식어지는 동정심

안네 프랑크는 제2차 세계대전 중 가족과 숨어 지냈던 몇 년의 날들을 기록한 일기로 유명합니다. 그녀와 함께 나치 강제수용소에 갇혀있던 사람들은 “그 아이는 우리를 생각하며 눈물이 마를 날이 없었습니다. 그 아이가 함께 있는 것이 그를 아는 모든 사람들에게 축복 이었습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그런 이유로 케네스 베일리라는 학자는 안네는 결코 “동정심이 식어진” 적이 없었을 것이라고 했습니다.

너무나 험한 세상에 살다 보면 동정하는 마음이 식을 수 있습니다. 아무리 선한 의도를 가진 사람이라 할지라도 인간의 크나큰 고난 앞에서 동정심이 무뎌질 수 있습니다. 그러나 예수님의 동정심은 식지 않았습니다. 마태복음 9:35-36은 이렇게 말합니다. “예수께서 모든 도시와 마을에 두루 다니사 그들의 회당에서 가르치시며 천국 복음을 전파하시며 모든 병과 모든 약한 것을 고치시니라 무리를 보시고 불쌍히 여기시니 이는 그들이 목자 없는 양과 같이 고생하며 기진함이라.”

우리는 이 세상에서 물질이나 신체적인 어려움 뿐 아니라 영적인 문제로 고통을 받습니다. 그런 부족함을 채우러 오신 예수님은 이 일에 제자들도 동참할 것을 요구하셨습니다(37-38절). 예수님은 우리 주위에 고독이나 죄, 병으로 고생하는 모든 사람들을 도울 수 있는 일꾼들을 세워달라고 하나님 아버지께 기도하셨습니다. 하나님 아버지께서 우리에게 그분의 마음으로 다른 사람들을 볼 수 있는 마음을 주시기를 기도합니다. 성령님께서 힘주시면 우리도 고난을 겪고 있는 사람들에게 주님의 긍휼을 보여줄 수 있습니다.

Compassion Fatigue

Anne Frank is well known for her diary describing her family’s years of hiding during World War II. When she was later imprisoned in a Nazi death camp, those with her said “her tears [for them] never ran dry,” making her “a blessed presence for all who knew her.” Because of this, scholar Kenneth Bailey concluded that Anne never displayed “compassion fatigue.”

Compassion fatigue can be one of the results of living in a badly broken world. The sheer volume of human suffering can numb even the best intentioned among us. Compassion fatigue, however, was not in Jesus’s makeup. Matthew 9:35–36 says, “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”

Our world suffers not only from physical needs but also from spiritual brokenness. Jesus came to meet that need and challenged His followers to join Him in this work (VV. 37–38). He prayed that the Father would raise up workers to respond to the needs all around us—people who struggle with loneliness, sin, and illness. May the Father give us a heart for others that mirrors His heart. In the strength of His Spirit, we can express His compassionate concern to those who are suffering. BILL CROWDER

어둠 속의 소망

중국 역사에 나오는 츄유안(굴원)은 전국시대(기원전 475-246년)에 살았던 지혜롭고 충성스러운 관리였습니다. 그가 나라를 멸망시킬 수도 있는 위협을 왕에게 거듭 경고했지만 왕은 이 충신의 말을 무시했다고 합니다. 마침내 굴원은 추방당했습니다. 그가 위험하다고 경고한대로 적에게 사랑하는 조국이 무너졌다는 소식을 듣고 나서 굴원은 스스로 생을 마감했습니다.

굴원의 삶은 몇 가지 면에서 예레미야 선지자와 닮았습니다. 예레미야 역시 그의 경고를 무시했던 왕들을 섬겼고, 나라는 유린되었습니다. 그러나 굴원이 절망에 굴복했던 것과는 달리 예레미야는 진정한 희망을 찾았습니다. 왜 그런 차이가 생긴 것일까요?

예레미야는 유일한 참 소망을 주시는 분은 주님이라는 것을 알았습니다. 하나님은 그가 택한 선지자에게 이렇게 확신시켜 주셨습니다. “너의 장래에 소망이 있을 것이라 너의 자녀가 자기들의 지경으로 돌아오리라”(예레미야 31:17). 비록 예루살렘이 기원전 586년에 멸망당하기는 했지만 나중에 다시 건축되었습니다 (느헤미야 6:15 참조).

어느 순간 우리 모두는 절망적인 상황에 처할 때가 있습니다. 의료검진 결과가 나쁠 수도 있고 갑자기 직장을 잃는다거나 가정이 깨어질 수도 있습니다. 그러나 살면서 우리가 완전히 엎어질 때라도 하나님이 천국의 권좌에 앉아 계시기 때문에 우리는 여전히 위를 바라볼 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 살아가는 날들을 손으로 붙드시고 그분의 가슴에 우리를 품어주십니다.

Hope in the Darkness

According to legend, Qu Yuan was a wise and patriotic Chinese government official who lived during the time known as the Warring States period (475–246 BC ). It has been said that he tried repeatedly to warn his king about an impending threat that would destroy the country, but the king rejected his advice. Eventually,

Qu Yuan was exiled. When he learned about the fall of his beloved country to the foe he had warned about, he ended his life. Qu Yuan’s life resembles some aspects of the life of the prophet Jeremiah. He too served kings who scorned his warnings, and his country was ravaged. However, while Qu Yuan gave in to his despair, Jeremiah found genuine hope. Why the difference?

Jeremiah knew the Lord who offers the only true hope. “There is hope for your descendants,” God had assured His prophet. “Your children will return to their own land” (JEREMIAH 31:17). Although Jerusalem was destroyed in 586 bc , it was later rebuilt (SEE NEHEMIAH 6:15).

At some point, we all find ourselves in situations that can cause us to despair. It could be a bad medical report, a sudden job loss, a shattered family. But when life knocks us down, we can still look up—for God is on the throne! He holds our days in His hands, and He holds us close to His heart. POH FANG CHIA

서로 다른 의견을 인정하기

성경 해석의 차이로 벌어지는 끝없는 논쟁을 끝내기란 정말 어려운 일이라고 하시던 아버지 말씀이 기억납니다. 한편 아버지는 서로의 이견을 인정하는 것이 얼마나 유익한지도 말씀해주셨습니다.

그러나 정말 많은 이해관계가 걸려 있는데도 서로 타협할 수 없는 이견 논쟁을 밀어두는 것이 가능할까요? 이 질문에 대하여 바울 사도가 로마서에서 답을 내 놓았습니다. 사회적, 정치적, 종교적 갈등을 겪고 있는 사람들에게 편지하면서, 바울은 극단적인 분열 상황에서도 합의점에 이르는 방법을 제시하고 있습니다(14:5-6).

바울에 따르면 이견을 인정할 수 있는 좋은 방법은 우리 자신의 의견뿐만 아니라 의견이 다른 사람들을 어떻게 대했는가에 대해서도 우리 모두가 나중에 주님 앞에서 대답해야 한다는 점을 상기하는 것입니다(10절).

갈등이 있는 상황은 실제로 우리 자신의 의견은 물론 우리 자신의 성경 해석보다 더 중요한 어떤 의견이나 해석이 있을 수 있다는 사실을 기억하게 되는 기회가 될 수 있습니다. 언젠가 우리 모두는 그리스도께서 우리를 사랑하셨듯이 과연 우리가 서로 사랑했는지, 원수까지도 사랑했는지 답을 해야 합니다.

지금 그 점을 다시 생각하면, 나는 지난 날 아버지께서 단지 이견을 인정하는 데 그치지 않고 서로 사랑하고 존경하는 마음을 가지고 남의 의견을 인정하는 것이 얼마나 좋은 일인지에 대해 자주 하시던 말씀을 기억합니다.

Agreeing to Disagree

I remember hearing my dad talk about how difficult it was to walk away from unending arguments over differing interpretations of the Bible. By contrast he recalled how good it was when both sides agreed to disagree.

But is it really possible to set aside irreconcilable differences when so much seems to be at stake? That’s one of the questions the apostle Paul answers in his New Testament letter to the Romans. Writing to readers caught in social, political, and religious conflict, he suggests ways of finding common ground even under the most polarized conditions (14:5–6).

According to Paul, the way to agree to disagree is to recall that each of us will answer to the Lord not only for our opinions but also for how we treat one another in our differences (V. 10).

Conditions of conflict can actually become occasions to remember that there are some things more important than our own ideas—even more than our interpretations of the Bible. All of us will answer for whether we have loved one another, and even our enemies, as Christ loved us.

Now that I think of it, I remember that my dad used to talk about how good it is not just to agree to disagree but to do so with mutual love and respect. MART DEHAAN

감사를 제대로 하려면

여러 해 동안 만성 통증과 몸을 제대로 움직이지 못하면서 온 좌절감에 지칠 대로 지친 나는 결국 더 이상 견디지 못하게 되었습니다. 불만에 가득 차서 무슨 일에나 떼를 쓰기만하고 감사할 줄 모르게 되었습니다. 남편이 해주는 병 수발에 대해 불평하기 시작했고, 그가 집안 청소하는 것도 트집 잡았으며, 내게는 언제나 최고의 요리사였던 남편이 차려주는 식단조차 다양하지 않다고 불평했습니다. 참다못한 남편이 나의 불평으로 상처받았다고 얘기했지만 나는 화가 났습니다. 남편은 내가 어떤 상황을 겪고 있는지 전혀 이해하지 못했습니다. 결국 하나님의 도움으로 나의 잘못을 깨닫게 되고 나서 남편과 주님에게 용서를 구했습니다.

누구나 처한 상황이 변하기를 몹시 갈망하면 불평이 생길 수 있습니다. 심지어 인간관계도 파괴적인 자기중심주의로 바뀔 수 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성들도 그 딜레마를 잘 보여주었습니다. 그들은 언제나 만족할 줄 몰랐던 것 같습니다. 하나님이 마련해주시는 양식 공급에 불평만 했으니까요(출애굽기 17:1-3). 광야에서 그의 백성들을 위하여 “하늘에서 양식을” 내려 보내면서 보살펴주셨지만(16:4) 백성들은 다른 음식이 먹고 싶어진 것입니다(민수기 11:4). 하나님이 신실하신 사랑의 보살핌을 날마다 기적으로 보여주셨지만 그들은 기뻐하기는커녕 더 많은 것, 더 좋은 것, 다른 것, 심지어 그들이 과거에 가졌던 것까지 바랐습니다(4-6절). 그들은 자기들의 좌절감을 온통 모세에게 쏟아냈습니다(10-14절).

하나님의 선하심과 신실하심을 신뢰하면 감사하는 일을 더 잘 할 수 있습니다. 오늘 우리는 셀 수 없이 많은 방식으로 우리를 보살펴주시는 하나님께 감사드려야 합니다.

Getting a Grip on Gratitude

The years of weariness caused by chronic pain and frustrations with my limited mobility had finally caught up with me. In my discontent, I became demanding and ungrateful. I began complaining about my husband’s caregiving skills. I griped about the way he cleaned the house. Even though he’s the best cook I know, I fussed about the lack of variety in our meals. When he finally shared that my grumbling hurt his feelings, I was resentful. He had no idea what I was going through. Eventually, God helped me see my wrongs, and I asked my husband and the Lord for forgiveness.

Longing for different circumstances can lead to complaining, and even a form of relationship damaging self-centeredness. The Israelites were familiar with this dilemma. It seems they were never satisfied and always griping about God’s provision (EXODUS 17:1–3). Even though the Lord cared for His people in the wilderness by sending them “bread from heaven” (16:4), they began craving other food (NUMBERS 11:4). Instead of rejoicing over the daily miracles of God’s faithful and loving care, the Israelites wanted something more, something better, something different, or even something they used to have (VV. 4–6). They took out their frustrations on Moses (VV. 10–14).

Trusting God’s goodness and faithfulness can help us get a good grip on gratitude. Today we can thank Him for the countless ways He cares for us. XOCHITL DIXON

내 뜻이 아닌 주님의 뜻

카밀과 조엘은 8살 난 딸 리마가 희귀한 백혈병 판정을 받자 망연자실했습니다. 그 병으로 수막염과 뇌졸중도 앓게 되면서 리마는 혼수상태에 빠졌습니다. 병원 의료진은 부모에게 리마가 살아날 확률이 1퍼센트도 되지 않으니 장례준비를 하라고 권했습니다.

카밀과 조엘은 금식하고 기도하면서 기적이 일어나기를 바랐습니다. 카밀이 말했습니다. “기도할 때 우리는 무슨 일이 있어도 하나님을 믿어야 해. 그리고 내 뜻이 아닌 하나님 아버지의 뜻대로 되기를 기도했던 예수님처럼 기도해야 돼.” 조엘은 솔직하게 대답했습니다. “그런데 난 하나님이 딸을 고쳐주시길 너무너무 원해요.” 그러자 카밀은 이렇게 말했습니다. “맞아! 우리는 간구해야 돼! 하지만 힘들 때조차도 우리 자신을 주님께 온전히 드리면 그것이 그분을 높여 드리는 거야. 예수님께서 그렇게 하셨으니까.”

예수님은 십자가를 지시기 전에 기도하셨습니다. “아버지여 만일 아버지의 뜻이거든 이 잔을 내게서 옮기시옵소서 그러나 내 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 되기를 원하나이다”(누가복음 22:42). “이 잔을 옮기시옵소서”라고 기도하시면서 예수님은 십자가로 나아가지 않게 되기를 간구했습니다. 그러나 주님은 사랑하는 마음으로 하나님 아버지께 순종하셨습니다.

우리가 바라는 것을 하나님께 맡긴다는 것이 쉬운 일은 아닙니다. 그리고 시련의 순간마다 하나님의 지혜를 이해한다는 것도 힘든 일입니다. 그러나 카밀과 조엘의 기도는 놀라운 방법으로 응답받았습니다. 리마는 지금 건강한 15세 소녀입니다.

예수님은 모든 어려움을 이해하십니다. 주님의 간구가 우리를 위해 응답되지 않았을 때에도, 주님은 모든 어려운 일에 우리 하나님을 어떻게 신뢰해야 하는지 보여주셨습니다.

Your Way, Not Mine

Kamil and Joelle were devastated when their eight-year-old daughter Rima was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. The disease led to meningitis and a stroke, and Rima lapsed into a coma. The hospital medical team counseled her parents to make arrangements for Rima’s funeral, giving her less than a one percent chance of survival.

Kamil and Joelle fasted and prayed for a miracle. “As we pray,” Kamil said, “we need to trust God no matter what. And pray like Jesus—not my way, Father, but Yours.” “But I want so much for God to heal her!” Joelle answered honestly. “Yes! And we should ask!” Kamil responded. “But it honors God when we give ourselves to Him even when it’s hard, because that’s what Jesus did.”

Before Jesus went to the cross, He prayed: “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done” (LUKE 22:42). By praying “take this cup,” Jesus asked not to go to the cross; but He submitted to the Father out of love.

Surrendering our desires to God isn’t easy, and His wisdom can be difficult to understand in challenging moments. Kamil and Joelle’s prayers were answered in a remarkable way—Rima is a healthy fifteen year old today.

Jesus understands every struggle. Even when, for our sake, His request was not answered, He showed us how to trust our God in every need. JAMES BANKS

뜻밖의 친절

친구가 식품 값을 계산하려고 기다리고 있을 때, 앞에 있던 남자가 돌아서더니 10파운드(14달러)짜리 상품권을 건네주었습니다. 수면부족이었던 친구는 그 사람의 친절한 행동에 그만 왈칵 눈물을 쏟았습니다. 그리곤 이내 울음을 터트린 자신의 행동에 웃음이 나왔습니다. 사실 이 뜻밖의 친절은 친구를 감동시켰고 지쳐 있었던 그 시기에 희망을 주었습니다. 그녀는 다른 사람을 통하여 선한 친절을 베풀게 하신 주님께 감사를 드렸습니다.

베풂이라는 주제는 바울 사도가 에베소의 이방인 기독교인들에게 쓴 서신에 잘 나타나 있습니다. 바울은 그들에게 옛 삶을 버리고 새로운 삶을 받아들이라고 권 유 하 면 서 당 신 들 은 이 미 은혜로 구원받았다고 말하고 있습니다. 그는 이 구원의 은혜로부터 “선한 일을 하고자하는” 의욕이 우러나오는데, 이는 우리가 하나님의 형상대로 창조되었고 그분이 “손으로 만드신 작품”이기 때문이라고(2:10) 설명합니다. 수퍼마켓의 남자처럼 우리도 일상적인 행동으로 하나님의 사랑을 전파할 수 있습니다.

물론, 하나님의 은혜를 나눌 때 반드시 물질적인 것을 베풀어야 하는 것은 아니고, 여러 가지 다른 행동으로 하나님의 사랑을 보여줄 수 있습니다. 시간을 내어 남의 말을 들어줄 수도 있고, 우리를 위해 봉사하는 사람에게 안부 인사를 물을 수도 있으며, 하던 일을 멈추고 어려움에 처한 사람을 도울 수도 있습니다. 우리가 다른 사람에게 베풀면 그만큼 기쁨을 돌려 받게 됩니다(사도행전 20:35).

Unexpected Kindness

My friend was waiting to pay for her groceries when the man in front of her turned around and handed her a voucher for £10 ($14) off her bill. Short on sleep, she burst into tears because of his kind act; then she started laughing at herself for crying. This unexpected kindness touched her heart and gave her hope during a period of exhaustion. She gave thanks to the Lord for His goodness extended to her through another person.

The theme of giving was one the apostle Paul wrote about in his letter to gentile Christians in Ephesus. He called them to leave their old lives behind and embrace the new, saying that they were saved by grace. Out of this saving grace, he explained, flows our desire to “do good works,” for we have been created in God’s image and are His “handiwork” (2:10). We, like the man at the supermarket, can spread God’s love through our everyday actions.

Of course, we don’t have to give material things to share God’s grace; we can show His love through many other actions. We can take the time to listen to someone when they speak to us. We can ask someone who is serving us how they are. We can stop to help someone in need. As we give to others, we’ll receive joy in return (ACTS 20:35). AMY BOUCHER PYE

위대한 절정

부모님은 내가 컨트리 음악부터 고전음악까지 어떤 장르의 음악도 다 좋아하도록 가르쳐주셨습니다. 그래서 모스크바 국립 교향악단의 연주를 들으려고 러시아의 웅장한 뮤직홀 중 하나인 모스크바 음악원으로 걸어 들어가면서 내 심장은 빠르게 뛰었습니다. 지휘자를 따라 단원들이 거장 차이코프스키의 작품을 연주할 때 주제 부분이 점점 강해지더니 강력한 절정을 이루고, 아주 심오하고 감동적인 음악적 클라이맥스에 도달했습니다. 그 황홀한 순간 청중은 기립하여 환호를 보냈습니다.

성경 66권은 모두 역사상 가장 강력한 절정을 향해 쓰여져 있습니다. 바로 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활입니다. 에덴동산에서 아담과 하와가 죄에 빠진 순간부터 하나님은 구세주가 오실 것을 약속해주셨으며(창세기 3:15), 구약성경 전체를 통해 이 주제는 이어지고 있습니다. 다시 말하면 그 언약은 유월절 양에서(출애굽기 12:21), 선지자들의 예언에서(베드로전서 1:10), 그리고 하나님에 속한 백성들의 갈망 속에서 계속 울려온 것입니다.

요한1서 4장 14절은 이 이야기가 어디서부터 진행되어왔는지 확인해줍니다. “하나님 아버지께서 자기 아들을 세상의 구주로 보내신 것을 우리가 보았고 또 증거하였습니다”(새번역). 하나님은 어떻게 이 무너진 세상을 구하시겠다는 약속을 이루셨나요? 예수님이 죽으시고 부활하셔서 우리를 용서하시고 창조주와의 관계를 회복시켜주셨습니다. 그리고 언젠가 주님이 다시 오셔서 주님이 창조하신 우주만물을 회복시키실 것입니다.

하나님의 아들 예수님이 우리를 위해 하신 일을 기억하면서, 우리는 하나님의 은총과 구원의 위대한 절정이신 예수님을 찬양합니다.

하나님 아버지, 예수님은 하나님이 만든 이 세상에 무엇보다도 큰 영향을 끼쳤습니다. 나를 구원하러 오셨던 주님께서 다시 오셔서 하나님의 세상을 회복시켜 주실테니 감사드립니다.

선물로 주신 예수님을 찬송하자!

The Great Crescendo

My parents taught me to love all sorts of music—from country to classical. So my heart beat rapidly as I walked into the Moscow Conservatory, one of Russia’s great music halls, to hear the Moscow National Symphony. As the conductor drove the musicians through a masterful Tchaikovsky piece, themes developed that gradually built to a powerful crescendo—a profound and dramatic musical climax. It was a magical moment, and the audience stood to roar its approval.

The Scriptures move toward the most powerful crescendo of history: the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the moments following Adam and Eve’s fall into sin in the garden of Eden, God promised that a Redeemer would come (GENESIS 3:15), and throughout the Old Testament that theme moved forward. The promise rang out in the Passover lamb (EXODUS 12:21), the hopes of the prophets (1 PETER 1:10), and the longings of the people of God.

First John 4:14 confirms where that story had been going: “We have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.” How? God accomplished His promised rescue of His broken world when Jesus died and rose again to forgive us and restore us to our Creator. And one day He will come again and restore His whole creation.

As we remember what God’s Son has done for us, we celebrate the great crescendo of God’s grace and rescue for us and His world—Jesus! BILL CROWDER

평화는 어디 있소?

“당신은 아직도 평화에 희망을 두고 있습니까?” 1984년에 한 기자가 밥 딜런에게 물었습니다.

“평화는 더 이상 없을 것입니다.” 딜런의 대답이었습니다. 그 대답에 비난이 쏟아졌지만 평화는 어느 때고 오기 어렵다는 현실을 부인할 수 없습니다.

그리스도께서 오시기 약 600년 전, 대부분의 선지자들이 평화를 예언했습니다. 그러나 하나님의 선지자 예레미야는 달랐습니다. 그는 백성들에게 “내 목소리를 들으라 그리하면 나는 너희 하나님이 되겠고 너희는 내 백성이 되리라”(예레미야 7:23) 는 하나님의 말씀을 상기시켜주었습니다. 그러나 백성들은 반복하여 주님과 주님의 계명을 무시했습니다. 거짓 선지자들은 “평강하다 평강하다”(8:11)고 말했지만 예레미야는 재앙을 예언했습니다. 주전 586년에 예루살렘은 함락됐습니다.

평강은 쉽게 나타나지 않습니다. 차라리 끔찍한 예언을 담은 예레미야의 책에서 끈질지게 사랑하시는 하나님을 발견합니다. 하나님은 거역하는 백성들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 영원한 사랑으로 너를 사랑하기에......내가 다시 너를 세우리니 네가 세움을 입을 것이요” (31:3-4).

하나님은 사랑과 평강의 하나님이십니다. 갈등은 우리가 하나님을 거역하기 때문에 일어납니다. 죄악은 이 세상의 평화를 파괴하고 우리 각자에게서 마음의 평화를 빼앗아버립니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 것은 우리와 하나님을 화해시켜서 우리에게 내적인 평화를 주시기 위함입니다. “그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리자”라고 바울 사도는 기록했습니다(로마서 5:1). 이것은 이제까지 쓰인 글 중 가장 희망에 찬 것 중 하나입니다.

우리가 전쟁터에서 살든지 전쟁소문이 전혀 없는 평화로운 지역에서 살든지, 그리스도는 우리를 그분의 평강으로 초대하십니다.

Where Is Peace?

“Do you still hope for peace?” a journalist asked Bob Dylan in 1984.

“There is not going to be any peace,” Dylan replied. His response drew criticism, yet there’s no denying that peace remains ever elusive. About 600 years before Christ, most prophets were predicting peace. God’s prophet wasn’t one of them. Jeremiah reminded the people that God had said, “Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people” (JEREMIAH 7:23). Yet they repeatedly ignored the Lord and His commands. Their false prophets said, “Peace, peace” (8:11), but Jeremiah predicted disaster. Jerusalem fell in 586 bc .

Peace is rare. But amid Jeremiah’s book of dire prophecies we discover a God who loves relentlessly. “I have loved you with an everlasting love,” the Lord told His rebellious people. “I will build you up again” (31:3–4).

God is a God of love and peace. Conflict comes because of our rebellion against Him. Sin destroys the world’s peace and robs each of us of inner peace. Jesus came to this planet to reconcile us to God and give us that inner peace. “Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” wrote the apostle Paul (ROMANS 5:1). His words are among the most hope-filled ever written.

Whether we live in a combat zone or dwell in a serene neighborhood with nary a whisper of war, Christ invites us into His peace. TIM GUSTAFSON

매여 있을 수 없음

멕시코 만에서 친구들과 함께 수영을 하던 케이틀린이 상어의 습격을 받았습니다. 상어가 케이틀린의 다리를 단단히 물고는 그녀의 몸을 잡아당겼습니다. 그 공격에 맞서 케이틀린은 상어의 코를 주먹으로 내리쳤습니다. 그 포식자는 다리를 물고 있던 턱을 벌리더니 졌다는 듯이 가버렸습니다. 상어에 물려 상처난 여러 곳을 100바늘도 넘게 꿰매야 했지만, 상어는 케이틀린을 끝까지 잡고 있지 못했습니다.

이 무용담을 들으면서 나는 예수님께서 사망 권세를 일격으로 멸하심으로써 그 권세가 더 이상 주님을 따르는 자들을 겁주고 굴복시키지 못하게 한 사실을 떠올렸습니다. 베드로는 “이는 [예수님이] 사망에 매여 있을 수 없었음이라”(사도행전 2:24)고 하였습니다.

베드로는 예루살렘의 군중 앞에서 이 말을 했습니다. 아마도 그 군중들은 “그를 십자가에 못 박으시오”(마태복음 27:22, 새번역)라고 소리치며 예수님을 정죄했던 그 사람들이었을 것입니다. 그들의 말대로 로마 병사들은 예수님을 십자가에 못 박고, 예수님의 죽음을 확인할 때까지 주님을 십자가에 매달아두었습니다. 예수님의 몸은 무덤으로 옮겨져
하나님이 주님을 부활시키실 때까지 사흘간 그곳에 머물렀습니다. 예수님이 부활하신 후 베드로는 다른 사도들과 같이 예수님과 이야기도 나누고 식사도 함께 했습니다. 그리고 40일 후 예수님은 그들이 지켜보는 가운데 하늘로 올라가셨습니다(사도행전 1:9).

예수님은 지상에서 육체적 고통과 정신적 고뇌 가운데 돌아가셨지만 하나님의 권능은 무덤을 이기셨습니다. 이 때문에 죽음이나 그 어떤 고난도 우리를 영원히 붙잡아둘 수 없게 되었습니다. 언젠가 믿는 자들은 모두 하나님의 임재 앞에 영생과 온전함을 경험하게 될 것입니다. 부활의 미래에 초점을 맞추면 오늘 이 시간 자유를 누리는데 도움이 됩니다.

Impossible to Hold

Swimming with friends in the Gulf of Mexico, Caitlyn encountered a shark, which grabbed her legs and pulled at her body. To counter the attack, Caitlyn punched the shark in the nose. The predator unclenched its jaws and swam away in defeat. Although its bite caused multiple wounds, which required over 100 stitches, the shark was unable to keep Caitlyn in its grasp.

This story reminds me of the fact that Jesus delivered a blow to death, ending its power to intimidate and defeat His followers. According to Peter, “It was impossible for death to keep its hold on [Jesus]” (ACTS 2:24).

Peter said these words to a crowd in Jerusalem. Perhaps many of them had been the ones yelling out, “Crucify him!” to condemn Jesus (MATTHEW 27:22). As a result, Roman soldiers fastened Him to a cross where He hung until they confirmed He was dead. Jesus’s body was carried to a tomb where it stayed for three days until God resurrected Him. After His resurrection, Peter and others spoke and ate with Him, and after forty days they watched Him ascend into heaven (ACTS 1:9).

Jesus’s life on Earth ended amidst physical suffering and mental anguish, yet God’s power defeated the grave. Because of this, death—or any other struggle—lacks the ability to keep us in its grip forever. One day all believers will experience everlasting life and wholeness in God’s presence. 좁은 길을 선택하기

콜로라도의 아름다운 가을 산을 배경으로 한 청년이 말 위에 앉아 어느 길로 갈까 곰곰이 생각하고 있는 사진이 있습니다. 이 사진을 보면 로버트 프로스트의 시 “가지 않은 길”이 생각납니다. 그 시에서 프로스트는 자기 앞에 놓여 있는 두 갈래 길을 놓고 깊은 생각에 잠깁니다. 두 길이 모두 좋아 보이는데 다시 이곳에 되돌아올 것 같지 않아 하나를 선택해야 합니다. 프로스트는 이렇게 썼습니다. “숲속에 두 갈래의 길이 있었다. 나는 사람이 적게 다닌 길을 택하였다. 그리고 그것 때문에 모든 것이 달라졌다.”

예수님은 산상수훈(마태복음 5-7장)에서 주님의 말씀을 듣는 자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “좁은 문으로 들어가라 멸망으로 인도하는 문은 크고 그 길이 넓어 그리로 들어가는 자가 많고 생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 자가 적음이라” (7:13-14).

우리는 인생 여정에서 가야 할 길을 놓고 많은 선택을 해야 합니다. 전도가 밝고 매력적으로 보이는 길은 많지만 생명의 길은 오직 하나 뿐입니다. 예수님은 우리에게 제자됨의 길과 하나님 말씀에 순종하는 길, 즉 대다수의 사람을 따라가지 말고 주님을 따르라고 부르십니다.

앞으로 가야 할 길에 대해 깊이 생각하고 있는 우리에게 하나님께서 생명의 길인 주님의 길을 따르도록 지혜와 용기를 주시기를 바랍니다. 그럴 때 우리와 우리가 사랑하는 사람들의 모든 것이 달라질 것입니다!

Choosing the Trail

I have a beautiful autumn photograph of a young man on horseback in the Colorado mountains as he contemplates which trail ahead to follow. It reminds me of Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken.” In it, Frost ponders two pathways that lie before him. Both are equally inviting, but he doubts he will return to this place again, and he must choose one. Frost wrote, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

In Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount (MATTHEW 5–7), the Lord told His listeners, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (7:13–14).

On our journey through life, we face many choices about which road to travel. Many pathways seem promising and attractive but only one is the pathway of life. Jesus calls us to travel the road of discipleship and obedience to God’s Word—to follow Him instead of the crowd.

As we ponder the road ahead, may God give us wisdom and courage to follow His way—the road of life. It will make all the difference for us and those we love! DAVID C. MCCASLAND
