메시아를 기다리며

시동이 걸리지 않아 차를 고치려는데 정비사가 너무 어려 보였습니다. 남편 댄은 믿음이 가지 않았는지 내게 “어린애잖아” 하고 귓속말을 했습니다. 그 젊은이를 믿지 못하는 남편의 이 말은 예수님이 누구인지를 믿지 못했던 나사렛 사람들의 투덜거리는 소리처럼 들렸습니다.

그 사람들은 예수님이 회당에서 가르치실 때 “이는 그 목수의 아들이 아니냐” (마태복음 13:55)고 수군거렸습니다. 자기들이 잘 아는 사람이 병을 고치고 가르친다는 말을 듣고 믿기지 않아서 비웃는 태도로 따졌습니다. “이 사람의 이 지혜와 이런 능력이 어디서 났느냐”(54절). 예수님을 믿기는커녕 나사렛 사람들은 주님이 드러내신 권위를 오히려 못마땅하게 여겼습니다(15,58절).

그들과 똑같이 우리도 우리 구주의 지혜와 능력을 믿기 힘들 때가 있습니다. 우리에게 익숙하고 평범한 일상생활 속에서는 더욱 그렇습니다. 여기서 예수님의 도우심을 기대하고 바라지 않으면 우리 자신의 인생을 바꾸어놓을 그분의 놀라운 능력을 놓쳐버릴지도 모릅니다(58절).

고장 난 우리 차를 수리해줄 사람은 바로 자기 앞에 서 있는 그 젊은 사람밖에 없다는 것을 깨달은 남편은 결국 그 젊은이에게 수리를 맡기기로 하고 우리 고물차의 배터리를 봐달라고 했습니다. 정비사는 볼트 하나를 바꾸어 끼더니 순식간에 차를 고쳐놓았습니다. 엔진이 돌아가고 불이 환하게 켜졌습니다. “이거 성탄절같이 불이 환하네.” 남편의 말이었습니다.

우리도 이처럼 매일 동행하는 삶 속에 새로운 빛과 생명, 도우심을 가져다주실 메시아를 기대하고 만날 수 있기를 소원합니다.

Expect the Messiah

The repairman looked young—too young to fix our problem, a car that wouldn’t start. “He’s just a kid,” my husband, Dan, whispered to me, showing his doubt. His disbelief in the young man sounded like the grumbling in Nazareth where citizens doubted who Jesus was.

“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?” they asked (MATTHEW 13:55) when Jesus taught in the synagogue. Scoffing, they were surprised to hear that someone they knew was healing and teaching, and asked, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” (V 54). Instead of trusting in Jesus, they were offended by the authority He displayed (VV 15, 58).

In this same way, we may struggle to trust in our Savior’s wisdom and power, especially in the familiar and ordinary details of our daily lives. Failing to expect His help, we may miss out on the wonder of His life transforming our own (V 58).

As Dan found, the help he needed stood right in front of him. Finally agreeing to accept the young man’s aid, my husband allowed him to look at our old car’s battery. By switching just one bolt, the mechanic had the car running in seconds—engine humming and lights ablaze. “It lit up like Christmas,” Dan said.

So too may we expect and experience the Messiah bringing fresh light, life, and help into our daily journey with Him. PATRICIA RAYBON

“여호와께 속하였다”

요즈음 “문신”이 크게 유행하고 있다는 것은 아주 쉽게 알 수 있습니다. 매우 작아 거의 알아볼 수 없는 문신이 있는가 하면, 운동선수나 영화배우, 일반인들까지 다양한 색상과 글, 혹은 무늬로 몸의 상당 부분을 덮어버리기도 합니다. 이 유행은 이제 생활의 한 부분이 되어버린 것 같습니다. 2014년 한 해 동안 사람들이 문신하는데 든 비용이 30억 달러이며, 문신을 지우는 데 추가로 6600만 달러가 들었다고 합니다.

문신에 대해 어떻게 생각하는지는 몰라도, 이사야 44장에는 “여호와께 속하였다”(5절)라고 사람들이 손에 무언가를 쓰는 것에 관한 은유적인 표현이 있습니다. 이 “스스로 새긴 문신”은 하나님께서 그가 선택하신(1절) 사람들을 돌보시는 것을 말하는 그 문단 전체에서 절정을 이루는 부분입니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님의 도우심을 믿었고(2절), 그들의 땅과 자손은 축복을 받기로 기록되어 있었습니다(3절). 간단하면서도 능력 있는 두 마디 “여호와께 속하였다”라는 말은 하나님의 백성들이 스스로 하나님의 소유물이며, 그래서 하나님이 자기들을 돌보실 줄을 알고 있었다는 사실을 확약해줍니다.

예수님을 믿음으로 하나님께 나아온 자들은 스스로 “여호와께 속하였다”라고 자신 있게 말할 수 있습니다. 우리는 그의 백성이요, 그의 양들이며, 그의 자손들이고, 그의 유업이며, 또 그가 거하시는 곳입니다. 이것들은 인생의 여러 가지 우여곡절을 겪으면서 우리가 매달려야 하는 속성입니다. 겉으로 드러나는 표식이나 문신은 없어도, 우리는 주님께 속해 있다는 성령의 증거를 마음속에 지니고 있다는 사실만으로도 용기를 가질 수 있습니다(로마서 8:16-17 참조).

“The Lord’s”

It doesn’t take much to notice that getting “inked” is very popular these days. Some tattoos are so small that one barely notices them. Others—from athletes to actors to everyday people—have opted to cover much of their bodies with multicolored inks, words, and designs. The trend seems like it’s here to stay, a trend that netted $3 billion in revenue in 2014—and an additional $66 million for tattoo removal.

Regardless of how you may feel about tattoos, Isaiah 44 speaks metaphorically about people writing something on their hands: “The LORD ’s” (V 5). This “self-tattoo” is the climax of an entire paragraph that speaks of the Lord’s care for those He had chosen (V 1). They could count on His help (V 2); and their land and descendants were marked for blessing (V 3). Two simple, powerful words, “The LORD ’s,” affirmed that God’s people knew they were His possession and that He would take care of them.

Those who come to God through faith in Jesus Christ can confidently say of themselves, “The Lord’s!” We are His people, His sheep, His offspring, His inheritance, His dwelling. These are the things we cling to in the varied seasons of life. While we may have no external mark or tattoo, we can take heart that we have the witness of God’s Spirit in our hearts that we belong to Him (SEE ROMANS 8:16–17). ARTHUR JACKSON

변함없는 사랑

“사랑해!” 내가 자동차 문을 쾅 닫고 학교로 향하자 아빠가 그렇게 큰 소리로 외쳤습니다. 그때 나는 6학년이었고, 몇 달 동안 우리는 매일 아침 거의 똑같은 대사를 반복했습니다. 학교에 도착하면 아빠는 “멋진 하루 보내! 사랑해!”라고 하셨고, 내 대답은 그저 “안녕히 가세요.”였습니다. 아빠에게 화가 나서도 아니었고 아빠를 무시해서 그런 것도 아니었습니다. 그저 내 생각에만 몰두하다 보니 아빠 말이 귀에 들어오지 않았던 것입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 아빠의 사랑은 변함없이 계속되었습니다.

하나님의 사랑도 그와 같습니다. 아니 그보다 더합니다. 그 사랑은 무한히 지속됩니다. 이런 변함없는 사랑을 표현하는 히브리말은 ‘헤세드’입니다. ‘헤세드’라는 말은 구약성경에 계속 반복적으로 사용되었고, 시편 136편에만 26번이나 나옵니다! 그러나 어떤 현대어로도 그 의미를 충분히 담아내지 못하고, 단지 “친절,” “사랑스러움,” “자비,” 또는 “충실” 등으로 번역되고 있을 뿐입니다. ‘헤세드’는 언약에 근거한 변함없이 신실한 사랑을 말합니다. 하나님의 백성들이 죄를 범했을 때에도 하나님은 그들을 신실하게 사랑하셨습니다. 변함없는 사랑은 하나님의 성품에서 빼놓을 수 없는 부분입니다(출애굽기 34:6).

어렸을 때 나는 때때로 아버지의 사랑을 당연한 것으로 여겼습니다. 지금도 나는 가끔 하나님 아버지의 사랑을 그렇게 여길 때가 있습니다. 하나님의 말씀을 듣고도 반응하기를 잊어버리고, 감사할 줄도 모릅니다. 그렇지만 나를 향하신 하나님의 사랑이 여전히 변함없다는 것을 압니다. 그것은 내 모든 삶의 확실한 기초를 만들어주는 진실입니다.

Steadfast Love

“I love you!” my dad called out as I slammed the car door and headed into school. I was in sixth grade, and for months we had played out basically the same scenario every morning. We arrived at school, Dad said, “Have a great day! I love you!” and all I said was “Bye.” I wasn’t angry with him or ignoring him. I was simply so wrapped up in my own thoughts that I didn’t notice his words. Nevertheless, my dad’s love remained steadfast.

God’s love is like that—and more. It endures forever. The Hebrew word that expresses this steadfast kind of love is h esed . It’s used over and over again in the Old Testament, and twenty-six times in Psalm 136 alone! No modern word can fully capture the meaning; we translate it “kindness,” “loving-kindness,” “mercy,” or “loyalty.” Hesed is a love that is based on covenant commitment; love that is loyal and faithful. Even when God’s people sinned, He was faithful in loving them. Steadfast love is an integral part of the character of God (EXODUS 34:6).

When I was a child, I sometimes took my dad’s love for granted. Sometimes now I do the same thing with my heavenly Father’s love. I forget to listen to God and respond. I forget to be grateful. Yet I know that God’s love for me remains steadfast—a reality that provides a sure foundation for all of my life. AMY PETERSON

본향

생업으로 부동산업을 하던 친구가 최근에 암으로 세상을 떠났습니다. 아내 수와 함께 팻시에 대해 회상하던 중, 아내가 여러 해 전에 팻시가 예수님께로 인도했던 남자가 지금은 우리의 좋은 친구가 되어 있다는 사실을 떠올렸습니다.

팻시가 많은 가정들이 이 마을에 살 수 있도록 집 찾는 일을 도와주었을 뿐 아니라, 또 어떤 가정들을 위해서는 그들의 영원한 집을 하늘에 마련하도록 도와주었다는 사실을 회상하니 얼마나 큰 힘이 되는지 모릅니다.

예수님이 우리를 위해 십자가를 지실 준비를 하실 때 주님은 우리의 영원한 거처에 대해 깊은 관심을 보이셨습니다. 주님은 제자들에게 “내가 너희를 위하여 거처를 예비하러 가노라”고 말씀하시면서, 하나님 아버지 집에는 주를 믿는 모든 사람들을 위한 거처가 충분히 마련되어 있다는 사실을 일깨워주셨습니다(요한복음 14:2).

우리는 이 땅에서 가족이 먹고 자고 함께 지낼 수 있는 특별한 공간으로 아주 좋은 집을 갖고 싶어 합니다. 그런데 우리가 다음 삶으로 옮겨갈 때 하나님이 우리의 영원한 거처를 마련해 놓으셨다는 것을 알게 된다면 얼마나 놀라운 일일지 생각해보십시오. 지금 우리와 함께 계시고, 또 나중에 우리를 위해 예비하신 곳에서(14:3) 우리와 함께 하시며 “풍성한”(요한복음 10:10) 삶을 주시는 하나님을 찬양합시다.

예수님을 믿는 자들을 위해 하나님께서 예비하신 것을 생각하면, 우리도 팻시처럼 일을 하면서 다른 사람들에게 예수님을 전해야한다는 도전을 받습니다.

Home

Recently a friend who sold homes for a living died of cancer. As my wife and I reminisced about Patsy, Sue recalled that many years ago Patsy had led a man to faith in Jesus and he became a good friend of ours. How encouraging to recall that Patsy not only helped families find homes to live in here in our community, but she also helped others make sure they had an eternal home.

As Jesus prepared to go to the cross for us, He showed a keen interest in our eternal accommodations. He told His disciples, “I go to prepare a place for you” and reminded them that there would be plenty of room in His Father’s house for all who trusted Him (JOHN 14:2 NKJV ).

We love to have a nice home in this life—a special place for our family to eat, sleep, and enjoy each other’s company. But think of how amazing it will be when we step into the next life and discover that God has taken care of our eternal accommodations. Praise God for giving us life “to the full” (JOHN 10:10), including His presence with us now and our presence with Him later in the place He is preparing for us (14:3).

Thinking of what God has in store for those who trust Jesus can challenge us to do as Patsy did and introduce others to Him. DAVE BRANON

하나님의 보이지 않는 손길

내 친구는 미국 선교사 부부의 양자로 입양되어 가나에서 자랐습니다. 가족과 함께 미국으로 돌아온 후 대학에 진학했으나 중간에 그만두어야만 했습니다. 그 후 군에 입대한 그는 세계 곳곳에 다니게 되었고 또 나중에는 대학 학비를 도움 받게 되었습니다. 그 모든 과정에 하나님이 역사하셔서 그에게 특별한 역할을 감당하도록 준비시키신 것입니다. 지금 그는 전 세계 독자들에게 도움이 되는 기독교 문서를 쓰거나 편집하는 일을 하고 있습니다.

그의 아내의 이야기도 흥미롭습니다. 그녀는 간질병 치료를 위해 먹어야 하는 약이 너무 독해서 대학 첫 해에 화학 시험에서 낙제점수를 받았습니다. 고민 끝에 과학 전공을 포기하고 이수하기가 훨씬 편한 미국 수화 전공으로 과를 바꾸었습니다. 그 때의 일을 되돌아보면서 그녀는 이렇게 말합니다. “하나님은 더 큰 목적을 위해 내 삶의 진로를 바꾸고 계셨습니다.” 지금 그녀는 청각 장애인들에게 삶을 변화시키는 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 일을 하고 있습니다.

간혹 하나님이 당신을 어디로 이끄시는지 궁금합니까? 시편 139편 16절은 우리 삶에 역사하시는 하나님의 주권적인 손길을 인정하고 있습니다. “내 형질이 이루기 전에 주의 눈이 보셨으며 나를 위하여 정한 날이 하나도 되기 전에 주의 책에 다 기록이 되었나이다.” 우리는 하나님이 우리 삶의 상황들을 어떻게 쓰실지 알지 못하지만, 하나님이 우리의 모든 사정을 아시고 우리의 발걸음을 인도하신다는 사실을 아니까 안도할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 주권적인 손길이 눈에 안 보일지는 모르지만, 하나님은 결코 자리를 비우시지 않습니다.

God’s Hidden Hand

My friend was adopted by a missionary couple from the United States and grew up in Ghana. After his family moved back to the US, he began college but had to drop out. Later, he signed on with the military, which eventually helped him pay for college and took him all over the world. Through it all, God was at work, preparing him for a special role. Today, he writes and edits Christian literature that ministers to an international audience.

His wife also has an interesting story. She failed her chemistry exams during her first year of college due to the strong medication she had to take for epilepsy. After some careful deliberation, she switched from studying science to studying American Sign Language, which had a more manageable workload. Reflecting on that experience, she says, “God was redirecting my life for a greater purpose.” Today, she is making His life-changing Word accessible to the hearing-impaired.

Do you sometimes wonder where God is leading you? Psalm 139:16 acknowledges God’s sovereign hand in our lives: “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” We don’t know how God will use the circumstances of our life, but we can rest in the knowledge that God knows everything about us and is directing our footsteps. Though His sovereign hand may seem hidden, He’s never absent. POH FANG CHIA

외로운 크리스마스

나에게 가장 외로웠던 크리스마스는 가나 북부의 사코구 근처에 있는 할아버지의 시골집에 있을 때였습니다. 그 때 나는 겨우 열다섯 살이었고 부모님과 형제들은 천 킬로미터나 멀리 떨어진 곳에 있었습니다. 그때까지 식구들과 마을 친구들과 함께 지낼 때 크리스마스는 언제나 굉장하고 기억에 남을만한 행사였습니다. 그러나 그 크리스마스는 고요하고 외로웠습니다. 크리스마스 이른 아침에 방바닥 돗자리에 누워 있으니 옛날 마을에서 불렀던 노래가 떠올랐습니다. ‘어느덧 이 해도 저물고 크리스마스가 돌아왔네. 하나님의 아들이 태어나시니 모든 이에게 평화와 기쁨이 내렸네.’ 나는 슬픈 마음으로 이 노래를 부르고 또 불렀습니다.

할머니가 들어오시더니 물으셨습니다. “그게 무슨 노래니?” 조부모님은 크리스마스에 대해, 아니 그리스도에 대해 알지 못했습니다. 그래서 내가 알고 있는 크리스마스에 대해 말씀드렸습니다. 그러는 동안 나의 외로움에 환하게 빛이 비쳤습니다.

양치기 소년 다윗은 들판에서 홀로 양들과만 함께 지내며 이따금 맹수들과 싸우면서 외로움을 경험했습니다. 그때만 외로웠던 것도 아니었을 것입니다. 훗날에도 그는 “주여 나는 외롭고 괴로우니”(시편 25:16)라고 기록하고 있으니까요. 그러나 다윗은 외로움 때문에 낙담하지 않았습니다. 오히려 그는 이렇게 노래했습니다. “내가 주를 바라오니 성실과 정직으로 나를 보호하소서”(21절).

우리 모두는 때때로 외로움에 직면합니다. 하지만 올해는 어디서 크리스마스를 맞이하든지, 혼자이든지 아니면 누구와 함께이든지, 그리스도와 함께 이 명절을 즐겁게 보낼 수 있기 바랍니다.

Lonely Christmas

The loneliest Christmas I ever spent was in my grandfather’s cottage near Sakogu, northern Ghana. I was just fifteen, and my parents and siblings were a thousand kilometers away. In previous years, when I’d been with them and my village friends, Christmas was always big and memorable. But this Christmas was quiet and lonely. As I lay on my floor mat early Christmas morning, I remembered a local song: The year has ended; Christmas has come; the Son of God is born; peace and joy to everybody. Mournfully, I sang it over and over.

My grandmother came and asked, “What song is that?” My grandparents didn’t know about Christmas—or about Christ. So I shared what I knew about Christmas with them. Those moments brightened my loneliness.

Alone in the fields with only sheep and occasional predators, the shepherd boy David experienced loneliness. It would not be the only time. Later in his life he wrote, “I am lonely and afflicted” (PSALM 25:16). But David didn’t allow loneliness to cause him to be despondent. Instead, he sang: “My hope, LORD, is in you” (V 21).

From time to time we all face loneliness. Wherever Christmas may find you this year, in loneliness or in companionship, you can enjoy the season with Christ. LAWRENCE DARMANI

일으켜 세워주는 손

우리 아이들은 아이다호 주의 추운 겨울에 뒷마당에 있는 얼음판 위에서 스케이트 타는 스릴을 좋아했습니다. 하지만 아이들이 어렸을 때 스케이트 타기를 가르치기란 쉽지 않은 일이었습니다. 넘어지면 아프다는 것을 잘 아는 아이들에게 딱딱하고 차가운 빙판 위에 몸의 중심을 잘 잡고 서 있도록 가르치기가 쉽지 않았기 때문입니다. 발이 미끄러져 아이들이 넘어질 때마다 남편과 내가 손으로 일으켜 세워 자세를 바르게 하여 몸의 균형을 잡도록 해주었습니다.

넘어졌을 때 도와 일으켜 세워주는 사람이 있다는 것이 바로 전도서에 쓰여 있는 돕는 손길이라는 선물입니다. 다른 사람과 함께 일을 하면 일이 더 수월해지고 더 효과적이 되며(4:9), 친구는 우리 삶에 따뜻함을 가져다줍니다. 우리가 힘든 일에 부딪쳤을 때 누군가 옆에서 마음으로, 또 실제로 도움을 준다면 좋은 일입니다. 이런 인간관계에서 우리는 힘을 얻고 목적을 이루며 위안을 받습니다.

우리가 삶의 어려움이라는 차가운 얼음판 위에 넘어질 때 가까이에 도움의 손길이 있습니까? 그렇다면 그것은 아마도 하나님께서 보내주신 손길일 것입니다. 혹은 누군가에게 친구가 필요할 때 우리가 그 사람을 일으켜 세우시려는 하나님의 손길이 될 수 있을까요? 우리가 친구가 되어줄 때 종종 친구가 생깁니다. 우리를 다시 일으켜 세워줄 사람이 근처에 아무도 없어 보일 때, 하나님이 우리를 도우시기 위해 언제나 함께 계시다는 것을 알면 위로가 됩니다(시편 46:1). 우리가 하나님께 도움을 청하면 그분은 언제나 흔들리지 않는 손길로 우리를 붙들어주십니다.

A Hand Up

My children have enjoyed the thrill of a backyard iceskating rink during our cold Idaho winters. When they were young, learning to skate was challenging: persuading them to deliberately set foot on the hard, icy surface proved difficult because they knew the pain of falling. Each time their feet slid out from under them, my husband or I would reach out to pull them again to their feet, setting them upright and steadying their frames.

Having someone there to help us up when we fall is the gift of a helping hand depicted in Ecclesiastes. Working with another makes our work sweeter and more effective (4:9), and a friend brings warmth to our lives. When we encounter challenges, it helps to have someone come alongside with practical and emotional support. These relationships can give us strength, purpose, and comfort.

When we find ourselves flattened on the cold ice of life’s hardships, is there a helping hand nearby? If so, it might be from God. Or when someone else needs a friend, could we be God’s answer to lift them up? In being a companion, we often find one. If it appears that no one is nearby to lift us to our feet again, we can find comfort in knowing that God is our ever-present help (PSALM 46:1). As we reach out to Him, He’s ready to steady us with His firm grip. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

크리스마스에 해야 할 질문

달력이 12월로 넘어가기 훨씬 전부터 북쪽에 있는 우리 마을은 크리스마스 기분으로 들뜨기 시작합니다. 어떤 병원은 여러 가지 색깔의 전구가 달린 줄로 크고 작은 나무들을 촘촘히 장식하여 숨 막히게 아름다운 밤 풍경을 만들어내고, 어떤 가게는 건물 자체를 장식하여 하나의 거대하고도 화려하게 포장된 크리스마스 선물처럼 보이게도 합니다. 어디를 둘러봐도 크리스마스 기분을 느낄 수 있습니다. 뭐 연말연시의 상술이기도 하겠지요.

이러한 화려한 장식을 좋아하는 사람들도 있지만, 그것을 좀 더 냉소적으로 보는 사람들도 있습니다. 그러나 중요한 질문은 다른 사람들이 크리스마스를 어떻게 받아들이는가가 아닙니다. 그보다는, 우리 한 사람 한 사람이 이 축제가 ‘우리에게’ 어떤 의미가 있는지 생각해볼 필요가 있습니다.

예수님은 서른 살이 조금 지났을 때 제자들에게 이렇게 물어보셨습니다. “사람들이 인자를 누구라 하느냐”(마태복음 16:13). 제자들은 다른 사람들에게서 들었던 대로 세례 요한, 엘리야, 혹은 다른 선지자라고 한다고 대답했습니다. 그러자 예수님은 제자들의 생각을 다시 물어보셨습니다. “‘너희는’ 나를 누구라 하느냐?”(15절). 베드로가 대답했습니다. “주는 그리스도시요 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이시니이다”(16절).

많은 사람들이 그 아기가 진정 누구인지 생각지도 않고 크리스마스를 축하할 것입니다. 우리가 그런 사람들을 대할 때, 그들이 다음과 같은 중요한 질문을 생각해볼 수 있도록 도와주어야 합니다. 크리스마스는 그저 마구간에서 태어난 아기에 관한 훈훈한 이야기에 불과할까요, 아니면 우리의 창조주께서 자신의 피조물들을 진짜 찾아오셔서 우리들 중 한 사람이 되신 것일까요?

Questions at Christmas

Well before the calendar flips to December, Christmas cheer begins to bubble up in our northern town. A medical office drapes its trees and shrubs in close-fitting strings of lights, each a different color, illuminating a breathtaking nighttime landscape. Another business decorates its building to look like an enormous, extravagantly wrapped Christmas present. It’s difficult to turn anywhere without seeing evidence of Christmas spirit—or at least seasonal marketing.

Some people love these lavish displays. Others take a more cynical view. But the crucial question isn’t how others observe Christmas. Rather, we each need to consider what the celebration means to us. A little more than thirty years after His birth, Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” (MATTHEW 16:13). They gave responses others had given: John the Baptist, Elijah, maybe another prophet. Then Jesus made it personal: “Who do you say I am?” (V 15). Peter replied, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (V 16).

Many will celebrate Christmas without a thought about who the Baby really is. As we interact with them, we can help them consider these crucial questions: Is Christmas just a heartwarming story about a baby born in a stable? Or did our Creator visit His creation and become one of us? TIM GUSTAFSON

하나님이셔서 감사합니다!

내가 어머니를 간병하며 암센터에서 지내고 있을 때, 우리가 있던 병실 복도에 조금 떨어진 병실에서 남편 프랭크를 돌보고 있는 로리를 알게 되었습니다. 병원의 공동구역에서 우리는 수다를 떨고, 웃고, 감정도 터트리고, 울기도 하고, 같이 기도도 하곤 했습니다. 우리는 각자 사랑하는 사람들을 보살피고 있으면서, 서로에게 도움을 주는 것이 좋았습니다.

어느 날 나는 슈퍼마켓에 가는 병원 셔틀버스를 놓쳤습니다. 그날 저녁 늦게, 로리가 자기 차로 나를 가게에 데려다주겠다고 해서 고마워서 눈물이 났습니다. 나는 “당신 때문에 감사해요.” 라고 말했습니다. 내가 진정 고마웠던 것은 그녀가 친구로서 내게 무엇을 해주었기 때문이 아니라 한 인간으로서 그녀의 됨됨이 때문이었습니다.

시편 100편도 하나님이 하신 일 때문이 아니라 단지 하나님이시기 때문에 감사하는 것을 보여줍니다. 시편 기자는 “여호와가 우리 하나님이신 줄을”(3절) 확실히 알고 있기에 “온 땅이”(1절) “여호와께 즐거운 찬송을 부르기를”(2절) 권유하고 있습니다. 그리고 창조주 하나님은 우리를 그의 임재하시는 곳에 부르셔서 “그에게 감사하며 그의 이름을 송축하라”(4절) 하십니다. 그렇습니다. 하나님은 “선하시고” 그의 “인자하심이 영원하시며” 그의 “성실하심이 대대에 이를”것이기 때문에(5절), 주님은 우리가 계속해서 드리는 감사를 받기에 합당하신 분이신 것입니다.

하나님은 언제나 이 우주의 창조주이시고 운행하시는 분이시며, 우리를 친밀하게 사랑하시는 아버지이십니다. 하나님은 우리의 진솔한 기쁨이 가득한 감사를 받으시기에 합당한 분이십니다.

Thanks for Being You!

When I served as my mom’s live-in caregiver at a cancer center, I got to know Lori, another caregiver who lived down the hallway from us with her husband, Frank. I would chat, laugh, vent, cry, and pray with Lori in the shared living areas. We enjoyed supporting each other as we cared for our loved ones.

One day, I missed the free shuttle that took residents to buy groceries. Lori offered to drive me to the store later that evening. With grateful tears, I accepted her offer. “Thanks for being you,” I said. I truly appreciated her for who she was as a person, not just for what she did for me as a friend.

Psalm 100 demonstrates an appreciation of God for who He is, not simply for all He does. The psalmist invites “all the earth” (V 1) to “worship the L ORD with gladness” (V 2), being confident in knowing “the L ORD is God” (V 3). Our Maker invites us into His presence to “give thanks to him and praise his name” (V 4). Yes, the Lord remains worthy of our ongoing thankfulness because He “is good,” His “love endures forever,” and His “faithfulness continues through all generations” (V 5).

God will always be the Creator and Sustainer of the universe and our intimately loving Father. He deserves our genuine joy-filled gratitude. XOCHITL DIXON

안전한 곳

우리 형제들은 웨스트 버지니아의 나무가 우거진 산비탈에서 자랐는데, 그곳은 우리가 상상의 나래를 맘껏 펼칠 수 있는 다양한 풍경을 지니고 있었습니다. 타잔처럼 나무줄기를 타기도 하고 ‘스위스 가족 로빈슨’처럼 나무 위에 집을 짓기도 하면서, 우리가 읽었던 이야기와 영화 속에서 본 각본대로 놀았습니다. 우리가 좋아했던 놀이 중의 하나는 요새를 만들어 놓고 그 안에 들어가면 공격으로부터 안전하다는 기분을 누리는 것이었습니다. 세월이 지나 내 아이들도 이불과 시트, 베개로 요새를 쌓고 가상의 적으로부터 그들만의 “안전한 곳”을 만들곤 했습니다. 우리가 안전하다고 느낄 수 있는 은신처를 갖고 싶어 하는 것은 거의 본능적인 것 같습니다.

이스라엘의 노래하는 시인 다윗은 안전한 곳을 찾을 때 언제나 하나님을 떠나 다른 무엇을 찾지 않았습니다. 시편 17편 8절은 이렇게 단언합니다. “[하나님이] 나를 눈동자 같이 지키시고 주의 날개 그늘 아래에 감추사.” 구약성경에 기록된 다윗의 삶과 그가 직면했던 끊임없는 위협들을 생각해볼 때 위의 구절은 하나님에 대한 신뢰의 정도가 놀라울 정도로 크다는 것을 보여주고 있습니다(6절). 그런 위협들에도 불구하고 다윗은 진정한 안전은 하나님 안에서만 찾을 수 있다고 확신하였습니다.

우리도 다윗과 같은 확신을 가질 수 있습니다. 우리를 결코 떠나지도 버리지도 않으시겠다고 약속하신 하나님은(히브리서 13:5) 우리가 매일 우리의 삶을 맡길 수 있는 분이십니다. 비록 우리가 위험한 세상에 살고 있지만, 우리 하나님은 현재는 물론 영원토록 평안과 확신을 주십니다. 그분이 우리의 안전한 곳입니다.

A Safe Place

My brothers and I grew up on a wooded hillside in West Virginia that provided a fertile landscape for our imaginations. Whether swinging from vines like Tarzan or building tree houses like the Swiss Family Robinson, we played out the scenarios we found in the stories we read and movies we watched. One of our favorites was building forts and then pretending we were safe from attack. Years later, my kids built forts out of blankets, sheets, and pillows—constructing their own “safe place” against imaginary enemies. It seems almost instinctive to want a hiding place where you can feel safe and secure.

When David, the singer-poet of Israel, sought a safe place, he looked no further than God. Psalm 17:8 asserts, “[God,] keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” When you consider the Old Testament record of David’s life and the almost constant threats he faced, these words reveal an amazing level of confidence in God (V 6). In spite of those threats, he was convinced his true safety was found in Him.

We can know that same confidence. The God who promises to never leave or forsake us (HEBREWS 13:5) is the One we trust with our lives every day. Although we live in a dangerous world, our God gives us peace and assurance—both now and forever. He is our safe place. BILL CROWDER
