우리를 쫓아오시는 하나님

에반은 여러 해 동안 중독에 시달리며 하나님께 가까이 나아가지 못했습니다. 그는 ‘어떻게 내가 하나님의 사랑을 받을 자격이 있을까?’ 하며 고민했습니다. 교회에 계속 출석은 했어도 하나님과 자기 사이에는 건널 수 없는 큰 골짜기가 있는 것 같았습니다.

그러나 에반이 무언가를 놓고 진심으로 기도할 때마다 하나님이 응답 하시는 것 같았습니다. 하나님은 또한 힘든 일이 있을 때에는 주위에 사람들을 보내어 그를 위로하고 격려해 주셨습니다. 그렇게 몇 해가 지나 에반은 하나님께서 계속 그를 추적하시며 늘 사랑으로 지켜 주신다는 것을 깨닫게 되면서 그때부터 하나님의 용서와 사랑을 믿기 시작했습니다. 그는 말합니다. “아직도 중독과 씨름하고 있지만, 그럼에도 나는 이제 하나님께서 나를 용서하신 것과 하나님께 가까이 나아갈 수 있다는 것을 압니다.”

에스겔 34:11-16은 그의 백성들을 쫓아가셨던 하나님에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 하나님은 그의 백성을 구원하여 풍족하게 주시겠다고 약속하시며, “내가 나의 양 떼를 찾아서 돌보아주겠다”고 말씀하셨습니다(11절, 새번역). 이것은 하나님께서 백성의 지도자들이 그들을 버리고 백성들도 그들의 진정한 목자를 거역한(1-6절) 후에 하신 말씀이었습니다. 우리가 주변 상황에 무기력하게 희생당할 때나 우리 자신의 죄로 고통 당할 때든, 하나님은 사랑으로 우리를 쫓아오셔서 자비와 은혜로 우리를 그분께로 다시 인도하십니다. 하나님을 잊었다면 돌이켜 그분께 다시 돌아오십시오. 그리고 하나님이 인도하시는 대로 매일 계속해서 그분과 동행하십시오.

GOD RUNS AFTER US

For years, Evan struggled with an addiction that kept him from drawing close to God. How can I be worthy of His love? he wondered. So, while he kept going to church, he felt that there was an unbridgeable chasm that kept him separated from God.

Yet, whenever Evan prayed earnestly for something, God seemed to answer him. God also sent people to encourage and comfort him in difficult times. After some years, Evan realized God was constantly pursuing him and showing that He’d always loved and cared for him, and that’s when he began to trust in God’s forgiveness and love. “Now, I know that I’m forgiven and can let God draw me close to Him, even though I’m still struggling with my addiction,” he said.

Ezekiel 34:11-16 tells us of a God who pursued His people. “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them,” He said, vowing to rescue them and provide for them abundantly (V. 11). This was after their human leaders abandoned them, and they themselves disobeyed their true shepherd (VV. 1-6). Whether we’re helpless victims of circumstances or struggling with the consequences of our own sin, God pursues us in love. In His mercy and grace, He draws us back to Him. If you’ve forgotten God, turn back to Him. Then, as He leads, continue to walk with Him each day.

친구 낚기

패티는 동네 강둑에서 낚싯대에 미끼를 달아 물에 던지며 오후 시간을 보내고 있었습니다. 얼마전 이곳으로 이사 온 패티는 사실 물고기를 잡는 것보다 새로운 친구들을 사귀고 싶었습니다. 패티의 낚싯줄에는 벌레나 어떤 다른 미끼가 없었습니다. 대신 튼튼한 철갑상어용 낚싯대를 사용 하여 더운 여름날 고무 보트를 타고 강을 떠다니는 사람들에게 과자 꾸러미를 건네주었습니다. 새로운 이웃을 만나기 위해 이런 창의적인 방법을 쓰니 모두가 그 달콤한 선물을 기뻐하는 것 같았습니다!

패티는 예수님이 베드로와 안드레에게 일생 동안 함께 할 것을 청하셨을 때 의도하셨던 것보다 훨씬 더 문자 그대로 “친구 낚시”를 했습니다. 형제 간인 베드로와 안드레는 갈릴리 바다에서 그물을 던지며 열심히 일하는 어부 들이었습니다. 예수님은 그들의 일을 멈추고, 물고기 대신 “사람을 낚는 어부”가 되게 하겠다고 하시며 주님을 따르라고 부르셨습니다(마태복음 4:19). 얼마 지나지 않아 예수님은 다른 두 어부, 야고보와 요한도 똑같이 부르셨습니다. 그들은 모두 바로 그물과 배를 버려두고 예수님과 함께 다녔습니다.

예수님의 첫 제자가 된 어부들처럼 예수님은 우리도 주님을 따르며 우리의 관심을 영원한 것, 곧 우리가 만나는 사람들의 영적인 삶에 두라고 권하십니다. 우리는 우리 주위 사람들에게 진정한 만족, 곧 예수님과 함께 사는 영원한 소망(요한복음 4:13-14)을 전해줄 수 있습니다.

FISHING FOR FRIENDS

Patty spent the afternoon on the banks of a local river, using her fishing pole to cast bait into the water. Having only recently moved to the area, she wasn’t hoping to catch fish; she was angling for some new friends. Her line wasn’t baited with worms or any other traditional lure. Instead, she used her heavyduty sturgeon rod to extend packets of cookies to people who were floating down the river in rafts on a hot summer day. She used this creative way to meet her new neighbors, who all seemed to enjoy the sweet treat!

Patty went “fishing for friends” in a much more literal way than Jesus intended when He invited Peter and Andrew to walk with Him through life. The two brothers were hardworking fishermen, casting their nets into the Sea of Galilee. Jesus interrupted their labors with a call to follow Him, saying He would send them out to “fish for people” instead of fish (MATTHEW 4:19). He made the same invitation to two other fishermen, James and John, shortly thereafter. They all left their nets and boats immediately to journey with Jesus.

Like the fishermen who became His first disciples, Christ invites us to follow Him and focus our attention on eternal matters: the spiritual lives of those with whom we interact. We can offer those around us what really satisfies—the enduring hope of life with Jesus (JOHN 4:13-14).

조운은 수잔이 소셜 미디어에 올린 것을 보고 속이 상했습니다. 교회 친구 열 명이 식당 테이블에 둘러 앉아 웃고 있는 사진이었습니다. 친구들은 이 달에 두 번이나 조운을 빼놓고 좋은 시간을 가진 것입니다. 조운은 겨우 눈물을 참았습니다. 조운은 다른 사람들과 늘 잘 어울리지는 않았지만 그래도 사이는 좋았습니다. 하지만 자신을 소외시키는 사람들과 함께 교회에 참석한다는 사실이 얼마나 이상하게 느껴지는지 모릅니다!

예수님 시대에도 그런 이상한 일들이 있었습니다. 그러나 예수님은 연합을 이루기를 원하시고 우리의 분열을 회복시키기 위해 오셨습니다. 교회가 시작되면서 서로 잘 어울리지 않았던 사람들은 예수님 안에서 어떤 공통점을 찾아야 했습니다. 그러나 유대인들은 이방인들이 율법을 지키지 않는다고 무시했고, 이방인들은 유대인들의 우월감을 싫어했습니다. 그 때 예수님은 “둘로 하나를 만드사 원수 된 것 곧 중간에 막힌 담을 자기 육체로 허시고 법조문으로 된 계명의 율법을 폐하셨습니다”(에베소서 2:14-15). 율법을 지키는 것이 더이상 중요하지 않게 된 것입니다. 중요한 것은 예수님이었습니다. 그렇다면 유대인과 이방인이 예수님 안에서 하나가 될 수 있었을까요?

그것은 그들의 반응에 달려 있었습니다. 예수님은 “먼 데 있는 [이방인 들에게] 평안을 전하시고 가까운데 있는 [유대인들에게] 평안을 전하셨습니다” (17절). 같은 메시지지만 적용은 다르게 되었습니다. 독선적인 유대인들은 다른 사람보다 나은 것이 없음을 인정할 필요가 있었고, 무시당하던 이방인들은 남들보다 못하지 않다는 것을 믿을 필요가 있었습니다. 서로가 상대에게만 신경쓸 것이 아니라 “둘로 자기 안에서 한 새 사람을 지어 화평하게 하신” (15절) 예수님께 집중할 필요가 있었던 것입니다.

무시당한 느낌이 듭니까? 그것은 상처가 되고 또 옳지 않은 일입니다. 그러나 예수님 안에 편히 거할 때 당신은 화평케 하는 사람이 될 수 있습니다. 예수님은 지금도 우리의 평화가 되십니다.

JESUS OUR PEACE

Joan groaned when she saw Susan’s social media post. The photo showed ten church friends, smiling around a restaurant table. For the second time this month, they were having a grand time—without her. Joan blinked away tears. She didn’t always get along with the others, but still. How strange to attend church with people who didn’t include her!

How strangely first century! But Jesus desires unity and came to heal our division. From the church’s beginning, people who didn’t get along were to find common ground in Him. Jews looked down on gentiles for not keeping the law, and gentiles loathed Jews for thinking they were better. Then Jesus “made the two groups one”; He “destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands” (EPHESIANS 2:14-15). Keeping the law no longer mattered. What counted was Jesus. Would Jew and gentile unite in Him?

That depended on their response. Jesus “preached peace to” gentiles “who were far away and peace to [Jews] who were near” (V. 17). Same message, different application. Self-righteous Jews needed to admit they weren’t better, while snubbed gentiles needed to believe they weren’t worse. Both needed to stop fretting about the other and focus on Christ, who was creating “in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace” (V. 15).

Feeling snubbed? That hurts. It’s not right. But you can be a peacemaker as you rest in Jesus. He’s still our peace.

그리스도 안에서 돌봄

내 친구 드웨인의 어머니 샬린은 나이 94세에 키는 5피트(약 150cm) 가 안되고 몸무게도 100파운드(약 45킬로그램)가 안됩니다. 그래도 이 어머니는 지금도 장애로 몸을 추스르지 못하는 아들을 돌봅니다. 그들이 사는 이층집을 방문하면 어머니는 대개 자기가 지내는 2층에 있다가 사랑하는 아들을 보살필 때처럼 열 여섯 개의 계단을 천천히 내려와 손님을 맞이합니다.

샬린이 자신보다는 먼저 아들을 위해 헌신하는 모습을 보면 내 마음이 찔리고 도전과 격려를 받습니다. 샬린은 바울이 빌립보서 2장에서 권하는 모습의 본을 보여주고 있습니다. “오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고 각각 자기 일을 돌볼뿐더러 또한 각각 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보라” (3-4절).

건강에 문제가 있거나 다른 도움이 필요한 사람들을 돌보는 데에는 희생이 따를 수 있습니다. 살아가기에 힘든 형편일 수도 있지만, 우리가 마음먹고 자신을 내어주지 않는다면 아무리 가까운 사람이라도 제대로 돌봐 줄 수가 없는 것입니다. 그러나 겸손히 돌보는 일은 예수님을 믿는 사람들이 마땅히 해야 할 일입니다(1-4절 참조). 우리가 자신을 내어줄 때에 예수님의 본을 따라 다른 사람들을 도울 수 있습니다. 바울 사도는 이렇게 상기시켜 줍니다. “다른 이들과의 관계에 있어서 예수 그리스도의 마음을 가지십시오”(5절, NIV).

CARING IN CHRIST

Ms. Charlene, my friend Dwayne’s mother, is ninety-four years old, under five feet tall, and weighs less than a hundred pounds. Yet this doesn’t stop her from doing what she can to care for her son, whose physical health prevents him from caring for himself. Visits to their two-story home often find her on the second floor where she resides. Slowly, she descends sixteen stairs to the first floor to greet her guests, just as she does to assist in caring for the son whom she loves.

Ms. Charlene’s selfless determination convicts, challenges, and inspires me as she prioritizes her son’s well-being over her own. She models what Paul encourages in Philippians 2: “In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (VV. 3-4).

Caring for those with health challenges or other needs can be costly. The demands of life can be all-consuming, and even those closest to us can be shortchanged if we’re not intentional about taking our eyes off ourselves. But humbly caring is what believers in Jesus are called to do (SEE VV. 1-4). When we give of ourselves, we follow the example of Jesus and help others in the process. The apostle reminds us: “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” (V. 5).

하나님의 눈에 열외는 없습니다

프로 미식축구 팀들은 매년 열리는 미식축구연맹 선수 선발 기간 동안 신인 선수들을 선발합니다. 감독들은 유망한 선수의 기술과 체력을 평가하는데 상당히 많은 시간을 들입니다. 2022년, 브록 퍼디는 제일 마지막 순위인 262위로 선정되었고, 마지막으로 선정된 선수에게 붙여지는 불명예스러운 별명인 “미스터 열외”로 불렸습니다. 다음 시즌에 그가 경기에 출전할 거라고는 아무도 예상하지 않았습니다. 그러나 불과 몇 달 후 퍼디는 두 번의 플레이오프 경기에서 팀을 승리로 이끌었습니다. 사실, 팀 관계자들도 선수들의 잠재력을 언제나 제대로 파악할 수는 없습니다. 이것은 우리도 마찬가지입니다.

우리는 왜 종종 사람들을 잘 평가하지 못할까요? 오늘의 성경말씀은 우리에게 “사람은 외모를 보거니와 나 여호와는 중심을 본다”(7절)고 하는 사실을 상기시켜 줍니다. 우리가 사역 팀이나 자원봉사로 섬길 사람을 뽑아야 할 때, 하나님 보시기에 귀한 자질에 근거하여 선발할 수 있는 지혜를 달라고 하나님께 간구해야 합니다.

NOT IRRELEVANT IN GOD’S EYES

During the annual National Football League Draft, professional football teams choose new players. Coaches spend thousands of hours evaluating prospective players’ skills and physical fitness. In 2022, Brock Purdy was the last—262nd—pick and labeled “Mr. Irrelevant,” the nickname given to the last football player selected. No one expected he would play in a game during the upcoming season. Just a few months later, however, Purdy led his team to two playoff wins. The reality is that team executives don’t always do an effective job identifying potential. And neither do we.

In a familiar Old Testament story, God sent the prophet Samuel to select the next king of Israel from among the sons of Jesse. When Samuel looked at the men, he was swayed by their physical appearance. But God said to him, “Do not consider his appearance or his height” (1 SAMUEL 16:7). Instead, God led him to choose not the oldest or tallest but the youngest and seemingly least relevant choice—David, who would be Israel’s greatest earthly king.

Why do we often do such a poor job evaluating people? Our passage reminds us that “people look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart” (V. 7). When we’re asked to select someone to be on a work team or serve on a volunteer committee, we can ask God to give us wisdom to make choices based on qualities valuable to Him.

예수님 안에서 잘 가꾸는 삶

자갈 길 끄트머리의 약간 진흙 같은 공터 위에 우리 집을 지었는데, 주변의 오레곤 산기슭과 어울릴 수 있도록 잔디와 나무와 관목들이 필요했습니다. 잔디 관리 도구들을 꺼내 일을 시작하려다가 문득 인간을 기다리고 있던 최초의 정원에 대한 생각이 떠올랐습니다. “땅을 갈 사람도 없었으므로 초목이 아직 없었고 밭에는 채소가 나지 아니하였다” (창세기 2:5).

창세기 1장의 창조에 관한 기록을 보면 하나님은 창조물에 대해 거듭 “보시기에 좋았더라”, 또는 “아주 좋았더라”라고 평가하십니다(4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31절). 그러나 그것으로 완성된 것은 아니었습니다. 아담과 하와는 하나님의 창조물을 관리하기(28절) 위해 땅을 경작해야 했습니다. 그들이 살아갈 곳은 바꿀 필요 없는 낙원이 아니라 돌보고 가꾸며 살아야 하는 낙원이었습니다.

우리가 하는 일이 땅을 돌보는 일이든, 예수님 안에서 새로운 삶을 이루어 나가는 일이든, 그 일은 우리가 지속적으로 가꾸어야 할 하나님이 주신 선물입니다.

A CULTIVATED LIFE IN CHRIST

When we built our home, it stood on little more than a muddy, empty lot at the end of a gravel road. We needed grass, trees, and shrubs to match the surrounding Oregon foothills. As I got out my lawn tools and set to work, I thought of the first garden waiting for humans: “No shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, . . . and there was no one to work the ground” (GENESIS 2:5).

The creation account in Genesis 1 repeats God’s assessment of creation: it “was good” or “very good” (VV. 4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31). However, it wasn’t complete. Adam and Eve needed to cultivate the ground—to exercise stewardship of God’s creation (V. 28). They weren’t meant to live in an unchanging paradise but one that needed care and development.

Since the beginning, God has been inviting humans to partner with Him in His creation. He did it in the garden of Eden, and He does it with “the new creation” He makes of us when we put our faith in Christ (2 CORINTHIANS 5:17). Upon salvation, we’re not made perfect. As the apostle Paul says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world” (ROMANS 12:2). God works in us as we pursue a life pleasing to Him, “conformed to the image of his Son” (8:29).

Whether it’s caring for the earth or caring for our new life in Christ, God has given us a gift we need to cultivate.

예수님께 눈을 고정시킴

준은 옆에서 달리는 회색 차에서 눈을 떼지 않았습니다. 고속도로에서 나가려고 차선을 바꾸려는데 추월하려고 할 때마다 옆 차의 운전자도 똑같이 속도를 내는 것 같았습니다. 마침내 간신히 추월하고는 성취의 기쁨을 맛보며 백미러를 쳐다보고 슬쩍 웃었습니다. 하지만 그 순간 준은 나가야 할 출구를 지나친 것을 알았습니다.

준은 그때의 이야기를 하며 어이가 없다는 듯 웃었습니다. “추월에만 정신이 팔려서 나가야 할 출구를 놓친 거야.”

이와 같은 실수는 하나님과 동행하려고 애쓰는 우리에게도 일어날 수 있습니다. 종교지도자들이 예수님께서 유대 율법을 지키지 않는다는 이유로 박해를 할 때(요한복음 5:16), 예수님은 그들이 율법을 연구하고 지키는 데에만 열중하다 정작 율법이 가리키는 예수님은 모른다고 경고하셨습니다. “이 성경이 곧 내게 대하여 증언하는 것이니라 그러나 너희가 영생을 얻기 위하여 내게 오기를 원하지 아니하는도다”(39-40절).

종교지도자들은 하나님 앞에 옳게 행하려고 유대 율법을 지키는 데 몰두하였고 다른 사람들도 모두 그렇게 하게 했습니다. 우리도 이처럼 하나님을 위한 열심으로 교회 참석, 성경공부, 자선 사업 같은 선한 일들을 계속하며 다른 사람들의 동참을 종용하기도 합니다. 하지만 이런 일들에만 너무 집중한 나머지 우리는 그런 일들을 행하는 이유가 되는 예수님을 놓치게 될 수 있습니다.

우리가 행하는 모든 일에서 예수님께 우리의 시선을 고정시킬 수 있도록 하나님께 도움을 구하도록 합시다(히브리서 12:2). 예수님만이 “길이요 진리요 생명”(요한복음 14:6)이십니다.

FIXING OUR EYES ON JESUS

June’s eyes were fixed on the gray car beside her. She had to change lanes to exit the highway, but each time she tried to overtake the vehicle, the other driver seemed to speed up too. Finally, she managed to cut in front. Smug in her moment of triumph, June looked in the rearview mirror and smirked. At the same time, she noticed her destination exit passing her by.

With a rueful smile, she recounted: “I was so fixated on overtaking that I missed my exit.”

Such a slip can also happen in our desire to walk in God’s ways. When the religious leaders persecuted Jesus for not keeping the Jewish law (JOHN 5:16), He warned that they’d become so fixated on studying and enforcing the law that they were missing the person the law pointed to: “These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life” (VV. 39-40).

In trying to be right before God, the religious leaders focused on following the Jewish law and making sure everyone else did too. Likewise, in our zeal for God, we may keep up with good things—church attendance, Bible study, charity work—and even get others to join us. But we can become so focused on them that we miss the person we’re doing them for—Jesus.

In all we do, let’s ask God to help us fix our eyes on Christ (HEBREWS 12:2). He alone is “the way and the truth and the life” (JOHN 14:6).

하나님께서 주신 넓은 곳

혈액 암 불치 판정을 받은 신학자 토드 빌링스는 자신에게 임박한 죽음을 표현하면서, 멀리 있는 방의 불들이 깜박깜박 꺼져 가는 것 같다고 하며 이렇게 말했습니다. “그동안 한 살과 세 살 난 아이의 아빠로서, 네티와 나다니엘이 자라고 성숙해 가는 것을 볼 수 있다고 생각하며 앞에 펼쳐질 수십 년을 어떤 넓은 공간으로 생각했습니다. 그러나 진단을 받고 보니... 그 공간이 갑자기 좁아지고 있습니다.”

빌링스는 이런 한계들을 생각하며 시편 31편에서 하나님이 다윗을 어떻게 “넓은 곳”(8절)에 세우셨는지 묵상하였습니다. 다윗은 적들에 의해 고통받는다고 말하면서도 하나님께서 그의 피난처요 안전한 장소임을 알았습니다(2절). 시편 기자 다윗은 이 시편을 통해 “나의 앞날이 주의 손에 있습니다”(15절)라고 하면서 하나님에 대한 그의 믿음을 고백하였습니다.

빌링스도 다윗처럼 그의 소망을 하나님께 두었습니다. 신학자이자 남편 이요 아버지인 그는 생이 좁혀져 오는 현실 앞에서 자신도 넓은 곳에 살고 있다고 하였습니다. 왜일까요? 그리스도의 희생을 통해 죽음을 이기신 하나님의 승리로 우리는 “상상도 못할 가장 넓은 곳” 되시는 그리스도 안에 거하기 때문 입니다. 그의 설명처럼, “성령의 인도하심으로 하나님과 함께 하는 것보다 더 넓고 광활한 곳이 어디 있을까요?”

우리도 슬피 울 때가 있겠지만, 그래도 하나님 안으로 피해 하나님이 우리를 앞서 인도해 주시기를 간구할 수 있습니다(1, 3절). 다윗처럼 우리도 넓은 곳에 살고 있는 것을 확실히 경험할 수 있습니다.

GOD’S SPACIOUS PLACE

When theologian Todd Billings received a diagnosis of incurable blood cancer, he described his imminent mortality as like lights in distant rooms turning off or flickering. “As the father of a one- and three-year-old, I tended to think of the next few decades as an open expanse, assuming I would see Neti and Nathaniel grow and mature. . . . But in being diagnosed . . . there is a narrowing that takes place.”

In thinking about these limitations, Billings reflected on Psalm 31, how God set David in “a spacious place” (V. 8). Although David spoke of being afflicted by his enemies, he knew that God was his refuge and place of safety (V. 2). Through this song, the psalmist voiced his trust in God: “My times are in your hands” (V. 15).

Billings follows David in placing his hope in God. Although this theologian, husband, and father faces a narrowing in life, he agrees that he also lives in a spacious place. Why? Because God’s victory over death through Christ’s sacrifice means that we dwell in Christ, “the most spacious place imaginable.” As he explains, “What could be broader and more expansive than to share in His life by the Holy Spirit?”

We too may cry in lament, but we can take refuge in God, asking Him to lead us and guide us (VV. 1, 3). With David we can affirm that we live in a spacious place.

낮지만 하나님의 사랑을 받은 자

어느 날 나는 교회를 방문한 한 가족과 인사를 나누었습니다. 나는 그들의 어린 딸의 휠체어 옆에 무릎을 굽히고 앉아 아이에게 나의 봉사견 칼리를 소개하고 아이의 핑크색 안경과 구두가 예쁘다고 말해주었습니다. 아이는 말이 없었지만 미소 지으며 우리의 대화가 즐겁다는 것을 표현했습니다. 다른 여자아이 하나가 나의 새 친구와 눈맞춤을 피하며 다가왔습니다. 그리고는 “이 아이에게 옷이 예쁘다고 말해주세요.”라고 나에게 속삭였습니다. 나는 “네가 직접 말해 봐. 저 아이도 너처럼 친절해.”라고 하면서, 그 새 친구는 소통 방식이 우리와 다르긴 해도 얼마든지 말을 건네도 되고, 또 그 아이를 바라보며 미소를 지으면 자기가 인정받고 사랑받는 것을 알 거라고 설명해 주었습니다.

성경에서나 이 세상에서 보면 ‘다르다’고 여겨지기 때문에 종종 소외되는 사람들이 있습니다. 그러나 위대하신 우리 하나님은 우리의 서로 다름을 축복 하시며, 하나님과 그분의 가족과 더불어 사귀라고 우리를 권하십니다. 시편 138편에서 다윗은 “내가 전심으로 주께 감사하며 ‘신들’ 앞에서 주께 찬송 하리이다”(1절)라고 하고, “여호와께서는 높이 계셔도” 거기서 “낮은 자를 굽어 살피신다”고 말합니다(6절).

높고 거룩하신 하나님은 무엇보다 우리가 겸손할 때 그분의 피조물인 ‘우리’를 긍휼히 보십니다. 우리가 다른 이들을 친절한 눈과 마음으로 바라보고 대할 수 있도록 하나님의 도우심을 구할 때, 우리는 낮지만 사랑받는 자임을 알게 하시는 하나님께 감사드리게 됩니다.

LOWLY BUT LOVED BY GOD

One day at church, I greeted a visiting family. I knelt next to their little girl’s wheelchair, introduced her to my service dog, Callie, and complimented her pretty, pink glasses and boots. Though she was nonverbal, her smile told me she enjoyed our conversation. Another little girl approached, avoiding eye contact with my new friend. She whispered, “Tell her I like her dress.” I said, “You tell her. She’s kind, just like you.” I explained how easy it was to speak with our new friend even though she communicated differently, and how looking at her and smiling would help her feel accepted and loved.

In Scripture and in this world, people are often excluded because they’re perceived as different. However, our great God celebrates our differences and invites us into relationship with Him and His family. In Psalm 138, David says, “I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; before the ‘gods’ I will sing your praise” (V. 1). He says, “the Lord is exalted” and yet, He “looks kindly on the lowly” (V. 6).

God, exalted and holy, looks kindly on us, His created ones, especially when we humble ourselves. As we ask Him to help us look kindly on and behave kindly toward others, we can thank Him for affirming that we’re lowly and loved!

시대를 뛰어넘는 위대한 찬송 작가 아이작 왓츠는 “주 달려 죽은 십자가” 의 가사를 쓰면서, “나의 가장 큰 유익은 다 손실일 뿐”이라거나 “내 모든 자랑거리를 경멸하노라”와 같은 역설적인 시어로 주제를 대조적으로 표현했습니다. “서로 상반되어 보이는 단어를 함께 사용하는 것” 을 ‘모순어법’이라고 하는데, “끔찍하게 좋다”라고 하거나 “점보 새우” 같은 표현들을 말합니다. 왓츠의 가사에는 이보다 훨씬 강한 표현들이 나옵니다.

예수님도 역설을 종종 사용하셨습니다. “심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있다” (마태복음 5:3)고 하시면서 소망이 없는 자들은 그들이 바랄 수 있는 것보다 더 큰 것을 받을 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 소중한 누군가를 잃고 슬퍼할 때 예수님은 우리가 “위로를 받을 것”(4절)이라고 말씀하십니다. 예수님은 인생의 일반적인 법칙들이 하나님의 나라에는 적용되지 않는다는 것을 보여주신 것입니다.

CHRIST’S VISUAL PARADOX

One of the great hymn writers of all time, Isaac Watts, wrote “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” In penning its lyrics, he used the poetic device of paradox to show a contrast in themes: “my richest gain I count but loss” and “pour contempt on all my pride.” We sometimes call these oxymorons, “words used in seeming contradiction to themselves”—like “awfully good” and “jumbo shrimp.” In the case of Watts’s lyrics, this device is far more profound.

Jesus used paradox often. “Blessed are the poor in spirit” (MATTHEW 5:3), He said, suggesting that those who have no hope will receive more than they could ever hope for. When you or I mourn the loss of someone dear and are sad, Jesus says we “will be comforted” (V. 4). Christ was showing how in God’s kingdom the common rules of life don’t apply.

These paradoxes tell us that life in Christ defies all expectations: we who are nobodies are cherished as somebodies. It was on the cross that Jesus bore a visual paradox—a crown of thorns. Isaac Watts took this symbol of ridicule and, paradoxically, gave it soaring beauty: “Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, / or thorns compose so rich a crown?” In this we thrill yet are mindful of the final line of the hymn: “Love so amazing, so divine, / demands my soul, my life, my all.”
