여정을 걸어갈 힘

그리스도인의 삶을 우화적으로 그린 고전 작품, ‘높은데서 사슴처럼’이라는 책은 하박국 3장 19절에 근거를 두고 있습니다. 이 이야기에서 ‘두려움’이라는 이름의 여인은 ‘목자’ 와 함께 여정을 떠납니다. 그러나 ‘두려움’은 너무나 무서워 ‘목자’에게 자기를 안고 걸어가 달라고 부탁합니다.

‘목자’는 부드럽게 대답합니다. “네가 걸어 올라가지 않고 내가 너를 저 ‘높은 곳’ 까지 안고 갈 수도 있어. 하지만 그러면 넌 사슴같이 튼튼한 발을 갖지 못하게 될 것이고 내가 가는 곳에 늘 동행할 수가 없게 된단다.”

‘두려움’은 구약의 하박국 선지자가 물었던 것과 똑같은 질문을 합니다 (그리고 솔직히 나의 질문이기도 합니다). “왜 내가 고통을 당해야 합니까?” “내 인생은 왜 이렇게 고달픕니까?”

하박국은 이스라엘 백성들이 유배 당하기 전, 기원전 7세기 말에 유다왕국에 살았습니다. 선지자는 사회적 불의가 만연하고 임박한 바벨론의 침공 앞에서 두려움에 꼼짝 못하고 있는 세상을 보았습니다(하박국 1:2-11). 그는 주님께 친히 간섭하셔서 고통을 제거해달라고 간구했습니다(1:13). 하나님은 주님의 때에 공의로 다스리시겠다고 대답하셨습니다(2:3).

하박국은 믿음으로 주님을 신뢰하기로 했습니다. 비록 고통은 끝나지 않았지만 선지자는 하나님께서 계속 그의 힘이 되어주실 것을 믿었습니다.

우리도 이처럼 하나님이 우리의 힘이 되어 고통을 인내하게 하시고, 또 우리 삶의 여정에서 가장 힘든 때에 그리스도와 더욱 깊은 교제를 갖게 하시는 위로를 받을 수 있습니다.

Strength for Your Journey

Hinds Feet on High Places, a classic allegory of the Christian life, is based on Habakkuk 3:19. The story follows the character Much-Afraid as she goes on a journey with the Shepherd. But, Much-Afraid is scared so she asks the Shepherd to carry her.

The Shepherd kindly replies, “I could carry you all the way up to the High Places myself, instead of leaving you to climb there. But if I did, you would never be able to develop hinds’ feet, and become my companion and go where I go.”

Much-Afraid echoes the questions of the Old Testament prophet Habakkuk (and if I’m honest, my questions too): “Why must I experience suffering?” “Why is my journey difficult?”

Habakkuk lived in Judah in the late seventh century bc before the Israelites were taken into exile. The prophet found himself in a society that overlooked social injustice and was immobilized by the fear of imminent invasion by the Babylonians (HABAKKUK 1:2–11). He asked the Lord to intervene and remove suffering (1:13). God replied that He would act justly but in His timing (2:3).

In faith, Habakkuk chose to trust the Lord. Even if the suffering did not end, the prophet believed that God would continue to be his strength.

We too can take comfort that the Lord is our strength to help us endure suffering and will also use the most challenging of life’s journeys to deepen our fellowship with Christ. LISA SAMRA

경찰관 미이오의 마음

경찰서로 돌아온 미이오 순경은 너무나 지쳐 벽에 기대섰습니다. 그는 가정폭력 신고를 받고 나가 한 나절을 시달리고 돌아왔습니다. 그 사건으로 여인과 동거하던 남자는 구류되고 어린 딸은 응급실로 실려갔습니다. 엄마는 어쩌다 이렇게 되었는지 어쩔 줄 몰라 했습니다. 이 사건 때문에 그 젊은 경찰관은 오래도록 힘들어 했습니다.

그의 상사가 “빅, 자네도 어쩔 수 없었던 일이잖나.”라며 위로의 말을 해 주었지만 그 말은 공허하게만 들렸습니다. 어떤 경찰관들은 퇴근과 동시에 직장에서 있었던 일을 다 잊는 것 같지만, 빅 미이오는 그러질 못합니다. 이번처럼 힘든 경우는 더욱 그렇습니다.

경찰관 미이오의 마음은 남의 고통을 함께 아파하시는 예수님의 마음을 보여 줍니다. 예수님의 제자들이 주님께 와서 “천국에서는 누가 크니이까”(마태복음 18:1) 라고 물었습니다. 예수님은 한 어린아이를 데려오라 하시고는 제자들에게 “너희가 돌이켜 어린아이들과 같이 되지 아니하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라”(3절)고 말씀하셨습니다. 그리고 누구든지 어린아이에게 해를 가하는 자들에게 준엄한 경고를 하셨습니다 (6절). 사실 어린아이들은 예수님께 아주 특별했습니다. 주님은 “저희 천사들이 하늘에서 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 얼굴을 항상 뵈옵느니라” (10절)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

그런데 어린아이들을 향한 예수님의 사랑이 우리 모두를 향한 그의 사랑과 연결되어 있다는 것이 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다! 그래서 예수님이 우리를 어린아이 같은 믿음으로 주님의 아들과 딸이 되라고 부르시는 것입니다.

Officer Miglio’s Heart

Back at the police station, Officer Miglio slumped wearily against a wall. A domestic violence call had just consumed half his shift. Its aftermath left a boyfriend in custody, a young daughter in the emergency room, and a shaken mother wondering how it had come to this. This call would wear on the young officer for a long time.

“Nothing you could do, Vic,” said his sergeant sympathetically. But the words rang hollow. Some police officers seem able to leave their work at work. Not Vic Miglio. Not the tough cases like this one.

Officer Miglio’s heart reflects the compassion of Jesus. Christ’s disciples had just come to Him with a question: “Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” (MATTHEW 18:1). Calling a small child to Him, He told His disciples, “Unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (V. 3). Then He gave a stern
warning to anyone who would harm a child (V. 6). In fact, children are so special to Him that Jesus told us, “Their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven” (V. 10).

How comforting, then, that Jesus’s love for children is connected to His love for us all! That’s why He invites us, through childlike faith, to become His sons and daughters. TIM GUSTAFSON

구조 요청

2016년 한 해 동안 뉴욕시에서 엘리베이터 사고로 5명이 목숨을 잃고 51명이 부상을 당하자, 시 당국은 침착하고 안전하게 대처하는 방법을 교육하는 광고 캠페인을 시작했습니다. 캠페인은 가장 나쁜 경우가 문제가 발생했을 때 사람들이 스스로 자신을 구하려고 애를 쓰는 것이라고 했습니다. 당국이 말하는 가장 좋은 방법은 그냥 “벨을 누르고, 진정하고, 기다리라.”는 것입니다. 뉴욕의 빌딩 관리 당국은 사람들을 다치지 않게 보호하고 위기에서 구조할 수 있는 신속한 대응체제를 갖추겠다고 약속했습니다.

사 도 행 전 에 서 베 드 로 는 우리가 스스로를 구원하려고 하는 잘못에 대해 설교를 하였습니다. 사도행전을 쓴 누가는 그리스도를 믿는 사람들이 자기들도 모르는 언어로 말하는 놀라운 사건들을 기록합니다(사도행전 2:1-12). 베드로는 일어나 자신의 유대인 형제자매들에게 그들이 목격한 것은 성령의 부으심과 구원의 날에 대한 구약의 예언(요엘 2:28-32)이 성취된 것이라고 설명했습니다. 죄와 죄의 결과로부터 구원 받기 위해 예수님을 찾는 사람들 속에 이제 성령님이 축복하시는 것을 눈으로 본 것입니다. 그리고 베드로는 이 구원은 누구에게나 가능하다는 것을 그들에게 말해주었습니다(21절). 우리는 율법을 지켜서가 아니라 예수님을 주님과 메시아로 믿음으로써 하나님께 나아갈 수 있습니다.

죄에 갇혀 있는 사람은 스스로를 구원할 수 없습니다. 구원 받는 유일한 소망은 예수님을 주님과 메시아로 인정하고 믿는 것입니다.

Call for Help

After five deaths and fifty-one injuries in elevator accidents in 2016, New York City launched an ad campaign to educate people on how to stay calm and be safe. The worst cases were people who tried to save themselves when something went wrong. The best plan of action, authorities say, is simply, “Ring, relax, and wait.” New York building authorities made a commitment to respond promptly to protect people from injury and extract them from their predicament.

In the book of Acts, Peter preached a sermon that addressed the error of trying to save ourselves. Luke, who wrote the book, records some remarkable events in which believers in Christ were speaking in languages they did not know (ACTS 2:1–12). Peter got up to explain to his Jewish brothers and sisters that what they were witnessing was the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy (JOEL 2:28–32)—the outpouring of the Spirit and a day of salvation. The blessing of the Holy Spirit was now visibly seen in those who called on Jesus for rescue from sin and its effects. Then Peter told them how this salvation is available for anyone (V 21). Our access to God comes not through keeping the Law but through trusting Jesus as Lord and Messiah.

If we are trapped in sin, we cannot save ourselves. Our only hope for being rescued is acknowledging and trusting Jesus as Lord and Messiah.

반석 위의 집

친구들이 몇 년 동안 자기들 집에서 생활하다가 집의 거실이 점점 내려앉고 있다는 것을 알았습니다. 벽에 균열이 생기고 창문이 이전처럼 열리지 않았습니다. 그들은 이 거실이 기초공사 없이 추가로 지어졌다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 부실 공사를 바로 잡으려면 건축업자를 불러 몇 달에 걸쳐 기초공사를 새로 해야 했습니다.

공사가 끝난 후 나중에 내가 찾아가 보니 (갈라졌던 틈이 사라지고 창문은 열리게 되었지만) 큰 차이를 볼 수 없었습니다. 그러나 튼튼한 기초가 중요하다는 것을 나는 알게 되었습니다.

이것은 우리 삶에서도 마찬가지입니다.

예수님은 그의 말씀에 귀 기울이지 않는 어리석음을 설명하시기 위해 지혜로운 건축자와 어리석은 건축자를 비유로 들어 말씀하셨습니다(누가복음 6:46-49). 주님의 말씀을 듣고 순종하는 사람들은 말씀을 듣고도 무시하는 사람들과는 달리 견고한 기반 위에 집을 짓는 사람과 같습니다. 예수님은 폭풍우가 와도 그들의 집은 든든히 서 있을 것이라고 확실히 말씀하셨습니다. 그들의 믿음은 흔들리지 않을 것입니다.

우리가 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 순종하면 주님이 우리 삶의 기초를 견고히 마련하시기 때문에 평안을 누릴 수 있습니다. 우리는 성경을 읽고 기도하고 다른 그리스도인들에게서 배우면서 주님을 향한 사랑을 더욱 강하게 할 수 있습니다. 배신이나 고통이나 절망 같이 우리를 때리는 폭우를 만나도 우리의 기반은 견고하다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 우리의 구세주는 우리에게 필요한 것으로 도와주실 것입니다.

The House on the Rock

After living in their house for several years, my friends realized that their living room was sinking—cracks appeared on the walls and a window would no longer open. They learned that this room had been added without a foundation. Rectifying the shoddy workmanship would mean months of work as builders laid a new foundation.

They had the work done, and when I visited them afterwards, I couldn’t see much difference (although the cracks were gone and now the window opened). But I understood that a solid foundation matters.

This is true in our lives as well.

Jesus shared a parable about wise and foolish builders to illustrate the folly of not listening to Him (LUKE 6:46–49). Those who hear and obey His words are like the person who builds a house on a firm foundation, unlike those who hear but ignore His words. Jesus assured His listeners that when the storms come, their house would stand. Their faith would not be shaken.

We can find peace knowing that as we listen to and obey Jesus, He forms a strong foundation for our lives. We can strengthen our love for Him through reading the Bible, praying, and learning from other Christians. Then when we face the torrents of rain lashing against us—whether betrayal, pain, or disappointment—we can trust that our foundation is solid. Our Savior will provide the support we need.

나를 사랑하신다고요?

나는 십대 때 어머니의 권위에 대항하는 전형적인 반항기를 거쳤습니다. 아버지는 내가 사춘기가 되기 전에 돌아가셔서 어머니가 아버지의 도움 없이 혼자서 힘들게 양육이라는 파도를 헤쳐 나가야 했습니다.

엄마가 나에게 안된다는 말을 자주하셨기 때문에, 엄마는 내가 즐거워하는 것도 원치 않고, 어쩌면 나를 사랑하지도 않는다고 생각했던 것을 기억합니다. 그러나 지금은 엄마가 나한테 해로운 것을 못하게 했던 이유는 바로 나를 사랑하기 때문이라는 것을 압니다.

이스라엘 백성들은 바빌론에 잡혀 갔던 세월 때문에 하나님이 그들을 얼마나 사랑하시는지 의문을 가졌습니다. 그러나 그 포로 생활은 하나님께 끊임없이 반항하는 그들을 바로잡기 위한 것이었습니다. 그래서 이제 하나님은 그들에게 말라기 선지자를 보내셨습니다. 그가 전한 하나님의 말씀은 이렇게 시작합니다. “내가 너희를 사랑하였노라”(말라기 1:2). 그런데 이스라엘 백성들은 마치 “그게 정말입니까?”라고 하듯 하나님이 어떻게 그들을 사랑하였느냐고 회의적으로 반응했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 말라기를 통해서 그 사랑을 어떻게 보여주셨는지를 말씀해주셨습니다. 하나님은 에돔 사람들을 놔두고 그들을 선택하셨던 것입니다.

우리는 누구나 살면서 힘든 시기를 지나며 그때에 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 의심하기도 합니다. 하지만 하나님이 한결같은 사랑으로 보여주신 수많은 일들을 회상해봅시다. 우리가 멈추어 하나님의 선하심을 깊이 생각해보면 그분은 진실로 사랑의 아버지 하나님이라는 것을 알게 됩니다.

You Love Me?

As a teenager, I went through the typical season of rebellion against my mother’s authority. My father died before I entered adolescence, so my mom had to navigate these turbulent parenting waters without his help.

I recall thinking that Mom didn’t want me to ever have any fun—and maybe didn’t even love me—because she frequently said no. I see now that she said no to activities that weren’t good for me precisely because she loves me.

The Israelites questioned how much God loved them because of their time in captivity in Babylon. But that captivity was God’s correction for their continued rebellion against Him. So now, God sent the prophet Malachi to them. His opening words from the Lord were, “I have loved you” (MALACHI 1:2). Israel replied skeptically, inquiring as to how God has loved them, as if to say, “Really?” But God, through Malachi, reminded them of the way He had demonstrated that love: He had chosen them over the Edomites.

We all go through difficult seasons in life. We may be tempted to question God’s love for us during those times. Let’s recall the many ways He’s shown us His unfailing love. When we stop to consider His goodness, we find that He is indeed a loving Father.

신뢰하기를 배움

나는 십대 때 어머니가 나에게 믿음을 가지라고 하면 종종 대들곤 했습니다. 어머니가 “하나님을 믿어야지. 그분이 너를 돌보실거야.”라고 말씀하시면 나는 소리를 높여 “그렇게 간단한 문제가 아니에요, 엄마! 하나님은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕는다고 하잖아요!”라고 대꾸를 했습니다.

그러나 “하나님은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕는다.”는 말은 성경 어디에도 없습니다. 성경은 그 대신 우리의 일용할 것을 얻기 위해 하나님께 의지하라고 가르칩니다. 예수님은 말씀하십니다. “공중의 새를 보아라. 씨를 뿌리지도 않고, 거두지도 않고, 곳간에 모아들이지도 않으나, 너희의 하늘 아버지께서 그것들을 먹이신다. 너희는 새보다 귀하지 아니하냐? 너희 가운데서 누가 걱정을 해서 자기 수명을 한 순간인들 늘일 수 있느냐?”(마태복음 6:26-27, 새번역).

우리가 누리는 모든 것, 곧 생계를 꾸려가는 능력과 “스스로를 돕는” 것까지도 측량할 수 없을 만큼 우리를 사랑하고 귀히 여기시는 하나님 아버지의 선물입니다.

삶의 마지막이 가까워오면서 치매가 어머니의 창의력과 기억을 가져갔지만, 하나님을 향한 어머니의 믿음은 그대로였습니다. 어머니가 한동안 우리 집에서 지내실 때 나는 “앞자리”에 앉아 하나님이 예상치 못한 방법으로 어머니의 필요를 채워주시는 모습을 모두 목도할 수 있었고, 그것은 어머니가 내내 옳으셨다는 것을 알게 해주었습니다. 어머니는 걱정 대신에 자신을 돌보아주겠다고 약속하신 그분께 자신을 맡기셨습니다. 그리고 하나님도 그분의 신실하심을 다 보여주셨습니다.

Learning to Trust

When I was a teenager I sometimes challenged my mother when she tried to encourage me to have faith. “Trust God. He will take care of you,” she would tell me. “It’s not that simple, Mom!” I would bark back. “God helps those who help themselves!”

But those words, “God helps those who help themselves” are nowhere to be found in Scripture. Instead, God’s Word teaches us to depend on Him for our daily needs. Jesus tells us, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (MATTHEW 6:26–27).

Everything we enjoy—even the strength to earn a living and “help ourselves”—are gifts from a heavenly Father who loves us and values us beyond our ability to fathom.

As Mom neared the end of her life, Alzheimer’s disease robbed her of her creative mind and memories, but her trust in God remained. She lived in our home for a season, where I was given a “front-row seat” to observe God’s provision for her needs in unexpected ways—ways that helped me see she had been right all along. Instead of worrying, she entrusted herself to the One who promised to take care of her. And He showed Himself faithful.

계속해서 섬기라

교육심리학자인 벤자민 블룸은 젊은 사람들의 재능 개발에 대해 연구하면서 운동선수, 예술가, 학자들 가운데 성적이 매우 우수한 120명의 어린 시절을 조사한 결과 그들 모두에게서 한 가지 공통점을 발견하였습니다. 그것은 상당히 오랜 기간 동안 강도 높은 훈련을 했다는 것입니다.

블룸의 연구는 우리 삶의 어느 영역에서나 성장하는 데에는 훈련이 필요하다는 것을 말해줍니다. 하나님과 동행하는 삶에서도 주님을 믿는 믿음 가운데 자라갈 수 있는 한 가지 방법은 그와 정기적으로 시간을 보내는 영적 훈련을 하는 것입니다.

다니엘은 훈련받은 대로 하나님과 동행하는 것을 최우선으로 했던 좋은 예입니다. 다니엘은 어려서부터 신중하고 현명한 결정을 내리기 시작했습니다(1:8). 그는 또한 작정하여 정기적으로 기도하며 “하나님께 감사드렸습니다”(6:10). 이렇게 하나님을 수시로 구하며 사는 그를 보며 사람들은 그의 믿음을 쉽게 알 수 있었습니다. 실제로 다리오 왕은 다니엘을 “살아계시는 하나님의 종”(20절)이라고 했고, 두 번이나 다니엘을 “항상” 하나님을 섬기는
사람이라 언급했습니다(16,20절).

우리도 다니엘처럼 하나님이 절대로 필요합니다. 하나님이 우리 안에 역사하셔서 하나님과 함께 하는 시간을 갖기를 원하게 하신다니 얼마나 좋은지요(빌립보서 2:13). 그러므로 하나님과 함께 시간을 보낼 때 사랑이 더욱 넘쳐흐르고 우리 구주를 아는 지식과 명철이 자라는 것을 믿으며(1:9-11) 매일 매일 하나님 앞으로 나아갑시다.

Serve Continually

When educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom, researching how to develop talent in young people, examined the childhoods of 120 elite performers—athletes, artists, scholars—he found that all of them had one thing in common: they had practiced intensively for long periods of time.

Bloom’s research suggests that growing in any area of our lives requires discipline. In our walk with God, too, cultivating the spiritual discipline of regularly spending time with Him is one way we can grow in our trust in Him.

Daniel is a good example of someone who prioritized a disciplined walk with God. As a young person, Daniel started making careful and wise decisions (1:8). He also was committed to praying regularly, “giving thanks to God” (6:10). His frequent seeking of God resulted in a life in which his faith was easily recognized by those around him. In fact, King Darius described Daniel as a “servant of the living God” (V 20) and twice described him as a person who served God “continually” (VV 16, 20).

Like Daniel, we desperately need God. How good to know that God works in us so that we long to spend time with Him! (PHILIPPIANS 2:13). So let us come every day before God, trusting that our time with Him will result in a love that will overflow more and more and in a growing knowledge and understanding of our Savior (1:9–11).

언 것을 녹이다

화해라는 주제의 원탁 토론에서 한 참석자의 말이 지혜로웠습니다. “사람을 어떤 시간에 묶어 얼려놓지 마십시오.” 그는 사람들의 실수를 오래 기억하고 만회할 수 있는 기회는 주지 않는 우리의 성향을 이야기한 것입니다.

베드로의 삶에서도 하나님이 그를 “얼려놓을” 수 있었던 많은 순간들이 있었습니다. 그러나 하나님은 한 번도 그러시지 않았습니다. 충동적인 성격의 제자 베드로는 예수님에게 “훈계” 까지 하다가 무서운 책망을 받았습니다 (마태복음 16:21-23). 그가 그리스도를 부인한 것은 유명한 일이고(요한복음 18:15-27) 나중에 가서야 회복이 되었습니다(21:15-19). 그리고 한 번은 교회 안에서 인종차별 문제도 만들었습니다.

게바라고도 하는 베드로가 이방인과 자기를 구별하면서 문제가 생겼습니다 (갈라디아서 2:11-12). 그가 이방인들과 자유롭게 어울린 것이 얼마 안 된 때였습니다. 그러나 그리스도를 믿는 사람들도 할례를 받아야 한다고 주장하는 몇몇 유대인들이 오자 베드로는 할례 받지 않은 이방인들을 피하기 시작했습니다. 이것은 모세의 율법으로 돌아가는 위험한 일이었습니다. 바울은 베드로의 행동을 “위선”이라고 했습니다(13절). 바울이 담대하게 지적했기 때문에 문제가 해결되었습니다. 베드로는 하나님의 뜻대로 우리를 하나 되게 하시는 영으로 계속 하나님을 섬겼습니다.

아무도 자기의 가장 나빴던 순간에 계속 얼어있을 필요가 없습니다. 하나님의 은혜 안에서 우리는 서로를 안아주고, 서로에게서 배우고, 필요하면 서로를 지적하며 하나님 사랑 안에서 함께 자라갈 수 있습니다.

Unfrozen

At a roundtable discussion about reconciliation, one participant wisely said, “Don’t freeze people in time.” He observed how we tend to remember mistakes people make and never grant them the opportunity to change.

There are so many moments in Peter’s life when God could have “frozen” him in time. But He never did. Peter—the impulsive disciple—“corrected” Jesus, earning a sharp rebuke from the Lord (MATTHEW 16:21–23). He famously denied Christ (JOHN 18:15–27), only to be restored later (21:15–19). And he once contributed to racial divisions within the church.

The issue arose when Peter (also called Cephas) had separated himself from the Gentiles (GALATIANS 2:11–12). Only recently he associated freely with them. But some Jews arrived who insisted that circumcision was required for believers in Christ, so Peter began avoiding the uncircumcised Gentiles. This marked a dangerous return to the law of Moses. Paul called Peter’s behavior “hypocrisy” (V 13). Because of Paul’s bold confrontation, the issue was resolved. Peter went on to serve God in the beautiful spirit of unity He intends for us.

No one needs to remain frozen in their worst moments. In God’s grace we can embrace each other, learn from each other, confront each other when it’s necessary, and grow together in His love.

넉넉히 베푸는 사람들

교회 지도자들은 하나님께서 우리 교회가 세워진 이래 이루신 일들을 모두 회고한 후에, 우리 커뮤니티를 더 잘 섬기는데 도움이 될 새 체육관 건립 계획을 교인들에게 설명했습니다. 그들은 건축기금을 위한 약정서에 제일 먼저 서명하겠다고 했습니다. 나는 처음에는 이기적인 마음으로 기도하면서, 우리가 이미 작정한 헌금 외에는 더 헌금하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그래도 남편과 나는 진행되는 건축 사업을 위해 기도는 계속 하기로 했습니다. 그러다 하나님께서 계속해서 우리의 모든 필요를 채워주시는 것을 생각하게 되면서 마침내 매달 새로 헌금하기로 결정했습니다. 우리 교회 식구들의 헌금이 다 합쳐져 건축비 모두가 지불되었습니다.

개관식을 하고 사역을 시작한 이후 지금까지 하나님은 감사하게도 다양한 방법으로 커뮤니티 행사에 이 체육관을 사용하셨습니다. 나는 넉넉히 베푼 다른 한 사람 다윗 왕이 생각났습니다. 주님은 그의 성전을 짓는 데 다윗 왕을 선택하지는 않으셨지만 다윗은 그 과업에 자신의 모든 자원을 투자했습니다(열왕기상 29:1-5). 왕 아래의 지도자들과 그들이 섬겼던 백성들도 모두 넉넉하게 바쳤습니다(6-9절). 왕은 그들이 바친 모든 것이 창조주이시고 운영하시는 분이시며 모든 것의 주인이신 하나님께서 그들에게 먼저 주셨던 것임을 인정했습니다(10-16절).

우리는 모든 것이 하나님의 소유라는 것을 깨달을 때 다른 사람들의 유익을 위해 감사하는 마음으로 넉넉하고 신실한 기부를 약정할 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리가 궁핍할 때 주님이 베푸시며, 나아가 다른 이들의 관대함까지 사용하셔서 우리를 도우신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다.

Generous Givers

After reviewing all God had already done throughout our church’s history, leaders presented the congregation with a proposal for a new gym to help us better serve our community. The leadership team announced they’d be the first to sign pledge notes to fund the construction. I initially prayed with a heart soured by selfishness, not wanting to offer more money than we had already committed to give. Still, my husband and I agreed to pray for the ongoing project. While considering all God continued providing for us, we eventually decided on a monthly offering. The combined gifts of our church family paid for the entire building.

Grateful for the many ways God’s used that gym for community events since we celebrated opening its doors for ministry, I’m reminded of another generous giver—King David. Though the Lord didn’t choose him to build His temple, David invested all his resources to the project (1 CHRONICLES 29:1–5). The leaders under him and the people they served gave generously too (VV 6–9). The king acknowledged all they’d contributed had first been given to them by God—the Creator, Sustainer, and Owner of everything (VV 10–16).

When we recognize God owns it all, we can commit to grateful, generous, and faithful giving for the benefit of others. And we can trust the Lord will provide—and may even use the generosity of others to help us when we’re in need.

우리가 예수를 뵙고자 하나이다

장례식에서 기도를 한 후 강대상 아래를 내려다보니 “선생이여 우리가 예수를 뵙고자 하나이다”라는 요한복음 12장 21절 말씀이 새겨진 놋쇠 명판이 눈에 띄었습니다. 그렇습니다. 우리가 눈물과 미소로 떠나보낸 그 여인에게서 어떻게 예수님을 보았는지를 생각해보니 아주 적절한 말씀이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 그녀는 살면서 많은 험한 일과 절망에 부딪히면서도 예수님을 믿는 믿음을 포기한 적이 없었습니다. 그리고 하나님의 영이 그녀 안에 살아계셨기 때문에 우리는 예수님을 볼 수 있었습니다.

요한복음은 예수님이 예루살렘에 입성하신 뒤(요한복음 12:12-16 참조) 몇몇 헬라 사람들이 제자 중의 하나인 빌립에게 다가와 “선생이여 우리가 예수를 뵙고자 하나이다”(21절)라고 간청하는 것을 자세히 기록하고 있습니다. 그들은 아마도 예수님의 병 고침과 기적에 대해 관심이 많았겠지만 유대인이 아니었기 때문에 성전 안마당에 들어갈 수가 없었을 것입니다. 예수님은 그들의 요청을 전달받고서 인자가 영광을 얻을 때가 왔도다(23절)라고 선언하셨습니다. 그것은 예수님이 많은 사람들의 죄를 대신해 죽을 것을 의미한 것이었습니다. 예수님은 유대인들 뿐 아니라 이방인들(20절의 “헬라인”) 에게까지 다가가 그의 사명을 완수하려고 하시는데, 이제 그들이 예수님을 보게 되는 것입니다.

예수님은 돌아가신 후 성령님을 보내셔서 제자들 안에 거하게 하셨습니다(14:16-17). 그래서 우리가 예수님을 사랑하고 섬길 때 주님이 우리의 삶 속에서 활동하시는 것을 봅니다. 그리고 놀랍게도 우리 주위의 사람들도 예수님을 보게 됩니다!

We Would See Jesus

As I looked down at the pulpit where I was sharing prayers at a funeral, I glimpsed a brass plaque bearing words from John 12:21: “Sir, we would see Jesus” ( KJV ). Yes, I thought, how fitting to consider how we saw Jesus in the woman we were celebrating with tears and smiles. Although she faced challenges and disappointments in her life, she never gave up her faith in Christ. And because God’s Spirit lived in her, we could see Jesus.

John’s gospel recounts how after Jesus rode into Jerusalem (SEE JOHN 12:12–16), some Greeks approached Philip, one of the disciples, asking, “Sir, . . . we would like to see Jesus” (V 21). They were probably curious about Jesus’s healings and miracles, but as they weren’t Jewish, they weren’t allowed into the inner courts of the temple. When their request was passed along to Jesus, He announced that His hour had come to be glorified (V 23). And by that, He meant that He would die for the sins of many. He would fulfill His mission to reach not only the Jews but the Gentiles (the “Greeks” in verse 20), and now they would see Jesus.

After Jesus died, He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in His followers (14:16–17). Thus as we love and serve Jesus, we see Him active in our lives. And, amazingly, those around us too can see Jesus!
