비교하지 않기

“앞으로 페이스북에 ‘좋은 일만 올리지 않고 모두 다’ 올릴 거야!”

친구 수가 자기 남편과 함께 점심식사를 하면서 무심코 한 이 한 마디에 나는 큰 소리로 웃어넘기면서도 한편으로 생각도 하게 되었습니다. 소셜 미디어는 시간과 공간을 초월해서 친구들과 계속 연락을 취하고 기도도 할 수 있게 해주는 좋은 수단입니다. 그러나 우리가 주의하지 않으면 그것은 삶에 대한 비현실적인 태도를 갖게 합니다. 올라와 있는 글 중 우리가 보는 상당수가 “좋은 얘기들”의 “요점 정리”라면, 다른 사람들의 삶은 아무런 문제가 없구나, 그리고 우리 자신의 삶은 어디서 잘못 되었지 라는 잘못된 생각을 하게 됩니다.

남들과 비교하는 것은 불행으로 가는 확실한 지름길입니다. 예수님의 제자들이 자기들끼리 서로 비교하자(누가복음 9:46; 22:24 참조), 예수님께서 황급히 그것을 말리셨습니다. 예수님이 부활하신지 얼마 되지 않아 제자들과 만났을 때 베드로에게 믿음으로 말미암아 고난을 받게 될 것이라고 말씀하시자, 베드로가 요한을 돌아보면서 “주님 이 사람은 어떻게 되겠습니까?”라고 물었습니다. 그러자 예수님은 이렇게 대답하셨습니다. “내가 올 때까지
그를 머물게 하고자 할지라도 네게 무슨 상관이냐 너는 나를 따르라” (요한복음 21:21-22).

예수님은 베드로에게 전혀 도움이 안 되는 남과 비교하는 마음에 대한 가장 적절한 처방을 가르쳐주셨습니다. 우리가 마음을 모아 하나님과 하나님이 우리를 위해 행하신 모든 일에 집중할 때, 자기중심적인 생각은 사라지고 그분을 간절한 마음으로 따르게 됩니다. 하나님은 세상 속 경쟁에서 오는 긴장과 스트레스 대신에 우리에게 사랑으로 임하시면서 평강을 베풀어주십니다. 아무것도 그분과 비교할 수 없습니다.

No Comparison

“One of these days I’m going to put it all on Facebook—not just the good stuff! ”

My friend Sue’s comment—made casually over lunch with her husband—caused me to laugh out loud and also to think. Social media can be a good thing, helping us stay in touch with and pray for friends across the years and miles. But if we’re not careful, it can also create an unrealistic outlook on life. When much of what we see posted is a “highlight reel” of “the good stuff,” we can be misled into thinking others’ lives are without trouble, and wonder where our own went wrong.

Comparing ourselves with others is a sure recipe for unhappiness. When the disciples compared themselves to each other (SEE LUKE 9:46; 22:24), Jesus quickly discouraged it. Soon after His resurrection, Jesus told Peter how he would suffer for his faith. Peter then turned to John and asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me” (JOHN 21:21–22).

Jesus pointed Peter to the best remedy for unhealthy comparisons. When our minds are focused on God and all He’s done for us, self-focused thoughts fall gently away and we long to follow Him. In place of the world’s competitive strain and stress, He gives us His loving presence and peace. Nothing can compare with Him. - JAMES BANKS

정말 좋은 소식!

지역 신문에 짤막하지만 마음 훈훈한 기사가 실렸습니다. 건강한 가족관계 회복을 위한 신앙 프로그램에 참가했던 재소자들에게 자유롭게 가족을 찾아가볼 수 있도록 드문 선처가 베풀어졌다는 것입니다. 어떤 재소자들은 여러 해 동안 자녀들을 보지 못했습니다. 그들은 유리벽을 마주보고 얘기하는 것 대신 사랑하는 사람들을 만지고 안아볼 수 있었습니다. 가족들이 더 가까워지면서 눈물이 하염없이 흐르고 상처들이 치유되기 시작했습니다.

대부분의 독자들에게 이 기사는 그저 하나의 이야기에 지나지 않았습니다. 그러나 이 가족들에게는 서로를 안아보는 것이 인생을 변화시키는 사건이었고, 어떤 가족들에게는 용서와 화해의 과정이 시작되었습니다.

하나님의 아들을 통해 그분이 우리 죄를 용서하시고 화해를 베푸신 일은 기독교 신앙이 말하는 단순한 사실 그 이상의 의미를 지닙니다. 화해 소식을 다룬 신문기사를 보면서 예수님의 희생 이야기는 세계 만민 뿐 아니라 바로 우리 자신들에게도 정말 대단한 소식이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

예수님의 희생 이야기는 우리가 한 일 때문에 죄책감에 사로잡힐 때마다 우리가 있는 힘을 다해 매달릴 수 있는 소식입니다. 그렇게 할 때 하나님이 끝없이 자비로우시다는 사실이 우리 개인에게 다가오는 소식이 됩니다. 예수님이 우리를 대신해서 죽으셨기 때문에 우리는 깨끗이 씻음 받아 “눈보다 희어져”(시편 51:7) 하나님 아버지께로 올 수 있습니다. 우리가 그분의 자비를 누릴 자격이 없다는 것을 알게 되는 그런 때에는 하나님의 사랑과 연민은 변함없으시다는(1절), 우리가 의지할 수 있는 그 한 가지 사실에 매달릴 수 있습니다.

Great News!

The article in the local newspaper was short but heart-warming. After attending a faith-based program on building stronger family ties, a group of prison inmates were given a rare treat of an open visit with their families. Some hadn’t seen their children in years. Instead of talking through a glass panel, they could touch and hold their loved ones. The tears flowed freely as families grew closer and wounds began to heal.

For most readers, it was just a story. But for these families, holding one another was a life-changing event—and for some, the process of forgiveness and reconciliation was begun.

God’s forgiveness of our sin and offer of reconciliation, made possible through His Son, is more than a mere fact of the Christian faith. The article’s news of reconciliation reminds us that Jesus’s sacrifice is great news not just for the world, but for you and me.

In times when we’re overwhelmed by guilt for something we’ve done, however, it’s news we can cling to desperately. That’s when the fact of God’s unending mercy becomes personal news: because of Jesus’s dying on our behalf, we can come to the Father washed clean, “whiter than snow” (PSALM 51:7). In such times, when we know we don’t deserve His mercy, we can hold on to the only thing we can depend on: God’s unfailing love and compassion (V 1). LESLIE KOH

젖먹이들의 입으로

열 살 난 비올라가 나뭇가지를 마이크 삼아 목사님 흉내 내는 것을 유심히 바라본 미셀은 마을 봉사활동 기간에 비올라에게 “설교”를 할 기회를 주겠다고 하자 비올라가 좋다고 했습니다. 남수단에서 선교활동을 하는 미셀은 이렇게 썼습니다. “군중들은 열광했다......내버려졌던 한 어린 소녀가 왕 중 왕의 딸이 되어 그들 앞에 당당하게 서서는 하나님 나라의 실제 모습을 힘 있게 전하고 있었다. 듣고 있던 사람들의 절반이 예수님을 영접하기 위해 앞으로 나아왔다.”(미셀 페리, ‘사랑의 얼굴’).

그날 사람들은 어린아이의 설교를 듣게 될 거라고는 생각지도 않았습니다. 이 일은 시편 8편에 있는 “젖먹이들의 입으로”라는 구절을 떠올려줍니다. 다윗은 “주의 대적으로
말미암아 어린 아이들과 젖먹이들의 입으로 권능을 세우심이여”(2절)라고 기록했습니다. 훗날 예수님은 아이들이 예루살렘 성전에서 소리 높여 예수님을 찬양하는 것을 대제사장들과 서기관들이 비난하는 것을 보시고 마태복음 21장 16절에서 이 구절을 인용하셨습니다. 그 지도자들에게 있어 아이들은 성가신 존재에 불과했지만 예수님은 이 성경구절을 인용하시면서 하나님이 이 아이들의 찬양을 진지하게 받으셨다는 것을 보여주셨습니다. 아이들은 지도자들이 꺼려하는 일을 했습니다. 오랫동안 기다려왔던 메시아에게 영광을 돌린 것입니다.

비올라와 성전에 있던 어린아이들이 보여준 것처럼, 하나님은 그분이 영광을 받으시는데 아이를 쓰시기도 합니다. 기꺼이 하려는 아이들의 마음에서 찬양의 샘이 흘러나왔습니다.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

After watching ten-year-old Viola using a tree branch as a microphone to mimic a preacher, Michele decided to give Viola the opportunity to “preach” during a village out-
reach. Viola accepted. Michele, a missionary in South Sudan, wrote, “The crowd was enraptured. . . . A little girl who had been abandoned stood in authority before them as a daughter of the King of kings, powerfully sharing the reality of God’s Kingdom. Half the crowd came forward to receive Jesus” (Michele Perry, Love Has a Face ).

The crowd that day hadn’t expected to hear a child preach. This incident brings to mind the phrase “out of the mouths of babes,” which comes from Psalm 8. David wrote, “Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes” (V 2 ESV ). Jesus later quoted this verse in Matthew 21:16, after the chief priests and scribes criticized the children calling out praise to Jesus in the temple at Jerusalem. The children were a nuisance to these leaders. By quoting this Scripture, Jesus showed that God took seriously the praise of these children. They did what the leaders were unwilling to do: give glory to the longed-for Messiah.

As Viola and the children in the temple showed, God can use even a child to bring Him glory. Out of their willing hearts came a fountain of praise. LINDA WASHINGTON

잘못된 정보 처리하기

얼마 전에 아내와 함께 뉴욕을 방문했을 때 저녁에 눈을 무릅쓰고 택시를 불러서 묵고 있던 호텔에서 3마일(약 5킬로미터) 떨어져 있는 한 쿠바 식당에 가려고 했습니다. 택시 서비스 앱에 자세한 정보를 입력하자 화면에 나타난 가격이 그 가까운 거리에 1,547.26불이라는 것을 보고는 너무 놀라 숨이 멎는 것 같았습니다. 충격에서 벗어나 다시 보니, 내가 실수로 우리 집에 가자고 한 것을 알게 되었습니다. 수백 마일 떨어진 우리 집까지요!

잘못된 정보에 근거해 일하면 처참한 결과를 얻게 됩니다. ‘언제나 그렇습니다.’ 잠언서가 우리에게 “훈계를 너의 마음에 간직하고, 지식이 담긴 말씀에 너의 귀를 기울여라”(잠언 23:12, 새번역), 다시 말해 하나님의 지혜에 귀를 기울이라고 권면하는 것도 바로 이 때문입니다. 그렇지 않고 어리석은 사람들이나, 실제 아는 것보다 더 많이 아는 척하는 사람들, 혹은 하나님에게 등을 돌린 사람들에게서 조언을 구한다면 우리는 곤경에 빠지고 말 것입니다. 그런 사람들은 “지혜로운 말을 업신”여기며, 도움도 안 되고, 잘못 인도하며, 심지어 현혹하는 충고를 하여 우리를 그릇된 길로 이끌 수 있습니다(9절).

그와 반대로 “지식의 말씀에 귀를” 기울이고(12절), 마음을 열어 자유롭게 하시는 하나님의 가르침과 명쾌하고도 희망을 주는 말씀을 받아들일 수 있습니다. 하나님의 심오한 방식을 알고 있는 사람들의 말에 귀 기울이면 그들에게서 하나님의 지혜를 받아들이고 따를 수 있는 도움을 받을 수 있습니다. 그리고 하나님의 지혜는 우리를 결코 그릇된
길로 인도하지 않으며, 언제나 우리에게 용기를 주고 생명과 온전함을 향해 나아가게 해줍니다.

Working off Bad Information

On a recent trip to New York City, my wife and I wanted to brave a snowy evening and hire a taxi for a three-mile ride from our hotel to a Cuban restaurant. After entering the details into the taxi service’s app, I gulped hard when the screen revealed the price for our short jaunt: $1,547.26. After recovering from the shock, I realized I had mistakenly requested a ride to our home—several hundred miles away!

If you’re working with the wrong information, you’re going to end up with disastrous results. Always . This is why Proverbs encourages us to “apply [our] heart to instruction and [our] ears to words of knowledge”—God’s wisdom (PROVERBS 23:12). If we instead seek advice from those who are foolish, those who pretend to know more than they do and who have turned their back on God, we’ll be in trouble. They “scorn . . . prudent words” and can lead us astray with unhelpful, misguided, or even deceptive advice (V 9).

Instead, we can bend our “ears to words of knowledge” (V 12). We can open our heart and receive God’s liberating instruction, words of clarity and hope. When we listen to those who know the deep ways of God, they help us receive and follow divine wisdom. And God’s wisdom will never lead us astray but always encourages and leads us toward life and wholeness. WINN COLLIER

피카 정신

우리 집 근처 동네에 ‘피카’라는 이름의 커피집이 있습니다. ‘피카’라는 말은 스웨덴 말로 항상 가족, 동료 직원, 혹은 친구들과 함께 커피와 작은 케이크를 놓고 휴식을 취하는 것을 뜻합니다. 나는 스웨덴 사람은 아니지만 ‘피카’의 정신에는 내가 예수님에 대해 가장 좋아하는 한 가지가 들어 있습니다. 주님도 시간을 내어 사람들과 함께 드시면서 휴식을 취하신 것입니다.

학자들에 의하면 예수님의 식사는 아무렇게나 준비된 것이 아니었다고 합니다. 신학자 마크 글랜빌은 예수님의 식사를 구약에서 이스라엘의 향연과 축제에서 “즐거운 마음으로 먹는 ‘두 번째 코스’”라고 부릅니다. 식탁에서 예수님은 하나님이 의도 하신바 이스라엘이 지녀야 할 모습을 그대로 재현해 보이셨는데, 그것은 이스라엘이 “온 세상에 기쁨과 축하와 공의의 중심”이 되는 것이었습니다.

오천 명을 먹이신 일부터 최후의 만찬, 나아가 부활하신 후 두 제자와 식사하신 것(누가복음 24:30)에 이르기까지 예수님은 식탁 사역을 하시면서 우리로 하여금 끊임없이 분투만 하지 말고 주님 안에 머무르라고 요청하십니다. 사실 그 두 제자는 예수님과 함께 식사를 하기 전까지는 그분이 부활하신 주님이라는 것을 알아차리지 못했습니다.
“떡을 가지사 축사하시고 떼어 그들에게 주시니 그들의 눈이 밝아져” (30-31절) 살아 계신 그리스도를 알아보았습니다.

최근에 한 친구와 피카에서 코코아와 롤빵을 먹으면서 우리 또한 예수님에 대해 이야기를 나누었습니다. 주님은 ‘분명히’ 생명의 양식입니다. 우리도 주님의 식탁에 오래 머물러 주님에 대해 더 많이 알 수 있기를 소원합니다.

The Spirit of Fika

The coffeehouse in the town near my house is named Fika . It’s a Swedish word meaning to take a break with coffee and a pastry, always with family, co-workers, or friends. I’m not Swedish, yet the spirit of fika describes one thing I love most about Jesus—His practice of taking a break to eat and relax with others.

Scholars say Jesus’s meals weren’t random. Theologian Mark Glanville calls them “the delightful ‘second course’” of Israel’s feasts and celebrations in the Old Testament. At the table, Jesus lived what God had intended Israel to be: “a center of joy, celebration and justice for the whole world.”

From the feeding of 5,000, to the Last Supper—even to the meal with two believers after His resurrection (LUKE 24:30)—the table ministry of Jesus invites us to stop our constant striving and abide in Him. Indeed, not until eating with Jesus did the two believers recognize Him as the risen Lord. “He took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened” (VV 30–31) to the living Christ.

Sitting with a friend recently at Fika, enjoying hot chocolate and rolls, we found ourselves also talking of Jesus. He is the Bread of Life. May we linger at His table and find more of Him. PATRICIA RAYBON

고요한 가운데 느끼는 경외감

나는 생활이 정신없이 바쁘게 돌아가는 것을 자주 느낍니다. 한 약속이 끝나면 다른 약속으로 서둘러 가고, 그러는 와중에 받은 전화에 답신을 하고 끝도 없는 해야 할 일 목록에 표시해갑니다.
어느 일요일, 완전히 녹초가 되어 뒷마당 나무에 매어놓은 그물침대에 쓰러지듯 누웠습니다. 전화기는 아이들과 남편이 있는 집 안에 있었습니다. 처음에는 잠깐 동안만 앉아 있으려고 했는데 방해 받지 않는 고요함 속에서 나를 더 오래 붙잡아두려고 하는 것들이 눈에 띄기 시작했습니다. 그물 침대가 부드럽게 움직이며 내는 삐걱거리는 소리, 근처에 있는 라벤더 꽃을 맴도는 벌들의
윙윙거리는 소리, 머리 위에서 펄럭거리는 새의 날개 소리가 들려왔습니다. 하늘은 눈이 부시게 푸르렀고 구름이 바람에 실려 움직이고 있었습니다.

나는 하나님께서 만드신 모든 것들에 감동되어 눈물이 흘렀습니다. 눈에 보이고 귀에 들리는 여러 경이로운 것들을 다 받아들일 수 있게 천천히 시간을 가지고 하나님의 창조의 권능에 감사하며 경배 드리고 싶은 마음이 솟았습니다. 시편 104편의 기자도 하나님이 손으로 만드신 작품들을 보고 똑같이 겸손하게 이렇게 고백했습니다. “주께서 하시는 일의 결실이 땅을 만족시켜 주는도다”
(13절).

바쁜 생활 가운데서도 고요한 순간을 가져보면 하나님의 창조의 능력을 느낄 수 있습니다! 하나님이 만드신 높은 산과 새들을 위한 나뭇가지 등, 우리 주위에는 하나님의 능력과 다정함을 보여주는 것들로 가득합니다. “이 모든 것을 주님께서 지혜로 만드셨습니다”(24절, 새번역).

Quiet Awe

My life often feels frenzied and hectic. I hurry from one appointment to the next, returning phone calls and checking items off my seemingly infinite to-do list while on my way. Out of sheer exhaustion one Sunday, I collapsed into the hammock in our backyard. My phone was inside, as were my children and husband. At first I planned to sit for just a moment or two, but in the undistracted stillness, I began to notice things that invited me to linger longer. I could hear the creak of the hammock swinging gently, the buzz of a bee in the nearby lavender, and the flap of a bird’s wings overhead. The sky was a brilliant blue, and the clouds moved on the wind.

I found myself moved to tears in response to all God had made. When I slowed long enough to take in the many wonderful things within my eyesight and earshot, I was stirred to worship in gratitude for God’s creative power. The writer of Psalm 104 was equally humbled by the work of God’s hands, noting “you fill the earth with the fruit of your labor” (V 13 NLT ).

In the midst of a harried life, a quiet moment can remind us of God’s creative might! He surrounds us with evidence of His power and tenderness; He made both the high mountains and branches for birds. “In wisdom [He] made them all” (V 24). KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

하나님의 이야기 속에서 살기

어니스트 헤밍웨이가 단어 여섯 개로 흥미진진한 이야기 하나를 지어낼 수 있느냐는 질문을 받았습니다. 그의 응답입니다. “아기 신발 팝니다. 한번도 신지 않았음.”(For sale: Baby shoes. Never worn.) 사람들에게 나머지를 더 생각하게 만드는 헤밍웨이의 이 이야기에는 힘이 들어있습니다. 건강한 아이지만 그냥 그 신발이 필요하지 않은 건가? 아니면 하나님의 깊은 사랑과 위로가 필요한 어떤 가슴 아픈 죽음이 있었던 걸까?

아주 훌륭한 이야기들은 우리의 상상력을 불러일으킵니다. 그렇기 때문에 지금까지 있었던 가장 위대한 이야기가 우리의 창의력에 불을 지피는 것이 전혀 놀랍지 않습니다. 하나님의 이야기에는 중심이 되는 하나의 축이 있습니다. 하나님이 만물을 창조하셨고, 우리(인류)는 죄에 빠졌으며, 우리를 죄에서 구하시기 위해 예수님이 이 땅에 오셔서 죽으시고 다시 사셨으며, 이제 우리는 주님이 다시 오셔서 만물을 회복하시는 것을 기다리고 있다는 것입니다.

이전에 있었던 일과 미래에 있을 일을 알게 된 우리는 이제 어떻게 살아야 할까요? 예수님이 그분의 모든 창조물을 악의 손아귀에서 회복시키고 계시다면 우리도 “어둠의 일을 벗고 빛의 갑옷을 입어야” (로마서 13:12) 합니다. 여기에는 하나님의 능력으로 우리가 죄에서 돌아서는 것과 하나님과 다른 이들을 철저히 사랑하기로 결심하는 일이 함께 포함됩니다(8-10절).

우리가 예수님과 함께 악에 맞서 싸우는 구체적인 방법은 우리가 가진 은사가 무엇이며, 우리 눈에 보이는 필요가 무엇인가에 달려있습니다. 생각의 폭을 넓혀 우리 주변을 돌아보고 상처 받아 눈물 흘리는 자들을 찾아내어 하나님께서 이끄시는 대로 그들에게 하나님의 공의와 사랑과 위로를 전해줍시다.

Living in God’s Story

Ernest Hemingway was asked if he could write a compelling story in six words. His response: “For sale: Baby shoes. Never worn.” Hemingway’s story is powerful because it inspires us to fill in the details. Were the shoes simply not needed by a healthy child? Or was there a tragic loss—something requiring God’s deep love and comfort?

The best stories pique our imagination, so it’s no surprise that the greatest story ever told stokes the fires of our creativity. God’s story has a central plot: He created all things; we (the human race) fell into sin; Jesus came to Earth and died and rose again to save us from our sins; and we now await His return and the restoration of all things.

Knowing what has come before and what lies ahead, how should we now live? If Jesus is restoring His entire creation from the clutches of evil, we must “put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light” (ROMANS 13:12). This includes turning from sin by God’s power and choosing to love Him and others well (VV 8–10).

The specific ways we fight with Jesus against evil will depend on what gifts we have and what needs we see. Let’s use our imagination and look around us. Let’s seek out the wounded and weeping, and extend God’s justice, love, and comfort as He guides us. MIKE WITTMER

우리 손을 붙드시는 하나님

어느 주일날 교회에서 귀엽고 용감하고 독립심이 있어 보이는 어린 여자아이 하나가 계단을 내려가고 있었습니다. 두 살이 넘을까 말까해 보이는 이 아이는 한발 한발 계단을 디디면서 아래층으로 내려갔습니다. 계단을 내려가는 것이 아이가 하려는 일이었는데 아이는 그것을 해냈습니다. 나는 이 용기 있는 유아의 대담한 독립심을 생각하며 혼자 웃었습니다. 아이가 그렇게 겁내지 않고 할 수 있었던 것은 아이를 돌보는 엄마가 줄곧 자기를 주의
깊게 지켜보고 있고, 사랑의 손길을 뻗어 자기를 도와주고 있다는 것을 알고 있었기 때문입니다. 이것은 주님의 자녀들이 여러 가지 불확실한 상황을 살아갈 때 주님께서 그들을 기꺼이 도와줄 준비가 되어 있다는 것을 잘 보여주고 있습니다.

오늘 성경본문에는 “손”에 대한 언급이 두 번 나옵니다. 주님은 그분의 옛 백성들에게 두려워하거나 놀라지 말라고 주의를 주신 후에, “나의 의로운 오른손으로 너를 붙들리라” (이사야 41:10)고 말씀하셨습니다. 불안과 두려움에 찬 많은 아이들은 부모의 힘으로 안정을 찾습니다. 우리는 여기에서 하나님의 권능을 볼 수 있습니다. 두 번째 “손”의 언급에서도 하나님 자신의 자녀들의 안전을 지키기 위해 행동하시는 분은 하나님이시라는 것을 다시 한 번 보여줍니다. “나는 주 너의 하나님이다 내가 너의 오른손을 붙잡고 있다”(13절, 새번역). 삶의 상황과 시대는 변했지만 주님은 변하지 않으셨습니다. 지금도 주님이 우리를 도와주시겠다고 약속하시고 “두려워하지 말라”(10,13절)라는 우리가 절실히 들어야 하는 말씀으로 확신시켜주시기 때문에 우리는 절망할 필요가 없습니다(10절).

He Holds Our Hand

The little girl who navigated the stairway one Sunday at church was cute, spunky, and independent. One by one the child—who appeared to be not much older than two years—took the steps down to the lower level. Descending the stairs was her mission and she accomplished it. I smiled to myself as I pondered the daring independence of this courageous toddler. The child wasn’t afraid because she knew her caring mother’s watchful eye was always on her and her loving hand was extended to help her. This aptly pictures the Lord’s readiness to help His children as they make their way through life with its varied uncertainties.

Today’s Scripture includes two “hand” references. After cautioning His ancient people not to fear or be dismayed, the Lord told them, “I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (ISAIAH 41:10). Many anxious and fearful children have been steadied by the strength of a parent. Here God’s power comes into view. In the second “hand” reference, once again it’s the Lord who acted to secure the safety of His own. “For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand” (V 13). While life situations and times have changed, the Lord hasn’t. We need not despair (V 10) because the Lord still assures us with the
promise of His support and with the words we desperately need to hear: “Do not fear” (VV 10, 13). ARTHUR JACKSON

산 제물

우리 고모할머니는 시카고와 뉴욕을 오가면서 광고업계에서 열심히 일하셨습니다. 그런데 부모님에 대한 사랑 때문에 그 일을 그만두기로 했습니다. 고모할머니의 부모님은 미네소타에서 사셨는데 보살핌이 필요했습니다. 남자 형제 둘이 모두 어렸을 때 비극적인 상황에서 세상을 떠나서 고모할머니가 남겨진 유일한 자식이었습니다. 그녀에게 부모님을 섬기는 일은 자기의 믿음을 표현하는 것이었습니다.

바울 사도는 로마 교회에 보낸 편지에서 성도들에게 “하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물”(로마서 12:1)이 되라고 촉구했습니다. 그는 성도들이 서로에게 그리스도의 희생적인 사랑을 베풀어주기를 바랐습니다. 그리고 그들에게 스스로를 실제보다 더 높게 평가하지 말라고 요구하면서(3절), 그들이 불화와 분열에 빠지게 되었을 때 “우리 많은 사람이 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되어 서로 지체가 되었기”(5절) 때문에 그들의 교만한 마음을 내려놓으라고 요구했습니다. 그는 그들이 서로 서로 희생적인 사랑을 보여주기를 간절히 바랐습니다.

우리에게는 매일 다른 이들을 섬길 기회가 주어집니다. 예를 들어, 줄을 서서 기다릴 때 다른 사람을 먼저 가게 할 수 있고, 고모할머니처럼 아픈 사람을 돌봐줄 수도 있으며, 아니면 자기 경험을 나누면서 충고나 지침이 되는 말을 해줄 수도 있습니다. 우리가 스스로를 산 제물로 내어드릴 때, 우리는 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 됩니다.

Living Sacrifice

My great aunt had an exciting job in advertising and traveled between Chicago and New York City. But she chose to give up that career out of love for her parents. They lived in Minnesota and needed to be cared for. Both of her brothers had died young in tragic circumstances and she was her mom and dad’s only remaining child. For her, serving her parents was an expression of her faith.

The apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Rome urged Christian believers to be “a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God” (ROMANS 12:1). He hoped they would extend Christ’s sacrificial love to each other. And he asked them not to think of themselves more highly than they should (V 3). When they fell into disagreements and division, he called them to lay down their pride, because “in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others” (V 5). He yearned that they would show each other sacrificial love.

Each day we have the opportunity to serve others. For instance, we might let someone go ahead of us in a line or we might, like my great aunt, care for someone who is ill. Or maybe we share from our experience as we give another advice and direction. When we offer ourselves as living sacrifices, we honor God. AMY BOUCHER PYE

격려의 편지 보내기

대부분의 네 살짜리 아이들처럼 루비도 뛰어다니고, 노래하고, 춤추고, 놀기를 좋아했습니다. 그러던 어느 날 루비가 무릎이 아프다고 우는 소리를 하기 시작했습니다. 루비의 부모는 아이를 데리고 가서 검사를 받았습니다. 검사 결과는 충격적으로 신경아세포종 4기 암으로 진단되었습니다. 루비에게 문제가 생긴 것입니다. 루비는 즉시 입원했습습니다.

루비의 병원 생활은 점점 길어져서 집에서 떨어져 지내기에 힘든 시기인 크리스마스 때까지 계속되었습니다. 루비를 돌보던 한 간호사가 아이디어를 내어 루비의 병실 앞에 우편함을 만들어서 가족들이 루비에게 기도와 격려가 담긴 편지를 보낼 수 있게 해주었습니다. 그 후 아이를 위한 기도 방법을 페이스북에 올리자, 친구들과 전혀 모르는 사람들에게서 많은 편지들이 전해져 모두를, 특히 루비를 깜짝 놀라게 했습니다. 한 통 한 통의 편지를(총 10만 통이 넘었음) 받을 때마다 루비는 적지 않은 힘을 얻었고 마침내 집에 돌아갈 수 있게 되었습니다.

골로새 사람들에게 보낸 바울의 편지가 바로 이것, 곧 한 통의 편지였습니다(골로새서 1:2). 거기에는 열매 맺음과 지식, 능력, 견딤, 그리고 오래 참음이 지속적으로 이어지기를 바라는 말들이 한 페이지에 기록되어 있습니다(10-11절). 그러한 말들이 골로새의 신실한 성도들에게 얼마나 좋은 약이 되었을지 상상할 수 있겠습니까? 누군가가 끊임없이 그들을 위해 기도하고 있다는 것을 아는 것만으로도 그들에게 그리스도 예수를 믿는 믿음 안에서 굳건히 서 있을 수 있는 힘이 되었습니다.

우리의 격려의 말도 어려움에 처한 사람들에게 놀라울 정도로 도움을 줄 수 있습니다.

Send It in a Letter

Like most four-year-olds, Ruby loved to run, sing, dance, and play. But she started complaining about pain in her knees. Ruby’s parents took her in for tests. The results were shocking—a diagnosis of cancer, stage 4 neuroblastoma. Ruby was in trouble. She was quickly admitted to the hospital.

Ruby’s hospital stay lingered on, spilling over into the Christmas season, a hard time to be away from home. One of Ruby’s nurses came up with the idea to place a mailbox outside her room so family could send letters full of prayers and encouragement to her. Then the plea went out on Facebook, and that’s when the volume of mail coming in from friends and complete strangers surprised everyone, most of all Ruby. With each letter received (more than 100,000 total), Ruby grew a little more encouraged, and she finally got to go home.

Paul’s letter to the people at Colossae was exactly that—a letter (COLOSSIANS 1:2). Words penned on a page that carried hopes for continued fruitfulness and knowledge and strength and endurance and patience (VV 10–11). Can you imagine what a dose of good medicine such words were to the faithful at Colossae? Just knowing that someone was praying nonstop for them strengthened them to stay steady in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Our words of encouragement can dramatically help others in need. JOHN BLASE
