쓰레기 더미 속의 반지

대학 시절 어느 날 아침 눈을 떠 보니 룸메이트인 캐럴이 안절부절못하고 있었습니다. 자기 이름이 새겨진 반지를 잃어버린 것입니다. 우리는 사방을 다 뒤져보았습니다. 다음 날 아침에는 쓰레기 더미까지 뒤졌습니다.

나는 쓰레기봉투 하나를 찢어서 열어보았습니다. “이걸 찾으려고 그렇게 애썼던 거야!”

“2백 불짜리 반지를 잃어버릴 수는 없잖아!” 친구가 소리쳤습니다.

캐럴의 집념은 예수님이 말씀하신 천국의 비유를 떠오르게 했습니다. “천국은 마치 밭에 감추인 보화와 같으니 사람이 이를 발견한 후 숨겨 두고 기뻐하며 돌아가서 자기의 소유를 다 팔아 그 밭을 사느니라” (마태복음 13:44). 세상의 어떤 것들은 힘들여 찾을 만한 가치가 있습니다.

성경 어디서나 하나님은 그를 찾는 자들을 만나 주신다고 약속하십니다. 신명기에서 하나님은 이스라엘 백성들이 그들의 죄에서 돌이켜 전심으로 하나님을 찾으면 만날 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다(4:28-29). 역대하에서 아사 왕은 이와 비슷한 약속으로 용기를 얻었고(15:2), 예레미야서에서도 하나님은 유배된 자들에게 포로에서 풀려나 다시 돌아가게 하실 것이라고 같은 약속을 해주셨습니다(29:13-14).

우리가 하나님의 말씀과 예배, 그리고 매일의 삶 속에서 하나님을 찾는다면 하나님을 만날 것입니다. 그리고 시간이 지나면서 우리는 더 깊게 그분을 알게 될 것입니다. 그것은 캐럴이 쓰레기봉투에서 반지를 찾았을 때의 그 기쁨의 순간보다 훨씬 더 좋을 것입니다!

Ring in a Dumpster

In college, I woke up one morning to find Carol, my roommate, in a panic. Her signet ring was missing. We searched everywhere. The next morning we found ourselves picking through a dumpster.

I ripped open a trash bag. “You’re so dedicated to finding this!”

“I’m not losing a two-hundred-dollar ring!” she exclaimed.

Carol’s determination reminds me of the parable Jesus told about the kingdom of heaven, which “is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field” (MATTHEW 13:44). Certain things are worth going great lengths to find.

Throughout the Bible, God promises that those who seek Him will find Him. In Deuteronomy, He explained to the Israelites that they would find Him when they turned from their sin and sought Him with all their hearts (4:28–29). In the book of 2 Chronicles, King Asa gained encouragement from a similar promise (15:2). And in Jeremiah, God gave the same promise to the exiles, saying He would bring them back from captivity (29:13–14).

If we seek God, through His Word, worship, and in our daily lives, we will find Him. Over time, we’ll know Him on a deeper level. That will be even better than the sweet moment when Carol pulled her ring out of that trash bag! - JULIE SCHWAB

잠금 해제

뇌성마비 장애를 안고 태어난 소년은 말이나 의사소통을 할 수 없었습니다. 그러나 결코 포기하지 않았던 그의 어머니 찬탈 브라이언은 아들이 열 살 되었을 때 드디어 두 눈과 문자판을 통해 그와 소통하는 방법을 찾아냈습니다. 이런 돌파구를 찾은 후 어머니는 말했습니다. “이제 아들은 잠김에서 풀렸고 우리는 아이에게 무엇이든 물어볼 수 있어요.” 조나단은 지금 자신의 눈으로 소통하며 시를 읽고 쓰기까지 할 수 있습니다. 자신의 가족이나 친구들과 “대화”하는 것이 어떤지 묻는 질문에 그는 “그들에게 사랑한다고 말할 수 있어 너무 좋아요.”라고 말했습니다.

내게 큰 감동을 준 조나단의 이야기는 하나님이 어떻게 우리를 죄의 감옥에서 풀어주셨는지를 생각하게 합니다. 바울사도가 골로새에 있는 그리스도인들에게 편지한 것처럼, 전에는 우리의 악한 행실 때문에 우리가 원수가 되어 “하나님으로부터 멀리 떠났지만”(골로새서 1:21), 이제는 십자가 위에서 그리스도가 죽으심으로 말미암아 우리가 “거룩한 자”(22절)로 하나님 앞에 세워지게 되었습니다. 우리는 이제 열매를 맺고 하나님을 아는 지식으로 자라며 하나님의 능력 안에서 강건해짐으로 “주님께 합당한 삶”(10-11절)을 살 수 있습니다.

우리는 자유롭게 된 목소리로 하나님을 찬양하고 우리가 더 이상 죄에 묶여 살지 않게 됐다는 하나님의 복음을 전할 수 있습니다. 우리는 믿음을 굳게 함으로 그리스도 안에 있는 우리의 소망을 단단히 붙들 수 있습니다.

Unlocked

A boy born with cerebral palsy was unable to speak or communicate. But his mother, Chantal Bryan, never gave up, and when he was ten years old she figured out how to communicate with him through his eyes and a letter board. After this breakthrough, she said, “He was unlocked and we could ask him anything.” Now Jonathan reads and writes, including poetry, by communicating through his eyes. When asked what it’s like to “talk” with his family and friends, he said, “It is wonderful to tell them I love them.”

Jonathan’s story is profoundly moving and leads me to consider how God unlocks us from the prison of sin. As the apostle Paul wrote to the Christians at Colossae, once we were “alienated from God” (COLOSSIANS 1:21), our evil behavior making us His enemy, but through Christ’s death on the cross we are now presented to God as “holy in his sight” (V 22). We may now “live a life worthy of the Lord” as we bear fruit, grow in the knowledge of God, and are strengthened in His power (VV 10–11).

We can use our unlocked voices to praise God and share His good news that we are no longer bound to a life of sin. As we continue in our faith, we can hold firm to our hope in Christ. - AMY BOUCHER PYE

자유롭게 되다

어려서 시골에서 자라던 나에게 닭은 아주 흥미로운 존재였습니다. 닭을 붙잡았을 때마다 잠시 동안 누르고 있다가 가만히 놓아주면 닭은 여전히 눌려 있는 줄 알고 놓인 후에도 그 자리에 그대로 엎드려 있는 것이었습니다. 자기가 자유의 몸이 된 줄도 모르고 눌려 있다고 생각하는 것입니다.

우리가 예수님을 믿으면 예수님이 우리를 죄와 사탄의 올무에서 은혜로 풀어주십니다. 하지만 우리의 죄 짓던 습관과 행실을 바꾸는 데는 시간이 걸리기 때문에 사탄은 우리가 여전히 올무 안에 갇혀있다고 믿게 합니다. 그러나 성령님은 우리를 자유롭게 하셨고, 우리를 노예로 삼지 않으십니다. 바울은 로마인들에게 이렇게 말했습니다. “그러므로 이제 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 자에게는 결코 정죄함이 없나니 이는 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 생명의 성령의 법이 죄와 사망의 법에서 너를 해방하였음이라” (로마서 8:1-2).

하나님은 우리의 성경읽기와 기도, 그리고 성령의 능력을 통해 우리를 정결케 하시고 하나님을 위해 살도록 우리 안에 역사하십니다. 성경은 우리에게 확신을 갖고 예수님과 자유롭게 동행하라고 권면합니다.

예수님은 “아들이 너희를 자유롭게 하면 너희가 참으로 자유로우리라”(요한복음 8:36)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리스도 안에 있는 우리의 자유로 주님을 더욱 사랑하고 섬길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Set Free

When I was a boy in the village, something about chickens fascinated me. Whenever I caught one, I held it down for a few moments and then gently released it. Thinking I was still holding it, the chicken remained down; even though it was free to dash away, it felt trapped.

When we put our faith in Jesus, He graciously delivers us from sin and the hold that Satan had on us. However, because it may take time to change our sinful habits and behavior, Satan can make us feel trapped. But God’s Spirit has set us free; He doesn’t enslave us. Paul told the Romans, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death” (ROMANS 8:1–2).

Through our Bible reading, prayer, and the power of the Holy Spirit, God works in us to cleanse us and to help us live for Him. The Bible encourages us to be confident in our walk with Jesus without feeling as if we are not set free.

Jesus said, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (JOHN 8:36). May the freedom we have in Christ spur us on to love Him and serve Him. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

감사기도

나는 여러 해 동안 영국의 작가 G. K. 체스터튼의 글을 즐겨 읽었습니다. 그의 유머와 통찰력에 때론 웃다가도 깊은 생각에 잠길 때가 있습니다. 예를 들면 이런 글이 있습니다. “당신은 식사 전에 감사기도를 하지요. 좋은 일입니다. 그러나 나는 연극과 오페라를 감상하기 전에, 음악회와 무언극이 시작되기 전에, 독서하기 전에, 스케치나 색칠, 수영, 펜싱, 권투, 걷기, 놀기, 춤추기 전에, 그리고 펜을 들어 잉크에 찍기 전에 감사기도를 하지요.”

식사 전에 항상 하나님께 감사하는 것은 좋은 일이지만 거기에 그치면 안 됩니다. 바울 사도는 모든 행동과 노력이 하나님께 감사드리고 그분의 영광을 위하는 것이 되어야 한다고 생각했습니다. “또 무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하고 그를 힘입어 하나님 아버지께 감사하라”(골로새서 3:17). 오락이나 직업, 교육 등 모든 것은 우리가 주님을 경외하고 그분께 감사를 표현하는 통로가 됩니다.

바울은 또 골로새에 있는 성도들에게 “너희는 평강을 위하여 한 몸으로 부르심을 받았나니 너희는 또한 감사하는 자가 되라”(15절)고 권면했습니다.

“감사기도” 하기에 가장 좋은 장소는 언제 어디서든 우리가 주님께 감사하고 그분을 높이고자 하는 바로 그곳입니다.

Saying Grace

For many years, I’ve enjoyed the writings of British author G. K. Chesterton. His humor and insight often cause me to chuckle and then pause for more serious contemplation. For example, he wrote, “You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the play and the opera, and grace before the concert and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing; and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.”

It’s good for us to thank the Lord before every meal, but it shouldn’t stop there. The apostle Paul saw every activity, every endeavor as something for which we should thank God and that we should do for His glory. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (COLOSSIANS 3:17). Recreation, occupation, and education are all avenues through which we can honor the Lord and express our gratefulness to Him.

Paul also encouraged the believers in Colossae to “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful” (V 15).

The best place to “say grace” is anywhere and anytime we want to give thanks to the Lord and honor Him. - DAVID C. MCCASLAND

친구의 위로

방과 후 허리부터 발끝까지 진흙으로 범벅이 되어 집에 들어오는 딸을 보고 깜짝 놀랐던 엄마에 대한 글을 읽은 적이 있습니다. 딸의 설명은 이랬습니다. 한 친구가 미끄러져 흙탕물에 빠졌는데 다른 급우가 도움을 구하러 간 사이, 혼자 앉아 다친 다리를 잡고 있는 친구가 불쌍해서 그 딸이 친구와 함께 흙탕물에 앉아서 선생님이 올 때까지 기다렸다는 것입니다.

욥이 자식들을 처참하게 잃어버리고 온 몸에 난 악성 종기로 고생할 때 그 고통은 참기가 어려웠을 것입니다. 성경은 세 친구가 그를 위로하려고 왔다고 말합니다. 그들은 욥을 보고 “일제히 소리 질러 울며 각각 자기의 겉옷을 찢고 하늘을 향하여 티끌을 날려 자기 머리에 뿌리고 밤낮 칠 일 동안 그와 함께 땅에 앉았으나 욥의 고통이 심함을 보므로 그에게 한마디도 말하는 자가 없었습니다” (욥기 2:12-13).

욥의 친구들은 처음에는 분명히 이해하는 듯 보였습니다. 그들은 욥에게 그냥 같이 앉아서 슬퍼해 줄 누군가가 필요하다는 것을 알았습니다. 이제 세 사람은 계속 이어지는 성경에서 위로의 말을 하게 됩니다. 그런데 역설적인 것은 친구들이 이윽고 말을 시작하면서 욥에게 잘못된 조언을 한 것입니다(16:1-4).

상처받은 친구를 위로할 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법은 대개 그들과 고통 중에 함께 있어 주는 것입니다.

A Friend’s Comfort

I read about a mom who was surprised to see her daughter muddy from the waist down when she walked in the door after school. Her daughter explained that a friend had slipped and fallen into a mud puddle. While another classmate ran to get help, the little girl felt sorry for her friend sitting by herself and holding her hurt leg. So, the daughter went over and sat in the mud puddle with her friend until a teacher arrived.

When Job experienced the devastating loss of his children and became afflicted with painful sores on his entire body, his suffering was overwhelming. The Bible tells us that three of his friends wanted to comfort him. When they found Job, “they began to weep aloud, and they tore their robes and sprinkled dust on their heads. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was” (JOB 2:12–13).

Job’s friends initially showed remarkable understanding. They sensed that Job simply needed someone to sit and mourn with him. The three men will begin to speak in the next few chapters. The irony is that when the friends do begin to speak, they end up giving Job poor advice (16:1–4).

Often the best thing we can do when comforting a hurting friend is to sit with them in their suffering. - LISA SAMRA

속함

다른 여느 토요일 밤처럼 나는 그 주일 전날 밤에도 늦게까지 밖에 있었습니다. 갓 스무 살이던 나는 하나님을 피해 멀리 도망치던중이었습니다. 그런데 이상하게도 문득 아버지가 목회하시는 교회에 나가야겠다는 느낌이 강하게 왔습니다. 나는 빛바랜 청바지와 낡은 티셔츠 차림에 끈 풀린 운동화를 신고서 차를 몰고 교회로 향했습니다.

그날 아버지의 설교는 기억나지 않지만 아버지가 나를 보고 기뻐하시던 그 모습은 잊을 수가 없습니다. 아버지는 내 어깨에 팔을 두르시고 만나는 사람마다 나를 인사시켜 주셨습니다. 아버지는 “얘가 제 아들입니다” 라고 자랑스럽게 말했습니다. 아버지가 기뻐하시던 모습은 하나님의 사랑을 찍은 한 장의 사진처럼 수십 년이 지난 지금까지 내 기억에 남아있습니다.

사랑하는 아버지로서의 하나님의 모습은 성경 곳곳에 나타납니다. 이사야 44 장에서 선지자는 계속하던 경고를 멈추고 가족을 사랑하시는 하나님의 메시지를 선포합니다. “내가 택한 여수룬아......나의 영을 네 자손에게, 나의 복을 네 후손에게 부어 주리니”(2-3절). 이사야는 이어 그 후손들이 가문의 자부심을 이렇게 보여줄 것이라고 하였습니다. “한 사람은 이르기를 나는 여호와께 속하였다 할 것이며......또 다른 사람은 자기가 여호와께 속하였음을 그의 손으로 기록하고”(5절).

내가 나를 입양한 아버지의 자식인 것처럼, 방황하는 이스라엘도 하나님의 자녀였습니다. 내가 할 수 있는 어떤 것도 나를 향한 아버지의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없습니다. 나의 아버지는 하늘에 계신 하나님 아버지의 사랑을 보여주셨습니다.

하나님의 사랑은 우리 모두가 갈망하는 소속감과 정체성을 알게 해준다.

Belonging

I’d been out late the night before, just as I was every Saturday night. Just twenty years old, I was running from God as fast as I could. But suddenly, strangely, I felt compelled to attend the church my dad pastored. I put on my faded jeans, well-worn T-shirt, and unlaced high-tops and drove across town.

I don’t recall the sermon Dad preached that day, but I can’t forget how delighted he was to see me. With his arm over my shoulder, he introduced me to everyone he saw. “This is my son!” he proudly declared. His joy became a picture of God’s love that has stuck with me all these decades.

The imagery of God as loving Father occurs throughout the Bible. In Isaiah 44, the prophet interrupts a series of warnings to proclaim God’s message of family love. “Dear Israel, my chosen one,” he said. “I will pour out my Spirit on your descendants, and my blessing on your children” (VV 2–3 NLT ). Isaiah noted how the response of those descendants would demonstrate family pride. “Some will proudly claim, ‘I belong to the LORD ,’” he wrote. “Some will write the L ORD ’s name on their hands” (V 5 NLT ).

Wayward Israel belonged to God, just as I belonged to my adoptive father. Nothing I could do would ever make him lose his love for me. He gave me a glimpse of our heavenly Father’s love for us. - TIM GUSTAFSON

예수님과의 교제

내가 영광스럽게도 빌리 그래함 목사의 옆에 앉아 저녁식사를 한 것은 영원히 잊지 못할 것입니다. 영광으로 생각하면서도 무슨 대화가 적절한지를 몰라 약간 긴장도 되었습니다. 나는 그의 오랜 사역을 통해 가장 좋아했던 일을 묻는 것으로 대화를 시작하는 것이 좋겠다고 생각했습니다. 이어서 나는 내가 예상하는 대답들을 어설프게 나열하기 시작했습니다. 대통령과 왕과 여왕들을 알게 된 것이었는지? 아니면 세계 수백만의 사람들에게 복음을 전한 것이었는지?

빌리 그래함 목사는 내가 말을 마치기도 전에 주저 없이 대답했습니다. “예수님과의 교제이지요. 그분의 임재를 느끼고, 그분의 지혜를 얻고, 그분의 인도와 가르침을 받는 것, 그것이 나의 가장 큰 기쁨이었습니다.” 나는 그 자리에서 마음이 찔리며 도전을 받았습니다. 마음이 찔린 이유는 나라면 그처럼 대답하지 않았을 것이기 때문이었고, 도전을 받은 것은 나도 그처럼 되기를 원했기 때문이었습니다.

그것은 바울이 자신의 위대한 업적들도 “내 주 그리스도 예수를 아는 지식의 가장 고상함”(빌립보서 3:8)에 비하면 아무것도 아니라고 여긴 것과 같습니다. 예수님이, 그리고 그분과의 교제가 우리의 최고의 목표가 된다면 삶이 얼마나 풍요해질까 생각해보십시오.

Fellowship with Jesus

I’ll never forget the time I had the privilege of sitting next to Billy Graham at a dinner. I was honored but also somewhat nervous about what would be appropriate to say. I thought it would be an interesting conversation starter to ask what he loved most about his years of ministry. Then I awkwardly started to suggest possible answers. Was it knowing presidents, kings, and queens? Or preaching the gospel to millions of people around the world?

Before I had finished offering suggestions, Rev. Graham stopped me. Without hesitation he said, “It has been my fellowship with Jesus. To sense His presence, to glean His wisdom, to have Him guide and direct me—that has been my greatest joy.” I was instantly convicted and challenged. Convicted because I’m not sure that his answer would have been my answer, and challenged because I wanted it to be.

That’s what Paul had in mind when he counted his greatest achievements to be of no worth compared to the “surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (PHILIPPIANS 3:8). Think of how rich life would be if Jesus and our fellowship with Him was our highest pursuit. - JOE STOWELL

시간의 의미

오스 기니스는 ‘불가능한 사람들’이란 그의 책에서 아프리카 속담을 인용하여 이렇게 말했습니다. “서양인에게는 시계가 있고, 아프리카 사람에게는 시간이 있다.” 그의 글은 다른 사람들의 부탁에도 “시간이 없다”고 거절했던 순간들을 돌아보게 했습니다. 나는 급한 일에서 벗어나지 못하고 시간표와 마감 시간에 쫒기 듯 사는 내 삶에 대해 생각해보았습니다.

모세는 시편 90편에서 “우리에게 우리 날 계수함을 가르치사 지혜로운 마음을 얻게 하소서”(12절)라고 기도했습니다. 그리고 바울은 이렇게 썼습니다. “그런즉 너희가 어떻게 행할지를 자세히 주의하여......세월을 아끼라 때가 악하니라”(에베소서 5:15-16).

바울과 모세는 시간을 현명하게 사용하는 것은 단지 시간을 잘 지키는 것만은 아니라고 생각했을 것입니다. 상황에 따라 우리는 빡빡한 일정을 지켜야할 때도 있고, 아니면 누군가에게 우리의 귀한 시간을 더 내주어야 할 때도 있는 것입니다.

우리가 그리스도를 위해 세상에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 시간은 너무나 짧기 때문에 이 기회를 최대한 살려야 합니다. 그것은 잠시 우리의 시계와 계획표는 접어두고 주님이 우리에게 보내시는 사람들에게 그리스도의 오래 참으시는 사랑을 실천하는 것을 뜻하기도 합니다.

우리가 영원한 그리스도의 능력과 은혜 안에 거하면 우리의 시간도 영원한 것에 사용됩니다.

Telling Time

“Westerners have watches. Africans have time.” So said Os Guinness, quoting an African proverb in his book Impossible People. That caused me to ponder the times I have responded to a request with, “I don’t have time.” I thought about the tyranny of the urgent and how schedules and deadlines dominate my life.

Moses prayed in Psalm 90, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (V 12). And Paul wrote, “Be very careful, then, how you live . . . making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil” (EPHESIANS 5:15–16).

I suspect that Paul and Moses would agree that our wise use of time isn’t just a matter of clock-watching. The situation may call for us to keep a tight schedule—or it may compel us to give someone an extended gift of our time.

We have but a brief moment to make a difference for Christ in our world, and we need to maximize that opportunity. That may mean ignoring our watches and planners for a while as we show Christ’s patient love to those He brings into our lives.

As we live in the strength and grace of the timeless Christ, we impact our time for eternity.- BILL CROWDER

매순간이 중요하다

내가 만난 에이다는 친구나 가족들과 모두 사별하고 요양원에서 지내고 있었습니다. 그녀는 “늙으며 가장 힘든 것은 사람들이 나를 놔두고 먼저 가는 것을 봐야하는 것이지요.”라고 말했습니다. 어느 날 에이다에게 어떤 일에 관심이 있는지, 어떻게 시간을 보내는지 물었습니다. 그녀는 “내게 사는 것이 그리스도니 죽는 것도 유익함이라”(빌립보서 1:21)라고 했던 바울 사도의 성경말씀으로 대답하면서 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 살아 있는 동안 해야 할 일이 있지요. 몸이 괜찮은 날에는 여기 있는 사람들에게 예수님 이야기를 하고요, 힘든 날에는 기도를 합니다.”

의미심장하게도 바울은 감옥에서 빌립보서를 썼습니다. 그리고 그는 많은 그리스도인이 죽음을 맞이하면서 깨닫게 되는 하나의 현실을 인정했습니다. 천국이 우리를 반기는 듯 보이지만 우리가 이 땅에 남겨놓은 시간도 하나님께 중요하다는 것입니다.

바울처럼 에이다도 자기가 살아 숨 쉬는 모든 순간이 하나님을 섬기고 영화롭게 하는 기회라는 것을 알았습니다. 그래서 에이다는 다른 사람들을 사랑하고 그들에게 구원의 주님을 소개하면서 나날을 보냈습니다.

그리스도인은 아무리 힘든 순간에도 하나님과 동행하면 영원한 기쁨의 약속을 붙잡고 살 수 있습니다. 그리고 살면서도 하나님과의 관계를 누립니다. 하나님은 우리의 모든 순간들을 의미 있게 해주십니다.

Every Moment Matters

When I met Ada, she had outlived her entire group of friends and family and was living in a nursing home. “It’s the hardest part of getting old,” she told me, “watching everyone else move on and leave you behind.” One day I asked Ada what kept her interest and how she spent her time. She answered me with a Scripture passage from the apostle Paul (PHILIPPIANS 1:21): “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Then she said, “While I’m still around, I have work to do. On my good days, I get to talk to the people here about Jesus; on the hard days, I can still pray.”

Significantly, Paul wrote Philippians while in prison. And he acknowledged a reality many Christians understand as they face their mortality: Even though heaven seems so inviting, the time we have left on Earth matters to God.

Like Paul, Ada recognized that every breath she took was an opportunity to serve and glorify God. So Ada spent her days loving others and introducing them to her Savior.

Even in our darkest moments, Christians can hold on to the promise of permanent joy in the company of God. And while we live, we enjoy relationship with Him. He fills all our moments with significance. - RANDY KILGORE

잘못된 비판

나는 평소에 휴대폰을 보며 거리를 걷는 사람들을 보면 속으로 이렇게 말하며 쉽게 비판했습니다. ‘저러다가 차에 치인다는 걸 왜 모를까? 자기 안전에 관심도 없나?’ 그런데 내가 어느 날 한 골목길의 입구에서 길을 건너면서 문자 메시지를 보느라 내 왼편의 차를 보지 못했습니다. 다행히 운전자는 나를 보고 차를 급하게 멈췄습니다. 나는 부끄러웠습니다. 독선으로 남을 손가락질했던 것이 모두 나에게로 돌아왔습니다. 다른 사람을 비판했던 내가 똑같은 행동을 한 것이었습니다.

나의 위선은 예수님이 산상수훈에서 하신 말씀과 같은 종류의 것이었습니다. “외식하는 자여 먼저 네 눈 속에서 들보를 빼어라 그 후에야 밝히 보고 형제의 눈 속에서 티를 빼리라”(마태복음 7:5). 나에게 큰 “들보” 가 있었습니다. 이 사각지대를 통해서 잘못된 판단으로 다른 사람들을 비판했던 것입니다.

예수님은 또한 “너희가 비판하는 그 비판으로 너희가 비판을 받을 것이다”(7:2)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그날 자동차 앞을 지나가는 나를 발견하고 급정거한 운전자의 짜증 섞인 표정을 떠올리면 휴대폰에 몰두하는 사람들을 볼 때 짜증을 냈던 나의 모습이 함께 떠오릅니다.

우리는 아무도 완벽하지 않습니다. 그러나 나는 가끔 이 사실을 잊어버리고 성급하게 남을 비판합니다. 우리는 모두 하나님의 은혜가 필요한 사람들입니다.

Impaired Judgment

I’ve been quick to judge anyone I saw walking in the street while staring at a phone. How could they be so oblivious to the cars about to hit them? I’ve told myself. Don’t they care about their own safety? But one day, while crossing the entrance to an alleyway, I was so engrossed in a text message, that I missed seeing a car at my left. Thankfully, the driver saw me and came to an abrupt stop. But I felt ashamed. All of my self-righteous finger-pointing came back to haunt me. I had judged others, only to do the same thing myself.

My hypocrisy is the kind of thinking that Jesus addressed in the Sermon on the Mount: “First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye” (MATTHEW 7:5). I had a huge “plank”—a blind spot through which I judged others with my own impaired judgment.

“For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged,” Jesus also said (7:2). Recalling the disgusted look on the driver’s face that day, after having to make an abrupt stop when I walked in front of the car, I’m reminded of the disgusted looks I gave others engrossed in their phones.

None of us is perfect. But sometimes I forget that in my haste to judge others. We’re all in need of God’s grace. - LINDA WASHINGTON
