밀쳐놓고 나아가라

라디오 방송을 하는 친구가 해준 지혜로운 조언이 생각납니다. 그가 일을 시작했을 때 비난과 칭찬을 어떻게 다루어야 할지 몰라 힘들어 했는데, 하나님이 비난과 칭찬 모두를 마음 한 구석에 밀쳐놓으라고 권면하신다는 것을 느꼈다고 했습니다. 그가 마음에 새긴 지침의 본질은 무엇이었을까요? 그것은 ‘비난으로부터 배울 것은 배우고 칭찬은 받아들여라. 그런 다음 둘 다 마음 한 구석으로 밀쳐놓고 하나님의 은혜와 능력 안에서 겸손하게 앞으로 나아가라’는 것입니다.

비판이나 칭찬을 받으면 감정이 심하게 흔들리며, 이것을 그대로 두면 자기혐오나 지나친 자부심으로 변할 수 있습니다. 잠언에서 우리는 격려와 지혜로운 조언이 가져다주는 유익들을 봅니다. “좋은 기별은 뼈를 윤택하게 하느니라...… 훈계 받기를 싫어하는 자는 자기의 영혼을 경히 여김이라 견책을 달게 받는 자는 지식을 얻느니라”(잠언 15:30,32).

우리가 비난을 받을 입장에 있다면 그 비난을 통해 다듬어지고자 하는 자세를 갖게 되기를 바랍니다. 잠언서는 “생명의 경계를 듣는 귀는 지혜로운 자 가운데에 있느니라”(31절)라고 분명히 말합니다. 그리고 복이 있어 칭찬의 말을 들으면 새 힘을 얻고 감사하는 마음을 갖기를 바랍니다. 우리가 겸손히 하나님과 동행하면 하나님은 칭찬과 비난을 통해 배우게 하시고, 그것들을 밀쳐주시고, 그런 다음 그분 안에서 앞으로 나아갈 수 있게 도와주십니다(33절).

Shelve Them and Move On

I’m reminded of some wise advice a radio broadcaster friend once gave me. Early on in his career, as my friend struggled to know how to deal with both criticism and praise, he felt that God was encouraging him to shelve both. What’s the essence of what he took to heart? Learn what you can from criticism and accept praise. Then shelve both and humbly move on in God’s grace and power.

Criticism and praise stir in us powerful emotions that, if left unchecked, can lead to either self-loathing or an overinflated ego. In Proverbs we read of the benefits of encouragement and wise counsel: “Good news gives health to the bones. . . . Those who disregard discipline despise themselves, but the one who heeds correction gains understanding” (15:30, 32).

If we’re on the receiving end of a rebuke, may we choose to be sharpened by it. Proverbs states, “Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise” (V 31). And if we’re blessed with words of praise, may we be refreshed and filled with gratitude. As we walk humbly with God, He can help us learn from both criticism and praise, shelve them, and then move on in Him (V 33). - RUTH O'REILLY-SMITH

기도와 성장

내 친구 데이비드의 아내가 알츠하이머병에 걸려 삶에 변화가 생기자 친구가 많이 괴로워했습니다. 그는 아내를 돌보기 위해 조기 퇴직을 해야 했고, 병이 악화되면서 아내를 점점 더 많이 돌봐주어야 했습니다.

그는 말했습니다. “난 하나님께 너무 화가 났었어. 그런데 이 일을 두고 기도를 하면 할수록 하나님이 내 마음을 더 보게 하시고 우리의 결혼생활 대부분 내가 얼마나 이기적이었는지를 보여주셨지.” 이렇게 고백하는 그의 눈에는 눈물이 고였습니다. “아내의 병이 10년 간 계속되었지만 하나님께서 모든 것을 달리 볼 수 있게 도와주셨어. 이제 내가 아내를 사랑해서 하는 모든 것은 또한 예수님을 위해 하는 거야. 아내를 돌보는 것이 내 삶의 가장
큰 특권이 되었어.”

때때로 하나님은 우리의 기도에 응답하실 때 우리가 원하는 것을 주시지 않고 변화하라고 어려움을 주실 때가 있습니다. 요나 선지자가 하나님이 악한 니느웨 도시를 멸망시키지 않으신 것 때문에 화를 내자 하나님은 작은 나무 하나로 그에게 그늘을 드리워 뜨거운 햇볕을 막게 하셨다가(요나 4:6) 곧 그것을 시들게 하셨습니다. 이에 요나가 불평하자 하나님이 이렇게 응대하셨습니다. “박 넝쿨이 죽었다고 네가 이렇게 화를 내는 것이 옳으냐?”(7-9절, 새번역). 요나는 자기 입장만 내세우며 자신이 옳다고 주장했습니다. 그러나 하나님은 요나에게 다른 사람들을 생각하고 동정심을 가지라고 하셨습니다.

하나님은 때때로 우리가 배우고 성장하도록 우리의 기도를 의외의 방법으로 사용하십니다. 우리는 그로 인한 변화를 열린 마음으로 기꺼이 받아들여야 합니다. 왜냐하면 하나님은 그분의 사랑으로 우리를 변화시키려 하시기 때문입니다.

Praying and Growing

When my friend David’s wife developed Alzheimer’s disease, the changes it brought to his life made him bitter. He needed to retire early to care for her; and as the disease progressed, she required increasingly more care.

“I was so angry at God,” he told me. “But the more I prayed about it, the more He showed me my heart and how I had been selfish for most of our marriage.” Tears welled in his eyes as he confessed, “She’s been sick ten years, but God has helped me see things differently. Now, everything I do out of love for her, I also do for Jesus. Caring for her has become the greatest privilege of my life.”

Sometimes God answers our prayers not by giving us what we want but by challenging us to change. When the prophet Jonah was angry because God spared the wicked city of Nineveh from destruction, God caused a plant to shade him from the hot sun (JONAH 4:6). Then He made it wither. When Jonah complained, God answered, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” (VV 7–9). Jonah, focused only on himself, insisted it was. But God challenged him to think about others and have compassion.

God sometimes uses our prayers in unexpected ways to help us learn and grow. It’s a change we can welcome with open hearts because He wants to transform us with His love. - JAMES BANKS

격려하는 분위기

나는 집 근처에 있는 헬스장에 갈 때마다 격려를 받습니다. 그 붐비는 곳에는 신체 건강과 체력을 키우기 위해 열심히 노력하는 사람들로 가득합니다. 알림 게시판에는 서로를 판단하지 말되, 다른 사람들의 몸매 훈련에 도움이 되는 말과 행동은 언제나 환영한다고 쓰여 있습니다.

이것은 삶의 영적 영역에서도 어떤 관점을 가져야 하는지를 말해주는 아주 훌륭한 사례입니다! 우리는 영적으로 “멋진 몸매를 가꾸기” 위해, 곧 믿음 안에서 성장하기 위해 열심히 노력하면서, 때로는 다른 사람처럼 예수님과 동행할 만큼 영적으로 성숙하지 못하고 영적으로 건강한 축에 들지 못한다고 느낄 때가 있습니다.

바울은 우리에게 “피차 권면하고 서로 덕을 세우라”(데살로니가전서 5:11)고 짧고 확실하게 말했습니다. 그리고 로마의 성도들에게도 “우리 각 사람이 이웃을 기쁘게 하되 선을 이루고 덕을 세우도록 할지니라”(로마서 15:2)라고 썼습니다. 우리 하나님이 우리에게 사랑으로 은혜를 베푸신 것을 깨닫고 우리도 격려의 말과 행동으로 다른 사람들에게 하나님의 은혜를 보여줍시다.

우리도 “서로 받아들이면서”(7절) 우리의 영적 성장을 하나님께, 성령의 역사에 맡깁시다. 그리고 날마다 주님을 힘써 따르는 삶을 살면서, 주님 안의 형제자매들이 믿음의 성장을 위해 노력할 때 그들을 격려해주는 분위기를 만드는 우리가 되기를 바랍니다.

Atmosphere of Encouragement

I’m encouraged every time I visit the fitness center near our house. In that busy place, I’m surrounded by others who are striving to improve their physical health and strength. Posted signs remind us not to judge each other, but words and actions that reveal support for others’ conditioning efforts are always welcomed.

What a great picture of how things should look in the spiritual realm of life! Those of us who are striving to “get in shape” spiritually, to grow in our faith, can sometimes feel as if we don’t belong because we’re not as spiritually fit—as mature in our walk with Jesus—as someone else.

Paul gave us this short, direct suggestion: “Encourage one another and build each other up” (1 THESSALONIANS 5:11). And to the believers in Rome he wrote: “Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up” (ROMANS 15:2). Recognizing that our Father is so lovingly gracious with us, let’s show God’s grace to others with encouraging words and actions.

As we “accept one another” (V 7), let’s entrust our spiritual growth to God—to the work of His Spirit. And while we daily seek to follow Him, may we create an atmosphere of encouragement for our brothers and sisters in Jesus as they also seek to grow in their faith. - DAVE BRANON

친절한 행위

“에스테라, 우리 친구 헬렌이 네 선물을 보내왔네!” 퇴근해 집에 도착한 엄마가 나에게 말했습니다. 우리는 별로 풍족하지 않은 가운데 자랐기 때문에 우편으로 선물을 받으니 또 다른 크리스마스 같았습니다. 나는 이 멋있는
여성을 통해 하나님이 나를 사랑하시고 기억하시며 귀하게 여기신다는 것을 느꼈습니다.

다비다(도르가)가 만든 옷을 받았던 가난한 과부들도 분명 그와 같은 느낌을 가졌을 것입니다. 다비다는 욥바에 사는 예수님의 제자였는데 친절한 행위로 그 지역에 잘 알려져 있었습니다. 그녀는 “착한 일과 구제사업을 많이 하는 사람이었습니다” (사도행전 9:36, 새번역). 그러던 그녀가 병이 들어 죽었습니다. 그 무렵 베드로가 가까운 도시에 와 있었기 때문에 성도 두 사람이 그를 쫓아가 욥바에 와 달라고 간청했습니다.

베드로가 도착하자 다비다가 도와주었던 과부들이 다비다의 친절을 보여주는 증거들로 “[도르가가] 지은 속옷과 겉옷”(39절)을 보여주었습니다. 과부들이 베드로에게 기도해달라고 요청했는지는 알 수 없습니다. 그러나 베드로가 성령에 이끌려 기도하자 하나님이 그녀를 다시 살려주셨습니다! 하나님이 그분의 자비를 나타내시자 그 결과 “그 일이 온 욥바에 알려지니, 많은 사람이 주님을 믿게 되었습니다” (42절, 새번역).

우리가 주위 사람들을 친절히 대할 때 그들의 생각이 하나님께로 향하고 하나님이 그들을 귀하게 여기시는 것을 느낄 수 있기를 기도합니다.

Acts of Kindness

“Estera, you got a present from our friend Helen!” my mom told me when she got home from work. Growing up we didn’t have much, so receiving a present in the mail was like a second Christmas. I felt loved, remembered, and valued by God through this wonderful woman.

The poor widows Tabitha (Dorcas) made clothes for must have felt the same way. She was a disciple of Jesus living in Joppa who was well known in the community for her acts of kindness. She was “always doing good and helping the poor” (ACTS 9:36). Then she got sick and passed away. At the time, Peter was visiting a nearby city, so two believers went after him and begged him to come to Joppa.

When Peter arrived, the widows Tabitha had helped showed him the evidence of her kindness—“the robes and other clothing that [she] had made” (V 39). We don’t know if they asked him to intervene, but led by the Holy Spirit Peter prayed and God brought her back to life! The result of God’s kindness was that “this became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord” (V 42).

은혜 속에 깊이 들어가기

1964년 1월 8일, 17세의 랜디 가드너는 마침내 지난 11 일 하고도 25분 동안 참았던 것을 했습니다. 깜빡 졸며 잠이 들었던 것입니다. 그는 인간이 얼마나 오래 깨어있을 수 있는지 기네스북 세계기록을 경신하고 싶었습니다.
가드너는 청량음료를 마시고 농구를 하고 볼링을 하면서 일주일 반 동안 잠을 떨쳐냈습니다. 마지막 그가 무너지기 전에 미각과 후각, 청각에 문제가 생겼습니다. 그 후 수십 년이 지나서 가드너는 심한 불면증에 시달렸습니다. 그는 기록은 세웠지만 수면이 반드시 필요하다는 명백한 사실 또한 증명해주었습니다.

많은 사람들이 숙면을 취하는데 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 의도적으로 잠을 자지 않은 가드너와 달리 우리는 산더미 같은 걱정거리를 포함한 여러 가지 이유 때문에 불면증에 시달리기도 합니다. 꼭 해내야 하는 것들에서
오는 두려움, 남들의 기대치에 대한 두려움, 질주하는 생활 템포에서 오는 고통 등이 그런 것들입니다. 때로는 두려운 마음을 달래고 편한 마음을 가지는 것 자체가 어렵기도 합니다.

시편 기자는 “여호와께서 집을 세우지 아니하시면” 우리의 수고는 헛된 것이라고 말합니다(시편 127:1). 우리의 “수고”나 끊임없이 기울이는 노력도 하나님이 우리의 필요를 공급하시지 않으면 소용이 없습니다. 하지만 감사하게도 하나님은 우리의 필요를 공급해주시고, “그의 사랑하시는 자에게는 잠을 주십니다”(2절). 그리고 하나님의 사랑은 우리 모두에게까지 이어집니다. 하나님은 우리의 염려를 그분께 내려놓고 그분의 안식과 은혜 속에 깊이 들어오라고 권유하십니다.

Sinking into Grace

Finally, on January 8, 1964, seventeen-year-old Randy Gardner did something he hadn’t done for eleven days and twenty-five minutes: he nodded off to sleep. He wanted to beat the Guinness Book World Record for how long a human could stay awake. By drinking soft drinks and hitting the basketball court and bowling alley, Gardner rebuffed sleep for a week and a half. Before finally collapsing, his sense of taste, smell, and hearing went haywire. Decades later, Gardner suffered from severe bouts of insomnia. He set the record but also confirmed the obvious: sleep is essential.

Many of us struggle to get a decent night’s rest. Unlike Gardner who deprived himself intentionally, we might suffer sleeplessness for a number of reasons—including a mountain of anxieties: the fear of all we need to accomplish, the dread of others’ expectations, the distress of living at a frantic pace. Sometimes it’s hard for us to turn off the fear and relax.

The psalmist tells us that “unless the LORD builds the house,” we labor in vain (PSALM 127:1). Our “toiling” and our relentless efforts are useless unless God provides what we need. Thankfully, God does provide what we need. He “grants sleep to those he loves” (V 2). And God’s love extends to all of us. He invites us to release our anxieties to Him and sink into His rest, into His grace. - WINN COLLIER

정황을 벗어나

비행기를 타려고 줄을 서 있는데 누가 내 어깨를 두드렸습니다. 돌아보니 어떤 사람이 다정하게 인사를 했습니다. “엘리사! 나 기억해? 나 조운이야!” 속으로 내가 알았던 여러 명의 “조운” 들을 훑어보았지만 그녀가 누구인지 생각나지 않았습니다. 전에 이웃에 살던 사람이었나? 옛 직장동료? 이것 참...... 도무지 생각이 나지 않았습니다.

내가 애쓰는 걸 알아차린 조운이 말했습니다. “엘리사, 우리 고등학교 때 서로 알았잖아.” 풋볼 경기가 열리던 금요일 밤 관중석에서 응원을 하던 기억이 떠올랐습니다. 그때의 정황이 살아나자 조운을 알아볼 수 있었습니다.

예수님이 돌아가신 후 이른 아침에 무덤에 간 막달라 마리아는 돌이 치워져 있고 주님의 몸도 사라진 것을 알게 되었습니다 (요한복음 20:1-2). 그녀는 달려가서 베드로와 요한을 데리고 왔는데, 그들도 무덤이 비어있는 것을 보았습니다(3-10절). 마리아가 슬픔에 싸여 무덤 밖에서 서성거리고 있을 때(11절), 예수님이 거기에 나타나셨지만 “마리아는 그분이 예수님인 것을 몰랐습니다”(14절, 현대인의 성경). 그가 동산지기인 줄 생각했기 때문입니다(15절).

그녀는 어떻게 예수님을 알아보지 못했을까요? 부활하신 주님의 몸이 너무 변하여 주님을 알아보기 어려웠던 것일까요? 너무 슬픈 나머지 그분의 정체가 가려졌던 것일까요? 아니면 어쩌면 나의 경우처럼, 예수님이 무덤에서 죽은 상태로 있지 않고 “정황을 벗어나” 동산에서 살아계셨기에 주님을 알아보지 못했던 것일까요?

우리가 기도할 때나 성경을 읽을 때, 아니면 단순히 우리 마음속에 작은 소리로 속삭이며 예수님이 우리를 찾아오실 때, 우리 역시 주님을 모르고 놓쳐버릴 수 있지 않을까요?

Out of Context

As I queued up to board my flight, someone tapped my shoulder. I turned and received a warm greeting. “Elisa! Do you remember me? It’s Joan!” My mind flipped through various “Joans” I’d known, but I couldn’t place her. Was she a previous neighbor? A past coworker? Oh dear . . . I didn’t know.

Sensing my struggle, Joan responded, “Elisa, we knew each other in high school.” A memory rose: Friday night football games, cheering from the stands. Once the context was clarified, I recognized Joan.

After Jesus’s death, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early in the morning and found the stone rolled away and His body gone (JOHN 20:1–2). She ran to get Peter and John, who returned with her to find the tomb empty (VV 3–10). But Mary lingered outside in her grief (V 11). When Jesus appeared there, “she did not realize that it was Jesus” (V 14), thinking He was the gardener (V 15).

How could she have not recognized Jesus? Was His resurrected body so changed that it was difficult to recognize Him? Did her grief blind her to His identity? Or, perhaps, like me, was it because Jesus was “out of context,” alive in the garden instead of dead in the tomb, that she didn’t recognize Him?

How might we too miss Jesus when He comes into our days—during prayer or Bible reading, or by simply whispering in our hearts? - ELISA MORGAN

지축을 흔드는 폭음과 함께 포탄이 주위에 떨어지는 그 시간, 한 젊은 병사가 이렇게 간절히 기도했습니다. “주님, 저를 여기서 구해주신다면 어머니가 그렇게 원하셨던 그 성경학교에 가겠습니다.” 하나님은 그의 결연한 기도를 귀하게 받아주셨습니다. 그래서 우리 아버지는 제2차 세계대전에서 살아남아 무디 성경학교에 갔고, 일생을 목회에 헌신하셨습니다.

또 한 전사도 그를 하나님께로 이끌었던 다른 종류의 위기를 겪고 있었습니다. 그런데 그의 경우, 문제는 그가 전투를 ‘회피했을’ 때 일어났습니다. 다윗 왕의 군대가 암몬 족속과 싸우고 있을 때 다윗은 궁전에서 다른 남자의
아내에게 계속 눈길을 주고 있었습니다 (사무엘하 11장 참조). 시편 39편에서 다윗은 그로 인한 끔찍한 죄로부터 회복되는 고통의 과정을 차례대로 기록하고 있습니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “내 고통이 한층 더하는구나...... 생각할수록 속이 답답하고 불이 붙는 것 같아” (2-3절, 현대인의 성경).

다윗의 상한 영혼은 이렇게 고백합니다. “여호와여 나의 종말과 연한이 언제까지인지 알게 하사 내가 나의 연약함을 알게 하소서”(4절). 새로운 시각을 가진 다윗은 절망하지 않았습니다. 그에게는 달리 의지할 곳이 없었습니다. “주여 이제 내가 무엇을 바라리요 나의 소망은 주께 있나이다”(7절). 다윗은 이러한 자신과의 싸움에서 살아남아 계속해서 하나님을 섬겼습니다.

우리가 무엇 때문에 기도생활을 하느냐는 것보다 어디에 초점을 두고 기도하느냐가 더 중요합니다. ‘하나님’은 우리의 소망의 근원입니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분과 우리의 마음을 나누기를 원하십니다.

The Battle

As artillery rounds fell around him with an earth-shaking whoomp , the young soldier prayed fervently, “Lord, if you get me through this, I’ll go to that Bible school Mom wanted me to attend.” God honored his focused prayer. My dad survived World War II, went to Moody Bible Institute, and invested his life in ministry.

Another warrior endured a different kind of crisis that drove him to God, but his problems arose when he avoided combat. As King David’s troops fought the Ammonites, David was back at his palace casting more than just a glance at another man’s wife (SEE 2 SAMUEL 11). In Psalm 39, David chronicles the painful process of restoration from the terrible sin that resulted. “The turmoil within me grew worse,” he wrote. “The more I thought about it, the hotter I got” (VV 2–3 NLT ).

David’s broken spirit caused him to reflect: “Show me, LORD , my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is” (V 4). Amid his renewed focus, David didn’t despair. He had nowhere else to turn. “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you” (V 7). David would survive this personal battle and go on to serve God.

What motivates our prayer life doesn’t matter as much as the focus of our prayer. God is our source of hope. He wants us to share our heart with Him. - TIM GUSTAFSON

보고 계시는 하나님

처음으로 안경을 썼을 때 세상이 아주 선명하게 보였습니다. 나의 눈은 가까이 있는 물체만 뚜렷하고 분명하게 보이는 근시입니다. 안경이 없으면 방 건너편에 있는 것이나 멀리 있는 것들은 흐릿하게 보입니다. 나는 열두 살 때 처음으로 안경을 썼는데, 칠판의 선명한 글씨와 나무에 매달려있는 작은 잎사귀들, 그리고 아마도 가장 중요한 것은 환하게 미소 짓는 얼굴을 볼 수 있어 아주 놀랐습니다.

내가 친구들에게 인사를 하면 친구들이 미소로 답하는 것을 보고, 내가 다른 사람들을 보는 것이 축복인 것처럼 남이 나를 보는 것도 큰 선물이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

노예였던 하갈은 매정한 주인 사라를 피해 도망쳤을 때 그 사실을 깨달았습니다. 혼자서 임신한 몸을 이끌고 누구 하나 도와주는 사람도 희망도 없이 사막으로 도망쳤을 때 하갈은 그녀의 세계에서 “아무것도 아닌 사람”이었습니다. 그러나 하나님께 보였을 때 그녀는 돌이켜 하나님을 볼 수 있는 힘을 얻었습니다. 그녀에게 하나님은 더 이상 모호한 개념이 아닌 실제적인 분이 되었고, 너무나 실제적이어서 하나님을 ‘엘 로이’, 곧 “나를 살피시는 하나님”이라고 불렀습니다. 하갈은 “나는 여기서 나를 살피시는 하나님을 뵈었다”(창세기 16:13)라고 말했습니다.

보시는 우리 하나님은 우리 한 사람 한 사람도 또한 보고 계십니다. 아무도 자신을 보지 않는다고, 혼자라고, 혹은 아무것도 아닌 존재 같다고 느끼십니까? 하나님은 당신을, 그리고 당신의 미래를 보고 계십니다. 그에 대한 반응으로 우리도 하나님 안에서 우리의 오늘과 미래에 대한 영원한 희망과 격려와 구원과 기쁨을 볼 수 있기를 바랍니다. 오늘 참되시고 살아 계신 유일하신 하나님을 볼 수 있는 이 놀라운 선물을 주신 하나님께 찬양 드립시다.

Seen by God

My first pair of eyeglasses opened my eyes to a bold world. I’m nearsighted, meaning objects close up are sharp and defined. Without my glasses, however, items across a room or in the distance are a blur. At age twelve, with my first pair of eyeglasses, I was shocked to see clearer words on blackboards, tiny leaves on trees and, perhaps most important, big smiles on faces.

As friends smiled back when I greeted them, I learned that to be seen was as great a gift as the blessing of seeing.

The slave Hagar realized that as she fled from her mistress Sarai’s unkindness. Hagar was a “nobody” in her culture, pregnant and alone, fleeing to a desert without help or hope. Seen by God, however, she was empowered, in return, to see Him. No longer a vague concept, God became real to her, so real that she gave God a name, El Roi, which means “You are the God who sees me.” She said, “I have now seen the One who sees me” (GENESIS 16:13).

Our seeing God sees each of us too. Feeling unseen, alone, or like a nobody? God sees you and your future. In return, may we see in Him our ever-present hope, encouragement, salvation, and joy—both for today and for our future. Praise Him today for this gift of amazing sight, to see the one true and Living God. - PATRICIA RAYBON

공로 인정하기

1960년대 초에 엄청 크고 슬픈 눈을 가진 사람이나 동물을 그린 특이한 그림들이 인기를 끌었습니다. 그런 작품들을 두고 “저질”이라느니 조잡하다고 여기는 사람들이 있었는가 하면, 보고 즐거워하는 사람들도 있었습니다. 그 화가의 남편이 아내의 작품을 홍보하기 시작하면서 그들은 큰 부자가 되었습니다. 그러나 작품에는 작가인 마가렛 킨의 서명이 없었고, 대신 마가렛의 남편이 아내의 작품을 자신의 것인 양 발표했습니다. 마가렛은 결혼생활이 파국에 이를 때까지 20년 동안 그 기만행위에 대해 두려운 마음으로 침묵을 지켰습니다. 결국 진짜 화가를 가리기 위해 법정에서 두 사람 사이에 “페인트칠을 걷어내는” 진실공방을 해야 했습니다.

그 남자의 기만은 분명 잘못된 것이었습니다. 그러나 예수님을 따르는 우리마저도 우리가 가진 재능이나 우리가 보여주는 리더십, 그리고 다른 사람에게 베푸는 친절한 행위까지 쉽게 우리의 공적으로 돌립니다. 하지만 그런 자질들은 오직 하나님의 은혜로만 가능합니다. 예레미야 9장에서 선지자는 백성들이 겸손하지 못하고 회개하는 마음이 없음을 한탄하고 있습니다. 선지자는 주님이 우리의 지혜나 힘, 부귀를 자랑하지 말고 오직 “사랑과 정의와 공의를 땅에 행하는”(24절) ‘그분’이 바로 주님이라는 것을 이해하고 알아야 한다고 하신 말씀을 기록하고 있습니다.

진정한 ‘화가’가 누구신지를 깨닫게 될 때 우리의 마음은 감사함으로 채워집니다. “온갖 좋은 은사와 온전한 선물이......아버지께로부터 내려오나니”(야고보서 1:17). 모든 공로와 찬사는 좋은 선물을 주시는 주님의 것입니다.

Giving Credit

In the early 1960s, some unusual paintings featuring a person or animal with huge, sad eyes became popular. Some considered the work “kitschy”—or tacky—but others delighted in it. As the artist’s husband began to promote his wife’s creations, the couple grew quite prosperous. But the artist’s signature—Margaret Keane—didn’t appear on her work. Instead, Margaret’s husband presented his wife’s work as his own. Margaret fearfully remained silent about the fraud for twenty years until the couple’s marriage ended. It took a courtroom “paint-off” between them to prove the true artist’s identity.

The man’s deception was clearly wrong, but even as followers of Jesus, we may find it easy to take credit for talents we possess, leadership skills we display, or even for our kind deeds to others. But those qualities are possible only because of God’s grace. In Jeremiah 9, we find the prophet lamenting the lack of humility and the unrepentant hearts of the people. He wrote that the Lord says we shouldn’t boast of our wisdom, our strength, or our riches, but only that we might understand and know that He is the Lord “who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth” (V 24).

Our hearts fill with gratitude as we realize the identity of the true Artist. “Every good and perfect gift is . . . from the Father” (JAMES 1:17). All of the credit, all of the praise belongs to the Giver of good gifts. - CINDY HESS KASPER

등을 켜고 살아가기

업무 차 동료 직원과 함께 250마일(약 400킬로미터) 떨어진 곳에 출장을 갔다가 늦은 시간이 되어서야 집으로 출발했습니다. 노화되어 가는 몸과 시력 때문에 야간 운전이 다소 우려는 되었지만, 그럼에도 내가 먼저 운전하기로 했습니다. 나는 운전대를 단단히 잡고 희미하게 비치는 길을 집중해서 바라보았습니다. 운전을 하는 동안 뒤에 오는 차들이 나의 앞 도로 쪽을 비춰줄 때 더 잘 보인다는 것을 알았습니다. 드디어 동료가 자기 차 운전대를 잡자 내 마음이 한결 가벼워졌습니다. 바로 그때 그는 내가 줄곧 전조등을 켜지 않고 안개등만 켠 채 운전했다는 것을 알게 되었습니다!

시편 119편은 하나님의 말씀이 우리의 매일의 삶을 비춰주는 빛이라는 것을 잘 알았던 사람이 쓴 위대한 작품입니다(105절). 그러나 우리는 내가 고속도로에서 겪었던 불편한 밤 운전과 비슷한 상황을 맞을 때가 얼마나 많습니까? 우리는 하나님의 말씀의 빛을 사용하는 것을 잊어버리기 때문에 잘 보려고 불필요하게 긴장하거나, 때로는 가장 좋은 길에서 벗어나기도 합니다. 시편 119편은 우리에게 의식적으로 “전조등 스위치를 켜는 것”을 권면하고 있습니다. 그렇게 할 때 우리에게 어떤 일이 일어날까요? 우리는 깨끗해지는데 필요한 지혜를 얻고(9-11절) 먼 길로 돌아가지 않는 새로운 동기와 용기를 얻게 됩니다(101-102절). 그리고 등을 켜고 살아갈 때 다음과 같은 시편 기자의 찬양이 우리의 찬양이 될 것입니다. “내가 주의 법을 어찌 그리 사랑하는지요 내가
그것을 종일 작은 소리로 읊조리나이다”(97절).

Living with the Lights On

A work assignment had taken my coworker and me on a 250-mile journey, and it was late when we began our trip home. An aging body with aging eyes makes me a bit uneasy about nighttime driving; nevertheless, I opted to drive first. My hands gripped the steering wheel and my eyes gazed intently at dimly lit roads. While driving I found I could see better when lights from vehicles behind me beamed on the highway ahead. I was much relieved when my friend eventually took the wheel of his vehicle. That’s when he discovered I had been driving with fog lights and not the headlights!

Psalm 119 is the masterful composition of one who understood that God’s Word provides us with light for everyday living (V 105). Yet, how often do we find ourselves in situations similar to my uncomfortable night on the highway? We needlessly strain to see, and we sometimes stray from the best paths because we forget to use the light of God’s Word. Psalm 119 encourages us to be intentional about “hitting the light switch.” What happens when we do? We find wisdom for purity (VV 9–11); we discover fresh motivation and encouragement for avoiding detours (VV 101–102). And when we live with the lights on, the psalmist’s praise is likely to become our praise: “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (V 97). - ARTHUR JACKSON
