대청소

11월의 추운 어느 날, 우리 교회에서는 노숙자들에게 나눠줄 배낭 200개를 준비하고 있었습니다. 나는 배낭을 채우기 위해 기증받은 물품들을 분류하며 새 장갑이나 모자, 양말, 담요를 찾기를 기도 했습니다. 칠리 소스와 샌드위치도 있으면 선물로 나눌 예정이었습니다. 그러다 나를 놀라게 한 물건이 나왔는데 바로 세수수건이었습니다. 나는 그동안 사람들이 따뜻하고 배고프지 않게 지내는 것만 생각했는데, 누군가가 선물을 받을 사람들에게 필요한 청결한 느낌을 생각했던 것입니다.

성경은 또 다른 “깨끗함”, 곧 마음과 영의 깨끗함에 대해 말합니다. 예수님은 율법학자들과 바리새인들의 위선을 질책하시며 이 점을 지적 하셨습니다. 그들은 율법의 가장 작은 규칙은 지키면서 “율법의 더 중한 바 정의와 긍휼과 믿음은 버렸도다”(마태복음 23:23)라는 말씀을 들었습니다. 그리스도께서는 그들에게 “잔과 대접의 겉은 깨끗이 하되 그 안에는 탐욕과 방탕으로 가득하게 하는도다 눈 먼 바리새인이여 너는 먼저 안을 깨끗이 하라 그리하면 겉도 깨끗하리라”(25-26절)고 말씀하셨습니다.

그리스도 안에서 깨끗해지는 것을 구하지 않고 영적으로 흠이 없는 것처럼 행동하는 것은 단지 보여주기 위한 쇼일 뿐입니다. 옛 찬송가는 묻습니다. “무엇이 내 죄를 씻어 줄 수 있을까? 예수의 피 밖에 없네.” 세수수건은 우리의 겉을 씻어주는 선물이 될 수 있습니다. 예수님은 우리의 내면을 깨끗게 하시고, 우리의 가장 큰 죄까지도 씻어 주십니다.

DEEP CLEAN

On a frigid November day, our church hoped to fill two hundred backpacks for the homeless. Preparing to help fill them, I sorted through the items donated, praying to find new gloves, hats, socks, blankets. Bowls of chili and sandwiches would also be shared with those who were to receive the gifts. Then I noticed an item that surprised me: washcloths. I’d been focusing on helping people stay warm and fed. Someone had remembered to help our recipients feel clean.

The Bible speaks about another kind of “clean”—cleanliness of heart and spirit. Jesus pointed this out as He decried the hypocrisy of the teachers of the law and the Pharisees. They kept the smallest requirements of the law, but “neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness” (MATTHEW 23:23). Christ told them, “You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and selfindulgence. First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean” (VV. 25-26).

Acting as if we are spiritually spotless is just a show if we don’t seek the cleansing found in Christ. “What can wash away my sin?” asks an old gospel song. “Nothing but the blood of Jesus.” A new washcloth can be a gift to wash us on the outside. Jesus cleans us on the inside, washing away even the worst of our sins. PATRICIA RAYBON

THE BEST EVIDENCE

Lee didn’t believe in God, and he didn’t believe in the resurrection of Jesus. But Lee was a journalist with an analytical mind. When his wife believed in Jesus, he decided to study her new faith for himself. After two years of research, he gave in—to God, to the resurrection, to faith in Christ.

The change in him was noticeable. After a few months, his five-year-old daughter said to his wife, “Mommy, I want God to do for me what he’s done for Daddy.” And the daughter of Lee Strobel put her faith in Jesus too.

Many people refuse to believe in the resurrection. But reputable eyewitnesses saw the risen Jesus. One of those eyewitnesses, the disciple Peter, told a large crowd that King David was certainly dead and buried (ACTS 2:29). Then Peter pointed to a prophecy David had made. “[David] spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah,” he said (V. 31). Peter concluded, “God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it” (V. 32).

The best evidence for the resurrection is the changed lives of the eyewitnesses, including Peter. At the crucifixion, the disciples had gone into hiding. Peter actually denied Christ (JOHN 18:15-17, 25-27). Once they saw Jesus alive, everything changed. Filled with courage, they began to share the truth of the one great hope of the world—the risen Christ.

CLOTHED IN CHRIST

Rose Turner, a fashion psychologist at the London College of Fashion, studies the impact clothing has on how people think, how they behave, and even how clothes affect their mood. As the closest thing to our bodies, clothing forms a type of “second skin” and girds us for whatever the day might hold. For example, donning professional attire can “help with motivation and concentration” at work, and wearing vintage pieces with sentimental value can bring comfort during stressful situations.

This psychological phenomenon offers an insight into Isaiah’s prophetic words about Jesus’ sacrificial act. He records the future deliverance of the Jews from their captivity in Babylon, assuring them they would one day “rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated” in their absence (ISAIAH 61:4). In that day, they would wear “a robe of his righteousness” (V. 10).

Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled first in the nation’s return to Jerusalem and then fully when “God made [Jesus] . . . sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 CORINTHIANS 5:21). Righteousness describes our right relationship with God when we trust in Christ’s sacrifice. God doesn’t see us outfitted in shame or disgrace because of our sin; instead, He sees us clothed in Jesus’ enduring righteousness—a “second skin” that girds us with joy today and for eternity.

애도에서 찬양으로

다섯 개의 예쁜 꽃잎을 가진 물망초의 이름에는 몇 가지 전설이 있습니다. 그 중 독일의 전설이 있는데, 이야기에 따르면 하나님이 모든 피조물의 이름을 지으실 때 어느 작은 꽃 하나가 자신을 못 볼까 봐 걱정을 했다고 합니다. 그래서 그 꽃이 “주님, 저를 잊지 말아 주세요.”라고 외쳤다고 합니다. 그래서 하나님이 그 꽃의 이름을 그렇게 지어 주셨다는 것입니다.

이것은 하나의 이야기일 뿐이지만 물망초는 사랑과 기억의 상징이 되었습니다. 우리는 누구나 잊혀진다는 것이 어떤 느낌인지 경험으로 알고 있습니다. ‘기억된다는 것’, 특히 하나님께 기억되는 것은 우리 마음 속의 진정한 소망입니다. 우리는 그 이야기를 예수님의 십자가 사건 속에서 발견합니다. 누가는 “또 다른 두 행악자도 사형을 받게 되어 예수와 함께 끌려 가니라”(23:32) 고 기록합니다. 그들이 십자가에서 못박힐 때 예수의 곁에 있던 한 죄수가 갑자기 깨달은 것이 있어 이렇게 말했습니다. “예수여 당신의 나라에 임하실 때에 나를 기억하소서”(42절). 이에 대해 예수님은 우리가 늘 기억하는 이 대답을 하셨습니다. “내가 진실로 네게 이르노니 오늘 네가 나와 함께 낙원에 있으리라”(43절).

우리도 도움이 필요한 그 순간에 주님이 기억하실 것입니다. 우리를 사랑하사 우리를 위해 죽기까지 하신 하나님은 우리를 결코 잊지 않으실 것입니다.

LAMENT TO PRAISE

Several legends surround the naming of the beautiful fivepetaled flower the forget-me-not. Among those stories is one from a German legend. According to the story, as God named all the plants He’d created, one little flower worried that it would be overlooked. So the flower called out “Forget-me-not, O Lord.” And that’s the name God gave to it.

Though this is only a story, the forget-me-not has become a symbol of love and remembrance. Yet all of us have experienced what it feels like to be forgotten. To be remembered—especially to be remembered by our God—is our heart’s true desire. We find just such a story in the account of the crucifixion of Jesus. Luke tells us, “Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with [Jesus] to be executed” (23:32). As they were being crucified, one criminal next to Christ suddenly understood. He said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (V. 42). Christ’s response was unforgettable: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise” (V. 43).

What an amazing moment! In his darkest hour, that criminal learned what it meant to be remembered by the Son of God.

We too are remembered in our hour of need. The God who loved us enough to die for us will never forget us.

총살형을 집행하는 병사들 앞에서 표도르 도스토예프스키는 생의 마지막 순간을 조용히 기다리고 있었습니다. 예수를 믿은 도스토예프스키는 모든 문학에서 가장 위대한 작가의 한 사람으로 평가받습니다. 그의 기념비적 소설 ‘카라마조프가의 형제들’은 하나님과 삶과 죽음의 주제를 깊이 다루었습니다. “그가 예수님에 대해 말할 때에는 황홀해 했다”고 전해지는 도스토예프스키였습니다. 이제 병사들이 총을 들었습니다. “준비!...조준...”

예수님은 자신의 죽음을 가리켜 “때가 왔도다”(요한복음 12:23)라고 말씀하시며, 제자들과 그리고 우리에게 삶과 죽음의 영원한 가치에 대해 말씀하십니다. 예수님은 비유로 한 알의 씨앗(우리 생명)이 떨어져 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺는다고 하셨습니다(24절). 예수님은 우리에게 지금의 삶을 너무 사랑하지 말라 하시며, 현세의 삶을 기꺼이 희생하는 사람이 “영생”(25절)을 얻을 것이라 하셨습니다.

도스토예프스키는 죽음 앞에 섰습니다. 그러나 그 마지막 순간에 러시아 황제의 편지가 도착했습니다. 집행유예였습니다. 도스토예프스키는 이렇게 해서 자신의 목숨을 건졌고, 이 경험은 이후 그의 작품들에 깊은 영향을 주게 되었습니다. 실제로 ‘카라마조프가의 형제들’ 책의 후기는 바로 요한복음 12 장 24절 입니다: “한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 아니하면 한 알 그대로 있고 죽으면 많는 열매를 맺느니라.”

LIFE AND DEATH IN CHRIST

Facing a firing squad, Fyodor Dostoevsky quietly counted the last moments of his life. Dostoevsky, a believer in Jesus, is considered one of the greatest writers in all of literature. His monumental novel The Brothers Karamazov explored themes about God, life, and death. It was said of Dostoevsky, “He spoke about Christ ecstatically.” The rifles raised. “Ready! . . . Aim . . . .”

Jesus, alluding to His own execution, speaks to His disciples and to us of the eternal value of life and death when He said, “The hour has come” (JOHN 12:23). The image is a seed (our life), which produces a great harvest through its own sacrifice (V. 24). Jesus tells us not to love this life too much, for it is those who are willing to sacrifice this present life who will find “eternal life” (V. 25).

Being His disciple requires sacrifice. But we find our hope in His words, “My Father will honor the one who serves me” (V. 26).

Fyodor looked death in the face. But a letter from the Czar was delivered at the last second. A reprieve. Dostoevsky’s life was spared, yet this experience would infuse all his later works. Indeed, the epigraph of The Brothers Karamazov is this verse, John 12:24: “Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”

빵 전쟁

말도 안되는 이유로 나라들 사이에 전쟁이 터진 예로는 아마도 빵집 사건이 가장 심할 것 같습니다. 1832년 프랑스와 멕시코가 긴장 관계에 있을 때 멕시코의 군 장교들이 멕시코 시티에 있는 프랑스 빵집에 들어가 돈을 내지 않고 빵들을 모두 시식했습니다. 자세한 사항은 더 복잡하고 (다른 문제들로 일이 더 커졌지만) 이것이 결국 빵 전쟁이라고 불리는 프랑스-멕시코 1차 전쟁(1838-39)으로 번져 3백명이 넘는 병사들이 죽었습니다. 한 순간의 분노가 이렇게까지 커지는 것은 안타까운 일입니다.

결혼 생활이 깨지고 친구 사이가 벌어지는 등 대부분 인간의 갈등도 화를 참지 못하는 데서 비롯됩니다. 이기심과 힘 겨루기, 풀리지 않은 오해, 무시와 반격, 이런 것들은 모두 미련한 것입니다. 우리는 잘못된 인식이나 반응 때문에 화를 내서 일을 그르칠 때가 많습니다. 그러나 전도서는 “급한 마음으로 노를 발하지 말라 노는 우매한 자들의 품에 머무름이니라”(7:9)고 지혜의 말씀을 들려줍니다.

하나님께서 “지혜로운 사람의 책망을 듣는 것”(5절)을 통해 더 좋은 길을 보여주심에도 우리가 참지 못하고 쉽게 성내는 것은 어리석은 일입니다. 우리가 지혜를 따라 살 때 “그리스도의 평강이 [우리의] 마음을 주장하게” (골로새서 3:15) 할 수 있습니다. 하나님의 도우심으로 우리는 지혜롭게 용서하며 살아갈 수 있습니다.

A PASTRY WAR

Of all the foolish things that have led to nations going to war, could a pastry be the worst of all? In 1832, amid tensions between France and Mexico, a group of Mexican army officers visited a French pastry shop in Mexico City and sampled all the baker’s goods without paying. Though the details get complicated (and other provocations compounded the troubles), the result was the first Franco-Mexican War (1838-39)—known as the Pastry War—in which more than three hundred soldiers died. It’s sad what a moment of anger can incite.

Most human conflicts—shattered marriages and ruined friendships— are likely rooted in some form of unmanaged anger. Selfishness and power plays, unresolved misunderstandings, slights and counter-aggression—it’s all foolishness. So often, our ill-advised perceptions or reactions lead to destructive anger. Yet Ecclesiastes offers wisdom: “Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger resides in the lap of fools” (7:9).

It’s foolish to have a short fuse and be easily provoked to anger, especially when God offers a better way—perhaps through “the rebuke of a wise person” (V. 5). Pursuing wisdom, we can “let the peace of Christ rule in [our] hearts” (COLOSSIANS 3:15). We can live in wisdom and forgiveness as He helps us. WINN COLLIER

하나님과의 동행

실화를 바탕으로 한 영화 “정보원”에서 주인공 그레빌은 어려운 결정을 내려야 하는 상황에 처합니다. 그는 가까운 친구가 곧 체포되어 혹독한 감옥 생활을 겪게 될 것을 알게 됩니다. 그레빌이 지금 당장 그 나라에서 빠져나와 친구와의 관계를 부인하면 친구와 같은 처지가 될 상황을 면할 수 있습니다. 그러나 연민의 마음에 그레빌은 의리를 지키며 떠나지 않고 옥에 갇혀 친구와 똑같은 고충을 겪습니다. 두 사람 어느 누구도 서로를 배반하지 않은 것입니다. 마침내 그레빌은 석방이 됩니다. 많이 망가졌지만, 그는 여전히 진실되고 신실한 친구로 남습니다.

나오미에게도 그런 친구가 필요했습니다. 남편과 아들들이 모두 죽자 나오미는 궁핍하게 되어 고향으로 가는 긴 여정을 앞두고 있었습니다. 나오미는 과부가 된 며느리 룻에게 모압에 남아 새 삶을 찾으라고 말합니다(룻기 1:8-9). 이에 룻은 대답하기를 “내게 어머니를 떠나며 어머니를 따르지 말고 돌아가라 강권하지 마옵소서 어머니께서 가시는 곳에 나도 가고 어머니께서 머무시는 곳에서 나도 머물겠나이다”(16절)라고 말했습니다. 룻은 충성되게 나오미를 따라 외국 땅에서 어머니를 봉양했습니다. 룻의 이런 믿음이 무너졌던 가정을 놀라운 유업으로 바꾸어 놓았습니다. 훗날 나오미의 증손자 다윗은 이스라엘의 왕이 되었고 하나님의 마음에 합한 사람이라 불리게 되었습니다.

누군가와 고통을 함께 겪는다는 것은 힘든 일입니다. 그러나 우리가 자신의 뜻을 접고 하나님의 능력을 구한다면 하나님께서는 놀라운 방법으로 우리로 다른 사람을 사랑할 수 있게 하십니다. 하나님의 능력 안에서 우리는 “당신이 가시는 곳에 나도 가겠습니다.”라고 말할 수 있습니다.

GOING WITH GOD

In The Courier, a film inspired by true events, the main character Greville is confronted with a difficult decision. He learns that a close friend is going to be arrested and will likely face a grueling imprisonment. Greville can save himself from the same fate if he flees the country immediately and denies association with his friend. Moved with compassion, Greville loyally refuses to leave and is imprisoned, suffering the same agony as his friend. Neither man betrays the other. In the end, Greville is released a broken, but true and faithful companion.

Naomi needed a friend like that. When her husband and sons died, Naomi faced destitution and a long journey to her homeland. Naomi told her widowed daughter-in-law Ruth to remain in Moab and find a new life for herself (RUTH 1:8-9). Ruth responded, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go” (V. 16). Ruth loyally accompanied Naomi to a foreign land and helped provide for their family. Ruth’s faithfulness transformed their broken family into an incredible legacy. Much later, her greatgrandson David would become king of Israel and was called a man after God’s own heart.

Facing suffering with others is daunting. But if we surrender our own will and seek God’s strength, He enables us to love people in extraordinary ways. In His power, we can choose to say, “Where you go, I will go.” KAREN PIMPO

복음의 자원을 나누기

시카고 도심의 리더십 회의 장소와 숙소는 그 곳으로 가는 길에서 본 열악한 환경과는 너무나 대조적이었습니다. 거기에 사는 사람들에겐 음식이나 쉴 곳 같은 기본적인 것마저 없었습니다. 이런 격차를 목격한 것이 우리가 도시와 다른 여러 곳에서 봉사하려는 비전 계획에 포함시켜야 할 것을 구상하고 구체화하는 데 도움이 되었습니다. 우리의 비전은 복음을 위한 자원들(하나님의 사랑과 구원의 메시지를 전파하는 데 도움이 되는 모든 것) 을 가장 필요로 하는 곳으로 전하는 것입니다.

바울은 예수님을 믿는 로마의 신자들에게 편지를 썼을 때 아직 그곳에 가보지 않았지만 “내가 너희 보기를 간절히 원하는 것은 어떤 신령한 은사를 너희에게 나누어 주어 너희를 견고하게 하려 함이니 이는 곧 내가 너희 가운데서 너희와 나의 믿음으로 말미암아 피차 안위 함을 얻으려 함이라”(로마서 1:11- 12)고 했습니다. 바울 사도는 예수님을 위해 살고 다른 사람들을 섬기려고 노력하는 그 자신과 다른 사람들에게 유익이 될 “선물 교환”을 고대하고 있었습니다.

SHARING GOSPEL RESOURCES

The venue and accommodations for our leadership meeting in downtown Chicago were in stark contrast with the neediness I encountered on my way there—neediness that included individuals who lacked the basics of food and shelter. The differences helped me picture and articulate things we needed to include in our vision planning for serving in the city and elsewhere: to get gospel resources (anything given by God to help spread the message of His love and salvation) to places where they’re needed most.

At the time Paul wrote to the Roman believers in Jesus, he hadn’t visited them yet—but wanted to: “I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong—that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith” (ROMANS 1:11-12). The apostle was looking forward to a “gift exchange” that would benefit him and others as they sought to live for Jesus and serve others.

The resources we possess include the spiritual gifts and material resources given to us by God. May we allow Him to use us to compassionately reach out to people with the gospel message. And, as God empowers us, let’s open our hearts, hands, and lips to serve others. May we do so “[un]ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (V. 16).

돌들의 소리를 들으라

우리 가족이 강변에서 아버지의 추도예배를 드린 후, 각자 아버지를 추억하는데 도움이 될만한 돌을 하나씩 선택했습니다. 아버지의 삶은 늘 승리와 패배가 교차하는 삶이었지만, 언제나 진심으로 우리를 사랑했습니다. 나는 내가 고른 매끄러운 돌멩이를 손가락으로 만져보며 아버지를 마음 속에 더 가깝게 느껴보았습니다.

누가복음 19장에서 예수님이 예루살렘으로 승리의 입성을 하실 때 군중은 종려나무 가지를 흔들며 호산나를 외치며 “찬송하리로다 주의 이름으로 오시는 왕이여”라고 환호했습니다(38절; 요한복음 12:12-13 참조). 그러나 바리새인들은 예수님을 메시아라고 하는 것은 신성모독이라고 여겨 이를 질책하며 예수님께 제자들을 조용히 시키라고 명령했습니다. 이에 예수님은 “만일 잠잠하면 돌들이 소리지르리라”(누가복음 19:40)고 대답하셨습니다.

돌들은 여러가지 방법으로 소리칩니다. 하나님은 우리를 향한 그의 사랑 이야기 곳곳에서 돌을 사용하셨습니다. 하나님은 거칠게 다듬은 두 개의 돌 판에 우리에게 이렇게 살라고 하시며 십계명을 새기셨습니다(출애굽기34:1). 요단 강가와 요단 가운데 쌓은 기념석들은 이스라엘 백성들에게 하나님의 공급하심과 신실하심을 여러 세대에 걸쳐 기념할 수 있게 했습니다(여호수아 4:8-9). 예수님의 시신을 가두기 위해 굴러져 온 돌은 그분의 부활을 보여주기 위해 굴러간 바로 그 돌입니다(마태복음 27:59-66; 누가복음 24:2). 이 돌을 통해 “나는 부활이요 생명이니”(요한복음 11:25)라고 하신 예수님의 말씀을 기억할 때 우리는 이 돌이 말하는 “소리를 듣는 것”과 같습니다.

돌들에 귀를 기울이고 돌과 함께 우리의 목소리를 높여 사랑하는 아버지를 찬양합시다.

LISTEN TO THE STONES

After our family held a riverside memorial service for my father, we each selected a stone to help us remember him. His life had been a checkerboard of wins and losses, but we knew his heart was for us. My fingers traced my stone’s smooth surface and helped me remember to hold him close.

In Luke 19, Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, while the crowds waved palm branches, shouted Hosannas, and cheered, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”(V. 38; SEE JOHN 12:12-13). In the Pharisees’ disdain of what they perceived to be a blasphemous claim of messiahship, they ordered Jesus to tell the disciples to be quiet. Jesus replied, “If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out” (LUKE 19:40).

The stones do cry out, in many ways. God has used stones throughout the story of His love for us. Two rough-hewn stones carried ten chiseled commandments to tell us how to live (EXODUS 34:1). Stones of remembrance piled by the Jordan River and in the middle of the river reminded generations of Israelites of God’s provision and faithfulness (JOSHUA 4:8-9 NLT). The one rolled into place to contain Jesus’ body is the same one rolled away to show He had risen (MATTHEW 27:59-66; LUKE 24:2). We “hear” this stone as it reminds us of Jesus’ words, “I am the resurrection and the life” (JOHN 11:25).

Listen to the stones and lift your own voice along with them in praise to our loving Father.

성령님이 생각나게 하신다

어느 해, 나는 아들의 스포츠 경기에 앞서 노래를 부르게 되었습니다. 이미 그 노래를 다 외우고 있었지만 나는 몇 주 동안 연습했습니다. 두 팀이 내 양쪽에 나란히 선 가운데 나는 필드로 걸어 나가며 눈을 감고 기도했습니다. 그런데 첫 몇 소절을 부르다 갑자기 얼어붙었습니다. 그 순간 다음 가사가 생각나질 않았습니다. 그 때 내 뒤에 있던 한 남자가 잊어버렸던 가사를 작은 소리로 불러주었습니다. 기억을 살려준 그 목소리에 나는 자신감을 얻어 나머지 노래를 부를 수 있었습니다.

우리는 누구나 가끔은 약간의 도움이 필요합니다. 요한복음 14장에서 예수님은 우리가 예수님께 순종을 함으로 그를 사랑할 수 있다고 말씀하셨습니다 (15절). 예수님은 아버지께 보혜사, 곧 “진리의 영”을 우리에게 보내주시길 간구하겠다고 약속하셨습니다(17절). 예수님께서는 “세상은 능히 그를 받지 못하나니 이는 그를 보지도 못하고 알지도 못함이라. 그러나 너희는 그를 아나니 그는 너희와 함께 거하심이요 또 너희 속에 계시겠음이라”고 말씀하셨습니다(17 절). 예수님은 제자들과 함께 계실 때 많은 것을 가르치셨지만(25절), “보혜사, 곧 아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실 성령 그가 너희에게 모든 것을 가르치고 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 생각나게 하리라”고 말씀하셨습니다(26절).

기도하는 마음으로 성경을 읽을 때 성령님은 우리를 도와 하나님의 지혜를 해석하고 이해하고 적용할 수 있게 해주십니다. 그분의 인도는 항상 성경 말씀과 일치합니다. 그래서 우리를 지도하시고, 위로하시고, 사랑으로 변화시켜 주시며, 필요한 때에는 잊은 것도 생각나게 도와주십니다.

THE SPIRIT’S HELPFUL REMINDERS

One year, I agreed to sing a song before one of my son’s sporting events. I practiced for weeks, but I knew the song by heart already. So when I walked onto the field with the teams lined up on both sides of me, I closed my eyes and prayed. I started singing the first few lines. Then, I froze. In that moment I couldn’t remember the next line. A man behind me whispered the words I’d forgotten. As soon as I heard the helpful reminder, I belted out the rest of the lyrics with confidence.

We all need a little help sometimes. In John 14, Jesus explained that we love Him by obeying Him (V. 15), and He promised to ask the Father to give us a Helper—“the Spirit of truth” (V. 17). Jesus said, “The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you” (V. 17). Though Jesus taught the disciples a lot while with them (V. 25), He said “the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (V. 26).

As we prayerfully read the Bible, the Holy Spirit helps us interpret, understand, and apply God’s wisdom. His leading always aligns with Scripture—guiding, comforting, and transforming us in love, one helpful reminder at a time.
