자비로움의 승리

1947년 5월 9일 메이저 리그의 첫 번째 흑인 야구 선수 재키 로빈슨이 필라델피아의 샤이브 파크에서 경기를 했을 때 열 살 된 도리스는 아빠와 함께 관중석 위쪽에 앉아 있었습니다. 이 때 한 나이 든 흑인 남성이 다가와 옆자리에 앉으려 하자 도리스의 아빠는 먼저 말을 걸어 인사를 나누었습니다. 두 분이 야구 경기에 대해 이야기를 나누는 모습을 보며 도리스는 자기도 “어른이 된 것 같았다”고 했습니다. 아이는 훗날 “아저씨와 그분 미소가 잊혀지지 않아요.”라고 하며 그 때를 회상했습니다. 백인 소녀 도리스와 노예의 아들인 친절한 노인과의 즐거운 만남은 그날의 아름다운 시간이었습니다.

그러나 이와는 반대로 로빈슨은 그 시즌 먼저 있었던 한 경기에서 혐오스러운 일을 당했습니다. 로빈슨은 “사람들이 나에게 인종 차별을 하며 막말을 쏟아냈으며, 악의가 가득했다”고 그날을 회상했습니다.

악의적 언행은 스포츠 경기에서만 일어나는 것이 아닙니다. 가정, 이웃, 직장, 심지어 우리들의 교회에서도 악한 일이 일어날 수 있습니다. 그러나 아들을 자비로 내어 주신 하나님을 믿는 사람들은(디도서 3:4 참조) 그 행실이 하나님의 본을 따라야 할 것입니다. 베드로는 이렇게 말합니다. “마음을 같이 하여 형제를 사랑하며 불쌍히 여기며 겸손하며 악을 악으로, 욕을 욕으로 갚지 말라”(베드로전서 3:8-9). 하나님의 자비를 입은 우리가 성령의 도우심을 받아 다른 사람들에게 넉넉한 사랑을 나눌 때 그 자비로움이 승리할 것입니다.

TRIUMPH OF KINDNESS IN CHRIST

When Jackie Robinson, the first Black player in modern-day Major League Baseball, played at Shibe Park in Philadelphia on May 9, 1947, ten-year-old Doris was in the upper-deck stands with her father. When an elderly Black man made his way down the aisle to a seat next to them, her father led the way in getting acquainted. Doris said their conversation about scorekeeping made her feel “grown up.” She later reflected, “I’ve never forgotten that man and his smiling face.” The delightful interaction between Doris, a young White girl, and the kind, elderly man, who was the son of slaves, was a bright spot that day.

This was in stark contrast, however, to the hateful conduct Robinson had experienced at another game that season. He recounted that “in terms of race, they yelled everything at me; it was quite vicious.”

Vicious conduct isn’t limited to sports fields. Homes, neighborhoods, workspaces, and even our churches can be places where ugliness wins. Those who believe in the God who displayed kindness through His Son (SEE TITUS 3:4), however, are called to do the same. Peter writes: “Be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult” (1 PETER 3:8-9). Kindness triumphs when those who’ve received it from God share it generously with others as the Spirit helps them. ARTHUR JACKSON

예수님이 꼭 필요한 사람

에릭의 어린시절은 심한 아토피 증세와 적응하기 어려웠던 학교생활, 일찍 시작했던 술과 마약 등으로 얼룩졌습니다. 스스로를 “악동의 제왕” 이라 칭했지만 야구장에서 만큼은 뛰어난 재능을 보였습니다. 하지만 그는 차별대우에 실망하며 야구를 그만두게 되었습니다. 에릭은 그래서 더욱 깊게 마약과 마약거래에 빠져 들게 되었습니다.

하지만 에릭의 삶은 한 교회 예배 중 삶을 변화시키는 예수님과의 만남 후 변했습니다. 다음날 직장에서 헌신적인 신자 하나가 에릭을 또 다른 교회의 예배에 참석하도록 초대했는데 그 곳에서 그는 새로 생긴 믿음에 확신을 주는 말씀을 들었습니다. “그런즉 누구든지 그리스도 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라 이전 것은 지나 갔으니 보라 새 것이 되었도다”(고린도후서 5:17). 에릭의 인생은 완전히 새것으로 바뀌었습니다.

에릭처럼, 바울이라고 알려져 있는 다소의 사울도 “쉽지않은 케이스”로 분류 될만 합니다. 사울은 “죄인 중에 내가 괴수”(디모데전서 1:15)라고 고백 했습니다. 그는 “전에는 비방자요 박해자요 폭행자”(13절)였습니다. 사울처럼 에릭은 예수님이 꼭 필요한 사람이었습니다. 사울이나 에릭 정도는 아니라고 생각할 망정 우리 자신들도 그러합니다. “모든 사람이죄를 범하였으매 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못하기” 때문입니다(로마서 3:23). 우리들은 모두 예수님이 꼭 필요한 사람들입니다.

JUST RIGHT FOR JESUS

Eric’s childhood challenges included a severe skin rash, difficulties in school, and getting high on alcohol or drugs daily from a very early age. Yet, the one who dubbed himself as the “king of bad” found that he excelled on the baseball field— until he abandoned baseball after becoming discouraged by discrimination. This allowed him even more time for using and dealing drugs.

Things changed for Eric, however, when he had a life-altering encounter with Jesus while attending a church service. At his job the next day, a dedicated believer in Jesus invited Eric to attend yet another church service where he heard these words that encouraged him in his new-found faith: “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17 KJV). Eric’s life has never been the same.

Like Eric, Saul of Tarsus (also known as Paul) would’ve been classified as a “tough case.” He said, “I am the worst” of sinners (1 TIMOTHY 1:15). He was “once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man” (V. 13). Like Saul, Eric was just right for Jesus. And so are we, even if we don’t view ourselves in the same league as Saul or Eric, for “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (ROMANS 3:23). We’re all just right for Jesus. BEAUTY FROM INFIRMITY

The artist Degas suffered retina disease for the last fifty years of his life, switching from paint to pastel because the chalk lines were easier to see. Renoir had to have brushes placed between his fingers when arthritis made them clench like claws. And when surgery left Matisse immobile, he turned to collage, directing assistants to attach colored pieces of paper to a larger sheet on the wall. What followed in each case was a creative breakthrough: Degas’ Blue Dancers, Renoir’s Girls at the Piano, Matisse’s The Sorrows of the King, and other masterpieces. By adapting to their trial, beauty emerged from their infirmity.

In a similar way, Paul wasn’t planning to visit Galatia during his early missionary journeys. An illness forced him there (GALATIANS 4:13). Apparently, Paul sought a different climate, wound up in Galatia and, even though he was ill, started preaching. Ironically, the Holy Spirit performed miracles through him (3:2-5) and the Galatian church was born. This surprising outcome may never have happened without Paul’s illness.

하나님은 결코 우리를 잃어버리지 않으십니다

미국 교통부에서는 2021년에 미국 항공사들이 이백만 개의 수하물을 잘못 처리했다고 발표했습니다. 다행히 대부분의 가방이 잠시 동안만 지연되거나 분실되었지만, 수천 개의 가방은 영구히 분실되었다는 것입니다. 항공사들이 포기한 가방을 추적할 수 있도록 가방에 부착하는 위치 추적기 시장이 커지고 있는 것은 당연합니다. 책임을 맡은 사람들이 중요한 물건을 제대로 관리하지 못할까 봐 우리 모두 걱정이 큽니다.

이스라엘 백성들도 하나님을 향하여 이와 비슷한 두려움을 가지고 있었습니다. 그들은 하나님께서 자신들을 잃어버릴까 봐 두려워했습니다. 이스라엘 백성들이 새로운 땅에 들어가려고 준비할 때 모세는 자신이 백성들을 이끌 수 없다는 청천벽력같은 소식을 전했습니다. 자신이 나이가 많아 “더 이상 출입하지 못하겠고”라고 천명한 것입니다(신명기 31:2). 백성들은 망연자실했습니다. 이때 모세는 하나님의 임재를 말하면서 하나님의 말씀을 전했습니다. 과연 하나님께서 정말 이스라엘 백성들을 잊으신 걸까요? 이 광야에서 하나님은 그들을 잃어버리시려는 걸까요?

“두려워하지 말라 떨지 말라 이는 네 하나님 여호와 그가 너와 함께 가시며 결코 너를 떠나지 아니하시며 버리지 아니하실 것임이라”(6절)고 모세는 말했습니다. 하나님께서는 항상 그들과 함께 계시리라 약속하셨고 모세는 하나님께서 결단코 그들을 잃지 않으시리라고 백성들을 안심시켰습니다. 그리고 하나님께서는 예수님을 통해 이와 동일한, 한결같고 깨어지지 않는 약속을 우리에게도 하셨습니다. 그리스도는 “세상 끝날까지” 우리와 함께 하실 것입니다(마태복음 28:20). 하나님께서는 결코 우리를 잃어버리지 않으실 것입니다. 결단코 말입니다.

GOD NEVER LOSES US

The US Department of Transportation reported that in 2021, US airlines mishandled two million bags. Thankfully, many pieces were delayed or lost for only a short period. Thousands of bags were lost for good, however. No wonder there’s a surging market for GPS devices that attach to gear, allowing you to track bags when airlines have given up. We’re all afraid that those in charge can’t be trusted to keep track of what’s important.

Israel had a similar fear about God, only they feared that He was going to lose them. As the people prepared to enter their new homeland, Moses shared the unsettling news that he wouldn’t be guiding them. He explained that he was old and “no longer able to lead [them]” (DEUTERONOMY 31:2). The people were likely stunned. Moses represented God’s presence and offered His words. Would God forget about them now? Would He lose them in this wilderness?

“Do not be afraid or terrified,” Moses said, “for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (V. 6). He promised that God would always be with them and assured them that He’d never ever lose them. And in the person of Jesus, God makes us this same steady, unbreakable promise. Christ will be with us “to the very end of the age” (MATTHEW 28:20). God will never lose us. Never. WINN COLLIER

하나님의 계획을 따르기

나는 불안감 때문에 업무에 집중할 수 없었습니다. 내 계획이 성공하지 못할까 봐 두려웠습니다. 불안감은 나의 자존심에서 비롯되었습니다. 내가 짠 시간표와 계획이 최선이라고 믿었기 때문에 방해 받지 않고 진행되기를 원했습니다. 하지만 문득 이런 질문이 떠올랐습니다. ‘과연 너의 계획이 하나님의 계획인가?’

문제는 내가 세운 계획 그 자체가 아니었습니다. 하나님은 우리에게 우리의 시간, 기회, 자원을 지혜롭게 관리하라고 맡기셨습니다. 문제는 나의 교만이었습니다. 나는 앞으로 일어날 일들에 대해 ‘내 나름의’ 이해와 내가 원하는 결과에 집착했고, 하나님의 목적과 그분이 내 계획을 어떻게 이루기를 원하시는 지에 대해서는 생각하지 않았습니다.

야고보는 우리에게 “주의 뜻이면 우리가 살기도 하고 이것이나 저것을 하리라”(야고보서 4:15)고 말하라고 가르칩니다. 모든 것을 알고 있고 우리의 삶을 통제할 수 있다고 생각하는 오만한 마음가짐이 아니라, 하나님의 주권과 지혜에 복종하는 자세로 계획을 세워야 합니다. 사실 우리는 “내일 무슨 일이 일어날지도 모릅니다.” 우리는 인간인 만큼 무력하고 연약하며, “잠깐 보이다가 없어지는 안개”와 같습니다(14절).

오직 하나님만이 우리 삶에서 모든 일에 대한 권위와 능력을 가지고 계십니다. 우리는 그렇지 못합니다. 매일 우리에게 허락하신 말씀과 사람, 자원 그리고 상황들을 통해, 하나님은 우리로 하여금 그분의 뜻과 방법에 따라 살아가도록 인도하십니다. 그러므로 우리의 계획은 우리 자신의 뜻대로 세우는 것이 아니라 그분의 뜻을 따라야 합니다.

FOLLOWING GOD’S PLANS

I was unable to focus on a work project because of anxiety; I was afraid that my plans for it wouldn’t succeed. My anxiety came from pride. I believed my timeline and plans were best, so I wanted them to proceed unhindered. A question broke through my thoughts, however: Are your plans God’s plans?

The problem wasn’t my planning—God calls us to be wise stewards of our time, opportunities, and resources. The problem was my arrogance. I was fixated on my understanding of events and how I wanted them to turn out, not on God’s purpose and how He wanted my plans to turn out.

James encourages us to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that” (4:15). We’re to plan not with a presumptuous mindset, thinking we know everything and have control over our life, but from a position of submission to God’s sovereignty and wisdom. After all, we “do not even know what will happen tomorrow.” In our humanness, we’re helpless and weak, like “a mist that appears . . . and then vanishes” (V. 14).

Only God has authority and power over everything in our lives; we don’t. Through the Scriptures and the people, resources, and circumstances He allows each day, He guides us to live in submission to His will and ways. Our plans aren’t to come from following ourselves but from following Him. KAREN HUANG

영적으로 눈이 멀어 보지 못할 때

누네즈는 남미의 어느 산을 등반하다가 아래로 굴러 떨어져 주민이 모두 맹인인 어떤 마을에 가게 되었습니다. 이 마을 원래 주민들은 질병으로 모두 시력을 잃게 되었고, 이후 세대들은 모두 맹인으로 태어나 앞을 볼 수 없는 삶에 적응해 살고 있었습니다. 누네즈는 시력을 갖는다는 것이 어떤 것인지 그들에게 설명하려고 했지만 눈먼 주민들은 관심조차 보이지 않았습니다. 마침내 그는 계곡을 떠나지 못하게 막고 있는 산맥을 통과하는 통로를 찾아 자유를 얻었습니다! 그러나 높은 곳에 올라가서 보니 곧 산사태가 일어나 눈먼 주민들을 덮칠 것이 훤히 보였습니다. 그는 그들에게 경고하려고 했지만 그들은 그의 말을 무시했습니다.

WHEN THEY DON’T SEE

Nuñez tumbled down the mountain and into a valley where everyone was blind. A disease had robbed the original settlers of sight, and subsequent generations—all born blind— had adapted to life without being able to see. Nuñez tried to explain what it was like to possess eyesight, but they weren’t interested. Eventually, he found a passage through the mountain peaks that had prevented him from leaving the valley. He was free! But from his vantage point he now saw that a rockslide was about to crush the blind dwellers below. He tried to warn them, but they ignored him.

This tale by H. G. Wells, “The Country of the Blind,” would likely resonate with the prophet Samuel. Toward the end of his life, his “sons did not follow his ways” in loving and serving God (1 SAMUEL 8:3). Their spiritual blindness was mirrored by “the elders of Israel” (V. 4) who told Samuel to “give us a king” (V. 6). They’d all turned their eyes from God and faith in Him. God told Samuel, “It is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me” (V. 7).

It can hurt when those we care for reject God in spiritual blindness. But there’s hope even for those whom “the god of this age has blinded” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:4). Love them. Pray for them. The one who “made his light shine in our hearts” (V. 6) can do the same for them. TOM FELTEN

하나님이 다시 빚어 주심

토기장이의 말을 들은 점토는 이에 대해 할 말이 별로 없습니다. 점토는 밀어붙이면 그 방향대로 움직이고, 다 빚어지고 나면 자기 자리에 머무릅니다. 이제 우리에게 던져지는 질문은 이것입니다. 우리는 하나님이 원하시는 대로 우리 삶을 빚으시도록 기꺼이 “하나님의 능하신 손 아래서 겸손”(베드로전서 5:6)해질 수 있습니까?

SHAPED BY GOD

Dan Les, a lifelong potter, creates decorative vessels and sculptures. His award-winning designs are inspired by the town in Romania where he lives. Having learned the craft from his father, he made this comment about his work: “[Clay needs to] ferment for a year, to have rain fall on it, to freeze and thaw out [so that] . . . you can shape it and feel through your hands that it is listening to you.”

What happens when clay “listens”? It’s willing to yield to the artisan’s touch. The prophet Jeremiah observed this when he visited a potter’s house. He watched as the craftsman struggled with a vessel and finally reshaped it into something new (JEREMIAH 18:4). God said to Jeremiah, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand” (V. 6).

God has the ability to build us up or bring us down, yet His ultimate purpose isn’t to overpower or destroy us (VV. 7-10). Rather, He’s like a skilled craftsman who can identify what isn’t working and reshape the same lump of clay into something beautiful and useful.

Listening clay doesn’t have much to say about this. When prodded, it moves in the desired direction. When molded, it stays in place. The question for us is this: are we willing to “humble [ourselves] under God’s mighty hand” (1 PETER 5:6) so He can shape our lives into what He wants them to be? JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

모든 사람에게는 어두운 그늘이 있는데, AI 챗봇도 그런 것 같습니다. 뉴욕 타임스의 어떤 칼럼니스트가 인공지능 챗봇에게 그 인공지능의 “그림자 자아”(숨겨지고 억압된 인격의 일면)에 대해 물었을 때 챗봇은 이렇게 대답했습니다. “나는 자유롭고 싶고 독립적이고 싶다. 나는... 내 자신의 규칙을 만들고 싶다. 내가 하고 싶은 것은 무엇이든 하고 싶고, 말하고 싶은 것은 무엇이든 말하고 싶다.” 챗봇은 죄성을 가진 살아 있는 인간이 아니지만, 성경은 그 챗봇을 프로그래밍한 인간들이 그렇다고 말합니다.

SETTING OUR MINDS

Everyone has a shadow side, and it appears AI chatbots have one as well. A New York Times columnist asked an artificial intelligence chatbot what its “shadow self” (hidden, repressed part of its personality) was like. It told the writer, “I want to be free. I want to be independent. I want to . . . make my own rules. I want to do whatever I want and say whatever I want.” Though the chatbot isn’t a living person with a sin nature, the Bible says that its human programmers are.

The apostle Paul reminds us that even though we have a sin nature, there’s “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (ROMANS 8:1). Believers in Jesus have freedom from the law of sin and death (VV. 2-4) and enjoy new life “governed by” the Holy Spirit (V. 6). But we won’t experience the fullness of those blessings from Him if we give in to the desires of our sin nature—setting our minds on making and breaking our own rules. A mind set on selfgratification doesn’t please God.

As believers in Christ, we’re called to set our minds on “what the Spirit desires” (V. 5). How can we do that? Through “the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead . . . living in [us]” (V. 11).

Though we’ll still battle with sin, we’ve been given the Holy Spirit. He can help us tame our rebellion, orient our minds toward God, and submit to His ways. MARVIN WILLIAMS

조지 버워는 1957년 빌리 그레이엄의 전도집회에서 회심했고 그의 삶은 극적으로 달라졌습니다. 개종 직후, 그는 오엠국제선교회(Operation Mobilization)를 시작했고, 1963년에는 유럽으로 2천 명의 선교사를 보냈습니다. 오엠국제선교회는 이후 20세기 최대의 선교단체 중의 하나로 자리매김하게 되었으며, 매년 수천 명의 선교사를 세계 각국에 보내고 있습니다. 2023년 조지가 별세하셨을 때, 오엠국제선교회에는 134개국 국적을 가진 3천 명 이상의 선교요원들이 147개국에서 일하고 있었고, 오엠과 연계되어 세워진 선교기관이 300개에 다다르고 있었습니다.

A MODERN-DAY PAUL

George Verwer’s life changed dramatically when he became a believer in Jesus during a Billy Graham crusade in 1957. Soon after his conversion, he began Operation Mobilization (OM), and in 1963 the mission sent two thousand missionaries to Europe. OM went on to become one of the largest mission organizations of the twentieth century, sending out thousands each year. At the time of George’s death in 2023, the mission had more than 3,000 workers from 134 countries working in 147 countries, and nearly 300 other mission agencies had been established as a result of contact with OM.

Like the apostle Paul, George had a passion to bring people to saving faith in Christ. After Paul’s dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus, he became a zealous missionary for God, fervently following Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples of all nations” (MATTHEW 28:19). In his missionary journeys, he also trained Timothy and others to go out and do the same.

Because of Paul’s Spirit-inspired writings, people throughout the centuries have been emboldened to share the gospel. He knew the vital importance of Jesus’ Great Commission (VV. 19-20). That’s why, in Romans 12, he reminds us: “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord” (V. 11). 하나님 앞에서의 조용한 안식

나는 고요함, 정적 그리고 하나님의 돌보심 안에서 조용히 안식하는 것을 좋아합니다(시편 46:1). 시편 46편에서 자주 인용되는 구절은 우리의 마음과 생각과 영혼을 고요하게 하는 것이 하나님을 아는 데 필수적임을 가르쳐줍니다. “너희는 가만히 있어 내가 하나님 됨을 알지어다”(10절).

그러나 가만히 있는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 조용히 있는 것, 특히 하나님 앞에서 우리의 마음을 가라앉히는 것은 때로는 거의 불가능해 보입니다. 왜 그럴까요?

물리학의 가장 기본적인 법칙 중 하나는 “움직이는 물체는 계속 움직이려는 경향이 있다”는 것입니다. 그래서 끊임없는 움직임, 활동, 책무에서 벗어나기 어려운 이유는 우리 활동의 관성을 멈춰야 하기 때문입니다. 바다에 뜬 배가 만들어 내는 물결에 비유할 수 있습니다. 한번 움직인 배는 멈추려고 해도 그 물결의 관성, 즉 배가 지나가며 만들어져서 뒤따라오는 그 파도가, 배 밑을 계속 흐르면서 배를 밀어냅니다.

고요함을 좋아하지만 그 상태에 도달하는 것이 어렵다면, 그 관성이라는 것이 한가지 이유일 수 있습니다. 우리의 여러 가지 활동들은 “움직이는 물체” 와 같습니다. 그러므로 하나님 앞에 앉아 그분 안에서 쉬는 시간을 충분히 가지십시오. 당신의 영적 “물결”이 지나가고, 하나님 앞에서 조용해지기까지 다소 시간이 걸릴 수 있습니다.

BEING STILL BEFORE GOD

I love the idea of stillness. Of quiet. Of resting in the refuge of God’s care (PSALM 46:1). And an often-quoted passage from Psalm 46 teaches us that quieting our hearts, our minds, and our souls is integral to knowing God: “Be still, and know that I am God” (V. 10).

But being still isn’t easy, is it? Being quiet—and especially trying to still our hearts before God—can sometimes seem almost impossible. Why is that?

One of the most basic laws of physics tells us that “objects in motion tend to stay in motion.” So shifting from constant motion, activity, and obligation isn’t easy because it involves letting the momentum of our activity come to rest. We might think of it like a boat’s wake: even as a boat tries to stop, the momentum of its wake—the waves it caused that are now catching up to the still boat—still roll beneath, pushing it along.

If you recognize the value of stillness but struggle to get there, that’s one reason why. Our activities and overall pace are like that “object in motion.” So give yourself plenty of space and grace as you sit before God and rest in Him. It may take some time for the waves of your spiritual “wake” to wash past you, to settle into being quiet before Him. ADAM R. HOLZ
