우리를 위한 수공품

우리 할머니는 고향 텍사스주의 경연 대회에서 입상한 경력이 있는 아주 재능 있는 재봉사였습니다. 할머니는 내 인생의 특별한 때마다 직접 손으로 꿰매 만든 선물을 주시며 나를 축하해 주시곤 했습니다. 고등학교를 졸업할 때는 진홍색 모헤어 스웨터를, 결혼할 때는 청록색 누비이불을 만들어주셨습니다. 할머니가 만든 선물마다 접힌 모서리에는 “너를 위해 만든 문나 (할머니 이름)의 수공품”이라는 서명 태그가 있었습니다. 그곳에 수놓인 글자 하나하나는
나를 향한 할머니의 사랑을 담고 있었으며, 나의 장래에 대한 그분의 믿음을 강력히 웅변해 보여주었습니다.

바울은 에베소 교인들에게 보낸 서신에서 이 세상 삶의 목적을 언급하면서, 그들을 “그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 하나님의 작품” 이라고 묘사했습니다(2:10). 여기서 “작품” 은 예술작품, 즉 걸작품을 말합니다. 바울은 이어서 설명하기를, 우리를 창조하신 하나님의 작업은 이 세상에서 하나님의 영광을 드러내기 위해 선한 일을 하는 우리의 작업, 다시 말해 우리와 예수님과의 관계 회복을 이끌어낸다고 했습니다. 우리 자신의 선행으로는 결코 구원받을 수 없지만, 하나님의 손길이 그분의 목적을 위해 우리를 작품화할 때 우리를 사용하여 다른 사람들을 하나님의 놀라운 사랑 앞으로 인도하실 수 있습니다.

우리 문나 할머니는 나에 대한 사랑과 내가 이 세상에서 목적을 찾아 살기를 바라는 할머니의 열정을 내게 전해주려고 바늘에 머리를 대고 수공품들을 만들었습니다. 그리고 하나님은 우리가 스스로 하나님을 체험하고 그분의 작품을 다른 사람들에게 보여줄 수 있도록, 손가락으로 우리의 하루하루를 빚으시며 우리의 가슴에 자신의 사랑과 목적을 수놓으십니다.

Hand Made for You

My grandmother was a talented seamstress who won contests in her native Texas. Throughout my life, she celebrated hallmark occasions with a hand-sewn gift. A burgundy mohair sweater for my high school graduation. A turquoise quilt for my marriage. I’d fold over a corner of each custom-crafted item to discover her signature tag reading, “Hand made for you by Munna.” With every embroidered word, I sensed my grandmother’s love for me and received a powerful statement of her faith in my future.

Paul wrote to the Ephesians of their purpose in this world, describing them as “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (2:10). Here “handiwork” denotes a work of art or a masterpiece. Paul goes on to describe that God’s handiwork in creating us would result in our handiwork of creating good works—or expressions of our restored relationship with Jesus—for His glory in our world. We can never be saved by our own good works, but when God hand makes us for His purposes, He can use us to bring others toward His great love.

With her head bowed over her needle, my Munna hand made items to communicate her love for me and her passion that I discover my purpose on this planet. And with His fingers shaping the details of our days, God stitches His love and purposes in our hearts that we might experience Him for ourselves and demonstrate His handiwork to others. - ELISA MORGAN

비탄에서 경배로

킴은 2013년에 유방암 투병을 시작했습니다. 치료를 끝내고 나흘 후에, 의사들은 그녀의 폐가 점점 나빠지고 있으므로 3년에서 5년 정도 더 살 수 있다고 했습니다. 비탄에 빠진 그녀는 처음 1년 동안 하나님 앞에 감정을 털어놓으며 울면서 기도했습니다. 하지만 내가 그녀를 만나게 된 2015년에는 이미 자신의 모든 것을 하나님께 맡기고 남들에게 기쁨과 평화를 전하고 있었습니다. 여전히 힘든 날도 있었지만, 하나님은 그녀가 다른 아픈 사람들을 격려하도록 가슴이 찢어지는 그녀의 고통을 희망찬 찬양의 아름다운 간증으로 바꿔주셨습니다.

비참한 상황 속에서도 하나님은 우리의 울부짖음을 춤으로 바꾸실 수 있습니다. 하나님의 치유가 항상 우리가 바라거나 기대했던 대로 이루어지지 않는 것처럼 보여도, 우리는 하나님이 일하시는 방식이 옳다고 자신할 수 있습니다(시편 30:1-3). 우리의 가는 길이 아무리 눈물로 얼룩질지라도 하나님을 찬양할 수밖에 없는 많은 이유가 있습니다(4절). 우리가 하나님 안에서 기뻐할 수 있는 것은 하나님께서 우리의 확고한 믿음을 담보해주시기 때문입니다 (5-7절). 그래서 우리는 하나님의 자비를 울부짖는 많은 경배자들에게 하나님이 가져다주실 소망을 찬양합니다(8-10절). 오직 하나님만이 절망의 통곡을 어떤 상황과도 관계없이 힘찬 기쁨으로 바꾸실 수 있는 분입니다(11-12절).

자비하신 하나님은 슬픔에 빠진 우리를 위로하면서 평화 속에서 우리를 감싸주시고, 우리에게 힘을 주셔서 다른 사람들에게 우리 자신과 똑같은 연민의 마음을 가질 수 있게 해주십니다. 그래서 사랑이 많으시고 신실하신 주님은 우리의 통곡을 마음속 깊은 신뢰와 찬양, 그리고 심지어 기쁨의 춤까지 추게 하는 경배로 ‘돌려놓으실 수’ 있으며 실제로 ‘돌려놓기도’ 합니다.

From Wailing to Worship

Kim began battling breast cancer in 2013. Four days after her treatment ended, doctors diagnosed her with a progressive lung disease and gave her three to five years to live. She grieved, sobbing prayers as she processed her emotions before God for the first year. By the time I met Kim in 2015, she had surrendered her situation to Him and radiated contagious joy and peace. Though some days are still hard, God continues to transform her heart-wrenching suffering into a beautiful testimony of hope-filled
praise as she encourages others.

Even when we’re in dire circumstances, God can turn our wailing into dancing. Though His healing won’t always look or feel like we’d hoped or expected, we can be confident in God’s ways (PSALM 30:1–3). No matter how tear-stained our path may be, we have countless reasons to praise Him (V 4). We can rejoice in God, as He secures our confident faith (VV 5–7). We can cry out for His mercy (VV 8–10), celebrating the hope He’s brought to many weeping worshipers. Only God can transform wails of despair into vibrant joy that doesn’t depend on circumstances (VV 11–12).

As our merciful God comforts us in our sorrow, He envelops us in peace and empowers us to extend compassion toward others and ourselves. Our loving and faithful Lord can and does
turn our wailing into worship that can lead to heart-deep trust, praise, and maybe even joyful dancing. - XOCHITL DIXON

‘맘마’가 남긴 믿음의 발자취

우리 할머니는 이름도 길었지만 그 이름보다도 훨씬 더 오래 사셨습니다. 마델린 하리엣 오어 잭슨 윌리엄스는 백 한 살까지 살았으며, 두 사람의 남편보다 더 오래 살았습니다. 남편들은 둘 다 목사님이었습니다. 우리는 할머니 마델린을 ‘맘마’라고 불렀습니다. 두 번째 남편이 할머니를 데려갈 때까지 나와 내 형제들은 할머니 집에서 함께 살았기 때문에 누구보다 우리 할머니를 잘 압니다. 할머니의 새 집도 우리 집에서 50마일 (80킬로미터)이 채 안 됐습니다. 할머니는 찬송가를 부르고, 교리문답을 암송하며, 피아노를 연주하고 하나님을 경외하는 분이셨습니다. 지금까지도 우리 형제들과 나에게는 할머니의 믿음이 남긴 자취가 있습니다.

디모데후서 1:3-7에 의하면, 디모데의 할머니 로이스와 어머니 유니게는 디모데의 삶에 아주 큰 영향을 끼쳤습니다. 할머니와 어머니의 삶과 가르침은 성경이라는 토양에 뿌리박고 있었고(5절; 디모데후서 3:14-16), 그들의 믿음은 나중에 디모데의 마음속에서 활짝 피어났습니다. 성경에 바탕을 둔 가정교육은 디모데가 하나님과의 관계를 형성하는 바탕이 되었을 뿐 아니라, 주님의 사역에도 쓰임 받게 해주었습니다(1:6-7).

디모데 시대와 마찬가지로 오늘날에도 하나님은 믿음이 깊은 남녀들을 택하여 다음 세대에 믿음의 자국을 남기십니다. 우리의 기도와 언어, 행동, 봉사는 우리가 살아 있는 동안이나 세상을 떠난 후에도 주님이 능력 있게 사용하실 것입니다. 그런 이유로 나와 우리 형제들은 지금도 ‘맘마’로부터 물려받은 믿음을 실천하고 있습니다. 뿐만 아니라 나는 ‘맘마’의 유산이 우리 세대에서 끝나지 않기를 기도하고 있습니다.

Marked by Momma

Her name was long but her years were even longer. Madeline Harriet Orr Jackson Williams lived to be 101 years old, outliving two husbands. Both were preachers. Madeline was my grandmother, and we knew her as Momma. My siblings and I got to know her well; we lived in her home until her second husband whisked her away. Even then she was less than fifty miles away from us. Our grandmother was a hymn-singing, catechism-reciting, piano-playing, God-fearing woman, and my siblings and I have been marked by her faith.

According to 2 Timothy 1:3–7, Timothy’s grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice had a huge impact on his life. Their living and teaching were rooted in the soil of Scripture (V 5; 2 TIMOTHY 3:14–16) and eventually their faith blossomed in Timothy’s heart. His biblically based upbringing was not only foundational for his relationship with God, but it was also vital to his usefulness in the Lord’s service (1:6–7).

Today, as well as in Timothy’s time, God uses faithful women and men to mark future generations. Our prayers, words, actions, and service can be powerfully used by the Lord while we live and after we’re gone. That’s why my siblings and I still rehearse things that were passed on to us from Momma. My prayer is that Momma’s legacy will not stop with us. - ARTHUR JACKSON

험한 곳에서의 기쁨

친구는 전화를 받을 수 없으면 자동응답기에 메시지를 남기도록 해놓았습니다. 녹음된 음성은 “멋진 하루 되세요!”라는 말로 명랑하게 끝맺고 있습니다. 친구의 말을 다시 생각하면서 한가지를 깨달았습니다. 우리의 능력으로는 매일을 “멋지게” 살 수 없다는 것입니다. 어떤 상황은 정말 처참할 때도 있습니다. 하지만 좀 자세히 보면 일이 잘 풀렸든 잘못 풀렸든 나의 하루 중에서 괜찮고 아름다운 무언가를 발견하게 됩니다.

하박국 은 어려운 상황을 맞고 있었습니다. 하나님은 선지자인 그에게 다가올 앞날에 백성들이 먹고 살아야 하는 곡식이나 가축 어느 것도 열매를 맺지 못하고 새끼를 낳지 못하리라는 것을 미리 보여주셨습니다(3:17). 다가올 고난을 이겨내려면 낙관적인 마음 이상의 것이 필요했습니다. 이스라엘 온 백성이 극도의 가난에 처하게 될 것이기 때문입니다. 하박국은 가슴이 두근거리고 입술이 떨리며 다리가 후들거리는 두려움을 겪었습니다(16절).

그럼에도 불구하고 하박국은 말합니다. “여호와로 말미암아 즐거워하며” “기뻐하리로다”(18절). 그는 험한 곳도 걸어갈 수 있는 힘을 주시는 하나님께 소망이 있음을 이스라엘 백성들에게 선포합니다(19절).

우리는 매우 고통스럽고 힘든 시기를 지날 때가 있습니다. 우리가 모든 것을 잃었거나 원했던 것을 얻지 못했을지라도, 우리도 하박국처럼 사랑의 하나님과의 관계를 기뻐할 수 있습니다. 우리에게 아무것도 없다고 느낄 때조차도 하나님은 결코 우리를 실망시키거나 버리지 않으십니다(히브리서 13:5). “슬퍼하는 자에게 공급하시는” 하나님 그분이 기쁨의 궁극적인 이유가 되십니다(이사야 61:3).

Joy in Hard Places

Whenever she was unable to take my phone call, my friend’s voicemail recording invited me to leave her a message. The recording cheerfully concluded, “Make it a great day!” As I reflected on her words, I realized that it’s not within our power to make every day “great”—some circumstances truly are devastating. But a closer look might reveal something redeeming and beautiful in my day, whether things are going well or poorly.

Habakkuk wasn’t experiencing easy circumstances. As a prophet, God had shown him coming days when none of the crops or livestock—on which God’s people depended—would be fruitful (3:17). It would take more than mere optimism to endure the coming hardships. As a people group, Israel would be in extreme poverty. Habakkuk experienced heart-pounding, lip-quivering, leg-
trembling fear (V 16).

Yet despite that, Habakkuk said he would “rejoice in the LORD ” and “be joyful” (V 18). He proclaimed His hope in the God who provides the strength to walk in difficult places (V 19).

Sometimes we go through seasons of deep pain and hardship. But no matter what we’ve lost, or wanted but never had, we can, like Habakkuk, rejoice in our relationship with a loving God. Even when it feels like we have nothing else, He will never fail or abandon us (HEBREWS 13:5). He, the One who “provide[s] for those who grieve,” is our ultimate reason for joy (ISAIAH 61:3). - KIRSTEN HOLMBERG

용기 있게 맞서기

많은 독일교회 지도자들이 히틀러에 굴복했지만, 신학자이자 목사인 마틴 니묄러는 용감하게 나치의 악행에 저항했던 사람 가운데 하나였습니다. 이런 얘기를 읽은 적이 있습니다. 1970 년대에 나이 든 독일인 일행이 큰 호텔 밖에 서 있었는데, 그 중에 조금은 젊어 보이는 한 사람이 그 일행의 짐 가방을 들고 분주히 왔다 갔다 하고 있었습니다. 어떤 사람이 그들이 누구인지 물었습니다. “독일 목사들입니다.” “그러면 조금 젊은 저 사람은 누구입니까?” “마틴 니묄러입니다. 지금 여든 살인데, ‘두려움을 모르는’ 사람이기 때문에 계속 젊음을 유지하고 있습니다.”

니묄러가 두려움에 저항할 수 있었던 것은 두려움을 못 느끼게 하는 초인적인 유전자를 가지고 있어서가 아니라 하나님의 은혜 때문이었습니다. 사실, 그는 한때 반유대주의 견해를 가진 적이 있었으나 회개하였고, 하나님은 그를 회복시켜 진리를 말하고 진리대로 살 수 있게 해주셨습니다.

모세는 이스라엘 백성들에게 두려움을 이겨내고 진리 안에서 하나님을 따르라고 격려하였습니다. 백성들이 모세가 곧 자기들로부터 떠날 것을 알고 걱정하자 모세가 단호하게 말했습니다. “너희는 강하고 담대하라 두려워하지 말라......떨지 말라 이는 네 하나님 여호와 그가너와 함께 가실 것임이라”(신명기 31:6). 그들은 하나님이 그들과 함께하신다는 단 한 가지 이유만으로도 불확실한 미래 앞에서 두려움에 떨 이유가 없었습니다.

그 어떤 어두움이 당신 앞에 나타나고 그 어떤 두려움이 들이닥쳐도 하나님은 당신과 함께 하십니다. 하나님의 자비하심을 믿고 하나님은 “결코 너를 떠나지 아니하시며 버리지 아니하실”(6,8절) 것이라는 것을 명심하고 두려움에 맞설 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Standing with Courage

While most German church leaders gave in to Hitler, theologian and pastor Martin Niemöller was among the brave souls who resisted Nazi evil. I read a story describing how in the 1970s a group of older Germans stood outside a large hotel while what appeared to be a younger man bustled about with the group’s luggage. Someone asked who the group was. “German pastors,” came the answer. “And the younger man?” “That’s Martin Niemöller—he’s eighty. But he has stayed young because he is unafraid .”

Niemöller wasn’t able to resist fear because he possessed some superhuman antifear gene, but because of God’s grace. In fact, he had once held anti-Semitic views. But he had repented and God restored him and helped him speak and live out the truth.

Moses encouraged the Israelites to resist fear and follow God in truth. When they’d become fearful after learning Moses would soon be taken from them, the leader had an unflinching word for them: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified . . . for the LORD your God goes with you” (DEUTERONOMY 31:6). There was no reason to tremble before an uncertain future because of one reason: God was with them.

Whatever darkness looms for you, whatever terrors bombard you—God is with you. By God’s mercy, may you face your fears with the knowledge that God “will never leave you nor forsake you” (vv. 6, 8). - WINN COLLIER

상징 그 이상의 의미

농구 스타 조던 보해넌은 아이오와 대학교 농구팀의 역사를 새롭게 쓸 순간을 맞이하고 있었습니다. 자유투에 성공하면 25년 동안 이어 오던 학교 기록을 경신할 수 있었던 것입니다. 그러나 그는 일부러 골을 넣지 않았습니다. 왜 그랬을까요? 1993년 그 대학의 농구 선수였던 크리스 스트릿이 연속으로 34번의 자유투를 성공시킨 후 며칠 만에 자동차 사고로 목숨을 잃었습니다. 보해넌은 스트릿의 기록을 깨지 않고 그를 기리기로 한 것입니다.

보해넌은 자신의 이름이 드러나는것보다 더 중요한 무엇이 있다는 것을 분명히 인식하고 있음을 보여주었습니다. 우리는 젊은 용사 다윗의 삶에서 이와 비슷한 예들을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 다윗이 자기를 따르는 오합지졸들과 동굴에 숨어 지낼 때 자기 고향 베들레헴에 있는 우물물을 몹시 마시고 싶어 했습니다. 그러나 그곳은 두려운 블레셋 군대가 점령하고 있었습니다(사무엘하 23:14-15).

용감하게도 다윗의 전사 세 명이 “블레셋 요새 지역에 들어가” 물을 가져와 다윗에게 주었습니다. 그러나 다윗은 그 물을 자신이 받아 마실 수가 없었습니다. 그래서 다윗은 “이는 목숨을 걸고 갔던 사람들의 피가 아니니이까”라고 하며 “그 물을 여호와 앞에 부어 드렸습니다”(16-17절).

가능하면 무엇이든 낚아채는 사람들이 종종 보상받는 이 세상에서 이 얼마나 강한 사랑과 희생을 보여주는 행동인지요! 그런 행동들은 단순한 상징 그 이상의 의미가 있습니다.

More than a Symbol

On the verge of making team history, University of Iowa basketball star Jordan Bohannon intentionally missed the free throw that would have broken a twenty-five-year-old school record. Why? In 1993, days after Iowa’s Chris Street had made thirty-four free throws in a row, he lost his life in a car crash. Bohannon chose to honor Street’s memory by not breaking his record.

Bohannon showed a keen awareness of things more important than his own advancement. We see similar values in the life of the young warrior David. Hiding in a cave with his ragtag army, David longed for a drink from the well in his hometown of Bethlehem, but the dreaded Philistines occupied the area (2 SAMUEL 23:14–15).

In a stunning act of bravery, three of David’s warriors “broke through the Philistine lines,” got the water, and brought it to David. But David couldn’t bring himself to drink it. Instead, he “poured it out before the LORD ,” saying, “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” (VV 16–17).

In a world that often rewards those who seize whatever they can grasp, how powerful acts of love and sacrifice can be! Such deeds are much more than mere symbols. - TIM GUSTAFSON

계속해서 나아가기

기업계에서 일하면서 재능이 있으면서도 생각이 온건한 사람들을 많이 만날 수 있었습니다. 그러나 다른 도시에 살고 있던 감독관이 이끌었던 프로젝트의 경우는 예외였습니다. 이 관리자는 매주 전화 상황보고 때마다 팀 업무의 진척 상황과는 상관없이 우리의 작업에 대해 매몰차게 비난하고 더 분발할 것을 요구했습니다. 이렇게 당하다 보니 나는 의욕이 꺾이면서 일에 염증이 났고, 때로는 직장을 그만두고 싶었습니다.

모세도 암흑의 재앙이 덮치고 있는 동안 애굽왕 바로와 마주섰을 때 하던 일을 그만두고 싶었을 것입니다. 하나님이 애굽에 여덟 가지 큰 재앙을 퍼부으시자 바로가 마침내 분노했습니다. “[모세,] 너는 나를 떠나가고 스스로 삼가 다시 내 얼굴을 보지 말라 네가 내 얼굴을 보는 날에는 죽으리라” (출애굽기 10:28).

이런 위협에도 마침내 모세는 하나님께 쓰임 받아 이스라엘 백성을 바로의 통치에서 벗어나게 합니다. “믿음으로 모세는 왕의 분노를 ‘두려워하지 않고’ 이집트를 떠났습니다. 그는 보이지 않는 하나님을 보는 것같이 꾸준히 견디어 나갔던 것입니다”(히브리서 11:27, 현대인의 성경). 모세는 구원하시겠다고 하신 약속을 하나님께서 지키시리라고 믿었기 때문에 바로의 겁박을 극복할 수 있었습니다(출애굽기 3:17).

지금 우리는 하나님께서 성령을 통하여 우리를 도우시면서 어떤 상황에서도 우리와 함께 하시겠다는 약속에 의지할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 우리에게 초자연적 능력과 사랑과 절제하는 마음을 주셔서 어떤 겁박에도 굴하지 않으며 또 그 겁박에 잘못 대처하지 않도록 도와주십니다(디모데후서 1:7). 성령님은 우리가 계속해서 나아갈 수 있도록, 그리고 살면서 하나님의 인도하시는 대로 따라갈 수 있도록 필요한 용기를 주십니다.

Keep on Going

Working in the corporate world allowed me to interact with many talented and levelheaded people. However, one project led by an out-of-town supervisor was an exception. Regardless of our team’s progress, this manager harshly criticized our work and demanded more effort during each weekly status phone call. These run-ins left me discouraged and fearful. At times, I wanted to quit.

It’s possible that Moses felt like quit- ting when he encountered Pharaoh during the plague of darkness. God had hurled eight other epic disasters at Egypt, and Pharaoh finally exploded, “[Moses,] get out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die” (EXODUS 10:28).

Despite this threat, Moses eventually was used by God to free the Israelites from Pharaoh’s control. “[By faith] Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible” (HEBREWS 11:27 NLT ). Moses overcame Pharaoh by believing that God would keep His promise of deliverance (EXODUS 3:17).

Today, we can rely on the promise that God is with us in every situation, supporting us through His Holy Spirit. He helps us resist the pressure of intimidation and wrong responses to it by granting us supernatural power, love, and self-control (2 TIMOTHY 1:7). The Spirit provides the courage we need to keep going and to follow God’s leading in our lives. - JENNIFER BENSON SCHULDT

비할 데 없는 삶

한 텔레비전 방송에서 십대들의 삶을 보다 잘 이해하기 위해 젊은 어른들이 출연하여 고등학생들의 역할을 맡았던 적이 있었습니다. 그 출연자들은 십대들이 주로 소셜 미디어를 통하여 자신들의 자존감을 느끼고 있다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 한 출연자가 관찰한 바에 따르면, “[학생들의] 자존감은 소셜 미디어에 올린 사진에 ‘좋아요’ 라는 반응을 얼마나 많이 받느냐에 따라 좌우되고 있습니다.” 다른 사람들로부터 인정을 받으려는 이 같은 욕구는 청소년들을 온라인에서의 일탈 행동으로 몰아갈 수도 있습니다.

남들에게 인정받고 싶어 하는 마음은 항상 있어 왔습니다. 창세기 29장에서 레아는 당연히 남편 야곱의 사랑을 몹시 바라고 있었습니다. 이 갈망은 그녀가 낳은 처음 세 아들의 이름에 외로움이 배어있는 것을 보면 잘 알 수 있습니다(31-34절). 그러나 슬프게도, 그렇게도 바랐던 레아의 소원을 야곱이 한 번이라도 들어주었다는 얘기는 성경에 나오지 않습니다.

넷째 아이를 낳으면서 레아는 남편 대신 하나님을 의지했습니다. 아들의 이름도 “찬양”이라는 뜻을 가진 유다라고 지었습니다(35절). 그녀는 마침내 하나님 안에서 자신의 존재의 의미를 찾게 된 것 같습니다. 유다의 후손으로 다윗 왕이, 또 그 후에 예수님이 탄생했으니, 그녀가 하나님의 구원 역사의 한 부분을 차지하게 된 것입니다.

우리의 존재의 의미를 확인해보기 위해 여러 가지 방법과 수단을 시도해볼 수 있습니다. 하지만 오직 예수님 안에서만 우리가 하나님의 자녀라는 정체성을, 곧 예수님과 함께 공동상속자이며 우리 하나님 아버지와 영원히 함께 거하게 될 사람이라는 사실을 깨닫게 됩니다. 바울이 기록한 것처럼 이 세상의 어떤 것도 “가장 고귀한 그리스도를 아는 지식”(빌립보서 3:8)과 비교할 수 없습니다.

Life Beyond Compare

In a TV program, young adults posed as high school students to better understand the lives of teenagers. They discovered that social media plays a central role in how teens measure their self-worth. One participant observed, “[The students’] self-value is attached to social media—it’s dependent on how many ‘likes’ they get on a photo.” This need for acceptance by others can drive young people to extreme behavior online.

The longing for being accepted by others has always been there. In Genesis 29, Leah understandably yearns for the love of her husband Jacob. It’s reflected in the names of her first three sons—all capturing her loneliness (VV 31–34). But, sadly, there’s no indication that Jacob ever gave her the acceptance she craved.

With the birth of her fourth child, Leah turned to God instead of her husband, naming her fourth son Judah, which means, “praise” (V 35). Leah, it seems, finally chose to find her significance in God. She became part of God’s salvation story: Judah was the ancestor of King David and, later, Jesus.

We can try to find our significance in many ways and things, but only in Jesus do we find our identity as children of God, co-heirs with Christ, and those who will dwell eternally with our heavenly Father. As Paul wrote, nothing in this world compares with the “surpassing worth of knowing Christ” (PHILIPPIANS 3:8). - PETER CHIN

노숙자로 살기

키이스 와써만은 사랑과 공감의 마음을 키우기 위해 1989년부터 해마다 며칠 동안 노숙자가 되기로 했습니다. ‘굿 웍스(선행)’ 라는 단체의 이사인 그는 살 집이 없는 사람들에 대한 “나의 관점과 이해를 넓히기 위해 거리에서 살려고 갑니다”라고 말합니다.

그가 돕는 사람들과 하나가 되어보려고 하는 시도는 예수님이 우리를 위해 하셨던 일들을 작게나마 보여주는 것 같다는 생각이 듭니다. 우주의 창조주이신 하나님께서 스스로 연약한 한 아기의 상태로 자신을 낮추시고, 인간으로 사시면서 우리와 마찬가지로 인생을 경험하시다가 결국은 인간의 손에 의해 죽임을 당하심으로써, 우리가 하나님과의 관계를 경험할 수 있게 하셨습니다.

히브리서 저자는 말합니다. “예수님도 [우리와] 마찬가지로 인간성을 지녔습니다. 이것은 자신의 죽음을 통해서 죽음의 권세를 잡은 마귀를 멸망시키기 위한 것입니다”(2:14, 현대인의 성경). 예수님은 천사들을 창조하셨음에도 그들보다 더 낮아지셨고(9절), 영원히 사시는 분임에도 인간이 되셔서 죽으셨습니다. 그리고 전능하신 하나님이신데도 우리를 위해 고난 받으셨습니다. 주님은 왜 그렇게 하셨을까요? 주님은 그렇게 하심으로써 우리가 시험 당할 때 도우실 수 있고 우리가 하나님과 화해할 수 있게 하셨던 것입니다(17-18절).

주님은 우리의 인간성을 이해하시고 우리가 죄에서 깨끗케 되는 길을 미리 마련해 놓으셨다는 것을 깨달아, 오늘 주님의 사랑을 체험하게 해 주소서.

Homeless by Choice

Keith Wasserman has chosen to be homeless for a few days every year since 1989 in order to grow in love and compassion. “I go to live on the streets to expand my perspective and understanding” of people who have no homes to live in, says Keith, executive director of Good Works, Inc.

I’m wondering whether Keith’s approach to become one with those he’s serving might be a small picture of what Jesus did for us. God Himself, the Creator of the universe, chose to confine Himself to the vulnerable state of a baby, to live as a human, to experience what we all experience, and to ultimately die at the hand of humans so that we can experience a relationship with God.

The writer of the book of Hebrews stated that Jesus “shared in [our] humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil” (2:14). Jesus was made lower than the angels, even though He’s their Creator (V 9). He became human and died, even though He’s immortal. And He suffered for us, even though He’s the all-powerful God. Why would He do this? So that He could help us when we go through temptations and bring reconciliation between us and God (VV 17–18).

May we experience His love today, knowing He understands our humanity and has already provided the way for us to be cleansed from our sins. - ESTERA PIROSCA ESCOBAR

지체를 예상하시오

‘누굴 놀리나?’그러지 않아도 늦었는데 앞에 있는 도로표지판을 보니 아무래도 내 도착 시간은 더 늦어질 것 같았습니다. “지체를 예상하시오.” 표지판 알림 말이었습니다. 차들이 모두 서행하고 있었습니다. 혼자 웃을 수밖에 없었습니다. 모든 것이 나의 일정에 따라 완벽하게 진행되기를 바랐고, 도로공사는 염두에 두지 않았기 때문입니다.

영적인 차원에서, 우리 삶을 지체 시키거나 아예 방향을 바꾸게 할 정도의 위기상황에 대비해 계획을 세우는 사람은 별로 없습니다. 그러나 생각해보니 형편상 내 삶의 방향을 크든 작든 간에 수정했던 때가 여러 번 있었던 것이 떠오릅니다. 지체되는 일은 언제나 일어납니다.

솔로몬은 “지체를 예상하시오”라는 표시판을 본 적이 없습니다. 그러나 잠언 16 장에서 그는 우리 인간들이 세우는 계획과 섭리로 행하시는 하나님의 인도하심을 서로 대조하고 있습니다. ‘메시지 성경’은 1절을 이렇게 풀어 씁니다. “사람들은 정교하게 계획을 세우지만, 결정하시는 분은 하나님이시다.” 솔로몬은 그 생각과 관련하여 9절에 이렇게 덧붙여 말합니다. 우리가 “마음으로 [우리의] 길을 계획할지라도 [우리의] 걸음을 인도하시는 이는 여호와시니라.” 바꾸어 말해 앞으로 무슨 일이 일어날지 우리가 나름대로 짐작하는 생각이 있더라도, 하나님께서는 때때로 다른 길로 인도해주신다는 것입니다.

이 영적 진리를 내가 왜 놓치고 있었던 것일까요? 나는 나름대로의 계획을 세우면서, 가끔씩 하나님의 계획이 무엇인지 묻는 것을 잊습니다. 그리고 일이 잘 안 풀리면 좌절합니다.

그러나 그런 걱정을 하는 대신, 우리는 솔로몬이 가르친 대로 기도하는 마음으로 하나님을 찾고 그분의 인도를 기다리며, 그분이 계속해서 우리가 갈 방향을 수정하시게 하면서, 하나님께서 한 걸음 한 걸음 우리를 인도해주신다는 순전한 믿음을 키워나갈 수 있습니다.

Expect Delays

Are you kidding me? I was already late. But the road sign ahead instructed me to adjust my expectations: “Expect Delays,” it announced. Traffic was slowing down. I had to laugh: I expect things to work on my ideal timeline; I don’t expect road construction.

On a spiritual level, few of us plan for crises that slow us down or reroute our lives. Yet, if I think about it, I can recall many times when circumstances redirected me—in big ways and small. Delays happen.

Solomon never saw a sign that said, “Expect Delays.” But in Proverbs 16, he does contrast our plans with God’s providential guidance. The Message paraphrases verse 1 as follows: “Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word.” Solomon restates that idea in verse 9, where he adds that even though we “plan [our] course . . . the LORD establishes [our] steps.” In other words, we have ideas about what’s supposed to happen, but sometimes God has another path for us.

How do I lose track of this spiritual truth? I make my plans, sometimes forgetting to ask Him what His plans are. I get frustrated when interruptions interfere.

But in place of that worrying, we could, as Solomon teaches, grow in simply trusting that God guides us, step-by-step, as we prayerfully seek Him, await His leading, and—yes—allow Him to continually redirect us. - ADAM HOLZ
