조류와 규조류

“규조류가 뭐지?” 나는 친구의 어깨너머로 그녀의 휴대폰에 있는 현미경으로 찍은 사진을 보면서 물었습니다. 그녀가 설명해주었습니다. “응, 그건 해조류 같은 건데 육안으로 보기가 힘들어. 가끔은 오일 한 방울을 렌즈에 떨어뜨려야 하는데, 그러지 않으면 죽어야만 보여.” 앉아서 친구가 넘기는 사진들을 보며 정말 놀랐습니다. 현미경으로나 겨우 볼 수 있을 정도로 복잡하고 미세한 것에도 하나님이 생명을 주셨다는 생각이 머리를 떠나지 않았습니다.

하나님의 창조와 사역은 끝날 줄을 모릅니다. 욥기를 보면 욥의 친구 엘리후가 모두를 잃어버린 욥이 몸부림치고 있을 때 이 점을 지적합니다. 엘리후는 친구에게 이렇게 도전합니다. “욥이여 이것을 듣고 가만히 서서 하나님의 오묘한 일을 깨달으라 하나님이 이런 것들에게 명령하셔서 그 구름의 번개로 번쩍거리게 하시는 것을 그대가 아느냐 그대는 겹겹이 쌓인 구름과 완전한 지식의 경이로움을 아느냐”(욥기 37:14-16). 인간으로서 우리는 하나님과 그분이 지으신 창조물의 복잡성을 다 이해할 수 없습니다.

이렇게 우리가 보지 못하는 피조물들까지도 하나님의 영광과 능력을 드러냅니다. 그분의 영광이 우리를 에워싸고 있습니다. 오늘 우리가 어떤 일을 겪고 있든지, 비록 우리가 보지 못하고 깨닫지 못할 때라도 하나님은 역사하고 계십니다. 우리 모두 “헤아릴 수 없이 큰일을 행하시며 기이한 일을 셀 수없이 행하시는”(욥기 5:9) 하나님을 지금 찬양합시다.

Algae and Diatoms

“What’s a diatom?” I asked my friend. I was leaning over her shoulder looking at pictures on her cell phone she had taken through a microscope. “Oh, it’s like algae, but it’s harder to see. Sometimes you need a drop of oil on the lens or they have to be dead to see them,” she explained. I sat amazed as she scrolled through the pictures. I couldn’t stop thinking about the intricate detail God put into life that we can only see with a microscope!

God’s creation and works are endless. In the book of Job, one of Job’s friends, Elihu, points this out to Job as he struggles through his loss. Elihu challenges his friend, “Listen to this, Job; stop
and consider God’s wonders. Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash? Do you know how the clouds hang poised, those wonders of him who has perfect knowledge?” (JOB 37:14–16). We, as humans, can’t begin to understand the complexity of God and His creation.

Even the parts of creation we can’t see reflect God’s glory and power. His glory surrounds us. No matter what we’re going through, God is working, even when we can’t see it and don’t understand. Let’s praise Him today, for “He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted” (JOB 5:9). - JULIE SCHWAB

하늘을 가르시고

최근에 믿음을 버린 한 친구와 대화를 나누면서, ‘아무것도 안 하는 것 같은 하나님을 어떻게 믿겠어?’라는 귀에 익은 불평을 들었습니다. 누구나 뉴스에서 폭력 기사를 읽거나 우리 자신이 큰 슬픔을 겪을 때 이처럼 괴로운 질문을 한번쯤은 하게 됩니다. 우리 모두가 느끼는 간절함처럼, 내 친구의 괴로움은 자기를 위해 행하시는 하나님을 찾는 간절한 바람에 지나지 않습니다.

이스라엘도 이런 상황을 뼈저리게 겪었습니다. 바벨론 제국은 이스라엘을 함락하여 철권으로 그들을 쳐부수고 예루살렘을 연기 자욱한 잔해의 도시로 바꾸어버렸습니다. 이사야 선지자는 백성들의 암울한 의심의 마음을 이렇게 표현했습니다. ‘우리를 구원하실 하나님은 어디에 계시는가?’(이사야 63:11-15) 그리고 나서 정확히 바로 이 지점에서 이사야는 담대히 하나님이 “하늘을 가르고 강림하시기를”(64:1) 기도했습니다. 고통과 슬픔에 쌓인 이사야는 하나님으로부터 멀어지지 않고, 오히려 하나님께 더 가까이 다가가려고 노력했습니다.

우리의 의심이나 어려움은 뜻밖의 선물을 가져다주기도 합니다. 우리가 어떻게 길을 잃었는지, 그리고 앞으로 나아가기 위해 하나님이 우리에게 얼마나 필요한 존재인지 알게 해줍니다. 우리는 지금 놀랍고도 있을 것 같지 않은 이야기를 읽고 있습니다. 예수님을 통해서 하나님은 하늘을 ‘확실히’ 가르시고 우리에게 오셨습니다. 그리스도께서는 자신의 찢기고 부서진 몸을 내어주시면서 그분의 사랑으로 우리를 덮으셨습니다. 예수님 안에서, 하나님은 우리와 매우 가까이 계십니다.

Rip the Heavens

In a recent conversation, where a friend shared with me that she’d abandoned her faith, I heard a familiar complaint: How can I believe in a God who doesn’t ever seem to do anything? This gut-wrenching question appears for most of us at one point or another, as we read of violence in the news and as we carry our own heartbreak. My friend’s distress revealed her intense need for God to act on her behalf, a longing we’ve all likely felt.

Israel knew this terrain well. The Babylonian Empire overwhelmed Israel, crushing them with an iron fist and turning Jerusalem into smoldering rubble. The prophet Isaiah put words to the people’s dark doubt: Where is the God who’s supposed to rescue us? (ISAIAH 63:11–15). And yet from precisely this place, Isaiah offered a bold prayer: God, “rend the heavens and come down” (64:1). Isaiah’s pain and sorrow drove him not to pull away from God, but to seek to draw closer to Him.

Our doubts and troubles offer a strange gift: they reveal how lost we are and how much we need God to move toward us. We see now the remarkable, improbable story. In Jesus, God did rip the heavens and come to us. Christ surrendered His own ripped and broken body so that He could overwhelm us with His love. In Jesus, God is very near. - WINN COLLIER

기분을 바꾸어주는 것

매주 한 번씩 가는 출근길에 역에서 기차를 기다리고 있는데, 여러 가지 부정적인 생각들이 마치 기차를 타려고 길게 줄서있는 통근자들처럼 내 마음 가득히 몰려왔습니다. 부채로 인한 스트레스, 나에 관한 좋지 않은 말들, 그리고 최근 가족이 당한 부당한 일에 대해 아무것도 할 수 없다는 무력감. 기차가 도착했을 때, 기분이 정말 최악이었습니다.

그러나 기차를 타고 가면서 다른 생각이 들었습니다. 하나님께 글로 적어서 나의 슬픔을 드리자는 생각이었습니다. 수첩에 나의 불평들을 모두 빠짐없이 적고 나서 바로 휴대폰을 꺼내 저장되어 있는 찬양을 들었습니다. 나도 모르는 사이에 최악이었던 나의 기분이 완전히 바뀌었습니다.

나도 모르게 나는 시편 94편 기자의 패턴을 따라 하고 있었습니다. 시편 기자도 먼저 자신의 불평을 쏟아냈습니다. “세계를 심판하시는 주여 일어나사 교만한 자들에게 마땅한 벌을 주소서......누가 나를 위하여 일어나서 행악자들을 치며 누가 나를 위하여 일어나서 악행하는 자들을 칠까” (시편 94:2,16). 이 시편 기자는 과부와 고아들에게 행해지는 부당한 일들을 하나님께 거침 없이 고하고 있습니다. 이렇게 일단 하나님께 한탄을 쏟아낸 후, 시편 내용은 주를 향한 찬양으로 옮겨갑니다. “여호와는 나의 요새이시요 나의 하나님은 내가 피할 반석이시라”(22절).

하나님은 우리의 아픔을 그분께 가져오라고 하십니다. 그러면 하나님은 우리의 두려움과 슬픔, 무력감을 찬양으로 변화시키십니다.

The Mood Mender

As I waited at the train station for my weekly commute, negative thoughts crowded my mind like commuters lining up to board a train—stress over debt, unkind remarks said to me, helplessness in the face of a recent injustice done to a family member. By the time the train arrived, I was in a terrible mood.

On the train, another thought came to mind: write a note to God, giving Him my lament. Soon after I finished pouring out my complaints in my journal, I pulled out my phone and listened to the praise songs in my library. Before I knew it, my bad mood had completely changed.

Little did I know that I was following a pattern set by the writer of Psalm 94. The psalmist first poured out his complaints: “Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve. . . . Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?” (PSALM 94:2, 16 ) He didn’t hold anything back as he talked to God about injustice done to widows and orphans. Once he’d made his lament to God, the psalm transitioned into praise: “But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge” (V 22).

God invites us to take our laments to Him. He can turn our fear, sadness, and helplessness into praise. LINDA WASHINGTON

이스라엘에 있는 홀로코스트 박물관 야드 바셈에서, 남편과 나는 홀로코스트 기간 동안 목숨을 걸고 유대인들을 구했던 사람들을 기리는 ‘여러 나라의 의로운 사람들’ 동산을 찾았습니다. 그 기념관을 관람하던 중 우리는 네덜란드에서 온 사람들을 만났는데, 그 중 한 여자는 큰 명판에 새겨진 조부모님의 이름을 보기 위해 왔다고 했습니다. 우리는 궁금증이 생겨 그녀의 가족사를 물어보았습니다.

나치에 저항하는 레지스탕스 조직의 일원이었던 그녀의 조부모 피터 뮬러와 아드리아나 뮬러 목사 부부는 1943년부터 1945년까지 두 살 난 유대인 남자 아이를 자신들의 여덟 자녀 중 막내라고 하며 키웠다고 합니다.

우리는 그 이야기에 감동하여 물었습니다. “그 아이는 살아남았나요?” 그러자 일행 중 나이가 든 남자 하나가 앞으로 나오면서 자신을 밝혔습니다. “내가 바로 그 아이입니다!”

유대인들을 위해 행한 많은 사람들의 용기 있는 행동들을 보면 에스더 왕후가 떠오릅니다. 어쩌면 왕후는 자신의 혈통을 숨기고 있었기 때문에 주전 350년경에 있었던 아하수에로 왕의 유대인 말살 칙령을 피해갈 수 있으리라고 생각했을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 그녀의 사촌이 그녀가 지금 왕후의 자리에 있는 것은 “이때를 위함이 아닌지”(에스더 4:14)라고 말하며 유대 자손임을 더 이상 침묵하지 말라고 간청했을 때, 에스더는 목숨을 위협받는 상황에서도 행동에 나서기로 결심했습니다.

그렇게 극적인 결정을 내려야 할 일이 우리에게는 전혀 없을지도 모릅니다. 하지만, 우리가 어떤 부당한 일에 대하여 목소리를 내야 할지 아니면 침묵할지, 또는 어려움에 처한 누군가에게 도움을 주어야 할지 아니면 모른척하고 넘어가야 할지 선택해야 할 상황에 마주칠 수는 있습니다. 그럴 때 하나님께서 우리에게 용기를 허락해 주시길 바랍니다.

Righteous Among the Nations

At Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum in Israel, my husband and I went to the Righteous Among the Nations garden that honors the men and women who risked their lives to save Jewish people during the Holocaust. While looking at the memorial, we met a group from the Netherlands. One woman was there to see her grandparents’ names listed on the large plaques. Intrigued, we asked about her family’s story.

Members of a resistance network, the woman’s grandparents Rev. Pieter and Adriana Müller took in a two-year-old Jewish boy and passed him off as the youngest of their eight children from 1943–1945.

Moved by the story, we asked, “Did the little boy survive?” An older gentleman in the group stepped forward and proclaimed, “I am that boy!”

The bravery of many to act on behalf of the Jewish people reminds me of Queen Esther. The queen may have thought she could escape King Xerxes’s decree to annihilate the Jews around 350 BC because she had concealed her ethnicity. However, she was convinced to act—even under the threat of death—when her cousin begged her to not remain silent about her Jewish heritage because she had been placed in her position “for such a time as this” (ESTHER 4:14).

We may never be asked to make such a dramatic decision. However, we will likely face the choice to speak out against an injustice or remain silent; to provide assistance to someone in trouble or turn away. May God grant us courage. - LISA SAMRA

동상에 안 걸림

어느 겨울 날, 아이들이 썰매 타러 가게 해달라고 졸랐습니다. 기온은 화씨로 0도(섭씨 영하 18도) 정도를 맴돌았고, 눈발이 창문 옆으로 휘날렸습니다. 한참 생각한 끝에 그러라고 했고, 대신 아이들에게 옷을 단단히 차려입고 반드시 함께 움직이며 15분만 놀다가 들어오라고 말했습니다.

사랑하는 마음으로 이런 규칙을 만들어주니 아이들은 동상에 걸릴 염려 없이 자유롭게 놀 수 있었습니다. 시편 119편 기자는 서로 모순되어 보이는 두 구절을 연이어 썼지만, 두 구절 모두에서 하나님 안에서의 같은 선한 목적을 인정하고 있다고 생각됩니다. “내가 주의 율법을 항상 지키리이다” “내가 주의 법도들을 구하였사오니 자유롭게 걸어갈 것이오며”(44-45절). 시편 기자는 어떻게 자유를 율법을 지키는 영적인 삶에 연관시키고 있는 걸까요?

하나님의 지혜로운 가르침을 잘 따르면 우리는 나중에 되돌리고 싶은 선택을 했을 때 겪게 될 결과를 피할 수 있습니다. 죄나 고통에 억눌리지 않고 삶을 더 자유롭게 즐길 수 있는 것입니다. 하나님은 우리가 해야 할 것, 하지 말아야 할 것들을 정해놓고 우리를 통제하기를 원하지 않으십니다. 그보다는, 하나님의 지침은 그분이 우리를 사랑하심을 보여주고 있습니다.

아이들은 썰매를 타다가 언덕 아래로 구르기도 했습니다. 아이들의 웃음소리와 빨개진 볼을 보면서 절로 웃음이 나왔습니다. 아이들은 정해준 범위 안에서 자유롭게 잘 놀았습니다. 이 미묘한 역설은 우리와 하나님과의 관계에도 존재합니다. 그것은 우리로 다음과 같은 시편 기자의 말에 공감하게 해줍니다. “나로 하여금 주의 계명들의 길로 행하게 하소서 내가 이를 즐거워함이니이다”(35절).

Free from Frostbite

On a winter day, my children begged to go sledding. The temperature hovered near zero degrees Fahrenheit. Snowflakes raced by our windows. I thought it over and said yes, but asked them to bundle up, stay together, and come inside after fifteen minutes.

Out of love, I created those rules so my children could play freely without suffering frostbite. I think the author of Psalm 119 recognized the same good intent in God as he penned two consecutive verses that might seem contradictory: “I will always obey your law” and “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out your precepts” (VV 44–45). How is it that the psalmist associated freedom with a spiritually law-abiding life?

Following God’s wise instruction allows us to escape the consequences that come from choices we later wish we could undo. Without the weight of guilt or pain we are freer to enjoy our lives. God doesn’t want to control us with dos and don’ts; rather, His guidelines show that He loves us.

While my kids were sledding, I watched them blast down the hill. I smiled at the sound of their laughter and the sight of their pink cheeks. They were free within the boundaries I’d given them. This compelling paradox is present in our relationship with God—it leads us to say with the psalmist, “Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight” (V 35). - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

와이드 샷

미국 최초의 흑인 대통령 취임식이 텔레비전으로 방영되는 동안, 카메라는 이 역사적인 순간의 증인이 되기 위해 모여든 이백만이나 되는 엄청난 군중을 파노라마처럼 보여주었습니다. CBS 뉴스 담당자 밥 쉬퍼가 “오늘 방송의 스타는 와이드 샷” 이라고 말할 정도로, 그것 아닌 다른 무엇으로도 링컨 기념관부터 국회 의사당까지 이어진 수많은 군중들을 한 번에 담아내기는 어려웠을 것입니다.

그러나 성경은 우리에게 예수 그리스도 안에서 믿음으로 뭉쳐진 더 많은 군중의 모습을 보여줍니다. “너희는 택하신 족속이요 왕 같은 제사장들이요 거룩한 나라요...... 이는 너희를 어두운 데서 불러내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 이의 아름다운덕을 선포하게 하려 하심이라”(베드로전서 2:9).

이것은 소수 특권층의 모습이 아니라, “각 족속과 방언과 백성과 나라 가운데서” (요한계시록 5:9) 속량 받은 수많은 무리의 모습입니다. 지금 우리는 예수님을 따른다는 이유로 많은 사람들이 고립되고 고난을 받고 있는 지구 상에 흩어져 살고 있습니다. 그러나 하나님의 말씀이라는 렌즈를 통해 우리는 우리를 구원하시고 자녀로 삼아주신 주님께 영광 돌리기 위해 믿음 안에서 함께 서있는 형제자매들을 와이드 샷으로 볼 수 있습니다.

우리를 어두움에서 빛으로 나오게 하신 그분께 다 같이 찬양을 올려드립시다!

The Wide Shot

During the television coverage of the inauguration of the first African-American president of the US, the camera showed a panoramic view of the enormous crowd of the nearly two million people who had gathered to witness the historic event. CBS News correspondent Bob Schieffer remarked, “The star of this show is the wide shot.” Nothing else could capture the multitude stretching from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol.

Scripture gives us a glimpse of an even larger throng, united by their faith in Jesus Christ: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation . . . that you may declare the praises of him
who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 PETER 2:9).

This is not an image of the privileged few, but of the ransomed many from “every tribe and language and people and nation” (REVELATION 5:9). Today we are scattered across the globe, where many feel isolated and suffer for their allegiance to Jesus. But through the lens of God’s Word we see the wide shot of our brothers and sisters in faith standing together to honor the One who redeemed us and made us His own.

대단한 일

한 친척이 12월 방세를 낼 수 없어 도움이 필요했습니다. 예상치 못한 지출이 많이 생기는 연말이라서 친척들은 더욱 부담을 느꼈습니다. 그러나 친척들은 하나님의 채워주심에 감사하면서 각자 예금을 털어 그 친척을 도와주었는데, 그 친척으로부터 감사의 인사를 받았습니다.

그는 다음과 같은 고맙다는 말로 가득한 감사카드를 친척들에게 건네주었습니다. “또 해주셨군요......좋은 일을 하시면서 아마도 별로 대단한 일이 아닌 것처럼 해주시는군요.”

하지만 남을 돕는 일은 하나님께는 대단한 일입니다. 이사야 선지자는 이스라엘 민족에게 이 점을 분명하게 강조했습니다. 당시 백성들은 금식을 하면서도 여전히 서로 싸우고 다투고 있었습니다. 그에 대해 이사야가 이렇게 말했습니다. “흉악의 결박을 풀어주며 멍에의 줄을 끌러주며......또 주린 자에게 네 양식을 나누어 주며 유리하는 빈민을 집에 들이며 헐벗은 자를 보면 입히며 네 골육을 피하여 스스로 숨지 말라”(이사야 58:6-7).

이사야는 이같이 남을 돕는 희생은 하나님의 빛을 나누어줄 뿐 아니라 우리 자신의 상처도 치유해준다고 말했습니다(8절). 앞서 말한 친척을 도운 가족들도 그렇게 하면서 자신들의 재정 상태를 냉정하고 꼼꼼하게 검토하게 되어 한 해 동안의 가계를 잘 관리할 수 있는 방법을 알게 되었습니다. 남을 너그럽게 도울 때 하나님은 이렇게 약속하십니다. “네 공의가 네 앞에 행하고 여호와의 영광이 네 뒤에 호위하리니”(8절). 그 친척에게 베풀어줌으로써 결과적으로 그들은 더 큰 축복을 받게 되었습니다. 그럼, 하나님은요? 하나님은 사랑으로 이미 자신의 모든 것을 주셨습니다.

A Big Deal

A family member needed help with his December rent. To his family, the request felt like a burden—especially with their own unexpected expenses at year’s end. But they dug into their savings, grateful for God’s provision—and blessed by their relative’s gratitude.

He handed them a thank-you card filled with grateful words. “There you go again . . . doing nice things, probably passing it off as no big deal.”

Helping others is a big deal, however, to God. The prophet Isaiah made that point to the nation of Israel. The people were fasting but still quarreling and fighting. Instead, said Isaiah: “Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. . . . Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help” (ISAIAH 58:6–7 NLT ).

Such a sacrifice, said Isaiah, shares God’s light but also heals our own brokenness (V 8). As the family helped their relative, they looked hard at their own finances, seeing ways they could manage better all year. This was God’s promise for being generous: “Your godliness will lead you forward, and the glory of the LORD will protect you from behind” (V 8 NLT ). In the end, giving to their kin blessed them more. And God? He already gave His all—with love. - PATRICIA RAYBON

좋은 인상을 주려는 노력

대학의 한 수업에서 문화체험을 위해 견학을 갔을 때, 강사는 한 여학생을 거의 못 알아볼 뻔했습니다. 교실에서는 그 여학생이 늘 바지 밑으로 6인치(15센티미터) 높이의 하이힐을 신고 다녀서 작은 키를 감추고 있었는데, 운동화를 신으니 키가 5피트 (150센티미터)도 안 되었던 것입니다. 여학생은 웃으면서 말했습니다. “저는 하이힐을 신으면 제가 원하는 키가 되고, 운동화를 신으면 원래 키가 돼요.”

사람의 됨됨이를 결정하는 것은 외모가 아닙니다. 중요한 것은 우리의 마음입니다. 예수님은 외식하는 꾸밈의 달인이자 최고로 종교적인 “바리새인들과 율법사들”에게 강한 어투로 말씀하셨습니다. 그들이 왜 주님의 제자들은 종교적인 전통에 따라 식사 전에 손을 씻지 않느냐고 묻자(마태복음 15:1-2), 예수님은 “너희는 어찌하여 너희의 전통으로 하나님의 계명을 범하느냐”(3절) 고 되물으셨습니다. 그러시고는 부모를 돌보는 대신 자신들의 부를 축적하기 위해 법적으로 빠져나갈 구멍을 만들었다고 지적하시면서(4-6절), 주님은 그들에게 수치를 느끼게 하고 부모를 공경하라는 제5계명을 범했다고 책망하셨습니다(출애굽기 20:12).

만일 우리가 외식하는 일에 집착하면서 하나님의 명백한 계명에서 빠져나갈 구멍을 찾고 있다면, 그것은 하나님의 율법정신을 위반하는 것입니다. 예수님은 “마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각과 살인과 간음과 음란”과 같은 것들이라고 말씀하셨습니다(마태복음 15:19). 오직 하나님만이 그분의 아들 예수님의 의로움을 통해 우리에게 깨끗한 마음을 주실 수 있습니다.

우리의 동기가 겉으로 남에게 좋은 인상을 주기 위한 것이라면, 우리는 하나님께 좋은 인상을 드리지 못한다.

Trying to Impress

When a college class went on a cultural field trip, the instructor almost didn’t recognize one of his star pupils. In the classroom she had concealed six-inch heels beneath her pant legs. But in her walking boots she was less than five feet tall. “My heels are how I want to be,” she laughed. “But my boots are how I really am.”

Our physical appearance doesn’t define who we are; it’s our heart that matters. Jesus had strong words for those masters of appearances—the super-religious “Pharisees and teachers of the law.” They asked Jesus why His disciples didn’t wash their hands before eating, as their religious traditions dictated (MATTHEW 15:1–2). Jesus asked, “Why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?” (V 3). Then He pointed out how they had invented a legal loophole to keep their wealth instead of caring for their parents (VV 4–6), thus dishonoring them and violating the fifth commandment (EXODUS 20:12).

If we obsess over appearances while looking for loopholes in God’s clear commands, we’re violating the spirit of His law. Jesus said that “out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality,” and the like (MATTHEW 15:19). Only God, through the righteousness of His Son Jesus, can give us a clean heart. - TIM GUSTAFSON

언제나 하나님의 자녀

부모님과 함께 예배에 참석했을 때, 늘 하듯이 옆의 사람과 함께 손을 잡고 주기도문을 외웠습니다. 한손은 엄마의 손, 다른 한손은 아빠의 손을 잡고 서 있으려니, 문득 나는 언제까지나 우리 부모님의 딸이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 지금은 분명 중년의 나이가 되었음에도 여전히 나는 “레오와 필리스의 아이”입니다. 나는 우리 부모님의 딸일 뿐 아니라 언제나 하나님의 자녀라는 사실을 묵상해보았습니다.

바울 사도는 로마 교회의 성도들이 하나님의 가족으로 입양되었다는 사실에 자신들의 존재감이 있다는 것을 알기 원했습니다(로마서 8:15). 그들은 성령으로 거듭났기에(14절) 더 이상 진정 중요치 않은 일에 얽매어 노예로 살 필요가 없었습니다. 그들은 이제 성령의 은사를 힘입어 당당히 “하나님의 상속자요 그리스도와 함께 한 상속자”(17절)였던 것입니다.

그리스도를 따르는 자들에게 이것이 무슨 영향을 미칠까요? 한마디로, 모든 면에 영향을 미칩니다! 하나님의 자녀라는 우리의 정체성은 우리자신과 세계를 보는 바탕과 관점을 형성해줍니다. 예를 들어, 우리가 하나님의 가족이라는 사실을 알게 되면 주님을 따르면서 이전부터 익숙했던 편안함을 버리기 쉬워집니다. 뿐만 아니라 남에게 인정받기를 원하는 마음으로부터도 자유로울 수 있습니다.

오늘, 하나님의 자녀가 된다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 깊이 생각해보시지 않겠습니까?

Always a Child of God

During a church service I attended with my parents, according to the usual practice we held hands while saying the Lord’s Prayer together. As I stood with one hand clasped to my mother’s and the other to my father’s, I was struck by the thought that I will always be their daughter. Although I’m firmly in my middle age, I can still be called “the child of Leo and Phyllis.” I reflected that not only am I their daughter, but I will also always be a child of God.

The apostle Paul wanted the people in the church at Rome to understand that their identity was based on being adopted members of God’s family (ROMANS 8:15). Because they had been born of the Spirit (V 14), no longer did they need to be enslaved to things that didn’t really matter. Rather, through the gift of the Spirit, they were “heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (V 17).

To those who follow Christ, what difference does this make? Quite simply, everything! Our identity as children of God provides our foundation and shapes how we see ourselves and the world. For instance, knowing that we are part of God’s family helps us to step out of our comfort zone as we follow Him. We can also be free from seeking the approval of others.

창조물의 노래

과학자들은 음향 천문학을 사용하면서 우주의 소리와 파동을 관찰하고 들을 수 있게 되었습니다. 그래서 별들이 신비스러운 밤하늘에서 궤도를 따라 조용히 도는 것이 아니라, 오히려 음악을 생성해낸다는 사실을 알아냈습니다. 혹등고래에서 나오는 소리처럼, 별들의 공명은 인간의 귀에 들리지 않는 파장이나 주파수로 존재합니다. 그러나 별, 고래, 그밖의 다른 창조물들의 소리는 함께 연합하여 하나님의 위대하심을 선포하는 멋진 교향곡을 만들어냅니다.

시편 19:1-4은 이렇게 말합니다. “하늘이 하나님의 영광을 선포하고 궁창이 그의 손으로 하신 일을 나타내는도다 날은 날에게 말하고 밤은 밤에게 지식을 전하니 언어도 없고 말씀도 없으며 들리는 소리도 없으나 그의 소리가 온 땅에 통하고 그의 말씀이 세상 끝까지 이르도다.”

신약 성경에서 바울 사도는 예수님 안에서 “만물이 그에게서 창조되되 하늘과 땅에서 보이는 것들과 보이지 않는 것들과......다 그로 말미암고 그를 위하여 창조되었다”(골로새서 1:16)라고 밝히고 있습니다. 그에 상응하여 자연 세계의 높은 산이나 깊은 바다도 창조주를 향하여 노래하고 있습니다. 창조물들과 함께 우리도 “뼘으로 [방대한] 하늘을 재신”(이사야 40:12) 하나님의 위대하심을 소리 높여 노래할 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Creation’s Song

Using acoustic astronomy, scientists can observe and listen to the sounds and pulses of space. They’ve found that stars don’t orbit in silence in the mysterious night sky, but rather generate music. Like humpback whale sounds, the resonance of stars exists at wavelengths or frequencies that may not be heard by the human ear. Yet, the music of stars and whales and other creatures combine to create a symphony that proclaims the greatness of God.

Psalm 19:1–4 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”

In the New Testament, the apostle Paul reveals that in Jesus “all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible . . . all things have been created through him and for him” (COLOSSIANS 1:16). In response, the natural world’s heights and depths sing to its Maker. May we join creation and sing out the greatness of the One who “with the breadth of his hand marked off the [vast] heavens” (ISAIAH 40:12). - REMI OYEDELE
