조용한 증인

에이미는 복음을 전하는 것이 금지된 폐쇄된 국가에 삽니다. 그녀는 신생아들을 돌보는 큰 병원에서 일하는 잘 훈련된 간호사입니다. 에이미는 아주 헌신적으로 일하는 간호사여서 유난히 두드러져 보입니다. 그래서 많은 여성들이 그녀에게 호기심을 갖습니다. 감동을 받아 개인적으로 질문을 하는 사람들에게 에이미는 드러내놓고 자기의 구주에 대해 이야기합니다.

일을 잘하는 에이미를 시기하는 어떤 동료들이 그녀가 약을 훔쳤다고 고발 했습니다. 에이미의 상사들은 그 동료들의 말을 믿지 않았고, 얼마가 지나 관계당국이 범인을 찾아냈습니다. 이 사건으로 동료 간호사들이 그녀의 믿음에 관해 묻게 되었습니다. 에이미의 이야기를 들으며 베드로가 한 말이 생각납니다. “사랑하는 자들아......너희가 이방인 중에서 행실을 선하게 가져 너희를 악행한다고 비방하는 자들로 하여금 너희 선한 일을 보고 오시는 날에 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 하려 함이라”(베드로전서 2:11-12).

하나님이 우리 안에서 일하시게 하면 우리의 집이나 직장, 학교에서의 매일의 삶이 다른 사람들에게 영향을 끼치게 됩니다. 우리 주위의 모든 사람이 우리의 언행을 지켜보고 있습니다. 하나님께 의지하여 우리의 행동과 생각을 주관하도록 하십시다. 그러면 믿지 않는 사람들이 영향을 받아 그들 중 어떤 사람들은 예수님을 믿게 될 것입니다.

Quiet Witness

Amy lives in a closed country where it’s forbidden to preach the gospel. She’s a trained nurse who works in a big hospital, caring for newborn babies. She’s such a committed professional that her work stands out, and many women are curious about her. They are moved to ask her questions in private. It’s then that Amy shares about her Savior openly.

Because of her good work, some coworkers were envious and accused her of stealing some medicine. Her superiors didn’t believe them, and authorities eventually found the culprit. This episode led some of her fellow nurses to ask about her faith. Her example reminds me of what Peter says: “Dear friends . . . . Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God” (1 PETER 2:11–12 NLT ).

Our everyday lives at home, in our work environment, or at school make an impact on others when we let God work in us. We’re surrounded by people who are watching the way we speak and behave. Let’s depend on God and have Him rule our actions and thoughts. Then we’ll influence those who don’t believe and this may lead some of them to turn in faith to Jesus. - KEILA OCHOA

지속적으로 도움을 주는 분

척추 부상으로 몸이 마비된 마티는 학교로 다시 돌아가 경영학석사 학위(MBA)를 얻기로 결심했습니다. 마티의 어머니 주디는 이런 아들의 목표가 실현되도록 도와주었습니다. 그녀는 모든 강의와 스터디 그룹에 아들과 함께 앉아 필기를 하며 기술적인 문제들을 해결해주었습니다. 주디는 아들이 졸업장을 받으려 단상에 오르는 것까지도 도와주었습니다. 마티가 해낼 것 같지 않았던 일이 지속적으로 실제적인 도움을 받음으로 가능해진 것입니다.

예수님은 이 세상을 떠난 뒤에 그의 제자들도 이와 비슷한 도움이 필요할 것을 아셨습니다. 주님은 앞으로 제자들과 함께 있지 않게 될 것이라고 말씀하시며 그들이 성령을 통해 하나님과 새롭게 연결될
것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 이 성령님은 순간순간 도움을 주시려고 그들과 함께 거하실 뿐만 아니라 그들 속에서 스승이자 인도자가 되실 분이었습니다(요한복음 14:17,26).

성령님은 예수님의 제자들에게 하나님이 주시는 내적인 도움을 주어, 그들이 복음을 전하기 위해 사방으로 흩어져 나갈 때 스스로 해결할 수 없는 것들을 인내하게 하실 것입니다. 환난 중에 있을 때에는 예수님이 그들에게 하신 모든 말씀을 생각나게 하실 것입니다(26절). “너희는 마음에 근심하지 말라......서로 사랑하라.......나는 부활이요 생명이다.”

당신의 힘과 능력으로는 감당치 못할 어떤 일에 직면해 있습니까? 당신은 성령님의 지속적인 도움을 의지할 수 있습니다. 당신 안에서 일하시는 성령님이 하나님이 받으셔야할 영광을 그분께 돌려드릴 것입니다.

A Constant Helper

After a spinal injury left Marty paralyzed, he decided to go back to school to earn his MBA. Marty’s mother, Judy, helped make his goal a reality. She sat with him through every lecture and study group, jotting notes and handling technology issues. She even assisted him onto the platform when he received his diploma. What might have been unattainable became possible with the consistent, practical help Marty received.

Jesus knew His followers would need a similar kind of support after He left the earth. When He told them about His upcoming absence, He said they would gain a new kind of connection with God through the Holy Spirit. This Spirit would be a moment-by-moment helper—a teacher and guide who would not only live with them but also be in them (JOHN 14:17, 26).

The Spirit would provide Jesus’s disciples with internal help from God, which would enable them to endure what they couldn’t handle on their own as they fanned out to share the good news. In moments of struggle, the Spirit would remind them of everything Jesus said to them (V. 26): Do not let your hearts be troubled . . . Love one another . . . I am the resurrection and the life.

Are you facing something that exceeds your own strength and ability? You can depend on the Spirit’s constant help. God’s Spirit working in you will bring Him the glory He deserves. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

어머니의 사랑

수는 어렸을 때 부모가 이혼하면서 양육권과 다른 문제들을 둘러싼 법적 다툼으로 한동안 보육원에서 살아야 했습니다. 수는 큰 아이들에게 괴롭힘을 당하면서 외로웠고 자신이 버려졌다고 느꼈습니다. 어머니는 한 달에 딱 한번 수를 찾아왔고 아버지는 거의 볼 수 없었습니다. 하지만 오랜 시간이 지난 후에야 어머니는 수에게 보육원의 규칙 때문에 자주 찾아가지 못했지만 딸을 잠깐이라도 보려는 희망으로 매일 울타리 옆에 서 있었다고 말했습니다. 어머니는 “어떤 때는 그냥 잘 있나 확인만 하려고 정원에서 놀고 있는 너를 그냥 지켜보곤 했어.”라고 말했습니다.

나는 수의 이야기를 들으며 하나님 사랑의 한 모습을 보았습니다. 우리도 몹시 힘들 때 버려져서 혼자라고 느낄 때가 있습니다. 그러나 사실 하나님이 우리를 언제나 지켜보고 계신다는 것이 얼마나 위로가 되는지 모릅니다!(시편 33:18). 우리는 주님을 볼 수 없을지라도 주님은 거기에 계십니다. 자녀를 사랑하는 부모처럼 우리가 어디를 가든 주님의 눈과 마음은 항상 우리에게 있습니다. 그러나 수의 엄마와는 달리 주님은 언제든지 우리를 위해 행동하실 수 있습니다.

시편 91편은 하나님이 그분의 자녀들을 구원하고 보호하고 세워주시는 모습을 보여줍니다. 하나님은 피난처나 대피소 그 이상의 분이십니다. 우리가 인생의 어두운 골짜기를 지날 때 전능하신 하나님이 우리를 지켜보시고 우리 삶 속에 살아 역사하신다는 사실을 알면 위로가 됩니다. 주님은 “내가 [너에게] 응답하리라 환난 당할 때에 내가 [너와] 함께 하여 [너를] 건지리라”(15절)라고 선포하십니다.

A Mother’s Love

When Sue’s parents divorced when she was young, the legal tussle over her custody and other matters resulted in her being sent to a children’s home for a while. Bullied by bigger kids, she felt lonely and abandoned. Her mother visited only once a month, and she hardly saw her father. It was only years later, however, that her mother told her that while the home’s rules prevented her from visiting more often, she had stood at the fence every single day, hoping to catch a glimpse of her daughter. “Sometimes,” she said, “I would just watch you playing in the garden, just to check if you were okay.”

When Sue shared this story, it gave me a glimpse of God’s love. Sometimes we may feel abandoned and alone in our struggles. How comforting it is know that God is in fact watching over us all the time! (PSALM 33:18). Even though we can’t see Him, He is there. Like a loving parent, His eyes and His heart are constantly on us wherever we go. Yet, unlike Sue’s mom, He can act on our behalf at any time.

Psalm 91 describes God delivering, protecting, and lifting up His children. He is more than a refuge and a shelter. As we navigate the dark valleys of life, we can take comfort in the knowledge that the all-powerful Lord is watching over us and is active in our lives. “I will answer [you],” He declares. “I will be with [you] in trouble, I will deliver [you]” (V. 15). - LESLIE KOH

우리가 가진 것

내 친구가 자기 집에서 어느 명절날을 맞아 가족과 친구들을 열정적으로 불러 모았습니다. 손님들은 식탁에 함께 모일 날을 고대하는 가운데 많은 사람들이 먹을 음식비용을 분담하기 위해 각자 음식을 가져오자고 했습니다. 몇몇은 빵을, 다른 사람들은 샐러드나 반찬을 가져오기로 했습니다. 하지만 한 여자 손님은 사랑하는 사람들과 저녁시간을 함께 보내고 싶지만 재정적으로 너무 빠듯하여 음식을 살 만한 여유가 없었습니다. 그래서 그녀는 음식을 준비하는 대신 선물로 집주인의 집을 청소해주었습니다.

그녀가 그냥 빈손으로 왔더라도 식사 자리에 환영 받았을 것입니다. 하지만 그녀는 자기에게 있는 것이 무엇인가 찾아보고 시간과 재능을 순전한 마음으로 그 모임에 가져왔습니다. 나는 그것이 바로 고린도후서 8장에서 바울 사도가 한 말에 담겨 있는 정신이라고 생각합니다. 동료 그리스도인들을 도와주기를 간절히 원했던 그들에게 바울은 그 노력을 끝까지 계속하라고 독려했습니다. 바울은 그들에게 주고자 하는 마음만 있다면 선물의 크기나 양에 상관없이 다 받으신다고 말하면서 주고자 하는 그들의 열심과 의지를 칭찬했습니다(12절).

우리는 종종 우리의 베푸는 것을 다른 사람들의 것과 바로 비교해봅니다. 특히 우리가 주고 싶은 만큼 많이 가지지 못했을 때 그렇습니다. 그러나 하나님은 우리가 베푸는 것을 다르게 보십니다. 하나님은 우리가 가진 것을 기꺼이 주려는 그 마음을 사랑하십니다.

What We Have

My friend was eager to gather her family and friends for a festive holiday celebration at her home. Each of the guests looked forward to gathering around the table together and wanted to help defray the expense of feeding so many by contributing to the meal. Some would bring bread, others salad or a side dish. For one guest, however, money was exceptionally tight. Although she looked forward to spending the evening with those whom she loved, she couldn’t afford to purchase any food. So, instead, she offered to clean the host’s home as her gift.

She would have been welcome at the table had she come empty-handed. Yet she looked at what she did have to offer her time and skills—and brought them to the gathering with her whole heart. I think that’s precisely the spirit of Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 8. They had been eager to give to help some fellow Christians, and he urged them to follow through on that effort. He commended them for their desire and their willingness, saying their motivation to give is what makes a gift of any size or amount acceptable (V. 12).

We’re often quick to compare our giving to that of others, especially when our resources don’t afford us the luxury of giving as much as we’d like to. But God views our giving differently: it’s our willingness to give what we have that He loves. - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

숨겨진 사역

큰 학술 프로젝트로 중압감을 느끼던 나는 마감 시한까지 끝낼 수 있을지 초조했습니다. 그렇게 걱정하고 있을 때 나를 응원해주는 친구들로부터 격려의 메모를 세 개 받았습니다. 메모에는 모두 “오늘 기도할 때 하나님이 너를 생각나게 해주셨어.”라고 쓰여 있었습니다. 나는 이 친구들이 내가 무슨 일을 겪고 있는지 모르면서 나에게 이런 연락을 해준 것에 대해 겸손해지면서도 위로를 받았습니다. 그리고 하나님께서 그들을 사랑의 전달자로 사용하셨다고 믿었습니다.

바울 사도는 고린도교회 사람들에게 편지할 때 기도의 능력을 알고 있었습니다. 그는 “우리를 위하여 간구함으로 도와주면” 하나님이 계속해서 그들을 위험에서 구해주실 것을 믿는다고 말했습니다 (고린도후서 1:10-11). 그리고 하나님이 그들의 기도에 응답하실 때 사람들은 “많은 사람들의 기도에 대한 응답”(11절, 현대인의 성경)에 감사드리게 되고 하나님은 영광 받게 될 것입니다.

내 친구들과 바울을 돕는 이들은 다 중보기도 사역에 참여한 것이었습니다. 오스왈드 챔버스는 이를 “하나님 아버지께서 영광을 받으시는 열매 맺는 숨겨진 사역”이라고 불렀습니다. 우리의 생각과 마음을 예수님께 집중할 때 예수님은 우리의 기도하는 방법을 포함해서 우리를 빚어 가십니다. 주님은 우리가 친구나 가족, 심지어 전혀 모르는 사람들을 위해서도 진정으로 중보하여 기도하게 하십니다.

A Hidden Ministry

A big academic project was weighing on me, and I was fretting over whether I could complete it by the deadline. In the midst of my anxious thoughts, I received three notes of encouragement from friends who were cheering me on. Each one said, “God brought you to mind today when I was praying.” I felt humbled and encouraged that these friends would contact me without knowing what I was going through, and I believed God had used them as His messengers of love.

The apostle Paul knew the power of prayer when he wrote to the people in the church of Corinth. He said he trusted that God would continue to deliver them from peril “as you help us by your prayers” (2 CORINTHIANS 1:10–11). And when God answered their prayers, He would be glorified as the people gave Him thanks for the “answer to the prayers of many” (V. 11).

My friends and Paul’s supporters were engaging in the ministry of intercession, which Oswald Chambers calls “a hidden ministry that brings forth fruit through which the Father is glorified.” As we focus our minds and hearts on Jesus, we find Him shaping us, including how we pray. He enables us to give the gift of true intercession to friends, family members, and even strangers.

틀린 쪽에 있나요?

가나의 테키만으로 향하는 다리가 강물에 휩쓸려가자 타노강 건너편에 있던 뉴크로보 주민들은 발이 묶여버렸습니다. 테키만에 위치한 사무엘 아피아 목사의 교회에 출석하는 신자들도 마찬가지로 고통을 겪었습니다. 왜냐하면 교회 신자들 중 많은 사람들이 강의 “틀린” 쪽에 있는 뉴크로보에 살고 있었기 때문입니다.

그런 위기 가운데 사무엘 목사는 더 많은 고아들을 돌보기 위해 교회의 어린이 집을 확장하려고 노력하고 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 기도했습니다. 그러고 나서 그의 교회는 강 건너편 뉴크로보의 야외에서의 모임들을 지원해주었습니다. 얼마 후 그들은 예수님을 믿는 새 신자들에게 세례를 주고 새 교회가 뿌리를 내렸습니다. 그 뿐 아니라, 뉴크로보에는 고아들을 돌볼 수 있는 공간이 준비되어 있었습니다. 하나님은 위기 속에 주님의 회복 사역을 엮어가고 계셨던 것입니다.

바울 사도가 자유를 잃어버린 “틀린” 쪽에 처했을 때 자신의 상황을 비관하지 않고 오히려 빌립보교회에 이런 힘 있는 편지를 썼습니다. “형제들아 나의 당한 일이 도리어 복음의 진보가 된 줄을 너희가 알기를 원하노라”(빌립보서 1:12). 바울은 그의 매임으로 “모든 시위대” 가 그리스도를 알게 되었으며(13절), 다른 형제들이 겁 없이 예수님의 말씀을 담대히 전하게 되었다(14절)고 기록했습니다.

장애물들이 많았지만 사무엘 목사와 바울 사도는 위기 속에서 하나님께서 사역할 길을 새롭게 열어주시는 것을 보았습니다. 오늘 우리의 힘든 상황 속에서 하나님은 무엇을 하고 계실까요?

On the Wrong Side?

When the bridge to Techiman, Ghana, washed out, residents of New Krobo on the other side of the Tano River were stranded. Attendance at Pastor Samuel Appiah’s church in Techiman suffered too because many of the members lived in New Krobo—on the “wrong” side of the river.

Amid the crisis, Pastor Sam was trying to expand the church’s children’s home to care for more orphans. So he prayed. Then his church sponsored outdoor meetings across the river in New Krobo. Soon they were baptizing new believers in Jesus. A new church took root. Not only that, New Krobo had space to care for the orphans awaiting housing. God was weaving His restorative work into the crisis.

When the apostle Paul found himself on the “wrong” side of freedom, he didn’t lament his situation. In a powerful letter to the church in Philippi, he wrote, “I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” (PHILIPPIANS 1:12). Paul noted how his chains had led to “the whole palace guard” learning about Christ (V. 13). And others had gained confidence to share the good news of Jesus (V. 14).

Despite obstacles, Pastor Sam and the apostle Paul found God showing them new ways to work in their crises. What might God be doing in our challenging circumstances today? - TIM GUSTAFSON

나는 파견된 직원과 어려운 대화를 나누기 위해 50마일(약 80 킬로미터)을 운전해서 간 적이 있습니다. 다른 직원으로부터 그 직원이 우리 회사를 잘못 전하고 있다는 보고를 받고 회사의 평판이 염려되었던 것입니다. 나는 그 직원이 태도를 바꿀 수 있도록 조언을 꼭 해주어야겠다고 느꼈습니다.

사무엘상 25장을 보면 장차 이스라엘의 왕이 될 사람이 재앙이 될 선택을 하려고 할 때 엄청난 개인적인 위험을 무릅쓰고 그와 대면한 뜻밖의 사람이 있습니다. 아비가일은 나발의 아내였는데 나발은 그 이름이 의미하는 바와 같이 그 성품이 “어리석은” 자였습니다(3,25절). 나발은 다윗과 그의 군사들에게 자신의 가축을 보호해준 것에 대한 임금을 관례대로 지불하지 않았습니다 (10-11절). 다윗이 그녀의 남편 일족을 모두 죽여 복수하려 한다는 것을 들은 아비가일은 또한 자기의 무지한 남편이 상대방의 말에 귀기울이지 않는다는 것을 알기 때문에 화친을 위한 예물을 마련하여 나귀를 타고 가서 다윗을 만나 생각을 돌이켜 달라고 설득했습니다(18-31절).

어떻게 아비가일이 다윗을 설득하게 되었을까요? 그녀는 다윗과 그의 군사들에게 빚도 갚고 그들이 만족할 만큼 충분한 음식을 당나귀에 먼저 실어 보낸 다음 다윗에게 진실을 말했습니다. 아비가일은 지혜를 내어 다윗에게 그의 삶을 향한 하나님의 부르심을 생각하게 하였습니다. 다윗이 복수심을 참으면 하나님이 그를 왕으로 세우셨을 때 무죄한 피를 흘리게 한 것으로 마음에 걸리는 일이 없을 것이라고 하였습니다(31절).

당신도 누군가 다른 사람들을 해롭게 하거나 하나님을 위한 자신의 앞날을 손상시킬지도 모를 실수를 저지를 수 있는 사람을 알고 있을지도 모릅니다. 하나님께서 아비가일처럼 당신도 어려운 대화를 하라고 부르고 있지는 않습니까?

I once drove fifty miles to have a hard conversation with a remote staff person. I had received a report from another employee that suggested he was misrepresenting our company, and I was concerned for our reputation. I felt nudged to offer an opinion that might change his choices.

In 1 Samuel 25, an unlikely person took great personal risk to confront a future king of Israel who was about to make a disastrous choice. Abigail was married to Nabal, whose character matched the meaning of his name (“fool”) (VV. 3, 25). Nabal had refused to pay David and his troops the customary wage for protecting his livestock (VV. 10–11). Hearing that David planned a murderous revenge on her household, and knowing her foolish husband wouldn’t listen to reason, Abigail prepared a peace offering, rode to meet David, and persuaded him to reconsider (VV. 18–31).

How did Abigail accomplish this? After sending ahead donkeys loaded with food to satisfy David and his men and settle the debt, she spoke truth to David. She wisely reminded David of God’s call on his life. If he resisted his desire for revenge, when God made him king, he wouldn’t “have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed” (V. 31).

건축을 멈추지 말라!

사이먼은 직장에서 새로운 역할을 맡을 기회가 주어졌을 때 그것이 하나님의 선물이라고 믿었습니다. 어떻게 해야할까 기도하고 도움을 구한 그는 하나님이 그에게 더 큰 책임들을 감당할 기회를 주신 것이라고 느꼈습니다. 모든 일이 맞아 떨어졌고 그의 상사도 그가 옮기는 것을 지원해주었습니다. 그런데 그 후에 일이 잘못되기 시작했습니다. 일부 동료들이 그의 승진에 분개하고 협력을 거부한 것입니다. 그는 포기해야 하나 고민하기 시작했습니다.

이스라엘 백성들이 하나님의 전을 짓기 위해 예루살렘으로 돌아왔을 때에도 대적들이 위협하고 낙담시키려 했습니다 (에스라 4:4). 처음에 건축을 중단한 이스라엘 백성들은 하나님이 선지자 학개와 스가랴를 통해 격려하시자 건축을 계속하였습니다(4:24-5:2).

그러자 또 다시 대적들이 그들을 괴롭혔습니다. 그러나 이번에는 “하나님의 눈이 [그들을] 돌보신다”(5:5)는 것을 알고 견뎌냈습니다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀을 굳게 붙잡고 하나님이 어떤 대적도 헤쳐나가게 해주실 것을 믿었습니다. 그리고 정말로 하나님은 바사 왕의 마음을 움직여 성전을 완공하도록 지원하게 하셨습니다(13-14절).

마찬가지로 사이먼도 그냥 머무를 것인지 아니면 새로운 자리로 옮길 것인지 분별할 수 있는 하나님의 지혜를 구했습니다. 하나님께서 그에게 머물라고 하시는 것을 느낀 그는 하나님의 능력에 의지하여 인내했습니다. 시간이 흐르면서 그는 서서히 동료들의 신임을 얻게 되었습니다.

하나님을 따르려고 할 때 주님이 우리를 어디에 두시든 도중에 반대에 부딪힐 수 있습니다. 그때가 바로 계속 주님을 따라야 할 때입니다. 주님은 우리를 인도하여 끝까지 이끌어주실 것입니다.

Don’t Stop Building!

When an opportunity came to take on a new role at work, Simon believed it was a godsend. After praying over the decision and seeking counsel, he felt that God was giving him this opportunity to take on bigger responsibilities. Everything fell into place, and his boss supported his move. Then things began to go wrong. Some colleagues resented his promotion and refused to cooperate. He began to wonder if he should give up.

When the Israelites returned to Jerusalem to build the house of God, enemies sought to frighten and discourage them (EZRA 4:4). The Israelites stopped at first, but continued after God encouraged them through the prophets Haggai and Zechariah (4:24–5:2).

Once again, enemies came to hassle them. But this time they persevered, knowing “the eye of their God was watching over [them]” (5:5). They held on firmly to God’s instructions and trusted Him to carry them through whatever opposition they’d face. Sure enough, God moved the Persian king to support the temple’s completion (VV. 13–14).

Similarly, Simon sought God’s wisdom to discern whether he should stay or find a new position. Sensing God calling him to remain, he relied on God’s strength to persevere. Over time, he slowly gained his colleagues’ acceptance.

As we seek to follow God, wherever He places us, we may face opposition along the way. That’s when we need to keep following Him. He will guide us and carry us through. - LESLIE KOH

만짐의 능력

20세기 인도 의료선교의 선구자였던 폴 브랜드 박사는 나병과 관련되어 낙인이 찍힌 사람들을 직접 보게 되었습니다. 진료 중에 그는 환자에게 손을 대며 치료가 가능하다고 안심시켜주었습니다. 그러자 눈물이 그 남자의 얼굴을 타고 흘러내리기 시작했습니다. 보조원이 브랜드 박사에게 그 눈물의 의미를 설명해주었습니다 . “선생님은 오랫동안 아무도 손대지 않았던 그 사람을 만져주셨습니다. 그 눈물은 기쁨의 눈물입니다.”

예수님의 사역 초기에 한 나병환자가 주님께 다가왔습니다. 고대에는 온갖 종류의 전염성 피부 질환이 다 나병으로 취급받았습니다. 그 남자는 그의 병 때문에 구약의 율법에 따라 공동체 밖에서 살아야만 했습니다. 만약 그 나병환자가 우연히 가까운 거리에 있는 건강한 사람을 보면 “부정하다! 부정하다!”라고 외쳐서 사람들이 그를 피할 수 있도록 해야 했습니다 (레위기 13:45-46). 그래서 아마도 그 병자는 여러 달, 아니 여러 해 동안 사람들과 아무런 접촉이 없이 지냈을 것입니다.

예수님은 불쌍히 여겨 손을 내밀어 그 사람을 만지셨습니다. 예수님은 말씀 한 마디로 사람들을 고칠 능력과 권세를 가지신 분이십니다(마가복음 2:11-12). 그러나 육신의 질병으로 고립되고 거부당하는 사람을 만나셨을 때, 예수님은 그를 만져주심으로 혼자가 아니며 받아들여졌다는 확신을 주셨습니다.

하나님께서 우리에게 그런 기회를 주실 때 우리도 은혜를 함께 나누며 부드러운 손길로 존엄성과 가치를 전해주면서 우리의 긍휼을 보여주어야 합니다. 단순히 사람의 손으로 그렇게 만져줄 때, 치유의 능력은 상처받은 사람들에게 우리의 돌봄과 관심을 오래도록 생각나게 해줄 것입니다.

Power of Touch

Dr. Paul Brand, twentieth-century pioneer medical missionary to India, saw firsthand the stigma associated with leprosy. During an appointment, he touched a patient to reassure him treatment was possible. Tears began to stream down the man’s face. An attendant explained the tears to Dr. Brand, saying, “You touched him and no one has done that for years. They are tears of joy.”

Early in His ministry, Jesus was approached by a man with leprosy, an ancient label for all types of infectious skin diseases. Because of his disease the man was required by the Old Testament law to live outside his community. If the sick man accidentally found himself in close proximity to healthy people, he had to call out, “Unclean! Unclean!” so they could avoid him (LEVITICUS 13:45–46). As a result, the man may have gone months or years without human contact.

Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. Jesus had the power and authority to heal people with just a word (MARK 2:11–12). But as Jesus encountered a man whose physical illness left him feeling isolated and rejected, His touch assured the man that he was not alone but accepted.

As God gives us opportunities, we can extend grace and show compassion with a gentle touch that conveys dignity and value. The simple, healing power of human touch goes a long way to remind hurting people of our care and concern. - LISA SAMRA

하나님 되심을 감사

인사 카드에 인쇄된 수많은 감상적인 표현 가운데 가장 감동적인 것의 하나는 아마도 “당신이어서 감사합니다.”라는 단순한 표현일 것입니다. 만일 당신이 그런 카드를 받는다면 그 사람이 당신을 좋아하는 것은 그에게 대단한 일을 해주었기 때문이 아니라 당신의 존재 자체에 대해 감사하기 때문이라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

이 같은 표현이 우리가 하나님께 “감사합니다”라고 말하는 최고의 방법 중 하나가 될 수 있을지 모릅니다. 물론 하나님이 우리 삶에 구체적으로 개입하실 때 우리는 “주님, 저에게 그 직장을 주셔서 감사합니다.” 라고 말할 수도 있습니다. 그러나 대부분의 경우 우리는 단순히 “하나님, 하나님 되심을 감사합니다.”라고 고백할 수 있습니다.

그것은 역대상 16장 34절과 같은 구절에도 들어있습니다. “여호와께 감사하라 그는 선하시며 그의 인자하심이 영원함이로다.” 선하신 사랑의 하나님이시기에 감사드립니다. 그리고 시편 7편 17절에도 있습니다. “내가 여호와께 그의 의를 따라 감사함이여.” 거룩하신 하나님이시기에 감사드립니다. 그리고 “우리가 감사함으로 그 앞에 나아가며......여호와는 크신 하나님이시요” (시편 95:2-3). 전능하신 하나님이심을 감사드립니다.

‘하나님 되심.’ 그것은 우리가 하던 일을 멈추고 하나님을 찬양하며 감사해야 할 충분한 이유가 됩니다. 하나님, 단지 하나님이시라는 그 사실에 감사드립니다!

Thanks for Who God Is

Among the thousands of sentiments printed on greeting cards, perhaps one of the most touching is this simple statement: “Thanks for being you.” If you receive that card, you know that someone cares for you not because you did something spectacular for that person but because you’re appreciated for your essence.

I wonder if this kind of sentiment might indicate for us one of the best ways to say “thank you” to God. Sure, there are times when God intervenes in our lives in a tangible way, and we say something like, “Thank You, Lord, for allowing me to get that job.” But most often, we can simply say, “Thank You, God, for being who You are.”

That’s what’s behind verses like 1 Chronicles 16:34: “Give thanks to the LORD , for he is good; his love endures forever.” Thank You, God, for who You are—good and loving. And Psalm 7:17: “I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness.” Thank You, God, for who You are—the holy One. And “Let us come before him with thanksgiving . . . for the Lord is the great God” (PSALM 95:2–3). Thank You, God, for who You are—the Almighty God of the universe.

Who God is. That’s reason enough for us to stop what we’re doing and praise and thank Him. Thank You, God, for just being You! - DAVE BRANON
