we hear that happiness comes from doing things our own way. That, however, is not true. That philosophy leads only to emptiness, anxiety, and heartache.

Poet W. H. Auden observed people as they attempted to find an escape in pleasures. He wrote of such people: “Lost in a haunted wood, / Children afraid of the night / Who have never been happy or good.”

The psalmist David sings of the remedy for our fears and unhappiness. “I sought the LORD , and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears” (PSALM 34:4). Happiness is doing things God’s way, a fact that can be verified every day. “Those who look to him are radiant,” writes David (V 5). Just try it and you’ll see. That’s what he means when he says, “Taste and see that the LORD is good” (V 8).

We say, “Seeing is believing.” That’s how we know things in this world. Show me proof and I’ll believe it. God puts it the other way around. Believing is seeing. “Taste and then you will see.”

Take the Lord at His word. Do the very next thing He is asking you to do and you will see. He will give you grace to do the right thing and more: He will give you Himself—the only source of goodness—and with it, enduring happiness.

하나님의 돌보심

나의 어린 손자들은 혼자 옷 입는 것을 좋아합니다. 셔츠를 거꾸로 입을 때가 있는가 하면 더 어린 손자는 신발을 오른쪽 왼쪽 바꾸어 신기도 합니다. 대체로 나는 아이들에게 이래라 저래라 할 생각이 없습니다. 오히려 아이들의 순진한 모습들이 사랑스럽기만 합니다.

나는 손자들의 눈을 통해 세상을 보기를 아주 좋아합니다. 아이들에게는 모든 것이 모험입니다. 넘어져 있는 나무 위를 끝까지 걸어가 보거나, 통나무 위에서 거북이가 햇볕을 쬐고 있는 것을 숨어서 바라보거나, 요란한 소리를 내며 지나가는 소방차를 신이 나서 바라보는 것들 말입니다. 그러나 나는 어린 손자들도 완전히 순진하지는 않다는 것을 압니다. 아이들은 왜 밤에 침대에 가만히 있지 못하는지에 대해 열 개도 넘는 변명을 지어낼 수 있고, 자기가 갖고 싶은 장난감을 망설이지도 않고 다른 아이에게서 빼앗기도 합니다. 그래도 나는 이 아이들을 너무나 사랑합니다.

나는 하나님이 지으신 첫 사람 아담과 하와도 어떤 면에서 나의 손주들과 비슷하다는 생각을 해봅니다. 그들이 하나님과 같이 동산을 거닐면서 본 것들은 분명 모두 다 경이로웠을 것입니다. 그러나 어느 날 자기들 마음대로 하나님께 불순종하여 먹지 말라고 한 나무의 과일을 먹었습니다(창세기 2:15-17; 3:6). 그리고 그 불순종은 곧 거짓말과 책임전가로 이어졌습니다(3:8-13).

그래도 하나님은 그들을 사랑으로 돌보셨습니다. 하나님은 동물들을 잡아 그들에게 옷을 만들어 입히시고(21절), 나중에는 자기 아들을 희생하여 모든 죄인에게 구원의 길을 마련해주셨습니다 (요한복음 3:16). 하나님은 그만큼 우리를 사랑하십니다!

God’s Care for Us

My young grandsons enjoy dressing themselves. Sometimes they pull their shirts on backwards and often the younger one puts his shoes on the wrong feet. I usually don’t have the heart to tell them; besides, I find their innocence endearing.

I love seeing the world through their eyes. To them, everything is an adventure, whether walking the length of a fallen tree, spying a turtle sunning itself on a log, or excitedly watching a fire truck roar by. But I know that even my little grandsons are not truly innocent. They can make up a dozen excuses about why they can’t stay in their beds at night and are quick to yank a wanted toy from the other. Yet I love them dearly.

I picture Adam and Eve, God’s first people, as being in some ways like my grandchildren. Everything they saw in the garden must have been a marvel as they walked with God. But one day they willfully disobeyed. They ate of the one tree they were forbidden to eat (GENESIS 2:15–17; 3:6). And that disobedience immediately led to lies and blame-shifting (3:8–13).

Still, God loved and cared for them. He sacrificed animals in order to clothe them (V 21)—and later He provided a way of salvation for all sinners through the sacrifice of His Son (JOHN 3:16). He loves us that much!

본향으로 향하게 하는 기도

어렸을 때 내가 처음으로 배운 기도 중 하나는 “저 이제 자려고 누웠습니다. 주님께서 제 영혼을 지켜주시길 기도합니다......”라는 것이었습니다. 이 기도는 부모님에게서 배운 것인데 다시 내 어린 아들 딸에게도 가르쳐주었습니다. 어렸을 때 나는 잠들기 전에 그 기도와 함께 나를 하나님 손에 맡기면서 큰 평안을 얻었습니다.

이와 비슷한 기도가 성경의 “기도의 책”이라 불리는 시편 곳곳에 있습니다. 어떤 성경학자들은 “내가 나의 영을 주의 손에 부탁하나이다”(시편 31:5)라는 구절은 예수님 당시 어린아이들에게 가르쳤던 “잠자리” 기도였을 것이라고 합니다.

이 기도는 예수님이 십자가에서 하신 마지막 외침이기도 합니다. 그러나 예수님은 그 기도에 “아버지여”라는 말을 하나 더 덧붙이셨습니다(누가복음 23:46). 예수님은 돌아가시기 직전에 그런 기도를 드림으로써 하나님 아버지와의 친밀한 관계를 보이셨고, 믿는 사람들에게 주님과 함께 있을 그들의 본향을 바라보게 하셨습니다 (요한복음 14:3).

예수님이 십자가에서 죽으심으로 우리는 하늘에 계신 아버지 하나님과의 놀라운 관계 속에 살아갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 우리를 위해 희생하신 예수님의 사랑 때문에 우리가 하나님의 자녀로 그분의 보살핌 아래 편히 쉴 수 있다는 것을 알 때 큰 위로가 됩니다! 우리 하나님 아버지께서 우리를 지켜보시고 우리를 깨워 주님과 함께 살게 하겠다고 약속하셨기 때문에 우리는 이제 아무 두려움 없이 눈을 감을 수 있습니다(데살로니가전서 4:14).

A Prayer to Point Us Home

One of the first prayers I learned as a little boy was “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep . . .” It was a prayer I learned from my parents, and I taught it to my son and daughter when they were little. As a child, I found great comfort in placing myself in God’s hands with those words before I fell asleep.

There’s a similar prayer neatly tucked away in the “prayer book” of the Bible, the Psalms. Some biblical scholars suggest that the phrase “Into your hands I commit my spirit” (PSALM 31:5) was a “bedtime” prayer taught to children in Jesus’s day.

You may recognize that prayer as Jesus’s final cry from the cross. But Jesus added one more word to it: Father (LUKE 23:46). By praying that word in the moments before His death, Jesus demonstrated His intimate relationship with the Father and pointed believers toward their home with Him (JOHN 14:3).

Jesus died on the cross so we could live in the wonder of a relationship with God as our heavenly Father. How comforting it is to know that because of Jesus’s sacrificial love for us, we can rest in God’s care as His children! We can close our eyes without fear because our Father watches over us and has promised to wake us up to life with Him (1 THESSALONIANS 4:14).

진행 중 아니면 완료?

일을 잘 끝내고나면 만족감이 생깁니다. 예를 들어 내가 매달 하는 일 가운데 하나쯤은 한 단계 발전하여 “진행 중”에서 “완료”로 바뀌는데 “완료” 버튼을 누를 때에는 기분이 참 좋습니다. 그런데 지난 달 그 “완료” 버튼을 누르며 이런 생각을 했습니다. ‘내 믿음 생활에서도 힘든 부분을 이렇게 쉽게 이겨낼 수 있으면 얼마나 좋을까! 그리스도인의 삶은 완료가 없고 언제나 진행 중인 것 같군.’

그때 히브리서 10장 14절 말씀이 떠올랐습니다. 이 구절은 그리스도의 희생이 어떻게 우리를 온전히 구원하시는가를 설명합니다. 거기엔 우리를 위해 그 “완료 버튼”이 눌러졌다는 중요한 의미가 담겨있습니다. 예수님의 죽음은 우리 힘으로 할 수 없는 것을 우리에게 이루어주었습니다. 예수님은 그를 믿는 사람들을 하나님 앞에 합당한 존재가 되게 하셨습니다. 다 이루었다 하신 예수님 말씀 그대로입니다(요한복음 19:30). 그러나 역설적인 것은 예수님의 완전하고 전적인 희생이 있었음에도 우리는 히브리서 저자의 말처럼 실제로 “거룩하게 되는” 영적 과정을 남은 일생 동안 살아내야 합니다.

예수님이 다 이루신 것이 우리의 삶 속에서 아직도 이루어져가고 있다는 사실은 이해하기 어렵습니다. 이 세상에서 그렇게 살아가는 것은 아직 “진행 중”이긴 하지만, 영적으로 힘들 때에 나와 모두를 위해 예수님의 희생이 “완료”되었다는 것을 생각하면 힘이 됩니다. 우리를 예수님 닮는데 까지 변화시키시려는 그분의 최종 목적은 어떠한 어려움이 있어도 이루어질 것입니다(고린도후서 3:18 참조).

In Progress or Completed?

It’s satisfying to finish a job. Each month, for instance, one of my job responsibilities gets moved from one category to another, from “In Progress” to “Completed.” I love clicking that “Completed” button. But last month when I clicked it, I thought, If only I could overcome rough spots in my faith so easily! It can seem like the Christian life is always in progress, never completed.

Then I remembered Hebrews 10:14. It describes how Christ’s sacrifice redeems us totally. So in one important sense, that “completed button” has been pressed for us. Jesus’s death did for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves: He made us acceptable in God’s eyes when we place our faith in Him. It is finished, as Jesus Himself said (JOHN 19:30). Paradoxically, even though His sacrifice is complete and total, we spend the rest of our lives living into that spiritual reality—“being made holy,” as Hebrews' author writes.

The fact that Jesus has finished something that’s still being worked out in our lives is hard to understand. When I’m struggling spiritually, it’s encouraging to remember that Jesus’s sacrifice for me—and for you—is complete . . . even if our living it out in this life is still a work in progress . Nothing can stop His intended end from being achieved eventually: being transformed into His likeness (SEE 2 CORINTHIANS 3:18).

경이로운 창조주

나는 아마추어 사진작가로서 창조의 하나님의 면면을 카메라에 즐겨 담습니다. 섬세한 꽃잎들과 일출 일몰의 장관과 창공을 수놓는 구름과 총총히 빛나는 별들에서 나는 하나님의 손길을 봅니다.

또한 카메라의 강력한 확대 기능을 사용해서 주님이 창조하신 것들을 찍기도 합니다. 벚꽃나무에서 재잘거리는 다람쥐 들과 꽃들 사이를 날아다니는 형형색색의 나비들과 검은 바위가 널린 해변에서 햇볕을 쬐는 바다거북들의 스냅 사진을 찍습니다. 나는 이렇게 자기만의 독특한 모습들을 보면서 경이로운 창조주를 경배하게 됩니다.

하나님의 독특한 창조물들을 보고 감탄하며 찬양하는 하나님의 백성은 내가 처음이 아닙니다. 시편 104편의 기자는 자연 속에 있는 주님의 많은 예술품을 노래합니다(24절). 그는 “무수한 크고 작은 생명체들로 넘쳐나는 크고 넓은 바다”(25절)를 바라보면서 하나님이 자신의 걸작들을 항상 온전하게 돌보시는 것을 기뻐하고 있습니다 (27-31절). 그는 또 주위에 하나님이 주신 생명체들의 장엄함을 생각하면서 경배와 감사를 크게 노래합니다. “내가 평생토록 노래하며
내가 살아 있는 동안 내 하나님을 찬양하리로다”(33절).

참으로 아름답고 위대한 주님의 창조물을 자세히 보면 그분은 계획을 갖고 창조하시고 세밀한 것까지 관심을 기울이신 것을 보게 됩니다. 그래서 시편 기자처럼 우리도 창조주의 영원히 변함없는 권능과 장엄과 사랑에 감사와 찬송을 드리게 됩니다. 할렐루야!

Marvelous Maker

As an amateur photographer, I enjoy capturing glimpses of God’s creativity with my camera. I see His fingerprints on each delicate flower petal, each vibrant sunrise and sunset, and each cloud-painted and star-speckled sky canvas.

My camera’s powerful zoom option allows me to take photos of the Lord’s creatures too. I’ve snapped shots of a chattering squirrel in a cherry blossom tree, a colorful butterfly flitting from bloom to bloom, and sea turtles sunning on a rocky, black beach. Each one-of-a-kind image prompted me to worship my marvelous Maker.

I’m not the first of God’s people to praise Him while admiring His unique creations. The writer of Psalm 104 sings of the Lord’s many works of art in nature (V 24). He regards “the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number” (V 25) and rejoices in God for providing constant and complete care for His masterpieces (VV 27–31). Considering the majesty of the God-given life around him, the psalmist bursts
with worshipful gratitude: “I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live” (V 33).

While reflecting on the Lord’s magnificent and immense creation, we can look closely at His intentional creativity and attention to detail. And like the psalmist, we can sing to our Creator with thankful praise for how powerful, majestic, and loving He is and always will be. Hallelujah!

하늘 정원

런던에 있는 동안 한 친구가 나와 아내 말린을 위해 하늘 정원을 가 볼 수 있게 주선해주었습니다. 런던 상업 지역의 35층 건물 최상층에 위치한 하늘 정원은 유리로 덮은 플랫폼으로 식물과 나무와 꽃들로 가득했습니다. 그러나 정원보다는 하늘에서 보는 광경이 우리의 관심을 끌었습니다. 우리는 500피트(150미터)가 넘는 높이에서 성바오로 대성당과 런던 타워와 다른 곳들을 내려다보며 감탄했습니다. 우리가 살펴본 수도 런던은 놀라움 그 자체였습니다. 그리고 전체를 보아 아는데 도움이 되었습니다.

우리 하나님은 우리가 겪는 일들을 모두 완벽하게 보고 계십니다. 시편 기자는 “여호와께서 그의 높은 성소에서 굽어보시며 땅을 살펴보셨으니 이는 갇힌 자의 탄식을 들으시며 죽이기로 정한 자를 해방하사”(시편 102:19-20)라고 썼습니다.

시편 102편에 나오는 비참한 사람들처럼 우리도 절망 가운데 “신음하며” 괴로움을 안고 현재라는 시간에 갇혀 살 때가 많습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리의 삶을 처음부터 끝까지 다 보고 계십니다. 우리 주님은 우리처럼 갑자기 닥쳐오는 일에 무방비로 당하시는 일은 없습니다. 시편 기자가 내다본 것처럼 모든 것을 다 보고 계시는 하나님은 “죽음에 처한” 사람들까지도 자유롭게 하시는 온전한 구원으로 인도하실 것입니다 (20,27-28절).

힘들 때에는 기억하십시오. 우리는 앞날을 몰라도 주님은 아십니다. 우리 앞의 모든 순간에 주님을 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

Sky Garden

While in London, a friend arranged for my wife Marlene and me to visit the Sky Garden. On the top floor of a thirty-five-story building in London’s business district, the Sky Garden is a glass-encased platform filled with plants, trees, and flowers. But the sky part captured our attention. We gazed down from a height of over 500 feet, admiring St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, and more. Our views of the capital city were breathtaking—providing a helpful lesson on perspective.

Our God has a perfect perspective of everything we experience. The psalmist wrote, “For He looked down from His holy height; from heaven the LORD gazed upon the earth, to hear the groaning of the prisoner, to set free those who were doomed to death” (PSALM 102:19–20 NASB ).

Like the hurting people pictured in Psalm 102, we are often locked into the present with its struggles, “groaning” with despair. But God sees our lives from beginning to end. Our Lord is never caught off guard by the things that can blindside us. As the psalmist anticipated, His perfect perspective will lead to an ultimate rescue that sets free even those “doomed to death” (vv. 20, 27–28).

In difficult moments, remember: We may not know what is coming next, but our Lord does. We can trust Him with every moment that stretches before us.

예수님이 내미는 손

때로는 생활이 너무 바빠집니다. 수업은 어렵고, 일은 힘들고, 화장실 청소를 해야 하고, 커피 데이트도 하루 계획에 들어있습니다. 억지로라도 하루에 몇 분은 성경을 읽으려 했다가도 다음 주에는 하나님과 시간을 더 많이 보내야겠다고 다짐하기에 이릅니다. 그러나 얼마 안 되어 일에 파묻히다 보면 마음이 딴 데로 향하고 하나님께는 어떤 도움을 구하는 것도 다 잊어버립니다.

예수님을 향해 물 위를 걸어가던 베드로는 이내 바람과 파도로 인해 마음이 흐트러졌습니다. 나의 경우처럼 그도 가라앉기 시작했습니다(마태복음 14:29-30). 그러나 베드로가 소리치자 예수님은 즉시 손을 내밀어 그를 붙드셨습니다(30-31절).

나는 너무나 바쁘고 정신없이 지내느라 하나님을 잊어버렸다가 하나님께 아부라도 해야 되겠다고 느낄 때가 있습니다. 그러나 그것은 하나님의 방법이 아닙니다. 예수님을 향해 도움을 청하기만 하면 당장에 손을 내밀어주십니다.

삶이 복잡해져 불안정해지면 하나님이 폭풍 가운데서도 우리와 함께 서 계시다는 사실을 잊기가 쉽습니다. 예수님은 베드로에게 “왜 의심하였느냐”(31절)고 물으셨습니다. 우리가 지금 어떤 일을 겪고 있더라도 예수님이 거기 계십니다. 그리고 어디에나 계십니다. 그분은 어느 순간에라도 손을 내밀어 우리를 구하실 준비가 되어있습니다.

Jesus Reached Out

Sometimes life gets busy—classes are hard, work is exhausting, the bathroom needs to be cleaned, and a coffee date is on the day’s schedule. It gets to the point where I force myself to read the Bible for a few minutes a day and tell myself I’ll spend more time with God next week. But it doesn’t take long before I’m distracted, drowning in the day’s tasks, and forget to ask God for help of any kind.

When Peter was walking on water toward Jesus, he quickly became distracted by the wind and waves. Like me, he began to sink (MATTHEW 14:29–30). But as soon as Peter cried out, “immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him” (VV 30–31).

I often feel as if I have to make it up to God after being so busy and distracted that I lose sight of Him. But that’s not how God works. As soon as we turn to Him for help, Jesus reaches out without hesitation.

When we’re unsettled by the chaos of life, it’s easy to forget that God is standing in the middle of the storm with us. Jesus asked Peter, “Why did you doubt?” (V 31). No matter what we’re going through, He is there. He is here. Next to us at that moment, in this moment, ready to reach out and rescue us.

굶주린 마음

볼일이 있어서 남편과 함께 차를 타고 가면서 전화기로 이메일을 확인하고 있는데 화면에 그 지역 도넛 가게 광고가 뜨는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그 가게는 우리가 막 지나친 도로 오른편에 있던 가게였기 때문입니다. 갑자기 배 속에서 시장하다고 꼬르륵하는 소리가 났습니다. 사업하는 사람들이 신기술을 이용하여 고객을 끌어들이는 방법이 놀라웠습니다.

나는 이메일을 닫으면서 나를 더 가까이 부르시는 하나님의 변함없는 간절한 마음을 생각해보았습니다. 하나님은 내가 어디에 있는지 항상 아시고 내가 무엇을 선택할 때에도 도와주기를 원하십니다. 나에게 이런 질문이 생겼습니다. ‘도넛 생각에 배에서 소리가 난 것처럼 내 마음속에서도 하나님에 갈급하여 그런 소리가 나는가?’

요한복음 6장에서 5천 명을 먹이신 기적을 본 제자들은 예수님에게 “세상에 생명을 주는 그 빵”을 자기들에게 ‘항상’ 달라고 간청합니다(33-34절). 예수님은 35절에서 이렇게 대답하십니다. “나는 생명의 떡이니 내게 오는 자는 결코 주리지 아니할 터이요 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 목마르지 아니하리라.” 예수님과의 관계로 우리가 매일의 생활에서 끊임없이 양식을 공급받을 수 있다는 것이 얼마나 놀라운 일인지 모릅니다!

도넛 가게의 광고는 내 몸의 욕구를 겨냥해 보낸 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 언제나 내 마음의 상태를 아시고, 나에게 하나님이 계속 필요하다는 사실을 깨닫게 하고 그분만이 주실 수 있는 양식을 얻게 하십니다.

Heart Hunger

Riding along with my husband on some errands, I scrolled through emails on my phone and was surprised at an incoming advertisement for a local donut shop, a shop we had just passed on the right side of the street. Suddenly my stomach growled with hunger. I marveled at how technology allows vendors to woo us into their establishments.

As I clicked off my email, I mused over God’s constant yearning to draw me closer. He always knows where I am and longs to influence my choices. I wondered, Does my heart growl in desire for Him the way my stomach did over the idea of a donut?

In John 6, following the miraculous feeding of the five thousand, the disciples eagerly ask Jesus to always give them “the bread that . . . gives life to the world” (VV 33–34). Jesus responds in verse 35, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” How amazing that a relationship with Jesus can provide constant nourishment in our everyday lives!

The donut shop’s advertisement targeted my body’s craving, but God’s continuous knowledge of my heart’s condition invites me to recognize my ongoing need for Him and to receive the sustenance only He can provide. ELISA MORGAN

주님께서 말씀하시니

우리는 세상에 고통이 존재하는 이유에 대한 수많은 논쟁을 욥기에서 볼 수 있습니다. 그러나 어떠한 논쟁도 욥에게는 그리 도움이 되지 않아 보입니다. 그의 고통은 의심 때문이 아니라 관계로 인한 사태입니다. 그것은 ‘욥이 하나님을 신뢰하는가?’ 하는 문제입니다. 욥은 무엇보다도 한 가지를 원합니다. 자기의 비참한 운명을 설명할 수 있는 그 한 사람의 나타남입니다. 그는 하나님을 직접 만나보기를 원합니다.

이윽고 욥이 바라던 것이 이루어집니다. 하나님이 직접 나타나신 것입니다(욥기 38:1 참조). 하나님은 완벽하게 역설적으로 욥의 친구 엘리후가 욥에게는 하나님이 나타나시기를 기대할 권리가 없다고 길게 설명하고 있는 그때를 택해 나타나셨습니다.

욥도 친구들도, 그 누구도 하나님이 하시는 말씀을 들을 준비가 되어있지 않았습니다. 욥은 질문하고 싶은 것이 많았지만 정작 질문을 한 것은 욥이 아니라 하나님이셨습니다. 하나님은 이렇게 시작하십니다. “너는 대장부처럼 허리를 묶고 내가 네게 묻는 것을 대답할지니라”(3절). 하나님은 앞에서 35개 장에 걸쳐 논쟁했던 고통의 문제는 무시해버리고 자연 세계의 경이로움을 주제로 장엄한 시의 세계를 펼치십니다.

하나님의 말씀은 모든 창조물의 하나님과 욥처럼 초라한 한 인간 사이의 커다란 차이를 잘 말해줍니다. ‘거기 누구 없나요?’라고 물었던 욥의 가장 큰 질문에 하나님이 등장하심은 아주 멋진 대답이 됩니다. 욥은 “나는 깨닫지도 못한 일을 말하였고 스스로 알 수도 없고 헤아리기도 어려운 일을 말하였나이다”(42:3)라고 대답할 수밖에 없었습니다.

The Lord Speaks

We can find nearly every argument in the book of Job about why there is pain in the world, but the arguing never seems to help Job much. His is a crisis of relationship more than a crisis of doubt. Can he trust God? Job wants one thing above all else: an appearance by the one Person who can explain his miserable fate. He wants to meet God Himself, face to face.

Eventually Job gets his wish. God shows up in person (SEE JOB 38:1). He times His entrance with perfect irony, just as Job’s friend Elihu is expounding on why Job has no right to expect a visit from God.

No one—not Job, nor any of his friends—is prepared for what God has to say. Job has saved up a long list of questions, but it is God, not Job, who asks the questions. “Brace yourself like a man,” He begins; “I will question you, and you shall answer me” (V 3). Brushing aside thirty-five chapters’ worth of debates on the problem of pain, God plunges into a majestic poem on the wonders of the natural world.

God’s speech defines the vast difference between the God of all creation and one puny man like Job. His presence spectacularly answers Job’s biggest question: Is anybody out there? Job can only respond, “Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know” (42:3).

급류타기

래프팅 가이드가 우리 일행을 강가로 인솔하여 구명조끼를 입고 노 잡는 것을 가르쳐주었습니다. 배에 오르자 가이드는 배 무게의 균형을 이루고 급류를 만났을 때 안정을 유지할 수 있게 좌석도 정해주었습니다. 그는 우리 앞에 펼쳐질 항해가 가져다줄 스릴을 강조한 후 급류에서 효과적으로 배를 조종하기 위해 잘 듣고 따라야 할 지시사항들을 자세히 알려주었습니다. 그리고 도중에 긴장된 순간도 있겠지만 매우 신나고도 안전한 여정이 될 것이라고 자신 있게 말했습니다.

우리의 삶은 때로 우리가 원하는 속도보다 더 빠른 물살을 타야하는 급류타기처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 최악의 상황이 일어나는 것이 두려울 때, 하나님께서 이사야 선지자를 통해 이스라엘에게 주신 약속이 우리의 두려운 마음을 다스리는 안내자가 될 수 있습니다. “네가 물 가운데로 지날 때에 내가 너와 함께 할 것이라 강을 건널 때에 물이 너를 침몰하지 못할 것이며” (이사야 43:2). 죄의 결과로 추방당하게 된 이스라엘 백성은 하나님으로부터 버림받았다는 감당키 어려운 두려움에 사로잡혔습니다. 그러나 대신에 하나님은 그들을 사랑하시기 때문에 그들과 함께 하시겠다고 확실하게 약속하십니다(2,4절).

하나님은 우리를 격랑에 내버려두지 않으십니다. 우리는 하나님이 우리의 깊은 두려움이나 고통스런 환난의 급류 속에서도 인도해주신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 우리도 사랑하셔서 함께 하시겠다고 약속하시기 때문입니다.

Riding the Rapids

The rafting guide escorted our group to the river’s edge and directed us all to put on life jackets and grab paddles. As we climbed into the boat, he assigned us seats to balance the boat’s weight, providing stability when we encountered rapids. After highlighting the thrills the watery voyage ahead would hold for us, he detailed a series of directions we could expect to hear—and would need to follow—to effectively steer the boat through the white water. He assured us that even though there might be tense moments on the way, our journey would be both exciting and safe.

Sometimes life feels like a white-water rafting trip, one that contains more rapids than we might like. God’s promise to Israel, through the prophet Isaiah, can guide our feelings when we fear the worst is happening: “When you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you” (ISAIAH 43:2). The Israelites faced an overwhelming fear of rejection by God as they went into exile as a consequence of their sin. Yet instead, He affirms them and promises to be with them because He loves them (vv. 2, 4).

God won’t abandon us in the rough waters. We can trust Him to guide us through the rapids—our deepest fears and most painful troubles—because He also loves us and promises to be with us.
