와이파이가 됩니까?

청년들과 함께 가는 선교여행을 준비하면서 가장 많이 들었던 질문은 ‘거기 와이파이가 됩니까?’였습니다. 그럴 때마다 나는 될 거라고 자신 있게 대답해주었습니다. 그러다 어느 날 밤 와이파이가 끊겼을 때 얼마나 많은 한탄과 불평이 쏟아졌는지 상상해보십시오!

많은 사람들이 스마트폰을 갖고 있지 않으면 불안해합니다. 그리고 우리 손에 아이폰이나 안드로이드폰이 있을 때에는 그 화면에 쉽게 빠져듭니다.

많은 다른 경우처럼 인터넷이나 인터넷으로 연결되는 모든 것들도 우리가 어떻게 사용하느냐에 따라 집중을 방해하는 것이 될 수도, 축복이 될 수도 있습니다. 잠언에는 “명철한 자의 마음은 지식을 요구하고 미련한 자의 입은 미련한 것을 즐기느니라”(15:14)라는 말이 있습니다.

하나님의 말씀의 지혜를 삶에 적용해보면서 우리는 스스로에게 이렇게 물어볼 수 있을 것입니다. 강박감 가운데 하루 종일 소셜 네트워크를 확인하고 있지 않은가? 그것이 우리가 진정 바라는 것들에 대해 어떤 답을 주는가? 온라인에서 읽고 보는 것들이 분별 있는 삶에 어떤 도움이 되는가?(16-21절), 아니면 거기서 험담이나 중상, 물질주의, 성적 타락 같이 쓰레기 같은 것들을 취하고 있지는 않은가?

성령님의 역사하심에 순복할 때 우리의 마음은 “참되며 경건하며 옳으며 정결하며 사랑 받을 만하며 칭찬 받을 만한”(빌립보서 4:8) 것들로 채워질 것입니다. 우리는 하나님의 지혜로 그분을 영화롭게 하는 좋은 선택들을 할 수 있습니다.

Is There Wi-Fi?

As I was preparing to go on a mission trip with some young people, the most frequently asked question was, “Is there Wi-Fi?” And I assured them there would be. So just imagine the wails and groans one night when the Wi-Fi was down!

Many of us become anxious when we’re separated from our smartphones. And when we do have our iPhones or Androids in our hands, we can be fixated on our screens.

Like many things, the internet and all that it allows us to access can become either a distraction or a blessing. It depends on what we do with it. In Proverbs we read, “A wise person is hungry for knowledge, while the fool feeds on trash” (15:14 nlt).

Applying the wisdom of God’s Word to life, we can ask ourselves: Do we check our social networks compulsively throughout the day? What does that say about the things we hunger for? And do the things we read or view online encourage sensible living (vv. 16–21), or are we feeding on trash—gossip, slander, materialism, or sexual impurity?

As we yield to the work of the Holy Spirit, we can fill our minds with things that are “true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable” (Philippians 4:8 nlt). By God’s wisdom we can make good choices that honor Him. POH FANG CHIA

우리의 이름을 아시는 주님

뉴욕에 있는 국립 9.11 추모공원에 갔을 때 빛이 반사되는 두 개의 연못 가운데 하나를 먼저 사진에 담았습니다. 이 쌍둥이 연못 주위에는 세계무역센터가 공격 받았을 때 거기서 죽은 3천명에 가까운 사람들의 이름이 동판에 새겨져 있습니다. 나중에 사진을 좀 더 자세히 들여다보다가 어느 이름 위에 올려진 한 여인의 손에 나의 시선이 멈추었습니다. 많은 사람들이 이곳에 와서 이름을 만지며 그들이 사랑했던 사람을 기억합니다.

이사야 선지자는 하나님의 백성들에게 그들은 하나님에게서 여러 번 돌아섰지만 하나님은 변함없이 그들을 사랑하고 염려 하셨다는 것을 상기시켜주었습니다. 주님은 말씀하셨습니다. “너는 두려워하지 말라 내가 너를 구속하였고 내가 너를 지명하여 불렀나니 너는 내 것이라” (이사야 43:1).

시편 23편에서 다윗은 이렇게 기록했습니다. “내가 사망의 음침한 골짜기로 다닐지라도 해를 두려워하지 않을 것은 주께서 나와 함께 하심이라......내 평생에 선하심과 인자하심이 반드시 나를 따르리니 내가 여호와의 집에 영원히 살리로다”(4,6절).

하나님은 우리를 결코 잊지 않으십니다. 우리가 어디에 있든지, 어떤 상황에 있든지 하나님은 우리의 이름을 아시며 한결같은 사랑으로 우리를 붙들고 계십니다.

He Knows Our Names

During a visit to the National September 11 Memorial in New York City, I quickly photographed one of the twin reflecting pools. Around these two pools, the names of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the World Trade Center attacks are etched into bronze panels. Later, while looking more closely at the photo, my eyes were drawn to the hand of a woman resting on a name. Many people come to this place to touch a name and remember someone they loved.

The prophet Isaiah reminded God’s people of His unfailing love and concern for them, even though they had often turned away from Him. The Lord said, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1).

In the 23rd Psalm, David wrote, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley [the valley of the shadow of death], I will fear no evil, for you are with me . . . . Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (vv. 4, 6).

God never forgets us. No matter where we are or whatever our situation, He knows our names and holds us fast in His unfailing love. DAVID C. MCCASLAND

굳게 서기

꽁꽁 얼어붙은 어느 추운 겨울날이었습니다. 나는 따뜻한 자동차에서 나와 따뜻한 건물로 들어갈 생각을 하고 있었습니다. 그러나 나는 바로 땅바닥에 넘어져 무릎은 안쪽으로 정강이는 바깥쪽으로 꺾여버렸습니다. 뼈는 부러지지 않았지만 너무 아팠습니다. 통증은 시간이 갈수록 더 심해졌고 완전히 낫는데 몇 주나 걸렸습니다.

우리 중에 한번도 넘어지지 않은 사람이 누가 있을까요? 우리의 발을 누군가가, 또는 무엇인가가 항상 지켜준다면 얼마나 좋을까요? 물리적으로는 그와 같은 확실한 보장은 없지만, 이 세상에서 예수님을 영화롭게 하고 저 세상에서 그분 앞에 기쁨으로 서기 위해 우리가 힘을 다할 때 우리를 돕기 위해 언제나 준비하고 있는 주님이 계십니다.

우리는 삶 속에서 우리의 관심을 분산시키고, 혼동케 하며, 우리를 얽매려 하는 유혹(그리고 심지어 거짓 가르침)들을 매일 접합니다. 우리가 이 세상에 살면서 스스로 설 수 있는 것은 근본적으로 우리 자신의 노력으로 된 것이 아닙니다. 우리가 홧김에 나오려는 말을 진정시킬 때, 거짓말하지 않고 정직을 택할 때, 증오보다 사랑을 선택할 때, 거짓보다 진실을 선택할 때 우리를 바로 서게 하시는 하나님의 능력을 경험하게 되니(유다서 1:24) 얼마나 든든한지 모릅니다. 그리고 예수님이 다시 오실 때 우리가 하나님 앞에서 인정받게 되면 하나님의 지켜주시는 그 은혜를 노래하는 지금의 찬양은 영원히 울려퍼질 것입니다(25절).

How to Stand Firm

It was a cold, icy winter’s day, and my mind was focused on getting from my warm vehicle to a warm building. The next thing I knew I was on the ground, my knees turned inward and my lower legs turned outward. Nothing was broken, but I was in pain. The pain would get worse as time went by and it would be weeks before I was whole again.

Who among us hasn’t taken a spill of some sort? Wouldn’t it be nice to have something or someone to keep us on our feet all the time? While there are no guarantees of surefootedness in the physical sense, there is One who stands ready to assist us in our quest to honor Christ in this life and prepare us to stand joyfully before Him in the next.

Every day we face temptations (and even false teachings) that seek to divert us, confuse us, and entangle us. Yet, it’s not ultimately through our own efforts that we remain on our feet as we walk in this world. How assuring to know that when we hold our peace when tempted to speak angrily, to opt for honesty over deceit, to choose love over hate, or to select truth over error—we experience God’s power to keep us standing (Jude 1:24). And when we appear approved before God when Christ returns, the praise that we offer now for His sustaining grace will echo throughout eternity (v. 25). ARTHUR JACKSON

그리스도의 향기를 풍기는 사람들

무덥고 먼지가 날리던 어느 날, ‘밥’은 집에서 멀리 떨어진 도시에 도착해 버스에서 내렸습니다. 그는 긴 여행으로 지쳐 있었기에, 친구가 소개해준 그 도시에 사는 친구들과 함께 저녁식사를 할 수 있어서 다행이라고 생각했습니다. 그들이 반가이 맞아주어서 그는 금방 편안하게 느끼게 되었습니다. 마치 자기 집에 있는 것 같은 편안함과 안도감, 그리고 귀하게 여김 받는 것을 느꼈습니다.

나중에 ‘밥’은 처음 가 본 곳에서 어떻게 그런 평안함을 느낄 수 있었을까 생각하다가 고린도후서에서 그 해답을 찾게 되었습니다. 바울 사도는 하나님을 따르는 사람들을 “그리스도의 향기”를 지닌 사람들이라고 묘사합니다. “바로 그거야!”하고 ‘밥’은 깨달았습니다. 그를 초대한 친구들에게서 그리스도의 향기가 났던 것입니다.

하나님께서 그의 백성들을 이끌어 하나님의 진리의 향기를 풍기며 그리스도의 “승리의 행진”을 하게 하신다고 한 바울의 말은 고대시대에 행했던 하나의 관행을 두고 한 말입니다. 전쟁에서 승리한 군대는 거리를 행진하면서 향을 피우곤 했는데, 지지자들에게 그 냄새는 큰 기쁨을 가져다주었습니다. 마찬가지로 바울은 하나님의 사람들은 믿는 사람들에게 기쁨의 향기를 가져다준다고 하였습니다. 그것은 우리가 만들어내는 것이 아니라 하나님께서 우리를 인도하여 하나님에 대한 지식을 전파하게 하실 때 주시는 것입니다.

‘밥’은 나의 아버지입니다. 그리고 그 여행은 40여 년 전 어느 먼 곳에서 있었던 일인데 아버지는 아직도 잊지 않고 계십니다. 아버지는 그리스도의 향기를 풍겼던 사람들에 대해 지금도 말씀하고 계십니다.

They Smelled Like Christ

Hot and dusty, Bob dismounted from the bus he had ridden to a city far from home. He was tired from a long day of travel and grateful that he would be able to have dinner with friends of friends who lived in the area. They welcomed him in, and he immediately felt a sense of peace. He felt at home, comfortable, safe, and valued.

Later, wondering why he had felt such peace in an unfamiliar place, Bob found an answer in 2 Corinthians. The apostle Paul describes people who follow God as having the “pleasing aroma of Christ.” “That’s exactly it!” Bob said to himself. His hosts had “smelled like” Christ.

When Paul says that God leads His people in Christ’s “triumphal procession” spreading the fragrance of His truth, he’s referring to a practice in the ancient world. Victorious armies would burn incense as they marched through the streets. For their supporters, the smell brought joy. In the same way, Paul says the people of God carry a pleasing fragrance to those who believe. It isn’t something we create on our own but something God gives as He leads us in spreading the knowledge of Him.

Bob is my dad, and that trip to a faraway town took place more than forty years ago, but he’s never forgotten it. He’s still telling the story of the people who smelled like Christ. AMY PETERSON

하나님께 진실하기

나는 머리를 숙여 눈을 감고 손 모아 기도하기 시작합니다. “사랑하는 주님, 오늘 주님 앞에 주님의 자녀로서 나아옵니다. 주님의 능력과 선하심을 믿사오며.......” 그러다 갑자기 눈이 번쩍 떠집니다. 아들의 역사 과제물 마감일이 내일인데 아직 끝내지 못한 것이 생각납니다. 아들이 방과 후에 농구 경기가 있는 것이 생각나면서 밤 열두 시까지 숙제를 하고 있을 아들의 모습을 상상합니다. 그러다가 이로 인해 피곤해진 아들이 독감에 걸리지나 않을까 하는 걱정을 하기에 이릅니다.

C. S. 루이스는 그의 책 ‘스크루테이프의 편지’에서 기도에 집중하지 못하게 하는 것들에 대해 썼습니다. 우리는 마음이 왔다 갔다 할 때 대개 의지적으로 처음 하던 기도로 돌아가려 한다고 합니다. 그렇지만 루이스는 그러는 것보다 “집중을 못하게 하는 그 방해요소들이 바로 지금의 문제이며 그것을 하나님 앞에 가지고 나아가 첫 번째 기도 제목으로 삼는 것”이 더 좋은 방법이라고 결론을 내립니다.

우리의 기도를 방해하는 끊임없는 염려나 혹 나쁜 생각까지도 하나님과 나누는 대화의 중심이 될 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리와 대화할 때 우리가 진실하기를 원하시고 우리의 깊은 염려나 두려움, 힘겨운 것들을 솔직히 내어놓기를 원하십니다. 그분은 우리가 무슨 말을 해도 놀라지 않으십니다. 우리에 대한 하나님의 관심은 우리의 친한 친구가 보여주는 관심과 유사합니다. 그래서 우리의 모든 근심 걱정을 우리를 돌보시는 하나님께 맡기라고 하는 것입니다(베드로전서 5:7).

Being Real with God

I bow my head, close my eyes, lace my fingers together and begin to pray. “Dear Lord, I’m coming to you today as your child. I recognize your power and goodness. . .” Suddenly, my eyes snap open. I remember that my son hasn’t finished his history project, which is due the next day. I recall that he has an after-school basketball game, and I imagine him awake until midnight finishing his schoolwork. This leads me to worry that his fatigue will put him at risk for the flu!

C. S. Lewis wrote about distractions during prayer in his book The Screwtape Letters. He noted that when our minds wander, we tend to use willpower to steer ourselves back to our original prayer. Lewis concluded, though, that it was better to accept “the distraction as [our] present problem and [lay] that before [God] and make it the main theme of [our] prayers.”

A persistent worry or even a sinful thought that disrupts a prayer may become the centerpiece of our discussion with God. God wants us to be real as we talk with Him and open up about our deepest concerns, fears, and struggles. He is not surprised by anything we mention. His interest in us is like the attention we would receive from a close friend. That’s why we’re encouraged to give all of our worries and cares to God—because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). 변함없는 사랑

나는 고등학교 시절 학교 테니스 대표팀에 속해 있었고, 실력을 키우기 위해 집에서 두 블록 떨어진 곳에 있는 4개의 시멘트 코트에서 십대의 많은 시간을 보냈습니다.

지난번 그 도시를 방문했을 때 나는 다른 사람들이 테니스 치는 것을 보면서 잠시나마 과거를 회상해보려고 먼저 그 코트로 갔습니다. 그러나 내 기억에 생생한 옛 테니스코트는 간 곳이 없었고, 그 자리엔 빈 공터에 간간히 잡초들만 바람에 조용히 흔들리고 있었습니다.

그날 오후의 일은 내 마음속에 인생의 무상함에 대한 생각이 깊이 자리잡는 계기가 되었습니다. 학생 시절 내 젊음을 불태웠던 장소 중 하나가 이제 더 이상 존재하지 않게 되었으니까요! 나중에 그 일을 생각해보다가 다윗이 노년에 말한 진리를 이해하게 되었습니다. “인생은 그 날이 풀과 같으며 그 영화가 들의 꽃과 같도다 그것은 바람이 지나면 없어지나니 그곳이 다시 알지 못하거니와 여호와의 인자하심은 자기를 경외하는 자에게 영원부터 영원까지 이르며”(시편 103:15-17).

우리는 늙어가고 우리 주위의 세상은 변하지만 하나님의 사랑은 변하지 않습니다. 하나님은 그분께 의지하는 사람들을 돌보신다는 것을 우리는 언제나 신뢰할 수 있습니다.

Unchanging Love

When I was in high school I played on the varsity tennis team. I spent many hours of my teenage years trying to improve my skills on four concrete courts located just two blocks from my home.

The last time I visited that city, one of the first things I did was drive to the tennis courts, hoping to watch others play and reminisce for a moment. But the old courts, so familiar to my memory, were nowhere to be seen. In their place was a vacant field, inhabited only by an occasional weed waving silently in the breeze.

That afternoon remains in my mind as a stark reminder of the brevity of life. One of the places where I expended some of my best youthful strength no longer existed! Reflecting on that experience later brought me to this truth, expressed by an aging King David: “The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him” (Psalm 103:15–17). JAMES BANKS

헤치고 나아가기

보디빌딩 대회에 나가는 사람들은 엄격한 훈련과정을 거칩니다. 처음 몇 달은 근육과 힘을 키우는데 집중합니다. 그러다 시합 날짜가 가까워지면 근육을 가리는 지방을 없애는데 집중합니다. 대회 전 며칠 동안은 근육 조직이 잘 보이게 하기 위해 평상시보다 물을 적게 마십니다. 대회 출전자들은 영양 섭취를 줄였기 때문에 시합 날 힘이 넘쳐 보여도 사실은 그날이 가장 약한 때입니다
.
역대하 20장에서 우리는 이와는 정반대의 현실을 봅니다. 하나님의 힘을 경험하기 위해서 자신의 약함을 인정하는 것입니다. “큰 무리가 왕을 치러 오고 있습니다.”라고 백성들이 여호사밧 왕에게 말했습니다. 그러자 “그는 온 유다 사람에게 금식할 것을 공포하고”(3절) 그를 비롯해서 모든 백성들이 금식하도록 했습니다. 그런 다음 그들은 하나님께 도움을 간구했습니다. 마침내 군대를 소집한 여호사밧은 하나님을 찬양하는 사람들을 군대의 앞에 세웠습니다(21절). 그들이 찬송하기 시작하자 “여호와께서 복병을 두어......유다를 치러온 그들을 치게 하시므로 그들이 패하였습니다” (22절).

여호사밧의 결정은 하나님에 대한 깊은 믿음을 보여주었습니다. 그는 의도적으로 자신의 인간적인 힘이나 군대의 용맹에 의존하지 않고 하나님께 의지했습니다. 우리도 당면한 어려움을 우리 힘으로 헤쳐나아가기보다는 하나님께 의지하여 하나님이 우리의 힘이 되시도록 할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Muscling Through

Competitive bodybuilders put themselves through a rigorous training cycle. During the initial months, they emphasize gaining size and strength. As the competition nears, the focus shifts to losing any fat that hides the muscle. In the final days before the competition, they consume less water than normal so their muscle tissue is easily visible. Because of the reduced consumption of nourishment, the competitors are actually at their weakest on the day of competition, despite appearing strong.

In 2 Chronicles 20, we read of the opposite reality: acknowledging weakness in order to experience God’s strength. “A vast army is coming against you,” people told King Jehoshaphat. So “he proclaimed a fast for all Judah” (V. 3), depriving himself and all his people of nourishment. Then they asked God for help. When he finally mustered his military, Jehoshaphat placed singers who praised God at the front of his army (V. 21). As they began to sing, the Lord “set ambushes against the men . . . who were invading Judah, and they were defeated” (V. 22).

Jehoshaphat’s decision demonstrated deep faith in God. He purposefully chose not to depend on his own human and military prowess but instead to lean on God. Rather than trying to muscle our way through the trials we face, may we turn to Him and allow Him to be our strength. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

우리 동네에는 집집마다 높은 콘크리트 벽이 둘려 있습니다. 담벼락 위에는 전기가 흐르는 철조망을 설치한 곳도 많습니다. 물론 도둑이 들지 못하게 하기 위해서 입니다.

자주 정전이 되는 것도 우리 동네의 문제입니다. 정전이 되면 정문에 있는 초인종이 소용없게 됩니다. 정전 중에는 높은 담 때문에 찾아오는 사람들이 뜨거운 햇빛이나 쏟아지는 비를 피하지 못하게 됩니다. 하지만 초인종이 작동되더라도 찾아온 사람이 누구냐에 따라 들어갈 수도 있고 못 들어갈 수도 있습니다. 담을 세운 뜻은 좋지만 사람을 차별하는 담벼락이 되기도 합니다. 분명히 도둑이 아닌데도 말입니다.

우물가에서 예수님을 만난 사마리아 여인도 이와 비슷하게 차별로 인한 어려움을 겪었습니다. 당시 유대인들은 사마리아인들과 전혀 상종하지 않았습니다. 예수님이 사마리아 여인에게 물을 좀 달라 하시자 여인은 이렇게 말했습니다. “당신은 유대인으로서 어찌하여 사마리아 여자인 나에게 물을 달라 하나이까”(요한복음 4:9). 그러나 이 여인은 예수님께 마음을 열기 시작하면서 인생이 바뀌는 경험을 하게 되고 자신은 물론 이웃에게까지 긍정적인 변화를 가져왔습니다(39-42절). 예수님이 적개심과 편애의 벽을 무너뜨리는 다리가 되신 것입니다.

차별하려는 마음은 누구에게나 있는 것이기에 우리는 그것을 염두에 두고 살아야 합니다. 예수님이 보여주신 것처럼 우리도 국적이나 사회적 신분, 평판에 관계없이 모든 사람들에게 다가가야 합니다. 예수님은 다리를 놓으려고 오셨습니다.

Building Bridges

In our neighborhood, high concrete walls surround our homes. Many of these walls are enhanced with electric barbed wires lining the top. The purpose? To ward off robbers.

Frequent power outages are also a problem in our community. These outages render the front gate-bell useless. Because of the wall, a visitor may be kept out in the scorching sun or torrential rain during these outages. Yet even when the gate-bell works, to admit the visitor might depend on who they are. Our fence-walls serve a good purpose, but they can become walls of discrimination—even when the visitor is obviously not an intruder.

The Samaritan woman whom Jesus met at the well had a similar difficulty with discrimination. The Jews had nothing to do with Samaritans. When Jesus asked her for a drink, she said, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (JOHN 4:9). As she began to open up to Jesus, she had a life-changing experience that positively affected her and her neighbors (VV. 39–42). Jesus became the bridge that broke the wall of hostility and favoritism.

The lure to discriminate is real, and we need to identify it in our lives. As Jesus showed us, we can reach out to all people regardless of nationality, social status, or reputation. He came to build bridges. LAWRENCE DARMANI

별을 너머

2011년 미항공우주국이 우주탐사를 시작한지 30주년을 맞이했습니다. 그 30년 동안 355명이 넘는 사람들이 우주왕복선을 타고 우주에 다녀왔고, 또 국제 우주정거장 설립에 참여했습니다. 미항공우주국은 그동안 사용했던 다섯 개의 우주왕복선을 퇴역시키고, 이제 우주의 아주 깊숙한 곳을 탐사하기로 목표를 바꾸었습니다.

인류는 이처럼 광대한 우주를 연구하기 위해 엄청난 시간과 자원을 투자해왔으며 때로는 우주인들의 귀한 목숨을 희생하기도 했습니다. 그러나 하나님의 장엄하심을 증명하는 이 우주는 우리가 측량할 수 없을 만큼 뻗어 있습니다.

별들의 수효대로 이름을 아시는(이사야 40:26), 온 우주의 창조주이자 그 우주를 운행하시는 주님을 생각해볼 때 시편을 쓴 다윗이 왜 그토록 하나님의 위대하심을 찬양했는지 이해할 수 있습니다(시편 8:1). “주께서 베풀어 두신 달과 별들”(3절)에는 주님의 손자국이 남아 있습니다. 하늘과 땅을 창조하신 하나님은 위에서 모든 것들을 다스리시지만, 또한 그분의 귀한 자녀들 곁에 가까이 계시며 일일이 친밀하게 돌보십니다 (4절). 하나님은 사랑으로 우리에게 하나님이 맡겨주신 이 세상을 돌보고 탐구할 수 있는 큰 능력과 책임과 특권을 주셨습니다(5-8절).

창조주 하나님은 우리가 밤하늘을 수놓는 무수한 별들을 탐구하면서 열정과 끈기를 가지고 하나님을 찾으라고 하십니다. 하나님은 우리의 입술에서 나오는 모든 기도와 찬양을 들으십니다.

Beyond the Stars

In 2011, the National Aeronautics and Space Association celebrated thirty years of space research. In those three decades, shuttles carried more than 355 people into space and helped construct the International Space Station. After retiring five shuttles, NASA has now shifted its focus to deep space exploration.

The human race has invested massive amounts of time and money, with some astronauts even sacrificing their lives, to study the immensity of the universe. Yet the evidence of God’s majesty stretches far beyond what we can measure.

When we consider the Sculptor and Sustainer of the universe who knows each star by name (ISAIAH 40:26), we can understand why the psalmist David praises His greatness (PSALM 8:1). The Lord’s fingerprints are on “the moon and the stars, which [He] set in place” (V. 3). The Maker of the heavens and the earth reigns above all, yet He remains near all His beloved children, caring for each intimately and personally (V. 4). In love, God gives us great power, responsibility, and the privilege to care for and explore the world He’s entrusted to us (VV. 5–8).

As we study our star-spattered night skies, our Creator invites us to seek Him with passion and persistence. He hears every prayer and song of praise flowing from our lips. XOCHITL DIXON

본향 길을 찾아서

때로는 사는 것이 너무 힘들어 그저 막막하고 한없이 캄캄하게만 느껴질 때가 있습니다. 우리 가족이 그런 처지에 있던 어느 날 아침, 아내가 경건의 시간을 가지면서 얻은 교훈을 이렇게 말했습니다. “제 생각에 하나님은 ‘우리가 어려울 때 배운 것들을 편안해진 후에 잊지 말라’고 하시는 것 같아요.”

바울은 동역자들과 함께 아시아에서 겪은 고난들을 이야기하면서 고린도의 신자들에게 이와 똑같은 생각을 전하고 있습니다(고린도후서 1장). 바울은 하나님이 어떻게 우리를 가장 힘든 순간에서 건져내실 수 있는지 고린도의 신자들이 이해하기를 원했습니다. 그는 우리가 위로를 받았으니 우리도 이제 다른 사람들을 위로할 수 있다고 말합니다(4절). 바울과 그의 동역자들은 고난 가운데 배웠던 것들을 가지고 비슷한 어려움에 처한 고린도의 신자들을 위로하고 충고하는데 사용할 수 있었습니다. 우리가 듣고자 하면 하나님은 우리에게도 가르쳐 주십니다. 주님은 우리를 고난에서 구하셔서 우리가 고난 중에 배운 것들을 다른 사람들을 보살필 때 사용할 수 있도록 가르쳐주십니다.

지금 고난 중에 있습니까? 바울의 말과 경험에서 힘을 얻으십시오. 하나님이 지금 당신의 발걸음을 인도하시며, 또 당신과 비슷한 상황에 있는 다른 사람들에게 나눌 수 있게 고난의 진정한 의미를 당신 마음에 새기고 계시다는 것을 믿으십시오. 한번 경험해본 당신은 이제 본향으로 향하는 길도 알게 되었습니다.

Finding the Way Home

Sometimes this journey through life can be so difficult that we’re simply overwhelmed, and it seems there’s no end to the darkness. During such a time in our own family’s life, my wife emerged one morning from her quiet time with a new lesson learned. “I think God wants us not to forget in the light what we’re learning in this darkness. ”

Paul writes this same thought to the Corinthians (2 CORINTHIANS 1), after describing the terrible difficulties he and his team endured in Asia. Paul wants the Corinthians to understand how God can redeem even our darkest moments. We’re comforted, he says, so we may learn how to comfort others (V. 4). Paul and his team were learning things from God during their trials that they could use to comfort and advise the Corinthians when they faced similar difficulties. And God does that for us as well, if we’re willing to listen. He will redeem our trials by teaching us how to use what we’ve learned in them to minister to others.

Are you in the darkness now? Be encouraged by Paul’s words and experience. Trust that God is right now directing your steps and that He’s also stamping His truths on your heart so you can share them with others who are in similar circumstances. You’ve been there before, and you know the way home. RANDY KILGORE
