위로자의 축복

2010년 영화 ‘왕의 연설’은 형이 왕위를 포기하면서 예기치 않게 영국의 왕이 된 조지 6세의 이야기를 다루고 있습니다. 제2차 세계대전이 일어나기 직전이었던 당시에 라디오 방송의 영향력이 커져가는 상황에서 정부 관료들은 연설을 잘하는 지도자를 원했습니다. 그러나 조지 6세는 말을 더듬는 문제로 어려움을 겪고 있었습니다.

나는 특별히 영화에서 조지의 아내 엘리자베스를 묘사한 부분에 관심이 끌렸습니다. 조지가 언어 장애를 극복하기 위해 몸부림치는 동안 그녀는 줄곧 남편의 용기를 북돋워주었습니다. 아내의 변함없는 헌신으로 조지는 장애를 극복하고 전쟁 중에 나라를 훌륭하게 통치할 수 있었습니다.

성경에는 어려운 상황 속에서 매우 효과적인 도움과 용기를 준 사람들의 이야기가 강조되어 있습니다. 모세는 이스라엘의 전투 중에 아론과 훌의 도움을 받았고(출애굽기 17:8-16), 엘리사벳은 친척인 마리아가 임신했을 때 힘이 되어주었습니다(누가복음 1:42-45).

바울은 회심 후 바나바의 도움이 필요했습니다. 바나바라는 이름의 문자적인 뜻은 ‘격려의 아들’입니다. 예수님의 제자들이 바울 만나기를 두려워할 때 바나바가 나서서 자신의 이름을 걸고 바울을 보증해주었습니다(사도행전 9:27). 바울이 그리스도인들의 공동체로부터 환영을 받는데에는 바나바의 지지가 반드시 필요했습니다. 나중에 바나바는 바울의 동역자로 선교 여행과 전도를 함께 했습니다 (사도행전 14장). 많은 위험이 있었지만 그들은 복음을 전하기 위해 함께 사역했습니다.

예수님을 믿는 사람들은 지금도 “피차 권면하고 서로 덕을 세우라” (데살로니가전서 5:11)고 부름 받고 있습니다. 우리 모두 다른 사람들을, 특히 힘든 상황에 있을 때 그들을 더욱 돕고 권면하는데 힘쓸 수 있기를 바랍니다.

The Blessing of Encouragers

The 2010 movie The King’s Speech tells the story of England’s King George VI, who unexpectedly became monarch when his brother abandoned the throne. With the country on the brink of World War II, government officials wanted a well-spoken leader because of the increasingly influential role of radio. King George VI, however, struggled with a stuttering problem.

I was especially drawn to the film’s portrayal of George’s wife, Elizabeth. Throughout his struggle to overcome his speech difficulty, she was his constant source of encouragement. Her steadfast devotion provided the support he needed to overcome his challenge and rule well during the war.

The Bible highlights the stories of encouragers who gave powerful assistance during challenging circumstances. Moses had Aaron and Hur’s support during Israel’s battles (Exodus 17:8–16). Elizabeth encouraged her pregnant relative Mary (Luke 1:42–45).
After his conversion, Paul needed the support of Barnabas, whose name literally means “son of encouragement.” When the disciples were fearful of Paul, Barnabas, at the risk of his own reputation, vouched for him (Acts 9:27). His endorsement was essential to Paul being welcomed by the Christian community. Barnabas later served as Paul’s traveling and preaching companion (Acts 14). Despite the dangers, they worked together to proclaim the gospel.

Believers in Jesus are still called to “encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11). May we be eager to offer encouragement to help support others, especially as they face difficult circumstances. LISA SAMRA

예상치 못한 방법

1986년 영국의 저지 동물원에서 다섯 살짜리 아이 레반 메릿이 약 6미터 아래에 있는 고릴라 우리 안으로 떨어졌습니다. 부모와 관람객들이 도와달라고 부르짖고 있을 때 ‘잠보’ 라는 이름의 완전히 자란 수컷 고릴라가 꼼짝 못하고 있는 그 아이와 다른 여러 마리의 고릴라 사이에 들어서더니 아이의 등을 쓰다듬어주기 시작했습니다. 레반이 울기 시작하자 잠보는 다른 고릴라들을 데리고 그들의 우리 안으로 들어갔습니다. 그 사이 사육사들과 구급차 운전자가 들어가 그 소년을 구출할 수 있었습니다. 30여년이 지난 후에도 레반은 아직도 그 순하고 덩치 큰 고릴라 잠보에 대해 이야기합니다. 예상치 못한 놀라운 행동을 보였던 잠보는 레반의 수호천사였으며 고릴라에 대한 그의 인식을 영원히 바꾸어놓았습니다.

엘리야는 하나님께서 어떤 특정한 방식으로 행하실 것이라고 기대했을지 모르지만, 모든 신들의 신 되시는 하나님은 바위를 부수는 바람과 강력한 지진과 맹렬히 타오르는 불을 사용하셔서 주의 선지자 엘리야에게 하나님의 생각은 예상할 수 없다는 것을 보여주셨습니다. 그러고 난 후에 부드러운 속삭임으로 하나님의 마음을 보여주시고 자신의 임재를 나타내셨습니다(열왕기상 19:11-12).

엘리야는 이전에 하나님의 능력을 보았습니다(18:38-39). 그러나 그는 가장 위대하고 무서운 신들보다 더 뛰어나신 분으로 알려지기를 원하시는 하나님을 완전히 이해하지 못했습니다(19:10,14).

하나님의 그 조용한 속삭임은 “나를 본 자는 아버지를 보았다” (요한복음 14:9)라고 말씀하신 강하면서도 온유하신 예수님에게서 마침내 완전한 의미를 찾게 되었습니다. 그 다음, 예수님은 조용히 나무에 못

Unexpected Ways

In 1986, five-year-old Levan Merritt fell twenty feet into the gorilla enclosure of England’s Jersey zoo. As parents and onlookers cried out for help, a full-grown male silverback, named Jambo, placed himself between the motionless boy and several other gorillas. Then he began to gently stroke the child’s back. When Levan began to cry, Jambo led the other gorillas into their own enclosure as zoo-keepers and an ambulance driver came to the rescue. More than thirty years later Levan still talks about Jambo the gentle giant—his guardian angel who had acted in a shockingly unexpected way, changing his perception of gorillas forever.

Elijah may have expected God to act in certain ways, but the God of gods used a rock-shattering wind, a powerful earthquake, and raging fire to show His prophet how not to think of Him. Then He used a gentle whisper to show His heart and to express His presence (1 Kings 19:11–12).

Elijah had seen God’s power before (18:38–39). But he didn’t fully understand the One who wants to be known as more than the greatest and most fearsome of gods (19:10, 14).

Eventually, that quiet whisper found fullness of meaning in the powerful gentleness of Jesus, who said, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Then He quietly allowed Himself to be nailed to a tree—an unexpected, compassionate act by the great God who loves us. MART DEHAAN

소망이 있는 곳

엘리자베스는 약물 중독으로 오랫동안 힘들어했는데 회복이 되자 그 보답으로 다른 사람들을 돕고 싶어 했습니다. 그래서 메모를 써서 익명으로 도시 전역에 배포하기 시작했습니다. 자동차 앞유리 와이퍼 밑에 끼워 넣기도 하고 공원의 기둥에 붙여놓기도 했습니다. 전에는 희망이 어디에 있는지 찾아다녔던 그녀가 이제는 다른 사람들이 희망을 찾을 수 있도록 표지를 남기고 다닙니다. 메모들 중 하나는 이렇게 끝맺고 있습니다. “많이 사랑합니다. 희망 드림.”

사랑과 함께 오는 희망. 예수님이 주시는 것이 바로 그것입니다. 예수님은 우리에게 매일 그분의 사랑을 전해주시고 또 그러한 희망으로 우리를 강건하게 해주십니다. 예수님의 사랑은 조금씩 주어지지 않고 그분의 마음속에서 막힘없이 흘러나와 우리 마음속으로 풍성하게 쏟아져 들어옵니다. “이 희망은 우리를 실망시키지 않습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 성령을 통하여 그의 사랑을 우리 마음속에 부어 주셨기 때문입니다”(로마서 5:5, 새번역). 예수님은 시련을 사용하여 우리의 인내와 품성을 계발하시며 우리에게 만족스럽고 희망으로 가득 찬 삶을 가져다주시기를 원하십니다(3-4절). 그리고 우리가 주님에게서 멀리 떨어져 있을 때에도 여전히 우리를 사랑하십니다(6-8절).

소망이 어디에 있는지 찾고 있습니까? 주님은 우리가 주님과의 관계 속에서 성장하기를 권하시면서 사랑과 함께 소망을 베풀어주십니다. 풍성한 삶을 향한 우리의 소망은 주님의 변치 않는 사랑에 기반을 두고 있습니다.

Where to Find Hope

Elizabeth struggled for a long time with drug addiction, and when she recovered wanted to help others in return. So she started writing notes and anonymously placing them throughout her city. Elizabeth tucks these notes under car windshield wipers and tacks them on poles in parks. She used to look for signs of hope; now she leaves them for others to find. One of her notes concluded with these words: “Much love. Hope sent.”

Hope with love—that’s what Jesus gives. He brings us His love with each new day and strengthens us with that hope. His love is not rationed out to us drop by drop but flows out of His heart freely and is poured lavishly into ours: “We know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love” (Romans 5:5 nlt). He desires to use the hard times to develop perseverance and character and bring us a satisfying, hope-filled life (vv. 3–4). And even when we’re far from Him, He still loves us (vv. 6–8).

Are you looking for signs of hope? The Lord gives hope with love through inviting us to grow in a relationship with Him. Our hope for a fulfilling life is anchored in His unfailing love. ANNE CETAS

적합한 때

나는 대학으로 가는 첫째 아이를 위해 어제 비행기표를 샀습니다. 비행기편을 고르면서 컴퓨터의 키보드에 쏟은 나의 눈물을 생각하면 그 키보드가 여전히 작동하고 있는 것이 놀랍습니다. 18년 동안 매일 딸과 같이 즐겁게 보냈기에 이제 떠난다고 생각하니 슬퍼졌습니다. 그러나 딸이 그립다는 이유로 아이 앞에 펼쳐져 있는 기회를 빼앗지는 않을 것입니다. 딸의 인생에서 이 시점은 그 아이가 성인의 세계를 발견하고 이 나라의 다른 곳도 탐험해볼 새로운 여정에 들어서기에 적절한 시기입니다.

자식을 양육하는 시절이 지나면 또 다른 시절이 시작됩니다. 그것은 분명 새로운 도전과 새로운 기쁨을 함께 가져다줄 것입니다. 이스라엘의 세 번째 왕 솔로몬은 하나님이 “범사에 기한이 있고 천하만사가 다 때가 있게”(전도서 3:1) 하셨다고 기록하였습니다. 우리 인간들은 삶에서 겪는 여러 가지 일들을 좋든 싫든 거의 조절할 수 없습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그분의 능하신 능력으로 “모든 것을 때를 따라 아름답게”(11절) 하십니다.

마음의 고통이 가득할 때에도 우리는 하나님이 그런 가운데 때가 되면 뭔가 좋은 것을 가져다주신다는 것을 믿을 수 있습니다. 우리의 안락함과 기쁨은 오기도 하고 가기도 하겠지만 하나님의 일하심은 “영원히 있을 것입니다”(14절). 우리는 매 시절 다 기뻐하지 못할 수도 있고 때로는 매우 힘들 때도 있을 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 그 모든 시절을 아름답게 하십니다.

A Fitting Time

Yesterday I purchased an airline ticket to send my firstborn child to college. I’m surprised the keyboard on my computer still functions, given the waterworks my eyes unleashed on it during the flight selection process. I have so enjoyed my eighteen years of daily life with her that I am saddened by the prospect of her departure. Yet I wouldn’t rob her of the opportunity that lies ahead simply because I’ll miss her. At this juncture in her life, it is fitting for her to embark on a new journey to discover adulthood and explore another part of the country.

As this season of my parenting draws to a close, another one begins. It will undoubtedly bring both new challenges and new delights. Solomon, Israel’s third king, wrote that God appoints “a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). We humans have little control over the events of our lives—whether we view those events as favorable or not. But God, in His mighty power, makes “everything beautiful in its time” (v. 11).

In seasons of heartache, we can trust God to bring something good from them in time. Our comforts and joys may come and go, but God’s works “will endure forever” (v. 14). We may not relish every season—some are quite painful—yet He can bring beauty to them all. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

주님 손에 새겨짐

찰스 스펄전은 1800년대에 런던의 한 교회를 오래도록 섬기는 동안 하나님이 우리의 이름을 그분의 손바닥에 새기신다고 한 이사야 49장 16절의 깊은 의미에 대해 즐겨 설교했습니다. 그는 “이와 같은 구절은 수백 번이라도 설교할 가치가 있다!” 고 말했습니다. 이런 생각은 우리 마음에 새기고 또 새겨둘 만큼 중요합니다.

스펄전은 하나님이 그의 백성인 이스라엘 사람들과 한 약속과 십자가에서 우리를 위해 돌아가신 하나님의 아들 예수님을 멋지게 연결시킵니다. 스펄전은 말합니다. “주님의 손에 있는 그 상처는
무엇입니까?...... 사람들은 망치로 못을 쳐서 손에 새겼습니다. 주님의 백성들 이름이 그분의 손바닥에 진정 새겨질 수 있도록 주님은 십자가에 달리셔야만 했습니다.” 하나님이 그분의 손바닥에 그의 백성들을 새기겠다고 약속하신 것처럼, 예수님도 우리를 죄에서 해방시키기 위해 십자가에서 팔 벌려 손에 못을 받으셨습니다.

하나님이 우리를 잊으신 것은 아닌가 하는 생각이 들 때가 있다면 우리의 손바닥을 바라보고 하나님의 약속을 기억하면 됩니다. 하나님은 우리를 위해 그분의 손에 지울 수 없는 표시를 새기셨습니다. 하나님은 그만큼 우리를 사랑하십니다.

Engraved on His Hands

In Charles Spurgeon’s many years at his London church during the 1800s, he loved to preach on the riches of Isaiah 49:16, which says that God engraves us on the palms of His hands. He said, “Such a text as this is to be preached hundreds of times!” This thought is so precious that we can run over it in our minds again and again.

Spurgeon makes the wonderful connection between this promise of the Lord to His people, the Israelites, and God’s Son, Jesus, on the cross as He died for us. Spurgeon asked, “What are these wounds in Your hands? . . . The engraver’s tool was the nail, backed by the hammer. He must be fastened to the Cross, that His people might be truly engraved on the palms of His hands.” As the Lord promised to engrave His people on His palms, so Jesus stretched out His arms on the cross, receiving the nails in His hands so we could be free of our sins.

If and when we’re tempted to think that God has forgotten us, we only need to look at our palms and remember God’s promise. He has put indelible marks on His hands for us; He loves us that much. AMY BOUCHER PYE

사랑의 유산

증조할머니의 성경책을 뒤적이고 있는데 보물 같은 귀중한 것이 무릎에 떨어졌습니다. 그것은 작은 종이쪽지였는데 거기에는 어린아이의 글씨체로 이런 글이 쓰여 있었습니다. “심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있나니 천국이 그들의 것임이요 애통하는 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 위로를 받을 것임이요”(마태복음 5:3-4). 필기체로 삐뚤삐뚤하게 쓰인 글귀 옆에는 어머니의 흘려 쓴 서명이 있었습니다.

증조할머니는 손자들에게 종이에 성경구절을 써서 익히고 마음에 간직하게 하는 교육을 습관적으로 시키셨습니다. 그러나 이 성경구절의 뒤에는 눈물나는 사연이 있었습니다. 우리 할아버지는 어머니가 아주 어렸을 때 돌아가셨고, 어머니의 어린 동생(나의 삼촌)도 그 다음 몇 주 후에 돌아가셨습니다. 증조할머니는 이런 비극 가운데 어머니를 예수님께로 인도하여 그분만이 주실 수 있는 평안을 갖게 해주셨습니다.

바울은 디모데에게 이렇게 썼습니다. “이는 네 속에 거짓이 없는 믿음이 있음을 생각함이라 이 믿음은 먼저 네 외조모 로이스 네 어머니 유니게 속에 있더니 네 속에도 있는 줄을 확신하노라”(디모데후서 1:5). 믿음은 상속되는 것이 아니라 ‘같이 나누는 것’입니다. 디모데의 어머니와 할머니는 그들의 믿음을 ‘그와 함께 나누었고’, 그 결과 디모데도 믿음을 갖게 되었습니다.

우리와 가까운 사람들에게 예수님 안에서 소망을 가지라고 권면할 때 우리는 사랑의 유산을 전해주는 것입니다. 어머니는 간단한 쪽지 한 장에 증조할머니가 지니셨던 구주와 가족을 향한 사랑의 증거를 남기셨습니다. 아, 우리도 이렇게 다음 세대들과 주님을 함께 나눌 수 있다면!

Legacies of Love

I was paging through my great-grandmother’s Bible when a treasure fell into my lap. On a small scrap of paper, in a young child’s handwriting, were the words, “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:3–4 kjv). Scribbled beside those verses in wobbly cursive was my mother’s signature.

My great-grandmother had a habit of teaching her grandchildren to write out Scripture verses so they would learn them and take them to heart. But the story behind this verse brought tears to my eyes. My grandfather died when my mother was very young, and her little brother (my uncle) died just weeks later. It was in that tragic season that my great-grandmother pointed my mother to Jesus and the comfort only He can give.

Paul wrote Timothy, “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also” (2 Timothy 1:5). Faith isn’t inherited, but it is shared. Timothy’s mother and grandmother shared their faith with him, and he believed.

When we encourage those close to us to have hope in Jesus, we offer them a legacy of love. Through a simple note, my mother left evidence of my great-grandmother’s love for her Savior and her family. Oh, to share Him with those who come after us! JAMES BANKS

올바른 기도 방법

나는 매일 만져서 너덜너덜해진 기도일지에 기도제목들을 기록하고, 기도 하나하나가 어떻게 응답되었는지를 계속 점검하며, 찬양하면서 믿음으로 기도제목들을 새로 적어가는 사람들에게 찬사를 보냅니다. 나는 다른 사람들과 함께 모여 기도하고, 늘 무릎 꿇어 기도해서 침대 옆 카펫이 닳아버린 사람들을 보면 감명을 받습니다. 나는 여러 해 동안 그런 사람들의 방식대로 해보려 애썼습니다. 완벽한 기도생활을 따라해 보고 나보다 훨씬 더 유창하게 기도하는 사람들을 흉내내 보았습니다. 바르게 기도하는 방법을 배우기를 원했던 나는 기도의 비결을 알아내려고 많은 노력을 했습니다.

그러다가 나는 마침내 우리 주님은 그저 겸손하게 시작하고 겸손하게 끝내는 기도를 원하신다는 것을 알게 되었습니다 (마태복음 6:5). 주님은 우리가 은밀한 중에 기도할 때 들으시겠다고 약속하시고(6절), 화려한 말이나 외워서 하는 빈말들을 요구하지 않으십니다(7절). 주님은 우리에게 기도는 주님의 위대하심을 높이고(9-10절), 공급해주시는 주님에 대한 신뢰를 드러내며 (11절), 주님의 용서와 인도하심 가운데 우리가 안전하다는 것을 확인하는 (12-13절) 기회이자 선물이라고 확신시켜 주십니다.

하나님은 조용히 뺨을 타고 흐르는 눈물의 기도뿐 아니라 입으로 말하는 기도나 소리없이 하는 기도를 다 들으시고 마음을 쓰신다는 것을 우리에게 확신시켜 주십니다. 우리가 하나님과 우리를 향한 그분의 온전한 사랑을 신뢰하게 되면 하나님 앞에 엎드려 그분을 의지하는 겸손한 마음으로 기도하는 것이 언제나 ‘올바른’ 기도 방법이라는 것을 분명히 알게 될 것입니다.

The Right Way to Pray

I admire people who record prayer requests in journals tattered from daily handling, those who keep track of every prayer and praise and then faithfully update their lists. I’m inspired by those who gather with others to pray and whose kneeling wears out the carpet at their bedsides. For years, I tried to copy their styles, to emulate a perfect prayer life, and to imitate the eloquence of the so-much-more-articulate-than-me folks. I strived to unravel what I thought was a mystery, as I longed to learn the right way to pray.

Eventually, I learned that our Lord simply desires prayer that begins and ends with humility (Matthew 6:5). He invites us into an intimate exchange through which He promises to listen (v. 6). He never requires fancy or memorized words or phrases (v. 7). He assures us that prayer is a gift, an opportunity to honor His majesty (vv. 9–10), to display our confidence in His provision (v. 11), and to affirm our security in His forgiveness and guidance (vv. 12–13).

God assures us He hears and cares about every single spoken and unspoken prayer, as well as the prayers that slip down our cheeks as silent tears. As we place our trust in God and His perfect love for us, we can be sure praying with a humble heart that’s surrendered to and dependent on Him is always the right way to pray. XOCHITL DIXON

몸에 좋습니까?

나는 진갈색의 다크 초콜릿을 좋아합니다. 그래서 언젠가 인터넷에서 “다크 초콜릿이 몸에 좋은가?”를 검색해보았습니다. 결과는 제각각이었는데 어디서는 좋다, 어디서는 나쁘다고 하였습니다. 어떤 음식이든 대부분 이와 같은 답을 얻을 것입니다. 우유가 몸에 좋습니까? 커피가 몸에 좋습니까? 쌀밥이 몸에 좋습니까? 이런 질문에 대한 답들은 머리가 띵할 정도로 다양해서 오히려 이런 검색 자체가 몸에 안 좋을 수도 있다는 것도 알고 있어야 합니다. 어쩌면 두통이 생길지도 모르니까요!

그러나 언제나 백퍼센트 몸에 좋은 것을 찾는 분들이 있다면 하나님의 말씀을 추천해 드립니다. 하나님과의 관계를 세워가기를 원하는 예수 믿는 사람들에게 하나님의 말씀이 어떤 도움을 주는지 들어보십시오.

행실을 깨끗하게 해줍니다(시편 119:9,11).
복을 받습니다(누가복음 11:28).
지혜로운 사람이 됩니다(마태복음 7:24).
빛을 비추어 깨닫게 해줍니다(시편 119:130).
영적으로 성장하게 합니다(베드로전서 2:2).

우리 하나님은 선하십니다. 시편 145편 9절은 “여호와께서는 모든 것을 선대하시며”라고 말합니다. 선하신 하나님은 하나님을 사랑하는 이들에게 하나님과의 관계를 향상시키는 방법을 알 수 있는 가이드를 주셨습니다. 수많은 선택이 가능한 세상에서 어떻게 살아갈까 고민한다면 우리에게 무엇이 좋은 것인가를 말씀을 통해 알려주신 하나님을 찬양하십시오. 시편 기자처럼 우리도 “주의 말씀의 맛이 내게 어찌 그리 단지요 내 입에 꿀보다 더 다니이다”(시편 119:103) 라고 말합시다.

Good for You?

Because I like dark chocolate, I once Googled “Is dark chocolate good for you?” I got a variety of results—some good, some bad. You can do the same for almost any food product. Is milk good for you? Is coffee good for you? Is rice good for you? There is a dizzying array of answers to these questions, so you have to be aware that the search itself may not be good for you. It may give you a headache!

But if you’re looking for something that’s one-hundred percent good for you all the time, can I recommend the Word of God? Listen to what it can do for the follower of Jesus who is seeking to build a relationship with God.

It can keep you pure (Psalm 119:9, 11).
It blesses you (Luke 11:28).
It makes you wise (Matthew 7:24).
It gives light and understanding (Psalm 119:130).
It helps you grow spiritually (1 Peter 2:2).

Our God is good: “The Lord is good to all,” says Psalm 145:9. And in His goodness, He’s provided those who love Him with a guide that helps us see how to enhance our relationship with Him. As we try to decide how to live in a world full of choices, praise God that He’s told us in Scripture what’s good for us. Let’s say with the psalm-writer: “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth” (Psalm 119:103). DAVE BRANON

최고의 만족

성경학교에서 어린이들에게 간식을 나누어주는데 한 남자 아이가 받은 간식을 게걸스럽게 먹는 모습이 눈에 띄었습니다. 그 아이는 같은 테이블의 다른 아이들이 남긴 것까지 다 먹었습니다. 내가 팝콘 한 봉지를 주었는데도 여전히 만족하지 못했습니다. 우리는 교사 입장에서 이 작은 아이가 왜 그렇게 배고파하는지 궁금했습니다.

감정에 관해서라면 우리도 그 소년 같을 수 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 우리는 가장 깊은 곳의 갈망들을 충족시키기 위한 방법들을 찾아 헤매지만 완벽하게 만족시켜 주는 것을 결코 찾지 못합니다.

이사야 선지자는 배고프고 목마른 자들에게 “너희는 와서 사 먹으라”(이사야 55:1)라고 권유합니다. 그러고는 “너희는 어째서 양식이 아닌 것을 위해 돈을 쓰며 만족을 주지 못하는 것들을 위해 수고하느냐?”(2절, 현대인의 성경)라고 묻습니다. 이사야는 여기서 단지 육체적인 굶주림 그 이상의 것을 말하고 있습니다. 하나님은 함께 하시겠다는 그분의 약속으로 우리의 영적, 정서적 굶주림을 해결해주실 수 있습니다. 3절의 “영원한 언약” 은 하나님이 다윗에게 그의 혈통에서 구세주가 태어나 사람들과 하나님을 다시 연결시켜줄 것이라고 하는 사무엘하 7:8-16의 약속을 상기시켜줍니다. 나중에 요한복음 6장 35절과 7장 37절에서 예수님은 이사야가 했던 그 초대를 다시 하심으로써 이사야와 다른 선지자들이 예언했던 대로 예수님 자신이 구세주이심을 밝히 드러내셨습니다.

당신에게 갈급함이 있습니까? 하나님은 그분의 임재 앞에 나아와 배불리 먹으라고 우리를 초대하십니다.

The Ultimate Satisfaction

As we distributed snacks for children at a Bible School program, we noticed a little boy who devoured his snack. Then he also ate the leftovers of the children at his table. Even after I gave him a bag of popcorn, he still wasn’t satisfied. As leaders, we were concerned as to why this little boy was so hungry.

It occurred to me that we can be like that boy when it comes to our emotions. We look for ways to satisfy our deepest longings, but we never find what fully satisfies us.

The prophet Isaiah invites those who are hungry and thirsty to “come, buy and eat” (Isaiah 55:1). But then he asks, “Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?” (v. 2). Isaiah is talking about more than just physical hunger here. God can satisfy our spiritual and emotional hunger through the promise of His presence. The “everlasting covenant” in verse 3 is a reminder of a promise God made to David in 2 Samuel 7:8–16. Through David’s family line, a Savior would come to reconnect people to God. Later, in John 6:35 and 7:37, Jesus extended the same invitation Isaiah gave, thus identifying Himself as the Savior foretold by Isaiah and other prophets.

이름이 지닌 의미

감리교 목사인 “깁” 하딘은 갓난아기에 대한 자신의 희망과 열망을 반영하여 그의 아들의 이름을 유명한 설교자인 존 웨슬리의 이름을 따서 지었습니다. 그러나 존 웨슬리 하딘은 사역에 관심이 많았던 같은 이름의 존 웨슬리와는 전혀 다른 비극의 길을 선택하였습니다. 스스로 42명의 남자를 살해했다고 주장하는 하딘은 1800년대 후반 미국 서부에서 가장 악명 높은 총잡이이자 무법자 중 하나가 되었습니다.

오늘날의 많은 문화권에서처럼 성경 에서도 이름은 특별한 의미를 갖습니다. 천사는 요셉에게 하나님의 아들의 탄생을알리면서 마리아의 아기 이름을 “예수라 하라 이는 그가 자기 백성을 그들의 죄에서 구원할자이심이라”(마태복음 1:21)라고 했습니다.“여호와께서 구원하신다”라는 뜻을 지닌 예수님의 이름은 죄에서 구원하시는 그분의 사명을 분명히 보여주었습니다.

하딘과 달리 예수님은 완벽하고 철저하게 그 이름이 의미하는 대로 사셨습니다. 주님은 죽음과 부활로 그분의 구원의 사명을 완수하셨습니다. 요한은 예수님의 이름이 담고 있는 생명의 능력을 이렇게 확증하였습니다. “오직 이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려함이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라”(요한복음 20:31). 사도행전은 모든 사람에게 그를 믿으라고 권면합니다. “다른 이로써는 구원을 받을 수 없나니 천하 사람 중에 구원을 받을 만한 다른 이름을 우리에게 주신 일이 없음이라”(사도행전 4:12).

예수님의 비할 데 없는 이름을 믿음으로 부르는 모든 사람들은 그분이 주시는 용서와 소망을 각자 경험할 수 있습니다. 당신은 예수님의 이름을 불러보셨습니까?

What’s in a Name?

“Gip” Hardin, a Methodist preacher, named his son after the famous preacher John Wesley, reflecting Gip’s hopes and aspirations for his baby boy. John Wesley Hardin, however, tragically chose a different path than his ministry-minded namesake. Claiming to have killed forty-two men, Hardin became one of the most notorious gunfighters and outlaws of the American West of the late 1800s.

In the Bible, as in many cultures today, names hold special significance. Announcing the birth of God’s Son, an angel instructed Joseph to name Mary’s child “Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). The meaning of Jesus’s name—“Jehovah saves”—confirmed His mission to save from sin.

Unlike Hardin, Jesus completely and thoroughly lived up to His name. Through His death and resurrection, He accomplished His mission of rescue. John affirmed the life-giving power of Jesus’s name, saying, “But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). The book of Acts invites everyone to trust Him, for, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

All who call on Jesus’s matchless name in faith can experience for themselves the forgiveness and hope He provides. Have you called on His name? BILL CROWDER
