주님 품에서 안전함

바깥 날씨는 위협적이었고, 내 핸드폰에서는 갑작스런 홍수 발생에 대한 경보가 울렸습니다. 학교 버스에서 내리는 아이들을 데리러 부모와 어른들이 몰려와서 평소보다 많은 차들이 우리 집 주변에 주차되어 있었습니다. 버스가 도착하자 비가 내리기 시작했습니다. 그 때 한 여인이 차에서 내려 트렁크에서 우산을 꺼내는 모습이 보였습니다. 그 여인은 어느 여자아이에게로 가더니 차에 탈 때까지 그 아이가 비를 맞지 않게 해주었습니다. 부모의 보살핌을 “실시간으로” 보여주는 아름다운 광경을 보고 있자니 우리 하나님 아버지의 돌보심이 떠올랐습니다.

이사야 선지자는 하나님의 백성들에게 불순종으로 말미암은 심판 이후에 더 밝은 날들이 다가올 것을 예언합니다(이사야 40:1-8). 높은 산에서 전해진 이 아름다운 하늘의 소식은(9절) 이스라엘 백성들에게 전능하신 하나님의 임재와 온화한 돌보심을 확인시켜주었습니다. 다행스러운 것은 그때나 지금이나 하나님이 권능으로 다스리시므로 우리 마음이 불안하여 두려워할 필요가 없다는 것이지요(9-10절). 주님의 보호하심에 관한 그 소식은 마치 목자가 하듯이(11절) 연약한 어린 양을 그 팔로 안전하게 품에 안으며 젖 먹이는 암양들을 온순히 인도하는 것과 같음을 알려줍니다.

상황들이 항상 쉽지만은 않은 이 세상 속에서 이런 모습의 안전과 보살핌은 우리로 하여금 담대히 주님을 바라볼 수 있게 합니다. 전심으로 주님을 신뢰하는 사람들은 주님 안에서 안전과 새 힘을 얻게 됩니다(31절).

Safe in His Arms

The weather outside was threatening, and the alert on my cell phone warned about the possibility of flash floods. An unusual number of cars were parked in my neighbor-
hood as parents and others gathered to pick up children at the school bus drop-off point. By the time the bus arrived, it had started to rain. That’s when I observed a woman exit her car and retrieve an umbrella from the trunk. She walked towards a little girl and made sure the child was shielded from the rain until they returned to the vehicle. What a beautiful “real time” picture of parental, protective care that reminded me of the care of our heavenly Father.

The prophet Isaiah forecast punishment for disobedience followed by brighter days for God’s people (ISAIAH 40:1–8). The heavenly dispatch from the mountain (V. 9)
assured the Israelites of God’s mighty presence and tender care. The good news, then and now, is that because of God’s power and ruling authority, anxious hearts need not fear (VV. 9–10). Included in the announcement was news about the Lord’s protection, the kind of protection shepherds provide (V. 11): vulnerable young sheep would find safety in the Shepherd’s arms; nursing ewes would be led gently.

In a world where circumstances aren’t always easy, such images of safety and care compel us to look confidently to the Lord. Those who trust wholeheartedly in the Lord find security and renewed strength in Him (V. 31). ARTHUR JACKSON

예수님에 관한 이야기

어렸을 때 나는 우리 동네의 작은 도서관에 잘 갔습니다. 어느 날 청소년 권장도서들이 즐비한 책장을 보면서, 나는 이 책을 모두 다 읽어야겠다고 생각했습니다. 이런 야심 찬 결심을 했지만 나는 한 가지 중요한 사실을 간과하고 있었습니다. 신간 도서들이 책장에 정기적으로 추가된다는 것을 생각하지 못한 것입니다. 나름대로 열심히 노력해봤지만 읽을 책이
너무도 많았습니다.

새로운 책들이 계속해서 더 많은 책장을 메워 갑니다. 만일 요한 사도가 오늘날 얼마나 많은 책이 출판되고 있는지 알게 된다면 아마 많이 놀랄 것입니다. 그가 쓴 신약성경의 요한복음, 요한1, 2, 3서, 그리고 요한계시록, 이 다섯 권은 두루마리 양피지에 직접 손으로 쓴 것들이기 때문입니다.

요한 사도는 성령님의 강권하심으로 그리스도인들에게 예수님의 생애와 사역을 목도한 것을 전해주려고 그 책들을 썼습니다(요한1서 1:1-4). 그러나 요한이 쓴 것들은 예수님의 공생애 동안 행하시고 가르치신 것들의 극히 일부분에 지나지 않습니다. 실제로 요한도 예수님이 행하신 모든 것을 기록한다면 “이 세상이라도 기록된 책을 두기에 부족할 것이라”(요한복음 21:25)고 말했으니까요.

요한 사도가 한 말은 지금도 맞습니다. 예수님에 관해 쓴 수많은 책들이 있지만 온 세상의 도서관에 있는 책들로도 그분의 사랑과 은혜에 대한 모든 이야기를 다 담을 수 없을 것입니다. 또한 우리에게도 함께 나눌 우리 자신들의 이야기가 있고 또 그것을 대대로 알릴 수 있음을 기뻐하며 찬양합니다(시편 89:1).

Stories of Jesus

As a girl I loved to visit my small local library. One day, looking at the bookshelves holding the young adult section, I reasoned I could probably read every book. In my enthusiasm I forgot one important fact—new books were regularly added to the shelves. Although I gave it a valiant effort, there were simply too many books.

New books continue to fill more and more bookshelves. The apostle John likely would be amazed with the availability of books today since his five New Testament books, the Gospel of John; 1, 2, and 3 John; and Revelation, were handwritten on parchment scrolls.

John wrote those books because he felt compelled by the Holy Spirit to give Christians an eyewitness account of Jesus’s life and ministry (1 JOHN 1:1–4). But John’s writings contained only a small fraction of all that Jesus did and taught during His ministry. In fact, John said if everything Jesus did were written down “the whole could not contain the books that would be written” (JOHN 21:25 NLT ).

John’s claim remains true today. Despite all the books that have been written about Jesus, the libraries of the world still cannot contain every story of His love and grace. We can also celebrate that we have our own personal stories to share and rejoice that we will be proclaiming them forever! (PSALM 89:1). LISA SAMRA

사형장에서 부른 찬송

마약 밀매로 유죄 선고를 받은 두 사람이 사형 선고를 받고 10년 동안 집행을 기다리고 있었습니다. 그들은 감옥에 있는 동안 예수님 안에서 하나님의 사랑을 깨닫고 삶이 변화되었습니다. 사형 집행 시간이 다가왔을 때 이 죄수들은 주기도문을 암송하고 찬송가 “나 같은 죄인 살리신”을 부르며 사형 집행관 앞에 섰습니다. 그들에게는 하나님을 믿는 믿음이 있었기에 성령님의 능력을 힘입어 놀라운 용기로 죽음을 맞이할 수 있었습니다.

그 사형수들은 구주 되신 예수님이 보여주신 믿음의 본을 따랐습니다. 예수님은 죽음이 임박했음을 아시고 제자들과 함께 찬송하며 저녁 시간을 보내셨습니다. 죽음을 앞둔 상황에서 예수님이 노래할 수 있었다는 사실도 매우 놀라운 일이지만, 더욱 놀라운 것은 그분이 부르신 노래였습니다. 그날 저녁 예수님과 제자들은 유월절 만찬을 가지면서 언제나처럼 ‘할렐’이라고 하는 시편 113-118편으로 끝을 맺는 긴 찬송을 함께 했습니다. 죽음을 앞두고 그날 밤 예수님은 그를 두르는 “사망의 줄”을 노래했습니다(시편 116:3). 또한 진실하신 하나님의 사랑(117:2)을 찬양하고, 구원이 되시는 하나님께 감사했습니다 (118:14). 십자가에서 고난당하시기 전 마지막 밤, 그 시편 노래들은 분명 예수님께 위로가 되었을 것입니다.

하나님을 향한 예수님의 신뢰는 너무나 컸습니다. 그렇기에 그럴 이유가 전혀 없는데도 죽으셔야 했던 그 순간에도 주님은 하나님의 사랑을 노래하는 시간을 가지셨습니다. 그런 예수님을 보면서 우리 역시 무슨 일을 만나도 하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다는 확신을 가질 수 있습니다.

Singing to the Firing Squad

Two men convicted of drug trafficking had been on death row for a decade. While in prison, they learned of God’s love for them in Jesus, and their lives were transformed. When it came time for them to face the firing squad, they faced their executioners reciting the Lord’s Prayer and singing “Amazing Grace.” Because of their faith in God, through the power of the Spirit they were able to face death with incredible courage.

They followed the example of faith set by their Savior, Jesus. When Jesus knew that His death was imminent, He spent part of the evening singing with friends. It’s remarkable that He could sing under such circumstances, but what’s even more remarkable is what He sang. On that night, Jesus and his friends had a Passover meal, which always ends with a series of Psalms known as the Hallel, Psalms 113–118. Facing death, that night Jesus sang about the “cords of death” entangling Him (PSALM 116:3). Yet He praised God’s faithful love (117:2) and thanked Him for salvation (118:14). Surely these Psalms comforted Jesus on the night before His crucifixion.

Jesus’s trust in God was so great that even as He approached His own death—a death He had done nothing to deserve!—He chose to sing of God’s love. Because of Jesus, we too can have confidence that whatever we face, God is with us. AMY PETERSON

말, 그 이상

아프리카의 한 토착 언어로 성경이 번역된 것을 기념하는 봉헌식 행사에서 그 지역 추장이 성경 번역본을 증정 받았습니다. 그 추장은 토착어 성경책을 하늘 높이 들고 감사하며 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “이제 하나님께서 우리 말을 알아들으신다는 걸 알겠군요! 우리도 우리말로 성경을 읽을 수 있습니다.”

우리가 어떤 언어를 써도 하늘에 계신 우리 아버지께서는 다 알아들으십니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리는 우리의 가장 속깊은 소망을 그분께 잘 표현하지 못한다고 느낄 때가 많습니다. 바울 사도는 그런 느낌이 들더라도 상관없이 기도하라고 권면합니다. 바울은 고난의 세상과 우리 자신의 고통에 대해 말하면서 “모든 피조물이 이제까지 함께 신음하며, 함께 해산의 고통을 겪고 있다” (로마서 8:22, 새번역)고 말합니다. 그러면서 그것을 우리를 위해 일하시는 성령님의 사역에 비유하고 있습니다. “성령도 우리의 연약함을 도우시나니 우리는 마땅히 기도할 바를 알지 못하나 오직 성령이 말할 수 없는 탄식으로 우리를 위하여 친히 간구하시느니라”(26절).

하나님의 성령은 우리를 매우 잘 아십니다. 우리의 소망과 마음속의 언어, 무언의 말까지도 다 아시는 성령님은 하나님과 대화할 때 우리를 도와주십니다. 그분은 우리가 하나님 아들의 형상으로 변화되도록 이끌어주십니다(29절).

하늘에 계신 우리 아버지는 우리의 언어를 이해하시며 그분의 말씀을 통해 우리와 소통하십니다. 우리 기도가 너무 연약하고 짧다고 생각될 때, 성령님은 우리를 도와 우리를 대신하여 하나님께 간구해주십니다. 하나님은 우리가 기도로 그분께 얘기하기를 진실로 원하십니다.

Much More Than Words

At a dedication ceremony during which a Bible translated into a local African language was presented, the area chief was presented with his own copy. In appreciation, he lifted the Bible to the skies and exclaimed, “Now we know God understands our language! We can read the Bible in our own native mother-tongue.”

No matter our language, our heavenly Father understands it. But often we feel unable to express our deepest longings to Him. The apostle Paul encourages us to pray regardless of how we feel. Paul speaks of our suffering world and our own pain: “The whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth” (ROMANS 8:22), and he compares that to the Holy Spirit’s work on our behalf. “The Spirit helps us in our weakness,” he writes. “We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (V. 26).

God’s Holy Spirit knows us intimately. He knows our longings, our heart-language, and our unspoken words, and He helps us in our communication with God. His Spirit draws us to be transformed into the image of God the Son (V. 29).

Our heavenly Father understands our language and speaks to us through His Word. When we think our prayers are weak or too short, His Holy Spirit helps us by speaking through us to the Father. He yearns for us to talk with Him in prayer. LAWRENCE DARMANI

노래 부르시는 우리 하나님 아버지

우리 부부가 아이를 갖기 전에는 노래 부르는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 아무도 말해주지 않았습니다. 우리 아이들은 지금 여섯 살, 여덟 살, 열 살입니다. 그런데 아이들 셋 모두 어렸을 때에는 재우기 힘들었습니다. 아내와 나는 저녁마다 아이들이 빨리 잠들기를 기도하면서 교대로 흔들어 재웠습니다. 나는 아이들이 (제발!) 빨리 잠들라고 열심히 자장가를 부르며 흔들어주는 데 아주 많은 시간을 보냈습니다. 그런데 밤마다 아이들에게 노래를 불러주다보니 놀라운 일이 일어났습니다. 노래를 불러주면서 아이들에 대한 나의 사랑의 연대감과 기쁨이 더욱 깊어진 것입니다. 전에는 전혀 생각지도 못했던 일입니다.

성경 말씀에 하늘에 계신 아버지께서도 그의 자녀들에게 노래하는 대목이 있다는 사실을 아십니까? 내가 노래로 아이들을 달래려 했던 것처럼 스바냐도 백성들에게 노래를 불러주시는 하늘에 계시는 우리 아버지의 모습을 그리고 있습니다. “그가 너로 말미암아 기쁨을 이기지 못하시며 너를 잠잠히 사랑하시며 너로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하시리라”(3:17).

스바냐의 예언서 대부분은 하나님을 거부한 사람들에게 임하는 심판의 때를 경고하고 있습니다. 그러나 스바냐서는 그렇게 끝나지 않습니다. 스바냐는 심판으로 결론을 맺지 않고 하나님께서 그의 백성들을 고통에서 건지실(19-20절) 뿐 아니라 잠잠히 사랑하시며 그들로 말미암아 즐거이 부르며 기뻐하신다(17절)는 설명으로 끝을 맺고 있습니다.

우리 하나님은 “구원을 베푸실 전능자”(17절)이실 뿐 아니라 우리를 위해 부드러운 사랑의 노래를 부르시는 사랑의 아버지이십니다.

Our Singing Father

No one told me before my wife and I had children how important singing would be. My children are now six, eight, and ten. But all three had problems sleeping early on. Each night, my wife and I took turns rocking our little ones, praying they’d nod off quickly. I spent hundreds of hours rocking them, desperately crooning lullabies to (hopefully!) speed up the process. But as I sang over our children night after night, something amazing happened: It deepened my bond
of love and delight for them in ways I had never dreamed.

Did you know Scripture describes our heavenly Father singing over His children too? Just as I sought to soothe my children with song, so Zephaniah concludes with a portrait of our heavenly Father singing over His people: “He will take great delight in you; in his love he will . . . rejoice over you with singing” (3:17).

Much of Zephaniah’s prophetic book warns of a coming time of judgment for those who’d rejected God. Yet that’s not where it ends. Zephaniah concludes not with judgment but with a description of God not only rescuing His people from all their suffering (VV. 19–20) but also tenderly loving and rejoicing over them with song (V. 17).

Our God is not only a “Mighty Warrior who saves” and restores (V. 17) but a loving Father who tenderly sings songs of love over us. ADAM HOLZ

누구에게나 베푸는 따뜻한 환영

얼마 전 휴가 기간에 아내와 함께 유명한 운동경기장에 갔습니다. 들어가는 문 모두가 활짝 열려 있어서 우리를 환영하는 것 같았습니다. 구내를 둘러보고 또 관리가 잘 되어 있는 경기장 모습에 감탄하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈지요. 막 떠나려고 하는데 어떤 사람이 우리를 멈춰 세우더니 여기 들어오면 안 된다고 냉랭하게
말했습니다. 갑자기 우리가 침입자라는 생각이 들어 마음이 불편해졌습니다.

그 휴가 중에 우리는 한 교회도 방문 했습니다. 여기도 문이 모두 열려 있어서 걸어 들어갔습니다. 그런데 어찌 이렇게 다를 수가 있을까요! 많은 사람들이 우리를 따뜻하게 맞아주어 마치 집에 온 것 같은 느낌이 들었습니다. 예배를 마치고 나오면서 우리는 진정 환영 받고 교우로서 받아들여졌다는 것을 느꼈습니다.

안타까운 사실은 외부인들이 어떤 교회를 방문하면 “여기는 당신이 올 곳이 아닙니다”라는 무언의 메시지를 받기도 한다는 것입니다. 그러나 성경은 우리에게 모든 사람들을 따뜻하게 맞으라고 말합니다. 예수님은 우리 이웃을 우리 자신과 같이 사랑하라 하셨는데 이것은 분명 그들을 우리 삶 속에, 그리고 교회 안으로 따뜻하게 맞아들이라는 의미입니다 (마태복음 22:39). 히브리서는 “손님 대접하기를 잊지 말라”(13:2)고 우리를 일깨워줍니다. 누가와 바울도 교제나 물질이 필요한 사람들을 적극적으로 사랑하라고 가르칩니다(누가복음 14:13-14; 로마서 12:13). 우리에게는 믿음의 지체들을 사랑해야 할 특별한 책임이 있습니다 (갈라디아서 6:10).

우리가 그리스도의 사랑으로 마음을 열어 모든 사람들을 따뜻하게 맞이할 때 우리는 우리 구주의 사랑과 긍휼하심을 보여주는 것입니다.

A Warm Welcome for All

During a recent vacation, my wife and I visited a famous athletic complex. The gates were wide open, and it appeared that we were welcome to visit. We enjoyed touring the grounds and admiring the well-manicured sports fields. As we were about to leave, someone stopped us and coldly told us we were not supposed to be there. Suddenly, we were reminded that we were outsiders—and it felt uncomfortable.

On that vacation we also visited a church. Again, the doors were open, so we walked in. What a difference! Many people greeted us warmly and made us feel right at home. We walked out of that church service knowing we were welcomed and accepted.

Sadly, it isn’t uncommon for outsiders to receive the unspoken message “you’re not supposed to be here” when they visit a church. But Scripture calls us to be hospitable to all. Jesus said we are to love our neighbors as ourselves, which surely means welcoming them into our lives and our churches (MATTHEW 22:39). In Hebrews, we’re reminded to “show hospitality to strangers” (13:2). Both Luke and Paul instruct us to show active love to people with social and physical needs (LUKE 14:13–14; ROMANS 12:13). And among the body of believers, we have a special responsibility to show love (GALATIANS 6:10).

When we welcome all people openly and with Christlike love, we reflect our Savior’s love and compassion. DAVE BRANON

반짝반짝

“반짝반짝 작은 별”이라는 노래는 영국의 자장가입니다. 그 가사는 원래 제인 테일러의 시로, “세상 위 아주 높은 곳”에 별들이 달려있는 경이로운 하나님의 우주를 노래하고 있습니다. 시의 뒷부분은 널리 알려지지 않았는데, 거기에 보면 별이 길 안내자 역할을 합니다. “밝고 작은 반짝임이 어둠 속의 나그네를 비춰주네.”

빌립보서에서 바울은 빌립보 신자들 에게 복음의 좋은 소식을 주위 사람들에게 전해서 “하늘의 별처럼 빛”나면서 흠 없이 깨끗하고 순수하게 살아야 한다고
촉구하고 있습니다( 2 : 1 5 - 1 6 , 현대인의 성경). 우리는 어떻게 하면 별처럼 빛날 수 있을까요? 우리는 종종 스스로 부족하다고 느끼고, 우리의 “빛”이 과연 변화를 줄 수 있을 만큼 밝은지 고심합니다. 그러나 별은 굳이 별이 되려고 ‘애쓰지’ 않습니다. 그냥 별일 뿐입니다. 빛이 세상을 변화시키고 또 우리를 변화시킵니다. 하나님은 이 세상에 물리적인 빛을 주셨습니다 (창세기 1:3) 그리고 하나님은 예수님을 통해 우리 삶 속에 영적인 빛을 가져다주십니다(요한복음 1:1-4).

마음속에 하나님의 빛을 지니고 있는 우리는 주변 사람들이 빛을 보고 그 빛의 근원으로 이끌릴 수 있을 만큼 밝게 비추어질 수밖에 없습니다. 별이 밤하늘에 별 노력 없이 쉽게 달려 있는 것처럼, 우리의 빛도 그것이 주님이 발하시는 빛이기 때문에 변화를 일으키는 것입니다. 우리가 단순히 빛을 발할 때, 우리는 칠흑같이 어두운 세상에서 “생명의 말씀을 굳게 잡으라”는 바울의 지시를 따르는 것이며, 그럼으로써 다른 사람들을 우리 소망의 근원이신 예수님께로 인도하게 됩니다.

Twinkle

“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” is an English lullaby. Its lyrics, originally a poem by Jane Taylor, capture the wonder of God’s universe where stars hang “up above the world so high.” In the rarely published later stanzas, the star acts as a guide: “As your bright and tiny spark lights the traveler in the dark.”

In Philippians, Paul challenges believers in Philippi to be blameless and pure as they “shine . . . like stars in the sky” while offering the good news of the gospel to all around them (2:15–16). We wonder how we can shine like stars. We often feel inadequate and struggle to think our “light” is bright enough to make a difference. But stars don’t try to be stars. They just are. Light changes our world. And it changes us. God brought physical light into our world (GENESIS 1:3); and through Jesus, God brings spiritual light into our lives (JOHN 1:1–4).

We who have God’s light in us are to shine in such a way that those around us see light and are drawn to its source. As effortlessly as a star hanging in the night sky, our light makes a difference because of what it is: Light! When we simply shine, we follow Paul’s directive to “hold firmly to the word of life” in a world in deep darkness, and we draw others to the source of our hope: Jesus. ELISA MORGAN

전보다 더 낫게

스코틀랜드 어느 주막에서 있었던 일입니다. 그날도 연어 낚시꾼들이 하루 종일 낚시를 하고 난 후 그 주막에 모여 있었습니다. 한 친구가 자신이 낚아 올린 연어를 묘사하다가 팔이 탁자를 쓸며 유리잔을 벽으로 날려, 그 잔이 산산조각나면서 흰색 석고 벽면에 얼룩을 남기고 말았습니다. 그는 주막 주인에게 사과하면서 훼손된 벽을 변상하겠다고 했지만 이미 망가진 벽은 어쩔 수가 없었습니다. 그때 근처에 앉아있던 한 손님이 “걱정 마십시오.” 라고 하면서 일어나 주머니에서 그림 도구를 꺼내더니 더러워진 얼룩의 주변에 스케치를 하기 시작했습니다. 이윽고 거기에 아주 멋진 수사슴의 머리가 나타났습니다. 그 사람은 바로 스코틀랜드 최고의 동물 화가인 E. H. 랜시어 경이었습니다.

시편 51편을 쓴 걸출한 이스라엘왕 다윗은 그가 지은 죄로 말미암아 자신과 나라에 큰 수치를 불러왔습니다. 다윗 왕은 친구의 아내와 간음을 했고, 또 간계를 꾸며 그 친구를 죽게 했습니다. 둘 다 죽음을 받아 마땅한 죄였지요. 그가 삶을 다 망쳐버린 듯 보였습니다. 그러나 다윗은 하나님께 매달리며 간절히 기도했습니다.
“주의 구원의 즐거움을 내게 회복시켜 주시고 자원하는 심령을 주사 나를 붙드소서”(12절).

우리도 다윗처럼 과거의 부끄러운 행동들과 그 기억들, 그리고 밤에 자다가도 떠올라 우리를 괴롭히는 생각들이 있습니다. 그때 하지 않았더라면 또는 다시 할 수 있다면 하는 일들이 우리에게 너무나 많습니다.

그러나 우리에게는 죄를 용서할 뿐 아니라 죄를 통해 우리를 전보다 더 나은 사람이 되게 해주는 은혜가 있습니다. 하나님은 아무것도 헛되이 버리지 않으십니다.

Better Than Ever

The story is told of a group of salmon fishermen who gathered in a Scottish inn after a long day of fishing. As one was describing a catch to his friends, his arm swept across the table and knocked a glass against the wall, shattering it and leaving a stain on the white plaster surface. The man apologized to the innkeeper and offered to pay for the damage, but there was nothing he could do; the wall was ruined. A man seated nearby said, “Don't worry.” Rising, he took a painting implement from his pocket and began to sketch around the ugly stain. Slowly there emerged the head of a magnificent stag. The man was Sir E. H. Landseer, Scotland’s foremost animal artist.

David, Israel’s illustrious king who penned Psalm 51, brought shame on himself and his nation by his sins. He committed adultery with the wife of one of his friends and engineered the death of that friend—both deeds worthy of death. It would seem his life was ruined. But he pled with God: “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me” (V. 12).

Like David we have shameful acts in our past and the memories that accompany them, recollections that taunt us in the middle of the night. There’s so much we wish we could undo or redo.

There is a grace that not only forgives sin but also uses it to make us better than before. God wastes nothing. DAVID H. ROPER

용감하게 맞서다

테레사 프리케로바는 제2차 세계대전 초기 나치가 조국 폴란드를 침공할 당시 십대 소녀였습니다. 그리고 이웃에 살던 유태인들이 나치에게 체포되어 사라지기 시작하면서 유태인 대학살 홀로코스트가 시작되었습니다. 테레사는 다른 폴란드 사람들과 함께 목숨을 걸고 유태인 이웃들을 바르샤바 게토(주: 제2차 세계대전 중 나치 독일이 유태인들을 각 수용소로 보내기 전에 강제로 입주시켰던 바르샤바의 구역)로부터, 그리고 나치의 숙청으로부터 구했습니다. 테레사는 나중에

우리는 무엇을 위해 그렇게 용감하게 맞설 수 있을까요? 불의에 맞서 싸울 수도 있고, 주위의 연약하거나 억울한 피해를 입은 사람들을 위해 대신 나설 수도 있습니다. 우리는 어떤 형태의 싸움에서도 용기를 낼 수 있습니다. 하나님께서 우리가 그분 편에 서서 악과 맞서는데 필요한 모든 것을 이미 주셨기 때문입니다.

Courageous Stand

Teresa Prekerowa was just a teenager when the Nazis invaded her native Poland at the dawn of World War II. This was in the beginnings of the Holocaust when her Jewish neighbors began to disappear—arrested by the Nazis. So Teresa and other Polish countrymen risked their lives to rescue those neighbors from the Warsaw ghetto and the Nazi purge. Teresa would become one of the premier historians of the war and the Holocaust, but it was her courage to stand against the tide of evil that would list her with the Righteous Among the Nations at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.

Courage is needed to stand against evil. Paul told the church at Ephesus, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil” (EPHESIANS 6:12). Clearly this unseen opposition is more than any of us can face alone, so God has given us the necessary spiritual resources (the “full armor of God”) to enable us to “stand against the devil’s schemes” (V. 11).

What might that courageous stand involve? It may be working against injustice or intervening on behalf of someone you know who is vulnerable or victimized. Whatever form the conflict may take, we can have courage—our God has already provided what we need to stand for Him and against evil. BILL CROWDER

도움을 요청하는 방법

하루 종일 바빴던 어느 날 늦은 시간에 친구에게서 이메일이 왔지만 열어보지 않았습니다. 그 시간에 늦게까지 중병에 걸린 가족을 돌보아주고 있었기 때문에 다른 사람들에게 신경 쓸 겨를이 없었던 것입니다.

다음 날 아침 친구가 보낸 메시지를 열어보니 뜻밖에도 이렇게 묻고 있었습니다. “내가 뭐라도 도와줄 일이 없을까?” 왠지 부끄러운 마음에 즉시 괜찮다고 답하려고 하다가 잠시 숨을 돌리고 생각해보았습니다. 이 친구의 물음이 하나님의 음성과도 흡사하게 귀에 익은 말로 들렸습니다.

바로 예수님이 그렇게 물으셨으니까요. 여리고로 가는 길에서 예수님은 눈 먼 거지가 주님께 부르짖는 소리를 듣고 잠시 멈추시어 바디매오라는 그 맹인에게 도움을 원하느냐고 물으신 것입니다. 예수님은 그때 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “네게 무엇을 하여 주기를 원하느냐”(마가복음 10:51).

정말 놀라운 물음입니다. 이는 치유자이신 예수님께서 진정 우리를 돕고 싶어 하신다는 것을 보여줍니다. 하지만 무엇보다도 우리가 먼저 주님의 도움이 필요하다는 절박한 현실을 인정하는 겸손한 자세를 취해야합니다. 거지가 “직업”인 바디매오는 가난하고 외롭고, 아마도 배도 고프고 낙심에 차있어 정말 누군가의 도움이 필요했습니다. 그렇지만 그는 새로운 삶을 갈망하며 예수님께 그저 단순히 가장 근본적인 도움을 청했습니다. “선생님, 제가 보기를 원합니다.”

맹인에게 그것은 솔직한 간구였습니다. 예수님은 그를 즉시 고쳐주셨습니다. 내 친구 역시 내게 그런 솔직함을 바랐을 것입니다. 그래서 친구에게 이렇게 답장했습니다. 내게 기본적으로 필요한 것이 무엇인지를 놓고 기도해보고, 꼭 겸손한 마음으로 부탁하겠노라고 말해주십시오. 오늘 당신에게 기본적으로 필요한 것이 무엇인지 아십니까? 만일 친구가 물어오면 바로 그걸 말해주십시오. 그리고 그 간구를 더 높은 곳에, 하나님께 직접 말씀드리십시오.

Asking for Help

Her email arrived late in a long day. In truth, I didn’t open it. I was working overtime to help a family member manage his serious illness. I didn’t have time, therefore, for social distractions.

The next morning, however, when I clicked on my friend’s message, I saw this question: “Can I help you in any way?” Feeling embarrassed, I started to answer no. Then I took a deep breath to pause. I noticed then that her question sounded familiar—if not divine.

That’s because Jesus asked it. Hearing a blind beggar call out to Him on the Jericho Road, Jesus stopped to ask this man, named Bartimaeus, a similar question. Can I help? Or as Jesus said: “What do you want me to do for you?” (MARK 10:51).

The question is stunning. It shows the Healer, Jesus, longs to help us. But first, we’re invited to admit needing Him—a humbling step. The “professional” beggar Bartimaeus was needy, indeed—poor, alone, and possibly hungry and down-cast. But wanting a new life, he simply told Jesus his most
basic need. “Rabbi,” he said, “I want to see.”

For a blind man, it was an honest plea. Jesus healed him immediately. My friend sought such honesty from me too. So I promised her I’d pray to understand my basic need and, more important, I’d humbly tell her. Do you know your basic need today? When a friend asks, tell it. Then take your plea even higher.
