조심하세요!

나는 남부의 따뜻한 도시에서 자랐습니다. 그래서 북부로 이사 온 후 눈이 오는 몇 달 동안 안전하게 운전하는 법을 배우는데 꽤 시간이 걸렸습니다. 혹독했던 첫 겨울에 나는 세 번이나 눈 더미에 갇혔습니다! 하지만 몇 년 간 연습하고 나니 겨울에 운전하는 것이 편하게 느껴지기 시작했습니다. 사실 어느 정도 너무 편하게 느껴서 더 이상 조심하지 않았습니다. 그런데 바로 그때 나는 검은 색의 얼음 더미를 치고는 길옆의 전신주 쪽으로 미끄러졌습니다.

감사하게도 아무도 다치지는 않았지만 그날 중요한 것을 배웠습니다. 편하다고 느끼는 것이 얼마나 위험할 수 있는지를 깨달은 것입니다. “자동조종장치”로 가는 차처럼 조심하지 않고 운전하고 다녔던 것입니다.

우리의 영적 삶에서도 이렇게 조심할 필요가 있습니다. 베드로는 성도들에게 생각 없이 삶을 흘러가는 대로 살지 말고 “깨어 있으라” (베드로전서 5:8)고 경고합니다. 마귀는 우리를 무너뜨리려고 적극적으로 애쓰고 있기 때문에 우리 또한 적극적으로 유혹에 대항하고 믿음 안에 굳게 서야 합니다(9절). 하지만 그것은 우리 스스로 해야만 하는 일이 아닙니다. 하나님은 우리의 고난 중에 함께하시고 결국에는 우리를 “굳건하게 하시며 강하게 하시며 터를 견고하게”(10절) 하겠다고 약속하십니다. 주님의 능력으로 우리는 주님을 따르며 악에 대항하는 일에 근신하고 깨어있는 것을 배우게 됩니다.

Watch Out!

I grew up in warm southern cities, so when I moved north, it took me a while to learn how to drive safely during the long, snowy months. During my first hard winter, I ended up stranded in a snowdrift three times! But after several years of practice, I began to feel comfortable driving in wintry conditions. In fact, I felt a little too comfortable. I stopped being as vigilant. And that’s when I hit a patch of black ice and skidded into a telephone pole on the side of the road!

Thankfully, no one was hurt, but I learned something important that day. I realized how dangerous it can be to feel comfortable. Instead of being watchful, I had gone on “autopilot.”

We need to practice that same kind of vigilance in our spiritual lives. Peter warns believers not to glide thoughtlessly through life, but to “be alert” (1 Peter 5:8). The devil is actively trying to destroy us, and so we too need to be active, resisting temptation and standing firm in our faith (v. 9). That’s not something we have to do on our own though. God promises to be with us in our sufferings and, ultimately, to make us “strong, firm and steadfast” (v. 10). By His power, we learn to remain watchful and alert in resisting evil and following Him.- Amy Peterson

상황 파악

크리스마스 휴가 기간에 우리 가족 다섯은 모두 로마에 머물렀습니다. 나는 그렇게 많은 사람들이 한 곳에 숨이 막히게 모여 있는 것을 본 적이 없습니다. 많은 인파를 뚫고 바티칸이나 콜로세움 같은 명소를 거쳐 가면서 나는 아이들에게 “상황 파악”을 잘 하여 지금 어디에 있고 옆에 누가 있으며 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 주의 깊게 살필 것을 반복해서 강조했습니다. 우리는 국내외를 막론하고 안전하지 않은 세상 속에 살고 있습니다. 또한 휴대폰이나 이어폰을 쓰게 되면서 아이들은(어른 또한) 주변 상황을 잘 파악하지 못하곤 합니다.

‘상황 파악.’ 이것은 바울이 빌립보서 1:9-11에 기록한 빌립보 성도들을 위한 기도이기도 합니다. 바울은 그들이 누가/ 무엇을/어디에 라는 것에 근거하여 자신들의 상황을 분별하기를 바랐습니다. 하지만 바울은 개인의 안위를 위하는 것보다는, 하나님의 거룩한 백성들이 그리스도의 사랑을 받은 선한 청지기가 되고, “지극히 선한 것”을 분별하며, “진실하여 허물없이” 살고, 예수님만으로 말미암는 의의 열매로 가득 채워지는 더 큰 목적을 가지고 기도했습니다. 이와 같은 삶은 하나님이 우리 삶 속에서 어떤 분이신지를(누가) 깨닫고 점점 더 그분을 의지하는 것이(무엇) 그분을 기쁘시게 한다는 것을 깨닫는 데서 비롯됩니다. 그러면 우리는 모든 상황에서(어디) 그분의 넘쳐흐르는 위대한 사랑을 나눌 수 있습니다.

Situational Awareness

My family, all five of us, found ourselves in Rome over the Christmas holidays. I don’t know when I’ve ever seen more people jammed together in one place. As we snaked our way through crowds to see sights like the Vatican and the Coliseum, I repeatedly emphasized to my kids the practice of “situational awareness”—pay attention to where you are, who’s around you, and what’s going on. We live in a day when the world, at home and abroad, isn’t a safe place. And with the use of cell phones and ear buds, kids (and adults for that matter) don’t always practice an awareness of surroundings.

Situational awareness. This is an aspect of Paul’s prayer for the believers in Philippi recorded in Philippians 1:9–11. His desire for them was an ever-increasing discernment as to the who/what/where of their situations. But rather than some goal of personal safety, Paul prayed with a grander purpose that God’s holy people might be good stewards of the love of Christ they’d received, discern “what is best,” live “pure and blameless,” and be filled with good qualities that only Jesus can produce. This kind of living springs from an awareness that God is the who in our lives, and our increasing reliance on Him is what brings Him pleasure. And in any and all situations is where we can share from the overflow of His great love. - John Blase

설명할 수 없는 사랑

우리 교인 중의 몇 사람이 여섯 번째 생일을 맞이하는 우리 아들을 깜짝 놀래주려고 풍선으로 주일학교 교실을 꾸미고 작은 테이블에 생일 케이크를 준비했습니다. 아들이 문을 열자 모두 소리쳤습니다. “생일 축하해!”

조금 뒤 내가 케이크를 자르고 있을 때 아들이 와서 귓속말을 했습니다. “엄마, 왜 여기 있는 사람들이 다 날 사랑하는 거야?” 사실 나도 똑같은 생각을 하고 있었습니다! 그들은 우리를 안 지 겨우 6개월밖에 안 됐는데 마치 오래된 친구처럼 대해주었습니다.

우리 아들을 사랑하는 그들의 모습은 우리를 향한 하나님의 사랑을 보여 주었습니다. 하나님이 왜 우리를 사랑 하시는지 이해할 수는 없지만, 하나님은 우리를 사랑하시고 그 사랑을 거저 주십니다. 우리가 하나님의 사랑을 받을만한 일을 한 적이 없는데도 그분은 우리를 아낌없이 사랑하십니다. 성경은 “하나님은 사랑이심이라”(요한1서 4:8)고 말합니다. 그것은 하나님의 성품의 일면입니다.

하나님께서 우리에게 그분의 사랑을 부어주셨기에 우리도 그 사랑을 다른 이들에게 보여주어야 합니다. 예수님은 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라 너희가 서로 사랑하면 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라” (요한복음 13:34-35).

우리 교회의 작은 공동체의 사람들이 우리를 사랑하는 것은 하나님의 사랑이 그들 안에 있기 때문입니다. 그 사랑이 빛을 발하여 그들이 예수님의 제자라는 것을 말해줍니다. 우리가 하나님의 사랑을 다 헤아릴 수는 없지만 다른 이들에게 그 사랑을 부어줌으로써 말로 설명할 수 없는 그 사랑의 본이 될 수 있습니다.

Unexplainable Love

Our small congregation decided to surprise my son on his sixth birthday. The church members decorated his Sunday school classroom with balloons and set up a small table with a cake on it. When my son opened the door, everyone shouted, “Happy birthday!”

Later on, as I was cutting the cake, my son came over and whispered in my ear, “Mom, why does everyone here love me?” I had the same question! These people had known us for only six months but were treating us as longtime friends.

Their love for my son reflected God’s love for us. We can’t understand why He loves us, but He does—and His love is freely given. We’ve done nothing to deserve His love, and yet He lavishly loves us. Scripture tells us: “God is love” (1 John 4:8). It’s part of who He is.

God has poured out His love on us so we can show this same love to others. Jesus told His disciples, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34–35).

The people in our small church community love us because God’s love is in them. It shines through and identifies them as followers of Jesus. We can’t comprehend God’s love fully, but we can pour it out on others—being examples of His unexplainable love. - Keila Ochoa

가져다 쓰는 축복

다같이 모여 점심식사 기도를 할 때 친구 제프가 이렇게 기도했습니다. “하나님 아버지, 우리가 주님의 공기를 마시고 주님의 음식을 먹을 수 있게 해주셔서 감사합니다.” 제프는 최근까지 직장을 잃어 어려운 상황에 있었기 때문에 하나님을 마음 깊이 신뢰하며 모든 것이 그분의 소유라는 것을 인정하는 그의 모습은 내게 깊은 감동을 주었습니다. 나는 문득 이런 생각을 하였습니다. ‘내 삶의 가장 기본적이고 일상적인 것들이 다 하나님의 것이며, 나는 그저 그분이 허락하셔서 쓸 뿐이라는 것을 참으로 알고 있는가?’

예루살렘 성전 건축을 위해 이스라엘 백성들이 재물을 바쳤을 때 다윗 왕은 이렇게 기도했습니다. “나와 내 백성이 무엇이기에 이처럼 즐거운 마음으로 드릴 힘이 있었나이까 모든 것이 주께로 말미암았사오니 우리가 주의 손에서
받은 것으로 주께 드렸을 뿐이니이다.” 그는 이어서 말했습니다. “이 모든 물건이......다 주의 것이니이다”(역대상 29:14,16).

성경은 재산을 모으고 생계를 꾸리는 능력까지도 하나님께로 말미암는다고 말합니다(신명기 8:18). 우리의 모든 소유가 빌려온 것임을 이해하게 되면 세상 물질에 대한 애착도 놓을 수 있고, 날마다 받는 은혜에 깊이 감사하여 열린 마음과 열린 손으로 거리낌 없이 나누며 살 수 있게 됩니다.

하나님은 우리를 너무나 사랑하셔서 “우리 모두를 위해” 그의 아들까지 주실 만큼 아낌없이 주시는 분입니다(로마서 8:32). 우리가 받은 것이 너무 많기에 크고 작은 모든 축복에 대해 하나님께 진심 어린 감사를 드릴 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Borrowed Blessings

As we bowed our heads over lunch, my friend Jeff prayed: “Father, thank You for letting us breathe Your air and eat Your food.” Jeff had just been through a difficult job loss, so his heartfelt trust in God and recognition that everything belongs to Him profoundly moved me. I found myself thinking: Do I honestly understand that even the most basic, everyday things in my life are really God’s, and He’s simply letting me use them?

When King David received offerings from the people of Israel for building the temple in Jerusalem, he prayed, “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.” Then he added, “All of it belongs to you” (1 CHRONICLES 29:14, 16).

Scripture tells us that even “the ability to produce wealth” and earn a living come from Him (DEUTERONOMY 8:18). Understanding that all we have is borrowed encourages us to loosen our grip on the stuff of this world and live with open hands and hearts—sharing freely because we’re deeply thankful for the kindnesses we receive daily.

God is a generous giver—so loving that He even gave up His Son “for us all” (ROMANS 8:32). Because we have been given so much, may we give Him our heartfelt thanks for blessings small and large. - JAMES BANKS

가장 위대한 선물

오랫동안 내게 셀 수 없이 많은 격려 카드와 사려 깊은 선물들을 주어왔던 친구 바바라는 내가 예수님을 나의 구주로 받아들였다고 말했을 때, 지금까지 준 선물 중 가장 큰 선물을 내게 주었습니다. 바로 나의 첫 성경책입니다. 그녀는 말했습니다. “네가 하나님과 매일 만나고, 성경을 읽고, 기도하며, 그분을 신뢰하고 순종하면 하나님께 더 가까이 다가가고 영적으로 성장해갈 거야.” 바바라가 하나님을 더 잘 알 수 있게 이끌어주면서 나의 삶은 바뀌었습니다.

바바라를 생각하면 빌립 사도가 떠오릅니다. 예수님이 빌립에게 주님을 따르라고 청하자(요한복음 1:43), 그는 즉시 친구 나다나엘에게 예수님이야말로 “모세가 율법책에 기록하였고, 또 예언자들이 기록한 그분”(45절, 새번역)이라고 말했습니다. 나다나엘이 의심하는데도 빌립은 친구와 논쟁하거나 비판하지 않고 친구를 포기하지도 않았습니다. 빌립은 친구가 예수님을 직접 만나보기를 권했을 뿐입니다. “와서 보라”(46절) 고 한 것이 전부였습니다.

나는 나다나엘이 예수님을 “하나님의 아들”이요 “이스라엘의 임금”(49절)이라고 고백했을 때 빌립이 얼마나 기뻐했을지 상상할 수 있습니다. 예수님이 앞으로 보게 될 거라고 약속하신 “더 큰 일들”을 그의 친구도 보게 되리라는 것을 알게 되니 얼마나 큰 축복인지요(50-51절).

성령님은 우리와 하나님과의 친밀한 관계를 주도하시며, 믿음으로 응답하는 모든 사람 안에 거하십니다. 하나님은 우리가 그분을 개인적으로 알 수 있게 해주실 뿐만 아니라, 우리가 다른 사람들을 청하여 성령과 말씀을 통해 매일 하나님을 만날 수 있도록 해 주십니다. 그래서 예수님을 더 잘 알게 하려는 초대야말로 우리가 주고받을 수 있는 가장 큰 선물입니다.

The Greatest Gift

Over the years, my friend Barbara has given me countless encouraging cards and thoughtful presents. After I told her I’d received Jesus as my Savior, she handed me the greatest gift she’d ever given me—my first Bible. She said, “You can grow closer to God and mature spiritually by meeting with Him daily, reading Scripture, praying, and trusting and obeying Him.” My life changed when
Barbara invited me to get to know God better.

Barbara reminds me of the apostle Philip. After Jesus invited Philip to follow Him (JOHN 1:43), the apostle immediately told his friend Nathanael that Jesus was “the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote” (V 45). When Nathanael doubted, Philip didn’t argue, criticize, or give up on his friend. He simply invited him to meet Jesus face to face. “Come and see,” he said (V 46).

I can imagine Philip’s joy when he heard Nathanael declare Jesus as “the Son of God” and “the king of Israel” (V 49). What a blessing to know his friend wouldn’t miss out on seeing the “greater things” Jesus promised they’d witness (VV 50–51).

The Holy Spirit initiates our intimate relationship with God and then lives in all who respond in faith. He enables us to know Him personally and to invite others to encounter Him daily through His Spirit and the Scriptures. An invitation to know Jesus better is a great gift to receive and give. - XOCHITL DIXON

지으신 분과 움직이시는 분

확대경과 족집게를 사용하여 일하는 스위스 시계제작자 필립은 명품 기계식 시계의 미세부품들을 어떻게 분해하고 청소하며 재조립하는지 내게 꼼꼼히 설명해주었습니다. 필립은 시계의 모든 복잡한 부품들 중에서 시계에서 필수 부품인 주 태엽을 보여주었습니다. 주 태엽은 모든 톱니바퀴를 움직여 시계가 시간을 정확하게 맞출 수 있게 해주는 부품입니다. 이것이 없으면 아무리 뛰어난 설계를 했어도 시계는 작동되지 않습니다.

히브리서에 나오는 아름다운 신약 성구에서 저자는 하나님께서 예수님과 함께 하늘과 땅을 창조하셨음을 유려한 표현으로 찬미하고 있습니다. 명품시계만큼이나 복잡한 우주의 온갖 미세한 부분을 예수님이 창조하셨습니다(히브리서 1 : 2 ) . 광활한 태양계로부터 각자 독특한 우리의 손가락 지문에 이르기까지 모든 것을 주님이 만드신 것입니다.

그렇지만 예수님은 창조주 이상으로, 시계의 주 태엽처럼 창조물이 살아 움직이고 번성케 하는데 필수적인 분이십니다. 주님이 임재하심으로 끊임없이 “그의 능력의 말씀으로 만물을 붙드시며”(3절), 주님의 모든 창조물이 놀랍도록 복잡한 가운데서도 서로 함께 일할 수 있는 것입니다.

오늘 창조의 아름다움을 경험할 기회가 있으면 “만물이 그분 안에 함께 서”(골로새서 1:17) 있다는 것을 기억하십시오. 우주를 창조하고 움직이시는 예수님의 중심 역할을 깨달아, 주님이 우리에게 항상 베풀어주심을 감사하며 즐거운 마음과 찬양으로 응답하게 하소서.

Creator and Sustainer

Working with a magnifying glass and tweezers, Swiss watchmaker Phillipe meticulously explained to me how he takes apart, cleans, and reassembles the tiny parts of specialty mechanical watches. Looking at all the intricate pieces, Phillipe showed me the essential component of the timepiece, the mainspring. The mainspring is the component that moves all the gears to allow the watch to keep time. Without it, even the most expertly designed watch will not function.

In a beautiful New Testament passage found in the book of Hebrews, the writer eloquently praises Jesus for being the one through whom God created the heavens and the earth. Like the intricacy of a specialty watch, every detail of our universe was created by Jesus (HEBREWS 1:2). From the vastness of the solar system to the uniqueness of our fingerprints, all things were made by Him.

But more than the Creator, Jesus, like a clock’s mainspring, is essential for the function and flourishing of creation. His presence continually “[sustains] all things by his powerful word” (V 3), keeping all that He has created working together in all its amazing complexity.

As you have opportunity to experience the beauty of creation today, remember that “in him all things hold together” (COLOSSIANS 1:17). May the recognition of Jesus’s central role in both creating and sustaining the universe result in a joyful heart and a response of praise as we acknowledge His ongoing provision for us. - LISA SAMRA

밝은 빛

2015년 여름, 케냐 나이로비의 빈민가 마타레를 방문한 우리 교회 선교팀은 모두 진지해졌습니다. 우리가 찾아간 학교 시설은 지저분한 바닥과 녹슨 철제 벽, 그리고 나무 의자가 전부였습니다. 그런데 이렇게 극도로 열악한 환경 가운데 한 사람이 매우 돋보였습니다.

브릴리언트(멋진, 눈부신 이라는 뜻) 라는 이름을 가진 여인이었는데, 그 이름이 더 이상 잘 어울릴 수 없었습니다. 그녀는 자기가 맡은 일에 걸맞은 즐거움과 강한 의지를 가진 초등학교 선생님이었습니다. 화려한 옷차림을 하고 기쁜 마음으로 아이들을 가르치며 격려하는 여선생님의 모습은 정말 아름다웠습니다.

브릴리언트가 자기 주변에 밝은 빛을 발하는 모습은 초대교회 시절 바울이 빌립보 교회 성도들에게 보낸 편지에서 말한, 그들이 이 세상에 보여줘야 할 모습과 닮았습니다. 영적으로 어두운 이 세상 환경과 맞서서 주 예수를 믿는 사람들은 “하늘의 별처럼”(빌립보서 2:15, 현대인의 성경) 빛나야 합니다. 우리의 사명은 바뀌지 않았습니다. 밝은 빛은 어디서나 필요합니다! “자기의 기쁘신 뜻을 위하여 너희에게 소원을 두고 행하게 하시는”(13절) 하나님을 통해 예수님을 믿는 사람들은, 예수님이 묘사한 주를 믿는 사람들과 꼭 같은 방식으로 빛을 발할 수 있다고 하니 얼마나 힘이 되는지 모릅니다. 주님은 지금도 우리에게 말씀하십니다. “너희는 세상의 빛이라......이같이 너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라” (마태복음 5:14-16).

Bright Lights

In the summer of 2015, a group from our church was sobered by what we saw in Mathare, one of the slums in Nairobi, Kenya. We visited a school with dirt floors, rusting metal walls, and wooden benches. But against the backdrop of extremely humble surroundings, one person stood out.

Her name was Brilliant, and the name couldn’t have fit her better. She was an elementary school teacher who possessed joy and determination that matched her mission. Colorfully dressed, her appearance and the joy with which she instructed and encouraged the children were stunning.

The bright light Brilliant brought to her surroundings resembles the way Christians in Philippi were to be positioned in their world when Paul wrote to them in the first century. Against the background of a spiritually needy world, believers in the Lord Jesus were to shine “like stars in the sky” (PHILIPPIANS 2:15). Our assignment hasn’t changed. Bright lights are needed everywhere! How encouraging it is to know that through the One “who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (V 13) believers in Jesus can sparkle in ways that fit Jesus’s description of those who follow Him. To us He still says, “You are the light of the world. . . . Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (MATTHEW 5:14–16). - ARTHUR JACKSON

우리를 두르시는 하나님

붐비는 공항에서 한 젊은 엄마가 혼자 쩔쩔매고 있었습니다. 걸음마 아기가 떼를 쓰며 발광하는데, 악을 쓰고 발길질을 하면서 비행기를 타지 않겠다고 했습니다. 게다가 만삭의 몸인 그 젊은 엄마는 아기를 달래다 못해 바닥에 주저앉아 두 손으로 얼굴을 감싼 채 울기 시작했습니다.

그때 갑자기 상관없는 여성 여행객 예닐곱 명이 그 엄마와 아이를 둘러싸고 간식과 물을 건네며 따뜻하게 안아주고 동요도 불러주었습니다. 그녀들의 사랑의 써클은 엄마와 아이를 진정시켜 비행기에 탈 수 있게 했습니다. 물론 그 여성 여행객들도 각자 자기 자리로 돌아갔습니다. 자신들이 한 일에 대해서 의논할 필요도 없었지만, 그들은 꼭 필요한 때에 그 젊은 엄마에게 힘이 되었다는 사실은 알고 있었습니다.

이 일은 시편 125편의 아름다운 진리의 모습을 보여주고 있습니다. “산들이 예루살렘을 두름과 같이 여호와께서 그 백성을 지금부터 영원까지 두르시리로다”라고 2절은 말합니다. 그 모습을 보면 복잡한 예루살렘 도시가 실제로 어떻게 감람산, 시온산, 모리아산과 같은 산들로 둘러싸여 있는지 떠올려줍니다.

이처럼 하나님은 “지금부터 영원까지” 우리 영혼을 도우시고 지키시면서 그분의 백성들을 두르고 계십니다. 그러므로 힘든 날에는 시편 기자가 말한 것처럼 “산을 향하여” 눈을 드십시오(시편 121:1). 하나님은 능력 있는 도움과 변치 않는 소망과 영원한 사랑을 지니고 기다리고 계십니다.

Surrounded by God

In a busy airport, a young mother struggled alone. Her toddler was in full tantrum mode—screaming, kicking, and refusing to board their plane. Overwhelmed and heavily pregnant, the burdened young mother finally gave up, sinking to the floor in frustration, covering her face, and starting to sob.

Suddenly six or seven women travelers, all strangers, formed a circle around the young mother and her child—sharing snacks, water, gentle hugs, and even a nursery song. Their loving circle calmed the mother and child, who then boarded their plane. The other women returned to their seats, not needing to discuss what they had done, but knowing their support had strengthened a young mother exactly when she needed it.

This illustrates a beautiful truth from Psalm 125. “As the mountains surround Jerusalem,” says verse 2, “so the LORD surrounds his people.” The image reminds us how the bustling city of Jerusalem is, indeed, flanked by surrounding hills—among them the Mount of Olives, Mount Zion, and Mount Moriah.

In this same way, God surrounds His people—supporting and standing guard over our souls “both now and for evermore.” Thus, on tough days, look up, “unto the hills,” as the psalmist puts it (PSALM 121:1 KJV ). God awaits with strong help, steady hope, and everlasting love. - PATRICIA RAYBON

아버지를 기억하며

우리 아버지를 생각하면, 집 밖에서 망치질이나 정원을 손질하시는 모습, 그리고 신기한 연장과 도구들로 가득 찬 어수선한 아래층 작업실에서 일하시던 모습들이 가장 먼저 떠오릅니다. 아버지는 언제나 일감 때문에 손이 쉴 새가
없으셨습니다. 어떤 때는 차고나 뒤뜰 마루, 새장 등을 만드셨고, 어떤 때는 자물쇠를 고치셨으며, 보석이나 스테인드글라스 작품을 디자인하실 때도 있었습니다.

그런 아버지를 생각하면 문득 항상 일하시느라 바쁘신 창조주 하나님 아버지가 떠오릅니다. 태초에 “[하나님이] 땅의 기초를 세우셨고......이 땅을 설계하셨으며......그 날 새벽에 별들이 함께 노래하였고, 천사들은 모두 기쁨으로 소리를 질렀습니다”(욥기 38:4-7, 새번역). 하나님의 창조물은 어느 것이나 예술 작품이며 걸작이었습니다. 하나님은 숨 막히도록 아름다운 세상을 창조하시고 “아주 좋다”고 선언하셨습니다(창세기 1:31).

그 안에 당신과 나도 포함됩니다. 하나님은 우리를 정교하고 복잡하게 세세히 지으시고(시편 139:13-16), 하나님의 형상을 지닌 우리에게 땅과 땅 위의 피조물들을 다스리고 돌보는, 일의 목적과 의욕을 심어주셨습니다(창세기 1:26-28; 2:15). 우리가 무엇을 하든, 그것이 직업상의 일이건 여가를 즐기는 일이건, 하나님은 우리에게 힘을 주셔서 우리가 주님을 위하여 온 마음을 다해 헌신할 일감을 주십니다.

우리가 하는 일마다 하나님을 기쁘게 해드릴 수 있게 하소서.

Remembering My Father

When I remember my dad, I picture him best outdoors hammering or gardening or downstairs working in his cluttered workroom, stuffed with fascinating tools and gadgets. His hands were always busy at a task or project—sometimes building (a garage or a deck or a birdhouse), sometimes locksmithing, and sometimes designing jewelry and stained-glass art.

Remembering my dad prompts me to think of my heavenly Father and Creator, who has always been busy at work. In the beginning, “[God] laid the earth’s foundations . . . [and] marked off its dimensions . . . while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy” (JOB 38:4–7). Everything He created was a work of art, a masterpiece. He designed a breathtakingly beautiful world and pronounced it “very good” (GENESIS 1:31).

That includes you and me. God designed us in intimate and intricate detail (PSALM 139:13–16); and He entrusted us with and instilled in us (His image bearers) the goal and desire to work, which includes ruling and caring for the Earth and its creatures (GENESIS 1:26–28; 2:15). No matter the work we do—in our job or in our leisure—God empowers and gives us what we need to work wholeheartedly for Him.

귀마개 솜털과 그런 것들

곰돌이 푸가 한 유명한 말이 있습니다. “대화하는 상대가 네 말을 듣고 있지 않은 것처럼 보인다면 참아야 해. 아마도 그 사람의 귓속엔 귀마개 솜털이 있어서 그럴 거야.”

나는 곰돌이 푸가 무언가 알고 있었다는 것을 세월이 지난 후에야 깨달았습니다. 누군가 당신의 조언을 따르는 것이 이로운 데도 듣지 않는다면, 아마도 그들의 무반응은 귓속에 있는 귀마개 솜털 때문일지도 모릅니다. 아니면 다른 방해물 때문인지도 모르겠습니다. 자신의 상처와 낙심 때문에 다른 사람들의 말을 쉽게 듣지 못하는 사람들 처럼 말입니다.

모세는 이스라엘 사람들이 마음의 상처와 가혹한 노역으로 인해 그가 하는 말에 귀 기울이지 않았다고 말합니다(출애굽기 6:9). 히브리어로 ‘낙심’은 직역하면 “숨이 차다” 는 뜻인데, 애굽에서의 고된 노예 생활의 결과를 의미합니다. 그런 이유에서라면 모세의 가르침을 들으려 하지 않았던 이스라엘 백성들의 거부반응은 책망보다는 이해와 연민을 불러일으키기도 합니다.

다른 사람이 내 말을 듣지 않으려 할 때 우리는 어떻게 해야 합니까? 곰돌이 푸의 말에는 “참아야 한다”는 지혜가 숨어 있습니다. 하나님은 “사랑은 오래 참고 사랑은 온유하다”(고린도전서 13:4)고 말씀하십니다. 사랑은 기꺼이 기다려주는 것입니다. 하나님은 아직 그 사람과의 일을 끝내지 않으셨습니다. 하나님은 그들의 슬픔, 우리의 사랑, 그리고 우리의 기도를 통해 역사하십니다. 아마도 하나님의 때가 이르면 그들의 귀를 열어 듣게 하실 지도 모릅니다. 그러니 참고 기다리십시오.

Fluff and Other Stuff

Winnie the Pooh famously said, “If the person you are talking to doesn’t appear to be listening, be patient. It may simply be that he has a small piece of fluff in his ear.”

I’ve learned over the years that Winnie might be on to something. When someone won’t listen to you even though following your counsel would be to their advantage, it may be that their reticence is nothing more than a small piece of fluff in their ear. Or there may be another hindrance: Some folks find it hard to listen well because they’re broken and discouraged.

Moses said he spoke to the people of Israel but they didn’t listen because their spirits were broken and their lives were hard (EXODUS 6:9). The word discouragement in the Hebrew text is literally “short of breath,” the result of their bitter enslavement in Egypt. That being the case, Israel’s reluctance to listen to Moses’s instruction called for understanding and compassion, not censure.

What should we do when others won’t listen? Winnie the Pooh’s words enshrine wisdom: “Be patient.” God says, “Love is patient, love is kind” (1 CORINTHIANS 13:4); it’s willing to wait. He’s not finished with that individual. He’s working through their sorrow, our love, and our prayers. Perhaps, in His time, He’ll open their ears to hear. Just be patient. - DAVID H. ROPER
