위대한 절정

부모님은 내가 컨트리 음악부터 고전음악까지 어떤 장르의 음악도 다 좋아하도록 가르쳐주셨습니다. 그래서 모스크바 국립 교향악단의 연주를 들으려고 러시아의 웅장한 뮤직홀 중 하나인 모스크바 음악원으로 걸어 들어가면서 내 심장은 빠르게 뛰었습니다. 지휘자를 따라 단원들이 거장 차이코프스키의 작품을 연주할 때 주제 부분이 점점 강해지더니 강력한 절정을 이루고, 아주 심오하고 감동적인 음악적 클라이맥스에 도달했습니다. 그 황홀한 순간 청중은 기립하여 환호를 보냈습니다.

성경 66권은 모두 역사상 가장 강력한 절정을 향해 쓰여져 있습니다. 바로 예수 그리스도의 십자가와 부활입니다. 에덴동산에서 아담과 하와가 죄에 빠진 순간부터 하나님은 구세주가 오실 것을 약속해주셨으며(창세기 3:15), 구약성경 전체를 통해 이 주제는 이어지고 있습니다. 다시 말하면 그 언약은 유월절 양에서(출애굽기 12:21), 선지자들의 예언에서(베드로전서 1:10), 그리고 하나님에 속한 백성들의 갈망 속에서 계속 울려온 것입니다.

요한1서 4장 14절은 이 이야기가 어디서부터 진행되어왔는지 확인해줍니다. “하나님 아버지께서 자기 아들을 세상의 구주로 보내신 것을 우리가 보았고 또 증거하였습니다”(새번역). 하나님은 어떻게 이 무너진 세상을 구하시겠다는 약속을 이루셨나요? 예수님이 죽으시고 부활하셔서 우리를 용서하시고 창조주와의 관계를 회복시켜주셨습니다. 그리고 언젠가 주님이 다시 오셔서 주님이 창조하신 우주만물을 회복시키실 것입니다.

하나님의 아들 예수님이 우리를 위해 하신 일을 기억하면서, 우리는 하나님의 은총과 구원의 위대한 절정이신 예수님을 찬양합니다.

The Great Crescendo

My parents taught me to love all sorts of music—from country to classical. So my heart beat rapidly as I walked into the Moscow Conservatory, one of Russia’s great music halls, to hear the Moscow National Symphony. As the conductor drove the musicians through a masterful Tchaikovsky piece, themes developed that gradually built to a powerful crescendo—a profound and dramatic musical climax. It was a magical moment, and the audience stood to roar its approval.

The Scriptures move toward the most powerful crescendo of history: the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the moments following Adam and Eve’s fall into sin in the garden of Eden, God promised that a Redeemer would come (GENESIS 3:15), and throughout the Old Testament that theme moved forward. The promise rang out in the Passover lamb (EXODUS 12:21), the hopes of the prophets (1 PETER 1:10), and the longings of the people of God.

First John 4:14 confirms where that story had been going: “We have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.” How? God accomplished His promised rescue of His broken world when Jesus died and rose again to forgive us and restore us to our Creator. And one day He will come again and restore His whole creation.

As we remember what God’s Son has done for us, we celebrate the great crescendo of God’s grace and rescue for us and His world—Jesus! BILL CROWDER

평화는 어디 있소?

“당신은 아직도 평화에 희망을 두고 있습니까?” 1984년에 한 기자가 밥 딜런에게 물었습니다.

“평화는 더 이상 없을 것입니다.” 딜런의 대답이었습니다. 그 대답에 비난이 쏟아졌지만 평화는 어느 때고 오기 어렵다는 현실을 부인할 수 없습니다.

그리스도께서 오시기 약 600년 전, 대부분의 선지자들이 평화를 예언했습니다. 그러나 하나님의 선지자 예레미야는 달랐습니다. 그는 백성들에게 “내 목소리를 들으라 그리하면 나는 너희 하나님이 되겠고 너희는 내 백성이 되리라”(예레미야 7:23) 는 하나님의 말씀을 상기시켜주었습니다. 그러나 백성들은 반복하여 주님과 주님의 계명을 무시했습니다. 거짓 선지자들은 “평강하다 평강하다”(8:11)고 말했지만 예레미야는 재앙을 예언했습니다. 주전 586년에 예루살렘은 함락됐습니다.

평강은 쉽게 나타나지 않습니다. 차라리 끔찍한 예언을 담은 예레미야의 책에서 끈질지게 사랑하시는 하나님을 발견합니다. 하나님은 거역하는 백성들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 영원한 사랑으로 너를 사랑하기에......내가 다시 너를 세우리니 네가 세움을 입을 것이요” (31:3-4).

하나님은 사랑과 평강의 하나님이십니다. 갈등은 우리가 하나님을 거역하기 때문에 일어납니다. 죄악은 이 세상의 평화를 파괴하고 우리 각자에게서 마음의 평화를 빼앗아버립니다. 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 것은 우리와 하나님을 화해시켜서 우리에게 내적인 평화를 주시기 위함입니다. “그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리자”라고 바울 사도는 기록했습니다(로마서 5:1). 이것은 이제까지 쓰인 글 중 가장 희망에 찬 것 중 하나입니다.

우리가 전쟁터에서 살든지 전쟁소문이 전혀 없는 평화로운 지역에서 살든지, 그리스도는 우리를 그분의 평강으로 초대하십니다.

Where Is Peace?

“Do you still hope for peace?” a journalist asked Bob Dylan in 1984.

“There is not going to be any peace,” Dylan replied. His response drew criticism, yet there’s no denying that peace remains ever elusive. About 600 years before Christ, most prophets were predicting peace. God’s prophet wasn’t one of them. Jeremiah reminded the people that God had said, “Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people” (JEREMIAH 7:23). Yet they repeatedly ignored the Lord and His commands. Their false prophets said, “Peace, peace” (8:11), but Jeremiah predicted disaster. Jerusalem fell in 586 bc .

Peace is rare. But amid Jeremiah’s book of dire prophecies we discover a God who loves relentlessly. “I have loved you with an everlasting love,” the Lord told His rebellious people. “I will build you up again” (31:3–4).

God is a God of love and peace. Conflict comes because of our rebellion against Him. Sin destroys the world’s peace and robs each of us of inner peace. Jesus came to this planet to reconcile us to God and give us that inner peace. “Since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” wrote the apostle Paul (ROMANS 5:1). His words are among the most hope-filled ever written.

Whether we live in a combat zone or dwell in a serene neighborhood with nary a whisper of war, Christ invites us into His peace. TIM GUSTAFSON

매여 있을 수 없음

멕시코 만에서 친구들과 함께 수영을 하던 케이틀린이 상어의 습격을 받았습니다. 상어가 케이틀린의 다리를 단단히 물고는 그녀의 몸을 잡아당겼습니다. 그 공격에 맞서 케이틀린은 상어의 코를 주먹으로 내리쳤습니다. 그 포식자는 다리를 물고 있던 턱을 벌리더니 졌다는 듯이 가버렸습니다. 상어에 물려 상처난 여러 곳을 100바늘도 넘게 꿰매야 했지만, 상어는 케이틀린을 끝까지 잡고 있지 못했습니다.

이 무용담을 들으면서 나는 예수님께서 사망 권세를 일격으로 멸하심으로써 그 권세가 더 이상 주님을 따르는 자들을 겁주고 굴복시키지 못하게 한 사실을 떠올렸습니다. 베드로는 “이는 [예수님이] 사망에 매여 있을 수 없었음이라”(사도행전 2:24)고 하였습니다.

베드로는 예루살렘의 군중 앞에서 이 말을 했습니다. 아마도 그 군중들은 “그를 십자가에 못 박으시오”(마태복음 27:22, 새번역)라고 소리치며 예수님을 정죄했던 그 사람들이었을 것입니다. 그들의 말대로 로마 병사들은 예수님을 십자가에 못 박고, 예수님의 죽음을 확인할 때까지 주님을 십자가에 매달아두었습니다. 예수님의 몸은 무덤으로 옮겨져
하나님이 주님을 부활시키실 때까지 사흘간 그곳에 머물렀습니다. 예수님이 부활하신 후 베드로는 다른 사도들과 같이 예수님과 이야기도 나누고 식사도 함께 했습니다. 그리고 40일 후 예수님은 그들이 지켜보는 가운데 하늘로 올라가셨습니다(사도행전 1:9).

예수님은 지상에서 육체적 고통과 정신적 고뇌 가운데 돌아가셨지만 하나님의 권능은 무덤을 이기셨습니다. 이 때문에 죽음이나 그 어떤 고난도 우리를 영원히 붙잡아둘 수 없게 되었습니다. 언젠가 믿는 자들은 모두 하나님의 임재 앞에 영생과 온전함을 경험하게 될 것입니다. 부활의 미래에 초점을 맞추면 오늘 이 시간 자유를 누리는데 도움이 됩니다.

Impossible to Hold

Swimming with friends in the Gulf of Mexico, Caitlyn encountered a shark, which grabbed her legs and pulled at her body. To counter the attack, Caitlyn punched the shark in the nose. The predator unclenched its jaws and swam away in defeat. Although its bite caused multiple wounds, which required over 100 stitches, the shark was unable to keep Caitlyn in its grasp.

This story reminds me of the fact that Jesus delivered a blow to death, ending its power to intimidate and defeat His followers. According to Peter, “It was impossible for death to keep its hold on [Jesus]” (ACTS 2:24).

Peter said these words to a crowd in Jerusalem. Perhaps many of them had been the ones yelling out, “Crucify him!” to condemn Jesus (MATTHEW 27:22). As a result, Roman soldiers fastened Him to a cross where He hung until they confirmed He was dead. Jesus’s body was carried to a tomb where it stayed for three days until God resurrected Him. After His resurrection, Peter and others spoke and ate with Him, and after forty days they watched Him ascend into heaven (ACTS 1:9).

Jesus’s life on Earth ended amidst physical suffering and mental anguish, yet God’s power defeated the grave. Because of this, death—or any other struggle—lacks the ability to keep us in its grip forever. One day all believers will experience everlasting life and wholeness in God’s presence. 좁은 길을 선택하기

콜로라도의 아름다운 가을 산을 배경으로 한 청년이 말 위에 앉아 어느 길로 갈까 곰곰이 생각하고 있는 사진이 있습니다. 이 사진을 보면 로버트 프로스트의 시 “가지 않은 길”이 생각납니다. 그 시에서 프로스트는 자기 앞에 놓여 있는 두 갈래 길을 놓고 깊은 생각에 잠깁니다. 두 길이 모두 좋아 보이는데 다시 이곳에 되돌아올 것 같지 않아 하나를 선택해야 합니다. 프로스트는 이렇게 썼습니다. “숲속에 두 갈래의 길이 있었다. 나는 사람이 적게 다닌 길을 택하였다. 그리고 그것 때문에 모든 것이 달라졌다.”

예수님은 산상수훈(마태복음 5-7장)에서 주님의 말씀을 듣는 자들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “좁은 문으로 들어가라 멸망으로 인도하는 문은 크고 그 길이 넓어 그리로 들어가는 자가 많고 생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 자가 적음이라” (7:13-14).

우리는 인생 여정에서 가야 할 길을 놓고 많은 선택을 해야 합니다. 전도가 밝고 매력적으로 보이는 길은 많지만 생명의 길은 오직 하나 뿐입니다. 예수님은 우리에게 제자됨의 길과 하나님 말씀에 순종하는 길, 즉 대다수의 사람을 따라가지 말고 주님을 따르라고 부르십니다.

앞으로 가야 할 길에 대해 깊이 생각하고 있는 우리에게 하나님께서 생명의 길인 주님의 길을 따르도록 지혜와 용기를 주시기를 바랍니다. 그럴 때 우리와 우리가 사랑하는 사람들의 모든 것이 달라질 것입니다!

Choosing the Trail

I have a beautiful autumn photograph of a young man on horseback in the Colorado mountains as he contemplates which trail ahead to follow. It reminds me of Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken.” In it, Frost ponders two pathways that lie before him. Both are equally inviting, but he doubts he will return to this place again, and he must choose one. Frost wrote, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

In Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount (MATTHEW 5–7), the Lord told His listeners, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it” (7:13–14).

On our journey through life, we face many choices about which road to travel. Many pathways seem promising and attractive but only one is the pathway of life. Jesus calls us to travel the road of discipleship and obedience to God’s Word—to follow Him instead of the crowd.

As we ponder the road ahead, may God give us wisdom and courage to follow His way—the road of life. It will make all the difference for us and those we love! DAVID C. MCCASLAND

호박 속에 담겨있는 보배

젊은 엄마인 나는 딸이 태어난 첫 해를 기록해서 남기기로 작정했습니다. 매달 딸아이가 자라면서 변해가는 모습을 보여주려고 사진을 찍었습니다. 내가 좋아하는 기록 중에 딸아이가 근처 농장에서 구입한 속이 빈 큰 호박 속에 웃으며 앉아 있는 사진이 있습니다. 내 마음의 보배인 딸아이가 커다란 호박 속에 담겨있는 것이지요. 몇 주 후에 호박은 시들어버렸지만 내 딸은 계속 자라나 성장해 갔습니다.

바울이 고백한 예수님이 누구신지 그 참 뜻을 알아가는 과정을 보면서 문득 그 호박 속에 담겨있는 보배 같은 내 딸 아기 사진이 생각납니다. 바울은 우리 마음속에 담은 예수님을 질그릇에 담긴 보배에 비유하고 있습니다. 예수님이 우리를 위해 하신 일을 기억하면 “사방으로 우겨쌈을 당하여도” (고린도후서 4:8) 어려움을 견디어 나갈 힘과 용기를 얻습니다. 우리의 삶에서 역사하고 계시는 하나님의 능력 때문에 우리는 “거꾸러뜨림을 당하여도 망하지 아니하고” 오히려 예수님의 삶을 드러낼 수 있는 것입니다(9절).

시들어버린 호박처럼 우리도 갖가지 시련으로 지치고 힘들 수 있습니다. 그러나 예수님과 함께 하는 우리의 기쁨은 그와 같은 시련에도 불구하고 계속 커나갈 뿐입니다. 우리가 아는 주님은 우리 삶 속에서 역사하시는 그분의 능력과 함께 깨지기 쉬운 질그릇 같은 우리 몸 속에 담겨있는 보배입니다. 우리는 고난에 당면해서도 우리 안에서 역사하시는 주님의 능력으로 헤쳐 나갈 수 있습니다.

Treasure in a Pumpkin

As a young mother, I was determined to document my daughter’s first year of life. Each month, I took photos of her to illustrate how she had changed and grown. In one of my favorite pictures, she is gleefully sitting in the belly of a hollowed-out pumpkin I purchased from a local farmer. There she sat, the delight of my heart, contained in an overgrown squash. The pumpkin withered in the ensuing weeks, but my daughter continued to grow and thrive.

The way Paul describes knowing the truth of who Jesus is reminds me of that photo. He likens the knowledge of Jesus in our heart to a treasure stored in a clay pot. Remembering what Jesus did for us gives us the courage and strength to persevere through struggles in spite of being “hard pressed on every side” (2 CORINTHIANS 4:8). Because of God’s power in our lives, when we are “struck down, but not destroyed,” we reveal the life of Jesus (V. 9).

Like the pumpkin that withered, we may feel the wear and tear of our trials. But the joy of Jesus in us can continue to grow in spite of those challenges. Our knowledge of Him—His power at work in our lives—is the treasure stored in our frail clay bodies. We can flourish in the face of hardship because of His power at work within us. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

나의 민낯

과거에 경건하게 살지 못했다는 부끄러움과 자책감이 오랫동안 나의 인생전반에 부정적인 영향을 미쳤습니다. 남들이 나에 대한 좋지 않은 평판을 듣게 되면 어쩌나? 그렇지만 하나님이 내게 용기를 주셔서 교회 지도자 한 분을 점심식사에 초대했는데, 나는 완벽하게 보이려고 무척 애를 썼습니다. 집안을 얼룩 한 점 없이 닦고, 서둘러 세 코스로 된 식사를 준비하고, 옷장에서 가장 좋은 청바지와 블라우스로 차려 입었습니다.

하지만 앞마당에 있는 스프링클러를 잠그려고 서두르다가, 꼭지를 비트는 순간 물이 쏟아져 나와 흠뻑 젖게 되는 바람에 그만 비명을 지르고 말았습니다. 수건으로 머리를 대충 말리고 얼룩진 화장을 한 채로 운동복 바지와 티셔츠로 갈아입었는데, 바로 그때 초인종이 울렸습니다. 할 수 없이 나는 그 아침의 웃기는 차림새와 그렇게 된 연유를 다 털어놓았습니다. 그러자 나의 새 친구는 지난 실패로 말미암은 죄책감으로 인한 두려움과 불안감을 지우려 애썼던 자신의 경험담을 들려주었습니다. 함께 기도한 후에 그녀는 자기가 속해 있는 하나님의 불완전한 종들이라는 모임에 나를 초대해주었습니다.

바울 사도는 그리스도 안에서의 새로운 삶을 받아들이면서 자신의 과거를 부인하지 않았고 그런 과거 때문에 주님 섬기는 일을 멈추지도 않았습니다(디모데전서 1:12-14). 바울은 예수님의 십자가사역으로 가장 흉악한 죄수였던 자신이 구원받고 변화되었다는 사실을 알았기 때문에, 하나님을 찬양하며 사람들에게 주님을 높이고 주님께 순종하도록 권면할 수 있었습니다(15-17절).

하나님의 은혜와 용서를 받아들이면 우리는 과거로부터 자유롭게 됩니다. 흠이 있지만 뜨겁게 사랑받는 우리가 하나님이 주신 재능으로 다른 이들을 섬길 때 우리의 민낯을 전혀 부끄러워할 이유가 없습니다.

My Real Face

For years, feelings of unworthiness and shame over my lessthan-godly past had an adverse impact on every aspect of my life. What if others discovered the extent of my blemished reputation? Though God helped me muster up courage to invite a ministry leader to lunch, I strived to seem perfect. I scrubbed my house spotless, whipped up a three-course meal, and donned my best jeans and blouse.

I rushed to turn off the front-yard sprinklers. Twisting the leaking nozzle, I screamed when a gush of water drenched me. With towel-dried hair and smeared makeup, I changed into dry sweat pants and a T-shirt . . . just in time to hear the doorbell. Frustrated, I confessed my morning’s antics and motives. My new friend shared her own battles with fear and insecurity stemming from guilt over past failings. After we prayed, she welcomed me to her team of God’s imperfect servants.

The apostle Paul accepted his new life in Christ, refusing to deny his past or let it stop him from serving the Lord (1 TIMOTHY 1:12 –14). Because Paul knew Jesus’s work on the cross saved and changed him—the worst of sinners—he praised God and encouraged others to honor and obey Him (VV. 15–17).

When we accept God’s grace and forgiveness, we’re freed from our past. Flawed but fiercely loved, we have no reason to be ashamed of our real faces as we serve others with our God-given gifts. XOCHITL DIXON

언제나 받아들여짐

공부를 따라가느라 몇 년 동안 힘들었던 앤지는 마침내 일류 초등학교를 떠나 ‘보통’ 학교로 전학을 갔습니다. 경쟁이 치열한 싱가포르의 교육환경에서는 누구나 ‘좋은’ 학교에 다니는 것이 장래를 밝게 해줄 수 있다고 생각하는데, 스스로 보통학교로 옮겨간다면 잘못된 선택이라고 할지도 모릅니다.

그래서 앤지의 부모는 실망했고 처음엔 앤지 자신도 마치 강등당한 것처럼 느꼈습니다. 하지만 새 학교를 다닌 지 얼마 되지 않아 아홉 살 난 이 소녀는 평균적인 수준의 학생들과 한 반에 공부한다는 것이 무슨 의미인지 알게 되었습니다. 아이가 말했습니다. “엄마, 내가 있어야 할 곳은 여기예요. 드디어 내가 받아들여졌어요!”

이 이야기를 들으면서 나는 예수님이 세리 삭개오의 집에 머무르겠다고 하셨을 때 그가 느꼈던 기쁨을 생각했습니다(누가복음 19:5). 예수님은 스스로 결함이 있어서 하나님의 은혜를 받을 자격이 없다고 생각하는 사람들과 함께 식사하는 것을 좋아하셨습니다(10절). 우리의 있는 모습 그대로 우리를 찾으시고 사랑하신 예수님은 주님의 죽음과 부활을 통해 우리를 완전하게 해주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 우리는 오직 주님의 은혜만으로 완전해질 수 있습니다.

내 삶이 하나님의 기준에 전혀 미치지 못한다는 것을 알고 있기에, 나는 종종 내 영적 여정을 끊임없는 투쟁이라고 생각했습니다. 그러나 성령님이 우리를 예수님처럼 빚어가는 일을 하고 계시기 때문에 우리가 언제나 받아들여진다는 것을 알고 얼마나 위로가 되는지 모릅니다!

Always Accepted

After several years of struggling to keep up in her studies, Angie was finally taken out of her elite primary school and transferred to a “normal” one. In Singapore’s intensely competitive education landscape, where being in a “good” school can improve one’s future prospects, many would see this as a failure.

Angie’s parents were disappointed, and Angie herself felt as if she had been demoted. But soon after joining her new school, the nine year old realized what it meant to be in a class of average students. “Mummy, I belong here,” she said. “I’m finally accepted!”

It reminded me of how excited Zacchaeus must have felt when Jesus invited Himself to the tax collector’s home (LUKE 19:5). Christ was interested in dining with those who knew they were flawed and didn’t deserve God’s grace (V. 10). Having found us—and loved us—as we were, Jesus gives us the promise of perfection through His death and resurrection. We are made perfect through His grace alone.

I’ve often found my spiritual journey to be one of constant struggle, knowing that my life falls far short of God’s ideal. How comforting it is to know that we are always
accepted, for the Holy Spirit is in the business of molding us to be like Jesus. LESLIE KOH

당신의 보트를 가지고 나오라

2017년에 허리케인 하비가 텍사스 동부 지역에 큰 재앙의 홍수를 몰고 왔습니다. 엄청나게 쏟아지는 비 때문에 수천 명의 사람들이 홍수를 피하지 못하고 집에 갇혀 있었습니다. “텍사스 해군”이라는 별명이 붙여진 많은 시민들이 텍사스 주를 비롯한 미국 각 지역에서 보트를 가져와 고립된 주민들을 구출했습니다.

이처럼 관대하고 용감한 시민들의 행동을 보면서 우리가 도울 수 있을 때 다른 사람들을 도우라는 잠언 3장 27절 말씀이 생각납니다. 그들은 배를 가지고 와서 어려움에 처한 사람들을 도와줄 능력이 있었고, 실제로 그렇게 했습니다. 그들의 행동은 다른 사람들을 위해 자신이 가지고 있는 어떤 자원이라도 기꺼이 사용하겠다는 의지를 보여줍니다.

우리는 막상 닥친 일을 스스로 해결하기 어렵다고 느낄 수도 있습니다. 때로는 다른 사람들을 도와주기 위해 필요한 기술이나 경험, 자원, 혹은 시간이 없다는 생각에 그냥 무력해지기도 합니다. 그럴 경우, 우리는 다른 사람에게 도움을 줄 수 있는 우리 능력을 과소평가하면서 우리 스스로 쉽게 방관자가 되어버립니다. 그 ‘텍사스 해군’은 홍수의 범람을 막을 수 없었고, 정부의 구호 법안을 제정할 수도 없었습니다. 하지만 그들은 자신의 능력 범위 안에서, 즉 그들의 보트를 가지고 사람들의 위급 상황에 도움을 주려고 온 것입니다. 우리도, 그것이 무엇이든지 우리의 “보트”를 사용하여 우리가 만나는 사람들을 도와 그들을 더 높은 안전한 곳으로 이끌 수 있기를 소원합니다.

Bring Your Boats

Hurricane Harvey brought catastrophic flooding to eastern Texas in 2017. The onslaught of rain stranded thousands of people in their homes, unable to escape the floodwaters. In what was dubbed the “Texas Navy,” many private citizens brought boats from other parts of the state and nation to help evacuate stranded people.

The actions of these valiant, generous men and women call to mind the encouragement of Proverbs 3:27, which instructs us to help others whenever we are able. They had the power to act on behalf of those in need by bringing their boats. And so they did . Their actions demonstrate a willingness to use whatever resources they had at their disposal for the benefit of others.

We may not always feel adequate for the task at hand; often we become paralyzed by thinking we don’t have the skills, experience, resources, or time to help others. In such instances, we’re quick to sideline ourselves, discounting what we do have that might be of assistance to someone else. The Texas Navy couldn’t stop the floodwaters from rising, nor could they legislate government aid. But they used what they had within their power—their boats—to come alongside the deep needs of their fellow man. May we all bring our “boats”—whatever they may be—to take the people in our paths to higher ground. KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

가시에 찔리는 아픔

가시에 찔리자 내 검지에서 피가 났습니다. 나는 소리를 지르고 아파서 신음하며 본능적으로 손을 뒤로 뺐습니다. 그렇지만 예상했어야 할 일이었습니다. 원예용 장갑도 없이 가시덤불을 정리할 땐 이런 일이 꼭 생기기 마련이니까요.

손가락에 난 상처는 욱신거렸고 피가 흐르고 있어서 뭔가 조치를 취해야 했습니다. 그래서 반창고를 찾던 중 나도 모르게 주님을 떠올리게 되었습니다. 무엇보다도, 군인들이 예수님께 강제로 가시로 된 관을 씌웠습니다(요한복음 19:1-3). 겨우 가시 하나만으로도 이렇게 아픈데 가시면류관은 얼마나 고통스러웠을까 생각했습니다. 사실 그것은 주님이 당하신 고통 중 극히 작은 아픔에 지나지 않습니다. 등에는 채찍을 맞으셨고, 손목과 발목은 못에 박혔으며, 옆구리는 창으로 찔렸습니다.

게다가 주님은 정신적 고통도 감내하셨습니다. 이사야 53장 5절은 “그가 찔림은 우리의 허물 때문이요 그가 상함은 우리의 죄악 때문이라 그가 징계를 받으므로 우리는 평화를 누리고”라고 말합니다. 여기서 이사야가 말하는 “평화”란 용서의 다른 표현입니다. 예수님은 우리에게 하나님과의 영적 평화를 주시려고 칼로, 못으로, 그리고 가시면류관으로
찔리는 고통을 감내하셨습니다. 우리를 위해 목숨을 저버린 주님의 희생이 우리와 하나님과의 관계를 회복시키는 길을 깔아주었습니다. 성경은 주님이 나를 위해, 그리고 당신을 위해 그렇게 하셨다고 말합니다.

A Piercing Thorn

The thorn pricked my index finger, drawing blood. I hollered and then groaned, drawing back my hand instinctively. But I shouldn’t have been surprised: trying to prune a thorny bush without gardening gloves was a recipe for exactly what just happened.

The pain throbbing in my finger—and the blood flowing from it—demanded attention. And as I searched for a bandage, I found myself unexpectedly thinking about my Savior. After all, soldiers forced Jesus to don an entire crown of thorns (JOHN 19:1–3). If one thorn hurt this much, I thought, how much agony would an entire crown of them inflict? And that’s just a small portion of the physical pain He suffered. A whip flogged His back. Nails penetrated His wrists and ankles. A spear pierced His side.

But Jesus endured spiritual pain too. Verse 5 of Isaiah 53 tells us, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him.” The “peace” Isaiah talks about here is another way of talking about forgiveness. Jesus allowed Himself to be pierced—by a sword, by nails, by a crown of thorns—to bring us spiritual peace with God. His sacrifice, His willingness to die on our behalf, paved the way to make a relationship with the Father possible. And He did it, Scripture tells us, for me, for you. ADAM HOLZ

기도와 전기톱사용

글래디 이모님의 몸 사리지 않는 기백을 언제나 존경하지만 가끔은 그 용기가 걱정스러울 때도 있습니다. 이모님이 보내온 이메일을 열어보니 “내가 어제 호두나무를 잘라버렸어.”라는 걱정스러운 소식이 있었습니다.

미리 말해두자면 전기톱을 휘둘러 큰 나무를 벤 이모님은 무려 일흔여섯 살이시지요! 이모 댁 차고 뒤에 있던 나무였는데, 그 뿌리가 콘크리트를 뚫고 뻗어나갈 정도로 자라자, 이모님은 그 나무를 베어버린 것입니다. 하지만 이모님은 우리에게 “나는 그런 일을 하기 전에 항상 기도를 드린다.”라고 말씀하셨었지요.

이 스 라 엘 백 성 들 이 페르시아에 포로로 잡혀갔었을 당시 페르시아 왕의 술관원이었던 느헤미야는 예루살렘으로 돌아간 사람들에 관한 소식을 들었습니다. 무슨 일인가 해야만 했습니다. “예루살렘 성벽은 허물어지고, 성문들은 다 불에 탔습니다”(느헤미야 1:3). 무너진 성벽으로는 적의 공격에 속수무책입니다. 느헤미야는 동족인 이스라엘 백성들을 연민하는 마음에서 나서게 되었습니다. 그러나 느헤미야는 먼저 기도를 드렸습니다. 새로 등극한 페르시아 왕이 예루살렘의 재건을 중지하라는 명령을 내렸기 때문입니다(에스라 4장 참조). 느헤미야는 그의 백성을 위해 기도한 다음(느헤미야 1:5-10), 왕에게 떠나는 허가를 요청하기 전에 하나님께 도움을 구했습니다(11절).

당신은 먼저 기도부터 하십니까? 기도는 삶에서 어떤 일이나 시련에 부딪칠 때 언제나 가장 좋은 방법입니다.

The Prayer and the Chain Saw

I respect my Aunt Gladys’s intrepid spirit, even if that very spirit concerns me sometimes. The source of my concern came in the form of news she shared in an email: “I cut down a walnut tree yesterday.”

You must understand that my chainsaw-wielding aunt is seventy-six years old! The tree had grown up behind her garage. When the roots threatened to burst through the concrete, she knew it had to go. But she did tell us, “I always pray before I tackle a job like that.”

While serving as butler to the king of Persia during the time of Israel’s exile, Nehemiah heard news concerning the people who had returned to Jerusalem. Some work needed to be done. “The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire” (NEHEMIAH 1:3). The broken walls left them vulnerable to attack by enemies. Nehemiah had compassion for his people and wanted to get involved. But prayer came first, especially since a new king had written a letter to stop the building efforts in Jerusalem (see Ezra 4). Nehemiah prayed for his people (NEHEMIAH 1:5–10), and then asked God for help before requesting permission from the king to leave (V. 11).
