전투

지축을 흔드는 폭음과 함께 포탄이 주위에 떨어지는 그 시간, 한 젊은 병사가 이렇게 간절히 기도했습니다. “주님, 저를 여기서 구해주신다면 어머니가 그렇게 원하셨던 그 성경학교에 가겠습니다.” 하나님은 그의 결연한 기도를 귀하게 받아주셨습니다. 그래서 우리 아버지는 제2차 세계대전에서 살아남아 무디 성경학교에 갔고, 일생을 목회에 헌신하셨습니다.

또 한 전사도 그를 하나님께로 이끌었던 다른 종류의 위기를 겪고 있었습니다. 그런데 그의 경우, 문제는 그가 전투를 ‘회피했을’ 때 일어났습니다. 다윗 왕의 군대가 암몬 족속과 싸우고 있을 때 다윗은 궁전에서 다른 남자의
아내에게 계속 눈길을 주고 있었습니다 (사무엘하 11장 참조). 시편 39편에서 다윗은 그로 인한 끔찍한 죄로부터 회복되는 고통의 과정을 차례대로 기록하고 있습니다. 그는 이렇게 썼습니다. “내 고통이 한층 더하는구나...... 생각할수록 속이 답답하고 불이 붙는 것 같아” (2-3절, 현대인의 성경).

다윗의 상한 영혼은 이렇게 고백합니다. “여호와여 나의 종말과 연한이 언제까지인지 알게 하사 내가 나의 연약함을 알게 하소서”(4절). 새로운 시각을 가진 다윗은 절망하지 않았습니다. 그에게는 달리 의지할 곳이 없었습니다. “주여 이제 내가 무엇을 바라리요 나의 소망은 주께 있나이다”(7절). 다윗은 이러한 자신과의 싸움에서 살아남아 계속해서 하나님을 섬겼습니다.

우리가 무엇 때문에 기도생활을 하느냐는 것보다 어디에 초점을 두고 기도하느냐가 더 중요합니다. ‘하나님’은 우리의 소망의 근원입니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분과 우리의 마음을 나누기를 원하십니다.

The Battle

As artillery rounds fell around him with an earth-shaking whoomp , the young soldier prayed fervently, “Lord, if you get me through this, I’ll go to that Bible school Mom wanted me to attend.” God honored his focused prayer. My dad survived World War II, went to Moody Bible Institute, and invested his life in ministry.

Another warrior endured a different kind of crisis that drove him to God, but his problems arose when he avoided combat. As King David’s troops fought the Ammonites, David was back at his palace casting more than just a glance at another man’s wife (SEE 2 SAMUEL 11). In Psalm 39, David chronicles the painful process of restoration from the terrible sin that resulted. “The turmoil within me grew worse,” he wrote. “The more I thought about it, the hotter I got” (VV 2–3 NLT ).

David’s broken spirit caused him to reflect: “Show me, LORD , my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is” (V 4). Amid his renewed focus, David didn’t despair. He had nowhere else to turn. “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you” (V 7). David would survive this personal battle and go on to serve God.

What motivates our prayer life doesn’t matter as much as the focus of our prayer. God is our source of hope. He wants us to share our heart with Him. - TIM GUSTAFSON

보고 계시는 하나님

처음으로 안경을 썼을 때 세상이 아주 선명하게 보였습니다. 나의 눈은 가까이 있는 물체만 뚜렷하고 분명하게 보이는 근시입니다. 안경이 없으면 방 건너편에 있는 것이나 멀리 있는 것들은 흐릿하게 보입니다. 나는 열두 살 때 처음으로 안경을 썼는데, 칠판의 선명한 글씨와 나무에 매달려있는 작은 잎사귀들, 그리고 아마도 가장 중요한 것은 환하게 미소 짓는 얼굴을 볼 수 있어 아주 놀랐습니다.

내가 친구들에게 인사를 하면 친구들이 미소로 답하는 것을 보고, 내가 다른 사람들을 보는 것이 축복인 것처럼 남이 나를 보는 것도 큰 선물이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다.

노예였던 하갈은 매정한 주인 사라를 피해 도망쳤을 때 그 사실을 깨달았습니다. 혼자서 임신한 몸을 이끌고 누구 하나 도와주는 사람도 희망도 없이 사막으로 도망쳤을 때 하갈은 그녀의 세계에서 “아무것도 아닌 사람”이었습니다. 그러나 하나님께 보였을 때 그녀는 돌이켜 하나님을 볼 수 있는 힘을 얻었습니다. 그녀에게 하나님은 더 이상 모호한 개념이 아닌 실제적인 분이 되었고, 너무나 실제적이어서 하나님을 ‘엘 로이’, 곧 “나를 살피시는 하나님”이라고 불렀습니다. 하갈은 “나는 여기서 나를 살피시는 하나님을 뵈었다”(창세기 16:13)라고 말했습니다.

보시는 우리 하나님은 우리 한 사람 한 사람도 또한 보고 계십니다. 아무도 자신을 보지 않는다고, 혼자라고, 혹은 아무것도 아닌 존재 같다고 느끼십니까? 하나님은 당신을, 그리고 당신의 미래를 보고 계십니다. 그에 대한 반응으로 우리도 하나님 안에서 우리의 오늘과 미래에 대한 영원한 희망과 격려와 구원과 기쁨을 볼 수 있기를 바랍니다. 오늘 참되시고 살아 계신 유일하신 하나님을 볼 수 있는 이 놀라운 선물을 주신 하나님께 찬양 드립시다.

Seen by God

My first pair of eyeglasses opened my eyes to a bold world. I’m nearsighted, meaning objects close up are sharp and defined. Without my glasses, however, items across a room or in the distance are a blur. At age twelve, with my first pair of eyeglasses, I was shocked to see clearer words on blackboards, tiny leaves on trees and, perhaps most important, big smiles on faces.

As friends smiled back when I greeted them, I learned that to be seen was as great a gift as the blessing of seeing.

The slave Hagar realized that as she fled from her mistress Sarai’s unkindness. Hagar was a “nobody” in her culture, pregnant and alone, fleeing to a desert without help or hope. Seen by God, however, she was empowered, in return, to see Him. No longer a vague concept, God became real to her, so real that she gave God a name, El Roi, which means “You are the God who sees me.” She said, “I have now seen the One who sees me” (GENESIS 16:13).

Our seeing God sees each of us too. Feeling unseen, alone, or like a nobody? God sees you and your future. In return, may we see in Him our ever-present hope, encouragement, salvation, and joy—both for today and for our future. Praise Him today for this gift of amazing sight, to see the one true and Living God. - PATRICIA RAYBON

공로 인정하기

1960년대 초에 엄청 크고 슬픈 눈을 가진 사람이나 동물을 그린 특이한 그림들이 인기를 끌었습니다. 그런 작품들을 두고 “저질”이라느니 조잡하다고 여기는 사람들이 있었는가 하면, 보고 즐거워하는 사람들도 있었습니다. 그 화가의 남편이 아내의 작품을 홍보하기 시작하면서 그들은 큰 부자가 되었습니다. 그러나 작품에는 작가인 마가렛 킨의 서명이 없었고, 대신 마가렛의 남편이 아내의 작품을 자신의 것인 양 발표했습니다. 마가렛은 결혼생활이 파국에 이를 때까지 20년 동안 그 기만행위에 대해 두려운 마음으로 침묵을 지켰습니다. 결국 진짜 화가를 가리기 위해 법정에서 두 사람 사이에 “페인트칠을 걷어내는” 진실공방을 해야 했습니다.

그 남자의 기만은 분명 잘못된 것이었습니다. 그러나 예수님을 따르는 우리마저도 우리가 가진 재능이나 우리가 보여주는 리더십, 그리고 다른 사람에게 베푸는 친절한 행위까지 쉽게 우리의 공적으로 돌립니다. 하지만 그런 자질들은 오직 하나님의 은혜로만 가능합니다. 예레미야 9장에서 선지자는 백성들이 겸손하지 못하고 회개하는 마음이 없음을 한탄하고 있습니다. 선지자는 주님이 우리의 지혜나 힘, 부귀를 자랑하지 말고 오직 “사랑과 정의와 공의를 땅에 행하는”(24절) ‘그분’이 바로 주님이라는 것을 이해하고 알아야 한다고 하신 말씀을 기록하고 있습니다.

진정한 ‘화가’가 누구신지를 깨닫게 될 때 우리의 마음은 감사함으로 채워집니다. “온갖 좋은 은사와 온전한 선물이......아버지께로부터 내려오나니”(야고보서 1:17). 모든 공로와 찬사는 좋은 선물을 주시는 주님의 것입니다.

Giving Credit

In the early 1960s, some unusual paintings featuring a person or animal with huge, sad eyes became popular. Some considered the work “kitschy”—or tacky—but others delighted in it. As the artist’s husband began to promote his wife’s creations, the couple grew quite prosperous. But the artist’s signature—Margaret Keane—didn’t appear on her work. Instead, Margaret’s husband presented his wife’s work as his own. Margaret fearfully remained silent about the fraud for twenty years until the couple’s marriage ended. It took a courtroom “paint-off” between them to prove the true artist’s identity.

The man’s deception was clearly wrong, but even as followers of Jesus, we may find it easy to take credit for talents we possess, leadership skills we display, or even for our kind deeds to others. But those qualities are possible only because of God’s grace. In Jeremiah 9, we find the prophet lamenting the lack of humility and the unrepentant hearts of the people. He wrote that the Lord says we shouldn’t boast of our wisdom, our strength, or our riches, but only that we might understand and know that He is the Lord “who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth” (V 24).

Our hearts fill with gratitude as we realize the identity of the true Artist. “Every good and perfect gift is . . . from the Father” (JAMES 1:17). All of the credit, all of the praise belongs to the Giver of good gifts. - CINDY HESS KASPER

등을 켜고 살아가기

업무 차 동료 직원과 함께 250마일(약 400킬로미터) 떨어진 곳에 출장을 갔다가 늦은 시간이 되어서야 집으로 출발했습니다. 노화되어 가는 몸과 시력 때문에 야간 운전이 다소 우려는 되었지만, 그럼에도 내가 먼저 운전하기로 했습니다. 나는 운전대를 단단히 잡고 희미하게 비치는 길을 집중해서 바라보았습니다. 운전을 하는 동안 뒤에 오는 차들이 나의 앞 도로 쪽을 비춰줄 때 더 잘 보인다는 것을 알았습니다. 드디어 동료가 자기 차 운전대를 잡자 내 마음이 한결 가벼워졌습니다. 바로 그때 그는 내가 줄곧 전조등을 켜지 않고 안개등만 켠 채 운전했다는 것을 알게 되었습니다!

시편 119편은 하나님의 말씀이 우리의 매일의 삶을 비춰주는 빛이라는 것을 잘 알았던 사람이 쓴 위대한 작품입니다(105절). 그러나 우리는 내가 고속도로에서 겪었던 불편한 밤 운전과 비슷한 상황을 맞을 때가 얼마나 많습니까? 우리는 하나님의 말씀의 빛을 사용하는 것을 잊어버리기 때문에 잘 보려고 불필요하게 긴장하거나, 때로는 가장 좋은 길에서 벗어나기도 합니다. 시편 119편은 우리에게 의식적으로 “전조등 스위치를 켜는 것”을 권면하고 있습니다. 그렇게 할 때 우리에게 어떤 일이 일어날까요? 우리는 깨끗해지는데 필요한 지혜를 얻고(9-11절) 먼 길로 돌아가지 않는 새로운 동기와 용기를 얻게 됩니다(101-102절). 그리고 등을 켜고 살아갈 때 다음과 같은 시편 기자의 찬양이 우리의 찬양이 될 것입니다. “내가 주의 법을 어찌 그리 사랑하는지요 내가
그것을 종일 작은 소리로 읊조리나이다”(97절).

Living with the Lights On

A work assignment had taken my coworker and me on a 250-mile journey, and it was late when we began our trip home. An aging body with aging eyes makes me a bit uneasy about nighttime driving; nevertheless, I opted to drive first. My hands gripped the steering wheel and my eyes gazed intently at dimly lit roads. While driving I found I could see better when lights from vehicles behind me beamed on the highway ahead. I was much relieved when my friend eventually took the wheel of his vehicle. That’s when he discovered I had been driving with fog lights and not the headlights!

Psalm 119 is the masterful composition of one who understood that God’s Word provides us with light for everyday living (V 105). Yet, how often do we find ourselves in situations similar to my uncomfortable night on the highway? We needlessly strain to see, and we sometimes stray from the best paths because we forget to use the light of God’s Word. Psalm 119 encourages us to be intentional about “hitting the light switch.” What happens when we do? We find wisdom for purity (VV 9–11); we discover fresh motivation and encouragement for avoiding detours (VV 101–102). And when we live with the lights on, the psalmist’s praise is likely to become our praise: “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long” (V 97). - ARTHUR JACKSON

진정한 자기 찾기

‘나는 누구지?’ 이 말은 믹 잉크펜의 동화책 ‘낫싱’(‘아무것도 아니다’의 뜻)에서 색이 바랜 봉제 동물인형이 자신에게 던지는 질문입니다. 다락방의 먼지 쌓인 구석에 남겨진 이 동물인형은 이삿짐을 옮기는 사람들이 자기를 두고 ‘낫싱’ 이라고 부르자 자신의 이름이 ‘낫싱’이라고 생각합니다.

그 인형은 다른 동물인형들과 만나면서 기억이 되살아납니다. ‘낫싱’은 한 때 자신의 몸에 꼬리와 수염과 줄무늬가 있었다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 그러나 그가 집으로 가는 길을 찾는데 도와준 얼룩고양이를 만나고 나서야 비로소 ‘낫싱’은 자신이 토비라는 이름을 가진 봉제 고양이라는 사실을 기억해냅니다. 그의 주인은 그에게 새로운 귀와 꼬리, 수염, 줄무늬를 꿰매어주면서 그를 다정스럽게 회복시켜줍니다.

나는 이 책을 읽을 때마다 나 자신의 정체성에 대해 생각해봅니다. ‘나는 누구인가?’ 요한은 성도들에게 보내는 편지에서 하나님께서 우리를 그분의 자녀로 부르셨다고 했습니다 (요한1서 3:1). 우리는 하나님의 자녀라는 정체성을 완전히 이해하지는 못하지만, 예수님을 보게 될 때 우리의 모습이 그분과 같게 될 것입니다 (2절). 바로 고양이 토비처럼, 죄로 인해 손상되었지만 우리에게 원래 예정된 정체성을 우리도 언젠가 다시 회복하게 될 것입니다. 지금으로서는 우리가 그 정체성을 부분적으로만 알고 서로의 모습 속에서 하나님의 형상을 인식할 수 있을 뿐입니다. 그러나 예수님을 보게 될 그날, 우리는 하나님께서 우리를 위해 예정하신 정체성을 완전히 회복하게 될 것입니다. 우리는 새롭게 될 것입니다.

Discovering My True Self

Who am I? That’s the question a faded stuffed animal asks himself in the children’s book Nothing by Mick Inkpen. Left in a dusty corner of an attic, the animal hears movers call him “nothing” and thinks that’s his name: Nothing.

Encounters with other animals spark memories. Nothing realizes that he used to have a tail, whiskers, and stripes. But it’s not until he meets a tabby cat who helps him find his way home that
Nothing remembers who he truly is: a stuffed cat named Toby. His owner lovingly restores him, sewing on new ears, tail, whiskers, and stripes.

Whenever I read this book, I think about my own identity. Who am I? John, writing to believers, said that God has called us His children (1 JOHN 3:1). We don’t fully understand that identity, but when we see Jesus, we will be like him (V 2). Just like Toby the cat, we will one day be restored to the identity intended for us, which has been marred by sin. For now, we can understand that identity in part, and we can recognize the image of God in each other. But one day, when we see Jesus, we will be fully restored to the identity God intended for us. We will be made new.

사랑과 평강

극심한 슬픔 속에서도 우리 마음에는 강하고도 형언할 수 없는 평강이(빌립보서 4:7) 가득할 수 있다는 사실이 늘 놀랍습니다. 나는 이것을 최근 아버지의 장례식에서 경험하였습니다. 가슴 아파하며 위로하기 위해 찾아온 지인들의 긴 행렬 속에서 나는 한 친한 고등학교 친구를 보고는 마음이 편안해졌습니다. 그는 한마디 말도 없이 그냥 나를 오래도록 꼭
안아주었습니다. 슬픔 속에 힘들었던 그날, 말없이 이해해준 그 친구로 인해 처음으로 평강을 느꼈고 내 생각처럼 내가 혼자가 아니라는 사실을 확실히 깨닫게 되었습니다.

시편 16편에 있는 다윗의 표현처럼 하나님이 우리 삶 가운데 주시는 평강과 기쁨은 힘들 때 꾹 참으며 고통을 누른다고 얻게 되는 것이 아닙니다. 그것은 우리가 선하신 하나님 안에서 피난처를 찾을 때 경험하게 되는 선물과도 같은 것입니다 (1-2절).

우리는 죽음이 가져다주는 쓰라린 고통에서 시선을 다른 데로 돌릴 수도 있습니다. 어쩌면 여러 다른 ‘신들’을 찾으면 고통이 다가오지 못할 것이라고 생각해서 그러는지도 모릅니다. 그러나 고통을 회피하려는 노력이 결국은 더 깊은 고통을 초래할 뿐이라는 사실을 우리는 곧 알게 됩니다(4절).

다른 한편, 우리는 우리가 이해하지 못해도 하나님이 이미 우리에게 주신 삶이 비록 고통스러울 때라도 여전히 아름답고 좋은 것이라는 것을 신뢰하며 하나님께로 향할 수 있습니다(6-8절). 그리고 우리의 고통을 지나 죽음조차도 없애지 못할 평강과 기쁨으로 우리를 부드럽게 이끄시는 하나님의 친절한 팔에 우리 자신을 맡길 수 있습니다(11절).

Love and Peace

It always amazes me the way peace—powerful, unexplainable peace (PHILIPPIANS 4:7)—can somehow fill our hearts even in our deepest grief. I experienced this most recently at my father’s memorial service. As a long line of sympathetic acquaintances passed by offering their condolences, I was relieved to see a good high school friend. Without a word, he simply wrapped me in a long bear hug. His quiet understanding flooded me with the first feelings of peace within grief that difficult day, a powerful reminder that I wasn’t as alone as I felt.

As David describes in Psalm 16, the kind of peace and joy God brings into our lives isn’t caused by a choice to stoically stomp down the pain during hard times; it’s more like a gift we can’t help but experience when we take refuge in our good God (VV 1–2).

We could respond to the aching pain that death brings by distracting ourselves, perhaps thinking that turning to these other “gods” will keep the pain at bay. But sooner or later we’ll find that efforts to avoid our pain only bring deeper pain (V 4).

Or we could turn to God, trusting that even when we don’t understand, the life He’s already given us—even in its pain—is still beautiful and good (VV 6–8). And we can surrender to His loving arms that tenderly carry us through our pain into a peace and joy that even death can never quench (V 11). - MONICA BRANDS

예비된 선한 일

외국의 한 거리에서 웬 건장한 낯선 남자가 우리 부부 쪽으로 다가오자 우리는 겁이 나서 뒤로 물러섰습니다. 그렇지 않아도 우리의 휴가는 이미 엉망이 되어 있었습니다. 호된 질책도
들었고, 사기도 당하고 여러 번 갈취도 당했습니다. 또 다시 당하려나? 그런데 놀랍게도 그 남자는 그저 그 도시 어디에 가면 가장 좋은 구경을 할 수 있는지를 알려주려 했던 것입니다. 그리고는 우리에게 초콜릿 바를 주고는 웃으면서 떠나갔습니다. 그 작은 행위 하나로 우리는 그날 즐거운 시간을 가졌고 여행 전체를 잘 보낼 수 있었습니다. 그 일로 우리는 기분을 살려준 그 사람과 하나님께 감사하는 마음을 가졌습니다.

그 남자는 무슨 이유로 모르는 두 사람에게 관심을 가지고 다가온 걸까요? 그 사람은 누군가를 축복하기 위해 온종일 그 초콜릿 바를 들고 다녔던 것일까요?

아주 작은 행동 하나가 큰 미소를 가져다주고, 또 어쩌면 누군가를 하나님께로 인도할 수 있다는 것이 정말 놀랍습니다. 성경은 선한 일을 하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지 강조하고 있습니다(야고보서 2:17,24). 우리에게는 그것이 어렵게 여겨질지라도 하나님이 우리에게 그 일들을 할 수 있게 해주실 뿐 아니라 “전에 [그 일들을] 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데 행하게 하려” (에베소서 2:10) 하셨다는 확신이 있습니다.

어쩌면 하나님은 오늘 위로의 한 마디가 필요한 누군가를 “우연히 만나게”만들어 놓으셨든지, 아니면 누군가에게 도움의 손길을 내밀 기회를 마련해놓으셨는지도 모릅니다. 우리가 할 일은 오직 순종으로 반응하는 것입니다.

Good Works Prepared

When a burly stranger approached my wife and me on a street abroad, we shrunk back in fear. Our holiday had been going badly; we had been yelled at, cheated, and extorted from several times. Were we going to be shaken down again? To our surprise, the man just wanted to show us where to get the best view of his city. Then he gave us a chocolate bar, smiled, and left. That little gesture made our day—and saved the whole trip. It made us grateful—both to the man and to God for cheering us up.

What had made the man reach out to two strangers? Had he gone around with a chocolate bar the entire day, looking to bless someone with it?

It’s amazing how the smallest action can bring the biggest smile—and possibly direct someone to God. The Bible stresses the importance of doing good works (JAMES 2:17, 24). If that sounds challenging, we have the assurance that God not only enables us to do these works, but has even “prepared [them] in advance for us to do” (EPHESIANS 2:10).

Perhaps God has arranged for us to “bump into” someone who needs a word of encouragement today or has given us an opportunity to offer someone a helping hand. All we have to

우리를 변화시키는 사랑

예수님을 만나기 전, 나는 너무나 깊은 상처 때문에 더 이상의 상처를 받고 싶지 않아 누구와도 가까운 관계를 맺지 않으려고 했습니다. 엄마와만 가장 가까운 친구로 지내다가 남편인 알랜과 결혼했습니다. 결혼한 지 7년 되던 해 이혼 직전의 상황에서 나는 유치원에 다니는 자비어를 데리고 어느 교회의 예배에 참석했습니다. 신뢰하기는 두려웠지만 도움이 간절히 필요했던 나는 출구 가까이에 앉아있었습니다.

감사하게도 성도들이 다가와 우리 가 족 을 위 해 기 도 해 주 었 고 , 기도와 성경읽기를 통해 하나님과의 관계가 자라가는 법을 나에게 가르쳐주었습니다. 시간이 지나면서 주님과 성도들의 사랑으로 나는 변화되었습니다.

첫 예배에 참석한 지 2년이 지나, 나는 알랜과 자비어와 같이 세례를 받겠다고 신청했습니다. 얼마 후 매주 나누는 대화 가운데 어머니가 말했습니다. “너 달라졌구나. 예수님에 대해 좀 더 얘기해 주렴.” 몇 달 후 어머니도 예수님을 구주로 영접하였습니다.

예수님은 삶을 변화시키십니다. 사울의 삶이 그랬습니다. 그는 예수님을 만나기 전까지 가장 두려운 교회 박해자였습니다(사도행전 9:1-5). 사람들이 사울을 도와 예수님에 대해 좀 더 많이 알게 해주었습니다(17-19절). 사울의 급격한 변화는 성령의 권능으로 가르치는 그의 가르침에 신뢰를 더해주었습니다(20-22절).

우리의 예수님과의 첫 인격적인 만남은 사울의 경우처럼 그렇게 대단하지 않을 수 있습니다. 또 우리 삶의 변화도 그렇게 빠르고 급격하게 일어나지 않을 수 있습니다. 그렇지만 시간이 지나면서 예수님의 사랑이 우리를 어떻게 변화시키는지 사람들이 알기 때문에, 우리는 주님이 우리를 위해 행하신 일들을 다른 사람들에게 전할 기회를 얻게될 것입니다.

Love Changes Us

Before I met Jesus, I’d been wounded so deeply that I avoided close relationships in fear of being hurt more. My mom remained my closest friend, until I married Alan. Seven years later and on the verge of divorce, I toted our kindergartner, Xavier, into a church service. I sat near the exit door, afraid to trust but desperate for help.

Thankfully, believers reached out, prayed for our family, and taught me how to nurture a relationship with God through prayer and Bible reading. Over time, the love of Christ and His followers changed me.

Two years after that first church service, Alan, Xavier, and I asked to be baptized. Sometime later, during one of our weekly conversations, my mom said, “You’re different. Tell me more about Jesus.” A few months passed and she too accepted Christ as her Savior.

Jesus transforms lives . . . lives like Saul’s, one of the most feared persecutors of the church until his encounter with Christ (ACTS 9:1–5). Others helped Saul learn more about Jesus
(VV 17–19). His drastic transformation added to the credibility of his Spirit-empowered teaching (VV 20–22).

Our first personal encounter with Jesus may not be as dramatic as Saul’s. Our life transformation may not be as quick or drastic. Still, as people notice how Christ’s love is changing us over time, we’ll have opportunities to tell others what He did for us. - XOCHITL DIXON

마음의 이동

미국 인구조사국에 따르면 미국인들은 일생 살면서 평균 열한 번에서 열두 번 주소를 옮긴다고 합니다. 최근 한 해 동안 2800 만 명이 짐을 싸서 이사하고 새 거주지에 짐을 풀었습니다.

이스라엘 민족이 40년간 광야생활을 하는 동안 가족 국가 전체가 하나님 임재의 표시인 구름에 이끌려 새로이 거할 땅을 찾아 이곳저곳을 옮겨 다녔습니다. 이동에 관한 이야기가 너무나 반복되는 것을 읽다보면 한편의 코미디처럼 느껴지기도 합니다. 그 거대한 부족은 계속해서 그들 자신의 짐 뿐 아니라, 장막과 구름 속에 계신 하나님이 모세와 만났던 성막의 가구들을 싸고 풀기를 반복했습니다(출애굽기 25:22 참조).

오랜 세월이 지나 예수님이 이 이스라엘의 이동에 관한 이야기에 보다 완전한 의미를 부여하시게 됩니다. 구름으로 인도하지 않고 예수님이 직접 오신 것입니다. 주님이 “나를 따라오라”(마태복음 4:19)고
말씀하심으로 가장 중요한 주소 이전은 마음 안의 길에서 일어난다는 것을 보여주기 시작하셨습니다. 주님은 자신을 따르는 자들과 적들을 모두다 로마의 십자가 밑으로 인도하심으로 구름과 성소에
머무르시던 하나님이 우리를 구원하시려고 얼마나 멀리까지 가시는지를 보여주셨습니다.

주소를 바꾸는 것처럼 마음의 이동도 안정적이지 않습니다. 그러나 언젠가 우리는 하나님 아버지 집의 창문을 통해 예수님께서 우리를 끝까지 인도해주셨음을 보게 될 것입니다.

Moves of the Heart

According to the US Census Bureau, Americans move from one address to another an average of eleven to twelve times during the course of a lifetime. In a recent year, 28 million people packed up, moved, and unpacked under a new roof.

During Israel’s forty years in the wilderness, the cloud of God’s presence led a whole family nation to make one move after another in anticipation of a new homeland. The account is so repetitious, it reads almost like a comedy. Over and over the huge family packed and unpacked not only its own belongings but also the tent and furnishings of the tabernacle, where the God of the cloud met with Moses (SEE EXODUS 25:22).

Many years later, Jesus would give fuller meaning to the story of Israel’s moving days. Instead of leading from a cloud, He came in person. When He said, “Follow me” (MATTHEW 4:19), He began showing that the most important changes of address happen on roads of the heart. By leading both friends and enemies to the foot of a Roman cross, He showed how far the God of the cloud and tabernacle would go to rescue us.

Like changes of address, such moves of the heart are unsettling. But someday, from a window in our Father’s house, we’ll see that Jesus led us all the way. - MART DEHAAN

오직 내가 볼 수 있는 것

몹시 추운 어느 겨울날 크리스타는 호숫가에 있는 눈 덮인 아름다운 등대를 바라보며 서 있었습니다. 사진을 찍으려 전화기를 꺼내들었을 때 안경에 김이 서려 아무것도 볼 수 없었던 그녀는 사진기를 등대 쪽으로 향하고 각도를 달리 하여 스냅 사진 세 장을 찍었습니다. 나중에 그 사진들을 보면서, 사진기가 “셀카 사진”을 찍도록 설정되어 있었다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그녀는 웃으며 말했습니다. “세 번 다 초점이 내게 맞춰져 있었네. 보이는 건 나밖에 없잖아.” 크리스타의 사진처럼 우리 또한 비슷한 실수를 한다는 것이 생각났습니다. 우리는
너무나 자신에게만 초점을 맞추어 하나님의 계획이라는 더 큰 그림을 보지 못합니다.

예수님의 사촌 요한은 그의 초점이 자기 자신이 아니라는 것을 분명히 알고 있었습니다. 처음부터 그는 자신의 위치나 사명이 다른 사람들을 하나님의 아들 예수님께 향하게 하는 것임을 알고 있었습니다. 요한은 예수님이 그와 그의 제자들을 향해 오시는 것을 보고 “보라 하나님의 어린 양이로다”(요한복음 1:29)라고 말하고는, 이어서 “내가 와서 물로 세례를 베푸는 것은 그를 이스라엘에 나타내려 함이라”(31절) 라고 말했습니다. 나중에 요한의 제자들이 예수님을 따르는 사람들이 늘어나고 있다고 말하자 요한은 이렇게 말했습니다. “내가 말한바 나는 그리스도가 아니요 그의 앞에 보내심을 받은 자라고 한 것을 증언할 자는 너희니라......그는 흥하여야 하겠고 나는 쇠하여야 하리라”(3:28-30).

우리 삶의 중심점이 예수님이 되고, 온 마음 다해 그분을 사랑하는 것이 되기를 기도합니다.

All I Can See

Krista stood in the freezing cold on a winter day, looking at the beautiful snow-encased lighthouse along the lake. As she pulled out her phone to take pictures, her glasses fogged over. She couldn’t see a thing so she decided to point her camera toward the lighthouse and snapped three pictures at different angles. Looking at them later, she realized the camera had been set to take “selfies.” She laughed as she said, “My focus was me, me, and me. All I saw was me.” Krista’s photos got me thinking of a similar mistake: We can become so self-focused we lose sight of the bigger picture of God’s plan.

Jesus’s cousin John clearly knew his focus wasn’t himself. Right from the start he recognized that his position or calling was to point others to Jesus, the Son of God. “Look, the Lamb of God!” he said when he saw Jesus coming toward him and his followers (JOHN 1:29). He continued, “The reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed” (V 31). When John’s disciples later reported that Jesus was gaining followers, John said, “You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.’ . . . He must become greater; I must become less” (3:28–30).

May the central focus of our lives be Jesus and loving Him with our whole heart. - ANNE CETAS
