불에서 꺼낸 하나님의 그슬린 나무

불이 난 집에서 놀란 가정부는 제일 어린 아이들부터 끌어안고 정신없이 뛰쳐나왔습니다. 나오면서 큰 소리로 다섯 살 난 재키를 불렀습니다.

그러나 재키는 따라 나오지 못했습니다. 그때 밖에서 이 광경을 보던 한 사람이 재빨리 친구의 어깨를 타고 올라서더니 위층 창문 안으로 팔을 뻗어, 지붕이 무너져 내리기 직전에 재키를 무사히 끌어내었습니다. 아이의 엄마 수잔나는 어린 재키를 “불에서 꺼낸 그슬린 나무”와 같았다고 했습니다. 이 “그슬린 나무”가 바로 위대한 순회 목사 존 웨슬리(1703-1791)였습니다.

수잔나 웨슬리는 하나님의 성품에 대한 깊은 통찰을 보여준 선지자 스가랴를 인용했던 것입니다. 스가랴는 그가 본 환상을 이야기하면서 사탄이 대제사장 여호수아 옆에 서 있는 법정의 장면으로 우리를 이끌어갑니다(3:1). 사탄은 여호수아를 고발하지만 주님은 사탄을 꾸짖으며 “이는 불에서 꺼낸 그슬린 나무가 아니냐”(2절)고 하십니다. 그리고 주님은 여호수아에게 “내가 네 죄악을 제거하여 버렸으니 네게 아름다운 옷을 입히리라”(4절)고 말씀하십니다.

그러고 나서 주님은 여호수아에게 “네가 만일 내 도를 행하며 내 규례를 지키면 네가 내 집을 다스릴 것”(7절)이라는 도전이자 기회를 주셨습니다.

우리가 예수님을 믿는 믿음을 통해 하나님으로부터 받는 선물을 보여주는 참으로 굉장한 묘사이지요! 하나님은 우리가 성령님의 인도하심을 따를 때 우리를 불 속에서 건지시고, 깨끗하게 하시며, 우리 안에서 역사하십니다. 우리 자신이 바로 그 불 속에서 꺼낸 하나님의 그슬린 나무라고 할 수 있습니다.

하나님은 우리를 사랑하시기에 우리를 구원하신다. 그리고 그 사랑을 다른 이들과 나누도록 우리를 준비시키신다.

God’s Brand

Scooping up the smallest children, a frantic maid raced out of the flaming house. As she ran, she called loudly to five-year-old Jacky.

But Jacky didn’t follow. Outside, a bystander reacted quickly, standing on the shoulders of a friend. Reaching into the upstairs window, he pulled Jacky to safety—just before the roof caved in. Little Jacky, said his mother Susanna, was “a brand [stick] plucked from the burning.” You might know that “brand” as the great traveling minister John Wesley (1703–1791).

Susanna Wesley was quoting Zechariah, a prophet who provides valuable insight into God’s character. Relating a vision he had, the prophet takes us into a courtroom scene where Satan is standing next to Joshua the high priest (3:1). Satan accuses Joshua, but the Lord rebukes the devil and says, “Is this not a brand [burning stick] plucked from the fire?” (V. 2 NKJV ). The Lord tells Joshua, “I have taken away your sin, and I will put fine garments on you” (V. 4).

Then the Lord gave Joshua this challenge—and an opportunity: “If you will walk in obedience to me and keep my requirements, then you will govern my house” (V. 7).

What a picture of the gift we receive from God through our faith in Jesus! He snatches us from the fire, cleans us up, and works in us as we follow His Spirit’s leading. You might call us God’s brands plucked from the fire. TIM GUSTAFSON

우리 친구들을 위하여

에밀리 브론테의 소설 ‘폭풍의 언덕’에는 종종 성경 말씀을 인용해서 남을 비판하는 성미 고약한 남자가 등장합니다. 이 인물은 “성경을 샅샅이 뒤져서 약속의 말씀들은 자신에게 적용하고 저주하는 말씀들은 이웃에게 퍼붓는 아주 진저리날 정도로 독선적인 바리새인”으로 기억에 남도록 생생하게 묘사되어 있습니다.

재미있는 그 구절을 읽으면서 여러분 주위의 어떤 인물이 떠오를지도 모르겠습니다. 하지만, 남의 잘못은 잘 정죄하면서도 자신의 실수는 쉽게 변명하는 우리도 다 조금씩은 그와 같지 않을까요?

그러나 성경을 보면 어떤 사람들은 놀랍게도 그와 정반대로 행동했습니다. 그들은 다른 이들을 살리는 일이라면 하나님께서 그들에게 주신 약속도 포기했고,
심지어 저주도 기꺼이 받으려 했습니다. 모세를 생각해보십시오. 이스라엘 백성들이 용서받지 못하는 것을 지켜보느니 차라리 자신의 이름을 하나님의 책에서 지워달라고 했습니다(출애굽기 32:32). 바울도 그랬습니다. 자신이 “그리스도에게서 끊어짐”으로써 자기 백성이 주님을 만날 수만 있다면 그렇게 하겠다고
했습니다(로마서 9:3).

인간은 천성적으로 독선적이기는 하지만, 성경에서는 자신들보다 남을 더 사랑했던 사람들이 각광을 받고 있습니다.

그 이유는 그와 같은 사랑이 궁극적으로 예수님을 가리키고 있기 때문입니다. 예수님은 “사람이 친구를 위하여 자기 목숨을 버리면 이보다 더 큰 사랑이 없다”(요한복음 15:13)고 가르치셨습니다. 우리가 예수님을 알기도 전에 그분은 우리에게 생명을 주시려고 죽으심으로 우리를 “끝까지”(13:1) 사랑하셨습니다.

이제 우리는 이처럼 사랑하고 사랑받기 위해 하나님의 가족으로 초대받았습니다(15:9-12). 그리고 우리가 상상을 초월하는 그리스도의 사랑을 다른 사람들에게 베풀 때, 이 세상은 주님의 모습을 보게 될 것입니다.

For Our Friends

In Emily Bronte’s novel Wuthering Heights, a cantankerous man who often quotes the Bible to criticize others is memorably described as “the wearisomest self-righteous Pharisee that ever ransacked a Bible to rake [apply] the promises to himself and fling the curses to his neighbours.”

It’s a funny line; and it may even bring particular people to mind. But aren’t we all a bit like this—prone to condemn others’ failures while excusing our own?

In Scripture some people amazingly did the exact opposite; they were willing to give up God’s promises for them and even be cursed if it would save others. Consider Moses, who said he’d rather be blotted out of God’s book than see the Israelites unforgiven (EXODUS 32:32). Or Paul, who said he’d choose to be “cut off from Christ” if it meant his people would find Him (ROMANS 9:3).

As self-righteous as we naturally are, Scripture highlights those who love others more than themselves.

Because ultimately such love points to Jesus. “Greater love has no one than this,” Jesus taught, than “to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (JOHN 15:13). Even before we knew Him, Jesus loved us “to the end” (13:1)—choosing death to give us life.

Now we are invited into the family of God, to love and be loved like this (15:9–12). And as we pour into others Christ’s unimaginable love, the world will catch a glimpse of Him. MONICA BRANDS

미스터리 풀기

어느 날 퇴근길에 우리 집 진입로 옆에 있는 굽 높은 여자 구두 한 켤레가 눈에 띄었습니다. 그것이 누구 것인지 짐작이 간 나는 딸 리사가 아이들을 데리러 집에 오면 주려고 차고 안에 가져다 놓았습니다. 그런데 딸에게 물어보니 자기 것이 아니라는 것이었습니다. 우리 가족의 신발이 아니었습니다. 그래서 구두를 있던 자리에 도로 갖다 놓았더니 다음 날 신발이 사라졌습니다. 미스터리였습니다.

바울 사도도 그의 서신에서 미스터리에 대해 쓴 것을 아십니까? 그가 말한 미스터리는 “추리소설” 같은 것이 아니라 그보다 훨씬 더 많은 것을 내포하고 있습니다. 예를 들면 에베소서 3장에서 바울은 “다른 세대의 사람들이 알지 못하던” 미스터리에 대해 썼습니다(5절). 이 미스터리라는 것은 과거에 하나님은 이스라엘을 통해 자신을 나타내셨지만 지금은 예수님을 통해 이방인들, 즉 이스라엘 밖에 있는 자들도 “이스라엘과 함께 상속자”가 될 수 있다는 것입니다(6절).

이것이 무슨 의미인지 생각해보십시오. 그것은 누구든지 예수님을 구주로 믿으면 함께 하나님을 사랑하고 섬길 수 있다는 것입니다. 우리는 모두 동등하게 “담대함과 확신을 가지고 하나님께 나아갈” (12절) 수 있습니다. 그리고 교회가 하나됨으로써 세상이 하나님의 지혜와 선하심을 보게 될 것입니다(10절).

우리를 구원하신 하나님을 찬양합시다. 사람들이 어떤 배경을 가지고 있든 예수님 안에서 하나 될 때에 하나 됨의 미스터리가 풀립니다.

Unlocking a Mystery

When I came home from work one day and saw a pair of lady’s high-heel shoes next to the driveway, I was sure I knew whose they were. So I put them in the garage to give to my daughter Lisa when she returned to the house to pick up her children. But when I checked with Lisa, I found they didn’t belong to her. In fact, no one in our family claimed them, so I put them back where I’d found them. The next day, they were gone. Mysterious.

Did you know that the apostle Paul wrote of a mystery in his letters? But the mystery he described was so much more than some kind of “whodunit.” In Ephesians 3, for example, Paul spoke of a mystery that “was not made known to people in other generations” (v. 5). This mystery is that, while in the past God revealed Himself through Israel, now, through Jesus, Gentiles—those outside of Israel—could be “heirs together with Israel” (v. 6).

Think about what this means: all who trust Jesus as Savior can love and serve God together. We can all equally “approach [Him] with freedom and confidence” (v. 12). And through the church’s unity the world will see God’s wisdom and goodness (v. 10).

Praise God for our salvation. It unlocks for us the mystery of unity as people of any and all backgrounds become one in Jesus. DAVE BRANON

이삭줍기

한 탄자니아 친구가 수도 도도마에 있는 황량한 땅 일부를 개간하려는 꿈을 갖고 있습니다. 룻은 그 지역의 몇몇 과부들의 어려움을 알고는 먼지가 날리는 땅을 바꾸어 그곳에 닭을 키우고 작물도 재배하려고 합니다. 가난한 사람을 돕고 싶어 하는 그녀의 꿈은 하나님을 향한 사랑에서 비롯되었고 성경에 나오는 같은 이름의 사람 룻에게서 영향을 받았습니다.

하나님의 율법은 가난한 사람이나 이방인들이 밭 가장자리에서 이삭을 주울 수 있게 허락하고 있습니다(레위기 19:9-10). (성경에 나오는) 룻은 이방인이었으므로 들에서 일을 하면서 자신과 시어머니의 식량을 모을 수 있었습니다. 친족 보아스의 밭에서 이삭을 줍게 되면서 룻과 나오미는 보호 받고 살 수 있는 집을 마침내 찾게 됩니다. 룻은 하루 종일 일하며 자신의 재능과 노력을 다해 밭 가장자리에서 식량을 모았고, 하나님은 그런 그녀를 축복하셨습니다.

친구 룻의 열정과 성경에 나오는 룻의 헌신을 보며 나는 가슴이 뭉클하며 가난하고 짓밟힌 이들을 돌보시는 하나님께 감사했습니다. 그 두 사람에 감동하여 나는 베푸시는 하나님께 감사하기 위해 우리 공동체 뿐 아니라 더 넓은 곳으로까지 다른 사람들을 도와줄 방법을 찾고 있습니다. 당신은 어떻게 하나님의 자비를 다른 사람들에게 전달하여 하나님께 경배하시겠습니까?

Gleaning the Fields

A Tanzanian friend has a vision for redeeming a piece of desolate land in the capital city of Dodoma. Recognizing the needs of some local widows, Ruth wants to transform these dusty acres into a place to keep chickens and grow crops. Her vision to provide for those in need is rooted in her love for God, and was inspired by her biblical namesake, Ruth.

God’s laws allowed the poor or the foreigner to glean (harvest) from the edges of the fields (Leviticus 19:9–10). Ruth (in the Bible) was a foreigner, and was therefore allowed to work in the fields, gathering food for her and her mother-in-law. Gleaning in Boaz’s field, a close relative, led to Ruth and Naomi ultimately finding a home and protection. Ruth used her ingenuity and effort in the work of the day—gathering food from the edges of the field—and God blessed her.

The passion of my friend Ruth and the dedication of the biblical Ruth stir me to give thanks to God for how He cares for the poor and downtrodden. They inspire me to seek ways to help others in my community and more broadly as a means of expressing my thanks to our giving God. How might you worship God through extending His mercy to others? 하나님께 먼저 묻기

결혼 초기에 나는 아내가 무엇을 좋아하는지 알아내기 위해 무척 애를 썼습니다. ‘저녁식사를 조용히 집에서 하는 걸 좋아할까, 아니면 멋진 식당에 가서 하는 걸 좋아할까? 내가 친구들과 몰려다니는 것이 괜찮을까, 아니면 주말에 자기와 함께 있는 것을 기대하고 있을까?’ 그래서 한번은 내 마음대로 먼저 추측해서 결정하기보다는 “당신은 어느 것을 원해?” 라고 물어보았습니다.

“아무래도 좋아요. 당신이 그렇게 나를 생각해주는 것만으로도 행복해요.” 아내가 따뜻한 미소로 대답했습니다.

나는 직업을 선택하는 경우처럼 때때로 하나님께서 내가 무엇을 하기를 원하시는지 ‘정확히’ 알기를 간절히 원했습니다. 그래서 인도해주시길 바라며 기도하고 성경을 읽었지만 아무런 구체적인 응답을 얻지 못했습니다. 그러나 한 가지 분명한 응답은 있었습니다. 그것은 주님을 의뢰하고, 주님을 기뻐하고, 내 길을 주님께 맡겨야 한다는 것이었습니다(시편 37:3-5).

만일 우리에게 자신의 방법보다 주님의 방법을 먼저 구하는 마음만 있다면 하나님은 대개 우리에게 선택의 자유를 주신다는 것을 그때 깨달았습니다. 그것은 누가 보아도 분명히 잘못된 것이거나 하나님이 기뻐하시지 않는 선택은 버리는 것을 의미합니다. 그것은 부도덕하거나, 악한 것이거나, 하나님과의 관계에 도움이 되지 않는 것들일 수도 있습니다. 만일 남은 다른 선택들이 다 하나님을 기쁘시게 하는 것이라면 우리는 그 중에서 자유롭게 선택할 수 있습니다. 우리를 사랑하시는 하나님 아버지는 그분을 기뻐하는 우리 마음의 소원을 이루어주시기를 원하십니다(4절).

Asking God First

Early in our marriage, I struggled to figure out my wife’s preferences. Did she want a quiet dinner at home or a meal at a fancy restaurant? Was it okay for me to hang out with the guys, or did she expect me to keep the weekend free for her? Once, instead of guessing and deciding first, I asked her, “What do you want?”

“I’m fine with either,” she replied with a warm smile. “I’m just happy you thought of me.”

At times I’ve wanted desperately to know exactly what God wanted me to do—such as which job to take. Praying for guidance and reading the Bible didn’t reveal any specific answers. But one answer was clear: I was to trust in the Lord, take delight in Him, and commit my way to Him (Psalm 37:3–5).

That’s when I realized that God usually gives us the freedom of choice—if we first seek to put His ways before our own. That means dropping choices that are plainly wrong or would not please Him. It might be something immoral, ungodly, or unhelpful toward our relationship with Him. If the remaining options please God, then we’re free to choose from them. Our loving Father wants to give us the desires of our hearts—hearts that take delight in Him (v. 4). LESLIE KOH

낙심될 때

옳은 일을 하려다 보면 매우 힘들 때가 있습니다. ‘내 호의적인 말과 행동들이 도대체 무슨 효과가 있기는 한 걸까?’라는 궁금증이 생기기도 합니다. 얼마 전에 친구를 격려해주려고 기도하는 마음으로 이메일을 보냈는데 분노에 찬 답변만 받게 되었을 때 그런 궁금증이 생겼습니다. 나는 바로 마음에 상처가 되고 화도 났습니다. ‘어떻게 그렇게 오해를 할 수 있지?’ 화를 내며 답장하려다가 한 가지 사실이 떠올랐습니다. 그것은 우리가 누군가에게 예수님이 그들을 사랑하신다고 말했을 때 언제나 우리가 원하던 결과를 얻는 것은 아니라는 것입니다. 우리가 다른 사람들을 주님께로 이끌기를 바라며 그들에게 좋게 대하여도 그들은 우리를 퇴짜놓을 수 있습니다. 누군가를 올바른 행동으로 이끌려는 우리의 조심스러운 노력도 무시당할 때가 있습니다.

우리의 진심어린 노력에 상대방이 보이는 반응 때문에 낙심될 때 갈라디아서 6장이 좋은 지침이 될 수 있습니다. 여기서 바울 사도는 우리가 말하고 행동하는 동기를 생각해보라고 하며, “우리의 행동을 점검해보라”고 권면합니다(1-4절). 그리고는 인내심을 가지라고 격려합니다. “우리가 선을 행하되 낙심하지 말지니 포기하지 아니하면 때가 이르매 거두리라 그러므로 우리는 기회 있는 대로 모든 이에게 착한 일을 하되 더욱 믿음의 가정들에게 할지니라”(9-10절).

하나님은 우리가 계속 그분을 위해 살아가기를 원하십니다. 거기에는 “선을 행하는” 일, 곧 다른 사람들을 위해 기도하는 것과 그들에게 주님에 대해 이야기하는 것이 포함되어 있습니다. 하나님께서 그 결과를 지켜보실 것입니다.

When We’re Weary

Sometimes trying to do the right thing can be exhausting. We may wonder, Do my well-intentioned words and actions make any difference at all? I wondered this recently when I sent a prayerfully thought-out email meant to encourage a friend, only to have it met with an angry response. My immediate reaction was a mixture of hurt and anger. How could I be so misunderstood?

Before I responded out of anger, I remembered that we won’t always see the results (or the results we desire) when we tell someone about how Jesus loves them. When we do good things for others hoping to draw them to Him, they may spurn us. Our gentle efforts to prompt someone to right action may be ignored.

Galatians 6 is a good place to turn when we’re discouraged by someone’s response to our sincere efforts. Here the apostle Paul encourages us to consider our motives—to “test our actions”—for what we say and do (vv. 1–4). When we have done so, he encourages us to persevere: “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people” (vv. 9–10).

God wants us to continue living for Him, which includes praying for and telling others about Him—“doing good.” He will see to the results. ALYSON KIEDA

물고기 이야기가 아닙니다

호주의 사우스 퀸즈랜드 앞바다에서 자주 목격되는 미갈루라는 이름의 고래는 지금까지 기록된 첫 번째의 하얀색 혹등고래입니다. 몸길이가 12미터가 넘는 이 굉장한 고래는 너무나 희귀해서 호주정부가 보호하기 위해 특별법까지 제정했습니다.

성경에도 “거대한 물고기”가 나옵니다. 그것 또한 너무 희귀한 동물로서 하나님께서 도망가는 예언자를 삼키도록 특별히 예비해놓으신 것이었습니다(요나 1:17). 우리 대부분은 이 이야기를 알고 있습니다. 하나님은 요나에게 니느웨에 가서 심판의 메시지를 전하라고 말씀하셨지만 요나는 유대인을 비롯한 거의 모든 이들에게 잔인하다고 소문이 난 니느웨 사람들을 위해서는 아무것도 하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그래서 그는 도망쳤는데 이후 상황이 나쁘게 전개된 것입니다. 요나는 물고기 배 안에서 회개하고 마침내 니느웨 사람들에게 말씀을 전했으며 그들 또한 회개했습니다(3:5-10).

멋진 이야기가 아닙니까? 그러나 이야기는 거기서 끝나지 않습니다. 니느웨 사람들은 회개했지만 요나는 오히려 화가 났습니다. 그는 기도했습니다. “여호와여, 내가 말하지 않았습니까?......나는 주께서 은혜롭고 자비로우시며 쉽게 노하지 않으시고 사랑이 풍성하신 하나님인 것을 알았습니다”(4:2, 현대인의 성경). 죽을 뻔했던 상황에서 살아났음에도 불구하고 요나의 죄로 가득한 분노는 계속 심해져서 스스로 죽기를 바라는 기도를 하기에 이르렀습니다(3절).

요나의 이야기는 물고기에 관한 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 우리 인간의 본성과 우리를 추적하시는 하나님의 본성에 관한 이야기입니다. 베드로 사도는 “주께서는 너희를 대하여 오래 참으사 아무도 멸망하지 아니하고 다 회개하기에 이르기를 원하시느니라”(베드로후서 3:9)라고 기록했습니다. 하나님은 잔인한 니느웨 사람들과 투덜대는 선지자, 그리고 당신과 나 모두에게 그분의 사랑을 베풀어주십니다.

우리의 사랑은 유한하지만 하나님의 사랑은 무한하다.

It’s Not About the Fish

Sighted numerous times off the coast of Australia’s South Queensland, Migaloo is the first albino humpback whale ever documented. The splendid creature, estimated at more than forty feet long, is so rare that Australia passed a law specifically to protect him.

The Bible tells us about a “huge fish” so rare that God had provided it especially to swallow a runaway prophet (Jonah 1:17). Most know the story. God told Jonah to take a message of judgment to Nineveh. But Jonah wanted nothing to do with the Ninevites, who had a reputation for cruelty to just about everyone—including the Hebrews. So he fled. Things went badly. From inside the fish, Jonah repented. Eventually he preached to the Ninevites, and they repented too (3:5–10).

Great story, right? Except it doesn’t end there. While Nineveh repented, Jonah pouted. “Isn’t this what I said, Lord?” he prayed. “I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love” (4:2). Having been rescued from certain death, Jonah’s sinful anger grew until even his prayer became suicidal (v. 3).

The story of Jonah isn’t about the fish. It’s about our human nature and the nature of the God who pursues us. “The Lord is patient with you,” wrote the apostle Peter, “not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). God offers His love to brutal Ninevites, pouting prophets, and you and me. TIM GUSTAFSON

많은 아름다운 것들

화가이자 선교사였던 릴리아스 트라터는 죽기 직전 창문 밖을 보다가 천국 마차의 환상을 보았습니다. 그녀의 전기 작가는 그녀의 친구가 이렇게 물었다고 합니다. “아름다운 것들이 많이 보이니?” 그녀는 대답했습니다. “응, 아름다운 것들이 아주 많아!”

트라터의 마지막 말은 하나님께서 그녀의 삶에 역사하신 것을 잘 보여주고 있습니다. 그녀의 죽음 뿐 아니라 전 생애를 통해 하나님은 그녀에게, 그리고 그녀를 통해 아름다운 것들을 많이 드러내셨습니다. 그녀는 재능 있는 화가였지만 알제리에서 선교사로 예수님을 섬기기로 결심했습니다. 그녀를 가르쳤던 유명 화가 존 러스킨은 그녀가 화가로서의 경력보다 선교사역을 선택했을 때 “이게 무슨 낭비란 말인가”라고 말했다고 합니다

신약성경에도 이와 유사한 이야기가 나옵니다. 한 여인이 옥합을 들고 나병 환자 시몬의 집에 와서 예수님의 발에 향유를 부었습니다. 그러자 그 자리에 있던 사람들은 그것을 낭비라고 생각했습니다. 이 비싼 향유는 보통 노동자의 일 년치 품삯의 값어치가 있는 것이어서 그곳에 있던 사람들은 그것을 가난한 사람을 돕는 데 사용할 수도 있었을 것이라고 생각했습니다. 그러나 예수님은 여인의 깊은 헌신을 칭찬하시며 “그는 내게 아름다운 일을 했다”(마가복음 14:6, 새번역)라고 말씀하셨습니다.

우리는 매일의 삶 속에서 그리스도의 생명의 빛이 빛나게 하고 또 세상 사람들에게 그분의 아름다움을 드러내 보일 수 있습니다. 어떤 사람들에게는 그것이 낭비로 보일 수 있습니다. 그러나 적극적인 마음으로 주님을 섬기도록 합시다. 우리가 주님을 위해 많은 아름다운 일들을 했다고 예수님께서 말씀하실 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다.

Many Beautiful Things

Just before her death, artist and missionary Lilias Trotter looked out a window and saw a vision of a heavenly chariot. According to her biographer, a friend asked, “Are you seeing many beautiful things?” She answered, “Yes, many, many beautiful things.”

Trotter’s final words reflect God’s work in her life. Not only in death, but throughout her life, He revealed much beauty to her and through her. Although a talented artist, she chose to serve Jesus as a missionary in Algeria. John Ruskin, a famous painter who tutored her, is said to have commented, “What a waste,” when she chose the mission field over a career in art.

Similarly, in the New Testament, when a woman came to Simon the Leper’s house with an alabaster jar and poured perfume on Jesus’s head, those present saw it as a waste. This expensive perfume was worth a year’s common wages, so some of the people present thought it could have been used to help the poor. However, commending this woman’s deep devotion to Him, Jesus said, “She has done a beautiful thing to me” (Mark 14:6).

Every day we can choose to let Christ’s life shine in our lives and display His beauty to the world. To some, it may seem a waste, but let us have willing hearts to serve Him. May Jesus say we have done many beautiful things for Him. KEILA OCHOA

하나님의 길을 걷기

“이쪽으로 가야 돼.” 나는 많은 방문객들 사이로 앞에 가고 있는 엄마와 누나들을 따라가라고 아들의 어깨를 잡아 방향을 고쳐주며 말했습니다. 온 가족이 놀이동산에 간 그날 나는 시간이 지날수록 같은 말을 더 자주 해야 했습니다. 아들은 지쳐가면서 주의가 더욱 산만해졌습니다. ‘도대체 왜 못 따라가는 거야?’ 나는 알 수가 없었습니다.

그러다 갑자기 이런 생각이 들었습니다. ‘나도 똑같은 실수를 얼마나 자주 하는가? 주님의 방식을 구하기보단 내가 원하는 것을 좇으려는 유혹에 이끌리어 순종하며 걷던 주님의 길을 벗어난 적이 얼마나 많았던가?’

이스라엘 백성들을 향해 이사야에게 주신 하나님의 말씀을 생각해보십시오. “너희가 오른쪽으로 치우치든지 왼쪽으로 치우치든지 네 뒤에서 말소리가 네 귀에 들려 이르기를 이것이 바른 길이니 너희는 이리로 가라 할 것이며”(이사야 30:21). 이사야 30장 초반부에 하나님은 그의 백성들의 패역함을 꾸짖으셨습니다. 그럼에도 하나님은 그들 자신의 길 대신 하나님의 능력을 신뢰하면(15절) 은혜와 긍휼을 베풀어주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다(18절).

하나님의 은혜로우심은 성령님을 통해 우리를 인도하시겠다는 그분의 약속을 통해서도 나타납니다. 우리가 원하는 것을 주님께 말하고 기도로 주님의 뜻을 물어볼 때 성령님이 우리를 인도해주십니다. 우리가 주님을 신뢰하고 그분의 음성에 귀 기울일 때, 감사하게도 하나님은 인내하시며 우리를 매일 매일 한 걸음 한 걸음씩 인도해주십니다.

Walking God’s Way

“We’re going this way,” I said as I touched my son’s shoulder and redirected him through the crowd to follow his mom and sisters in front of us. I’d done this more often as the day wore on at the amusement park our family was visiting. He was getting tired and more easily distracted. Why can’t he just follow them? I wondered.

Then it hit me: How often do I do exactly the same thing? How often do I veer from obediently walking with God, enchanted by the temptations to pursue what I want instead of seeking His ways?

Think of Isaiah’s words from God for Israel: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’ ” (Isaiah 30:21). Earlier in that chapter, God had rebuked His people for their rebelliousness. But if they would trust His strength instead of their own ways (v. 15), He promised to show His graciousness and compassion (v. 18).

One expression of God’s graciousness is His promise to guide us by His Spirit. That happens as we talk to Him about our desires and ask in prayer what He has for us. I’m thankful God patiently directs us, day-by-day, step-by-step, as we trust Him and listen for His voice. ADAM HOLZ

형제의 말에 귀 기울이기

“내 말을 들어, 난 네 형이야!” 우리 동네에 사는 형제 중 형이 걱정이 되어 자기 동생을 설득하려 했습니다. 형이 받아들이기에는 너무 먼 곳으로 동생이 떠나려고 했기 때문입니다. 분명히 형은 그 상황에서 무엇이 최선인지 더 잘 판단할 수 있었을 것입니다.

우리 가운데에도 형제자매의 지혜로운 조언을 거절해 본 사람들이 있겠지요? 더 성숙한 사람의 조언을 거부하여 힘든 결과를 맞이해야 했던 경험은 당신에게만 있는 것이 아닙니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리에게 가장 큰 자산의 하나는 주님을 믿는 믿음 안에서 영적으로 함께 연결되어 있는 가족입니다. 이 가족 안에는 하나님을 사랑하고 서로를 사랑하는 성숙한 사람들이 있습니다. 우리 동네의 그 동생처럼 우리는 올바른 길로 돌아오기 위해 때때로 주의나 훈계의 말이 필요합니다. 우리가 다른 사람에게 마음의 상처를 주거나 반대로 다른 사람에게서 상처를 받을 때 특히 그렇습니다. 옳은 일을 하기가 힘들 때도 있습니다. 그러나 마태복음 18:15-20의 예수님의 말씀은 우리의 영적인 가족 안에서 상처가 생길 때 어떻게 해야 하는지를 잘 보여줍니다.

감사하게도 은혜로운 하나님 아버지께서 우리 삶 속에 하나님과 다른 사람들을 높이며 살 수 있도록 우리를 도와줄 사람들을 보내주십니다. 그러므로 서로에게 귀 기울일 때 하나님의 가족 안에서 모든 일들이 더 좋아질 것입니다(15절).

Listening to Your Brother

“You need to listen to me, I’m your brother!” The plea came from a concerned older brother in my neighborhood and was directed to a younger sibling who was moving farther away from him than the older child was comfortable with. Clearly the older child was better able to judge what was best in the situation.

How many of us have resisted the wise counsel of a brother or sister? If you’ve had to face the consequences of resisting the good advice of someone more mature, you’re not alone.

One of the greatest resources we can have as believers in Jesus is a family—those who are spiritually related because of a common faith in Him. This family includes mature men and women who love God and each other. Like the little brother in my neighborhood, we sometimes need a word of caution or correction to get us back on track. This is particularly true when we offend someone or someone offends us. Doing what’s right can be difficult. Yet Jesus’s words in Matthew 18:15–20 show us what to do when offenses happen within our spiritual family.

Thankfully, our gracious heavenly Father places in our lives people who are prepared to help us honor Him and others. And when we listen, things go better in the family (v. 15). ARTHUR JACKSON
