하나님이 들으신다

다이앤은 교회 모임에서 다른 사람들이 그들의 가족이나 친구가 어려운 일을 당했거나 병이 나서 기도를 부탁할 때 듣고만 있었습니다. 그녀에게도 오랫동안 중독으로 고생하는 가족이 있었습니다. 하지만 다이앤은 기도를 부탁하지 않았습니다. 그것은 그 일을 털어놓을 때마다 종종 보게 되는 사람들의 얼굴 표정이나 그들이 하는 질문이나 충고를 견딜 수 없었기 때문이었습니다. 그래서 이 기도 요청은 그냥 말하지 않는 것이 더 낫겠다고 생각했습니다. 사실 사람들은 그녀의 가족이 예수님을 믿으면서도 매일 매일을 중독과 싸우며 힘들어한다는 것을 이해하지 못했습니다.

다이앤이 비록 기도제목을 그 모임 사람들과 같이 나누지는 못했지만 그래도 기도를 부탁할 수 있는 믿을만한 친구 몇 명은 있었습니다. 친구들은 합심하여 그녀가 사랑하는 그 가족이 심각한 중독의 굴레에서 벗어나 그리스도 안에서 자유를 경험할 수 있도록, 또 다이앤에게 필요한 마음의 평안과 인내심을 주시도록 하나님께 간구하였습니다. 다이앤은 그들과 기도하는 가운데 하나님과의 관계에서 오는 위로와 힘을 얻게 되었습니다.

우리가 간절하게 지속적으로 기도를 하고도 응답받지 못한 것 같이 느껴질 때가 많이 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 정말 관심을 가지시고 우리의 모든 기도를 듣고 계신다는 것을 우리는 확신할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리가 계속해서 그분과 가까이 동행하면서 “소망중에 즐거워하며 환난 중에 참으며 기도에 항상 힘쓰기를”(로마서 12:12) 권고하십니다. 우리는 하나님을 의지해야 합니다.

God Hears

Diane listened as the others in the group asked for prayers for their family members and friends facing challenges or illness. She had a family member who had been struggling with an addiction for years. But Diane kept her request silent. She couldn’t bear to see the looks on people’s faces or hear the questions or advice that often followed whenever she spoke the words aloud. She felt that this request was usually better left unspoken. Others simply didn’t understand how her loved one could be a believer in Jesus and still struggle daily.

Although Diane didn’t share her request with that group, she did have a few trusted friends she asked to pray with her. Together they asked God to set her loved one free from the very real bondage of addiction that he might experience freedom in Christ—and that God would give Diane the peace and patience she needed. As she prayed, she found comfort and strength from her relationship with Him.

Many of us have earnest, persistent prayers that seem to go unanswered. But we can be assured that God does care and He does hear all our requests. He urges us to continue to walk closely with Him, being “joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer” (ROMANS 12:12). We can lean on Him. ALYSON KIEDA

감사함으로 하나님께 영광을

최근 남편이 암 진단을 받았을 때, 의사는 슬픈 표정을 짓지 않았습니다. 그녀는 미소를 지으며 매일 매일 “적어도 세 가지 일에 대해서” 감사로 시작해보라고 제안했습니다. 감사는 우리의 마음을 열어 선하신 하나님의 격려를 얻게 해준다는 것을 알기에 남편 댄도 그것에 동의했습니다. 그래서 댄은 매일 감사의 말로 하루를 시작합니다. ‘하나님, 밤에 깊은 잠을 자게 해주셔서 감사합니다. 침대가 깨끗해서 감사하고, 햇빛과 식탁 위의 아침식사, 내 입술에 미소를 주셔서 감사합니다.’

댄의 감사하는 말은 진심에서 우러나온 것입니다. 하지만 그것이 너무 사소한 일을 얘기한다고 느껴지지 않나요? 삶의 작은 부분에 대해 우리가 찬양할 때 그것이 전능하신 하나님께 무슨 상관이 있을까요? 그에 대해 시편 50편에서 다윗의 악장 아삽이 분명히 답해줍니다. 하나님은 “너희 집에 있는 수소나 너희 가축우리에 있는 숫염소가 내게는 필요없다”(9절, 새번역)고 하시며, 예전에 이스라엘 백성들이 공식적으로 드린 감사의 희생제물 대신, 그분의 백성들인 우리가 감사의 마음과 삶을 그분께 드리기를 원하십니다(14,23절).

남편이 경험한 것처럼 우리가 전심으로 감사할 때 우리의 영혼이 성장합니다. 우리가 “환난 날”에 주님께 부르짖으면 주님이 우리를 “건지실” 것입니다(15절). 이 말씀이 남편이 2년의 치료기간 동안 영적, 육체적으로 고침을 받는다는 것인지, 아니면 이 삶이 끝난 후 그렇게 된다는 것인지 우리는 모릅니다. 그러나 지금 남편은 하나님의 사랑이 감사하고, 하나님이 구원자, 치료자, 친구가 되어주셔서 감사하다고 표현하며 기뻐합니다. 그리고 친구들도 ‘감사합니다’라는 이 아름다운 말을 들을 수 있어서 기뻐합니다.

Honoring God with Thanks

The doctor wasn’t frowning, despite talking to my husband about his recent cancer diagnosis. Smiling, she offered a suggestion: start each day by giving thanks. “For at least three things,” the doctor said. Dan agreed, knowing that gratitude opens our hearts to find encouragement in God’s goodness. Thus, Dan starts each day with words of praise. Thank You, God, for a good night’s sleep. For my clean bed. For sunshine. For breakfast on the table. For a smile on my lips.

Each word is heartfelt. But could it sound trivial? Does our praise in life’s small details matter to Almighty God? In Psalm 50, David’s chief musician, Asaph, offers a clear answer. God has “no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens” (V. 9). Instead of these once-formal Israelite sacrifices of gratitude, God wants His people to give Him our hearts and lives in gratitude (VV. 14, 23).

As my husband experienced, whole-hearted gratitude helps our spirits flourish. Then when we call on the Lord “in the day of trouble,” He will “deliver” us (V. 15). Does this mean Dan will be healed, spiritually and physically, during his two-year treatment? Or not until after this lifetime? We don’t know. But for now, Dan delights in showing God he’s grateful for His love, and for who God is: Redeemer. Healer. Friend. And friends delight to hear these beautiful words: Thank you. - PATRICIA RAYBON

순간을 주관하시는 주님

얼마 전에 나는 세 시간 거리에 있는 아들의 집에서 집짓는 일을 하고 있었습니다. 일은 예상보다 며칠 더 걸렸는데 나는 아침마다 오늘은 해지기 전까지 일을 다 마치게 해달라고 기도했습니다. 그러나 매일 저녁 해야 할 일이 더 남아 있었습니다.

나는 왜 그런지 궁금했습니다. 어떤 이유로 지연되고 있는 것일까? 바로 다음날 아침 그 답을 알게 되었습니다. 내가 연장을 막 집으려고 할 때 전화벨이 울렸고 낯선 사람의 목소리가 다급하게 들려왔습니다. “따님이 사고로 부상을 당했습니다. 즉시 오셔야겠습니다.”

딸이 아들 근처에 살고 있었기 때문에 나는 14분 만에 딸에게 갔습니다. 원래 집에 있었다면 세 시간이 걸렸을 것입니다. 나는 구급차를 따라 병원에 가서 수술 전에 딸을 위로해주었습니다. 딸의 손을 잡고 앉아 있으면서 만약 집짓는 일이 지연되지 않았다면 내가 여기에 와있지 못했을 것이라는 사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

우리의 모든 순간들은 하나님께 속해 있습니다. 이것은 하나님이 엘리사 선지자를 통해 다시 살린 어린 아들의 어머니가 경험한 것이기도 합니다(열왕기하 4:18-37). 그녀는 기근 때문에 나라를 떠났다가 몇 년 후 돌아와 왕에게 그녀의 땅을 돌려 달라고 간청했습니다. 마침 바로 그 때 왕은 선지자의 종 게하시와 이야기를 나누고 있었습니다. “게하시가 곧 엘리사가 [그녀의 아들을] 다시 살린 일을 왕에게 이야기할 때에” 그 여인이 왕에게 나아온 것입니다(8:5). 그녀의 요청은 받아들여졌습니다.

우리는 바로 다음 순간에 무슨 일이 일어날지 모르지만 하나님은 선을 이루시기 위해 어떤 상황이든 사용하실 수 있습니다. 오늘 하나님이 은혜를 주셔서 하나님과 함께 걸으며 그분이 우리에게 약속해주신 일들을 향해 기대하며 나아갈 수 있기를 소원합니다.

Lord of the Moment

Not long ago I was working on a construction project at my son’s home three hours away. The job took days longer than expected, and each morning I prayed we would finish by sunset. But every evening there was more to be done.

I wondered why. Could there be a reason for the delay? An answer came the next morning. I was picking up a tool when my phone rang and a stranger’s voice spoke urgently: “Your daughter was injured in an accident. You need to come immediately.”

She lived near my son, so it took just fourteen minutes to reach her. If I had been home, I would have been three hours away. I followed the ambulance to the hospital and comforted her before surgery. As I sat holding her hand I realized if my project hadn’t been delayed, I wouldn’t have been there.

Our moments belong to God. This was the experience of a woman whose son God had resurrected through the prophet Elisha (2 KINGS 4:18–37). She left the country because of famine and returned years later to beg the king for her land. At precisely that moment the king was conversing with the prophet’s servant Gehazi. “Just as Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had restored” her son, the woman walked in (8:5). Her request was granted.

We don’t know what even the next second brings, but God is graciously able to use any situation for good. May God give us grace to walk with Him expectantly into His appointments for us today. - JAMES BANKS

견고한 터

지난 여름 남편과 함께 건축가 프랭크 로이드 라이트가 1935년에 설계한 폴링워터라는 펜실베니아주 시골의 한 전원주택에 가 보았습니다. 나는 그와 같은 집은 생전 처음 보았습니다. 라이트는 마치 그곳에서 생겨서 자라난 것처럼 그 풍광에 자연스레 어울리는 그런 집을 짓기 원했고 실제로 그 목표를 이루었습니다. 그는 기존에 있는 폭포 주위에 집을 건축하였는데 집의 모양이 주위에 있는 튀어나온 바위처럼 생겼습니다. 관광 가이드는 건축물이 안전한 이유가 “집 전체의 수직 중심축이 바위 위에 놓여있기 때문”이라고 설명해주었습니다.

가이드의 말을 들으면서 예수님이 제자들에게 하신 말씀을 생각하지 않을 수가 없었습니다. 산상수훈에서 예수님은 그의 가르침이 제자들의 삶에 확고한 터가 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 만약 제자들이 주님의 말씀을 듣고 실행한다면 어떤 비바람에도 견딜 수 있겠지만, 반면에 듣고 순종치 않는 자들은 그 집을 모래 위에 지은 것과 같을 것입니다(마태복음 7:24-27). 나중에 바울은 그리스도가 터가 되시며 우리는 그 터 위에 영원히 지속될 공적을 쌓아가야 한다고 하면서 같은 말씀을 전했습니다(고린도전서 3:11).

예수님의 말씀을 듣고 순종하는 것은 우리의 삶을 안전하고 견고한 터 위에 세우는 것입니다. 바위 위에 지은 폴링워터처럼 우리 삶도 반석이신 그리스도 위에 아름답고 영원한 모습으로 지을 수 있습니다.

A Solid Foundation

Last summer my husband and I toured Fallingwater, a house in rural Pennsylvania designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935. I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Wright wanted to create a home that rose organically out of the landscape, as if it could have grown there—and he accomplished his goal. He built the house around an existing waterfall, and its style mirrors the neighboring rock ledges. Our tour guide explained what made the construction safe: “The whole vertical core of the house,” she said, “rests on boulders.”

Hearing her words, I couldn’t help but think of Jesus’s words to His disciples. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told them that what He was teaching would be the sure foundation for their lives. If they heard His words and put them into practice, they would be able to withstand any storms. Those who heard but didn’t obey, in contrast, would be like a house built on sand (MATTHEW 7:24–27). Later, Paul echoed this thought, writing that Christ is the foundation, and we must build upon it with work that will endure (1 CORINTHIANS 3:11).

When we listen to the words of Jesus and obey them, we’re building our lives on a steady, rock-solid foundation. Maybe our lives can look a little like Fallingwater, beautiful and built to last on the Rock. - AMY PETERSON

건초 쌓기

대학 시절 어느 여름에 나는 콜로라도주의 한 목장에서 일했습니다. 하루 종일 건초를 베느라 피곤하고 배고픈 어느 저녁, 나는 트랙터를 운전해서 마당으로 들어갔습니다. 나 자신이 트랙터를 아주 잘 다룬다고 생각했기 때문에 나는 핸들을 왼쪽으로 세게 돌리고 왼쪽 브레이크를 밟으면서 트랙터를 빙 돌렸습니다.

그때 트랙터의 건초깎기 장비가 떨어져 근처에 세워져 있던 500 갤런짜리 휘발유 탱크의 버팀목을 쳐버렸습니다. 휘발유 탱크는 쿵 하는 소리를 내면서 땅에 부딪쳤고 이음새가 벌어져 휘발유가 다 쏟아졌습니다.

목장주인이 근처에서 이 광경을 지켜 보고 있었습니다.

나는 트랙터에서 내려 더듬거리며 사과했습니다. 그리고는 제일 먼저 떠오른 생각대로 남은 여름 내내 무보수로 일하겠다고 말했습니다.

나이 든 목장주인은 부서진 잔해들을 잠시 동안 바라보더니 집을 향해 돌아서면서 “저녁 먹으러 가자”고 느릿느릿 말했습니다.

그때 마음속에 예수님이 말씀하신 한 짧은 이야기가 스쳐 지나갔습니다. 끔찍한 일을 저지른 한 젊은이에 대한 이야기입니다. 그는 “아버지, 내가 하늘과 아버지께 죄를 지었습니다.”라고 울면서 말하고는 이어서 “나를 아버지의 품꾼의 하나로 여기십시오.”라고 말하려고 했습니다. 그러나 그 말을 다 하기 전에 아버지는 아들의 말을 막았습니다. 아버지는 결국 “저녁 먹으러 가자”라고 한 것이었습니다 (누가복음 15:17-24).

이것이 바로 하나님의 놀라운 은혜입니다.

Putting Up Hay

When I was in college, I worked a summer on a ranch in Colorado. One evening, tired and hungry after a long day of mowing hay, I drove the tractor into the yard. Acting like the hot shot I thought I was, I cranked the steering wheel hard left, stamped on the left brake, and spun the tractor around.

The sickle was down and swept the legs out from under a 500-gallon gasoline tank standing nearby. The tank hit the ground with a resounding boom, the seams split, and all the gasoline spewed out.

The rancher stood nearby surveying the scene.

I got off the tractor, stammered an apology, and—because it was the first thing that popped into my mind offered to work the rest of the summer without pay.

The old rancher stared at the wreckage for a moment and turned toward the house. “Let’s go have dinner,” he drawled.

A scrap of a story Jesus told passed through my mind—a story about a young man who had done a terrible thing: “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you,” he cried. He intended to add, “Make me like one of your hired servants,” but before he could get all the words out of his mouth his father interrupted him. In essence, he said, “Let’s go have dinner” (LUKE 15:17–24).

여기 계시는 하나님

우리 집에는 “부르든 부르지 않든 하나님은 계신다”라고 써 있는 명판이 있습니다. 현대적으로 말하면 “인정하든 않든 하나님은 여기 계신다”로 읽을 수 있습니다.

기원전 8세기 말(755-715)에 살았던 구약의 호세아 선지자는 이와 비슷한 말을 히브리 민족에게 썼습니다. 그는 주님을 잊어버린 이스라엘 백성들에게(4:1) “힘써” (호세아 6:3) 하나님을 알라고 격려했습니다. 백성들은 하나님이 함께 하심을 잊어버리면서 하나님을 떠나기 시작했으며(12절) 오래지 않아 그들의 생각 속에는 하나님이 더 이상 존재하지 않게 되었습니다(시편 10:4 참조).

하나님을 인정하는 호세아의 단순 하고도 깊은 통찰력은 하나님이 우리 곁에 계시고 우리 인생의 기쁠 때나 어려울 때나 역사하고 계시다는 사실을 생각하게 합니다.

하나님을 인정한다는 것은 우리가 직장에서 진급할 때 예산 범위 내에서 할 일을 제 시간에 잘 마치도록 하나님이 통찰력을 주셨기 때문이라고 고백하는 것이기도 합니다. 그리고 설사 주택청약에 떨어졌어도 하나님을 인정하는 사람은 하나님께서 우리의 유익을 위해 일하고 계시다고 믿을 수 있습니다.

우리는 원하는 대학에 들어가지 못할 때에도 하나님이 우리와 함께 하신다는 것을 인정하고, 실망 가운데서도 그분의 임재 안에서 위로를 얻을 수 있습니다. 하나님을 인정한다는 것은 식사준비를 할 수 있는 부엌과 식재료를 하나님이 주셨다는 사실을 기억하는 것이기도 합니다.

하나님을 인정할 때 크든 작든 우리 삶의 성공이나 슬픔 가운데에 하나님이 함께 하셨다는 것을 기억하게 됩니다.

God Is Here

A plaque in our home states “Bidden or not bidden, God is present.” A modern version might read, “Acknowledged or unacknowledged, God is here.”

Hosea, an Old Testament prophet who lived in the late eighth century bc (755–715), wrote similar words to the Hebrew nation. He encouraged the Israelites to “press on” (HOSEA 6:3) to acknowledge God because they had forgotten Him (4:1). As the people forgot God’s presence, they began to turn away from Him (V. 12) and before long there was no room for God in their thoughts (SEE PSALM 10:4).

Hosea’s simple but profound insight to acknowledge God reminds us He’s near and at work in our lives, in both the joys and struggles.

To acknowledge God might mean that when we get a promotion at work, we recognize God gave us insight to finish our work on time and within budget. If our housing application is rejected, acknowledging God helps to sustain us as we trust Him to work in the situation for our good.

If we don’t make it into the college of our choice, we can acknowledge God is with us and take comfort in His presence even in our disappointment. As we enjoy dinner, to acknowledge God may be to remind ourselves of God’s provision of the ingredients and a kitchen to prepare the meal.

When we acknowledge God, we remember His presence in both the successes and sorrows, whether big or small, of our lives. - LISA SAMRA

조용한 증인

에이미는 복음을 전하는 것이 금지된 폐쇄된 국가에 삽니다. 그녀는 신생아들을 돌보는 큰 병원에서 일하는 잘 훈련된 간호사입니다. 에이미는 아주 헌신적으로 일하는 간호사여서 유난히 두드러져 보입니다. 그래서 많은 여성들이 그녀에게 호기심을 갖습니다. 감동을 받아 개인적으로 질문을 하는 사람들에게 에이미는 드러내놓고 자기의 구주에 대해 이야기합니다.

일을 잘하는 에이미를 시기하는 어떤 동료들이 그녀가 약을 훔쳤다고 고발 했습니다. 에이미의 상사들은 그 동료들의 말을 믿지 않았고, 얼마가 지나 관계당국이 범인을 찾아냈습니다. 이 사건으로 동료 간호사들이 그녀의 믿음에 관해 묻게 되었습니다. 에이미의 이야기를 들으며 베드로가 한 말이 생각납니다. “사랑하는 자들아......너희가 이방인 중에서 행실을 선하게 가져 너희를 악행한다고 비방하는 자들로 하여금 너희 선한 일을 보고 오시는 날에 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하려 함이라”(베드로전서 2:11-12).

하나님이 우리 안에서 일하시게 하면 우리의 집이나 직장, 학교에서의 매일의 삶이 다른 사람들에게 영향을 끼치게 됩니다. 우리 주위의 모든 사람이 우리의 언행을 지켜보고 있습니다. 하나님께 의지하여 우리의 행동과 생각을 주관하도록 하십시다. 그러면 믿지 않는 사람들이 영향을 받아 그들 중 어떤 사람들은 예수님을 믿게 될 것입니다.

Quiet Witness

Amy lives in a closed country where it’s forbidden to preach the gospel. She’s a trained nurse who works in a big hospital, caring for newborn babies. She’s such a committed professional that her work stands out, and many women are curious about her. They are moved to ask her questions in private. It’s then that Amy shares about her Savior openly.

Because of her good work, some coworkers were envious and accused her of stealing some medicine. Her superiors didn’t believe them, and authorities eventually found the culprit. This episode led some of her fellow nurses to ask about her faith. Her example reminds me of what Peter says: “Dear friends . . . . Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God” (1 PETER 2:11–12 NLT ).

Our everyday lives at home, in our work environment, or at school make an impact on others when we let God work in us. We’re surrounded by people who are watching the way we speak and behave. Let’s depend on God and have Him rule our actions and thoughts. Then we’ll influence those who don’t believe and this may lead some of them to turn in faith to Jesus. - KEILA OCHOA

지속적으로 도움을 주는 분

척추 부상으로 몸이 마비된 마티는 학교로 다시 돌아가 경영학석사 학위(MBA)를 얻기로 결심했습니다. 마티의 어머니 주디는 이런 아들의 목표가 실현되도록 도와주었습니다. 그녀는 모든 강의와 스터디 그룹에 아들과 함께 앉아 필기를 하며 기술적인 문제들을 해결해주었습니다. 주디는 아들이 졸업장을 받으려 단상에 오르는 것까지도 도와주었습니다. 마티가 해낼 것 같지 않았던 일이 지속적으로 실제적인 도움을 받음으로 가능해진 것입니다.

예수님은 이 세상을 떠난 뒤에 그의 제자들도 이와 비슷한 도움이 필요할 것을 아셨습니다. 주님은 앞으로 제자들과 함께 있지 않게 될 것이라고 말씀하시며 그들이 성령을 통해 하나님과 새롭게 연결될
것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 성령님은 순간순간 도움을 주시려고 그들과 함께 거하실 뿐만 아니라 그들 속에서 스승이자 인도자가 되실 분이었습니다(요한복음 14:17,26).

성령님은 예수님의 제자들에게 하나님이 주시는 내적인 도움을 주어, 그들이 복음을 전하기 위해 사방으로 흩어져 나갈 때 스스로 해결할 수 없는 것들을 인내하게 하실 것입니다. 환난 중에 있을 때에는 예수님이 그들에게 하신 모든 말씀을 생각나게 하실 것입니다(26절). “너희는 마음에 근심하지 말라......서로 사랑하라.......나는 부활이요 생명이다.”

당신의 힘과 능력으로는 감당치 못할 어떤 일에 직면해 있습니까? 당신은 성령님의 지속적인 도움을 의지할 수 있습니다. 당신 안에서 일하시는 성령님이 하나님이 받으셔야할 영광을 그분께 돌려드릴 것입니다.

A Constant Helper

After a spinal injury left Marty paralyzed, he decided to go back to school to earn his MBA. Marty’s mother, Judy, helped make his goal a reality. She sat with him through every lecture and study group, jotting notes and handling technology issues. She even assisted him onto the platform when he received his diploma. What might have been unattainable became possible with the consistent, practical help Marty received.

Jesus knew His followers would need a similar kind of support after He left the earth. When He told them about His upcoming absence, He said they would gain a new kind of connection with God through the Holy Spirit. This Spirit would be a moment-by-moment helper—a teacher and guide who would not only live with them but also be in them (JOHN 14:17, 26).

The Spirit would provide Jesus’s disciples with internal help from God, which would enable them to endure what they couldn’t handle on their own as they fanned out to share the good news. In moments of struggle, the Spirit would remind them of everything Jesus said to them (V. 26): Do not let your hearts be troubled . . . Love one another . . . I am the resurrection and the life.

Are you facing something that exceeds your own strength and ability? You can depend on the Spirit’s constant help. God’s Spirit working in you will bring Him the glory He deserves. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

어머니의 사랑

수는 어렸을 때 부모가 이혼하면서 양육권과 다른 문제들을 둘러싼 법적 다툼으로 한동안 보육원에서 살아야 했습니다. 수는 큰 아이들에게 괴롭힘을 당하면서 외로웠고 자신이 버려졌다고 느꼈습니다. 어머니는 한 달에 딱 한번 수를 찾아왔고 아버지는 거의 볼 수 없었습니다. 하지만 오랜 시간이 지난 후에야 어머니는 수에게 보육원의 규칙 때문에 자주 찾아가지 못했지만 딸을 잠깐이라도 보려는 희망으로 매일 울타리 옆에 서 있었다고 말했습니다. 어머니는 “어떤 때는 그냥 잘 있나 확인만 하려고 정원에서 놀고 있는 너를 그냥 지켜보곤 했어.”라고 말했습니다.

나는 수의 이야기를 들으며 하나님 사랑의 한 모습을 보았습니다. 우리도 몹시 힘들 때 버려져서 혼자라고 느낄 때가 있습니다. 그러나 사실 하나님이 우리를 언제나 지켜보고 계신다는 것이 얼마나 위로가 되는지 모릅니다!(시편 33:18). 우리는 주님을 볼 수 없을지라도 주님은 거기에 계십니다. 자녀를 사랑하는 부모처럼 우리가 어디를 가든 주님의 눈과 마음은 항상 우리에게 있습니다. 그러나 수의 엄마와는 달리 주님은 언제든지 우리를 위해 행동하실 수 있습니다.

시편 91편은 하나님이 그분의 자녀들을 구원하고 보호하고 세워주시는 모습을 보여줍니다. 하나님은 피난처나 대피소 그 이상의 분이십니다. 우리가 인생의 어두운 골짜기를 지날 때 전능하신 하나님이 우리를 지켜보시고 우리 삶 속에 살아 역사하신다는 사실을 알면 위로가 됩니다. 주님은 “내가 [너에게] 응답하리라 환난 당할 때에 내가 [너와] 함께 하여 [너를] 건지리라”(15절)라고 선포하십니다.

A Mother’s Love

When Sue’s parents divorced when she was young, the legal tussle over her custody and other matters resulted in her being sent to a children’s home for a while. Bullied by bigger kids, she felt lonely and abandoned. Her mother visited only once a month, and she hardly saw her father. It was only years later, however, that her mother told her that while the home’s rules prevented her from visiting more often, she had stood at the fence every single day, hoping to catch a glimpse of her daughter. “Sometimes,” she said, “I would just watch you playing in the garden, just to check if you were okay.”

When Sue shared this story, it gave me a glimpse of God’s love. Sometimes we may feel abandoned and alone in our struggles. How comforting it is know that God is in fact watching over us all the time! (PSALM 33:18). Even though we can’t see Him, He is there. Like a loving parent, His eyes and His heart are constantly on us wherever we go. Yet, unlike Sue’s mom, He can act on our behalf at any time.

Psalm 91 describes God delivering, protecting, and lifting up His children. He is more than a refuge and a shelter. As we navigate the dark valleys of life, we can take comfort in the knowledge that the all-powerful Lord is watching over us and is active in our lives. “I will answer [you],” He declares. “I will be with [you] in trouble, I will deliver [you]” (V. 15). - LESLIE KOH

우리가 가진 것

내 친구가 자기 집에서 어느 명절날을 맞아 가족과 친구들을 열정적으로 불러 모았습니다. 손님들은 식탁에 함께 모일 날을 고대하는 가운데 많은 사람들이 먹을 음식비용을 분담하기 위해 각자 음식을 가져오자고 했습니다. 몇몇은 빵을, 다른 사람들은 샐러드나 반찬을 가져오기로 했습니다. 하지만 한 여자 손님은 사랑하는 사람들과 저녁시간을 함께 보내고 싶지만 재정적으로 너무 빠듯하여 음식을 살 만한 여유가 없었습니다. 그래서 그녀는 음식을 준비하는 대신 선물로 집주인의 집을 청소해주었습니다.

그녀가 그냥 빈손으로 왔더라도 식사 자리에 환영 받았을 것입니다. 하지만 그녀는 자기에게 있는 것이 무엇인가 찾아보고 시간과 재능을 순전한 마음으로 그 모임에 가져왔습니다. 나는 그것이 바로 고린도후서 8장에서 바울 사도가 한 말에 담겨 있는 정신이라고 생각합니다. 동료 그리스도인들을 도와주기를 간절히 원했던 그들에게 바울은 그 노력을 끝까지 계속하라고 독려했습니다. 바울은 그들에게 주고자 하는 마음만 있다면 선물의 크기나 양에 상관없이 다 받으신다고 말하면서 주고자 하는 그들의 열심과 의지를 칭찬했습니다(12절).

우리는 종종 우리의 베푸는 것을 다른 사람들의 것과 바로 비교해봅니다. 특히 우리가 주고 싶은 만큼 많이 가지지 못했을 때 그렇습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 베푸는 것을 다르게 보십니다. 하나님은 우리가 가진 것을 기꺼이 주려는 그 마음을 사랑하십니다.

What We Have

My friend was eager to gather her family and friends for a festive holiday celebration at her home. Each of the guests looked forward to gathering around the table together and wanted to help defray the expense of feeding so many by contributing to the meal. Some would bring bread, others salad or a side dish. For one guest, however, money was exceptionally tight. Although she looked forward to spending the evening with those whom she loved, she couldn’t afford to purchase any food. So, instead, she offered to clean the host’s home as her gift.

She would have been welcome at the table had she come empty-handed. Yet she looked at what she did have to offer her time and skills—and brought them to the gathering with her whole heart. I think that’s precisely the spirit of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 8. They had been eager to give to help some fellow Christians, and he urged them to follow through on that effort. He commended them for their desire and their willingness, saying their motivation to give is what makes a gift of any size or amount acceptable (V. 12).

We’re often quick to compare our giving to that of others, especially when our resources don’t afford us the luxury of giving as much as we’d like to. But God views our giving differently: it’s our willingness to give what we have that He loves. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG
