아름다운 슬픔

우에노 히데사부로는 1920년대에 도쿄 제국대학의 교수로 재직했습니다. 매일 오후 3시에 기차에서 내리면 그의 개 하치코가 그를 기다리고 있었습니다. 어느 날 우에노 교수는 수업 중에 뇌졸중으로 쓰러져 사망 했습니다. 그날 오후 그가 기차에서 내리지 않자 하치코는 얼마를 기다리다 집으로 돌아갔습니다. 하치코는 그 다음 날 오후 3시에 기차역으로 다시 왔습니다. 그리고 그 이후에도 이렇게 10년 동안 매일 같은 시간에 거기서 주인을 기다렸습니다. 하치코의 충성심은 많은 일본인들의 마음을 감동 시켰고, 그들은 하치코와 함께 앉아있기도 했습니다.

엘리사도 그의 스승 엘리야에게 이와 같이 충실했습니다. 엘리야가 떠날 것을 직감한 그 날 엘리사는 엘리야에게서 눈을 떼질 않았습니다. 그러자 불의 병거가 엘리야를 하늘로 데려갔습니다. 그 광경에 엘리사는 목이 매어 외쳤습니다. “내 아버지여! 내 아버지여! 이스라엘의 병거와 마병이여!” (열왕기하 2:12) 그는 요단강을 갈랐던 엘리야의 권능을 상징하는 엘리야의 겉옷을 집어 들고(8절) “엘리야의 하나님 여호와는 어디 계시나이까?”(14절) 라고 물었습니다. 그리고 엘리사가 물을 치니 그의 스승이 했던 것처럼 물이 갈라졌습니다. 참으로 슬프고도 아름다운 날이었습니다!

GOOD GRIEF

A man named Hidesaburō Ueno taught at Tokyo’s Imperial University in the 1920s. Every afternoon, he returned on the 3:00 p.m. train to find his dog, Hachiko, waiting for him. One day Professor Ueno suffered a stroke during class and died. When he didn’t get off the afternoon train, Hachiko lingered a while then went home. The dog returned the next day at 3:00, and the next day, and the day after that, for ten years. Hachiko’s loyalty touched the hearts of many Japanese, who came to sit with him.

Elisha was similarly committed to his master, Elijah. On the day Elisha knew he would lose him, Elisha refused to let him out of his sight. Then a chariot of fire whisked Elijah to heaven. Elisha choked out what he saw: “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” (2 KINGS 2:12). He picked up Elijah’s cloak, the symbol of the prophet’s power that had parted the Jordan moments earlier (V. 8), and asked, “Where now is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” (V. 14). He struck the water, which parted as it had for his master. What a bittersweet day!

Have you lost someone you love? No words can do justice to your pain. Every sob releases memories of the love you shared. You hurt deeply because you loved deeply. How bittersweet! Thank God for this beloved person, and for your capacity to love. Elisha picked up Elijah’s cloak. What might you do?

라이트 형제의 여동생

사람들은 1900년대 초 처음으로 비행기를 발명하고 제작해 비행에 성공한 라이트 형제 오빌과 윌버에 대해서는 대부분 잘 알고 있지만, 캐서린 라이트에 대해서는 별로 알지 못합니다. 그러나 캐서린은 오빠들이 성공적으로 비행기를 만드는데 있어 없어서는 안 될 중요한 사람 이었습니다. 오빠들이 수없이 많은 연구와 실험에 몰입하여 발명에 이르기까지 캐서린은 사랑하는 마음으로 조용히 그들을 도왔습니다. 오빠들의 수입원인 자전거 가게를 대신 운영했고, 오빌이 비행기 추락 사고를 당했을 때 교사직을 그만두고 그를 간호하여 건강을 회복시켰으며, 오빠들의 명성이 점점 자라가는 세세한 과정들을 끝없이 관리했습니다.

다른 이들을 돕는 일의 가치는 성경 말씀에서도 볼 수 있습니다. 한 예로 바울이 “여러 사람의 보호자”(로마서 16:2)라고 했던 뵈뵈가 있습니다. 바울 서신에서 동역자 부부로 소개된 브리스가와 아굴라도 바울이 전도 사역을 했던 교회를 섬겼으며 심지어 그를 위해 목숨까지 내놓았습니다(4절). 바울은 마가에 대해서도 “나의 일에 유익하니라”(디모데후서 4:11)라고 칭찬했습니다.

우리는 다른 사람들을 섬김으로 그리스도 안에서 참된 형제자매가 될 수 있습니다. 하나님의 계속되는 사역에는 뵈뵈, 그리고 우리와 같은 조력자가 필요합니다. 이들은 모두 하나님의 인도하심으로 이와 같이 섬기는 사람입니다. “겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고 각각 자기 일을 돌볼 뿐더러... 다른 사람들의 일을 돌보라”(빌립보서 2:3-4).

THE WRIGHT SISTER

Most people know about the Wright Brothers—Orville and Wilbur—who invented, built, and flew the first successful airplane in the early 1900s. But few know the name Katherine Wright. Yet in her brothers’ story of creating their flying machine, Katherine was essential to their success. While her brothers concentrated on the myriad details and experiments that led to their invention, Katherine chose to quietly and lovingly help them. She kept their bicycle shop going (the brothers’ source of income), left her teaching job to nurse Orville back to health after a plane crash, and managed the endless details of her brothers’ growing fame.

The value of the support of others is seen in Scripture as well. One example is Phoebe, mentioned by Paul as a “benefactor of many people” (ROMANS 16:2). And Priscilla and Aquila, a helpful couple presented in Paul’s writing, hosted churches where Paul ministered and even “risked their lives” for him (V. 4). Additionally, the apostle complimented Mark, saying he was “helpful to me in my ministry” (2 TIMOTHY 4:11).

We can be the right brothers and sisters in Christ by serving others. The ongoing work of God needs helpers like Phoebe—and us—guided by Him to serve this way: “In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but . . . to the interests of the others” (PHILIPPIANS 2:3-4).

우리의 죄를 잊으시는 하나님

줄리와 남편은 딸이 남의 상점에서 물건을 훔친다는 것을 알고 슬픔과 가책을 느꼈습니다. 그러나 하나님의 도우심으로 딸이 그 일을 후회하며 그들에게 왔을 때, 딸을 용서하고, 상점에 손해 배상을 하고 상담 치료를 받도록 도왔습니다. 이 일이 있고 몇 달이 지나 딸이 부모가 자신을 더 이상 믿지 않을 것 같다고 무심코 던진 말을 듣고, 줄리는 ‘그게 무슨 말이지?’하고 의아해했습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님께서 그 사건의 아픈 가시를 줄리의 마음에서 이미 제거해 주셨기 때문에 줄리는 딸의 그 사건이 금방 생각나지 않았던 것입니다. 줄리는 이미 과거에 집착하지 않기로 했고, 하나님께 딸을 용서할 수 있는 힘을 달라고 기도했기 때문입니다.

그 순간 줄리는 하나님이 그의 백성에게 주시는 사랑을 체험하며 그분의 선하심과 은혜를 맛보았습니다. 하나님은 백성들에게 “새 일을 행하실 것” 이므로 “이전 일을 기억하지 말라”고 말씀하셨습니다(이사야 43:18-19). 그뿐 아니라 “나 곧 나는 나를 위하여 네 허물을 도말하는 자니 네 죄를 기억하지 아니하리라”(25절)는 아름다운 선포를 하셨습니다. 하나님은 죄를 기억하실 수도 있지만 사랑과 자비 때문에 그렇게 하지 않으십니다. 우리가 회개할 때 하나님은 죄의 기록을 지우십니다.

우리가 지은 잘못은 용서받은 후에도 우리 자신과 다른 사람들의 삶에 부정적인 영향을 줄 수도 있습니다. 그러나 하나님은 그 잘못을 다시 우리에게 묻지 않으십니다. 하나님은 오직 자비와 은혜로 우리를 감싸주십니다.

FORGETTING OUR SINS

Julie and her husband felt sadness and regret when they learned that their daughter had been shoplifting. But with God’s help, when she came to them weighed down with sorrow, they forgave her—and they helped her make restitution and receive counseling. Some months after the revelation, when their daughter made an offhand comment about how they might not trust her anymore, Julie wondered, What does she mean? She didn’t immediately think about her daughter’s offense because God had removed the sting of it from her mind. She had decided not to dwell in the past but had asked God to help her forgive.

In that moment, God gave Julie a taste of His goodness and grace as she experienced the love He extends to His people. God told His people not to “dwell on the past” because He was “doing a new thing” (ISAIAH 43:18-19). He also made the beautiful declaration, “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more” (V. 25). God could choose to hold our sins against us, but because of His love and mercy, He doesn’t. When we repent, He wipes our record clean.

Although our forgiven wrongdoing may have a negative impact on our lives and that of others, God will never hold that offense against us. He will enfold us in His mercy and grace.

서로 용납하라

며칠 전 운전을 하다 신호 대기 중인 차 뒤에 서게 됐는데 그 차의 뒷 유리를 보니 밝은 색의 스티커에 굵은 글씨로 “초보 운전, 조금만 참아주세요.”라고 쓰여 있었습니다. 우리가 알고 있고 경험한 많은 난폭 운전의 사례들을 생각해볼 때 이 문구는 다른 운전자에게 인내심을 가져달라는 것을 일깨워줍니다.

나는 그 스티커를 보다가 문득 사람들도 “초보 부모”, “초보 성도” 라고 적은 문구를 붙이고 다니면 어떨까 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 만약 우리의 일상에서 마주치는 이웃이나 직장 동료, 혹은 어떤 다른 사람들이 지금 무슨 일을 겪고 있는지 알 수 있다면, 상대를 좀 더 참아줄 수 있고 나아가 그들의 어려움을 도와줄 수도 있지 않을까요?

우리는 하루를 바쁘게 보내면서 다른 사람들이 끼어드는 것을 피하려고 할 수가 있습니다. 그러나 예수님께서 사람들을 어떻게 대하셨는지 깊이 생각해 보면 그분은 서두르지 않으셨습니다. 사람들을 불쌍히 여기셨던 예수님은 마주하는 사람마다 시간을 들여 위로하고 가르치고 사랑해 주셨습니다.

예수님을 믿는 우리는 “부르심을 받은 일에 합당하게” 행해야 합니다 (에베소서 4:1). 바울 사도는 “모든 겸손과 온유로 하고 오래 참음으로 사랑 가운데서 서로 용납하고”(2절), 평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라고 말합니다(3절).

우리는 다른 사람들이 처한 어려움에 대해 잘 알 수는 없지만, 그들에게 인내심을 발휘할 수 있습니다. 우리 모두 일상에서 만나는 모든 이들에게 예수님의 사랑을 보여줄 수 있기를 바랍니다.

BEARING WITH ONE ANOTHER

I stopped behind a car at a red light the other day and noticed a bright sticker on the rear window boldly stating: “New Driver. Please Be Patient.” Given all the road rage we hear about (or experience), what a great reminder to be patient with other drivers.

As I looked at the sticker, I wondered what would happen if people carried around signs that alerted us that they’re a “New Parent” or “New Christian.” If we knew what our neighbors, coworkers or others we encounter throughout our day were going through, would we be more patient and even help them deal with their struggles?

We may be rushing through our days trying to avoid being interrupted by others, but let’s consider how Jesus treated people. He wasn’t in a hurry. He had compassion on people and took the time to comfort and teach and show love to those He encountered.

As believers in Jesus, we’re called to “live a life worthy of the calling [we] have received” (EPHESIANS 4:1). The apostle Paul says that includes being “completely humble and gentle; [being] patient, bearing with one another in love” (V. 2); and making every effort to live in peace and unity with each other (V. 3).

We may not know what challenges people are facing, but we can be patient with them. Let’s be an expression of Jesus’ love to everyone we encounter on our daily path.

평생을 함께 하시는 하나님

덴마크의 한 연구에서는 우리가 대부분 경험하는 것에 대해 탐구했습니다. 사람들이 자신의 실제 나이보다 젊다고 인식하는 현상에 대한 것이었습니다. 그 연구에 따르면 사람은 누구나 자기 나이보다 20퍼센트 젊게 생각한다고 합니다. 예를 들어 50세의 여성은 자신을 40세로 여긴다는 것입니다. (마치 어린 아이가 “와, 내가 벌써 다섯 살이네. 그렇지만 난 아직 네 살 때의 열정과 외모를 가졌어!”라고 생각하는 우스운 상황이 떠오릅니다.)

GOD WITH US AGE TO AGE

A Danish study explored the phenomenon most of us have experienced: perceiving ourselves as younger than we really are. The findings suggest a constant—whatever our current age, we all see ourselves as 20 percent younger. A fifty-year-old tends to imagine herself as forty years old. (This conjures up a comical scenario in which a child thinks, “Wow, I’m five, but I feel I have the energy and looks of a four-year-old!”)

It doesn’t take a scientific study to state the obvious: we’re all growing older. And Scripture has much to say about this. Isaiah’s words were issued to an Israel that had aged and become weary, but as one commentator says, “This promise to Israel, enfeebled and grown old as a nation, is applicable to every aged follower of Christ.”

The prophet reminds us of God’s provision throughout the life of everyone who has been faithful to Him: “I have upheld [you] since your birth, and have carried [you] since you were born” (ISAIAH 46:3).

So as we stew and fret about growing older, we’re reminded that God is still with us. He promises: “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you” (V. 4). Whatever age you are (or the 20 percent younger version you imagine yourself to be!), embrace today God’s promise: “I have made you and I will carry you” (V. 4).

예수님 안에서의 대접하기

미국에 인권 운동이 일어났을 때 뉴올리언스의 유명 요리사 레아 체이스는 본인이 할 수 있는 일을 했습니다. 평등권을 위해 행진하는 사람들을 위해 음식을 준비하고 나눠주었습니다. 체이스는 이렇게 말했습니다. “저는 그냥 사람들에게 음식을 나눠주었어요. 그들은 밖에 나가면 무슨 일이 있을지 알지 못한 채 무언가를 위해 싸우고 있었어요. 거리에 나가면 자기에게 무슨 일이 닥칠지도 몰랐어요. 하지만 여기에 오면 제가 음식을 준다는 것은 알고 있었지요. 제가 할 수 있는 일은 그것이었습니다.”

남을 잘 대접하는 것은 때로 대단치 않게 여겨질 수도 있지만, 그것은 그리스도 안에서 이웃을 섬기는 다른 일들 못지않게 중요합니다. “자색 옷감 장수”(사도행전 16:14)로 알려진 루디아는 마게도냐에서 예수님에 대한 복음을 전하는 바울과 사도들을 환대해 주었습니다(11-14절). 이 여인은 자기에게 있는 것, 곧 자신의 집을 가지고 여행 중인 이들을 도왔습니다. 복음을 영접한 루디아는 전도자들에게 쉴 수 있는 곳을 계속 내어주며 이렇게 말했습니다. “만일 나를 주 믿는 자로 알거든 내 집에 들어와 유하라”(15절). 인권 운동을 했던 사람들처럼 바울과 전도자들도 루디아의 환대로 식사를 걱정할 필요가 없게 되었습니다.

HOSPITALITY IN JESUS

During the US civil rights movement, famed New Orleans cook Leah Chase did what she could. She prepared food and fed those who were marching for equal rights for all people. She said, “I was just feeding people. They were fighting for something, and they didn’t know what they would find when they went out there. They didn’t know what would happen to them on the streets. But when they were here, they knew I’d feed them. That’s what I could do for them.”

The gift of hospitality may sometimes be overlooked, but it can be just as important as other forms of serving one another in Christ. A businesswoman named Lydia—“dealer in purple cloth” (ACTS 16:14)—showed hospitality to Paul and the other preachers spreading the good news about Jesus to the people of Macedonia (VV. 11-15). She used what she had—her home—to help the traveling team. After accepting the gospel message, Lydia insisted on providing a place for the preachers to rest, saying, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, . . . come and stay at my house” (V. 15). Much like the civil rights workers, Paul and his coworkers didn’t need to worry about a meal due to Lydia’s hospitality.

Gifts of hospitality can go a long way in helping all people—both fellow believers and those who still need Jesus. Let’s serve others as God provides what we need to help them.

영적 딜레마

사람들은 하루에 평균 150번 휴대폰을 본다고 합니다. 이 사실을 잠시 생각해 봅시다. 무언가 우리의 주의를 끌지만 다 유익하지 않을 수 있습니다. 트리스탄 해리스는 그렇게 생각합니다. 그는 “소셜 미디어” 의 대중화를 이끈 첨단 기술로 유명한 사람들을 그린 영화에 출연했습니다. 영화에서 그들은 첨단 기술에 대해 찬사를 보내기보다 우리의 현실을 (그리고 그 영화를) ‘소셜 딜레마’라고 부르며 경각심을 일으킵니다. “우리가 바로 상품인 것입니다. 우리가 관심을 보이면 그것이 광고 회사에 팔리는 것입니다.” 우리는 소중하고 가치 있다고 믿는 것에 관심을 보입니다. 그리고 정말로 잘 생각해 보면 우리가 관심을 가지는 것은 결국 우리의 우상이 될 수 있는 것입니다.

‘딜레마’라는 단어는 선택을 해야 하는 상황을 의미합니다. 믿기 힘들겠지만 우리는 영적 삶에서 ‘무엇에, 또는 누구에게 집중할 것인가?’라는 선택을 매일 해야 하는 딜레마를 만납니다. 그것은 곧 ‘무엇을 그리고 누구를 예배할 것인가?’의 선택입니다. 시편 기자는 분명한 선택을 했습니다. “내가 날마다 주를 송축하며 영원히 주의 이름을 송축하리이다”(시편 145:2). 그 다음 구절에서 그 이유를 말합니다. “여호와는 위대하시니 크게 찬양할 것이라 그의 위대하심을 측량하지 못하리라”(3절).

하나님의 위대하심에 비할 것은 하나도 없음을 믿었던 시편 기자는 하나님께 집중했습니다. 오직 하나님 한 분만이 우리의 찬양을 받기에 합당하십니다.

A SPIRITUAL DILEMMA

The average person checks his or her phone 150 times a day. Let that sink in a minute. Something has our attention, and it may not be for our good. Tristan Harris believes this. He’s one of the voices in a film that features some of the top names in technology, people who ushered us into “social media.” But instead of praise, their voices are sounding an alarm, calling our reality (and the film) The Social Dilemma. “We’re the product. Our attention is the product being sold to advertisers.” We give our attention to what we believe is valuable or worthy. And in a very real sense, what we give attention to we can find ourselves worshiping.

That word dilemma indicates a situation where a choice has to be made. Believe it or not, we face such a dilemma in our spiritual lives, a choice we have to make daily: Who or what will I give my attention to? In other words, Who or what will I worship? The psalmist clearly made his choice: “Every day I will praise you [God] and extol your name for ever and ever” (PSALM 145:2). The verse that follows gives his rationale: “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom” (V. 3).

The psalmist believed nothing compares to God’s greatness, and so he focused his attention there. God and God alone is worthy of our praise.

하나님의 보물

오래 사용해 닳고 낡아진 주머니칼 하나가 있습니다. 칼날은 좀 손상 되었고 손잡이에도 흠집이 있지만 이 칼은 아버지가 서랍 속 상자에 보관하시다가 나에게 주신 귀한 물건 중 하나였습니다. 아버지는 “네 할아버지에게서 받은 몇 안되는 물건 중 하나란다.”라고 하시며 그것을 내게 주셨습니다. 할아버지는 아버지가 어렸을 때 돌아가셨는데 아버지는 할아버지를 소중히 여기는 마음으로 그 칼을 소중히 간직했던 것입니다.

성경은 하나님께도 뜻밖의 보물이 하나 있다고 말합니다. 요한계시록에는 “네 생물”과 “이십사 장로”가 천국의 보좌를 둘러싸고 예수님께 경배드리는 모습이 나옵니다(4-5장). 그들은 모두 “성도의 기도를 뜻하는 향이 가득한 금 대접”(5:8)을 들고 있습니다. 고대의 향은 왕이 쓰던 귀한 것이었습니다. (마태복음 2장 11절의 동방박사가 예수님께 드린 금, 유향, 몰약을 생각해 보십시오.) 때로 우리가 드리는 기도를 별로 중요치 않게 여길 수도 있지만 하나님은 언제나 그 기도가 올라오기를 기다리십니다.

요한계시록 5장은 죄가 없으신 예수님이 우리를 향한 사랑으로 돌아가신 것을 매우 존귀하다고 기록합니다. 예수님이 존귀하시기에 하나님이 우리의 기도를 귀하게 여기십니다. 우리가 하나님께 소중한 존재이기 때문에 우리의 기도 또한 하나님께 소중한 것입니다. 하나님은 우리를 조건 없이, 값 없이, 자비로 사랑하시기 때문에 우리가 기도를 통해 그분과 가까이 하기를 진정 원하십니다.

OUR FATHER’S TREASURES

It’s just an old pocketknife, worn and tarnished with time. The blade is chipped and the handle notched, but it was one of my father’s treasures, kept in a box on his dresser until he gave it to me. “It’s one of the few things I have from your grandfather,” he told me. My grandfather died when my father was young, and Dad treasured the knife because he treasured his father.

The Bible tells us that God also has an unlikely treasure, something we might not expect. In Revelation, we see a throne in heaven encircled by “four living creatures” and “twenty-four elders,” bowing before Jesus in worship (CHS. 4-5). Each one is holding “golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people” (5:8). In ancient times, incense was something precious, used by kings (think of the gold, frankincense, and myrrh offered to Jesus in Matthew 2:11). Our prayers may not seem like much to us at times, but God wants them lifted before Him always.

Revelation 5 emphasizes the worthiness of Jesus because of His sinless life and loving death for us. Jesus’ worthiness points us to why God values our prayers. Our prayers are precious to God because we’re precious to Him. Because He loves us with such selfless, priceless, and merciful love, He longs for us to stay close to Him in prayer.

하나님께 불평하지 않기

알렉스는 기도의 응답으로 치과 진료비가 생각지 못한 보험금으로 해결된 적이 있습니다. 그러다 또 한번 치료를 받아야 하는 알렉스는 ‘이번엔 대체 어디서 돈을 구하지?’ 하며 투덜거렸습니다. 돈이 너무 많이 들어 원망이 컸습니다.

진료비를 납부해야 할 때, 마침 어느 친척이 돈을 보내왔습니다. 알렉스는 “너무 부끄러웠어요.”라고 고백하며, “하나님께서 보험으로 나를 도우셨으니, 이번에도 불평 대신 하나님께 도움을 구했어야 하는데.”라고 말했습니다.

이스라엘 자손은 수르 광야에 들어가기 바로 전에 홍해에서 하나님의 구원을 경험했습니다(출애굽기 14). 그러나 광야에서 마실 물이 없다고 불평하는 모습은 하나님의 기적을 다 잊은 것 같았습니다(15:22-24). 히브리어로 “불평” 이라는 말은 하나님께 반항하는 것을 뜻합니다. 이스라엘 백성의 원망하는 모습은 하나님께 도움을 구했던 모세와는 너무나 달랐습니다(25절). 때가 되어 하나님께서는 백성에게 은혜로 물을 주셨습니다(25-27절).

우리도 도움이 필요할 때 불평 대신 모세처럼 하나님께 도움을 구할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 때론 기적적인 방법으로, 때론 실제로 공급해 주심으로, 때론 사람들의 도움을 통해, 때론 어려움을 견딜 힘을 주심으로 우리를 도와주십니다. 우리는 하나님이 우리에게 귀 기울이고 돌보신다는 것을 믿어야 합니다.

NOT GRUMBLING AGAINST GOD

As an answer to prayer, unexpected funds from Alex’s insurance had already paid for his dental treatment. Now, another treatment was necessary. Where will I get the money for that? Alex grumbled. Resentful thoughts of heavy expenses filled his mind.

At the time when a deposit to the dentist was due, however, a cash gift from a relative suddenly arrived. “I felt ashamed,” Alex said. “I’d already seen how God had provided for me with the insurance payment. I shouldn’t have grumbled but asked Him for help instead.”

When the Israelites entered the Desert of Shur, they’d just experienced God’s deliverance at the Red Sea (EXODUS 14). His miraculous help, however, now seemed forgotten as they grumbled over the absence of drinkable water in the desert (15:22-24). The Hebrew word for “grumbling” refers to rebellion against God. The resentful response of the Israelites was very different from Moses’, who asked God for help (V. 25). Later, God graciously provided water for His people (VV. 25-27).

In times of need, we can avoid grumbling by asking God for help as Moses did. Whether His help comes in miraculous ways, practical provision, people’s assistance, or the strength to endure, we can trust that He hears us and cares for us.

다 용서하시는 하나님

어니스트 헤밍웨이는 그의 단편소설에서 스페인의 한 아버지가 사이가 멀어진 아들을 다시 보고 싶어하는 이야기를 합니다. 아버지는 지역 신문에 이런 광고를 냅니다. “파코야, 화요일 정오에 몬타나 호텔에서 만나자. 다 용서한다.” 아버지가 도착해보니 수많은 사람들이 기다리고 있습니다. 파코라는 이름을 가진 팔백 명의 남자들이 광고를 보고 아버지에게 용서받고 싶어 찾아왔던 것입니다.

ALL IS FORGIVEN

In one of his short stories, Ernest Hemingway tells a tale about a Spanish father who longs to reunite with his estranged son. He places an advertisement in a local newspaper: Paco, meet me at Hotel Montana at noon Tuesday. All is forgiven. When the father arrives, he finds a crowd waiting. Eight hundred Pacos had responded to his advertisement, longing to be forgiven by their fathers.

It’s a touching story that speaks to our own deep desire for forgiveness, and it reminds me of a story Jesus told. There, a young man leaves his father on a hunt for “wild living” but soon finds himself in trouble (LUKE 15:13-14). When he “[comes] to his senses” and returns home (V. 17), his estranged father rushes to embrace him before he’s even had a chance to apologize (V. 20). “This son of mine was dead and is alive again,” the father cries in joy; “he was lost and is found” (V. 24). In this story, the father represents God, the son represents us, and heaven’s joy is glimpsed when we too return to our heavenly Father.

Forgiveness lifts a weight off a guilty soul. But like a gift, what’s offered to us must be received. Hemingway never tells us if the father in this story finds his own Paco. Will the Father in Jesus’ story have His sons and daughters return? His arms are outstretched, awaiting our response. SHERIDAN VOYSEY
