따뜻하게 맞이하시는 하나님

우리 교회는 한 오래된 초등학교를 예배당으로 쓰고 있습니다. 이 학교는 1958년 미국 법원의 통합 명령(이전에 백인 생들만 다니던 학교에 흑인 학생들도 받아들이라는 법령) 에 따르느니 그대로 문을 닫아버렸습니다. 이듬해 그 학교가 다시 문을 열었을 때 백인 사회로 밀려들어간 흑인 학생들 중 하나가 바로 지금 우리 교회 교인인 엘바입니다. 엘바는 그 때 일을 이렇게 회상합니다. “늘 우리와 함께했던 선생님들이 있는 안전한 공동체를 떠나 다른 흑인 학생이라곤 단 한 명밖에 없는 교실, 그런 무서운 환경 속에 배치되었어요.” 엘바는 단지 다르다는 이유로 힘든 시간을 보냈지만, 용기와 믿음과 용서를 지닌 여성으로 변해갔습니다.

그녀의 간증은 의미심장합니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 인종이나 타고난 자질에 상관없이 모든 인간들을 사랑하신다는 진리를 거부한 사회의 구성원들이 저질렀던 온갖 악행들을 견뎌냈기 때문입니다. 초대교회의 일부 교인들도 똑같은 문제로 힘들어했습니다. 하나님께서 어떤 사람들은 태어날 때부터 사랑하고 다른 사람들은 사랑하지 않는다고 잘못 믿었기 때문이었습니다. 그러나 베드로는 하나님이 보여주시는 환상을 본 다음 아래와 같은 놀라운 계시로 듣는 이들을 깜짝 놀라게 하였습니다. “내가 참으로 하나님은 사람의 외모를 보지 아니하시고 각 나라 중 하나님을 경외하며 의를 행하는 사람은 다 받으시는 줄 깨달았도다”(사도행전 10:34-35).

하나님은 팔을 넓게 벌리시고 모든 사람들에게 사랑을 베푸십니다. 우리도 하나님의 능력으로 그렇게 할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Our Welcoming God

Our church meets in an old elementary school, one that closed in 1958 rather than obey a US court order to integrate (the act of having African-American students attend schools previously attended by only Caucasian students). The following year, the school reopened and Elva, now a member of our church, was one of those black students who were thrust into a white world. “I was taken out of my safe community, with teachers who were part of our life,” Elva recalls, “and placed in a scary environment in a class with only one other black student.” Elva suffered because she was different, but she became a woman of courage, faith, and forgiveness.

Her witness is profound because of how much evil she endured at the hands of some members of a society that denied the truth that every human being, regardless of race or heritage, is loved by God. Some members of the early church struggled with this same truth, believing that certain people were, by birth, loved by God while others were rejected. After receiving a divine vision, however, Peter stunned everyone who would listen with this astounding revelation: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right” (ACTS 10:34–35).

God opens His arms wide to extend love to everyone. May we do the same in His power. - WINN COLLIER

구주 되신 예수님

작년에 친구들과 함께 암으로 투병 중인 여성 세 분의 치유를 위해 기도했었습니다. 치유의 능력을 지니신 하나님이심을 알고 우리는 치유를 위해 하나님께 매일 기도했습니다. 과거에 하나님이 그렇게 역사하시는 것을 보았기에 다시 그렇게 해주실 것을 믿었습니다. 그들이 투병 중에 치유가 일어나는 것 같이 보였던 때가 있어 우리는 기뻐했지만, 작년 가을에 그들 모두 세상을 떠나고 말았습니다. 그 죽음이 “궁극적인 치유”라고 말하는 사람들도 있었는데, 어떤 면에서는 맞는 말이었습니다. 그래도 그들의 죽음은 우리에게 큰 상처를 남겼습니다. 우리는 하나님께서 바로 이 땅에서 그들 모두를 고쳐주시기를 바랐습니다. 그러나 그 이유를 알 수 없지만 아무런 기적도 일어나지 않았습니다.

사람들은 예수님이 행하시는 기적 때문에, 그리고 그들의 필요를 채우기 위해 예수님을 따랐습니다 (요한복음 6:2,26). 어떤 사람들은 예수님을 그저 목수의 아들로만 생각했고 (마태복음 13:55-58), 어떤 사람들은 예수님이 그들의 정치적 지도자가 되기를 바랐습니다(누가복음 19:37-38). 또한 예수님을 위대한 선생으로 생각한 사람들이 있었는가 하면(마태복음 7:28-29), 예수님의 가르침을 이해하기 힘들어 떠난 사람들도 있었습니다(요한복음 6:66).

예수님은 우리가 주님께 기대하는 것들을 언제나 충족시켜 주시지는 않습니다. 그렇지만 주님은 우리가 상상할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 더 크신 분이십니다. 우리에게 영생을 주시는 분이시며(47-48절), 선하시고 지혜로우시며, 우리를 사랑하시고 용서하시고 가까이 계시며 평안을 주십니다. 그런 예수님 안에서 우리 모두 쉼을 얻고 그분을 계속 따를 수 있기를 소원합니다.

What Kind of Savior Is He?

Last year, friends and I prayed for healing for three women battling cancer. We knew God had the power to do this, and we asked Him to do so every day. We’d seen Him work in the past and believed He could do it again. There were days in each one’s battle where healing looked like it was a reality, and we rejoiced. But they all died that fall. Some said that was “the ultimate healing,” and in a way it was. Still the loss hurt us deeply. We wanted Him to heal them all—here and now—but for reasons we couldn’t understand, no miracle came.

Some people followed Jesus for the miracles He performed and to get their needs met (JOHN 6:2, 26). Some simply saw Him as the carpenter’s son (MATTHEW 13:55–58), and others expected Him to be their political leader (LUKE 19:37–38). Some thought of Him as a great teacher (MATTHEW 7:28–29), while others quit following Him because His teaching was hard to understand (JOHN 6:66).

Jesus still doesn’t always meet our expectations of Him. Yet He is so much more than we can imagine. He’s the provider of eternal life (VV 47–48). He is good and wise; and He loves, forgives, stays close, and brings us comfort. May we find rest in Jesus as He is and keep following Him. - ANNE CETAS

염려의 대안

법도 잘 지키고 정직하기도 한 사람이 다음과 같은 음성 메시지를 받았습니다. “여기는 경찰서에 근무하는 아무개 경찰관입니다. 이 번호로 저에게 전화 주시기 바랍니다.” 그러자 바로 그 사람은 자신이 무슨 잘못을 했나 두려워하며 염려하기 시작했습니다. 그는 경찰에 전화하기가 겁이 났으며, 심지어 자신이 어떤 곤경에 빠져 있는 것은 아닌가 하는 걱정이 앞서 여러 가지 상상으로 밤잠을 설치기까지 했습니다. 더 이상 경찰로부터 전화는 없었지만 걱정이
사라지는 데에는 몇 주가 지나야 했습니다.

예수님은 염려에 대해 흥미로운 질문을 하셨습니다. “너희 중에 누가 염려함으로 그 키를 한 자라도 더할 수 있겠느냐”(마태복음 6:27). 이 질문은 우리의 걱정하는 성향을 다시 생각해보는데 도움이 되는데, 그것은 염려가 우리가 닥친 상황에 아무런 도움이 되지 않는다는 것을 일깨워주기 때문입니다.

우리에게 문제가 닥쳤을 때, 다음 두 단계 조치를 취해볼 수 있습니다. 먼저는 행동을 취하는 것이고, 다음은 하나님께 맡기는 것입니다. 문제를 피할 수 있는 방법이 있다면 일단 그렇게 하십시오. 우리는 어떤 행동을 취해야 할지 하나님께 기도할 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 할 수 있는 것이 아무것도 없을 때, 하나님은 결코 우리와 같은 곤경에 빠지지 않는 분이라는 것을 알면 위로를 얻을 수 있습니다. 하나님은 언제나 우리 편이기에, 언제든 우리의 상황을 하나님께 믿고 맡길 수 있습니다.

걱정해야 할 것 같이 느껴질 때 다윗 왕이 주는 격려의 말을 의지할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 그는 자신이 실제로 체험한 어려움과 염려에 직면했을 때 결론적으로 이렇게 말했습니다. “네 짐을 여호와께 맡기라 그가 너를 붙드시라”(시편 55:22). 염려의 대안으로 정말 놀랍지 않은지요!

An Alternative to Worry

A law-abiding, honest man received a voicemail that said, “This is officer _________ from the police department. Please call me at this number.” Immediately the man began to worry—afraid that somehow he had done something wrong. He was afraid to return the call, and he even spent sleepless nights running through possible scenarios—worried that he was in some kind of trouble. The officer never called back, but it took weeks for the worry to go away.

Jesus asked an interesting question about worry: “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (MATTHEW 6:27). Perhaps this can help us rethink our tendency to worry, because it suggests that it doesn’t help the situation we’re concerned about.

When problems are on the horizon for us, maybe we can try the following two-step approach: Take action and trust in God. If we can do something to avoid the problem, let’s try that route. We can pray for God to guide us to an action we should take. But if there’s nothing we can do, we can take comfort in knowing that God never finds Himself in such a predicament. He can always act on our behalf. We can always turn our situation over to Him in trust and confidence.

When it feels like time to worry, may we turn to the inspired words of King David, who faced his own share of difficulties and worries, but concluded: “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you” (PSALM 55:22). What a great alternative to worry! - DAVE BRANON

보통 사람

윌리엄 캐리는 영국 노샘프턴 근교의 한 가난한 가정에서 태어난 허약한 소년이었습니다. 그의 장래도 그리 밝아 보이지 않았습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그를 위한 계획을 따로 가지고 계셨습니다. 그는 온갖 악조건을 극복하고 인도로 가서 놀라운 사회개혁을 일으켰으며 성경을 여러 인도 방언으로 번역했습니다. 또한 그는 하나님과 사람들을 사랑했으며 하나님을 위해 많은 업적을 남겼습니다.

이새의 아들 다윗은 식구 중에서 가장 어린 보통 소년이었습니다. 겉보기에 베들레헴 언덕에서 양을 치는 한 아이에 지나지 않았지만(사무엘상 1 6 : 1 1 - 12), 하나님은 그의 마음을 보시고 그를 위한 계획을 세우셨습니다. 그 무렵 사울 왕은 불순종으로 하나님에게 버림받은 상태에 있었습니다. 사울의 행동에 대해 사무엘 선지자가 애석해 하고 있을 때, 하나님은 사무엘을 부르셔서 이새의 아들 중 하나에게 기름 부어 새 왕으로 세우라고 하셨습니다.

용모가 빼어나고 키가 큰 엘리압을 보자 사무엘은 바로 이런 생각이 들었습니다. “여호와의 기름 부으실 자가 과연 주님 앞에 있도다” (6절). 그러나 왕을 선택하는 하나님의 전략은 사무엘의 생각과 아주 달랐습니다. 사실, 하나님은 이새의 다른 아들을 다 안 된다 하시고 막내아들을 택하신 것입니다. 다윗을 왕으로 택하신 것은 하나님의 입장에서도 분명히 전략적인 조치가 아니었습니다. 아니, 언뜻 보아 그래 보였습니다. 도대체 어린 목동이 나라는 고사하고, 그의 마을을 위해 무슨 일을 할 수 있다는 말입니까? 주님께서 우리 마음을 아시고 우리에 대한 계획을 갖고 계신다는 것을 알게 될 때 얼마나 위안이 되는지 모릅니다.

An Ordinary Man

William Carey was a sickly boy, born to a humble family near Northampton, England. His future didn’t look too bright. But God had plans for him. Against all odds, he moved to India, where he brought incredible social reforms and translated the Bible into several Indian languages. He loved God and people, and accomplished many things for God.

David, son of Jesse, was an ordinary young man, the youngest in his family. He was seemingly an insignificant shepherd on the hills of Bethlehem (1 SAMUEL 16:11–12). Yet God saw David’s heart and had a plan for him. King Saul had been rejected by God for disobedience. While the prophet Samuel mourned Saul’s choices, God called Samuel to anoint a different king, one of Jesse’s sons.

When Samuel saw the handsome, tall Eliab, he naturally thought, “surely the LORD ’s anointed stands here before the Lord ” (V 6). However, God’s strategy to select a king was much different than Samuel’s. In fact, God said no to each of Jesse’s sons, except the youngest one. Selecting David as king was definitely not a strategic move from God’s part, or so it seemed at first glance. What would a young shepherd have to offer his community, let alone his country?

더 위대한 영광

시저 아우구스투스는 로마제국의 최초의 황제이자 가장 위대한 황제로 기억되고 있습니다. 정치적 수완과 군사력으로 그의 정적들을 물리치고 제국을 확장하였으며, 이곳저곳 잡동사니로 뒤덮여 허물어진 로마를 대리석 동상과 신전들로 이루어진 도시로 일으켜 세웠습니다. 로마 시민들은 아우구스투스를 숭배하여 그를 신적인 아버지요 인류의 구원자로 칭송했습니다. 40년의 통치기간이 끝날 무렵 그가 공식적으로 한 마지막 말은 “내가 처음 봤을 때 로마는 진흙의 도시였지만, 이제 대리석의 도시가 되었다.”였습니다. 하지만 그의 아내에 따르면 실제 그의 마지막 말은 “인생이라는 연극에서 내 역할을 잘 수행한 것 같지 않소? 그렇다면 내가 퇴장할 때 박수나 쳐주시오.”였다고 합니다.

아우구스투스가 알지 못했던 사실이 하나 있었는데, 그것은 그에게 더 큰 이야기에서 조연 역할이 주어져 있었다는 것입니다. 그의 통치하에서 한 목수의 아들이 태어나 로마군대의 그 어떤 승리나 신전, 경기장, 궁전보다 훨씬 더 위대한 무엇을 드러내 보여주었습니다(누가복음 2:1).

이것은 굉장한 이야기입니다. 우리는 하나님 앞에서 헛된 꿈을 좇으며 서로 싸우는 모습을 보였지만, 하나님은 우리가 함께 오래된 험한 십자가를 찬양하게 하셨습니다.

The Greater Glory

Caesar Augustus is remembered as the first and greatest of the Roman emperors. By political skill and military power he eliminated his enemies, expanded the empire, and lifted Rome from the clutter of rundown neighbor-hoods into a city of marble statues and temples. Adoring Roman citizens referred to Augustus as the divine father and savior of the human race. As his forty-year reign came to an end, his official last words were, “I found Rome a city of clay but left it a city of marble.” According to his wife, however, his last words were actually, “Have I played the part well? Then applaud as I exit.”

What Augustus didn’t know is that he’d been given a supporting role in a bigger story. In the shadow of his reign, the son of a carpenter was born to reveal something far greater than any Roman military victory, temple, stadium, or palace (LUKE 2:1).

But who could have understood the glory Jesus prayed for on the night His countrymen demanded His crucifixion by Roman executioners? (JOHN 17:4–5). Who could have foreseen the hidden wonder of a sacrifice that would be forever applauded in heaven and earth?

It’s quite a story. Our God found us chasing foolish dreams and fighting among ourselves. He left us singing together about an old rugged cross. - MART DEHAAN

변화 받고 변화시키기

나이지리아에서 자란 태니와 모두페는 1970년대에 영국으로 유학길에 올랐습니다. 하나님의 은혜로 인격적으로 변화된 그들은 자신들이 영국에서 가장 궁핍하고 격리된 지역인리버풀의 안필드를 변화시키는 일에 쓰임 받게 되리라고는 전혀 상상하지 못했습니다. 태니 오미데이와 모두페 오미데이 박사부부가 신실하게 하나님을 찾으며 그들의 공동체를 섬기자 하나님께서 많은 사람들에게 소망을 회복시켜주셨습니다. 그들은 섬기는 활기찬 교회를 중심으로 여러 가지 공동체 사업을 계속하면서 수많은 사람들을 변화시켰습니다.

므낫세는 그의 나라를 처음에는 악하게 만들었다가 나중에 선한 나라로 변화시켰습니다. 열두 살에 유다의 왕위에 오른 그가 백성들을 잘못 이끈 결과 백성들은 오랫동안 커다란 악을 저질렀습니다(역대하 33:1-9). 백성들이 전혀 하나님의 경고에 주의를 기울이지 않자, 하나님은 므낫세를 바벨론에 포로로 잡혀가게 하셨습니다(10-11절).

왕이 고통을 당하며 겸손히 하나님께 크게 부르짖자 하나님은 그의 간구를 들으시고 그를 다시 왕위에 회복시키셨습니다 (12-13절). 이제 변화된 왕은 성벽을 다시 쌓고 이방신들을 제거했습니다 (14-15절). “그는 여호와의 단을 다시 쌓고......모든 유다 백성들에게 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 섬기라고 명령하였습니다”(16절, 현대인의 성경). 백성들은 이렇게 철저히 변화된 므낫세를 목격하면서 그들 자신도 변화되었습니다(17절).

우리가 하나님을 찾을 때, 하나님께서 우리를 변화시키시고 변화된 우리를 통해 공동체에 영향을 미치게 해주시기를 기도합니다.

Transformed and Transforming

Tani and Modupe grew up in Nigeria and went to the UK to study in the 1970s. Having been personally transformed by God’s grace, they never imagined that they would be used to transform one of the most deprived and segregated communities in England—Anfield in Liverpool. As Drs. Tani and Modupe Omideyi faithfully sought God and served their community, God restored hope to many. They lead a vibrant church and continue to run numerous community projects that have led to the transformation of countless lives.

Manasseh changed his community, first for evil and then for good. Crowned king of Judah at the age of twelve, he led his people astray and they did great evil for many years (2 CHRONICLES 33:1–9). They paid no attention to God’s warnings and so He allowed Manasseh to be taken prisoner to Babylon (VV 10–11).

In his distress, the king humbly cried out to God who heard his plea and restored him to his kingdom (VV 12–13). The now- reformed king rebuilt the city walls and got rid of the foreign gods (VV 14–15). “He restored the altar of the LORD and . . . told Judah to serve the LORD , the God of Israel” (V 16). As the people observed the radical transformation of Manasseh, so too were they transformed (V 17).

빛 가운데 걷기

달이 사라지면서 우리 숲속 마을에 어둠이 내려앉았습니다. 번개가 하늘을 가르고 폭풍우와 찢어지는 듯한 천둥소리가 이어졌습니다. 어린 나는 잠에서 깨어 무서움에 휩싸이면서 온갖 무시무시한 괴물들이 나를 덮치려 하는 모습을 상상했습니다! 그러나 날이 밝으면서 그 소리들은 사라지고, 해가 뜨면서 조용한 아침 햇빛에 새들이 지저귀었습니다. 무서운 밤의 어두움과 햇빛의 기쁨이 너무나 극명하게 대조되었습니다.

히브리서 저자는 이스라엘 백성들이 시내산에서 흑암과 폭풍이 너무 심해 두려워 숨어버렸던 그 때를 회상합니다(출애굽기 20:18-19). 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님의 임재는, 율법이라는 사랑의 선물을 주시는 자리임에도 흑암과 공포로 느껴졌습니다. 그것은 죄 많은 이스라엘 백성들이 하나님의 기준에 따라 살 수 없었기 때문이었습니다. 그들은 죄로 말미암아 흑암과 두려움 속에 걸어갔던 것입니다(히브리서 12:18-21).

그러나 하나님은 빛이십니다. 그분에게는 어두움이라고는 전혀 찾아볼 수 없습니다(요한1서 1:5) 히브리서 12장을 보면, 시내산은 하나님의 거룩하심과 불순종하던 우리의 옛 삶을 나타내는 반면, 아름다운 시온산은 하나님의 은혜와 믿는 자들이 “새 언약의 중보자” 이신 예수님 안에서 누리는 새 삶을 나타냅니다(22-24절).

누구든지 예수님을 따르는 자는 “어두움에 다니지 아니하고 생명의 빛을 얻을”(요한복음 8:12) 것입니다. 주님을 통해서 우리는 이전의 어두운 삶에서 벗어나 하나님 나라의 빛과 아름다움 가운데를 걸어가는 기쁨을 누릴 수 있습니다.

Walking in the Light

Darkness descended on our forest village when the moon disappeared. Lightning slashed the skies, followed by a rainstorm and crackling thunder. Awake and afraid, as a child I imagined all kinds of grisly monsters about to pounce on me! By daybreak, however, the sounds vanished, the sun rose, and calm returned as birds jubilated in the sunshine. The contrast between the frightening darkness of the night and the joy of the daylight was remarkably sharp.

The author of Hebrews recalls the time when the Israelites had an experience at Mount Sinai so dark and stormy they hid in fear (EXODUS 20:18–19). For them, God’s presence, even in His loving gift of the law, felt dark and terrifying. This was because, as sinful people, the Israelites couldn’t live up to God’s standards. Their sin caused them to walk in darkness and fear (HEBREWS 12:18–21).

But God is light; in Him there’s no darkness at all (1 JOHN 1:5). In Hebrews 12, Mount Sinai represents God’s holiness and our old life of disobedience, while the beauty of Mount Zion represents God’s grace and believers’ new life in Jesus, “the mediator of a new covenant” (VV 22–24).

Whoever follows Jesus will “never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (JOHN 8:12). Through Him, we can let go of the darkness of our old life and celebrate the joy of walking in the light and beauty of His kingdom. - LAWRENCE DARMANI

꼭 감은 눈

그 남자 아이는 그렇게 하지 말았어야 했다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 나는 아이가 잘못했다는 것을 스스로 알고 있음을 분명히 볼 수 있었습니다. 그 애 얼굴에 온통 그렇게 쓰여 있었습니다! 그가 뭘 잘못했는지 얘기해보려고 자리에 앉자 조카아이는 재빨리 눈을 꼭 감았습니다. 아이는 세 살짜리 아이들의 논리를 가지고, 자기가 나를 볼 수 없으면 나도 자기를 분명 볼 수 없을 거라고 생각하며 앉아 있었습니다. 그래서 자기가 내 눈에 보이지 않는다면 그가 예상하고 있던 대화(그리고 뒷감당)를 피할 수 있다는 것이었습니다.

바로 그 순간의 조카의 모습을 볼 수 ‘있었다는’ 것이 내게는 정말 다행한 일이었습니다. 아이의 행동을 용납할 수 없었고 또 잘못한 일에 대해 같이 이야기를 해야 했지만, 나는 우리 사이에 어떤 오해가 생기기를 원치 않았습니다. 나는 아이가 나의 얼굴을 똑바로 봐주기를 원했고 내가 얼마나 그 아이를 사랑하며 얼마나 간절히 용서해주기를 원하는지 알아주기를 바랐습니다! 그 순간 나는 아담과 하와가 에덴동산에서 하나님의 신뢰를 깨뜨렸을 때 하나님께서 어떻게 느끼셨을까 하는 생각이 얼핏 떠올랐습니다. 아담과 하와는 자신들이 죄를 지었다는 것을 알아차리고는 하나님으로부터 숨으려고 했습니다(창세기 3:10). 그러나 하나님은 내가 조카아이를 볼 수 있었던 것처럼 그들의 모습을 똑똑히 “보실” 수 있었습니다.

우리는 무언가 잘못했다는 것을 깨달을 때 그 결과를 회피하려는 경우가 자주 있습니다. 도망치기도 하고, 숨기기도 하며, 진실을 외면하기도 합니다. 하나님은 자신의 의의 기준에 따라 우리에게 죄의 책임을 물으시지만, 한편 우리를 보고 계십니다(그리고 우리를 찾고 계십니다!). 왜냐하면 우리를 사랑하시고 또 예수 그리스도를 통해 기꺼이 용서하시려 하기 때문입니다.

Eyes Tightly Shut

He knew he shouldn’t have done it. I could clearly see he knew it was wrong: it was written all over his face! As I sat down to discuss his wrongdoing with him, my nephew quickly squeezed his eyes shut. There he sat, thinking—with three-year-old logic—that if he couldn’t see me, then I must not be able to see him. And if he was invisible to me, then he could avoid the conversation (and consequences) he anticipated.

I’m so glad I could see him in that moment. While I couldn’t condone his actions, and we needed to talk about it, I really didn’t want anything to come between us. I wanted him to look fully into my face and see how much I love him and was eager to forgive him! In that moment, I caught a glimmer of how God might have felt when Adam and Eve broke His trust in the garden of Eden. Realizing their guilt, they tried to hide from God (GENESIS 3:10), who could “see” them as plainly as I could see my nephew.

When we realize we’ve done something wrong, we often want to avoid the consequences. We run from it, conceal it, or close our eyes to the truth. While God will hold us accountable to His righteous standard, He sees us (and seeks us!) because He loves us and offers forgiveness through Jesus Christ. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

물어보는 것이 좋다

우리 아버지는 언제나 방향 감각이 좋았는데, 나는 그것이 늘 부러웠습니다. 그저 본능적으로 동서남북이 어디인지알고 있던 아버지는 처음부터 방향감각을 가지고 태어난 것 같았습니다. 아버지는 언제나 옳았습니다. 아버지가 틀렸던
그날 밤까지는 말입니다.

그날 밤 아버지가 길을 잃어버린 것입니다 . 아버지와 어머니가 낯선 도시에서 어떤 행사에 갔다가 어두워진 후에 그곳을 떠났을 때였습니다. 아버지는 다시 고속도로로 되돌아가는 길을 안다고 자신했지만 그게 아니었습니다. 차를 돌려야
했고 혼란스러워하더니 결국 좌절하고 말았습니다. 어머니는 아버지를 안심시키며 말했습니다. “내키진 않겠지만, 전화기로 길을 찾아보세요. 괜찮아요.”

내가 알기로 아버지는 일흔 여섯 평생 처음으로 길을 물었던 것입니다. 그것도 자신의 전화에다가 말입니다.

시편 기자는 삶의 경험이 풍부한 사람이었습니다. 그러나 몇몇 시편을 보면 다윗이 영적으로 정서적으로 길을 잃은 것처럼 보이는 순간들을 보여주고 있습니다. 시편 143편에도 그런 순간이 기록되어 있습니다. 이 위대한 왕은 마음이 참담하고(4절) 어려움에 처해 있었습니다(11절). 그래서 그는 잠시 멈추어 “내가 다닐 길을 알게 하소서”(8절)라고 기도했습니다. 시편 기자는 전화기가 아닌 주님께 직접 부르짖었습니다. “내가 주를 의뢰함이니이다”(8절).

“[하나님의] 마음에 드는 사람”(사무엘상 13:14, 현대인의 성경)도 때때로 길을 잃은 것처럼 느꼈다면, 우리 또한 하나님께 의지해 그분의 인도를 받아야한다는 것은 당연한 일입니다.

It’s Good to Ask

My father has always had a directional sense I’ve envied. He’s just instinctively known where north, south, east, and west are. It’s like he was born with that sense. And he’s always been right. Until the night he wasn’t.

That was the night my father got lost. He and my mother attended an event in an unfamiliar town and left after dark. He was convinced he knew the way back to the highway, but he didn’t. He got turned around, then confused, and ultimately frustrated. My mother reassured him, “I know it’s hard, but ask your phone for directions. It’s okay.”

For the first time in his life that I’m aware of, my seventy- six-year-old father asked for directions. From his phone.

The psalmist was a man with a wealth of life experience. But the psalms reveal moments when it appears David felt lost spiritually and emotionally. Psalm 143 contains one of those times. The great king’s heart was dismayed (V 4). He was in trouble (V 11). So he paused and prayed, “Show me the way I should go” (V 8). And far from counting on a phone, the psalmist cried out to the Lord, “for to you I entrust my life” (V 8).

If the “man after [God’s] own heart” (1 SAMUEL 13:14) felt lost from time to time, it’s a given we too will need to turn to God for His direction. - JOHN BLASE

새해, 새로운 우선순위

나는 첼로를 연주하는 법을 늘 배우고 싶었지만, 한 번도 제대로 레슨을 받을 시간이 없었습니다. 아니, 시간을 내지 않았다는 것이 아마 더 솔직한 표현이겠지요. 나는 어쩌면 천국에서 그 악기를 마스터할 수 있으리라 생각했었습니다. 그래서 그때까지는 지금 당장 하나님이 내게 명하신 그분을 섬기는 바로 그 일에 나의 시간을 집중해서 사용하고 싶었습니다.

인생은 짧습니다. 그렇다 보니 우리는 이 세상에서 우리에게 주어진 시간이 가버리기 전에 그 시간을 최대로 활용해야 한다는 강박관념에 사로잡히게 됩니다. 그런데 시간을 최대로 활용해야 한다는 것이 진정 뜻하는 바가 무엇일까요?

솔로몬 왕은 삶의 의미를 깊이 성찰한 끝에 다음 두 가지를 권면하고 있습니다. 그 첫째는 가능한 한 가장 뜻있는 방법을 찾아 살아야 한다는 것입니다. 그런 방법들에는 하나님이 우리 인생에서 맛보게 허락하신 온갖 좋은 것들, 이를테면, 먹고 마시는 것(전도서 9:7), 옷과 향수(8절), 결혼(9절), 그밖에 첼로 연주를 배우는 것과 같이 하나님이 주신 온갖 좋은 은사들을 마음껏 즐기는 것들도 포함됩니다!

두 번째 권면은 부지런히 일하라는 것입니다(10절). 인생은 기회로 가득 차 있어, 언제나 해야 할 일들이 더 많이 있습니다. 우리는 우리의 재능으로 하나님을 섬길 때처럼, 일하는 것과 노는 것의 우선순위를 어떻게 정할 것인가에 대해 하나님의 지혜를 구하면서, 하나님께서 주시는 기회를 잘 활용해야 합니다.

인생은 주님의 놀라운 선물입니다. 매일 주님이 주시는 축복 아래 주님을 뜻있게 섬기면서 기쁨을 누린다면 그것이 바로 주님을 높여드리는 것입니다.

New Year, New Priorities

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the cello. But I’ve never found the time to enroll in a class. Or, perhaps more accurately, I haven’t made the time for it. I had thought that in heaven I could probably master that instrument. In the meantime, I wanted to focus on using my time in the particular ways God has called me to serve Him now.

Life is short, and we often feel the pressure to make the most of our time on Earth before it slips away. But what does that really mean?

As King Solomon contemplated the meaning of life, he offered two recommendations. First, we’re to live in the most meaningful way we can, which includes fully enjoying the good things God allows us to experience in life, such as food and drink (ECCLESIASTES 9:7), clothing and perfume (V 8 NLT ), marriage (V 9), and all of God’s good gifts—which might include learning how to play the cello!

His second recommendation was diligent work (V 10). Life is full of opportunities, and there is always more work to be done. We’re to take advantage of the opportunities God gives us, seeking His wisdom on how to prioritize work and play in a way that uses our gifting to serve Him.

Life is a wonderful gift from the Lord. We honor Him when we take pleasure both in His daily blessings and in meaningful service. - POH FANG CHIA
